Solve : Windows 7 and BASIC?

Answer»

I use GW BASIC everyday . It installed ok on all Windows machines in the past, but when I got a new computer which had Windows 7, it wouldn't perform. Is this a matter of 32 vs 64 bit? Is there any way I can convince this new computer to run Basic? I really don't want to rewrite all my programs to use some new version of my old reliable, ready to go BASIC.I haven't tested GW-Basic in a 64-bit environment with Windows 7, but I do know that it will work in 32-bit environment. Also unless you like the GW-Basic interface, you can write your programs in the same style using QBasic and they will interpret/compile under legacy support.

You could always make a Virtual Machine with DOS on it running in a Windows 7 64-bit environment and run GW-Basic or QBasic in its native environment, (BUT) I know for a fact that Serial/Parallel Communications between Virtual and Physical communication ports can be troublesome sometimes such as having to use redirection etc to get LPT1 printing to modern USB Printer etc.

Is there a reason why you need to stick with GW-Basic vs using a more modern language and developement tool? I enjoyed GW-Basic myself for years but due to its many limitations, mainly the 64k memory limitation, I moved on to C then C++, and for quick small down and dirty programs I use PERL.

The best solution would be if you had your system either set up with dual boot for a 32-bit OS or a 2ND computer available to dedicate to GW-Basic needs if you need to stick with it, as for the Virtual Machine environment can be a headache for certain applications.GW-BASIC is a 16-bit MS-DOS program (with a .COM extension) and will not run directly under any 64 bit Windows version. (XP, Vista, 7, , and the BIOS on many modern 64 bit machines will not allow booting directly into MS-DOS.

I could probably go on for several paragraphs about how GW-BASIC is perhaps the farthest thing from BASIC as you could POSSIBLY get and has thus somewhat sullied the language with any number of things specific to it's implementation, but that won't get you any closer to the solution and would just be annoying.

You really only have a few options here:

1.Use a Virtual Machine running an OS that GW-BASIC runs on.
2.Run an OS that GW-BASIC runs on
3.Rewrite or programs your find other software to do whatever task they perform.

In your situation, I would have probably done 3 long ago. In fact, I did do that, and haven't looked back. Since you've nipped that course of action in the bud, that pretty much leaves you with 1 or 2. However, another option is to buy/use a product such as "PowerBASIC" which purports to be code-compatible with GW-BASIC programs.

Another possibility is a bit stranger. There has been work done by some folks to create a GW-BASIC compatible toolset that runs on a more modern base. One such project can be found here, and runs GW-BASIC programs on the Silverlight platform.

I use Perl.
Fixed
http://www.addressof.com/basic/#/Home Thanks for sharing that BC. Was rather interesting. But doesn't accept CTRL+BREAK to stop

10 for x=1 to 10000
20 print x
30 next x

The creator of this did a good job in making this. Even added the ? = PRINT shorthand instruction so that typing in below the ? would change to PRINT when you list it.

10 for x=1 to 10000
20 ? x
30 next x

Going to see what else is there or missing from this. Wonder how it will do if reading/writing to files, if sound and colors work, and if you can compile to a .com file or only able to save as .bas

Update: Colors 0-15 and Sound works and it also accepts : to place an entire program onto a single line such as

10 for x=1 to 1000:?x:next x

Only thing I dont see is the BLINK that was part of the COLOR options for GW-Basic under DOS 2.11 when going higher than 15 in which 16 to 31 (16+color_number) as say COLOR 18,0 would show blinking green text on black background.

KEY ON and KEY OFF also function

Going to have fun with this tonight

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Some of the limitations you mention are either explained, or he knows about. He actually wrote several blog posts about it, which is why I know it exists because I pop in there from time to time.
here are some of his progress reports:

Back to BASIC
This is where he initially talks about it.

BASIC status report 2011/06/27

BASIC status report 2011/07/27

GW-BASIC

GW-BASIC 0.1.4

Control-Break probably isn't implemented for a good reason. CONSIDERING he had to write rather complex workarounds just to get the state of the shift key, I imagine catching Control-Break would be an even bigger pain in the rear.

I believe the Blink is missing because that was more a PROPERTY of the Display Adapter; that is, if you wrote characters with the color bit set in a specific way, some of the RAMDAC's on the VGA board would cause it to blink. (I'm not 100% on that, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't implemented by GW-BASIC itself).

Reading some of the posts (again), his implementation is per-pixel, which is to say he is drawing everything manually, including the fonts. if I had to guess, I'd think that blinking would require refreshing the screen more frequently, and checking colour BITS, perhaps only drawing if the millisecond of the current time is below 500, or if the second is divisible by 2, etc. That is, possible, but the feature itself was technically a display adapter feature.

From what I understand, you can save online, or something. I think it goes to your skydrive, but I've not actually had the chance to run it myself, since I don't have silverlight installed. I highly doubt it compiles, and probably only saves to plaintext. Rather than the tokenized binary format GW-BASIC would save by default. Here is the best solution.
A. Buy a small desk and put it beside you present desk.
B. Find a nice swivel chair that lets you turn to either desk.
C. Put an old PC on the new desk.
Problem solved.
I have used gwbasic.exe for many years. I use the virtual pc running xp and it works fine. I then can compile the basic program to an .exe which works fine.

Of course I also have a virtual dos 6.22 machine which I can use and gwbasic works well under dos.
I really like the vpc, I have windows 98, wfwg 3.11, windows 2000 running fine under the vpc..

Because, setting up a new physical machine is clearly better than the method he is currently using that works on his current machine...

Solve : CORRUPTED HARD DISK?

Answer»

Hello GUYS, today I installed Folder Guard on Windows 8 to password protect my folders.
Things got strange since I was not able to open the Guard interface...now my windows is not booting (missing bootmgr) and the repair CD is not working to fix the boot sector.
I have to mention that I'm USING Truecrypt and was UNABLE to decrypt it too.
Is there any chance to recover the data from the hard disk?
I'm getting "The disk in drive C is not formatted" when trying to open the C partition in Hiren's Boot CD.Thinking that if you have critical data on it the drive might need to be sent out to have data recovered from a data recovery house. I dont know of any utilities to CORRECT Truecrypt encrypted corrupted drives.+1 for sending it to a data recovery place. I've never used FolderGuard but wouldn't trust it as it's not open source, an important requirement for encryption software. Why do you need FolderGuard if you are already using TrueCrypt? I don't know how FolderGuard works but if it messes with the boot sector (like TrueCrypt's full-disk encryption does) then you may have had a conflict there. TrueCrypt (and possibly FolderGuard if it works in a similar fashion) makes the disk unreadable to any other software; you MUST use the tool for that encryption PROGRAM, or one that's fully compatible, in order to open it.

Error23/09/2012 11:41:47Kernel-EventTracing3SessionOpen Device Manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

Also, please run full scans with both the installed AV and MalwareBytesHi Allan.
I have run bit defender and MalewareBytes all clear, no there are no red symbols in device manager.
If it happens in both regular and safe modes my first thought is malware. If that's not the cause,

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Let's check the HD: To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

3) Let's check ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.Hi.
I don’t know what is different since this problem started it is a friend computer and it has been like this for a few months so he can’t remember when it started.

Looking at the event viewer the errors GO way back a couple of months, sorry forgot to mention I have run checkdisk all seems O.K.

Will try the memtest tomorrow when I have more time, will post the results, THANKS for all the suggestions.

Sorry, but "I ran checkdisk" doesn't mean anything. Did you run chkdsk /r as I suggested?Hi Allan.
Sorry for the delay in REPLYING, yes I ran chkdsk /r but it made no difference, I decided to do a windows repair and re-installed the windows files and all is now well, thanks for all the help.

Solve : Im Back and I have another problem?

Answer»

Hello again. I started having this problem on May 6 two days before my birthday. Well, it goes a LITTLE farther than that. I started having problems with realplayer again. Everytime I would open it, it would say "Realplayer has stopped working and has to close". It was doing that for a while. So I decided to do an Acer Sweep on May 6. This is where the problems come in.

I was very sure that I saved my browsing history, my favorites, my videos somewhere before I did the Acer Sweep. Well, as usual, something went wrong. I LOST everything. I talked to Norton because I thought I saved my backup files on there. Well, after 3 hrs. of talking to someone, to make a long story short, I still DONT have my files. I lost my browsing history, my favorites, everything.

I dont think I've ever asked this question but is there anyway I can retrieve my favorites. What I mean by favorites is the webpages and the websites that I saved. Is there anyway I can get those back? What about the browsing history etc.? Im assuming no. Quote from: Jack Catalano on May 10, 2012, 08:34:20 PM

So I decided to do an Acer Sweep on May 6. This is where the problems come in.

I did a search and couldn't find any reference to something called "Acer Sweep". Do you mean to say you did a system restore? If so, then no. Everything has been wiped and overwritten again. Anything you didn't have backed up is likely gone.In W7 the location for favorites is C:\users\username\favorites

Its an Acer something. What it does is that it wipes everything and starts as if Im using the computer for the first time. I actually try doing a system restore but it never works for me.

Now, I have upgraded to IE 9. When I did the Acer sweep, it BROUGHT me back to IE 7. Now, Im back to IE 9. Is there anyway I can somehow get my favorites back? The ones that I clicked and saved to my favorites. No. If you did a full restore then everything you had is lost.Yeah, thats what I figured. I thought I had saved it on a Norton Backup Drive but I guess not. I chatted with someone via email from Norton for 3 hrs. trying to see if I saved my files and to make a long story short, I didnt. I restored the files but didnt save them or something because I tried to open any of the files and they wouldnt open. Its just a little weird because obviously based on my posts, Im not the SMARTEST guy when it comes to computers but I just thought I saved them. It just aggravates me that it seems like I cant get ahead.

Plus, the fact that I still have low disk space. I've been having that problem for a while. And yes, I tried to delete some files to free up some space but I cant. It tells me I dont have enough free space to do that. I tried emailing Microsoft and chatting with them because I have Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works etc. but nothing. Microsoft didnt help me at all and you really cant even chat with them. A while ago, I was able to retrieve some of the files that I lost. Now, I cant retrieve anything that I saved a long time ago. Everything is in a ZIP File and I cant open it. How would I be able to open it? I was able to open my files before but now I cant open anything. I will say, for example, backup files 2. I used to be able to open that folder and see what was in the file but now I cant. Can someone help? You just need to unzip the file. http://www.7-zip.org/Ok, I downloaded 7-zip.org, now what do I do now? I can see whats in the file but I cant play them yet. If you were in my situation and you just downloaded 7-zip.org, what would you do next? Can you tell me, step by step?Quote from: Jack Catalano on July 08, 2012, 10:09:56 AM

right click the folder u want to open--> Extract here--> browse to the location u want--> After extracting each zip file u can play or whatever can do with them.
but you said u r running out of space, try to run "disk Defragmenter" in windows tools(just type in the search bar in start menu), it would save u some space.
hope it will help you out.
Hello and I'm back. I have another problem. I've been trying to delete my backup files. The problem is that everytime I try to delete backup files, I cant. It says it invalid or something. Now, I know to free up disk space and having a computer thats slow, I have to delete my files but I cant. It wont let me. Can someone please help?Have you tried to take ownership of those files? http://www.blogsdna.com/2173/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm

Solve : vista ownership..???

Answer»

My Sister bought a laptop from well known PC supplies about 4 years ago... fully paid up and all systems GO, so to spk.

About 18 months ago the screen cracked and we couldnt afford repair, so went out and got a cheap PC running on Win XP Home, just to get us by..

And whilst doing a spring clean we've found the Genuine Vista CD that CAME with the laptop..

My Question : Can I install this onto my PC, ? and if yes... How/Where can I get Prduoct Key Code for it, as it was stuck on base of laptop which we've since thrown away..!!

This is a genuine question and will go to microsoft is that is the ANSWER...

IV'E not looked yet, but does Microsoft have a forum for this very question..??

Thanks for any replies This Disc which came with the Laptop was intended for that Laptop only. Licensing is non-transferrable although some people do it when you have a good key. This disc is useful to hold onto if you ever have a Vista computer that needs a repair installation, other than that, without its key, its useless. I have some discs for Windows 95 thru XP that the keys are lost to, and they are only good for clean installations on computers that still have their good "original keys" affixed to them, or repair installations. And some XP keys are picky and requires a phone call to microsoft to activate. Microsoft is unable to assist you if you dont have a key, however they wont mind selling you a new key for Windows 8.
ok, Thanks

Solve : Battery Icon Freezing!?

Answer»

Hey all, I have had this problem before and somehow I fixed it but here is my problem:

Just to add, I have a laptop HP G62 series.

Anywho, in the task menu I have a battery icon meter (like any other laptop). Sometimes it works great but other times it freezes. Whilst it freezes, I do not know that my battery is 1% of death and my laptop GOES into hibernate mode.

When I right-click the battery icon to open the power option menu or something, it un-freezes and becomes normal again!

Like I said above, I have had this problem before and somehow I fixed this!

Just to also add, I had to reinstall my Windows 7 OS due to several reasons!

1 WAY to fix this is to reload the explorer.exe in the task manager SECTION but of course, it keeps happening after the laptop restarts.

Can anyone relate to this problem and comment a fix?

ThanksQuote

Anything related to your current freezing problem? Have you tried using the HP Support Assistant - Battery Check?Good point!

The laptop was fully formatted because I hated all the software's you get if doing a factory format, but I will download the HP Support Assistant and see what happens.

I believe when I had this problem before, I did have the HP Support Assistant installed but not SURE if that was the fix needed.

I will post a SOLUTION if I found a fix (hopefully!)

Solve : Administrator: x\$windwos.~bt\Windows\sysytem32\cmd.exe?

Answer»

Hi

When I start my COMPUTER it comes up with a BLACK screen saying:

Administrator: X:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Windows\Sysytem32\cmd.exe

Yes this topic has been discussed before but the problem wasn't resolved in that thread.

I tried to install Windows 7 because the computer wouldn't allow me to restore to factory settings. When I tried that the blue screen of death kept appearing.

I tried to reinstall the Windows 7 upgrade. The Windows 7 upgrade failed every time I tried to install it. Then that's when the black screen started appearing.

My computer was originally installed with Vista. The version is 6.1.7600.

I appreciate any and all help.

Thanks.
MikeYou have mentioned of Windows 7 upgrade from Windows Vista without the edition provided. There is a PATH to this upgrade found here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7?T1=tab02Sorry about that. It's the Home Premium edition.I also forgot to mention that I did make recovery disks. What was the bluescreen message when trying to install or use the recovery partition? Did you happen to check the HARD drive health STATUS first?

Solve : BSOD, random restarting, pc wont boot.?

Answer»

Pc Specs - Amd Athlon II X2 240 (Regor). Asrock M3A785GXH/128M. Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G 2GB DDR3 Ram. Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 390W. Windows 7 Professional.

The PC was assembled around 2 1/2 years back. Except for the PSU that was bought around 4 years back. Unfortunately I can't remember when exactly. I'll find out.

The issue at present, is random but frequent BSOD crashes. Sometimes while using the computer, mostly surfing and videos. Other times, when idle, like downloading.

I have replaced two hard drives since the BSOD crashes first started around a year back. It first surfaced around a year back. Now it's happening again. There was random restarting too. The pc would also not boot several times.

Memtest86 gave a 'unexpected interrupt' error, in garbled words, when I ran it overnight.

Couple of days back, a technician was called in. According to his diagnosis, the CMOS settings had become corrupt due to some changes I had made in the BIOS. I had overclocked the mGPU settings briefly. But reverted to default settings after the problems. I didn't touch the memory timings. He also added that the CPU was OVERLOADED by this and was overheating. This morning it BSODed again.

I have attached the latest minidump.

I haven't run any cpu stress tests yet. I can't think of any other details as I am short on time(the pc might crash).

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Here is the text from BlueScreenView. I selected the previous minidumps as well.

Memtest86 having an issue with garbled text etc is an interesting one. If you have a spare DDR3 Ram stick around, I'd swap out the stick and see if you get different results. Other than that I looked over your motherboard on neweggs website to look at its construction. The capacitor TYPE they used in many locations could be a concern as for I have seen this type of electrolytic pop their tops and leak on other boards and cause instability. Look over all capacitors ( silver cans ) on the motherboard for swelling, popped tops, and possibly electrolyte leaking out ( usually a yellowish crud ) is indication that the electrolyte is leaking. I have seen both video cards as well as motherboards act up when these go bad.

In some cases I was able to save the board by locating the troubled cap or caps and carefully remove them with the legs remaining in the board, then pick up matching MicroFarad and Voltage Capacitors and solder them onto the old legs of the old capacitors after the outter shell, foil, and electrolyte was removed with proper polarity. Most people would toss the board and get a replacement than to replace caps, but I am the type that will fix them at component level if I can diagnose the failed component and COST effective to fix. Caps are cheap!Wow. Kinda makes me think of the audiophile community with it's cap modding! That line of thinking is certainly very compelling. For now I am going to run memtest once more. After that I'm gonna give it over to the local technician to swap out the ram and test. But as for conclusive testing, I might have to borrow a friend's ram. Thanks a lot for taking the time to compile a very detailed reply. One of the BSOD's is the LAN (Realtek). Get the latest driver & reinstall it. It's a place to start, get driver from Asrock or Realtek.

Kinda makes me think of the audiophile community with it's cap modding!

That's a bit different - audiophiles replacing perfectly good components with other just as good, but overpriced ones is voodoo/hocus pocus, like paying mucho $$$ for magic wires, whereas replacing poor quality capacitors in a digital circuit is definitely a PROVEN good thing.

Computer_Commando, installed the latest realtek driver. Salmon Trout, aww heck ofcourse you're right. It was a throwaway remark On the computer front, I ran memtest again, this time it passed. Could it be the corrupt CMOS settings that was making memtest give that weird erorr? Aww heck, now I can't remember if I first ran memtest, before or after the technician's diagnosis of the CMOS being corrupt. Matter of fact, I didn't even ask him how he fixed it! Isn't a CMOS corruption when you get a 'Checksum error' at bootup? Gotta lay off the mary jane.

Also, I had a another BSOD problem with a WRkrn.sys file after I uninstalled AVG. Turned out it was a Webroot AV driver. I had to do a 'last known good configuration'. All in all, I haven't had a BSOD since yesterday.

Right now, I'm thinking, I could sit on it and wait for it to happen again. Or I could run some stress tests? OCCT? Should I risk it though, considering my PSU is old and only 390W? Thanks for your suggestions and time guys.I forgot ask, does memtest restart the computer after the tests are done?MemTest rubs in cycles...and doesn't stop til you stop it ...so no.Oh. I checked this morning and it was about 98% of the way, on the 12th pass with no errors. I had to switch off the monitor for the cleaning lady had to do her work around there. When I switched on the monitor later, the pc had booted into windows. So, either she accidentally hit the power button, or something went wrong. I'll run it again tonight. With the information given, I suspect the power supply is the culprit. Swap the power supply out with another of equal or greater wattage (try to borrow one to test if you can). See if the problem persists.Hey jj, thanks for the suggestion. But for now the problem seems to have been taken care of. I had to uninstall avg and update my lan drivers. There was also a slightly careless BSOD incident involving driver verifier enabled by accident.

Solve : Restoring using recovery partition?

Answer»

I'm having compaq presario which comes with WINDOWS 7 home basic. I installed unactivated version of windows7 professional for a trial. i need to get back the activated genunie windows7 home basic using recovery partition. Is it possible to get back the genuine verion using recovery partition in this CASE? PLS help me in this issue.

Thanks,

VinothYes...since it's different for all Makes and Models follow the instructions at the CompaQ SITE...I had a Compaq Presario laptop with Windows Vista. F11 was the key to start the recovery procedure. Hit F11 during startup, before Windows starts loading. If you created any files while using the Win 7 Professional trial that you want to keep, be sure to save them to a flash drive or external drive before running the recovery since it will completely erase the HARD drive and install the OS and all software as originally configured.

Solve : How to view music files as "date modified" Win 7?

Answer»

Every now and then I like to back up my files (which is always a good idea). I want to back up my music library to an external HD since it has greatly expanded in the last few months. For the sake of time saving, I only want to copy the most recent additions, but I can't figure out how to view them as "DATE modified".
I have that as an option at the top of my music folder, but I cannot figure out how to use it. I have choices like "SELECT date or date range", "a long time ago", "earlier this year", etc.. I cannot figure out how to see which ones were within the last few months in descending order. I used to just click on the ARROW next to the date modified button and that would switch them between most and least recent. Please help!Windows 7 tries to be helpful when it has a folder with MULTIMEDIA files, but you can make it behave. Select Details in the View menu and then right click any column header. In the menu that appears, check 'date modified' to show that column, now you can click on that column header to sort them in ascending or descending order. You can drag any column to a new position using the LEFT mouse button. Using the right-click menu you can choose the headings you want.

Also, there is some proper music!

Solve : Cap max sound??

Answer»

I'm trying to cap the max sound in WIN7, with a program or a script that start after 9:00PM. Just so that the user can't set the volume higer thatn I wrote in the program.

It dosen't need to be password protected or have any kind of security. This is just so that the user don't accidently set the volume to HIGH. I know that VolumeLock exist, but I'm LOOKING for a FREE option, and I think you should be able to WRITE a script in Autohotkey that can do that, but I dont know that program language so I wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

But if anyone know a way please let me know.

Solve : Windows cannot be installed to this disk?

Answer»

I have a gateway that came loaded with windows xp. I have since added more ram to make the total 3GB. Then I guess I got a virus or something, because windows wouldnt LOAD anymore and I suspect the virus CORRUPTED the MBT. Anyways, I wanted to load windows 7 on the disk, a fresh install. I inserted the windows 7 disk, and all seemed to go well until the screen where it lists the partitions on the disk and ask where to install. Well it only showed one partition that was 160GB, but it said windows cannot be installed to this disk.

Does that mean the disk is bad or is there some setting or something I have to tweak in the bios
More info on the PHYSICAL HDD's in the PC and the partitions on each drive and SIZES...there is only one disk and the size is 160GB. There are no partitions on the disk and the laptop doesnt show me any either when I get to that screen that I mentioned earlier
Dors it still boot to the HDD or no ? ?
Were any changes made to the drive before this ? ?

How is windows reporting the drive ?
And what exact;y does it say on this Win7 DVD ?No it does not boot to the hard drive, it just stays stuck on the windows xp screen. No changes were made to the disk drive, it was working and then suddenly wouldnt boot up anymore.

I dont understand what the following questions mean: like what do you mean 'How is windows reporting the drive ?'
And Im assuming you are asking whether the dvd says 32 bit windows 7 or 64 bit by the question 'What exact;y does it say on this Win7 DVD ?' Its 32 bit, and I READ that you can install a 32 bit os on a 64 bit system

What laptop model do you use and have you run any diagnostic test for the HD?Quote from: shashgo on September 29, 2012, 08:22:59 PM

Can someone help me please? What versions of Microsoft .NET Framework are listed in add/remove PROGRAMS?
You should see, at most, any combination of:
1.1
4 Client Profile
4 Extended
4.5
and possibly (but not likely) some with Multi-Targeting Pack.

It's ALSO possible the error you mentioned at the start isn't actually because of installing 2 copies (which shouldn't happen anyway) but because of some other factor instead. Posting the actual error may help diagnose the issue further.
I actually know its because it was because I installed two copies (Errors didn't start happening till then)
Here is the errors (Well a form of it,sometimes it changes 1 or 2 things but its always .net 4 framework stuff)

Im assuming this is what you meant, unless you mean the error I get trying to install .net 4,cause all it says is "Fatal Error" and gives me those logsI found this information and troubleshooting steps from the knowledge base. I'm not sure if you've tried it, I got some hits to other posts that may have been you, so I apologize if I'm leading you in circles

Error codes “0x80070643” or “0x643” occur when you install the .NET Framework updates.

Some 'generic' stuff you could give a go, though- you could try running sfc /scannow in the run dialog (Windows Key+R). This could fix any issues with the Windows Installer Database which could be causing these sorts of issues.

Another thing to try is uninstalling every .NET Framework version, then install the version you need for the software you are trying to run. One utility you can use for cleanup is the dotnet Cleanup Tool, and remove all versions. Then you can install using the standalone .NET 4.0 installer (to avoid possible issues from the standard web installer).

Unfortunately the error code the CLR gives (800040005) TRANSLATES to a less than helpful "unspecified error", so there isn't a lot to go on. The error lists some log files that might have extra information on the problem if you can find and attach them to a post.

Solve : invisible game folder?

Answer»

I have been having an issue for about 3 wks now. i had some sort of spyware which took everything off of my desktop except background...i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and found nothing. I decided to do a clean install of windows 7 pro and reinstalled my game. i tried to run it and it came up with game is not fully installed(which it was). I uninstalled game and reinstalled and same thing..did a clean install again with windows and same thing. Decided to check c drive to go into folder to check some things and no folder found...did a search for game and it was not on COMPUTER but icon was. uninstalled game reinstalled game and same thing...decided to create a game folder with all files from disk and put in hd and it wanted to copy over the old folder that was not there...so i did a check and found out that windows put it as a hidden folder(odd for a game folder)i got the folder to show but it is showing invisible which will not let me play the game...never had this issue before until that spyware(virus)happened. The game is Nascar Racing 2003 Season(which is not made anylonger) I contacted Microsoft because i thought it would be a windows issue, and they did some checking and found a bunch of errors on my computer which they could fix for like $300(wow) I thought that a fresh install would fix anything like that but i guess it did not...just need a way to check the errors and a way to fix them. I would really appreciate the help....i do work on computers on the side and never seen this before...i would also like for my game folder to be visible again lol

I have Windows 7 pro

Your only hope is to DLoad and install XP compatibility Mode from MS and re-install the game...
ok, i will try that thanx for the response. the problem is though when i first built this system and installed windows 7pro the game worked perfectly until this issue happened a few weeks ago and now no matter what it does this...Hmmm...
Only thing i can think then is the CD itself has degraded over time...
Sometimes burning a fresh copy on another burner/system will fix this...but no GUARANTEES on that as it may have copyright protection.i actually tried that with the game and the same thing...windows should not make the folder invisible it is a game folder that is what has confused meAre you logged on as Admin ?yes i am the only one that uses this computer
i found out by talking to microsoft that there are errors that were done by a HACKER and i need to remove the hackers footprint how do i fix the errors in my event viewer and then remove the hackers footprint? Not at all SURE how MS came to that conclusion...sounds like someone who just wants your money...i'd be wary.
If i were you i'd do another clean install of 7 as it sounds like your infected again.

When you run setup this time delete the C: partition and then have Setup re-create it for you...this will take a little longer than just a re-install but it's the proper way to do it.

P.S. Just for my edification post both the phone# contact info you used for MS and the site they used...actually i did an online chat where they took over my computer and opened my eventl logs and it shows tons of errorsThere are scammers who contact you by phone out of Indian call centers. They say they are from the "Microsoft Security Center" and they believe your computer might be hacked. To make you believe this they ask you to open your Event Log. (Everybody's Event Log contains many errors. It's normal.) Then they ask for a sum AROUND $300 to clean up your PC. I do not believe it could be Microsoft he called.
Exactly.

And if they did remote access then as far as i'm concerned it'd be crazy to not do a wipe and clean install...

wiley where is the contact info i requested ? ?

Solve : Trouble with Gateway and Bootrec?

Answer» I am having trouble with my laptop and Fixmbr,

First the stats and info;

Gateway laptop model 1625, circa 2008
OS- microsoft vista service pack 2 build 6002
Pro- AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology
Ram- 2Gb
HD- ? 220 Gb
Video card- ? Supposed to be ATI based
Sound card- ?
AV- until now I have been using McAfee internet security

(part of my problem is that device manager does not work)

The back story;

About 2 WEEKS ago while surfing the web I got a virus. Specifically Zeroaccess TROJAN that Mcafee was good enough to tell me about. My first indication was a pop-up from McAfee STATING that it was there and in order to fix the problem I would need to reboot. I rebooted only to have the same MSG. occur over and over I couldn't even ignore it. Well long story short after talking with Mcafee for an hour they said they could help me for a modest $90.00 fee. I was angry and decided to go it alone. I found instructions on how to remove the virus on-line at McAfee's own web site and folowed them to the letter. The last instruction given was to run the Bootrec /fixmbr command from the recovery console command prompt. I did this and rebooted my machine.

The issue; (#1)
Well no more virus pop-ups... Also no more internet connection, no sound, No device manager, almost nothing works in controll panel Most of my programs either fail to start or give me the following MSG, "The specified service does not exist as an installed service". Explorer will allow me to view and work with my files but will hang sometimes for a min in between every mouse click, and it takes almost 6 min to boot the machine. Windows boots but that is about all.

Fixes;
I have tried all the usuall channels for support. My vendor gateway has very LITTLE help for a model this old. Thinking that this was virus related I originally sought help at the viruses and malware forum where a very nice guy named Superdave was helping me. But As we worked on it it became clear to me that The issue was more about what I did to the boot record then the virus.

And I am afraid I stumped Dave. He had me run both the fixmbr and the fixboot COMMANDS again. We ran the windows start up repair utility as well as several cleanup and malware removal tools (from safemode which is the only place they will run) The logs of which are available if needed.

Finally He suggested I format and reload windows. Which I'd be only to happy to do, I had intended to all along but I can't because of this issue. That's another story suffice to say that is issue 2 which I may also need help with...

I'd be happy if someone could help me with the Bootrec issue. I have read on-line and here in this forum that running the fixmbr and fixboot commands on some dell notebooks is a bad Idea. Would this be true for gateway? Does gateway have a proprietary bootrecord, and if so can this be reversed? I am sorry for the length of this post if anyone could help me I would sincerely appreciate it!

Solve : Trouble signing onto my laptop; forgot password?

Answer»

I haven't signed on to my laptop that I bought from former co-worker of mine (really savvy with computers) in a few months and I've forgotten the password to log-in. There was no animosity between us after the purchase - he ended up quitting and getting a job elsewhere. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Windows 7 Professional. All though, as evidenced from the bottom of the laptop, he did upgrade the OS at one point from Windows Visa but I am not sure which edition it was. I downloaded the Password Reset Wizard via from my parents home computer on to a new/unused USB flash drive. I clicked on the appropriate drive, typed in a new password, typed it again to confirm and typed in the password hint. After doing all of that, this error message came up "An error occurred while the wizard was attempting to set the password for this user account." Did I do something wrong? And at this point, I am stumped. I haven't been able to get in touch with the former co-worker. Should I call Microsoft and ask for them to send me a Windows 7 disk, buy it online (saw the cheapest price on Newegg for $139.99) or should I try a Windows password recovery tool? If so, which one?

If there any other questions that you might have in order to assist me further, please ask.

Thank you in advance.I would suggest using the windows password recovery boot disk available at:
http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

It's free and it should fix your problem. It's a little archaic looking, but it'll do the job. I would suggest clearing/blanking the password instead of setting a new one as setting a new one sometimes causes problems on Vista and maybe other versions of Windows as well.Is it possible to download a software program on to the home computer (which I've been using) in order to download the Password Reset Wizard on to another USB flash drive so that it will possibly read that its for the laptop and not the home computer? If that's possible, what program should I check out? And if this doesn't work, why? Thanks again. It's a CD you burn and it will work on whatever computer you boot from it. It doesn't matter which computer you create the CD with.https://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=vista+forgot+admin+password&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS369US309&ie=UTF-8&aq=0&oq=vista+forgot+adJust download Hirens Boot CD. I did end up trying out both Ophcrack and Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. Ophcrack didn't find any passwords and Offline NT Password & Registry Editor came up with this message. Here is the link to the photo that I took of it:

Any suggestions what I can do next? Thanks.I suggest u to use a password hacking software named as BootHiren (CDBootHiren). I used it many times, its simple and size is 500 MB. Use TORRENT sites to download it. Requires a blank CD-R or CD-RW. Burn the s/w on the disk and use that disk to boot your laptop. It will REMOVE your old password. no commands are required only simple menus are there.
Have a good day!

Solve : .net framework error?

Answer»

I just installed a razer naga 2012, i used to have the razer naga BLUE one REGULAR. Before my regular mouse died the razer synapse was not detecting it after it died and i bought a new one it does the same thing but it gives me a framework error. I've tried installing and uninstalling everything from razer synapse and new work client and net framework 4.0 i have even installed net framework 4.5 which is what i have at the moment each time restarting my computer i have left a attachment so u can see any help to fix this problems will be greatly appreciated thank you. The mouse does work as i can press every button and move the pointer fine the problem is when it comes to using the program to map the keys i like to play with anyways thank you again.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Another note i have a laptop and the program works perfectly with mouse on that laptop also laptop has windows 7 and PC which is the one with the problems has Windows VistaOk i got it to work but for others who might have a similar problem this is how i did it.

As it was working on my laptop and not on my Pc i took the files and copy them from laptop obtaining the drivers for the mouse which u cannot find on any razer website is the razer naga 2012 drivers. so i copied everything and started working from there uninstalling the full synapse > restarting and REINSTALLING it but this time i went to c:/programdata/Razer (to be able to see this folder u need to activate hidden files and folders on your folder options) and replaced the razer folder from the PC to the one i had on laptop - manually updated the drivers and fonts 3 of them there and WALA im go to go :-)

this were the file names inside C:/program data/razer/synapse/product updates/downloads that i needed to install to make the magic work but for some reason when i was installing it on my computer it gave me the framework error i mention in my first POST, Thank you all have a great day

Solve : winload.exe is missing/corrupt?

Answer»

Hi all. I’ve posted this problem on another forum and thought I’d pick you guys’ brains with it too. I need some help with a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. I'm trying to do a System Recovery with image disks created with the included Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0 cuz it had a virus and I don't know if it got it for sure, but after Windows is thru loading files I get a message in the Windows Boot Manager:

\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
The selected entry could not be loaded because the app. is missing or corrupt.

This laptop did not come with ANY disks when bought new. The only disks available are the 2 I made with DataSafe. I've tried several suggestions I found on the net, but, so far, none have worked:

Booted from a Windows 7 Repair Disk>cmd prompt and:
1. typed bootrec.exe /fixmbr = success
2. bootrec.exe /fixboor = success
3. bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd = success
4. chkdsk c: /r = fixed 1 file
5. chkdsk d: /r = OK
6. sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows
Rec'd this msg. with the above command:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to
fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
I extracted this file and saved it to a thumb drive for later use if need be. (It was 18MB of gibberish to me)
7. Renamed winload.exe to winload.old and replaced it with a known GOOD winload.exe file from my pc.
8. Ran an Avast Free AV boot-time scan = nothing found
9. bcdedit in Windows Boot Loader section indicates:
identifier
device partition=c:
path \windows\system32\winload.exe
description Windows 7
(windows\system3\boot\windload.exe does not show anywhere in BCD, although
the Boot folder and file appear in Windows Explorer). Winload.exe also shows in
Windows\System32 folder as well
10. Rebooted into F8>Repair your computer, but does nothing except load into
Windows normally.

So, basically what happens is that Windows is working, but I need to do a factory image
recovery, put the 1st recovery disk in, Windows loads files along the bottom of the sceen,
then gives me the error msg. about winload.exe is missing or corrupt.

I'd be obliged if someone could shed some light on this. Please use terms, instructions, etc. that I can follow because I’m no pc guru. Hope I haven't forgotten anything, but, who knows? Done so many things I can't remember 'em all.

Thanks for any help.

Dell Inspiron 1545
Pentium Dual-Core 2.20GHz
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit
Avast Free AV
Restore media has an issue ( corrupt ), so I would look at borrowing a Windows 7 OEM disc from a friend and activate it with your key and not theirs. You will then have to install all necessary drivers for this computer as for it will be a clean install vs installation from system restore image etc.

OR Contact Dell and order a System Restore DVD for this model. Haven't had to order one yet for Dell, but HP was able to send me one for $35 for a laptop a customer of mine had that they crashed a drive on and didnt have restore media available that could have been burned to DVD's.Thanks for replying Dave. I completely understand what you're telling me because I've done what you've suggested many times in the past, but I want to know how to fix this issue because I work on pc's for folks. I had just never ran across this before and want to learn how/if there's a fix for it. Is winload.exe on the recovery disk also or, is it an issue within Windows (which I believe it is) is what I'm really trying to determine.

Quote

\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
The selected entry could not be loaded because the app. is missing or corrupt.

Locate this file on a healthy Windows 7 system and copy it to thumb drive, and copy this known healthy winload.exe over top of the suspected corrupt winload.exe on this laptop is all I can suggest. You could also be looking at bad DLL's that this winload.exe call out too as well, but injecting a known good winload.exe overtop of the original suspected corrupt is my suggestion for now. Good Luck!Step 7 in my original post. Is that what u mean Dave?Only time i've seen that error is on a bootleg copy of Windows. Thanks for the reply patio, but this installation of Win 7 is what was on the machine when he bought it NEW from WAL Mart and opened the box, so that should rule out it being a bootleg I would think.

If it was a refurbished pc, I'd suspect that also, because I worked on a pc last wk. that wanted to activate Win thru Dell--but it was an HP. That immediately threw me a red flag and I ordered a recovery disk to "fix" it.

Like I explained to Dave, I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I've worked on these things since Win 3.1 and run across something new almost every time. I'd just like to know a fix for it for the learning experience, and in case I run across it again.

Thanks for the insight patio. I do appreciate it.No problem empty...
What if anything have you heard from Dell ? ?
Have you ATTEMPTED a startup repair ? ?
To do so press F8 repeatedly at powerup...dont wait for the Winsplash screen...
Select the Advanced Boot Menu...
Startup Repair i believe is the last option on the list...run it
Do NOT interrupt it...even if it seems to hang...patio, there isn't any Advanced Boot Menu, nor a Startup Repair

Repair your computer (when I choose this, it thinks about it for awhile then boots normally into
Windows
Safe mode
Safe mode w/networking
Safe mode w/cmd prompt
Enable boot logging
Enable low resolution video
Last known good configuration
Directory services restore mode
Debugging mode
Disable driver signature enforcement
Start Windows normally

The pc works fine inside Windows--I just can't get a factory image recovery done with the recovery
disks because it'll boot from it, then go to the Win. Boot Mgr. screen that gives me the winload.exe missing/corrupt error
Sorry for missing that step 7 in your post. Going to look to see if I can find DLL file DEPENDENCY info on winload.exe as for like I stated before it could be a missing or corrupt DLL that is causing winload.exe to fail to function and the programmer(s) who added the error message used a generic error alert event that does not go into specifics. Sometimes you will get messages that point of DLL issues, but sometimes like might be the case here the EXE failing to operate without the proper DLL support might error out without specifying a DLL issue.http://www.scribd.com/doc/50355566/The-Windows-7-Boot-Process

Might be an issue with winload.exe's hand off to NTOSKRNL.EXE, HAL.DLL, etc

Try replacing NTOSKRNL.EXE with a known good copy, but first make a backup copy of this file to have the original just in case. Very much doubt you would need to do this, but I always save a copy of any system files elsewhere before stomping on top of their location with a new copy.Sorry it took so long to post back Dave, but I took a couple of days off from this beast.

I did as u suggested and replaced ntoskrnl.exe with a known good one from my pc, but no luck. Still receiving the winload.exe error.

I d'loaded a 90 day trial version of Win 7 Home Premium 64 .iso and burnt it to disk from softpedia.com a few days ago. Do u think I could install that (since I don't have access to a Win 7 disk anywhere else), then try my recovery disk again? Do u know if installing this trial would create a new bootloader so I can get this old pig out of my hair? lol It looks as tho this one has me beat unless u have the time/inclination to help me fix it. I'm the type that likes to know what went wrong so I can fix it if I ever run across it again because I've worked these things since Win 3.1 for people.

I'd like for this one not to beat me if I can. Thanks so much for your help thus far. When systems fight me as hard as this one is fighting you, I take the etch-a-sketch approach to hard drives after backing up important data to other media etc. I have fought many battles in the almost 30 years working on computers and I prefer clean builds to baseline a system back to normality or repair installations for highly configured systems vs trying to find that needle in the hay stack that is causing the issues which sometimes can be found, but many times your dealing with a pin cushion with many issues. I generally will put up to an hour into a system trying to feed it the files its complaining about missing or corrupt etc, and if I dont make any progress its time to wipe the drive clean and start fresh with etch-a-sketch approach as I call it, or repair installation if you have software that you lost the media and keys from etc and cant afford to perform a complete baseline to clean.

The trial ISO of 7 if it allows for repair installation, I'd try that vs clean build first. But you will not know exactly what was the cause, you will however have a headache taken care of though.

Solve : I can't get any further than entering my main computer password.?

Answer»

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 5742 with Windows 7. Everything was working fine till about 3 hours ago. Once I've entered my COMPUTER login password, I get a BRIEF flash of my desktop screen then the whole screen is replaced with a 'This programe cannot display the webpage' even though I am not trying to access the internet. I have tried ctrl/alt/del to take me off that screen and attempted to start TASK manager. I am unable to access task manager. I have tried restarting but the same thing happens each time. I'd really appreciate any help, thankyou.Have you recently installed any new programmes? Try BOOTING into safe mode and from there RUN a virus scan and see what happens. From safe mode you can also carry out a system restore if the scan does not fix it.

Solve : Audio to headphone's delay?

Answer»

This has happened for a while now but when I listen to music through my headphones, the sound comes through the laptop SPEAKERS for a second and goes straight to the headphones.

Now, this happen's every so often and no software is conflicting with the audio. I have disabled all the third-party audio manager's you get with the laptop (HP) so its RUNNING off the Windows audio manager only.

I thought it may be a dodgy wiring on my headphones but it does it not every headphones I try. So maybe a hardware problem?Given this statement " but it does it not every headphones I try. " it sounds more like the problem is with the male connector (the one going into the computer's headphone jack) is the likely issue. I would only use the one(s) that do not cause this issue.truenorthA few days AGO, I reformatted my laptop and just reinstall Windows 7 with a disk, not with the HP partition (don't like all the software's you get with the laptop).
Around 2-3 months before, I did the same - reinstall the OS from a Windows 7 disk. In them 2 - 3 months, I had the same issue but fixed it by disabling all the Enhancements you can choose like Bass Boost, Virtual Surround, etc. (I had these ticked, thats when the problem started).
However, this time I do not have any Enhancements ticked and I'm still having the problem.

To say so myself, I THINK I would be more a driver problem than a jack port problem.
I will reinstall the audio drivers, let Windows updates reinstall them and maybe download the HP audio drivers and managers and see what happens from there.when you are installing the operating system it is important to install certain drivers in a specific order. For instance the 1st one to install is the chip-set driver. When you have done your O/S reinstalls have you been doing that?truenorthHP laptops doesn't have chipset updates, its only the graphics card, network card, bluetooth (optional), SD card read and more.

The updates which I do first is all the hardware drivers, then the services packs, then the main updates. If they didn't have chipset drivers how would the components work ? ?

It doesn't have to be an update neccessarily but as a rule of THUMB ALL drivers need to be re-installed after a re-install.Nope, there is no chip set drivers within the HP drivers.

Even in the Windows Updates doesn't/didn't have a chipset driver update or install.

Let's also bare in mind that Windows 7 installs most important updates whilst installing the OS, my laptop only supports Windows 7 (well on the support drivers). Meaning that if I had Windows Vista, it would be slightly hard to find a chip driver which will work on my laptops model. What model # is this laptop ? ?

My mom has an HP computer with Windows Vista. Sometimes it connects to our wireless network, sometimes not. Solve : how to use microphone?

Answer»

How do I use microphone to record THINGS and to be able to play it back?Where do I record it to?
And listen to it without having the main speakers on?
There aren't any shut off on my speakers.I would only like to use my ear phones.Normally Windows turns off the speakers when recording.
This link is for an HP and might work for you.
http://www.ehow.com/how_6786529_turn-microphone-hp-pavilion.htmlNormally, computers automatically disable speakers when a headset, i.e. ear phone, is CONNECTED.

To record from a MIC, you COULD use the basic sound RECORDER in Windows computers; it's found in the Accessories folder in the Programs menu. Or, get something much more sophisticated, such as Audacity.

Solve : Boot from External CD Drive (ISO file)?

Answer»

I am trying to boot from a external CD DRIVE that is connected to my Toshiba labtop.

Problem: I am unable to boot the CD.

Details: When the external is connected to the labtop via USB 2.0, I get a black screen with a blinking underscore. (at most i waited 2 mins, got impatient so didnt fully wait to see if it would disappear) When it is then unplugged the black screen goes away and it becomes normal. Thus I am able to see the "press f2 for boot OPTIONS" press f12 for boot menu".

When I try at this point and connect the external cd drive to the labtop during the bios setup i get 3 options;
HDD, FDD and lan. That means it's an older LAPTOP that does not support BOOTING to a USB device.
What are you attempting to FIX on this PC ? ?...perhaps there's another method. What do you mean older labtop? My labtop is relatively "new" Toshiba T235

Also I waited out for 4 minutes w/ the disc in the external black screen w/ underscore still thereWhats on the CD and how did you build it ? ?...it makes a difference...The thread title includes "(ISO file)". If the OP has just burned that to a disk, so that a DIR shows blablabla.iso then it will not boot.
Thread title indicates ISO file was probably just copied to CD.
To OP: ISO files are actually images of complete CDs or DVDs compiled as one whole image file (*.iso), just like Ghost does for hard disks and partitions.

Solve : Long folder names with scrambled characters and MRT-file within?

Answer»

Hello,

I have weird folder names like "31477affc4ff17a5e3ba" SITTING in my C: and D: drives, not even inside are program FILES. Inside is a .exe file named "MRT.exe" which seems to have only appeared since I remounted my harddisk into my new Win7 PC from a previous Vista system. I tried mounting it back to Vista but the FOLDERS stay the same and look scrambled.

Whilst reading on the net I find ARTICLES that MRT-file is MALICIOUS software, but I dont agree and also by reading this link:
http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/mrt

Could anybody help identify whether these are newly created folders that I can delete, or whether these are corrupted folders that have signs to believe this the case? I havent tried recuva yet since I believe this is only useful for directories deleted that are in a recoverable and readable state. Any similar suggestions of usefull tools for recovery?

Thanks, BurtonThey aren't 'scrambled characters', they are 'hex strings', and the mrt.exe program files are the Microsoft Malware Removal Tool. (mrt is not the extension - .exe is the extension). They are not dangerous and it is safe to delete them. You may wish to keep the most recent such folder.

Solve : audio crackles when video is being played?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I just recently clean installed windows 7 on a machine I built myself and now every time I play videos on the web on full screen I get crackles from the sound. Youtube crackles a little bit when opening a video into fullscreen and then quitens down when I stop MOVING the mouse but other sites with video crackle all the time, like 40d or any other video STREAMING sites. EVEN windows media player crackles when I'm playing music with visualizations in full screen or small screen.

Watching videos in vlc THOUGH do not give crackles in full screen or small screen.

I have tried updating my graphics card which is a Nvidia GeForce 8400s updating the sound from the built in motherboard (ASUS P5b-vm se) but still nothing. Sound was working fine until I clean installed windows 7. I've checked all the cables many times but I still can't figure it out, any suggestions?

ThanksCrackling is the connection/wires/speakers...
Can you borrow another pair of speakers to test ? ?I tested the speakers using just an mp3 player and the speakers and they worked fine. Sound works fine, it's just that when there is full screen video with it that it crackles. I thought it was a problem with the cpu being overloaded but I checked task manager and the cpu percentage usage is low around 10%. I also ran DPC Latency checker and it reported very high latency.Well i'm not sure what's causing it...but i cannot see latency issues producing a crackling sound at all...

Best of Luck.I have seen USB Powered Speakers do this before... Are these speakers powered off of USB? If so its noisy 5V power at USB port. Solution then if this is the case to get one of those power packs that allow you to charge USB devices off of them and plug speaker USB power into one of these to power the 5V to speakers.

Systems using this USB powered speaker setup also experience noise when moving mouse and speakers are max volume with nothing playing. You will get noise from the mouse communications causing a ripple to the speakers which are powered on the USB port along with mouse.
Hi thanks for you suggestions, I SOLVED the issue.

The speakers were not usb powered but they were powered from the mains.

I read somewhere that updating the bios could help, I updated it and it was solved.A BIOS update fixed crackling speakers ? ?
Another new one on me.

Glad your fixed up...Quote from: patio on October 04, 2012, 03:50:22 PM

A long time ago I got something called 500,000 Games and since then, I've uninstalled it from PROGRAMS and Features. I can't FIND it when listing it through start, and my security (Microsoft Essentials) takes an extremely long time to scan because it's still scanning the FILES from this game.

I have WINDOWS 7.Never mind! While it was scanning the files, I followed the file LOCATION in my start menu. Was able to find it and get rid of the 61,000 files it took up!

I tried to install drivers from NVIDIA. This was the message: NVIDIA Installer cannot continue. This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware. ...
Is this the one you downloaded & tried to install?
GeForce R304 Driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-307.74-whql-driver.html

GeForce 6 series:
6800 XT, 6800 XE, 6800 Ultra, 6800 Series GPU, 6800 LE, 6800 GT, 6800 GS/XT, 6800 GS, 6800, 6700 XL, 6610 XL, 6600 VE, 6600 LE, 6600 GT, 6600, 6500, 6250, 6200 TurboCache, 6200SE TurboCache, 6200 LE, 6200 A-LE, 6200, 6150SE nForce 430, 6150LE / Quadro NVS 210S, 6150 LE, 6150, 6100 nForce 420, 6100 nForce 405, 6100 nForce 400, 6100

You exact hardware can be determined by downloading, installing & running HWInfo: http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html
Check "Summary Only", then Run. Motherboard, graphics card, etc. info are displayed on one page. For more info, close then run again with nothing checked. My monitor is a Westinghouse 22", model LCM-22w3. The resolution that is working best right now is 1280 x 960. The highest it will go is 1280 x 1024. However, the book says it should be set at 1680 x 1050. I don't have that high of a number on my display settings.I am not sure what I tried to download at NVIDIA at this point. I know I only clicked on anything that said 6100. I've been trying so much stuff to get this working correctly again, I'm beginning to get frustrated enough to go ahead and find the money to get someone to look at it. I will do the CCleaner first, though. And the HWInfo also. Thanks!!!!

GeForce R304 Driver

I'm also wondering why Nvidia has another type of driver of different file size and OS support? http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-win7-winvista-32bit-307.74-whql-driver.htmlWhile you're taking steps, as suggested in PREVIOUS posts, to INVESTIGATE and resolve the issue, I can suggest a resolution setting that should give you a display with less distortion. I see on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824255002 that the recommended resolution setting for your monitor is, indeed, 1680 x 1050. Here's a key point in understanding resolution settings; its called "aspect ratio". If you divide 1680 by 1050, the result is 1.6, or the ratio of width to height, in pixels. So, if you have a setting that provides an aspect ratio of 1.6, you have a setting that does not cause text and graphics to look distorted. This is why a setting of 1024 x 768 would not achieve this goal; 1024/768 = 1.33, not 1.6.

I'm not suggesting this as a PERMANENT solution. If it were my computer, I would still want to get the issue resolved. I think you'll most enjoy your monitor if you get this problem resolved and can set resolution at 1680 x 1050, as it should. A resolution width of 1680 gives you "more real estate", or, in other words, more SPACE to, for example, have windows for two programs up on your screen side by side. And, LCD monitors usually display the sharpest, clearest test at the maximum resolution.
Been following this one awhile...i suspect that early on if Font size settings were changed at one point...along with registry settings something's amiss....so who knows what it could be ...
That card supports that monitor's resolution so i'm baffled...I'm following all the posts, not been feeling well enough to sit and work on computer. Hopefully tomorrow and I will report back. Thank you all so, so much!

It's dated yesterday, 1/24/2013The other possible software that might have affected the sudden change in your computer is the Arcsoft print. Is Magentic the screensaver you were referring? http://www.magentic.com/splash/splash.aspxTried to download the NVIDIA link you gave me, said "failed" for updates and two other things, but the driver seems to have gotten installed.

Also Magentic screensaver referred to has been on my computer for years as my screensaver. I downloaded a desktop "aquarium" from Free Screensavers.

Solve : ASUS AI disables startup programs?

Answer»

I installed ASUS AI from my motherboard's DRIVER installation CD, and now every time I turn on my computer and log in, the screen goes black (but the cursor is visible). The only way to get PAST this is to end the explorer.exe process VIA Task Manager and start it up again. It's also disabled COMODO from starting up properly, even though it shows up in MSCONFIG. I don't especially want to uninstall ASUS AI unless I really have to, but is there any other way to resolve this?Quote from: Helpmeh on January 25, 2013, 01:58:18 PM

That's mostly for hardware issues. This is caused by their software. I checked out their forum, same thing too. It's all about their hardware. So it might have actually been Folding @ HOME that did it. I uninstalled that and (other than the black screen, which goes away) everything starts up properly.

Solve : SystemRestore will only show one restore point & that's deleted on reboot?

Answer»

Ever since I install Windows 7 Ultimate, I have not been able to retain any resore points. On initial boot-up I get an automatic resore point established but if I reboot, it disappears! Same if I manually set one. I've tried about every solution I can think of and nothing works. Any fresh ideas would be welcomed. You know, I'm just not a fan of System Restore. When it works it's great, but there are just too many TIMES it fails just when you need it most. I stopped using system restore years ago and started using disc imaging software on a REGULAR basis. For my money it's the best possible backup solution an it's essentially foolproof. You might want to look into it.Hi Allan...I agree with you and I do use an image backup software to backup my INFO to an external drive. It just bugs me that I can't figure out why System Restore won't work on this MACHINE. I have an identical computer that I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a couple of weeks after this one and it works fine! Go figure! I would just like to figure this problem out and fix it if possible. Thanks for the quick come back.
Ed
The only thing I can think of is that there may not be enough space allotted to system restore. But when all is said and done, if this is the only problem with your system I really wouldn't worry about it.I've got 5% allotted on a 1G hard drive, I think that's more than enough. You're right about not worrying about it but it's those little nit-picky things that bug me. I'll keep plugging away at it though.

Solve : HD Wiped clean and can I just install Windows 7 OS and start from scratch??

Answer»

Hi there,
I've just successfully cleaned my hard disk with WipeDisk software.
I meant to throw the PC and I throw away the recovery CD etc.
Now, my husband's PC is getting frail and as my PC has better spec than his, we starting to think about re-using it.
Could I just buy WINDOWS 7 OS and START from SCRATCH to revive the PC?
PLEASE help. Thanks!

PC: HP Pavilion A6422 Desktop
intel Core 2 Duo processor E4600
RAM 3GBhttp://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/products/system-requirementsThank you for your reply. I think my PC satisfies the system requirement.
Please let me know if I could go AHEAD and buy the OS and install it OK?
Thanks!I don't want to be the one responsible for you spending your money, but if you say your system meets the minimum requirements I can't see any reason why you should not go ahead and do it. Just make sure there are Windows 7 compatible drivers available for all of your hardware (including a chipset driver) before you buy it.

Solve : Are too many processes slowing my computer??

Answer»

I'm using a Toshiba P200 laptop, and lately it seems to have become rather slow. I've looked on windows task manager, and even when I'm not doing anything else there are still over sixty processes going on. Is that normal or is that what's slowing it down? If so, how do I know which processes it's safe to end, if any? Even when I'm not doing anything it says my CPU usage sometimes creeps up to 20% or more, and my physical memory will be at 40% or so (on the performance tab). Again, is that normal? Or is it a sign of my computer geting old?

If I'm only WANTING to use one program, would it be effective to make it a priority? I assume you can do that in manager?1) Please explain your problem in detail. Exactly WHAT is slow? What are the specific symptoms you are experiencing?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) Have you RUN full scans with BOTH your anti virus app and MalwareBytes? If not, please do so now.I'm going to run some more checks, and will get back to this thread with the results, cheers.I've done a scan with AVG antivirus and found nothing. No new software or hardware has been installed
Speedwise the problem is twofold.
1. Webpages loading slower than they used to.
2. I use a 3d art program called DAZ3d Studio. My computer can only use it in a basic way because it requires a lot of processing power, so I don't expect it to be "speedy", but at the moment it has been running a lot slower than it used to.

Any ideas ANYONE?I asked you to also scan with MalwareBytes. Please do so.

So the problem is not system-wide, but rather specific to two apps - your browser and DAZ3d. Let's look at the browser first. Please try any other browser than the one you normally use and see if the problem persists.

As for the second problem, you can try a selective startup and see if either there are unnecessary processes loading with the OS or if something in specific is conflicting: Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and TYPE: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

A scan for malware detected six threats "if that's the right term" and got rid of them. Things have since speeded up. For the 3D softwre I altered it from normal to high priority, and that has helped.

I'm not going to start with the msconfig stuff until I know more about it, as I'll probably do something wrong and mess my system up or explode the computer or something.

One thing I've noticed recently is that almost every time I boot up the computer there's a little icon near the volume icon at the bottom, that says "windows is downloaing updates) along with % complete. This slows down everything until it's finished. I know updates are USEFUL, but should it really be doing it this regularly? Surely I don't need updates several times a week?

There's nothing to mess up. Just follow the instructions in my post above. Or not. It's up to you. If the system seems to be running properly now, that's fine.I'm going to leave things for now, but I will refer back to this thread if - or rather when - things slow down gain.

Cheers for your advice.Quote from: Steve M on January 24, 2013, 04:47:11 AM

This is abnormal. Microsoft normally releases Windows Updates once a month, unless some urgent security fix can't wait. Are you sure the update notice you're seeing is for Windows Updates? When you see this, do you, as far as you know, allow the computer to finish installing the updates?

What other programs (antivirus, anti-malware, etc.) do you have installed that alerts you to updates? Is this your laptop specs?

Complete any pending Windows update except for some optional updates which is sometimes not needed. @soybean: As far as I know it is windows updates and is far more often than once a month. However, as you mentioned, it may be that I'm somehow interrupting the updates without realising. Next time it appears I'll stop using the computer all together until it's finished.

@jason2074: That does seem to be my specs as far as I know. I've used AVG for years and am reluctant to replace it, but would other antivirus software run alongside it or conflict with it? I also use Spybot- search and destroy. If you're running the TeaTimer feature of Spybot S&D, try disabling it or even removing it. It can slow your system. References: http://www.ehow.com/how_5385338_remove-teatimerexe.html, and http://www.ehow.com/how_4925001_delete-spybot-search-destroy-teatimer.htmlAVG has been known to be a system source hungry software with all the bundled features and has lower detection rate compared to MSE. Adding up to your problem is Spybot which is not highly recommended nowadays. AVG + Spybot means trouble IMO atleast from past experience. You can run once and delete certain threats using this http://general-changelog-team.fr/en/tools/15-adwcleaner and use free spywareblaster in place of spybot.

Solve : Change/Toggle fn key functions??

Answer»

I am running Windows 7 on an HP Vision laptop. The model is Pavilion dv6 (full name: Pavilion dv6-2010us Entertainment Notebook.)

Hi. I just got a new laptop about a week ago. I use it for a variety of things but one of those is gaming. Unfortunately, the fn key make it harder for me to play. As in several games, the f keys (f1, f2, ETC) are used for hot key skill bars. My problem is that on this laptop the f keys only work like that when pressing the fn key. If I don't press the fn key, a different effect takes place. For example, my f3 key brightens the screen when fn is not held. My f10 increases volume and f11 mutes. All 12 have a different function when fn isn't pressed. I've never had a laptop before (my old comp is a 2005 windows XP Emachine desktop) but I used my mom's a bit and I know that fn causes different functions. However, on my mom's laptop the f keys work as f keys when the fn button is NOT held and affect volume and other things when fn IS held. In other words, the exact opposite of mine. This presents a problem in gaming as I have to either hold the fn key down a lot or click the hotkey bar ICONS which is much slower.

My question is, is there a way to toggle fn key functions or to change it in anyway so I can access the f keys more easily?

I have tried repeatedly searching the internet, checking the manual that came with the computer, checking the help sections in my computer, and look around in the control panel but I can't FIND anything about it. I was able to find some info when looking on the internet but it involved a num lock key which my comp doesn't seem to have. I only see a caps lock. No num or scroll lock.

Here is a picture of my laptop's keyboard. I'm sorry it's a bit blurry. It was the best picture I could get. http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/1589/1000551e.jpg

I understand it's a bit hard to see the key names in that picture. I'll type in the name of every key, if need be.

Please & thank you.I seem to remember my laptop doing the same THING when I got it. I think the setting for it was in the bios.
Start up your laptop and hit F2 or Del when the laptop first starts up and before windows starts. There is usually a prompt for it. Browse through the bios and look for SOMETHING that relates to Fn or function keys.Thank you very much for your fast response! The problem has been solved now.

I tried doing f2 like you said and I came on some different menu thing where all I could click to test certain system things. I did see the message about hitting f2 before I did it as well. However, I could find anything on the fn key. I tried again, planning on trying delete, but I noticed a different message this time that said to press escape for system menu. It was here that I found a way to reverse the fn key functions so that the f keys are the default.

This will make playing games much easier. Thank you so much!my Fn key is locked on. How do I make it function only when I need it?

There two DHCP servers on your network.

DHCP stands for "Dynamic Host Control Protocol". DHCP servers hand out (manage) IP addresses for network PCs and devices that have DHCP clients. In other words this service gives PCs and other devices the ability to automatically obtain and reserve IP addresses.

The error is saying that the device at 192.168.0.1 (which is probably a router) has a DHCP Server running and the device (probably a PC) at 192.168.0.85 tried to start a DHCP server but shut down because it found one running already.

If you have or had that PC/Server (the one at 192.168.0.85) enabled for connection sharing you should disable that on the PC as most people RELY on their routers' DHCP Server to manage IP addresses for their home network.

I have a more complex network and RUN multiple servers. One of them is configured as a DHCP server. So with that configuration I need to disable the DHCP server on my router.

Solve : Batch File in WinPE?

Answer»

I am using a batch file to image machines using WinPE and Imagex. Currently I have a batch file which works on some machines but not on others. This is because the 2nd flash, which contains the Image file (filename.wim) is not always the same drive letter.

What I would like is for my batch file to find the drive using a search for the image file, then perform a DIR of this drive so that the filename is visible.

This is what I've written, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I look forward to your thoughts. THANKS!!

for %%i in (C D E F G H I J K) do if exist %%i:\*.wim set IMAGEDISK=%%i:
%IMAGEDISK%:
dirTo switch to a drive you need a letter and one colon.

Salmon...uh ok. Perhaps I haven't made this clear. I KNOW how to switch to a drive using one letter and one colon. HOWEVER, due to the way WinPE boots, the flash drive in question (along with other constraints) can be any of C, D, E, F, G, H, I etc. The LINES I have POSTED are what I am sure will find this drive letter for me. ( I have used this in other areas of the batch file to copy a particular file by name.)

So, again, I'm looking for someone with BATCH FILE experience in helping me debug these lines...

Does that say it better?Maybe I should have underlined or otherwise emphasised the word 'one'. I thought I'd lead you subtly to look at your CODE again, rather than jump right in and point out your glaring mistake. I see that was a waste of time. I have been writing batch files for MS-DOS since the early 1980s, and for the improved cmd.exe command interpreter since Windows 2000. I think that may count as "BATCH FILE EXPERIENCE". Since you felt inclined to get shouty in CAPITAL LETTERS I may be forgiven for a little sarcasm.

Here's your error:

I'll break down your script. Let's assume that the .wim file you are looking for is on drive G.

1.

for %%i in (C D E F G H I J K)

Iterate through those letters...

2.

do if exist %%i:\*.wim

... and for each one create an IF EXIST test, substituting each letter in turn for %%i, add a colon, a back slash, an asterisk, a dot and 'wim'. This test will be satisfied when %%i expands to G (when there is something that matches G:\*.wim) so...

3.

set IMAGEDISK=%%i:

now we create a variable called IMAGEDISK and set it equal to G plus a colon. See that colon? You should. You wrote it. At this stage %IMAGEDISK% will expand to G: OK? With me so far? Do stop me if this is getting too complex.

4. Now we are finished with the FOR command, and we go to the next line, where we find...

%IMAGEDISK%:

That is, the variable %IMAGEDISK% all ready to be expanded (to G: remember?), together with another (second) colon. Do you see that second colon? (Also written by you.) The effect of this is just the same as if you had written G:: instead.

A letter plus two colons will give rise to a syntax error.

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

That is why your script won't work.

Can I have an apology now please?

You can consider yourself very LUCKY I even bothered to reply after your GREAT rudeness.

Solve : backing up w-7?

Answer»

When backing up your COMPUTER with windows 7 would that be
backing up just the operating system?Would a flash drive be just
as effective? Or would system restore be same?Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use ACRONIS True Image. It is the best of breed, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is MACRIUM Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (installing a service pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have ONE.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.
thanks I'll try that free one

Solve : Copy a folder without CMD or crtl + C?

Answer»

I'm trying to copy a folder to My documents, I don't have access to the folder and every time I try to open it I get "Access to C:\my document\ is not an allowed recourse" (Bad and roughly translation) They have disabled CMD and removed the right click on files/folder and on the DESKTOP. I can write files to it. I'm trying to save progress of a game that saves in "C:\my document\My Games", if I save a file in "save as..." I can see the my documents folder and the save files are in there, so I can save and read files to the location but can't move it.

So I got limited access but I can run programs from an USB device. So if anyone knows a program that can moves files I can probably use that. So I want to copy a folder from "E:\" to "C:\my document\" forth and back (I have access to "E:\"(as in I can open that folder)) This is a Local Hack to get elevated privileges... if you do this and get caught you could get into trouble. Perform at own risk! Some bosses will fire you if you bypass security even if locally at the computer! Guessing this is a corporate computer.

Boot system off of Knoppix Live Linux CD or DVD. This will give you admin privileges to C: to read/write and retrieve your game. Knoppix has USB drivers so you can copy from C: to whatever letter USB is such as E: etc.

The only way this wont work if is the drive is encrypted. If its a regular windows build without drive encryption, you can read/write to any part of C:.

So I have to restart the computer every time I want to copy the folder? I think I can access Safe mode (unless it's password protected), so I guess I can copy the folder by doing that. I don't know if I want that much trouble to do that. I was thinking of using Dropbox to sync the "My games" folder in my documents, don't know if it's works tho.

I don't think I can get "caught" because this isn't a job, and it's more like school I guess. So security is close to none.

Oh, forgot to say that I don't have access to windows search, so stuff like msconfig, dxdiag and those programs I haven't found a way to START yet. Even the task manager won't work. Why don't you talk to the folks that own the PC ? ?Quote from: patio on October 10, 2012, 07:02:25 AM

The "school" that I go on don't own the computers, they hire a other company that update and (try) to keep them working with some remote access. And the chance that they will allow us to open My documents is 0%.Then to me it sounds like they actually don't want you to do what you are attempting to do...Quote from: patio on October 10, 2012, 08:09:57 AM

Well it's more for the security, so people don't install virus and delete system files. And I don't think that they would care if you backup your save files. Because I guess it's much harder to change where the game is suppose to save the save files then just copy a folder? Then...as i stated before...you need to ask them directly...Quote

You can get caught! And if its a college you could get kicked out! I was warned!
The 2 colleges I attended remember me. I and my friends Tim and GEORGE assumed they wouldnt care if we did some things as long as we put stuff back the way it was and put stuff back that we borrowed for on campus projects. There is a Hackers book that a friend gave me to borrow with a broken pencil with electronic parts sticking out of the fractured pencil on the cover, which made me laugh when I found out that others before me took it upon themselves to alter and borrow hardware from other locations on campus without approval. I was fortunate that I didnt get kicked out of college for some of it, especially the computer that was in the hallway on its side for a week that looked like trash and the college noticed it missing and were going to investigate. I borrowed it for a project in my lab and had it opened up and other guts added etc to make it a server. I was TOLD to immediately put it back to the way that it was and return it to them.I can't get kicked out. it's not really school. It's an independent cooperation that was hired by the guys who help people that don't have a job aka former students and other. And they have guys speaking and gathering contacts to help people find jobs and give speeches to students.

Also this is just copy a file, not be like Greenpeace and take a ladder, climb over a fence and then run straight in to 3 different nuclear power plants and play hide and SEEK for 40+ hours with the cops. Tobe honest it's quite hilarious, and a lite scary if it wasn't Greenpeace and they had a bomb....

Solve : iTunes being blocked?

Answer»

Hi Guys and Gals. I'm not sure in which forum this is supposed to be posted. I hope I'm in the correct one. My daughter downloaded and installed iTunes on her Vista laptop running MSE AV and WINDOWS Firewall. She cannot open iTunes because it keeps getting blocked by something. Some of the messages she's RECEIVING are:

IPv4TCP 127.0.0.1:49323(5354) Bonjour Service (1) Disable AllIncoming
IPv4TCP 127.0.0.1:49325(27015) MobileDeviceService Disable AllIncoming

I configured the firewall to allow iTunes and Bonjour and still get the blocking. I tried disabling the Firewall and MSE and the BLOCKS keep happening. Does anyone know what's going on here?Well, I figured it out last night. Apparently, a program CALLED Vista Firewall Control was loaded on her computer unknowingly. Once it was removed there were no more blockages and iTunes ran without a hitch.
