Solve : Vista x64 forgetting everything I do..?

Answer»

This is driving me crazy.  I just installed Vista X64 on here the other day, and ever since then, every time I reboot it seems to forget a lot of the changes I made.. even in other applications.

For example.. if I change the view of folders and tell it to set all other folders the same way.. then reboot, they revert back to default after rebooting.  In ESET Smart Security when I disable "web access protection" (or any other setting) in the options and reboot, it turns itself back on after rebooting (which isn't NORMAL).  If I LOG into a website and tell it to remember me, I can exit Firefox and reopen it and I'll still be logged in.  But if I reboot... it's like I never logged in in the first place.

It's happening to all sorts of stuff, not just ESET and Firefox.  My Vista is fully updated and was installed from a legitimate disc.  Any ideas why this is happening? Is Service Pack 1 installed?  If not, install it...hate to say it but Vista does forget folder settings, it does it with mine too. as for FF, do you get it to clear personal data? i don't know about ESET sorry.

FBOh I know Vista forgets folder settings (XP does, too).

I just figured that having SP1 would be a good place to start...

Next step would be this:

Solve : Control Panel not opening in Vista?

Answer»

Have just done  a fresh install of Vista Home Premuim and EVERYTHING is fine, but the control panel will not open when clicked is FLICKS open and closes straight away. Any one with ideas how to overcome this bu the way It's vista  32 bit. With a 1GB of ram. Everything else is working fine. OjasHi , what you have to do is use vista repair disk to fix that problem , it seems that when you installed vista premium some of the files did not install CORRECTLY, you need to use the vista disk to fix this error ,plus go to microsoft web site for the hot fix for this they have it there.Where was this Vista DVD from ? ?Do you have Service Pack 1 installed?  If not, I would try that next, as it makes the difference between a crap OS and a GOOD one.

Solve : tutorials?

Answer»

I am a baby boomer (60), am COMPUTER illiterate, w/ a new Dell vostros computer. Is there a tutorial on the internet any where that I can download
that is comprehensive......from beginner to advanced?? I don't know whether you'll find any downloadable "comprehensive" tutorial. I think you're expecting too much there.  I can't name a specific online tutorial but you may want to peruse some of the ones here:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=windows+tutorials+for+beginners&aq=2&oq=Windows+tutor

Also, I suggest books or videos from a library or purchase of a book, perhaps one of the Dummies series, such as: http://books.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.aspx?WRD=Windows+vista+for+dummies

And, see whether a computer user's group exists in your area.  They can be good source for novice users to LEARN how to use a computer.for Soybean: Thank-you for the info. From the link you gave me I found another one that is totally comprehensive. It is (for ANYONE interested) www.homeandlearn.co.uk. C.H.F. is a really COOL PLACE

Solve : after coming up desktop icon screen and taskbar disappear?

Answer»

Actually that was a non-issue which resolved itself.  Had to do with my modem connection at that moment.

It only had to do with my being able to get to HJT download online, to get you a log, which I have done and already posted .  Which was looked at and considered clean.

Thanks for the post though.

My problem is simply that my Desktop and Taskbar come up momentarily then both dissapear leaving the
HP Fractal Blue background screen.  This occurs in my main Administrator User option.

My computer is also very slow with whatever this problem is.

Question please:  Does this sound like a virus problem (apparently not from your replys), so what then do you think it is?  And what are your suggestions?  Are there other logs I can run for you?

I'm sorta at a loss here since no one is coming up with any questions or suggestions for me.
I will gladly provide you with whatever you ask for, to help figure this out.

I am posting from another computer, my problem computer is pretty useless and needs your help. please.

Thanks.Did you actually remove Norton?I posted a reply to your post, but guess it timed out and disappeared, so I'll try this again.

No have not uninstalled Norton yet, as I am not at the shop where problem computer is located.  I will be there MONDAY. At that time I'll select one of the options for Free AV you guys gave me and install it.

I am a sponge for this computer knowledge you folks have. I will LISTEN and learn as much as I can, and I am willing to take the cover off and do whatever you guys tell met to do.

It's PERPLEXING because its been going on for 2 months, and I have gotten nowhere.
It apparently is not viral, so what the heck can it be?  Any ideas?

If, after uninstalling Norton, the issue is still there...

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If SYSTEM File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it'll ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

If the above doesn't help, run Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThanks Broni, I'll do that on Monday and LET you know what happens.

While I was away from you just now, I posted a little story about trojan horses under the post :
"What the H**l is a Trojan" (new post from guy in Denmark) .  You might enjoy checking it out. Keep us posted.

Solve : Vista and Vmware?

Answer»

Hello,I have vista 32 bit on my inspiron 1521 2g ram & 64 bit processor.I want to know if its possible to put vmware inside of vista?? When I google vista and vmware all that i find is vista inside of another os but i want to run linux inside of vista.I want this to be free also so isnt vmware platyer free?VMware Player runs on a number of "host" operating systems Windows, Linux, etc, and you can run a number of "guest" operating systems including Windows, Linux, etc. So yes you can do what you want. You can run Windows in Windows, Windows in Linux, Linux in Windows, Linux in Linux. And yes VMWare Player is free.

You can even run Mac OS, through VMware. QUOTE from: Broni on December 04, 2008, 08:28:56 PM

You can even run Mac OS, through VMware.

Woah, woah... slow down there!

OS X though, right?Anything, DOS, too. It simply creates new VIRTUAL partition, so it's like separate, brand new HD, straight from the store. You can use it any way, you want.

I have already XP, 2000, and 98 there, and Mac's Leopard, and Windows 7 are coming.how do I get a MAC os running with VMware? there doesn't appear to be an option when adding a VM. Or, must I have an old version? While at selecting OS, choose Other, then pick FreeBSD.

Ahh, OK, thank you! Now I have a use for my Mac OS CD that I got with a bunch of books and stuff.

Which flavor ? ?darn, It's not the UNIX BASED OS X, but rather a 8.6 system software disc; I'm sure there are emulation solutions for them as well, but they ran on small endian motorola processors, which is a bit different from what VMware emulates.

if I ever. *ahem* acquire OS X, at least I have a way to give it a whirl.I just installed Windows 7.
Take a look...

Solve : accsesing e-mail using a batch file?

Answer»

hi this is my first post and im wondewring if you can write a batch file to accsess outlook 2007 then check for any new messages then to see whats in them then if it has a sertain work in it it will run another comand so im wondering that is posible if it is can you send me a code for it please  i think i posted this in the wrong SECTION I think  Microsoft Windows is close enough, the only other place WOULD be Software. I think we can leave it here for now, unless another moderator thinks it belongs elsewhere.

I dont think a script as you are requesting EXISTS, since there isnt anything that could be interacted with in Command Prompt that would actually change that would show that there is a new email.
Thats the problem with all these graphical user INTERFACE programs these days...

I think something like that could too easily be used for nefarious reasons also. I wouldn't trust an email program that could be COMPROMISED that easily...im using outlook 2007 and you can make it cheack for emails every minute and then it can cheack whats in the e-mail and run a program but i cant do cirtain things because im using a trial version

and also the last post in the section that im suposed to post in wal in novemberWhy not just use Outlook Express? Or Windows Mail if you have Vista?
Its faster than Outlook, and you dont have to pay for it. Though, it doesnt have the same contacts, tasks, or Calendar. see i started using it so i can turn of my computer with my mobile and so i can cheack on my external e-mails from my desktop and also i dont like the windows messenger and msn

Solve : Saerch Button Missing.?

Hope I have this in the correct section.
Vista Home Premium. SP1 – 2.8Ghz Processor.
In bother again! On clicking on the START button brings up the start programs, left and right panes.
Until recently I had a SEARCH function button in the right pane of the menu.
Now disappeared.
From the top, buttons now read (after the personal button) Documents, Pictures, Music, Games, then Blank Space where SEARCH used to live, then Recent Items etc.
I have had a FIDDLE around in the Start Menu dialogue box but can’t RETRIEVE it. Not CRUCIAL that I have it but annoying that I don’t.
If help is possible, could it be in novice terms as I am just that. Possibly in a 1-2-3 SEQUENCE?
Thanks for your previous help

Solve : Keyboard repeat rate keeps getting lowered?

Answer»

I'm having this strange problem.. The repeat rate on my KEYBOARD keeps getting lowered randomly. When I go to the control panel and look at the slider, it's still at the highest possible setting, but the repeat rate is really slow. To fix it, I put the slider on minimum, click apply, and put it back to max and click apply. That fixes it for a while, but it becomes slow again within an hour. It's really annoying having to hold backspace down for ages to delete a bit of text...Wired, or wireless keyboard? USB, or PS/2?
Did you try another keyboard?PS/2, wired. Tried another one, same thing.
Flavor of Windows ? ?
pardon me i just noticed Vista in your specs...
Do you have AERO enabled ? ?Aero's enabled...Try disabling it and re-boot a few TIMES...this just happened to me this weekend        but i haven't tracked down a reason.I figured out what was causing it. It was the MSN+ ADDON. It was causing other little annoyances and SINCE I've deleted it the repeat rate is fine.Ahhhh....add-ons...

Solve : windows 2000 pro sp3 install hangs up during laptop installation?

Answer»

i am trying to install windows 2000 pro sp 3 (original disk) on a new laptop (compaq c700, 1.86g dual core, 2g ram, standard bells and whistles) .

i bought a new computer with windows VISTA only to find that vista doesn't like a lot of my older software.  so i bought a harddrive (new) and tried installing Win 2k pro.

problem is that the install hangs up on the blue screen saying 'windows 2000 will now install' (paraphrased) immediately following installing drivers and such necessary for setup just before moving on to the agreement and drive formatting STEPS and the actual install.  i have the cd rom set as the FIRST boot device (no problems) followed by the hard drive (still unformatted) in the bios.

i've done this install before on a desktop pc and had no trouble.  so i'm stumped.  could there be a hardware conflict (hope not) or does vista have it's fingers in other places (bios? ram cache?) that is preventing the install?  ultimately i need to finish the install.  please helpYour HDD might not be recognized by Windows 200, as it is SATA.  The only way I can think of to get past that is to slipstream the drivers using Nlite or similar tools.
I WOULD take a bet that most of the hardware in that laptop would not be supported by that OS anyway.excellent:(

well, at at least i know now.  thanks for the reply Calum and that makes sense about the sata non-support.  do you think i may be better off using xp?Sorry hagarty, I edited my post when I discovered some new information.  If you were a bit slower you wouldn't have noticed, heh.
XP might be better for that laptop, if your software works on it.no problem Calum.  i have the drivers for all the hardware so it win 2k support 'shouldn't' be a problem but what do i know....

i'll go get a copy of xp now and try that even though it's a downgrade from 2000:)

thanks again for the replyIf you have the drivers then I agree, Windows 2000 should be fine.  I must admit I haven't checked it out specifically, just that in my experience Windows 2000 hasn't LIKED any of the laptops I've tried.
You could try slipstreaming the drivers if you like, it's not too difficult if you already have them, and a blank CD.
I get where you're coming from about XP and 2K, although I do prefer XP - seems faster to me on newer hardware than 2K, but I can't fault either of them.i know nothing about slipstreaming.  how's that work?  what is it?  and where can i learn more?

also, if win2k won't recognize a sata drive will it even matter?  or will slistreaming the drivers handle that?Sorry, I should've explained better.
http://www.nliteos.com/ for the software.
http://www.nliteos.com/guide/ for a rough guide to doing it.
Basically, this program can, amongst other things, integrate your SATA drivers into a new Windows 2000 CD, allowing Windows 2000 to recognize the drive, assuming it's compatible.i don't know if it matters for slipstreaming but the hdd is still unformatted.cool!  thanks Calum.  i'll check out those sites and give it a whirl.

i'll keep you posted.... Quote from: hagarty on December 03, 2008, 12:10:46 PM

i don't know if it matters for slipstreaming but the hdd is still unformatted.
No, it doesn't matter.
Create the CD on another machine, then boot the laptop from it.  Basically it will allow Win2K to access the HDD, so you can format the drive and install Windows, etc.
Good luck.

Solve : Is there a way to disable the windows button??

You know, the button with the windows logo on it, I'm not sure if that's what its called but it's really messing up my computer because I use a full window game and I use that alt button a lot and sometimes I accidentally hit the windows button and then I have to wait a good 5 minutes for my computer to situate itself so I can get BACK into the game.
KeyTweak
I have used this free program on a number of systems and I like it. It WORKS for both XP and Vista but Vista requires it to be run as an administrator. It can be downloaded here. There are screen shots at the download site but the figure below shows the main screen. It shows a configuration where I have mapped the Caps Lock key to a Shift and the Right Alt key to a Windows key.

Yo do NOT need a program.
A small screw driver will do the job. That's true...well, it really depends on what kind of keyboard it is. Some keyboards employ strange mechanics underneath each key, with all sorts of funky gizmos- essentially making placing the key back on impossible. Mostly, though, they easily pop off.

In fact, if the keyboard keycaps come off easy- that would be a workable solution too.

My Acer Notebook Aspire 5100-3949 wireless internet is so slow.  A member here told me about ccleaner and I tried it.  It is not done by what I see I cleaned and analyzed and it still doesn't say it's done.  As I type it hesitates and it's hard to get my message out without waiting and alot of frustration.  I live right off I-95 on the east coast so I should get a better signal.  It says five bars and I have AT&T wireless internet.  Someone said to get more RAM.  How MUCH is it to get more RAM?  I don't have a toolbar on the top, and I have Yahoo not Google, could that be it?  I get on the internet through my Yahoo Messenger and sometimes the IE Shortcut.  Vista must have alot of issues I see it on the commercials and I've had some issues I thought I had fixed but I guess not because I am asking for some insight now.  Thanks. Are you saying CCleaner did not complete it's scan?

Per http://www.bizrate.com/laptopcomputers/acer-aspire-5100-3949-2.0-ghz-amd-turion-64-laptop--pid653137864/, you have 1GB of RAM.  Yes, experienced Vista USERS usually recommend 2GB for Vista.  I've been using my Compaq Presario notebook PC with Vista Home Premium since July 2007, with 1GB of memory and find it RUNS OK for web surfing, email, and MS Office applications open simultaneously.

But, one thing you can do to improve performance with your current amount of memory is to review what software Acer installed that may be running in the background and consuming system resources.  All the manufacturers install a lot of extra software on new systems that most users don't need and that can degrade performance.

But, again, no doubt about it, adding RAM would make a difference.  2GB of Kingston would cost $44.  See KAC-MEME/1G

In addition to CCleaner, you might use PC Decrapifier to help get rid of some UNNECESSARY Acer stuff.

What protection programs (virus, spyware, firewall) are you using?Yes the scan didn't say it was finished, and also I have Norton Internet Security and Spy Sweeper and Scotty the Watchdog, and Windows Defender.  Where can I get the RAM at again, you didn't say. Thanks. So with the decrapifier I have to do it manually.  I don't know half of what Acer has in there that is important.  I don't want to risk taking something important out.

Solve : QWERTY Dvorak Switch ???

Answer»

:(Every once in a while I must lean on some key combination that switches my keyboard to the Dvorak configuration.   I don't really know Dvorak.  How can I make it switch back to QWERTY?What makes you think its going to the Dovrak configuration?

What operating system are you using?

In Windows:
Click the Start Menu, go to Control Panel. In the left hand side of the control panel, make sure "Classic View" is CLICKED.
Find Keyboard.
Open it. Click the Language tab, in the dropdown LIST, select US - Dvorak
Click OK.
It might ask you to insert your CD, as its an extended language option.

If your using Vista, click Start, and type:
Regional and Language
Open that.
Click the Keyboards and Languages tab
Then "Add"
And under English, find Dvorak.

Once again, there shouldent be a button... you would have to change it yourself.

I once had a big argument with a computer science tutor about how to pronounce Dvorak (the keyboard guy, not the composer). I had to show him the article in "Byte" magazine where he told the interviewer to say "Divorak". He also told me that Windows 95 "didn't have any DOS code".

There are a number of Windows hotkey applications that allow a key press to switch layouts Mac-style. Maybe one of these is running?

We don't know the OS or anything about the OP's computer. Information please!

Hi Klystra, thanks for constructive (albeit didn't work) suggestions.

It is Dvorak.  The first time it happened I thought it was some virus caused hoax, and I noted a few of the keys.  The second time it happened I noted what came up for each key -  a translation:
Keys qwertyuiop  produced ',.pyfgcrl/=\  etc.
Checking Dell's INFO pages I discovered that these were the assignments for the Dvorak keyboard.
The next time it happened it was again the Dvorak.

I work on a Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop that came bundled with
Windows  XP Media Center Edition
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.079714-1236: Service Pack 3)
I am up-to-date with updates - possibly a Dvorak option was added in an update; I understand Vista supports it.

I have added German and Spanish keyboards  as alternatives to use for ease with their special characters, but I never addded Dvorak.

My Control Panel has no indication or selection for "Classic View", or any other view.  It's pretty basic.  "Keyboard" support provides tabs only for repeat Speed and for Hardware description, no control for key interpretation.

I'll keep exploring and post the solution for this system when I find it.  Thanks again,
EvOn XP, can you look under languages and search around for XP Keyboard input settings in there somewhere? (I DONT have XP, its a bit hard to look and see what its like)Hi Klystra,  problem solved !!
Apparently, as I guessed, a Windows XP update must have included the Dvorak keyboard layout as an option even though not specifically shown in the Keyboard list of US languages.  The accidental, unintentional switching (a toggle, actually) between QWERTY and Dvorak keyboard layouts occurs when one presses Ctrl and Shift simultaneously, an easy slip-up.

The process to set up keyboard layouts (in my Windows XP Media Center Edition with latest updates) is detailed in the attachment to this post.  Thanks for mentioning Vista's Regional and Language Options, it was the clue.

Solve : I don't have permission??

Answer»

Sometimes when I try to perform certain ACTIONS like replace files or delete them. It comes up with a box saying that I need Administrator permission to do so. I am the only person who uses this computer and my account type is set to administrator. It's the only account on the computer. How do I fix this? At the moment I'm trying to replace a .dll file in System32. Because I believe the other one is corrupt. This is only one instance.Sometimes, you need to take the ownership of the file. SEE here: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13157That ownership tool seems like a virus or TROJAN.
I don't think I trust putting it in my registry. How long do you think we would be here if we gave advice like that ? ?

You should apologise to Broni.I give up....LOLit's CALLED UAC and new in vista...you can read about it here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc709691.aspx

best not to turn it off, just accept the permissions...IMO

you should be able to use SFC (system file checker) to check that file
and the others...SFC(google it)Using, or not using UAC, and getting file/folder ownership are two different things. Quote from: Broni on December 01, 2008, 09:29:43 AM

dangerous replacing system dll files by using this but if it works...!!!??? Hope no issues down the road...SFC would have been safer...IMOThe above is normal, and safe procedure to obtain permission under Vista.

There's another text file under that one that's 55mb. woah?
What can I do to fix these .dll files? because I know the dsound.dll hasn't been fixed seeing as the problem persists.
In command prompt it said it can't open the log.
I imagine it might possibly indicate the unrepairable files but not help fix them.

Solve : New WD HD trying to load MS Vista?

Answer»

My HD crashed in my HP Pavilion. I bought a replacement HD and need to try to get an operating system on it. I started loading Vista and was excited that it was actually working. After loading a bunch of files it stopped and gave me some error saying that some files weren't available to complete the installation.

Now I'm trying to RELOAD Vista and I get this in the DOS SCREEN and nothing else:

BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

After doing that it restarts and GOES back to the same screen.

Any thoughts? So I got Vista to START, after COPYING files I get the following error:

Installation was canceled.

Windows cannot copy files from D:\Sources to C:\$WINDOWS.~LS\Sources. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x8007045D

Any help???

Solve : Vista, games that are compatible??

Answer»

Are there any games that are compatibl with this OS? Is there a place to find a list of what's compatible with vista? (in the vein of older games like doom, quake, duke numken 3d,etc.)I'm not into games on the pc, but I'd think PRETTY much everything that works with XP would be fine - if not in Vista's native mode then certainly in XP Compatibility mode.Games I have include Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Quake 4, Duke Nukem 3d, Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, Need For Speed High Stakes, Age of EMPIRES +ROR, Age of Empires 2 +AOC, and quite a number of others.

Specifically, Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, and Duke 3d don't always work with their "original" game file; for example, because Doom, Doom2, Quake, and Duke3d are DOS programsm they have a number of ISSUES with windows NT based systems.

However, these programs have also had their source code released, and it was gobbled up by enthusiasts, who quickly made "ports" that ran on windows systems, Linux systems, mac systems, etc, natively; they also include features like the use of OpenGL or high-resolution textures.

It's quite easy to find a port, if they exist, for your game; Just search for Game +windows ports, and you should get several hits. for Duke3d, I RECOMMEND eduke32 by Terminix; for Doom, I recommend gzdoom, (a variant, gzscoredoom, is really fun too) for quake, there are a lot to choose from; I use qrack and joequake, and fitzquake. Quake 2 is pretty much a choice between quake 2 evolved and Quake2XP, both of which ADD amazing effects like water reflections and use of shaders.Post of the Month nomination...both for it's brevity and accuracy....

Solve : Comp made loud noise, beeping, won't turn on?

Answer»

I have a Dell desk top, windows Vista, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB external hard drive.

I was working on the computer, no internet up. Only a Word Document up. I wanted to play a game I had installed on the computer over a year ago, Chuzzles.  I opened a folder I made for extra not often used games. I double clicked on the Chuzzles icon, but missed the icon. So I double clicked actually on it. It didn't open. I double clicked twice meaning 4 TIMES, by accident again. The Chuzzles screen came up, it was the not full screen one, so I clicked the full screen option.

The monitor then turned a blue and white fuzzy mess with 3 letters across the screen, one letter was "e" and the date 2010 came on the screen with it. Then my tower started making a loud whirring like an engine and there were 3 beeps that occurred over and over every 2 seconds.

At my brother's instruction I tried to turn it off at the tower with the powen button, didn't go off. I unplugged the tower at the wall. Then I tried plugging it in again, then pressed the on button. The computer went right back into making the whirring noise and the 3 beeps over and over and nothing came up on my monitor, black screen. I was really concerned at this POINT. Couldn't turn the computer off with the power button so I unplugged it again.  I waited half an hour before doing the start up process again: Still the noise, beeping, and won't turn off, and nothing on the monitor. I unplugged the computer, waited until the next morning and tried it again with the same results.

I was told by GeekSquad it'll cost 200 dollars for just a diagnosis. If ANYone can help me with what might be going on and if it might be a job for those GeekSquad people please do.

Thank you ahead of time for reading my long description and any help you give. If you have questions for me, I'll be waiting by this other computer to respond. I'm hoping for a resolution. THANKS!Forget Geeksquad...let's save you some cabbage if we can.
If it's been off for awhile power up...tap F8 repeatedly before you see the Win splash screen...this will load safemode...
1st thing to TRY is Last known good config...select that and re-boot.
If that does not work boot into safemode w/networking...
See how things run in this mode and report back with your findings...That sounds like something I can definitely do. My computer is at my Mother's house and I won't have access to it until Friday, so in that amount of time I'll come back here and let you know how it went. Thanks for the help. My cabbage could very well be needed for other things this month!

- JenniferGood news! I tried the computer again and the loud noise and beeping was no longer there. When I started it in the normal mode I faced a few new problems which 5 restarts eventually cleared. Thank you for the suggestion, I'm SO glad it works again. I couldn't deal at this time to lose such a vast amount of work that I had done as an artist between 2004 and 2010! Thanks again!

- JenniferJennifer...that's great news...
However that machine does have issues apparently so we need to think about backing up the stuff you don't wan't to lose....
What are your thoughts on that ? ?I had the same thought as you with the back up idea, yesterday night I purchased Carbonite backup and am currently allowing to back up my files. Thanks for all your help Good for you...

More people should get serious about a decent backup strategy. For me in the past, the money was the thing stopping me from backing up files. But after this almost loss, I realize how important my work is and what the loss of it might cause in me and my family and my job and my future. That's what made me think that it may not necessarily be a monetary loss if I lost all my files, but it certainly is important and definitely worth 55 bucks a year.  In the past I've lost all my files due to computers getting viruses or affected by lightning. It was horrible. But I only had one year's worth of work on them. THIS computer I had 6 years worth of material....that's huge. I was busily all those years building a work portfolio to represent myself as an artist, writer and musician. If I lost that it'd be a horrendous blow. So I'm glad this wake up call came to me and that it wasn't total destruction and now I've done something to help myself. Indeed others should realize the importance of backing up files. Just wanted to say thanks for your help and concern. I'm wiping the sweat from my brow and saying "whew, that was a close one"  Jennifer, when you say "the money" I assume you mean the cost of a good backup APP. Guess it's a bit late now, but there are many good, free backup utilities available. I'm a big fan of disk imaging as a backup solution and have been using Acronis True Image for many years. Acronis is not free, but a number of similar utilities are (http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml).And Welcome Aboard BTW...

Solve : My Hard Drive is Gone...?

I recently received the blue screen with an error message of C0000102 stating that I needed to run the chkdsk. Also, it didn't allow me to run in safe mode, it only allowed me to 'try to repair windows'...so, I attempted to restore my computer. It wasn't doing anything after 45 minutes so I shut it down manually. When I restarted it my hard drive was GONE. I tried to reinstall Windows but since I am missing my hard drive it won't work.

HELP! Unless there's a thief in your home the hard drive is STILL there. If you are prepared to start from scratch, boot to your OS CD and choose the option to first format, then install the OS.So you aborted a chkdisk run ? ?

This normally  happens because of impatience on the User side of the machine...and usually never results in a favorable outcome.

What exactly happens now when you boot up ? ? you'd better try ...the' live cd (like winternal ERD commander) and check your harddisk ......
otherwise
you need to make your disk to be clean by using seagete seatools to check your disk

I hope that will help you to be strong your hard-disk....

HELP!

Try running SpinRite (see www.spinrite.com). Try level 2 and/or level 1 as your first option (this will take a couple of hours) and if this works (make sure it has has NOT flagged areas that need additional analysis, this "may" indicate that the drive has a hard failure. If level 2 runs without issue then try level 4 - this can take a LONG time if it finds errors and attempts to repair the errors. I've had drives run in this mode for a week or more (yes 7 days or more solid). If you encounter a red screen at level 4 you have a dead hard drive and your only option is to get a new hard drive and start all over. SpinRite has saved me more than one. I ALWAYS run SpinRite against any new drive before installing in my PC. As time permits I run SpinRite as maintenance. I'm so sold on SpinRite that I have one small tower that does nothing but run SpinRite. I currently have about 60 hard drives. If it's not ok

Solve : ran Partition wizard, now nothing?

Answer»

My son's laptop had a C: drive of 60Gb and a D: drive of 60Gb.  The D drive had almost nothing on it, like 40mb, so I ran Partition Wizard on it to change C to about 115Gb and D to 5Gb.  The D was labeled as "Data" from the FACTORY.  Anyway, Partiton Wizard looked like it was working great, the laptop went to reboot, and now there's nothing but a black screen with a cursor at the top left.   Anything I can do?  No, I don't have any discs for it.Quite frankly, you should complain to whoever told you to do this.
With any new computer, especially a laptop, do not change anything that was set by the factory until you know exactly what you're doing.
The factory settings are the right settings for the computer. They have years of experience in doing this sort of thing. Whoever told you to change things is a very irresponsible and uninformed individual.
You should contact the manufacturer of the computer and explains what you did. They may perhaps be so kind as to sell you a suitable recovery CD that will help restore your system. But there is no guarantee of that. In the instructions provided by the manufacturer they give you warnings about making changes to the system.I appreciate all the warnings, but that doesn't solve the problem. here's how to solve that problem..... at least the most simple way buy a COPY of vista or win 7 and format the drive adn restart, because to my knowledge that overwrote data on drive C: and now files needed for operation are missing/damaged. so sorry but the above posts are right whoever told you this didn't tell you what you were doing to yourselfThe first rule when running ANY drive level utility is to first create an image of the drive so you have somewhere to go in the event something goes wrong - but as you say, that doesn't help you now.

I don't know that you "overwrote" c: drive as the POST above suggests if all you did was extend c: drive, but not being there I can't be sure exactly what you did do. Regardless, one way or another you're going to need an OS CD to get to repair options at the very least or, as suggested above, to start from scratch and reinstall. Alternatively you can slave the drive just to see if your data is still there.cantfigureitout -

  • at this time DO NOT do anything else to your HD.
  • Purchase a copy of R-Studio (this is what I use), see www.r-tt.com.
  • Purchase a USB external enclosure that will house the HD in the laptop
  • remove the laptop HD, install in the USB enclosure, connect to another system
  • On the other system install R-Studio
  • Run the R-Studio scan (select the option to save the scan on the HD where R-Studio is install - DO NOT save to your son's drive) - This scan can take hours to days. My worst case was five days
  • If R-Studio (OH BTW you will encounter a learning curve for R-Studio) finds stuff it will label it "recognized", double click on the "recognized item", now you have access to the data and can copy it to the system where R-Studio is install (NOT your son's laptop). Now you have access to your data
  • Purchase a copy of Windows 7
  • Reinstall the drive back in the laptop, boot off of the Win7 CD, install
  • Network connect to the other PC and copy the desired data to the laptop
  • Reinstall all of your applications (you need application CDs for this step
  • Find a BIG stick and apply firmly and numerous times to the person that told you to run the Partition Wizard

Good luck
BTW you might contact Dell and see if they can send you a set of recovery CDs that will take the system back to factory install.Pretty drastic measures it appears...yes that is what it appears to be but with drastic problems come drastic fixes sometimes

Solve : Windows 7 having problems with some program?

Answer»

When I said "it wouldn't hurt to try," I meant updating your drivers.

Whether or not the game is Live is no longer relevant.well, I went to ASUS, did everything so I could get to the updates for my laptop, but I couldn't FIND anything for the drivers.

I downloaded an update for the sound and lifeframe prorgam, which afterwards didn't work anymore.

And last night, I started my laptop and my touchpath doesn't work anymore, nor the left or right button. I have to work with my mouse now...Since the machine is 2 weeks old i'd exercise the Warranty on it...Well, at first I thought it would be the one laptop I had, cause it even caused the wireless system in the laptop to shut off. So I did demand a new one. Now it seems that the first laptop was perfectly fine, it was just Halo 2 who made it crash etc. So, I got the new one (same one) and tried REINSTALLING everything that I had on that first one. No problem, until I tried Halo 2. It started to randomly crash again so I had to RECOVER my laptop. It works fine, as long as I don't install halo 2 on it.

Is there someone who knows if it would be possible to somehow devide my C: into 2 parts and somehow manage to install vista on that other part? Perhaps it works then. I also figured out sometime if it was possible to have only 2 processor taking care of a certain program. Since someone else here said that my dual core processor might not be compatible with Halo 2, that might work as well.I doubt switching to Vista will solve your Halo issues...
Fact of the matter is laptops are carp for running high end games compared to desktop machines...
That being said you may want to visit the Halo Forums for a solution if you're COMMITTED to running it on this laptop.
Perhaps someone there has ran into the same issues.

Solve : Need help with Windows?

Answer»

My operating system is VISTA.  I have three profiles but only having a problem with one.  Two things that are happening but they are hard to explain...which is why I am having a hard time searching for help.

1. When using internet EXPLORER and I type something in the search engine blocks the screen flashs (or it looks like it refreshes as I type).  It then highlights what EVER i am typing.  If I don't stop when it flashes then i end up typing over the words.

2. When I click on the tool bar or the start menu and go to open up something I have to work very quick or the lists disappears.  For example if I try to go to Start> All Programs> then Microsoft office >then Word...if I dont click quickly I will never be able to open it.  Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries.

This is very FRUSTRATING.  I tried SCANNING to see if I have a virus or mal but nothing shows up.  Anyone have any ideas??

Probably corrupted profile. Create a new one.

Solve : Laptop freezes while running programs, virus protection software.?

Answer»

Hi, sorry if this has been covered already, if it has please just direct me to where i can find out what i need.

I have a Dell, VOSTRO 1500 running Microsoft vista basic.  I dont know the year it was made, but it isn't that old, maybe a 2007-8.

It has a tendency to lock up often.  Especially while i'm running programs like Warcraft three, Microsoft word, internet explorer, or when i scan with Webroot Antivirus.  (it actually wont FINISH the scan, ever.)  I would think that the video card is good enough to run warcraft three or any online video reqs, but i've heard that that can be a common cause, so i'm not too worried about the GAME running well, i just need the computer to run.

I've run Defrag and scandisk, and most of the time it wont finish scanning or defragging either before it locks up.  (I dont run them at the same time.)

My virus program, Webroot Antivirus is out of date, but not by that much.  When i run the program it finds two viruses, a Trojan and something called a Mad.d or something, but locks up before the scan is complete and i can quarantine them.

I've given the computer to a friend from geek squad who RAN some tests/ said she fixed it what she thought the problem was.  It still locks up though.  This was a while ago so i can't be specific on what she did just yet, but it didn't work either way.  It seemed to get better for a while, but after about a week it went right back into the same problems.  Right now i'm running a test that i found booting it up from dos and going into the help mode, Under the symptom tree i found one that says "Computer Freezes often" and thats where i'm at right now.

Any other things i should mention?  I'm not great with computer's but i have done some reasearch online, just can't find anything that will help.  Any suggestions?

Solve : Bank Interleave Requested but not enabled.?

I hope this is in the right section, if not, i am sorry.

I have tried google and other places but have not found a solution.

Everytime I restart the computer or Turn the Computer on I GET the Message "Bank Interleave Requested, but not enabled"  Then I press F2 and it takes me into the BIOS, then I press Esc, then windows starts normally. Is there a way to Stop getting this message everytime I start the Computer?

Anyhelp is APPRECIATED, thanks. In the BIOS do you have your bank interleaving set at auto?I went into the BIOS settings and did not see anything about Bank Interleaving.

Try looking under Advanced and Memory settings.Im stlil not seeing anything. I went into bios and put the Default settings in and still get this message, theres got to be some way to get this gone.Sometimes this error message appears if pairs of RAM modules are not properly installed in the right slots, sometimes if only 1 module is installed it means there is a bug in the BIOS and a new version is NEEDED, however without the following information we are just GUESSING -

Motherboard make and model
Bios version
RAM modules TYPE, and which slots they are in
Is this a new build
Have you recently installed/removed/moved any RAM modules

Solve : Yahoo! Mail causing problems?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and am using Yahoo! Mail for my emails. But the ads on the right side of my screen are so terribly annoying and they seem to be crowding me, leaving me with very little space to type my email messages. Any suggestions on how to GET rid of these annoying Yahoo! Mail ads? Does anyone else use Yahoo! Mail and know what I'm talking about? Thanks.
MaryEfirst use firefox then get adblocker plus and try thatI have a Yahoo! Mail account.  I'm logged on to it now.  Yes, an add on the right side of the page consumes about 1 1/2 inch of space on my 19" widescreen monitor set a resolution of 1680 x 1050.  I don't really SEE it as being overbearing.

What size monitor and resolution setting are you using?  Do you maximize the browser window when viewing your email?

I'm not sure unlovedwarrior's suggestion will produce the results you want. It would suppress the ads but I believe it does not free up the space that would normally show an ad; it just creates a blank space there. To Soybean and unlovedwarrior...thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm not too sure about ad blocker plus and wonder if the problem might not be with Yahoo! Mail itself. Soybean, did you say you were logged on to Yahoo! Mail and you could see the ads as you typed your email message? I have another computer that runs Windows XP Pro and uses Yahoo! Mail Classic but when I type my emails there are no ads at all. So that's why I'm wondering if the problem isn't a difference between Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Mail Classic, which DOES seem to prevent the ads. My Windows XP computer has a 17" Plug & Play monitor on RADEON 7200 Family with a screen resolution of 1280x960. I'll have to check my Windows Vista PC for its monitor size and screen resolution. All I know is that the annoying ads with Yahoo! Mail are crowding my space for typing my emails. I do maximize my browser window when typing my messages. Any thoughts on Yahoo! Mail Classic's ability to block out ads? Thanks again, friends, for your assistance.
MaryEHere's a link showing what I see when I compose a message using Firefox on my Windows Vista latop:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/farmpond/forums/YahooMail-1.jpg.  As you can see, there are no adds at all on the right side of the window; that area shows the options for selecting stationery.  I am using the current version of Yahoo! Mail, not Classic. Soybean:

I can't thank you enough for the GREAT photo! Not only are there NO ads on the right side of the window but you obviously have plenty of room to type your email messages. Do you think a simple upgrade to the current version of Yahoo! Mail on my Windows Vista computer would give me the same view (or at least a similar one) and get rid of those annoying ads that are so bothersome now? Perhaps I'm using an older version of Yahoo! Mail. I think I might give it a try and see what happens. If you can, please reply. And thanks again so much.

MaryE I don't know why you are seeing ads on the right while writing mail messages. I don't have any adds either. Maybe it's because of some application/add-on that soybean or I don't have. There is a link under the subject line to hide the STATIONARY that will give you a little more room. You can also switch to the classic mail by clicking on "options" at the top right.Probably has every toolbar under the Sun installed...For me, no ads either, I've tested internet explorer 8 and I don't have any ad block utility associated with internet explorer (Except if IE came with something built in that I don't know).

MaryE, can you post a screenshot of what you see? I'm wondering why you're different when 3 people already confirm the same thing.

I believe some clarification on how Yahoo! Mail works is needed here.  Whether you use Yahoo! Mail Classic or the regular version is not something determined by your particular computer, it's something determined by your preference settings in your Yahoo account and those settings reside on Yahoo's web server, not your computer.  In other words, if you're currently using Yahoo! Mail Classic and you use a different computer to logon to your Yahoo! Mail account, you'll still see it in Yahoo! Mail Classic because that preference is associated with your Yahoo! Mail account which keeps it's settings on the Internet, not on your computer.  Does that make sense?

I don't know why you're seeing ads when, as 2x3i5x said:

kpac, just to be perfectly clear, do you mean when viewing the Inbox, or when composing a message?  As I previously said, I see an ad on the right column of the browser window when viewing Inbox but, when I start to compose a new message, that space that displayed an ad while viewing Inbox changes to show the stationery options for composing messages. No, not if composing a message.

Quote
leaving me with very little space to type my email messages
Sorry, I never saw the word "type".

Possible adware? With a simple change of screen resolution and moving the taskbar that was lining the the left side of the screen to its normal horizontal position across the bottom I believe I have greatly minimized my problem. Now when I type my emails my Yahoo! Mail screen looks exactly like the photo Soybean provided, with the stationery at the right instead of those awful ads. So far so good. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I checked and don't think any applications or add-ons are involved. As for "possible adware?," Yahoo! probably has a right to impose a fair share of ads. But it is a free email server and as long as I see this vast improvement I can certainly put up with some ads. Thank you to everyone for their input.

MaryE  Glad you got it sorted.

Solve : Windows 7 clean install question?

Answer»

Hey guys, I recently did a "upgrade" to WINDOWS 7 Ultimate from Windows Vista Home Premium. Installation went fine, until the FIRST time I had to login. I would get huge red letters that would say "ERROR, and it said cannot open file c:\recovery.dat". I didn't know what to do so I just ran my Vista Recovery DVD that came with my laptop and got back to my factory settings... I was thinking of running a clean install this time... but I was worried if I would get that error again. I was wondering, can I still run the Vista Recovery DVD after I do a clean install...? Kind of stuck here, I want to have Windows 7, but I don't want to get the error again and not be able to do ANYTHING about it... Thanks for the help in advance.

I have a Asus G50Vt-X1Out of curiosity, where did you get your Windows 7?Bestbuy, a lot of Asus users have the same recovery.dat prblem...if you don't believe me google it lolI'm not doubting you, I was just making sure it was legal.

Did you install the x64 or x86 version?Ah okay, 64bit, I'm running 64bit Vista. x64Did you install the Windows 7 drivers after the installation was finished?

Or did that occur during the installation?Idk if the drivers were part of the installation, I just kinda left the laptop while everything was installing...All I did was run the Win7 installation cd...I NEVER got passed the login screen. ACTUALLY I didn't even get to the login screen. It would go to the screen where you type in your password or whatever, but would just freeze and the ERROR thing would come up.I swear, I've seen very same topic at BleepingComputer    Yeah I've posted it at a few sites. Just trying to DIFFERENT peoples thoughts on why its doing it and the solution to the problem.

Solve : Black screen and F8 doesn't work?

Answer»

I am running windows vista 64bit. I shut down my computer at night and when I went to reboot in the morning I came back to a black screen with a curser.  When I hard booted it, it did the check DISK for errors and then went to a blue screen.  After I rebooted from the blue screen it opened to windows figured I had a problem so ran a virus scan, that rebooted my computer on its own and went to an all black screen thats said A boot disk error occured press cntl ALT del to restart, did that a couple times kept bringing me back to the same black screen.  Pressed F8 to get into safe mode worked once started loading safe mode froze and restarted now all I get is a black screen with a blinking curser line.  And now to top it all off F8 doesn't work at all to get me to the Advanced windows option screen, I can only get into bios and boot.  I don't have a windows disk as it is partitioned on my computer (which is the stupidest thing EVER done by stores) but i did make a recovery disk but when i try to run it from my disk drive nothing at all happens.  If anyone could help that would be great.  also my hard drive was very hot thought maybe it needed AIR so it is now still connected to the computer but free of anything and it still gets pretty hot.Hie

First, anex your hard disk as a slave to another computer and save your files. Then try repair  using the installation disk.

Or else  you need to reinstall from scratch. Your computer is infected

Guug luckyWhen you say nothing happens when you try to "run" the recovery disk, what does that mean? Are you actually booting to that disk? Make sure the cd drive is the first device in the boot order in your bios.I am not to sure how to annex my hd but will try and figure it out.  Yes my cd drive is first, I found a boot/fix disk that I can use it takes me to a screen as if I pressed F8 but only will let me us a command prompt and fix START up, when I use fix start up one time it will say everything is fine the next it will just tell me to unplug everything except my mouse and keyboard.  I don't have the installation disk for vista what ever it is, is partitioned on my computer and I have no idea how to get at it.  So I know it goes through to the disk because the other one works but when I put in the recovery disk it runs like its going to start up for like 5 mins then stops, the whole time being on the black screen with a blinking curser.Do you happen to know anyone with a Vista CD ? ?No i have an XP disk is there anyway to just install xp instead? If I lose everything than I lose but at least it will work, plus I am thinking of getting windows 7 but don't wanna but it if this comp is screwed upIf you want to wipe it and install XP i'd collect the neccessary drivers beforehand...

Solve : Problem with "start" panel?

Answer» HI -
This is not a big problem but I can't fix it.  When I CLICK on the "start" icon the usual panel comes up.  Everything is fine except the right hand side of the panel which is about 1/8 inch too short.  I have tried to drag the side further to the right but no luck.  I have tried every thing I can think of but nothing works.  This started a couple of weeks ago but I have no idea what I did to make it lose i/8 inch on the right side.  I have not ran a back up.  I am hoping there is a simpler answer.  I am running Vista Home Basic   32 bit.
Thanks    BobAre you using "classic" start MENU by any chance?Broni -
Thanks for the reply.  I don't KNOW what the "classic" start menu is.  I am using the "start" just like I have always done it.  One thing I notice today is that the printing on the monitor is very small.  I have no idea why that is that way or how long it has been that way.  I know how to make it bigger and will do that later.
BobBroni -
The problem is solved!!!  When I made the print size larger it took away the right side of the "start" panel.  I was using a costum font size so I could read easier.  I will go back to the default.    BobCool

any thoughts would be appreciated. So  this is a new  desktop PC with a DVD drive and you added a DVD drive.
Is that right?
Why not just remove the old drive? Save it for when you need it.
There is little advantage to having multiple CD or DVD drives.
Or and I missing something?1)  so you now have your orginal HDD and the one that is the dvd HDD? (also does it show your new dvd burner)
2) do u have 1 HDD and no dvd burners shown in "My Computer"

QUESTION.... did u set the pins on the back of the dvd burners to one "master" and teh other "slave"?master and slave dvd's? have only heard of master and slave hdd.

all is normal. 1 hdd and the new dvd. old dvd appears to be available but is listed as a hard drive and cannot be accessed.
don't really have to have the original dvd but it does make it easier to copy. i have a number of manuals on disks that i routinely copy.on the master/slave.  i've only had master/slave ISSUES with hdd in the past.  on other computers   had two cd drives that were both listed as cd and worked fine.

How many available on that board ? ?thanks patio,
not sure of number you  mean.  have 2 sata drives now.  orig hdd and new dvd.  mother board has 4 ports.
check of bios shows the orig dvd (atapi) but on the explorer it shows as a hard drive that can't be accessed.

i've switched the jumber on the back of the drive from "cable select" to "slave" but no difference.

alas, my dream of having 2 dvd drives is dashed.  thanks for all your help.Your MBoard manual will show the # on each SATA port...

Solve : What is a Non-authoritative answer: ??

Answer»

I got this in Command Prompt it said this

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: microsoft.com.imran
ADDRESS: 81.200.64.50Authoritative means "can be relied on". When doing an nslookup, an authoritative answer would only come a name server which has been configured to be in charge of the domain, while a non authoritative answer would come from the rest of the NSs in the world. It is an answer that they received after asking somebody else or using their CACHE and are FORWARDING to you, not an answer that they are responsible for.

So do i use that  81.200.64.50 for ip or dns address or something?Microsoft.com.imran does not exist. So you got 81.200.64.50 which is the Ip address of advancedsearch.virginmedia.com

What are you trying to do?

Well IM just that person who had the DNS server problems, do i have to put that has my ip address then because i have it on obtainan  ip address automaticallyIf you are on dsl or cable you obtain one automatically. You do not have to do anything. You would only see that message if your dns was working. If virginmedia are telling you there is no problem maybe you NEED to get your phone line checked by BT.

"NO DOWNLOADING"i did that thru cmd but it DENIED me. i even tried to hack a new admin but denied. it says its a built in admin. i tried to disable it but no luck denied.I doubt you followed all the info in Sage's link...running from a LiveCD does not bring up an Admin pword prompt...SEEMS you have trouble following directions, maybe the builder could help you crack the password. I can't!!!. Read and follow the instruction on the link, then reinstall the OS. That's as far as I can go
