Solve : MS-DOS & Command Line Batches?

Answer»

I've just got a few questions and need some help with a batch file COMMAND. I need help on displaying a message while running a command at the same time.
(i.e. "ipconfig.exe" and to display "Configuring Your IP Settings"). At the moment I am writing a batch file for a few friends and it renews their ip, cleans all of their disks, defragments their disks, and a few other commands. I want the batch to display an alternate message like the example above. Thanks! Simply echo the message before running the programme.

i.e.
Echo.Configuring Your IP Settings
ipconfig [params]Hey thanks for the reply I just have a few mishaps. My first is that im not sure of the syntax of this command and just to make sure we are on the same page, I want to RUN the command and while the command is running I want the prompt to say whatever. (i.e command: ipconfig; I want it to say Configuring Your IP Settings) Another argument would be for the command to run in the background. For example, if any of you have run the ipconfig command, you see all of the output it spits out like your ip configuration and such. I want this to disapear and just display what I want it to display while running the commmand in the background. Thanks Guys! The syntax is as described earlier. Just enter Echo.followed by the message to be displayed.

You can redirect IPCONFIG to NUL to prevent the output from being displayed.

e.g.
IPCONFIG /ALL >NUL

If you need to wait for the command to complete before the next one starts, use START with the WAIT option.

e.g.
Start "" /MIN /WAIT IPCONFIG /ALL

Type Start /? or Echo /? in a command window to display the syntax.
How do I make the IPCONFIG command totally invisible though? I understand the "nul" command, it makes the output invisible and also the echo command I understand. I just want to KNOW how to make the actual "IPCONFIG" command totally invisible but still run in the background.

">Configuring Your IP Settings" would be the prompt and I want it to run the "IPCONFIG" command while still displaying my message. ALMOST like an ANIMATION effect. If possible what about having it display "Configuring Your IP Settings.""Configuring Your IP Settings..""Configuring Your IP Settings..." Is that possible? Thanks again guys!Redirecting IPCONFIG to NUL will redirect the whole command line to NUL.

Try it. If it doesn't work as you expect, give an example of your batch file.

Solve : How to disable Internet Explorer 8 Error Reporting?

Answer»

I've tried to find this on the internet, yet I'm not having any luck. I need to disable this error reporting as it is reporting misinformation of a site that I go to frequently. It blocks me out of it. I already know that it's not my anti=virus software which is Bitdefender 2010. I have the internet toolbar disabled. Is there a WAY to disable this error reporting in IE8? Here is the message I get when I go to the webpage.

To disable the URL Error Redirection, go to the option page of your toolbar. (I'm not sure how to find this)

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Keep in mind the most IMPORTANT step in the following is creating a backup of the Registry...

That being said:

To disable SENDING crash reports of Internet Explorer, you must do the following:

1. CLICK START, Run
2. In the Open box type the command regedit and click OK to launch the publisher of the registry
3. Go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main
4. For this key, locate the entry DWORD NAMED IEWatsonDisabled. If it does not you can create as follows:
* menu Edition Pull down the Edit menu
* Click New, DWORD Value, type the name of the new DWORD value
(IEWatsonDisabled)
5. Double-click DWORD Value IEWatsonDisabled. and set its value to 0 (in the field Value data)
6. Create a second DWORD value as described in step 4 (steps 4-1 and 4-2), the IEWatsonEnabled name (if it does not already exist). Put the value 0 in the field Value data
7. The changes are taken into account immediately, and error reports IE will no longer be sent to Microsoft engineers.

Solve : How to transfer free space from D Drive to C Drive??

Answer»

Hi there,

I have 7.92GB free space on my C DRIVE, and 70.8GB free space on my D Drive.

Is there a way I can transfer free space from my D Drive to my C Drive? For example, make it so that there is about 40GB free space on the C Drive, and about 30GB free space on my D Drive?

If transferring free space is not possible, what are my options?

Solve : computer does not recognize iPod?

Answer»

the computer does not recognize the iPod after login, the iPod is out of power, but turn on when PLUGIN to the computerdo you have all of the necessary ipod software installed? Is iTunes installed? What iPod do you have (Touch, CLASSIC, Nano, etc.), including the generation if you know?

If you have an iPod wall charger (does not come with the iPod), then charge it using the wall charger. If you do not, then leave the iPod on the computer connected for an extended period of TIME. iPods can get fussy when not totally charged when you connect them to the computer. Also make SURE that you have the iPod software needed (iTunes). It can be obtained from http://www.apple.com/itunes/.

Finally, once iTunes has been started up, see if the iPod is recognized by iTunes.

Hope that mammoth response helps Quote from: ThomasTheXPUser on October 20, 2010, 04:44:31 PM

If you are helping someone, knowing if it is a touch or nano (big difference) can matter in my opinion. Maybe not idk No, it would make no difference at all

Solve : win7 worse internet connection than winxp??

No.Great movie -- Marathon Man --- "Is it safe?"You lose 5-10fps moving from WinXP to Win7 or Vista. WinXP is still the best performance for gaming out of the lot, but that's using DirectX9 (nothing higher). So if your playing an online game like Left 4 Dead your'll notice a drop in performance and wonder what the *censored* happened to the connection. As for the internet speed, WinXP is easier to tweak advance packet settings to optimise to your net cap, Win7 doesn't require this as much, it's more automatic. They will be about the same unless your tweaked. WinXP correctly tweaked net will outperform Win7 net performance, this depends are you attempting to stream, download, upload, or play online games.Quote from: Azzaboi on October 13, 2010, 12:10:40 PM

Where do you come up with this crap?Quote

Why?

Quote
They will be about the same unless your tweaked
lolFrame rate drop is well known and I even benchmarked it myself on the same computer. On a high END performance machine you might not notice, but it's always a 5-10fps drop average on all games (the graphs don't lie). Note we are also talking about DirectX9 vs DirectX10 here not just the OS. WinXP can offically only support DirectX9.0c (or fake DirectX10), Vista and Win7 use DirectX10+.

The internet connection I'm sure is about the same on default settings but I had tweaked the WinXP so it was sending/receiving a better packet size the max my ISP could handle, therefore it streams video and online games better. Also benchmarked.

Windows 7 networking however has greatly improved performance over XP and Vista.

I was highly disappointed moving from WinXP to Win7 on the same computer playing L4D and other online FPS games.
Multitasking and graphic applications are better. It's a lot more pretty, etc, but I rip out most of that additional junk for pure performance and working with a reaction speed where a second can make a huge difference (I get annoyed if i click something and it doesn't instantly happen). Still not as bad as Vista (I've noticed Win7 is pretty much a patched version of Vista). I've used all three. Use Win7 mostly now but still have WinXP when i need it, gaming PURPOSES mostly.

Pure nonsense. You guys are a laugh

Oh noes let's ignore WinXP can run faster than a newer bogged down OS because it's newer it must be better in all ways huh?
Let's ignore the graphical pretty resource hogs differences between them?
Let's ignore that Vista uses almost double the memory use, something which Win7 claims to of fixed?

Let's ignore the footprint / system resources they all use to run?
If Jesus stood before a non-believe they would still deny Him, therefore what's the point of showing?

Pure nonsense? Well if you say so... the varies games/applications, graphic cards, system tweaks, directX, etc, would all make a differences to the benchmark. I use the GTX 275 896MB graphics card myself and noticed a drop average of 5-10 fps in most of the games I play and used ingame graphs, 3D Mark Benchmark, and some other software to test different areas. Same computer at least.

There's a lot more areas, memory, cache, processing, etc... but anyways I thought this TOPIC was internet connection. Apart from the network improving with Win7, I don't know if it's internet connection is better or WORST on default settings... just worst than my WinXP (but that's been tweaked). The most I noticed was that the game 'Left 4 Dead' became a bit more laggy online (same server and ping - not graphics lag but connection) and had to be reconfigured from the original settings (from WinXP). The graphics drop 10fps happened too but unnoticable unless you had the net_graph up to tell you.Quote from: Azzaboi on October 13, 2010, 07:40:46 PM

Nobody said that.
Quote
Let's ignore the graphical pretty resource hogs differences between them?
The DWM is disabled when a full-screen game is running, so it's redundant.
Quote
Let's ignore that Vista uses almost double the memory use, something which Win7 claims to of fixed?
Let's also ignore that Vista has a easily accessible consumer oriented 64-bit version that can access more then 3.5~GB of RAM. Yes, Windows XP x64 can access more as well but then you're not looking at XP, you're looking at Server 2003.
Quote
DirectX 9c can't possibly run faster than the higher graphics quality of DirectX 10 huh?
DX7 Runs faster then DX6 on a card that supports DX7 in hardware. DX8 runs faster then DX7 on a card that supports DX8 in hardware, DX9 runs faster then DX8 on a card that supports DX9 on hardware, so, yes, on a card that supports DX10 via hardware DX10 will be faster. Or, to be more precise, it will give you better performance/visuals ratio. if you have the settings the same, DX10 is faster. Of course, it's important to realize that DX9 and DX10 represent complete shifts in the interface; the same code cannot be easily adapted to run DX10 when it was original created for DX9; many games simply jury-rig DX10 support by munging their DX9 code, so it's slower then a proper pipeline written from scratch with DX10 (or 11) in mind. the DX10 version still has better effects; but the slowness is as a result of merely adapting the DX9 code.
Quote
Let's ignore the footprint / system resources they all use to run?
Redundant. Windows 2000 uses fewer resources then XP; why not evangelize that? Win98SE uses fewer still- what about it? Many newer games are Vista/Win7 only, as well. And it's pointless to buy a gaming computer with like 8GB of RAM and a quad-core and a high-end video card, and use something like Windows XP that was designed for Pentium 3 machines with 32MB of graphics memory and maybe 512MB of RAM. Sure, the fact that it requires less is why it is faster, but at the same time it isn't taking full advantage of the hardware.

Solve : Creating a "shortcut"?

Answer»

How do I create a written "shortcut" in Word for example; such as: typing js for it to 'expand" to Jonathan Smilowitzelwitz. Is this a programming issue, a macro, or is there specific software to accomplish this??

Thanks,
Peter1. In a document, type or paste the word, name or text (e.g. Jonathan Smilowitzelwitz) that you want to appear and select it.
2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect or AutoCorrect Options and then click the AutoCorrect tab.
3. Check the "Replace text as you type" check box, type a two-letter or three-letter abbreviation (e.g. js) in the Replace box, click Add, and then click OK.

This is now stored and from now on, in this and any LATER document, you can type the abbreviation and PRESS the SPACE bar. Word will expand the abbreviation into the FULL name for you. If you ever want to type just js and it gets expanded because you typed a space after it, select the EDIT menu and then click on "Undo AutoCorrect". If you want to edit or delete an entry in the list of AutoCorrect you can do so by going into AutoCorrect Options, clicking the AutoCorrect tab and scrolling to the correct entry in the list that you can see in the lower part of the dialog. The AutoCorrect list is in alphabetical order and already contains many common typing and spelling errors that Microsoft thinks will be useful, and the entries that you add will have an asterisk after them.

Thank You!! Mr. Fish ...........LOL

Solve : screen goes white (windows vista)?

Answer»

When we log on to our computer and are on e-mail or even a website the screen all of a sudden goes all white. This can happen more than once while
we're on. What we do is hit (ctrl/alt/del) at the same time. Then we click on task manager and go to the BOTTOM of the screen and click on the tab for whatever
we were on. This brings the website back up. Any ideas what could cause a sudden white screen? Perhaps its a FIX we can do ourselves? We use Internet
Explorer with Road Runner for the HOME page.
The computer is a lap top, GATEWAY P-series which we have had for about 2 1/2 yrs.

Solve : how to delete folders ??

Answer» HI,

On my pictures folder there are "my music & my videos" folders which i WANT to remove.

how to do that ??

check the attachement.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]You can't.They are not REAL folders.
Your Pictures folder is not a real folder; it is called a library which is a collection of folders.

You can choose which folders are included in the library by clicking "3 locations" under the title "Pictures library". This will bring up a window with a list of folders included in the library. You can add and remove folders from this list. [EDIT: Removing a folder from this list does not ACTUALLY delete the folder; it just REMOVES it from the library.]

For more information about libraries, you can click on "Learn more about libraries" in the window with the list of folders or read this article.

Solve : Need Admin permission to delete desktop shortcut??

Hello, my admin installed some programs today, and now i have a lot of icons on my desktop. I tried to delete them, but it says you need to confirm this operation. Its just a shortcut, not a program. So why can't i delete it? Is there a way to do it without admin rights? and i cant make it hidden either ... Help?Check where the shortcut is stored.

Is it in the Public folder (shared) or the User folder?
Public Folder: C:\Users\Public\Desktop
User Folder: C:\Users\(Your Account Name)\Desktop
or
Public Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
User Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\(Your Account Name)\Desktop

Public folder are VISIBLE to everyone's account - you will need Admin permission to delete.
User folder are only visible to that user - you should have User permission to delete.

If you need admin access and can't ask the Admin (for some unknown reason), Vista is very easy to break into to the admin account or create a duplicate (they are even dumb enough to allow anyone guest access to a hidden admin account if your've got the command prompt enabled). Yes, its in the public folder. HMM, i can delete the pictures and videos in the public folder without Administrator rights but not these shortcuts.Probably you can't delete those shortcuts.

But if you GO into safe mode, you can try deleting them there. If nothing works, ask your admin to delete them for you.

Solve : monitor does not come on?

Answer»

disconnected the MONITOR from my comp. and when I reconnected again it does not come on also the key board is not recognized .

Help
Sounds LIKE a driver issue for the keyboard, hard to say for the monitor. What type of monitor is it? Did you unplug it whilst the computer was on? Or plug it back in when the monitor was on? Do you have access to another monitor that you can test?
Also for the keyboard how is it plugged into the computer USB or PS/2 port? Are you sure you did not break any PINS for that matter...? If you just disconnected it and OS or computer was working properly, then you should not be in this situation. Unless there is something ELSE that you should provide to be more clear.

Solve : Missing/Corrupted iastor.sys in Vista?

HP 550 w/ (best recollection) approx 2G prcssr & 4M RAM. 32-bit Vista Home Basic SP1 (can't GET to Vista display to see if updated). It's had McAfee or Symantec anti-virus loaded for college usage. CompUSA purchase-July '09. LCD screen replaced @ HP-summer 2010. This laptop played fine for 1 yr w/ daughter at college. Came back from HP after screen change & daughter advised it stopped working within a mo. After replacing blown ext pwr supply/charger to get pwr, I consistently get Vista not loading with: "Win failed to load because critical sys driver missing or corrupted: File:\ $WINDOWS.~BT\Windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys"

Have 3 original DVDs: OS DVD, App & Driver Recovery DVD, & Supplemental SW (trial Office '07). There is an "iastor.sys" file on the 'Supplemental' DVD.

From reading online/your FORUM, it appears possible/probable virus possibility? I should copy the Supplemental iastor.sys file & attempt to replace/install on the laptop? If so, how to load /replace the missing/corrupt original file?

Thanks for your forum. iastor.sys is your hard drive controller driver.

Copy iastor.sys file from supplemental DVD to USB drive.
Plug the USB stick to bad computer.

Solve : How do I resolve C Drive condition on Vista??

Answer»

Hi. I bought an IOEMEGA HDD external portable hard drive to resolve C drive disk full condition. I have connected it to my laptop, but I do not know how to empty the C drive into it. OR use it as the default C drive since all programs automatically go to the C drive.
Can some one please help? I have CLEANED the C drive several times but this does not resolve it?
Does vista have a C drive I can buy and attach or something?More info on what exactly your trying to accomplish here...There's a lot of ways to free disk space and move / backup files. Here's a few to get you started, you can do either one, a few or all of them if you WISH, but if unsure it's best to leave it.

Recycle Bin
When you don't want a file anymore you select and 'delete' it right.
On your desktop you should have a 'Recycle Bin', deleted files first end up there (to recover if your made a mistake) - this is a space hog.
If your sure you do want any of the files there, make sure it's empty to free up disk space:
Right-clicking 'Recycle Bin' icon and select 'Empty Recycle Bin'
Under right-clicking there's also 'Properties', there you can set the 'Size to be used:' to around 200MB (whatever you want) or if keen and know when you delete something you want it gone disable the recycle bin all together. This will cut down on space used when recycling files.

Web Browser Cache Size
On Internet Explorer or any other web-browser you use find under the Tools > Internet Options > 'Delete Browser History' frees up space by clearing out the cached webpages, etc.
Under that settings you can also set the 'Disk Space to be used:' to around 50MB (whatever you want). This will cut down on space used when caching websites (note caching makes them load faster the next time if you visit the same site again and again, but good to clean up now and then).

Disk Cleanup Tool (Quicker basic option which also cleans the ones above)
Start > Run > type 'cleanmgr' (without the quotes) or Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk CleanUp.
Select 'Drive C:\' and tick what you want to clean up.

System Restore Space
Windows Vista reserves a whopping 15% of your Hard Drives for System Restore (or 30% of free space, whichever is smaller), that's can be almost 75GB out of a 500GB HD! This space is not reserved, but will be taken in 300MB chunks each time a restore point is created.
Under Start > Control Panel > 'Backup and Restore' > click 'create a restore point or change settings.'
Under the 'available disks' HEADING, uncheck all entries. Confirm and hit 'ok'. This removes previous restore points but frees a lot of room if you have a lot of them. Do this only if your computer is running fine and you won't need them.

If you do not want to disable system restore entirely, you have a couple of options. First, you can clean out all previous restore points, recouping disk space both by deleting existing restore files and causing system restore to recalculate its usage based on the current fullness of your hard drive. To do this, follow the instructions above to disable system restore, then click the 'apply' button instead of the 'ok'. Immediately recheck any entries you removed, then click 'ok.' You have now recreated Vista's system restore settings, starting out with a clean slate. The second option would be to manually alter the amount of drive space system restore can eat up (unforunity unlike WinXP, Vista hides this option under 'vssadmin list shadowstorage' (let me know if you want and I'll tell you how, but it's more advance).

Moving files from HD to HD
If you go Start > My Computer.
Your have hard drives listed, C:\ and your external hard drive if connected, etc. You don't want to move the Operating System or any system files onto an external HD. Instead find your documents, music, videos, downloads, application installers, etc (storage files), on your C:\, use CTRL+Click to select multiple files at a time and right-click the folder(s) or file(s), select 'Cut' (or use QUICK key CTRL+X). Open your External Hard Drive and right-click, select 'Paste' (or use quick key CTRL+V).

Hope that will help you out. Any questions feel free to ask. What's the make and model of your computer? Do you know the total capacity of its hard drive? Is the hard drive PARTITIONED? How large is C? If Vista came with your computer, I would guess you have at least an 80GB hard drive. So, what's taking up all the space? Have you installed lots of programs? Do you lots of photos, music, etc. on your hard drive?

Quote

Does vista have a C drive I can buy and attach or something?
This makes no sense whatsoever. Your OS, Vista, needs to be on the internal hard drive. If your hard drive is truly getting full with installed programs, the solution is a larger internal hard drive. If user files, files you've saved on your hard drive, such as photos, music, videos, word processing, etc., are taking up a lot of space and if moving them to an external hard drive would allow you to continue using your internal hard drive for your OS, then getting an external hard drive for those user files (not your OS and programs) is another option.

Solve : Why isn't my avast antivirus not working??

Answer»

Hi -
My security center says my virus protection not found. I KNOW I have avast antivirus free program because I installed it and reinstalled it. Everything was WORKING fine until I did a back up and a restore. As far as I know everything worked except the restore took away all my restore points so I can not do a restore back before my trouble. Any idea of how to fix my virus protection? Thanks BobBob, that is what happens when you do a restore.
You have answered your own question.
Do not do a restore beyond the point where a program was installed.
Yup have to install, uninstall and install again to get it right.

If that does not work, you have do switch to another free virus program. Or buy the program.

Don't gripe about free AV programs. If you do not pay, you get no support. This issue goes away when you have a paid version of the program. To prevent abuse of the free OFFER, they limit your ability to re-install the free software.

Geek-9pm -
Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying. I use free programs because I don't use the computer for anything important - just e-mail, weather, stock markets, etc. I installed and reinstalled avast antivirus but it is still not recognised. Can you suggest another antivirus program I can use? Thanks BobGeek-9pm -
Now everything is fine. I'm not sure what happened but apparently it was your suggestion to uninstall and reinstall. Apparently it took a LITTLE while for things to happen. Thanks to you I am back in business. Bob Most programs need to WRITE to registry when installing. So if you did a system restore to before the said program was installed, it probably won't work properly without a fresh reinstallation.2x3i5x -
Thanks for your reply. My problem is now cleared up and I seemed to be OK. Bob

Really? (on both counts) Learn something new every day.

Normally, when I see the prices of computers on VARIOUS OEMS' websites, they usually (but not always) exclude the monitor and other peripherals. There's an old saying that's something like this: Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and he'll never go hungry.

Are you asking us to give you a fish or to teach you how to fish? We'll (or at least I'll) be happy to teach you, but we (or at least I) WILL NOT give you a fish.

In any case, I sure hope your teacher didn't give you that question worded exactly like that. Otherwise, that's sloppy and difficult for anyone to answer, especially if the teacher made the mistake of calling the computer tower/chassis the "CPU," as the "CPU" is really the processor, or Central Processing unit

this it what the question says
you have taken holiday PHOTOS with your digital camera and downloaded the photos to your computer.your friend wants copies of two photos printed on your colour printer. explain the interaction that will TAKE place between the camera(input device) the CPU and the printer (output device)

sorry about that i miss worded it
and id like to be taught how to fish that way you actually get sumwere in life "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day"....
Teach a man to fish and he'll drink all your beer and not talk to the wife til it's too late...

Disregard the above post - your problem has nothing to do with Firefox.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new SW, virus, error, etc)?my most recent thing installed was Microsoft OFFICE but these problems began OCCURRING 2-3 days ago and office was installed 2 weeks ago

Solve : Win 7 slow shutting down?

Answer»

Hi,

I've recently replaced the harddrive in my Alienware M15X Notebook and have just finished installing everything back onto it. However, I am experiencing a slow shutdown now (about 2 mins) when it was pretty quick before - even when it was full of crap.

I have found a previous POST where the advice was as follows:

Make sure "CLEAR pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

However, my system doesn't have a 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' entry or a 'HungAppTimout' entry at all!

The 'WaitToKillServiceTimout' entry was set to 20000 so I have changed it to 2000.

HELP!!!!

Could it be SOMETHING to do with a driver not installed correctly or a missing driver? (I got the drivers from my driver disc that came with the Laptop and on the Dell website).
HI,

Driver disks are often outdated drivers so the Dell website has UPDATED drivers. Be sure you have the LATEST installed, especially Chipset. Chipset drivers are often overlooked with new installs of windows.I downloaded the latest drivers from the Dell website. The thing is, before my hard drive broke I had the older drivers and I never had a problem shutting down.Don't worry about the registry entries you don't have. On a new install I'm more concerned with WHY you have the problem than with registry changes.

1) As suggested above, did you install all drivers including the chipset driver?
2) Are you experiencing ANY other anomalies with the system?
3) Try a clean boot (msconfig - selective startup - disable everything from loading and reboot). Then shut down. What happens?

Solve : Windows 7 can't find signed drivers??

Answer»

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a computer I just built. I know all the parts are compatible.

During installation, when it looks for a storage device, it says it gives me this message:

No signed device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click ok.

I downloaded all the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website onto a flash drive and tried again. Still no luck. Then I tried a CD; it still refuses to find the drivers.

Does ANYBODY know why it's doing this? Or how I can disable driver signing before I install it?If you are running the windows 7 intaller on ANOTHER windows like xp or VISTA that is the problem.

Try booting from the cd rom.

if the problem continue make sure that your hd is VISIBLE in the BIOS, and enable the option IDE MODE, SATA MODE or similar.

Solve : Sleep vs. Hibernate?

Answer»

I've always been a huge fan of the "hibernate" MODE for my laptop that I use especially while commuting daily. My new Acer with Windows 7 has a "sleep" mode as well. However, I"m not sure the difference between "sleep" and "hibernate." Would anyone care to explain the difference?Google!
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions

Quote

Sleep is a power-saving state that allows a computer to quickly RESUME full-power operation (typically WITHIN several seconds) when you want to start working again. Putting your computer into the sleep state is like pausing a DVD player—the computer immediately stops what it’s doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working.

Hibernation is a power-saving state designed primarily for laptops. While sleep puts your work and settings in memory and draws a small amount of power, hibernation puts your open documents and programs on your hard disk, and then turns off your computer. Of all the power-saving states in Windows, hibernation uses the least amount of power. On a laptop, use hibernation when you know that you won't use your laptop for an extended period and won't have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time.

Hybrid sleep is designed primarily for desktop computers. Hybrid sleep is a combination of sleep and hibernate—it puts any open documents and programs in memory and on your hard disk, and then puts your computer into a low-power state so that you can quickly resume your work. That way, if a power failure OCCURS, Windows can restore your work from your hard disk. When hybrid sleep is turned on, putting your computer into sleep automatically puts your computer into hybrid sleep. Hybrid sleep is typically turned on by default on desktop computers.

Solve : Installing Windows 7 on an HP laptop?

Answer»

I want to install Windows 7 on the wifes Laptop. It's an HP Pavilion 1225. New last year. The main question i have is, these HP's come loaded to the gills with HP "proprietary" programs and stuff.... If I simply "upgrade", all that crap remains. However, if I do a clean install, all of it goes away. Is there anything they install, that it really needs??? I don't think so, but with all the stuff on there,,,, it's hard to know/tell?!?!?! Am I safe dumping it all, and GOING clean?? That would be MY preference, but I want to be sure!!
Hankpersonally, the first thing I do when I get a new PC is install a clean copy of windows to it. It's not that difficult to visit the vendors site and DOWNLOAD the proper drivers (which are the only "proprietary" things you really need).

Of course, this means you won't have any included applications, like Office, if they came with the laptop. That's what I thought, Mine was a custom built CLONE, nothing on it but what I WANTED. Never had to "redo" one of these HP's with all the garbage on it. So I'll do the clean install. "Pre installed stuff isn't an issue. Thanks, HankMake sure, your computer is Win 7 compatible: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b544e90-7659-4bd9-9e51-2497c146af15Trust me she won't miss any of the pre-installed if you were to do a wipe and a clean install of 7...

Just make sure you grab all the machine's appropiate drivers from the manuf. site before starting.

Solve : Vista not working...?

After using the tools given from Windows, and using CCleaner to clean off my computer/temporary files/disk, my vista stopped working.
It started at taking a long time to START up... Like 10 minutes, stuck at a blank screen after login.
Now, it won't turn on at all.

I don't know where to find my startup disk. I am restoring everything now, though it'll take hours to finish.
This is the vista my mother uses for her work, (I am 14) and I am getting blamed for breaking the computer.

That is hardly productive...

You sound like you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I would advise to slow down a little and not be so DRASTIC.
The 'startup disk' may be a partition on your drive and if not we can help...I'm not sure that a full re-install is the answer though.

Solve : Windows won't do anything after I login?

Answer»

My registry, I think, is extremely corrupt do to several factors (one of those being trying to clean it with a registry cleaner)

I used my computer as normal anyway. LOTS of BSODs but I just kept cleaning and cleaning and what not. Now Windows, after I login to username, is telling me to reinstall windows.

I clicked on "more help online" so I can navigate the web. I opened Google docs and discovered I could upload some of my important data there as a backup.

What should I do? Is there another WAY to get data on an external thumb drive or something without going through Windows before I reinstall EVERYTHING? ALSO, how do I reinstall windows as I have no disk?NEVER use registry cleaners. NEVER.

Try system restore. If that doesn't work, you may be RELEGATED to a format and reinstall.

It's path is "... system32\wuapp.exe STARTMENU" but when I go into system 32, there's no wuapp folder.Well after a little more digging, I found the solution. I ran system file CHECKER (sfc /scannow) from the command prompt----that was it!

Solve : problems?

Answer»

no signal to monitor, keyboardand mouse does not power computer is turning onAnd what might have happened prior to this when everything was running fine ? ?

More details please...playing wow, everything was fine logged off wow lost everything but still had pwr to computerIf you want intelligent responses you need to provide DETAILED information about your situation, not ONE sentence posts.Normally, I get frustrated as a technician when people aren't providing enough information, despite having to tell them "DUDE, WE NEED MOAR INFOZ!!!"

...until I realize that the majority of people will do that because they just don't know what information to provide. Of course some are being just plain lazy, but still...

When my car has problems, I try to provide as much information as POSSIBLE, but I'll still get the occasional frustrated look from the mechanic's face as if I'm withholding some critical piece of info when, in reality, I don't know what he's asking for.

In any case, sometimes it's best to start with what the person has, even if there's five bazillion directions to choose from. Eventually they'll get frustrated with being run around in circles and then, SUDDENLY, the right piece of information comes out (and, the whole time, we'll think "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THIS SOONER?!!!!").

So...

imorganji...do this:

A:
1) Unplug the black power cord from the back of your computer tower.
2) Wait 60 seconds.
3) Plug back in.
4) Turn back on.

Are you getting anything on the screen now? If yes, then CHANCES are you probably had a power spike or power outage, and your computer just need to be unplugged for a bit. If no, then we move on to B:
1) Acquire a spare video card somehow (borrow from a friend, use one from an old PC, purchase one if you have the funds, etc.)
2) Switch video cards out.

Anything yet? If yes, then your video card had likely gone bad. If no, then we move onto C:
1) Remove any other expansion cards in your PC, if any. These could be sound cards, TV tuner cards, network cards, etc.

Anything? If yes, then one of those cards had likely gone bad. Put one at a time back in to determine which one is the culprit. If no, then D:
1) Unplug your hard drives and optical (CD, DVD, BD) drives from the motherboard and power supply.
2) Power on the PC. Of course you're not going to get into Windows, but at least if you get something on the screen, that'll tell you something.

Did you get anything on the screen? If yes, then bad hard drive (or bad IDE or SATA cable). If no, then E:
1) If you have multiple sticks of RAM in your PC, remove all but one.

Anything yet? If yes, then you have one or more bad sticks of RAM (or a bad slot in the motherboard). Put each stick of RAM back in, one at a time, to determine the offender. If no, then F:
1) Acquire a spare power supply somehow (borrow from a friend, use one from an old PC, purchase one if you have the dough, etc.)
2) Switch power supplies out.

Anything yet? If yes, then you have a bad power supply. If no, then we're down to the CPU and motherboard. If you can somehow get a hold of a spare CPU, great! Eliminate that from the equation. If that's not the problem, then it's the motherboard.

Solve : A Disk Read Error Has Occurred - Vista Startup?

Answer»

So...

Yesterday I downloaded & installed Winamp Media Player and a .flac converter. After installation Spybot popped up giving me the option of allowing or denying a registry change associated with Winamp. I assumed that the registry change would need to take place to allow the new software to function correctly and so allowed it.

Bad move.

Several hours later I came back to my computer (I'd left it on) at which point it completely froze up so, I cold rebooted it.

Second bad move (I am aware cold booting is not a good thing, but I've never seen anything like this happen before)

Now on startup my computer goes through the normal process until it gets to the PAGE where it offers the option to launch recovery. After the countdown is complete I am greeted by the message 'A Disk Read Error Occurred - Press Ctrl - Alt - Del to Reboot'.

So restart it I did to find the same message awaiting me, again and again and again. I cannot access safe mode, pressing F8 results in 'A Disk Read Error Occurred - Press Ctrl - Alt - Del to Reboot'

I am running Windows Vista 32bit SP2, any help would be most appreciated. On MONDAY I'll take my laptop (HP T5870s) into UNI and see if I can get any help there from the IT department. Failing that I can take it to a professional IT Repair shop... but what with being a student I'd rather not.

Many Thanks

I found that with my laptop, when this sort of 'freezing' happened, the remedy was to remove BOTH the mains lead AND the battery. If you haven't done this, worth a try. It is possible that installing Winamp and the flac converter did not cause your problem. These things could be symptoms of a failing hard disk.

Hmm... possibly.

Ok,

If I hit F11 for recovery the laptop takes about five minutes to enter the recovery process, upon which it displays a blue screen ultimately telling me I have a hard disk failure, possibly due to software recently installed, and that I should make sure said software is installed correctly. Unfortunately this is impossible as I cannot access windows.

If at startup I hit Ctrl-S and go into the BIOS setup and run a Hard Drive Self Test (as suggested by HP - www.hp.com/go/techcenter/support) it results in almost immediate failure and recommends I invest in a new hard drive.

Is this salvageable? Only I have a LOT of work on this computer that I need and also my version of Windows (Vista Home Premium) came pre-installed so a disk format is kind of out of the question (if indeed that would even work)

Many ThanksSTOP using it immediately ! !

Then grab 1 of these:

2.5"laptop to IDE converter...this will allow you to hook that drive up to any working desktop to hopefully retrieve your data...

NOTE Do not try to burn the data as this is more taxing on the drive....copy it to the desktop HDD and burn it later.Quote from: ChocoBear111 on October 02, 2010, 09:31:16 AM

You are in denial. Your "possibly" should be "definitely". As you have yourself found...

That disk is not even on its LAST legs. It has passed that stage.

You saw this with your own eyes.

The disk has failed. Terminally.

Good advice! The only thing possible.

In my opinion, no.

Sorry to be harsh, but you had a LOT of work that you didn't back up.

Quote

You may be able to buy a recovery CD from HP that would, in conjunction with a new hard drive, bring your machine back to the state it was in at the time of purchase.

Quote
so a disk format is kind of out of the question (if indeed that would even work)

That disk won't take a format, which in any case would make it blank. (I know that when people say "reformat" they generally mean "format the disk and reinstall the operating system")

The only, remote, possibility is that you could try removing the disk and mounting it as a slave in another computer and run some kind of data rescue program just in case anything is recoverable. The cost of this can range from zero or low (a helpful friend) or medium (computer repair shop) to high (specialist data recovery company dismantles the drive under lab conditions and reassembles it with new mechanical and electronic parts in a clean chamber) and there is no GUARANTEE that you would get anything off it.
hahahaha as much as i hate my laptop for doing this that last post made me laugh no end!!

cool, have invested in an IDE cable and will buy a new hard drive asap. Is W7 more advisable as an OS than vista?

For future reference whilst this adapter only cost a couple of quid it was completely useless to me as there is no way it can actually connect my hard drive up to another desktop.

I have purchased windows 7 and a replacement hard drive and am sending the broken drive off to a friend of mine who is going to try to extract the important files i need off of it. Over the last few days I also ran Acronis 10 from the BIOS to try and recover the data that way, but this failed either due to corruption or the fact that I was not signed in as a user. Either way I'll know for sure soon.

Thanks for your helpThe adapter hooks up to any standard IDE ribbon cable....

Solve : I have lost a document within Word. I mean LOST?

Answer»

My colleague sent me a version via e-mail of a paper we are working on. As usual, I opened it and it appeared in Word. As I worked on it (for hours I might add) I would frequently click on the 'save' icon. Everything was going well and progressing as usual. Then when I wanted to send her the paper back, I saved once more and closed the document, as it cannot be sent if it is open. I went to 'attachments' as usual and THE PAPER WAS NOT THERE in the documents list. I then dug around in the computer like MAD to try to find it, to no avail. It HAS to be somewhere, right? Where was it saving to? Any help will be so deeply appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

Joseereopen it from words recent document list, and then save it somewhere outside the temp folder. As I said, I looked everywhere for it. I wish it were somewhere as obvious as 'recent documents.' Besides, with MS 7, there is no specific 'recent documents' like with earlier versions. There is just 'documents' to click on.

Can you help for real? This is serious.

Thanks.if you can't find it thru recent document list, you might do a search for it if you remember the file name (windows explorer or start menu should have search function depending on what windows you use).

File should exist, I would think if you're saving it. Next time, save a 2nd copy to different folder or a flash drive or something in case. Thanks. I tried that. My colleague's computer had just crashed before she sent me the file. Could her computer somehow have saved the file in some funky format and then I inadvertently saved this error everytime I saved on my end? It really seems to have disappeared. I am near tears.Quote from: NY gal on October 04, 2010, 04:07:42 PM

Open word.

in Word 2003:

Select the file menu. Right above the "Exit" Item there is a list of recent items. The top item in that list will be the most recently used.

In word 2007:

The recent documents are listed when you click the "office button" (or whatever it is called) in the upper left corner of the application.

Windows 7 is unrelated to word. Although I did omit the posessive apostrophe, when I said "words recent document list" I meant that the documents list was part of word- not windows.

Another option (using win7) could be to use the start->Search and type "recent documents" One of the items that pops up should be labelled "Recent Documents", which may list what you are after.

I'm sorry? What does this mean? What I stated before you didn't FOLLOW and essentially dismissed offhand as "already tried" so suddenly I'm not "helping for real" come on now, I know that working on something for hours and then discovering it may be lost forever is somewhat jarring (try working on something for 3 years only to have it and it's backups destroyed by a number of coincidences, not pleasant either let me tell you).

Despite your concerns, chances are, the file does exist on your disk somewhere; you can't save a file to nothing. If you downloaded a file from an attachment it will generally be saved somewhere in your documents folder, or, if you are using a browser based mail, to your temporary internet files with a randomly generated name. Outlook (or IE, or Firefox- whichever program you are using) then discovers the program used to open the file (say, for word, DOC or DOCX) and says "hey, word, open this file, it's called jdkfskdlfs.docx in the temp folder!" and word opens it. Now, when you save the file, it saves to that temp folder with the semi-random name.

Note the following: If you have run a disk cleanup in the MEANTIME, the file may be deleted (as it resides in the temp folder). It might only delete .tmp files though, I'm not sure.so sorry that you have lost this file. I was workinng on my book for two years and the computer downloaded a virus from an email and I lost the lot and had to start again. However, in this case, I would take the computer to a good IT person and let them do the WORK. It sounds as if you need the help of an expert.

babs

Solve : coprocessor?

Answer»

Hi, I've bought a new dell laptop recently with Windows 7.

However when I've turned on windows, it says that one of my coprocessor's DRIVER is not installed??? What does that mean? Is it something like one of my CPU in the "dual core" SYSTEM is not installed?

thanksYou bought a laptop with Windows 7 already on it?that's a very strange error message-

a Coprocessor was an available add-on for very old PCs, up to the 486SX around 1994- since then the Coprocessor, also called a FPU, has been a part of the CPU itself rather then a separate unit; so I cannot really explain the message, myself.Quote from: kpac on August 06, 2009, 09:18:23 AM

Are you indeed running Windows 7?

Did it COME installed, or are you testing Windows 7?
Couldn't have come installed since it's not shipping til Oct 22nd...hahahhaaha, sorry for the misunderstanding, mine is vista, I was testing out the trial windows 7 on another computer and got it confused. Only realised my mistake when i READ all your replies.

I'm trying to find the error message again, can't seem to find it anymore.did a LITTLE more searching:

Solve : HP m9000 crashed, used recovery disk, found secondary drive relabeled as c: Help!?

Answer»

I had a massive crash on my desk to HP m9000. I downloaded a recovery disk only to find that a secondary hard drive had been renamed to c:. There appears to still be a boot drive listed but does not do anything. How can I rename the seondary drive back to e: where it belongs? Has C: drive been damaged beyond recovery
I am running AVG free virus protection but the e-mail scanning quit a couple days before the crask. HELP!!!!Where did this recovery CD get DLoaded from ? ?The recovery file was downloaded from NeoSmart Technologies.Enter BIOS, and see how many drives are listed there.I don't know about BIOS. The recovery disk gives me a look at the drive structure. It shows a C drive which was my E drive and a X drive which I think was the old D drive. Using this feature let me copy and save all on the old E drive. I can get to the ommand level. Is it possble to reidentify the now C drive back to its original E drive and maybe that will unover the old C drive? I don't think the old C drive is dead brcause I can still see the old D which is now labeled X drive. How was this setup prior to this ? ?
Be specific.

A crash should NOT jumble drive assignments....what have you done so far ? ?The computer was as sold by HP with a 300G C drive with a small partician as drive D and a secondary 300 g drive as drive E. I had made no modifications from s delivered. I am going to disonnect the seonary drive and see what happens.
Quote

Be specific.
I DISCONNECTED the old C drive and nothing changed. I still had what looked like the old partition with the boot info labeled X drive. I then disconnected the secondary drive and the only drive found was the x drive. Reonnected all and back to crashed STATE.

Solve : External Harddrive unseen?

Answer»

OK.. for some reason, i am unable to see my External harddrive in the my computer thing, i see its light is on, but i still cant see it, i could before. could this have something to do with the poweroutage we had yesterday? I tried RESTARTING my computer, still it isn't seen, i tried TURNING my computer completely off, still unseen.. could it be because its fried? [which i am deeply hoping isn't as it has a lot of my things inside of it.

could it just be the wires attaching it to the computer that's the problem, and and that the hardrive itself is fine?I WOULD try the manufactures web site to make sure that your HDD doesnt have an "Auto Install" if so you can try downloading/run it (the .exe) and see if the HDD SHOWS up. Came across the same prob but on a XP might WORK for vista. Second I would try a new cable... Right click My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management...
How is it reported there ? ?

Solve : HP laptop continually restarts?

Answer»

I bought my HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop about 9 months ago, a refurbished model from Buy.com, and up until now, it has worked fine. Today, I left my computer idling while I was working on my desktop, and when I went back to it, the screen was black and I couldn't do anything. I held the power button for a few seconds to let it restart, but it restarted to a black screen, with some of the lights on the keyboard coming on and what I think is the hard drive going, but then immediately shut down again. Not enough time to even ENTER safe mode or anything like that. After a few seconds, it started up again, only to do the same thing. This would've gone on forever, so I took the battery out, and tried it on AC power. The same thing happened when I powered the computer on again, so I was forced to disconnect it from AC power as well. I've also tried disconnecting the power and battery and holding the power button down for 30 seconds, but this didn't help. I've also tried reseating the memory to no avail, THOUGH I MIGHT try this a couple more times just to make sure. Help?

Specs:
HP Pavillion dv9000
3 gigs of RAM
250 gig hard drive
AMD Turion 2.00 ghz dual core (something like that)
Integrated Nvidia 7100M GRAPHICS card
Vista Home PremiumLet it cool down for a while, and see, if it'll start. The laptop is pretty cool now, but it still won't properly start up. I've also now tried using each RAM stick separately and in each slot, none of which has worked, so I don't think it's a RAM problem.Did you actually try to start it in Safe Mode?I repeatedly hit F8 once I powered it on, and it didn't work. No text ever appears on the screen before it reboots itself, just black.Do you have any warranty on it?No, the 90 day warranty has long run out unfortunately. At this point, I'm thinking it might be a problem with the power supply or something else serious like that. How much would it cost to have hardware inside a laptop repaired/replaced?It's impossible to say, since we have no clue what's wrong.

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't PROVIDE any diagnostic tool.Quote from: SunflashX on August 04, 2009, 08:30:17 PM

Tried starting with each module separately already. I can't run any diagnostics because I can't get past the blank screen.Quote

Most likely, it's not RAM then. BTW, memtest creates bootable CD.

Run HD diagnostic, which will create bootable CD as well. This way, we'll see, if the CD will give you any screen display, and if so check your HD.

Solve : laptop doesnt recognise when connected by ethernet cable?

wi-fi works but not my reg connection....

ask for me to set up a connection...? should pick it up auto right?

ms vista home sp1
amd athlon 64x2 dc processor tk-53
1.0 gb ram, ati radeon xpress series
dell 1501

Make sure your drivers are up to date on the NIC, also you might want to update Vista to SP2...
Another is to make sure you dont have the Static IP and Config muffed up on the connection...
Let me know if you need some more helpSearch for network and sharing centre then go into manage wireless connections. If your router is not there click on Add and add said router.OK to be more specific go to CONTROL PANEL then to NETWOK AND SHARING CENTER then to NETWORK CONNECTIONS. FIRST!!!!!!!! Make sure the device in ENABLED (right click on the ethernet connection then click ENABLE if it is not an option then move on). At this point you should see your two connections, one being Ethernet and one being wireless. open the ethernet one... click once on the Internet Protocol 4 and then click on properties. Make sure the "obtain IP automaticlay" is checked. (this is assuming you use DHCP on your router or let the router set its self up i.e. using the CD it comes with) then save or click apply/ ok.

If it still doesn't work then try to update your NIC card soooo.....
Do the same as above BUT DONT click on the Internet Protocol 4 just click the Configure button,
then click on the driver tab then update driver... (you will need to connect to the internet for this so your your wireless) then click SEARCH automatically.... and who-la one of these two should fix your problem IF NOT THEN you can leave a post here or leave a message for me and I will help you out further.

Solve : Can no longer recognize files and flash drives?

Answer»

I am running Vista on a Dell Inspiron 5305. I like to DOWNLOAD embroidery (jpeg) FILES but now it tells me that the file is empty when I try to open it. It is the same way if the files are emailed to me. If emailed I can go to my friends house and GET my files there. A few months ago I moved a lot of documents to a flash drive and until this week it recognized the files. Now it tells me that the file is empty. Also this week the file I CREATED for downloading my designs has COMPLETELY disappeared from my desktop. I don't have a clue what is going on. I have spy sweeper, Malware bytes' anti malware, Skybot search and destroy, CW shredder running. I have been told by various people to put these on my computer.
Is there a way to go back to what my computer was when i first got it?Can you be more specific? Do you get an error message?
