It ALSO talks about restarting and RUNNING scandisk.

Another time it said:

Solve : laptop net connection and restart problem (sony vaio w/vista)?

Answer»

the computer is a Sony Vaio and operates on windows Vista.

we use satt internet with a wireless router. The computer has been updated on virus issues and will connect to the net fine most of the time. but after being idol for a while the net will LOOSE connection yet the wireless card is pickiing up router and there is no issues with the actual satt connection. Normally I have to restart the computer and the connection comes back with no problems. Though alot of the times the laptop will not fully restart. It goes to a screen saying "computer restarting" and will just sit there and never restart.. I have to turn the power off and back on. Then the operating system comes to the black screen and ASKS if i want to start in normal mode or safe mode. I click normal mode and it starts back up fine until the net locks up again.. It usually RUNS fine as long as i dont sit idle long enough for the screen saver to come up. Any help on the issue is would be appreciated.

Solve : Computer gaming, odd lag problems. Help please!?

Answer»

My computer spec is:
Intel quad core @2.40 GHz,
4gb Ram,
NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT 2gb.

I am with wanadoo/orange BROADBAND using a 802.11 USB 2.0 adaptor (Inventel), i dont know if that MEANS anything to anyone.

PROBLEM: The wireless internet connection runs smoothly with no PROBLEMS whilst browsing websites and downloading files, however whilst playing an online game (for example: counterstrike source) my internet suffers from sudden 'bursts of lag' roughly once every 60 seconds. These lag bursts cause the game to freeze momentarily (roughly 2 seconds, never more, never less). Apart from these lag bursts online GAMES run very smoothly with no problems whatsoever.

any help appreciated, thanks!

JoeTemporarily disable your A/V apps...
Shut down any unneccessary running apps in the Tray.

See if things improve.I just tried and still no luck

My old computer I had inventel/wanadoo software installed and was ok, maybe the drivers for the adaptor isnt installed?!
I would install the wanadoo software however I seem to be having a problem on Vista.

Thanks. Joe.

Solve : Vista 64-bit Windows Media Player Problems?

Answer»

I recently build my own COMPUTER using windows vista-64 bit and everything works great! However I went out and bought a new DVD/CD burner so I could make DVDs and audio CDs using windows Media player and windows media center. Currently when I use iTunes, I am able to make audio CD's but when i try to use the windows software, i GET an error saying Media Player could not write the file to the disc. I've already tried different brands of CDs, and changing the writing speed of the drive itself but all with no luck. I want to believe its just a defective drive but on the other hand it can burn data CD's and audio ones using iTunes just FINE so does anybody know what the problem could be?

System Details:

Windows Vista 64-bit OS
Intel CORE 2 Duo 3.0 GHz
Western Digital 750 GB HDD
HIS RADEON HD 4670 (512 MB GDDR3 Memory)
HP dvd1140 DVD-RAM/CD-ROM drive (with litescribe)
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Motheboard
OCZ Platinum RAM (2x2GB)
Windows Defender (Spyware)
AVG Free Antivirus

I would appreciate any help. . . DLoad and try CDBurnerXPro...FREE
If it works then it's a WMP issue...if it doesn't i suspect the DVD laser in the burner is shot.

Solve : computer is rebooting at login screen?

Answer»

when i boot my computer and it gets to the login SCREEN it reboots. i tried using safe MOOD but it does the same. i replaced the harddrive but i think the guy who put in new parts for me installed a new motherboard he tried to update the bios and the driver failed but i dont think he noticed. does anyone know how i can wipe the bios? The BIOS is not the issue...
You need to find out what the sam heck this yahoo did to your machine and post more info...Who put in the parts for you?

A tech at a store, licensed under the store to do work?
Or some guy that your cousins use for dogsitting?

If it was a guy at a store or tech DEPARTMENT, I would take it back with a fair amount of yelling.it was a friends dad who does a lot with computers. and its cool IM just going to replace the mother board and yes if it was a licencsed tech i would take it back with a whole HEAP of yelling. o and thanks for replying. In the future try to stay away from a BIOS update unless you specifically need one. They can be more trouble than they are worth.

Solve : Computer keep freezing, no idea what's going on?

Answer»

Well it's my bro cpu not mine. He got Vista, and he just upgrade his processor to i7, ram to 4g ddr3 and he change his motherboard.
Before he bring it to shop to upgrade his computer, it's fine, but it started freezing when he turn on his computer after the upgrade. His computer will start to freeze after 15-30 mins when he turn on his computer. His GRAPHIC card is gtx 8800 I tried checking his cpu heat, but it's fine. My bro even bring it to shop to fix it but ... well they charge him $59 and they only upgrade his graphic card driver which i can help him do it WITHIN 10 mins lol. What i think is his norton anti virus is causing the freeze, but i'm not sure.Uninstall Norton using the Norton Removal Tool...
There are goog FREE choices out there such as AVG AVAST etc...
Also you need to contact the shop to see if they applied Thermal Compound when assembling the machine.
What make and wattage is the PSU ? ?they did apply the thermal compound, and how to check the wattage for i7? http://web.aanet.com.au/~SnooP/psucalc.php <- cant check watts for i7 i WOULD guess it's close to any of the newer Quad-Cores starting with the Q6600...
But i was asking about the PSU...I suggest you contact the shop. Also check the drives - I had a freezing problem once because of Logitech webcam drivers.Found the solution. Norton is causing the freeze, fix the problem after i uninsall it with norton removal tool. Thanks guys
Btw Psu is the power supply right? is there a way to check it without the sticker? my bro refuse to open his case.Good 'ol Norton. You can depend on it SCREWING up your stuff.

Alan <>< lol yea. I'm using avg atm, when i 1st install norton, i get freeze straight away, i already tell my bro not to use it but he dont listen to me I have Norton.. never had a problem. Never ever ever. Quote from: Mulreay on July 31, 2009, 05:41:36 AM

I have Norton.. never had a problem. Never ever ever.

I've had issues with Norton.

It's not always the best solution. I've come to the conclusion that Peter Norton was standing there with his arms crossed because he was waiting for his software to do something. Peter Norton is NOT the scoundrel...and never was...Symantec is and will always be.

Peter Norton actually wrote some very strong apps...some of which are still in use today....
Or they've been emulated.I'm aware of this, sure got you going though eh?

I was REFERRING to the picture that was on the box for Norton Desktop. That app was not a good idea.

Solve : Want to buy this computer??

Answer»

I looked at all the specifications and studied them all and I think I want to buy this computer. Not being a expert on computers I could use some help. I think this one would be a good budget computer for my money but not sure. Can someone help me out and let me know if this is not a good investment.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4915043&CatId=6you need to let us know what you plan on using it for before we can advise if you would be getting your moneys worth out if.browsing the internet, editing photos, a little bit of WORD processing maybe. And also my husband likes to look at horse racing on the internet. That's about all, really don't use it for games.

ThanksOh and of course watching movies! Then it will probably suit your needs fine...although i detest MSI MBoards it looks like a good deal otherwise.I'd say GRAB it. At that price, that's an amazing system. Thanks Patio, why do you dislike MSI motherboards, are they bad news?

Thanks soybean for your reply as well.I just haven't been very lucky with them...but for the price i wouldn't let that hold you back.
After all even if you use it for a Year or so and need a new board you could replace it for about 75 Bucks.
Go for it.Okay, thanks Patio! What software will you use for the photo editing?
Great setup for the price!
I just wanted to make sure you're not using Adobe, like Creative SUITE 4 -- although, from what little I know, this system should do pretty well, even if you are going to use a VERSION of Photoshop.
And then I've never had an issue with MSI boards, it really is the luck of the draw. Some components are bad when they are brand new, there doesn't seem to be a solution for that.

Solve : Pc sound input to usb headset?

Answer»

I have my xbox 360 sound plugged into my pc's sound input. I can get the sound out of my speakers fine, but I WANT it to come out of my usb headset, and no matter what settings I change around no matter what it still only comes out of the speakers. Is this even possible? I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work, but I can't get it to. Any information would be helpful at all. Can't you just connect your headset to the XBox?No, you can't connect a USB headset to xbox 360, it just doesn't work. But, I FOUND a way to get it to work. I had to download Virtual AUDIO Cable, it did the trick. Can ROUTE any input to any output through a virtual repeater.Cool, I had no idea that they made the XBox so you can't connect a USB audio device.

Does that sound odd?

Solve : Editing Vista?

Answer»
I am currently on a computer that is used by the whole family, and every time I get on the computer all my settings have been changed. My OS is Vista Home Edition 64bit.

What I would like to do is lock out the 'Personalization' option from being edited. I am wondering if this can be done?

I would consider downloading/purchasing software, if someone could recommend one that is safe to USE.

Or if anyone has some idea on how it could be done?Create a separate account for yourself (password PROTECTED) then nobody can change your settings.
Let me know if you need anymore help
Thanks Mulreay.

I should have mentioned that I would like to keep everything central to one account.

I have used a different account for everyone in the family last time when I was using XP, but it became too difficult.

Any other options?Hi MATE as far as I know there is no way to lock out personalization on a computer. It's not something that would ever require administrator privileges but since your all using the same account your all administrators anyway.
The only way I suggest you do it is to create one more account called family and let the rest of the family use the new account. You can TRANSFER anything over to the new account easy enough, most destop programmes will transfer anyway anything else you can put into a folder in the sharing file.
I have two on mine.

Solve : Computer shuts down extremeley slow?

Answer»

Ok...when I turn the pc off like I said it takes forever to shut down. I tried to run chkdsk and chkdsk/f but it gets to ten percent and stops. Then I tell it to scan as I RESTART but never does, it says I have a dirty flag on the c: drive if that makes since to anybody I've never heard of it...can you HELP?Click Start, then Run, type cmd, and click "Ok".
At the prompt in the command window that opens, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
and press "Enter".
Does the RESULT of this indicate the drive is "Dirty"?
yes it does * If you have Spyware Doctor installed, uninstall it.
* If you have ZoneAlarm installed, open it, click the "Overview" tab, then select "Preferences", and UNcheck the "Protect ZA Client" check BOX.

Click Start, then Run, type cmd in the Open box and click "OK".
At the prompt in the Command window, type the following commands, pressing "Enter" after each one:
Please, note the spaces.

* chkntfs /d <--- (This will reset autocheck options to default...will come back invalid on some installations)
* chkntfs /c C: <--- (This will allow checking the specified drive )
* chkntfs /x C: <--- (The x switch tells Windows to NOT check the specified drive on the next boot)

At this point, restart your computer, it will not do a chkdsk and will boot directly to Windows.

This next step is IMPORTANT as this is where the Dirty Bit will be unset.

Click Start, then Run, type cmd in the Open box and click "OK".
At the command prompt, type the following, pressing "Enter" after each one:
Again, note the spaces.

* chkdsk /f /r C: <--- (To manually run a full chkdsk operation on the specified drive)
* Y <--- (To accept having it run on the next boot)

This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset the Dirty Bit.
Be patient...this is a very thorough check and will take quite a while.

Finally, when the chkdsk operation has completed, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
press "Enter", and Windows will confirm that the Dirty Bit is not set on that drive.

Reboot again and see if chkdsk still runs on startup. thanks, however I have neither one of those programs so therefore just go to the other steps I guess? I appreciate it and I'll let you know if it didn't work...thanks againYes, and you're welcome yea...didn't work, whenever i did the "chkdsk /f /r C:" and then "Y" and pressed enter on both of them it said it wil do a chkdsk on restart.

dirty bit was still there at this time...

chdsk did not happen on restartDid you run through all those steps?yesUse chkdsk /r...

/r switch implies /f so there's no need for the extra switch...Correct - chkdsk /r is the only switch you need.

1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000I'm not finding the autoendtasks or the other two I went where you said...they're not their though...You can create the keys & values.

Solve : Changing vista 32 bit to 64 bit?

Answer»

I am thinking of going to a 64 bit operating system. I have vista business edition in 32 bit and have ordered Windows 7 and am thinking of using it in 64 bit. I understand that you can change vista os to 64 bit and that there is a dvd for that purpose from Microsoft. What are the gotchas to doing that? Do I need to do anything in advance? you need a 64-bit CPU to run a 64-bit Operating system.and less driver and software compatibitly

Not neccessarily true...how long have you been running Vista 64bit ? ?

dgriffin i suggest collecting all your program CD's for re-install...back up all your important data including email contacts; TEXT files if any and anything else you want to save...

Unfortunately there is not a smooth in place transition from 32bit to 64bit OS's in place for Windows...they have the files and settings transfer wizard but after having that fail miserably on 3 different machines for me i WOULD not recommend relying on it.
Count on doing a FULL clean install and re-installing all your apps.
So those backups are important.

Solve : computer shuts down after it turns on?

Answer»

hello, my problem is that my computer TURNS off when i turn it on. sometimes it does not even go to the startup screen. my monitor says it is going to sleep after MAYBE 2 seconds after the computer turns on and then shuts down. my computer is an hp m8400f, with an AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor, 3072MB system memory, 720GB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce 8500GT graphics card, and Windows Vista.Do you have a power supply of equal or greater wattage that you can borrow from another computer, or someone? Try to borrow one and swap in in there to see if that's the problem... If it works, give the power supply back to whoever you borrowed it from and order another one..

Have you changed anything inside the computer lately, like unplugged cables or made any other physical CONFIGURATION changes?

Have you looked inside the computer lately, period? There may be a serious dust factor..In which case you need to purchase a can of compressed air and thorough clean out the inside...Quote from: dr.r0ckz0 on August 10, 2009, 12:34:24 PM

my monitor says it is going to sleep

What is the exact message you get ?i havent looked inside since i know nothing of the inside of a computer, but ill see. for the power supply, i switched it with my monitor's cable and same thing. my monitor just says 'monitor is going to sleep'Quote from: dr.r0ckz0 on August 10, 2009, 05:23:48 PM

When I say power supply I don't mean the cable..... I'm talking about the large cube-like thing inside your computer that the cable attaches to. The power chord plugs directly into it.

It's fairly simple to pull out and replace.....But you have to make absolutely sure that EVERY connection the current power supply makes to the motherboard and peripheral components, is replaced by the power supply that you borrow...Take a long close look at what the current power supply is attached to, and duplicate those connections with the power supply that you borrow........

You must also make sure that when you do replace the power supply that it is unplugged from the WALL. Static electricity is also a factor to be concerned about when opening a computer..... After unplugging the computer and opening it up....find some unpainted piece of metal and touch it a few times to discharge and static electricity that may be lingering.... And if you move around a little, more static electricity could be generated, so touch the non painted metal every few minutes or so..

Now open the computer, disconnect all connections from the power supply to the computer...find a Philips screwdriver and unscrew the four screws in back of the power supply on the outside of the case (near where the cable plugs into the computer)...be care not to lets the power supply drop down onto your mother board after unscrewing it.....hold one of your hands on it on the power supply... When you got the last screw out....CAREFULLY pull out the powersupply and put the other power supply in... Note: you don't have to completely install the other power supply at this point... You can leave it on the table top after plugging it into the computer and plugging it into the wall...... This is only for testing-purposes... Once you've got it hooked up.....fire it up and see if the problem is corrected..

ok i will try that tomorrow and while you're inside the computer....have a look at the dust factor............look closely at the cpu heatsink and generally, the whole inside

we don't want any dust build upit was not my supply unit, but i did find the problem. i asked my cousin for help and he thinks its either my ram or my motherboard. so im going to use my warranty to fix this issue, but thanks for the help

Solve : Hard Freeze?

Answer»

My SYSTEM is current hard freezing at random points. No error message, just the screen as it is frozen. If the Hard Drive is working at the time, the light stays on. If not it is off. Only a hard restart FIXES the issue.

Here is what I have done, all have not changed the situation.

It happened in XP so I went to Windows 7.

Upgraded video card

Replaced ram

Changed the connection point for the HD on the Mobo

Changed the power cord connected to the HD

Updated the BIOS

one THING not on your list was a HD surface scan. I recommend it (chkdsk /r)

it takes a few hours, so it might be best to run it overnight. I've seen this type of symptom in my own symptom and in all cases it turned out to be bad/failing sectors on one of my drives.I did do that. Sorry. Forgot to mention it. If it's not the HDD the 2 other most common causes for freezing are memory issues or overheating...
For the Memory DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours...any ERRORS at all and you have a bad stick of RAM.

For the overheating open a side panel and direct a small fan's airflow into the case...check the housekeeping when you remove the panel and clean as neccessary using a can of compressed air. Use a QTip to hold fan blades in place when blasting them to prevent damage.

You could also DLoad and run SpeedFan and post your TEMPS here...Just put in new ram. Had the issue before and after. I am going to DL that program and post the results. I doubt it is heat as it happens 5 minutes into running the comp checking mail or 4 hours into playing Fallout 3. You just never know. Another thing to try is a different power supply. I noticed that it was not mentioned in the things you've tried.

I found SIMILAR problems in this forum, but none that match mine. I hope someone can help.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A205 Laptop with Vista. I have began experiencing a frustrating problem.
If I am watching a video online or running an extensive COMPUTER scan, my computer shuts down.
When I power back on, for example, I have yahoo mail set to remember me for 2 weeks. I have to sign in to that page or any other login page all over again.
A few times, it would not even turn back on. It would start to come on and SHUT down. o The fan seems to be running ok and can't understand how that would affect the glitch of not remembering my cookies.
Any advice? I have run virus and REGISTRY scans and don't seem to find anything out of the ordinary. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security PROGRAMS in use (antivirus, firewall)

Solve : Computer slowed down drastically?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista SP1. I got a virus about 2 weeks AGO and re installed Vista. Everything worked fine for a week, then the computer became SLOW at some POINT. I use the computer for music PRODUCTION so I noticed everything slowed down because my projects were suddenly overloading the system.

Anyway, I have tried to work what is wrong. I have scanned with Kaperksy, Ad Aware, Spybot and not found anything. I have checked device manager and everything is working fine. There is plenty of space on the hard disk. I have checked programs running at startup and disabled any unnecessary. I have checked disks for errors.

So what else could it be? And everything worked fine for a week after re installing the operating system, then everything seemed to suddenly slow down. I had been installing a lot of software, but only programs I had on before I re installed the operating system.

Any help appreciated

AWDid you re-install your MBoard device drivers ? ?There is a feature where you can restore the OS back to what is was like when the computer was new, so I just used that. It worked for about a week then everything slowed down.

Do you think I should re install the Mboard device drivers then? It won't hurt anything...
Depending on how the restore CD/partition was created they may have forgotten a few important details.

Solve : saved .gif images dont show up in Vista?

Answer»

Whenever I save a .gif image to my pictures they show up as a white BOX. I have no problems with the other forms of images showing up. I just started using Vista and have a brand new laptop, so I don't know if its my computer or vista. My xp computer never gave me problems with that. I know that the images aren't protected or anything because its all .gifs and I EVEN uploaded one of my own .gifs from my old computer onto the internet and tried to save it on my Vista computer and got the white box again. Any idea what's going on?
Thanks for your time! What folder are you saving the images to?

Vista does have native support for *.gif images.I'm saving them to the "my pictures" folder. I thought it would be odd if Vista didn't support them. I'm going to see if Dell can HELP me.

I am not sure of your exact problem but you could try opening the image in 'Edit'.

I then SAVED a second copy of the image in file format .jpg, or .jpeg and deleted the original.

Worth a shot.

Thanks for your help! I started using a screenshot and saving them from there which is working out pretty well, but I'm definitely going to try your way and see if its EASIER. Thanks again! What's wrong with Xerox ? ?too many copies .... Gotcha...

Solve : Lack of Windows Vista disc in new PC purchase?

Answer»

The story I'm getting from Gateway and retailer(Fry's), is that they don't include a copy of the installed OS with their PCs(?!). This sounds right? I'm in the midst of figuring out a driver hiccup in updating my daughter's newly purchased HP laptop from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate, but at least I have DVDs of both the OS and the upgrade. This is our FOURTH or fifth family computer, and I've never seen one come without the ORIGINAL OS disc- if loaded by somebody else. It seems like you always need it eventually for new drivers, something goes or suppossedly goes corrupt, etc.

A "Recovery Disc" can be created on the Gateway PC:

" This option is used to create a backup copy of the drivers and applications that are included with the computer. This backup copy does not include the operating system. The backup created during this PROCESS is burned within Gateway® Recovery Management and should be labeled and stored in a safe place. "

This will suffice for all future troubleshooting and verification/authentication with Microsoft- if need arises?

I got 2 days left to take this thing back.

PLEASE. Thank you.The Drivers will not be on the MS CD...even if you got one.
There should be a Gateway Driver CD which is where you will find them...
If not Drivers are Free and available at the manuf. website.

But if you are having issues i suggest returning the machine before the warranty dries up.Most today's computers come without OS CD, which is a shame, because without it, in case of serious trouble, your only option is full recovery. No repair is possible.
Well, I guess, while buying a new computer, you should add couple of hundred of dollars for OS CD.Thanks for the courtesy and helpfulness of the replies, particularly a 2nd one from patio. It appears, unless wanting to shell-out bucks for the OS or start over with something you can load & keep the disc(s), you get drivers elsewhere, backup data prudently, protect against power glitches, & hope you don't have to resort to a Day 1 image. Thx again. Well, there is another option, you should keep in mind - hard drive image.
If you create one, say weekly, if something goes wrong with the computer, no MATTER, software, hardware, in 30 minutes, you got everything back, as it was a week ago. All programs, data, etc.

Thank you very much but that hasn't worked either! Any other ideas?
Ok, first of all remember to fix your reply so that your own message does not get mixed into the "quote" box. People might think you just quoted someone else and didn't say anything more.

Try using Mozilla Firefox Browser to see if it has the same problem that internet explorer 7 is currently having for you.thanks again and sorry i messed up the reply. Both browsers have the same error message referring to a failed connection as I have tried firefox as well. The connection is apparent in every other way but the browser will not display the internet. I have tried disabling the security, re-installing new anti-virus software, checking add-ons, etc, etc. I can obviously do a clean re-install of vista and hope that works but wondered if there was a known fix or if any one else had encountered this problem.on another thought, try going to safe mode and attempting to connect to internet again if you haven't already tested it. (need to select safe mode with networking to be sure safe mode doesn't disable your internet pending normal reboot)

Solve : Force installation of unsigned activex controls in Vista?

Answer»

As you know, in Vista it is (nearly) impossible to install an unsigned activex control. However, I have a client who absolutely needs to install a particular acivex control (made by someone who she KNOWS and trusts) that is unsigned.

Does anyone know the PROCEDURE to force Vista to install unsigned active x controls? I know it exists, I just can't find it anywhere on the net. Google has FAILED me and I'm scared and alone... Update:

I've attempted to install the control under the local admin account, allowed unsigned activex controls to be installed in IE7, and added the site to my trusted sites list. it seems it is being blocked by vista itself.

There are no GPO policies to worry about and no domain admins as they are in a workgroup.

Any ideas?http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/permanently-turn-off-and-disable-64-bit-x64-windows-vista-forced-driver-signature-signing-with-readydriver-plus/Thanks for the reply, but I'm looking to install an unsigned ActiveX control, not an unsigned driver. UNLESS you think this would help with ActiveX also?I used to use Ready Driver Plus, but I don't know the answer regarding ActiveX.
Install/uninstall takes just few seconds, plus restarting computer. Worth to try.I've never had any problems registering my activeX controls... they aren't SIGNED..

I just had to start command prompt as an Admin and run regsvr32 on the OCX files.

I'm not so sure this is an activex issue anymore...the client is trying to install a plugin to view reports. It seems like the activex control installs fine, however I can't find it in the list of IE add-ons to see if it's enabled or disabled.

any new insights?

Solve : Vista right-click menu gone old-style?

Not a problem HI mate, just restored, and it hasn't changed. I don't want to go back any further.Does the same thing happen in My Computer, and Windows Explorer?Windows Explorer: Fine
Inside any programs: Fine
On the desktop: Fine except program shortcuts. My Computer, Recycle Bin, My Documents are fine.
Taskbar: FineSo, ONLY desktop shortcuts display that short (#1) menu? No, the desktop shortcuts display the #2 menu.

When I right-clicked My Computer on the desktop, #1 appeared.Well, it's all normal then...hehehehe

Context menus change DEPENDING on what you right click on. That's why they are called context menus, they give you options that are in context with what you click on.

If you right click on the taskbar it will give yet another completely different context menu.

This is true.

But that is not the answer to my question.

If you look at the two images I posted which were taken from screenshots off my desktop, you will see that they look different. In #1, there is a line down the left side of all the options. In #2, there isn't.

In #1, when you hover over an option, the blue highlight fades in and out. In #2, it just appears suddenly.

I prefer #1 style, which is what I am trying to ask, how can I change #2 back to #1 because it sure was not LIKE that a few weeks ago.

Also I just tried changing the theme back to Windows Vista rather than Modified Theme, and when it had completed, I right clicked a shortcut on my desktop and it looked like #1. I right clicked again and it had changed back to #2. There must be something wrong.#1 is for my computer. #2 is everything else.

#1 has a "line" because there are no Menu Icons.

#2 doesn't. It has the icons.

a "workaround" might be to uninstall ALL programs that add a shell extension, or disable the shell extensions themselves (for example, 7-zip, powerarchiver, And I mean, *All*.

one of them might be only compatible with IContextMenu2 and the effects you see are only with IContextMenu3... (effects, I might add, that I haven't seen ever- the "fade in" for menu items simply isn't implemented to begin with, AFAIK)

You can't. Sorry, bud.
Actually you are totally wrong dude I have been in the it trade for 12 years. Most people KNOW how to RESET windows passwords if they are lost and mac passwords too its not rocket science.

. There is such thing called a password reset disk. There is also a method by booting in safe mode too.

If you want too create a password reset disk pm me.the OP will need the password reset disk; which means they will have had to taken the extra step of creating it.

of course, if you don't mean the windows created "password reset disk" but rather a "password cracker", well; there is a caveat there.

All Password "cracker" tools I've seen took advantage of a subtle weakness of the original LM-type hashes, which are GENERATED for compatibility reasons. If you use a password that is longer then a CERTAIN length or has certain characters then no LM (Lan Manager) hash is generated (meaning there is no hash to crack). In that case the only thing left is the newer NTLM hashes which would be difficult to crack in a timely fashion on a modern PC.

here's some more info on that:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299656

But for the sake of argument the original question asked if they could log on without a password; and Carbon answered it properly. If they got the password using one of these disks then they would be logging on with the password, which probably solves their situation but would not technically answer their question. (although in all fairness the basic idea here is to solve the larger problem rather then bicker about exactly what the question asked). Additionally I might query the use of the word "dude" and the claim of being in the "trade" for 12 years, most people who are old enough to have been doing this for 12 years have removed the word "dude" from their everyday vernacular, and additionally it's not a "trade"... a "trade" would be something like carpentry, roofing, etc, jobs where you can get an apprenticeship. PC repair is rather a niche business type generated by the easy access to PCs by the general population, who know little about the workings of a PC.aint there a web site u can use to get in to your pc from a diffrent one

Second QUESTION. I have a brand new Dell. I have a 19 inch screen and my program for my home PAGE does not go full screen. Neither does my email.I have tried to drag it to the position I WANT, but the computer does not allow me to do this.Try the options on this web link:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA102106651033.aspx

Hope that HELPS.:'(I appreciate the answer, but I am using the word processor program rather than office. Because of this the answer did not help me. Are there any other suggestions?

Solve : operating system not found?

Answer»

Thank you for any help.

I been having trouble with my gateway T-series laptop. When turned on I get the screen for bios settings, boot menu, and Lan Boot. It STAYS on this screen. If I go to F12 Lan Boot a message comes up:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM
Operating System not found

So I restarted with the Operating system disk (windows vista) in and then I get the problem of selecting driver to be installed. In the WINDOW there are none that can be selected. After clicking OK I get a message of: No device drivers were found. MAKE sure that the installation media contains the CORRECT drivers, and then click OK.

Thank you for any help or suggestions, Dan

Go to BIOS. Make sure, that the boot order reads: floppy, CD, HD
Disable Boot from Network (wording is different on every machine, may say Integrated NIC, Network, PXE-xxxxxxx)

Solve : data usage tracker?

Answer»

i use hughes net satellite service which offers less download capacity than cable per dollar spent.live in a rural area, huges or verizion wireless is only known options.i have a limit of 375 mb. in a a24 hour period before the fair access policy shuts me down.i live next door to my folks and use a router hardwired to their house to let them have hi-speed also.i play online games a lot but never come close to the cap but when my folks watch videos online ,huges counts that as a d/l and they cap the service quickly, now i can't play my game for 24 hours!hughes has a DATA usage tracker that is hard to get into and notorious for not updating in a timely manner.my last outage was 7 hours behind the current time!,when i called hughes they had the same problem and were of no help!PARENTS are not so good with computers and i am desperately looking for a data usage tracker that my mom and dad can look at and easily tell when they are close to the cap and stop downloading!please help,SORRY this post is so long. sattelite internet is bad in general (i have sources if anyone needs them)
why not just tell them not to watch videos online

Solve : UAC consent, logon/off screens language bar.?

Answer»

How would I remove the language bar from the UAC consent and logon/logoff screens in Vista?

On the UAC, it is a complete language bar in the bottom right of the screen.

On the logon/logoff screens, it is a button with EN written in it in the bottom left of the screen.

Anyone know how to remove or hide these?See Here...

Nice sig BTW...THANKS patio.

Big oops about the signature, I'll change it.

EDIT: Unfortunately the link you gave me doesn't contain any information about a language bar.
But it will tell you how to DISABLE UAC if you like...No, I don't want to disable it, I find it PRETTY USEFUL, I just want to know how to remove the language bar.
