Solve : Lost my buttons on the bottom?

Answer»

If you can't get to it with the taskbar gone.

The quickest way is to push the keys on the keyboard "windows key" + R keys that will open the run

Mike They SAID the taskbar had come BACK, so what's the PROBLEM?

Also, have a look at that screenshot; looks like they pressed F11.

It's not unknown for full screen applications to screw up and CARRY on being fullscreen anyway.

Not that they shouldn't do a malware check; one can always do a malware check, no harm in that.Good evening Veltas

Yes they did say it came back but there has to be a reason of why it disappeared. That is why I asked them to run for malware / VIRUS scans and also to do a file check because if it comes up clean there may be a corrupt windows file.

When windows 7 first came out there where may people that had this issue. With the taskbar disappearing completely and some times just the taskbar would be gone but the start button / globe would be there.

I am just tying to help the OP find out what the issue is and where it started from. Mike

Solve : HP G71 black screen upon boot, sometimes hangs?

Answer»

Hello, all.

I have a 2010 HP G71 Notebook, running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit
Lately upon startup, it would go to a silent black screen for a few minutes before loading into Windows.
Today, it's started hanging at that black screen.
It also hangs when I boot into repair mode, or a previous working setting.

I've been able to boot into Safe Mode and ran sfc/scannow, and came back with no problems.
The only way I've been able to get to my normal desktop is to do this, then restart and boot into debug mode.

Any ideas?

Other specs:

BIOS: Default
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Good evening Alien Guardian and welcome to CH

When you say it is just hangs during safemode or on a normal boot how long are you talking about?

You sure the screen is black or can you faintly see some images?

When the screen is black do you hear any of the normal window boot sounds?

Do you have any devices besides the AC charger plugged in? no USB drives / thumb drives?

Have you see or gotten any BSOD ( blue screen of death) or any error messages?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Hi, thanks for the prompt reply.

The black screen hangs indefinitely during a normal boot, now.

The screen is just a glowing black.

I can hear a faint high-pitched whirr, which is what I normally hear. I initially hear my DISKS running, but they stop when the black screen comes on.

My laptop runs on AC. No external drives are connected.

I've had no screens or messages of the sort.Good evening Alien Guardian

Thank you for the info

Have you ever cleaned out the heat sink / fan it MAYBE choking for air and shutting down.

You can use a paper clip or a tooth pick to hold the fan still while you use the cans of air just do not let the fan free spin. Just blow the air from the bottom out to the back vents and then when clean reverse going from the exhaust port into the fan.

Hope to hear from you, Mike Hello,

I did try blowing them out with canned air this morning, but to no avail.

I did just find that I had an SD card from my camera lodged pretty far into the slot (I had to pry it out). It may have gotten shoved into there by being put down wrong, but I doubt it has anything to do with the problem.Hello again

Yes they can stop it from starting the G71 have a multi boot options this includes usb floppy, usb DISC's, network booting etc. If the card is bad and stuck in slot it very well may stop it from booting

I would try to get it out. Mike

To eject the card it should push in and un-click then you should be able to take it out. I've been able to boot this desktop before with the SD card in the slot, though.Hello again

OK well then it is possible that you may have some thing else like a bad stick of memory you can test it.

When you laptop doesn't boot do you see any lights flashing on and off. One would be by the top right of the keyboard and one on the far left of the keyboard.

Also what CPU do you have a AMD or Intel sometimes there is a sticker on the right palm rest, unless you know from memory

To download and test your memory http://www.memtest86.com/ because if it is freezing even in safe mode there may be a hardware issue. Just download memtest and burn it to an ISO. download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning UTILITY (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd DRIVE is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility. If you're referring to the number and caps lock, then yes, they do flash.

I have an Intel CPU.Oh boy that is not good

That usually means the video chip solder on the MoBo is bad or the solder balls are not making contact. This can come from over heating in most cases. Oh, well, fantastic.
Would the laptop work at all if this is the case?Considering your CPU is a Intel CPU you can try one other thing

Before I get into that those lights when they flash like that it means no video signal and considering you have a G71 it may also be telling you that the LED / LCD panel is bad and not the MoBo.

To test this leave the laptop off and you can plug in another monitor into the side of the laptop and turn it on if it works than you just need a LCD replacement if it doesn't that means you would need a MoBo

Hope this works for you, Mike I'll have to try that one out tomorrow.

Thanks for the help thus far, and I'll be sure to let you know.No Problem

I really hope it works for you Mike

Solve : Cant install AdobeFlash on Samsung n150 Win7 Starter due to insuffic priviledges?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I am really hoping someone can help me. I have looked everywhere for answers and have been trying to fix this problem for a few months.

Adobe Flash player has stopped working on my Samsung n150 (win7 starter 32bit). Anytime I try to watch a video in Internet Explorer I am prompted to install Flash player. When I try to do this I am told I have insufficient priviledges when attempting to install.

I have tried downloading the program and RUNNING as admin, and I have disable anti virus, but still I cannot install flash player. I am unable to CREATE a new User control account, as it says I cannot do that with my Windows 7 starter.

Flash player works in Google Chrome. Which I downloaded along with Flash player. Chrome installed, but flash player would not.

Please help!IE USES a different version of Flash from Chrome, FF, etc.Try downloading from this link: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_11_for_Internet_Explorer&os=Windows%207. It should automatically prompt you to 'make changes to your computer' (that's the run as administrator). If it still fails, a more specific error message might help if available.

Quote from: Computer_Commando on September 09, 2012, 04:46:19 PM

IE uses a different version of Flash from Chrome, FF, etc.
FWIW, Chrome has its own separate version from all other browsers. IE has a custom flash player like chrome's staring in version IE10 (windows .
Does WIN7 prompt you for elevated privs? if not, you may have turned it off - it should ask you if you want to allow changes; just being in the priv acct. may not be enough(?) - you have to answer the prompts. I do on mine - go to control-panel and then user acct ->control settings.

Solve : Bottom of windows covered by taskbar?

Answer»

I just bought a Windows 7 netbook, and so far it works great! However, I've been having quite a bit of a problem.

All windows (yes, they're MAXIMIZED) extend to the very bottom of the screen, rather than the taskbar. So a portion of each window is blurred beyond recognition. This is ESPECIALLY noticeable when playing Minecraft in multiplayer, because the chat bar at the bottom of the screen is invisible.

How can I fix this?
Is your taskbar set to auto-hide? If it is, turn it off. If it isn't or if you don't know, set it to auto-hide and set it off again.

To access the setting:
1. Right-click the taskbar and click properties.
2. The second checkbox at the top of the screen is 'Auto-hide the taskbar'.

This has fixed some problems I've had before where the taskbar isn't handled properly.Quote from: TechnoGeek on September 10, 2012, 04:43:07 PM

No, it's not set to auto-hide.

So it's still a problem after setting auto-hide on and off again?

Another thing you can try is closing a non-maximized program, running it again and maximizing it. I THINK there's also a registry key somewhere that keeps track of window sizes that you may be able to clear; I can look that up if it COMES to it.

Solve : Card slot?

Answer»

The card SLOT on my new samsung laptop is too small for the card from my digital camera. Samsung say I need an adaptor.
I have checked PCworld and ebay, but I don't know which adaptor is right for the computer. Is there a standard adaptor for Samsung laptops?
Thank you in advance.1. What model Samusng laptop?
2. What make & model camera?

Otherwise we're just guessing.
They have external card readers available...not too expensive...and they accommodate all 4 sizes. If the laptop has a micro SD card slot, every other kind of card will be too big, and you'll have to use a USB card reader. Except if your camera uses large size SD cards then you can use an micro SD card in an adapter in your camera. The adapter fits in a regular size SD card slot. You could slide the micro card out of the adapter and stick it in your laptop slot. The adapters are very cheap.

Here are some examples of what is available.

I am with Salmon Trout / truenorth / reddevilggg. You can go to web sites like NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=69&name=Card-Readers you can get some REALLY nice ones for a whole lot cheaper.

Good LUCK with your search and let us know if you need anything, Mike Again, thank you all for your input. I know pc world is expensive, but ibought the computer there, and they should have told me about the card reader slot, as it was on my list of questions, so I was hoping for a freebie..........no such luck, they didn't even have one in stock. I have ordered an xd card reader from ebay for £2.99 should be with me in a few days. yippee............Thank you all. I shall give my question a 'tick' as soon as I am up and running.
Thanks againcard reader arrived, and is working perfectly. Thanks again to you all, EdnaGlad to have assisted.Enjoy your new device. truenorth

Solve : Shockwave Flash keeps crashing and keep losing apps in Facebook?

Answer»

Hi
New to this forum but hope someone can assist a total idiot....
I have had problems for weeks with shockwave keep crashing. I use Chrome so searched for issue and saw loads of posts about SF crashing in Chrome. I disabled plug ins as advised and re enabled ETC. I ran SCANS, ran diagnostics, troubleshooters etc etc etc so many times and restores.....
Tonight I have just lost access to loads of Facebook apps - they just won't load. I followed FB advice to restore - cleared cache (again), changed settings and so on.
I ran a vulnerability SCAN (Kaspersky) and Macromedia and SF show as issues that need fixing. Usually I click on fix it and it takes me to page to fix - not this time. Keep getting the message from Adobe site that Chrome has built in stuff and no option for a fix offered.

I ran a quick scan too - shows a keylogger?? But won't let me disinfect or quarantine.
TBH since my son left home I am hopeless. he knows PC's and always kept mine working well and sorted probs out.
So - here I am , thick as and desperate not to keep flailing around the web grabbing at things that probably make things worse.

Is there a free download that I can access that will steer me through the probs and help a novice clean up/sort their PC?

Thanks for listening
MollyGood evening Mollymoo and welcome to CH

Your best bet is to install FLASH player as a complete package from here just pick the non IE version for chrome http://www.oldapps.com/flash_player.php

Now if you have different browsers like IE and firefox etc you will need to update them as well but this should get you started

Hope this helps, please let US know how you make out. Mike

Solve : On board or LineIn Microphones are not working.?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 Laptop with Vista (OS). We have tried everything we can see to do, but have not had success. Under Recordings, the Line In Mic shows one bar of sound, but In don't think it's doing anything. The computer isn't detecting my voice when I try speach recognition. I heard the Vista had issues with the mic, but it there a way to turn it on, LineIn or Onboard?
I was working with bhanshew in chat trying to resolve this issue, I am going to summarise the troubleshooting steps we took,
1) we went into properties and confirmed that all settings were set up correctly
2) we tried attaching an external microphone to ensure internal wasn't broken
3) we ensured the microphone was not muted, we also tried muting the microphone (after reading from various sources that muting the microphone fixed the problem.
We checked all sound controller and it said it was working, after trying everything I could think of I GOT bhanshew to post here, I hope you will be able to resolve the issueGood EVENING bhanshew and welcome to CH

When you where trying different fixes are you sure that the mic PLUG is in the mic port and the same for the speakers etc? or are you using only the built in mic and speakers?

In the device manager is there any red or yellow items, if not look up top for the view then click on hidden DEVICES is any of them show any issues etc.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike

Solve : Windows 7 Wont run?

Answer»

I recently uphraded my motherboard and i had too Fash Bios it and now my pc wont start up , it gives me two options Start Normaly, or startup repair. If i choose start normaly , i get this blue screen that i cant read because it closes right away then it resets the pc. If i choose startup repair and it does not close or (REPAIR) and the screen keeps on going. I REALLY want this too work because i dont have my OP cd but i do have key for windows 7, The motherboard is a Biostar A870 and the cpu is AMD Athlon™ II X2 . I need help please ASP !!!! Good morning hellomotto09 and welcome to CH

IF I am understanding your post correctly

You had windows 7 installed and for hat ever reason replaced the motherboard then flashed the BIOS and now windows will not start correct?

Hope to hear from you soon,Mike If you replaced the mobo you need to reinstall Windows.I don't have the windows 7 cd but I do have the key Yes that's it ,you got what I was saying Mike.
Good evening hellomotto09 and welcome back

Sorry on the delay

The only way you will be able to fix this is just what I had posted and Allan had said the same thing. Once you make that big of hardware change. Windows needs to be reinstalled, but I do see in your other post that you don't have the W7 disk but you have the key / coa.

If you KNOW of someone that has the same version of windows and same bit version ask them if you can borrow it. So lets say you installed Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit than that is the version that you would need to borrow and just use you cd key /coa.

Hope this helps you if you have any questions please just let us know. Hope to hear from you soon. Mike People losing their Windows CD is a common occorunce around here...
Even those that have an "ahem" version...That's a nasty cough you have there, patio...
Sorry for the delay I got a windows disk but now the disk won't run I don't know how to reinstall when the cd doesn't boot You have to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order via the BIOS...Well i did do that but it says
"Reboot and select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot Device and press a key"
I dont know what to do Its stressing me out !!!!! On your BIOS setup, check first if the drive is recognized along with your optical drive. Make SURE all cables and power connections are well seated for the HD and cd drive also. Load system default then go to boot priority and set the CD/DVD drive as first. Save and EXIT. Do you have a SATA hard drive you currently? Where is this Win7 DVD from ? ?
It should be bootable.

Solve : Connecting tv to laptop.?

Answer»

Wonder if you could help.

I just bought a tv and can't seem to get it to work as an external monitor. When I connect both with a hdmi cable my tv doesn't respond and my laptop cannot pick it up.

On my other tv, (slightly older) it works FINE and auto detects and displays the laptops screen on the television.

When I try to detect the monitor a blank monitor appears saying "Another display not detected" and when clicked it states "Available display output on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series". On the MULTIPLE display drop down menu it suggests "no display connected; or try anyways with on: VGA". which I still cant get to work.

My Tv- http://reviews.argos.co.uk/1493-en_gb/5299397/reviews.htm
(supports 1366x768 which my laptop it set up too)

(The tv has yet to be tuned to any channels theres a problem with my aerial and I was hoping to use my laptop to watch movies for the time being - this shouldn't affect it should it?)

Help?

I have tried with 2 hdmi cables.
"- this shouldn't affect it should it?" No this is not a factor in your issue. However factors that can influence your ability to use the TV as an external monitor are compatibility with connections on the 2 UNITS. Which given both have HDMI should not be a factor. Video selection source chosen on the TV. Presumably because you have an HDMI input on the TV then that is what you should be selecting as that is what you are using. Is that what you have selected? I would also suggest trying a lower resolution on your laptop to determine if you can produce a viable picture on the TV.You don't mention the O/S on the laptop however an out of left field factor that can cause a non video result in win 7 is if the laptop has been set to "computer only" , This selection in win 7 is achieved by depressing together the windows key and "P" and selecting the desired option.truenorth
Thanks,

I am on windows 7. I have tried all of those options.

My tv connects to other things via HDMI just not either of my laptops (the other laptop is VISTA but I dont use it)

If both the laptop and TV have an HD15 [VGA] connector you can achieve "HD" resolutions over that connection. Also, other "HD" capable connections include Component [RGB] and HDSDI.

Answer»

hi to all....
with win7 .....i used the usb disk security(initial version not remember). to avoid the installations of viruses from usb it used to include an AUTORUN.inf folder which is blank and keep it as hidden file. as i updated it to version 6.2......the old autorun.inf folders cant be deleted.and if i am going to do same...i.e. remove the vaccination(this NAME is given by SPECIFIED program) it says your os does not required this action.....

how i can delete them.....
i googled for the solution and those all tell the same solution to install>enable autorun of usb> and uninstall....seems simple..

Solve : Event ID 10?

Answer»

I own an ASUS laptop computer running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I was previously was receiving a warning in the Event Viewer regarding ACPI. I went to the ASUS website and downloaded the latest BIOS. The computer is running fine no problems.

But I keep getting this Event Id 10 error stating: ACPI BIOS attempting to write to an illegal PCI operation region (0X4) contatct vendor.

This error only appear's when I wake the computer from SLEEP mode. There will be multipile entries. When I first start the computer and when I am surfing the internet this error does not appear. Only appears when coming out of sleep mode.

When I flashed the BIOS the screen message said that it was successful.

Is this something I could just disregard or is there still a problem lurking in the background.

Thank'sA lot of errors can be found at the view event viewer. Most notable and should require immediate attention are the ones labeled critical. The warning is somehow not given much importance as it will not affect system performance. I think the sleep mode function also would degrade OVERTIME eventually but as of now without any effect, I would just ignore those messages. Thank You Jason. Have a nice evening.Quote

degrade overtime
What I MEAN here is today it works flawlessly and as time pass by, the hardware and the system may not function or break the sleep mode FEATURE or cause the system to EXHIBIT freezing, blackscreen or damage other components. Nothing lasts forever. I rarely use sleep mode, maybe when transferring my laptop going from upstairs or downstairs just to save the booting time. But as much as possible, I always use the shutdown function for Windows when not in use. 1 minute or more of booting time is not that much of a wait in my case.

Solve : Programs Disappearing?

Answer»

Beginning in July with the monthly Windows patch update, I noticed that my Flash player NEEDED to be reinstalled after every restart of my system. A tthe time, it was just the Flash player, and it was s two minute fix once a WEEK when I restarted my computer so it was no big deal. Additionally, any NEW software that I installed after that time also disappeared after any reboot. Now it's a big deal.

I'm running Windows 7 on a computer less than a year old. I am the only user, and all of the permissions appear to be set to give me COMPLETE access to everything as the administrator. When I install anything, a window will pop up asking if I am giving this program permission to change my hard DRIVE, and I always answer yes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.Could it be you are infected as programs recently installed disappears? What are these softwares you recently just put and did not appear (shortcut icons)?Adobe Flash Player was the first on ethat I noticed. Then I upgraded to Adobe CS6 and I upgraded my Firefox, and hav ethe same issues with those. I use Norton 360 for protection, but I can't get that to open up and run a scan. Everthing says that it is opeating and current, but I can't open it up.If Norton won't run you are most likely infected...

Solve : Vista reinstalll did not work?

Answer» HELLO All,
I wanted to reinstall Vista on my Acer notebook to have a new system. I had the Two Acer Vista O.S. Disks however when I got to install disk Two I found out it was the same as disk One as I did not make these Revovery disks. Now the only option the Notebook is giving me is to be able to start up with the Recovery\O.S. Disk One, which it goes through the process of installing untill it asks for disk Two, which I have to shut off then. I TRIED F2 and F12 to change the boot order as I have a USB DVD Player hooked up and that does not make any difference. Also when the system starts I get a message that the BOOTMGR is missing and press Ctrl Alt Del to restart. This error does not happen with the Recovery disk One. I also tried using ULTIMATE Boot CD to no help. Any COMMENTS welcome, Thanks DelIt might be the boot sector causing that. When installing, don't format but choose 'leave intact & intall it into different location'Good evening del rey and welcome to CH

Most Acer recovery CD / DVD's are sets of 2. But on too your question disk 1 starts the re-ghosting / image and disk 2 will have the drivers and software and the rest of the OS install.

Your only option if you do not have a complete set you will need to get your hands on another OS that is the exact same version of what you have and then download the drivers from acer for your PC and use your COA / Key on your PC to do the install.

So if you have a COA for windows vista home premium 32 bit than that is the disk you need to borrow. Your COA key is tied to the version on windows. The COA will look simular to the attachment your key will be 25 digits long and has 5 groups of 5.

Is it bad that I only visit when I need help?
With that said there is some issues occurring with my laptop that I am lost on.

The last thing I remember my monitors blacked out (2) and the audio in the background was still playing. I PROCEEDED to shut down my computer and I was sucked into a seemingly endless startup repair loop.
There has not been many new things going on with my computer except 2 points.

were not installing properly. Malicious software tool downloaded and started to install only to hit 35% and quit configuring. Rollup for ActiveX Killbits downloaded but never went past 0% installing. The 3 other patches for windows 7 64 based SYSTEM never downloaded. I Did not have any problems updating on my other machine.

Secondly I started using a 4gb flash drive for a speed boost.(Also on the second machine.)

I tried running a clean install, but I got a 0x80070017

This is so frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.Good evening frommetononame

Any time I have run into this it ENDS up being a bad install disk and or a bad usb thumb drive.
When this has happened when I am setting up a system i have copied the files off the DVD to the hard drive and tried doing the install and have also tried doing the install off the USB drive etc but the end result with the W7 DVD media being bad I had to get it EXCHANGED for another one.

Hope this helps, Mike I might try booting the clean install from a usb.
I would really like to know what caused my start up problems to begin with. At least that way I might know if I am running my laptop with faulty gear. Thanks for the advice though.

Update: Its expanding the files as I type. I feel Like a NOOB having to resort to a clean install. This laptop is my life(sad I know). I think I should take some sort of computer education to be better prepared.

Update2: Installed and ready to go... get some drivers. Thx for the help Ill see you again when my laptop burst into flames.

Solve : Windows7 booting problem?

Answer»

Ok, so my computer was having problems loading, and kept giving me an error screen and shutting off. I brought it to Best Buy where I bought it and they said that their warranty had expired so it would cost 200 dollars before they could fix it, but they did tell me it was a software PROBLEM. I bought the computer three months AGO. I do not want to pay 200 to get it fixed. So I went on the TOSHIBA ONLINE help website and it told me to restore the computer to factory settings. Which I have now done. Now the problem is that it is telling me there is no bootable device and that I must enter a boot disk. Please help!

Ok so I went on the Toshiba website and it said I was supposed to make recovery media first? Which I didn't? So if I order the recovery media online that should fix the problem correct?Only a 90 day warranty on a Toshiba from Best Buy? Doesn't sound right to me.

Toshiba Notebooks 800-457-7777I would suggest you borrow a Windows 7 disc (must be same type - Home Premium/Pro;etc 32bit or 64bit) and set bios to boot from DVD/CD drive. If you have your product key, this is the cheapest and easiest WAY. Choose "repair" when prompted.

Solve : Mapping drives on multiple user computers using windows 7?

Answer»

Hi, just found this place and I am hoping someone will be able to help.

I NEED to setup a mapped drive on 36 computers connected on a single network in a schools computer lab. Each machine will have up to 20 STUDENTS as users. The drive will be on the teachers computer and used for picking up assignments from the students.

I have tried several methods and they all have given problems. Either the drives don't map for some users will map only after restarting.

Is there a simple way that does not need me to create script for every one of the machines?

Looking forward to hearing from the experts.

Thanks in advance.Good evening sir2u and welcome to CH

I do not know if the class room is it a small work group set up or are they logging into the school domain?

If it is going to be set up in a OU that all PC's will use this will help you http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231287 if this is not for a OU and it is a work group set set that can be done with a simple script.

Hope this helps, Mike

Hello hartbeatmr,

Thank you for your reply.

The way the lab is setup right now is basically 40 machines connected to a single router through 3 hubs. We are planning on making major changes in the whole system at the end of the year but right now we just need to get by without to much FUSS and sweat. There is no server or domain. The windows network setting is set to Workplace. The biggest problem is when the students get into the networks they do stupid things like "losing" assignment.

The simplest solution I have found so far is to put shortcuts to the target drive folders into each machines public documents folder. At least they can't say that they can't find the place until someone deletes the shortcut for fun.

Mapping the drives would at least ensure that the next user had the drive available even if the previous user disconnected it. At least that is the THEORY behind Mapped drives.

I have done a lot of searching to try to solve this problem but without luck so far.

Thanks again for your attention

Solve : Windows 7 problem?

Answer»

The pc wont boot, it has this OxcOOOOOe9 error/status on the screen, it also says a removable storage device could have been unplugged while in use, the owner said she had dropped the pc, can you help.

The pc is a Toshiba, O,S, windows 7 Can you boot to safemode and try running a startup repair? Unless the HARD drive is damaged or unrecoverable you could try a repair but if there are documents you would need to back-up first, try using Puppy Linux. See this Toshiba link/thread also.Try removing all power including the battery...
Then remove and re-seat the RAM sticks, the HDD and if applicable the DVD drive.
Wait 5 mins and power back up.This can be caused by all SORTS of problem, this symptom is like saying you have a runny nose it could be about a thousand different causes. If she dropped the computer, it could be that the hard drive crashed which can give a blue screen, it could also be that the ram because unseated which would also cause a blue screen.

Try booting from an Ubuntu live cd (ubuntu.com). If you can GET all the way to the desktop, you can be pretty sure it's not the memory.

Can you boot into safe mode? When the pc is switched on the message comes up strait AWAY in the Boot manger, it then says to chose either startup repair or start windows normally, tried both get the but it wont boot, I THINK she has damaged the hard drive.

I will try some of the things you have suggested and thank you all for your helpI would enter recovery console and do chkdsk /r

(On XP anyways. I know it seems stupid, but I am not sure if it is the same on 7)

Solve : dual screens?

Answer»

how can i create dual screens on my computer. am RUNNING windows 7?That would DEPEND solely on what video adapter you currently have...so take some time to post the specs of what's in that PC...I you want to have TWO screens at half size thats easy.
Open two CH pages, press windows sign and left arrow for one, press windows sign and right arrow for the other.

Hope thats what you mean if the video output has another video port, just plug in another cable to another monitor. windows should pick it up right away. in display settings you can setup the 2nd monitor.

if there is no second video output you'll NEED to buy a graphics splitter. It depends on the computer.

Most of the time you will have to add an internal graphics card with 2 video ports on it. Make sure the graphics card supports dual monitors. You can pick one up online for as low as $30. There are many different kinds of card, so you will need to KNOW the specs on the computers motherboard. They have not returned since the 1st post...

Solve : DISKPART UNIQUEID Error. Windows reports my GPT Disk as MBR. How do I fix it ??

Answer»

I have this error when I launch CMD.EXE with full administrator privileges and then run DISKPART :-
Quote

DISKPART> UNIQUEID DISK ID=21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D

The specified identifier is not in the correct format.
Type the identifier in the correct format:
in hexadecimal form for an MBR disk or as a GUID for a GPT disk.
DISKPART correctly obeys me without any errors with MBR operations such as
DISKPART> UNIQUEID DISK ID=000FA832
and
DISKPART> UNIQUEID DISK ID=000FA830

I am working on a secondary non-system HDD that is GPT style and has been in use as such for a few years.
600 GB WDC WD6401AALS-00L3B2
I booted into a Boot Flash Drive based on SysLinux but after a couple of seconds it failed to present a menu and crashed back into a BIOS Restart
and I then allowed a normal Windows Start-Up.

The consequence of an abnormal RESTART into Windows is that it no longer sees a GPT GUID ID but an MBR Hexadecimal ID and now considers :-
the first 25 GB NTFS partition to be RAW,
and the main 500 GB NTFS partition has become unallocated space.

A Data Recovery tool has done an almost (but not quite) perfect job on the 250 GB of files that remain in this unallocated space,
and I have another Partition Recovery tool that promises to work on both MBR and GPT disks.

I am simply trying to undo the damage and make Windows correctly recognise this GPT disk,
in the hope that both the recovery tools will have better prospects of complete success if Windows is not telling them they are dealing with an MBR disk.

Are there any alternatives to DISKPART UNIQUEID which I could try ?

I looked at the possibility of initialising the disk as GPT, but that seems to require cleaning the disk,
which would avoid confusing the tools,
but might also put my files out of their reach.
I would welcome any alternatives.

N.B.
My best guess of what went wrong :-
My drives are connected by SATA and Microsoft have never understood or fixed Windows to properly work with SATA.
According to a KB????? their intention was that Windows would report the drive on SATA channel "n" as being Drive "n"
They failed with XP and then VISTA and WIN 7, and I doubt WIN 8 is any better.
My OCZ SSD is connected to SATA Channel 0, but it almost never is seen as Disk 0.

On my system a Power UP START will every time result in
Drive 0 = WDC HDD
Drive 1 = SamSung HDD
Drive 2 = OCZ SSD

A RESTART results in either
Drive 0 = OCZ SSD
Drive 1 = WDC HDD
Drive 2 = SamSung HDD
Or a RESTART results in
Drive 0 = WDC HDD
Drive 1 = OCZ SSD
Drive 2 = SamSung HDD

I am guessing that the Linux Abort led to yet another chaotic Windows RESTART which caused Windows to replace the WDC UNIQUEID with the Samsung value.
I KNOW FOR SURE that Windows restarted and the WDC HDD had been allocated the same UNIQUEID as the SamSung HDD has always used,
and so Windows declared a Disc Signature Conflict and promptly put the Samsung HDD "offline",
and then it told me I had no Pagefilesys and it CREATED one for me on the SSD
(I had moved my Pagefile away from the SSD and into what was now unallocated space on the WDC HDD.)

I now have the Samsung HDD back on-line and have reduced Pagefile.sys to a tolerable size,
and now my focus is on restoring normal operation of the WDC HDD.

Alan
Firsts of all, it is hard to give a clear answer to your problem.
Here is a REFERENCE that may help others reading this.
I assume you already know all about it:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/gg463525.aspx
Windows and GPT FAQ

IMHO mixing OSs on one drive brings unspeakable terror. Unless the drive is MBR. Thanks for the link, unfortunately it does not help me.

My devastated HDD was GPT because there appeared to be no reason that required it to be MBR.
It has not been used for running any operating system, other than Pagefile.sys was moved from C:\ on the Samsung HDD to E:\ on this WDC HDD,

Linux has never been on my computer apart from when it has run from a Boot Flash Drive.

I am currently recovering files from unallocated space and if there is no way to change the ID back back to a GUID,
then I hope that EaseUS® Partition Master Professional (Free GAOTD a few days ago) will recover my partitions without being confused by the lack of a GUID.
But first before I lose the whole thing I am trying my luck with Data Recovery tools.

I think that when I am satisfied that I have salvaged all possible information I will clean the disk and start again.
Many data recovery and partition recovery tools are not suitable for GPT,
thus MBR discs have to be better for recovery.

I have seen that GPT are claimed to be more fault tolerant,
and that if the beginning of the Disk was damaged it would not destroy access to all partitions.
In practice when searching for solutions to this problem I have found many Topics and Posts about GPT partition problems,
BUT I have never seen anything other than a total loss of ALL partitions.
One can hope that a GPT disk might survive a problem that would damage an MBR disk,
BUT I know that when there is a disk problem there are more tools that are better able to deal with MBR rather than GPT.

I think that in a few days this Disk is going to be cleaned and then re-used as an MBR disk.
If anyone thinks this a bad decision then please state your reasons before I take action

Regards
Alan
My personal recommendation theist you buy another Hard drive. But the idea is not only mine, in fact t others on this forum recommended that long before me.

By having separate drive for different systems, you avoid some of the issues you have found.

Some, or many, versions of Linux do not support the GPT.

Vesta, Windows 7 and 8 default to GPT. Windows XP does not. Except the 64 bit version. You must not t use XP utilizes to alter the hard drive definition area. Even if is seems to work.

This Desktop I have here now has Windows 7 64 bit and XP 32 bit in a dual boot. The only changers I make to the partition size and boot information p is with utilities certified to run under Windows 7.

Here is a commendation from another forum
http://www.redmondpie.com/best-free-partition-manager-for-windows-7/

May I suggest you never use any Linux tool on a Windows 7 or 8 hard drive.
Never Never.
Thanks

I take that as a vote against GPT and in favour of MBR.

I already use Partition Wizard,
both the version that runs under Windows,
and also the stand-alone self-contained Linux version that rescued all 6 partitions on my Laptop several years ago

To Secure Erase my OCZ SSD I now use a Linux ISO supplied by OCZ for this purpose.
OCZ also supply a Windows tool for the same purpose,
but unfortunately a "standard" version of WinPE (as built by Macrium Reflect) is not able to support that tool,
and I do not have the time to learn how to extract the requisite "extras" from a 2 GB WAIK.

I have used the YUMI bootloader in the past with no problems.

On this occasion the flash drive never got off the launchpad.
It failed to display its internal menu of ISO's - it simply spent a second or two loading and then it crashed/froze.

Windows consistently allocated the same incorrect sequence of Disk numbers to the SSD and HDD's upon a power up.
BUT upon a Restart there is no consistency.
I think this is another example of a typical Windows Race Hazard.
Power-up will present the BIOS and Windows with all the hardware fully reset and the HDD's at a standstill.
A restart will find the HDD's at full speed and ready to go, whilst perhaps the SSD is still busy with close-down housekeeping,
I have also in the past experienced Serial Port interface issues where some components only experienced a "hard restart" via Power-Down,
and a simple Restart failed to re-initialise the Serial Port.

I am guessing that before the HDD's were up to speed the system had crashed back from Linux into the BIOS achieving a very early Restart,
and during the unusual chaos Windows read the Samsung Disk Signature and "corresponding" Disk Number,
and subsequently it perceived the WDC as being the same Disk Number and having a different Signature so it over-wrote with the Signature read from the Samsung.

Regards
Alan
First: a GPT disk ALWAYS has an MBR. It's called a Protective MBR, And includes Partition information, just as a Basic MBR Disk setup would. GPT puts the Primary GUID Partition table immediately afterwards, the GUID Partition Tables themselves after that, and then the partitions. the Backup GPT Data is placed after all Partitions.

DISKPART> UNIQUEID DISK ID=000FA832

DiskPart might require the customary usage of braces on each end of the GUID. You can use Device Manager and select the properties of the disk drive in question, and then populate the Volumes tab.

Booting with GPT Requires EFI. the Protective GPT MBR has an ID of Hexadecimal EE. a EFI BIOS does not use this identifier, As far as I'm aware, to determine it's boot process; it is simply a protective MBR so that the GPT Table won't be overwritten. My understanding is that it can be practically erased with no ill effect, since the EFI knows where to look.

This sounds more like the syslinux boot did something cruel and unnatural. There is nothing abnormal about the windows Restart in this case. The only difference between when it ran before and after would be that sysLinux crashed in between. a GPT Disk can be used as an MBR Drive, it's just limited to 2TB Partitions and 4 Primary Partitions total in that case. From the sounds of it, the MBR Information was out-dated. I'm not sure what a Flash Boot would do to cause this.

Quote

Well all you've offered is the Diskpart information- or rather, it not letting you use a specific ID format. I can't find any documentation on the proper format, but it might be as simple as omitting braces. Device Manager is probably a better source of this information (well, it's the same information, really).

Quote
My drives are connected by SATA and Microsoft have never understood or fixed Windows to properly work with SATA.
SATA Drives have worked perfectly fine using the generic SATA support since Vista. XP has never had built-in SATA support and always requires third-party drivers to be slipstreamed. The Exception is that some manufacturer drivers- and presumably some that were included with Vista/7/ (and possibly) 8, have some issues dealing with very large drives, but that doesn't seem to be an issue here (very large being >2TB)

Quote
My OCZ SSD is connected to SATA Channel 0, but it almost never is seen as Disk 0.
Conversely, All my drives have always been identified as the Disk # of their Channel Number. This could be a BIOS issue, or some sort of remapping feature through the BIOS, or it could even be the usage of IDE-Compatible mode.

Quote
I am guessing that the Linux Abort led to yet another chaotic Windows RESTART which caused Windows to replace the WDC UNIQUEID with the Samsung value.
The UniqueID information is in the ESCD, which is read-only after the BIOS initially populates it with data from it's POST inspection. The actual Drive information is requested from the drive firmware (via the ATA IDENTIFY command).

If we are talking about three different drives, this actually changes quite a lot. the usage of GPT or MBR partitioning is only per-drive, not System-wide. My understanding is that the SATA Channels given back for drives can be inconsistent if the BIOS is in ATA-Compatible mode- but generally those assignments are only known by the BIOS- the Controller then emulates two ATA Channels.

Side Note: GPT is not and has not been the default partitioning scheme on any OS. There really is no reason to use GPT unless you happen to be hitting one of the limits of MBR (needing more than 4 primary partitions on a disk and having partitions larger than 2TB)

It could have been a bug with the particular AHCI Driver in use. Some AHCI Driver and hardware combinations have issues in certain situations. Your previous session might have triggered the bug and you only coincidentally attempted to boot SysLinux, which failed as a result of inconsistent disk structures when investigating it's hardware environment.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table#Operating_System_support_of_GPT

The above is only for people that read. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 16, 2013, 10:15:44 AM

I am sure I supplied system specs before I started this topic, but now when I click I just see a javascript error. so here are my details

OCZ SSD 59 GB (MBR)
WDC HDD 600 GB (GPT)
SamSung HDD 931 GB (MBR)

I think I remember seeing that 64 bit XP had SATA capability, but I could be wrong.

I forget the number but Microsoft definitely published a KB nnnnnn stating that they intended Windows to allocate Disk numbers according to the SATA port numbers,
but admitting that they were unable to ensure this.

I have had this desktop for 2 or 3 years,
but the OCZ SSD was only added 11 months ago.

I forget the details but the original HDD's were displaced to SATA ports 1 and 2 so the SSD could be on port 0,
and the BIOS needed an AHC? change to enable the delivery of TRIM commands.

I tried curly braces and that failed with the same error.
This was my modified attempt
DISKPART> UNIQUEID DISK ID={EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7}

Was that the format you intended ?

Found this:
Disk drive numbers may not correspond as expected to the SATA channel numbers when you install Windows on a computer that has multiple SATA or RAID disks

Quote
This problem occurs because drives are enumerated in the ORDER in which they are presented to the operation system by the system BIOS.

Quote
I think I remember seeing that 64 bit XP had SATA capability, but I could be wrong.
XP x64 required a separate SATA Driver to work with AHCI connected Hard Disks (without compat mode, that is).

Only idea I really had for this was the braces, which you got my intent for. I don't use GPT, myself (don't see much point) so can't speak from experience. I do know that using a new File System or Disk schematic can be a bad idea- NTFS was a good example of this. Thanks for all the information.

I now have an idea of the obstacles to be overcome, and will desist from attempting the impossible.

I have used Data Recovery tools that have located 460 GB of files that were in :-
the small NTFS partition that is now RAW;
plus the large archive partition that is now "Unallocated".
I am fresh out of spare HDD's to receive 460 GB of recovered files.
I have selected and successful recovered 45 GB that are relevant to the future,
and am now looking at 415 GB that is pending to see if there is anything more that is worth having.

My next stage is to evaluate Partition Recovery tools - but only for the purpose of learning.
I am definitely intending to conclude by cleaning the HDD and initialising as MBR and not GPT.

Again, thanks.

Solve : Can't hot swap USB devices?

Answer»

I can't hot swap USB devices. The are recognized when I restart, though.

Vista Home Premium 64 bit
AMD Phonom 9500 quad core processor 2.2GHz
What type of USB devices are we talking about here? How are you removing them?truenorthI only have a limited number of ports, so i have to periodically unplug my headset to use, say, a thumb drive. I try to eject the components by clicking the icon in the task bar at the bottom right, or whatever it's called but the only thing ever in there is Mass Storage Unit. I have no idea what that is. A mass storage unit is a very general term which can apply to flash drives/usb connected floppy drives/even optical drives connected by usb connection can be so denoted as well as card readers. However most often when such a depiction is stated it also names the device IE: Cruzer storage device (for a Cruzer brand flash drive). However given that you should be visibly able to KNOW what if anything is plugged into a USB port at any TIME what it is referencing should be apparent (unless there are multiple devices). However again whatever they are should be specifically stated such as a wireless dongle or whatever. The icon you are refering to is the "safely remove" icon and must be used before removing a usb device. If this is not done in the case of flash drives it may cause loss of data and/or rendering the device unusable for the future. The aspect of limited usb ports can be overcome in a variety of ways.If the card slots EXIST as available you can ADD a PCI card (or other) that will provide additional USB ports on the rear of the computer (desktop) or a USB expander which is a device that plugs into an existing USB ports and provides multiples of what it is plugged into often 4. If memory serves me a single usb port can be expanded up to 128 additional ports. So there is really no need to be limited by a small number of existing computer USB ports. The cost of the expanders is negligible. You should try to find a powered one if you can as they are more efficient that non powered ones.If you cannot get the icon data to indicate that you can safely remove the device (this can happen) you should perform a normal shutdown of the computer and when achieved then remove the device.Hope this helps to advance your use and enjoyment of your computers.truenorthIt's been a long time since I posted to this thread. In the meantime, the resolution I found was that I updated the chipset driver. So now the device appears in the list of usb connected devices--one problem taken care of. Now I am unable to eject the peripheral, but that is perhaps another problem for another thread. I use Safely Eject USB...a TINY little app that works better than the built in Windows one...

Here Ya Go...Actually the ejection problem seems to be solved as well. Cheers!

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor says that I may EXPERIENCE issues running the program Bluetooth stack for Windows by Toshiba on Windows 7. What can I do?Check the Toshiba site for Win7 drivers for that model #...if they are available then it's just a precautionary NOTE by MS.I got it from the Fujitsu website. Thanks.

Solve : Universal OEM ISO??

Answer»

Hello;

First I must start off by saying my intentions are not to Pirate software from Microsoft.

Backstory :

Quote

I am an entry level technician that works at a "BIG box" retail repair store that shall not be named. On a daily basis, I have to restore the Operating Systems of, on average, 3-5 units per day.

Naturally restore media is going to be misplaced, fail, or clients will not create any if the MFG choses not to ship the unit with pre-burned recovery discs.

When this happens, it usually is as easy as reading the license off the COA and using an OEM if XP, or vanilla retail DVD if Vista/7.

Sometimes the COA is removed or unreadable (faded), in which case the client/owner of the unit is contacted, and informed that genuine OEM DVDS are needed. Sometimes this goes over well, and sometimes we end up dealing with a very p***ed-off client. Even worse is when the MFG will not provided/sell duplicate OEM recovery media (HP will no longer provide media for XP or Vista).

What I WOULD like to do is create a Windows 7 Install ISO that contains all the necesary files to activate just as an OEM DVD would activate.

As I understand it, an OEM DVD of windows 7 requires 3 things:

  • An SLP string stored in BIOS unique to the MFG/Version of Windows to be activated.
  • An SLIC key (in place of a CD key) unique to the MFG/Version of Windows to be activated.
  • SLP certificate file that must match the SLP string stored in BIOS.

If I were able to add all 3 requirements for all the major MFGs (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc etc.) could a Windows 7 ISO exist that would automatically LEGITMATLEY activate the APPROPRIATE OS that the original/genuine OEM install media would?

I just want a DVD I can use to restore the OS of any mainstream manufactured PC and not have to worry about activation if the COA is removed. It would also be nice to not have to enter the Key every time a client is irresponsible with their recovery media

Ofcourse if the machine is not a MFG'ed machine (read:CUSTOM build) or you tried installing Ultimate instead of Home Premium, I would not expect nor want it ot activate.

Please let me know if this is possible. It would simplify my life EXTREMELY, and I have no maluicious purpose or intent.

Thank you,
ZeroByte

P.S. The ISO I am using is a Genuine Windows 7 retail ISO with the ei.cfg removed to allow selection of the appropriate Win7 version. In it's simplest DEFINITION what you are wanting to do is in violation of the MS EULA...
No assistance here...sorry.

Solve : How to move photos back to "C" Drive?

Answer»

I have somehow (ACCIDENTALLY) moved my photos from the "C" DRIVE into a SYSTEM FOLDER. I cannot attach them to an e-mail from this location. How can I move them back to the "C" Drive, so that I can attach them to an e-mail? I'm using Windows 7 on an e-machines laptop. ***(I accidentally posted this twice, but the FIRST post did not include the Windows 7 info)***Just move them as you would any other file. Are you having a problem doing that?I'll remove your duplicate post...meanwhile what system folder did you move them to ? ?
Right clik on any of them and select "move to" and point it to where you want in the drop down box.
You may want to create a desktop folder called Pics or something else...they can always be relocated later.May I suggest the OP try to sort files by type?
And maybe use copy rather than move.If they are in a Windows System folder copy would not be a good choice...

recently,my computer got bricked, and as my emachine with windows 7 pre installed,i had to use my dads disk.i typed in my product key and W7 reinstalled back to my computer.this had been fine for about a month until i started GETTING that popup, claiming that your windows 7 key is invalid-however,it was rather ANNOYING but everything ran smothly, and i was still getting updates, right up until today, when at about 8:40 or so,windows notified me one last time that i had to activate, then the desktop backround went BLACK,and well,it is now officialy not geniune.is there some way that i can get the old data from the currupt version of w7 so i can get the new one genuine again?
-note the c:/ drive- name was branded by emachine, the makers of my model, however since the installation of the new w7, it has been renamed with the company its hired by,ACER.
-not sure if this has to do with anything but thought it might help

btw,i forgot to mention its 64 bit,and currantly stuck at build 7601note also seemed to have no properties that defined its id as an emachine computer,i even had to install the broadcom internet drives by usbThe only reason this would occur is if the version you re-installed did NOT match the original installed version...
That or your network connection dropped when it was being verified.
MS has an 800# for authentication issues.

P.S. Your old data is gone as you re-installed...sorry.hey,thanks for the help i guess l can try and explain my situation to microsoft....it shouldent be that hard

Solve : Slow download speeds?

Answer»

I am trying to LEGALLY download a game from online, i say legally as i dont WANT you to think im downloading dodgy files. My problem is, ive checked my broadband and im getting good results with every test, ive phoned my supplier up and gotten good results but when i try and download ANYTHING im downloading at 20-50 kb/s. I was wondering if this is a fault with my computer? I am connected through wired connection so it isnt wireless problem. How can i clear anything that might be slowing this down?If the ISP says your speeds are up to snuff chances are the slowdown is on the game server's end...It isnt just that, ive tested it downloading other games, and other files, but its all the same, im reaching a max of 50kb/s and down to 0.1 kb/s with anything i try and download. Its starting to frustrate meWhat browser are you using and have you tried others? Do you have a similar problem with other aspects of SENDING or receiving over the WEB such as hotmail? truenorthIm downloading it Via torrent as that is usually most PROFICIENT for me, but i have also tried direct downloading it. Have tried Google chrome, mozzila firefox, and GOD forbid, internet explorer. All of my internet is slowed down, downloading, browsing, streamingIs this a wireless router ? ?
Your neighbors may be stealing your bandwidth...Do you have access to another computer that you can use in your environment (perhaps a friend's or neighbor's) just to ensure that it is not isolated to just your computer?truenorth Patio it is indeed wireless but it is password protected and i change the password regularly, truenorth, i have tested it on my brothers laptop, wireless and wired, he also gets terrible speeds. Thanks for tryin t help guys, if one of you can find me a solution, ill love you foreverI would ask your ISP to either check your router?modem or send you another to try.truenorthThat was one of my first questions but aparantly there is no problems with the router? He told me to phone back in a few days if the problems keeps going and he would send another, but i think i might just change ispUnless other reasons exist for you to terminate your relationship with them i would give them a chance to do this " He told me to phone back in a few days if the problems keeps going and he would send another," truenorthI agree fully, i didnt mean right this second, but this is the third time ive had to phone them about this and they have never been able to help

Solve : What is BT Port??

Answer»

It is listed as a device by the Windows7 Upgrade Advisor Report, which also said there is update software for using this device on Windows 7. I can't find the update anywhere, whether Toshiba or Fujitsu. Maybe it is listed under a software name that I'm not familiar of. That's why I want to know what a BT Port is - whether it is sound or video or what. Pls help. Bluetooth. Your particular model computer may not actually have it. When the maker creates the factory software load for new models they include everything that either is AVAILABLE or may be available in that particular model anywhere in the world, however in some areas a particular model is sold without Bluetooth. For example the Toshiba 745 sold in the US comes without a Bluetooth card or antenna.

Probably. Have you tried using Bluetooth?
The bluetooth WORKED with my OEM VISTA Home BASIC. I want to make sure I can handle all probable compatibility issues before I upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. I don't want any nasty surprises, if possible. Then search the manuf. site and make sure the PC has all available Win7 Drivers before upgrading...
If they do may as well DLoad then all now and burn them to CD or a thumb drive. It doesn't sound as if you will have any nasty surprises.

Thank you so much for the help.

Solve : How fast is Windows 7 boot up compare to Windows XP?

I have Windows XP SP3 and it is fast and TAKES only 3.5GB of hard drive space.
How fast is Windows 7 boot up and operation compare to Windows XP if the same PC were used?

On my Dell desktop, Windows 7 is faster than XP. It is a dual boot.
Why would this be important to you?
Why would this be important to you?

I know that Microsoft will stop support for Windows XP in April 2014 and eventually I will have to use Windows 7 if I wanted to run the newer software and I don't like Windows 7 because like Vista it is bloatware (it takes 16 GB of hard drive).man just get spare storage space, pretty easy to doQuote from: floydo97 on February 14, 2013, 06:16:04 AM

I know that Microsoft will stop support for Windows XP in April 2014

This does by no means mean XP will all of a sudden stop functioning...
I still have a dual boot PC with Win98 and Win2K on it as some of my clients still use it on their small business PC's....Boot time is for making coffee anyways.Depends on the hardware. Machines built for XP, in most cases, struggle or cannot run Vista or 7. Machines Built for Vista or 7 are underutilized by Windows XP.

Quote from: Linh on February 13, 2013, 09:03:13 PM
I don't like Windows 7 because like Vista it is bloatware (it takes 16 GB of hard drive).
If that is your only reason, I have to say it's a rather weak one. I can understand reasons based on disliking or not liking a new UI setup- but this is simply silly.

A Typical Hard Drive in 2001 was 10 to 20GB. XP Clean Install is 1.5GB. It uses about 7% to 15% of the disk space.
A Typical Hard Drive in 2008 was around 250GB. Win7 Clean install is 6GB. it uses about 2% of the disk space.

I'm sure you can understand my confusion. If you really need that 5GB of storage space, you have bigger problems than "OS Bloatware" like... storing too much crap on your hard disk, for example.

Intel and Microsoft and the hardware makers have moved forward. New PCs boot fast and have lots of HD space.

If a small , low-cost , quick boot Personal Digital Assistant is what you want, get an an DROID smartphone. Or an Apple iPhone, if cost does not matter much.

No sarcasm intended. People are now buying smartphones rather than PCs. At the last CONSUMER Electronics show, it was all about things you pout in your pocket or hang on the wall.
Last month:
http://mindfieldlive.com/2013/01/15/ces-show-underlines-smartphone-dominance/

I Was OK with Windows 2000. But MS did not keep up the C++ library for W2K.

Edit: Forgot to mention. I and writing this non my Windows 7 64 bit D Dell Desktop. Big overkill, but I never have to wait for anything. And this desktop cost less than my old XP laptop. Which I still use. Sometimes.
IMHO you can keep on with XP as long as you wish. If you like it, that is enough resin. You don't have to keep up with everybody.
Quote from: Linh on February 13, 2013, 09:03:13 PM

Stop support, yes. Windows XP will continue to operate just fine though. No need to update if it works for you. They will not force you to upgrade. Windows 7 doesn't have as much of the bloat as Vista does. A clean install for Windows 7 is only about 6GB, depending on options and not including the page file or hibernation file. I know Microsoft lists that Windows 7 needs 16GB of space, but that's just to allow room for the other things ASIDE from the installation (page file, hibernation file, future updates, etc.) as the installation will GROW over time.

As for boot times, you have to also take in mind that a system designed for XP and a system designed for 7 are going to be different. Boot XP on a system for XP could take 30 seconds. Booting 7 on a system for 7 could also take 30 seconds. However, booting 7 on a system with specs for XP could take a very long time.

It's not that Windows 7 is bloated, but technology moves forward. Everything hardware is bigger and better and faster so software moves to use that more powerful hardware that's available.

Solve : multiple computer issues. Blue screen memory dump, Graphic issues and more?

Answer»

Hello all,

Im currently experiencing multiple computer issues, some more serious than other but could be possibly linked?
I built my computer just under a year ago and began with the problem of the computer not retaining the graphic card driver. as in i have to re-install it every time i restart the computer.
the next issue came in the form of a blue screen which mentions a memory dump. This has got progressively worse (blue screen) and my computer is now running really slow to add to the problems.
So basically NEEDS major help.
i first thought it could be RAM power issues as ive heard the blue screen is linked sometimes with that and the slow computer would also indicate this but after checking, it is recieveing the corect amount of power.
My computer stats are as followed:

Operating System: WINDOWS 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
system Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: Z68AP-D3
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
ocessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 12288MB RAM (Kingston ddr3 1600)

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
Display Memory: 4050 MB
Dedicated Memory: 978 MB
Shared Memory: 3072 MB

PCU: antec true power 650w

Can anyone help. Its really starting to effect my Uni work and just need to get this fixed.
Cheers all.
Josh

I'd start by making a bootable thumb drive or (cd or dvd ) with memtest86 on it and run the systems memory through its paces. A bad memory stick or memory that has issues when paired up with ANOTHER but operate fine alone can be the cause of these issues. Run memtest86 for at least 3 passes, this might take a while but should point out memory issues if those are causing this.

Also look in event log of windows os under management and look for repeat errors and write them down and share here. You may not have the correct vid driver also...no logical reason it wouldn't be retained...and i can't think of ever HEARING that symptom...aaahhh the blue screen of death, yes i had that happen to me for quite sometime, and went for a full system restore-very dodgy, but in the end i had a fully operational, healthy computer,i mean it does cut to blue screen like once a month now,but not as often as it did before.just a handy suggestion, always shut it down properly, never put it to sleep or hibernate it,as this puts enourmous strain on the endurence of the hard drives storing all that data for so long, this makes the computer laggy and sluggish over a long period of timeFeel free to ignore the above postQuote from: floydo97 on February 14, 2013, 06:12:37 AM

Solve : Upgrading Dell Vostro 1700 laptop for job opportunity?

Answer»

HI! Please help. I know nothing about computer hardware etc.. just how to use one. I have a Dell 1700 Vostro laptop WINDOWS Vista Ultimate with an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU [emailprotected] (2CPUs) with 3838MB RAM the company I WOULD like to work with requires a dual core processor with a speed equal to or greater than 1.8GHZ and 2GB of RAM.
Is is possible to upgrade my laptop to their requirements? Approximately how much would it cost and is it WORTH it?
Thank you.I'd buy a laptop that meets or exceeds the requirements if it was a job that was a good RETURN on investment. Some laptops can take upgrades, but its best to have a laptop that was designed to run the faster CPU to avoid issues with heat disipation etc. Laptops are cheap these days and you should be able to find a used dual core meeting 1.8Ghz and 2GB RAM for around $200 or less. I'd go with a new laptop myself if it was for mission critical work, nothing would be worse than thinking your all set to go and having a computer get you fired when it cant work properly.Check any documentation that came with you computer or manufacturers website to see if you can upgrade your cpu. Plus your going to want to know if you need 32bit 0r 64 bit os as not all programs/ features are interoperable. You can uprgrade vista to 7 WITHOUT DESTUCTIVE install from the START menu often times. Of course Dave is right, i would just be hesitant to invest in a new machine before i had a chance to get to know the company/position.

Solve : Strange audio issues?

Answer»

I suspect this might be an encoding problem, but it worked at one TIME and then stopped working later.

Anyhow, I'm uploading some videos from my camera and whenever I view the videos with Media Player, WHETHER they're before I started having the problem or after, the audio is nothing but a rapid, loud clicking. When I import the videos into Move Maker 2.6, I get the audio but not the video. It plays fine on the camera.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? This is a very very strange issue, and I have Googled to no avail.Issues with Microsoft Media Player are not rare.
What other media players have you tried?
I don't think it it is a driver issue.

Solve : internal hard drive is being recognized as a usb drive?

Answer»

I had a virus on my toshiba laptop L305-S5877. So I reloaded the OS, and everything seemed to be GOING well, until the desktop showed after the install was completed. I noticed that in my task BAR, there was that icon that you NORMALLY get when you plug in a usb device. And I clicked on it to find out that the device that was listed was my internal hard drive. Why is it doing this and how do I FIX it?

Also I noticed that when I plug in an external hard drive or anything into a usb port, it is not recognized and I dont hear the FAMILIAR sound or see the device as being plugged in. Whats going on

Solve : System Image Restore Points.?

Answer»

Thought I would share this. This will clean up some of those old System Images Restore Points that you have long deleted and are no longer useable. These are different that restore points. They are easy to get RID of.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Here's a before and after !

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]To delete restore points either:

1) Use Disk Cleanup. It will delete all but the most recent restore point or

2) Disable System Restore. As soon as you do, all restore points will be immediately deleted or

3) Reduce the space allotted to System Restore."To delete restore points either:

Thanks for your reply Allen! All good suggestions, but these are different. These remain after you delete old back up images on your external hard drive. They are different from restore points. They remain even after doing all the things you suggested. There may be other ways to delete them, but this is the only way I have found to get rid of them. If you have more than ONE External hard drive, you will need to do the same steps for each drive. Your reply will work good for deleting old restore points and can be used along with this to clean up your HD.
Thank you!
PS These are System Image Restore Points. The others are just restore points.Hi! Here's my latest restore points and System images. No restore points and two System images. Both work and are on different external DRIVES Every thing is cool!

Solve : Operating system not found? PLEASE HELP?

Answer»

Hello I have a Sony Vaio desktop RUNNING on wIndows vIsta pc Model PCG-2J1L and I recently had an issue with it starting. It froze and I restarted it and overtime I turn it on it takes me to the screen that asks to launch startup repair or start normally . When I start normally it restarts and takes me to the same screen when I launch the startup repair it LOADS then takes me to a black screen with an arrow . I tried PRESSING F10 to go to recovery center to reset my computer when I turn it on but it loads and takes me to the black screen with the arrow again I've tried booting at last successful boot but it takes me to a black screen that says operating system not found. Please help me , your help will greatly be appreciated . Thanks .Probably the most common CAUSE of the "Operating system not found" message is a damaged or defective hard disk. There are a set of troubleshooting steps here:

You can work through the guidance on that page but be aware that a trip to a repair company or shop MAY be necessary.

Solve : Copying the Recovery partition to make recovery disks on 2nd machine??

Answer»

Hi, everyone.

I'm quite sure I found this on-line and that it's doable, but now that I need it, of course I can't find it!

My COMPUTER-illiterate sister has an eMachines Windows Vista computer that will no longer boot either normally or in safe mode; it hangs on crcdisk.sys. She didn't make recovery disks when she got the computer, and the recovery console that comes up when it tries to boot also hangs. She believes that it was interrupted while running a Windows update, but she's not entirely certain about that.

Anyway, her primary concern was recovering her pictures and documents, and I was able to do that by booting off a bootable Ubuntu CD. THUS she now has everything she needs from that computer. Before we take the sledgehammer to it, I want to fiddle with it and see whether I can get it booting into Windows off of the HARD drive again so she can use it again, even if only for going on-line and not for saving precious stuff.

I thought I read somewhere that if the recovery partition was readable (as it -- and the rest of the hard drive -- seem to be) that you could copy it up onto an external hard drive, then create recovery CD's on a different computer, but I can no longer find the instructions on how to do that. Is that do-able, and if so, can I do it on an XP computer, or do I need to use a Win7 computer (I don't have a Vista computer). Can I do it right off of the external hard drive, or do I need to copy the partitions down to a fixed hard drive? And if so, do I just create directories in C:, so as not to OVERWRITE the D: recovery partitions in the computer I'm copying down to?

Thanks for any insights. I don't have precise model number or Vista version at my disposal at the moment, but if needed, I'll have that info tomorrow morning.
