Solve : Toshiba+Vista unable to connect to network printer? |
Answer» Toshi Satellite L45-S7409, barely 6 months old, running Vista (spit). We have about 4 other computers--all running XP--on our home network, and all those can connect to our SHARED LaserJet 4250 PRINTER. Except for the Toshi. You don't say if the Toshi ever connected to the printer Quote from: sf44 on March 13, 2008, 04:03:29 AM Toshi Satellite L45-S7409, barely 6 months old, running Vista (spit). We have about 4 other computers--all running XP--on our home network, and all those can connect to our shared LaserJet 4250 printer. Except for the Toshi.you have to disable the UAC (User Account Control) in vista Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 13, 2008, 11:12:05 AM you have to disable the UAC (User Account Control) in vista This has nothing to do with getting the printer recognised... sf44 You can safely ignore this advice.Patio : you think you know better.... but your nothing most of my advice is correct an I've been in the I.T. for 10yrs. I know. people on this forum seek advice about there computer and your telling sf44 to ignore my advice. we can say what ever we think it will solve the problem. Try this site. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista Since the other PC's are running XP I bet the problem is discussed in this page. Such as this "Differences in File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista The differences in file and printer sharing in Windows Vista are the following: The default workgroup name in Windows Vista has been changed to WORKGROUP. In Windows® XP Home Edition, the default workgroup name is MSHOME. If you upgrade a computer running Windows XP Home Edition to Windows Vista, it will keep its existing workgroup name. However, new computers with Windows Vista can have a different workgroup name than the other computers on your network. With different workgroups, it takes more time and effort to view all of the computers on the network. Windows Vista uses the Public folder, rather than the Shared DOCUMENTS folder in Windows XP, to simplify file sharing. With Public folder sharing enabled, the public folders and all of the folders within the Public folder are automatically shared with the name Public. You do not have to configure file sharing on separate folders. You only have to either move or copy the file or folder you want to share on the network to the Public folder. Windows Vista by default does not allow simple file sharing. ACCESS to shared folders, including the public folder (if shared), requires a user name and password. Simple file sharing is enabled by default in Windows XP Home Edition."Thanks to all for the help/ideas. I'll start clicking the links/running the threads as soon as workload permits and will report results here. To clear up a question that might have some bearing on problem: The Toshi has never printed to the LaserJet, because Toshi doesn't have a parallel port and the LJ's USB card died a month after we got the LJ. HP replaced the USB card under warranty but then the *replacement* died a month later, just as we were starting to print a big job. I rigged a solution by connecting the LJ to a desktop via parallel port and using the LJ as a shared printer. But the computer calling the printing was a laptop that wasn't the Toshi. When that laptop eventually died we shifted to the Toshi backup--which is when we discovered the no-print problem. One obvious solution would be to replace the dead usb card and connect the Toshi directly to the LJ w/ usb, and that may be what we do. But it shouldn't be this hard to get a new, seemingly sound laptop running Microsoft's latest, zoomy OS to connect to a network printer that's used by 4 other networked machines running the OLDer OS. I can't help thinking it's significant that all our XP machines work fine with the LJ, while the one running Vista doesn't. Also, just heard that Vista doesn't support parallel port printing--which doesn't seem logical but then again... Can anyone confirm or debunk this? In any case, thanks again. --sLooking this over may help..... http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx |

Solve : How to dual boot? |
Answer» I just bought a new custom built computer, a Intel duo CORE 3.00Gz, and it has Vista HOME premium on it. My current machine has Xp. I don't want to lose my stuff on my HD on the XP machine. What is the best way to keep it. Can I put the old HD in the new machine? The new machine has 2 HD in it, but it has alot of expansion room.Do you have space on this hard drive to move around partitions if you need to?A little, but not alot...about 60Gb.Do you really need to dual boot or do you just want to have the files from your XP machine accessible on your new machine? I.e. do you really need to run XP on the new machine? I don't know if you can dual boot operating systems that are on separate drives. You can. But in this case it will never be true dual booting since Vista isn't aware of XP being installed on another drive and VICE versa. Thanks!!Okay, I did not know that. So the system will not (generally) try to boot a slave drive. (I stuck the generally in there to give you a little "wggle room" in case you need it, Deerpark. ) Hehe using words like generally and usually is always a good idea when talking about computers. They can be strange beasts at times. Generally, if the computer is configured properly with the primary master hdd holding the operating system it shouldn't try and boot a slave. (This can be overridden by selecting a different boot order in the BIOS on most BOARDS, but it is best to let your boot device be the master.) I probably should mention I'm talking about IDE drives here. With SATA drives there is no master/slave relationship since there's only one drive per channel. In this case the boot order is controlled by the BIOS. Be sure to CHECK your BIOS if your mixing IDE and SATA drives. It may try to boot IDE drives before SATA. |

Solve : Windows Vista, updates? |
Answer» Gday all, new at this and trying to find my way around. Bit of a battle for an Aussie dinosaur. I have a fair idea how to drive this monster, but havent a clue as to what goes on under the case. 1. What does a chipset do?It can do a lot of things. It refers to the chips that among other things ties together the different hardware components on your motherboard. Chipset manufacturers can also integrate certain hardware in the chipset. Most motherboards today have sound and networking capabilities integrated in the chipset for example. If it wasn't integrated you would need separate cards for sound and networking. (A lot of people still prefer non integrated solutions but that's another story.) In this case the updates seems to be for a graphics card integrated in the chipset. Quote from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM 2.Is it imperative to download them? Not really. My mantra for driver updates have always been, if it's not broken don't update it. Quote from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM 3. Will the machine continue to run without these updates?Yes. Driver updates for graphics cards are mainly for fixing/improving compatibility with new games. (Updates can correct other bugs as well... but like I said, if you're not experiencing any issues there's not point in updating.) Quote from: henell on March 15, 2008, 02:10:29 AM 4. Is it possible to download them without the machine going bonkers?A driver update for the graphics card might screw up the resolution but it shouldn't mess with fonts sizes and things like that. It's not something I've heard of before. Thanks mate. You have let a little light into the mystery of what goes on inside the box. Cheers Henry |

Solve : Vista required processes? |
Answer» Hi, my computer is RUNNING vista, and it's kinda slow (obviously). COULD somebody post a list of required processes so I can REMOVE some of the bulky gunk? Thanks in advance.Try this http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.htmlThanks. I got it from walmart pretty CHEAP. Only a gig of RAM. It's a wise move to choose a PC that can be upgraded to 4GB.You have to be aware, that none of 32-bit OS will utilize 4GB of RAM. Depending on system configuration, Windows will use only from under 3GB to 3.5GB |

Solve : Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)? |
Answer» Just tonight, a folder I have within my My Music folder (containing my .mp3 files) started only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only. Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z. The folders and files ARE THERE, because if you type their full path in the address bar, they show up (and the files still play fine in iTunes). started only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only. Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z Quote "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\My Music\[mp3] Library\a-ha - Take on Me.mp3", unfortunately I can't actually see the file, The second statement contradicts the first. Quote from: Dias de verano on March 06, 2008, 12:32:12 PM Quotestarted only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only. Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z I was just using the band "a-ha" as an example...if it makes more sense, place "Taking Back Sunday - A Decade Under the Influence.mp3" instead... Anyway, yea, I think it may have just gone crazy. Quote from: Eg0Death on March 06, 2008, 12:01:24 PM I think your computer is stark raving mad. Well, if I open up one of the "invisible" folders, I can indeed drag the files out of the folders (let's say, on to my Desktop) and they'll be there...weird. MY PROBLEM is that a lot of the files (over a 1000 of them) aren't in folder...so essentially, they're stuck... needhelpreallybad, how long have you been using computers? Quote from: Dias de verano on March 06, 2008, 03:28:21 PM needhelpreallybad, how long have you been using computers? I know, I know this situation sounds ridiculous...but honestly I have no idea what the heck is going on. I have a folder. The folder has files and other folders in it. Only files and folders named A-F appear on my screen. When I do a Window Search in this folder, only files and folders named A-F show up. YET, THE FILES AND FOLDERS ARE INDEED IN THERE STILL...iTunes still plays them. I sound crazy, but that's what's going on.What view have you got in Explorer? Thumbnails, Tiles, List, Icons, or Details? What happens if you try to open the folder in Internet Explorer? Have you got some insane number of files in the same folder? Like thousands? What filesystem is the disk? It's very possible you have exceeded the file# limit for a folder and Windows freaked and split it out... Congratulations on this as i believe the limits are quite high. You may want to look into organising things better instead of dumping everything into My Music.FAT32 Maximum number of files on disk: 268,435,437 Maximum number of files in a single folder: 65,534 NTFS Maximum number of files on disk: 4,294,967,295 Maximum number of files in a single folder: 4,294,967,295 It says you cannot have more than 65,534 files in a folders on a FAT32 volume, but things will start happening before then. I have seen a report of a folder with 10,000 files in where Windows Explorer crashes after reading around 3500 file names. Lots of long filenames with similar beginnings is going to make the short-filename generation feature exhaust resources and cause slowdowns and crashes. If NTFS is the filesystem, it may not be the FS which is borking out, it may be Explorer. Very large numbers of files will slow it down to a crawl. Any way, a disk check wouldn't be a bad idea. Perhaps a defrag too? Screenshots would be nice, or failing that, details of the file count & space used as shown in the Windows Explorer status bar, and the file count and data used figures which are right at the end of the output of DIR /S in a command prompt window. The OP has fallen silent, which may indicate that the "penny has dropped", but who knows? Well I'm no longer silent, as I returned from a weekend where I was (luckily) away from my problem computer. As requested, here are some screen shots. There are discrepancies all over the place. First, I got the folder properties of the problem folder (the name of the folder is "[mp3] Library"): As you can see, it says there are 1605 files and 48 folders, totaling 6.89gigs. Then, I opened the folder ("[mp3] Library") and did a "select all": If you notice to the right, it all says only "612 items selected". However, on the file and folder properties, it says there are 1152 files and 48 folders, totaling 6.88 gigs. AND OF COURSE, to add to the confusion, my count of the files (not folders, strictly files) should actually be 3292 files. As you can see, nothing is making sense. Once again, no, the missing files are not hidden files, and just to be safe, I do have "Show hidden files and folders" turned ON. Thanks for any and all CONTINUED help!!! P.S.: Sorry for the monster-size pictures...When did you last do a disk check? |

Solve : Can only open 1 website at a time? |
Answer» I got a new computer a couple months ago – HP A6300 with Windows Vista Home Premium. Problem: I can only have one website open at a time. It lets me keep MS Word open, but when I open one website then minimize and open another, the second website overrides the other (the first site closes), then I have to go back and open the previous site because I need to access some information. On other computers I’ve always been able to keep several WEBSITES open at a time. How can I remedy this?If you're using IE7, right click on a link, and click on either "Open in a new tab", or "Open in a new window".Tried, but that didn't solve the problem. When I opened second site, it overrides the first. I got a message "Close all tabs?" and I had to SAY yes or it wouldn't close. When you right click on a link, can you see this: Why would you go back, and forth between IE, and desktop, since you can do everything just from Internet Explorer window? Why am I using desktop icons? So I don't have to type in and keep track of web addresses everytime I want to go to a site. I'm open to any suggestions to make things easier, but I want to keep several sites open/minimized at once. I've never had this problem unti I started using my new computer. I'm not sure I know what you mean by IE Window. Quote from: tango514 on March 07, 2008, 12:18:45 PM Quote from: Broni on March 07, 2008, 12:02:03 PMWhy would you go back, and forth between IE, and desktop, since you can do everything just from Internet Explorer window? Below is a capture of my FireFox window...each of those icons is a webpage inside the browser window. No need to go to the Desktop to clik a shortcut to a site... Links from the desktop will always open in a same window. Why not to use Favorites, or better, yet, Firefox, where you can have Bookmarks Toolbar, which will display all your frequently used web PAGES, and you need just one click to open them? This is from my Firefox: Following me again?...LOLActually no....i was one step ahead of you. Nope. I'm lost. When I turn on my computer and it's ready to go, my desktop looks nothing like that - not even close to that. How do I get IE Window or anything else that allows me to go to my favirite sites, and more importantly, how can I keep several sites open at the same time?Patio's, and mine screenshots are from Firefox, not Desktop. |

Solve : Installing Vista Ultimate? |
Answer» Hey guys I am having trouble installing Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition on my computer. I have a Dell E520 with a Intel Core 2 CPU at 2.13 ghz and 4 gigs of RAM. When I insert the 64-bit CD it says "Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media." I am currently running Vista Home PREMIUM 32-bit and just want to upgrade. Setup works if I try to install the 32-bit version of Ultimate however. Do I not have the specs needed to install 64-bit? THANKS!You need 64-bit processor to do that. Quote When I insert the 64-bit CD it says "Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media." ummm, have you tried booting from the CD? it sounds to me like you simply started the CD while in windows. broni is correct, we need to know what model your CPU is to make sure it is 64 bit capable. to find out what your CPU is... START > RUN > TYPE "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes> hit the + sign on the left hand side of "processors," your processors make/model number should then be shownBefore you install 64bit vista, your hardware should ALSO be in 64bit achitecture. because you cannot install a 64bit OS on a 32bit hardware. Quote from: mr_skipper24 on March 10, 2008, 12:29:34 PM Before you install 64bit vista, your hardware should also be in 64bit achitecture. because you cannot install a 64bit OS on a 32bit hardware. This has already been pointed out...twice.Let's say...skip it, again.... |

Solve : Help with windows vista!? |
Answer» I unplugged it and it gives me something like, choose the coorect boot drive error.was xp installed before vista? was the xp drive the original drive and then you bought the new one for vista? that should clear things up. its looking for the multi-boot option that comes with XP so in theory you should be able to change the boot order in xp but since its corrupted im not sure what to do here.yeah xp was isntalled before vista. I then bought another drive which I installed vista to. Well, I guess, you'll have to back up your data, reformat both drives, and start from the scratch. Quote from: eman619 on March 01, 2008, 06:20:22 PM Hi, I have a corrup version of windows xp on my D: hard drive and a good Vista premium on my C: drive. My problem is that my vista boot sector is located in the D: drive and I can't boot vista without the D: drive being connected. Hopefully someone can help me on this. This still needs clearing up...there are contradictions on the info posted. We need to know how and what was installed in what order that created this dilemna... If Vista was properly installed on C: the boot files aren't going to WIND up on D: no matter how you fudged with it. As you have probably learned by now Vista handles boot files a BIT DIFFERENTLY than you may be used to. This is why the details may be important.I had windows xp media center for about 2 years. Than I had some problems with viruses, so I decided to purchase a new hard drive and vista. I installed vista on to my new drive. When ever I booted the computer it asked me what windows installation did I want to boot into. I have tried changing the boot order and disconnecting the xp drive, but will not boot into anything except for the dvd drive without my old xp drive being connected. Hope this clarifies things a LITTLE more. If not ask me what info you need. Again thanks for the help!Post a list of your physical drives....PARTITIONS....and where each OS is installed please.drive D: xp drive C: vista I had drive D:xp than I installed drive C: with vista. Backup all the data you need and start over... XP needs to be installed first as it is older. Then a clean install of Vista. So: XP on C: Vista on D: I'd also suggest using VistaBoot Pro to manage that dual-boot setup. It will run alot smoother. Install it after the XP install is up and running. Your drivers will need to be installed under each OS as well.I don't want to run xp no more. I just want that drive as storage for the files that I have in it. I guess I'll just keep booting up from drive D:. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Really appreciated.I'd still re-install Vista to the larger of the 2 drives and wipe the other drive clean for storage if i wanted things to run smoothly... |

Solve : Task Manger Lies? |
Answer» Hello, my name's Matt and I'm new to CH. Anyway, when I add up all of the processes that taks manager lists, it doesn't even come close to the total that task manager gives under the performance tab. Why is this? Where can I find a list of every process that my computer is running? I'm running VISTA on a HP Pavilion laptop. I have 2 GB of RAM and a 2.2 Ghz Dual-Core processor. Vista is using 928 MB of memory just to run-where is it all going?Several tools are better, then TM: Process Explorer, Process Monitor, Autoruns...Just Google them.Keep in mind that Vista handles memory differently...it's designed to use what's available. |

Solve : Internet not working?? |
Answer» Hey all, um...I'm not sure, maybe this has been seen before, if so, just a link will help-My HP laptop, the one that some will recall has been nothing but trouble since the day I got it, has struck again! It sounds like you may have some more serious problems. oh, as a side note, the network settings problem i am pretty sure was not due to virus or malware, it started doing this after the laptop ran out of battery and nothing has been able to fix it since thenIs this laptop still under warranty?yeah...but i have to keep that last resort...again, it IS an option, so... Quote the one that some will recall has been nothing but trouble since the day I got itI think, you're playing with fire by not taking advantage of warranty. Quote from: Broni on February 24, 2008, 11:23:33 AM Quotethe one that some will recall has been nothing but trouble since the day I got itI think, you're playing with fire by not taking advantage of warranty. i understand-here's the reason, though, since this is the laptop that i am forced to do pretty well everything on x.x i can't really go without it for even a day or two much less any longer than that-i wouldn't have bought this laptop, since i am a mac fan, but i needed it and i wouldn't have gotten any warranty on it so that i could go dig out my archive of WinXP and put that on except that my stepfather was pressuring me to get it-he has an HP 17" that he is 100% satisfied with, + he considers me to be a clumsy oaf so the WHOLE problem is a series of mistakes-shouldn't have bought the computer in the first place... as for the situation, i am backing up what i can (not much since i only have a 4gig flash drive) and will be trying for a system restore ok, so mebbe i am whining, i'm not too proud to admit, but this was just a bunch of mistakes stacked on top of each other sry...HEY ALL! I am on my laptop...issue honest to God resolved itself-after a handful of reboots, the Internet IS back...Network and Sharing Center is still acting up, but I'm fine with that as long as the Internet works. Thanks for all the suggestions and help GUYS! |

Solve : locked out of Vista Home? |
Answer» :'(I bought an Acer(not pleased) laptop with Vista Home Basic (also not pleased!!!). Without going into the numerable problems with this memory hog OS--the latest problem I've encountered is that Vista will not recognize my password. Acer accepts no responsibility and says they will FIX the prob for $100.00. Microsoft just wants to shuffle the prob back to Acer. I've found a few SOFTWARE PROGRAMS that claim they can recover my password but most of them are assuming that I have forgotten it, and they all want a fair amount of 'change' which I don't have right now. Can anyone help me get back into my computer? Every new machine comes with a licensed OS CD. Thus, the fastest, cost-free solution to your problem is to reload your Vista OS. |

Solve : Microsoft mail? |
Answer» Hi all, I can't dowload my internet mail like I used to with IE6IE is a web browser. Are you talking about accessing webmail VIA IE or downloading POP3 mail into OE? Quote the new 'windows mail' as it won't accept internet mail files. It sure will. That's what it's for. So, what do you mean? Quote My idea was to download OE6 and continue using that,No, you can't do that. Besides, there'd be no point in it. You have Windows Mail. Many thank for your replies I have a few problems with Microsoft mail. 1. It will not download my previous OE6 mail from my ext harddrive, it SAYS that there are no matching files (*.dbx) which there are. A huge amount of my research is in technical emails since 1999 (thousands) 2. I have eight email addresses six of which are internet mail, this means I now have to VISIT each website and forward them to a POP3 account if I want them in Microsoft Mail. 3. I have 850 addresses in my OE6 address books grouped into folders, miocrosoft contacts ignores the folders and shows the complete list. I am almost at my wits end...OE6 worked FINE. what happened to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it " approach |

Solve : Computer wants to boot from two operating systems? |
Answer» I recently reformatted my hard drive on my Dell LAPTOP. When I did that I deleted all partitions and created one new one. The install WENT well, except that when I boot the machine; It gives me a choice of two Windows XP operating systems to choose from. One of the systems does not exist and the other is the working op. I know there is a way to delete one of the choices, but I have FORGOTTEN how to do this. Can someone help??See How to edit the Boot.ini file in Windows XP.Thanks for the try, but the message shows up only on the post screen, The boot.ini file only lists one operating system If you post the entire contents of the "c:\boot.ini" file, you might convince me there is only one operating system listed there. To the best of my knowledge, the system determines which operating systems exist (and how many) by reading the boot.ini file. Not necessarily. Vista doesn't use boot.ini at all. And boot managers can exist in other things. NIC's have boot managers, even the Windows installation cd has a boot menu built in. But as was requested, we'll need to get more exact details before we can guess what's going on.But he stated 2 XP operating systems...nothing about Vista. What does the install CD have to do with anything ? ?My grandson finally fixed the problem. His solution: Right click on My Computer: click on properties; Click on the advanced tab: Click on STARTUP and recovery: Click on the default operating system box and delete the one you don't want. He makes me feel pretty stupid as he's only 13.That's just a gui interface to the Boot.ini file we told you was the problem in the first place. If you click the EDIT button that appears on that screen you then see the boot.ini in a text editor. |

Solve : WIN VISTA - my sound card "disappeared"...? |
Answer» Hey everyone, Also ever since I've had the computer I've been unable to load a webpage AND play an MP3 without the sound cracking and popping. I have to turn off my wireless internet just to play the sound or video file without it skipping and crackling...I think a computer with my speed should be able to handle two easy things...Why didn't you return it, in the first place? Do you have Recovery CDs?Returning it does sound like the smart idea now...but hindsight's 20/20 When you hear a little crackle in the sound you don't think much of it. It's not 'till after awhile you realize that it happens when an mp3 is playing and the wireless is on...and that turning the wireless off makes it stop crackling and being jittery. (It doesn't do it through the whole song....sometimes 4 times a song...sometimes it might get through a song without doing that. I do have the discs that Dell sent....one is a WINDOWS vista disc and the other is a Dell drivers disc I believe. Quote one is a windows vista discIs it Windows Vista disk (pretty unlikely), or Recovery disk?So of course I've done the thing I always get mad at other people for doing. Misplacing their recovery discs. In my defense, I've just moved and haven't unpacked everything. I do have a recovery partition (D:) that came on my computer...so you're right the disc probably isn't a full vista version or anything like that. But I'm probably SOL until I unpack those discs though! You better find it before your computer warranty expires.Okay I've got the disc...It's a reinstallation DVD for Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit. It SAYS "The software is already installed on your computer. Only use this DVD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell PC"Put it in, and it should give you Repair option, I hope. When I put in the disc it gives me two options: Check compatibility online Install Now Then it also says down below in smaller print: Transfer files and settings from another computer If you have any important data, back it up. I assume, Vista will install over itself, but it's better to be CAREFUL. |

Solve : i have 1 hard drive; 4 partitions; i only want 1? |

Answer» Tanhus: Start a new thread, you'll get more replies that way. ...you will lose everything you currently have on the computer...he bought the comp at a thrift store... which MEANS the files are unimportant but... Quote from: Anodoin on February 05, 2008, 06:34:32 PM ...and will then need to reinstall Windows. Who said he wanted windows? lol and plus your making a larger deal out of it than necesary... ive installed Vista Ultimate on 17 different computers in January, and thats a much more complex OS which takes much more time... then again im a computer geek but what anodoin said should workI'm not concerned about saving any information, the problem is not wanting to spend a ton of money on a new XP. The product code is somewhere in DOS, right? This: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml will find a key for you.Thank you!Did it? Quote from: margaretforgets on February 04, 2008, 08:53:51 PM I bought the computer at the thrift store and it's running XP. The C drive is full and I can't get an anti virus program to install due to low memory. Will re-partitioning the hard drive fix that? Now my control panel is gone and I searched and the computer can't even find it. Also, someone was on the computer and that might be the problem with the control panel too. Some pertinent points were never mentioned in this discussion. How big is partition C? How much free space on it? Does that computer have programs installed that you don't want? If so, remove them to free up space. How big is the entire hard drive? You can install programs on partitions other than C. Quote from: liambiscuit on February 06, 2008, 06:06:50 AM Well... i don't see a problem here: Where the computer was originally purchased has little to do with which important filse are currently on the computer. However, the person's next post addresses that and they're not important. Quote from: liambiscuit on February 06, 2008, 06:06:50 AM Who said he wanted windows? lol While not stating it directly, the fact that they're looking to extract the license key so they don't have to purchase another one indicates to me they're looking to put XP back on the machine. You're right, reinstalling Windows is not that big of a deal, assuming they can get a hold of the same type of WIndows that's on their current machine. Depending on their situation, it would probably be easier to resize the live partitions than tracking down the right version of XP and reinstall. But the main purpose of me suggesting to use something like Partition Magic is the preservation of data currently on the drives. Since this is not a concern, I would most definately suggest that the harddrives are wiped and repartitioned as it would probably be beneficial for all involved if it was a fresh copy of Windows. That's not a quote from the OP...that's a contributor to the thread. What I decided to do was to delete the partitions and install a new XP. My only problem now is that the computer wouldn't let me delete the last partition and so I have C - with the original OP and D- with the new XP. Can anyone tell me why I can't get rid of the old XP? The sizes of the 2 partitions are around 5G on C, and 15G on D |

Solve : Need Some Assistance Please : )? |
Answer» I asked this ? in another forum and noboday is RESPONDING. So I found this site. Okay, I don't know if I posted this ? in the right thread, but I'm going to ask anyway. The past few weeks I have been experiencing some problems with my PC. I do have Vista btw. Certain websites do not load for me like Target for an example and my outlook express is all whacked out. Just TODAY whenever I'm on my outlook express checking my emails, I have to reconnect to the internet. I have DSL. I have the Norton Internet security INSTALLED also. I have cleaned out the cookies and use the ccleaner. I bummed too because I can't use the selling features on EBAY!! It won't let me type a description or load pics. I think alot of the problems have to do with my son playing that computer game called Runescape and I found out today that he was looking at alot of porn. What do you think I should do??? Oh and I can't do a SYSTEM restore because it says ERROR. I can't even sign into my yahoo mail. |

Answer» HI, ever since I got my laptop running on Window's vista i haven't been able to play dvds. i can't play them on window's media player, i just get this message: Window's media player cannot play the file. THe player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. I ALSO can't play dvds on the Toshiba DVD player either and i get this ERROR message: The specific drive cannot be located. Check the setting by going to Settings -> Action settings -> Source, or otherwise check that the drive has been properly connected to the PC. I have tried going to settings, but that was no help, and i don't KNOW how to check if the drive is properly connected to the PC. Also, when I go to My Computer, the drive isn't even located there. Sooo how can I get DVDs to play, and do i need some sort of driver to play them? |
