Solve : Where can I download a legal version of Windows 7??

Answer»

I want to upgrade a friend's computer from Windows Vista to 7. Where online can I find a legal version I can download and burn into an install CD?Microsoft...Since the release of Windows 8, the Microsoft store no longer offers a Windows 7 download. They now only offer Windows 8.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbpage.Windows_8_Pro

At $39.99, it's not a bad deal for a download upgrade to Windows 8.

There are places out there that still offer it as a download. I believe CNET still offers the full Windows 7 full retail as a download, not an upgrade though.

-=EDIT=-
I found where they've hidden them away. APPARENTLY you can still ORDER the Windows 7 discs from Microsoft, but it is not offered for DIGITAL download. The discs are full version only, not upgrades.

Solve : Windows 7 Media Player has disappeared?

Answer»

Hi, I have a msi cx620 laptop with Windows 7 Home PREMIUM. Recently, for some unknown reasons (perhaps after an update of Windows), the Windows Media Player disappeared both from the Taskbar and All Programs. So, I can't play any video or music clips anymore. I would appreciate any help as how to get the Media Player BACK or reinstall it.
Thanks : Pishi Open the start menu and type 'features'. Click turn windows features on and off. There should be a category 'Media Features' in the list that appears. Expand that, and check Media Center and click OK. If it was already checked, uncheck it and click OK, then go back, check it again and click OK.

If it still doesn't show up after this, does opening Start -> Run -> "%programfiles%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" start windows media player? If that starts it, you're just missing the shortcuts.Thank you very much TechnoGeek for your advice. I tried both solutions. Neither worked. After applying the first solution, WMP showed up in the "All Programs" and its folder in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player which was empty before is now populated with a number of folders and files. However, when I click WMP in the All Programs NOTHING HAPPENS. Double clicking an audio or video file also yields no result.

What else besides DownloadHelper can I use?Ok, I tried downloadhelper. If my video is 1HR. in LENGTH or 3hrs. in length, it seems like downloadhelper wont download it. yes you can download the videos from youtube with the help of http://www,savevid.com/
Quote from: soybean on June 19, 2012, 07:03:43 AM
I don't know what you mean by "yanks". Saving a LINK in Delicious for a youtube video is the same as saving a link to any web page. Saving a link in Delicious is like saving link in your browser (Favorites/Bookmarks); using Delicious just makes your links available to you from any computer. In other words, you're saving a link to the website, not saving the WHOLE web page or video.

Can you save any links to delicious anymore? It seems like I cant save anything anymore. They did change there website a bit. If I cant save anything via delicious, is there any other sites out there I can use?

Solve : Unable to boot from DVD drive in Windows 8?

Answer»

Just got my first Windows 8 desktop. I'm aware of the new software BASED methodology for getting around the Secure Boot operation and booting from a DVD, but if I select the Atapi DVD-Rom drive to boot from, nothing happens - it just boots from the hard drive as normally done. If I select another entry "DVD-CD Drive", the screen goes blank for a second, then shows a short horizontal cursor, and the PC locks up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Have you tried setting it as the primary boot device in the BIOS yet ? ?
Are you getting a "press any key" prompt ? ?Patio:

Nice to see you're still there. I tried changing the BIOS boot order first - but because of Secure Boot being in place, that has absolutely no effect. I get no Press Any Key message at any point, in anything I've tried. I'm reluctant to disable Secure Boot, since that's what the new METHOD for changing boot order is supposed to MAKE unnecessary.

Thanks for replying.
Right after you select the DVD try pressing enter as it's loading...Patio:

I've got the hard drive out now (at least I can back it up the hard way), but when I finish with that, I'll try your latest SUGGESTION and post the results.

Thanks.Just a side note...safemode for Win8 has changed to Shift +F8...in case you may need it...Is that "Shift +F" and then "*"; or is there no asterisk at the end?Quote from: veritasffg on November 30, 2012, 08:36:19 AM

I'm reluctant to disable Secure Boot, since that's what the new method for changing boot order is supposed to make unnecessary.

If Secure Boot is on (and if I properly understand the technology), the BIOS/UEFI will refuse to boot at all from a device without the specified keys loaded, regardless of what you 'choose' to boot from. Turn Secure Boot off and try again.

Solve : Blocking Web Site in Hosts File - Windows 7?

Answer»

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium

When blocking nuisance web sites, using the 'hosts' file (C:WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.), what difference does it make when the entries are made in the different formats as follows:

Example web SITE - http://www.mywebsite.com

Hosts entries made thus - 127.0.0.1 http:/www.mywebsite.com

127.0.0.1 www.mywebsite.com

127.0.0.1 mywebsite.com

What does it mean when the 'hosts' entries are made, in each of the three different ways (for the same web address), above.

Thank you.Looks like a homework assignment, but will answer anyways.

Quote

Hosts entries made thus - 127.0.0.1 http:/www.mywebsite.com

-> http:/ is an error where it should be http://

http://www.mywebsite.com is most explicit ... can only redirect http:// to 127.0.0.1 https:// would not be blocked by redirection to home.

www.mywebsite.com is less explicit than the prior ( BUT ... system assumes its blocking only http://www )

mywebsite.com is the least explicit redirection in hosts file ( Where.. HTTP:// is assumed as well as WWW , so it would be blocked by redirection as a normal http://www type website, but any other combination would not. )

I have ALWAYS used the most explicit FULL URL Path/Names myself, as well as its easier sometimes set a browser to block all sites except for sites that have been added to the allowed listing, such as what i did for my 8 yr OLD daughters computer.

Thank you for the most explicit reply. I am troubled by some web pages that pop up advertisements, in spite of the 'pop up blockers' being 'on'. They are full pages that take up the full screen. This happens when I open a web page or/and click on a link on that web page. Along with the page I want, the rouge web page also opens, usually under the page I want, so that I see it only later when I close the page I wanted.

I have tried the 'not allowed' or 'block' method in IE9, Google and Firefox browsers but to no avail. Because I do much 'browsing', I cannot allow only a few sites and block the rest. Any advice would be most welcome.

Regards.

Solve : Corrupt Master File Table?

Answer»

My PC is dual booted with [Windows 7 Ultimate/Ubuntu]. While in Ubuntu a text file went missing but the Partition was still there, I booted into Windows & could not find the file although the Partition was there. Then Windows "Blue Screened", after re-boot Chkdsk TRIED to run & gave this message:

"corrupt master file table, chkdsk aborted"

When I click on the Partition drive letter:

"E:\ is not acessible.
The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable".

BlueScreenView identified the cause of the crash as "Ntfs.sys" & "ntoskernel.exe", I booted back into Ubuntu & the Partition was gone. When I got back into Windows BlueScreenView had no data & Windows Minidump folder was empty, how can I recover the Partition? I'd run a bootable hard disk utility against the hard drive to verify that the MFT is not physically damaged/unrecoverable/unrepairable. If your drive is seagate there is SEATOOLS, otherwise other drive manufacturers also have their utilities that you can download and burn to a CD and boot from. You might find that the hard drive itself has FAILED and so rebuilding might not be POSSIBLE on that drive.

What Hard Drive Make/Model do you have?Where is Ubuntu installed to ? ?
Where is 7 installed to ? ?Thanks for replies, there is only one drive on the PC:

Western Digital SATA (WD15EADS-22P)

I can boot into UBUNTU or Windows, there are 3 other partitions which are accessible: UBUNTU,Windows 7,FAT 32. GParted (UBUNTU partition MANAGER) can see the damaged partition & reports it as 500GB but shows no information for used/unused space. I think the data is still there but the Master File Table cannot point to it. Quote from: patio on December 01, 2012, 08:13:52 AM

Solve : Help needed with windows 7 laptop and formating?

Answer»

Hi
I'm trying to help out my sister-in-law with her laptop. She got a packard bell easynote lx86 with an intel i5 cpu , 6gb ram and a 700gb hd that's running windows 7 home prem oa 64 bit ( it's got 'acer group' underneath it ).
She's had a big change in circumstances and what she wants is for me to format/erase it and start again so her daughters can use it. I've got the prod id and the prod key on the bottom of the machine but - there's no recovery partition on the hard DRIVE and theres no disc's for it.

So what I need to know is can I make an installation or recovery disc from the laptop and then whats the best tool to use to format the hard drive ? I've got a copy of secure erase but it uses floppies and the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive.

Thanks , adamIf it's new enough to have an i5 in it order the recovery DVD from the manuf. for a minimal COST +shipping...Hi

This is further to the above so hopefully this will be understandable.

This is to do with the packard bell easynote laptop that has windows 7 64bit on at the moment now this is where it get's abit compicated , there's a sticker stuck underneath for windows7 home prem OA for ACER Group and it's key , but after looking at the profile and running a key finder on the laptop it's come up with a different set-up for windows 7 home prem OEM X15-37379 64bit with a different key.

What I need to know is - I've got a downloaded copy of windows 7 home prem 64bit on disc but will either of the keys I've got work with it , or where can I find an OEM copy to use with the key/s ?.

I'm trying to help my sister-in-law out , she's now living in this country after loosing her husband in belgium and she's asked me to wipe her laptop and reinstall windows 7 so her KIDS can use it as they grow up so doesn't want to spend alot.

Thanks , Adam Quote from: patio on December 15, 2012, 05:54:02 PM

One would expect that the product key will work on a Windows n7 DVD from a different source. NOT TRUE.
It may work that way once or twice, but not always. The Home Premium version of Windows 7 is good enough for basic use. Some places now have it on sale.

Personally, I would recommend buying a new copy of Windows 7 only if the maker of the laptop does not have a replacement available.Quote
OEM X15-37379 64bit with a different key.
Windows PID - Product Identification. Dowload SIW old Home Edition here then install and run. Go to Licenses and check your Windows Product Key from there. Another alternative is Speccy.
He ran a keyfinder already and they don't match...

Somehow i don't think we're getting the full story...YES, the sticker product key is what is needed. Adam posted : OEM X15-37379 64bit with a different key. Which is not a Product key but a PID for OEM for preinstalled windows.

Taken from a HP laptop using SIW. I have posted a thread (here) regarding this HP laptop's sticker key not matching the key finder license of SIW and speccy (same result). I guess I will never find out which is which unless I've decided to reinstall or somehow used the created recovery discs on another hard drive using this laptop.
Hi

Obviously I didn't make it clear

Sister-in-law couldn't say where the laptop came from or if it was new at the time - husband sorted it out and he's nolonger with us so can't ask .

The sticker on the bottom of the laptop say's -

Windows 7 home prem OA
Acer Group CO.7P201.001
PRODUCT KEY , PMQPH-33HV3-WHRVY-MRDWX-_____
X16-96072

including a couple of barcodes that's how it looks

Here's the result of the key finder , this is on the laptop at the moment - don't know why or when it was changed.

Windows 7 Home Premium
Product Part No.: X15-37379
Installed from 'OEM' media.
Product ID: 00359-OEM-8992687-00006 match to CD Key data

Computer Name: GEBRUIKER-PC

So , like I said she only want's it the kids , which would be the best way to go. I've got a downloaded copy of windows 7 home premium on a disc , or do I need some other TYPE of home prem ?

Thanks , Adam

Product key info edited to prevent abuse.
Hi

Just to let you know , have now got this sorted. Used killdsic to format and my downloaded windows 7 disc with the key that it was running with before.

Now up and running - for now

Solve : My DELL Inspiron laptop screen goes black but my computer is still on, help!?

Answer»

I have a DELL Inspiron laptop (not sure of the model) but recently (in the last 2 1/2 months) the screen keeps GOING black it happens nearly everyday now, the laptop's still on as i can hear the background noise and the light is still on. I have turned sleep mode off so it can't be that, and i have to PRESS the on button repeatedly for about 1-2 mins until the screen comes back on, and i then have to log back in.
I'm really worried it's the screen, but ive only had this laptop for 1 1/2 years, surely it can't be the screen in that short amount of TIME? i hope you can help, and please answer me in lamen terms i am not computer savvy at all!
I'm on Windows 7 if that will help anyone, is there anything that i can do so my laptop will tell me the exact problem? i've tried trouble shooting but it doesnt come up with anything please help.To start with you can attach your computer to an external monitor (or a compatible tv) and see if the same occurrence arises. If it doesn't then it is likely your laptop screen. If it does it is likely not the screen but something else. There are a few things other than the physical screen that can CAUSE this to happen. User set power settings and video CARD problems just to mention a couple. Now getting back to the screen it doesn't automatically mean your screen is failing it could be that a connection between the screen and the computer is intermittent (loose connection).Try an external monitor 1st.truenorthDoes the same thing happen in safe mode?

Solve : How to use filename without extension in registry editor??

Answer»

Hi!

I have simple problem...

As everybody knows in cmdline we can use parameter %~n1% to get filename from %1%

I tried it with registry editor, never succesfull...

My key has value:
CMD /K java -jar "I:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\kickass.jar" "%1%" -o "%~n1%.bin"

result of file e.g. file.asm is always %~n1%.bin

when I use:

cmd /k java -jar "I:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\kickass.jar" "%1%" -o "%1%.bin"

result of input file.asm is file.asm.bin

How to use %1% parameter without extension in regedit?

'Cause in cmdline it works - but I don't want to create batch...

Many thanks for EVERY help, reply or comments.

MiroThe values in the registry are read by different programs. In this case, the shell reads the values.

The shell, unsurprisingly, does not use any NT Command extensions. it's list of possible substitutions are (taken from here

Quote

// %* - replace with all parameters
// %~ - replace with all parmaters starting with and following the second parameter
// %0 or %1 the first file parameter. For example “C:\Users\Eric\Destop\New Text Document.txt”. Generally this should be in quotes and the applications command line parsing should accept quotes to disambiguate files with spaces in the name and different command line parameters (this is a security best practice and I believe mentioned in MSDN).
// %<n> (where N is 2 - 9), replace with the nth parameter
// %s – show command
// %h – hotkey value
// %i – IDList stored in a shared memory handle is passed here.
// %l – long file name form of the first parameter. Note win32 applications will be passed the long file name, win16 applications get the short file name. Specifying %L is preferred as it avoids the need to probe for the application type.
// %d – desktop absolute parsing name of the first parameter (for items that don’t have file system paths)
// %v – for verbs that are NONE implies all, if there is no parameter passed this is the working directory
// %w – the working directory
Hi!

Many many thanks for this link! I have seen references to many possibilities how to edit registry BETTER than I know...

But main thing was not found....

Quoted parameters tested (maybe incorrectly), but no one give filename only... always is there extension...

So, if I can please again: How to modify %1% parameter to filename only in regedit?

Many thanks for all.

So, if I can please again: How to modify %1% parameter to filename only in regedit?

You can't.OK, simple direct answer.

No more. However, you could make the regedit command point at a batch file, instead. Then the batch file could invoke the assembler. My last entry in this forum:

Solve : BSOD from Realtek HD audio sound card?

Answer»

Hi there. I'm getting a BSOD from my realtek HD integrated sound card. I have an ASUS laptop, K7 series.

I've attached dxdiag and bluescreenview.exe text output from the latest BSOD.

CURRENTLY I'm EXPERIENCING distorted sound, and BSOD's as well. Disabling the card in the device manager is the only solution at the MOMENT. I tried updating to latest drivers, that doesn't seem to work. I think I'm having some sort of hardware conflict, but I haven't changed any hardware on the laptop almost since I bought it (put an SSD in the 2nd bay right after, nothing since)

Solve : Windows Media Player - general question?

In Media Player, is there a way to determine which Playlist(s), if any, a particular TRACK from my library appears? Welcome to the FORUM. I SUGGEST the easiest way would be to use a VBScript. Found this in the snippet closet.

Code: [Select]Set objPlayer = CreateObject("WMPlayer.OCX" )
Set objPlaylists = objPlayer.PlaylistCollection
Set colPlaylists = objPlaylists.getAll()

For i = 0 to colPlaylists.Count - 1
Set objPlaylist = colPlaylists.Item(i)
For j = 0 to objPlaylist.Count - 1
Set objSong = objPlaylist.Item(j)
WScript.Echo objPlaylist.name & " " & objSong.Name

Solve : Folder permissions?

Answer»

I have a laptop that fried. I was able to take the hard drive out but the folder that I am trying to access is saying I dont have permission to VIEW the files. I have tried to change the permissions but the folder just shows empty. I know there is approz 15000 files in the folder.

How can i get access to the files?Easiest method is to use a Live Linux Distro which will ignore Windows NTFS security permissions such as Ubuntu or another distro of choice with a friendly GUI for anyone not very familiar with Linux and can NAVIGATE and figure it out quickly. Boot off that CD and copy the contents from this drive to your local drive. Then boot your system normal and where these files RESIDE you should now have access to them.

*Do not copy the folder and all contents as for I BELIEVE the NTFS File Permissions will be inherrited and move to your local system, I am pretty sure if you go in 1 more level past the initial folder that you cant get past under windows while in Linux and copy the files and folders 1 level in to your local hard drive at say C:\recovered_data\ that file permissions will not be inherrited in the copy to C:\recovered_data\

Other method that has worked for me if when copying protected data from NTFS to a FAT32 partition such as on a thumb drive via a Linux Distro to get past Windows NTFS File/Folder Permissions. FAT32 does not have these permissions and so permissions can not be inherrited in the move. So if you had say a 16GB thumb drive that is inserted into the computer booting Linux with this laptops hard drive as an external, and then use Linux to make a copy from the external HDD to this thumb drive formatted under FAT32, you can trim off the file/folder security as a fact.or u can just take ownership using the registry files that i found one on the internet and and the buddy that can help u DELETE the folder is unlocker software which is really good but slow i dont remember where do i download them so just google it first kill all processes from the folder using unlocker then take ownership lastly direct delete shift+DEL or use unlocker again to delete them and tell me if its work

Solve : Black screen on start up?

Answer»

My daughter jus called me, I gave her my old Toshiba lap top with Vista, always was a good machine, now for no reason got a black screen with a curser, can any one help Have you tried removing the hard drive and reinserting it back? Inspect for any dent/missing pins while doing the suggestion. The drive could have been slightly dislodge or worst case, failed. Sorry, but without more information it's impossible to assist. We would need to know:

1) More about the specific hardware

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) EXACTLY what happens when you try to BOOT the system

4) Can you boot to safe mode?

5) What happens when you try to access advanced boot options (F8) at boot?

and anything else you THINK of that might be relevant.I would power on the computer wait for the screen with the cursor, hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds until the computer powers off. Then disconnect the power and pull out the battery out... then try again. About 50% of the time over the last 11 years when my customers have run into similar problems (including today) it has had to do with SHUTTING the computer down wrong or getting stuck coming out hibernation/sleep. All that said you could have one of a plethora of unrelated problems.

Thanks

MikeI have tried the shutdown method by holding down the start button for 10 seconds, then remove the battery & start up again, left it saying with the blue screen background - Please wait, left this like this for 4 hours, I then managed to select safe mode, just keeps on going round in circles, screen just says one of the files needs to be checked for consistency, then lots of rows saying deleting index entry, then says removing orphaned file, then back to that blue screen saying please wait, then it restarts itself & keeps on going AROUND the above in circlesBoot to safemode...
Open a command prompt from Start/Programs/Accessories...
Type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...

NOTE: If you get a prompt stating "volume is in use do you want to run at start? "...select Yes and re-boot.

Do NOT interrupt it once it starts.

Solve : Two WD externals acting up?

Answer»

Okay everyone, I am back again with a new fun issue.

I had an old computer running Windows 7. I build a new computer and REALIZED I had left some files I needed on the old drive. So I placed it in an external enclosure. I will call this Disc 3 (this is the designation given in disc management). For the first few days, this external and my back-up (Disk 4 where I back-up my files from Disc 3) worked absolutely fine.

Then, about two days ago (roughly two weeks after making the new computer) when I started my computer, I got the Windows message “the discs need to be formatted” for both drives. Now they both have very weird, separate errors.

My current computer specs are:
Windows 7 64-bit
Video card GeForce GTX 660
Processor AMD A10 5800K processor
Ram 8GB
Motherboard ASUS F2 A85-M PRO
Power supply Raidmax RX-730SS

I plug in Disc 3, or restart with Disc 3 already attached, and it does not give me an error message, but the drive is not assigned a drive letter, and does not appear in My Computer. I can see the drive in Disc Management, at the bottom (image) list. The drive does not appear in the top (text) list.

The drive is listed as Disc 3 Unrecognized 930GB Not Initialized in the first slot and 930GB Unallocated in the second slot. When I right click the right spot, all the options such as "new Volume, Assign drive letter and paths" are grayed out. When I right click on the left spot, I can choose "Initialize disc, Offline, Properties, and Help."

If I select Initialize, it gives me two options, but both end the same way: "Disc Initialization Failed."

I am also having a problem with my other external drive, Disk 4. (placed here because I am having trouble believing both drives crapped out on me at once) where it is extremely slow loading. I can play and open files from the drive, but when I try to copy them it hangs, explorer.exe crashes, or it gives me a “Error: 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired.” It consistently appears in My Computer, but sometimes it may take 5-10 minutes to appear. It also tells me often "windows must format the drive to use it" when I plug it in. I know this probably means this drive is failing.

After doing some googling, I found out this semaphore timeout error is a network error, but I am not copying these files over a network, in fact I even unplugged my internet on this computer to see if that would help but I continue to get the semaphore error. Both hard drives are attached using WD enclosures, both are WD hard drives. I have 4 enclosures, and have tried them all, same result. I have several cords, have tried them all, same result. I have an old internal hard drive, that I placed into the enclosures, and it works fine.

Placed Disc 3 into the computer (took it out of the enclosure and connected it directly to the motherboard). Now it appears in My Computer as Drive h:/ under Local Drives with a large blue ? on it. When I try to get into the drive, it says “Cannot access the drive. Make sure the drive is connected and the file path is correct and try again.” But...it is a hard disc drive. Why does it appear under Local Drives? This drive was never set up to be shared over a network (actually I am not even sure how to do that).

Placed Disc 4 into the computer, and it says “You must format the disc before using it. Would you like to format it now?” but I select No because I need data from at least one these drives.

Disc 3 has some important files (both college work and job-work) that were backed up onto disc 4. Recovering either drive is okay (I do not need to recover both). But it seems so crazy that they both crash on me, with such different errors, on the same day.

Both disc 3 and 4 give the "disc must be formatted" error on my other computer, regardless of internal or external connection.

Occasionally, I can gain access to both drives, and see the files, and copy a few, but Disc 4 will give me the "semaphore error" after about 10-20 minutes and Disc 3 will do the "disconnection sound" and tell me the drive is no longer accessible.

Next I will be trying the “freeze the drive” option some people have suggested from googling, but I decided to see if anyone here had any more suggestions.

tl;dr version
2 drives work fine
2 drives both say "need formatted" on start-up, same day
Externally, one drive does not appear in My Computer, other has Semaphore error and slow loading
Internally, one drive can not be accessed and one drive "needs formatted".
Sometimes drives work, but never for long

Thank you for any help.
This is indeed a conundrum as what could appear to be some possible problems are undermined by others. Such as having had some experience with external enclosures one might be tempted to see that as a probable cause. However given that the drives in question have been connected directly and still exhibit issues makes that unlikely. Given that these 2 drives don't function properly in another computer point logically to a problem with the drives. However that 2 would exhibit faults on the same day while possible stretches ones imagination as you observe. The thing that jumped out at me is that you said "I had an old computer running Windows 7". Which is where these 2 drives came from. Presuming that they worked fine on it what operating system was on that computer before windows 7 was installed on it? If it was an old computer it would NOT have had win 7 on it initially. Could the problem be related to the possibility that most of the content held on those drives was created with the initial operating system? I know this is a stretch but for the moment lacking some other notion that is the only thing that seems to be common to both drive problems.truenorthYes, the older computer had Windows 7 on it initially. The older computer was a custom build as well, built from about a year ago. This new one I just built a month ago. I tend to UPGRADE a lot. Both OS are 64 bit.

The disc 3 was the internal drive, that has Windows 7 installed to it. Disk 4 was an external I was using as a backup. I had an acronis disc image saved to disk 4, well as files and folders. The disc image is of disk 3 and the files and filders are from disc 3.

What really stumps me is that both drives worked perfectly fine. Then they both failed same day, with different errors. You are right, it streaches the imagination.

So to clarify, disk 3 used to be an internal drive, and has Windows 7 installed to it, but I moved it to an external enclosure. Disk 4 was always an external drive.

When I tested them on the other computer, it was the old computer I pulled them from. The computer will not book to the disk 3 anymore even when installed internally it says bootmgr not found, so I formatted another drive and instaled 7 to that. Both drives came up as " need to be formatted" but when I switched them back to my new computer, I was able to veiw some files on disc 3 and copy them, for about ten minutes, then the drive disconnected.

Hope this makes sense, and thanks for the suggestion. I will try the freezer thing when I get homefrom work tonight.OK so really the aspect of the original computer being older is NOT relevant to my observation as i was THINKING older as being pre win 7 which is not the case here. The other item i note now is that you have a drive (#3) that obviously was the drive that contained the operating system etc from it's original home (the older computer). It now finds itself in unfamiliar territory (a new home -the new computer). I would ask that other CH members contribute as to whether than could create the type of issue you are having with that drive. All the hardware/software/drivers/etc. are those that were needed and used by the old computer and most likely vary in many instances to those used on the new computer. So ultimately you may need to do an attempt at data recovery for anything you would like to retain from the drive and then reformat it in order to be able to use it on the new computer. truenorthOkay, I tried the freezing trick and got access to Disk 3 for about an hour, so I placed it (properly protected) in a bucket of ice and got all my files transferred. YAY!

For fun and giggles I placed Disc 4 in the freezer, but still could not get access to the files. It kept APPEARING differently in Disc Management (the drive had no partitions, or that is to say, was not divided up into more than 1 drive, but it would frequently appear in Disc Management as having 2 or more partitions, as being RAW or Unknown format, and misrepresenting the size of the drive.)

I am not going to mark as solved yet, in case someone has some idea as to how two drives up and died on me on the same day (this is my running assumption right now, but wow I must be unlucky).

Now I am out to buy a new back-up drive! Yay!So I am back because I plugged in a new external drive, used it for 2 days and now today when I started my computer I got the same "Windows must format the disk to use it" message. Now I have 3 dead hard drives. I am returning the third, I just bought it, but now I am sure something is wrong.

It is giving me the same error as the Disc 3, showing up as Not Initialized in the Disc Management but never appearing in My Computer. Attaching it internally still has the same result - not appearing in My Computer, Not Initialized in Disc Management.

I bought an entirely new WD external hard drive, and was using the new cords provided with the external.

For now, I put a new hard drive inside the computer and am using it as a back up instead of an external, but what do I do if that internal back up one fails?
What happens if my main drive fails when I have no back-up?
What could be causing this? Or do I SOMEHOW have really bad luck? Could it be my motherboard? I used different USB ports, but...just wondering.

I do put other devices on my computer (my phone, a music player, a tablet) and the last thing I want is those to go down, so for now I am just avoiding plugging them into the computer, just using dropbox to transfer files.

I would really appreciate help here, I am honestly worried, and I only just built this computer so it is all under warranty. Thank you for any ideas.Your operating system (win 7) what was it installed from? truenorthI installed it from the Windows 7 disc, 64 bit. I had a key from before ( I had bought the disc and key together last year) but my disc was scratched so I bought just the disc, which according to the Windows site was okay, as long as the key was only used for one computer.

So old key, new disc. I went just now and did that Genuine Checker on The Windows site and it says " your windows is genuine" so I do not think there are any conflicts there.OK well that rules that out.Sure cannot believe this is a hardware issue. Something in software is either corrupted or out of date or is a compatibility problem. Now the 64 dollar question is what? The only thing i see common to all 3 HD's is the brand. truenorthThat is all I can see similar too, so I will be trying a Seagate in an external enclosure for the next few days.

If that fails, I will try a reinstall. If that fails....not sure.

Hope I can get this figured out.Are you using the same external enclosure for all these drives?Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 23, 2012, 10:24:39 AM

Are you using the same external enclosure for all these drives?

No, I have used 5 old enclousures that I have had, and when I bought the new external I used the new enclousure it came in. I have also tried different usb cords and different power cords. I have tried using diferent USB ports.

I have also tried plugging the drives in internally ( removing the drive from the enclousre and plugging it into the motherboard directly) but once the drive fails, it is gone.

I tried formatting them, but it just says Format Incomplete or gives me errors, tells me the drive is no longer plugged in, tells me the drive is not initilized, and tells me the drive is in an unrecognized format.

Thre drives do not work in other machines once they fail, so it makes me wonder, what could be failing so bad that it breaks the drive. Or if I just have horrible luck suddenly.Quote from: Mayuukosan on October 23, 2012, 12:47:34 PM

1. Some enclosures don't work very well. I assume these are 3.5" SATA drives? AC adapters being used on all enclosures? I've had no problems with 2.5" USB drives in factory enclosures, which require no external power, i.e. powered from USB directly. Windows limits USB2.0 to 500ma.
2,3,4. While the drive is connected to the motherboard, run the drive manufacturer's diagnostic. If the drive is damaged, it will return an error code.

Yes, these are 3.5" SATA drives, all of them. All of them have 12v AC adapter cords.

Following your link, it leads me to WD software download page, but as far as I can see there is no diagnostic tool. The way I followed the links was Your link > Western Digital section (same page) which lead me (when I clicked Download Data Lifeguard) to a WD page, asking me to specify my product. As the first two drives were WD My Book Essentials, I choose that, which lead me http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=125&lang=en < Here, where the download options are Drivers, Firmware, Formatter, SmartWare update, and SmartWare user manual.

I already had SmartWare installed, but it does not detect any drives that are not assigned a drive letter, and there is no "diagnostic" option I can find.

I will google for a bit to find the WD diagnostic tool, but as of yet I have not managed to locate it. Would another drive tool work just as well, as in is there a generic diagnostic? OPr does it have to be a WD drive diagnostic tool?

Edit I found the diagnostic tool and ran it. It detected the three failed drives, all said FAIL under Smart Status. Not sure where the error code is, double clicking the failed drives opens a "Scan Drive" dialog, so they are scanning now. I did the extended scan instead of the quick scan, so I am waiting for them to complete (estimated time 4 hours T.T)All three drives came out of the test the same way: SMART status FAIL, Test Status PASS.

When I right click the failed drives, and choose "Show Disc Information" two have red fail markers on Spin Up Time and Raw Read Error Rate. The third only has red Fail markers next to Spin Up Time.

What else should I be looking for?

Solve : YIKES....Erased my BINARY VALUE??

Answer»

MY windows 7 pc (HP Slimline - About 2 yrs old) was in the middle of a simple update and froze up. I had to pull the plug to shut pc after a full day of it being frozen. Anyway, went to Google to find a fix and SOMEONE recommended F8 upon start-up and then to start up in safe mode with networking. (That is what woked for them) Anyway, I did this and erased my Binary Value! I have COME to discover this means I erased my operating system. (I am not technical)

Anyway, I spoke to my cable provider thinking they could HELP and they could not, of course. Although, the tech rep I got said all I had to do was get a Windows 7 disc and toss it in my pc and it would start to re-install itself. I thought "WOW", that is easy. Then I spoke to someone else and they said it's fairly difficult unless you knw what you are doing. (Backing up files had to be done and other stuff) YIKES!!

So, this is my last attempt before I either call Microsoft back and give them $149 to have them WRITE me a new Binary Value....or try Best Buy's geek squad. (Nt sure what they will charge)
My question.... Is there an easy way to re-install Windows without being very pc savy OR is this a job for the pros??? Please tell us Exactly what happens when you turn on the computer up to and including the point where you have no further changes.Include all messages that appear on your screen (if any). Have you tried repeated clicking on F8 when the computer first boots to try and enter "safe mode"? Depending what removed even this may not be possible. But you need to try it and tell us the results. Do you have any discs related to your operating system such as a recovery disc?Ultimately i urge you NOT to try to deal with Microsoft at the initial stages (unless it is to purchase a recovery disc). If it evolves that you need to use outside help talk to your friends and family to see if they have had any satisfactory help from a locally available computer technician that they can recommend. Any competent computer repair shop should be able to get you going again. I don't know how far you are prepared to go or how relevant it is but you may want to try and RETRIEVE any data on the HDD BEFORE you try a recovery (particularly done by someone else) as you could lose all the personal data on the HDD in the process. There is available software (some free) that can recover from computer failures but it is a little premature to suggest any until we have a more complete picture of what is happening with your computer.truenorth What exactly does erasing a binary value mean and where did you read up on this ? ?Yes, tell us what happened to the PC after you restarted.

I think you edited some entries in registries, because you mentioned about binary values.
If it is the problem, there are some tools to fix registries to their default.

Solve : atapi and driverframeworks error, computer freeze/crash?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

I have tried searching for answers to this question but nothing has worked.
My specs
OS Windows 7 64-bit
Video card GeForce GTX 660
Processor AMD A10 5800K processor
Ram 8GB
Motherboard ASUS F2 A85-M PRO
Power supply Raidmax RX-730SS

The issue:
My computer will freeze. All applications stop working simultaneously, and ctrl-alt-del does nothing. Mouse does not move. Keyboard does nothing. All devices (like my music player and phone) act as though they were unplugged.Waiting for the computer to recover does nothing, I have to do a hard reset by HOLDING the power button or flicking the switch on the power supply.
I cannot SEEM to replicate the freezes but they occur about twice a day.

In the Event Log, I see many of the same error: Event ID 11, atapi, “The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2.”
I also see Event ID 10110 (sometimes 10111), DriverFrameworks-UserMode “A problem has occured with one or more user-mode drivers and the hosting process has been terminated. This may temporarily interrupt your ability to access the device.” The atapi error will occur in huge batches, like 5-10 entries at once. The Frameworks error occurs only once. Both occur right before the crash.

What I have found
I did a google search and found this atapi points to a hard drive or CD-drive error, and not sure if it relates but I was having many hard drive errors before (two complete drive failures and two drives that just did not work) and I had to replace my motherboard. Link for that is here.

I am still able to access and use my drives. I ran a hard drive diagnostic and all hard drives (I have 2 internals and one external) came up good.
I can still read/write CDs fine.

I tried to find which drive as Port2, but in Device manager it says ATA Channel 0-7, but ATA Channel 2, in the drive properties, says Drive 0.

I saw on google to select “Use PIO Only” in driver properties, but I do not have that selection. The only checkbox in Driver Properties is “Enable DMA.” I have tried unchecking this box, but the hangs still occur.

I changed SATA cords for my HDs and CD drive but the error persists.

As for the frameworks error, I seem to see it has to do with sleep/hibernation, both of which I have had disabled for quite some time. I double checked the settings, and Sleep and Hibernation are both still disabled. It may also relate to antivirus errors (as seen here) and what I run is Avira!. I installed and ran MalwareBytes when these errors occurred, in Safe Mode, but I had no viruses/malware.

The sites I have seen are this which tells about the atapi error and here and here which tells about the frameworks error.

tl;dr version
Computer crashes with atapi and driverframeworks error.
Atapi points to a drive, but I cannot isolate which drive or why.
Driverframeworks points to hibernation or sleep modes, both were disabled before this error even started, and both are still disabled now. May also relate to AV, which I use Avast! and ran Malwarebytes when this started, no viruses/malware.
Changed sata cords to fix atapi error, did not work.
Checked to make sure sleep and hibernation are disabled, and they are.

Thank you for any help.

I have not had any bluescreens, so bluescreen view is empty, nothing to publish. It says "0 Crashes".

Thank you for the fast reply.Does anyone have any responses? I am still looking for any assistance with this issue. Still crashing/freezing everyday. Thank you so much.

If I can not figure this out by the weekend, I may try a full reinstall, but I would like to avoid that if at all possible.Does it freezes randomly or any particular event?

A Virtual clone drive or emulation software should also be the cause of your issue. See if there is a noticable difference after removing this from your system.

The freezes occur randomly.

I had a program that said it needed .NET 4.0 when I tried to run it (said it was not installed) so I guess that is why I installed the full. I will uninstall the Client version and see how that goes.
SEEMS I can't uninstall the Client instead of the Full, but when I uninstall the Full (CALLED Extended Version in my Programs and Features) it shuts down my program I needed (NoSleepDrive). If I try to restart NoSleepDrive it says ".NET Framework 4.0 is needed to run this program" or something like that. But I have had this program for several months. I will try uninstalling NoSleepDrive and the .NET and see how that goes though.

As for my virtualization software, I need it for work. We often make/use disc images in our machine programming., I have had it for about two years, and have never had this issue. I will uninstall it for now to see if the crashes stop, but I will need it installed. :/
What I am using now is Virtual CloneDrive, is there another that would be better if this one really is the cause for some reason?

Thank you for your help.Okay! Now the fun really starts.

I uninstalled the virtualization software, and the extra .NET framework. I went ahead and uninstalled NoSleepDrive too. Everything was fine, until today. It froze on me 3 times, and when I go to look in the Event Viewer...NO ERRORS. Apparently nothing went wrong. But the computer was still completely frozen.

I replaced my keyboard and mouse (a friend of mine at work thinks maybe the wireless receiver is going bad, so it is not that the computer froze but just that the signals from the mouse/keyboard are not reaching it.)

I will let everyone knows how that works as soon as I know. Quote
I needed (NoSleepDrive)
Hi... I am not sure if this open source software is common or widely used and with good feedbacks but if it worked for you before, check out the direct source for any updated version or fixes. Upon searching for NoSleepHD v. 2.0 consequently, the last or final version was 2009. I think it would be proper to remove it also for your system to completely check for further improvements and monitor it again for a couple of days. I noticed that, Jason2074 and removed that software, but the freezes are still occurring, even with a new wireless receiver and keyboard and mouse. Thank you for the advice though.

I am really not sure what my next step would be, as the freezes occur with no errors of any type. :/

I booted into Safe Mode and it froze there too. I ran a Ubuntu live CD and it froze there too, so now I am running things like MemTest+ to see if it is my RAM. I only just built this machine, so if some piece of hardware went bad I can return it, but for some reason this build is giving me a lot of problems.

I apologize if I sound frustrated, I tried to reword the message, but failed. I am really grateful for all the help ^.^I read your post and was amazed to see you have the exact same problem as me. A few small differences, I have the A85-M CSM, and I have 16 gigs of RAM. Windows 7 freezes about twice a day. I hadn't tried Linux yet but I was about to. If it freezes there maybe it's a BIOS issue, or bad hardware.

It's definitely not the RAM, I've TESTED it over and over.
It's not over heating, often these freezes happen while the system has been idle for hours.
I've been pouring over the Event logs in Windows, and as much as I like to blame Microsoft for the pain in the world, it doesn't look like they are to blame here.

Dang.I just noticed on your speccy output that your BIOS is comparatively old. I JUST flashed mine so we'll see how it goes.My BIOS is pretty old, but the last time I flashed by BIOS I bricked my computer, so I am trying to avoid that. That was about two years ago though, and I know more about computers now.

I am still having the freezing issue, even on Ubuntu and in Safe Mode. :/ At this point, I am pretty sure it is some type of hardware issue, but I can not seem to isolate what piece of hardware it is, as it does not generate an error message of any kind.

Update:

I already reinstalled Windows and now have a dual boot with Ubuntu (I had this about 6 months ago too, but I simply do not use Ubuntu often enough to justify the space usage, plus at the time my video card had no drivers for Ubuntu) and the freeze occurs in either system. I can not seem to replicate the freeze, but it is occurring frequently (about 2-3 times a day).

No error messages occur, no bluescreens in BlueScreenView or events in the Event Viewer.
Ran FurMark, no problems. Ran MemTest+ for 6 hours, no errors. Traded in a higher wattage power supply, still froze. Watched the temps, and nothing gets overheated. Set all BIOS options to their defaults, I never overclocked any of my hardware, all my drivers have been brought up to date, and when that did not work, I rolled them back, still the same.

At the freeze, anything plugged into the computer acts as though it has been unplugged, and any sound (music or videos) stutters for about 2-3 seconds then turns off. The screen simply "freezes" on the current screen, no lines or anything.

It seems to crash when I walk away more often than when I am using it. But it has froze while I am using it.

Honestly, I am lost. I do not know what my next step should be, as I have no idea what is causing the problem.

I suppose I will try to flash my BIOS, hopefully that helps.Upgraded to the newest BIOS last night. Froze again this morning.

I did not send anything back, unfortunately my computer is still freezing but not nearly as often (once in the last week).

Not sure about your issue, but mine seems to freeze when I leave something fullscreen, and then walk away (like youtube or VLC) but I still get no error messages or any indication of what is wrong. So I am just making sure to minimize/close things when I leave.

Good luck!

Solve : Windows 8 won't boot anymore...?

Answer»

I installed windows 8 earlier today and it ran fine, then when restarting to finish windows updates it went to a BLACK screen that ocassionaly flashes and I could move my cursor around. It ALWAYS does now and I can't enter safemode, I do not have a windows 8 cd as I did their download upgrade WIN 7 to win 8 deal.

Saber tooth p67 motherboard

I2600k processor

16 gb ram

Gtx 580 Zotac 3 gb card

Titanium fatality sound card

Velociraptor digital western 500 gb hard drive

G19 keyboard and g9x mouse

Help please.I have not run into that yet but I would try booting to the Windows 7 DVD and run startup repair, otherwise I think windows 8 also USES the small partition at the front of the drive to allow you to boot to the repair utility.

Good Luck,

Mike

Solve : new to windows 8 and want to wipe drives?

Answer»

please HELP, my computer geek friend is unwell, so I'm asking you guys.
I have segregated? my HARD drive into a c drive for admin files and d drive for documents and such.
I want/need to erase my D drive and possibly my C drive, after I backed it up.
So that it is clean of random rubbish and dodgy files that just appeared.
I've just installed Windows 8 but I kept all my apps and files so my drive isn't wiped.
Also do you know how to navigate windows 8 - like choose what shows on the main screen?
Some things when I just TRY to delete them it says I need administrator privileges.
I really just want to backup my files and wipe my drives then put my apps and files onto my desktop and main apps onto my metro screen.

My comp is a Amd Athlon 2 x 2 3.3ghz

Solve : windows without activation key?

Answer»

i`ve lost my recovery disk.
can i install and run windows 7 without ENTERING activation key for the time being?
i mean will it work?If you've lost the recovery disk, how will you install windows 7?

It might work for SOMETHING like 30 days without activation. You WILL, HOWEVER, need the PRODUCT key to install it. If the computer came with windows 7, that key is printed on a LABEL on the computer.

Once again; if I reset the router everything works, but if I attempt to change the network password, all is lost.

Anybody see anything that might be the cause of the problem?Quote

Once I change the network name or password, all wireless internet is lost
If you change the previous SSID(home router network ID) and password, the previously saved network profile for the particular router is disregarded. All wireless computers would see the newly set/replace SSID as another available network within range. By PROVIDING them the correct password key - encryption type set either WEP/WPA/WPA2, they will now be able to connect next time. Yes, but when I attempt to connect to the renamed network it doesn't even bring up the "insert key" window. It INSTANTLY moves to "no internet connection, troubleshoot".What computer model and is this IP configuration log posted on your 1st post? Please post the router model also and is it connected by a modem of what ISP? I see virtual wifi also on your IP log, can you see any enabled virtual wifi by the network connections and device manager? If yes, try disabling it. Yes, the log is on the first post. It's a Toshiba Satellite L505. The modem is an Actiontec GT701D. I am not sure where I can find the ISP. The router is a Cisco Linksys E1000.

"can you see any enabled virtual wifi by the network connections and device manager? If yes, try disabling it." I'm not sure what you mean by this.Check the laptop wifi switch if its enabled. Did you correctly set the wireless on Linksys router if its broadcast as available with security key and encryption? Go to Network and Sharing (for Win 7) and open Change adapter settings. Network icons available should only be for the Realtek Ethernet LAN and Realtek 802.11n Wireless LAN. Do you see a third network icon for virtual wifi adapter? The linksys E100 manual http://help.ecobee.com/attachments/token/howroilplaxny3u/?name=Linksys+E1000_V10_UG_USA_NC-WEB.pdf Go to wireless settings - Manual setup. Use the default settings as much as possible. Ignore the wireless MAC filter settings also and WPS. The three connections:
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller (connected)
Realtek RTL8191 Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC (attempting to authenticate)
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter (not connected)

I made everything default (wasn't much to do) and checked if it would wirelessly connect and it failed to do so.To connect wirelessly, remove first the ethernet or wired connection. Then hover your ARROW icon to the wifi icon by system tray. Check for the available wireless network - choose your home network new SSID. If you arrive at entering the password key, MAKE sure it matches the encryption key you've set which is either WEP, WPA, or WPA/WPA2 mixed mode.

* Try right-clicking the Microsoft Virtual Network and choose disable.
* If you have a software connection utility for the realtek wifi adapter, try connecting first from there.
* When removing wired connection, check the wireless light by the keyboard is enabled or a wireless switch.Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC
Physical Address: ‎00-26-B6-BD-EE-24
DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.67.165
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
IPv4 Default Gateway:
IPv4 DNS Server:
IPv4 WINS Server:
NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: Yes
Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::887d:6f18:5e35:43a5%11
IPv6 Default Gateway:
IPv6 DNS Servers: fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1, fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1, fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1

I rolled back the Realtek driver and the third network disappeared, however - it still attempts to authenticate and can't find any internet. Above are the details it provided me with.

No; you do not seem to understand that when I try to connect, it brings me to a mini window that says "Windows was unable to connect" and gives me options to cancel and troubleshoot. I do not even get a window to enter the key. Wifi is enabled on this laptop and this is the only device that is giving me problems. I think you need to remove all previous network profiles and start manually connecting to your new SSID home network. Go to Network and Sharing - Manage Wireless Network and right-click each and delete. Try connecting first as close as possible to the wireless router to eliminate the distance or range issue. Also, can you connect by other wifi spots?

Solve : Responding to prompts in bat file with a twist?

Answer»

I have a bat file to stop/START my message QUEUING. Since the MSMQ triggers are dependent on queuing being there, it will ask me if I really want to do this, and waits for a "Y". Not sure of the syntax to suppress or auto answer this prompt. Tried /Q and an echo pipe but neither worked. Here's the bat file (and the message is at the FIRST command:

net stop MSMQ
timeout 3
net start MSMQ
timeout 3
net start "Message Queuing Triggers"

TIA!

elaine
ivy, vaYou tried this? (pipe?)

1. echo a y character through a pipe

echo y | net stop WHATEVER
echo y | net start whatever

if so, try this, redirecting a file to console input

echo y > yes.txt
net stop whatever < yes.txt
net start whatever < yes.txt

You will appreciate that you really only need to make yes.txt once, and I leave you to guess what might be in no.txt...

I tried both METHODS, Salmon Trout, but in both cases (and just on the remote chance they are case sensitive, tried that too) they throw:

Do you want to continue this operation? (Y/N) [N]:
No valid response was provided.

Thanks,
elaineHave you tried it with a different switch, such as:

net stop MSMQ /y
We have a winner, Oldun!! That works great! Thank you!

I didn't see that as a switch on the net command--is that undocumented?

Cheers!

Solve : copying accented pdf documents into word 2010?

Answer»

Hi:
I checked previous POSTS and didn't find an answer to this question.
I need to copy a large accented pdf document into word 2010.
I know there are a couple of ways to do this; either VIA the Win7 character map,
or the Wd2010 symbol map.
These are fine if you are only dealing with a limited number of accented
characters, but if you've got several hundred (ROUGH count) of accented
characters is there anything a little more expedient you can do?
THANK You
rfa09 I have done this in Word 2003 and 2010. I just highlight some text (or choose "Select All") in the PDF, and then Edit, Copy, then in Word, choose "Paste". You will have to manage the layout in Word yourself, but the accented characters copy just fine.

Thank you for your help.
Always very much appreciated!!

Pls help, tnx. You should start with eliminating the possibility of bad RAM. The symptom you are describing is often caused when part of one of the sticks of RAM is bad so the computer runs fine until you hit the bad sectors in that stick. Pull out one stick at a time and if it crashes faster switch to the other stick, if it stops crashing you have your solution. Otherwise it may likely be a bad graphics card.Have you disconnected the usb hub as suggested above?Quote from: Allan on November 06, 2012, 05:49:37 AM
Have you disconnected the usb hub as suggested above?

ok i ll try it..but 1 thing i wud like to mention that i used memtest..which runs when window runs (not that mem..86++), i ran multiple instances of it- alloting equivalent of
6.5 GB ram and rest 1.5 was being used by system..so it ran fine, nothing came out

so i ll try yer method as well.

The Hub is your issue as both culprits point to it...
It can either be a software...or hardware issue but thats what it's narrowed down to.
Remove the Hub device via Device Manager and re-boot...you will be prompted to re-install the drivers on startup...insert the driver CD that came with it and run setup...
If this produces no joy-joy then the hub itself is failing and should be replaced....Quote from: patio on November 06, 2012, 01:42:02 PM

i have tried installing and unistalling different versions of this usb 2.0 wifi but especially during online gaming it has happened.

also today again i used my pc to test run standalone game "gta4" and it ran fine with no unexpected shutdown but after that 8hours of test run i started playing online game using that usb wifi it happened within an hour.

so i guess its the usb 2.0 hardware or software which is the culprit here but still i ll lookout for more standalone game test runs and online games test runs using usb wifi to give it 1more try..

Another thing i need help is..that this tp link usb wifi 2.0 i bought this online..so now whom should i return the device the online replacement or to the company service centers..and also what proof or explanation i can give to them to let them assure that its the hardware or software for this product which is failing?

pls help,ty.Remove completely the device and try wired first for a couple of days and check if bluescreen still appears. Are you sure there is not any overheating problem also?
Download Speccy and then install the program. To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.

Solve : write fault error writing device lpt1?

Answer»

Hi,
I use the net command 'net use LPT1: \\computername\printer ' to send my old dos stuff to the printer.
This works fine under XP and win7.
I just tried it on a vista computer and it won't work. I get the write FAULT ERROR message.
I thought maybe there is something wrong with the PORT. Device manager does not show an LPT1 port.
MODE LPT1 says 'Illegal device name'
Net use LPT1: \\computername\printer says 'command completed seccessfully'
I can not figure out if I have a port or not.
If this works in Win7 should it not work in Vista?

How are you attempting to start the net command 'net use LPT1: \\computername\printer '? Are you clicking the Windows Start button and then entering that command in the Start Search box, or are you opening a Command Prompt panel to do this?I open the command prompt.
type net use and it says
status local remote network

OK LPT1 \\computer\printer Microsoft Windows NetworkCan anyone tell me if I have an LPT1 port and if not how I can get one?
GeofflEither device is turned off in BIOS or you don't have a parallel port (LPT port).
Provide more INFO on the PC in questionI don't have a plug on the side of the computer but net use tells me I have an LPT1 port and mode tells me I don't.
If I hit F2 on startup (is that the Bios?) there is nowhere I can see anything about ports.

Id take it to get fixed but im being charged 80 and i dnt have that MONEY right now.2 options::
Look in your Manual or the online documentation to see if it came with a hidden Recovery partition and erite down the procedure for booting to it and RUNNING it...
Or
Contact Dell and requesr a Recovery CD and do it that way...

Both methods will wioe the HDD completely and take it nack to Day 1 status.

All can be done in 1 trip to the library.

Solve : excessive buffering?

Answer»

Is some buffering common to EVEN a new computer? When I watch any youtube video or other video I have to put up with a lot of buffering. I use Realplayer to record and watch later but it would be nice to just watch the video. I'm using a HP PRESARIO with a lot of ram and a dual core processor and Vista. If VIDEOS from the web are buffered a lot, it suggests a slow or badly performing internet connection.
QUOTE from: Salmon Trout on December 16, 2012, 08:16:50 AM

If videos from the web are buffered a lot, it suggests a slow or badly performing internet connection.

That's not entirely true.

Quote from YouTube: Clear your browser's cache and cookies. http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=74662

To do this simply go into your browsers settings and choose 'clear cache' then use something like Ccleaner to clear your cookies.

CCleaner download: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

I have 80+mbp/s and I often have issues with buffering videos at 720p+ on YouTube. I could simply be server load that causes the issue but I have found that clearing my cache periodically and also clearing my cookies can sometimes alleviate the problem.

Just to show I'm not lying.

Solve : got windows 8 yesterday - my review + what do you think of windows 8??

Answer»

i think its an interesting concept, start menu's taking some getting used to though.

i hear its pretty secure so thats good.

but i really dont like the apps so far....the games one is mostly for xbox stuff, music app feels like a advertisement app that plays songs (id prefer itunes or something and im not biased towards any company)

maps app, i rather just go to google.com/maps seems better.

the weather app is cool but whats with the body lotion commercials?

seems like most the apps are commercials and its much easier to use UR browser to do stuff....guess i kinda prefer the old desktop style but im guessing this is better for tablets.

but seems like id rather just manage my music, pics, etc through "my computer" and windows explorer rather than their apps...

i pretty much uninstalled most the apps that it came with lol

but its all good...using google chrome to browse right now like a bouse #flex
This O/S was created primarily (in order to have access to ALL it's features) to try and enhance the competitiveness of it's entry into the tablet market with the introduction of "Surface". All other types of computers will NOT have access to ALL the win 8 O/S has to offer.truenorthI'll probably be derided for my observations here...but i summed it up in my own mind after running the RC for a few months and installing the full version this week...
It's a tablet OS that's being jammed onto the desktop PC market.
NOTHING more...nothing less. There are two problems with a lot of reviews about Windows 8.

First, they assume Windows 8 is designed for tablets. They come to this conclusion because in their narrow mind, only tablets would ever have touch features. What such a perspective fails to take into account is that touch is not necessarily only something that will be found in tablets.

Sure, right now it is a prevalently tablet only feature. And right now most of us cannot imagine trying to use, say, a desktop monitor with touch features. But there is something very important to consider; right now, we use a mouse.

The mouse, and specifically any pointing device is merely an abstraction- touch screen removes this abstraction. it is now direct. The mouse and pointing devices exist because the technology to create affordable reliable touch-screens was simply not available at the time.

However, on the horizon, this may not be the case. Touch-enabled monitors are available at a premium not unlike that seen when LCDs were first introduced. It is not beyond reason to surmise that Touch-enabled monitors will become increasingly prevalent, and it additionally makes a lot of sense to have Operating Systems available that take advantage of those capabilities. In some RESPECTS I consider the touch-oriented features of Windows 8 not unlike Cleartype; Cleartype was designed for use with LCD monitors, and was introduced back when LCD monitors had a price premium over CRTs. Not unlike Windows 8's touch features in relation to standard pointing devices, Cleartype was quite usable on CRT Monitors.

And now, it's hard to find a machine that doesn't have a LCD Monitor.

many of the issues people raise could be considered one of perspective; they are looking at how Windows 8 works in the here and now rather than in the then and later context. Many of the same parallels could be drawn to other "fringe" technologies that became mainstream. Much of the contributing factor that helped push those products into the mainstream was their falling price, but it could also be argued that early support for those technologies contributed to it immensely.

Quote

I've stopped thinking of touch as some exotic, add-in technology contained in SPECIALIZED devices. I belatedly realized that I love to touch computers. And why not? We constantly point and gesture at everything in our lives, including our screens. It's completely natural to want to interact with computers by touching them.

There are a lot of myths about Windows 8 that are perpetuated around the web, and the idea that Windows 8 is designed solely for use by touch users is one of them.

For example: what is one of the biggest changes to Windows 8? The removal of the start menu, or, more appropriately, the changing of it.

Many decry this as a bad change; however, much of the same could be heard from the switch to XP's start menu and then to Vista/7's start menu.

But one has to consider the most common usage of the start menu, particularly with Vista and 7. Now I cannot speak to anybody elses usage habits, but I can say that personally the absolute only reason I ever use the start menu is to start programs (this is not surprising) but more importantly, I don't use the "All Programs" Menu. I simply type it into the Search bar. In fact, when I've had to go back to XP or earlier for one reason or another, I almost feel like I am missing a limb (figuratively, of course) or that I'm trying to do WORK looking through a straw, simply because I don't have search available. For example, in Vista/7 starting, say, Paint, is as simple as pressing the windows key, typing paint, and pressing enter.

With XP and earlier you either create a desktop shortcut (which is why so many people had lots of the things all over the place) or you navigate through the start menu All Programs list. hardly time effective. People that have moved to Vista and 7 eventually learn and leverage the search functionality and find it indispensable. (Same for similar functionality provided in other more recent OS versions).

How has this most typical use case changed in windows 8? Well, functionally, it hasn't. The exact same motions will do the same thing. It does look a lot different (personally I like it's new look) but it does the same thing.

For those that want the Windows 7/Vista style start menu, you really have two options- on is to buy something like Start8 from StarDock, which returns the start menu... or, the more intelligent option, simply stick with Windows Vista/7.

Solve : Cannot start windows 7?

Answer»

Replaced my HD and used Win backup to restore the system. Now Win will not start. I see the Dell screen, then "Windows is starting", then a blank screen.
I have shut down and restarted 4 times - same thing. Tried starting in safe mode, but what do I do when I am in it?Is it a laptop or desktop and what brand/model? Do you have the Windows disc or Repair disc (created on some OEM laptops)? What were the problems that made you replace the HD aside from probably a failing drive...?Also what exact method was used to create this Win backup ? ?I used Windows 7 IMAGE backup onto ext HD
I have a Dell 8100 desktop
Replaced HD with same size, 1TB (ORIG was failing and made the BU when I realized I would have to replace it)
Was running Win 7 64bit
Do have the Dell OS reinstallation CD, but prefer to get a duplicate of my old HD
Do have a boot discWindows Image Backup requires a repair disc or Windows disc in some cases for the image to be bootable. Check the Repair tutorial in Windows 7 link http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html Good luck.I did all that, but now after restoring a second time, I see my screen is just dark and blank.
I don't know what to do. I always end up on this blank screen.Shut down and restarted with F12 and changed the boot to USB. Got the starting windows screen and then the dark screen.
I have the boot disc and the USB backup, but starting from both does not get Windows going. Is the old image STILL reliable or bootable? Did you make a complete image/backup successful? Try using Macrium instead http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
In continuation to the blank screen see http://louisgale.blogspot.com/2011/10/restoring-windows-7-backup-to-new-hard.html

Using the repair disc http://www.winhelp.us/index.php/windows/backup-and-restore-windows/windows-7-backup-and-restore/restore-a-system-image-in-windows-7.html#.UOfEmXdkZuA
So I have to put the old HD back in, download Macrium and make another bu? That means deleting the old bu I just made? I assume I must make the bu from the old failing HD, right?
Btw, where can I buy the SCREWS that hold the HD in? I can't put both hds in because I only have the 4 original screws.Update. Decided to just start over with the new HD. Formatted it to get the old bu off. Put the Dell Win Cd in and started. Still not working!
I get a screen with:

Windows failed to start.
Insert Win cd and restart (have done this five times)
Choose language settings - never get this far because I get this "Win failed to start" screen

I can't even put Windows on a blank HD!STATUS. 0xc000000eDo you have AHCI/SATA hard drive mode in BIOS? I am not sure of what you mean made a repair 5 times and what messages appeared after the repair? How did you find out that the old drive is failing?

Solve : Win 7 dvd maker audio codec?

Answer»

Greetings all,
New to using Win 7 dvd maker. Burned a file to dvdr disc. Have video but no audio when put in dvd player. Have used g-spot to identify the audio codec. Now what to do ? or will I need to purchase software to make this work ? Thx.It should be working...
Speakers work otherwise ? ?
Have you checked Control Panel/Sound to make sure nothings on mute ? ?Let me start over. Took a home video that I WISHED to send to a family member on a disc that they could play on their TV dvd player. Successfully burned the disc w/Win 7 DVD maker. When I put the disc in my DVD player - video great/no audio. When I preview the video in the Win 7 dvd maker program it also has video but no audio. Over an hour ago I googled "No audio in Win 7 dvd maker" and became exponentially confused about supported audio codecs in Win 7 dvd maker. Thx.I suspect the way it was recorded as the issue then...Win7 ships with all the latest vid and audio codecs.

Actually now after re-reading your post for the 3rd time it may have been the format you burned it in...find out what format the TV DVD player uses and re-burn it in that format...What was the original source of the video/audio and precisely how were they input to the computer?truenorthOriginally recorded via Toshiba Camileo H30 camcorder. Downloaded to my pictures "Open folder to view files using windows explorer". When opened with windows media player audio works. g-spot identified the following audio codecs.

Audio Format:
Code: 0x00ff:

The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:

{MPA Decoder Filter}
{ffdshow Audio Decoder}
--> {DivX AAC Decoder}
{RealAudio Decoder}

DirectShow was also able to find a codec to render it - the sound for this media clip should work fine.

See the DirectShow Render details for more info. You didn't answer my question above...what media files/sources does the TV DVD recorder support ? ?Sorry - My TV DVD player - DVD video, DVD+R/RW {VR format}, DVD-R/RW [Video format}, CD-R/RW, Audio CD , MP3. Yet I STILL believe there is an issue with Win7 DVD maker decoding the audio format because I get video but no audio when I preview the file within the Win 7 DVD maker. This is the part that baffles me " When opened with windows media player audio works." Can we presume that when you say the audio works it is in both instances of from the "my pictures" computer file and the cd disc or is it just from the file?Do you have any other dvd burning software you can try? We know at LEAST the audio did get transfered from the camcorder to the computer so i believe you may be correct that the issue is with the file format it is on the disc.I have not used win 7 dvd maker so i don't know what your choices are re the video/audio formats available within that program. Can i assume that you have never done this before with that program? truenorthTruenorth - Every statement you made is spot - on. The transfer from camera to computer is good and I have audio when I play the file on my computer using windows media player. The issue is with using The Win7 DVD maker to create a disc that will work in a (standard) TV DVD player. And yes this is my first time using Win7 DVD maker. I gather that there are programs available for purchase that will do this for me, but I always prefer free (if it will work). I have downloaded a program from Major Geeks called "Format Factory" that I am hoping it will convert the file into an audio codec that Win7 DVD maker can use. Will let you know. Thx.Ok, Here is what i would like you to do.Download and install this FREE dvd burner program
http://www.sothinkmedia.com/movie-dvd-maker/
To put your mind at ease i have used this program countless times. It is by far my preferred burning software for DVD even instead of many paid DVD burning software programs i have also used. If it works for you i want you to come back and tell us.Then i shall tell you something that seems to be almost unique to this program that is a tremendous advantage even above paid software in my opinion. Use the file you already transfered from the camcorder that is in your "my pictures". In setting up the burn process make sure that you check to finalize the disc. If you have any questions re the process come back and we shall see what we can do. Good luck, truenorthThank you Truenorth. Before I came back to read your post "File Factory" had finished converting to video clip to another AVI file. I then used' Win 7 DVD maker' to burn that file to disc and the audio works. I have downloaded the link you GAVE and will start from scratch with it to see if that is an easier process. Thanks again for your help.Great to hear that at least you have made a successful usable disc. I must confess i know nothing about "File Factory" however the "unique advantage " in the "sothink" (to be divulged ) is what sets it apart.truenorthTruenorth - No way to install sothink without it installing incredibar toolbar and changing my default homepage in FF and IE, both of which give me a warning from WOT. Is it safe to proceed with the install and then remove all the add - ons?. Thx.Very interesting! No additional features (other than the dvd burner software) have been required as a condition of downloading the software. As to the FORWARD ability to uninstall the additional non desired items i cannot comment as it has not occurred on any of my downloads of Sothink.
I am offering an alternative site where you can see if the same situation occurs.
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/windows/Sothink-Movie-DVD-Maker-Review-192537.shtml
and here is the one one that is the direct link from the "about" tab of the "help" menu of one of my actual Sothink software installations.Try it 1st.

Solve : Trying to connect my new laptop to my homegroup?

Answer»

Finally!!!!! I never realized I named the computers the same name. No other link or forum post ever mentioned it. Probably because it should have been obvious but I have so much crap going on I didn't even think to check to make sure they were different when I created the laptop name. When you MESS with stuff like this day in and day out saying THANK you doesn't really do it justice. That being said THANK YOU. I think I know the answer to this but I'll ask just to make sure. More than one site mentioned making sure certain services were started and turned to automatic. This is the list:
DNS Client
Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Peer Networking Grouping
HomeGroup Provider
HomeGroup Listener
SSDP Discovery
UPnP Device Host

My question is now that I've made all these services run automatically will it slow down my system? Thanks again manThose services may slow down (slightly) your boot up time, but they shouldn't have any long term effects on slowing your computer or netwrok speed at all.Congrats!!Hi, I know this has been a while since the last post but I seem to have the same problem but both my desktop and my laptop have different names. So I tried to go and look into command prompt with ipconfig /all and found out that my desktop has its NODE TYPE to HYBRID and my laptop has its NODE TYPE to Diffusion.

If this is the problem I would really like to know what to do in order for my homegroup to work again.

Thank you!if you use win 7, just connet to network, join grop, input homegrup code

Solve : Where is spell check??

Answer»

Hi -
I just submitted a LONG question but could not find "spell check". What happened to "spell check? I need it. BobIf you did spell something wrong, then a red LINE appears underneath to notify you of a word that is wrong. No red line, no spelling mistakes. If you do get a red line, right click for a list of alternatives.

Though you must understand that a correct, out-of context spelling will not be flagged

i.e. To rip presents you need paper and sticky type (rip should be wrap and type should be tape, but because they are the correct spelling, they are not flagged)
I like how you invoked the Holiday spirit in your example....

http://videoclip.cefapa.com/noddy-holder-I/noddy-holder-its-christmas-voice-clipHow the described spell-check works is based entirely on the browser they are using.

It seems clear to me that they are referring to the built in Spell-Check capability that used to be available through the FORUM software. To answer the question: The forum was upgraded a bit ago and Forum-integrated Spell Check is just one of many casualties of the upgrade.Thank you GENTLEMEN. I see what happened. Now all I have to do is keep from falling into the trap that reddevilggg illistrated. Bobbobhigh,If as BC states the component part of CH that performed spell check is no LONGER a part of it then for your information (again as BC points out) i use Opera as my browser and the spell check as reddevilggg describes it does provide the service. You might want to try using Opera for awhile. If your as atrocious as i in the spelling dept. i wouldn't want to be without one. truenorthtruenorth -
Thanks for your suggestion but I think I will stay where I am at. I am not smart enough to handle more than one thing at a time. Notice my problem in my post about e-mails. I am trying to take on Windows Live Mail and I am getting educated. Bob

Solve : PC losing internet connection when a Mac is on...?

Answer»

Well i have a PC with Windows 7 , and my bro have a brand new Macbook Pro... The problem is everytime he turns on his Macbook, my internet stops working... or sometimes it just get way too SLOW. I've tried reseting router alot of times, changing modem, reinstalling network drivers... setting up windows firewall and nothing comes.... Is there a way I can fix this? its really annoying Help!!!

PD- sorry for my english its kinda poor Your use of English is just fine. You have not told us what type of internet service you are connected to nor how you are connected. So to perhaps save some time while you inform us of those things i shall make a couple of assumptions. The connection service is DSL and the method is wireless. Here is a link that explains a variety of possible causes for your issue and suggested remedies in each case. Please review them and see if any can resolve your problem. Return and tell us of the results.

truenorth"Apple gets more insidious by the day".....

Just kiddin.
Thx for responding Truenorth... Well my ISP is Liberty Cable: Speed 20Mb. My Desktop is connected VIA Ethernet cable, my brother's MacbookPro is via Wireless. Thing is if i use my laptop via Wireless... happends the same... btw My router is Linksys E1200... hope that helps Ok thank you for the ADDITIONAL data. Now what if any of the suggested things from my web site link have you tried and what were the results?truenorthWell i've tried everything on that WEBSITE, and the problem persist... even i did Flush DNS... I'm thinking maybe is my Linksys Router... even tho i've restarted it a bunch of times... lets see what it goes... still playing with it...Is your brother running a torrent client on startup? If so it is possible that it could be set to throttle up his sharing while he is not using the computer.

Also you may want to check your IP (and his) to see if you have set a conflicting static IP.
You might try using Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in case the issue is related to DNS problems on the router
You could try updating the firmware on the Linksys

Thanks,

MikeNope he's not using a Torrent Software... anyways i tried the public DNS, and problem persist, my last try is router... but its always when he turns on his Mac... RIGHT now here's not @ home, and im using internet very well... once he comes, it drains all the internet and i stay with nothing. Last thing i tried was connecting all Wireless PCs direct to the Modem... and leaving only my PC to the Router...Btw i already re-installed windows again >< Thx for answering ppl.I recently read an article about regulating BANDWIDTH on a linksys router ( which is what i believe you have).I am including a web link (google) that talks about how to regulate bandwidth. Perhaps it will be of help. http://www.google.ca/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=regulating+bandwidth+home+network&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest

Solve : My Windows 7 is counterfeit says Microsoft, where can I download Ultimate free??

Answer»

Microsoft said I dont have a genuine copy, (no key code came with the pc) which I beleive, is slowing down.
Where can I download it for free (LEGITIMATE), the websites ads say free, but crawl you in after they diagnose your pc
and ask for a credit card number. You have been around here long enough to know we do not assist with those type of requests...
Either order one from the PC manuf. or go buy one.If I buy one, does it override the old one that came with the pc? Should I be prepared for missing files, SETTINGS, etc?You can run a Repair Install...if done properly all your apps and data will remain intact...

Win7 Repair Install...

Then when finished do the registration with your new key...
You really should call the PC manuf...you would probably save yourself some money.
They may even be able to provide the original KEYCODE if you have serial #'s etc...Unfortunatly you have to have a disc to update the Win7 repair install, so I ended up shelling out $210 to Microsoft again, the new key code would not update, kept saying it was not genuine, after an hour with her on the phone, she said it may not have been counterfeit, but "the Index Performance would not refresh from a 3, as the BIOS setup for the video driver needs new settings from the manuf." Yeah, tried telling her calling Gateway will not get you the time of day.
So I will be stopping payment on the card for this one.
The free downloads on the internet are NOTHING but traps to get your credit card number, & even ebay dog & pony shows with their new installs & updates look like hit & miss numbers they are trying to recycle, so I stated away from them. The only two upopened packages for offer were $250.
Thought by dealing direct with Microsoft would solve the problem, not, it was running good before I got their pop ups, at least I had someone who ATTEMPTED to speak good Engish this time.
No reason to be shelling out that kind of money...
The #800 Win authorisation phone help is way above average...and i've never had them give me a hard time...most times i had the clients PC back up and authorised in less than 10 minutes.
The other option also that i suggested which was contacting Gateway certainly wouldn't cost 200 Bucks either.
Sounds like sour grapes all the way around.Win 7 charges $99 for phone support as the pc is over 2 years old. The 800 numbers I have is 1-800-642-7676 & 800-936-5700. Gateways pcs are not geared for any serial numbers that are over 2 years old also, but they also told me Microsoft could not let me go back to Win XP, even if I had the old key #..........I dont know, depends on who you get on the phone.
Someone on a forum said I probably had a bad optical drive, am going to look into that.
That may be related to the Bios video driver not updating & allowing Win 7 to update.Quote from: runninbare on January 05, 2013, 10:09:11 AM

it was running good before I got their pop ups
What's this about? What pop-ups, and what did they say? The "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" message can appear erroneously on otherwise legitimate installations of Windows, So any action before determining that the message is actually legitimate is IMO premature. The activation # is Free...always has been.
Can't speak for Gateway but just last month i was able to order a Dell factory restore CD for an 8 year old PC...the age of the PC shouldn't matter...
Total cost $14.51 including shipping...

Solve : How to forward e-mails?

Answer»

Hi -
If this subject belongs in another place please correct it. When I get an e-mail I want to forward it often has a lot of addresses at the top. I want to delete these addresses before I forward the e-mail. When I was using Windows Vista I could highlight what I did not want to SEND and click "cut". This deleted what was highlighted. I am now using Windows 7 and that procedure will not work. My provider is Suddenlink and I am using their mail system. They suggested that I highlight the body of the e-mail and use "copy" and "paste" to a new message. If the e-mail is long this is not good. Surely there is a way to delete the addresses. Any help will be appreciated. Bob Turn off CC (carbon copy) in your email app...

I need more instruction. The only place I see CC is when I am composing an e-mail and then I don't see any way to turn it off. Thanks for your help. Bob Quote from: bobhlgh on December 18, 2012, 05:40:38 PM

My provider is Suddenlink and I am using their mail system.
In other words, you have an email ACCOUNT in the format of [emailprotected], or [emailprotected], right? But, you use Windows Live Mail for handling your email, including the Suddenlink email account, right?

When I say you use Windows Live Mail for handling your email, this means you have the email program from Microsoft called Windows Live Mail installed on your computer and you are using it for your email. Is that correct?

Yes, it will if you are, indeed, using Windows Live Mail for your Suddenlink email account. Just highlight those email addresses and either hit the Delete key or right click and select Cut.

I do not use Windows Live Mail as far as I know. When I got on suddenlink.net my address became "[emailprotected]". On my home page there is an icon labled "mail" and when I click on that I get my e-mail and I can send e-mail. Is this the information you WANTED? Thanks for your reply Bobsoybean -
I checked and found Windows Live Photo Gallery listed but no Windows Live Mail listed.
Perhaps Suddenlink does not have what I want and I should go to Windows Live Mail. Can you give me instructions on how to get and use Windows Live Mail? Thanks BobQuote from: bobhlgh on December 18, 2012, 05:40:38 PM

Hi- My name is Shannon and I am with Suddenlink. On our support site there are tutorials that can help walk you through different functions of using email. Here is one on forwarding http://help.suddenlink.com/Internet/Pages/AutomaticallyForwardedtoOtherAddressesinWebMail.aspx. If you need any further assistance, feel free to email me DIRECTLY at shannon-AT-suddenlink-DOT-com. Thanks!SDLshannon -
I can forward e-mails by clicking on "forward" and "send". What I want to do is delete all the addresses that are at the top of the e-mail (note my first post). I have contacted suddenlink 3 times and nobody seems to be able to tell me how to get RID of the addresses in the manner that I want to. Thanks Bobsoybean -
I went to Google and got Windows Live Mail. Now what do I do with it. Do I have to set up a new e-mail address? Any help will be appreciated. Bobsoybean -
I am making progress (I think). I now have an address (____________et) in Windows Live Mail. Does this mean that all my e-mail will now come to Windows Live Mail and not to suddenlink.net? Bob

Solve : Sims 3 and Intel Graphics Accelerator i5core????

Answer»

Hi there,

I have purchased a new HP Elitebook with a Intel Graphics Accelerator i5Core video CARD. I installed the sims 3 on it and it ran smoothly up to a point when the screen went black a few times and the game crashed! I got a note saying that: Display driver Intel Graphics accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and successfully recovered. But still the game keep crashing with the same msg and black screen till it reach a blue screen saying the game crashed. All my system requirements are correct. I have Windows 7 32bit... They SAID the game WOULD run well on it!

Can someone help me??? I've set everygraphic detail to low and it still crashes even with 800x600 I'd download and run Speedfan and look at your GPU temp. I am willing to bet that the videogame is ROASTING your GPU a COMMON problem with laptops/netbooks and video games. The GPU overheats and leads to crashes, black screen, pixelation, etc

Solve : Help with building a windows 7 deployment server.?

Answer»

I am trying to build a windows 7 imaging server where i can boot from a usb stick then connect to the network to image new pc. This is going to be my first server setup and I don't know how do it, please help.If your going to go with WDS formally called RIS with say Server 2008 R2, I'd actually go with PXE (network) Boot which is easier than adding instructions to USB drive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhIx4ZL0IL0 I cant VIEW this video from work DUE to youtube block, but I am guessing this should help.

Only catch I have ever had with RIS with Server 2003 for XP Pro installations was that it worked great for a bunch of the same workstations where the NIC's were all the same. However if you have a mix of workstations you will need to have multiple images available from the RIS/WDS menu to account for different NIC drivers. For my odd duck workstations, I had a pile of Intel Pro 100 PCI NIC's and I would stuff one into an available PCI slot to push the image without having to create a different image with NDIS2 NIC drivers. So in the shop no matter what came thru my door for workstations to image deplay with Windows XP Pro, as long as it was a desktop with a PCI slot, I could deploy XP Pro to it without issues. I'd perform about 5 at a TIME at the most, but after hours when i wasnt going to cripple everyones bandwidth in the building passing 15GB to each workstation over 100mbps network.

Haven't played with WDS for 2008 or 2012 YET, only RIS with 2003, but will help as much as I can. Thank you sir... I really apreciate your help. The video you sent me is very helpful, I saw the wds with usb stick to deploy method i like it and I would like to try it. I am going to use the pxe method you mentionned but if you can help me get a link with instruction on how to set one up and have the boot file on a usb stick to connect to the network I would be very happy.
Thank you,
