Solve : How to delete personal information from Vista??

Answer»

Hello all,

I plan on selling my laptop, but I bought it second-hand from another user and did not get any of the discs with it. I would like to keep the programs in tact as MUCH as possible, but delete any personal files and RELATED information securely. Is there a good method to doing this? I also have Vista. I have read that making a NEW user profile with administrator powers and deleting the files from the other profile may work, but I'm not 100% confident about that. So any tips would be great.

Thank you

SakkaThere may be a recovery partition on that computer. The recovery partition will format the drive - erasing all of the data and restoring the computer to factory settings.
When you first turn the computer on tap F11 or F10 repeatedly as it starts. Delete everything you want to delete like you usually do (with Delete button), then download ATF CLEANER, USE it to empty recycle bin and clean temporary files.

Then, set a new restore point as follows:
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Uncheck "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Your PC should now be alright, but all programs are still there. Thanks kpac - I really need to keep the programs on there. I'll give that a shot once I have all my files backed up of course. Thanks again!

I cannot access " Live Webcast " anymore. I just GET a page that SAYS -"Internet Explorer cannot open this page" It was working good till I down loaded a program. Solve : WMP12?

Answer»

A LOT of sites out there are uploading and distyributing copies of Windows Media Player 12. These are usually in spanish and have viruses in them. There are also a lot of places telling you to download certain files from then and modify the system32 folder to copy the Windows Media Player 12 folder they created to the one on your hard drive. You also have to mess around with .dll files which can be dangerous. I don't BUY into this stuff even though I tried to do the procedure and it didn't work. Win Vista blocked it. Is there anywhere I can go to get a working exe file so I can install WMP12 and keep using it for as LONG as i WANT. I know it exists as I have seen the screenshots and the program was bundled with the Windows 7 beta. I really want to try it. It is so cool and I have been trying to get it for months.

Please assist.Microsoft...
Although seeing as it has yet to be released it's probably a waste of time.

Solve : New HP?

Answer»

I just bought a new HP computer running with windows vista home premium but it's running slow at startup or not responding.

-AMD Phenom X4 9150e Quad Core Processor
-4GB system memory
-500Gb hard drive
-Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE Graphics card

That is the computers running system hardware.

When I turn the computer on, it SEEMS to load fine. I let it settle down and eventually try opening a file, opening Internet explorer, iTunes, etc, but sometimes nothing responds and have to shut it down improperly. Is this normal? My Gateway RUNS at lightening speeds and is about 6 months older which makes it 6 months old. The new week old HP runs slower. What's the deal? Make a warranty claim. Don't fool with it.
Maybe you should go to Dell?Try factory restore. Press F10 (or whatever key it tells you to press to go to restore) on bootup where you see HP or Compaq Logo

You lose all files, but computer is restored to the new pc configuration, which is whatever hp set it to before you EVEN turned it on the very first time.

Don't forget an antivirus software, AVG or AVAST or AVIRA are all good free options, pick only one. And you might want to upgrade your graphics card to a better one in Nvidia 8 or 9 series or ATI radeon 4000 series.

There is no point in fooling with a brand new unit; the warranty could get voided - there is usually a sticker which would get broken if you open the case. Even if it was not voided you could get lots of hassle if you monkey with things. If you call the HP helpline have the details ready, purchase receipt, unit SERIAL and warranty numbers, date of purchase etc. Very likely the REPRESENTATIVE will have a script to work from and they may well instruct you to try a restore before you can get any further action on their part. Take a note of when you called and what the rep told you to do. There may be a "ticket number" associated with the call which you should ask for and note. This will help if you have got a bad unit and have to return it. With a new unit you really have to go this way or you will be way out of pocket.
hey yeah don't break the pc but i'd do the HP system restore first? That wouldn't break the pc, it would only say it's successful or you didn't change anything. At least that's what I got when i tried on my pc a long time back when i still had xp.

if not working then go get it fixed with the hp guys.Quote

I'm sorry, but which part you didn't understand:

I understood but just a suggestion, if the hardware not broken.

But getting HP to fix your pc may be a better idea. HP might finally just upgrade your PC for all the troubles.OK. The point is this.
If brand new computer is already having some problem, it's in the best owner interest to have it professionally checked. Who knows what will happen, when the warranty is gone after one year.

Solve : Video Display Problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I own a Toshiba Satellite L30-105 LAPTOP, running Vista Home Basic, with 2.5 gig Ram, all is well apart from when I go full screen on YouTube, The Laptop freezes and displays a message stating that there has been an ERROR on the video display. I can get back to windows, but it's annoying. I have tried UPDATING the Video Drivers, but still get the same problem unless I go into advance settings and disable "Enable Desktop Composition", which cuts down on the Vista eye candy, shame as there seems to be no work around for this problem. I also tried Windows XP on this Laptop, but according to Toshiba - this Laptop is designed for Windows Vista and not XP, and it refuses to let me install XP, so it's back to Vista again - anyone out there have any ideas? thanks in advance.

Solve : RmMetadata problem?

Answer»

Hi,

I seem to have a problem with SOMETHING called "RmMetadata" The files are located on my external hard drive and are always being used. It MEANS I can never Safely Remove my Hard drive.
When I run handle.exe to see what processes are using the hard drive I get the following OUTPUT:

Handle v3.42

System pid: 4 3B4C: I:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$Txf

I was wondering If any ONE knows anything about these files and how I could change the location of them? or if I can delete them safely?

The files are only used by WINDOWS Vista I can safely remove the hard drive when using a Windows XP machine.

Thanks

Mark

Solve : Oem OS software is it worth it??

Answer»

I was PLANNING on my first build and to keep prices down I was going to GO the OEM route with the Vista Home PREMIUM. Does this sound LIKE a way to go? What if there is trouble on the system and I need to reload the operating system? Will it let me? I get the impression that you can USE the CD once and only once is that right? Some light on this subject would be greatly appreciated.I think you can if it's the same PC.

Also consider Linux if you want free

Solve : Internet very slow?

Answer»

I have installed XP SP3 on another computer and now I can't access the internet or my router page. I have tried IE and FF. It's connecting to the wireless network and packets are being shown travelling between the computer and the router but I can't access the internet/router page. I have installed an update KB951830 but that didn't help. Any ideas or go back to XP SP2 and be completely unsecure? You're not being much more secure by installing SP3. If you keep Windows updates current, you'll be fine without SP3.
For now, try to uninstall it, and see, if the connection is back.Use System Restore to restore to the state before the XP SP3 was installed.

start, All programs, accessories, system tools, system restore

( I have XP SP3 and have no slow down. Perhaps you went to the wrong site for the download? )

Be aware that XP SP3 will download automatically if you are set to receive MS updates automatically.Uninstalled SP3 and all works now with SP2, crappy Microsoft ftw.

EDIT: It seems I spoke too soon, my internet is back but still very slow.

The slow computer:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/432986452.png

My laptop: http://www.speedtest.net/result/432983693.png

Both wireless. Any ideas why this would be? I noticed I have 7 svchost.exe running under task manager is this normal?1) Use the the repair option on CD installation Disk

and/or

2) Run sfc /scannow

( sfc is a System File Checker. You will need to insert the CD installation disk when asked for. ) All bad system files will be replaced.

3) And ,of course, run your anti virus and anti-ad programs. Remove all temp files.
4) Clean your registry at the free Microsoft site. Only use the cleanup for no charge. ONECARE is a huge site but you will only use one page:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/cleanup.htm.

It's very possible, that installing, and uninstalling SP3 caused some network files to be messed up.
One general note: the most important thing before installing any SP, is to make sure first, the computer is running properly, is free of garbage, and free of any infection.
Let's try to fix internet issues....

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.Sadly the fixes didn't work, still very slow and my NOD32 keeps screwing up. "Personal Firewall is not working properly." Cheers for the help btw.

Few more things to try (one at a time):
1. Hardwire the computer straight to the modem, bypassing router.
2. See, if the internet is slow in Safe Mode with Networking.
3. Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Slow as well?I'm CONFUSED now. I moved the computer downstairs to plug it into the modem but thought I would test it down here first. I plugged it in, it picked up the wireless network and now its working fine. It's sitting right next to the router now and working better than normal.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/434047019.png

EDIT: Moved it back up stairs and still working fine:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/434061058.png

Only thing not working is my NOD32 firewall now. It says "Personal firewall rules could not be converted for an unknown reason."

EDIT: Reinstalled and NOD32 is fixed as well now. Cheers for all the help Broni.Talking about weird computer behaviors, huh?....LOL
Glad, all is cool

Solve : Interesting Video problem?

Answer»

Alright so I know this is most likely a hardware failure of some kind that is untreatable but I figured I would just confirm with you guys. Sorry its so long but I wanted to try and provide as much of the story as possible so you guys can understand whats going on. Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated ty.

Ok so recently my HP dv9000 laptop started gradually loosing video capabilities. The whole problem occured when my computer screen slowly started to show horizontal lines scattered all over the place. But I could still use my computer but after a few minutes the lines appeared everywhere and my computer locked up forcing me to restart. When I RESTARTED everything was fine again and I went to bed with the computer left on doing a disk defrag. The next morning I came back to my computer on w/ a black screen and everything was frozen. So I restart the computer and right before you see the login screen these lines appear again all over the place. Its hard to describe them but they usually cover most of the screen and are white / blue or red in color over black background. They occasionally will jump around and whatnot.

The weirdest part is that for most of that day I would turn the computer off and back on trying to fix / diagnose it and sometimes I would be able to get to the login screen and even into the operating system without the problem happening. But pretty much for that whole day the problem would occur on and off. Sometimes I would restart and get stuck with this garbled screen right before the login screen. Other times that may happen but then it would move past that and I could get into the operating system. But the lines would slowly appear again and then gradually the whole computer would freeze leaving me clueless as to whats going on. How could my video card be partially shot seeing as how I was getting video perfectly sometimes and not others? Why is it that system restore is not solving the issue? Why is it that reinstalling my nvida DRIVERS are not helping at all? Whats really really weird is that all of that stuff happened like a month ago. Suddenly the next day the problem was pretty much gone and for nearly a month I had no issues. But then suddenly just the other day... bam its back again. I think I should add that I have also been using a 24" HP LCD monitor which is what I was using when this problem started happening. And also when I was using the larger screen I would have my laptop closed and it would get pretty hot. I am thinking that perhaps somehow it GOT too hot or the external screen messed up my video card in some way.

Anyway so ok it gets better. So I also formatted my hard drive today and reinstalled windows vista home as a last resort and guess what as soon as I updated my video drivers to nvidia's I get the same problem only this time I can never get back to the login screen under those conditions. The only way I can get video now is to use the Standard Display Adapater in 1024X768 screen resolution. Under those conditions I have no problems. Everything else is working stellar too but as soon as I try to UPDATE my display drivers to nvidia's, after I restart i am welcomed to the same video problem I had so obiviously a fresh operating system isnt solving the problem leading me to believe its hardware related. What I dont get is when this problem first started I could sometimes get past the login screen and now I can never even see the login screen. I am always left stranded with the garbled lines apon startup before the login screen pops up.

So my question is this... at this point is there anyway I can tweak my computer to allow the nvidia drivers to work so I can at least get my screen resolution of 1440X990 back. I was going to turn down the hardware acceleration of the video card to see if that helps but I cant get back into the system with the nvida drivers in use to do that. I was also thinking about underclocking my computer to see if that will allow the video card to function using the real drivers. I donno I am so lost and I just dont want to believe my hardware is destroyed due to some simple stupid mistake like letting the unit get to hot. If anyone could please give me a few suggestions to try or confirm that my hardware is faulty I would greatly appreciate it ty for reading. To confirm if the hardware is faulty I would go into BIOS or boot to Linux disk and let it run for a while. If the screen doesn't mess up in BIOS or a Linux live CD you can narrow the problem down to windows or the hard drive.

You say it started after you installed the latest drivers. Try to roll back to the older driver and see if the problem persists. Just because it's the latest driver doesn't mean it's the best one.Hey HaveFaith163,
There is nothing wrong with your computer. It is dying a slow death. Which is very common with laptops.

What is really weird is how you refuse to accept the reality of your laptop's illness.

Overheating really does do permanent damage to silicon.

Really. Basic physics.

Go buy a new computer and pay extra for a three year warranty.

Solve : windows vista screen - how can I get back orignal screen??

Answer»

I just GOT a new computer, my HUSBAND changed my ORIGINAL Vista screen to the old xp one. How can I get my original screen back?In Vista RIGHT clik an empty space on the Desktop and select Personalise...then Themes...
Choose Vista default and re-boot.BTW he should set up his own personal User Profile so you both can have the best of both Worlds...Thank you, I will do that. By the way he has his own computer, we were just setting up my new one and he thought I wanted the other look. Husbands can be way tougher than Windows...Actually what I want is the toolbar that went across the top of my screen, not just the color changeNever mind, I just realized I had to re boot. Now I have it back to normal. Thanks for your help it was much appreciated. I am a 77 year old lady who loves her internet. You are more than Welcome...and Welcome to CH ! !
Feel free to STOP by anytime.
The reason i suggested a User profile is if he set up his own with how he likes it it will only make those changes when he logs in under his User account...your settings would remain intact and unchanged...

You may need to borrow or buy a PS2 keyboard...everyone should have one for emergencies like this.
Or you COULD check to see if Legacy USB devices are enabled in the BIOS.

Solve : Spinrite does not see 5.25 floppy drive?

Answer»

I'm trying to recover some old disks using Spinrite 6.0, but it is not included in the list of drives to be SCANNED. Both A and B drives are the correct settings in BIOS.

Does anyone know why B is not being recognized?

Any help is appreciated. Are you using a 3.5 and 5.25 combo DRIVE or separate drives? You are sure that they both work and that they are connected properly? You know that the floppy controller on the motherboard works? There is a good data cable, properly connected, and power cables properly connected? That the drives are jumpered properly in accordance with the cable type? The drive latch lever properly closed? Is there a disk in each drive?

You do know that in MS-DOS, if there is one floppy drive only, the B drive letter is an alternate drive letter so you can switch disks? That is, you put a disk in the drive, type DIR A: and you get a list of the files on the disk. If you then type DIR B: you get a prompt to take out the disk and put another one in. After that, you can refer to the 2 disks by the letters A: and B:

Information here about floppy drive configuration

http://www.pcmech.com/article/floppy-drive-configuration/

Is the bios setting right for the 5.25 drive size? (360/720 Kb)

additionally if it's the middle of the cable be sure to remove any terminating resistor block, if there is one.

Also most half-height 5 1/4 floppy drives have a group of jumpers labeled "DS1" through "DS3"... honestly I cannot say what these do, but the drive I have here is set to DS1, and I believe it was used as a B: drive recently.Try to just use 5.25 and unplug the 3.5 and it might work that is what i do on my vista and it works fine. Floppy controllers used to support up to 4 drives, DS0 to DS3. MODERN controllers tend to support 2 only, drive A: = DS0 and drive B: = DS1. Most drives are factory set to DS1, or Drive B: position. In order to use the drive as a drive A:, you use a floppy ribbon cable that tricks the computer into using the drive as A:. This is done with the use of a special twist in the cable. So drive A: must be located after the twist on the floppy ribbon cable. To use a non-standard floppy cable without a twist, the DS jumper on the A: drive needs to be set to DS0.

Modern 3.5 inch floppy drives don't have jumpers - they are FIXED as DS1 and you have to use a cable with a twist.

I am able to read and write to the 5.25 disks via Ataridsk, or at least to the disks I have formatted with this program, so the drive is recognized.

Spinrite only sees the A drive, however.

I will try unplugging the A drive and see what happens.

Thanks

What antivirus programs do you have installed on your computer?Yes, Check that out I GOT rid of my Norton anti-virus and my machineis WORKING a lot better. Like before I put the Norton on. I usually have @ 53 processes running, which seems to be normal.Im running NOD32 and SuperAnti spywareTry to delete superanti spyware and leave NOD 32 maybe this would help you with your problem. Sometimes putting 2 anti virus might cause a conflict and can slow down your computer.Try using avast and spybot they are free and usually get stuff that other programs don't It will probably find a bot on your computer or spyware try spybot first.

There is no conflict between NOD and SAS...they do different things. Avast is a antivirus and spybot gets rid of spyware They complement each other and do not do the same thing I have used this on over 20 computers and they never conflict.

Solve : Power Botton won't power up have to reset before it starts?

Answer»

I was booting up and the power went out about a week ago same time as I was booting up. Now to get my computer booted up I got to reset the switch on the power SUPPLY a few times before it finally starts up. I have a desktop tower with windows vista HOME premium. 32 bit. A Phoenix Bios. I've tried TAKING the BATTERY out of the motherboard to reset the bios but still same problem. Any help out there would be gratefully appreciated. I would borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnight...
If the condition goes away replace the PSU...
Do yourself a favor and don't buy a 25 dollar special.yes, sounds like power supply,

Solve : Absurd amount of programmes running????

Answer»

I have recently purged and resurrected the lives of 2 family computers running on XP - thanks to the gr8 advice received from this site.

My wifes BRAND spanking ACER laptop started playing up. So I gave it the deep clean/spy/mal ware treatment etc etc

When running hijackthis (log attached) it tells me I'm running in the region of 79 applications...

Is this normal? It strikes me alot of this is Acer cr*p and add ons that could sit at the back until called forward - but I'm a LITTLE wary of disabling some stuff on vista. It pains me to say that her new laptop is alot slower than our older machines....

The hijack log is attached...
The analysis log keeps TELLING me that a firewall is not running/latest service pace is not installed - ddespite the fcat that I have updated the sp and comode states it is all running well (however it does seem a little quiet when running inside vista?) Is this normal?

[attachment deleted by admin]give http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ a try. Worked great to clean out the crap from my laptop. You have 17 startups (in HJT they're O4 entries).
Some of them can be disabled:
- IgfxTray
- Persistence
- SunJavaUpdateSched
- SUPERAntiSpyware (don't disable, if you have paid version)
- WindowsWelcomeCenter
Simply re-run HJT, checkmark the above entries, and click "Fix checked" button.

Also, I assume, you run Comodo firewall only, not AV and firewall?mine has tons of crap too

Well, there's no sense in keeping all the stuff put on a new computer by manufacturers (PROGRAMS, desktop shortcuts, etc.) that you know you don't need. And, since this unneeded stuff may include some programs that run in the background, those could be degrading performance.

There are VARIOUS File Folders and Text DOCUMENTS pertaining to the game listed in Program Files - do I get RID of them by simply R clicking and "Delete"?

I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP2.

Advice appreciated.reboot. If the folders are still there then yes, just delete them. Thanks, ADG -

Solve : Internet Connection problem..?

Answer»

Good day CH people, i just would like to ask for help regarding with our internet connection. I am using windows vista and i don't KNOW but later on my computer is disconnecting from the internet what i mean is the Connection icon on the task bar is turning from a blue sphere to a yellow EXCLAMATION point icon with it even though the modem says the opposite with it because the modem is still connected. Before i have to restart my modem, wait for 10 seconds, turn it on again and wait for the connection to be done to have again the connection but later on i realized i just have to unplug the ethernet cord/cable from the modem and plug it again. We don't have any problem like this before, i just forgot when it started. Almost every 1-2 hours the connection is disconnected even though our modem is connected. I think there is problem with the computer software? Well i find this problem unusual that's why i'm bringing up this thread on this forum. I hope anyone can help me about this. THANKS a LOT Restart your computer and tap the F8 key until you come to the Advanced Options menu. Select "Safe Mode with Networking"... Once it boots, open a web page, or browse the Internet for a few hours... If all works out alright with no interruptions, then we can likely attribute the problem to either software or virus infection and we'll take the necessary steps to deal with it..

If it doesn't work while in Safe Mode with Networking, then we'll check some other things.. oh okay thanks.. does it have to do with my drive C:? cause it's capacity is 90 Gig and only 4 gig left and it turned out colored red no
that would only case problems if you have less tehn 25 mb left

Solve : Can't get out of Diagnostic Mode - Acer Aspire 5315-2153?

Answer»

I have VISTA 32. Last night I opened up my computer and everything came up ok, but I couldn't connect with the internet. After a few attempts to re-connect I gave up and shut the computer. I think I may have still been in the area where you look for wireless connections. The next time I opened up my computer it was in some sort of diagnostic mode and I can't seem to get it out. I have a screen come up that says choose a LANGUAGE and then when I select US and "next" it takes me to the System Recovery Options screen. I select Startup Repair and only get a message saying "Startup Repair could not detect a problem." I've tried the System Restore, but can't get anywhere with that option because it says I have not set up a restore POINT. And unfortunately I didn't create a back-up "restore" DVD when I had the chance, so that option is not available either.

I went to the MSDOS command prompt and it appears to have the default DRIVE set as "X". I ran the "dir" command and see I still have over 700 files in the "X" drive and also a number of files in the "C" drive. I'm not able to switch over to the "C" drive to try to give a command to get back to Windows thru MSDos.

Is there a shortcut or hotkey or something that I can do to get back into Windows? I'm just about beating my head against the WALL. I know my stuff is still there I just can't get out of diagnostic mode.

Any wisdom anyone has to offer on this would be greatly appreciated. when its booting up watch very carefully and post any prompts of messages hereWhen it's first coming on the Acer icon comes up with the blue screen and down in the bottom left corner it says "Press to go to Setup". It only flashes for a moment then it's replaced by the message "Prepare Boot to OS".are you saying it goes in diagnostic mode does its thing
then reboots and goes to diagnostic mode?Once you see the message saying "Prepare Boot to OS" it appears to be opening Windows, but it goes directly into diagnostic mode. The only option is to re-start or try one of the repair options. I've tried every option but it seems to be stuck in diagnostic mode.

Solve : Norton with Vista?

Answer»

No NEED to get up....just sit corrected... Look, there's no question but that NAV is not what it used to be. Once Peter Norton sold to Symantec and eventually retired they tried to do too much with the PRODUCT, MAKING an unnecessary "suite" out of what was previously a fine, lean AV utility. Still, as a system protector it does it's JOB EFFECTIVELY. Perhaps not as efficiently as others, but just as effectively.Quote from: patio on August 25, 2009, 06:13:35 AM

Solve : computer goes to sleep mode at startup?

Answer»

I have a COMPAQ presario v6000 laptop with vista that will startup windows for about 2 seconds and then apparently goes to sleep mode.(blank screen lights all on no noise from drives) When I shut it down using the power button and restart, it goes to the screen where you can choose safe mode etc. When it is run in safe mode it works fine.I dont have any discs for it and this machine was never backed up internally. Im not sure what direction to go with this any help would be appreciated.Under your screen hinges you will see a little pointy button that sticks up. Is this bent or deformed in any way and is it all the way out?

Also when in safe mode you need to go into power saving options in control panel and turn off sleep mode for everything.I have changed all the sleep options in the power section and nothing changed. I could not find a screen button even though I looked CAREFULLY with a flashlight.I'm thinking this computer has a different type of switch? If the screen switch were the problem would it also be affected in safe mode? How can I GET a disc to reformat my hardrive, I suspect this may cure the problemIs there any chance this is still under warranty?Quote from: leedrfam on August 23, 2009, 08:28:26 PM

I can't see this needing that extreme a solution. I would just REINSTALL the video card driver and double check that your power option choices 'took'.

If you have no copies of your disks then you should phone Compaq, they will send them to you.It seems that my power options did take. How do I reinstall the video driver
Is this something I can get from the web or do I need to get some discs?

I found the hp site and downloaded the bios and the vid drivers but unfortunately cannot install them in safe mode which is the only way the computer will run. This laptop is not under warranty by the way. I'm going to check on getting some discs but I'm not sure if I can because this computer did not come with any.Why would the drivers not install in safemode ? ?
Any error messages ?When I try to load the bios in safe mode I get a box that says windows install shield cannot operate in safe mode, and that's as far as it gets

Solve : Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool?

Answer»

Every time I turn on my new Dell Inspiron Laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate, it beeps urgently and then displays a screen asking whether I wish to start Windows normally or run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool. If I choose start windows normally, the laptop starts and runs as it should. If I run the diagnostics tool, it runs - the computer restarts and a pop up comes up and says that the tool found no issues, then the computer runs as it should. The question is, why does this diagnostic tool wish to run upon every start-up and can this be avoided? If the machine is less than a YEAR old i would exercise the warranty...There's gotta be an explanation. Has nobody ever had this happen? No work around? Anything besides returning the machine?Quote from: touch2much on August 21, 2009, 04:18:19 PM

There's gotta be an explanation. Has nobody ever had this happen? No work around? Anything besides returning the machine?

If it's under warranty why on earth would you want a work around?

You paid for the warranty, use it and have your machine working right.I'd rather not be without the machine for two weeks if there is a click or two I COULD perform in order to solve the problem. Again, the machine works fine after I check "start windows normally".Yes, but if the issue is hardware then fix it now. Then it can't cascade on you when the warranty runs out. So,have we determined that this is a hardware issue? No, far from it. I can UNDERSTAND your reluctance to be away from your laptop, that is also my computer of choice.

It does sound LIKE something is wrong though. Have you phoned the manufacturer to troubleshoot it though? No, haven't tried their tech support yet. It's really more of an annoyance than a real problem. The laptop works fine otherwise. Guess I'll make the PHONE call, though. You're right, I did pay for that support so I might as well make use of it.Let us know what they say and how it turns out.

Your best bet is to

A) Keep spending your money and replacing parts until it works.
B) Take it to a local shop and get them to make it work.

Both are expensive, but it's your call.

When there is lightning unplug your machine from anything that it's connected to.I had a very similar issue today with mine. Can anyone SPOT what may need changing on my desktop?

Simple problem. There's a file that, even with the Admin account, is inaccessible. I know there are two ways to delete these kind of files (because I did search for this problem before I asked for help):
1. Reset the ownership. Problem - I can't even change the ownership. Even for that I require Admin control. In any case, the ownership line reads something like, "Cannot identify the owner."
2. Delete file at boot (which I used another program for). Unsuccessful. Twice. And I've seen this program work before, and it has never failed me until now.

The file is a .exe file, it was meant to be a standalone App that I could put on a USB but it got stuck on the Docs folder because of the access denied thing. It is NOT a virus, as I've scanned it.

I just need to deleeete it. REAALLY. BECAUSE IT IS REALLY, REALLY ANNOYING..

Thanks in advance.Weird. Try deleting it with http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker /. I usually get good results if a file is being stubborn. Not even that unlocker has access to the file. LoL. Irony, especially when its job is to delete files without access.Apparently, nothing has access to the file at all. It just says, "Windows cannot access the specified... You may not have the appropriate permissions to..." So my attempt at deleting it at boot didn't work because I can't schedule it to do so (the scheduler program didn't have permission, and neither did the unlocker).

When I first got the .exe into My Documents, I went to its Properties and I found a button that said, "Unlock", which I clicked. Does that have anything to do with it?Man, I'm having the same stinkin' problem too! Who the H#!! does Bill Gates think he is? I pay gobs of $$$, but can't run my software how I want to. Can't someone figure this out?Try Killbox: http://killbox.net/Ran into this really weird problem. According to KillBox, the file doesn't even exist. Lol.OK, let's go back.
How do you know, the file is there? How can you see it? What is the path to it? What is the file name?I physically see it with Windows Explorer and another explorer (Explorer ++) I downloaded to make sure this wasn't a digital illusion. It is CLICKABLE file that doesn't disappear when I reboot or refresh. The file name is fwb.exe, the path to it is via ...\My Documents.

And, uh, I'm medically fine in the head. Lol.open a command prompt
and type chkdsk /f
give it a while
and try againThat file doesn't seem to be good news: http://www.prevx.com/filenames/2111875671132779485-X1/FWB.EXE.html
Quote

The Process is polymorphic and can change its structure
Can it be uploaded here: http://www.virustotal.com/ for security check?

Where did you get it from anyway?Lol - I changed the name to FWB.exe from something I downloaded from CNET (it's a no-install web browser). After the name change, I saw the "Unlock" thing in the properties, and that's when all the trouble started. FWB.exe isn't the original name - sorry for the mislead. In any case, I can't upload it, cause moving it STILL triggers the, "You can't touch me," thing.

The error checking didn't work, BTW. WAAAAAH!!!

Oh, and out of curiosity, can someone show me how to set the default program for .lnk files from ContextMenu to Unknown Application?for both problems i would say system restore before both of them startedSee, if this: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?/topic/13157-easy-way-to-take-ownership-of-system-files-in-vista/ will ALLOW you to take the ownership of the file.

Did you try to delete the file from Command Prompt (in Safe Mode, if necessary)?System restore doesn't deal with non-system files.

Solve : Shortcuts stop responding...?

Answer» HI there:

I realize the good thing to do would be to post the computer specs, but I've decided not to, because I am 99.99% sure this is not a hardware or a software problem (except for the two I will mention LATER).

Now, quite a few months ago I installed Adobe Acrobat onto my Vista Home Premium and, as expected, a shortcut popped up in the Start Menu. Naturally I used this shortcut to access Acrobat - that is to say, I don't click all the way to Program Files just to access Acrobat.

Suddenly, after installing some perfectly legit softwares (PERFECT Disk 10, Uniblue), the shortcut stops working. As in, when I click on the shortcut, the computer doesn't respond. The program's processes don't even OPEN. I used Uniblue's Computer Optimizer, though, but I seriously doubt there are compatability issues between two widely used softwares.

So far, I realized that the shortcuts whose "TARGET" area I can't modify, whose "Target" area is completely nonspecific and only says the name of the program, so,

Instead of,
"...\Microsoft Office\...Blah...\word.exe",

It would say,
"Microsoft Word"

Incidentally, none of the Microsoft products work.

Help? Maybe?

BTW, shortcuts that ARE specific, like references directly to Fallout3.exe instead of the program, Fallout 3, do still work.

Though the shortcuts may not work, the respective programs still do open but only when the .exe is selected directly or through a user created shortcut.

Thanks in advance. You might try uninstalling the two programs. Specifically, try uninstalling the Uniblue offering, and see how the computer acts once you do that.

Coincidence is not impossible, of course, but the fact that the computer started responding differently once these two applications were installed makes me think at least one of them is at fault.

Many people on the forum do not hold "optimization" software in high regard. They will tell you that it can often cause more problems than it solves.

Since I have no direct experience with either application, you are welcome to see what other responses you receive before you take an action.

I'm no computer expert, and my computer knowledge is just basically offhand and unprofessional, but I would dare to suggest (naively) that, given the nature of the problem (and how it affects all nonspecific shortcuts, whether installed after or before either of the two problems), the problem itself is a process or a service (or a lack thereof).

So, though I will follow Aegis' advice and uninstall the software (and first undo the setting changes I have made), I think there's a service that helps the computer relate the program name to the .exe location.

With no disrespect to the real experts . After all, I don't argue with my doctor.i never trust Uniblue
uninstall asap your problem may go away by itselfNope, didn't work. click the start button
click default programs
click accosiate a filetype or protical with a program button
it may take some time
without changing any setting
scroll the box
and look for an entry that starts with .lnk
now on the far right side of that entry it should say unknown application
if it doesnt post back what it saysIt says "ContextMenu". Oops. Should I change it? How do I change it?does it say
.lnk Shortcut ContextMenu?
if thats the case do you have a recent registrey backup?
if not and you have a restore point soon before this started
try system restore (usuly i dont sugjest it but it sounds like a registrey problem)Uhh... no backup or restores. I made the dumb mistake of cleaning out the computer after the problem.I've set the association back to Unknown App for .lnk but the things still don't work. Meeehhhh.

Solve : Where are the windows installation files?

Answer»

Hello

I have a toshiba SATELLITE L300-1BV laptop- with windows vista home premium

The operating system was pre-installed when i bought it, so i do not have any ORIGINAL installation/setup CDs

I only have the HDD recovery CD which i made..

So my question is where or how do i get to know the "path" to the windows installation files, so far my searching has come up with nothing, so i take it that they are not on the system.

So if they are not on the system do i have to get the original installation/setup CD
there aren't any... most manufacturers simply plop the recovery partition and a tool for creating recovery discs and call it a day.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellote L300 as well... but I wiped everything and started from scratch with a triple-boot system (XP,XP64, and Vista ultimate)Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 22, 2009, 01:09:17 PM

OK thanks for that BC_programmer.

I don't suppose you would no anything about this but, i was trying to create a BartPE cd, but this wants the windows installation files.
Would i have the same problem creating a WinPE based CD.

I just wanted to create one of these CDs to add the Acronis true image plugin for the bartPE or either the WinPE, but i am not having much luck if they want the path to the windows installation files. If you contact Toshiba they can arrange for the actuall OS disk for you, usually with minnimal fuss.Quote from: Quantos on August 22, 2009, 02:30:16 PM

Yes i was aware of that, i have been told they normally charge you for this request, but i don't know how much
I will get onto there website and start finding out, as i could do with one anyway..... The manufacturers ALWAYS purport to charge for that. I've seen anyone charged for it personally.

I know it didn't; that's why I wrote what I did. In BRITAIN, a "redbrick" university is a certain type: founded in the 19th or 20th century, (therefore snobbishly regarded as "NEW" by Oxford and Cambridge); had the image of being for poorer people. When I attended QMC I received a non-repayable Government grant which covered my tuition and housing. This was because my parent's income was below a certain level.
By the way, my father's real name was Phil Farmer.

This CONFUSION has plagued the Trout family for decades. A certain Mr Vonnegut wrote a book featuring an imaginary science fiction writer called Kilgore Trout. Later, Philip José Farmer wrote "Venus On The Half Shell" under that name. I am actually named after a British railway locomotive, an A3 Pacific type, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley.

When it occurs to me I search for it and it isn't there.
Further searching shows me that it is no longer on my computer anywhere.

Where do they go?
How are they selected?
Who selects them?

Any information appreciated.

Are you saying their listings are no longer in the Start menu ? ?
If so at the bottom there will be a small down arrow that will expand the view...perhaps this is what you're missing...

P.S. Vista re-orders apps according to most recently used so this may be what your seeing...

Solve : 32 bit OS v. 64 bit OS?

Answer»

32 bit has been AROUND for so long and has worked so well
now they want to change it?
what happened to if it ain't broke dont fix it?
and this will happen again when we go to 128 bit and
will lose compatibility for 32bit programs8 bit was around for a long time to (1982-1987, when the 386 was released) and it worked fine, why did those bastards at intel go and make that 80386 processor, with it's protected mode, and it's 32-bit bus width?

32-bit went from 1987 to.. hmm, well I'd say around the release of the Itanium, so around 2001, I believe. A tab longer, but not by much.

Here's a news flash. Technology changes.

Why did we bother using computers in the first place? I mean, they could have easily done broken the enigma code with pen and paper. I mean, bah, what's a few years here or there? 2 years, as is often cited, being how much faster the war was ended by the ability of "The Collosus" to help break the enigma code. I suppose instead they were supposed to lie around trying to break ciphers by hand with pen and paper, have pillowfights and dance the jitterbug.1982-1987 was all 16bit not 8 bit
it has an 8 bus but ran 16 bbit codehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_8086
hmm, somebody needs to get the facts straight. the 8086 and the 8088 were BOTH 8-bit CPUs. the 8086 had a 16-bit data bus instead of the 8-bit bus possessed by the 8088.

two address lines were GRAFTED on (essentially) allowing it to access 1024KB of RAM, considered gobs of RAM (and priced accordingly at the time).

That being said however it was the 286, not the 386 that made the jump to a HIGHER bit width instruction-wise. It also had the bound instruction, and protected mode from which you couldn't escape! yay!

Why the heck are you proving yourself wrong

the original IBM PC used a 8088 processor. the 8086 was used in the IBM XT (IIRC), and regardless of that fact, it was the data bus that was 16-bit, not the processor itself. it could only process a byte at a time.

but it ran msdos a 16bit OS
explain that
it ran 16bit os with 16bit programs
but you said its only 8 bits-how?Quote

Solve : 64 bit computer compatability with 32 bit software?

Answer»

Is the short answer, they're not going to get along?
I bought a new 64 bit 1.8GHZ 4G RAM Gateway w/ Vista Home Ultimate w/ SP1. I tried to DOWNLOAD my old PC's stored files from a 2007(!) Maxtor One-Touch lll external drive. The PC prompted for a compatible driver for the Maxtor. The Vista load didn't have a suitable driver and Maxtor (now Seagate) has at least two 32 bit drivers online, but no 64 bit & has no plans to make one! I've just bought "an Apple" and didn't know it? Trying to run 32 bit software (particularly with Vista!) on a 64 bit PC either won't work or is just dicey? I'm either buying a new external drive & taking my chances that all my other 32 bit sw will get along with my PC, or exchanging for a 32 bit PC? My MS Office load I need to install is 32 bit. Does "Seagate" metaphorically represent a neo-Pirate's cove where your money goes in and their ill-supported stuff comes out? Or, I should walk the plank for my poor purchase(s) that weren't going to get along to begin with? Please. Thanks.

A HDD should not need or require drivers to run properly on a 64bit system...
As far as software issues i have been running Vista Ultimate 64bit for a year and have only ran into 2 apps that would not run properly on it...with a chisel and sledgehammer i was able to get them to run...but keep in mind both of these were A)Diagnostic apps and B) written back in the Win98 days.

So either something has changed with the Maxtor HDD or there are details left out here...Last call for ideas on making a Maxtor One-Touch lll external drive 32bit get along with 64bit Vista Home Premium. Maxtor software installs, but no driver on the CD that Vista thinks is compatible. No driver compatible per the Windows Vista Compatibility site- just red X's. Maxtor(Seagate) site driver downloads are all 32bit & tech I reached in cust serv says no 64bit driver coming.

Thanks for any further ideas. Don't use the driver. I have multiple machines with 32 bit, and one with 64, I've never had an issue - except for once the drive itself failed. You don't need a driver to access it.I'm very accustomed to NEEDING a driver, preferrably latest. But, apparently greater collective experience says give it a go. I will & thank you for the tip. NONE of my external Drives need a driver for anything past Windows ME.

the drivers are likely intended for windows 9x to begin with.

you do not need a driver
but 64bit windows doesnt run 16bit apps

Is there any way to restore all my stuff? Maybe, if you tell us what the EXACT message is.I really can't remember, I didn't take a good look at it (stupid, I know), and the message does not reappear.Well, if the message is gone, there is nothing to worry about, isn't it?I have the same problem. Logged onto ONE of my PCs yesterday and the user account was completely reset to all the defaults. At first I couldn't find my files either but eventually I found them (I think all of them but not sure).

How in the heck did it reset itself? It wasn't even connected to anything as I have to change all the peripherals when I switch PCs.

I've thought it might be having a problem lately as my problem PC doesn't recognize any USB storage devices (tried 2 portable hard drives and MULTIPLE flash).

Solve : Stuttering/screen flicker?

Answer»

I have a Dell XPS One. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, E6550 @ 2.33 GHz. 2.0 GB, 32 bit Operating System. I bought it just a little over a year ago. worked fine for SEVERAL months and then stored for about 3 months. When I plugged it BACK in and started using it again, I started having problems with FLICKERING/stuttering. I don't know what else to CALL it. I can usually use the computer for a few minutes before it starts. It doesn't matter if I don't have anything open or not. If it starts when I'm on the internet, it's usually the URL box that starts flickering and I can't go to other pages. If I'm playing one of the games, like mahjongg, that came with the computer, I can continue playing, but the tiles will flicker. If I click on the start button, the start menu will flash up and then disappear. At first, all I could think of was to manually turn the computer off and then when I'd turn it back on, it was ok again for a few minutes. I have had some trouble getting internet screens to close when it's started to flicker, so I did the Ctrl, alt delete thing and ended my Internet Explorer with the End Task button. But now I've found that I can just do the control alt delete and hit cancel on the blue screen and then it'll work fine again for awhile. There isn't any specific length of time that it will work. It varies. Could be 5 minutes, could be an hour. Norton says I don't have any viruses or worms or anything. Any insights?
Thanks,

Solve : Problem installing Vista?

Answer»

Hello Forum Members,

I'm working on a computer, and there is a bit of a pickle I just can not get around with it.
When you put a Vista Installation CD, or when you run the "Repair Your Computer" feature of Windows (on the Advanced Startup Menu F8) it does its INITIAL loading, and then it just freezes up.

I know what causes the installer to freeze up, and it is not common:
The bootloader of the computer (or, the filesystem in general) was corrupt somehow. When the installer loads, it looks for the bootloader so it can see the drive partitions and find out about the current installation of Windows. This causes the installer to freeze up, as well as the "Repair Your Computer" utility.
I can verify/prove that it is an issue with the contents of the hard drive in some way by removing the drive and running the installation CD again (loads fine after drive removal).

I had this happen on my very own laptop as well. Unfortunately, I had to delete everything on the drive before I could get it working. In this case, I can not do that.

The computer reports BSOD Message: Unmountable_Boot_Volume
(I can get the numbers if needed)
Disabled Restart on System Failure.
Tried "Last Known Good Configuration"
I can not access the Windows Recovery Console without the Installation CD Working fine.

Thank you in advanced,
Jesse Zylstra

PS: Sorry for being so wordy and writing way too much for such a question. I have a bad habit of doing that.

FACT: I spelled “Installation” wrong five times in the original copy of this post. if you have a spare hard drive, you could try installing to that (with the current drive disconnected)- or slave the drive and copy any data off it and then clean it off to install Vista. This is quoted right out of a BOOK I have..maybe it can be of some help:

STOP: 0x000000ED (this hex code may be different than yours)

Unmountable_Boot_Volume

This stop error occurs when the input/output subsystem fails to mount the BOOT volume. This can be due to a damaged file system, but in certain instances can also be caused by a conflict between the disk controller and the hard drive cable.

If the system uses an Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) PATA (ATA/IDE) controller, and the hard drive is plugged in with a standard 40-wire cable rather than the necessary 80-wire UDMA cable, the end result can be the 0x000000ED Unmountable_Boot_Volume error.

However, if the first parameter to appear in parentheses at the top of the STOP 0x0000032, the problem is being caused by a damaged file system. Try using the CHKDSK /R command from Recovery Console: if this doesn't solve the problem, try using the FIXBOOT command. Its 0x0ED, yes.
(Actually a book of BSOD would be nice to have...)
The hard drive is -- oh, what's the new technology now?
SATA! But, it has an adapter from SATA back to whatever a laptops version of IDE is ATA

The second part of the BSOD message is 0x863C3520
(Now, when I googled that, I got nothing, perhaps I did something wrong...)
then:
0xC0000185
0x00000000 , 0x00000000

BC_Programmer:
Unfortunately, I don't have a spare drive large enough for installing Windows on.
I will have to see tomorrow if the adapter for the drive that is inside the computer can attach to my ATA external drive case.
(It is "ATA", right? Usually ATA 16 or 32, or some other bit increment)ATA is what in common parlance is called "IDE" when in fact IDE refers to the drives themselves and how their controllers are integrated onto the device.

there is ATA-33, ATA-66, ATA-100 and ATA-133 (called, "ultra-ATA"), if memory serves ATA-33 and 66 used a 40-wire cable- the newer two use a 80-wire conductor cable where every second pin was a ground wire used to prevent crosstalk at the higher speeds.

ATA is more or less referencing the control codes sent back and forth from the host to the controller on each device. SATA is the same in that respect, the "language" is the same, but the wire is smaller and it communicates using a high-speed serial connection rather then the parallel cables ATA had been using. The idea behind this was that a One-bit WIDE lane (serial) can be scaled to much higher speeds then a parallel design since the parallel design suffers from "bit lag" (the data doesn't always arrive at the same time) and Crosstalk between the conductors.

(heh, for the record, laptops use IDE hard drives that combine the power and data ribbon connector into one connector)

Anyway... is the hard drive itself SATA or IDE? I feel the adapter may be playing a role in this.Looked like this:

Original Source; http://www.laptopworkshop.com/shop/images/sata_laptop_drive.jpg

And, it has an adapter to go to whatever the other cable type is.
All laptops in this series would have this setup, since it was not a customized installation.

Solve : Computer will not start up Windows?

Answer»

I recently INSTALLED Nortons 360 on my home computer. I received a notice that I had a upgrade to Nortons 2009 which I received. When the program removed my old Nortons and RESTARTED my computer I received a message that Windows could not start because PART was missing. After much trial and error I finally got the computer up using my start up CD. Each time I CONTACTED Nortons and they tried to work the issue a reboot of the system yielded the same message as before. Now my system will not RESTART even using the start up CD. I now get the message "Window could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows, restart the computer and reinstall." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I have not tried a total restart from the CD since there is material that I would rather not loose.

Hello, I'm NEW to these forums... so hope this is at least close to the right PLACE to post this. Anyway, I was wondering if it's possible (and if so how) to transfer a GAME from a windows vista computer to a computer using windows vista (basic). Specifically I want to transfer Chess Titans which comes with the premium/ regular version and not the basic.

Thanks.

Solve : Cannot remove uninstalled game desktop icon?

Answer»

I have just uninstalled a PC cd-rom game - that seems to be all ok. I now have the game's desktop icon remaining and I can't get rid of it. When r-clicking I take the USUAL delete and remove to Recycle Bin option. but then get the following: "Could not FIND this item. This is no longer located in C:\Users\Public\Desktop. Verify the item's location and try again".

What do I do now? Suggestions appreciated.

I have Vista Home Premium SP2

Right click on it, click Properies. What does it say under Target?Broni - your REPLY came as I was making a further post, quote:

After making my post and and turning off, it occurred to me that rebooting might make a difference. It did - the unwanted icon was gone, although I don't know why that procedure should make the difference.

Seems to be ok now - thanks for your interest.Cool Quote from: silkie on August 16, 2009, 01:22:23 PM

Just for future REF Silkie you can also try right clicking on a blank BIT of screen and clicking refresh. Saves having to do the restart if it ever happens again

Solve : Vista Task Scheduler error "Task Compatibility module failed to update task"?

Answer»

HI,
I posted in the DOS forum about my efforts to use Robocopy to make backups:

5 Microsoft / Microsoft DOS / Variables with embedded blanks on: August 09, 2009, 01:16:02 PM

That batch file is working if I launch it.

It fails if I launch it with Task Scheduler.
The event log gives this error:
"Task Compatibility module failed to update task
User_Feed_Synchronization-(90573B48-7F1A-49EB-B0E2-630E54FB2F9A).job" to the required status 0.
Additional data error value 2147943732.

Information that I found on this error is here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd315694%28WS.10%29.aspx
Option 1 schtasks.exe didn't fix it.
Option 2 "Configure for box" only allows WINDOWS Vista or Windows Server 2008 (one Choice)
Option 3 Use Task Scheduler to import a Task Scheduler 1.0 task from an XML file.
I didn't understand this!

Does anyone hav an idea for me?
Thanks
Frank C
Task Scheduler Actions tab > Edit Actions > Program/Script entry must not be surrounded with quotes It is if you use the Browse button to FIND your file to be executed.
Mine looked like this:

"C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\System Tools\CopyTask.bat"

I renamed System Tools to System-Tools. I REMOVED the quotes. Now it looks like this

C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\System-Tools\CopyTask.bat

and it works!

I am now trying to get the wake-up user logged on or not combination to work
Frank CI had one more problem getting Robocopy to work under Task Scheduler.
Since my backup drive is a shared network drive the destination was not found. I got this error:

2009/08/15 20:20:00 ERROR 3 (0x00000003) Creating Destination Directory S:\Shared-Music\BackUp-Test\
The system cannot find the path specified.

I learned that using the UNC addressing scheme could circumvent ACCESSING a mapped network drive problem. I used the CMD prompt and the NET USE cmd to get the FORMAT. I changed My Robocopy cmd from :

Robocopy C:\Users\Owner\Music\recordings\BackUp-Test\ S:\Shared-Music\BackUp-Test\ /Log:TaskSchBkupLog.txt

To:

Robocopy C:\Users\Owner\Music\recordings\BackUp-Test\ \\externaldrive\public\Shared-Music\BackUp-Test\ /Log:TaskSchBkupLog.txt

This is working! I hope that my experience may help others.

im away at college so i cant ask my dad for help and the computer techs arent open till later on this month...

if you guys have any ideas what i could do to try to fix this problem let me kno

thanks
Your problem sounds a lot LIKE what happened to me last winter. The short answer is to contact the computer manufacturer’s support web site and ask for help. If your computer came pre-installed with Vista then Microsoft probably won’t help unless you pay them. What brand is your computer? Go to their web site, look for tech support and see if you can file a help request. You will need the model and serial number and detailed problem description. They should give you advice by email.

My computer is a Hewlett-Packard. HP gave me 3 things to try.
1.System Restore
a.This is part of Vista and restores a backup copy of the registry to fix problems.
2.Startup Repair
a.This is a tool provided on Vista’s retail installation DVD, and might or might not be included on your hard drive or recovery DVD, if you have one.
3.System Recovery
a.This is the most drastic repair and will erase all your documents and settings.

Look at this web page for instructions on the first two options plus a forth option that might apply to your problem, although you would need a geek friend to help edit the computer registry. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358
Here is one about Startup Repair … http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/5c59f8c1-b0d1-4f1a-af55-74f3922f3f351033.mspx#EU

System Restore is the quickest and easiest to try:
Turn on the machine and immediately start pressing the F8 key [once or twice PER second] until the Options Menu APPEARS, [black screen, white letters]. Your mouse won’t work on that page so use the up & down arrows to highlight ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ and press the enter button. Lots of white text will scroll by, but eventually a desktop will appear and you can do this:

* Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
(or)
*Press the WinKey on the keyboard, type Restore then press enter.

Then follow the Restore Wizard’s instructions to restore to a date before the problem update occurred. The computer will stop and, hopefully, restart successfully. It didn’t work for me, but it might for you. If not, follow the computer tech support people’s advice. If they say you need a recovery disk and you don’t have one you should be able to order one from them and follow their instructions.

If nothing works, remember it is possible to physically remove the hard drive, connect it to another computer and at least save your data. Consider doing that before resorting to System Recovery.
Let us know how it goes.

[Microsoft’s help site is at http://support.microsoft.com/.]

Is there any news on this?

Solve : Vista MSI Recovery Setup.?

Answer»

I want to restore my computer back to new, without unistalling Vista...just cleaning the memory...When i insert my RECOVERY CD i can only chose Fail-safe recovery, and when i've clicked that i get the following MESSEGE: This action will restore your computer back to original NB manufacturer's settings. All files and setting will be lost. Are you sure to continue?
Now my question is, what will happen if i do this? The thing is i do not understand what is the meaning of MSI and NB...Pls help
Thanks This means all your data and any programs you have INSTALLED since you bought the machine will be gone...
It basically takes the machine back to Day One status. So i still have my operativ system or will it delete that too?It will replace it with a new install...Ok, thanks It will, however, remove any of your saved files and documents, you may want to back those up.As illustrated above....Yes, I noticed it was POSTED, I just forgot to hit the 'Quote' button for citation.

I just WANTED the OP to be aware.
