Based on that information you headfirst contact the vendor and then contact Dell.
You did not state what model it is. The vendor may be AWARE of a recall or possible problem. What you describe may be a SERIOUS.

This is not making a joke.
We COULD suppose this is a laptop. There are some very serious problems with laptop batteries that the mass-media downplays.

Can this laptop run well without the battery installed? Quote

If you mean installed programs, the programs would have to be uninstalled and then reinstalled to the new location. Quote from: stevener11 on January 14, 2010, 04:15:43 PM

Solve : How do you disable a program in the registry?

Answer»

HI

If i navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\Startupreg.
How would i disable one of these programs in the registry

Would you edit the "key" > value data  in the right hand pane for the program.

Leave the registry alone.

Use this: http://startupmanager.org/ Quote from: kpac on January 17, 2010, 04:50:26 AM

Leave the registry alone.

Use this: http://startupmanager.org/

I understand your point, but i was following an artical on disabling programs from the registry, it TOLD you where to go to disable them, but did not tell what you have to do from there, its really for information only or FUTURE reference only.

I have autoruns, and defender anyway to disable programs

Alright, well, for future reference, thats key doesn't deal with any startup programs, it's actually a key sued by msconfig during a "DIAGNOSTIC" startup (or something along those lines). the keys used by windows to start programs are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Infectious programs generally (for some of the nastier ones) also install Winlogon hooks:

XP:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

Vista:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions

Another VECTOR is using the "appinit_DLLs" value, in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows.

More info in AppInit_dlls value:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197571

Programs could also change the association of exefiles, so that instead of running the executable directly (%1) it instead initiates the malware program with the exe file as an argument; for example, by changing it to drive:\Path\to\malware.exe" "%1" %*  It usually infects the program in some way and then runs it, so it might not even be noticed.

And of course, the StartUp Folder can be used to run programs every startup, but malware generally stays away from that for some reason (perhaps too obvious)

Here's an interesting article detailing some of these keys and how to use them to remove infections if it ever becomes necessary. It's aimed at windows 2000 but in general aside from moving a few keys (such as the winlogon notify key above) most of the information is still relevant. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 18, 2010, 12:27:35 AM

OK BC_programmer, i am not infected or anything like that, i have just found this key the same time you replyed, which would haved saved me 15 miniutes
I have 5 programs listed in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Now would i just DELETE one of these entries, so that is does not load on startup, is this the same a disabling it, or am i removing the entry completly..?

yes, you delete the entry.

Normally, autoruns and other such programs make a backup of them. That is how you see, for example, unchecked items that you can reenable. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 18, 2010, 12:49:11 AM

GREAT
OK, BC_programmer, got that "just delete the entry"  to the program

Now the artical says  " you can add entries here also, but we recommend that you use the "windows run at startup policy settings" to add programs that you want to run at startup"

Is this group policy, which i don't have on the vista machine, so i would be interested in how you would add a program in this registry key.

Solve : Unknown server in Command prompt?

Answer»

Is there anyway i can solve this? Not without more information...no.well its says

 nslookup ping

server: unknown
adress:192.168.1.1

*** Unknown can't FIND ping: non existent domain.

You are asking your name server to resolve the name "ping"? What do you suppose that will do?

Anyhow, the REASON for the "unknown" name for your dns server is that there is no PTR record for 192.168.1.1.in-addr.arpa. Without a reverse lookup zone configured you will see this error. To resolve it, create a reverse lookup zone on your DNS server.

Oh ok, sorry but how do it? im not very familiar with DNS server and that sort of stuff

Thanks If you are network admin look in server manual or documentation. If not, contact your network admin or ISP. But if you are getting DNS why worry?

Solve : Removed malware and now Internet will not work in Windows 7?

Answer»

I have a HP Dv6226 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate (Evalution copy Build 7100) which I upgraded a few months back on-line from Window Vista.

I recently got some pop ups that kept flashing me virus alert and whenever i try to run any program it says "Application cannot be executed. The file  **** is infected......." (not even a command prompt or notepad can be opened but with multiple try sometime i get the command prompt but it is ridiculous).

Before looking into this forum i tried Installing MBAM - Malware byte in normal mode, but it blocks it from installing even if I try to rename it before downloading.

Then I GOOGLE'd and searched this forums and tried the instructions on a couple links. Superantispyware and a couple others were not getting installed at all. I get the installer screen and quickly it vanishes before i can access ANYTHING. i tried renaming it with .SCR instead of .exe but still same issue.

I did luck out finally and succeed in installing hijackthis under the name iexplore.exe. Also my avast anti virys program found nothing after a full scan.

So I succesfully ran hijack this and then removed the following :

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Afterword I restarted computer and ran combofix and though I believe it stated compatibility issues with Windows 7 it just started running (I may have hit OK too many times?) So it did its 50 something stage scan then deleted a bunch of files then rebooted the computer.

Upon reboot computer MENTIONS it is missing some sort of .dll file I beleive (it was late and I didnt write down the name ugh) everything seems to be working fine now but the internet signal bar icon shows a big red x through it. It says not connected and no internet connection available. I know my wireless networkis working fine as I confirm that by USING my work laptop to connect to my wireless network normally.

When you troubleshoot it (by right clicking on top of icon and slecting troubleshoot problem) it says troubleshooting could not find the problem. However when you view detailed information (by clicking the link at the bottom of the nework diagnostic indow that said it couldn't find the problem). It lists that WLAN autoconfig service could not be started. So then I went to the services list and when I tried to manually start the WLAN autoconfig service, it gave me the following error:

Windows could not start the wlan autoconfig service on local computer error 1075: the dependancy service does not EXIST or has been marked for deletion

Can someone please help me get me internet working again? I have the log report from combo fix . The last thing I tried is doing a previous restore point but my restore point option was shut off so I don't have a previous restore point. HELP!

Solve : computer shuts down unexpectedly, asks if i want to save settings first?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP on a Gateway laptop.  I just started having this problem yesterday and I've searched all the forums and haven't found an answer.

Approximately five minutes after starting up the computer unexpectedly shuts down.  I don't think it's an overheating issue because when I'm in firefox it asks if I want to save the settings or close all tabs.  It gives me that option for about 3 seconds and then shuts everything down.  I tried running AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy to see if I had some problem but to no avail.  I also tried system restore to an earlier date and I thought that fixed the problem.  The computer was working for a good 45 mins or so but then shut down unexpectedly again.  Since then it's been shutting down every 4-5 mins.  I'm in safe mode right now hoping it doesn't shut down before I finish typing this.  If you have any ideas please let me know!  Thanks! Are you running on battery or AC power? When running battery only the computer will shut down when battery power is too low. If the battery is old, it can show fully charged, yet still only have an up time of a few minutes.I'm running on AC power.  I think I solved the problem.  I went into gpedit.msc and made it so that no one is allowed to shut down.  This means that I have to do a harsh shut down everytime I want to shut down but it has temporarily solved my problem.  Maybe not the best solution but one that works for me for the time being...If anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them.  Thanks. You might LOOK at the Event Viewer and see what process was shutting you down. Quote from: tdooris197 on January 18, 2010, 06:34:40 AM

That's a TERRIBLE solution. You did not say if you ran a full scan with your anti virus utility - you should do that now. Also run a scan with MalwareBytes. AdAware and Spybot are useless these days and if I were you I'd uninstall them and keep MalwareBytes.Ok I didn't realize they were obsolete.  I ran a full antivirus scan but haven't tried malwarebytes.  I appreciate the feedback I don't know that much about computers.  Thanks.AdAware is absolutely obsolete. Spybot is simply no longer best of BREED and not nearly as effective as MalwareBytes or SuperAntispyware.Ok I ran malwarebytes and it didn't find ANYTHING.  For now my temporary solution is working for me, if anyone has any other ideas please let me know.  Thanks.Does the problem also occur in safe mode?In safe mode it is fine. Then it is either MALWARE or something loading with your system.  The first thing I would do is head to the malware section of this forum and follow the instructions at the top of that page. I still believe your problem is caused by malware. If it turns out I'm wrong we can start disabling startup items - but I'd bet it's a trojan or virus.

Solve : PC shuts off during gaming.?

Answer»

I searched the forums in an attempt to find if someone else suffered this problem. I found similar problems, but none of them are 100% what I'm grappling with.

The problem is simple and affects on every single game that is on my computer. Unreal III, FarCry2, Prototype, all of the games I play on the PC are only playable for about ten, fifteen minutes at most when without warning, the computer shuts down, and then starts up on its own. After it restarts, it takes me to a menu where it tells me that the computer as not shut down properly. It asks if I want to run in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and a few other options. The thing is, it only does this during games. All non-gaming programs run flawlessly.

I know it's not anything involving a bad graphics CARD or insufficient memory, I purchased a new graphics card less then four months ago, and it didn't fix the problem. I have 6 gigs of RAM, so I know the memory isn't an issue. The only paths I haven't explored yet are insufficient power supply, or overheating. I don't think it's overheating though but I could be WRONG. I constantly update the graphics card.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Overheating...DLoad install and run SpeedFan...
Post your tempsDuring gaming? If so, I'm not sure if the data will remain after the restart. You should be able to alt-tab between your game and the Windows desktop to observe SpeedFan while the game is running.

If not, at least post the temps without a game running.Okay the first image includes the temperatures before I played FarCry 2, and each one after that was saved in about five minute increments until the last one which was taken about 25 seconds before the computer shut off.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Right. All of those flame icons tell us that your system is too hot and your hardware thermal protection is shutting you down. You can see the temperature progression from one screenshot to the next as it gets hotter and hotter.

What's the spec on that fan? It MAXES out around 1800, and takes a while to get that high like its old or dirty. If it is supposed to be a 5000 RPM fan, that would definitely be the cause of your problem. Even if it is supposed to be a 3000 fan. But a large fan might spec 1800, so I don't know what it is supposed to be.

Did you build this yourself? Did you apply thermal paste between the fan and CPU? Is it a laptop? Is it on a hard surface that doesn't allow the cooling vents to be blocked? If it is a desktop or tower computer, remove the panels and observe the fans. The screenshot only shows one fan. Is it the CPU fan? Maybe the CPU fan is dead and the fan being monitored is a secondary fan case fan or power supply fan. So look for the CPU fan spinning, and search for another case fan to see if it is spinning, and check to see if the power supply fan is blowing out its vents.I purchased almost as is. I've only added some peripherals like speakers, custom keyboard and mouse, (default graphics card burned out and was replaced somewhat recently as stated above).

I just realized the "fire" icon implications and ran Speedfan without a game running and it's giving me the same thing. I guess I am overheating even when no games are running. I clean the fan every once in a while.

Not sure what you mean when you say 1800/3000/5000. I don't know how to determine if it's a fan that's supposed to run at that speed. RPM is Revolutions Per Minute, which is how fast the fan spins. My Athlon CPU uses a small fan at 5000 RPM. My Pentium 4 CPU uses a larger fan that spins at 3000 RPM. Since you have an Intel Quad CPU, I'm betting you have the same fan as my Pentium 4. So if you are only running 1800 RPM when you are supposed to be running 3000 RPM, you are getting only half your CPU cooling air supply.

You can contact Gateway to confirm the fan speed. Okay. I took off the side panel and kind of dusted off the fan, which is SURROUNDED by a large, black cylinder which I think funnels cool air onto the board. I think that the compound between the heat sink and the fan or whatever is getting old. Maybe not, I didn't check very well. But I left the side of it off and the computer is running a little bit cooler. How do I get the fan to run at full capacity?

You should replace it. They are not very expensive. You can try to remove it and lubricate it, but I would not consider that to be a reliable fix.Well I just tried something. I shut down the computer, started it up again and went to BIOS and realized that the fan regulation was on. I turned that off and continued and now I've almost gotten it to go three times faster than before. No overheating or anything as of yet. I'm going to play a game in a minute and see how it handles it.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Much BETTER. Only 2 red marks for increasing temps at Core 0 and Core 1. Keep an eye on those.

Solve : Microsoft Works in Windows 7?

All I can say is - here and there and a couple of times a search turned up nothing, yet when I went back into works wp - there was 2 of my last data sets that couldn't be found!
And yes, on a n ew data set I always do 'save as'.
To sagebrush - thanks to you too.  But as you can see from above, bad guess but thanks anyway.

jddWin7 has "libraries'...
Did you check these for the missing files ?
On your user account in the Start menu open Documents...i'll bet you find them here. What is the path of your folder?

What is the path of the Works folder where you have found your files?
What is the path of your folder?  C:\Windows\Desktop\My Dataset

What is the path of the Works folder where you have found your files?
C"\Microsoft Work (I don't know - the Word Processor)
Did you find anything in the location Patio advised?

It's not a good sign that you cannot find things, yet you do not know the path that MS Works saves to.Yes, I have found some of my dataset in the 'libraries' but not all.
And as far as I know, when in Works, if it's and old dataset that is
being saved - in goes back to wherever it came from ( different places for different
datasets) but if it's a NEW dataset and you do a 'save as' it should be saved
wherever you tell it to be saved at, not some arbitrary folder that you never
heard of before. That's correct. UNFORTUNATELY, misplaced data is more likely to be a consequence of forgetting to change the default path when saving, or not noticing the path displayed before hitting save than any unreliability of Windows.

This is especially true when I am tired or in a hurry. Over many years of experience fighting Windows and being stubborn about wanting to use my own storage paths, I have learned that it is easier to go with the flow and use the OPERATING system the way it has been designed. This makes backups much less of a headache too.

As far as finding your missing files, I have also experienced your issue of Windows Search not being able to find files that I know are there, and when I follow the path with Explorer, they are indeed there, but for some reason Search could not find them. If you have enough idle time available on the computer, I would suggest allowing Index Service to index your entire computer. Then you can search for your missing files by file extension.Actually the index service does not need to be running for a complete search...
Use the *. method in the search window...
For example *.jpg will turn up all instances of .jpg files...

Be prepared for it to take awhile if you have lots of them. Many thanks to both jkolak and patio.  I'll press on from here and see if
I can let the system do what I don't want it to do?  I know that's not right
but you get the drift of it (I hope).  I do appreciate your help.
JerryBest of luck.

Solve : Can not do "System Restore"?

Answer»

When I try to do a "system restore" I get a message that says the system restore did not work because "an unspecified error occurred during System Restore". Does anybody know what caused the error and how I can fix the problem so that I can restore back to some point in the past. Thanks for any suggestions.
Windows Vista
E MachineIf you can't do a System Restore the regular way...you can always try Safe Mode...

Check this out: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/Hi Glitch
You were right. I did a safe mode and got a restore that worked like it is supposed to, HOWEVER, I tried to do a normal "system restore" and I got the same error message. Does this mean that I will always have to go to safe mode when I want to use "system restore" or is there some other answer?
Thanks for your time. BobNo, it means that Windoze System Restore sucks! I quit using SR a loooooooong time ago and started using this program>

http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/ERUNT/erunt.html

If you read the readme files you'll see why SR doesn't work.

Alan <>< Bobh,

Sometimes Vista will give you this error due to the amount of space you have allocated for System Restore. You can try adjusting the amount of space Vista allocates for System Restore, by following the instructions in this article: http://www.vista4beginners.com/System-Restore-Space-Used

Glad to hear you were able to perform the restore in Safe Mode...

Keep us posted...First of all let me explain. I am new to computers and am bumb.

I downloaded your program but I am not sure how to use it. I am running Windows Vista and I did not see where the program said it would work with Vista. Can you explain further? Thanks Bob

Hi Glitch
I went into the C:/ disk and deleted all but the last restore point. This gave me 86.6 free of 103 GB. It was 73.1 free of 103 GB. At one point running your suggestions it showed max show copy STORAGE space 15.513 GB. How much should I change this to? I hope I have made things clear as to what I did. Thanks BobBob...

If I read you CORRECTLY, you're stating you have 15.513GB of a 103GB hard drive set aside for System Restore points? That's over 10% of your hard drive capacity. I don't think you need that much for System Restore.

If you followed the directions from the link I sent...you'll see the minimum amount of space you can allocate for System Restore, in Vista, is 300MB.

If you ran vssadmin list shadowstorage, per those directions, you'd be able to see how much space is allocated for System Restore.

My recommendation would be to use about 5% of your drive's capacity for System Restore...more if you want more restore points...it's ENTIRELY up to you. The more restore points you have, the more space used on the drive...however, the more restore points you have, the better off you'll be when and if you need to perform a System Restore in the future.Glitch
The last panel shows:
used shadow copy storage space: 1.051 GB
allotted shadow copy storage space: 3.202 GB
Maxinun shadow copy storage space: 15.513 GB
Do you think I need to change anything? I am still not running a normal restore. Thanks Bobbig bumb or little Quote from: Bobh on March 08, 2009, 12:44:53 PM

maybe defrag to compact the problem or wash it out??Ale52
I tried to run your suggestion. I downloaded the program and DECIDED it was not what I wanted so I tried to delete it. Now I can't delete it. I get a message that it does not exist but it is listed in the programs and when I log on I get an error message. Can you tell me how to get rid of the program?
Thanks Bobale52
I got rid of the error message that said the program did not exist. I simple downloaded the program a second time and deleted it and everything related disappeared. Thanks for your effort. BobThe reason I use this program is that it is NOT tied into Windoze. It is completely independent of M$ that it isn't bogged down BY M$.

Did you read the readme file when you first installed it? It tells you plainly the reason for System Restore not working.

Glad you got thins squared away.

Solve : Recovery & reinstall?

Answer»

Any help/links greatly appreciated;

I have a Dell E521 desktop with Vista Home Premium.

I booted it, got to the sign on screen, typed screen name, PW, and when I hit the return key, Windows proceeded to go into "Windows is Shutting Down" and rebooted back to the sign in screen, as though I had selected the “restart” option. It, again reached the sign in screen and repeats the restarting cycle.

I was able to reach my desktop for a brief moment after a restore option (and in safe mode) but seconds later got "Windows is Shutting Down"

I tried selecting several "safe mode" options but it would CONSISTENTLY go into "Shutting Down"

On selecting a restore point It would give the error MESSAGE that there was were errors on the drive . After selecting the prompt to scan/repair , I would get the message it COULD not be repaired (with no more options) and I would get the error message, to repair START up that resulted in "start up cannot be repaired."

I found an article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894278 that describes a virus, Reloadmedude.exe. that would seem to somewhat explain the symptoms I have.

I would like to repair it but it may be easier in the long run to pull the drive and slave? it on another Vista desktop and get the my data off it before I reformat and reinstall Vista, which I would probably do regardless.

Solve : no wireless internet connection?

Answer»

After searching the forums, I am unable to find a solution to a problem that is driving me nuts! My dsl modem from Qwest bit the dust and when they sent me a new one it was a Morotola that is wireless capable. Previously, I had used a Linksys wireless router for my laptop. I have been unable to get my HP Pavilion to connect to the internet. It recognizes and connects to my network, but I cannot BROWSE the internet. I have tried all of the troubleshooting I found in the forms with no success (all of the commands relative to ipconfig, etc.). When I run a diagnostic after being unable to connect to the Net, the log tells me that the winsock portion is fine and there are no problems. I spent hours in ONLINE chat/troubleshooting with Qwest and HP. I even had a stress test done on my computer hardware. If anyone has any ideas about what I can try, I would really appreciate the input. There was a previous problem where the person was using a wireless modem and that didnt let them connect either. I am thinking that these wireless modems are just really weak. Can you connect the old linksys router up to the wireless modem? I'm sure I can. I will try that. However, I brought my laptop in to my office and tried to connect here, also with no success. My coworker has no problem CONNECTING at the office, so I am still thinking it is some type of software issue on my HP. I did a system restore and down loaded all the new drivers for the net work card and modem. That didn't hlep either. Then it must be software issue. Are the drivers installed for the wireless card?Yes with the latest available from HP's website. What is make and model number of the laptop? Perhaps there is external hardware switch on laptop to turn wireless on/off?

Are you able to connect to internet using a "wired" connection? From any computer; desktop or laptop? It's an HP Pavilion. I don't believe it has a switch for the wireless modem. I am not able to browse the internet even when wired directly to the modem. I am able to ping and run ipconfig commands. Can you do a ping of google.com and tell us the results?Quote from: justdoyt on March 11, 2009, 04:32:57 PM

It's an HP Pavilion.

An "HP Pavilion" what?

The model number in the following example: How to Find Model Number is "dv9095xx".
SORRY, it's an 8301 nr. It does, in fact, have a wireless button which I made sure was on. A little further info which I don't know if very helpful...when I run the daignostic when trying to connect, I get "warn -- no default gateway". Is this normal on a wireless connection?Quote from: justdoyt on March 12, 2009, 11:42:13 AM
A little further info which I don't know if very helpful...when I run the daignostic when trying to connect, I get "warn -- no default gateway". Is this normal on a wireless connection?

1. No, it's not normal. You need a "valid" default gateway assigned either automatically or manually in order to reach the internet. Your computer needs to know where to route messages NOT destined for your Local Area Network (LAN); that is, the "gateway" to the OUTSIDE world.

2. When troubleshooting connectivity problems, it's usually best to get it working with a "wired" connection, before moving on to the additional complexity added by the "wireless" connection (mainly Service Set Identifier (SSID) and security).

3. Can you access internet via a "wired" connection at the office? If not, my guess would be the TCP/IP configuration for your network connections are not setup to automatically get IP address, subnet mask, default gateway address, and DNS address from a DHCP server. These can be assigned manually, but then the laptop would not connect when moved to a different network.

4. What operating system is the laptop using? Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, Vista?

5. May need the model number of the Motorola DSL modem to see what functionality (router, switch, DHCP) it offers.

6. Here is the USA support link for HP Pavilion 8301nr laptop.

Solve : Java error 0xc0000005 "Solved"?

Answer»

i have windows xp home sp3 now INSTALLED in preferance to xp pro (xp pro was showing error 0xc0000005 for about 3 weeks and some other minor errors ie a virus.so i figured i have no real necessity for xp pro and a cheaper option was to get xp home! now i have xp home installed i still receive the popup (windows needs to shutdown internet explorer! to continue click ok) this popup also shows the error number 0xc0000005. from what i have sourced from M/soft they inform me that this is related to graphics driver updates in conjunction with javascript updates so to all people who have this problem ensure you are d/loading the appropriate java script to match your graphics driver. i have this problem popup specifically on M/soft pages others seem ok to date ! but i do find it extemely hard to believe that M/soft are supplying virus ridden cds for d/load population i do not know if my system is sweet yet as i just updated 10 mins ago but will let you all know the real deal!! virus-cd-whook the problem does still EXIST athough i have a rather old nvidia 2 mx/400 there is still compatible java script AVAILABLE in their archives files to which mine are installed and compatible, so it may be due to another scenario, possibly my 3 day old registered M/soft cd home sp3 contains the same virus that spiders cd had ! what are the chances ...i would not think so due to LACK of posts regarding the same error info. if ANYONE can ellaborate on this topic i would be extremely interested thank you. what is syntax this occured on the old xp pro with the same error number!! thanks

I have been waiting to switch from XP to Vista until I heard that it has become a reliable system. I have been hearing from users and CHECKING internet surveys and I still get the impression it is not a very good system.
Will you give me an objective viewpoint on this subject? Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

Are you running a 64-bit OS? If not then it's likely you have more RAM then this is showing.

I Originally reformatted my laptop and setup a dual-boot between XP and Vista over 4 months AGO... and I can count the number of times I booted XP on ONE hand. Are there 64 bit versions of windows? That is true, I actually have 4 gigs of ram installed but am restricted to 3.5 by the os i guess. I don't have experience using dual operating systems. What is the advantage of this?Yes Vista does have a 64 bit version. It works well and most everyone here will tell you to go for it. Just do a full install and not a upgrade and you will be fine.

One last thing....check your hardware for drivers before you to the install. I find it handy to download and than burn them onto the DVD. This way you have them handy for the install.

Why?
Great question.
Since :
A) 7 hasn't been released yet...
B) It will take time to work out it's issues as well as it did Vista and all other major OS releases
C) It sounds LIKE more of an opinion than a solution.the guy was looking for an objective opinion I gave him one, and like i said WAIT for windows 7, VISTA has a lot of compatability issues with software aswell as hardware, windows 7 (beta) is been test driven at the minuet and it is the opinion of a lot of beta testers to be a far better os than vista...... I'll stick to my observations and you can have yours...Patio: windows 7 is more like an upgrade then a new operating system. As we all know, Vista is packed with bugs and issues, but windows keeps saying that windows 7 will be more of a gigantic update than an upgrade. So the bugs ~should~ be all worked out. At least this is what I have heard....lambo

Of course... none of these were substantiated at all. They were just the tech web-sites echoing what the people wanted to hear.

Honestly the only problem I've had with vista is that it makes me write more robust code. Not a bad thing at all. Additionally those "issues" I have encountered were easily remedied via a tweak of some form... just as with previous windows versions.

And of course the company is "Microsoft" not windows. But let's pretend that was a typo

Solve : installing new memory ???

Answer»

well exactly how much ram can the motherboard support? Can the PC even support more than 4gb?Probably not. But at the same TIME some older chipsets can only CACHE up to a certain address. For example- RAM addresses past 64MB or 128MB or so forth will not be cached, causing all use of memory past the cacheable range to always be accessed without the cache controller.

So what, some people think- it is still FASTER then disk! And they are right- except windows loads from the top of memory down, which means that almost all day to day tasks with memory will not be done through the cache controller.

I haven't a CLUE why this happens- most Cache limitations are PRESENT in Pentium 1 and Pentium 2 systems and their respective chipsets (the 440BX being an example- the first pentium compatible chipset only allowed for 64MB of RAM to be cached.

mid to late P2's as well as the K6-2 typically had a Cacheable range of 256MB.

the Cacheable ranges are usually announced on the post screen shown before attempting to boot.I guess having a lot of memory is good but there's gotta be a point when you don't need so much memory. Exactly how many programs are you intending to run at a given time and all? With win vista, a gig of ram takes care of windows vista's background processes and a gig or a gig and ahalf of ram should do you good unless you're some uber computer user breaking in....

Solve : Computer can't connect to the internet?

Answer»

I have a wireless router that I want to use to connect my laptop to the internet. When I bought the router, my computer connected perfectly WELL to the internet. However, I took the laptop to college and used it on the internet there for a few months. Now that I am back at home trying to connect to the internet using the wireless router again, my computer can't connect. My computer won't even connect to the internet when it is plugged directly into the modem.

It says that I am connected to the wireless network, but when I open a browser, the internet doesn't work. Signal strength is excellent.

I know the wireless router is okay since my home desktop computer connects to the internet just fine when plugged into it. I think some settings may have been changed on my laptop when I took it with me to college. How can I get my laptop to connect to the internet through the wireless router again?

I run Windows Vista on my Toshiba Satellite laptop. My router is made by DynexUnplug the router for 30 seconds.
Plug it back in, and wait another minute, and try to reconnect to it. Also try directly plugging your computer back in at this time.

I'm guessing its your parents internet as well? Make sure they paid their bill, if they dont have a computer or use the internet, they may have canceled.

Second, on the computer having the problems, press the Start menu button, and type in:
cmd
right click "CMD" and click "Run as Administrator"
In command prompt (CMD), type:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

Some of these steps may take longer than others.

Still not working?
On the wireless icon NEXT to the system clock in the system tray/taskbar, right click the wireless, and go to "Repair" (It may also be called Troubleshooting) it should automatically try to detect the problem. Be sure to tell us what it says.

I already tried resetting the modem by unplugging it and plugging everything back in. That didn't work. I'm 100 percent sure my parents paid the internet bill since I'm using the internet on the home computer right now. In fact, the computer I'm using right now is plugged into my Dynex wireless router, which is plugged into the modem. The internet works fine. It appears that it is my laptop that is the problem

I'm not sure what you meant by pressing the start menu button and typing in cmd. Am I supposed to click in "run" and type cmd into the box? If so, I tried that and right clicked. I couldn't find the run as administrator option.

So, I typed in cmd and brought up the command prompt. I can't do the other commands (such as ipconfig/release) because it says that the command requires elevation. I am my laptop's administrator (or at least I should be) since I'm the only one that uses it.

When I try to find the problem on my laptop by asking it to detect the problem, it says that I may be having problems with my DNS settings. Your in Vista, the start menu should be a search bar, and you should be able to click the start menu and just directly type CMD, however, if this is not the case, click:
Start> Run
type CMD, and click "Run as Administrator" in the run menu. Quote from: Zylstra on March 14, 2009, 06:00:55 PM

Solve : Adobe Design Premium complete uninstall help (Windows problem i believe)?

Answer»

Hi, i was hoping some of you may be able to help as the Adobe support seem to be a bit of a joke. I recently GOT a copy of there Design Premium package through my university, once i installed it half of the programs wouldnt open. They would show up in processes but not applications.. I wouldnt get any errors or anything, they just simply werent there.

After some research i discovered that a lot of the times the install doesnt work unless all adobe products are completely uninstalled from the computer. So ive been using this tutorial http://www.pixel2life.com/publish/tu...eir_solutions/ to remove it completely from my hard drive. However ive come a bit stuck where im supposed to start using the CMD box. I use the rmdir /s command and it says the folder doesnt exist, whereas i know it does because i right CLICKED on the folder path and pasted it into the box. And with the takeown command i dont understand what filename im supposed to put in?

I hope that makes some sense, any help with any of it would be really appreciated. Im using Vista 64 bit if that helps at all.

TomWhen I go to your link, it brings me only to the MAIN page, so I really don't know, where the tutorial is LOCATED.

I cannot open .PPS or .ppt files when they are received as an attachment in Window Outlook Express 6. I keep windows up to date daily. I'm not ready to utilize the free openoffice.org

I successfully downloaded the Micro Soft Power Point Viewer (I do not own the MS Office suite). I can open pp files when saved to any other folder IE; My Documents.

From O/L Express I can save the attachment to a folder for opening later but when I try to open it from O/L I get this MSG.

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel".

When I open the Folder Options control panel and scroll down the list of associations and file extentions I have listed the following:

.pps MS PP Slide Show
.ppsm
.ppsx
.ppt For MS Presentations
.pptx

On a similar note I have a second extention opening problem.

From a streaming video site like "MetaCafe' I downloaded to save a .flv file. From the My Video's folder I cannot open these TYPE files.

Windows media player only directs me to the internet to find a solution. Is not .flv files routine and used by many? Have you tried R clicking on the file and then selecting "open with", then choose the power point viewer. It has worked on every other computer I have built except the new one with vista. It doesn't matter WHETER I dd click it or rt click it. When I rt click attachment
in this case the drop down menue doesn't ask me what I want to use to open the file. Only the 'Run or Cancel tabs' of the Windows pop up appears.

get Klite Codec Pack for your media deals and have the software just get the defaults done for you and you play all ok.

Also I think you are asking ... "open with" option is missing and you want to have that option restored so you see it when you right-click on a file in windows explorer and I see you use Win XP. Now, I'm not sure why it's gone but try this ... Copy entire TEXT you see in gray box below to notepad, save and name it openwith.reg to a folder or desktop or somewhere you can find the file. Then double click the file you just made and say yes when it prompts if you want to add the info to registry.

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With]
@="{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With EncryptionMenu]
@="{A470F8CF-A1E8-4f65-8335-227475AA5C46}"

You can also try hold down shift when you right click you should get the open with command, that's how you got to it before microsoft made it part of the standard right click menu.

But the attachments, you are saving to your hard drive off of your email, not trying to open without saving first?

When I open the Folder Options control panel and scroll down the list of associations and file extentions I have listed the following:

.pps MS PP Slide Show
.ppsm
.ppsx
.ppt For MS Presentations
.pptx
So, did you try .pps MS PP Slide Show or .ppt For MS Presentations? What did you do?I didn't do anything. I don't know what to do.

From the error msg; all I can ASSUME is that if I have all these file extensions listed, they must be working.

Is there a process that I am missing?Quote from: tpolcha on March 13, 2009, 10:14:53 PM

When you open these files from My Documents, do you do that by double clicking on the file name or by opening Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and then using it to open the file? All I have to do is double click the file. It will automatically summons the power point viewer to open and play it. The viewer works correctly as advertised.

Be advised, I will be off the www for a while taking care of business. Lets keep the idea's flowing all before I begin making changes to a registry.

I appreciate your idea's.

Thanks.Quote from: tpolcha on March 14, 2009, 10:48:59 AM

Right if you solve you problem before registry ix considered then all is good. I haven't solved anything yet. The last question to me was; do I have to open PP viewer first or can I just double click the file from my documents.

I double click the file in my doc's and it open the viewer and then plays the file.

I am worried about making registry changes. I've never done it before. I think I understand the instructions but am also aware that someone can really mess up a PC in the registry. I don't know what 'get klite codec pack' means in the narative. Is this two seperate instructions? What is in that registry language (text)?

Thanks, T1. For the registry fix, it should either fix the problem or do nothing, but not affect your computer so don't worry, I've tried that fix before without difficulty! But make a system restore point if you feel worried so that you can restore if you really need to.

2. Here's the link to klite codec pack: http://www.codecguide.com/. Once you install it, most of your common video files should be playing with no difficulty as most of the required audio/video STUFF that windows media player or media player classic needs to read and play files should be installed.

Also, do check google if you don't know something like what klite codec pack was!

Yes, they were two separate things. You said open with option was missing and your flv files can't play. I provided solutions that worked for me, but I'm not at your PC and all PC's are different even if they're clones but should be working fine!

3. You don't have to open PP viewer first IF you got the power point files set to open with PP viewer as default (aka, file association is PP Viewer)

Solve : Which Partition am I in??

Answer»

Mine is a DESKTOP running Vista.

I have two physical DRIVES. Drive 0 and drive 1. Drive 0 is 40 gig and drive 1 is 500.
Drive 0 has three partitions: C, D, F. Drive 1 is G. The optical drive is E. There is a bootable Vista on C,D and G,
This all sort of happened when I had to reinstall Vista and erase Ubuntu. I didn't totally choose, a program did this for me.
When I boot I get offered a choice, either C or D. After that I lose track (forget) which partition I am in.
Now here is my question (problem).

Is there a handy way to tell what partition I am in after I'm up and running?

THANKS for any COMMENTS,
Ivan CopasThat's a convoluted setup.
If I were you I would just wipe out that drive and make one big partition. Then install windows on it.

Solve : power management (sleep) issues...?

Answer»

OK! I've got 32-bit XP, XP64, and Vista Ultimate x64 installed on my laptop and all drivers installed.

(laptop is a Toshiba SATELLITE L300-04N) with t3200 dual core

But I'm having issues in both versions of XP, namely when resuming from standby.

It resumes, but it's extremely slow. It takes almost a minute to show the start menu, for example.

processor usage ACCORDING to Process Explorer during this shows that "hardware interrupts" is consuming almost 40% of my processor time.

Vista Ultimate, meanwhile, has zero problems. You know my opinion about Windows power saving options, don't you?Quote from: Broni on January 10, 2009, 11:37:50 PM

of COURSE I did, silly

Actually, it's slow after resuming standby. It actually resumes pretty fast. But it runs slow afterwards

most of the solutions applied to incompatible hardware. I tried disabling/enabling power management for a few key devices that were known to cause problems, such as my Wireless-N, but no go.

It's almost as if the CPU doesn't wake up from standby, and is still running at low power. (for example, the sound plays really slow even)

I just discovered that I only have SP2 installed though(at least on the x64 XP install), so I'm going to see if Installing SP3 helps my issue.

there IS an SP3 for XP X64, isn't there?

Thankfully, everything works PERFECTLY fine with the Vista Ultimate Install.I have the exactly problem of using XP 64bit in my L300-04P laptop (I bought on the boxing day last year). When I resume from standby mode, it becomes very very slow. After about one minute, then the fan inside the laptop starts (it seems the cpu works very hard).
Has anybody solved this problem?

Solve : Laptop keeps crashing.?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm new to this site and HOPE I'm posting in the right place.

I have an Acer 5610 laptop with Windows XP Professional 2002 SP3 installed.

A couple days ago I was trying to put some video clips (from a Sony SR55EE - which I have done numerous times before) onto a disc when my laptop crashed. A BLUE screen came up saying 'Windows has encountered an error' or something; it went to fast to read it all. The laptop restarted so I tried again. Same thing happened...several times. This then caused a registry error.

I got the registry error fixed and today I thought I'd have another go at creating a disc. Laptop crashed again. I uninstalled the Sony software and re-installed it. No help it continues to crash every time.

I thought I would take it into a shop to get it fixed so I decided to back up my files onto disc. Again it crashed (the same blue screen every time).

Now I don't know what to do. I can't back-up, system restore won't WORK, I can't do anything.

Could it be a problem with the tray where the disc goes?
Do I have to reformat and hence lose everything?

PLEASE HELP. I'M GOING INSANE

Thanks

If I did I would have already done a full reinstall. With this particular computer it needs a Toshiba OEM ACT cd in order for it to take the number. Toshiba, eh? I wonder if it has a Recovery Partition. You may want to give that a shot.

http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=toshiba+recovery+partition&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=toshiba+recovery+partitiQuote
To access the Toshiba recovery partition, power off the laptop. Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

Note that this erases all data, and reloads all factory default software. Be sure to back up all your important personal data beforehand!

Doesn't work on this laptop Ok, tried the repair mode off of the vista cd. Still nothing. It went and said it was fixing problems for about 10 minutes, then it rebooted and the problem still existed. When I try to wipe and reload off of this DVD it says that the Key is wrong.I suggest contacting Toshiba and ordering the proper Recovery CD's...

Solve : Laptop Battery Falls Out, Now Vista Doesn't Boot?

Answer»

Laptop in question: HP Pavilion DV2000, running Windows Vista Home (I think 32-bit).

Today, I was using my laptop, running on battery power only. Unfortunately, the battery no longer locks. I moved the laptop and the battery fell out. Naturally, as was not plugged in to an external power source, my laptop shut off.

Upon re-inserting the battery (and plugging in the laptop to an external power source for good measure), I received the "Windows Error Recovery" screen, presenting me with:

SAFE Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Start Windows Normally

I tried "Start Windows Normally", and after a LOADING screen (Microsoft Corporation at bottom), then the screen went black. I could see the mouse on screen, yet Vista would not boot up.

I manually shut down my computer and this time selected "Safe Mode": same thing, loading screen, then screen goes black with mouse.

I then hit "F7" to get to the "Advanced Boot Options":

Repair your computer
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Enable boot logging
Enable low resolution video (640 × 480)
Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
Directory services restore mode
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
Start Windows normally

I tried the options in BOLD, and the same thing happened each time: loading screen, then screen goes black with mouse, Vista does not load.

I also tried the "Repair your computer" OPTION, which got me to the "System Recovery Options" screen where I didn't know how to proceed...(so I simply restarted, never actually getting to the loading screen).

The only other possible thing was the fact that I had unchecked a few Nvidia options in "Startup" using "msconfig" (all of which were not necessary on startup). However, after doing this, I was able to restart the computer twice without any problems (before the battery fell out), so I'm pretty sure this isn't the problem.

I'm so lost!Does someone know anything about "Startup Repair" and how I would go about it?

Plus, does "Startup Repair" or "System Restore" leave me at risk for losing files? I ask simply because I have a lot of files which I have not backed up -- and I don't WANT "System Restore" to take my computer back too far (assuming before I downloaded my pictures, music, etc.)System Restore will only affect Windows files and nothing else....
Startup Repair will wipe all your Data and apps and take the machine back to Day One status...1) I was told that Vista creates restore points automatically at regular intervals (around every 24 hours of use) as well as whenever updates are installed. So I was surprised that when I went to System Restore, I HAD NO RESTORE POINTS...!? So I got stuck there.

2) I then tried to acess "Startup Repair" by inserting the DVD that came with my laptop. However, mine is a "Recovery DVD" and did not have the option for "Startup Repair", only to recover the entire system. So I got stuck there as well.

3) I even tried checking out the "Repair your computer" option in the "Advanced Boot Options" menu [F7 to get Windows Boot Manager, then F8 to get "Advanced Boot Options"]. "Repair your computer" then brought me to "System Recovery Options", where it gave me the options:

-"To access recovery options log on as a local user."
-"To access the command prompt as well, log on using an administrator account."

4) For the heck of it, I even did the diagnostic that checks the hard drive for error (found under "Windows Boot Manager"), and when I came back to see what had happened, it had completed and restarted the computer.

I really don't want to lose my files...If you can wait awhile Broni and a few others here have had experience with the Vista repair process...i have yet to TRY it out.

Thanks in advance for your help.Is this Internet Explorer?http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/browserhijack.mspx

( All the following information from the above site. )

<<<<<<"
Restoring a hijacked browser
The following six tips can help restore your browser's settings:

1. Stop cascading pop-up windows.

If a seemingly endless number of pop-up windows appear on your screen, you'll probably want to stop the deluge first. To do this in Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 while using Internet Explorer:

1.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, click Task Manager, and then click the Processes tab.

2.
Click IEXPLORE.EXE, and then click the End Process button.

This closes all instances of Internet Explorer. Then you can re-open the program to continue browsing as usual. To help prevent future attacks, you should also have a pop-up blocker turned on. To turn on the pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer 7:

1.
Click Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Privacy tab.

2.
In the Pop-up Blocker box, select the Block pop-ups check box. Click OK.

If you still experience the other effects of a hijacked Web browser, try the following:

2. Install preventive software such as the kinds mentioned in the preceding PREVENTING browser hijacks section. Many browser hijacking programs can be identified and REMOVED by downloading, installing, and running these programs.

3. Run the malicious software removal TOOL. This can catch some, but not all, kinds of hijacking software.

4. Reset Internet Explorer settings. If you're using Internet Explorer and your home page has been changed, you can OFTEN reset it yourself.

• Close any Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.

• Open Internet Explorer.

• Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.

• Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

• In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.

• When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the settings, click Close, and then click OK.

• Close Internet Explorer.

Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer.

5. Disable add-ons. Many browser hijackings come from add-ons, also known as ActiveX controls, browser extensions, browser helper objects, or toolbars. These items can improve your experience on a Web site by providing multimedia or interactive content, such as animations. However, some add-ons can cause your computer to stop responding or display content that you don't want, such as pop-up ads.

To learn how to disable add-ons in Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), read How do browser add-ons AFFECT my computer?

6. Removing unwanted programs with the Add/Remove feature

If you're ready to try some advanced removal methods, the Microsoft Help and Support article Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software provides additional steps you can take, including how to use the Add/Remove feature, the built-in program remover, and the program finder in Windows Explorer.

7. Empty the Recycle Bin when you've finished these steps, especially if you've removed an unwanted program. Then restart your computer.">>>>
