Solve : Toshiba+Vista unable to connect to network printer? |
Answer»

Toshi Satellite L45-S7409, barely 6 months old, running Vista (spit). We have about 4 other computers--all running XP--on our home network, and all those can connect to our SHARED LaserJet 4250 PRINTER. In Windows® XP Home Edition, the default workgroup name is MSHOME. If you upgrade a computer running Windows XP Home Edition to Windows Vista, it will keep its existing workgroup name. However, new computers with Windows Vista can have a different workgroup name than the other computers on your network. With different workgroups, it takes more time and effort to view all of the computers on the network.

Windows Vista uses the Public folder, rather than the Shared DOCUMENTS folder in Windows XP, to simplify file sharing. With Public folder sharing enabled, the public folders and all of the folders within the Public folder are automatically shared with the name Public. You do not have to configure file sharing on separate folders. You only have to either move or copy the file or folder you want to share on the network to the Public folder.

Windows Vista by default does not allow simple file sharing. ACCESS to shared folders, including the public folder (if shared), requires a user name and password. Simple file sharing is enabled by default in Windows XP Home Edition."Thanks to all for the help/ideas. I'll start clicking the links/running the threads as soon as workload permits and will report results here.

To clear up a question that might have some bearing on problem: The Toshi has never printed to the LaserJet, because Toshi doesn't have a parallel port and the LJ's USB card died a month after we got the LJ. HP replaced the USB card under warranty but then the *replacement* died a month later, just as we were starting to print a big job.

I rigged a solution by connecting the LJ to a desktop via parallel port and using the LJ as a shared printer. But the computer calling the printing was a laptop that wasn't the Toshi. When that laptop eventually died we shifted to the Toshi backup--which is when we discovered the no-print problem.

One obvious solution would be to replace the dead usb card and connect the Toshi directly to the LJ w/ usb, and that may be what we do. But it shouldn't be this hard to get a new, seemingly sound laptop running Microsoft's latest, zoomy OS to connect to a network printer that's used by 4 other networked machines running the OLDer OS.

I can't help thinking it's significant that all our XP machines work fine with the LJ, while the one running Vista doesn't. Also, just heard that Vista doesn't support parallel port printing--which doesn't seem logical but then again... Can anyone confirm or debunk this?

In any case, thanks again.

--sLooking this over may help.....

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

| |

Solve : How to dual boot? |
Answer»

I just bought a new custom built computer, a Intel duo CORE 3.00Gz, and it has Vista HOME premium on it. My current machine has Xp. I don't want to lose my stuff on my HD on the XP machine. What is the best way to keep it. Can I put the old HD in the new machine? The new machine has 2 HD in it, but it has alot of expansion room.Do you have space on this hard drive to move around partitions if you need to?A little, but not alot...about 60Gb.Do you really need to dual boot or do you just want to have the files from your XP machine accessible on your new machine? I.e. do you really need to run XP on the new machine?
If not you can simply install the hdd from your old machine in the new one and use it for storage. You don't need to run XP do access the files. What about the XP being on the old drive?I'd say you'd want to remove XP, so the system doesn't detect two operating systems. I don't know if you can dual boot operating systems that are on separate drives. I don't have enough experience in that area (or too many other areas )Hook it up as a slave device, the computer shouldn't try to boot from it then.
Move the data you need to save to one of the other drives and format the drive with XP on. Move the data back afterwards.
Quote from: Aegis on March 17, 2008, 03:09:13 PM

I don't know if you can dual boot operating systems that are on separate drives.

You can.
But in this case it will never be true dual booting since Vista isn't aware of XP being installed on another drive and VICE versa.
Thanks!!Okay, I did not know that. So the system will not (generally) try to boot a slave drive. (I stuck the generally in there to give you a little "wggle room" in case you need it, Deerpark. )
Hehe using words like generally and usually is always a good idea when talking about computers.
They can be strange beasts at times.
Generally, if the computer is configured properly with the primary master hdd holding the operating system it shouldn't try and boot a slave. (This can be overridden by selecting a different boot order in the BIOS on most BOARDS, but it is best to let your boot device be the master.)

I probably should mention I'm talking about IDE drives here. With SATA drives there is no master/slave relationship since there's only one drive per channel. In this case the boot order is controlled by the BIOS.
Be sure to CHECK your BIOS if your mixing IDE and SATA drives. It may try to boot IDE drives before SATA.

| |

Solve : Windows Vista, updates? |
Answer»

Gday all, new at this and trying to find my way around. Bit of a battle for an Aussie dinosaur. I have a fair idea how to drive this monster, but havent a clue as to what goes on under the case.
Here goes :-
Ihave a machine with a 2.8 dpcu processor, running Vista Home premium, 32BIT with 1015mb ram.
I have been regularly downloading the recommended updates, but have hit a snag twice lately which gave my computer a dose of indigestion.
Briefly, on both occasions I was downloading recommended "chipset" (what the *censored* is that?) updates. Did so and on both occasions the machine WENT berserk. On the first occasion the desktop icons shrunk right down to miniscule size. I adjusted the screen resolution and they came back, but when I opened applications such as word, Excell, or some other forums the font was miniscule size, the toolbar icons were very small, etc etc.
I didnt like that so on both occasions I did a "system restore" which fixed things up.
The latest download was "Intel Corporation Video, Intel, 82945G- Express chipset family. " The Machine didnt like that either. Same result.
I have several questions :-
1. What does a chipset do?
2.Is it imperative to download them?
3. Will the machine continue to run without these updates?
4. Is it possible to download them without the machine going bonkers?
Thanks in ADVANCE for any help to a mystified user. I miss my XP

Hello and welcome to the CH forums henell.
QUOTE from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM

1. What does a chipset do?

It can do a lot of things. It refers to the chips that among other things ties together the different hardware components on your motherboard. Chipset manufacturers can also integrate certain hardware in the chipset. Most motherboards today have sound and networking capabilities integrated in the chipset for example. If it wasn't integrated you would need separate cards for sound and networking. (A lot of people still prefer non integrated solutions but that's another story.)
In this case the updates seems to be for a graphics card integrated in the chipset.
Quote from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM
2.Is it imperative to download them?

Not really. My mantra for driver updates have always been, if it's not broken don't update it.
Quote from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM
3. Will the machine continue to run without these updates?

Yes.
Driver updates for graphics cards are mainly for fixing/improving compatibility with new games. (Updates can correct other bugs as well... but like I said, if you're not experiencing any issues there's not point in updating.)
Quote from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM
4. Is it possible to download them without the machine going bonkers?

A driver update for the graphics card might screw up the resolution but it shouldn't mess with fonts sizes and things like that. It's not something I've heard of before. Thanks mate. You have let a little light into the mystery of what goes on inside the box.
Cheers
Henry

| |

Only a gig of RAM.

I need to upgrade to XP. Maybe dropping the useless programs will help.

Still, out of curiosity, does anybody have a list of processes that vista needs and doesn't need?mr_skipper24 posted a link with an extensive list of tips on how to speed up the Performance of Vista. So, that's your solution. Don't just ask about processes, get to work on that list.http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

After your done doing the tweaks listed on the web site listed above you can take a look here.....

I just hate that these PC sellers will sell it with Vista when the darn thing doesn't run worth a pooh unless it has a min of 2 gbs of memory.

Add another GB of Ram and you'll be good to go.As quoted from pcstats:

Generally speaking more computer memory is better than less. However, installing more than 2GB of RAM doesn't necessarily translate into a faster Vista desktop PC. Only a few applications may see improvement, and then the law of diminishing returns kicks in. So 2GB of RAM is generally considered the sweet spot for Windows Vista. As the operating system matures, along with supporting software, it's possible that NUMBER will climb. It's a wise move to choose a PC that can be upgraded to 4GB.

Quote

It's a wise move to choose a PC that can be upgraded to 4GB.
You have to be aware, that none of 32-bit OS will utilize 4GB of RAM.
Depending on system configuration, Windows will use only from under 3GB to 3.5GB

| |

Solve : Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)? |
Answer»

Just tonight, a folder I have within my My Music folder (containing my .mp3 files) started only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only. Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z. The folders and files ARE THERE, because if you type their full path in the address bar, they show up (and the files still play fine in iTunes).

Again, if you open up the folder they simply don't appear. Even if you do a Windows Search, they still don't appear. I even tried copying this problem folder to my external hard drive, but the folders and files still do not appear! I have seen a report of a folder with 10,000 files in where Windows Explorer crashes after reading around 3500 file names. Lots of long filenames with similar beginnings is going to make the short-filename generation feature exhaust resources and cause slowdowns and crashes.

If NTFS is the filesystem, it may not be the FS which is borking out, it may be Explorer. Very large numbers of files will slow it down to a crawl. Any way, a disk check wouldn't be a bad idea. Perhaps a defrag too?

Screenshots would be nice, or failing that, details of the file count & space used as shown in the Windows Explorer status bar, and the file count and data used figures which are right at the end of the output of DIR /S in a command prompt window.

The OP has fallen silent, which may indicate that the "penny has dropped", but who knows?
Well I'm no longer silent, as I returned from a weekend where I was (luckily) away from my problem computer.

As requested, here are some screen shots. There are discrepancies all over the place.

First, I got the folder properties of the problem folder (the name of the folder is "[mp3] Library"):

As you can see, it says there are 1605 files and 48 folders, totaling 6.89gigs.

Then, I opened the folder ("[mp3] Library") and did a "select all":

If you notice to the right, it all says only "612 items selected". However, on the file and folder properties, it says there are 1152 files and 48 folders, totaling 6.88 gigs.

AND OF COURSE, to add to the confusion, my count of the files (not folders, strictly files) should actually be 3292 files.

As you can see, nothing is making sense. Once again, no, the missing files are not hidden files, and just to be safe, I do have "Show hidden files and folders" turned ON.

Thanks for any and all CONTINUED help!!!

P.S.: Sorry for the monster-size pictures...When did you last do a disk check?

| |

It lets me keep MS Word open, but when I open one website then minimize and open another, the second website overrides the other (the first site closes), then I have to go back and open the previous site because I need to access some information. On other computers I’ve always been able to keep several WEBSITES open at a time. How can I remedy this?If you're using IE7, right click on a link, and click on either "Open in a new tab", or "Open in a new window".Tried, but that didn't solve the problem. When I opened second site, it overrides the first. I got a message "Close all tabs?" and I had to SAY yes or it wouldn't close. When you right click on a link, can you see this:

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Hi, Not sure I understand "right clicking on a link". I know how to do it, but when I open websites, I either click on desktop icon or type in web address. I don't go to my favorite sites via links. Now, I'm lost, because I'm not sure, what you're doing.
You're in Internet Explorer, and some web page is displayed, right? You want to click on some link to open it in separate tab, or window, right?
Or, I'm wrong.... Maybe my first post wasn’t clear about the problem. I turn on computer and click on a desktop icon to open Site #1. I look at it, but now I want to open Site #2 – but I don’t want to close Site #1 (Yahoo mail) because I’m expecting an e-mail. So I minimize Site #1. Then I want to go to check the news so I go to abcnews.com (Site #2). As soon as I do that, Site #1 closes, and Site #2 overrides it. So Now I’ve checked the news and I want to go back to Site #1, but it’s gone, it’s not at the bottom bar, so I have to sign in again and open. And so on. This has nothing to do with links posted within a site. Hope this clarifies things.Yes, it does, but it won't work that way.
You're using pretty strange way to navigate through the internet. Why would you go back, and forth between IE, and desktop, since you can do EVERYTHING just from Internet Explorer window?
Quote from: Broni on March 07, 2008, 12:02:03 PM

Why would you go back, and forth between IE, and desktop, since you can do everything just from Internet Explorer window?

Why am I using desktop icons? So I don't have to type in and keep track of web addresses everytime I want to go to a site. I'm open to any suggestions to make things easier, but I want to keep several sites open/minimized at once. I've never had this problem unti I started using my new computer. I'm not sure I know what you mean by IE Window. Solve : Help with windows vista!? |
Answer»

I unplugged it and it gives me something like, choose the coorect boot drive error.was xp installed before vista? was the xp drive the original drive and then you bought the new one for vista? that should clear things up. its looking for the multi-boot option that comes with XP so in theory you should be able to change the boot order in xp but since its corrupted im not sure what to do here.yeah xp was isntalled before vista. I then bought another drive which I installed vista to. Well, I guess, you'll have to back up your data, reformat both drives, and start from the scratch. Quote from: eman619 on March 01, 2008, 06:20:22 PM

Hi, I have a corrup version of windows xp on my D: hard drive and a good Vista premium on my C: drive. My problem is that my vista boot sector is located in the D: drive and I can't boot vista without the D: drive being connected. Hopefully someone can help me on this.

This still needs clearing up...there are contradictions on the info posted.
We need to know how and what was installed in what order that created this dilemna...
If Vista was properly installed on C: the boot files aren't going to WIND up on D: no matter how you fudged with it.
As you have probably learned by now Vista handles boot files a BIT DIFFERENTLY than you may be used to.
This is why the details may be important.I had windows xp media center for about 2 years. Than I had some problems with viruses, so I decided to purchase a new hard drive and vista. I installed vista on to my new drive. When ever I booted the computer it asked me what windows installation did I want to boot into. I have tried changing the boot order and disconnecting the xp drive, but will not boot into anything except for the dvd drive without my old xp drive being connected. Hope this clarifies things a LITTLE more. If not ask me what info you need.
Again thanks for the help!Post a list of your physical drives....PARTITIONS....and where each OS is installed please.drive D: xp
drive C: vista

I had drive D:xp than I installed drive C: with vista. Backup all the data you need and start over...
XP needs to be installed first as it is older.
Then a clean install of Vista.

So: XP on C:
Vista on D:

I'd also suggest using VistaBoot Pro to manage that dual-boot setup. It will run alot smoother. Install it after the XP install is up and running.
Your drivers will need to be installed under each OS as well.I don't want to run xp no more. I just want that drive as storage for the files that I have in it. I guess I'll just keep booting up from drive D:. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Really appreciated.I'd still re-install Vista to the larger of the 2 drives and wipe the other drive clean for storage if i wanted things to run smoothly...

| |

Solve : Random Vista Lags and Crashes? |
Answer»

I run Windows Vista Home Premium. It has been extremely unresponsive the past 48 hours. When certain programs run, they will hang up, or make other parts of the operating system crash. Here is a rough list of what I found:

* Help and SUPPORT does not come up, and causes the taskbar to be unresponsive.
* About 15 minutes into startup, Windows Live OneCare gives me an error message.
* I can not install a virus scanner like Avast.
* The "network" icon in the system tray is showing me as "not connected", and will not respond to left/right click". Other icons will work, HOWEVER.
* New tabs/windows in IE7 causes said program to crash
* Basically, any program that needs internet connectivity hangs (messengers, updaters, etc.)
* .wmv video files causes the Windows Media Player to crash, (but not .avi or music files, just video files. I downloaded some episodes of a tv show from Amazon). When anything runs on there, it responds to play/pause/etc. VERY slowly.
* Anytime I try to create an icon, move it, or delete it, the window that shows "calculating time REMAINING" comes up, and never goes away.
* System restore does not seem to function at all.

That is just all I can THINK of off the top of my head. In addition, anytime I run any of the above programs, even if it executes correctly, can only be shut off by using the task manager and "END process" button. Overall, the system seems to just be a tad bit slower than normal, but not really noticeable. I am currently trying to run an online virus scanner to see if anything pops up (which none of the anti virus programs can run with the exception of spybot, which just scans for spyware).

Another note is that when running of Safe Mode, most items, except Windows OneCare seem to function normally. I have since then removed that and installed other antivirus software in its place, but I can only install it through safe mode, as it hangs up on regular mode.

I'm afraid this points to a possible virus and/or complete reinstall of Vista. Can anyone come up with an alternate idea to help me out? Thanks for any future replies!

| |

Could it be possible that your computer does not meet the specifications for your version of Vista?

My guess would first be the video card since you've had problems with the monitor. Solve : Windows 2000 boots to "Preparing Network Connections" box , and freezes? |
Answer»

I have a a problem with my windows 2000 getting past the blue screen with the small horizontal rectangle that says "preparing network connections". It gets to that point and no further. I have tried booting in all modes(safe, debugging, last good mode. etc). To complicate matters, my CD Rom is inoperative. Solve : Task Manger Lies? |
Answer»

Hello, my name's Matt and I'm new to CH. Anyway, when I add up all of the processes that taks manager lists, it doesn't even come close to the total that task manager gives under the performance tab. Why is this? I'm running VISTA on a HP Pavilion laptop. It's just designed differently.
So all the notions on memory prior to Vista should be thrown out...The task manger is does not lie. There is a button on the bottom that says "Show processes from all users." Right click on it, select RENAME, and change it to Hosts.old. You might get a warning about changing the file extension, say yes.

Now reboot your system and see if you can get to websites.
Thanks for the prompt reply! Answer»

Hi all,
I have just bought a Dell Inspiron with Vista Ultimate (I can hear the groans already)
My only problem (so far) is that I can't dowload my internet mail like I used to with IE6
Neither can I import my archived mail into the new 'windows mail' as it won't accept internet mail files.
My idea was to download OE6 and continue using that,
but I can't seem to be able to UNINSTALL the windows mail program.
I'm not very bright so I may be missing something here ?
Any help greatly appreciated
Windows Mail is integrated with Vista, so it can't be uninstalled, but you can always make any other mail program as your default. Quote

I can't dowload my internet mail like I used to with IE6
IE is a web browser. To give you a headstart do you have the xp disc? it sounds like you probably have a system file missing or corrupt. here is a link from the FAQ PAGE about running a repair. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

You should be getting an error message in white letters on that blue screen??

Let me know if this helps. This has NO research or looking-up involved, it is strictly from memory, so i may be off on a bit:

First of all is it a notebook or a desktop? (too lazy to google the title )

(MOST LIKELY!!)Would you happen to have XP/Vista/Me/2000/3.1's (jk) install disk? just pop it in and either do a system repair or reinstall the OS withought deleting files...

The Hard drive could have just DIED...

The Hard Drive could be disconnected (but i dobut it unless you ever took the cover of the PC off)

Corrupted Boot.Ini file... but that is probably the least likely because it shows a different error... and i cant be 100% sure unless you describe your problem in explicit detail. and if it ever is you will need to disconnect the hd and all this that im not going to explain untill im sure it is this...

(second most likely, but i cant give detail unless i have the PC infront of me) Your computer got a virus... there are some that can, once your PC is off it cant reboot... But first do you get past the WIN XP loading screen with the bar? If you do read the next paragraph... if you dont skip it

In the loading screen press F5 (maybe F7) to go into safe mode and try to disable/remove the virus.

Otherwise your S-O-L buy a new PC.

Glad i could help ,
~Simitra

Try the Windows Recovery Console. Boot to your Windows XP disc and instead of performing an installation press R to choose the second option. After you are in the Recovery Console type FIXBOOT. This should repair a corrupted boot sector. Reboot and see what you get. If this doesn't do it go back into the Recovery Console and try typing FIXMBR. If these don't do it a reinstall of the OS may be needed. If the problem is reoccurring it could be the sign of a virus in the boot sector or a failing hard drive. There's a lot to rule out before we give it up for dead. Eg0Death that is exactly what i was saying ... Vista doesn't use boot.ini at all. And boot managers can exist in other things. NIC's have boot managers, even the Windows installation cd has a boot menu built in. But as was requested, we'll need to get more exact details before we can guess what's going on.But he stated 2 XP operating systems...nothing about Vista.
What does the install CD have to do with anything ? ?My grandson finally fixed the problem. Solve : WIN VISTA - my sound card "disappeared"...? |
Answer»

Hey everyone,

So I have a Dell laptop about 6 months old...I wanted to tell you its "stats" but i just noticed when I went into "System" it comes up saying Processor: Not Available nad RAM: Not Available. I know I have at least a 2gig dual core...and I have 2 gigs of RAM. Not sure why it can't recognize it...ALSO ever since I've had the computer I've been unable to load a webpage AND play an MP3 without the sound cracking and popping. I have to turn off my wireless internet just to play the sound or video file without it skipping and crackling...I think a computer with my speed should be able to handle two easy things...

Anyway my newest and most frustrating problem is that when I tried to use "voice" on yahoo MESSENGER it said I didn't have a sound card, which obviously I do. When I load a video in VLC media player I can see the picture but there is no sound. When I play an MP3 in winamp, winamp hardly ever opens anymore, but when it does it doesn't play and therefore there's no sound. However I can hear the sound on youtube videos and the dings of my computer's noises.

With some things I'm VERY computer literate...and in other things I'm fairly new. And this whole thing is just driving me crazy. I think my ongoing problems are Vista and not Dell related, but who knows.

Can anyone help me sort out my audio issue? (And if you've got any tips on why my supposedly fast computer can't do two things at once...that would be amazing too!!!!)

Thanks!Okay, so I just went back into the control panel to fiddle with the "sound" option again, and THIS time it came up saying that my speakers were causing a problem and should be disabled. I went in....tested them...heard the sound....and then saved my settings and now I'm getting audio again in VLC and winamp. I don't know why that error message never came up on any of the other times I went into "sound" in the control panel....

So I guess that it's fixed??? But I still have issue with my overall performance (being unable to have my wireless turned on and play an mp3) on a new computer......and how my specs aren't showing up in "system".... Quote

Also ever since I've had the computer I've been unable to load a webpage AND play an MP3 without the sound cracking and popping. I have to turn off my wireless internet just to play the sound or video file without it skipping and crackling...I think a computer with my speed should be able to handle two easy things...
Why didn't you return it, in the first place?
Do you have Recovery CDs?Returning it does sound like the smart idea now...but hindsight's 20/20 When you hear a little crackle in the sound you don't think much of it. It's not 'till after awhile you realize that it happens when an mp3 is playing and the wireless is on...and that turning the wireless off makes it stop crackling and being jittery. (It doesn't do it through the whole song....sometimes 4 times a song...sometimes it might get through a song without doing that.

I do have the discs that Dell sent....one is a WINDOWS vista disc and the other is a Dell drivers disc I believe. Quote
one is a windows vista disc
Is it Windows Vista disk (pretty unlikely), or Recovery disk?So of course I've done the thing I always get mad at other people for doing. Misplacing their recovery discs. In my defense, I've just moved and haven't unpacked everything.

I do have a recovery partition (D:) that came on my computer...so you're right the disc probably isn't a full vista version or anything like that.

But I'm probably SOL until I unpack those discs though! You better find it before your computer warranty expires.Okay I've got the disc...It's a reinstallation DVD for Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit.

It SAYS "The software is already installed on your computer. Only use this DVD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell PC"Put it in, and it should give you Repair option, I hope. When I put in the disc it gives me two options:

Check compatibility online
Install Now

Then it also says down below in smaller print: Transfer files and settings from another computer
If you have any important data, back it up.
I assume, Vista will install over itself, but it's better to be CAREFUL.

| |

Solve : i have 1 hard drive; 4 partitions; i only want 1? |
Answer»

Tanhus: Start a new thread, you'll get more replies that way.

Margaret: You will not need a WIndows cd if you use a PROGRAM like Partition Magic to resize the partitions WITHOUT deleting anything on the drive. If you use Windows to delete the other partitions and merge them all into one, you will lose everything you currently have on the computer and will then need to reinstall Windows.

Depending how how much of your stuff is on the drive will help you decide which you'd rather do -- resize the partitions, or reinstall Windows.

Also, once you end up with your 1 partition, I recommend converting the filesystem to NTFS.Well... i don't see a problem here:
QUOTE from: Anodoin on February 05, 2008, 06:34:32 PM

...you will lose everything you currently have on the computer...

he bought the comp at a thrift store... which MEANS the files are unimportant
but...
Quote from: Anodoin on February 05, 2008, 06:34:32 PM
...and will then need to reinstall Windows.

Who said he wanted windows? lol
and plus your making a larger deal out of it than necesary...
ive installed Vista Ultimate on 17 different computers in January, and thats a much more complex OS which takes much more time...
then again im a computer geek
but what anodoin said should workI'm not concerned about saving any information, the problem is not wanting to spend a ton of money on a new XP. Now my control panel is gone and I searched and the computer can't even find it. Also, someone was on the computer and that might be the problem with the control panel too.

Some pertinent points were never mentioned in this discussion. How big is partition C? How much free space on it? Does that computer have programs installed that you don't want? If so, remove them to free up space.

How big is the entire hard drive? You can install programs on partitions other than C. Depending on their situation, it would probably be easier to resize the live partitions than tracking down the right version of XP and reinstall.

But the main purpose of me suggesting to use something like Partition Magic is the preservation of data currently on the drives. Since this is not a concern, I would most definately suggest that the harddrives are wiped and repartitioned as it would probably be beneficial for all involved if it was a fresh copy of Windows. That's not a quote from the OP...that's a contributor to the thread. What I decided to do was to delete the partitions and install a new XP. My only problem now is that the computer wouldn't let me delete the last partition and so I have C - with the original OP and D- with the new XP. Can anyone tell me why I can't get rid of the old XP? The sizes of the 2 partitions are around 5G on C, and 15G on D

| |

Solve : Need Some Assistance Please : )? |
Answer»

I asked this ? in another forum and noboday is RESPONDING. So I found this site. Okay, I don't know if I posted this ? in the right thread, but I'm going to ask anyway. The past few weeks I have been experiencing some problems with my PC. I do have Vista btw. Certain websites do not load for me like Target for an example and my outlook express is all whacked out. Just TODAY whenever I'm on my outlook express checking my emails, I have to reconnect to the internet. I have DSL. I have the Norton Internet security INSTALLED also. I have cleaned out the cookies and use the ccleaner. I bummed too because I can't use the selling features on EBAY!! It won't let me type a description or load pics. I think alot of the problems have to do with my son playing that computer game called Runescape and I found out today that he was looking at alot of porn. What do you think I should do??? Oh and I can't do a SYSTEM restore because it says ERROR. I can't even sign into my yahoo mail.

Did you try Firefox as cross reference?I just assume stay with IE.Did you try Firefox as cross reference?I don't know how to do that.Download, and install Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ (another browser), and see, if you're having same problems with accessing web sites.

| |

Solve : Annoying when I boot up? |
Answer»

???OK, just this morning I get this message as my computer is booting up that when I went to msconfig (of which I believe I changed nothing) said I needed to go back and change some settings from selective start up to normal. So, I changed from selective to normal start up. and now I get this screen (note pad note) of which I will try to attache. So, this may be simple to fix no brain drain here.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by ADMIN]In msconfig, checkmark Selective mode again, restart computer.
When the message about using Selective mode pops-up (it's normal), checkmark box "Don't show me this message again". Click OK.
It won't bother you again.Still coming back so I will just keep trying!!
thefonzWell what can I do I even did a system restore to go back to yesterday the 9th but it stays. I believe I am doing what I am told to do.

Going on DSL Monday but that won't help. I probably need some more input.

thefonz:'(I suppose I should keep this thread going even though this is a different problem if INDEED it is a problem.

It used to that at the bottom of the monitor screen when you were waiting for a web page to load there would be a blue load thing moving from left to right showing you that the page is loading. I don't have this anymore. The web pages does load and when it is finished it just comes up.

So, is this right or wrong?

Also still waiting for a response about the "annoying boot up" problem

I really do not know if this is all propper so if not someone will have to tell me so here is another problem:

I have an account with UTube and when I get an email from them about someone commenting about a movie I sent UTube is SAYING that I either do not have "Flash player" on my computer or I need to upgrade to the latest version. I had no idea I needed flash player to view UTube. This computer was given to me from my brother. So, is flash important for Utube?

thefonzIt's little bit unclear about that Notepad screen, you attached.
At startup, you're getting Notepad pop-up, or where can you see that note?
At what point of startup?
The note pad pop up is the last of the boot up. After I "X" it out I get the desk top and then business as normal.

Thefonz Try here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330132 ;DThank you!!!!!!!!! that microsoft site worked!!!

Like I said I am a novice at computers and when my brother gave this hp pavillian 7950 to me he had so much junk on this computer that I don't really need. Much of the stuff I can't delete because it came with the computer that is probably on the XP disk. When I try to delete in Add/delete it says I can't If I ever have to reformat I copied "How I install XP" and I think first delete the HD

I went to UTube and looked for "Contact us" but it leads to nothing really to type them a note as to enquiring if I need "Flash"

thefonz

OK THIS IS THE POP UP I GET WHEN I TRY TO PLAY A UTUBE MOVIE: see attachement.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE ANY OF MY WORK GO TO SEARCH ON UTUBE SITE:

harryfitzner1

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Click the "Get the latest Flash player" link and install it.
You need it in order to play the videos.Thank you "DeerPark" that did the trick now tomorrow when I get "DSL" it should go faster.

Now I have a question for MR. DeerPark or anyone out there. This computer is old for my brother but new for me and I am cleaning it up. I am told that sometimes when you go to msconfig and check the startup stuff sometimes there are entries check that should not be to make the computer more efficient so I am going to make two screen shots and just let me know if there are entries that I should uncheck.
I think that attachement 38 is reall all there is'

thefonz

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]I'm glad, things started working for you.
As for your startups (msconfig), it's gonna be better readable, if you just post HijackThis log. This way, we'll see your startups, and at the same time, we'll see, if your computer is clean of "bad" guys.
Download HijackThis:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
and post its log.downloading HJT but I am also setting up for DSL but soon I will give you all the information you need.

thefonz Quote

I am also setting up for DSL
Must be exciting, huh?

| |
