Solve : Temporary Profile when trying to log in?

Answer»

Laptop Specs:
DELL Inspiron (Pro, I believe)
Windows Vista

Problem:
When I TURN on my computer, the log-in screen COMES up as normal. I type in my password and it goes to the Welcome screen. But it takes about a minute and a half to on this page over the usual 10-15 seconds. It also makes a sound as if it is READING a CD, but there is no CD in the drive. Then it goes to a screen saying "Loading Desktop Settings" it stays here for a long time as well. When i finally get to the desktop, it is not my normal desktop. A small pop-up comes off the right side of my start bar and it says: Your desktop could not be loaded correctly! A temporary profile has been loaded and any changes made to it will not be saved. Also, the welcome center comes up as if it were the first time for me to use the laptop. This happens every time i try to sign in my administrative ACCOUNT. If I sign into guest this problem does not occur. I am able to use the laptop normally (i.e. get online, make documents, run programs) but nothing is saved because of the Temporary settings. I know my files are still on the computer because when I ran my virus scans I saw them scanning all my files. Basically what i need help with is to figure out how i can sign into my administrative account and stop my laptop from starting this temporary profile.

What i have done:
I have run Norton Virus Scan.

Please help me figure out how to stop logging into a temporary profile so i can log into my own.Try this url see if it helps.

Solve : Windows Installer Service?

Answer»

It all started with a simple iTunes installation problem this evening. Since the Apple Software Update mechanism kept failing to download the new version of iTunes I downloaded it from my other computer and transferred it over via a flash drive. I TRIED to execute the Installer but after about 3 seconds a windows pops up saying "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support PERSONNEL for assistance." I tried everything I found to fix this including an attempt to reinstall the Windows Installer from the MS Support site but nothing is working. Also, I tried twice to do a system restore but each TIME it failed to do the restore. I really think malware isn't the problem here but I'm not declaring any facts. By the way, the MACHINE I'm trying to fix is an HP running 64-bit Vista.
All help is appreciated.open the start menu and type services, then CLICK on the program "Services". Scroll down until you see the service named "Windows Installer" insure that this is set to startup type manual or automatic.

Solve : Need help underclocking my Graphics card?

Answer»

I have a gateway p-7811fx laptop (nvidia geforce 9800M GTS graphics card), it constantly freezes whenever the graphics card is under any stress from practically any game, did a little reading and apparently the early model's graphics card was way overclocked right now its at

Core: 600 MHz
Shader: 1500 MHz
Memory: 800 MHz

and these are the recommended specs

Core: 400 MHz
Shader: 800 MHz
Memory: 300 MHz

Just wondering how i can change these values, i downloaded rivatuner and ATI tool but can't figure them out, I heard you can also do it from the BIOS, any advice WOULD be greatly appreciated...Rivatuner-

Start Rivatuner (duh )

you should have two frames- one captioned "Target adapter" and the lower one "Driver settings". Click the small down/right pointed arrow inside the lower COMBO box. Mine says "ForceWare detected" but I don't know if that's necessary.

A menu appears- click the first option, which is "hardware settings" you should be presented with a box similar to this:

check off the top option to enable the sliders, and lower them as you feel fit; make sure to check the 3d-settings as well, which can be ACCESSED by changing the selected item in the upper right combobox.

I made the change then ran the ATI tool's 3d model and it said that the graphics card was still at 600, 1500, 800. Does it not change the maximum MHz the graphics card will go to? Or perhaps I am saving it wrong...

at the desktop, the graphics cards 2-d settings are likely active- did you change those as well?:Edit:

Fixed the problem by enabling constant performance LEVEL on performance 3D, thanks for the help.

Solve : "Windows failed to start because the system registry file is missing or corrupt"?

Answer»

My computer will not boot... I keep getting the "windows failed to start because the system registry file is MISSING or corrupt"...I've tried going in safemode, last known configuration, etc. I also just tried the Vista recovery disc (32-bit) and it still won't work... There is a lot of stuff on my laptop I need, does anyone know how I can fix this without having to lose all of my info stored on my computer?? Boot to the Vista CD and use the repair option(s)I did that already...it still won't work. It says "unable to automatically fix problem.." or something ALONG those lines..I've restarted and still back to the same issue. Did you recently install or change any hardware or have any major errors or problems?I haven't installed anything lately...I did uninstall a game that my boyfriend had downloaded on here a while ago. I have had this problem once before, but when I clicked on STARTUP repair it worked...Nothing seems to work this time, not even the Windows Vista CD...Since you have Vista DVD, try repair installation: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.htmlThanks, I read through that, but I'm not sure I understand... It says "don't run Vista DVD on boot"... am I supposed to put it in when I get to the screen that tells me "windows has failed to start..etc" ? I cannot get past that screen... ?My bad. You can use that method only from within Vista.
I think, your best bet is to slave the drive in another computer to backup your data and try clean install.
I'd check your hard drive first, though.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write IMAGE file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.Ohh...My laptop is a Toshiba ... In that case....
I think, your best bet is to slave the drive in another computer to backup your data and try clean install. Thanks so much, I will try that.Sure thing

Solve : keyboard keys @ and " switched?

Answer»

I switched two different keyboards... but they both are doing the same thing. When I go to put in @ - it comes up with " and vice versa. All other keys are working as they are supposed to- these two keys are switching functions. Only when I use the shift function - otherwise the "2" and the ' work fine....
Any ideas? What is different between the last time the keyboard worked correctly and the first time it did not? What happens in safe mode?Check the INTERNATIONAL keyboard settings in Control Panel/....This is a new system- both keyboards were brand new.

I will check the settings and see. This is my mother's new computer and I am not on it now.

I thank you both for your input and will check back LATER ....sounds like the keyboard is SET to the Canadian layout.

Or more precisely, the french-"canadien" layout.I was just TOLD something along that line- gonna check it out this evening to make sure the setting is on US.

Thanks again all!

Solve : Windows 7 Error: System Reboots After Selecting "Start Windows Normally"?

Answer»

Hello, I appear to have a problem. I am on a Dell Inspiron 530, running good OLD Windows 7. You see, earlier today (Sunday/November/15/09) I have been experiencing some very odd activity with my computer. I went to check, via task manager if any processes were screwing around with my computer, and well I was right. Some trojans, spamming some junk via IE, so I did what I normally did, and ended the processes and deleted the executables from their directories. (If you're asking me why don't I have any anti virus, I do, I have AVG Internet Securitey, which doesn't work for some odd reason, I UNINSTALLED it). Then some crazy stuff started to happen. My screen went black for a couple of seconds, then I have somethings saying that some programs have stopped working, and crashed, and some I got fatal errors from. Then everything went back to normal, and things continued on like they usually do until....BSOD, and a restart. At that point, I have figured it was probably one of those trojans, but I doubt those nasty trojans could have the audacity of giving me a BSOD.

Video Demo:

NOW TO THE REAL POINT:

Every single time I turn my PC on, the following happens:

1. Dell logo, F2 for setup, F12 for boot, typical stuff.

2. Diskette drive 0 seek failure (That's SOMETHING I probably did while I was screwing around with the BIOS, I tried setting things to the defaults, but is there anyway I could fix that, it's starting to get really irritating having to press F1 all the time to continue and all the other stuff (will explain in steps 3 and 4))

3. Windows boot manager comes up asking me which OS I would like to run, an earlier version of my OS or Windows Vista (this annoys the out of me, for two reasons, 1. I don't have an earlier version of an OS, so why does it keep asking me that? Is there any way to get rid of it? Oh and 2. It's irritating having to press not F1, but enter just to get to the Windows logo to wait for the logon screen. I mean, if I'm not there to press enter, I'm going to have to wait an extra 30 seconds for boot.

4. Black screen.... just another wait and pray game, praying that it won't reboot again. And not to my suprise, it reboots again.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

6. This time, it's different. I get another thing, which is either: "Start Up Repair" or "Start Windows Normaly", Start Windows Normaly results in step 4 hapening.

7. If I do happen to choose Start Up repair, it shows the Windows logo thingy, only to show that it does an excessivly long, useless scan, only to tell you that "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. I choose not to send, because the odds of Microsoft actually helping me is more questionable than Bill Clintons integrity.

8. I later get prompted what language of keyboard I'm using, and my user password. I enter both of them, and I get this nice menu consisting of:

i) Startup Repair (already failed
ii) System Restore (you know I feel stupid having to waste large quantities of restore points taking huge chunks of my tiny 250GB hard disk. But I find even stupider finding out that it probably wasn`t a good idea to DISABLE system restore.
iii) System image recovery (no clue what that does)
iv) Windows Memory Diagnostic (see iii)
v) The Command Prompt (no clue how to use it)

And no matter what, I always end up at number 4, in distress, confusion, anger, and dismay. Can you folks please help me out? I recently purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and I really want to continue playing.

Oh and another question.

Since you guys are such experts, in your opinion, what is the best Anti Virus software out there (free or not, it doesn't matter)?

Thanks, and save the whales.

:::!!!MORE INFO!!!!:::

I recently managed to get it so it doesn't auto restart when it crashes. I got a BSOD, and i got this error code under Technical Information:

Stop: 0x0000007E (0XC0000005, 0X81507D3, 0X8BE23608, 0X8BE231E0)

Hope the helps you guys!http://www.free-av.com/

both free and goodYou are running windows 7 so I assume that it must be a fairly new install.
Did you purchase the win7 disk or the computer within the past month? If the computer is new then it should still be under warranty. If so, I would take it back.

Solve : how to remove vista?

Answer»

a friend WANTS to remove vista and install xp on his laptop , he has the xp disc from his old pc , is it only a matter of add and remove for vista and install xpBoot to the XP CD. When the install process begins you will be given the OPTION to format before installing. Choose that option.thanks allan is there any need to remove vista or will the install/boot do thatformatting the drive will.

Of course you should advise them to check the MANUFACTURER's site to make sure there are drivers for the laptop. Anybody who claims Vista is worse then working with XP in 16 color, with no sound and no networking is in denial.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 17, 2009, 02:28:36 PM

he would rather have xp , do you mean drivers for xpYesthank you both i will let him know Make sure that there are XP drivers for that machine and that you have a valid license key. Then boot to the XP disk and follow this order:

1.Delete partitions
2.Create a new partition in the raw space
3.Format your partition (to SET up windows on the selected item press enter)

1.Delete partitions

Not a bad idea, but optional - certainly not necessary

2.Create a new partition in the raw space

See above

3.Format your partition (to set up windows on the selected item press enter)
Choose the NTFS file system and do not use the quick method.

Whether or not to use ntfs vs fat32 or do a quick format is also a user PREFERENCE. The user can always run chkdsk /r later (or even before installing). I see no reason not to do a quick format

Yes, don't worry about the rest.ta allan , i am sending him here to read this topic so that he understands so i dont want to baffle himJust tell him to boot to the XP cd, choose the "format" option for c: drive, then install XP. That's it.ok ta

Solve : Another Dual Boot question?

Answer»

My mobo is a Gigabyte MA790XXT-UD4P. Is this capapble of booting from more than ONE hard drive? If so how do I set it up so that I get a boot menu asking me which version to boot? I have windows 7 Ultimate on one hard drive and Windows XP Professional (both full retail version).
It was my understanding that both OS's had to be installed on one drive, the oldest installed on the first partition.
Right now I manually plug in and unplug the power and data cables depending on which OS I want to boot. You could hook up both drives and use the BIOS to determine which one boots at startup...Quote from: RudeDawg on November 28, 2009, 07:01:07 PM

Not necessarily. Two hard drives can be used for this.

How did you install the two OS's? See this reference, which should apply to XP and Windows 7, same as for XP and Vista: How do I... Install Windows Vista in a dual-boot configuration along with Windows XP?I installed 7 first. During installation I missed the opportunity to create extra partitions so 7 got the full 320 Gb on that disk. A week later I wanted to see how XP would work on a machine powerful enough to let it run free. Knowing how to partition with XP I set up 2x 80 Gb partitons on the second 320 Gb disk, one each for XP and 7 leaving the remainder intactfor storage. I then installed XP on the first 80 Gb partition.Quote from: RudeDawg on November 29, 2009, 09:49:58 AM

OK, if you disconnect the other HD, you should be able to install Windows 7 on the second 80GB partition of the HD on which you already have Win XP installed. That should create a dual boot setup that provides you the choice of OS when STARTING your computer. The screen that SHOWS the two OS would be SHOWING the Win 7 you installed on the second 80GB partition of the HD on which you already have Win XP installed. At this point, if you have no interest in keeping Win 7 on the other HD, you could delete it and use the full drive for storage.Great! Thanx for the advice. After using 7 for 2 weeks methinks me will end up keeping the dual boot. 7 just doesn't impress me as much as it frustrates me!Have a great day!Not sure what this means but Good LUCK....Quote from: RudeDawg on November 29, 2009, 02:46:20 PM

Solve : black screen of death on vista?

Answer»

Okay.... so my friend asked me to work on his laptop for him, and I agreed because I usually fix everything pretty fast, but this one has me stumped. When you START up Windows, it goes through the loading screen, then to a blank black screen with a cursor. The login screen never comes up. I went through all of the fixes, such as registry edits, and nothing WORKED. I think it has something to do with the USB ports, because this is the weird part. With nothing plugged in the ports, it stays on the windows load screen for about 10 seconds, then goes to the solid black. If there is something in the USB port, it will stay on the loading screen forever. As soon as I remove the USB device, the black screen comes up. I checked bios and made sure that it's boothing from the hard drive and not USB, so I'm at a loss... any ideas?

Thanks! How did you edit the registry if you can't boot to the OS?
Boot to the Vista CD and try a repair.i just opened the command prompt through the vista repair cd and typed regedit there. but the fix that worked for most people said that you changed a specific value in the registry, but it was already what it is supposed to be! i tried the vista repair and it says something about "UNABLE to repair" "if you've connected any devices such as mp3 players and such, please disconnect them and try again." that's another thing that i think points to something weird with the USBs. is there a way of uninstalling USB drivers and then REINSTALLING them?based on my experience its harddrive problem. usually corrupt boot sector or bad sector. try chkdsk /r while in recovery console.i BELIVE that is a software problem now that u are in black screen press control, alt & delete than u get task manager from there u con restore to ealier point that work i have tryd it tooBased on the info given... editing the Registry was not the solution...

Solve : rebuilding the paging file?

Answer»

Mine as well, ANYBODY can finish that sentence anyway they want. It still works. My main page file is static (size unchanging), in its own partition on a separate drive from the Windows partition. That partition is the first on the drive, at the outer edge of the platters. It is twice my RAM size but I also have a small (512 MB) static swap file on the system (C:\) partition. I experimented by changing the settings so I had a Windows managed page file on the C partition (20 GB of unfragmented free space) and it was a bit more sluggish when for example I had Firefox* open with about 8 tabs and I started another memory hungry app (Xnews). Of course playing around with settings is fun and can be instructive, but there are no magic settings which will make up for not having enough RAM for your usage pattern .

* I have set Firefox to release memory when minimised, and at the moment it shows 163,692 K memory usage, but when I minimise it it goes down to 57,620 K.

Type: “about:config” in Firefox address bar and hit Enter:

In the appeared window press the button that is labeled I’ll be careful, I promise!

Right click in the page and select: New -> Boolean

In the new appeared window type: config.trim_on_minimize and press OK

Select True value in the appeared window and press Enter

Restart Firefox.
Years ago on my site one of my mods - who was really quite an expert - was a huge proponent of making the pagefile static (setting min & max the same) to avoid fragmentation. The theory of course was that when the system reboots all data in VIRTUAL memory is released and any fragmentation would be minimal. The fact is, however, that even when the setting is dynamic Windows only expands the pagefile when necessary and on reboot it resets to the MINIMUM size, all data is released, and the result is essentially exactly the same. Bottom line, leave the pagefile alone. Pretty much anything you read in forums about adjusting the size of the pagefile is ABSOLUTE nonsense.

Quantos - no offense but your post above is not only not relevant to the OP's question, it is also incorrect. Windows is not always in control of what is or is not paged to virtual memory. But I really don't want to get into a whole pagefile thing here. These THREADS became so inane and contentious that I eventually banned them on my forum 5 years ago.re. Allan's post, I wholeheartedly agree. I don't think I made it clear enough that the difference on my system (XP pro SP3 1 GB RAM) between a tweaked-to-*censored* page file setup and letting Windows manage the whole shebang was absolutely minimal, and IMHO not worth the time I spent making the adjustments.

Probably good advice, i've got all confused now, i've printed some pages out, which tells you all about the "pageing file" so i'll have a good read on it and learn a little more......

thanks allan

Solve : Windows 7 backup - Norton - Acronis?

Answer» HELLO. I use Windows 7. And I need to make a backup copy of it.
I know that there are programs such as Norton Ghost 15 - Acronis .... etc.. To do so.
My question is in the Windows 7 there is the POSSIBILITY of making a backup copy of the system:
1-- Is there a difference between the Windows 7 (making a backup copy) and those programs (Norton - Acronis)
2-- What is the bestThere is a difference between a backup and an image. The two utilities you named create disk images - essentially a "snap shot" of the entire hd (or partition, whichever you choose). If you want to restore that image at some point, the entire system (or partition) will be as it was when you created the image. The internal tools create backups of certain files. Disk imaging also allows you to restore only certain files if you like. Personally, I wouldn't run a system without Acronis True Image and I've always said I think EVERYONE should use a disk imaging utility on a regular basis.dir allan
I understand from your reply. That Windows 7 takes a backup copy of the file or files.
Image attachment with my reply . Explain this feature for Windows. It says that backup. Contains the system. Programs
I think that Norton and Acronis have the same possibility of Windows 7 in the establishment of the backup
Am I wrong. Or not. Please ROUTER (my English is not good. Sorry)

Note: the latest version of Acronis postcard beaches feature. Acronis transfer program files( acronis backup ) to Windows backup and VICE versa

Solve : My wireless switch won't turn on, It just stays red??

Answer»

In my device manager....Network Adapters has the yellow flag on all 6 6T04 Adapter and a yellow flag on isatap.{EA5FF2C4-9B79-4658-8F37-9DAD30F5…

Is the Network adapters the reason why I can't connect to my wireless? I tried to connect wireless when I was at the hospital and noticed my switch WOULD stay red even when it's on the "On Side".

Would I have to uninstall it from the device manager? If I do, How do I reinstall it? I'm not sure if that's what I have to do or not but it's DRIVING me crazy lol.

I'd appreciate the help a lot. Thanks!!

Yes ...this MEANS the network driver is either missing or corrupt....

Solve : Being able to use 8GB of Ram with Dual Boot Vista 32 and Windows7 64?

Answer»

I have a Dell XPS720 that came with Vista Home Premium 32bit and 4 GB of Ram. RECENTLY I installed Windows7 Ultimate 64bit on separate Disk and purchased 4 more GB of Ram.

Now using Windows7 all the time but when I try to install more than 4 GB of Ram I can not boot up into Windows7. ( when it starts to boot into Windows7 it ASKS to start normally or repair...... with normal it quits and restarts and with repair it does nothing and i have to force quit) I can boot into Vista 32bit.

My Question is how can I get Windows7 to use 8 GB of Ram without starting over reinstalling all the programs and settings.

I have been told I should remove the Vista disk and the Windows7 disk and do a single boot CLEAN install of Windows7 and then I would be able use the 8 GB of Ram and the system would be more stable.

But then I would have hours and hours of reinstalling programs and settings.

I found out I can not just delete the Vista Disk because then I get a NTLDRHm... When you try to boot using all 8 it give you trouble? the second 4 Gb you ad in might be bad. Try swaping the sticks around and see if Vista 32 can boot with those sticks. You also might want to run a CHECK on those sticks to make sure they are fine.Thank you but I am pretty sure it is not the RAM or the motherboard.

The computer came with 4 1GB chips and that still works so it is not the motherboard

The new ram is 4 2GB chips and they each work alone on slot 1There's no reason Win7 Ultimate should be doing this...
Did you do a clean install over Vista ? ?No I did a clean install of WIndows7 on another disk.

Dell says some of the boot settings are on the Vista disk.

Solve : What is "blank page"??

Answer»

Broni -
I am not certain but I guess I was. If I have any choice I generally turn off things I don't know anything about or anything I don't use. BobBob
Try again...
Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on INTERNET Explorer (no add-ons).
Run it for a while in the above mode and see, if spellcheck will work.Broni -
OK I get the idea. However I have to shut down for the night. I will go over all your posts and try tomarrow. Thanks Bob
PS I just checked spell check and it is working. Will let you know if it continues to work.I'll be around Broni -
Spell check is STILL working so I guess you fixed it. Each month I run avast Antivirus, Super Antispyware, and TFC. Today I will run all these and run a back up. After that I will check on "spell check" and let you know if everything is OK. Bob
PS Spell check is not working now. I will still run my security and get back to you.It looks like some of IE add-ons was giving you problems.
I'm glad, things worked out Broni -
I have now ran my security programs and put a back up on a disc. I checked spell check and as of now it worked. Maybe you have cured my PROBLEM. I thank you for all your time. BobYou're very WELCOME Broni -
I'm back to "Blank Page". After running all my security and running a back up I still get a blank page when I use spell check. The header says that Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled. However, I checked my internet options and it listed 20 add-ons that were enabled. I have no idea what these add-ons do or if they could be deleted with harm. I have just clicked on "spell check" and it is working. I have no idea why it works sometimes and not others. This has gone far enough so let us just drop the problem. I will live with it. I thank you for all the time you spent on the problem, Bob
PS it is still working!!!!!In IE, go Tool>Internet Options>Advanced tab, click on Reset button.
Restart computer.Broni -
I did what you suggested and it seems like you have fixed my problem.
Thanks Bob
Keep me posted...

Solve : Windows 7 Boot Problems?

Answer»

I tried to up GRADE my Vista to Windows but as the diagnostic on Win 7 seemed to believe I had programmes that would not run on Win7 and they were programmes I could not UN install or delete, I decided to install Win 7 on another hard drive on my MACHINE. I now need to delete the Vista installation on the original hard drive...HOW? I have tried disconnecting the Vista hard drive but the machine fails to boot up even though it can see the Win 7 hard drive. It would seem that I need to make the Win 7 a bootable hard drive and stop the Vista had drive being bootable.

HOW?Is Windows 7 the default boot OS?There doesn't seem top be a Boot default, when the machine boots I get the option to boot either Win 7 or Vista. I want to make Win 7 the defaultThe one that is highlighted is the default. Anyway, you can either go into the boot tab of msconfig and delete the entry for Vista or you can download the more elegant EasyBCD and use that to manage the boot loader. Thanks, that has sorted out the boot problem. Now how can I delete the old Vista partition? If Vista was installed first and you delete the partition 7 will no longer boot and you'll have to re-install it...Quote from: patio on October 29, 2009, 12:20:53 PM

Sad but True! Really Sad But thanks for the adviceState more clearly your goals of how you want this machine set up and we can advise further...Thank you for this information. I had this problem and thank you for the information. I have a Dell XPS720H2o that came with Vista 32 and a added Windows7 Ultimate 64 to another SATA Disk when It came out. I like WIndows7 so much more that I took the Vista 32 Disk out of the computer and replaced it with a new formated disk and I got a "shock"

The system did not boot up into WIndows7 as expected.... instead iI got the following error

HTLDR is missing

I thought there must be something I did not know about the Dell BIOS to set the WIndows7 as the default OS but it is the default as per the Windows7 OS and Easy BCD.

I guess I am just screwed!!!! as I have to devote one internal SATA port to "History"

Here is my question.... can I replace the 32 bit Vista with a 64 bit Vista of course a a new install? so that I can at least use it with the 8gb of ram

Thank you again for SHARING your knowledge of this

David,

First of all welcome to the forum. Secondly you need to start your own thread so that you can get individualized help. And third, you need to post the CORRECT error - it is NOT HTLDR that is missing but NTLDR.Sorry for not stating the correct error...

Yes the error was NTLDR

Is there any work around to this requirement that if Vista was installed first... that Vista must be present for Windows7 to Boot.

It would seem that a lot of others set up a dual boot of Vista and Windows7 and now may want to delete Vista.

Beside a new install of Windows7 it would seem that there must be a way to fix this.

Is it in the BIOS or in how Windows7 was installed as a dual boot.... it is hard to grasp the WHY

Solve : rename computer Windows 7?

Answer»

I am just checking to see if anyone is having the same issue. When I try and rename a windows 7 system I get an error message that the account already exists. The only way I can get the change to work is by deleting the account from AD, changing the name, restarting the system, log in to the system, move the account from the default ou, and reset up the account information. Is there a way around windows trying to add it's self to the domain? This is really annoying when you are talking about having to do this for around 140 to 150 COMPUTERS in my area alone.

thanks,
Wayne =Appearance%20Personalize]Worth a Shot...thanks Patio but it did not LOOK like there was the option to change the system name. Is there any one ELSE that is running win 7 in a AD domain? If so are you seeing the same issues or could this be due to the new WDS system we just implemented?"System" name...sorry missed that part...

Here Ya Go...lol thanks

I do not have an issue changing the name only that win 7 tries to add it's self to the domain if the name is CHANGED. when it looks at the domain it see a computer account with a identical name and refuses to complete the change. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to edit the name without the system checking AD first.

Solve : Windows Locks... Then Runs...?

Answer»

Good Afternoon,

Recently upgraded my computer, and I am running Win7 64bit.

However I recently have been having a few issues with WINDOWS 7 - after weeks running flawlessly!

It initially happened when i was playing a some music through iTunes, and my system stalled... although the music continued to play. I let the song finish (what a tune it was!) and the forced my computer to reset (ctrl-alt-del wasnt working either!)

After the reboot, windows would load, and then just hang...
same would HAPPEN on safe mode, the system would load up... and hang.

However I discovered if I leave it long enough it will let me run again, although only for a short period of time.

I searched online for a solution - (although with various interuptions when windows decided it needed a NAP) - but failed to find anything that solved this problem... i fear that as I'm typing this its no longer stalled, and it may have fixed itself? ha...

anyway was wondering if you guys had any ideas to what could be the problem,

Id like to point out that my cpu is running at 27oC and have did the usual disk/memory checks, all not showing any problems... i truelly am lost for ideas...

Comp Spec:

Windows 7 (64bit)
Core i7 2.8GHz -
Ram 8gb 1600Mhz DDR3
Velociraptor WD 300GB HD
Cant remember the graphics card, but i doubt its the problem

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

DavidMy 1st suspect would be iTunes itself...
You certainly have the horsepower for Win7...

Any other issues at all leading up to this ? ?Yea, I thought it might have been iTunes as well... although when the system was hanging on safe mode, i ruled out iTunes as the problem.

To be honest I think it has solved the problem itself... I haven't crashed yet....
Although on further inspection, I think the problem may lie with Steam (game/online thing) Since IVE STOPPED this running on start-up it seems to be running smoother... but this may be a coincidence... fingers crossed!

CheersSteam is carp...and has caused many issues...however tons of people run it and have zero issues...go figure.I agree with your evaluation of steam... however it lets me play football manager 2010 without a disk... and really can a boy say no to that? haha There are other methods you know...

Solve : Windows Security Center?

Answer»

Dear Forum -

I am running VISTA and ESET Smart Security for virus protection. As of tonight, I get an orange warning icon next to the ESET icon. When I click on it, I get the following message:
ESET Smart Security 3.0. is on but is reporting its status to WINDOWS Security Center in a format that is no longer supported. Use the program's automatic updating feature, or contact the manufacturer for an updated version.
I have always automatically updated my virus protection, never had any problem, neither with ESET nor Vista. What exactly should I do? Contact the manufacturer?
Any sound advice is extremely welcome since I am not exactly a computer wiz, to put it mildly.
Thank you, Forum, for your help!!how long is the license of your ESET Smart Security? The license is current, i.e. to be renewed in August 2010.

I just found some advice on the ESET Help page. This seems to be a common problem, which I didn't know (sorry!).

The advice was:

Type "NET STOP WINMGMT /Y", then enter
Then type: REN%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\WBEM\REPOSITORY REP.Old
Then enter
Type "exit" and enter
Restart and, voilà, the problem is gone.

ONLY, in my case, after typing the first line in the command prompt window, the access was denied

I think I'll just ignore this ugly orange icon. ESET is apparantly running fine. Only the Windows Security Center is unable to RECOGNIZE this. Oh, well....

Thanks again for helping. I would be so much happier WITHOUT the warning sign.Quote

ONLY, in my case, after typing the first line in the command prompt window, the access was denied
Open command prompt as administrator.
In "START search" type in:
cmd
Hold CTRL and SHIFT, press Enter. Thanks for helping me getting access. I faithfully typed everything into the command prompt window that ESET TOLD me on their help page, but nothing happened. The warning icon is still showing. Very frustrating. Any other suggestions? Should I just forget about it?
Help is greatly appreciated!!!

Solve : Important: Vista Update info?

Answer»

Quote

I normally wait for updates for a week or so and scan all the Forums for issues before installing them.
Other than the casual USER i'd suggest this for most knowledgable users.

That being said today i grabbed the latest updates ( 4 ) from the last Patch Tuesday...
These require a re-boot and the system will appear to hang in the process...NOTE...be patient and let it finish.
On the Benchtest MACHINE the wait was over 12 MINUTES...which MAY alarm some casual users.
To test i repeated the process on the same machine but a different build of Vista...2nd build was close to that...approx. 9 1/2 minutes.

Just as a heads up...always let the update process finish...no matter if it appears to hang or not.

These are the Updates:

KB915597
KB890830
KB969947
KB973565

If you run into this as i said let it complete...and pass the word to any Vista users you may know.

patio.
Thanks for that useful info, patio. Good post patio, thanks.

Solve : How do I install 64-bit Windows 7??

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I could really use some help here. I am not a computer newbie by a long shot, but I have never used 64-bit OS. Last week I bought a Zotac Ion mobo with an Atom N330 CPU. I also have a full retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. This is not an upgrade, not OEM. It is a full retail copy with both 32- and 64-bit install files.

From what I read on Intel's website, the N330 supports x64 ARCHITECTURE, so it should support a 64-bit OS. I bought 4GB RAM and want my OS to see it all. However, when I went through the install (twice) today, I never saw the option to install 64-bit and Windows defaulted to a 32-bit install. I verified this by looking at the system properties.

I was installing on an existing SATA drive from an OLD computer that has Vista Ultimate 32-bit running on it. This drive was just a data drive, not the primary OS. I deleted the partition on the drive, repartitioned it and formatted it all before installing Win7, so I didn't think there was any residual OS files that would cause Win7 to think I previously had a 32-bit OS installed. I did a Custom install, but never saw an option for 64-bit.

Do I need to do something during installation in order to tell Windows that I want a 64-bit OS? Thank you in advance!Have you read all of the documentation that was included in your copy of Windows 7 to see if there is anything that mentions how to install the 64-bit version? There is no need to...
1 DVD has the 32bit version...the other one CONTAINS the 64bit version. Thanks for the replies. I see what happened. Definitely my fault for not reading the label more carefully. Thanks, patio. I was THINKING one disc had both. I think that is how the upgrade discs work. In any case, my DVD says on the front "32-bit software." I didn't notice that last night because the DVD was in my drive and I didn't think to GET it out, first. I definitely should "pay attention." Thanks again! You're more than Welcome...

Stop by anytime and Welcome to CH !

Solve : Missing kernals?

Answer»

I have both Windows vista and Windows 7. I bought Windows vista in the time period of the free upgrade, so for me vista lived up to is reputation of being a horrible OS. After 2 or 6, i mean 6 clean installs because the update function was a failure. Yet vista became stable, and i enjoyed using it. Then when i received my Windows 7 disc i jumped the gun and installed it right away. I only installed it right away due to the reviews of how stable it was, I should have remembered that Micro$oft has it in for me. After installing Windows 7 i DISCOVERED that it was NOT stable. Did a clean install of Vista again. I love vista, but fell in love with Windows 7's style. I installed Windows 7 again. Failer...AGAIN! Way to go Micro$oft! I honestly thought about buying a Mac from this point. Then i figured I'll just install Vista again. So i format my disk to do a clean install of Vista. I Receive a giant **** you with the blue SCREEN of death after my computer restarts to finish install. I try it again. My kernels... ARE MISSING! Just gone like POOF! I figure, lets not freak, I've got the oh so UNSTABLE Windows 7. I pop it in, I'm jumping though the normal hoops, activation code, clicking next and checking boxes. It gets HALF WAY though the install. The KERNALS, are MISSING! Like poof! Now i have a computer that cost me close to a 1000 $ including JUNK OS, and its not working! That money is the most money I've spent on a single thing since I'm only 15. Its so frustrating anymore. You spend money expecting a quality product and get crap. Yes Vista had its problems, yet an OS is very complicated. I can understand that having bugs, but the disc missing data! what the *censored*!
If anyone has any ideas who to send this horror story to please tell me. I would like to receive a new Vista and Windows 7 disc but knowing Microsoft i understand that its highly unlikely that i will get new discs. Any ideas at all are appreciated.
Your average disappointed Micro$oft user,
-NateWhats the exact error message? It could involve anything from RAM to drivers to an error writing from the CD when re-installing to PSU issues...so yes as jj stated the full message will get us closer.

I wouldn't jump the gun at this point and blame MS neccessarily...Im not sure. They may not be the ones to blame, Its just frustrating because this happens with most the products i consume from them. I will get the error codes tomarrow, as its 11:41 and IV got school in the morning. Thank you for the quick responses though.Someone will be here...
Sleep well.Ok its been a little bit longer than i wanted to take care of this. I am deeply detiermined to get to the bottom of this one way or another. I recently got the blue screen of death.
I did get the Vista to install and update to windows 7 running after i left my computer along for a night. this is the code i got of the BOD and caution there may be an extra zero or two in there, im not ENTIRELY sure. 0x00000051 (0x000000000000000001 0xfffff8a000e810 0x0000000081dd10 0x00000000000456.

If you are getting corrupt DOWNLOADS, "FIRE fox" and browser crashes, I would make sure your nic is working. One major problem my son had was finding a nic to work well with Win 7 X64, we WENT through a few and FINALLY managed a Dlink to work properly, others would not work, or crash the browser and give him 28k speeds on 2mb internet.

I have used Office 2003 on an XP version and was always able to see a list of all my document/excel etc files by selecting Open on the File menu. I am now using the same Office 2003 on a Vista and I cannot find how to see a list of all the documents I am working on. They seem to stay in Recent Documents for a few days then disappear and I can't find them again. Help please.
First, "Recent Documents" is not a title on any part of the menu structure for Office 2003, as far as I know. If you're asserting that it is, please state exactly where "Recent Documents" is seen.

Office 2007, on the other HAND, does use "Recent Documents" in its menu.

Regarding the selecting of files by selecting Open on the File menu, that shows ALL files in whatever directory/FOLDER you go to when you use the Open PANEL, not just the most recently used files. If the default folder is not where some of your files are located, then just navigate, via the Open panel, to the folder containing the file(s).

Solve : Windows 7 Read Only???????

Answer»

My problem is trying to move, copy or rename files from and to certain folders (example a program folder)

Windows tells me "I do not have permission to perform this action" on every action I listed above.

So I noticed the folder's attributes was set as "Read Only" automatically. This problem may have been caused by a program but not a virus because i have bitdefender.

So I switched the attribute off and it fixed the problem. BUT... now I NEED to know why the folder and other folders will set them self back to read only.

Also does anyone know what registry setting to change that might fix this or a group policy setting?

ATTACHED is a dxdiag file and a process list for my pc info.

Thanks in advance.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]The folders are not read only, it only appears they are. You just need to take ownership. Add this to the context menu to make it easy: http://www.blogsdna.com/2173/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htmok great thank you very much, i think it will fix it although there is two more things,

1. I am not sure if it will work untill I have to copy, rename, or move a file again and see that it gives me no errors.

2. Here is the important question.....why does my cousin never have this problem and he has the same build verion of windows 7 that I do?

Thanks again. You know, I'm not 100% sure. The permissions in 7 seem very finicky and arbitrary to me. I've had to take ownership of the same folders SEVERAL times. I've even run a very powerful utility (subinacl) that changes permissions of EVERYTHING - and still had to re-take ownership of some folders. I've seen similar complaints and issues on several boards. Either I don't completely understand the way permissions are implemented in 7 or they are a little buggy. But either way, aside from being a bit of a pain it's not that big an issue.ok and i also get an error that says file or window is open and in use in another process

which prevents me from doing the same tasks.

This sucks.Well, then it's probably open in another process. Without more details that's all I can tell you.no it was not in use... i beleive the problem is because there is a "in use" delay right after you copy, move or rename a file or folder. Now that delay on my specific OS is set to high or messed up.

It does sound vague to me to have a delay in windows but once i restart it goes away, which tells me it was just a delay.

It is not in use either because this happens after everyinstalled program or copied folder I want to change or delete or move.

Also note I have bitdefender 2009.Quote from: bigbutt100 on November 20, 2009, 11:26:25 AM

There is no Delay. when you reboot the file is no longer open. A process likely has the file open.

One way to find out is with SysInternals "process Explorer". use "find->handle or DLL" when the file seems locked to see if the file is open by anything.ok well that SOUNDS promising but would you want to have to do this everytime you install a program, move a file or folder, delete a recently moved/copied file or fiolder and or possibly want to rename that recently moved file?

All basic functions are not allowed sometimes...and its not just after a program i installed its after a file is moved or opened and If I want to delete that recently changed file/folder forget it. I will get an error ( file is open in another process) or you dont have permission to edit this file.

All I have to do is go back to vista or xp and this problem will be solved....Its to bad I can't return windows 7.

It's something with my processes that are listed in my first post. One process must be ALWAYS affecting this version of windows.

I install the exact same programs with every operating system I have.
Also I scan every day with bitdefender 2009.

Thanks in advance.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 20, 2009, 01:17:12 PM
There is no Delay.

If I wait about 20 mins with all windows closed Sometimes it allows me to change the file/folder (hence a possible delay)

Now lets keep my problem simple so let me re-state it:

I want to copy a random folder/file from my external hard drive to my internal hard drive (my desktop) Ok it copies it...

now without even using nor opening the file/folder I realise I dont want it...so I try to delete it..

I get no result with an error saying its still in use. (WHAT?) Or Ill succeed in deleting only the files inside the folder and not the folder itself.

Or say I want to replace it with the same file/folder because the new one is better.. I get the same error with this too??
??

ps. dont forget to look at my previous post.

thanks

I have a Dell inspiron 1501 laptop, vista home OS. For some reason I cannot paste, a hyperlink into a folder for use later on. Pictures and text are no problem. The link is below. As you see it can paste here but not in a folder.

http://three.flash-gear.com/npuz/puz.php?c=v&id=3497867&k=78198544

PeterFirst of all, a link or text would have to be pasted into a file before it can be saved in a folder. So, what type of file are you trying to paste to?

And, why did you post that particular hyperlink? What about other hyperlinks? Are you saying this one is the only one you can't copy and paste? That doesn't make sense. The link I enclosed is from a "jigsaw puzzle maker" which I include in my WEBSITE. I use Dreamweaver to upload the elements of my website. I WANTED to utilize the "jigsaw" in my December UPDATE. Generally you MUST put the pictures, video, audio or hyperlinks into, let's say the December folder, for use in updating the December part of my monthly website. I could copy the link but could not paste it in the "December folder" of Dreamweaver.
Hoping this makes a little more sense.
Peterwhat if you right click and choose:

new
shortcut
then past the information in the information box
give the link a name
click finish

If this is not what you are wanting to do please let us know.I tried copy shortcut but that did not open to what I needed. I tried "Save Target As" in the December folder and that did the trick.
Thanks for your help!!

Solve : Hard Drive space required for Windows 7?

Answer» SOYBEAN, I'm talking about Windows folder only. I think where a lot of the DIFFERENCE is coming in here, isn't from what we've installed, for one, page file sizes are going to vary, mine at default is near 10 gig on an X64 win 7 business install. I have 6 gb DDR2 ram currently. Not to mention X64 versions will support a higher page file than 32 versions. Also, it coincides with the 1.5 X amount of ram so this is normal. I add this up, 8 gigs install + 10 page file=18 gig install. So those with a bare 8 gig install either don't have page file, or bare min, or obviously a small amount of ram. Using the above example:

8G = Windows

10G = Pagefile

2 to 6G = Restore points

Approx 20 to 26G HDD space.

Plus the recommended 15% of free drive space for normal Windows operating...you can see where it adds up quite rapidly.

Personally i don't give it a 2nd thought with the cost and sizes of DRIVES today though...windows folder is 8.6GB. I have 8GB of RAM, my pagefile is 8489MB.

the pagefile is stored in the root DIRECTORY of the drive. NOT in the windows folder so it cannot be part of my windows folder.

the pagefile has NO BUSINESS being calculated as part of the OS install. Does MS determine the size of of the pagefile, or more precisely it's contents? No. Both are determined by RAM size, and besides, it can be changed. the 1.5x RAM thing is a misinformed guideline for the sake of a guideline; just read Windows Internals to find out why it's so misinformed.

That's not the point being made. It doesn't matter where it's stored, it's the point that it takes space on the drive and will vary per user. The page file statement was not directly aimed at actual space for Win 7, it was directed at the argument of how some have less space after the install or rather, use more hard drive space than the next person.

It may be misinformed, I agree, but for a very basic explanation, it works, no need to split the atom. I don't understand where you say about MS determining the pagefile size, the point is the size of the pagefile will vary.

My over all point is that the page file size, being part of the actual install or not, has an effect on the amount of space left over AFTER an install. It will affect what people see on their drive, space wise.
The 1.5 number was from back in the days where 356Mg was alot of RAM...
Once over 1G of RAM it becomes a misnomer.

Solve : Windows 7 on aspire one?

Answer»

few minutes ago, I installed a windows 7 professional EDITION on my aspire one.

That windows 7 is the same copy of windows 7 X86 that I used in the desktop that I am using right now. It is a genuine copy of windows 7 from the Microsoft academic alliance website in which I am a member. During that time, I don't have an access on the internet to activate the product key on the aspire so I asked my friend to bring it on their house to activate the product key. Unto my surprise, few minutes after we departed he said that the windows 7 activation failed because it says SOMETHING like it does not fit in the laptop? I used the same product key on both desktop and laptop.

Now I'm confused what to do. As far as I can remember(I'm not so sure though), that it was said in the MSDN documentation that I could install copies of the software more than once(there's a limit but I just dont know the exact possible installation try for it) as long as i dont use it commercially and that the computers where will I place it is mine.

Someone help me please? Do I need a new product key for the aspire because: it should only be installed in one pc? or because it is not compatible with the aspire? or simply, maybe by any chance i just mistyped the product key?

--the aspire is still with my friend few blocks away. although i could call him if you need more details about the current situation of the aspire. You can try Microsoft's activation phone number: (888) 571-2048 thanks for the reply Allan. I'll try to call them when i able to FIND a way to call them. I'm at the pacific and its night time here. By the way, is it possible that the product key would only be available in just one computer. I honestly havent tried using the OS those from the academic alliance account in two computers with the exact version and product key.

Solve : CHKDSK?

Answer»

I am running Windows 7 pro and every time I start up my computer It RUNS chkdsk. Why does it do this. And how can I STOP it?.Click Start, then Run ("Start search" in 7), type cmd, and click "Ok".
At the prompt in the command window that opens, type:
fsutil dirty query C:
and press "Enter".
Does the result of this indicate the drive is "Dirty"?
HEY Broni, the promt tells me this after I typed it in.....The fsutil utility requires you to have administrative privileges. I am new to windows 7 so I do not know how to aquire Adm privileges. But I would love to learn, lol.Open command prompt as administrator.
After typing "cmd" in "Start search", hold CTRL and SHIFT, then press Enter.OK, I followed your steps. It BROUGHT up the command promt really fast, I typed in what you told me to do last message but got the same answer? In Programs - Accessories right-click on the Command Prompt icon and choose "run as administrator", then follow the instructions above.

Also, in START - RUN you can type chkdsk /r and press ENTER. It will ask if you want to schedule the checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes and reboot.ok, That worked..... I says its not dirty. What now?Do you only have one drive / partition? If so, do as I said above REGARDING chkdsk /r

Solve : Different IP per tab (browsers)?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I've been FIGHTING with proxies, vpn's and such, trying to find the most CONFORTABLE way to navigate, having one tab with one IP address, and another tab with another IP address.

So far, I've been able to use my home IP for one tab, and the webvpn of my university in the other tab. If you are not familiar with this kind of webvpn, it allows you to log into the vpn, changing your IP for that one tab you logged in only.

I have another VPN I can connect to, but I can only connect to this one, by creating the network connection in the Network and Sharing Center, changing my ip for the whole machine.

Finally, what I would like to KNOW, is if there is any way I can connect to this last vpn, but restrict the IP it gives me, to only one browser (e.g. Have 87.xxx.xx.xxx on firefox and 193.xxx.xx.xxx on IE), or even better, one tab.

Best Regards,

keyboarderas far as I know that is a setting in the VPN service. Have you tried to contact the owner of this service and see if they can/will enable the option for you?

Solve : toshiba satellite c650 and Windows 7 Service Pack problems!?

Answer»

I came back from a nice weekend away to find a Toshiba laptop awaiting me for repair. The problem was simply, the service pack 1 install failed and making laptop to boot loop.
When booting up WINDOWS, The "Windows is loading files" loader appears, then a pop up says that the start up repair option is trying to find the OS. After a few seconds, I get this message "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically". So, I selected an option just below that which says "View advanced options for system recovery and support". This allows me to select the keyboard input type, which I select the UK method.
After selecting this, I get this error message "You must log in to access System Recovery Options.....". At this point, it should ask for a user and password, it does not. I press OK to restart and back to square 1.

The next thing I did to press F8 on boot to access the repair your computer option. This was still the same error message!

The other option I had was to boot from a Windows 7 cd for repair. Selected language and such at first and selected the Repair your computer option. From this, it searches for the OS on the HDD, it DETECTS as Windows 7 so I press next on there. After this, I see all the options to start up repair, system restore and such. I decided to select system restore! It found 1 system restore which I needed to help the laptop boot again, so I selected it. Now I have another pop up message saying "You must always restore the drive that contains Windows. Restoring other drivers is optional". System restore is now useless.

I tried to do a startup repair, no joy! chkdsk in cmd, no joy!

Some forums say that to press and hold the zero button is access the Toshiba utility to restore Windows. This does not work!

I have tried Hirens CD Boot to make the computer boot and such but NOPE!

I could just re-install Windows from a Windows 7 disk. However, I need some product KEYS for Microsoft Office and some others. I KNOW that Hirens CD does not have this sort of software to find this out.

Any ideas how to fix this laptop? Or to just get the products keys off for a refresh installation?

Thanks
