Solve : New laptop with some nonworking keys. HELP!?

Answer»

I just purchased a Gateway NV51B laptop. Best Buy already had the driver installed. EVERYTHING works great except for the fact that a small section of keys on the top row don't WORK INCLUDING: PrtSc, Ins, Del, Mute, Lower Sound, Raise Sound, Social Media
All the FN keys are fine.
I'm not that savvy with computers so any advice would be appreciative.
But I have a feeling I'm going to have to take this back to Best Buy tomorrow.

Thanks so much! Return it for a replacement. The complete hot or function keys and description can be found here -> Gateway NV51B Laptop User Guide . Download the Pdf file(generic user guide) and special keys are on Pages 14-18. To check certain keys you posted, PrtSc - hit Prtsc and then open your paint editing software such as Paint.net and the click on Edit menu, look for Paste. Del - Same as backspace, open or create your Notepad, type and press Del key. Ins or Insert - Open any Microsoft Office program and type alpha or numeric keys and then to check INS, hit the key and retype keys. It should function as the word is explanatory, to overwrite. Other FUNCTIONS are shown on the User Guide. It's a brand NEW laptop...it should be returned...Quote

Solve : passwords on win 7?

Answer»

I do not want my passwords saved, every time I log off the internet and go back to the same page it still has my password, I went to internet options then into content, auto complete settings, unchecked all the BOXES, then deleted auto complete history, I shut down the internet and go back on.. and the same web site is still saving my password. It was very easy with xp but I am not getting the same results with win 7. I have win 7 ultimate 32 bit installed See if this helps. Given that the POSTER in this query is trying to do the opposite of what you are realize that you should do the opposite where "unchecking" is indicated. This is given as a guide of where to go to change the options.

truenorthI dont have a problem logging in to the computer, I just dont like that my passwords are kept for my internet sites that I visit, I WOULD like to log on with my password everytime I visit my sites, plus it makes me remember the passwords I dont want to get used to the computer holding my passwords then I will get lazy and forget. My xp was easy to set up for that, but my win 7 is a little complicated right now trying to disable the password keep Thank you true north anyway for your helpYes i DID understand your wishes. As i stated the site i offered is for someone that wanted the passwords REMEMBERED. (i realize that you DON"T want them remembered). The site i included does tell you the PROCESS for remembering them. However by going to the computer links that are given you should be able to effect the changes needed so they will NOT be remembered. Unless of COURSE what you really are referring to are "cookies" related to your web searching. If so that is a different process. But it too is achievable. So which is it?truenorthQuote from: redbird on August 28, 2011, 08:59:17 AM

Well, I think you caused some confusion by putting your topic in the Windows section instead of the Internet browsers section and by naming your topic "passwords on win 7" when you're really asking about passwords relating to websites, not the Windows user Logon password.

The link truenorth posted relates to Windows user passwords, not passwords used to access websites when browsing the web. Here's a reference on clearing saved passwords from IE: http://kb.iu.edu/data/alcx.htmlSoy bean, that's it thank you, true north you too all is appreciated

As a rule, if a boot manage and do both Vista and an old OS. then it will do Windows 7. But I want to make sure. These type of managers have to intercept the BIOS call to the MBR loader and use their own boot loader. Not ENDORSED by Microsoft.Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 19, 2011, 02:13:48 PM

Thank you. I'm not understanding on what bootsec.dos has to do with it? I haven't had DOS on my PC in a couple of years, so I don't have an old bootsec.dos to use.

I'm sorry about that.RE: Windows 7 and DOS 6.22 on the same hard drive.
A brief report.
Most often the 'experts' say use a Virtual Machine.
You might install DOS 7.1 and Windows 7 on the same disk
You might boot DOS 6.22 from a USB. BIOS dependant.
DOS 6.22 can not be installed above the 7.5 GB mark.
DOS 6.22 must be on an active primary partition.
Once source says GPART has to be used.
Another says EasyBCD NEEDS to be used.
Others claim GRUB will do it.
I am testing two different third party boot managers the promise to do the job. They are FREE. Will report back later.I have go to a DEAD end on this project. Here is how far I got.
Found a good copy of MS-DOS 6.22 which does NOT support FAT32 file system and can not be located beyond about 7.7 GB on a hard drive.
Now I have Windows 7 and DOS 6.22 on the drive and both working. But I can not make a valid boot menu for them. I have to use a floppy to go SET a partition active to boot either windows 7 of MS-DOS 6.33 on that one drive.

Windows 7 has the first and third partitions. DOS has the second. Yeah, but it works. Just no simple way to make amen All Boot loaders I have tried insist that they have to be in the active partition. Won't work that way.

The DOS partition is just FAT, not FAT32.
Using DOS 7.1 would mean using FAT32, which changes the game.

The objective of the experiment was to see if both DOS 6.22 and Windows 7 could be on the same hard drive in each his own partition and boot either from a menu.

Using a USB or floppy is not fair. Just the hard drive. And no fair using smoke and mirrors. One product recommends putting a patch in the BIOS. No, I won't go that fa'.

I will quit here. Which tool did you use?
BCDedit? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2676-bcdedit-how-use.html
BCD Editor? http://www.boyans.my3gb.com/
Or something else?I used Easy BCD. Could not get it to work. I will try those.

The OP wants to put D OS 6.22 and Windows 7 on the same hard drive.
Dos can be started from a floppy, but OP wants it on the hard drive.

Windows 7 does NOT destroy the DOS drive. Rather, it creates its own partition and refers to it as the C drive, although it is in fact the second partition.

This is want works for me.

Erase a drive and prepare it so tat there is a FAT partition at the start of the drive. It must be under the 2GB limit. A 200 MB is lots for DOS applications.
After installing and testing DOS 6.22, install Windrows 7.

To get back into DOS, boot from a CD that allows you to switch the active partition and reboot from the hard drive.
This could be the same CD used to install MS-DOS to the hard drive.

The OP can do a Google for
Build DOS 6.22 install CD
And find out how to make a bookable DOS CD.
A simple solution.

WINDOWS 7 - System Restore General Troubleshooting to Fix Issues

3305.

Solve : Annoying login error at startup?

Answer»

Right so I've been using this notebook for while now, and this issue has literally just appeared.

Whenever I try to BOOT up the pc everything goes normally, that is until I attempt to log in. Whenever I enter the correct password and actually login into the username the welcome MESSAGE will appear and act as if the OS is going to boot normally. However, the pc never actually starts up it just stays on that welcome message until the pc automatically restarts.

I was able to receive a blue screen once after five tries, but that only lasted for about thirty seconds, so I could't exactly read all that it had to say.

I'll also note that I am unable to login in safe mode as well. Also my OS is windows 7. Chkdsk has also came up empty as well, and my restore points have all mysteriously vanished. Is no one willing to help? It's not about a willingness to help. Your post has only been up for a few hours. People volunteer here, and will GET around to helping you when they're available.

It sounds like something about the Windows boot process has failed that is preventing you from getting into NORMAL or safe mode. If you have the means to put the drive into ANOTHER computer and backup your files, do so before attempting to fix this.

Since this is a notebook, you will likely have recovery CDs. If you never made recovery CDs or they weren't included, the computer might have a recovery partition which can be used to restore the system to factory defaults. However, using either recovery method erases everything from the computer (which is why I suggest backing up anything you want) and restores it to the condition it was when you bought it.

Unfortunately, unlike a normal Windows CD, these recovery methods usually don't include a "repair" option. However, if yours does, you can try that before doing a full restore. Still, back up your information first, as things can go wrong that are irreversible.

Solve : I installed the wrong system?

Answer»

I was recovering my husbands pc back to factory and I used the wrong cds to reinstall his system. I used my laptop cd's instead and now he can't play WoW. His system is showing up as Dell Inspirion 1545 and it is supposed to be a Dell Inspirion Desktop 545MT. Now I cannot find his CDs for his computer. Is there anyway that I can get his computer back to factory now? My WARRANTY just ended about a month ago too... Check if his computer has a RECOVERY partition (a sometimes hidden part of the HARD drive that works like the restore CDs).

If not, and you still can't find the CDs, you might be able to order a new set of CDs from Dell. How do I check that? Quote from: jenlynn_m766 on August 28, 2011, 10:06:42 PM

How do I check that?

The manual that came with the computer should have information on that. I'm trying to DOWNLOAD a copy of the manual now, but their support site is running rather slow for me. I'll keep trying.Ok, from what I read, this should work if the restoration CDs you used didn't erase or overwrite the restoration partition.

When the computer is booting, push F8 repeatedly until you get to the Advanced Boot Menu. Use the arrow keys to choose the option "Repair Your Computer" and press enter. Follow the on screen prompts and see if that works to restore the original 545MT system.Just a reminder, doing this will erase EVERYTHING current on the computer. Back up anything you need before doing the restore.

Solve : Help- black screan with cursor before login?

Answer»

Hi all
Yesterday i was playing pc and
the energy went down and my pc
turned off.
today when i started my pc i appeard a black screen with cursor and stucks right there and i cant login.
i have windows vista
plz someone help meHere Ya Go...i cant download anything because im on WII and i liked to ask if u know any other solution?
thanksNot offhand...No.Here are some tips to fix black screen error on Windows 7 systems with the cursor hang:

Use Windows 7 DVD

You can use the Windows 7 DVD to repair these black screen issues in the system. For this, you need to insert the DVD in the system and then restart the system. You will be then prompted to press any key to boot from the disk. After pressing any key, you will reach the “Install Now” screen. In this screen, you need to select the ‘Repair Your Computer’ options. In the next screen appearing, you will get two options from which you need to select the first option and then select the OS you installed in the system. Choose ‘Start-Up Repair’ from multiple repair options. You will get the system restarting itself and you can get the issue resolved with this.

Last known good configuration

It is possible that any serious changes to the Windows 7 system get it in black screen error with the cursor hang. You can try restoring the system to its last known good configuration to resolve the issue. For this, you need to tap specific keys to enter the set-up of the system. As the BIOS appear, search out the Restore Default Settings options. After selecting the option, save it and then exit the MENU. You will then get the system to its INITIAL state. You will get a boot options menu as your computer restarts and you need to select the ‘Last known good configuration’ from this.

Disconnect any external devices

If still you experience the black screen issue in Windows 7 system, you can check if any of system hardware is causing the issue. For this, you need to remove each external device of the system and try to start up the system. You may try disconnecting any UNWANTED internal devices to fix the issue.

Solve : putting my old HDD into a new/different PC?

Answer»

Hi one & all,
New here, I need some advice! My old PC motherboard failed so I took out the harddrive (Sata 160Gb) with Win7 & all my files on it. Am I able to put that HDD into another computer and still use Win7 etc? No, the disk will almost certainly not boot Windows in another computer. You can install it in another working computer and get your files off but you would need to reinstall Windows before you could use it as the main drive of a computer.
Thanks for the tip. I'm disappointed as I don't have a win 7 disc. I do have windows backed up on another HDD & I also backed up windows onto a DVD with some repair/help apps. I might try those and get back back to you.
Thanks again for your reply. The problem will be that each installation of Windows is tied to the machine that it was originally installed on. When you run the Windows installation CD or DVD it creates an installation for the HARDWARE that it finds - motherboard, network/display/sound cards, cpu type, etc. If you just take that disk and put it in another computer, there is a very large chance that it will fail to boot because the hardware is different. Eeven if it does boot, you will most likely have Windows activation issues because you are trying to run Windows on a new machine. If your backup of Windows on another HDD is a proper imaged backup of the machine with a failed motherboard, then unless you get an identical motherboard, you are going to have hardware compatibility problems, and even then you would need to reactivate Windows.

How come you had Windows 7 on the old machine but you don't have a Windows 7 install disk?
Thanks for your reply. I understand what your saying.
I took my old PC to my local repair shop to sort out some driver issues & he said they would install win7 for a very competitive fee. I didn't ask any questions! & said yes!Slave Drive Tutorial...

So this pirate install of Windows has ripped off both you and MICROSOFT. When you get a new machine you should pay for a legal genuine Windows install disk, which you can use whenever you run into problems and need to re-install.

You are, of course, quite correct. I will save up & BUY one. I would hate to see a multimillioI do apologise, I was being flippant in my last reply. My frustration got the better of me.

I will be buying a 'legit' copy in due course, and as you quite rightly point out it will save problems in the future.

There is absolutely no need to apologise! In fact it is I who should apologise to you, for presuming to lecture you about piracy. Let me therefore clarify:

1. I do not give a *censored* about loss of revenue to Microsoft. I would be a hypocrite to say that I did, but I am not going to tell you why!
2. This site has a "no help with piracy" policy, probably for practical reasons (not good to have a takedown letter from a software company's lawyers) as much as for MORAL reasons, although some on here are very strongly in the "piracy is theft" camp.
3. I should have restricted myself to remarking about the practical consequences to the user of using pirated Microsoft OS: lack of access to support and updates, danger of activation problems, possibilty of malware infection on downloaded versions, etc.

So good luck with your computer problems, and I hope we will be able to help you with them.

Salmon trout, thanks for you reply. I understand your points & THANK you for your help.
I will be back, as I have a knack for overestimating my computer knowledge!

Solve : Windows Vista O/S not starting?

Answer»

Ok..what if I don't know anyone that has Vista? And that LINK to a clean reg key didn't work. Is there a WAY that I could get it online from my sister's computer? She is 2 hours away from me.

And this step is very confusing to me. 4. Run sfc /scannow on the damaged Vista computer - you won't need the install disk as it goes to backup files on your HD. Do not reboot when complete

Heck all of it is confusing to me.Well now I see that step was later changed. But still..how would I "import registry settings into damaged Vista computer"? And this Windows Installer Service is to repair Vista right? It seems like it is for adding and removing programs. Or am I wrong? You stated earlier you had a Vista CD...now you don't...which is it ? ?I do! But that says to go to a computer with Vista?? I don't see anything about a CD.1. Go to a Windows Vista (Any Version) computer that has the Windows
Installer service running correctly and run regedit(Start-Run-Regedit)

That means USE a different computer that has Vista working on it right? Or can I get the registry key from my install DVD SOMEHOW? I'm not sure about that registry key thing. But if anyone could provide some more direction for that I would appreciate it.

Or will doing this http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=RC1084719&l=en&s=k12&docid=DSN_339949&isLegacy=true with my Vista Reinstallation DVD be the same as requesting a recovery CD from Dell? If I do this "reinstall" will it get rid of what is on there now? And I mean the O/S and everything. Since I was able to use Linux to get my files, I am not worried about wiping the hard drive anymore. I actually really just want to START OVER with this computer.

Just to be clear, under the F8 menu Repair Your Computer is not an option for me. Ctrl+F11 or 0 didn't work. And I guess there aren't any restore points so system restore doesn't work. Diagnostics didn't find any errors and the memory tests passed.Do you have a Vista CD ...or not ? ?Yes I do! From reply #10 in this topic:
Quote

It's the one I got from Dell when I got my computer. It says Operating System Already INSTALLED on Your Computer Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT.
If you're asking if I used my DVD to attempt to repair my computer. Yes, I did. Startup Repair didn't find any problems. From bleepingcomputer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial142.html "If the repair process does not detect any problems starting Vista, it will display a list of available recovery tools." And that is exactly what it did. So I tried System Restore...for some reason there's not a restore point available. Windows Complete PC Restore doesn't allow me to do anything either. Can't remember exactly what it says. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. Again no errors.

Sorry if I did not make it clear before. But it seems like using my Vista DVD to reinstall is my only option. I just want to know if that will do what I need it to do. Essentially restore my computer to factory settings.I'm not sure if anyone is going to reply anyways. But just so you all know, I reinstalled my O/S so no need to answer any of my other questions. I got help from some IT people at school. They said the hard drive looks ok and they were just as confused as I was about how Vista just wasn't there. I will probably be installing updates for a while but that is what I'm doing now.Wow..so just after posting that I got a BSOD. It restarted after an update and then I got it. If I post the log here can anyone help? Should I continue updating?

Solve : vertical scrolling?

Answer»

Hi. When I VERTICAL scroll in a folder a date/time stamp appears to identify the link or PICTURE I am SCROLLING past. It just started doing this, and it BLOCKS part of the folder. It appears once I've started to scroll. How do I deactivate this function?

When I open a folder full of, say shortcuts and links, and as I scroll down through the folder just beside the vertical scroll bar, on the inside of the folder, a little box appears an displays the date/ time of the link, or the name of the picture if its a jpeg, and this identifier changes to each each link or name I have in the folder as I scroll down, and ACTUALLY blocks the items in my folder.

Solve : Unable to run Win 7 in normal mode?

Answer»

When I load into Normal mode my computer freezes after it shows the Windows logo.

My computer is running Widows 7 Professional 32 bit
My processor is AMD Athalon 64 3700+

I have run chkdsk from the command prompt.
I have run sfc /scannow
I have run msconfig and done a selective start-up plus disabled all start up tab items.

None of the above stopped the lock up problem.1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, ETC)?

2) Did you run chkdsk or did you run chkdsk /r? If only the former, re-run it with the /r switch. It doesn't sound like a hd problem, but let's rule it out.

3) I'm guessing you can boot to safe mode? If so, here's the CORRECT way to do a selective startup:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the CAUSE of your problem. After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise MANAGE startup programs.Have you tried Last Known GOOD Configuration from the advanced startup screen?I suspect the PC doesn't meet Win7 requirements...
More info:

This computer was running XP. I did a CLEAN install of Win7 and everything worked fine for 3 weeks. Then the computer would freeze every couple of days with the running time getting progressively shorter until now when it can't get passed the logo stage in normal mode. It works perfectly in safe mode with networking.
I ran chkdsk /r.
I ran msconfig and disabled all the start items in the startup tab and I set selective startup in the general tab but I couldn't uncheck the greyed out third box use original boot.
I do not have a clean restore point to roll back to.

Solve : my computer turns on then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor?

Answer»

i dont have a reboot or recovery diskOperating System? What changes or occurrence were coincident to this fault? Can you get into safe MODE? Your post is truly a fantastic example of brevity but when it comes to seeking help from others that don't have the advantage of your onsite awareness that is not the best approach to achieve your desire for assistance. More is usually better. truenorthwindows vista home edition nothing really i went and turned it off and when i tried to turn it back on it GOES PAST the blue screen then the screen turns black and there is a blinking curcor in the top left hand CORNER of the screen thats all i knowhow do i run an anti virus software through command prompt it doesnt make any sense btw i had mcafee installed before the problem Hi,

Here are some tips to fix black screen error on Windows 7 systems with the cursor hang:

You may try disconnecting any unwanted internal devices to fix the issue.
michelsmith, It is indeed commendable that you have chosen to come forth with the intention to assist the O/P. However ALL your suggestions relate to Win 7 and the O/P has told us the O/S is Vista. Additionally the O/P has stated "i dont have a reboot or recovery disk" so it would appear that your 1ST suggestion as it could apply to Win 7 is NOT an option.
I am still awaiting the O/P's response as to whether they are able to boot the computer into safe mode. truenorth

Solve : Restarting my entire corrupt dell 9200 pc - Wont load windows vista?

Answer»

Hi there - i appreciate anyone who can help me with this...

I have a dell 9200 running windows vista. About 2 weeks ago, the whole thing crashed. I wouldnt boot up at all. It would load the dell bios screen, but would stop loading after te "all rights reserved" screen, just before attempting to load my windows.

Ive gone through 3 hard drives, as i run windows media CENTER, but i was really pissed to see it crash all over again.

I have all of the boot cds but i fear that my hard drive might be corrupted again. I dont care about recouping any of the info on my hard drive anymore, i just want to get it running again. Ive gone through system settings, and tried to boot from my cds, but cant figure it out. Should i put the "drivers and utilities" cd in first and try to boot from cd. Or the windows vista cd? Ive tried tons of VARIATIONS, and no luck.

I just want to wipe my hard drive completely (provided it still works) and reinstall everything, but i can get past the system setup in the dell bios screen.

Ive even unplugged my hard drive, (so that it would actually reach the system setup without freezing), but i cant seem to get to a point where i can actually wipe my hard drive.

I have memory sticks, all the cds, blank dvds, etc.... I just really need help.

Im writing this from my ipad (thank god).

I would appreciate any help i can get guys - thank you tonsYou computer looks a lot like mine. But mine is older.
My personal experience with my Dell laptop E1705 is the hard drive went dead when the machine overheated doing a transfer of video files to my home server. My shop is not air conditioned and the laptop could not take the heat. So from now on the Laptop stays in the house. Even the router in the barn has to have a fan on it!
Anyway, I recommend you get a replacement hard drive. Don't try to use a failing drive as a system drive. High risk of annoyance and irritation.
I found a decent SATA drive with 320GB for about $44 on Amazon. So far, it works good. To date I have not got recovery of even a bit of data from the dead drive. Had to use month old backups to get my stuff back. Lost of month of NOTES I made.

I am now making backups more often. Or at least sync my documents to the remote machine in the barn. I use an external USB for an image backup. With this Dell laptop image backup is the only way to go. It will not clone directly to an external drive. I have to do image and restore.

Get a replacement drive, start over. Maybe get some of your stuff off the old drive before it fails all the way. Thanks a million for the advice -
Ive been tentatively waiting on here for someone to get back to me with something.

Ive been scoping out drives online, trying to find one for cheap. If thats my last resort, then no problem, i was just looking to know if mine is busted (as i am very stubborn).

I just hate the idea that in 3 YEARS ive gone thru 3 drives (now 4) ugh.

Thanks a ton for your time
I think the heat kills them.

Solve : im so lost... ill let you try.?

Answer»

i have an ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics card and 8g ram, 1tb hd , AMD Phenom II 2800Mhz 6core processor..... why does my game (world of warcraft) lag when i PLAY it :[

- internet is fine my old computer never lags
- i turned my firewalls off, nothing....

any insight or suggestions would be awesome. Can you tell us what you have tried already?

Is this a new machine? Is this the only game that lags? Or does your system lag when doing other things?

Can you explain what you mean by "lag" exactly? Is the game itself stuttering (low frame rates, jumpy graphics, complete freezing of the screen for several seconds at a time) or is the game still smooth but other people jump around, commands from hotkeys or clicks are slow, etc.?

If there is stuttering in the game itself, this is a HARDWARE related issue. ATI 3000 is a series, but there as far as I can find there was never a 3000 CHIPSET. There was 3200, 3300, 3470, etc. They're all quite mostly low end in the 3000 series, except for maybe the 3870 which is a mid-range card now. If you're using any one other than the 3870, you're probably pushing your card to the limit, which will result in a very jerky game experience with low frame rates. As an example, the 3870 is comparable to the Nvidia 9600 GT, which is what is in my girlfriend's system. She can play at almost full detail (shadows, water, and sunshafts down a notch). Usually, she doesn't have too many problems except in very player-populated areas (an auction house for example). She usually gets about 30 FPS, but in heavy areas it can drop to 10FPS or worse at times. Issues like this are directly related to your hardware.

My new computer, for example (see my specs by hovering your MOUSE over "Specs" to the left) never drops under 60FPS on Warcraft, even areas where she suffers horribly at the same time.

If you're not experiencing symptoms like that, and are instead experiencing the second set of issues (other people jump around, slow response from the UI or hotkeys, slow NPC response times when you click them, etc.) then you are having latency issues, which would indicate your internet connection and not your hardware.

You can check both your framerate and latency in-game by placing your cursor over the menu icon in the bottom bar (in the row between your hotkeys and bag icons). Can you post both of those? Do you experience issues when out questing or doing dungeons or in cities or raids? Or is it the same pretty much everywhere you go?I should correct myself and add something. It could be something more than your internet connection if it's a latency issue. I had an issue for a while with my internet security suite causing latency issues with some online games (including Warcraft). This was fixed by turning off the "Web Scanner" feature of the suite (I was using Kaspersky at the time). I talked to Kaspersky support about it and they were baffled as to why. Still to this day never was able to GET it fixed. Switched to Norton and no longer have problems.

Solve : hp dv4 recovery with external monitor? ( windows 7)?

Answer»

i'm trying to go into recovery mode with my laptop using an external monitor (tv). the laptop's LCD is broken. when i hit the key to go into recovery mode the external won't show up. is there a way i can make this work? on the laptop's screen i can SEE that the recovery is running but can't make out enough to click the options. i tried to hit Fn F4 or whatever i usually use to switch it between the default and external screens. Your only CHOICE here with a busted LCD may be ordering the Recovery CD's from HP which will install video drivers when you boot to them for the recovery...If you boot up the laptop with the external monitor already connected, do you see the BIOS screen (hit "F2 to enter setup", or something similar) on the external monitor? If so, you may be able to change a setting in the BIOS that FORCES the external monitor to be switched on, when you first boot. If you can't see anything on the external monitor, you may have to do that STEP "blind" - if there's the slightest chance you can get an HP DV4 owner to work out the necessary steps...

Replacing the LCD screen: around £50 for a screen on eBay, typically. Further £50 to get someone reputable to replace it.

Solve : Re: Corrupted ci.dll file, crashes even in safe mode, windows won't reinstall either?

Answer»

Help getting error that ci.d11 file is missing. Tried windows Vista repair but when it came up to the window that asks you to click on your operating system. There is no system listed. Help!Quote

Hi

Ihad that problem on last Thusrday night, while I was on a big urgent project (have you ever noticed PROBLEMS always happen at the worst moment?). I SPENT my night trying to use Windows' repair tool, with no result. I was not able to start either in safe mode or in any other WAY. The Report was always POINTING an absent or corrupted CI.dll.

Finally, I found the solution in a forum. In fact, while Windows' repair tool mentions it as the cause, CI.dll IS NOT THE PROBLEM

The problem is a virus in the HDD Master Boot Record. My yet-excellent antivirus NOD32 was unable to cure the problem when the incident happened. It just reported it, but did not clean it.

The solution, in my case, was a virus remover found at Kapersky's. See :
http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

I just took my HDD off my computer and connnected it to another puter through an external USB dock, then applied TDSSKiller from the other computer. It took less than 1 minute. Once the HDD back in its ORIGINAL computer, I booted with no problem, and everything worked and still works fine.

HTH

Good Luck
Philippe

Solve : randomly displayed image hijacks cursor!?

Answer»

I am being driven almost insane by what appears to be a volume control bar that randomly appears in front of any other windows that are open in the middle of the screen. It appears and disappears at random.

When I move the cursor, it is immediately dragged back to this bar. Can anyone suggest what this is and how I might fix it?

Here is a link to a screenshot of the offending bar:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7295322/joys%20cursor%20hijacker.jpg

I'm using Windows 7 by the way.

Mark.1) What is new or different since the LAST time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
2) Boot to safe mode. Does the same thing happen there? It's not my PC so I'm not sure what has changed. I will try booting to sage mode and see whether the problem persists. And please ask whoever owns the pc what I asked you. That looks like a proprietary volume bar, not one that belongs to Windows, which means it can probably be UNINSTALLED without issues if it's causing problems.

In addition to Allan's questions:

On some of the NEWER keboards there is a Fn key like on notebooks. That when pressed with another key will change the volume, control the Disk player. . .

The key is placed between the Windows Key and the Ctrl key.

Solve : Deleting accumilated Backups?

Answer»

I NOTICE over time there is a lot of older backups. Should I continue to let them accumulate or at some point should I delete some of them? What particular file/folder backups? There are users tasks scheduling tools for enabling/disabling Win Vista and Window 7 .
i believe there is a tool in 'system restore' to allow you to change the frequency/amount of times the system creates a backup a month/year... something, if not, it may have been in control panel.

P.S. if you don't know how to get to sytem restore, just type it in to START >search PROGRAMS and files

if i'm wrong, sorry, just delete the post, ima not careWhat backups are you TALKING about? PLEASE be specific.

Solve : InstallShield is eating my computer alive?

Answer»

I just built a new computer, and everything is swell, except when I try to install ANY software. Below are the specs of my PC:

AMD Phenom 1100t 6-core @ stock 3.3 ghz
16gb DDR3 1600 G-Skill
GeForce 560 Ti Fermi
2x 1TB Raid0 5600rpm
Windows 7 64-bit

When I try to install something, the computer hangs for a lifetime with (Not Responding). If I let it sit, take a short nap (exaggeration), and come back, it finally will have unfroze, and lets me finish the install. This is EXTREMELY unpractical. Everything else runs fine, and blazing fast.

Is there a bug/glitch with InstallShield Wizard that I missed? Is there a way I can just delete it and be gone with it? Any alternatives?

I just want this computer to run smooth and not give me a headache, please help What does Installshield have to do with the problem?

Oh, sorry. You said "when I try to install ANY software", you didn't specifically say only software installers that used Installshield.

By the way, when you ask for alternatives, I'm not really sure what you are asking for. Either a software installer was created with Installshield wizard (which is a program for creating installers) or it wasn't.

In either case, see what happens if you temporarily disable any AV program you have running.I dont have any anti-virus protection. This is a fresh format of Windows7, and havent had the chance to install anything.

I was beginning to believe it was Bad Memory, but I haven't received any other troubles (i.e. Blue screens, application lock-ups) other than with the InstallShield Wizard.
Not to mention, I ran MemTestx86; Got 50 or so ECC Errors, but the program fixed the errors, and those errors did not APPEAR on the second, THIRD, or fourth Memory Test after the first.MemTest does not repair RAM errors...if you got 50 + you have a bad stik of RAM and/or a flakey PSU...Quote from: patio on September 02, 2011, 07:23:04 AM

Why wouldnt the errors pop up during the other tests though?
Cant you swap them out to FIND the bad one, or do you really need 16GB RAMQuote from: reddevilggg on September 02, 2011, 07:25:26 AM
Cant you swap them out to find the bad one, or do you really need 16GB RAM

I do a lot of video rendering, 3ds max rendering, and other gaming needs. I dont think it's fair to question my reasoning for "needing" them; If I buy a product, I expect it to work 100% to advertised specs.

And to answer your question:

I got home from work 4 hours ago, and spent the last 4 hours battling this computer again. It had entered hibernation mode, and wouldn't come out of it. I rebooted, and it went into Windows Startup Repair tool, and wouldn't complete the procedure, nor bypass it. I was forced to re-partition the drives, and now I'm on a fresh install again. Over the past day, I've had 1x 4GB ram stick in (one of the four I had ordered), and the computer was stable with no Blue screens, nor any stutters.
NOW, after yet another fresh Windows 7 Install, I go to install my software, and face the exact same problem that brought me to these forums to begin with. Installshield starts, and my computer completely halts for minutes at a time. EVERY window enters a (Not Responding) state, and won't let me do anything (I can't EVEN bring up Task Manager to officially see what is eating all the available resources)

I already filled out an RMA with NewEgg to get all 4 strips of RAM replaced; I should be getting the new sticks by Tuesday/Wednesday.

My question is:
Can this be processor and/or Motherboard related problem as well?Quote from: MADNESS7 on September 03, 2011, 07:38:50 PM
I do a lot of video rendering, 3ds max rendering, and other gaming needs. I dont think it's fair to question my reasoning for "needing" them; If I buy a product, I expect it to work 100% to advertised specs.
He was suggesting it as a troubleshooting step. You don't need 16GB for any of the described tasks(I do all of those quite comfortably with 8GB), obviously the more RAM the better, but and if you are having problems you aren't going to be doing any of them to any degree regardless of the amount of RAM you install anyway. The POINT was to work with one stick at a time to find the bad ones. Seems that ended up being what you did (using 1 4GB stick). (Did you test the other sticks on their own as well? It could be entirely unrelated to the RAM sticks themselves and be a problem only with one of the memory slots.

And to answer your question:

Quote
and face the exact same problem that brought me to these forums to begin with. Installshield starts, and my computer completely halts for minutes at a time.
What applications have you installed so far that use Installshield?

I just was able to confirm it is not just a InstallShield problem. Turns out all the software I had installed was using InstallShield, but I just went further and tried installing Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 (which doesn't use InstallShield) and got the immensely long halt as well.

Yes, I did try all the other sticks one by one, and this one seemed to be the only stable one that didn't cause Blue screens while running games/programs. I play Heroes of Newerth (which isn't a stable game itself, so it's not that good of an example), and had 4 blue screens within the span of 30 minutes of playing.

I just fear this being a Motherboard or CPU issue, but I just find it hard to believe with it being so specific to the problems I'm having. It seems the only unreliability I can replicate over and over again is through the installation of software.

EDIT: I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic on the current RAM stick installed and it found no errors.Try disabling protection softwares, system scanners when installing certain programs. See if it makes a difference.

Before I could do that, my computer crapped out again.

I found an old harddrive in my closet, and plugged it in. With it plugged in, partitioned to windows 7, and all 4 RAM sticks (and new parts) installed, I'm running smooth as silk. Not a single hiccup yet.

I had 2x WD Black 1TB drives in Raid0 format before... think it could be a problem with one of the drives, or are both screwed?

Solve : install problem?

ok here is the issue I was trying to reinstall windows VISTA on my computer but somethin went wrong and now I have no access to the computer. A blue screen comes on saying that there is a problem and windows has shut down so to not damage the computer. I tried booting from the INSTALLATION dvd and all I get is a black screen. Is there a way to get my computer up and running so I can FINISH REINSTALLING windowsCheck in the bios for hard drive access mode, if it is set to Raid or achi then best to set it for IDE compatibility mode. You MAY be able to boot the computer without completing the windows reload,

Solve : How do I get rid of a contact name??

Answer»

Hi -
I use YAHOO mail. I recently changed to the new Yahoo mail. I have Windows VISTA Home Basic 32 bit.
I have a contact who changed his address from "@verizon.net" to "@suddenlink.net". I deleted his old address and entered his new address in my "contacts". Now when I want to send him an e-mail, I click on "compose message" and the space "TO" comes up with a blinking bar. When I enter his initial his old address comes up. I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of his old address but nothing works. I have even deleted his name from my list of contacts but that did not help. Any suggestions?
Thanks BobTry permanently deleting them -> http://help.yahoo.com/qe/my/tutorials/cont/con_delcon5.htmljason2074 -
Thanks for your reply but I did not make my problem plain enough. The address is not in my contacts. The name and address I want to get rid of only appears when I try to send the person an e-mail. It appears in the space where you are ASKED to enter the person's initial, then his address while automatically be added. It is the only place the wrong address appears. The person's name and address (new or old) does not appear in the contacts list. I have no idea where the wrong address comes from or how to get rid of it when I try to send an e-mail. Thanks Bob If you are using the latest Ymail version, I think that feature is already removed which is the Filters, Autocomplete (Do not use Address AutoComplete) settings/preferences availbale on the Classic Version. If you can switch to classic, maybe you could try this suggestion.jason2074 -
I will try. Thanks Bobjason2047 -
My problem is solved!!! I put the address that was wrong into the contacts list and clicked on "compose message" to see if it came up and it did. Then I went to my contacts list and deleted it. I clicked on "compose message" and the wrong address never showed up. I do not know how the wrong address kept showing up when it was not in my contacts list. I am Happy.
Let US leave well enough alone. Thanks BobI thought you got lost with the wrong address. Good to know its fine now.

You might also want to install Spyware Blaster and update it weekly (free) and MalwareBytes (also free) and scan the system every week or two. Other than that, smart computing is all you need (don't open links in emails, know where you're surfing, etc).

Solve : Win7- Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot determine problem?

Answer»

I have been running Win7-64 bit without issues from right after it was fully released on a new ASUS MB. yesterday, it crashed and wouldn't boot. It goes OK up until the point where i suspect some drivers may be loading and one of them is killing win 7. I booted from the DVD and GOT it into the screen where you have 6-7 different options to repair. I tried the system restore using sequentially older restore points, andn one of them worked, same symptoms. I was able to review the log and got to the SECTION where it listed "Bugcheck analysis". It said root cause found- recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing system from starting. I am using an ATI Radeon HD4670 card.
I tried running sfc/scannow and it RETURNS a message that says "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again? I reboot and run through the process, but never got past the ...system repair pending message?
I think all of the data is intact on the drive as I can use the command prompt window and find things on the drive.
Any steps I should go through to determine if this is a driver issue or something else?

Thanks!

JamesWhat new programs and/or hardware did you install prior to this ? ?I have not installed any new programs or hardware. Windows update runs on a routine basis though. I did finally manage to catch the BSoD error. It said "Video driver failed to initialize"... blah blah...if this is the first time....

DO you know if it is possible to delete and reinstall the proper ATI drivers from the dos prompt from the CMD line from the Win 7 recovery screen? To do it from a command prompt from the Recovery Console takes a good working knowledge of command prompts...
I would attempt to do it from safemode 1st if that's an option. The computer will not boot into SAFE mode. RIght after the screen that says "windows" when the graphics mode switches to the one where the main windows screen would normally appear, you get the BSoD no matter if you boot in safe mode or normal windows mode..... BSoD says GRaphics driver failed to initialize. Are you tapping F8 REPEATEDLY right after powering up the machine ? ?
yes, right after powering it upI'm not quite clear here so i apologise...but if you are able to get into the RC you should also be able to get into safemode...I have managed to get it to boot into the menu that gives you the numerous boot options.. safe mode, safe mode with networking, low res mode, etc, etc.. no matterwhich option I try, I still get the BSoD with the phrase "Video Driver Dailed to Initialize".
Any other suggestions would be most appreciated, such as the specific path to go in and delete all ATI drivers if that would help? Is it possible to edit the registry to remove any reference to ATI drivers from the CMD prompt as I can't get into windows without the BSoD?
Thanks!
[emailprotected]

e-mail addy removed to prevent SPAMHmmm...longshot, but try one of these:

1) Try "Last Known Good Configuration..." It seldom works for me, but you may get lucky.

2) Try "Enable VGA Mode." That should load your desktop in 640x480 resolution without using ATI drivers.

3) Borrow an nVidia card from someone. Remove your ATI card and boot from the nVidia card. Once your computer comes up, uninstall the ATI Catalyst driver package. Turn off your computer and switch back to your ATI card. Download the latest Catalyst drivers from http://ati.amd.com.It shouldn't be loading video drivers when entering safemode...

Solve : Windows 7 UAC?

Answer»

If I am logged into an administrator account, and I run a program, does that mean that the program will automatically have admin privileges? Basically, if I run a program on an administrator account, and it does not ask for administrator permission, can it still do things that it couldn't have if it was run on a standard user account, without admin privileges?
I do have UAC turned on.No.
You are logged on as a local administrator, which is different from the built-in administrator.
If your application needs administrator privileges, you should select PROPERTIES and tick the box next to Run as administrator.
if UAC is enabled- you literally cannot log in as an administrator- ever. For EXAMPLE- my account name is BC_Programming, and I am a administrator. However, UAC still shows me the prompts for admin control.

This is because you never actually run as an administrator- what happens, is when you log in, windows strips out the admin privileges from your security token, and you run with the stripped down token. when a program requests admin access, you are given the UAC prompt and if you say yes the NEW process is run under your full security token. All right, thanks. I was just concerned about running programs, now that I don't have SANDBOXIE because of 64 bit Windows 7.
Oh, well. 6gb of memory is worth it.Quote from: you878 on December 20, 2009, 01:36:53 PM

This may be true but you need to tweak the system to your liking,,,,On the other hand, if you enable the built-in Administrator account and log in as it, everything is automatically elevated (this is true with Vista as well).

Solve : KVM Switch with Windows 7?

Answer»

Can not boot an HP quad CORE with Win 7 while connected to a Linkskey 4 PORT KVM switch. The same computer worked fine when running Vista. I now have to boot the HP computer with the V7 22" monitor directly connected. Once booted, I can then connect monitor and computer back to the KVM switch and it will switch ok between two computers. I am hoping there is an option in Win 7 that I can change so it will allow Win 7 to boot up through the KVM switch.Unless you give more details on exactly this system is set up it would be GUESSWORK at best...My system is comprised of two HP computers. ONE is a dual core running XP and the other is a quad core running win 7. The KVM switch is a linkskey LKU-SO4ASK. The single monitor is a 22 inch V7. I hope this is ENOUGH info. If not, be more specific as to what details of my system you would need. ThanksHow long are your KVM cables? If they're too long, the signal may attenuate.

What I mean by "partition editing" is that I used a partition manager to TRANSFER free space from the D Drive to the C Drive. However, the power went off, during the process.

Sorry for not being clear. You can try and boot in safe mode. The drive may have had a "lock" on it during the copy process. Most third party partition manages do soume hard to the file system and if the power goes off it becomes unpredictable. I understand that all the third part programs out there have some warning about the need for caution.

The last resort is to bring start the partition manager again and see if it will correct the problem. Thea's my option. I would try first to boot in safe mode and see if I can take over the locked drive as the system administrator.

Which program?
Some have used the most POPULAR ones and may know the remedy.Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 20, 2009, 10:17:15 PM

Therein lies the problem. Of COURSE your D drive would be inaccessible! Your computer doesn't know where the heck the D drive starts anymore!

Like Patio said, make an image of your C drive (or the entire hard drive if POSSIBLE) and start over. You may have to wipe the entire hard drive and repartition it, so if you can image the entire drive, by all means do it.

This may not be a very good explanation but can you give me some help. I want to delete all of the attachments. Thanks Bob

Solve : Svchost.exe is eating my Memory!?

Well, i have like 8 diffferent processes in the taskmng that's called Svchost.exe, and they are eating a *censored* load of memory, like 200k, anyone can help?

Just push the picture and it will get bigger.

And btw it's pretty newinstalled this computer so i don't got much small programs.

And 1 more question, My computer is a HP Pavalion Eo1105 DV6 Notebook
AMD Athlon x-2 Dual Core QL - 64 (2.10 GHz)
3 GB Ram
240 GB harddrive around 200 gb free
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 Series
32 Bit Vista

So well, my point is it shouldn't really be SLOW, but it really is!
My computer is also getting OVERHEATED often.
I also did a defrag today.

thnx for the help guys.
1) Multiple instances of svchost is normal, though 200K seems excessive. If your SYSTEM is running slowly the first STEP these days is pretty much always a full scan with BOTH your av AND MalwareBytes

2) A system running hot is not related to software. Open the case and blow out any dust. If the system is still running hot check the exact temp and report back

3) Watch your language. This forum is read by people of all ages and nationalities, many of whom will be offended by FOUL language, and many others (myself included) who don't see the need for it on a technical forumI have an svchost consuming 200MB of memory. This is the svchost that is hosting the SuperFetch service.Okay. I'm currently on an XP System so I don't see that.

Solve : "downgrading"...?

Answer»

All it does in the upgrade process is search for a qualifying install of the previous...it doesn't matter what drive/PARTITION is chosen to install to as once qualified it could care less...

This can also be accomplished with no OS installed...at the qualifying prompt all that's required is to insert the OS CD...it'll READ it and continue the install.OK, thanks patio. It just seems a bit odd because you can end up with two OS in that case by using an upgrade VERSION of the OS and installing it on a second HD or different partition. Perhaps this is not an issue with Microsoft because the user would only be running one OS at a time.Yes I wondered that too, but the GUY who's computer it is said thats what he had done. When I looked there def was xp on drive 1 and vista on drive 2 and all he had was vista upgrade version so it stumped me too. I did'nt even know it was possible.
However I have since recovered all his data and wiped both drives and then re-set up xp pro for him.
Thanks everyone who took the time to post.

Can you clarify what you mean? Are you saying the hard drive on the XP MACHINE had multiple partitions but the Vista machine does not? As Allan said, "Partitions have nothing to do with overwriting files." But, if you WANT to add partitions to the Vista machine, that can be done and would be a good idea, especially where important business data is involved.

What type of files were/are you supposed to transfer from one computer to the other? Excel, WORD, an accounting application, etc.?

it used to pick up connections from atleast 2 miles AWAY now it wont pick up my home connection
yes it is wireless.
plz help!Sorry I don't have much to SAY that would help.
Windows 7 does have a recovery/backup method, but you have to start USING it before your add more gadgets to it. The restore feature is not always enough.

You may have to re-install and start over again.
And next time amake a recovery partition and a recovery CD.
You got Windows 7 downloaded from where?nvm i sent it into radio shack, what happened was the restore put it back to were windows seven was only half downloaded.
anyway its FIXED and also some companies (like dell) who have computers that have vista also include a free shipment of windows sevenMx17 Alienware is from Dell.
So you have legal Vista and a Legal Windows 7.
Glad you your gotit fixed.i dont have vista anymore- only windows seven came on disc my vista is gone nowI haven't used the Windows 7 yet but this post could be helpful in the future.
