Solve : My computer BSOD's frequently?

Answer»

I've been experianceing bsod's frequently ive had xp for a long time it worked real well and then i made move to vista and it kept giving me bsod's so i got frustrated after a while and decided to try windows 7 and if problem continued to go back to xp.

well the problem continued and i would like to know why and if its fixable before i decide to go back to xp because i have been enjoying windows 7.
below is my dxdiag

plzzz help.

[attachment deleted by admin]Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump FOLDER.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
[Vista users] You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.
here you go

[attachment deleted by admin]There are several errors coming from volmgrx.sys, but there are also couple of errors coming from win32k.sys.
Was your move to Vista done by clean INSTALL, or upgrade? Was legit Vista DVD used?

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

it just closed without saying anything? and it was clean install. and yes it was windows 7 though i went from vista to windows 7 and both os's had this problem 1. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

2. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll CREATE bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to DISC" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.alright sir ill try that thanks for helping me man ill post results when finished. this would make since about ram because i just added another stick RIGHT before this happened i didnt think of that til nowKeep us posted...

Solve : Can't fix Disk Read Error, tried everything I've read?

Answer»

I built a PC back in January and its been running great ever since. Never had any HANGUPS, freezes, or other issues with the build. Two weeks ago my computer froze unexpectedly and upon restart I received a disk read error. I TRIED several tips on the internet to fix it, and eventually the HDD stopped being detected by even the BIOS. I bought a new HDD and reinstalled vista 64 ultimate and it's been running fine for about a week. After receiving the disk read error again I updated my BIOS and it seemed to fix the problem for a few days. Last night it happened again.

I've read that this could be caused by a bad HDD, issues with Vista, bad memory, or an overheating issue. When I run SpeedFan and other temp tools, my computer runs at max at 45-50C under load. My PSU is still cool, as are all of the components within the case.

It starts to freeze in WoW, but at random intervals. It might be an hour, it might be 4 hours before I have any issues. I've also had the problem when the computer was IDLING in vista. I check the temperature of the system regularly while playing my games, and I doubt that is the issue.

As this is a clean HDD with a clean install of vista and runs cool, I'm beginning to think it may be a memory issue. The following are my system components:

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Ultimate (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.,LTD
System Model: MS-7388
BIOS: Default System BIOS - updated to current version
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ (2 CPUs), ~3.1GHz
Memory: 4094MB RAM - I have four 1g sticks Corsair
Page FILE: 1463MB used, 6903MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
Graphics CARD: Two HD4830 Sapphire cards in Crossfire
HDD: 160g Seagate

All of my drivers are updated. What is the best way to determine what memory could be bad? Just pulling out a stick at a time? Please lend any assistance you can, this error is driving me nuts!

Thanks!

To test the HDD DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site.

To test the RAM DLoad MemTest and create a bootable CD with the .iso...
Let it run at least 2 hours without interruption.
Any errors at all and you have a bad stick of RAM...Well, I've run memtest with different combinations of two of my four sticks and I've found no errors. I did have memtest freeze once after running for about a half hour but that was it. What I find is odd is that when I get the disk read error with 2 sticks of RAM in, I can swap out those two sticks for my other two sticks and it'll start up fine and run for a few hours before slowing down and eventually crashing again.

Could this be a problem with the motherboard?Quote

We suggest this stuff for a reason....
Do this before we assume it's the MBoard.

Your guess is as good as mine! I am referring to the "file" drop down menu. Also, cannot find the "edit" drop down menu. Where are they located on the Vista version of Microsoft Office Word?Quote from: PatoSan on August 02, 2009, 06:56:28 PM

It's Office 2007; they changed everything around with that version.

I'm not 100% but I believe a menu APPEARS when you click the office thingy in the top left (sorry, don't know the term... "office sphere?")Are you sure its not Microsoft WORKS?You can use these add-ons to add the classic menus back into various Office 2007 PROGRAMS:

Solve : comp maintenance and back up?

so what are some routine maintenance i should keep, and programs that i should use to keep my computer free of MALWARE and system running well? also, how should i BACK up my information, in case it crashes, WITHOUT USING too many cdr cd'sHijackthis
Malwarebytes
SAS
CCleaner
Sandboxie

Just don't download anything your not sure of or atleast check with us first, run AV scans as much as possible and don't click on emails that you don't know the sender although most AV programmes should help you there. Run CCleaner when you can to free up some space and malwarebytes, SAS will get rid of any filth on your computer. Run a de-frag once in a while say once a month to help keep things in order. Sandboxie will help STOP any new problems on your computer.

Solve : Odd Sound Problem?

Answer»

Bear with me, as I know very little about Vista, just helping my sister with her computer....
She has a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and all of a sudden her headphones jack wont play SOUND....
Went into control panel / sound and when doing that it says the headphones are working, and when I do a test, they indeed play the test sound just fine, you can HEAR it on the headphones, but when I go to play anything, nothing comes through them, the sound just keeps coming out of the laptop speakers, unlike when you plug the headphones in, and the sound from the speakers should stop.....
Any advice? Thanx....No ideas at all?Does another set of headphones work ? ?
Have you tested it with a factory music CD ?Quote from: patio on August 01, 2009, 06:48:06 AM

Our computer was working just fine yesterday morning but later that night we moved around the mouse (the computer was in sleep mode) and the SCREEN was pitch black. The mouse is the only thing visible on the screen at the moment. We restarted the computer and it LEAD us to the log in page but once we logged on the same thing occurred. Computer crash? Virus? Help plz. Btw the MAIN thing we're WORRIED about are all the pictures currently saved on the computer. Is there any way to retrive them??Restart your computer pressing F8 to enter safe mode ...click on last known good configuration.Once again nothing, the computer took twice as long to load and when we finally got it to restart, the same thing occurred. We have a program we can put in to clean out everything and MAYBE get it to work but losing the files is our last ALTERNATIVE...

Alan <>< Is it possible you accidentally logged in last night as a different user [as a guest, for instance]?
This could have presented a default desktop. Your WORK would probably still be on that desktop or in that documents folder instead of your own.
I've already checked to make sure I wasnt on guest. I managed to get my assignment back (went into previous versions on the documents properties) but now all my documents are gone. STUFF like "my pictures" and "my MUSIC" etc.
My shortcuts are all gone aswell.

Solve : Power Supply Troubles!!! HELP!!!?

Answer»

Hey,
I dont know how relevant this topic is to this forum, but i really need some insight and was hoping someone here could help me.
Well whats happened is, we have this new computer right, it run VistaBasic, 300gig HD, AMD Athlon x2 ETC.. and every couple of weeks the power supply blows. This power supply is labelled at AC240V/50Hz.
Can anyone assist me in dealing with this reoccurring nightmare that costs me a fortune (4 or 5 power supplies have blown and only now do i seek assistance ).

ThanksIs this a build you have done or from a supplier?it is from a supplier (HP, Compaq).I would SUSPECT the power source itself...have you had any of that home's wiring checked out ?YEAH, we recently had a whole re wiring done. So i doubt its that... I was thinking maybe the power supply is running to close to maximum the whole time, but am unsure. ;/What make and wattage are these PSU's and where are you getting them from ? ?When you say the power supply blows, does the computer just not start? does it die during operation? Do you smell BURNT electronics?....have you changed the power cord from the supply to the power bar?Well, initially we were getting them from HP, and they were sending a guy out to fix it. But then after the third time we bought one. The one we bought (the most recent one) is a XSonic, Model: ATX P4-500W.

By blow i mean yesterday i heard a loud pop and smelt burning electronics.

The reason i think its not the wiring in the house is because, we have had two other desktop pcs that lasted a few years even on the dodgey wiring.. so yeah and its just now with this new pc that the power supplies are blowing every week or so.The rewiring of the home and the power supplies popping seems too much of a coincidence...Is there anything else plugged into that circuit that could be interfering with the computer?.......... change that power cord as well......mmmm.. yeah.. well i rang a mate and asked him and he said something about the output of the circuit MIGHT be faulty (in the sense that too much voltage is coming through). I will call my electricity supplier and get them to check the wiring for us, and all that.. hopefully we can get the problem fixed.

I will get back to you's when I have explored that avenue.
Thanks for all your help.

Solve : installing 2 OS on same hard drive?

Answer»

I have xp installed on C: I want to make two partitions on C: and install Vista on the second partition.

Questions:

I have a dvd drive NAMED D: now. In that case will the new partition be named E:?

Can I change the names of the partitions and drives?Have you looked in windows help for partitioning? Have you CREATED the partition to see? The partitions follow the alphabet so.... Go into disk management and check what drive labels are already there. Why would you want a different label? It's just a letter of the alphabet not the name of your favourite song. You can rename the physical partitions using disk management in the OS that concerns you.

You don't need to though. The OS that is running will always see itself as the C: Thanks Quantos.Quote from: Mulreay on July 30, 2009, 08:17:15 PM

Solve : Can't open most(almost all) web sites in windows vista?

Answer»

I'm sorry for putting this post in the wrong forum. I've re-posted in the internet browsers forum, but please reply anyway if you can help

I had a power out due to a thunderstorm and after my HP m8100n PC came back up I can't use the internet. My ISP checked my DSL modem and everthing is okay. My ISP is Pioneer (pldi.net). I can ping and return is okay with Pioneer, yahoo, google, ect. so I know I do have a connection. I can use mozilla firefox and search google and it will pull up the search page but won't go to any of the sites. The only sites that IE 7 will go to is pldi.net or hp.com and then the pages within are super slow. I use biblegateway.com allot and when I tried it, it took about ten minuets but it finally pulled it up and took another ten minutes to search a bible verse. I currently use AVG 8.5 free anti VIRUS and spybot and windows defender for spyware/ad-ware. I've scanned in safe mode and spybot found cooolwebsearch something? but couldn't remove and promted to run on next start up. After start up scan didn't find anything I think. I'm using windows vista home premium sp2 and I've tried turning off third party services, start up programs, resetting IE and nothing helps. My hp didn't come with a vista cd and I really don't want to reformat from recovery partition. Can any one help?
Do I have a virus? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TimThe only way to tell if its a virus is too do a virus scan. Download avast home and set it too do a boot time scan but make sure the virus database is updated its all free.

I would say try restarting the modem. If they does not work go in to firefox Click Options > Advanced >Network> Settings and tick No proxy.

If this is already ticked Try Auto Detect Proxy settings.

If your system is virus free and you tried the firefox suggestion i would say that its a problem with either your network on your pc or the service provider.

Too check too see if its your pcs network

Click Start > Run and type in the run box cmd or cmd.exe click ok

Then in the new command WINDOW type

ipconfig -renew
and HIT enter.

If it shows a bunch of ip addresses and gateways then its not your network and i would get on too your isp.
Quote

Type this INSTEAD:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Also, try to restart the modem and router.

If that fails, clear your browser cookies and cache (in both firefox and IE)Thanks for the reply
I've tried restarting my dsl modem several times with no luck. I've cleared the cookies, cache, TEMP files etc. All virus, spyware, malware scans are clean, no infections. I don't have a router, just a DSL modem. The isp guy hooked up his laptop to my line and it worked okay. I've flushed dns but didn't try release and renew, I'll try that after I get home this evening. I won't have any access to this site until Monday when I can get back to this computer. My son has a different isp and I'll probably try to take my pc to his house and try to see if it'll work with his connection. Last night I tried a microsoft help url and when I got up this morning (7hrs later) firefox had opened the page but of course when I tried to go to another page it will probably take another few hours to get there. This is driving me CRAZY!!!

Totally frustrated,
TimThank you for everyones help. I reinstalled the ethernet driver and all is well.

Solve : Monitor changing from light to dark?

Answer»

I have a 2 YEAR old laptop, Vista Home Premium. 17" screen that the last couple of months has been fading from light to dark. The last couple of weeks much worse to the point where you can HARDLY see the screen. It does it in 4 stages of contrast. I have no idea if it is the video card, monitor or ?Are you using the power chord when this happens? Can you use another monitor/display attach via your VGA port and see if it AFFECTS both screens?the monitor is failing. It sounds like the backlight on the screen is failing, this happens with laptops. You could try an external monitor or warranty work if it applies.oh it's a laptop. woops.I would contact the manufacturer and see about a warranty.

That's okay BC, we all mess up, I'm happy to catch you this time...Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 28, 2009, 08:32:52 PM

oh it's a laptop. woops.

Do you mean whoops?

I had to get him as well! This happens to me a lot on my HP laptop. The problem is you have a lower backlight setting for battery, which is normal, and your power cord is disconnecting and reconnecting. This doesn't mean the cord is literally going in and out of the slot -- the cord is likely worn, like mine, and just needs a little jiggle to "reconnect". If that doesn't work, then you should call the manufacturer and have them replace the cord. I'm on my second now, and it's getting worn (also a 2 year old laptop). The first one completely wouldn't make a connection with the receiver in the laptop, and I thought it was a problem with the laptop end. I freaked out, but did some research and found out it was just the cord being dead.

If your "brick" (the little power converter box on the cord) seems to be getting excessively hot, then it's probably not working very efficiently. A surefire way to FIGURE out if it's the cord is while it's plugged in, when the screen dims randomly, look at the battery icon in the TRAY by the clock. If it appears without the cord next to it (aka it's battery power), then you know for sure. That sounds like a good catch and well worth investigating.

Solve : Cannot find downloads?

Answer»

Hello,

I am a fairly basic computer user. Internet browse, check email, download music and that about it. I am not really knowledgeable with the techincal aspects, so please bare with me. I recently just got a new computer TOWER with Windows Vista about 2 weeks ago. Ever since then, anytime I go to download something, it is nowhere to be found. A music-sharing program, email attachment, anything. It finishes DOWNLOADING and then is not on desktop or in any other folder. I've tried the search box and showing hidden files, but that does not help. Ive read up on other people with this problem, and it seems removing AVG has helped for some, but it my case I get an error message and wont let me uninstall. Ive tried the removal tool on AVG website, but cannot find the download after! This is making me soo frustrated and if anyone can shed some light, I would be so grateful What browser do you use? Internet Explorer?Yes, Internet Explorer(in internet explorer) try right clicking on the link to the download, and then selecting the option "Save Target As" in the drop down menu

from there, you should be asked where you would like the file to be downloaded to, and then just save it to a location on your computer where you can find it after it finishes downloading.

Hopefully that works for you. I am also a basic user and feel hesitant about sticking my bib in here, but in for a penny in for a pound
I also have Vista and had the same thing occur to me. Download something only to have it disappear. (That is if I had opted for the "Save" option.)
I finally found it in the "Users" folder on C drive, under a sub folder, "Downloads" and ran it from there
The only other thing I could think of would be to enter the Application name etc into the search facility and look for it that way.
Cheers
Henell
Hopefully I have not made a goose of myself In your profile there is a folder called "Downloads". By default Vista dumps all your downloads there. Have you looked there?

Alan <>< Ya, none of these suggestions work..it is a real unsolved mystery....I guess I will have to call someone for help...Unless anyone else can suggest something?

Thanks for the help peoplewhat version of windows are you USING? Vista like you MENTIONED in your original post? It says unknown in your profile next to your username...and what IE version?Try changing the default location for which the downloads are saved to.

To do this ....

1. Click on Start—>Run type regedit click ok

2. Navigate the following key from left pane

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

3. Now you should see Download Directory key from right pane (if not, right click and then from the New menu, click on String Value and name it Default Directory and double click the new icon you just created, and in the empty box, type in location of where you want the downloads saved.

For example C:/Downloads is what I have, and be sure you have a Downloads folder in the C drive.

4. Press OK and go test out your downloads again. For me, clicking on a link in Internet Explorer comes up with a box asking me if I want to Save file, run file without saving or cancel and it shows the default location I specified in the regedit when I click save but I can from there change to other location I choose)

hope this works, it's editing the REGISTRY but it's safe and it works (at least for me, I tested it as I was typing this message)Thanks for the instuctions 2x3i5x , but my downloads are still nowhere to be found....Im going crazy now so I'm gonna have to call someone lol

Thanks again for everyone's help and suggestions

Cheers The computer is only two weeks old.
I would take it back.

Solve : Run as Administrator Oddities?

Answer»

I created a shortcut for cmd.exe - C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
to my desktop so that It would be easy for me to run it as administrator. Yesterday , needing to TWEAK some tcp/ip settings using netsh . I right CLICKED on the cmd.exe shortcut and selected run as administrator from the drop down menu. Nothing happened. I tried to run several applications as administrator from their desktop SHORTCUTS but just as was the case for cmd.exe nothing happened. Finally I went to \System32 , right clicked on cmd.exe and selecte run as administrator from the drop down menu. This time I was prompted for approval and cmd.exe ran with administrative privileges.Standing alone this issue is quite odd considering that I changed no user access settings my self. Within an hour or so of this discovery I became aware of something else I find to be even more odd. I decided I aught to do a hijackthis scan and so launched the application and did a scan and saved it to a log. Just as the log file opened I remembered that Hijack this always PROMPTS me to run it as administrator and this time it had not, yet the scan completed fully as if I had. This prompted me to run cmd.exe from the shortcut on my desktop and then try to run a command which would required it to be run as administrator such as ipconfig /release. The command completed successfully. This means that although I hadn't asked windows to run the application as administrator it had done so anyhow.I checked the advanced settings in the properties of the shortcut and it had not been set to run as administrator. Before this problem had occurred I had uninstalled two programs and installed another 3 within a couple hours of each other so I wonder if there is any registry key that could affect vista user access control like this. If not registry then how might this issue have occurred and more importantly how may I do away with these changes in UAC.

Thanks for any input,
Lectro

Solve : Problem with restore and recovery?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario SR5310F. It is running on Vista Home Premium. It is all still in factory condition. I have added no memory or no upgrades. I made the recovery discs that was suggested when I used the computer for the first time. I have since used them one time when the system was giving me tons of problems. I don't remember now what the problems were. Now I have been getting the blue screen "of death." But usually it is fine once I restart occasionally has asked me to go into safe mode. About a month ago after my son used the computer and shut down (not something out of ordinary) it wouldn't let me use the internet. I found that the driver was not installed really weird but I used another computer to get and download driver. Actually problem was fixed after hp or windows updates. I have since had no problems except Mozilla Firefox freezing up every once in a while. Today I went to log on to work and Firefox froze. I had to pull up task MANAGER and end it. I restarted and the problem reoccured. I used system restore and it ended with an error and asked if I wanted to recover so I attempted this. I have the discs I created and have used once before. So I THOUGHT okay no problem, I had already made a disc of pictures and important documents, so I proceeded. This too ended with an error (ERROR: 0x4001100200001005). I have contacted compaq/hp customer support and technical. They have told me that it is a problem with my recovery discs and need to order new ones, but that is not possible because there website has an error. I have attempted this several times but it stops at 23% of reformatting partition drive and gives me the error each time. I do have a back up computer but is not able to do the stuff I need for work. I have contacted the store I PURCHASED the computer from and they too claim they can't help even though I still have 18 months left on my service PLAN. I refuse to take it to the local computer store because the last time it took them several months to install a motherboard and didn't even add the drivers. I had to do most of the work myself and spent well over LABOR and parts on it including a 25 dollar fee that was supposed to be applied to the total costs. I am open to any suggestions and am fairly knowledgable and have fixed several computers before.Quote

Can't you order over the phone?

I have gone through the resources available at msdn library, but I am still not getting how can I do practice on making those.

and after installing where should i start from?

yes, for windows

any device like keyboard, mouse, adapters, video cards, sound cards, usb ports, HDD ....etc. by the way, which device will be best to start from?

I have enough time around 6 months.

I want to make these in C and also C++ if required.

no I will not be paid. I am making these as my major project
Your major project? As in thesis work? Have you discussed this with your thesis adviser?

I'd start by trying to find some open-source drivers, so you can see the kind of coding that goes into something like this.

Be very careful not to "reverse engineer" your drivers from existing driver software. It is not well liked, and could lead to legal problems for you.

I would think that in order to write drivers for Windows, you'd need to be familiar with at least some aspects of the Windows kernel.

Have you been in touch with, or spoken to, anyone who writes driver software?

It seems like you know a couple of languages. How many lines is the largest program you've written, so far?well, I had written around 1000 lines of code to complete a project in C using structures and pointers.Quote from: san_crazy on October 04, 2008, 05:47:00 AM
well, I had written around 1000 lines of code to complete a project in C using structures and pointers.

1000 lines is about the number of lines it takes to make a Windows Program that does nothing but show a window...

alright- any experience with the Windows API? or IRPs or PTEs? Or IRQLs? Ring 0 and Ring 2? VTables? User Mode Vs Kernel Mode?

Also, you won't be able to debug it- Drivers will Blue Screen if they cause an error.Don't get me wrong, san -- I admire that you want to do this! I, too, would like to write open-source drivers, and hardly know where to start, because I haven't PROGRAMMED anything for about 25 years.

It seems like BC Programmer knows more specifics about the Windows environment than me -- I just have general knowledge.

I just don't want you to get two or three months into this thing, and find out you're in way too deep, with no real resources to help you out.Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 04, 2008, 09:41:52 AM

i dont know either of this, well you better TELL me what are the things in C i should give the emphasis on most to start off my work. and after then what else I should go for?

The DDK. I've already said this. You'll need to download the DDK- and, if you don't have it, the SDK.

You'll need to essentially learn the Windows API and the Driver Development Kit, both of which could take a VERY long time.

There are a few technical articles on MSDN that discuss drivers, but they are fairly limited- most of the knowledge about developing drivers likely lies with the hardware vendors that have been doing it for years.

Developing drivers for windows is probably one of the most difficult things you can do- you need an intimate understanding of the windows kernel and how drivers in Ring 0 communicate with User mode application and vice versa.

which C compiler are you using?turbo c (tcc)

would you suggest such forums where most of the vendors come ONLINE?
turbo c- NOT happening. You can't compile win32 programs with Turbo C, AFAIK.then which compiler I should use?

well, by now I have DOWNLOADED set up files of microsoft DDK SP1 and microsoft VIRTUAL PC to work upon but there is a problem installing DDK SP1.
at the microsoft site where I downloaded the ISO file from, instruction is there to burn the ISO file to a CD or DVD and then install it. I am doing as i have been instructed but after burning the ISO file on CD when I try to install it, it is not getting run however I have been rather asked for the application on which it would be run.
do you have some idea about this issue?

and what about the help forums?Compiler to use would likely be the Microsoft compiler- for C/C++, it's really the only compiler that can generate code that will work for a driver...

is the installer an MSI file?its not an MSI file. its just an ISO file

Solve : Transfer files & settings from XP computer to Vista computer?

Answer»

I have a DESKTOP computer RUNNING XP and a laptop computer running Vista.
I have everything I need/want on my desktop and I have it all set up the way I want. Is there a way to have my laptop basically just an extension of my desktop computer? Where I WOULD basically have one computer, two computers running off the same hard drive.

If not, is there a way to "copy" my desktop computer and "PASTE" it to the laptop computer? Not necessarily all the files (I have an external hard drive that I could use to copy all my music and such).

Or, how about a program that lets me control my desktop computer from my laptop (while I'm at WORK or in class)? I found a program like that, CrossLoop, but it's very slow and I have to OK it on both ends at the same time before I can connect.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Solve : Laptop Problems.?

Answer»

I've never seen an SFC log...checking now.In VISTA it's called CBS.log (don't mistake it with TV station )
I'm not sure, if it EXIST in XP.It's located in Windows\logs\CBS folder
According to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228, I THINK, it's native to Vista only.
It'd be very handy in any Windows version.

Solve : Help, my computer reboots everytime I play videos?

Answer»

The problem started about a month ago. It seemed I would watch a video in VLC for an hour or so and then the computer would restart. I could then wathc the rest. Then about a week or so ago it started to do it more frequently, it would do it every fifteen minutes or so during a film. So I stopped watching the films in full screen mode and the problem stopped. I could watch the whole of the film. Now yestrday I was watching a film and it started doing it every five minutes. I went away paused it and came back and I could watch the rest. Then just now I watched about thirty seconds of a film and it rebooted. What do I do, what is wrong? Sounds like a driver problem.

Does this happen when you use Windows Media Player?Well I haven't been using it because it is playing videos slowly but I cannot rmember it doing it on WMP. Do you know a way to stop it stuttering whilst playing videos?

UPDATE: I think I may have something to solve it. I was running with no hardware acceleration to play FM 2009 and now I put it back on WMP has stopped stuttering. Could this have been the problem? Disable "Restart on error" feature...

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

You may see some error message. If so, post back what it says.

I restarted after changes and got no error message.
It doesn't work that way. You need to wait for the next time, when the computer will want to shut down by itself. Since we disabled "restart on error", it may show you some error, when the situation will happen.

Now...
You need more RAM. Vista runs nicely with 2GB of RAM.
Your CPU temps look little bit high at 46-47C as for idle computer.
When was the last time, you cleaned inside the case?Your video card is stealing your memory and making you reboot. Check your memory
to see that it's all functioning. Update video driversQuote from: peter1955 on July 28, 2009, 09:21:19 AM

Solve : Can't Start-Up Vista because of shell32.dll error?!?

Answer»

I have recently installed a theme and had to rename the original shell32.dll to shell32.dll.bak and i put in a new shell32.dll file from the theme into the system 32 folder then restarted then On starting up, and before the Windows logo displays it throws up an error message:= = = = = = = Title bar text: LogonUI.exe This application has failed to start because SHELL32.dll was not found.RE-installing the application MAY fix the problem.= = = = = Clicking on [OK] then displays the Windows logo then logon, following with a black screen I get two error messages. The first is the same as that above except that the file QUOTED in the title bar is Explorer.exe. And i don't have the original vista ultimate CD i have tried the system RECOVERY and that didnt work. and i have VERY important data that i DON'T WANT TO LOOSE! what's the solution to this problem?!try starting in Safe mode with Command Prompt.

You can hook up the drive as a slave to another desktop machine and retrieve your important data...
Slave Drive Info...

I GUESS you've already discovered messing with Themes is not ALWAYS a good idea...i tried booting into safe mode with command prompt and that didn't work Alright, you'll have to go with Patio's suggestion.i guess i'll have to buy another computer Quote from: randomkidsrule on July 28, 2009, 08:36:43 AM

Nope, he wouldnt speak to me until i renewed my warranty Interesting...certainly something to CONSIDER when purchasing a computer.

What did the additional "warranty" COST?

I've managed to 'download' Windows Media Center operating system, and burnt both disks onto my own disks, now how can i make it so that my computer when i boot it up boots from the disks i've created? ThanksNot sure if we can help you there....I managed to fix it myself

I found a copy of Media Center and burned it onto a disk, and then changed the setup to put from Disk and then partitioned my hard-drive following guides on the internet and installed Media Center onto the computer and now everything WORKS fine

Thanks so much guys

Solve : My computer won't pick up my graphics card, only integrated graphics. Help??

Answer»

I recently bought a new computer specifically so I could play high end games; I'm not incredibly tech savvy and I'm sure you're all LIKE me in the sense that when you get a new toy (ie, computer) you just want to play the crap out of it.
So, low and behold, I try and play one of my favourite games (Team Fortress 2) and the graphics are HORRENDOUS. I then find out that my computer is using integrated graphics- NOT the 100+ quid (UK currency haha) graphics card I bought.
I have LITERALLY exhausted EVERYTHING I can THINK of in order to get the thing to show up in my devices.
My motheboard is an ASRock Wolfdale 1333-GLAN/M and my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB.

Please help, it's DRIVING me crazy not knowing how to use my graphics card; also, the thing is inserted correctly into my computer

[EDIT] Also, I'm using Vista 32 bit!you need to disable the on-board graphics via your BIOS setup.

You also need to plug your monitor into the video card, rather then your on-board output.Quote

You also need to plug your monitor into the video card, rather then your on-board output.
This may be the main issue () since most newer cards should disable on-board video automatically.

Also, driver installed?

Solve : Hard Drive space problem?

Answer»

I realized on my computer that after installing several programs and software I only have 48 free GB of hard drive space. My computer has a total of 288 gb usable on my hard drive, I have about 70 gb of music, a game whic is about 35 gb and several pictures and documents which ADD up to 4 gb. I recently had about 114 gb of music, but deleted about 42 gb since, however the music folder still reads 114 gb. Even with the extra music though I should still have more free space. If anyone knows the story behind this I'm listening.

Thanks EveryoneQuote from: Josh64 on July 26, 2009, 01:38:02 PM

What are you using for a music programme that would want 114gb ? That's not RIGHT unless you have just shy of 30,000 songs on your system.

I a game whic is about 35 gb

What game is this: there is no such game! Do you mean Games?Well the music folder includes all of my itunes library which is only about 14 gb of music the rest is video, sorry I meant to specify. But I have since deleted about 42 GB of Audio/video FILES, and it still reads 114GB

The Game I have itself is only 1.4GB but I have over the course of the last year added about 30 gb of add ons from different gaming download sites. It's a thirdwire game, and the website Combatace.com is where the downloads are from

ThanksOk we need to CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! First off download

ccleaner and use, its safe and good.

Then we will look at the rest.. sorry just do this step by step with me and we will sort it out.

you may want to open up COMMAND prompt (go to the start menu search box, type CMD and press enter when it finds CMD) and run the chkdsk/r command to see if there's any error on your computer's hard drive Thanks everyone I'll try this and get back to you asapHard drive space doesn't work like 2+2=4....
Besides folders, we have page file, hibernation file, etc. etc.and VOLUME shadow copies, system restore checkpoints....well I tried the disk check, and ran ccleaner. It freed about 3gb so good start I guess.

No we put them on a cd an installed it from inside vista.

Then how will the XP install disk see them? Dont think so. Ummmm he thought apperntly that when the install ran that it would detect it. So I think I read that you had to make it into a bootable disk an install it like that but it didnt seem to work for them.

Solve : Registry Key Info?

Answer»

Hello All,

I have been trying to find some definitive information regarding the following Windows registry keys

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProductId
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductId
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\LicenseInfo
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\InstallDate

I need to create a multifactor installation identification technique. I am thinking of using HKLM information, volume serial number for the drive with the Windows temp folder and the CPUId. The idea is to minimize the possibility that either none of this information is somehow accessible or is doctored by the user. A failure on more than one factor will block software installation.

These registry keys sound like they could be useful but I have been unable to find any definitive information regarding them. Also, why is there some basic info under the Windows key and then more stuff under the Windows NT key?

I should add that the only OSs of interest to me are XP and Vista. I would much appreciate any help.
Information on Vista's registry is difficult to locate. I can only suggest that you take a look at: Windows 98 Registry by John Woram. I have found it to be factual straight forward and honest. It was written some time ago on Window's 95 and 98 and may not be identical with Vista's registry. I think they are similar.

I might add that it is my opinion that registry information extant is burdened with disinformation deliberately formulated to confuse the uninitiated. It seems that Microsoft deliberately contrived the registry to be obscure and confusing. Some excellent programmers I have spoken to share my impression. I wish you luck in your quest for information.@FredAt:

Those registry entries, as you know, deal with XP/Vista Activation and so forth.

However- they don't uniquely identify the PC your installing your software too, since they could need to reactivate Windows, which would change these entries.

I have seen a lot of applications use the Disk Serial Number, but at the same time this has caused a lot of problems, particularly when a user upgrades their Hard Disk.

Are you programming this multifactor installation technique? If so I can provide some good sources of information on the subject of preventing your program from being cracked.Thank you for the replies. You are right - information regarding registry keys appears to be deliberately confusing. There are no number of sources on the net that purport to provide information but none of them are quite upto the task of providing an authoritative view on distinct keys.

I realize that reformatting the disk or UPGRADING Windows would change some of the data I am planning to use. In my experience, this happens sufficiently infrequently for it not to be the main criterion I use in choosing the copy protection implementation I use. I have already implemented the technique and it gives satisfactory results on all the computers at my disposal - not that, that is any measure of success.

Any additional information that you may be able to provide would be most welcome - perhaps it will help me to harden the technique and identify potential problems.

Also - in case any one knows - just what is the current status of the CPUId? When Intel first introduced it I know that Civil Liberties advocates effectively killed it. However, on all of my machines (AMD as well as Intel) I get the ID no problems at all. I actually convert it into a cryptographically secure 256 bit hash so I can assure users that I am not in fact recording information that can be used to identify them.I don't pretend to know a lot about the registry. I have looked into it some. I didn't mean to imply that it is a bunch of nonsense. I have my opinions like everyone else. I don't think it came about by accident. As you know it has grown since it's inception until with Vista it must consume a hefty chunk of the microprocessor's time. My opinion is that it is Microsoft's effort to PROTECT premium content in computers running windows. It does a pretty good job of this and the philosophy now spills into the design of most of the peripherals. If we CONSIDER that the coming trend is for our computers to be the center of our living room's entertainment equipment we can see the need for some method to control and protect the 'intellectual property, of not only our computers but all kinds of media players attached. Thus the registry concept of a shell to guard the revenue stream of not only Microsoft but the music and video we might like to play. The coming digital transition of TV is I think somewhat driven by this philosophy.

I don't know what you can do with all this but if I were a smart Young programmer I might do away with the registry and replace it with an assembly program. Open source anyone?Quote from: copas on October 03, 2008, 06:55:26 AM

I don't know what you can do with all this but if I were a smart Young programmer I might do away with the registry and replace it with an assembly program.

That doesn't make any sense. the registry is a data storage method. No execution takes place.

You are completely confused as to what the registry is. Perhaps I can explain:

The registry has existed since windows 3.1, and came about to facilitate the management of Component Object Model (COM) classes(for their "Object Linking and Embedding" (OLE) features. Microsoft then realized that COM was itself a useful method of binary reusability, and so created a DLL called COMPOBJ.DLL, which managed these objects for other applications via "CoCreateInstance" and so forth.

THe story goes on- but in short, I think your confusing the registry with the kernel. AFAIK, the kernel DOES contain DRM code, in that it will check a drivers "tilt bits" whenever it returns from a function WITHIN that driver. if they are flipped, the driver purposely blue screens.

I don't understand the complete story of the registry. I have learned what little I know by gently tweaking it. It sees to behave somewhat like another high level language. I can change the data in the registry and change the looks of some of the graphics, sometimes. But I haven't found a definitive publication on this. If you know of some I would be further in your debt if you pointed me to them. I understand the registry isn't the whole story.

The registry seems to grow larger with time especially since Vista has implemented the security measures with tilt bits and such.

Thanks for being helpful.the registry just stores data- that is why you can change stuff- the registry is where the information on such things are saved.

the registry is pretty much a giant INI file. It might be used to store information ON drm, but that actual DRM code that deals with it is elsewhere.

My other computer isn't working. Yesterday I downloaded a discography of an artist, I put it in Itunes and I started syncing it into my ipod (it was around 300 songs) and left it to sync. Later when I went to check the screen was shaking (the image not the monitor itself) I turned off the computer and now when I turn it on, it won't go to the loading or log in screen.

It goes to the regular Hp screen when it starts (still shaking) and it say at the bottom: Escape for Boot menu, F1 for setup, and F10 for safe mode. It won't go into safe mode, when I go to boot menu it says

I went into setup and change the boot priority, but it still won't load.

If I can't fix it, can i just buy Windows Vista disc and install that on the computer, I don't care if I lose everything.

Any help would be great, thank's to anybody who can help. Here's a better quality video. The audio didn't put on right, and it's really loud so you might want to turn off your volume or lower it.

Please help ?What does first blue screen say? It's hard to read.it says.

A Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space, if a driver is specified in the stop message disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Solve : Computer will not restart?

Answer» DELL computer running Vista Home Basic SP1 - 1 GB RAM, Intel P4 3.0 GHz processor. The computer will not restart - it starts (cold boot) and shuts down normally, but will not restart (hot boot). When attempting to restart, it logs off normally, then displays the "Shutting down" message, and after a time the screen goes black - and remains so indefinitely. At this point I have to press and hold the start button to get it to shut down completely - before pressing it again to start up normally (cold boot).

This would not normally be a PROBLEM I couldn't live with, but I'm trying to upgrade the BIOS (from Dell's site). The instructions from Dell say to run the downloaded EXE file from within Windows, and the BIOS is flashed after the computer restarts. Because of the problem described above, the computer will not restart as part of this BIOS upgrade process, and consequently does not upgrade to the latest version.

I've already tried setting the BIOS to "FACTORY default settings" but this did not help.

Any ideas - could there perhaps be a corruption in one of the Registry keys which controls the restart command?Any particular reason for the BIOS update?

Flashing the BIOS should never be done UNLESS recommended by a tech as a result of hardware incompatibilities...or BIOS feature fix.

I'm assuming you already know this...

If the machine was under warranty, you MAY have just voided it...

Solve : SYSTEM RESTORE Unspecified error?

Answer»

I am on Vista Ultimate. IE8.
Today in my efforts to deal with TAGS (about which I am ignorant) which are part of the lefthand column of the Windows Gallery, I inadvertently removed items having nothing to do with those thousands in the Gallery.

It did not occur to me that anything done there could affect entirely separate areas. Unsure how much I lost, but the one I know about is ROBOFORM. It had been wiped clean of contents which most importantly includes my 100-plus IDs & PWs. That is of INDESCRIBABLE importance representing an ACCUMULATION of several years. YES, I do have a backup, and more up-to-date than I recalled: It is a file in DOCUMENTS, ROBOFORM LIST 26JUN09.
Transferring into RoboF Passcards, now empty, is important but secondary to main problem.
Yes, RoboF provided a URL to accomplish this but without going into details, I have been unable to do it.

I was confident the easy solution is System RESTORE. Sure enough, there were two restore points of yesterday which was most ENCOURAGING. Went through the process without difficulty on each of them, but both ended:
NOT COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY; FILES/PROGRAMS UNCHANGED. UNSPECIFIED ERROR OCCURRED DURING SYSTEM RESTORE

As all too often, MSN leaves one without slightest idea of what the error is, much less what to do about it.

I will much appreciate a more knowledgeable forum colleague telling me how to find the unspecified error and then how to correct it, or perhaps there is another way to achieve a system restore successfully -- the closer to 23JUL09 the better. Thank you!

Did you TRY running System Restore in Safe Mode?
Do you have Norton antivirus or any Symantec programs on your computer?Thank you both.
No, I do not have either; rely on COMODO Internet Security, WinUtilities & CCleaner.
Yes, I did use Safe Mode and did restore as noted one day earlier, 23JUL09.

Unfortunately, my delight died 'a borning. Everything where it was, but the very reason for the Restore was for ROBOFORM 100-plus IDs & PWs. Not only were they not restored but the program itself now has icon with "x".

I had installed a half-dozen of my most immediate needs during the interim but those disappeared as well. Of course I'm into RF support and I do have backups. Problem is RF says I'll find, for ex, Default Profile at a location only to find it isn't. ETC.

What perhaps either/both of you helpful members can do is to provide exact path,
1-2-3 to move the backup file from DOCUMENTS into RF. Much obliged!

Cordially,

Please help me.....More info on the drive and how you set up the partitions and what sizes etc. will help...

Meantime i would at least run chkdsk /r on all your partitions to start...i m attaching screenshot of my drives........

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]What a mess...
What is the Primary BOOTABLE partition and it's OS ? ?

What partition were you attempting to installWin2Server onto ? ?

If that were my system and i wanted it to function correctly i would:
1) Determine what OS's i wanted to install
2) Set up a partition STRATEGY to MAKE that a workable solution
3) Start by installing the oldest OS first and continue from there
4 Consider adding another drive to the system to handle it's needs.
5) Format and start from scratch...

I'm not sure why there is a blue overlay in your image supplied but it MAKES it impossible to see all the partitions involved.

I run Vista Basic x64. I'm in the market for a new Internet Security Suite, but I don't want to pay a lot of money for it. I ran into this one while surfing. XMicro Internet Security Suite: http://www.xmicro.com/

The thing is, first, I've never heard of them! SECOND, they are selling the Internet Security Suite for $25!!! How can that be possible. I have written them and asked them the same question.

But regardless of all of that, I just want to know, if it's STABLE, secure and low on resources. Not to mention, good detection rates with their anti-virus. I have downloaded their trial and I might give that a run.

But I can't find any reviews on this and was wondering if you guys have heard anything about it.

Jan LaFataI don't like all in one Suites that claim they can do it all...
Awhile back SOMEONE referred me to their Anti Spyware app ( 14.95 ) and i did a short test with it on an XP machine and then ran my other scanners just to see...
I remember not being impressed ...but that was awhile ago.
Normally if something doesn't last on my testbench machine it's just not up to snuff.

This is not a wholesale KNOCK on their products by any means...just what i remember from the test process.

Others may have experience with them that was just mine.

For a well rounded protection arsenal mostly Free, Users here will have a good deal of suggestions...course it needs to be tailored to Vista.X64.
Personally, i WOULD go for that, being as they are not known.

I would recommend Nod32, i have heard a lot of things about that, and it has been really good!!! So i recommend Nod32Quote

Personally, i would go for that, being as they are not known.

Solve : Do you have Data Execution Prevention (DEP) on, or off on Vista??

Answer»

I wasn't familiar with it, so I did some reading, and it looks like some useless crap, so I turned it off.
I wasn't EVEN aware of it running on my computer, until today. I was burning a movie with Windows DVD Maker, and it kept shutting off, saying, that DEP did it.
Your thoughts?Data Execution Prevention (DEP) prevents such THINGS as PARSE errors or other errors working with data from messing up the program by ACTUALLY executing that data as machine code.

It's also in Windows XP as of SP2.

not only that, but executing Data as code is a method used by hackers in exploits.

a buffer overrun error, for example, would write say a string past the stack frame- a specially engineered string could be planted that allows for any type of code to execute in the context of the program- so if the program was run as an administrator, that malicious code will have free reign.

I TURN it off and rely on Event Viewer...why have 2 steps ? ?

Course my Vista experience is way different than Broni's,.....I have it off as well. Thanks guys for sharing.

Solve : Unusual Computer Problem(most programs can't connect to the internet)?

Answer»

I am using a Laptop with Windows Vista OS. The problem i am encountering is that, whether or wireless or ethernet, when i connect to any network with internet access, most of my programs will still not connect to the internet. I know the problem isn't that the connection isn't really WORKING, becuase xfire is able to connect to the internet, and at one point so was IE. However, Firefox, Google Chrome, Yahoo Mesenger, Windows Messenger, and numerous other programs i have on my computer refuse to connect. I have already checked the firewall, scanned excessively for viruses and other malware, and tried rebooting. IE no longer works either. I am at a dead end. Does anyone have any experience with anything simialar to this problem?

The Internet browsers are not giving me an error page, they simply won't connect. They never progress any toward loading the page.If you go to Command Prompt (Start --> Search Bar--> cmd and press Enter), type ping www.google.com and press Enter.
What are the results?

Also, when did the problem start? Any recent downloads/installs/hardware changes/ect....the most recent changes i have MADE to the system of any kind were, in order, Downloading a new slingplayer VERSION(three days before the problem began), and reactivating Norton security software(one day before). I have already checked norton, and additionally, in case it helps, my computer defrags weekly, including the day before the problem.

I will get back to you about the ping shortlyOk...basically, the info i get after the ping is

4 packets sent, 4 packets received, 0% loss, Minimum: 52 ms, Maximum: 117 ms, Average: 76ms

Dunno if it will help, but another computer on the same network, WITHOUT the problem, has the same result but with Minimum 47, Maximum 49, Average 48In everything you've said, the only thing that jumps out at me is "Norton".
If you'll just READ, you'll find thousands of reports, all over the internet, where Norton has screwed up someone's PC. It's probably done more damage than any Virus.

SHUT it down 'Completely' and try your internet connections again.

Or better yet, run the best program to ever come out of Symantec,
the, "Norton Removal Tool".
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2006050909471013

I use this tool on every PC that I work on, to remove the biggest threat to system stability and performance.

Good Luck,
Shadow
Yeah, I suggest getting rid of Norton and installing a better antivius.
There are a few free Antivirus programs out there that do just as well as paid software.Did you try Safe Mode with Networking?Well, i tried all of those things, and i actually already had a good free antivirus, i just never bothered to get rid of norton. I did try safe mode with networking, but was unable to get on the internet at all.

At this point THOUGH, i've solved the problem with a system recovery. I had to back up all my files, but everything is working now.

Thanks for the help anyway.I'd still get rid of Norton using the Norton removal Tool available at Symantecs website....
You and your machine will be much happier.

Solve : Same problem - blue screen, then shut down?

Answer»

I've got Windows Vista. I have an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.21 GHz and RAM is 2.00 GB, 32 bit operating system, and this is a computer that was built for me, so I have no BRAND name like Dell or Gateway. Two days ago my computer stopped booting up, asked me to Press F2 for setup or continue with boot by pressing F1. I don't know what to do with setup, so I pressed F1. I was bopping around the Internet and all of a sudden a blue screen comes up with this message:

BCCode: a
BCP1: 96717008
BCP2: 00000000
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 82641349

OS Version: 6_0_6001
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 768_1
Files that help describe the problem:

c:\Windows\Minidump\Mini072309-03.dmp
c:\USERS\Debby\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-42000-0.sysdata.xml
c:\Users\Debby\AppData\Local\Temp\WER2930.tmp.version.txt

Then it got so it wouldn't give me a blue screen, would just say Internet Explorer is shutting down. I have been on here before asking what I can do about Windows Mail, it won't open pps. files, so I was told to download PowerPoint Viewer, which I did, and still nothing happened, won't open them, that was about a month ago so I have been dabbling into trying to figure that out. It says I am to associate a file with it and when I go to File Associations, I click on PowerPoint Viewer to tell it to open with email, then go to the attachment on the email, click it, only now the box doesn't pop up telling me this file has no association, it just doesn't do anything, so I put it back to the way it was originally. Now, however, last night I got ANOTHER error message about my NVIDIA nForce sata driver was not working correctly - don't know what that is but Windows sent me to their website to download driver, which I did. It seems after downloading the driver, things got worse. Today, however, I have experienced no problems except having to hit F1 to continue to boot. Well, so far no blue screens, or shut downs. Oh, and also, I use Security Shield 2008 and it gave me a notice that my database was corrupted, to download database. Did that and it was okay for a while, then about 2 hours later, reported the same thing, I downloaded updates again, and it was fine. I ran a Virus Scan, nothing there. Can anybody offer any explanations and/or fixes? Help would be much appreciated.

I hesitate to take it somewhere to have it looked at as I was laid off from my job of 14 years last Friday and money is tight so I'm trying to do what I can do before having to call someone for the fix. I did pull up somewhere last night a list of errors and a lot of it said Internet Explorer not responding, that's when it just shut down. Or it would come on saying Internet Explorer is experiencing problems and will shut down and close all open PROGRAMS, which it did. I got the blue screen and it shut off my computer twice (not up there long enough to read it all) and just a shutdown 4 times within 3 hours with no explanation. Everything would just go black and that was it. It would then either restart my computer, or just go back to my desktop.

I hope I have provided enough information for my problem. Thanks to all!

My condolences.

Does the system give you an option to enter "Safe Mode"?Sometimes it gives me the option of Safe Mode, but I can get to Safe Mode when starting computer by pressing F8, can't I? But then what do I do in Safe Mode?
Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach ZIPPED file to your next reply.
Vista users. You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.
Thank you, Broni, but I think you have helped me before and I'm still computer stupid. Don't know a thing about any zip (other than I lost mine a long time ago! lol). You know me, I need step-by-step, I don't know how to zip. However, I did just get an email from my computer dude who built this thing and told me to call him tomorrow afternoon as he should be in his shop and bring it up and he'd look at it. Only problem with him is he isn't always true to his word. He'll say he'll be there, and he's not, or he won't answer the phone. That's why I'm trying to fix it on my own.

To zip a file(s)...
Download, and install 7-zip: http://www.7-zip.org/
Right click on a file, you want to zip.
Click 7-zip, then Add to archive.
Click on drop-down menu, next to Archive format, and select zip format.
Click OK.
You'll find zipped file (.zip extension) in the same folder as the original file. Thanks Broni, I think I will try this tomorrow morning as it's late here in Virginia and I am getting a splitting headache with all this (well, it really started with my retired husband trying to fill out an application online and me trying to fix his mess), and I am going to go to bed now and hopefully wake up ready to tackle what you've instructed. I guess if I am not successful, I'll be back here later in the morning.
