Solve : Windows 7 64-bit wont take Service Pack 1 update?

Answer»

Windows 7 64-bit wont take Service Pack 1 update with error in the attached screenshot.... any suggestions?

I disabled MS Security Essentials according to this page: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/troubleshoot-problems-installing-service-pack

But that didnt help allow it to patch. Ran Malwarebytes on this system on top of full scan and it comes up clean. Never been infected this build.

Attached is screenshot of error that comes up when installing SP1.

Hardware is ( My wifes computer ):

ASUS Motherboard
Pentium E5400 2.7Ghz Dual-core
4GB DDR2 Corsair RAM 800Mhz
250GB SATA HD (with 21GB Free) * should be plenty of free space for Service Pack to install.
GeForce 9800GT PCIe Videocard
OS Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium

Looking at this site and others comments I wonder if its an ASUS issue with SP1. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/how-do-i-get-w7sp1-installed-onto-my-pc-error/88227571-2661-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1&tm=1303581532553

I haven't followed the steps on this site yet to perform the repair installation, but can if thats the only option to fix this. Figured I'd run this by everyone here before going through repair install.

Her computer has been running fine, but I decided to inspect the system for first time in a long time and saw that she was not at SP1. Tried msupdates through normal means and got error. Downloaded and burned to DVD the 2GB SP1 ISO and attempted to force install SP1 off the DVD Rom and still stops with same error message and location.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]It really appears to me given the positive results of the users that tried the method stated in your link that that is your way to go.It has been some time since i installed that update on this laptop so i don't remember if there was a distinction between a 32 or 64 bit O/S in regards to the SP1 (but i feel confident you would have looked for that).I would try the method in your link (if you have the discs.)truenorth Quote from: truenorth on December 18, 2012, 11:15:11 AM

i don't remember if there was a distinction between a 32 or 64 bit O/S in regards to the SP1

They are totally different.

I suspected so but as i said it has been a while and the memory bank isn't what it used to be. However given what from previous POSTS and/or threads i have seen involving the O/P i felt confident that he would have checked for that.truenorthOk thanks everyone, will go the route of the repair install. I just figured I'd methion this here in case this might be pointing to a system compromization. All tests showed the system clean, but I didnt want to place this into the malware forum as for there is nothing to prove that this is related to any malware and figured if any specific malware causes this that I am not aware of, that someone else would bring it to my attention so that I'd perform a full system rebuild vs just a repair in which you would think that a repair would fix it, but maybe a hidden software malware gremlin was hiding out somewheres from being picked up by Microsoft Security Essentials AV, Malwarebytes, and TDSSKiller.

The last time I had a service pack not take was way BACK many years ago with Windows 2000 Professional when going from SP3 to SP4, and the issue was that the updates had to be done in a certain order or SP4 wouldnt patch, so I ended up having to remove one of the patches that was installed under SP3, then perform SP4 rollup patch, and then install the patch that was originally installed on SP3 onto SP4 in that order to get the system fully patched without errors.

Maybe this one is just a corruption of some sort, so will perform repair install when I get home in the morning.

Regarding SP1 for 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64, I did try to apply the correct x64 patch of SP1 for Windows 7, so after repair install, hopefully it will take without issues.

Thanks everyone =)

Solve : Keyboard switched from English to French?

Answer»

I have a girlfriend that works in Windows 7 and she was TYPING away in English and when we SENT to use to apostrophe it was an e with an accent (french). How did she managed to do this and how to solve it. I could not help her since I am still in XP. Thank you for all your help.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ID/windows7/Change-your-keyboard-layout

You may have to follow the instructions under the 'Add an INPUT language' to add English first. How do you know it is French?
It might be International English, which has the behavior MENTIONED. The International English is used by authors who need to type a few words in French, Portuguese or Spanish.
Reference:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306560
You van still type normal English while it is on.Whenever this happens to me, PRESSING Left CTRL and Right SHIFT usually works. If it doesn't, just follow the directions from the above posts.

Solve : Task Manager has no 'Dropdoens'??

Answer»

Hiya FELLA's! I got a query about my 'Tak Manager' display menu mates. As I understand it, when Task Manager is opened, one is presented with some menu choices. Well my Task manager doesn't have any choices, other than to disable the running programs ?? Has anyone had this and is there a solution guys??? Double clik the empty bar at the top...Or double-click anywhere on the window border to toggle between normal and simple views. There double clicking don't do nothing lads Here is how it looks:

When I click at the top nowt happens in fact this is all I get whatever I do fellas?? Double-click an empty area of the window. You've probably accidentally double-clicked it before and put it into small-footprint mode, which is what you have shown there.

An empty area, of course, being a place OUTSIDE the list or the buttons.I can click on the spaces here until I am blue in the face guys! ......nothing happens ? Try DOUBLE clicking on the blank border area just to the left of the END Task button at the bottom of the panel. You have more space to work with there than at top or the sides.

What other double-clicking actions do you sometimes do? I'm wondering whether you are just not clicking at the right speed when you double click. Are you doing this? ("Click" means "double click")

Once again yous guys have come up trumps! It took a bit of doing! I went all around the fringe of the border clicking away like mad. Nothing was happening until .SUDDENLY the correct menu APPEARED. Flipping Heck! Thanx Guys!

Till next year... have a great xmas ...but BE GOOD and STAY SOBER!
if you had this happen unexpectedly, and then found it very HARD to reverse, maybe you should consider if your mouse is working properly.
Also, double-click time might be too short.

Solve : How to reinstall MS Hearts?

Answer»

I am using Win 7 home edition and open my pc today and found my link to the hearts program missing. I went to accessories and went into games and it was no longer there, I did a search on my c drive and there was no hearts exe. I have no idea where it went. I went online and found what appears to be a common solution , to download and run SYSTEM Update Readiness Tool for Windows. Did that and nothing still. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks Tap F8 repeatedly at powerup to get to the Advanced start up Menu...
Run the Startup Repair...last choice at the bottom i believe.
Re-boot when it is finished. Thanks, ran the utility and was unsuccessful returning ms hearts but on further investigation I discovered that many of my programs are missing. They don't show up in the start menu and when I went into windows to get their exe files to make short cuts they didn't work either but others did when I tried this,They do show up in the CONTROL panel under programs that are installed though. so it appears that something has happened to my pc besides just loosing ms HEATS. Is it time for a restore? or are there any other possible solutions?
ThanksSounds like you managed to lose just shortcuts...it would be a small chore to restore them all as we don't know what all is missing...however it can be done.
A CLEAN re-install will wipe out all your data and take the PC back to Day 1 status so you have some decisions to make here...thanks but I prefer not doing that, only as a last resort, how about system restore?Worth a try at this point...go back a WEEK or so if possible...If that fails, you can try going into 'programs and features' in control panel. On the left-hand pane, there should be an option 'turn windows features on and off'. Click that to open the features selector. Under 'games', look for hearts. If it's unchecked, check it and click ok. If it's checked already, then uncheck it and ok, and finally go back in and check it again to reinstall it.Great! Thanks got it, turning off and on the feature did it, rebooted and it showed up, now if I can just figure out why my special program folder was lost with all my shortcuts to it. I ran ccleaner some time a week ago or so , do you think that might have done it?Could have...
CCleaner has options of what to remove and not remove...spend a bit reading the Help file before your next run...
I doubt it would remove shortcuts however...do others use this PC ?Not really although its possible that my house sitter did, not sure .....

Solve : Comp Crashing = bright yellow or blue & gray striped screen?

Answer»

My COMPUTER is crashing even while doing low demand things like web surfing and word processing. When it happens the screen turns all bright yellow or it's blue and gray vertical stripes. It just STARTED doing this about 4 weeks ago. It was maybe once the first week - but it's been getting more frequent and yesterday it crashed twice.

My comp:
OS: Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit
CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 2011 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80619i73820
MB: ASUS P9X79 PRO LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL9Q-16GBSR
VID CARD : XFX FX-795A-TNBC Radeon HD 7950 Black 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2

I have 3 120mm fans, a 200m fan and a 135mm one that looks like the *censored*-end of an old hairdryer on my CPU

A friend of mine helped me build this comp off Newegg in August.

If you want any addition info I can probably find it - just ask.Does it do the same thing in safe mode? Do you hear or observe anything (other than the screen dysfunction) when it happens--like loud or changing sounds? Was there anything that you changed on the computer when this 1st appeared? Other than the display does anything else happen like the computer actually shutting down? What do you do to recover from this occurrence? Is there a commonality to the timing of when this event likely occurs such as after a similar time of the computer being on?truenorthI haven't tried safe mode as there hasn't been much commonality with the time. One time it's been on for 2 hours and crashed while I'm in Open Office, but there are days when I run my games (TERA and SWTOR) for 10+ hours and nothing has happened at all. I've had 3-4 days between a crash - then days like the day before I first posted this it was 2 times in one day

There is no loud sounds, changes in fan speed, funny smells, etc. The monitor turns either solid yellow or it has blue and gray vertical stripes. The computer does not shutdown, but it will not respond (that I can see) to any input. I tried to shut it down by pressing ctrl-alt-del twice as a test to whether it's still working behind the screen, but there was nothing. Not sure if MS took that out between XP and 7 though. To recover I have to restart the computer from the tower otherwise it will just sit there.

It's crashed about 8 times now. I have changed nothing inside the tower since it was put together in August. Nothing around it has changed, it's never moved from where it sits on my desk and I blow the dust out of it every couple weeks. Likely either the monitor or the graphics card. Try a different monitor first. For whatever it's worth given your answers to my questions i concur with CC's thought,truenorthHmmm... my comp crashed again LAST night. I tried power cycling the monitor several times, it does it's bootup routine and then the screen returns to bright yellow each time. But when I reboot the tower, it fixes itself right away. So can I rule out the monitor?

Solve : Registry key to change registered owner isn't there?

Answer»

I BOUGHT a used Acer laptop with Windows 7. Not a big deal, but the previous owner is the listed owner so his name pops up on things like my calendar. Looked up how to change it by going to regedit and FOUND where it should be - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion - but it isn't there. Any IDEAS on what to do from here? Step by step is good for me as messing with the Registry makes me nervous. Thanks! The articles you already found were often for Windows XP and earlier.

Thanks for the reply but the link you sent was dead. Also, I've followed instructions in several places for locating it in Win7. I can GET to the correct location but the key isn't there. If the only option is to add a key, I am asking for specific instructions to do so because I don't know how and don't want to mess up anything in the process. See Here...Thanks, patio, but that's not it either. I've already changed the computer name but that is different, and in a different location, than the registered owner. I'm wondering if the former owner deleted the keys thinking that was necessary. His name still shows up as the registered owner but there is no place in the registry to change it. I'm pretty sure I need to find out how to add in a new key that will allow me to change the registered owner from the former owner to me. Does anyone know how to do that?Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 02, 2013, 04:24:52 PM

If the keys are missing, you have to add them.

These both worked for me (same location in registry). I changed the organization as a test and didn't even need a reboot.

newsong: Are you looking in the right-hand pane for RegisteredOrganization and RegisteredOwner after clicking on the CurrentVersion key on the left-hand pane?

If they're definitely not there, you can right-click (in right-hand pane) -> New -> String Value to create them (but if his name shows up I'm pretty sure they're in there already and you just didn't see them)I'm puzzled...if the original Owner removed them they wouldn't be there...registry or not...
Perhaps these names are associated with certain apps...in that case you have to tackle each app and make the neccessary changes...

That being said my general rule of thumb is when inheriting any used PC the 1st step should be a wipe and a Clean Install...

Solve : Windows Vista Registry?

Answer»

Can anyone help me plz? Every time I turn on my computer, this window pops up and it says something about the registry and that this should be removed from the registry: C:\Users\ACAMP\LOCALS~1\Temp\msovyto.bat

Could anyone explain to me what this is, and how to get rid of it without screwing up my computer? I'm SOO sick of this thing popping up EVERY TIME i get on the computer. It's truly annoying. Also, can someone explain to me what "special permissions" is? On my computer, I'M the administrator, and I gave myself full control of the registry, yet it doesn't ALLOW me to write or delete anything in it. Why is this, and how do I CHANGE it?! HELP!!!!!

Download and run Sysinternals Autoruns and look for that file in the list...

If it says file not found (likely) then right-click the entry and select delete.

Temporary files that can be executed (such as those ending in .bat) are sometimes indicators of an infection. Run scans with your virus scanner, and if anything is found GO to to the virus forum on this site and make a post there.

EDIT: fixed linkhttp://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20121224210705AAjWlG7

I see you have 2 forums working on this for you ... never seen the batch file that is likely malicious before and your other forum post as linked above was only google hit. Can you open the batch file by selecting edit and copy/paste its contents here so everyone can see its script intent in plain text to see what it WANTS to do? ((Please do not attach this as a downloadable object and only copy/paste the batch files plain text instructions of the msovyto.bat file ))

This post may be moved to malware if the batch is found to be bad. Which i have a feeling it may be.

Solve : Changing Program Files folder to other drive?

Answer»

I recently built my computer (today, actually) with a SSD for the main boot drive and a 2TB HDD for my storage. I've managed to change the profiles' folder to the storage drive, but I've been reading that you can't move the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders without causing issues with Windows Update, .NET framework and Visual Studio, and other miscellaneous issues. However, I read that if you put some kind of link (symbolic, hard, not 100% sure) in the place of the original folder and pointed it to the HDD it would work. I've never used links before, other than the standard shortcuts, so can anyone help me out? With Win7 and later (possibly vista) you can use the mklink command to create hard links, symbolic links, and directory junctions. You'll almost certainly run into issues though (especially if an issue with a drive makes files inaccessible in some way); it's almost safer to just INSTALL programs to the second drive manually.I'd test this out on a small scale first with one program that will need updates after install, such as a game maybe that requires PATCHES to play online etc. *However I know for a fact that a game like World of Warcraft will work no matter where its moved to and update from any location since the updater is coded as such to update from its execution location and not an explicit path to only C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\ as is the default install location, other programs I dont believe are this flexible in how updates are performed. One game that I definately know is explicitly pathed in both execution and updates is AION. I chose to install this game to an alternate path to my SSD since I like to run games through my SSD for fast load times of 15GB to 30GB etc, and AION if told during installation to install to an alternate path will install to 3 locations ( Registry Keys with explicit pointers to C:\Program Files\NCSoft\AION\ , C:\Program Files\NCSoft\AION\ for a portion of the game contents, as well as my X: drive which is my SSD at X:\AION which has about another 50% of the game installed to it. ) *This game clearly was never designed to be installed to anything other than the default location of C:\Program Files\NCSoft\AION\ given that installing to an alternate path splits it in half like this.

* I have not tested this myself by adding links. My assumption is that a symbolic link will work for local user navigation, but updates etc that may be explicit pointing directly to C:\program files\Expected_Software_Location\Expected_Software_Subdirectory will not work.

* In the past I have edited my registry after moving software to alternate drives for the path to be D:\What_Ever_The_NEW_Path_IS vs its default C:\Program Files\... and this has worked for software not requiring frequent updates such as Microsoft Office etc and Adobe Graphic Arts packages etc. So if you are good with registry editing, you could change the path to the new location and this works most of the time.

With my setup and my 500GB HDD and 90GB SSD, I ended up switching to the final configuration of:

C: = Windows 7 Installation, 99% of programs installed, Important Data ( on my 500GB SATA II HDD)

X: = Large Game Packages that benefit from fast Read/Write data access such as World of Warcraft etc, (on my 90GB OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III SSD running backwards compatability mode as SATA II because my 2009 motherboard can only run at SATA II, and it doesnt have an available PCIe slot to upgrade to a degraded 5Gb/s SATA III connection, when SATA III is normally 6Gb/s on motherboards that come with it integrated.)

Note: I also redirected my swap space from its default of C: to X: to increase the speed of the computer tapping into the SSD's speed. *This made noticable difference on 4GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM with 6GB swap space on the SSD vs the HDD.

Pretty much I came to the conclusion that once Windows is booted the OS doesnt benefit much more from the SSD, so I DECIDED to install my OS to the HDD and keep about 33% of this SSD free for games etc, and just move the swap space to the SSD which is where the OS benefits most with the SSD once the OS is already loaded and running. Load time of Windows 7 isnt that bad anyways using HDD and using SSD only made it boot to Windows about 50% faster. If this was a laptop that was turned on and off a lot in which boot times would add up throughout the day, I would probably reconsider my current setup, but given that this is a gaming tower booted once a day and on for long periods of time, the games and swap space benefit more from the fast Read/Write SPEEDS off the SSD, and I maximize my space available for games and hard drive hungry programs that constantly reference file content and run into the swap space when memory hungry.

Quote

it's almost safer to just install programs to the second drive manually.
I agree with Technogeeks statement, I also dont believe you will be able to relocate the entirety of Program Files to an alternate drive without some complications arrising from this.So instead of having Win7 installed on the SSD and having most of my storage on the HDD, I should install it on the HDD then put games and such onto the SSD? Hmm, that should work. But you're right about the boot speed, I thought it would be faster than that.

Solve : Cloning Hard Drive to a partition?

Answer»

Hi!

This Christmas, I added a 2TB HARD Drive to the 1TB drive already in my computer (as well as some RAM, but that is UNIMPORTANT).
I wanted to reinstall Windows onto the old 1TB Drive, but keep an IMAGE of the new drive that could be booted until I was sure that all data was copied across.

I installed Disk 2 (names for simplicity's sake) and set it up with the ACRONIS software the drive told me to use (on the label on the physical drive) . I CREATED two partitions, one 900GB big and the other occupied the remaining 963GB. However, each of the cloning utilities I tried to use would not allow me to clone Disk 1 onto a partition on Disk 2 - they both only showed Disk 2, not the partitions.

I have tried Acronis and EaseUS software, but both seem to have the same behavior.

Any help would be much appreciated.
JamesI suggest you allow Disk 2 to be treated as single, un-partitioned, drive to do the cloning of Disk 1 to Disk 2. Then, you use Windows 7's Disk Management utility or a third party disk management tool such as EaseUS Partition Master to partition the drive. You can do this with Windows 7's Disk Management utility; reference: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/resize-a-partition-for-free-in-windows-vista/You cannot use any cloning app to clone to a partition/HDD smaller than the subject drive...
This is probably why it's balking...
Either set a larger target partition on the new HDD or take soybeans advice above...
It can always be re-sized later...Thankyou both for your advise.

I'll go and do it!

Solve : dropouts with buffering? (Win7, Chrome, IE, Firefox)?

Answer»

Using any of the above browsers when I am listening to a variety of radio stations, primarily talk radio, the sound will SIMPLY cut out at random times for a random AMOUNT of TIME and will then start again – however not buffered as the "lost time" will not be the continuation of where it cut off. I simply lose chunks of the conversation. I have TRIED this in safe mode and the same thing happens. I have tried this when absolutely NOTHING else was running (except for Microsoft services) and the same thing happens.

Any idea of what is happening and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Ross
You could try clearing your browsers cache before each session of listening to the radio. Also clearing your cookies may help.

The reason I say this is that YouTube has the same issues with random buffering

Let us know how you get on. Well, clearing for Chrome (my standard audio listener) and Firefox (my default browser) has worked all day. Thanks.....so far!

Solve : Shutting down when closed?

Answer»

Hi there,

My computer has been acting up lately for a reason I can't figure out. When I close my laptop it USUALLY goes to sleep and when I open it I have to push the power key to get it back going. For the past week or so about half the time I reopen my computer I find that it had shut off while closed. The power button starts the computer and brings me to the "Your computer did not shut down properly" screen. After it finally boots up an error message pops up saying "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown." When I press "View Problem Detail" this is what shows up. Problem signature:
Problem Event Name:BlueScreen
OS Version:6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID:1033

Along with this problem Google Chrome has been RIDICULOUSLY slow. I can just barely scroll through a page it's so slow. Internet Explorer is faster but STILL isn't up to par. I'm guessing these problems all relate. I run the latest version of Kaspersky Antivirus and have had this on my comp for almost a year now. I'm positive it's not a virus and most likely a software issue but have no idea where to start looking. Could you please help me find out what the problem is? If you need any extra info feel free to ask. Thank you very much!

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1
Version6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
ASUSTeK: System Model N75SF
ProcessorIntel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz, 2195 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter
GeForce GT 555M
Display adapter type Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000
RAM 8GB

I'd look around in Power Management Setting. If all looks correct, change it to another configuraton such as how many minutes before screen goes black etc, and then reboot, then change it to the configuration you want and reboot and see if that works. This will force writing of the correct power management settings to the registry. There should be an option under power management to have it hibernate when lid is closed, which should already be selected.

Other than that you could always backup your data to an external drive and then rebuild your laptop from the system restore DVD's or chose a earlier restore point and see if the system BEHAVES when lid is closed after reverting to an earlier point in time of system state.

*The only time I have seen a hibernation crash was when a hard drive is just about completely full and so Windows is unable to write from RAM the system state to hard drive, and so it crashes due to not enough free space to send the image to. How much free space do you have on your hard drive? That makes a lot of sense. So I changed my power options to shut the computer doff when the lid closes, closed the lid (shutting it down), then switched it back to the Sleep setting when the lid is closed and restarted it. Hopefully this FIXES the problem. Makes sense how you explained it. I also UNINSTALLED then reinstalled Chrome and it seems to be working like it should be.

I've got four hard drives at around 250GB a piece but the one with the OS on it is only half full. The other three are even less full. Hopefully this was a quick and easy fix. If problems reoccur I'll be back. Thanks a bunch for all the help!

I have the a toshiba L300 laptop, it all started when it would STOP on a black screen with the curser on only, a friend told me to load another operating system onto the Vista, when I try to load the Xp disc on start up, it would not load, I went through the bios to load the CD first, it would not load, then all of a sudden, the laptop started up on its ORIGINAL vista programme and it let me do around 120 Microsoft updates, it was ok last night, then switched it on this morning to find I can only get the blue screen with an error message, my problem now is I cannot get by this stage, every TIME I switch it BACK on, I only have this blue screen, I have taken a photo of this error message but your site das it is to large to send to this reply, look forward to your thoughts on the above, AllanAll issues i suspect you are having have to do with switching the OS back and forth a few times...
Each time an OS is installed / re-installed the proper drivers ...especially for laptops need to be re-installed as well.
With laptops the manuf. site is the ONLY place you should go for them if you do not have the original Driver CD ....
MBoard Chipset drivers go 1st...then re-boot ...then install all others.I am still on the old Vista, the laptop would not let me download the XP

Solve : Any one have a Sony Vaio Recovery disk set, VPCS40FX they may want to part with??

Answer»

I may get in trouble, I don't KNOW if its allowed to ASK for help like this.

I am looking for a Sony "VPCS40FX SERIES RECOVERY MEDIA KIT" Bought a used Vaio laptop, Windows 7 Home premium/64 bit. Previous Owner bought it new in Feb 2012. After a hard drive failure, 5-6 months down the road, the laptop was repaired at the place of purchase, a "WELL known chain store". It just seems to run hinky, as one used to say on here. Lots of hang ups, and sometimes it literally stops working, while browsing. Have to re-fresh over and over, might come back and might not.

The PO was told the Sony disks had to be purchased as it was out of warranty. Allegedly there was a time frame they would have supplied them for free for the HD failure. And Sony is quite proud of them it appears. The PC has the "Stores" own crap tagged in with some desktop icons, and wireless connection setup, etc. It has had the recovery partition re-installed, but it just seem quite right EITHER.

So was just looking to START from square one with the correct software. Feel free to PM me.

thanksAs long as you have the Windows 7 Home Premium Key on the computer itself you can use any Windows 7 Home Premium disk and legally install it clean on that computer using that same key. I always reinstall Windows even on new computers using a retail or tech net disk (or a wim image) and I use the OEM key from the computer and it works fine and allows you to start without all the 3rd party bloat ware that slows down your computer.

So you don't need that "Sony" disk, you just need a Windows 7 Home premium/64 bit diskYou will also have to download all the drivers for your particular model of Sony Vaio.Quote from: mathis.ws on December 07, 2012, 12:31:45 AM

Solve : Load XP video driver in Vista?

Answer»

Hi,
I run dos software which runs ok under XP.
If I run this software under Vista it will not run full screen.
In Vista I inadvertantly deleted the video driver and loaded a basic one.
Now my stuff runs full screen but will not clear the screen before it paints the next one.
My program can send a up to 8 characters to clear the screen. Any idea what those characters are?
Can I load an XP video driver?

CLS will clear screen in DOS from DOS command line, but I doubt it will work within the program this way. You can give it a try and see what happens. Worst that can happen is it to respond with invalid function etc. Whats the program called if it is not a custom program, but one that was sold as a package?

Have you tried using XP compatability mode in Vista to have this program run under reverse compatability?

Also there is a setting in Vista to where you can launch command prompt via CMD and when the window pops up, right-click on the TOP of the dos shell window frame and select properties and then select Full Screen under display options, and then you can then select Save Properties for Future Windows with the same title. If the program is launched from command prompt by going to CMD first, the title will start off as the same in full screen and your program should remain in full screen. ( *I haven't worked with Vista in a while, but this should be the method )
Hi,
My program was written in 1986. It sends 1A hex to dos to clear the screen. it can send any 8 char sequense.
What is cls in hex?
Compatability mode only goes back to win 95
Dont have the old driver now but the command prompt said similar to 'cannot use fullscreen mode for this 16 bit subsystem'
Thanks for your interest
GeofflQuote from: geoffl on December 04, 2012, 03:19:45 AM
It sends 1A hex to dos to clear the screen.

1A doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Best I can guess is it's either a DOS interrupt call (1A is "Set disk transfer address", which obviously has nothing to do with video), or, it COULD be interrupt 10, which, which Register AH set to 1A, can either get or set VGA video colour information. Setting VGA mode in a DOS application in Vista and later does not work for 16-bit applications. Thus the error message. Older Video drivers would not fix this issue, since it's not a Video Driver problem.

If you are running applications that old, you ought to be running them directly on a DOS machine or in a Virtualized Environment (beyond that given by windows itself)Thank you for your help
GeofflDoes that mean it's solved ? ?
Hi,
I would still like to know if I can load an XP video driver in Vista so I can use full screen.

GeofflJust SAW that this might still be open...

But you can try reverse compatability mode like I did below on a old system to run XP drivers for 7.

I recently tested a motherboard with an Intel 845 GL chipset with Windows 7 and Intel has no support past Windows XP for my chipset with integrated graphics. I was able to use my XP driver from Intel only by telling Windows 7 to run this driver installer which was an EXE as XP SP3 compatability mode and also select the checkbox to runas administrator. While there are differences between Vista and 7 and you might have a totally different chipset or GPU, its worth a try.

My issue with Windows 7 and this motherboard from 2002 running a Trigem Imperial motherboard out of an old eMachine, (originally socket 478 Celeron 2Ghz upgraded 4 years ago to Pentium 4 2Ghz) was that it would only run 640x480 RESOLUTION with generic microsoft drivers with my Intel 845 GL chipset. If I went to a higher resolution such as 800x600 or 1024x768 it would drop to 256 colors. By forcing the installation in reverse compatability mode I was able to get 1024x768 with better than 256 colors.

If this wasnt going to work out for me, I was going to install a GeForce 4 video card into a PCI slot since I am pretty sure that nVidia has legacy drivers that support 7. But this was also just a test to see if this 10 year old computer could run Windows 7 32-bit and to see how well or unwell it ran it.

At some point I want to test Windows 8 on this system, but to do that I will have to remember where I put my Windows 8 beta disc and once I find it, if it will run like Windows 7 does for a short period of time without activation right away or not. Windows 7 32-bit allowed 3 days of use before having to activate the key.

A.V. AVG 2012

I recently and it appears foolishly downloaded a "Registry cleaner". When I ran it there was nearly 2500 items deleted. Since that time my computer will not shut down.
I tried a system restore using a point before the cleaner was installed but I got the error message:
System restore failed to replace the file (c:\windows) with its ORIGINAL copy from the restore point.
An unspecified error occured during system restore. (0x80071a90).

I have tried all system restore point previous the the installation of the cleaner but all give the same results.

I have considered using the 3 installation discs that I have to SEE if that would correct the problem but am now wondering if that would not just do a complete re-install.

Can someone PLEASE advise me

Glenafton
What was the registry cleaner? Did the cleaner backup the registry before it cleaned it?
I personally don't recommend registry cleaners to anyone. Unless it BACKS up the registry, or you do it before you run it. Usually registry cleaners cause more problems.

Do you mean the desktop? SORRY I'm asking it's just a bit unclear what your SAYING. If my assumption is correct, try pressing CTRL+alt+esc. Task manager should open. click on new task and type explorer.exe. if the desktop doesn't open instead an explorer window opens, you might want to run a virus scan.

Solve : Windows 7 Error?

I keep on randomly recieving this. On startup it takes me to a black screen telling me that Windows failed to start because of a recent hardware CHANGE. I boot normally and everything works fine. suggests that a system component accessed memory it shouldn't have (possibly because of corruption)

Solutions it suggests:

  • Download and install updates and device drivers for your computer from Windows Update.
  • Scan your computer for computer viruses.
  • Check your HARD disk for errors.
Have you done any of these?

it should give you a list of commands
The last Windows OS to be built on a DOS kernel was Windows 98.I just used both edit and copy in the Command Prompt window in my Windows 7 system and they worked. Perhaps you need to REVIEW the syntax for your DOS commands.

Solve : Incredibly Long Boot Times and Freezing on Lenovo Laptop?

Answer»

Hi all,

I bought a Lenovo G555 laptop in new condition that came with Windows 7, and it can't be more than two years old. For quite some time, it's had several annoying problems. Most notably, it occasionally completely freezes; this can occur while using it, or when opening the lid after it has not been in use. The second issue is that the time it takes to boot up is no less than 20 to 30 minutes. This occurs whether the computer is restarted or booted up after being off.

Here are the REMEDIES I have already tried:

-Restoring to factory condition (several times)
-Daily antivirus scans (full scans once a week) with the most up to date virus definitions (I use avast! and nothing is detected)
-Full Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scans with the most up to date definitions (no malware found)

I do not have an extreme amount of software installed, as I think I'm pretty careful about what I install on my PCs.

On top of this, beginning today, Windows is now reporting there is a problem with the battery and it needs to be replaced, but the problems described above began long before this happened.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but this PC is nearly always plugged in, as we only unplug it to take it elsewhere on fairly rare occasions.

Your help would greatly be appreciated. At what point does the boot process slow down?QUOTE from: Allan on December 27, 2012, 05:03:48 AM

At what point does the boot process slow down?

It's immediately after the POST screen, but before Windows 7 attempts to load. However, here's an update:

Since I have a Western Digital hard drive, I booted to DOS using the Hirens CD boot disc and ran their WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Utility. The QUICK scan indicated a problem (error/status code: 0007 - "Read Element Failure") and indicated doing an extended scan will attempt to fix the problem. I let it continue, and it indicated it fixed the issue. I restarted and right away I received a "BOOTMGR image is corrupt" error that prevented me from booting to Windows 7. I did some additional research and saw some suggestions that booting to the System Recovery Options screen (from the Windows 7 Recovery Disc) and selecting Startup Repair may fix the issue. I did this, and it attempted to reboot one unsuccessfully; it tried a second time and was able to load Windows.

I thought I was out of the woods, but immediately, I noticed some odd THINGS. Every time Windows loads, I receive messages that some indicate problems with my Desktop Manager, audio (though the sound still worked), and network card (unlike the audio, I did not have connectivity). I was able to fix the network card issue by removing the drivers, rebooting and letting Windows find and reinstall the appropriate drivers, but the other two message persist each time I boot. Additionally, there is another extremely strange issue I've noticed that did not occur prior to running the hard drive diagnostic utility: each time I use Firefox (updated to the latest version) and go Gmail or use the Google search bar feature that is part of Firefox, Firefox immediately crashes before even loading Gmail or the search results. It's bizarre to say the least, and I've not noticed any other sites I've visited that crash Firefox, but going to either of those places crash it each time.

I haven't had a chance to see what, if anything, else may be wrong, but I find it very odd that running a hard drive diagnostic utility and letting it (supposedly) fix the problem would result in this behavior. However, it now appears I have an even bigger issue, as once I took it out of Hibernate MODE this morning, it's been sitting at the "Welcome" screen for the past five to ten minutes; this also happened last night during a reboot, but does not happen every time, as I have been able to successfully load Windows a few times. What are my next options?

Thanks again for everyone's help.right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.Quote from: Allan on December 27, 2012, 06:05:14 AM

Allan, I followed your suggestion and let chkdsk run for about 45 minutes; it appeared to fix all detected issues. However, when I boot to Windows, I still have the same problems and then some - now, Malwarebytes crashes upon loading and Firefox is crashing nearly across the board. Is it even worth trying to restore this laptop to factory condition and giving it a try or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

Thanks again for your help.I can't imagine you need a new laptop. You may need a new hd, there's no way I can know from here. One thing you can do is download the WD diagnostic utility from their website and run a full check on the hd. You can also check the ram (see below). In the end sure, try a factory reset - what do you have to lose? A new laptop would be my VERY last choice.

To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility. An extended WD Diagnostic Utility test yielded no errors this time. I just started running the RAM test and will let you know the results.

I let memtest86+ run for four passes and did not encounter any errors. At this point, I'm going to attempt to restore to factory condition and hope that solves the problem (aside from the battery, of course).

Solve : weird notice when I boot up.?

Answer»

Hello,
It's been a very long time since I've been here. Thanks for being here!
Lately, every time I boot up, I get a box on my screen that says:

Desktop
Could not load or run 'C:\Users\ my name\LOCALS~1\Temp\msqycoa.com' specified in the registry.
Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

When I try to follow the address, I get to, C\users\my name\, but LOCALS~1 doesn't seem to exist.
I tried looking in the registry for it by doing the regedit THING and I don't see anything related, but maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at?
I'm running Vista Home edition.
any ideas?
TIALOCALS~1 is an MS-DOS style/short/8-dot-3 file name for Local Settings, a hidden folder in your user directory. In windows vista/7, it's an oddly-behaving pointer to a different location where some of your user data is stored. Given its name and location, it seems like it could be either part of an installer for a program or a virus. You can use sysinternals autoruns or another startup manager to find and remove the startup entry for it to stop the message from appearing every time you log on.

sysinternals autoruns here (use the file Autoruns.exe in the zip file):
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

You should run a virus scan as well in case something malicious got on your computer.
I loaded the auto run thing but I'm not sure about what what to do with it.
There is a line (yellow) with the description I'm looking for.
I tried to delete it, but it won't let me.
??Are you running as administrator? Make sure you are. If you can't delete it, can you at least uncheck it?I right click and say run as administrator.
When I uncheck it, I get, Error changing item state, access denied.
If I try to delete it I get, Error deleting start setting, access denied. What is the full path of the item (e.g. HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, shows up above the section) and the name of the item? You may need to reset your permissions for that key through the registry. This is what I see:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Load
and under that:
C:\Users\jim\LOCALS~1\Temp\msqycoa.comFile not found: C:\Users\jim\LOCALS~1\Temp\msqycoa.com
Edit:
I disabled the User Account Control.
opened the registry and found it.
The only thing that will HIGHLIGHT is "load"
If I right click and select delete, I get a warning. If I ignore the warning and select delete, I get:
Unable to delete all specified values.
Edit again:
I RAN Superantispyware, and AVG antivirus scans, and both came up clean.

Right-click on they key "Load" and click permissions. Click Add... and type in your login name for windows. check the 'full control' box. now try to delete the thing on the right that says msqycoa.com and post back if you get errors. If you get success post anyway so we know I WENT in and tried again.
When I right click on Load, a box opens up. Options in the box are:

MODIFY
Modify Binary Data
Delete
Rename

There is no option for permissions.
I am the only user on this machine and it's an administrator account.
hmmmm? The 'Permissions' option is on the key (folder ICON) not the value (what you click on). Do the same thing I suggested before (adding self with full control). Before you delete the entry, right-click the key (folder icon again) and click EXPORT, and save the file as a backup. If something goes wrong you can run this backup file to restore your change.I'm sorry,
I'm not very computer literate I guess, but I'm learning!
Got it, I'll try tonight.Thank you,
It worked perfectly!

Solve : Can I download I-Tunes for free on my computer??

Answer»

The question I have is that can I download I-Tunes for free on my computer? If I am able to download I-Tunes for free on my computer, can I download music, sports etc. for free? I'm not trying to be naive but I thought I saw on I-Tunes that some of the DOWNLOADED music, sports videos, etc. were for free.

I'm sorry if I'm rambling but I'll try to some it up LIKE this. Is there anything on I-Tunes thats free or do I have to pay to get I-Tunes and pay to download music, sports videos etc.?iTunes is free to download and use. It can be free to take your already existing CD's and make MP3's out of them. Anything thru the web through iTunes usually comes at a cost unless its advertised as free, but no hidden fees. You have to go through a TRANSACTION in ORDER to buy sonds for 99 cents per song etc if going through that offer.Thank you for responding. I'm not technically sound when it comes to computers, electronics etc. So, what your saying I can download I-Tunes for free but the majority of the stuff I would have to pay for?Pretty much:

- If you want to download music or other content then its probably going to require payment for them. ( acquiring new content will come at a cost )

- If you just want to convert your CD collection to MP3 and have it all organized, create play lists, or random play etc its free to do that. ( using existing content is free )

Solve : Record a .exe file??

Answer»

Is there a way to "Record" a .exe file? So I can see what files it extract and change.

If you wonder why I want that, it's because I'm trying to make a program portable on my USB so I don't have to install it to the hard drive every time I want to use it.

There are a number of free portability wrappers out there that allow you to make software that normally has to be installed to C:\.... with registry hooks etc portable for single exe execution. I like Cameyo which was presented on a Hak5 episode a while back.

http://www.guidingtech.com/5493/portable-apps-virtualization-cameyo/

Depending on whatever you need to make portable you might need a larger size USB thumb drive as for all dependencies are replicated to the thumb drive so that it can run as a portable app.

I tested this out on Open Office and it was like 560MB in size with all dependencies self contained.

This might save you from reinventing the wheel I can take a look at it, it seems quite good, and a 32GB USB doesn't cost that much. I can't try it until I get home, but can you also see all the files that the program change? It isn't necessary now, but might be good if I find a file that looks strange. What App are you trying to reverse engineer ? ?It's an older version of Skype.

Edit: My antivirus didn't like the file that much, but VirusTotal GAVE few hits, so I guess my antivirus is to paranoid. Cameyo didn't work, I "recorded" the install on my D:\ drive, and now I must run the application on a D:\ drive to get it to work. I'm trying to see if I can by pass that, but so far no luck.

Edit:
Well that's my guess, I just keep getting an "Unknown Drive" error. You guys should increase the time for editing post.

Anyway I THOUGHT it might be something on my computer that did block or corrupt something. So I thing ongoing on my secondary computer, it's Win xp with basic of basic stuff. And on that computer it wouldn't even start.

And it doesn't help that somehow I GOT a Windows update notification and told me that I needed to restart my computer (I got the choice for when to restart aka 4 hours). But I clearly told it last time that only tell me when update are ready to download, I even went to the policy to disable things there. It worked FINE until today.

And now I can't "Eject Mass Storage Device". I can press it and lose access to the USB, but the USB is till on and have connection to the computer.

Solve : Bios update gone wrong?

Answer»

I bought a new dv7t quad edition HP laptop recently. I moved the 750gb 7200rpm hard drive to the secondary slot and was using a Crucial 256gb solid state drive as the boot drive. The HP HELP center told me that I needed a BIOS update, so I let it do its thing, and soon I had a laptop that would show nothing but a blank screen. I CALLED HP and they said it was the hard drive, so I switched them and I have a working computer again. However, I need to be able to switch back to the solid state drive.

How do I get rid of whatever the BIOS update did to the hard drive?
If you need me to post more info about the laptop, I can.
Thank you for your time.I made the leap forward to SSD with 2 laptops and 1 desktop. I had to PREP my one OCZ Agility 90GB prior to OS installation, but my system would boot up past the post diagnostics with just an error of No OS Found. The Toshiba System Restore utility would boot and come up with No Hard Drives Detected as for it was having a hard time finding the SSD and only option was to exit the system restore.

So your not getting a successful post ( HP Logo or detailed boot stats )?

I'd perform the flash to the BIOS with the original hard drive installed. If the BIOS is already at the version you are trying to flash it to, it wont hurt the computer and it will probably show a screen that shows existing BIOS Flash Version and the Flash version to be applied. If they both match you can exit the flash process as for you are already at the latest version.

*The prep that I had to perform to my SSD was that I had to connect it through a SATA to USB cable and make it act as an external hard drive. I then created a NTFS PARTITION on it and then formatted it using Windows 7, which my Laptops OS is, and then I was then able to install the SSD to my laptop, and then boot off of my USB stick to install the OS to the SSD using the Toshiba System Restore Utility that I made before yanking the original hard drive. The restore utility now was able to find the SSD and install properly. This installation process deletes the partition I made when prepping the drive as for Windows 7 wants its default structure of partitioning.

I then was all set with a HEALTHY running Toshiba off of the 90GB SSD. Super Fast Boot, and Fast application loads, and longer battery life, but limited to like 72GB Free space after OS and all bundled programs installed to it.So, I tried to do what you said but whenever I tried to format the new partition, it was saying that I didn't have enough space... I kept on lower the space I wanted to use but it still wouldn't work. But I decided to mess around with it. I just went to properties on the hard drive that was failing to boot, went to the tools tab and clicked on the check for errors option. It said it found a few. So I shut my computer down, switched the hard drives around again, rebooted, and presto, it works again.
Thank you for your help though. I'm probably never going to be brave enough to update my BIOS again though, lol.

I have tried a System Restore. No Dice.

Win 7 Home premium. 64 bit, SP1.

I have done a quick CC check with no bad results. Also full Malwarebytes check also yesterday. No problem
Any suggestions gratefully RECEIVED, with the proviso........I am an octogenarian with
basic knowledge only and still learning.
Thanks people.
H Try downloading/install BROWSER Opera and see if the problem is there also. If you have not installed the most current versions of I.E./Firefox you could try that also.truenorthThank you for your reply.
I had a brain snap, dug out an old mouse and hey presto (fingers crossed) the problem appears to be solved. (Although the old mouse has no scrolling wheel and I keep reaching for something that isnt there. )
Thanks again.
HIt may be of use to someone.
I dismantled the offending scrolling OPTICAL mouse. I dont know if it had any bearing, but I found a HAIR in line with the optic window. Removed it, put it back TOGETHER and hy presto. It may have only been co incidence, but it worked. Used to be a required part of mouse maintenance to remove the ball and clean the area--it was amazing the crud that could accrue, truenorth
P.S. While obviously not required to solve your issue i reiterate give Opera a try. It has many nice features.

Solve : Starting up issues?

woke up this morning, went downstairs to the desktop and noticed the mouse was not moving. No biggie. I force reset the computer by holding down the power button. I can hear the computer boot back up but I get nothing on the screen. Not even the BIOS shows up. Nothing. Thinking it could be the updated video card, I take it out and TRY booting up from the MOTHERBOARD video card. Nothing. Now I am usually the person people come to for computer help, but I am stumped on this one. I have had this computer not even 3 WEEKS now. I bought it off a friend, formatted the hard drive and put a fresh install of Windows 7 on it. I was so impressed with how fast it was. But now I am getting nothing out of it. Anybody have any help? Suggestions?

Solve : Computer Black (or blue or white) screens when starting up?

Answer»

Recently I put in a new GRAPHICS card for my computer (Radeon HD 7770) but now my computer wont start up. It loads up completely but about 3 minutes after boot, the screen goes blank. It seems to go the colour that the screen was mostly made up of when it turned of. I have no mouse and if I am listening to ANYTHING as the computer turns off, it hums in the pitch that the sound is. I then have to turn the computer off by holding the power button. The computer works when I put it in safe mode though. Im just wondering if any of you guys have any idea what could be wrong with my computer and maybe help me

Specs:

Windows 7 32 Bit
Service Pack 1
No idea what computer it is because i bought it at ALDI and it doesnt say
3Gb Ram
AMD Athlon 2 X4 620 Processor
1TB HARD Drive
Radeon HD 7770 Graphics CardDid you remember to install the vid card drivers ? ?
As Patio said, did you install the driver?

Did you also attach a power cable to the video card? (see picture below)

Is the fan on the card working?

KEEP in mind it is entirely possible that the card is just faulty. If possible, try it in another computer.Yes, I did install the driver, I attached the power cable and the fan is working.

I managed to get the computer to turn on but now I cant really turn it off :/
It turns on when waking up from sleep mode so this could be a temporary solution. I'm thinking if I completely reinstalled windows it may work if the graphics card isn't faulty?

Solve : outlook not allowing download?

Answer»

I am using MS Office 2007 with MS Office Outlook 2007 on Win7 for 64 bit.
All of a sudden, Outlook will not allow me to download anything. When I view an e-mail and attempt to down load something in it (like a recipe). I get the following message:

“This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your System Administrator.”

This happens on all e-mails that I try to download from. I have not, knowingly, changed anything. I am the “system administrator”.
Any help or guidance you can render will be most appreciated.
Thanks, eddie460
What do you mean "download"? Do you mean you want to click on a link? Open an attachment? Something else?YES, I mean to click on a link.
eddie460http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310049You just need to make sure IE is set as your default Browser. GO to Control Panel - Internet Options - Programs TAB and set Internet Explorer as the default browser.I checked and it is already set for IE as the browser.

Solve : Original version vs. portable version?

Answer»

What's the difference between the ORIGINAL version of a program and the portable version?
The portable version can make the same things like the ''original'' version??? *sorry for my englishAs a rule, the difference is that the original version needs to be installed on a computer and the portable version does not, and can run from a usb drive. What program are we talking about?

And your English is finePortable version simply means it doesn't have to be installed to run properly...Portable versions are usually used on flash drives. You can connect the flash drive to any computer and run the program right from the flash drive; no need to install it in your OS. QUOTE from: patio on June 28, 2011, 07:37:06 PM

Solve : Cannot boot windows 7 in normal mode. Only able to use safe mode.?

Answer»

Hi,
My computer froze the other day. I happened periodically whenever I am on Yahoo! fantasy sports web page. I don't know what it is about that site but my computer for whatever reason does not like it.

So after freezing on that site, computer was unresponsive to anything I did. I shut it off, restarted, put in my password and then it froze while loading on the "welcome" screen for windows. I cannot get past this screen in normal mode ANYMORE and I am working on my old desktop right now as I try to figure out what is wrong.

LAST time I was having problems, not as bad as this mind you, I had to download a BIOS update from the manufacturer.

What other info do you need from me? Any thoughts as to how I can fix it?

I think my drivers are up to date, I checked the device manager and nothing says it needs to be updated.

Thanks

John Can you boot to safe mode?yes, i have it next to me in safe mode with networking, i am doing this stuff from my desktopLet's start with checkdisk.

To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /R (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.its in the process now. what should i expect? and do i need to record any of these numbers for you?You should expect 5 passes, each checking and, if necessary, repairing different areas after which it will try to reboot. Let's see what happens. It may take a while (especially the final pass). Let it finish.finally finished and it still froze on the start up.

Whats the next step?

Thanks for your help1) Look in device manager - any errors?

2) Let's try a clean boot. Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently DISABLE the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

3) Please do not send any more PM's.Hi,

Sorry about the pm. My bad, I thought that was a chat function as it said you were online.

I got it to boot in normal mode by going into msconfig, under the general tab, selecting selective start up (which was already selected?) and unchecking two items (load system services/load startup items). It would not let me uncheck load system services, however I did uncheck the load start up items feature. What does this mean?

ok, I looked under the services tab, and all the services with the exception of a few are in fact disabled. I have gone through them and isolated the service that was causing the problem. It was in fact a problem with my AVG antivirus.

Any suggestions for an alternative freeware antivirus program?

Cheers! If you are going to stay with a free AV the two best are Avira and Avast
