Solve : hidden characters?

Answer»

Hi, Im having trouble with some mp3 files that have HIDDEN characters (unicode according to 1 error message). If I COPY these files from my win7 home p 32 bit PC to an old xpsp3 pc and use the same file manager the hidden characters are immediately visible. I delete the characters (mainly squares) and copy back to win7 all is good. I believe I have the same settings for language and keyboard on both PCS, that is english australian language and us keyboard. Can anybody tell me how I can view these hidden characters in win 7 ??

I cant believe i will have to go backwards to xp to do this? Thanks in advanceThe files are corrupted...doesn't matter what OS you view them in.Quote from: PATIO on July 01, 2011, 05:46:37 PM

Solve : Long time at Starting Windows screen?

Answer» HI, I am having an issue with my computer when it starts up. It is much slower than it should be, when I turn it on it will GO through the startup screens fairly quickly, but when it gets to the screen that says Starting Windows, the computer stays there for about a minute and a half before it continues. then it goes to the welcome screen for about 15 seconds before getting to the desktop. When using the computer it is fine. Shutdown is quick. But I know that it should start up much faster.

This was my first computer that I built and I recently realized that I originally installed windows 7 with the HDD in IDE mode when it should have been in AHCI mode.
I did make a change about 2 weeks ago by going off of a forum that I found which told me how to change to ACHI mode without reinstalling. I changed one of the registry values (just one!) and rebooted, changed to AHCI and it has been working well until now. I don't think the change had anything to do with my problem because it has always started up slowly.

Thanks for any input!

System:

Processor: Intel Core i7-940 2.93 GHz
Graphics Card: XFX Radeon HD 5570 (X2 Crossfire)
Motherboard: Asus P6D58-E
RAM: 6 GB OCZ Gold 1600 MHz
PSU: 850W ABS Dark Beret
Hard Drive: WD CAVIAR Black 640GB 6.0 GB/s
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
Download this tool http://download.cnet.com/StartUp-Tool/3000-2105_4-10465585.html and uncheck user(USR) applications and hit apply. Reboot your PC.
I really don't see any problem. So your system takes a couple of minutes to boot. So do most systems. If that's the only issue I really wouldn't worry about it. But if you insist on looking into it you can do this:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still OCCUR? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not USE msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
Well for me it is very annoying because I built this computer with the notion that I was going to have everything about it be fast. That is why I spent a long time picking out a motherboard that would support a Sata 3 hard drive. I just started up my computer with all services and files set to load and it took 3:38 minutes (from time I press power button to time I can see the background. I used msconfig and disabled all services and startup files and rebooted in 2:57 min. While that may have been slightly faster, it is not satisfying, especially when considering that windows 7 was designed to startup/shutdown quickly. I just started my laptop in under 0:45 min. If I can't find anything I was thinking about reinstalling windows, but I will probably wait and buy a SSD (I am planning on doing this already because I can get decent discounts on them.)
TIf reinstalling the PC would revert the performance you are expecting out of the box, then I would go by it.

Sounds like a fault either in the graphics card or the driver. Presumably you've ALREADY tried:

- roll back of graphics driver
- system restore to a point prior to when this happened
- update of drivers to latest version

If none of those WORKS, it MIGHT be worth trying a different graphics card.

Would there be some kind of tests for my PC to diagonse the external hard drive? It was the same hard drive that I had in my PC. I had someone put in a 1TB.

It's a Windows sound as in finding drivers, but nothing is found. I just realized it's not when I connect my power cord. It's when I connect my USB cable.Take it to a repair shop or ask a friend who knows about computers to look at it for you.

I've frequently (to my wife's consternation) used kitchen knives or table knives in place of SCREWDRIVERS; they do in a pinch. But possibly if you're not the kind of person who has tools, you may also not be the kind of person to undertake this repair yourself?

One alternative is to plug in the external hard drive and boot from a live Linux distribution such as Parted Magic. If that doesn't detect it, basically nothing will; you can assume it's a hardware fault (in which case refer to Salmon TROUT's advice above).I think we might be getting somewhere? It was trying to find drivers, but failed. I will post a screenshot.

It says USB Flash Drive. I don't see it under My Computer, and I don't see a format option.Since you never used it before, the drive enclosure is probably no good.

Solve : How can I find out which of my files path names were too long??

Answer»

How can I find out which of my files path names were too long?

I'm backing up my files from one external drive to another (just dragged a giant folder over and waited over a day for it to paste the ENTIRE thing), now I come to read "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location with a shorter path." The destination folder saimply reads "CD2", which could literally be anything. What's the entire path?

I've got Windows 7.

So I'd GLADLY shorten whatever path(s) and try again, but how do I read entire path of which files were too long to be in which destination folder?

Don't know what to do, the window is still popped up that has the option of either "Skip" or "cancel" along which a check box at the bottom that reads "do this for all current items (11 found)", I haven't clicked anything yet. WHICH ELEVEN CURRENT ITEMS FOUND ARE TOO LONG??

I'm not very good with computers so feel FREE to treat me as a child. This reply is NOT going to be treating you as a child.I have done some research on your BEHALF and found the following "solution" (in it it does say "it worked"). However it certainly (no disrespect intended) may be difficult to do for you given your comment.

This was the 1st of thousands of responses to the query"how to change file path names were too long?" in a Google search. Given that the 1st responses stated within it "that it worked" by the person seeking the solution i did not go farther. You may wish to use the same search query and examine more of the results. truenorthSome more information may help. Is this 64 bit Windows 7

What is the destination drive?
a USB drive?
a Network drive?
a drive with a different file system, maybe FAT32?
Is the drive a product make expressly for backup and did the instructions indicate you should best use the provided software?

Also, drag and drop can fail for a large amount of files. This is not well documented, but in the MS KB there was such a thing with earlier versions of Windows.

Also, have you used this method of backup before and had good results? In some cases a hardware or network error brings up the wrong message.

Thee is nothing wrong with what you want to do. It is the hardware and software that has limitations.

Solve : Restoring Lap after setting it to factory settings...?

Answer»

Ok feel a little dumb right now, my lap top CRASHED the other night, I did a restore back to factory settings so now its lost all my data that I had on it but has it? Can I restore it back before it crashed on me and I set it back to factory settings? Any help advice would be appreciatedPlease tell us what you did to restore it to factory settings. Tell us such things as - did you press a key (which one?) at startup and choose something (what?) from a menu? Or did you use a manufacturer's rescue disk or disk set? Also a description of the crash might be useful.

I turned the laptop on and it turned it on ok at first, then in the bottom right hand corner the VOLUME control there was a cross over it. When hoovering the mouse over it, it said sound control not installed. So turned off and on again then it said installing windows files then said system failed to restart. It came up with a SCREEN to restore settings but only thing I could get it to do was factory restore. Its now lost all my data that was on there - stupid of me not to have a back up I know - im learning the hard way! But just wondered is any of it recoverable?Quote from: November10 on August 14, 2011, 04:12:34 AM

But just wondered is any of it recoverable?

Depends what you mean by "recoverable". The data is no longer accessible because the PARTITION that it was on has been overwritten. The ghost of some of it (so to speak) may exist on the disk and sometimes (rarely) it may be possible to recover some of the data by taking the hard disk out, mounting it in another computer and running a data recovery tool and waiting to see if it finds anything that can be salvaged. Another option would be to take the laptop to a data recovery company. This can be very expensive ($1,000 or more) and there is no guarantee of success. The chances of recovery GO down the more you use the system after the factory restore as well.

ok thanks. Looks like all is lost then.

It's kind of hard to explain but I will make it as simple as possible.

When I load any cd or game DISK - especially Sims 2, no dialog box comes up like it used to. (as it did use to come up)
A dialog box comes up when I'm uploading photos though, and it comes up with a box of several things I can do to load those photos
As I must have pushed a button of some sort as it won't do anything anymore.

Solve : gray box on screen with light gray arrows?

Answer»

this is a new build. i have 3 x asus monitors. all 3 monitors are working, but on monitor #3, there is a small rectangular dark gray box (sort of near the center of the screen) with two light gray arrows on the BOTTOM right of it. the box is not clickable or moveable.

system specs:

windows 7 pro 64bit
asus p8z68 deluxe mobo
crucial m4 128gb ssd
silverstone 1000w atx psu
g.skill ripjaws x series ddr3 1866 16gb
intel i5 2500k cpu
asus vw246h monitor x 3

what i've discovered so FAR:

if i change the order the monitors appear in windows, the dark gray box will always appear on monitor #3, so i don't THINK it's monitor-related. if i go into the monitor menu and select system setup, then splendid demo mode, and select on, the dark gray box TURNS light gray on the left side. this has been the only way i've found to interact with it.

here's a screen SHOT (i've cropped the image, but the box actually appears near the center of the screen and about 3 inches from the top of the screen):

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/1064/graybox.jpgLooks like some program is displaying this box - could be something that's auto-starting. AutoRuns is very handy for identifying (and selectively disabling) such programs.rob, thanks!

you nailed it. it turned out to be the asus suite (monitors cpu, temps, fans, etc.) i installed just after my first boot.

Solve : Changing my laptop hard drive?

what hard drive should i get?kennybartling,Welcome to the CH forums. I suggest that you give some thought as to whether a replacement internal HHD is what you want (with the associated need to delve into the interior of your laptop) or would an external USB connected HDD meet your needs. Externals happen to be a preferred route for me because of the versatility and mobility they offer. Then it becomes a question of the SIZE (capacity) you desire. In that regard they are available now to at least 3 TB and usually there is NOT a great deal of difference in price when you stay at or below the 1 TB capacity. After that manufacturers brand may enter into your decision (here you will find different opinions from CH forum members) with some preferring one brand over ANOTHER (often related to their own personal experiences). On a general note for your purchase HDD available from on-line STORES are usually less expensive than at bricks and mortar retailers. Also various HDD speeds may be available (internal and external) for your computer if that is important to you. In the final analysis it will be your decision based on availability and price in your area. There are also ratings available for HDD's which you can research via google. Large is great for oodles of space but can become more of a frustration if at some time you need to run a diagnostic test on the drive (the larger it is the LONGER it will take).truenorthQuote from: kennybartling on August 13, 2011, 08:58:42 AM

Solve : Setting File Permissions [Batch or Windows Scripting]?

Answer»

Hi there. I've compiled an .exe file that extracts the folder contents for my software to C:\Users\User\Documents\Recipes For Diabetics\ I choose Documents because it's easier then dealing with possible "Program Files" folder issues especially on Vista machines. (UAC and such)

The software itself is a simple database with recipes. I have bundled my "software folder" and turned it into an .exe file using a software called Inno Setup Compiler. ( I had placed a link before, but was "remanded" by the administrator of this forum for spamming.) But it can easily be found in Google.

My problem is that once the software is extracted to C:\Users\User\Documents\Recipes For Diabetics\ I can open it and navigate anywhere within the software but as soon as I try to Add or Delete a recipe, I get an error message that says "This File Cannot be Modified".

I know how to fix it manually by going to the folder and set Everyone as user and give Everyone Full Control. Another way that works is by turning "User Account Control" off and then reboot the machine.

But what I'd really like to do is set a script that runs after installation which automatically sets these permissions for me. Leaving things the way they are is very "client unfriendly."

Does anyone have any IDEAS? Is anyone familiar with Inno Setup Compiler?
Any takers? http://helpware.net/VistaCompat.htm

1)Right-click an EXE or its shortcut and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.
2)Mark the executable as requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" using a manifest file (see link above for a very easy way.)The product he USED to create his database installer is a package that works on Delphi files. Delphi is based on Pascal.

The package MENTIONED is "Inno Setup " and can be found on the download site of CNET.

It is FREE, so the moderator was, perhaps, overly cautious for removing the link. From the general deselection it appears to be a usable product. And the author seems to UNDERSTAND the setup requirements for Windows.

The OP may need to read over again the documentation:

But putting nan executable program in 'My Documents' is not a recommended practice. IMHO, this issue needs to be addressed first of all.Quote

Solve : Grey Screen On Startup?

Answer»

A couple of times in the last month my computer screen go's completely grey on start up. The last 2 day's it's every time. When this happens I have to hold the power button in to force shutdown and restart in safe mode. I then click on restart and it restarts properly. I have had 2 blue screen occurrences recently as well. May or may not be related. Everything seems to be working good but I know there's a PROBLEM SOMEWHERE. My guess is it's hardware related but I don't know enough to tell. Windows troubleshooter can't find any problems. The system isn't but a year or two old. Any idea's?

Windows 7 Home Premium
Service Pack 1
Dell Inspiron 546
AMD Atahlon II X2 215 Processor
4 GB RAM
ATI RADEON HD 3200 Graphics
160 GB Hd
Internet Explorer 91) At EXACTLY what point does the screen go grey?

2) Download BlueScreenView:
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply1 - When powered on computer flashes Dell screen. Then starting Windows screen. Next screen is completely grey. Normally this would be the log in page.

2 - I didn't have a BSOD.txt option so I saved as a text file. Hope that's ok.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Is anything plugged into a usb port?1) The only recent hw or sw change was adding a dsl line & modem but this was serveral weeks before any problems. Around the time of the first occurrence I was attempting to convert a photo in MS Paint. It froze up and I had to power down. I got the grey screen on restart but I'm not positive it was the first one. A little later I got the first blue screen and the computer seemed a little slower. While checking on the Paint freeze and error code (can't remember the code) at MS it said to use SFC to determine which file was causing the issue. I ran SFC and it said there was a file missing but it would not allow me to view the CBS log even under admin. to see what the problem was. Tried restoring to the week before but no change & it still woulden't view the CBS log. Downloaded and ran MalWareBytes and SuperAntiSpyWare. Downloaded Explorer 9 and service pack 1 from MS. Speed seemed back to normal so i left the computer on and pretty much forgot about it. Computer froze on the wife a few days ago and she had to power down. Grey screen every time since then. Restart works fine but if I shut down normally I have to do the safe mode and restart. Both blue screens happened within 5 minutes after a grey screen startup.

2) The mouse, keyboard, speakers, and printer are plugged in. Printer stays off unless I'm using it and it wasn't being used.Well that's a lot of information you didn't provide in the first post.

1) Am I to understand you can boot normally in safe mode?

2) Have you tried booting to the W7 dvd and running startup repair options?

3) Have you tried sfc /scannow again and does it still say there is a file missing?

4) Have you run a full system scan with your anti virus app?

5) Have you run checkdisk with the /r switch? If not, right-click on a command PROMPT icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot. Sorry, but I had forgotten about the paint incident. Also forgot to mention that I have MS Office 2007 installed but it's rarely used.

1) Command prompt to safe mode. Then I can restart normally while in safe mode.

2) No. I don't have a MS W7 dvd but I do have the Dell operating system dvd with W7 that came with the computer. Will it have a startup repair option? If so please explain how to proceed.

3) Tried sfc /scannow again and it says there are corrupt FILES. I was probably mistaken thinking it was missing files. Still can't view the cbs log.

4) Ran a full system scan. McAffee is up to date and didn't find anything.

5) Ran checkdisk. Didn't show any problems.I didn't suggest you run chkdsk. I suggested chkdsk /r as described in my post. Did you do that?

Please look in device manager - any yellow or red symbols?

I don't know what's on your Dell disk. If it's a full W7 dvd then boot to it and see if you can run the startup repair options. Make sure the optical drive is the first device in the bios boot device order.Yes, it was chkdsk /r - exactly as you suggested.

Checked device manager and there were no reds or yellow's.

By booting to the dvd to check for startup repair options do you mean for me to shut down with the dvd in the drive and restart?

http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/boot_from_cd/boot_from_cd.shtml

how to boot from a DVD/CD-the process is the same.Found startup repair by holding F8 key on boot. Ran it and it completed successfully. Reading the details it appeared it runs a simulated boot. If this is correct it can't find the problem because it always reboots successfully. The grey screen only happens when I start with the power button.

I finally found a way to save and view the sfc details and it shows several corrupt files. I can post it if needed.

My spouse does SEO work and has a partner who can manipulate her screen when ther trainning, this is why I wounder if im being hacked. Any IDEAS?Background save is something that Microsoft Word does when you are EDITING a LARGE document. When you save it, it does it in the background, so you can continue working in Word. You see a pulsating disk in the taskbar to let you KNOW this is happening.

Solve : Help -- mysterious desktop blurriness?

Answer»

Quote

Maybe it's just that I'm more the artistic perfectionist type and therefore very attentive to little details

Or possibly you just have better eyesight... I was performing the same zooming exercise as BC_P but he beat me to it... To me the effect is quite subtle when the image is viewed at 1:1 but when I zoom in I can see the effect clearly.

A solution I have seen for setting a PNG as desktop background giving visibly artifacted result relies on the fact that (apparently) Windows won't recompress the image if it's already JPG, so you could substitute your own hopefully milder compression settings for Windows default ones by saving the image as a JPG using settings (DEPENDING on your editor) LIKE quality: 100, and subsampling: 1x1, 1x1, 1x1. This may give a better result.

Quote
Windows won't recompress the image if it's already JPG

Just save the image as a bmp, then change the extension to jpg. Windows 7's desktop background engine will ignore the wrong extension and process the image WITHOUT compression. I just TRIED this.

Solve : Speaker problem??

Answer»

Hello

I am able to listen to YouTube, but not to hear sound on a DVD (I can see the film/movie, but no sound). I can't hear the radio either.

And advice would be GRATEFULLY received.

This is a NEW PC (tower) Win 7.

Thanks.Did it worked before, on watching DVD disc movies on that desktop? What media software are you using when playing movies?
If you want to check on what could be the problem, I suggest you to go your device manager first and look for any yellow or red flags shown on your audio controllers or adapter. There is also a possibility that your media software volume contorls are turned down or muted. Here is a link for you to check on whether you need to check other audio options -> How to troubleshoot audio issues in Windows 7 and Vista
You might also wanna try another free popular media software -> VLC PlayerHi,

While installing sound drivers on your laptops the first and the most important thing that you will have to consider is its compatibility. A sound driver that you choose needs to be compatible with your PCs Operating System and the sound card installed on your Laptop. Then, in case if you fail to choose the right driver, the installation will fail and you will not get the expected quality. Thus, while downloading drivers from the website try to download the drivers that are compatible with your systems sound card.
Thanks for your replies.

Yes, it might be a driver problem - it's just odd that I can listen to YouTube, but not the radio and not a DVD.

I have checked the CP - it all looks ok.

Thanks again.

What program are you using to play the DVD? Have you checked the volume control in that program?

Can you hear system sounds, like the windows startup sound?hello

Thanks again.

I can't hear anything. It's like watching a silent movie.

The PC is 3 weeks old with Win 7 and 300GB of memory.

The speakers work OK, in principle, otherwise I wouldn't be able to listen to YouTube.

I am attaching 2 screen shots if that helps.

The DVD is bought - not a pirate - and part of a set: well-known film.

Thanks for your time.

High1

[regaining space - ATTACHMENT DELETED by admin]In your movie player, do you see the speaker icon? It's right above DVD. I've pointed it out with the red arrow here

Click there and see if you can turn the volume up.

If that doesn't work, download vlc player. Get it here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

See if that program can play your movie with sound.

If you do get vlc player, that other movie player might open by default when you put the DVD into the COMPUTER. If it does, close that window when it opens. To open it with the vlc player, click on the start orb in the lower left corner of your computer's screen. Click on computer and then find the DVD drive in the window that opens. Right click on it, go to open with and choose vlc player.

Good luck.

Solve : Firewire devices not recognized?

Answer»

Hi all hoping someone can help me before I crack!

I have two external storage devices hooked into my FIREWIRE PORTS. One day the computer stopped recognizing the devices. Device manager does not show any conflicts or issues...to try and resolve this issue I have done the following tasks:

1) Update the drivers of the devices
2) Upgraded from Vista to Windows 7
3) Uninstalled the iee from device manager and rebooted
4) Unplugged the devices and rebooted
5) From research on the INTERNET thought it might have been a registry issue...knew I was getting scammed but bought one of those registry cleaner softwares
6) Have not plugged the device into another computer yet....I know it will work and then I will probably resort to the fetal position

Any help, guidance assistance is appreciateNo. Noting that would be clear and simple.

There are a lot, I mean a LOT of malicious software out there. One trick they do is to mess with your drivers in such a way that you can not fix it until you REALLY get rid of the malicious software. If you ever do.

Personally, I have had little results using conventional wisdom in getting rid of such @#$%. Short of erasing the system and starting all over again.

If the devices do work on another system, suspect malicious software. Software drivers don't just 'wear out' like hardware devices. But if it is hardware, the only solution is to replace the bad stuff. How are they reported in Disk Management ? ?
Were they prematurely diisconnected ?

Solve : Registry Error: Access Denied.?

Answer»

I am using a computer with Windows 7 x64 Pro Edition. I was recently screwing AROUND with my registry and didn't remember to export a backup. (Bad idea, I know.) So I messed with some settings to see what they changed, just experimentally, and it didn't seem to do anything. I must have caused a problem, though, since I no longer have ACCESS to the registry editor.

I closed the registry editor and put my computer into standby. When I returned, I went to Start>Run>regedt32.exe like I always do. This time, though, I received the following message: "Registry Editor: Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator." I though that I must have screwed with something so started searching for a solution. It appeared to have a fix in gpedit.msc, so I tried opening that. I then received the following error: "Error: The snap-in below, referenced in this document, has been restricted by policy. Contact your administrator for details. Group Policy Object Editor."

WELL crap. To unlock the Registry Editor, I need to use Group Policy. To unlock Group Policy Object Editor, I need to use the Registry. Could someone help me out here, because I need an alternate method to unlock these after I unintentionally prevented my own access from them.

Other useful information:

I mostly know what I'm doing in the registry, so unless I was just not paying ATTENTION these settings are referenced in multiple keys.

My main account is an administrator, but I have another administrator account which doesn't have these tools blocked. If I could find the correct values in HKEY_USERS then that might be a solution.

I am lead to believe that what I am looking for will be in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, considering the previous line.Use system restore to go BACK to before you messed up.

Solve : Windows Explorer/Taskbar won't open anything, freezes up?

I just recently had a blue screen of death, kernal page dump, didn't have enough time to GET the error code but NEVER had it ever before. Had to shut down my whole computer, then when I try to load windows back up, I log in and as soon as I try to open a program from the taskbar or desktop, the blue circle waiting icon appears next to the mouse point, then it'll just hang there. Always have to shut off my PC, not even alt+ctrl+del will work. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I'm running in safe mode at the moment and the problem doesn't exist there. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I've already tried a clean boot, and ran Malwarebytes but still nothing solved yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! Download BlueScreenView:

Anything else you can suggest? I know it's really tough not knowing what the problem is...but I appreciate any help!1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Did you run a full scan with your anti virus app?I haven't installed anything new since the problem started occuring. However I did download a .rar file that had many other .rar folders within it, and I was in the middle of extracting all of that when the bsod occurred. I use 7zip for unraring files so perhaps it has something to do with that?Quote from: Allan on August 20, 2011, 02:27:55 PM

2) Did you run a full scan with your anti virus app?
Ah yes sorry, I did run an entire scan with Malwarebytes, and AVG, is there another virus scanner I should try? Both scans returned 0 threats/problemsPlease do what you have to do to generate the blue screen error and copy and post the entire contents of that screen. Thank you.I've tried a couple programs to try and find out the bsod error however I don't think it was copied or recorded to my computer, so I would have to wait until I get it again to know what the details would be. So for now I am just going to have to run in safe mode unless I figure out a fix.

Solve : Simple Question About Booting and Operating Systems?

Answer»

Hey Guys. I just had a question.

If I delete all my operating systems (partitions as well) and their is no operating system, will my computer boot, or atleast display something? Will the Bios load, so I can install a fresh copy of xp or seven?

I do have my copies of Windows Seven, and Xp. Im planning a dual boot install.

I want to know because I am going to completely format the whole drive and install xp then seven, so I want to know if I will be able to install Xp or Seven after I wiped the whole drive and their is no operating system. THANKS Greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys!

i have a Compaq preloaded wiht Seven. Any questions feel free to ask.In some cases you need a utility program to WIPE the disc before your can install XP. This can be a floppy disc with DOS 0r a CD with LINUX.
It has been DOCUMENTED by MS some time AGO that XP can not, in some cases, not use a drive that was formatted by another OS. Just find some program that can boot from CD or floppy and wipe the disk. Them install XP.

Assuming nothing has been touched yet...

I'd boot to the windows install disc, use it to format and then follow the instructions to install. (There should be somewhere a format/delete partition option on disc)

However, for dual bot, I'm not sure if you do the XP install first or the win 7 install first... maybe want to google search for an answer to that.

good luck.Quote

Solve : What is after...?

I know laptop will soon have a terabyte available on the HD, my question is what comes next sizewise, after the yottabyte? It is going to be a long time before a unit after the yottabyte is needed. In the case of hard drives, they still need to get past petabyte, exabyte, and zettabyte before they even reach the yotabtye.

If I had to guess, though, I would say that it would be based on the Greek word for nine.

Here is a LIST of all the SI prefixes. [Link]A guy in California is campaigning for hella* for the 10^27 prefix. He says the analysis of many physical phenomena reveals natural quantities in excess of 27 orders of magnitude., e.g the amount of energy released by the SUN would be more elegantly expressed as 0.3 hellawatts than as 300 yottawatts. The guy who heads the Consultative Committee for Units (CCU), the body which advises the international committee, says "The prefixes [zetta & yotta) we introduced 20 years ago are still not widely used. There is no point making changes that nobody pays any attention to and would only make things more complicated." He suggests relaxing the RULE forbidding compound prefixes thus allowing kiloyotta etc.

Even if the need for a new prefix was accepted, there is little chance it would take the name hella, he added. Most existing SI prefixes are derived from Latin or Greek words for numbers, a trend that the committee is keen to continue.

Sorry if I'm asking a lot. I trust you guys at this point, and appreciate all the help so far. Really, thanks a lot! What kind of RAM do you have? Most have lifetime warranty. For recommendations i only use OCZ...or Crucial.

I use Windows 7 Ultimate with Intel Celeron D 2.53 GHz, 1GB DDR 2-533 and an AGP video card of 256 Mb - FX 5500. From the time I used Vista HP, the computer used to freeze. Now the same problem is happening. Always use the Aero look, which I think require a lot of video, which may be causing this crash. After I disable Aero the problem stopped. Will this setup I have is insufficient for video resolutions necessary for these visual systems? Congratulations.Win7 on a Celeron is the basic issue here.AGP video cards were before the Direct3D era-256 MB of onboard DDR RAM will not be good for even flash games. It will certainly not support Aero...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements
the celeron D is fine for normal office use, a quick internet search shows that people can live with Windows 7 on a Celeron D. My local library/bookstore has Celeron Ds running Vista with 2 GB RAM; the user experience is still tolerable... but the AGP card has to make way for a PCI-E card. something cheap, like the GT 440 would be good-you can get the 512 MB version for about the same price as a Turbo-cached 1GB GeForce 210.

Your WORDING is a bit confusing here. What is the "Direct3d era"? My ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP card has 8MB of VRAM and has hardware support for Direct3D 6.0. Much like the Riva 128. Direct3D first became something used by many games around 1998 through 2001; even before that, many games used DirectX, in the form of the "Windows games SDK", which was later renamed to DirectX, which provided access to 3-D accelerator hardware. see games like "Terminal Velocity" (if I recall the title correctly). Also, several Direct3d games are provided in demo form on the windows 98 CD, which means that there were PLENTY of Direct3d games at the time of windows 98's launch. a "Gaming" video card of that day would often be something like the aforementioned ATI Rage Pro Turbo or the NVidia Riva TNT, The former which was USUALLY equipped with 4MB or 8MB of Video Memory, the latter which supported up to 16MB of the same.

Clearly you mean the era of mainstream desktop composition, which is entirely irrelevant with regards to Direct3d.

Additionally, you cannot just buy a PCI-E card and install it, you'll need a motherboard that supports PCI-E. if the motherboard currently has a AGP slot, obviously it won't have any PCI-E slots, certainly none for a video card. So the suggestion basically is "Buy a new computer".

I present an alternative: Don't use aero. Stick with Luna. I meant to say DirectX 8 and above. I'll have to thank you for what I learned, though.

Solve : CTRL-ALT-F1 key?

Answer»

when the F10 key is hit alone and you have FRAPS (a machinima program) it is supposed to capture the screen image. Some COMPUTERS REPORT that this brings up the VOLUME bar.
The Volume bar is supposed to COME up when both the FN and the F10 are hit together.

Anyone got any ideas of why the F10 key alone WOULD be bringing up the Volume bar?
What does this have to do with CTRL-ALT-F1?

Solve : How to adjust Screen Display Size (Not resolution)?

Answer» Edit/Solution FOUND the settings to resize desktop in my Video Card settings program (on mine I have an NVIDIA card so it is called the NVIDIA Control Panel) Thank you to GhostWolf who helped me find this solution!!

I use my Windows 7 Ultimate computer as a media center computer, I hook it up to a television. (if it matters it is a Mitsubishi 1080 series). It has always displayed full across the screen (from top to bottom, left and right, perfectly centered)

All other channels and inputs (my PS2, my Wii and my regular cable) display full screen as well, and there is no option in the menu options to adjust size or position.

Today my computer was accidentally unplugged (my dog did it) and when I TURNED the computer back on, the screen has been resized and shrunk, there is now space to the left and right, top and bottom of the Computer screen. Changing the resolution does not fix the problem.

It is a custom computer with a GeForce 6500 GT Series video card, 2gigs of RAM, and a DUAL core processor (I did not build it, and am only slightly familiar with hardware)

I did VISIT the chat but unfortunately no one could help me. (No one spoke to me. I may have asked the wrong way. English is not my native language.)

Feel free to e-mail me for any more information at kanadesan77 (at) gmail, and I will be checking back here daily.
Thank you for any assistance.

Hi and welcome to Computer HOPE!

Does your Mitsubishi 1080 has its own screen adjust settings like in the modern computer monitors?

Something has changed on my computer. When I used to browse places like CRAIG's list after I read an ad the title of the ad would CHANGE color so I KNOW I read it. Now it doesn't. 2. Is it a replacement or old but still reliable battery?
3. Any particular changes, updates before this issue started?
4. Your CD drive is the INTERNALLY connected drive and not an external cd drive?
5. When you say missing, it cannot be FOUND on both Windows Explorer(My Computer) and on your Device Manager?
Please Answer this Accordingly. Have you tried to remove first the battery and directly connecting AC power adapter on the laptop to see the difference? You mentioned its only when battery is fully charged and plugged in.
Thank for reply!

1. My laptop brand name is Acer 4736z

Follow the link Patio gave you. Click on the Patch and follow the instruction afterwards.I already did it and it is not work.
Dead CD drive then...

But since it's a laptop try ejecting and re-seating the drive...with all power off and the battery removed. In the instance when your cd drive is not detected in Windows explorer and Device manager, try disk management to check for the drive.
Hit Start and type disk management on Search programs and files box, Enter. Your hard drive will be reported as C:(drive) and optical drive as CD-ROM 0(DVD, either D:, E: or F:). Is it also not shown? You could also restart PC, then tap F2 to check on your BIOS utility setup. The information will display also your Hard drive description(Hard drive model name) and optical drive (or ATAPI model name) for your CD drive. Is it also there or not? Do this when CD Drive is not shown as you posted and mentioned above. This is a rare case actually about your drive connected to power adapter or battery being low would cause that effect.

Solve : Hard drive not recoginized?

Answer»

My sister has a 2TB external hard drive connected via USB. After she reloaded Vista, the computer doesn't fully recognize it. The drive boots up and spins. No weird sounds. It appears in Device Manager with no problem. Disk Management says it needs to be initialized. It was working fine before she reloaded Vista.

My first thought is something is wrong with her computer and not the external drive. I've asked her to check the drive on another computer.

She checked the drivers and they seem ok. When she first installed it, Vista already had the drivers. There was no need for a special CD or searching the internet.

If the problem ends up being the drive, I read some where that maybe it's just the MBR needs fixing. Would I use disk check or maybe Disk Doctor or a similar program? She has a lot of files on it and doesn't want to initialize and format the drive. What brand/model is the 2TB hard drive? How was the other computer recognizing the drive? Did you try looking for the removable device by opening up Windows explorer(My Computer)? Try using other USB ports. Also, you could try purchasing a Dual USB data cable or borrowing one. Had this problem before on a portable drive and the dual usb cable solved my issue. Does Disk Management show it as RAW ? ?unless you were TRYING to boot from the external hard drive I wouldn't recommend doing any partition info editing on the external hard drive, CONSIDERING that Windows is not reading the partition properly. The MBR is the Master Boot Record which directs the system to boot from the drive in question.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
[Testdisk] was primarily designed to help RECOVER lost partitions... from the above website.[/size]
What you might be experiencing is a "lost partition," which can occur when the hard drive is plugged out during data transfer. My sister tried it on another computer. The same problem occured. So it's the hard drive and not the computer. She says she always safely ejected the drive and never dropped it. She's dropping it off Wednesday. I'll take a further look at it.

When she installed it on a new computer, the computer installed the driver, showed it in Device Manager and Disk Management, but it's not VISIBLE in Explorer.

The drive is used for data storage. It is not a boot drive. It's not visible in Windows Explorer. Other USB ports and cables were attempted. It's a Western Digital Green wd10eacs-00zjb0. I have several other WD Green's that haven't had a problem, except the one I dropped. There was not a known virus problem.

What is a dual USB cable?

Disk management shows it needs to be initialized, not RAW. I've initialized new drives before.

Should I use TestDisk instead of chkdsk?Quote

If this drive was designed as an internal(SATA/IDE) but instead being use mainly as a portable drive by enclosure, I would seek first connecting it by designed to retrieve the documents. It was an IDE drive. I don't see how that has anything to do with it not working, but I will try it as an IDE drive. It was working fine before, sat on the shelf, then stopped working. Maybe ESD shock. Quote
It was an IDE drive
You still have an option. The first priority here is to recover the files. If it happens that everything went fine by connecting it internally, create a backup plan sooner. It has to be power issue on the enclosures, hopefully. Good Luck!Ehh, enclosure? I'm a cheap azz. I gave her one of those cheap cables that power the HD. They aren't the most reliable. That gives me some more ideas. The IDE to USB cable could be upside down.testdisk provides partition recovery options, which are probably useful in this case....

Something like the above link, you mean? you can't put IDE cables in upside down...

I just remembered I had a similar problem with a USB flash drive-wouldn't show up in explorer but was recognized by device manager. I solved it by assigning a drive letter to the drive.

http://tips4pc.com/format%20your%20computer/how_to_label_a_new_hard_drive_or.htmYes, that's the type of cable. If I remember correctly, one of them you can insert upside down.

I talked to my sister some more. She talked to her kids, and come to find out their youngest did knock the hard drive and it fell to the floor. You never know with kids. If we're able to recover the files, I'll replace the hard drive and make a backup.

I should be able to check the drive tonight. There's a guy a work that has some kind of super-secret software. He's recovered a failed flash drive for me in the past. If things are really bad, I'll send it out to recover the data. It's all of her family photos. There's no backup. Any suggestions for companies that can recover data?Super -secret ? ? ...Be sure to update us on that...YEAH, he's like that. Weird.

I looked at the drive. The only thing that would come up was Device Manager. Disk Management and TestDisk would not see the drive.

Since the files are irreplaceable, I'll look into a hard drive recovery companies. I've already found a few.

Thanks for everybody's help.

Double-click on My Computer and you will see the version of Windows 7 that is installed. How can I tell if my computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows?

Quote

To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:

1. Open System by CLICKING the Start button , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

2. Under System, you can view the system type.
What is exactly wrong with the built-in camera? Aside from not working. Any particular errors/messages to determine its not really functioning? Have you tried using Skype/Yahoo Messenger and launch your cam? On my netbook, I could launch the built-in camera by looking on Start-> All Programs and choosing Arcsoft Webcam Companion 3 Folder then Exe icon/file. I have 64 bit

Im done downloading the driver for my webcam, but when I open the application, it couldnt be open.... it is zip files......the driver did not run.

I was asking also if I want to have the new version then I press the Yes...

Jason, I went to skype already and STILL not working...and my cam is built-in

You have to extract the contents of the zip file and then run the program (.exe file) inside for the driver to install.there is no extract when there... even I right click my mouse there is no extract.. Quote

Before we do any reinstalling of drivers... Check first your device manager.
Click Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager
Look for Imaging Devices or something similar and expand the device.
Right-click the expanded device and choose Properties.
What is the device status? Also, are there any Yellow/Red Flags shown?

Solve : Start menu search problem?

Answer»

I am running vista home premium 64-bit OS

When I perform a start menu search, OFTEN I find what I am looking for. If I don't find it then I have to do an advanced search, and I GET an ERROR message. Across the top of the error message window it says "Microsoft visual c++ runtime library.

The error message says"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way"

Then a window opens saying "Windows explorer has stopped working" Then it says "Windows explorer is restarting."
After the restart has finished, several of the icons in the system tray are gone. A look in task manager on the processes tab, shows the programs, in most cases, are still running just not accessible from the system tray any longer. So I use the processes tab to close prog. so I can restart them and get icons back in system tray to have easy access to the programs, which I use continually.

This is a long standing problem that has been mostly a NUISANCE up until now. Up until now the search results were still present after I restarted the programs so I could find what I am looking for. Now when the window, that said windows was restarting, closes so does the search results. So the effect is that I am no longer able to do an advanced search of my computer.

I looked in uninstall prog. for the control panel and there are 7 entries for MS virtual C++ 2005 and 8 entries for MS virtual C++ 2008. I know there is a 2010 version of MS virtual C++ but it is not installed on my computer so I haven't installed it.

Can anyone help me with this? Thank you.
Check DEP settings. It should be set to .Turn on DEP for Essential Windows Programs and Services only. Try running System File Checker on command prompt.

a. Type ‘cmd’ in the Start Search box. Right click on cmd in the Program list and then select the option Run as administrator.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

b. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow

Thank you for your suggestions. As your suggested, I checked the DEP settings. They were set at : Turn on DEP for Essential Windows Programs and Services only, as you said they should be.

Next I ran system file checker and received the following message: Windows resource protection FOUND corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log.

The wording suggests that some files were fixed, if not all of them. So I tried to do a start menu search of my computer. When I went to the advanced search the search terminated in the manner I described in my initial post.

I opened the CBS.log file and there are pages of text describing the system file check I ran, none of which I understood.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you again for your help.

Solve : Hide/show folders in explorer?

Answer»

I go to Explorer and choose to hide folders and then click on apply. then close explorer.
If I then open Explorer IMMEDIATELY I find that Show folders is checked. Something is obviously doing this programatically but what?
Thanks
HafrenWhat specific location/folders are these? Make sure to hit the Apply below after checking hidden option.the folders are the ONES that Microsoft recommend KEEPING hidden. The ones that contain important Window's files. As I said earlier, I do click on apply to make these folders hidden but something is changing the setting back to Show all folders.Open Windows Explorer(My Computer) and click on Tools, Folder options... and go to View tab. Under Advanced Settings, look for Hidden Files and Folders. Put a dot mark on Don't show hidden files, folders or drives. Hit Apply. Thanks Jason
But what you are suggesting is what I've already been doing and it just doesn't work.
What I was hoping for from this forum was to find someone who had experienced this problem and found a solution to it.
My virus checker and MALWARE and trojan checkers all REPORT no problems.

Does your computer POST? What screen does it crash at?Hi,

You many face boot hang problems during the boot up of Windows 7 operating system. Hanging means booting cannot be PROCESSED after starting the boot process. Slow boot problem INDICATES that it takes a long time to complete the boot process; from starting TILL the END. Virus or malware infection is the main reason for the boot process hanging. If your PC contains many startup processes, you may face slow system boot up. Also limited RAM space could result in the slow boot process.

Solve : Error "has stopped working" after installing DSA Theory Test?

Answer»

I bought a program to study for a driving test, DSA Theory Test for Car Drivers (UK). It took two tries to successfully install it, and even after that it won't OPEN. Every time I click on the shortcut or from the program list I get the "DSA Theory Test Application has STOPPED working."

I have emailed all week with the support from DSA themselves. They finally said that I should try a DVD instead, that it's not the CD itself, but a problem with Windows. That or ask somewhere like here. I bought the CD as a three-pack from Amazon, so I really would rather get this to work than return them all and buy more, or buy a replacement for this on top of the package. The other two disks are DVDs and they work fine. I've searched around ONLINE in general, in other forums, and now here and haven't found anything I understand that seems helpful.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Version 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) on a HP Pavilion.

I have Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X. And I use AVG firewall. I did make sure the program was on the approved list for the firewall, and tried closing my internet connection and still the same problem.

(These were things their support team asked about.)

Any SUGGESTIONS are much appreciated!

Thank you!

When I first TYPE my search in Google the auto results instantly appear when I run without add ons. REGULAR IE9, I'll type a letter in and get a pause and I have to wait. When I run IE9 with add ons, I get long pauses(5 seconds maybe sometimes I think 10).
