Solve : Windows Installer Service? |
Answer» It all started with a simple iTunes installation problem this evening. Since the Apple Software Update mechanism kept failing to download the new version of iTunes I downloaded it from my other computer and transferred it over via a flash drive. I TRIED to execute the Installer but after about 3 seconds a windows pops up saying "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support PERSONNEL for assistance." I tried everything I found to fix this including an attempt to reinstall the Windows Installer from the MS Support site but nothing is working. Also, I tried twice to do a system restore but each TIME it failed to do the restore. I really think malware isn't the problem here but I'm not declaring any facts. By the way, the MACHINE I'm trying to fix is an HP running 64-bit Vista. |

Solve : "Windows failed to start because the system registry file is missing or corrupt"? |
Answer» My computer will not boot... I keep getting the "windows failed to start because the system registry file is MISSING or corrupt"...I've tried going in safemode, last known configuration, etc. I also just tried the Vista recovery disc (32-bit) and it still won't work... There is a lot of stuff on my laptop I need, does anyone know how I can fix this without having to lose all of my info stored on my computer?? Boot to the Vista CD and use the repair option(s)I did that already...it still won't work. It says "unable to automatically fix problem.." or something ALONG those lines..I've restarted and still back to the same issue. Did you recently install or change any hardware or have any major errors or problems?I haven't installed anything lately...I did uninstall a game that my boyfriend had downloaded on here a while ago. I have had this problem once before, but when I clicked on STARTUP repair it worked...Nothing seems to work this time, not even the Windows Vista CD...Since you have Vista DVD, try repair installation: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.htmlThanks, I read through that, but I'm not sure I understand... It says "don't run Vista DVD on boot"... am I supposed to put it in when I get to the screen that tells me "windows has failed to start..etc" ? I cannot get past that screen... ?My bad. You can use that method only from within Vista. |

Solve : Windows 7 Error: System Reboots After Selecting "Start Windows Normally"? |
Answer» Hello, I appear to have a problem. I am on a Dell Inspiron 530, running good OLD Windows 7. You see, earlier today (Sunday/November/15/09) I have been experiencing some very odd activity with my computer. I went to check, via task manager if any processes were screwing around with my computer, and well I was right. Some trojans, spamming some junk via IE, so I did what I normally did, and ended the processes and deleted the executables from their directories. (If you're asking me why don't I have any anti virus, I do, I have AVG Internet Securitey, which doesn't work for some odd reason, I UNINSTALLED it). Then some crazy stuff started to happen. My screen went black for a couple of seconds, then I have somethings saying that some programs have stopped working, and crashed, and some I got fatal errors from. Then everything went back to normal, and things continued on like they usually do until....BSOD, and a restart. At that point, I have figured it was probably one of those trojans, but I doubt those nasty trojans could have the audacity of giving me a BSOD. |

Solve : Another Dual Boot question? |
Answer» My mobo is a Gigabyte MA790XXT-UD4P. Is this capapble of booting from more than ONE hard drive? If so how do I set it up so that I get a boot menu asking me which version to boot? I have windows 7 Ultimate on one hard drive and Windows XP Professional (both full retail version). It was my understanding that both OS's had to be installed on one drive, the oldest installed on the first partition. Not necessarily. Two hard drives can be used for this. Quote from: RudeDawg on November 28, 2009, 07:01:07 PM Right now I manually plug in and unplug the power and data cables depending on which OS I want to boot. How did you install the two OS's? See this reference, which should apply to XP and Windows 7, same as for XP and Vista: How do I... Install Windows Vista in a dual-boot configuration along with Windows XP?I installed 7 first. During installation I missed the opportunity to create extra partitions so 7 got the full 320 Gb on that disk. A week later I wanted to see how XP would work on a machine powerful enough to let it run free. Knowing how to partition with XP I set up 2x 80 Gb partitons on the second 320 Gb disk, one each for XP and 7 leaving the remainder intactfor storage. I then installed XP on the first 80 Gb partition.Quote from: RudeDawg on November 29, 2009, 09:49:58 AM Knowing how to partition with XP I set up 2x 80 Gb partitons on the second 320 Gb disk, one each for XP and 7 leaving the remainder intactfor storage. I then installed XP on the first 80 Gb partition.OK, if you disconnect the other HD, you should be able to install Windows 7 on the second 80GB partition of the HD on which you already have Win XP installed. That should create a dual boot setup that provides you the choice of OS when STARTING your computer. The screen that SHOWS the two OS would be SHOWING the Win 7 you installed on the second 80GB partition of the HD on which you already have Win XP installed. At this point, if you have no interest in keeping Win 7 on the other HD, you could delete it and use the full drive for storage.Great! Thanx for the advice. After using 7 for 2 weeks methinks me will end up keeping the dual boot. 7 just doesn't impress me as much as it frustrates me!Have a great day!Not sure what this means but Good LUCK....Quote from: RudeDawg on November 29, 2009, 02:46:20 PM Great! Solve : black screen of death on vista? |
Answer» Okay.... so my friend asked me to work on his laptop for him, and I agreed because I usually fix everything pretty fast, but this one has me stumped. When you START up Windows, it goes through the loading screen, then to a blank black screen with a cursor. The login screen never comes up. I went through all of the fixes, such as registry edits, and nothing WORKED. I think it has something to do with the USB ports, because this is the weird part. With nothing plugged in the ports, it stays on the windows load screen for about 10 seconds, then goes to the solid black. If there is something in the USB port, it will stay on the loading screen forever. As soon as I remove the USB device, the black screen comes up. I checked bios and made sure that it's boothing from the hard drive and not USB, so I'm at a loss... any ideas? |

Solve : rebuilding the paging file? |
Answer» Mine as well, ANYBODY can finish that sentence anyway they want. It still works. My main page file is static (size unchanging), in its own partition on a separate drive from the Windows partition. That partition is the first on the drive, at the outer edge of the platters. It is twice my RAM size but I also have a small (512 MB) static swap file on the system (C:\) partition. I experimented by changing the settings so I had a Windows managed page file on the C partition (20 GB of unfragmented free space) and it was a bit more sluggish when for example I had Firefox* open with about 8 tabs and I started another memory hungry app (Xnews). Of course playing around with settings is fun and can be instructive, but there are no magic settings which will make up for not having enough RAM for your usage pattern . Bottom line, leave the pagefile alone. Pretty much anything you read in forums about adjusting the size of the pagefile is absolute nonsense. Probably good advice, i've got all confused now, i've printed some pages out, which tells you all about the "pageing file" so i'll have a good read on it and learn a little more...... thanks allan Quote from: Salmon Trout on November 11, 2009, 12:46:21 AM
Thanks salmon trout, i'll save this and might try it... Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 10, 2009, 06:28:15 PM SysInternals has a tool that defragments the page file at boot. I think it was called "PageDefrag". It takes forever though and I certainly didn't see much of an improvement. This is only to complie information Whats your views or anybody else's on using "mydefrag" http://www.mydefrag.com/ and following this artical here http://www.mydefrag.com/FAQSpecialFiles-HowDoIDefragmentCpagefile.systheSwapfile.html |

Solve : Windows 7 backup - Norton - Acronis? |
Answer» HELLO. I use Windows 7. And I need to make a backup copy of it. I know that there are programs such as Norton Ghost 15 - Acronis .... etc.. To do so. My question is in the Windows 7 there is the POSSIBILITY of making a backup copy of the system: 1-- Is there a difference between the Windows 7 (making a backup copy) and those programs (Norton - Acronis) 2-- What is the bestThere is a difference between a backup and an image. The two utilities you named create disk images - essentially a "snap shot" of the entire hd (or partition, whichever you choose). If you want to restore that image at some point, the entire system (or partition) will be as it was when you created the image. The internal tools create backups of certain files. Disk imaging also allows you to restore only certain files if you like. Personally, I wouldn't run a system without Acronis True Image and I've always said I think EVERYONE should use a disk imaging utility on a regular basis.dir allan I understand from your reply. That Windows 7 takes a backup copy of the file or files. Image attachment with my reply . Explain this feature for Windows. It says that backup. Contains the system. Programs I think that Norton and Acronis have the same possibility of Windows 7 in the establishment of the backup Am I wrong. Or not. Please ROUTER (my English is not good. Sorry) Note: the latest version of Acronis postcard beaches feature. Acronis transfer program files( acronis backup ) to Windows backup and VICE versa [Saving space, attachment deleted by admin] |

Solve : Windows 7 Boot Problems? |
Answer» I tried to up GRADE my Vista to Windows but as the diagnostic on Win 7 seemed to believe I had programmes that would not run on Win7 and they were programmes I could not UN install or delete, I decided to install Win 7 on another hard drive on my MACHINE. I now need to delete the Vista installation on the original hard drive...HOW? I have tried disconnecting the Vista hard drive but the machine fails to boot up even though it can see the Win 7 hard drive. It would seem that I need to make the Win 7 a bootable hard drive and stop the Vista had drive being bootable. If Vista was installed first and you delete the partition 7 will no longer boot and you'll have to re-install it...Sad but True! Really Sad But thanks for the adviceState more clearly your goals of how you want this machine set up and we can advise further...Thank you for this information. I had this problem and thank you for the information. I have a Dell XPS720H2o that came with Vista 32 and a added Windows7 Ultimate 64 to another SATA Disk when It came out. I like WIndows7 so much more that I took the Vista 32 Disk out of the computer and replaced it with a new formated disk and I got a "shock" The system did not boot up into WIndows7 as expected.... instead iI got the following error HTLDR is missing I thought there must be something I did not know about the Dell BIOS to set the WIndows7 as the default OS but it is the default as per the Windows7 OS and Easy BCD. I guess I am just screwed!!!! as I have to devote one internal SATA port to "History" Here is my question.... can I replace the 32 bit Vista with a 64 bit Vista of course a a new install? so that I can at least use it with the 8gb of ram Thank you again for SHARING your knowledge of this David Quote from: WDLees on November 26, 2009, 09:09:58 PM Thank you for this information. I had this problem and thank you for the information. I have a Dell XPS720H2o that came with Vista 32 and a added Windows7 Ultimate 64 to another SATA Disk when It came out. I like WIndows7 so much more that I took the Vista 32 Disk out of the computer and replaced it with a new formated disk and I got a "shock" David, First of all welcome to the forum. Secondly you need to start your own thread so that you can get individualized help. And third, you need to post the CORRECT error - it is NOT HTLDR that is missing but NTLDR.Sorry for not stating the correct error... Yes the error was NTLDR Is there any work around to this requirement that if Vista was installed first... that Vista must be present for Windows7 to Boot. It would seem that a lot of others set up a dual boot of Vista and Windows7 and now may want to delete Vista. Beside a new install of Windows7 it would seem that there must be a way to fix this. Is it in the BIOS or in how Windows7 was installed as a dual boot.... it is hard to grasp the WHY Quote from: mroilfield on November 27, 2009, 06:04:56 AM David, |

Solve : rename computer Windows 7? |
Answer» I am just checking to see if anyone is having the same issue. When I try and rename a windows 7 system I get an error message that the account already exists. The only way I can get the change to work is by deleting the account from AD, changing the name, restarting the system, log in to the system, move the account from the default ou, and reset up the account information. Is there a way around windows trying to add it's self to the domain? This is really annoying when you are talking about having to do this for around 140 to 150 COMPUTERS in my area alone. |

Solve : Missing kernals? |
Answer» I have both Windows vista and Windows 7. I bought Windows vista in the time period of the free upgrade, so for me vista lived up to is reputation of being a horrible OS. After 2 or 6, i mean 6 clean installs because the update function was a failure. Yet vista became stable, and i enjoyed using it. Then when i received my Windows 7 disc i jumped the gun and installed it right away. I only installed it right away due to the reviews of how stable it was, I should have remembered that Micro$oft has it in for me. After installing Windows 7 i DISCOVERED that it was NOT stable. Did a clean install of Vista again. I love vista, but fell in love with Windows 7's style. I installed Windows 7 again. Failer...AGAIN! Way to go Micro$oft! I honestly thought about buying a Mac from this point. Then i figured I'll just install Vista again. So i format my disk to do a clean install of Vista. I Receive a giant **** you with the blue SCREEN of death after my computer restarts to finish install. I try it again. My kernels... ARE MISSING! Just gone like POOF! I figure, lets not freak, I've got the oh so UNSTABLE Windows 7. I pop it in, I'm jumping though the normal hoops, activation code, clicking next and checking boxes. It gets HALF WAY though the install. The KERNALS, are MISSING! Like poof! Now i have a computer that cost me close to a 1000 $ including JUNK OS, and its not working! That money is the most money I've spent on a single thing since I'm only 15. Its so frustrating anymore. You spend money expecting a quality product and get crap. Yes Vista had its problems, yet an OS is very complicated. I can understand that having bugs, but the disc missing data! what the *censored*! |

Solve : Viewing 2003 Office Files on Vista? |

I am now using the same Office 2003 on a Vista and I cannot find how to see a list of all the documents I am working on. They seem to stay in Recent Documents for a few days then disappear and I can't find them again. Help please.First, "Recent Documents" is not a title on any part of the menu structure for Office 2003, as far as I know. If you're asserting that it is, please state exactly where "Recent Documents" is seen. Office 2007, on the other HAND, does use "Recent Documents" in its menu. Regarding the selecting of files by selecting Open on the File menu, that shows ALL files in whatever directory/FOLDER you go to when you use the Open PANEL, not just the most recently used files. If the default folder is not where some of your files are located, then just navigate, via the Open panel, to the folder containing the file(s). |

Solve : Windows 7 Read Only??????? |
Answer» My problem is trying to move, copy or rename files from and to certain folders (example a program folder) no it was not in use... i beleive the problem is because there is a "in use" delay right after you copy, move or rename a file or folder. Now that delay on my specific OS is set to high or messed up. There is no Delay. when you reboot the file is no longer open. A process likely has the file open. One way to find out is with SysInternals "process Explorer". use "find->handle or DLL" when the file seems locked to see if the file is open by anything.ok well that SOUNDS promising but would you want to have to do this everytime you install a program, move a file or folder, delete a recently moved/copied file or fiolder and or possibly want to rename that recently moved file? All basic functions are not allowed sometimes...and its not just after a program i installed its after a file is moved or opened and If I want to delete that recently changed file/folder forget it. I will get an error ( file is open in another process) or you dont have permission to edit this file. All I have to do is go back to vista or xp and this problem will be solved....Its to bad I can't return windows 7. It's something with my processes that are listed in my first post. One process must be ALWAYS affecting this version of windows. I install the exact same programs with every operating system I have. Also I scan every day with bitdefender 2009. Thanks in advance.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 20, 2009, 01:17:12 PM There is no Delay. If I wait about 20 mins with all windows closed Sometimes it allows me to change the file/folder (hence a possible delay) Now lets keep my problem simple so let me re-state it: I want to copy a random folder/file from my external hard drive to my internal hard drive (my desktop) Ok it copies it... now without even using nor opening the file/folder I realise I dont want it...so I try to delete it.. I get no result with an error saying its still in use. (WHAT?) Or Ill succeed in deleting only the files inside the folder and not the folder itself. Or say I want to replace it with the same file/folder because the new one is better.. I get the same error with this too?? ?? ps. dont forget to look at my previous post. thanks |

Solve : Hard Drive space required for Windows 7? |
Answer» SOYBEAN, I'm talking about Windows folder only. I think where a lot of the DIFFERENCE is coming in here, isn't from what we've installed, for one, page file sizes are going to vary, mine at default is near 10 gig on an X64 win 7 business install. I have 6 gb DDR2 ram currently. Not to mention X64 versions will support a higher page file than 32 versions. Also, it coincides with the 1.5 X amount of ram so this is normal. I add this up, 8 gigs install + 10 page file=18 gig install. So those with a bare 8 gig install either don't have page file, or bare min, or obviously a small amount of ram. Using the above example: 8G = Windows 10G = Pagefile 2 to 6G = Restore points Approx 20 to 26G HDD space. Plus the recommended 15% of free drive space for normal Windows operating...you can see where it adds up quite rapidly. Personally i don't give it a 2nd thought with the cost and sizes of DRIVES today though...windows folder is 8.6GB. I have 8GB of RAM, my pagefile is 8489MB. the pagefile is stored in the root DIRECTORY of the drive. NOT in the windows folder so it cannot be part of my windows folder. the pagefile has NO BUSINESS being calculated as part of the OS install. Does MS determine the size of of the pagefile, or more precisely it's contents? No. Both are determined by RAM size, and besides, it can be changed. the 1.5x RAM thing is a misinformed guideline for the sake of a guideline; just read Windows Internals to find out why it's so misinformed. Quote the pagefile is stored in the root directory of the drive. NOT in the windows folder so it cannot be part of my windows folderQuote the pagefile has NO BUSINESS being calculated as part of the OS install. That's not the point being made. It doesn't matter where it's stored, it's the point that it takes space on the drive and will vary per user. The page file statement was not directly aimed at actual space for Win 7, it was directed at the argument of how some have less space after the install or rather, use more hard drive space than the next person. Quote Does MS determine the size of of the pagefile, or more precisely it's contents? No. Both are determined by RAM size, and besides, it can be changed. the 1.5x RAM thing is a misinformed guideline for the sake of a guideline; just read Windows Internals to find out why it's so misinformed. It may be misinformed, I agree, but for a very basic explanation, it works, no need to split the atom. I don't understand where you say about MS determining the pagefile size, the point is the size of the pagefile will vary. My over all point is that the page file size, being part of the actual install or not, has an effect on the amount of space left over AFTER an install. It will affect what people see on their drive, space wise. The 1.5 number was from back in the days where 356Mg was alot of RAM... Once over 1G of RAM it becomes a misnomer. |
