Solve : OS Installing and Hard Disk Problems?

Answer» BASICALLY, my windows xp malfunctioned today when i got home from school. I started it up normally and the login screen froze and hanged. I rebooted and a blue screen appeared listing an error. After searching I saw that the error had to do with boot volumes. After managing to get my computer to boot from a cd i DECIDED to use the windows vista cd i had. I formatted my hard drive and tried to use it to install. An error came up saying Failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space. After reading more I used diskpart to clean my hard disk. It changed the hard disk to Unallocated Space. I tried to create a new partition and it wouldnt create it. Right now I'm doing the diskpart clean all (which i HEARD takes awhile). This all happened after I installed PANDA Global Protection 2009. I read something about partition tables being destroyed and I needed a manufacture cd. Is this the case or is there another solution. You need to boot to the Vista CD to manage PARTITIONS and then install the OS - you cannot start the process from within Windows. Is that what you are doing (it doesn't sound like it).I'm starting from boot.

Further Info: Hard Drive is DELL Part# HY281
Computer- Dell Optiplex 755You need to delete you old partition and then create a new one. Follow this order:

2. Create a new partition
3. Format your partitionQuote from: JJ 3000 on August 31, 2009, 04:43:47 PM

Solve : Need permission?

Answer»

I have a PROGRAM called WINRAR. I believe it is a compression and archive program. Every time I click on it my virus protector: TREND MICRO says beware it has a trojan virus. So I went to the control panel to delete the program. It did so but it is still in my program files. When I try and delete it there it says I need permission to rename, or REMOVE the program. How do I GET permission?

Thanks,
Peter Take ownership: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

BTW, Winrar is not malware - just add it to Trend Micro's trusted apps (I ASSUME Trend has such an option)

Solve : W7 & Outlook Express.?

Answer»

I have just built the wife a new computer, the old one is running XP Home.
She uses Outlook Express for her e-mail.
I have one of the pre-order W7 disks to PUT on her new computer (when it comes), but can I back up OE and transfer all her e-mails to whatever program W7 uses for e-mail.
Or can I save all her e-mails and put them into something like Thunderbird.
Also what is the best way to save OE mail for transfer.
I'm not familiar with Microsoft's eMail programs, but if you run out of ideas, you can forward all eMails you want to save to a web based eMail account like YAHOO, or GMAIL, then all eMail will be saved on a yahoo/gmail SERVER... If you don't have a yahoo/gmail account just set one up and forward all your eMailThanks I had not thought of that. You are most certainly welcome.......Or of course, as Count Dracula would put it, you're Velcome

Solve : Cannot download anything or watch videos?

Answer»

Hello

This is a new problem for me..suddenly my computer will not download. If I have a site and put it into rapidget..it just spin and not download. If I go directly to the download site and click on download it will hang for literally hours until it indicates it is ready to download and when I click on download it DOWNLOADS instantly no matter how large the file.

Plus I am unable to watch any videos on the net as they just spin and spin.

Cable company was out and EVERYTHING was fine as I have tried everything I know. Please advise and thank you.

Ps Yes I have cleaned firefox and done a virus scan.Sounds like rapidget is the issue...So do I remove rapidget? Thank you.Sorry its flashget.Quote from: charlesatlas on September 01, 2009, 12:00:23 PM

Sorry its flashget.
Why don't we start by uninstalling that, yes.Okay I did that and cleaned the registry and I still have the same problems. Please advise and thank you. What do you mean you cleaned the registry?I used regvac and cccleanerI don't know what regvac is but I do know that most registry cleaners CAUSE more problems than they claim to be ABLE to fix. I'd suggest booting to the Vista cd and trying either SYSTEM restore or repair.

Solve : HP Mini Netbook (110-1030CA) Start Up Help?

Answer»

So we won this computer fresh out of the box, took it home, started it up and went through the set up, DONE that, it restarted, then before everything loaded up again, it went through some hp software updating, but then when it was doing that, we had to go, so my friend just shut it down while it was updating, when we got home, we tried to start it up it said before everything could start up NORMALLY, a black screen popped up, and I don't REMEMBER what it said but it said something like this, its missing some file and needs to be repaired by inserting the Windows XP cd and going to the "REPAIR my computer" option and it needs the boot/cd file (something like that). I would be able to do that but the thing is is that there's no place to put a cd in because its a notebook mini. So I don't know what to do now? Take it in to a computer repair shop and let them WORK there magic somehow?

Here's what it looks like

Solve : Cancelling windows "remembered" password??

Answer»

I would like help to cancel an existing password that windows has “remembered”for access to an IP
The “Do you want Windows to remember this password” or some such box, pops up sometimes when using a new application etc.
I have previously used it to facilitate entry into the “members facility” of my IP provider.
However since my IP changed some numbers in the IP address, the username required to open it has changed. I have no problems there as I have the new username, but every time I enter the “Username” in the “Members Facility” of the site, windows pops up with the old “Username.” There is no PROBLEM with this, as I just ignore it, and type in the new.. APART from that is the fact that it is a rather long Username and it would be much easier if I could get rid of the old one from Windows and insert the new one, it would only require me to enter the first digits in the Username slot, the pop up to appear, click on it and hey presto the username and password are inserted.
My query, “How do I get to change the username and password that Windows has “remembered”?
I have been in through, Control Panel”, “User Accounts” but there are no stored passwords there.
I am running Vista Home Premium SP2. I have also exhausted the “Search” sections of Vista.
Any advice appreciated, but if any forthcoming, I am a computer numty, so advise in computer “baby talk” please.
IE - Tools - Interent Options - Content TAB - Auto Complete Settings - Uncheck "Ask me before saving passwords".

In the future, please just state your question WITHOUT the long explanation - it makes it easier to figure out what it is you want to KNOW Thanks and wilco You're welcome.

Solve : Dual boot Windows Vista and windows 7?

Answer»

I currently have a pc with two 500GB HDD's on it. One is in use with 32 bit Windows Vista and the other is blank. When Windows 7 ARRIVES in the UK(in the UK we are getting a clean start version RATHER than an upgrade version) in around 4 weeks time, how do I install windows 7 on the second drive such that I can dual boot the computer to work with either "Vista" or "7" and how do I set up the PC to have the dual boot option. Also since all of my settings, files, etc are on the Windows Vista DISK, will I have to copy these across to the second disk RUNNING Windows 7. Any HELP would be appreciated.Yes to the second question.

To install a second OS just boot to the Windows 7 disk and when the install routine begins you'll be asked where you want to install. Just choose the second disk. The bootloader will recognize there is another OS and from then on you'll have the option of booting to Vista or 7.ADG thanks for a very quick responseSure.

Solve : inport outlook express emails and address book into office outlook in vista?

Answer»

Runing Microsoft OFFICE 2007 in Vista can you IMPORT OUTLOOK express EMAILS into office outlook and be able to read emails and access outlook express address book as well. Yes. OUTLOOK - FILE - IMPORT / EXPORT - IMPORT FROM ANOTHER PROGRAM OR FILE - OUTLOOK EXPRESS

BTW - I've never tried it (I don't use Outlook Express). You can also TRY Exporting from Express and Importing to Outlook, though I'd guess the above method will work.

Solve : Is superAntispyware working correctly??

Answer»

I am using Vista Home Basic on an E Machine 32 bit. For security I have:
Malwarebyte ANTIMALWARE
SuperAntispyware - Professional
avast Antivirus
I usually use these about once a month for the last several months to scam my computer. Everything is fine except the SuperAntiMalware. When I use the SuperAntiMalware it scans the memory items (594) and the resistory items (5822) and never gets any threats. When I ran the last SCAN the file items started out with 24 threats and later had 104 threats and later finished with 156 threats. All the threats were "Adware tracking cookie". It got rid of them OK. My question is this: I thought the program would get rid of threats as soon as a threats appeared. If this is not true then does this mean the threat is in my computer until I run a scan? Am I CONCERNED about something that is not important?
Thanks for your time. BobTracking cookies aren't threats, or even "malware" as such. There's really no reason for real time intervention for them.ADG -
Thanks for your reply. I guess I was concerned about something that is not a problem. Bob

I'll probly be no help but:
Are you sure the adapter that plugs into the wall is actually supplying current to the machine?
Is there an indicator light on the adapter and is it coming on when plugged in?
Are you sure she has it plugged into an outlet that is energized?
No trpped breakers in the breaker box in the house?
It sounds to me like a POSSIBLE dead battery due to not being charged but it certainly could be something else.
Good luck.

Take the battery out and see if laptop runs off AC power (through the AC/DC adapter of course). This will eliminate the "battery" as the source of the problem. Shes still sleeping Im sure so I dont know if its working this morning or not. She says that the A/C indicator was lit so it should be charging. I emailed her and said to try to start it without the battery in it and see if that works.

I ASKED if someone could of messed with it and she said no. Her room mate was at work. You guys know kids ? Could she have dropped it and hurt it that WAY and is just not telling ?? Man, I hate being so far away from her let alone with her having problems there. Thanks, Ill keep you posted. She tried to fire it up at lunch break and it asked ...."launch startup repair? (recommended) she hit enter and it shut down.

I dont know if she had to highlight anything or just hit enter

like I said Im 100s of miles away and she is an impatient college student who cant chat online sounds like its ether a eletrical problem or a head problem

Solve : Need Help Retrieving Memory!!?

Answer»

Hi!

I've got a WIndows Vista Laptop. I've had it for a while, and until now it has been working fine. A couple of days ago, I encountered a problem. The computer is turning on, but it's not starting like it should. It keeps telling me there is a problem with the kernel.
I don't need the computer fixed (although if anyone could help me with that, it WOULD be GREAT).
All I acutually want is to retrieve the INFO from my laptop and put it onto another computer, if there is anything to save.
I was told that my info was still in the computer somewhere, and has a chance of being saved.
Thanks in advance for any help! Are you able to get to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

POWER on the computer and tap F8 until you come to Advanced Options... Select Safe Mode and see if it will let you in... If not, TRY Safe Mode with Command Prompt...

Solve : 2 Hard Drives with Windows 7?

Answer»

Right If you have read my last post in the "Why am I using Vista?" topic then you will know that my copy of Vista has died. I shall SHED no tears for it. For those who haven't read it, now you know. Right getting to the point I have two hard drives the first had Vista on it, the second had Win7. I wanted to reclaim the space on the first drive but Win7 won't let me format. Before I do it forcibly is their any reason why it's claiming that HDD1 is a system disk? ALSO as for as I can tell it doesn't count the HDD that it is installed onto (HDD2) as a system disk.

Confusion Prevention Key:
HDD1 930Gb Windows Vista Installation
HDD2 75Gb Win7 InstallationDepends on what methods you did to get to this point...
If you installed 7 with the Vista drive still connected then even if Vista took a dump the boot files and remnants of Vista still exist in th e root drive of C:...

If you let us know what exactly your goals are for this machine perhaps we can assist further...Me too. I have problems with Win 7 and other OS on the same boot loader.
In the future I am going to put Win7 on a HDD tray and use it without the other OS HDD present.

Mobile swap trays.(NOT USB box.)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=285&name=Removable%20Drive%20TraysIt's not Win7 that's the issue...

It's not Win7 that's the issue...
It's if you set it up properly to begin with...
You are right!

But I am gong to use the hardware solution. My small brain can visually grasp the concept of using two disparate OS on two HDDs that are never both in one PC at the same time.

Otherwise, Win 7 puts restrictions on how to alter partition size and change boot order that have me snowed under. I FINALLY got BOOT.INI WORKING the way I want and then Win7 tells me my accumulated knowledge is now folklore of the past generation.
By the time I get to understand Win7, my free version will have expired. Or only let me have two hours a day. Which may be all I can take.

Patio is right, Win7 creates the boot.ini on any other hard drive that it can find and then prevents you from formating them. In short if you intall Win7 make sure that you disconnect any other memory storage device. Or else Win7 will eat it!Let me clarify...
Say i have a Vista machine with 2 HDD's.
If i install Win7 to the 2nd HDD in the installation process Win7 is going to write certain files to the root sector of the C: drive. ( Actually any flavor of Windows will do this ).
Now when i boot i will be given the option of which OS i want to boot....

HOWEVER there is a way around this that keeps both OS's seperate from each other...

Remove the Vista HDD and hook up the 2nd drive as master.
Install Win7 to it and re-boot a few times to make sure the install worked properly.
Disconnect the Win7 HDD and replace it with the Vista drive as master then hook up the Win7 drive as slave.

Now using the BIOS at boot time you can select which HDD you want to boot to

A clean but elegant solution that works...Quote
Remove the Vista HDD and hook up the 2nd drive as master.

Disconnect the Win7 HDD and replace it with the Vista drive as master then hook up the Win7 drive as slave.

Thanks Patio. Now I get it! You're more than Welcome Geek9...

Solve : What are the NT user files ??

Answer»

In Vista
start menu/user name/ then lots of folders.
There are 8 "nt user" folders. Why are they accumulating there. What are they?
Jim
right-click your user folder with Shift held down and the context menu will contain the extra item Open Command Window Here. When you have the console up, use the command Attrib +h NTUser.dat which should make the offending file disappear.

DO NOT delete the folder in any way! This is a very important folder.
These are your own personal user files. These files are extremely small so if it's space you are after they are best LEFT alone...
Vista uses these files to save INFO about your user account and settings.Sorry for my delay,
Thanks for the input.
It's just annoying to see these all the time. I will TRY the above recommendation to hide them.
On another NOTE. Just what info is in there? Is that a security concern?

Did you do the chkdsk/r function which does the chkdsk check as you already know BUT also attempts to fix problems if it can.

Solve : Vista Poll?

Answer»

My purpose for this POLL is for users to get a feel for what others consider useful in Windows Vista, and maybe learn something. It would help also, if you specified if you consider yourself a computer tech., network admin., security/malware specialist, hobbyist, gamer, average user, whatever... The votes are permanently locked in so think careful

Although I haven't been employed in the industry much, I think I fall into the computer tech. category and generally use DEVICE Manager, disk defrag., Disk Management, configuration utility (msconfig), disk clean up, add/remove programs wizard, Internet Options, and Task Manager

I read your post about the Vista poll in the off-topic , would have loved to vote but I use WIN XP.
I think majority of people use XP.
Let's see...thanks CH Queen ...give the word and I shall bring your chariot

Anyway, I'm actually more CURIOUS about Vista at the moment... There are three items on the list that I've never use and I would like to know if anyone else ever uses them.

I added the last option a few minutes AGO... There is one or two third party utilities I use on occasion and I know others prefer third party as well...

Solve : Need Help Retrieving Memory?

Answer»

Hi!

I've got a Window Vista Laptop, and it was working fine until a couple of days ago.
It can turn on, but it doesn't start like it should. It keeps telling me there is a problem with the kernel.
I don't need it fixed (ALTHOUGH if anyone knows of any ways that would be great).
What I actually need to do is retrieve the info from my laptop and put it onto another computer, if it's possible (Mainly documents, software, music, and images).
Thanks in advance for any help! Grab one of these...

Laptop 2.5" to IDE CONVERTER...'bout 8 Bucks from any PC STORE...
This will allow you to hook up the drive to any working desktop machine to grab your data...
NOTE: Windows does not need to be working on the laptop drive to do this...
Best of Luck. Many laptops use a 2.5 inch Hard drive. If you can remove the hard drive, it can be connected to a USB adapter that will let you use another computer to read the drive contents.

oops.! Patio ALREADY mentioned the IDE adapter for a desktop. This is a better choice.
But if your second computer is another laptop. you would use the USB adapter. Here is a link the explains what they are:

http://www.newertech.com/products/usb2_adaptv2.php
When it comes to data retrieval i prefer IDE connection over USB...much more reliable... Thanks a lot to all of you for the advice! (sorry for double posting)

I'll get back to you with the results when I get the chance.

Thanks again !

Solve : Windows 7 vs. Vista: Should we hold off on buying a new computer until October??

Answer»

I'm helping a friend who's new to computers. She wants to buy a new desktop. I have a QUESTION about new OS's that are on the cusp of being released to the mass public, as it pertains to buying a new computer with the paramount GOAL of the OS operating at top notch effieciency:

All of us know that if you buy a computer today it comes pre-loaded from a factory in China with Vista already installed on it. I don't know what that pre-load circumstance is CALLED. I'll wait for someone to come along and tell us what the proper geek terminology is for that specific circumstance. For now I'll just call that condition 'pre-loaded.'

With the same scenario in mind, if you buy a computer today in September 2009, Windows will let you 'upgrade' to Windows 7 (upgrade online without the CD I think) when Windows releases it to the public in late October 2009.

I've overhead snippets of conversation where people claim that if you do an online upgrade that that type of OS installation is vastly or somewhat inferior to an OS that comes pre-loaded straight from the factory. Is that fact, or fiction? Cause my friend was wondering if she should hold her horses and wait until next month to buy a computer that comes pre-loaded with Windows 7 as opposed to buying one today with Windows Vista. Advantages? Disadvantages? This is bunk.

The best time to buy is before the Win7 release...reason being you wind up with a new machine with say Vista installed and your upgrade to Win7 is FREE...
The DLoad is direct from Microsoft so the gentlemen that stated it would be inferior simply does NOT know what he's talking about.
This is the perfect opportunity to get something for FREE and have the best of both worlds with a brand new machine.
You could even when the time comes set it up as a dual-boot system and have full ver. of both Vista and Win7...this gives you the oppportunity to decide which is best for your needs...

NOTE: Most retailers if pushed hard ENOUGH will supply the actual DVD's with the full OS on it....this is the best scenario...but you have to push them to do so.
Make sure you pursue this avenue at the time of purchase.Quote from: PATIO on September 05, 2009, 09:22:52 AM

I agree. If you buy now you get a Vista CD key plus an upgrade key you can enter online for your download. You get a lot more very cheap.Quote from: patio on September 05, 2009, 09:22:52 AM

No, it's a free upgrade when you buy a PC/laptop with Vista preinstalled.Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 05, 2009, 09:30:07 AM

I have an eMachines computer that I bought in 2007 with Vista Home Basic installed....Does that count? I really should try to keep up with these things The only way to find out would be to contact eMachines...but i doubt it if it's more than 6 months old...oh I'd call them anyway...remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease...

Solve : jumper problems?

Answer»

can a master be set to a slave?
i changed the jumper to slave but it seems it wants to read it as a master loading windows xp when im running windows vista
A bit more info on how this is set up would be helpful...heck you may even wind up with a solution...I took the hard drive out of an old HP(Windows XP). When I took it out it looked like a double hard drive,or there were 2 of them within a bracket. So i think there was a master and a slave? So I CRACKED my NEW HP (Windows vista) open and connected just the slave(from the old HP) so that i could get some pics from it.It worked just fine.i felt like a genius. then i went to connect just the master(from the old HP) but first switch the jumper to the slave setting.but this time it didnt work.it wanted to load windows xp.or reading the hard drive as primary(am i Making any sense?)so i panicked and turn the computer off now im trying to figure it out. why did it work the first time?is it because the slave was already a slave and has no PROBLEM going from one computer to the next.or maybe you cant make master an instant slave. this screen pops up first.http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t166/dennisromero408/DSC03367.jpg thanks for all your helpSometimes the BIOS GETS confused when swapping/adding HDD's...
try a few cold boots with it set as slave and see if it works...
If no luck the drive itself may have problems...cold boots?
to start the computer after it's had a long rest?A few minutes is fine...i gave it a cold boot and NOTHING. the hard drive cant be fixed?

Solve : Event viewer shows PEB Corruption on Dell Inspiron 531 with Vista SP2?

Answer»

All,evilfantasy told me this problem was probably not malware related. I wish I were experienced enough to know how to read event viewer entries and MATCH them with what is going on. I have two entries relating to this appearing in WINDOWS Vista Problem reports as well as in the event viewer/customer views/adminstrative view.

I have had printer problems off and on since March 2009, and had the addition of spooling problems while dealing with the problems that caused me to post for help with malware. The printer problems include (1)printing alignment test page ontop of the page being printed,(2) refusing to print more than one page at a time,(3) refusing to print at all. I do not know if PEB corruption has anything to do with PRINTERS or the need to return to Last known good configuration. The printer driver was reinstalled in March 2009 after printer refused to completely print a Adobe ACROBAT pdf online and the BIOS was updated at same time by a friend present at time the problem occurred. He is a electrical engineer who builds computers. I have at once time shut down something I did not(and do not understand still) and apparently it is related to the printer COMMUNICATIONS---quite some time ago, I should add.

Here is the entry:

Solve : cannot boot from optical drive?

Answer»

I am TRYING to install the vista 64 bit upon my vista home premium system but the problem that i am having is that i cannot boot from my optical drive in order to install.

i have 2 hard drives and 2 optical drives.

i tried going into the bios and placing the optical drive with the WINDOWS cd as the first bootable device followed by the harddrives.

I tried moving around the jumper connection at the back of the optical drive with the windows cd but i am really getting a hard TIME as exactly where to move it.

Sometimes i get the error message "could not find boot manager", please help
When you see "cannot find boot manager" you are BOOTING to the hd, not the cd. Just put the cd at the top of the boot order in bios, SAVE THE CHANGE and exit bios, INSERT a BOOTABLE cd in the drive and reboot.

Solve : Browser hang for no reason, and cant kill them.?

Answer»

Browser of choice: Google Chrome

the browser hangs randomly when it FEELS like it, and i can not kill it.

using Process Explorer, i can only kill the child processes (which i assume are the tabs), but cannot kill the parent process (which i assume is a manager of sorts).

then, using TCP View, i can see plenty of connections from Chrome that are still "Established", even though the child processes are all killed.

opening a new Chrome window is impossible or will be problematic (hang again) until i disconnect all the connections made by Chrome manually in TCP View.

how do i resolve this problem?

PS: if i use FireFox or IE (lol, who uses IE?), it will hang more often.Download HijackThis:

sry for not making it clear...

the Desktop (XP) is running really slow; whenever i do something, it uses an insane amount of CPU to do the work, after which, the usage of the CPU will drop down to under 5% again. opening MSN Messenger takes 50%, Chrome takes 60-70% and everything else uses 100%

the Laptop (Vista) is the one that's hanging apps randomly.

sry, i'll test the Safe Mode with Networking On later. >Let's do this one MACHINE at a time.Exactly. Let's talk about your laptop here. Start new thread about your desktop.

Solve : Remote call proceedure recovery in Vista?

Answer»

My Vista machine has been shutting down every 10 minutes or so I did what I did in XP - set restart the computer to take no action even though my computer has just been shutting down and not restarting at all.

However, while I was able to reset RPC locator PROPERTIES to take no action, I was not given a change option for the service above - plain old RPC

Is there a way to let me change?
Anything else I can try to prevent my machine from shutting down every 10 minutes?

Thank you for any advice.
SandyWhat protection apps do you have and when is the last TIME you updated and scanned ? ?

This is a common attack point for baddies...I USE System Mechanic 8 for Vista and malwarebytes. I only do one thing on this computer and I've bee doing it for abort 3 moths now and this is the first time it has randomly been shutting down. I could get fsecure for viruses but I prefer to use the online version because I OVERLOAD my computer with the one thing I do for about 8 days each month.

Bad idea. I'd suggest, you uninstall it.

Download HijackThis:

Solve : Can only log-in to Temporary Profile?

Answer»

Laptop Specs:
Toshiba Satellite A205-S4607 (Pro, I believe)
Windows Vista
I don't know how to find RAM and other specs

Problem:
When I turn on my computer, the log-in screen comes up as normal. I type in my password and it goes to the Welcome screen. But it takes about a minute and a half to on this page over the usual 10-15 seconds. It also makes a sound as if it is reading a CD, but there is no CD in the drive. Then it goes to a screen saying "Loading Desktop Settings" it stays here for a long time as well. When i finally get to the desktop, it is not my normal desktop. A small pop-up comes off the right side of my start bar and it says: Your desktop could not be loaded correctly! A temporary profile has been loaded and any changes made to it will not be saved. Also, the welcome center comes up as if it were the first time for me to use the laptop. This happens every time i try to sign in my administrative account. If I sign into guest this problem does not occur. I am able to use the laptop normally (i.e. get online, make documents, run programs) but nothing is saved because of the Temporary settings. I know my files are still on the computer because when I ran my virus scans I saw them scanning all my files. Basically what i need help with is to figure out how i can sign into my administrative account and stop my laptop from starting this temporary profile.

When it started:
I stupidly let someone use my laptop for their PERSONAL stuff. I noticed she was on Photobucket uploading and saving pictures she had saved from the internet on my computer. When she was here my computer froze and she began clicking the mouse rapidly and hitting buttons to try and make it unfreeze. I told her to just let it work itself out and wait. Then the "internet explorer has stopped working" alert came up and it just restarted the browser...but since this first time it has ever done this, it is doing it more often now. When she was done she shut down my computer using the method to just CLOSE out of everything and close the laptop shut. I did not get on my laptop for about 2 days, and when i did try to get on it began taking me to the temporary profile instead of my administrative one.

What i have done:
I've ran McAfee Virus Scan, McAfee Stinger, and Ad-Aware. There were some corrupted music files found, some cookie trackers from websites and not much more. I also tried starting my computer and PRESSING F8 to run the different diagnostics on that menu to see if i could solve the problem that way. None of them target this problem, because my files are not missing i just cannot get access to them because they are in C://Users/Arielle not C://Users/Temp.Arielle

Please help me figure out how to stop logging into a temporary profile so i can log into my own.Quote

Look at this:
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5268081.html

Use fgdn17's suggestion.

In Vista:

For all users:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
(This path is hidden--you'll need to show hidden FILES and folders first)

For just one user:

C:\Users\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startupyes you can make
copy the below script and paste in notepad

@echo off
title whatever

Solve : Error installing software - multiple users logged on??

Answer»

I have Vista Home Premium on my HP Laptop. I'm trying to install software, but keep getting an error that multiple users are logged onto the machine.

The problem is, I only have one user created on the machine, the Administrator. I do not have the guest account enabled.

Anyone know what might be causing this error? Could it be the fast switch user FUNCTION even though I don't have any other user accounts? TI would definately SUGGEST disabling the Fast User Switching service, if you will be the only one using this laptop.
Can you post a screen shot of the error that you are getting?I gave up on this for a while, but am trying again. I've removed fast user switching (by adding a dword key SOMETHING to the registry). But I STILL get the attached error when trying to install software. Anyone know why this might be happening?

[attachment DELETED by admin]Go into your services and check to see if Fast User Switching is running or not.

I’m sure that resource demands could be reduced with the removal of useless features and functions

I cannot deny that- but really, the question is- what is "useless"? many of the eye candy enhancements, obviously- and I'm sure there is a lot of other stuff, too. But what one person considers useless may be another persons main application- take the removal of movie maker- Which somebody at MS considered "useless" enough to remove- The same applies to most other features as well- Remove it- somebody will whine about it That's what the options are for when you install Windows, though

If I may draw another parallel, to Windows 95- it introduced a number of "new features"- namely the "3d-look" for windows themselves- but this came at a resource and performance hit. Is this feature then, a "useless" one? It really doesn't add to the function- why not just draw all windows white?

Because it isn't appealing at all, probably. They decided that the trade-off between resources and look was justified- not everybody agreed at the time- and since Vista's UI requirements- especially the use of D3D at the desktop, which makes for some interesting effects but a large amount of resources used. On the other hand- these features can be disabled. It would have been nice if they had allowed for Luna themes as the "vista Basic" type, but I suppose that might have amounted to an admittance of failure.

So your saying that programs developed before Vista are badly programmed because the developers could not see into the future and predict the alterations to the API documentation that Microsoft were going to make?

No. that's not what I mean at all.

Microsoft Never changed the documentation- they change the functions to only allow what the documentation specifies.

To mount a specific example- Handles.

A Handle is a 32-bit integer (16-bit in Windows 3.1) that is used for almost everything- window handles for windows, buttons, listboxes, etc, file handles, and so on and so forth- anyway- the API documentation has never made any claims into the "internal Format" of the value (I mean, let's face it- it's a long integer. nothing special about that).

However, windows 9x had a quirk- although it's handles were 32-bit, it only used the lower 16-bits- after all, it was in a sense a partly 16-bit OS in many ways.

MS never documented this. it just referred to it as a handle and left it at that.

However, one day, some clever programmer observed this behaviour, and decided, "hey, I can jam my own data into the upper 16-bits!" aqnd they did so. and it worked.

And then they try it on NT... (or upgrade to XP...) and it crashes. horribly. a completely different program get's activated, window drawing occurs on random other windows... etc. "now what in the heckleson could be going on?" they ask themselves.

Well, Windows NT actually uses the entire 32-bits for storing handle data... what they basically did was overwrite part of the handle value with their own, changing it and making it refer to something completely different, or more then likely simply make the handle invalid.

Now, MS never documented this- They probably never expected that anybody would actually shove their own data into a private handle value... but they did.

Now, this is obviously referring to bygone issues, essentially relic from the switch from 16-bit to 32-bit, but programmers do some really funky stuff, and think that because it works in say, windows 95, that it'll work elsewhere.

Here are some interesting blog posts:

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2003/12/24/45779.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2007/09/07/4796929.aspx

Now, this isn't to say, that the compatibility issues are never microsoft fault- I cannot recall any specific examples but a few functions in some OS's didn't meet the API docs at all- and programmers (the clever little beasts) found out, for example, that they might need to cast one of the parameters to a Long, or change the function header they use to get it working.

Now- these workarounds work fine, but then, MS fixes the issue- and suddenly the workarounds are causing the issue. (although, in all fairness if MS finds a bug like that with a public function they general add (yet another) application compatibility hack, so the "workaround" programs- or at least, the popular ones - still work.

Yes run has always been in every Windows, but now you have to add it manually to the start bar. Increased User Optimisation, I will admit is a general moan about the reorganisation of Windows’ file system. Good for you, memorising all those file names and locations.
ahh, I see what you mean. Actually, I've always used Windows key+R, rather then the run item on the start menu, ever since win98SE, so I suppose I'm simply not affected by this change as much as others might. I've tinkered with the "search" box and found it pretty neat in some respects- having started various programs/documents with it- when the full name just wouldn't come in the run dialog. But- on the other hand, it sort of requires the indexing service and I've never particularly been fond of that. Even with this PC, where the only visible effect is the HD activity- it just feels... wrong- to have the HD being accessed so frequently. And also that it's practically invisible... same story with windows defender, took me a while to figure out exactly what was accessing the disk (I suspected malware, actually, since it was practically invisible...) but it turned out to be windows defender.

I've memorized the locations because I use them so much- D:\VBPROJ has been my Projects folder since I used windows 3.1 ... although come to think of it I'm not sure why I need an additional "VB" folder within that. best not to think about that.

Office 2007 is the illegitimate offspring of OS10 and Vista, raised by the evil hand of Microsoft customer support team. It’s goal in life to ruin decades of IT MS Office training around the world. But I digress, back to Vista... I’m referring to the User’s personal file layout, apparently all my pictures, videos & music are not my documents and should come under such a folder.

I can't say I've ever used Office 2007... the ribbon is a neat idea, but I think they're trying to hard. At the very least there should have been an "old style" type option, because even if the new UI was easier to use overall after learning it- there was still the "learning it" part. And as you've said it practically through decades of Office training/learning- since likely the first word for windows- out the window, it really should have been more thoroughly planned.

But I think, I see what your referring to, is how the Pictures and whatnot folders are within the profile folder as opposed to within the "documents" folder. Really I can't say I've dealt with this whole "my documents" stuff ever. For me it's basically a bunch of empty folders that file dialogs start at, has been that way since I used windows 98. (although recently with XP I changed the "my documents" folder to point to D:\VBPROJ, which may explain the sudden appearance of "my pictures" and "my music" folders within it).. Honestly I've hated the whole idea of a "my documents" folder since it was introduced with windows 95... this change doesn't really phase me, since I've never liked it to begin with. I'll put my documents where I want to, *censored* )

I have a laptop on Vista and a computer on Vista. Can I access files between them? No. Never have and have given up trying. I am being totally serious when I say that I have had an easier time networking ME to XP. Oh and don’t get me started on the useless Vista loading bars that are about as accurate as the Windows 98 file transfer percentage bars. All they do is provide morons with a pretty green bar to look at and assume that their computer is doing something. (See reply to point “1.” about useless wastes of resources).
hmm, that's actually kind of weird- I had to tweak my XP install to get it networking with my Vista laptop but my new build didn't really have any problems communicating with my laptop. Although I won't say it was a "breeze" to setup, there was definitely some guesswork involved (namely, "now *censored* did I call the workgroup again?") and the whole issue where it insisted I go through this whoel song and dance to setup a folder share (something which also existed with XP's silly little "simple file sharing" option...
as far as the progress bars in the Location bar are concerned, I've found them pretty accurate, at least for viewing network computers. Only been in a few folders with pictures and whatnot... and it was a bit jerky at times but for the most part seemed to reflect the progress. I'm not sure if comparing it to win 9x's copy progress bars is really fair

I never had the issue of reduced performance until a reboot is performed before (usually after programs lock up and I can’t get stuff done). I’m loving the fact that program processes get stuck on and cannot be disabled. (I had this in XP as well but this is a Vista gripe not an XP gripe) XD. I agree with Patio on this you deserve a medal for that laptop.

heh, actually I got home this morning and it had rebooted from windows update. Well there goes my world record!

Come to think of it, I haven't had a PC hard-lockup on me since... well actually it was my Windows 3.1 laptop last month. I think the system board failed. heh, went to boot it it would stop right when it was about to show the prompt and say "divide error" and hang. Because that made perfect sense, lol. I have had programs crash, but for the most part it's Visual Basic, and it's my fault.

I actually like everything about the XP start menu, although I will admit initial complaints. I also like the Vista start menu layout... until I go into programs and oh no! Microsoft has removed the flowing folders. Now folders have to be clicked on and the contents drop down filling your menu even more. Yes I have to revert to the ‘Classic’ start menu, I would rather have the Vista one IF it was practically functional.

hmm, definitely a point there, and I cannot say that I find that feature to be a sound UI decision. I preferred the pop-up menu idea as well, myself. I think they're just trying to encourage people to use the Search bar, since it's so much harder to find stuff on the start menu otherwise .

No, asides Vista being rubbish it works fine (never crashes on Linux). I’m not the only one that has problems with DirectX on Vista. C&C3 has problems with it and that’s a fairly new game.

Well, I never have. Obviously there are going to be issues on some peoples PCs various driver and hardware issues (in your case not hardware, given Linux works fine). I've personally been quite impressed with the stability of both my laptop and now desktop with Vista, (well, aside from Crysis crashing after 30-40 minutes... but I believe that's related to my graphics card). None of my older games seem to have any issues, though. Including Need for speed:High stakes

I should really thank Vista for this actually because if it’s defrag worked then I would never have discovered IO Bit Smart Defrag. (Download it, it’s good): http://www.iobit.com/

I'll admit it. I lied. I never defragment. So to say "it works fine here" was a lie. I apologize. I was making assumptions. I should have said- "it Might work fine here". But really... Dead serious... rarely defragment ever. One of the few things that we're supposed to do frequently that I practically never do. That and I often just toss files into the root directory, with the intent, "oh I'll organize them later".... 5 years later, and 4 PCs after, I still have a copy of the Duke3d "user.con" in the root folder of D:\. Hey, I'll get to it eventually. I probably should delete it... But it's a piece of history now! A heritage file.... I couldn't!

Windows 95 – 350Mb (0.35Gb), Windows 98 – 500Mb (0.5Gb), Windows ME- 700Mb (0.7Gb), Windows XP – 1500Mb (1.5Gb), Windows Vista – 15000Mb (15Gb). So that’s:
Windows Vista – 15000Mb
Win95 – Win98 ~50% INCREASE
Win98 – Win ME ~40% increase
Win ME – Win XP ~100% increase
Win XP – Vista ~ 1000% increase

Obviously each PC will have a different amount- but we're forgetting windows 3.1, which generally used about 15MB- so that to windows 95 was around %2333. Although I think 350MB is a bit BIG for a windows 95 install. I think windows 95 could fit in around 150MB, maybe less. it was a very lean OS... well, before IE4 anyway.

Remember those lovely tabs you use to get in settings windows, like for example when you used to right click your desktop and click properties? You used to get a window with the tabs: Background, Appearance, Screen saver, etc.

Hmm, ahh, I see what you mean. really I have mixed feeling about it- at the very least they could have removed the tab from the top for each one. It's almost like their teasing us. "yeah, we could have put all the tabs here, but we'll just put one. nyah nyah."

Hmm, actually, it might be possible to show, say display properties, with all the tabs, with good ol' rundll32.

oh dear,... this is gonna get nasty...

Silly Silly Blockhead- this is a discussion, not an argument or flame war. Accessless makes some very good points.

I think one thing, that I hope we can all agree on, is that microsoft is at least trying to come up with old ideas- trying to improve what they have, and really nobody can say that's bad. And some parts of Vista are a bit- well, odd. and lacking, and whatnot- but I think it was important that MS make these bold attempts to redefine their OS- XP was pretty bold in some areas, and people complained at first- but Vista revamped a LOT of stuff- some of it worked- some of it didn't.Right bare with me here, I'm a bit rubbish rubbish with programming. So people used to write programs and add stuff after the first 16-bits which MS left blank. (I expect to see a similar thing going from 32-bit to 64). How is it programmers fault unless MS said that they were going to use those last 16 bits and the programmers were just being short sited?

You have to admit though that MS 3.1 to 95 was a bit of a jump. I mean did 3.1 actually do anything apart from being a visual aid to what was basically DOS? Windows Vista is not that far ahead of XP, not 1000% anyway. On the other hand 3.1 to Win95 is about 6000% progress, I'm surprised that they managed to compress it that much.

I think that all my OS sizes should be the maximum install size w/o expansion packs.

Can you believe that I forgot to mention Vista's security paranoia? "Did you know that you just clicked on this program?" "Will you allow this program you just opened to proceed?" "Someone has disabled your start up items!". This was one of the first things that I disabled and replaced.

And I must admit lying about IE8. I started using Firefox when they were still on IE6. I only occasionally open IE (Internet Exploiter) to disable the many adware programs and search bars that it accumulates.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/xp-vs-vista,1531.html

UAC kinda pissed me off at first too, and I disabled it- but after I reinstalled (to get all the preinstalled cruft out... it was REALLY slow with all the crap toshiba thought I needed.... manufacturers may be partly responsible for all the problems many people using Vista experience... but It has, in a way, prevented several issues. Programs I download that shouldn't need Administrator access asking for it raises a red flag for me... and several times I've discovered that that program was a trojan. Of course if I used AV software I would have been warned as well, but I've never been able to SWALLOW the hit from using Antivirus software. the main annoyance for me is getting command prompt to run as admin.... Windows-Key+R and cmd gives me a basically useless prompt. But as I said before I've gotten that down to a fairly fluid motion using the search bar, so I guess it's good for something.

It's the programmers fault- because MS never said, "this part is always blank. use it as you want." it was never documented. Some observant nerd noticed it and, instead of using up an entire 16-bytes to, you know, allocate their own space, they decided to use the handle to store their own crap. In a way, this would be akin to if you had to forward a package of mail every month or so, and discovered that half toe package was blank- so you open up the package and shoveyour own crap in there and send it off. Then one day you find it full, so you actually remove half the contents to put your own stuff in there. needless to say the recipient has no idea where their stuff is, and why half of the box is filled with possum carcasses. It's analogous to noticing that, say, the second and third digits always appear to be 0, so why not shove our own numbers in there?

3.1 wasn't what I'd call a Full Operating System... but that's why it was marketed as an operating environment I think the 64-bit transition is going much smoother, since like 16-bit before it you can still run 32-bit programs in the VDM.

Also, I wouldn't say that vista uses 15GB, I did a maximum install of Ultimate fairly recently and my windows folder is around 8GB. pretty large jump, but I think the "recommended disk space" quotes from MS take other programs into account, too. Then again, my XP Windows Folder is around 3 GB, so it's still almost double, and the XP wasn't quite so fresh.

I still don't see how its the programmers fault if MS never stated that they were going to use that left over space. Although saying that I supposed it was a bit retarded not to relies that they would eventually use it.

I've never had a company installed OS, well except the laptops but I just instantly start deleting the rubbish they send as soon as I get the things. Oh well you can't blame companies for doing this for people that don't understand that computers need programs to do things.

I just checked my windows folder. Windows has been installed for about a year now... 22.4Gb. If I didn't have a 931Gb hard drive then I would be offended. I still don't see how its the programmers fault if MS never stated that they were going to use that left over space. Although saying that I supposed it was a bit retarded not to relies that they would eventually use it.

It was RESERVED- programmers do the same thing with function parameters that are literally called "reserved" and state "this parameter must be null"... then another version of windows might add some useful feature that takes up that parameter (this is good, because if they didn't "reserve" the parameter, then everybody would need to recompile their applications... although, come to think of it, they would probably just create an "Ex" version of the function) anyway, once it get's a use, suddenly all these programmers who were using the parameter for god knows what can't figure out why the function does goofy things.

Actually, a better example is the reserved members of a structure, not reserved parameters.

The thing regarding the hi-order word being empty in the 32-bit handle- is that if MS was to explicitly say, "do not use the hi order word of this value for your own purposes" they'd have to add all sorts of other idiot-proofing type of statements. Like, "do not pass a FILETIME structure to the GetSystemTime() function. You can force it, but don't. it won't work. Likewise, don't pass a SYSTEMTIME structure into the GetFileTime() Routine for the same reason."

Also- with the handle issue, especially with hWnds (window handles) where this was used the most- they might have an excuse, if there wasn't an entire set of functions for storing extra bits of data using the handle (setProp and getProp).

In fact, a Handle is really a pointer to a Structure, but the structure MS is referencing is undocumented, and not declared in any of the windows headers. This is actually fora very good reason- if they document it, they have to support it and make sure that future versions of windows are compatible and whatnot. Instead, they keep the internal structure undocumented, but have plenty of handy functions for accessing the data within the structure. This way they can reorganize the structure (as I'm fairly certain they will have done for 64-bit) with no ill-effects to applications.

I used to have a 40Mhz 386 with a 50MB HD running windows 3.1. Windows 3.1 consumed about 9 MB of that space- that's around 18% of the total disk size. Now, with my 698GB drive, Windows consumes 19.8 GB... and I think that would include some shadow copies and whatnot, that's around 2%. In some ways an unfair comparison, but in other ways it isn't- consider the huge leap in CPU- (my quad core at 2.33 Ghz for each core compared to the 40Mhz 386 is, directly calculated, over 58 thousand times faster then it. it has 8GB of RAM, which is exactly 1024 times as much as the 8MB... considered to be gobs.. that the 386 had. Not to mention the leaps in video and sound hardware- namely the switch from CPU-processed graphics pushed through a fairly basic VGA adapter and beeps and boops to Video cards with the ability to paint billions of triangles in a frame - with time left over to apply post-processing effects - and 5.1 surround sound. Now it stands to reason that at some point an OS should be designed to take advantage of this hardware- Vista is an attempt to take a step in this direction, namely with it's use of accelerated 3-D on the desktop- and Windows 7 does nothing different here. - in addition to keeping memory from being idle with "superfetch" which in some ways is an extension of the prefetch cache used by XP.

So In many ways it "takes advantage" of the new features in a modern, up to date PC. Unfortunately it doesn't really degrade well for PCs at or near it's minimum requirements, which is one of the things MS tried to tackle with Windows 7.Quote

It looks like you have a 500 GB hard drive, partitioned into three. That is still quite a big drive for a laptop. It would be asy for a computer service/repair place to re arrange those partitions, especially SINCE your D partition is USING 6 GB out of 180 GB.
You still have 50 gb free in C drive, which is enough. You just need to take CARE that all your future FILES and installation are done in other drives...

Solve : Mysterious folder in C drive?

Answer»

There is a folder in C drive named read & execute which is PROTECTED. When I double-click on it ,it opens and shows various folders in it,each named as a number(1041,1042,2070,3042...total 26 folders) and another one named graphics.

I am unable to access any of those.

When I try to access it , it SHOW that I need permission to access this folder and I need to click continue to get access to this folder. When I click continue, it shows that I have been denied. I tried going to properties and set permissions to the folder but that too was fruitless.

When I go to the properties, it shows that it has no files or folders in it and it is of 0 bytes.

BUT when I scan it with Microsoft security essentials, it does scan some files in the folder.

I can post SCREENSHOTS if needed.

I have windows 7 HOME Basic.

Any help will be appreciated. Those are native Windows folders/files that are part of the permissions features built into Windows. Thanks for the reply.

I was just worried that it may be something fishy.

Once again,Thanks.NP...

So, I've looked around and COULD not FIND this issue anywhere.

my browser is there, I can still access task manager by pressing ctrl alt del but im at a grey screen and I cant get to the start or back to my desktop im forced to restart. Anyone have a idea as to what is going on?

here are my specs

1tb Seagate hd
Asus p6t delux v2 mobo
I7 920 cpu
x-fi xtream music sound cardGood morning monk3y and welcome to CH

If i am understanding your post correctly it sounds like a corrupt / missing driver.

I check Asus's web site for drivers on your MoBo and they had drivers all the WAY up to Windows 7 64 bit but not Windows 8 and I also checked Intel's web site for the chipset drivers and they do not have them either.

Then I checked MS Windows 8 Compatibility for your MoBo and there is 1 person that said it worked but they were having issues with DVD driver issues.

I really do not know where you may get any drivers for your PARTS. Hopefully some one will be by and may have a suggestion.

PLEASE let us know how you make out, Mike

@echo off
::
:: Batch Code Goes here
::
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion

For /F "delims=" %%a in ('cscript //nologo /E:JScript "%~dpnx0"') Do Set "CR=%%a"

for /L %%i in (1,1,20) do (
<nul set /p "=!date! !time! !CR!"
ping -n 2 127.0.0.1 > nul
)

goto :eof
*/

//
// JScript Goes Here
//
WScript.Echo (String.fromCharCode(13));

This is set up as a demo. After the JScript code runs, the CR variable contains a carriage return (no line feed). The second for STATEMENT outputs a timestamp overwriting the previous time stamp. JScript, unlike VBScript, supports block comments which is the key here. When the JScript engine runs, the batch code is invisible and when the batch code runs, the JScript code is invisible.

You can replace the second for statement with any batch language you need. The rest of the code is critical for this to work, especially the FIRST line and the paired end of JScript comment line (*/).

Good luck.

Solve : UNKNOWN DOWNLOADS?

Answer»

Could any one please advise me as to the reason I have noticed large unknown downloads of up to 200 mbs. I have checked Microsoft AUTO updates etc but can't track down the reason. I don't have wireless connection but could it be possible some one could hack into my computer to use my download .
Many thanks.
Barry M.Good morning bargun and welcome to CH

OK I must say I don't know what you are talking about or referring to, where are you getting the download information from? You getting this from your router, your download folder or ? is the 200 MB that you are talking about is this all at once or is it over a period like a month or so.

To answer one of your questions if someone could hack your network yes it can be done. Now you said that you don't have wireless do you mean you don't have wireless on the PC or do you have a wireless router even if you if don't use it on your PC?

But I don't know what OS (operating system) you have but there are many windows updates alone that can be 100's mb to almost a 1 gig.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Hello Mike.
Thanks for the welcome and I guess I don't know too much of what I'm talking about either but here goes. I use NetWorx meter to moniter TRAFFIC and the 200 mbs was all at once and no microsoft updates were LISTED . I have a vista 32 bit and it's cable , not a wireless connection . I don't have a wireless router . This has only happened once before , it was about 100 mb, also checked for m'soft updates but none scheduled . I just assumed it was some auto update in my system but this big one concerned me as I only have a 2 gb download allowance per month. Is there any softwear to check on what downloads have occurred ?
Thanks for taking the time to reply Mike , I appreciate the help.
Cheers for now.
Barry.

PS. Hope this makes it a little clearer ,bit of a novice at technology.Perhaps this free software application can give you a better handle on what is taking place re these unknown downloads.

truenorthThank you truenorth , I will download the program and give it a try. Will advise after trying.
Many thanks for your help.
Cheers.
Barry. Can you locate as to where this 200 Mb of downloads is?Thank you jason. No , I have tried everything but I can't seem to find any softwear or info that can pin point as to what is happening . I don't think I'm being hacked but would just like to know what and where it was downloaded to. Guess
I'll just have to hope it is not GOING to be a regular occurrence .
Cheers.
Barry. If you are sure about the size of the file, you can use treesize http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/Did you consider the POSSIBILITY that it might be browser updates?

They too can eat bandwidth.

Often automatic browser update, flash player updates, java update may run up that much tab. However, all at once is very less likely.Thank you again Jason and Rishav.
As to the updates you mentioned , Rishev , I do those manually so it's not them but I contacted my ISP . ( Telstra here in Australia ) and he suggested that this can be a normal updating process in the computer , and also happens on startup , as was the case in one instance and up to 200 mb. he didn't see as a great concern. Have not had any recurrence to date but I only reboot a couple of times a week as I keep it in sleep mode for quick startups.
I guess I can call the problem resolved so thank you to all who took the time to help me out , much appreciated.

Cheers.
Barry.

Out of curiosity what version of MSN messenger 7 , 8 etc or are you talking about windows live.

Do you use the MSN browser software or just MSN messenger

Is it POSSIBLE that the contacts are there and are just blocked? if so you can add them back into your list.

Hope this helps please let us know how you make out. MIKE Check the dropdown list for COLLECTED addresses...I am using windows live messenger only version 2011Quote from: patio on September 06, 2012, 06:07:10 PM

Solve : Computer resets after ~10 minutes?

Answer»

so on a ~5 year old HP desktop with Vista, the computer cannot STAY on for longer than 10 minutes, not even in safe MODE. it simply resets, goes into "Windows did not shutdown properly" message at the boot menu. i've checked all vents, everything is clean and there is enough thermal paste on the cpu, and the fan is working. do you guys think a fresh install of windows 7 would solve this easily? if not, what can the problem be? thanks!

Any changes before this occured? Have you tried going to BIOS setup only and let it stay there for more than 10 minutes? How about removing all hardware such as RAM sticks, hard drive, video(use onboard)/sound leaving the mobo, PSU connected to a monitor only? Then introduce each component on each power boot.Good morning Cobra and welcome to CH

I do believe that Jason is getting you on the right road. In my past experiences that error you are getting ends up being a couple of different things. I am going to list these in the order of highest failure to least failure.

#1... PC's memory either 1 or multiple stick failure.
#2... Video CARD memory failure
#3... PCI card failure. This can be a modem, NIC, Sound card etc.

I would download and test your memory http://www.memtest86.com/. Just download memtest and burn it to an ISO. Download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

If the memory has even 1 error than the stick is no good. This can take hours to complete. If the memory pass then just like jason2074 stated I would remove all add-on cards to see if issue is gone.

Hope this helps you. Please let us know how you make out, Mike

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in NOTEPAD, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyno changes were made, ever. thanks for the info, gentlemen. i will try all the methods mentioned and get back to you.so i ran the memtest, it passed, no errors. also ran a hard drive test, it passed those as well. it had a ton of failures on the video stress test, though.

and this is what bluescreenview found:

so this means time for a new video card, right? if so, is there a tool like the crucial RAM software that i can use to use exactly what type of video card it is, to purchase a compatible one?Hi Cobra and welcome back

What model PC do you have there is no tool like the crucial memory finder. That is only for system memory / memory sticks. Yes the video card will have memory too but that memory too but can not be replaced. The whole video card must be replaced.

Please give us the model so we can better help you find a video card. The model maybe something like Dell C521 or a HP A6400f etc
