Solve : CMOS location??

Answer»

I need help finding where my CMOS BATTERY is located. I have an ASUS U43Jc-b1. If anyone KNOW it would be a big help. I have taken many screws out and have removed the keyboard, and I yet to see the battery.

THANK you,
krystalThat's a new ultrabook, why do you need to find the CMOS battery?
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/U43Jc/#supportI was wondering that. Many people think they can reset a BIOS password by REMOVING the CMOS battery, but this is not true. A VISIT to an ASUS dealer with proof of legal ownership is required.

Solve : How to add own filetypes to Windows 8??

Answer»

Hi!

I was searching in Windows 8 Professional for adding or changing preferences of filetypes...

Also to add own filetypes... NOT FOUND....

Can anybody help me? I know that's for me new OS, so maybe is this Q stupid...

My Q is so stupid 'cause I didn't changed OS when here was Vista, only try Windows 7... but after "only try" Windows 8 I see that's very modern OS and XP is for me now not so unexchangeable OS...

Of course at XP 32-bit were 16-bit applications working... I know that I have 64-bit Win8 and it's not possible...

Or Q2: Is possible with any tricks to run 16-bit applications?

Many many thanks for every help, reply or comments...

Miro1st question (file types): On the desktop mode, press Windows-I and then click Control Panel. Click 'Programs' and then 'Default Programs'. Associate a filetype or protocol with a specific program. This is how FAR I got before realizing that the option to add a file TYPE is no longer present. You may have to do it with the registry.

2nd question (16-bit): Windows 64 does not have the software required to run 16-bit apps. You may be able to use a virtual machine or DOSBox, though.Hi!

Thank you for info.. one simple problem found:

To select filetypes is good, but how to add new filetype?

I saw it not there...

In case of 16-bit applications is tip like DOSBox or VM not usable - this method I know, but is unwanted...

Virtual machines (never DOSBox - it's too wrong selection) I'm using for other OS and to try all in case emulated OS...

Simple: need trick how to enable 16-bit apps running in 64-bit Win8... (maybe neverendning story)...

Also Win8 features message which appears in some cases of special applications "No able to run in Win8" - this is more important than 16-bit apps...Not gonna happen...simple answer.Hi!

Ok, I created new filetype by registry editor.

Then is possible to associate it with program.

But anything is missing: is possible to change other icon than default?

This I can't to do.

Many thanks for everything.

MiroIn the registry, there are (basically) one or two main keys for a file association; I'll use my jpg association as an example.

Key 1. The .jpg key.
Key 2. The IrfanView.jpg key (named after the image viewer I use)

NOTE: Key 1 (.jpg) has a (Default) value that contains "IrfanView.jpg"

Key 3. Key 2 (IrfanView.jpg) has a subkey called DefaultIcon.

Key 3 has a (Default) value containing the following: "C:\Program Files (x86)\IrfanView\i_view32.exe,0"
everything before the comma is the icon filename, and the number after the comma is which icon in that file to use (usually 0).

Some programs (notably Microsoft Visual Studio) have custom file handlers that read the file to find which icon to use, but you probably don't need to worry about that unless you're trying to edit existing file associations.QUOTE from: MIRKOSOFT on October 10, 2012, 06:28:49 PM

To select filetypes is good, but how to add new filetype?
Same way you do in Windows 7; with some mild Changes.

Win7 (and probably Vista) have almost the same dialog and don't allow you to add files. The purpose of this being that Applications should provide the metadata that tells the system what kind of files they manage, instead of letting the user randomly decide that some file opens with a given program, you choose from a set of programs that are known to be compatible with that file type.

Anyway, I digress. If you want to add a new association, you can use Open With. The first dialog asks if you want to look for an App on the App Store. You can choose "More options" and Either find the application you want in the listing or select "Look for another App on this PC", which opens the standard File Dialog and you can choose the program you want.

Quote
Simple: need trick how to enable 16-bit apps running in 64-bit Win8... (maybe neverendning story)...
There is no trick. If you need to run a 16-bit program, you should be running a 16-bit or 32-bit OS. the 64-bit windows kernel architecture cannot fallback from 64-bit protected mode to 16-bit real mode (or even Virtual 8086 mode).
Quote
Also Win8 features message which appears in some cases of special applications "No able to run in Win8" - this is more important than 16-bit apps...
Some applications are, for lack of a better description, programmed by morons who don't know how to check for versions that are equal or greater than the version they were designed for. As an example, some programs will actually check for Windows 7 by seeing that the Major and Minor versions equal 6 and 10 respectively, which means they will complain in Windows 8. At the same time, some of them even grab the OSVersionName field, and state that, the result being that "this program cannot run on Windows 8".

Like Vista and 7, though, you are probably encountering the dialog about known compatibility issues. Some programs will refuse to run on Windows Vista and 7 because they have known compatibility issues. MS usually only adds those warnings and dialogs if the program can cause serious data loss or application stability problems.Hi!

Change of association by way of Properties of file is always same, not new...
Win8 message is for me very big problem... I used special applications which have not description...
So, is possible to disable it?

Creating new filetypes:

OK, I tried Registry Editor...

After creating extension and assiociation with NOTEPAD new subkeys are added in same system like in WinXP...
My example was TEST extension...
Keys:
TEST_auto_file
|_shell
|___Edit
|___Open

So I tried to add extension description with "My own Test File"
I tried to add it to Default value of TEST key... - not succesfull
I tried to add DefaultIcon:
as value of TEST key... not succesfull
as new key DefaultIcon to its Default ... no succesfull

Can you help me please again?

Many many thanks...Quote from: MIRKOSOFT on October 11, 2012, 12:14:45 PM

DefaultIcon should be a key (NOT a value), with a (Default) Value of the icon path.
Another thing to note is that when you edit file types with the registry you sometimes need to log off and on (or restart explorer) for the changes to take effect.Hi friend!

Thank you, this is what I was not sure...

ALL IS NOW OK... I restarted explorer and everything is OK!

I want to ask only one thing else:

Is possible to change default icon of files which are not yet associated or have not extension?

I don't want to use applications like TuneUp or other...

Many manyyyyyyyyyy thanks!!!!

Solve : Frozen Advent Screen after Win 7 Crash?

Answer»

Hello,

Can you help me with the following problem please?

I have an Advent T9102 and Advent T9308, due to the Advent T9102 being really old and having a few problems and consistently CRASHING, I decided to take the Hard Drive out of it and make use of it in my Advent T9308 and reformat the whole machine and install Windows 7. Due to my Advent T9308 being Windows XP I first upgraded it to Windows Vista to get all the necessary Windows 7 drivers. Everything worked great once upgraded to Windows Vista. I then used my USB stick to install Windows 7.

When I restarted the Advent T9308 I booted the USB stick and it started loading the Windows files, I deleted all the partitions on the hard drives and reformated the drives. The installation screen came up and I followed the screen prompts. When it got to the installing Windows part it SHOT the percentage straight up for the "Copying Windows files" which was odd, but then the "Expanding Windows files" it froze at 1%, I knew it froze because I left it for 30mins and it didn't go up a percentage. I decided to hold the power button for 5 seconds and restart the machine. On restart the machine got stuck on the very first Advent screen, it currently has "Press DEL to run Setup, Press TAB to display BIOS POST Message", but it doesn't matter what button I press on the keyboard nothing loads up??

Obviously no Windows will load up as I deleted the Windows partitions. I am just trying to get the machine to boot up the USB, or, CD so I can install Windows 7, but the machine WONT get past the first screen, just before the post bios screen. The machine fans are spinning, the motherboard light is on, no beeps at start up, if you just listened to it it sounds like everything is ok, but its not GETTING past the Advent first screen??

Any help would be great.

Thanks. Case closed, failed hard drive and RAM stick causing desktop not to post.

Solve : !040 forms?

Answer»

To all who helped -
Sucess!!!! I called up form 1040 and entered infro. I then clicked on " file" and a panel droped down with "save as....". I entered "tax". I then clicked on "DOCUMENTS" and clicked on"tax" and then clicked on "open". This brought up a BLANK form 1040. In the passed I stopped here and asked for help. Today I noticed that this display had "file" in the upper left corner so I clicked on it. This brought a panel up that had "open in Adobe Reader" so I clicked on that. This brought up the form 1040 with the infro I had typed in. I have no idea why I had to go to the extra step but it worked. When something works do not worry, just enjoy. Thanks to all who helped.. Bob Yahoo!truenorthHi -

Solve : HP Pavilion Entertainment low disk space?

Problem started about a month ago I think. Little pop up in bottom right hand corner. HP message stating that my Data (D) drive is running out of space. I clicked options for creating space, aside from deleting many programs I want to keep there's nothing I can do and I have no clue what caused this. With all the GB I have there should not be this issue. The other partitions have plenty of space. Can I move things from this one to another???
Are you sure that D partition is not the recovery partition? Use this http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml to scan D drive then post the most populated directories.

Download MiniToolBox and select all options.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.Quote from: Sylverkitti on December 21, 2012, 07:27:32 PM

As jason implied, D is often reserved for the recovery partition; most new systems are configured this way. So, you should not be using D for any other purpose.

Windows 7 and Vista include a built-in functionality in Disk Management to shrink and expand partitions. SEE http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/resize-a-partition-for-free-in-windows-vista/ for a tutorial.
Here's HP's Fix...I am sorry for the huge delay. I had a close family member pass away and life has been a mess.

I have too much on here to understand it. I have an OS Partition, Recovery Partition, and a Data Partition. I am now trying to use the link you gave me here a bit ago

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]OK...D: is NOT your recovery partition...open it up in Windows Explorer and do some housekeeping...backup movies pics music etc. to CD/DVD...
Get rid of any data /apps you dont need on there etc.
If you open it in Explorer post a screenshot like the one above so we can have a looksee.Yeah I knew it wasn't recovery, I am still baffled by all the necessary partitions. Its a first for me. I downloaded and used the said link but cannot find a make report thing. So I screen SHOT it.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I did just now see your post on HPs "fix" but that appears to be for Vista. Will it still apply to me, or is there one for win 7 I don't want to mess things up furtherForget the HP fix i POSTED...
Thats for the recovery partition being reported as full...not your issue in this case.

Seems everything on D: is HP and Windows backups of your system.

Solve : Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit - RAM installed 6 GB but usable only 2.58 GB?

Answer»

I have problem about RAM

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit - RAM installed 6 GB but usable only 2.58 GB

my laptop first has 2 GB of RAM and I add 4 GB after install Windows7. Do I have to Reinstall Windows to get 4 GB usable RAM as limit in 32 bit Windows

Task manager SHOW like this

You will need a 64 bit ver. of Windows to utilise 6G of RAM...
It should still be reporting approx. 3.5G of RAM though...not 2.5G.

Where did you purchase the RAM ?Quote from: patio on January 19, 2013, 07:45:11 AM

1. I will try to install 64 bit later. But still wonder why 32 bit report only 2.5 GB
2. I bought from computer SHOP in Thailand

thank you

Ps. Bios also see 6 GBthe 32-bit Windows kernel is limited to 4GB of Physical Memory, not for any technical reason- just because MS set it that way. (well there are some technical reasons related to drivers, but that's not important here).

Anyway, that limit means the TOTAL physical, addressable memory is 4GB. This has to include the Mapped I/O addresses for installed hardware. For Most systems, this results in 3.5GB of usable memory.

If you have an integrated graphics card, they use System Memory as their VRAM, so if your integrated Graphics adapter is set to 1GB of VRAM, you will only see 2.5 with a 32-bit OS.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 19, 2013, 08:33:05 AM

The limit is a limit on Physical memory. If you have less than the physical limit installed, than the hardware guff is simply mapped into memory beyond your physical memory. The reason having 4GB approaches this problem is that there is no other PLACE for that hardware mapping to go except by replacing existing Memory space.

Solve : obnoxious issue with Windows Media player?

Answer»

I've been ripping songs from my personal CD collection to MP3 both yesterday and today. Everything seemed to be going smoothly but then I noticed that songs which I had changed the file's name mysteriously reverted to their original file names. This is thoroughly aggravating!! >:/ I re-name the files to the names and numerical number I wanted them to have then noticed later that they again reverted the original number and file name. UGH!! Why does this keep happening!?

I have Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows 7. I think the WMP is the version which came with the computer but I can't be sure. A "fix I read on the internet suggested removing check mark from "Rename music files using rip music settings" box under options menu but I found this box already WAS un-checked.

edit: it seems I have WMP version 12WMP has never been as polished as it could be. You will have a better experience with third party tag editors.

My favorite (i have tried many): http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

If you want an all in one then check out www.mediamonkey.com

VLC is also a great option but ease of use is not always one of it's strong points IMO.Quote from: haus_kat on October 29, 2012, 06:19:30 PM

Everything seemed to be going smoothly but then I noticed that songs which I had changed the file's name mysteriously reverted to their original file names.

Exactly where are you attempting to change the name? In Windows Media PLAYER or on the file itself in Windows?

If you're changing it in Windows Media Player, this will not change the file name and WMP will likely revert to the actual file name.

Evilfantasy's suggestion will help you get the tag set. I agree, WMP has terrible support for tag editing.Sorry late reply - on the east coast and just got power back after Sandy - ugh. I was changing files names of the mp3s in the Windows folders and they changed back - several times. It seems every time I change the file's name it will revert when I'm not looking. Re-visit Quaxo's reply above...

In order to change the Meta data on the file and have it retained you'ld need a different media player...
MediaMonkey will do this...and there is a Free version.I'm not changing any meta data - only trying to change the file's name to add the artist's name before the song title (in an album with several songs by different artists). This problem is irritating as I have dozens of CDs and took songs from each one and some only ripped as "track 01" etc. and now the artist's name/song titles I painstakingly typed in place of that have been changed back to "track 01" - on dozens of songs >:/

If WMP will not allow e to have my music the way I want I'd cheerfully dump such a useless program in place of a better one. I downloaded a few different "freeware" rippers but none were any good. I need one that will be simple and easy to use and allow me to rip CDs to 320 MP3s.Why don't you just change the metadata in your media program? Changing the filenames won't change the Artist and Title as seen by media players...
If it's that big a deal use a program that lets you reorganize media files based on the tags, such as MediaMonkey.I'm doing a huge project for a friend from the CDs and they are his. He had over a hundred CDs and I don't know this type of music so I would not know which song or artist any of them were if the file names were changed. He was with me at my house at the time I posted the original post and was instructing which songs he wanted from each disc and I numbered them in the order he wanted them in the folders so they'd be in that order when we burned them to CDs. I need them to have their correct artist and title like I'd typed them to print the tracklist for each disc. He doesn't have a computer and doesn't know how to use them so he has me do mixes for him sometimes but I'd never before done it in this manner. Usually we just have downloaded MP3s of songs that were ripped from vinyl records so this file re-naming was never any issue.

I wanted the file names to stay the way I put them so we'd know which songs were which. This project was taking a long time to be getting songs from many individual discs and by the time we realized this was happening we had several files then and didn't know which songs were which and kept having to LISTEN to them and re-name the files only to find they'd reverted to original titles every time we went back to the folders. Meta data is irrelevant as I won't be listening to the music myself on any computer and my friend is an older man who does not own, nor know how to use, computer or MP3 players. He'll be playing the custom mixes on his on CD player and looking at printed paper tracklist while he listens, as he always does.

Have you tried MediaMonkey yet as i suggested above ? ? ..You CHOSE to let MM be the DEFAULT media player during install. Too few people actuall PAY attention during install processes.

You can change the defaults back. See here

Are you trying to change the meta-data on the CD itself or on the saved files on the computer?

Solve : Used space/free space on HDD erroneous readings?

Answer»

Running VISTA home premium 64-bit with 600GB HDD. When I open "Computer" it shows graphically and numerically the used and free space on my drives. C - normally shows 310 GB free of 585 GB, D - Factory image - 1.47 GB free of 11.1 GB, K - HP Pocket media drive 237 GB free of 465 GB. The problem I am having applies only to C, with the others remaining unchanged. The graphical representation of free/used space is in blue and white normally. Here is the problem. The last couple of weeks when I open"Computer", I sometimes get C - 50.6 GB free of 585 GB and the graphical representation is in red, not blue. I GOT an error message the other day that I did not have free space to do what I wanted to do. When I checked free space it was showing, in red, free space of 50 GB instead of the normal 300 plus GB. As soon as I reboot the free space is shown as the correct amount - 300 plus GB. Anyone know what is going on and how I correct it?

I have ATTACHED two screen captures showing "Computer," one with the problem and the other immediately after rebooting.

Every time i try to open a program it comes up with the message "To open this file, windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can select from a list of programs on you computer".

So I can get internet and i managed to restore games i downloaded in steam, which is all good so i thought try iTunes I'll just open iTunes with iTunes. WELL that was a mistake not only does it not work but all programs except for the ones i fixed attempt to open with iTunes. Whats more the situation is made worse by the fact that i cant access control panel or open the programs list. PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN!!!HI. Are you running WIN XP or Win 7?

The first option I would suggest is to check if you are lucky enough to have had Win Autocreate restore points prior to any of the installs/uninstalls and restore to one of them.

Solve : Going from Win 7 to Win 8?

Answer»

I am seriously considering Windows 8 for my desktop (currently have Win 7).

Has anyone done this, and after using Win 8, any regrets?

Is it really worth it?It's probably not worth just upgrading to Windows 8 because it's there, but if you get a new PC after October 26 it will likely have windows 8 on it anyway. Windows 8 has the new Windows 8 interface (previously Metro) and Windows Store Apps, a new File Explorer (renamed from Windows Explorer and with a newer interface), and better touchscreen support.Unless you just want to try out the brand new system or are a power-user, I'd say STAY with Windows 7. Windows 8 is still pretty much beta software and I've heard similar horror stories to when vista came out. 7 is stable, stay with it unless you want to rock the boat.Quote from: ninjatex on October 11, 2012, 02:46:38 AM

No it's not. That's ridiculous.

Funny, all the Vista related "horror stories" and problems people had could be easily pinned on the user either expecting it to work exactly like their previous OS, or the user already hating Vista to begin with.

You could set up a dual boot between Windows 7 and Windows 8. That way if you have regrets you just uninstall 8.

Personally I'm not updating to Windows 8 on my desktop, because it feels like I pretty much just got windows 7 on it.Re: Vista

Not looking to get into an argument here as it's not incredibly important, but Microsoft is known to PUT out OPERATING systems that are basically not ready for widespread use yet and a classic example of this is Vista. They put out vista and gave hardware certifications "Compatible with Vista" to hardware is wasn't actually compatible with. I know vista is a horror show because I do computer repair and saw computer after computer come in that had problems that were very specific to vista. It's obviously a lot more stable now but for the first year or so it was a nightmare to maintain and do support for. Examples of this were bluescreens on hardware that XP had no trouble supporting, inability to find drivers, updates that broke previously working systems, updates that came out in such an order that you had "update gridlock" and had to roll back updates to manually install updates in the correct order, hard drive types that weren't supported for pretty much no reason etcQuote from: ninjatex on October 13, 2012, 01:42:34 AM

I am seriously considering Windows 8 for my desktop (currently have Win 7).

Has anyone done this, and after using Win 8, any regrets?

Is it really worth it?
Windows 8 is a touch screen capable OS; so, it's a major shift in the direction Microsoft is going with Windows. Do you have a touch-capable monitor? If not, then why get Windows 8? Couldn't agree more...

It's the migration of a smart phone to a PC and IMHO will be viewed as a huge mistake...Being a moderator on a Windows 8 forum has been a huge eye opener.
The GENERAL public has no clue how to install and evaluate a new OS like Windows 8.
We tell them exactly how to download and install the Beta Test versions and they turn around and do exactly what we tell them NOT to do.
Then they come on the forum and want to know why things are not working for them. Cheeech!

Windows 8 is a totally new OS, designed for touch screens, tablet PC's and smart phones. It has a desktop, but NO start button or start menu, as we've come to know it. You must install some third party software like the "Classic Shell" to restore the start button and start menu and make the program useful to old time PC users, familiar with XP, Vista or Win-7.

Putting it on a desktop PC is a total waste of time and money. Windows 7 is much better suited for that purpose.
I've been testing Win 8 in every test version since the beginning of the year and I see nothing in it that would make me want to buy it for a desktop PC, or even a laptop or Netbook. It could however be useful on a tablet PC.

It does require less resources than Win-7 and has been reported to run faster. I don't see that on my own PC, because I have mine, both XP and win-7, tweaked and tuned for maximum performance.

I'm preparing a package of tweaks, scripts and programs, like Classic Shell, to help my customers, who buy a new PC with Win-8, to be able to run their new PC with the LEAST possible problems. There is even a fix for Windows Mail, to make it work on Win-8, for those old folks who have used Outlook Express for the past 12 years or so, and want an email program that looks and acts the same.

Only after Oct 26, when the new Windows 8 PC's start selling in the stores will we know for sure how this will all play out.
It should be interesting, if nothing else.

Cheers Mates!

Install 3dmark 2011, runs fine. Do other things, then try to download another program and install then it freezes again!. Download BIOS update and install, everything runs fine for about 1.5 HOURS then try to download itunes... it happens again. I look up the even log: http://i.imgur.com/IyVwx.png http://i.imgur.com/yU8M5.png http://i.imgur.com/DMGv3.png so I get these errros, and I decide to reinstall windows from scratch again. Do everything as before and same thing happens. I google the ERRORS, and I come up with some microsoft mrfixit program or something that would help with this issue, did it and the problem persisted. Then I installed windows pro 68bit, and the problem still persist. PLEASE help, I already did bios update, installed different drivers for graphics, multiple reformats, ran Western digital lifeguard diagnostics and came back normal, did MS updates, MS fix for it, ran 3dmark 11 several times succesfully, and now running memtest.

The limit of 255 characters for Windows XP or 260 character limit for Windows Vista applies to the entire filepath and not just the filename.

That's a Windows (Explorer & API) limitation. To be exact, 260 characters for a file path+name, which includes drive letter, colon, separating slashes and a terminating null character. The NTFS file system SUPPORTS paths up to about 32767 Unicode characters with each path component (directory or filename) up to 255 characters long. Of course, the question still remains, how to create, in Windows, an entity whose path is longer than 255 characters? That is a theoretical type of issue, (some software can do this) WHEREAS the practical advice for the OP might be to check the total path length, that is, drive letter, and its following colon plus all folder names, the file name, and the slashes separating them. There is nothing ILLEGAL about this folder name:

Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 15, 2012, 11:35:34 AM
The limit of 255 characters for Windows XP or 260 character limit for Windows Vista applies to the entire filepath and not just the filename.
Win32's ANSI file access functions are limited to a total path length of 260 Characters (MAX_PATH). However, the unicode versions of these functions can support paths with up to 32767 Wide characters, but only if the PROGRAM accessing the file prepends the name with "\\?\". NTFS limits individual components of a filename to 255 characters.

However if the full path/filename exceeds MAX_PATH, then the ANSI versions of functions (which many programs still call) will fail for such paths. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, NTFS limits the length of each component of a file to 255 characters, because the NTFS "NameLength" field is a byte. This applies to each component, rather than the full path, as near as I can tell. (I reach this conclusion because a program can be written to deal with filename well in excess of the filename limit).

Explorer caps out at MAX_PATH (~260 characters) inexplicably. Well, not inexplicably, since that is MAX_PATH, but I find it odd that Explorer would be reliant on the ANSI versions of the File API Functions, which are kept around mostly for ease of porting 9x programs.

Basically, the solution is to either choose a shorter name, or choose a shorter name for the parent folders within that file/folder. Optionally, you could try a different file manager, though I think the former is a better option (not to mention it's very possible that media players and other programs might not be written to take advantage of the increased name limitations provided in later versions of the File Access APIs).

(EDIT: Ninja'd by Salmon somewhat)
True...but if it's nested 13 folders deep that could be the issue right there....I understand that Cygwin can deal with paths longer than MAX_PATH, so I am going to play around.
WOW, Way beyond my Computer understanding but I was able to resolve the issue anyway. I was trying to create it within my MP3 folder which is on the root of my External Drive. I closed out a few programs I had open and re-booted again and everything was fine again. I really have no idea why it didn't work the first time, but it works now.

Thanks

I would guess that a program had the folder open, so it wasn't able to rename it for you.I was able to rename it without a problem. It just wouldn't let me name it to it's full length.

Solve : Win 7 not installing update?

Answer»

Hello

I see this 'update' (please see attached image) every day and it fails to install. How do I determine which update it is - in Event Viewer do I look into the WINDOWS folder? - and how to force it to install?

I have a Win 7 tower, with Security Essentials installed and the firewall is active. Updates are set to automatic. Anti-virus scans with Security Essentials, Super Antispyware, and Malwarebytes earlier today show no threats. In sfc /scannow I get 'no integrity violations'.

Thanks

High1Your information provided to date does not convince me that your issue with whatever the update is that is creating the message is emanating from a failure of a windows update. However if you have any concerns re the possibility of there being a windows update that you are not able to download you can access the Microsoft Update Catalog site and see if any updates for your computer exist (beyond the ones you already downloaded in the past). Two caveats are necessary to bear in mind. Not all updates Microsoft issues go through the automatic periodic updates process. So you may find some that were not downloaded but are NOT at the root of your update failure message. Also you will need to have a version of Internet Explorer 6 or later. Which unless you have deleted it should be on your computer given the operating system you have.

P.S. It is of course up to you but in case you are not aware there are a variety of personal choices you can permit when it comes to Microsoft updates. Personally i prefer to be advised before the updates are installed and chose the ones i want via a custom install process.
P.P.S. Via the "Catalog route when the 1st window opens type in your operating system (probably necessary to specify 32 or 64 bit). Thanks truenorth

I am using IE8 and updates are set tp 'automatic'. I will go through each error in Events Viewer and try to deal with them one by one.

High1Uhm just to toss my idea in here...By update, do you mean the exclamation (!) point next to Shut Down in the screenshot you provided? Because that symbol does show there is a pending Windows Update.

When you shut down/restart do you get a screen that says something like "windows is configuring updates"? If you do, do you let the action finish?

Have you tried going to Start> typing in "windows update", selecting the Windows Update, and seeing if there are updates there? It should say X Important Updates. X Option Updates. If there are Important updates, try installing them. Note: The optional updates or LANGUAGE packs do not need to be installed for the symbol to disappear.

If there are updates, and you install them, do you receive any kind of error message? If you do, please copy the exact error information and post it.

If I am wrong, sorry! Hope this helps.Hello Mayuukosan

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. yes, I get that 'Configuring updates' message when I shut the PC down and yes, I ALLOW it to shut down itself.

Windows Update error 80070422, 80244019, or 8DDD0018
If you receive one of these errors while downloading updates, the most common cause is a computer virus that has turned off Windows Update, or another service on your computer that is needed by Windows Update. If your computer is infected with a virus, you will need to scan and clean it first, and then restart these services. While your computer might not be infected with a virus, it is recommended that you FOLLOW steps to scan for viruses, and then turn the services on.
To restart in Safe Mode and scan for viruses
When a virus infects a computer, it often blocks the computer's ability to run antivirus programs, or causes those programs to be ineffective. Follow these steps to check and clear any viruses:
1.Restart your computer in safe mode. See Start your computer in safe modefor more information.
2.Scan your computer for viruses.
3.Once you've scanned and removed any viruses, restart your computer.

Notes
•Scanning your computer can take time, and your computer can appear to be frozen or inactive. Allow scanning to complete successfully before continuing.
•Each antivirus program scans and removes viruses differently. Review your antivirus program's Help or documentation for specific instructions.
•If you do not have an antivirus program installed, go to the Windows Vista Security Software Providers website for more information about online scanners or installing another antivirus scanner.
To restart services required by Windows Update
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
1.Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.
2.Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.In the Services window, double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
4.On the General tab, under Startup type, click Manual, and then click Apply.
5.Click the Log On tab, and make sure the service is enabled in every hardware profile listed.
6.Click the General tab, click Start, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
7.In the Services window, double-click Windows Event Log.
8.On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected.
9.Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, click Start, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
10.In the Services window, double-click the Windows Update service.
11.On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected.
12.Next to Service status, check to see if Started is listed. If it is not, click Start, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
13.In the Services window, double-click Software Licensing.
14.On the General tab, next to Startup type, make sure that Automatic is selected.
15.Next to Service status, check to see if Started is listed. If it is not, click Start, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
16.Close the Services window, and try to install Windows updates again.
If you continue to see this error, see this automatic troubleshooter on the Microsoft Support website, or go to the Microsoft Answers website for more assistance.

Solve : USB not-/semi-functional?

Answer»

I did a clean installation of Win7 a month ago, and everything went fine and was perfectly functional. Then one day, with no warning, two of my USB devices decide not to work. One of them has a little blinking light which INDICATES activity, and it reacts like it should, so I doubt the PROBLEM is with the devices themselves or the cables (considering that the two started malfunctioning at the same time, with different devices and different cables). The closest thing I can think of that could have anything to do with the problem was uninstalling my old graphics card drivers and switching to a new one, and even that seems so unbelievably far-fetched, it's not even funny. I've yet to find anything I could use to test if the computer's actually receiving the SIGNAL. All (and I do mean ALL) USB drivers have been uninstalled and reinstalled, I've tried different ports and even system restore didn't affect the problem. I'm completely stumped, and wouldn't WANT to do another clean install before asking for help, since I just got my computer the way I like it.

Any help and ideas will be more than appreciated. One thing you can try is un-install all instances of USB roots and hubs on Device Manager..using right clik on each.

On re-boor Windows will AUTOMATICALLY restore them.Quote from: patio on November 25, 2012, 05:50:31 AM

Solve : Win 7 64 crash ngx 520 Netflix?

Answer»

Title says nit all. I bought a refurbished Dell GX 520 with WINDOWS 78 Pro 64 Bit.
Had to do a reinstall on a new hard drive using key from authorized builder.

I get a lock lock up while l watching Netflix using AT&T FAST DSL.
No error messages.
It is a Pentium Dual Core.
Quote

CPUID CPU NameIntel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz
Windows reports 4 GB of memory.
I am using 32 bit Firefox, 64 bit Silver light.

I am on the GX 520 now using Windows 7 with Firefox and it is stable, But If I go to Netflix it will crash withing 30 min. While watching Nikita.

They say 64 bit Firefox is not ready.
I would like to use this box for Netflix. The sound is better.

Where do I start?.

Does your DSL connection have the required bandwidth?
http://support.netflix.com/en/node/306#gsc.tab=0How much RAM ? ?The bandwidth is 3 mega bit over DSL. Tested.
The RAM is 4GB, which is given as standard on a GX520.
I do not have other things running while watching Netflix.
The Win 7 64 bit is legit and has COA.
The Win 7 was NOT installed by Dell. It was by a certified MS refurbish-er.
Windows 7 used its own drivers. There are no Windows 7 drivers that I can find on the Dell site.

I am open to any suggestions.
Not having the proper drivers would explain it...
There are no Win7 drivers for that model...and not likely to be any.
So you should try all the available Vista drivers...some may work...but no guarantees.
You may have to revert back to XP or Vista to get everything running properly.Yes, it does work in XP pro 32 bit. Which is legit for this machine. The win 7 pro 64 bit is also legit, but I find no specific drivers for this GX 520.

I loaded Vista 64 bit only to find I don't have a wireless that works with it.

Further testing indicates the problem is not with Netflix. Rather the problem is with the media player or the add-on. This might mean a video driver issue.

By the way, this is an old dual core Pentium CPU with a 775 socket. Does anybody here recall any issue that these early dual-core CPU s had? Wasn't there some patch for a NMI bug? Don't remember well.
The patch was for AMD CPU's...
At any RATE you should probably revert back to XP for everything to work properly. Thanks Patio. You are right.
I will just boot XP when I want to watch a movie on Netflix.

Solve : Windows 7 installation help?

Answer»

I need to do fresh window 7 installation in new hard drive, since i am upgrading my pc which has intel p4 631 cedar mill installed, so b4 my new hardware/pc comes i want to save some time and carry out installation of windows 7 64 bit in new hdd using old pc with processor i just mentioned, so that by the time my new pc gets assembled, i ll get straight away option to plug my window7 installed hdd and start immediately.

so is this possible to do it, and if yes does any complication will arise when i will plug that new hdd with 7 64 bit into new hardware and run again.

It's 'portable' until it's installed. The installation determines some various specific components and drivers related to the motherboard such as the HAL. BASICALLY, if you swap out things such as the motherboard, the system will have to "start over". Usually, it won't boot at all.

One way that can often fix it is to do a Repair Installation of the Operating System, but wherever possible it's always best to simply install the OS with the appropriate system board that will be used- this prevents future problems with regard to the License, and sometimes a repair install does make the system bootable in such a case so you have to reinstall anyway.

Solve : Font Size problem?

Answer»

I am having a problem with Font size. I checked out several pages in CH of Font size problems & solutions, however, none of them were quite like MINE.

I have a new computer that was running Windows 7 Home Premium & I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. I have FireFox for a browser and Yahoo for email. The problem is that the Fonts are small in some emails and on my Tool Bars. I went to the Control Panel and changed the Font size from Small to Medium and that worked out fairly well until I decided to use my Print Shop 23.1 program and I got a warning telling me that I would not be able to use some of the aspects of the program due to the change in Font size. The size of the Fonts in some of the emails I get are extremely small even with boost to Medium. When I ran the same Windows 7 Professional, FireFox and Yahoo email on my previous computer, I didn't have this problem. Never had to change from the Small to Medium and the Small was easily read, until the new computer. Is there some setting somewhere that falls in between the Small and Medium that wouldn't affect the Print Shop Program? Thank you,I surmise you bought a new monitor with your new computer and your new monitor has a higher resolution than your old monitor; this will make text look smaller. The plus side is that you can view more on your screen at one time than with the older monitor.

If all your email is webmail, i.e. email accessed by web browser, you can increase font size by pressing (and holding) the Ctrl key on your keyboard while rotating the mouse wheel or by pressing the + or - keys. In other words, this technique PROVIDES a way to zoom in or zoom out.

I'll also mention a Windows 7 feature called Magnifier. For info on using Magnifier, see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-xp/help/turn-on-magnifier

Thank you for your answer, Soybean. I do not have new monitors. I'm still using the same two that I've had through 3 computers. They are flat screen ACER AL1906 & ACER AL1916.

I've done the various keyboard & mouse wheel enlargements, however, that only works on what is in the window and not on the tool bars. What puzzles me is that, other than the new computer, everything I have or done is exactly the same programs and settings I'd used for the 3 previous years, yet the Fonts appear smaller.(?)Quote from: 02bin3 on November 25, 2012, 11:44:14 AM

But, what was your resolution setting with the previous version of Windows and what is it now? I guess I wasn't quite clear when I said that I'd changed it from Small to Medium and Print Shop didn't want to play well with the Medium setting. I did change it back to Small which is what it had been set on any computer I've owned.

The resolution settings now are 1280 x 1024 which is the recommended setting, however, I honestly do not recall what I had them set on before. I'm sure, knowing me, that it was whatever the recommended settings were. I have a dual monitor video card GeForce GT 430 if that makes a difference.

So, you seem to have a software conflict. What do you do with Print Shop? Have you looked at any other programs that can do what you do with Print Shop? Yes, I have looked into finding a program that works as well as Print Shop, short of SPENDING over $500 for Photo Shop, and I don't even know if Photo Shop does what Print Shop does. I did buy Serif, however, it had a wicked learning curve and no clip art. Basically, I use Print Shop for greeting cards and posters. I've looked into others, like Print Artist PLATINUM, however, after reading the BUYER reviews, it sounded like it had a lot of issues that needed correcting. And Print Shop was actually a far better program to use back in 1994 when I bought PS 3.0. Something was lost in the "improvements".

The Font size on my tabs, drop down menus, tool bars, browser, and in many of the emails I receive is about 8 pt. Is this about what it should be for being set on Small? I do not recall that it was that tiny on my old computer when set on the Small setting.

Thank you

Solve : my windows 7 cannot start in normal mode?

Answer»

Hello! This is the first time I GET this sort of problem, yesterday I shut down my computer like normaly, BUT still had my android phone charging (with usb) when the computer did stop. Did not NOTICE until today. I get usb cable off the computer (while it was closed), Start the computer, and BAM the max I can see is the PLACE where we have to log into an user, I click on the icon, and it freezes for ever.

I tried to start the computer in safe mode and it works

Right now i'm trying a FULL scan with Malwarebyte, but I doubt it will help, i'm pretty sure it has something to do with the phone staying plugged to the computer while I shut it down yesterday..

Anyone has an idea / can help ?

Thank you!

i dont think it has anything to do with the phone being plugged in all night un PLUGGING it with out going thru the safe removle may have caused a file to become currupted thus causing the computer to freezeLet's try a couple of things. When the system first starts, tap the F8 Function key until you get to the advanced startup menu, then choose "Last Known Good Configuration". Does that work? If not, boot to safe mode, open msconfig, and on the General Tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three boxes) and reboot. Does that get you to safe mode? If not, open msconfig again and uncheck selective startup. If it DOES get you to regular mode let us know and I'll walk you through the next steps.When the system first starts, tap the F8 Function key until you get to the advanced startup menu, then choose "Last Known Good Configuration". Looks more of a browser issue. Try holding ctrl key and use the mouse scroll wheel DOWNWARD. Holding ctrl+mouse wheel or + is not solution, because;
1. I don't wan't every time use this TOOL on new websites in which I come.
2. Big part of flash games, like from miniclip.com just becomes more black when using this tool.
3. In mozilla firefox you can back to orginal website position by clicking ctrl+0. I mean it shows it is windows orginal resolution or monitor size problem.

Your second method(dpi) is already used by me, it's just changing orginal windows bottom line, tablet icons size and etc.

P.S Maybe it's really monitor size problem ? Because I think my monitor is really old.. made in 2006. But maybe not, I don't know ;/

Solve : Do I have to have a default printer??

Answer»

Hi,
I have 2 programs on my computer and I want them to USE different printers. Can I do this without going to the printer folder and changing the default printer?
Regards
GeofflYou can go to Start, Devices and Printers and right-click the Printer to be used and set as default or try this http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/change-default-printer-for-different-print-jobs/Yes, you have to have a default printer. But, you don't need to change the default printer when you want to use a different printer. Just select the non-default printer you want to use from your print setup panel within the software you're using. Or, get the third-party add-on utility that jason2074 posted; it allows setting different default printers for different printers, which is something Windows does not do. Thank you for that. I didn't think I wuld need another program. I thought MAYBE there was a command I could put in my programs opening bat file to do it. What command is sent when you click 'set as default printer'?
regards
GeofflThere is no WAY to effectively do this without a third-party program. The program recommended in that link (Automatic Printer Switcher) would be the best way to go. It remembers program/file specific settings so that it always prints to the correct printer depending on the file. A batch would only be effective if the program was launched from the batch file, and would need to be switched back for all other programs.

With Automatic Printer Switcher, there's no need to worry about switching it back, printing while multiple programs are open that use different printers, etc. What command is sent when you click 'set as default printer'?
[/quote]

None. Setting the default printer sets the default printer for the current user on the local machine by calling SetDefaultPrinter() in winspool.drv. It is possible as well to set the default printer using a VBScript.

However, I think the idea you are approaching, which seems to suggest making a short script to change the default printer, run the program, and set it back, has a glaring flaw...

setting the default printer sets it for all applications. So if you run the program more than once, the default printer won't change back. And if you try to do it for multiple programs, you'll have almost no idea where you are really setting it, and the entire thing BECOMES a game of musical CHAIRS as the printers are randomly shuffled as the default.

The above program does the job by hooking when other programs use the printer and changing the settings before printing. This would probably do what you like. There is the possible issue about what takes precedence when you change options on the printer setup dialog of an application, but for your use case it's capabilities seem to fit the bill.

Program-specific "default" printer settings are program specific. Some programs will allow you to choose a default for that program, others will not. Thank you all so much for your help. It is really appreciated.

Solve : coming from linux to windows 8?

Answer»

Hey guys basically I BUILT a COMPUTER not long ago and have been running ubuntu but now it SEEMS right to get windows 8 as I have Steam and want to play GAMES. Now I'm just wondering what the deal is with upgrading from linux to windows 8 because £50 seems far to cheap for a full ''upgrade'' to windows, any advice please ? There is no upgrade path from any Linux distro to Windows...
You'll probably need the full version.
As to gaming i would wait awhile after 8 is released to see how it performs for games...Windows 8 upgrade edition which you can pre-order for £49.99 in the UK requires a legally obtained qualifying Microsoft product to be already installed: Windows XP SP3, Vista or Windows 7. Microsoft upgrade licenses are usually cheaper than full retail. Ubuntu is not a qualifying product.

Solve : Acer Aspire 6920G laptop startup problem?

Answer»

I was prompted to update my adobe reader as it was out of date so I began DOWNLOADING the new version. When the download reached 96% it then began to freeze and would not continue for over 5 minutes. At this point I then lost the toolbar on the bottom of the screen and the laptop began to freeze. I turned the laptop off by holding down the power button as I was unable to do anything.
Now when I try to turn the laptop back on I get the message 'Wondows ERROR Recovery' and the option to 'start windows normally' or 'launch startup repair'. I selected 'launch startup repair' and the laptop then begins to attempt to start but then goes back to the 'Windows Error Recovery' page. This also happens when I SELECT to 'start windows normally'. I have also tried starting the laptop up in safe mode but again the same thing happens. It will not load up windows and keeps restarting.
Could you please tell me how to fix this. I have some important documents on the laptop which I don't want to lose. If I restore the laptop to factory settings I will lose this data so is there a way I can at least take the information off before restoring the laptop?
Thanks for any help. What version of Windows ? ?

Will I still be able to get the data off of the laptop with a USB enclosure even though i can't actually get the laptop to start up and access my profile on there?Yes...the drive doesn't NEED to be bootable into Windows to copy/save your data...ok thanks, does it sound like it is a windows problem? obviously if it is a hard drive problem I wont be able to use the USB enclosure to retrieve the data but do you think that it is not a hard drive problem and therefore I should be able to get the data off?

Solve : Gray screen on start up?

Answer»

I'm getting a gray screen whenever I start up my computer. It only stays on for a couple of minutes before the taskbar shows up along with the files on the screen. The gray screen started showing up after I DOWNLOADED WindowBlinds and changed my theme. I also changed my DESKTOP background and changed it to a slideshow. I really doubt this is a virus since it disappears after a while but it's a nuisance. I RAN a scanner with (updated) McAfee and Ccleaner. McAfee didn't pick up anything and Ccleaner didn't fix it.
So, is the gray screen like a loading screen for my desktop? If so, how can I fix it?

I don't see any problem here or any from your Speccy report other than having no antivirus INSTALLED. We have the same laptop specs. and in my observation of my booting up time which is 40 to 50 SECS. or up to a minute in which windows has fully load (icons on desktop and system tray, internet connection established), loading any browser is almost instant as in 2 to 3 seconds. Even if your laptop boots to a fast 20 seconds and then you clicked the browser icon, Windows would still prioritize other startup programs or Windows processes before it goes to your request(I hope the long time experts here would chime on this issue ). Check first how long Windows boots up fully, then try to CLICK on your browser to check on the difference. Have you tried also other browsers? It could also be some addons/plugins that could delay your browser loading time. Sleep and Hibernate have different advantages, functions that could also be beneficial to laptop users.sysinternals process exsplorer will shed TONS of light on process trees memory ussage, threads, etc. This problem souds like it could be anything so a good tool to get insight would be great.

Do you still intend on dual booting Linux and W7?
Or are you going to just use W7 only or ?

I am very surprised that when you used easybcd and then looked in edit boot menu in easybcd and pick say W7 it should boot right into W7 or Linux what ever one you pick.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike The boot entries in question are in boot.ini, in the root of the drive that windows 7 is installed in (sda1 in your case.) boot.ini was used by the older boot manager used to boot versions of windows up to XP, but it has been replaced in windows 7 by a different BOOTLOADER. It is, however, compatible with booting XP and older versions, and will PARSE boot.ini and display those entries.

Because the only entries in boot.ini are the ones you want to remove, it should be safe to remove boot.ini (or rename it to boot.ini.old first to test.) If you do this, make sure you also completely remove the OS's that the boot.ini entries reference. The usual warnings about backing up and being careful with what you're doing apply to all of this. Was going to state that in MSConfig on windows 7 you can play with bootloader info under boot tab. TechnoGeek : thanks , i did what you said and edit the "boot.ini" and it worked

Solve : Icons, files, pop up windows through task bar all have no options/names?

I tried to update my Nvidia drivers and all it did was make resolution worse so stupidly i tried to do a samsung basic restore on windows 7 and it made it so my ICONS on my desktop have no names, my start menu disappeared, the clock is gone basically any and all text and preview windows are gone please help!As far as the NVIDIA drivers, sometimes when I update them I am turned to the lowest resolution. Did you try changing the resolution before doing the restore?

I found this link Is this what you mean by Samsung Basic Restore? I want you to be sure if you did a Basic Restore or a Complete restore.

Did the restore complete successfully, or were there errors? I notice in the instructions the restore restarts the computer half-way through before finishing. Did this occur?

Please be as specific as possible, thank you! ^w^I ended going into safe mode with COMMAND prompt AMD dong sfc/scannow because the restore corrupted my font files. After that everything went nack to normal after i changed the resolution up again and yeah it restarted HALFWAY through the restore thanc for replyong though Thanks for TELLING us how you fixed it, and glad everythng is working again.

Solve : Windows Framerate issue.(games/photoshop) Started suddenly.?

Answer»

So about a week or two ago my system ( Windows HP firebird 802 running windows 7 64 bit) was running fine. All of my games ran smoothly frame rate was normal and no troubles whatsoever. But one day seemingly overnight my computer suddenly became agonizingly slow. Normal funcitons worked such as internet and video buffering. Although every single game that I use would run at an extremely low frame rate. To the point that it is basically unplayable. This effected games even as low res as minecraft. To fix this sudden slowness issue I ran a full scan of Norton 360 to check my system and nothing was found. I did a similar full system scan in malwarebytes and found a couple of issues but none of which were alarming and all from recycle bin. After the removal of these two issues adn restart, the system was running just as slowly as before. So i finally decided it would be worth it to try a system restore to see if I could restore some of performance. The list of things in my system restore points consited of about 5 items all of which were updates except for the fartherst one away which was NOV 6. THe rest were on the same day and labeled as a windows update. I am unsure as to exactly what date these were. I chose to restor my system to the november 6 date. Upon doing this my system seemed to be cured. All things were suddenly running fine again. And had no problems whatsoever. But then after about a day, my system shut off and said it was configuring updates... These updates were all configured on NOV 21st and I assume were the ones configured before that caused the issue. RIGHT AFTER they fnished my system was back to square one. Slow and laggy all over again. SO i was fairly certain these updates had EVERYTHING to do with this slowness. But when I checked system restore to put it back to where it was before the NOV 6 slot was gone and only about 2 or three remained all from NOV 21st the same day, and all labeled as updates. So last night I came on this chat and talked to someone called Bannana something. And he told me i could uninstall the updates until i found the issue. Ive been uninstalling the updates and I removed Microsoft NET framework 4. And havent been able to solve the issue. I took out almost all of the updates installed on the 21st and to no success. And at one point when I removed some of the security and driver updates in the WINDOWS (203) updates catagory. WHen i restarted my system more updates for I dont know what installed. I really have no clue where to turn or what to uninstall. All i know is that i found a solution with system restore and thsi is now not an option. Please help HEY! Sounds frustrating. I would suggest slugging through all the updates. Updates can be corrupt but there normally hot fixed pretty quick and your issue could be addressed through these updates. I would also set my video card settings to default than run dxdiag.exe. WITCH you can do from the run menu or what ever it is on your OS. This is a direct X trouble shooter and will hopefully identify any issue with active x or software issue relating to video. Finally i would download sysinternals proccess explorer from sysinternals.com this is a tool which will give you way more imfo than task manager. Any oddities or rouge programs/crashes/ even malware can show up on your process explorer and can give you clues as to what to do next. Hope this helps.QUOTE from: Danparkour on November 24, 2012, 01:32:45 PM

But one day seemingly overnight my computer suddenly became agonizingly slow.
99.9% of the time, this indicates a malware infection.

This effected games even as low res as minecraft.
Minecraft is not low resolution. It's textures are low resolution, but texture mapping is hardly the most intensive task performed by a Graphics pipeline. Add to this the rather messy coding style of the game (for which there are good REASONS to be fair), and the dynamic nature of the game and it can often have issues on machines that have no problem with Skyrim (as an example). Anyway, my point is that not being able to run Minecraft isn't really meaningful over not being able to run most other games

While the opinion on this forum about Norton differs, I don't think there is going to be much argument when I say that Norton 360 is not particularly encouraging. I would suggest also trying additional Malware prevention software such as Microsoft Security Essentials. Often other software suites will find things that others miss.

Malwarebytes is not flawless Either. It's also possibly a software issue, will get to that in a sec.

Reading the rest of your post though, I don't think this is a malware problem any more than you do. One of the Windows Updates that is most commonly the cause of problems is their automatic updating of Driver software. I've lost count of the number of times Windows Update has broken my Audio Card, DISPLAY Adapter, or even Motherboard Chipset Drivers in some way.

There is a good side to this: If you can get into Device Manager, you can roll back drivers to previous versions. I'd start with the Graphics Driver, myself.

Solve : Computer Won't Boot Past Boot Screen?

Answer»

Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 8 out of boredom. It was all fine, I just wanted to redo it with a fresh installation. So tonight I burned the ISo to a DVD as normal and formatted my hard drive. I the. Installed Windows 8 onto the computer.

After setup goes through it's thing, it gives a 10 second countdown and then restarts. When it comes on, it doesn't load past the windows loading screen. I turned it off after 30 minutes and then turned it on again. After exactly an hour of letting it sit, it restarted automatically and still won't boot past that screen.

I then redid the windows 8 setup. Same thing, won't go past the boot screen.

Is it possible the ISo image was bad? Or my hard drive is failing or failed?

It's my only computer here at school and I need it working for homework tomorrow.

Thank you to anyone who can help, I'm writing this on my
Phone at 3:30 am.It's also an HP Pavilion p6210y, with an Amd radeon 6770 graphics card and a corsair power supply. Was the ISO from a reliable source? (Where did you get it?)
The ISo was from Microsoft them selves. After I purchased the upgrade, they GAVE you an option to download an ISo image before hitting install. I downloaded it, then installed windows 8 keeping my setting and files.

Also I just RAN the diagnostics on my bios boot part and it all passed.

So I loaded the disc again and hit repair my computer. I'm "resetting my pc" right now. We'll see how this works.Have you read this?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03457468&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4006020Aw man I didn't ever find that. I purchased my computer in December of 2010.

So basically my hardware can't run Windows 8 if its a clean install, but it can if it's an upgrade going from 7 to 8 without wiping everything?

That makes absolutely no sense to me.

Any recommendations? I can reinstall Windows 7 again, no problem, but I paid for Windows 8.It seems that with all the limitations of reduced or non functioning of apps associated with the transition from 7 to 8 (via either method of 8 install) you WOULD be better served functionality wise by reverting to 7 on that particular computer. Hopefully you backed up all your ORIGINAL data that you wanted to keep before you tried the upgrade. I know the loss of your money that will occur if you follow this route is not welcome however hopefully you were able to get the 8 upgrade at the relatively low price it is currently being offered at.truenorth
P.S. While i recognize that it doesn't help you now perhaps others reading the linked site that ST gives will alert others to what can be the consequences of such an upgrade and they will research well before doing this conversion.I'll always be able to upgrade to Windows 8 in the future, since I have the product key I purchased. I guess I'll keep an eye out for when they fix the issue with older HP computers.

Solve : help and advice with external monitor?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an acer aspire 5742 LAPTOP.

Win 7 64 BIT, 8gb ram
Intel HD graphics i3
Driver version 8.15.10.2622
Native resolution on the laptop screen runs at 1366x768
VGA and HDMI outs
I want to connect an external monitor to use for photo editing applications. There are external monitors with resolutions of 1920x1080, 1920x1200, and 2560x1640.
My questions

Will I be able to use the higher resolution monitors or will I have a default resolution of 1366x768?

Does ANYONE have specific monitor recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

DJ
Check the Vid chip specs on the laptop ...it should TELL you what ranges are supported.Thanks.....but how? When I go to the intel graphics and media control panel, it only gives me info for the primary display- showing a range from 800X600 to 1366x768 with the current resolution shown as 1366x768, video bios 1994.0. There is a custom resolution button, which opens a warning box. It just seems that I have to physically attach a second display to get any info.Laptop manuf. site...or your Manual.Usually when an external monitor is connected you can change the resolution to match the monitor.
Intel i3 mobile Graphics HD 3000 will support all with the amount of RAM you have, but only 1920x1080 has the same aspect ratio as 1366x768 (16:9). For monitors, you would like to use their native resolutions for the best picture.Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 29, 2012, 04:22:12 PM

Thanks, I was looking at some 1920x1080 ( 16:9) monitors. There was aslo a monitor at 2560x1440 that was also supposed to be 16:9. Could I run that one with my i3 370m ??

16/9 = 1.77
1920/1080 = 1.77
2560/1440 = 1.77

AFAIK, the i3 w/HD3000 is not resolution limited if you have enough RAM. It may be more a limitation of the HDMI port.

Solve : Computer shutting off randomly?

Answer»

I'm running Windows 7 on my LAPTOP, and for some reason it keeps shutting down at random. I went to the Windows event viewer to see if I could find anything, and this is what I've COME up with:

Quote

The system was shut down due to a critical thermal event.
Shutdown Time = ‎2012‎-‎10‎-‎26T13:07:17.874446600Z
ACPI Thermal Zone = ACPI\ThermalZone\TZS1
_CRT = 383K

I'm guessing this is due to a piece of hardware overheating, but I'm not sure what part. Wondering if anybody can decipher this for me or let me know if there is software out there that will regulate this. The computer will shut off without seemingly getting hot, whether I'm on it or not. Let me know if more information is needed for this. What the computer is telling you is that to protect it's continued existence as a usable device it is protecting itself due to an excessive heat situation by shutting down. It is absolutely essential that you find out the cause and correct it. Some things that can cause overheating are a dirty interior of the computer/stopped or malfunctioning fans/in the case of LAPTOPS using the computer on inappropriate surfaces (soft as opposed to hard surfaces)/without knowing your brand and model of laptop it may also be a product that is known to have heat issues. If the computer is still under warranty i would suggest looking into that aspect.truenorth
P.S. there are free programs available that can tell you the actual operating temps if you so desire.I've had this for a couple of years ( the computer, not the issue ) and I'm using it on a wood desk, so hard surface. It had an issue with the graphics card previously, and was down for quite a while, I had a friend install a new board/new ram/disc drive for me recently, and it's only been since then that this problem has happened. Is there any way to pinpoint what part is overheating by chance?By the nature of their construction laptops are very difficult for the AVERAGE user to work on. You can make certain attempts yourself such as by using compressed air try to REMOVE any accumulated dust from the interior. Have you noticed any change in the sounds or frequency of the operation of the fans? You can also use a laptop cooler pad to try and diminish the heat. The latter solution is given with the caution that it not be used as an alternative to dealing with dirt or malfunctioning fans. Certain laptops which are known to produce excessive heat can benefit from the use of a cooling pad. Presuming that these heat issues arose as a result of the installation of these changed components then something may not have been installed correctly (may be blocking fan circulation for instance) or were inappropriate components for that computer.truenorth
