Solve : $2000 *censored*-PLEASE HELP?

Answer»

OK, so I am NEWBIE and first I just want to thank everybody for forums like this. I was just about to toss this computer at the wall.

My problem is this computer is soooooo soooooo slow. Belive it or not it is barely year old. The place were I am buying the laptop from told me to bring it in and they will do something called "SYSTEM RESTORE".They said that I will LOSE everything, because they will make it so it is like the computer is coming out of the box for the first time. So my first question is how do I save my pictures, music, microsoft office and all of the other programs I have added to my computer? The second question is, will I lose Norton Anti Virus? or is that safe during a system restore?

Now as I said before I told the guys that my laptop is running slow and they said they are going to do a SYSTEM RESTORE, is this something you would suggest be the fixer for a slow, freezing pain in the a** laptop? if not what do you suggest I do?

Here is my System Properties
Dell
Inspiron 1501
Windows Vista Basic
Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3500+ 1.80 GHz
446 MB
32-bit Operating System

My Computer Rating is a 2.0 which is determine by the lowest subscore
3.7 for the Processor
2.0 for the MEMORY Operation Per Second
3.5 for the DESKTOP performance for Windows Aero
3.1 for the 3D business and gaming graphics performance
4.6 for the Disk data transfer rate

Here is my other problem. I would like to uninstall WINDOWS VISTA and install WINDOWS XP. Would this fix some of my problems?

I just need some advice please on what to do. Quote

The second question is, will I lose Norton Anti Virus?

You will want to be rid of Norton Anti-Virus.  It uses a lot of system resources, and is most likely a small part of why your system is running so slow.  There are alternative anti-virus programs that are resource-lean.Thank you for your response Aegis.

I think I am stuck with Norton for 234 more days. Do you have any suggestions for anti-virus programs that are resource-lean?
Norton is  a secondary problem.
Your main problem is:
Quote
446 MB
I'm assuming it's 448MB, not 446MB.
You have only 512MB of RAM, from which your on-board video takes away 64MB.
Vista needs 2GB of RAM to run properly. Thanks Broni for responding to my problem.

When I click on "view basic Information about your computer"  under the memory(RAM) it has 446 MB.

So does this mean I have to uninstall Windows Vista and use Windows Xp? That is what somebody told me

All you need is more RAM. Go to www.crucial.com, enter your computer make, and model, and it'll tell you what you can get.
Most likely, you'll get 2GB of RAM for around $50.
Going back to XP is too much trouble, and 512MB for XP is barely enough, anyway.in response to getting rid of norton...

get avast or avg antivirus, they have freeware versions which simply gives you only basic virus protection with the automatic daily updates. Uses less resources and does job FINE. As always, they're always updating their virus databases at least once a day so don't worry about it not having good detection rates.

Solve : Registry failure...?

Answer»

I was using win2k (sp4) and one fine day following error appeared while starting the pc:

<STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannotload the hive (file):

or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory

.>

Same error KEEPS on showing, even I start in 'safe mode' or in 'last good...', So I used another HDD with winxp and started the pc. Fitted the HDD with win2k as a slave and now I can access all the files from it.

I believe, there is always a backup of the registry file and not sure where to find it. Please help me to restore the registry, so that I can start my pc using the win2k operating system. I've checked both HDD by scandisk and no bad sector was found.

My pc is P4 2.8ghz HT, nvidia FX5200 AGP, 768MB ram. I was using AVG free antivirus, zone alarm firewall...

Help please...

The contents of the %systemroot%\System32\REPAIR folder are usually updated when you create or update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), which also contains backup copies of parts of your registry.

Win2K does not automatically backup the registry unless you use an add-on utility such as ERUNT...
The one backup you have may get you out of trouble here though...Unable to find the folder WINNT\System32\REPAIR on the HDD which has win2k OS.

Any other hope...

jawanda56 How about C:\WINNT\repair ? ?Yes, I've located this folder in drive H:\WINNT\repair, of size 7.34mb. Its contents are :

autoexec.nt 1kb
config.nt 3kb

ntuser.dat 120kb
sam 16kb
secsetup.ini 511kb

setup.txt 137kb
software 5708kb

1. Install Recovery Console, if it's not installed, yet.

2. Install Erunt, which works like XP\Vista System Restore (or even better). I use it on all of my Windows versions.

Thanks Broni for the valuable links. I'll go through them and post the steps done and results.

jawanda56 Cool Sorry, I kept you waiting...

Studied the articles suggested by Broni.
I'd win2k CD, which is not bootable. As per the procedure written in the instructions for set up, made 4 setup disk FLOPPIES. Booted the pc on these floppies to start the win2k set up process. Selected the repair option.

Now my win2k operating system is starting normal. Everything in the PC is as before. No loss of any data or any program.

Thanks for the help...

Solve : Computer won't boot! Has it crashed??

Answer»

I think my COMPUTER has crashed! I hope someone can HELP me. For the past two days when I turn the computer on a STARTUP REPAIR box appears, saying"Your computer was unable to start. Startup Repair is CHECKING your system for problems." Then the WORDS "Searching for problems" and a status bar that moves very slowly (on dial-up connection) and today it froze and my PC is not responding to any commands. Even when I turn the power off and turn it back on that STARTUP REPAIR box remains! I purchased this eMachines T3616 Desktop PC with AMD Sempron Processor 3600+ last August 2007. It has Windows Vista Home Basic OS. Last week I began to see STRANGE error messages, starting with "A disk read error occurred." I probably should have acted then but I didn't know it would lead to this!! Does this sound as if my computer has crashed? If it has, what should I do? Please help me with your advice. Thank you so much.

jandal
I'd take advantage of warranty, right away.Broni...
Really?? Do you think it's that serious? This computer was a gift from my brother and I don't even remember if he gave me the warranty or not! I was hoping it wasn't this bad.
I thank you for your input.    Well, with pretty serious errors, you don't want to tinker with your computer to void warranty.

Solve : Sound Max pop up?

Answer»

I have installed service pack 1 form my Vista 32bit and now get an annoying pop up evertime i start my computer, It tells me that i have to REINSTALL sound MAX even though i don't use it. (I have an XFI sound card in my computer) How do i get rid of this annoying pop up. my mainboard is: Asus Crosshair. Thanks!Well, since the PROBLEM only occurs when you start your computer, I believe the easiest solution would be refraining from starting your computer. I mean, really, who actually needs their computer to be TURNED on?

Seriously, though, I have no clue. Maybe you should call up the Sound Max people or something.Computer_Hopeless
It's always good idea to think twice before hitting Reply button, don't you think?

Crafty
What sound card do you have?Crafty it sounds as if the Vista drivers for that card are poorly written...i agree with Broni...what card is it ?I fixed it, I just went into msconfig and unchecked the soundmax application. Thanks!

You're Welcome...but it sounds more like a Band-Aid than a fix...you may run into issues with sound down the road.

Solve : Windows Vista Home Premium Issue!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

Hi there, I'm a newest user of Windows VISTA (My favorite is XP) and I have a clue within. I have a wireless network and I would LIKE to transfer files from a pc to another pc (booth connected to the same network) but I don't find the way to share directories. Also, I have found the way to create users in the OS.

Please help me to solve this stuff

Regards...
Quote

Also, I have found the way to create users in the OS.
Is there a question  here?  okay.....

with the FILE sharing, you need to make sure the network mode on your vista computer is private. when you go into network and sharing centre, it should say private next to your wireless network AREA. It it says public you need to change.

To share files you need to enable file sharing in your network and sharing centre, and turn password protected sharing off.

Then right click on the file you want to share and click the tab the top that says sharing. enable the file to be shared and create a name for itl. You need to then map the network drive on the vista computer

Solve : 0xc0000142 Error?

Answer»

Hi,

I don't know if this is the correct sub-forum to post this, apologies if it isn't.

My problem:

I was browsing the internet an hour ago, when I closed the browser (firefox), my anti-virus said that it had found a virus and that I would need to reboot the computer as the file was being used (file was WININET.dll).

So I reboot. When it started, it kept telling me:
"(x) This application has failed to start because wininet.dll was not found. Re-installing the application MAY fix this problem."

I tried to go to the windows folder, but whenever I clicked on the My Computer icon, it said "UNREGISTERED class".

Then I remembered that a friend of mine had this problem, so I asked him what he did at the time, he told me he searched for the file but couldn't find it (what happened to me as well), so then he downloaded the file, PASTED it on the system32 folder and the problem was fixed.

I did that as well, then reboot the computer, but as it was starting, I got the message:
"The application failed to initialize correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to finish this application."

So no programs work, whenever I click on something, it says "windows explorer stopped working". then it restarts but nothing happens.

Can anyone assist me please ?
Thanks very much.If you are running Win2K or XP and anything newer power down the machine...re-boot and go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it.
When it finishes re-boot the machine and you should be good to go.Thanks for your reply.

I'm sorry, I should have specified, I'm using Vista.Vista Instructions:

The System File Checker is an important application which scans the integrity of all the protected system files on your PC. Should it locate an incorrect version of a specific protected file SFC automatically replaces it with the correct Microsoft version.

To check your Windows protected files, proceed as follows:

1/ Click the Start button

2/ From the Start Menu, Click All programs followed by Accessories

3/ In the Accessories menu, Right Click on the Command Prompt option

4/ From the drop down menu that appears, Click on the 'Run as administrator' option

5/ If you have the User Account CONTROL (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorisation prior to the command prompt opening. You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator PASSWORD etc.

6/ In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter

7/ A message will appear stating that 'the system scan will begin'

8/ Be patient because the scan may take some time

9/ If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue

10/ If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

11/ After the scan has completed, Close the command prompt window
Thanks a lot mate, I'll report back in a few minutes.Seems to be working fine, Thanks so much!

You got it ! ....And Welcome to CH !Cheers mate

And Thanks again for your help.

Out of curiosity, what exactly is the on board video? Is that what's on it when you first buy it? Or is that stuff I may have put on the computer?On-board video works like standalone video CARD, but it's built-in chipset, which uses regular computer RAM (sharing), while separate video card uses its own RAM.
In general - XP - 1GB, Vista - 2GB if you want it work flawlessly.

Solve : saving webpages help?

Answer»

hi im not very GOOD with computers so would appreciate some help. I have a fairly new laptop with windows vista installed. Everything works fine except one problem-saving webpages from the internet. As usual i go to page then save as. it lists file name and save as type. In the save as type there are various options- WEB archive SINGLE file, webpage complete, textfile, webpage HTML only. I have tried saving webpage with all these but everytime i save it to my documents,INSTEAD of saving the webpage it saves it in notepad/wordpad obviously with no colours/graphics etc. I am not sure why but for some reason as i say when i save webpages they are saving as a word/note pad document and i cant work out how to change it so that the webpages are saving normally to my documents.
thanks

it saves it in notepad/wordpad
What does extension of saved page say?

"xyz" is an extensionnot quite sure what u mean but when i save it to my documents i click on it and it opens in word or note pad. Then there is a column that says date MODIFIED then a column that say type-it says-the webpages are either HTM file or MHT file and then size of file
however i have now found the problem i just clicked on properties on a webpage and it says open with- and for some reason it has changed to open with-notepad- i have now changed it to internet explorer and the webpages are now opening properly. Not sure how the setting managed to change but now seem to have rectified this

Solve : Need to make fonts on websites large?

Answer»

Hi,
HP A6300 with Windows Vista Home Premium.
Due to VISUAL impairment I have to make things really large.  My computer friend made adjustment when he set my equipment up, but something got messed up last NIGHT – I don’t remember what – and now my MS Word is okay, but problem is internet because I have to make adjustments every time I go to a website.  I went to Internet Options and also Control Panel, but can’t find how/where to make everything large again,In the browser window hold down the CTRL key and hit the + key to your liking...this can also be done with the mouse if you have a scroll wheel...I NOTICE there's also a zoom adjust command at bottom right hand corner of websites.

Isn't there a way I can set to show large fonts on all sites permanently? I THOUGHT I saw in somewhere within the control panel; just can't remember/find it.

THANKS. Actually yes it can be done this way...in your browser of choice on the top left there are a few listings...select View and then Font size and set it to what you like...re-boot and the changes should take effect.
Sorry about your vision...i'm going thru the same thing right now.
Best of Luck.

patio.Got it!  Thanks a lot, patio.

(btw, I'm having corneal transplant surgery soon - one eye at a time)Great News...feel free to stop by anytime.

Hope that procedure goes smooth as silk for you !

Solve : Do I need to buy a new copy of Vista??

Answer»

I think that I need to replace my motherboard and/or my CPU. I have an OEM version of Vista Home Premium and wonder if I will have to pay another $100 for a new copy of Vista when I repair my system.NO. If you bought a legal copy of vista  then you can upgrade your machine as much as you LIKE. As long as it is the same computer with the product key sticker on the side you can swap as many parts as you WANT. You can even upgrade your hard drive and install your copy of vista on that. It STARTED off by only spinning up and doing nothing else, no beeps, no video, nothing. After I reset the CMOS it just sits there and continuously beeps long beeps, when I start it up. I took out everything and just connected the PSU, KB, and memory and it still does the same thing.

BTW it's an DFI Infinity MB, with and AMD athlon 4600.If you know the make and model of the bios then you may be able to look uo there website and look for what the different beeps mean

Solve : Vista repair disc.?

I dl'd this file and tried burning this as an ISO image to create a repair disk for my laptop but as you can see it downloads as a torrent file, not and iso file. I tried renaming the file to iso but I get the message that it's not an iso file when I go to burn it. Any ideas?

http://www.istartedsomething.com/20070929/vista-sp1-recovery-disc/What does download as a torrent file?Sorry, wrong link
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/#comment-125249I see now. You have to use torrent agent, then. I use BitLord: http://www.bitlord.com/Thanks Broni. I'm downloading the file from another site. I'll let you know if it's any good.Oh, cool. I downloaded it through torrent, and it took only 10 minutes.
BTW, thanks for the link.Broni, did you try to burn it to a CD as an image? Do you suppose it will really act as a repair disk?I burned it, and it's bootable, which is its purpose. As the article mentions:
Quote

The Windows Vista DVD has a "recovery center" that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.
Burned CD Quote
contains the contents of the Windows Vista DVD's "recovery center,"
I also burned the image to a CD but how can you TELL if it's bootable? The only experience I've had with burning images is a few weeks ago I burned a unbuntu image to a disk and when I stuck it in, the program started. I did that with this disk on my main computer running XP and it just opened to let me see the files.Put CD in, and restart computer.Well, I tried it and it APPEARS to work. Handy to have if I have a failure.Cool Broni, I WONDER how many people know about this. From my limited knowledge about COMPUTERS this is almost like having the OS disks. Almost every computer that one can buy nowdays comes with no OS disks. Heck, your lucky if you get a recovery disk. If this works like it's advertised to work, almost everyone should know about it. Your ideas? No. You're going too far.
Actually, you got me curious.
I wasn't familiar with a WHOLE issue, and I did some digging.
I found out, that creating "Recovery CD" feature was actually added with SP1.
The whole subject is nicely explained here: http://www.istartedsomething.com/20070929/vista-sp1-recovery-disc/#comment-39091
Quote
this tool creates merely a slimmed-down Windows installation disc. It takes a normal Windows installation disc image and strips out all the “installation” functionality leaving only the repair tools and common system files.
More, or less, it'll let you boot with it, if your computer is not bootable, and it works like Windows XP CD Repair option.

When you boot with "Recovery CD", at first you'll be presented with regular Vista installation screen:

You'll need to select "Repair your computer" to get to these options:

According to the article, the above feature should be found at “Start menu” > “All programs” > “Maintenance” > “Create a Recovery Disc”, but....I don't have it listed there. I wonder, if you do.
I did some search, and I found it here:
C:\Windows\SMINST\CD Creator.exeI can't find either of these on my computer but I haven't figured out Vista's search engine yet. I'm sure I installed  SP1 the other day.
Edit. Just after I posted, I turned on my laptop and there was an update. Guess what? it's SP1

Hope somebody can help.  Have new laptop, Windows Vista.  Whenever I try to type something, the cursor jumps ahead, or behind, what I'm typing.  Sometimes it jumps paragraphs or sentences.  It's very frustrating to be typing, look up and see jibberish where a word should be.  I'll go to correct it only to have the cursor move again to someplace else.  Has anyone ever had this PROBLEM?My GUESS is that you're ACCIDENTALLY hitting the mouse TOUCHPAD on the laptop while you type, I've done it a lot of times myself.
If you use the touchpad you will just have to train yourself not to hit it. But if you don't use touchpad you can probably disable it.
Look for a control panel for the touchpad in the notification area on the taskbar (next to the clock).
If you got one you should be able to disable it in the control panel. Thanks, I don't use the pad, I use a mouse, but it's worth a try.
Thanks

Solve : IE won't connect to internet?

Answer»

I have Windows XP. I recently received Verizon broadband. All was working fine, then IE stopped connecting to the internet. I have rebooted the modem, unplugged and turned off all, reconnected all in sequence. I've tried pinging the modem; won't ping. I've tried resetting the IP address; nothing. It just tells me there's a conflict with the IP address. I reset it BACK to obtain automatically, and it still won't work. I've released, flushed dns, and renewed the IP address; nothing. The 1394 adapter will not repair. It states TCP/IP is not enabled. When I check in the properties for this, it is enabled. The modem is fine, because I've hooked my laptop up to it, which runs Vista. Verizon has tried relentlessly to solve my problem, without success. I have disabled/enabled the adapters. I'm at a lost. I need help.Sounds like a form of maleware or spyware, try scanning you pc an see if that DONT help.I ran McAfree and Norton and they really didn't find much of any value. Erased all, but still can't connect.I'm not to FAMILIAR with mcafee but I would try AVG scanning your drive if you can obtain the program or try using spybot.Try to RUN following command:
netsh int ip reset
Turn off computer, reset modem, restart computer.

Solve : Autoplay?

Answer»

I can't get AUTOPLAY to work on Vista Home. There are no devices listed at the bottom of the page. I can make all the changes I want to and save them but it still won't AUTO PLAY. I've checked the DVD Rom and it works correctly. I even went into device manager and uninstalled the DVD Rom but I still can't get auto play to function. Any ideas?Check here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/01/14/autoplayautorun-not-working-or-missing-not-open-in-windows-vista/I finally got it working by using the decimal 145 in the registry. Only one more problem to fix. There is an internet button on this laptop and it suddenly stopped working. It's supposed to function like this: press once when the COMPUTER is running and the internet browser comes up or press it when the computer is off and it will start the computer and log onto the internet. I know this button works to  start the computer but it won't bring up the internet. This is a Toshiba laptop Satellite A210.I'm glad, you got it fixed.
You may want to start new topic about the second issue.I just threw that in there. I didn't really expect to receive any help about that button. It's time to call Toshiba.A call to Toshiba fixed the problem by having me do a reset on internet options.Very well

Solve : Vista User Accounts?

Answer»

Hello everybody,

I have some questions about creating accounts in WINDOWS, in Vista in particular.  I have never created user accounts in Windows before and so some of my questions might be a bit basic.  My problem is that I have a single administrator account which is the account I use daily and no other accounts.  What I want is an additional account that is either a standandard or a guest account.  I need this because a friend's son likes to play online games on my computer and I don't want him accidently deleting a file or installing a virus or anything like that.  I turned on the guest account feature in Vista and ran into a few problems.  It seems that none of the software that I installed via the administrator account is available here.  They are available in that you can click on the icon but nothing comes up.  While this is totally fine from my point of view this makes me think of two problems:

1. If a game is a Java game and even if I have Java installed does this mean that my friend's son won't be able to play it?
2. Even though I have zone alarm installed does this mean that the guest account won't be protected by it?

Furthermore, I actually went to a site I know he goes to and found that the games there are Flash games.  However, I was able to play them with my administrator account by not theguest account.  This leads me to more questions:

3. How do I allow the guest account to play these Flash games in the safest way?
4. Would I be BETTER off with a STANDARD account for him?
5. If the answer to QUESTION 5 is yes then how do I configure that in the safest way?

Any HELP would be most appreciated,

Thanks

Sachin

Solve : Unwanted strange MSConfig entries?

Answer»

I've noticed some strange entries in my MS Config list that haven't been there before and I don't know where they came from, nor how to get them to stop coming back.

Startup ITEM                                      Command                             Location
LuResult                                           \LuResult.txt                          CommonStartup

ntuser                                               \ntuser.bak                            Common Startup

ntuser.tmp                                         \ntuser.tmp.LOG                    Common Startup

Could someone enlighten me as to where these entries are coming from, how do I get them to stop regenerating, etc.?

I've updated definitions and did full scans with AVG Free, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, Adaware 2007, A Squared Free, and Spybot S&D, and none of those have given me any insight as to what's causing this.  I haven't added any new software, hardware, etc., and I just noticed these entries today.

I have also made sure that all MS updates are installed.  I'd sure APPRECIATE any and all helpful input as how to get rid of this annoyance.

LuResult.txt - Do you have Norton?

MP3Lib.zor - Do you download torrents?evilfantasy, thanks for the reply.  The ntuser entries have NEVER been in my MSConfig before--why now?

No Norton products installed--and haven't been since the pc was new about 3-4 yrs. ago--removed it immediately at that time.

Don't download torrents--don't even know what those are.Not sure on the ntuser entries. have you created a new profile recently? Might even be something included in an update from MS (they have been known to do unexplainable things in updates)

Post a Hijackthis log real quick. We can easily rule in or out malware that way.

I don't think it is anything malware related. You can have HJT fix this one entry.

MSconfig is meant to be a diagnostics tool. Read this to better understand why not to use MSconfig as a Startup Manager: Dealing with Startup Processes

I suggest booting into Normal Startup mode and using a startup manager from the above link or a favorite of mine like StartUp Lite

I will look around some more on the entries and be back in a bit. The one entry that I asked about torrents is the only one to worry about (I think) Be back after I try to dig up some information.

Thats likely where the LuResult.txt entry is coming from. Live Update Result.txt

Have you had Zone Alarm installed? I think the .zor is from ZAs Mail Safe

.zor file extension
ZoneAlarm Mailsafe
http://www.file-extensions.org/zor-file-extensionevilfantasy, I fixed the BHO that u suggested, then downloaded/installed StartUp Lite--no unnecessary startups found.

Forgot to answer your question about creating a user profile.  If u mean, have I created a new user account, I have not.

The Symantec Antivirus scanner entry in HiJack This is from an online scan that I did months ago.  Zone Alarm has never been on this pc.  I use Windows firewall and it is on.

While browsing thru HiJack This, I found that I have indeed installed new software and that was PalTalk yesterday.  Today is when I found all the weird entries in MSConfig that I've never had before.  Could that be a clue to something?  Yahoo Messenger was acting really stupid yesterday when I was chatting with my cousin--never could get voice chat to work so I thought I'd try a new chat program.  I installed PalTalk, but didn't go any further with it.

Hope some of this info might shed some light.  Thanks.I'm at a loss. I also missed an entry to fix.

We can do a more thorough scan and see if it turns up anything. This one will show me more startup entries. You will probably need to use two posts on this one, one for each log.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from here or here to your Desktop.
Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  •   When the scan is complete, two text files will open
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
    •   Add the contents of main.txt in your post.
    •   Also add extra.txt to your post.
    • The text from these files may exceed the maximum post length for this forum, and may need to be sent over 2 or more posts. Please ensure all text is posted.
    What DSS will do:
    • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
    • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
    • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Thats not all of the LOGS. There should have been another hijackthis log along with other information.

Are you the only one who uses this PC?

    2008-02-21 17:30:55C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\uTorrent << I asked about torrents....

    2008-02-10 21:45:38C:\WINDOWS\system32\zllictbl.dat << Zone Alarm data file

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

    Do this.

    Create a Startup List

    1. Open HijackThis and select Open the Misc Tools section
    2. Click on the button which says Generate StartupList log
    3. Click Yes when prompted and a notepad document will open.
    4. Save the log to the desktop and attach it in the next post. Forgot that my son DID use this pc a month or so ago when he was home.

After running dss.exe, the only logs I got were main.txt and extra.txt, and I did see it running HJT during the scan, but no log was generated for it that I can find.

I'm at a loss now what to do next for sure. Thanks for your time and help evilfantasy.  We gave it our best shot and I learned a few things in the process.

I'll keep checking this post to see if anyone comes up with any other ideas.

    Solve : Reboot trouble?

    Answer»

I have recently built a new PC and installed Vista Home Premium 64bit. However when I RESTART the system it gets to the loading BAR and freezes (the loading bar doesn't light up - just faded). I think it could have something to do with my motherboard drivers (my motherboard is an Asus P5KC) but I've been to the WEBSITE and installed recent drivers for my chipset and ethernet . I don't know what else to try, can anyone shed some light on my situation?

Thanks in advance. Did this new build ever run ? ?
Are you sure the MBoard drivers are the correct ones ? ?
Have you tried the drivers on the CD that shipped with the board ? ?The new build runs fine - apart from the restart problem.
I'm pretty sure the drivers are right - went to the Asus support page, found my mobo model, downloaded drivers.
The CD was intended for XP .

However I haven't updated the BIOS or downloaded something called ATK ACPI utility and my modem drivers are not up to date but that's all I can think of. Can you BOOT into Safe Mode without any problems?

Have you tried running your build with XP instead of Vista?  I'm no hardware expert, but there could be a compatibility issue.I have not tried running in safe mode and restarting. Additionally I don't have an XP disk, all I had with my old computer was well I made a recovery disk.Aside from reformatting, the only suggestion I can think of is to check all of your hardware drivers and bring them up to date.  And perhaps list all of your hardware (Everest can make this a bit easier for you) and maybe someone can VERIFY whether or not there are any compatibility issues.  Like I said, I'm not a hardware expert (my specialty is malware and software), so my knowledge in the area only extends so far.  If you hadn't PM'ed me, I probably wouldn't have even bothered.  Heh.

I THINK the sound schemes they've associated with Vista are very WIMPY. That's my biggest complaint about the new system. I want to ADD some Windows XP sounds. I installed Norton 360 and also ran my WINDOWS update last week and then shut down my computer.  When I put my password in the next day it wouldn't work.  I noticed after a couple times that all of my keys were in different places.  Like the D KEY when hit is actually the E key and the S ket is the period.  All of the keys are in the wrong places and I can't figure out how to fix it.  I have tried a new KEYBOARD, same issue.  I have resorted to using the onscreen keyboard under ACCESSIBILITY just to function.  I have reinstalled windows, I have uninstalled Norton 360 and scanned for viruses.... Any ideas??Go into Control Panel / Keyboard / Properties.  What's there?

I reinstalled over the top.  Does it make a difference?

Windows of course. I will try safe mode.

There is no mapping options in control panel and all is normal.

    Solve : e-mail set up?

    Answer»

I have Vista for my os. I use gmail for my e-mail. I cant seem to MAKE the gmail my default e-mail. When ever I want to send a link or something it sends me to the windows e-mail system. I HOPE that makes sense.I presume you access Gmail solely via a web browser.  I don't believe you can do what you want to do, accessing your mail via web browser.  You web browser is not an email program.  Windows Mail is an email program.  That's why it opens when you click on an email link.

Have you thought about enabling POP or IMAP mail in your Gmail so that you can use Windows Mail with your Gmail account?I tried that but to no avail, probably because I did it wrong. I will try it again. If I succeed, how will I be able to use the e-mail then? I tried again and it said the host could not be found.Exactly what did you do?  This is a two-part process.  You NEED to enable POP or IMAP in Gmail and you need to setup the Gmail account in Windows Mail.  Did you logon to Gmail via your browser and enable POP or IMAP?  The screen where POP is enabled looks like this:   http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13273&topic=13293I've been using gmail so long I didn't realize that I never set up widows thru my isp. That would help wouldn't it?  Well, you probably could be using an email account PROVIDED by your ISP.  Is that what you mean?  Yes, you may want to do that, even if you continue using Gmail.

But, you don't need to start using an ISP email account or set one up on Windows Mail in order to use Windows Mail for your Gmail account.  Again, to get Windows Mail working with a Gmail account, the account MUST setup in Windows Mail and POP or IMAP (whichever you prefer, or can do both) needs to be enabled from a setup screen accessable via web browser while logged onto your Gmail account (see link I previously posted).

Here's one of the screens you would use when creating your Gmail account in Windows Mail: .

Solve : Vista doesn't recognize all memory?

    Answer»

I just installed 2 Gb of RAM in my computer, for a total of 4Gb. Vista's system check says 1928, how come? The bios says 4 Gbs?? I guess everyone is flat ignorant about this, rightThat's the way to get people to answer you     insult them.  How often does that work for you?32 bit Vista cannot use all of 4 GB, even though the BIOS sees it. Upgrade to 64 bit Vista if your CPU is 64 bit, otherwise you spent money on RAM you cannot use.

I guess everyone is flat ignorant about this
Check HERE  It really gets frustrating waiting all day and getting nothing. Thanks Broni, I have a BS in psychology already.
So, I have two Gb of high dollar ram that my system wont even utilize? And if I upgrade to 64 bit, alot of programs wont run 64 yet, right? Oh yeah...Hejlik, you are wrong about Vista not using but 2 Gb. I just talked with a software specialist and he said Vista could use whatever the MB supports for 32bit. Caan't believe Broni let you get away with that, and every other cheese head that read it. That why people get frustrated here.

Look Here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946003/ Your "software specialist" is an idiot.
Take it from a memory specialist.
    http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251

Or try Googling it perhaps... there are loads of sites confirming that any 32 bit OS will not be able to utilize 4 GB of RAM. It is a 32 bit architecture limitation not a Vista issue.

But I would say that Vista should be able to detect more than 2 GB under normal circumstances. But with your "charming" attitude I doubt anyone here wants to help you troubleshoot it.Please look at this!

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946003/

Besides that, I have a 32 bit machine that had 3 gb of ram, and it used it, displayed it on system properties, etec.. What would the computer companies sell machines with over 2 gb of ram on gaming machines?
As for my demeanor...such tender little duckies here 1. you've never mentioned you had SP1 installed. (Many users still don't).
    2. It doesn't change anything. Vista still can't use 4 GB of Ram, it just reports 4 GB.
    Quote
This change OCCURS because Windows Vista with SP1 reports how much physical memory installed on your computer. All versions of Windows NT-based operating systems before Windows Vista Service SP1 report how much memory available to the operating system. This change in Windows Vista SP1 is a reporting change only.
And I already said 2 GB sounded low...I read the article you posted a link to...

Vista will report it PROPERLY only if SP1 is installed...

Vista will not utilise memory in the 3 to 4G range...
I don't want to beat this to death, but our office manager at work went to Fry's Electronics and bought a new HP with Vista, and 3 Gb of ram. Why do they put in there if it does use it?? Why would MS make an OS upgrade that will not use more than 2 Gb of Ram, it  just doesn't amke sense. Are you kidding me?
    From Crucial
    Quote
For instance, when you install 4GB of memory in a 32-bit Windows system (the most common version; 64-bit systems are typically used only by high-end users), your system will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. Is the problem bad memory?

    From Microsoft
    Quote
On computers that have a 32-bit operating system, more than 3 GB of system memory, and with a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista SP1, users will see a larger difference in how much memory is reported as available to the operating system compared to how much physical memory is installed. This is because some physical address space must be RESERVED as I/O regions for memory mapped PERIPHERALS. These I/O regions are allocated between the 3 GB physical address and the 4 GB upper physical address limit.

    Solve : Vista Media Player?

    Answer»

I've just bought a Dell desktop running Vista Home Premium.
With my old computer (XP Home), I could log on to a website page, click on a video sample download shortcut which opened media player, which downloaded and played the video clip. I could then click on file, save media as, and save it to 'my VIDEOS', then later burn it to a disc if I decided to keep it.
My question is, how do I do this with the Vista media player? What web SITE, and what type of video file? One of the websites I've used is www.myvue.com where I'd choose a film, click info, then film clip or trailer. As I said , I was ok with XP, but I'm finding Vista less straight forward, LIKE my scanner being in Photo Gallery instead of on the desktop for instance! In Firefox, I CLICKED on clip, and trailer in 5, or 6 movies, and it says "No video".
In IE, it gives me "Open", or "Save" option.
    I'm with Vista, as well.

    Solve : Defrag won't run?

    Answer»

I am trying to defrag my laptop but I get the message:

“Disk Defragmenter has detected chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume (C:).
    Please run Chkdsk /f”

When I go to the command prompt to run Chkdsk  /f I get the message:

“Chkdsk connot run because the volume is in use by another system. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system is restarted (Y/N)”

Selecting yes and on a system RESTART I get the message:

“Cannot open volume for direct access”

I have tried running from safe mode, but the system won’t boot into safe mode, it stops while loading system drivers.

I have also tried running the defrag.exe but defrag.exe c: only nets me the original message that chkdsk is scheduled to run…

I am sure this is probably an insanely easy thing to get past, but I just don’t know what to do.

So I am stumped I have checked the task scheduler and there is no task scheduled to run chkdsk there, and my laptop which is horrendously slow and in definite need a of a good defrag won’t defrag.

I use McAfee  for my firewall and virus protection, and I wonder if it is not trying to also run disk utilities, though I do not see any tasks scheduled there either.

I am using Windows XP media edition as my OS

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Frank

    Disable Boinc
Disable McAffee including email scanning if it's turned on
WinZip also does not need to run at startup

Then try and run chkdsk /r from the Start/Run command prompt...

P.S. You can safely switch off also install pending files....sounds like some Windows updates didn't finish but we need to run chkdsk and defrag first. Thanks again Patio:

I found some information on my problem. Unfortunately it does not look good. Here is a thread I found while searching google....This person pretty much has the exact same problem I do trying to run chkdsk (which seems to be my real problem)

    http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/19442-chkdsk-problems.html

for some reason chkdsk can not check the volume of drive C at startup (before windows or any programs are even loaded)
since it can't check the volume it remain checked as needed to be run. since it does not run, defrag can't start because it is waiting for chkdsk to complete.

I am in some kind of borked cycle.

of course I can not find my system CD to see if I can do a repair, but I think that's my next step.Have you tried what was suggested yet and did that produce any results ? ?
Yes, I tried all of them, and a couple others I found on other forums with people with this problem. It looks like I have a corrupted file somewhere. So I get to back up all of my files and do a system re-install.

thank you again Patio. You're more than Welcome...and Welcome to CH !Update:

Well not wanting to do a system REINSTALL (two years worth of work on that laptop), I decided to try something a bit more drastic.

I upgraded the OS to Vista.

I can now defrag the hard drive

The best part is I did not lose any files, so although that fix cost me the price of the Vista upgrade, I am happy I did not have to worry about forgetting something and than losing it.

Love your forum Patio, and thanks for the Auslogics Disk Defrag link.
I let it run over night, there were way too many red boxes for me to wait and watch it.

Solve : Reinstall WMP11 on Vista?

    Answer»

I am having problems reinstalling WMP11 on Vista, WMP11 comes with Vista, and is loosely intergraded with it, and therefor, cannot be installed. You can not download the Windows XP version of WMP11 EITHER, as it PLAIN and simply will not work.

It is not under "Turn on or off Windows features [Windows Components]" or "Uninstall a Program"

I searched Google for a while today, and found absolutely nothing.

    Vista uses WMP version: 11.0.6001.6346
(XP does not use this version, it uses a version that is specifically made for XP)

    Currently using Vista SP1 (BETA)

I do not recall exactly when it happened, I just noticed that my sound was no longer auto-adjusting, and that my audio was not overlapping, and I figured that I never got to setting up the options to do that... and I was unable to, since it requires the Now Playing thing to be working. I think the issue happened way too far back... it just took me too long to notice. If I run system restore, my system will have a bit too much reverted to keep it functioning in its current state (too many things)

I was just thinking about that earlier today
I honestly have no idea, I could uninstall SP1, but it would take a long time, and I am not sure how "safe" it is to do that after having run it for a whileYeah, I don't mind trying betas of regular programs, but for the OS, I'd never do it on my main computer.

Didn't you create any backup before installing SP1?

There was nothing to back up, I had done a complete reformat.

If this seems to be what the issue is caused by, I can live with using VLC for video for a while, thats fine with me..
(woahgosh.. saying that probably made WMP's memory go up by 50MB)Oh, so you installed SP1, right after you installed Vista?
On the other hand, you realize, that number of people is having WMP problems. Maybe it's not SP1. It was just my guess.Okay, I recently uninstalled SP1 for Vista (since the real release is out now... I am upgrading to that)

    I figured out the problem:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer
Has the incorrect permission settings. I am not part of the allowed groups for reading or having full control of half the stuff in there, including Plugins.

    How do I fix that?

(Yes, I realize I resurrected this TOPIC. I think I found the solution to a problem many people have had, and MUST get it solved ASAP so we can all get this into the FAQ bin so people will be able to fix it in the future)

Solve : Vista toolbar slides missing?

    Answer»

Suddenly (on Vista home premium) when I hover over the items displayed on my toolbar the 'pop up' display of the page has disappeared - how can I get this service back?Right click on taskbar empty space, click Properties, and make sure, you have this checked:
    Broni,

When the properties/taskbar tabs are clicked the "Show window previews (thumbnails)" box shows up as faded and unable to accept a check mark.  I think, you have Aero disabled.
       1. Right click on the desktop and select "Personalize".
       2. Choose "Window Color and Appearance".
       3. Click the blue link titled "Open classic appearance properties for more color options".
       4. Change the color-scheme from "WINDOWS Vista Basic" to "Windows Aero".
Tried this, and yes it was on Windows Vista basic.
Changed to Aero - clicked apply - SCREEN goes B/W for around 30 secs, returns to colour and stays on Aero - click O.K.
But then after closing STILL does not work - return to Personalize and it's back on basic again!
How much RAM do you have?I have 1.00gb.
As the unit is under 1 year old and still under warranty I'd lose this if I messed about adding more.1GB of RAM, and 128MB of video RAM is what M$ lists as minimum to run Aero, but in real life, I'd double both. That may be your problem.
...and, no, adding RAM won't void your warranty.

Y'know this is going to sound weird, but suddenly the service just appeared again this afternoon!

Thanks for your help and advice anyway Broni, as always, you are most helpful to us laymen.

Bit of a learning curve though it works well.Correct me if I'm wrong patio but isn't Proximitron only for http proxies?

    liambiscuit
I doubt you'll be able to find any proxies that can fulfill your goal. Open proxies are usually http proxies meant only for browsing. Http proxies won't have the necessary ports open.

Instead you might WANT to look at something like Tor.You may be correct DeerPark however opening specific ports can be done...

That's exactly what it is... a file transfer protocol.
If you got access to a FTP server you can up- or download files to it with an FTP client.0.o finally a computer term that means what it says All of them mean what they say...then do me a favor patio and solve this for me... its a code in c#

What version of VS is this?
When are you getting the error? At compile time or run time?I'd say that code was written in Visual Basic. It is most definitely C# code, not VB.
While it could in theory be written in any text editor, it was most likely written in either Visual Studio or C# Express. If not I would highly recommend using one of these since they're by far the best C# editors.

its c sharp vb express edition (08)...

Solve : Different monitor driver for Vista?

    Answer»

    Hello,
I have RECENTLY bought a new computer with Windows Vista. However, I picked a DIFFERENT cheaper MONITOR to the one that was part of the package. The problem is that I dont think the new monitor has been set up to deal with windows Vista as the screen looks stretched horizontally(1024/768). And if I change the resolution to 1280/800, then it doesnt stretch to fit the screen (and cannot be stretched using the monitor settings).

    The 1280/768 also doesn't work

Furthermore in both cases, the fonts look blurry.

Should MONITORS be installed to work with Vista? Do i need to download new drivers?

    It is a LiteView TFT-LCD (LM15W) 15".

Any help would be much appreciated...Monitors usually come with its drivers on CD. Did you install those? Is it WIDE screen, or regular screen monitor?
Windows version shouldn't matter. It's between your graphic card, and a monitor.

Solve : Computer failing login, then rebooting itself automatically??? Win Vista?

    Answer»

    Help Please?

Computer worked fine one day.  Then the next day during startup, at the first login screen where I choose which ACCOUNT (which I only have one), it failed saying "The Group Policy Client server failed the login."  Then the computer automatically shuts down and restarts itself.

If I boot up to this screen but do not click my account button, it will eventually SHUTDOWN and reboot itself ANYWAYS.  I tried going into SAFE Mode, same thing.

Using Windows Vista.  Any IDEA's anyone???

Solve : How do I get rid of this Bad Image window??

    Answer»

Please could someone help me, every TIME I turn my computer on and the desktop picture comes up, this window comes up Explorer.EXE - Bad Image. I have to click on it like 15 times before it doesn't come up anymore. If all is loaded on the desktop and I want to play Solitaire or HEARTS, the window will pop back up again and need to be closed. Please could someone tell me how to get rid of this?? ThanksWelcome to the CH forums.

You probably have the Explorer.exe virus (see here).  Please wait for one of the CH authorized malware removal personnel to respond or ask the mods to move your post to the Virus etc. forum.

Meantime ensure your anti-virus and firewall are up to date.

When posting please include details of your system especially the Operating System installed.  We can't be expected to guess on anything from Win.3 thru' Vista.

Edit:  It didn't take long for the CAVALRY (Broni) to arrive...

This is not a FULL message, you're getting.
It should be also saying something like:
The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\file_name is not a valid windows image....BLAH blah
    What file name is mentioned?

Their website isn't even up and from what i found the newest ver. is from 2004....
    http://www.wyvernworks.com/
Feel lucky ? ?no i downloaded it off of download.com it works great and it block proccess that could be harmful for your COMP.If you travel to majorgeeks which still has it up and clik on the Author's webpage as well that page gives a 404 error....
And i highly doubt a program 4 years old would run on Vista...
As i said you feelin lucky ? ?

no it does work on vista, my friend has it on his comp and its runnin Vista.: sigh :...alright you guys are the experts, i just wanted to make a suggestion.Hey guys, are any of these firewalls free? Its just each time i goto there online sites they seem to be asking me for cash. They seem to start of saying free then change it to (BUY now) Is there a direct link to there free VERSION that i seemed to of missed somwhere? Thanks! Here is a link for Comodo:
    http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html

I believe only the PAID version of Jetico supports Vista (correct me if I'm wrong Patio).

And I wouldn't recommend Wyvern if the latest version is INDEED 4 years old.
    Correct again Deerpark....

    Version 1 : Win98 thru XP.....Free

    Version 2 : Vista....Paid.

MelvynMelvyn, I know zilch about computers, but I did have trouble with my Fuji Finepix when I converted to Vista. I contacted the Fuji home website, explained my problem and they forwarded me a NEW disc with the upgrade on it. All serene. Of course this only applied to the Vista problem. As for the rest I stand in awe of some of the POSTERS on this FORUM. How they keep all that info in their heads beats me

    Solve : irritating mouse manuever?

    Answer»

My mouse pointer, at TIMES, will suddenly become a miniature scrollbar when I'm PASSING it over a webpage and thereby making the page scroll along with my mouse movement as though I were using the scrollbar.  This is very irritating and SERVES zero purpose as far as I am concerned....If I wanted to scroll the page I would do it using the normal scrollbar on the side of the window...anyway, I've went to mouse under control panel and there doesn't appear to be anyway of shutting this off but what do I know I don't even know what you call this little dirty mouse trick,  I hope this is making some sort of sense to somebody out there because it's getting to me.   Not sure what pertenant info you need:  RUNNING Windows Vista; Synaptics Touchpad.  This happens when you press mouse wheel. You MAY be doing it by accident, or your mouse is going south.I'm using a mouse pad, there is no wheel.   Thanks for replying though.   This will happen if you touch the right hand side of the pad.
Keep away from there and use the left hand 3/4 or so of the pad, and you won't encounter this issue.
If you access the mouse properties, there may be a way to disable this feature.
