What software is SCANNING and what browser are you USING?Mozilla Firefox. AVG scans and then Windows seems to ALSO SCAN, after which it configures. (excuse my ignorance!)

Solve : Windows 7 wont load past start up screen?

Answer»

My windows 7 will not load past the start up SCREEN...I was able to get into safe mode and try to restore and repair and neither worked. I ended up backing up my files just in CASE I CANT get this problem fixed. I will add though that my BATTERY is dead and often falls off the back of the computer...I have read something about battery ISSUES being a cause of start up problems....other then that I have no idea what to do and my gut is telling me there has to be something I can do and that my computer should still be functional...HELP please lolHow were you able to back up files when you can't get Windows running?

What happened to your computer that lead to the problem of the battery falling off?

Have tried removing the battery and then starting your computer with it plugged in to a wall outlet? have you try last good configuration

Solve : How can I expand my C drive??

Answer»

I NEED to expand my c drive, since there is only 8% of free space left. And my E drive has much free space left. So, how can add the free space of my E drive to my C drive? I really need to install a large program on my computer. Please, help me add the free space quickly. Thank you very much!!! Can you specify installation to the E: drive instead of C: drive? Through a custom path?

Also is there data that is not installed programs but music and videos etc that can be moved to the E: drive to free up space at the C: drive?

Your bound to the limits of the C: drive. There is an ability to span C: among multiple drives, but I highly advise not to span drives as for if one drive fails they both fail etc.

Most of the time there is data at the C: drive that can be moved to an alternate drive, burned to disc's if not needed to eat up storage capacity, or simply delete data that is old and no longer needed. Even going to Windows Add/Remove programs and removing software that is no longer needed and then rebooting before installing a new program can free up space on C:There are always two ways for you to expand this C drive successfully:

1). Back up EVERYTHING IMPORTANT, shrink E partition in Disk Management and right click this C drive to EXTEND it there.

2). Some partition resizing tools like GParted, IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free and EaseUS Partition Master, etc, can be the chance to go on.

Note: Always make data BACKUPS before the resizing process in case of data loss.

Solve : Windows 7 - Medion Laptop showing 4 small desktop screens on start up?

Answer»

I have a Medion laptop with Windows 7 ultimate installed, eveything was working ok last night. Today when I turn't on the laptop the screen loaded like 4 times one under the other, I dont think the system is loaded 4 times but dont know for sure. But If I try to use the laptop just a little as the GRAPHICS are very small the laptop seems to function ok.

I use mostly firefox for BROWSING, Nortons Anti-virus, Malware & super anti-malware.

I INSTALL all microsoft updates regularly & any other software such as Java etc.

The laptop also starts with the black screen display & runs through the normal start up process & I can enter my Password & start the laptop.

I did have a PROBLEM a month or so go with the display icons being very large & this still sometimes happens, I think this maybe a problem with the Nvidea graphics card/driver.

The main problem is the current display, its also hard to try & correct this as everything is very small.

Can anyone please help to get me back to one screen on start up so I can use the laptop again?

I've attached a picture which is similar to how my display is.

Thanks Dave

Solve : No sound on Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi, I just installed Windows 7, 32bit, on my computer and I do not have sound. I will be in brief and this is what I did as troubleshooting to know the issue, before posting on this forum:

-I already checked the volume.
-I DOWNLOADED and installed the latest driver on my motherboard's website (ASUS.
-I played a music and I saw it was playing but no sound.
-Speaker is my default sound device.

Help me! Thank1) Was this a reinstall of W7 or an upgrade? If an upgrade, are you CERTAIN your system is W7 compatible? If it was a reinstall, what was the REASON?

2) Please look in device manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?
No yellowvor any sign on device manager. I formatted then installed. I mean it's a fresh installation. Again, why did you install - did you upgrade from a different OS or was there some problem with your previous Windows 7 installation?Well i installed because i wanted to use 7 on this computer. I had vista before. Then i formatted and installed 7 .What is the make and model of your computer? Did you check to see if your system is W7 compatible first? See these two links:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware-compatible-windows#1TC=windows-7

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements

Also, you need Windows 7 drivers.Yes it is compatible the motherboard. It's ASUS P5KPL-CM. Yes I downloaded Windows 7 drivers. Are you sure the sound is not "muted" in Control Panel ? ?

Speakers plugged in properly ? ?It is not mute. Everything is connected properly. There are 2 AUDIO drivers for that MBoard for Win7...
Install both of them...Windows will ignore the one it doesn't need.

However i would DLoad and install the chipset driver 1st and re-boot as some onboard drivers are reliant on the correct chipset driver being in place and installed properly. When I installed both driver versions, they gave me the same problem message. Refer to the screenshot attached.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Did you try the Chipset driver 1st and reboot as suggested ? ?
It also looks like that driver is from VIA...not ASUS....that could be the issue as well.Yes i installed that chipset driver from asus website and rebooted since yesterday. And the VIA drivers are from the ASUS site ? ?
If so your sound chip is dead.Well all i know installed all drivers from ASUS sites. I didnt have any issue with the Vista. I want to give a try on VIA website but i dont know my VIA model.

Solve : No sound on Windows 7 (32 bit)?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I am having a weird sound issue on Windows 7. Well, I am not hearing any sound from my SPEAKER. In other words, I hear nothing!

Some TROUBLESHOOTING I did are as FOLLOWS:

-Yes, my driver is updated! I updated it via device manager and I even checked the last audio version driver on my motherboard's site.
-Yes, I checked the sound icon on my taskbar. It is NOT mute and speaker's slider is fully 100%.
-Yes, my speaker is set to default as Playback!
-Yes, all levels are 100% on the Speaker Properties.
-There is no issue on device manager. I mean no exclamation mark or any yellow icon. Everything is OK.
-I have even disabled the audio on device manager and enabled it after 15 minutes, again no sound.
-I even rolled back driver on device manager, again no sound.
-I uninstalled the driver, installed again and rebooted, but the issue persists. I did it with both my motherboard's driver for audio and the Microsoft Windows automatic driver. No sound!
-I am using a speaker where the cord is plugged on the green jack in rear. It has always been there. However, on the speaker interface, the green jack is greyed. It does recognize other jacks, except the green is greyed. (Refer to screenshot)
-Also, when I play a media, it does detect it as the green slider is moving. (Refer to screenshot)

My specs:

ASUS P5KPL-CM
VIA audio

I hope I have mentioned the necessary details here. I did get this issue before, many months ago, but I did not remember how I solved it. Help please, because as an IT guy myself, I am becoming mad. I do not WANT to reinstall my OS for such a stupid issue.

So, experts who are here...help me!

Thank you!

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Not SURE what greyed means...do the speakers work ? ?Of course they work. Greyed here I mean look the screenshot, it is not detected.HuHH ? ? SPDIF is greyed...not the speakers.

BTW Stereo mix is turned all the way down...
Kinda may have something to do with your issues...Dude, look the Rear Panel on the left. Not the stereo thing.

Normally, the lime must be detected. But it is not! And the slider of the stereo is up. I did try it before.Dude...i wish you luck.I don't believe in luck. But thanks! You may wanna try someting other than that VIA mixer app...just sayin.Ok problem solved. I disabled the front jack detection. Seriously, I badly need a drink. RUM! Thank you guys.Awful interesting this is your 2nd time down this futile path...

Solve : No "Device ready to Eject" Message Cloud?

Answer»

This really isn't a big deal but....when I eject a USB device I get the "ok to eject icon" but I do not get the written message in a cloud. My SIL's rig runs the same Win 7 OS and she gets a neat LITTLE written message in a cloud telling you it is ok to eject. Ask her if she is...

Sorry, but the only thing she can tell me is if her PC is plugged in. I did find the ANSWER though. Looks like I will have to make a change to the registry which I am not going to bother doing. Solve : Sony vaio laptop hard drive failure?

Answer»
Hard drive failed.
I purchased new hard drive and installed.

How do I make this computer alive?

Thank YOUYOU will need to install your OS. I hope you have the disk.I believe OS was in the hard drive.
So, I need to buy window 7 and install it?
Or Sony vaio company could provide the OS oruginally installed on it?

If I buy window 7, could I install it in several computer?
Because I have a desk computer which need upgrade (window VISTA installed)These questions are often asked.
Microsoft, the maker of Windows, sells a license to run Windows on just one computer. Volume pricing is only for very large antiquates for one company.

When anyone first uses a new computer, he should make a backup copy of the OS for use in case of a failure. If the computer is still under warranty, the computer maker should replace both the hard drive and the Operating System.

Can you locate the the Product Key for the computer?
Here is what a product key might look like:
http://panam.gateway.com/s/software/MICROSOF/7515086/7515086mvr12.shtml
Can you find it?

A) HDD's do not ship with an OS installed...
B) If the PC has a COA sticker on it you can DLoad and re-install 7 for no charge...
C) You cannot buy Win7 and install it on more than 1 PC unless you buy a volume package...Geek-9pm

Yes, I located product key.
However the computer is out of warranty.

Hi Patio,
What is COA ?
Please, see photo below.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]COA means the PC has a legit Windows liscense...i don't see that in your pic...The COA could be on a sticker somewhere else on your computer.Look for Windows COA inside battery compartment.COA = Certificate of Authenticity. Or Sony vaio company could provide the OS oruginally installed on it?
They PROBABLY can provide that; most PC manufacturers do so. They may charge a small fee but it will be much less than the cost of buying Windows on the retail market. They would need to know the model # and serial # for your computer. I myself didn't experience any problems with my last TWO laptops (both from Sony).

I hope things worked out for you.Ummm...he hasn't been back since February...

Solve : microsoft silverlight?

Answer»

Not even sure if this is the right place, it might not be a computer issue, but rather a website issue. When I went to discovercard.com to PAY a bill, a window popup for Microsoft Silverlight asking to allow it permission to CHANGE (or something like that), but it wont let me click allow or not allow. It simply freezes the page, so I have to go through TASK manager and close the window. All the other pages I visit are just fine. So I don't know if this is something I need to do internally or if it's the website (discover) which has the problem? any thoughts? thanksI can't make sense of your post since https://www.discover.com/ (discovercard.com) does not use Silverlight. Do you visit sites that actually use Silverlight? If not, then I suggest you uninstall it. thanks, I don't know if I use sights with Silverlight or not, when I tried to log in that's when it popped up and froze everything. So I think uninstall is a good option. Appreciate the answer. Thanks againIf you encounter a website that uses it, you'll be alerted that Silverlight is required to view certain content on the page and you could reinstall it if necessary. Silverlight was Microsoft's attempt to make inroads against Adobe's Flash but it never gained WIDE acceptance among web developers. The only web pages I've encountered for the LAST 2 years or so that used it, as I recall, were some Microsoft pages. Thanks for the tips, I uninstalled it, no more problems. feel free to close.

Solve : How do I flip my computer display so it's mirrored??

TYVM Salmon! You are my hero! Just one last question. Is it possible to do this for VIDEOS?

Thank! Trying to solve this same problem for a different reason - wanting to watch exercise/dance videos and powerpoints mirrored so that I can copy the moves directly as if in a mirror. I'll try this for powerpoints etc - For videos, you can use VLC media player which has an option to play in mirrored format and is a great little player with no fat anyway. You have to set the mirrored option before beginning to play, I think.
Quote from: Techman113 on January 04, 2012, 04:25:31 PM
why cant you just go into control panel
type display into the search box
you will see change screen orientation
click that choose a flipped orientation and click OK

That just rotates it 180 degrees so it's upside down. That's a function for projectors that are mounted upside down on a ceiling.

What he wants to do is have the image reverse horizontally so it looks backward when you look at the screen, but forward when looking in a mirror.

Fun fact: This is a common practice on OLDER and larger upright arcade arcade cabinets. An out-of-sight TV screen with a reverse image is facing upward reflecting off of a mirror where the player sees it from. This gives the cabinet a lower center of gravity so the machine can't be tipped over as easily. It also adds more depth to the player view. The download link for the software in not working. I was wondering if anyone has this file (pvcmirror.exe) to share. I know this thread is a little bit outdated, if the sharing of this utility is not possible are there any software with similar function that is currently available for download.

Hoping for a quick response. Thanks.Quote from: Salmon Trout on January 03, 2012, 03:40:12 PM

There are LCD monitors for people who want to watch TV in the bath tub.
The mirror option lets you see the TV in the bath room mirror.

Thanks anyway The reason you would want to mirror your computer monitor is to recreate a mirror effect much like an arcade gaming cabinet, or in my case, to use your laptop monitor display screen as a teleprompter. This program will mirror, Not flip your computers laptop monitor display screen. HMU on FB or instagram. https://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/download.aspNo, it does not do what it says. It MEANS replicate rather than mirror.
The Optical mirror action can be done in hardware on analog monitors. You just reverse the vertical and horizontal sweep.

Solve : Huge file cannot be deleted?

Answer»

I was working with Adobe Premier Pro to edit some videos. In one of the projects, there was one huge file (2.01GB) created, which I cannot delete. At first I thought it was one of those temporary files, but it still cannot be deleted after I reboot, or even in Safe Mode.

The is very odd.
Do you have a good Anti Virus INSTALLED?

There is a set of programs that can do a 'move on boot' action.
That might be the best way to resolve your problem.
Here is a download for a free program.
Emco MoveOnBoot

Does that help? Hi GEEK,

I have AVG 2015 on my machine.

I downloaded and installed Emco MoveOnBoot but the program doesn't launch, i.e. it prompts WHETHER I want to allow the program to make changes to my computer blah blah blah, but after I click yes, nothing happens. Hi Geek, I found this clip on Youtube showing how to tackle this issue.

However, at the step to rename the file/folder, I get an error that "The system cannot find the file specified."

Then I tried to delete it straightaway INSTEAD of rename it first, it works! So we can mark this as fixed.

What to do?How for off is the time? Many Hours? Wrong date?

Did you mean you replaced the CELL for the RTC, real time clock?
If that cell FAILS, the clock will lose time. But if the cell test good, the clock circuit has been damaged. And you would have to get in contact with HP to see if there is a way to fix it.
This article might apply to your laptop.

Solve : 3-inch black band to the left of display on my HP 2159m LCD monitor?

Answer»

I downloaded the DRIVER for this monitor but no clue where to make adjustments so the screen display fills the entire screen edge to edge instead of that 3 inches of black to the left. Windows 7, NO IDEA about the other details you ask for. The highest resolution AVAILABLE in my screen options is 1024 x 768 but recommended resolution for this monitor says it should be 1920 x 1080. The hertz matches (60) and it is on 32 bit true setting. Help?? THanks, and can you please email me individually Also there is no category for MONITORS and I WONDER where this inquiry should be placed other than windows 7? You say 1024 x 768 ? That is terrible. Is this monitor new? Under warranty?
You mean the monitor driver, not the GPU driver.
May I suggest you remove the monitor drive completely. Then reboot and let Windows install a generic driver for the monitor.

Solve : Excel and Internet open at same time?

Answer»

Hi Everybody

How can I have both excel and an internet site open in the screen at the same time. and How can I extract data from the internet site and post it in Excel while excel is still open. and without have either window CLOSING?Are you looking to automate copy/pasting of information from a website into an excel document, so that the system on its own gathers info?

If so I would go with a MACRO tool such as Jitbit Macro Recorder. But it costs money. It worked really well. I have owned this software for over 7 years now and love it. I have used this in the past for redundant processes and info gathering from eTrade to be populated into Excel etc for custom graphs etc.

An even better method would be to write code that would PARSE a website for info and create a CSV FILE as its output which can be imported to Excel easily.

Any specific reason why both windows need to be open at the same time?I mean no offense but your question is so elementary that I see a need for some info about your level of knowledge. Do you not understand how to open more than one program at the same time? Are you unfamiliar with how to minimize an open program window to the taskbar and then open another program, leaving the first program open but minimized? And, do know nothing about copy and paste procedures?
Soybean is right, it seems elementary.
However, that kind of questions is being asked by others too.

Solve : error message on laptop?

Answer»

error message comes up on LAPTOP, saying have lost connection to internet, CLOSE PROGRAM, yet have not lost connection.Welcome to the forum.

For some users, occasional lose of connection happens almost daily. You browser keeps track of PAGES that do not change and will reload them as needed. This can make it seem that the connection was not broken.

This is more serious when you have an secure connection, like doing online banking. In that case a break in the connection MEANS you must to start the sign-in over again.

Just a guess, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) may have had a reason break the connection.

Solve : Wireless network card drivers not working with win7?

Answer»

My computer wouldn't start so I had to replace the motherboard and cpu. But now the wireless network card isn't working. I reinstalled the latest driver from the official website for the model I had and the card still fails to be listed in device manager.

I'm now getting the following errors on startup:

AirGCFG.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll

WZCSLDR2.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point apsInitialize could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll

Network Card:
D-Link DWL-G510

Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H

Does anyone know what I can do to get thr wireless card working? I never had an issue with it before I changed the motherboard. Thanks.
What was the nature of the prior board failing? Struck by lightning, power supply failure, etc?

Its quite possible that the wireless adapter is bad, damaged by the prior build that the motherboard died on.

If you need wireless networking and don't want to bother with a card. You can pick up a USB Wireless Adapter pretty cheap these days such as at Newegg, Tiger Direct, or another online store that sells computer parts and accessories. I even added one of these to an old Dell laptop that had a single USB 1.1 slot, which ran Windows XP SP2 and the wireless adapter allowed for this laptop to have wifi. These same adapters can also be used in desktop computers to connect them to a wireless network. My daughters Core 2 Duo E4500 system for example is connected via a 5 year old Netgear USB network adapter to Wireless-G because I didn't want to drill holes in the walls and floor/ceiling to route Cat5e cable.

For less than $15 these USB network adapters can be picked up online and they work well in the home. If you were connected to wifi from a specific location in your home prior, they work fine, however due to their compact design they lack the RANGE of other better USB adapters or INTERNAL Card Adapters due to antenna length and transmission strength. My Pentium III Dell Laptop with the USB NIC I was able to see open networks to connect to that showed 1 bar strength in a college town for example, but while the adapter was able to see the wireless router/access points, it wasn't able to yell loud enough to make its radio signal voice heard by these network devices. * So if you have a good signal in your home you would probably have no troubles with this USB NIC option because its radio signal voice to router or access point can be heard by the device serving up the wifi.UPDATE: Decided to look through reviews on this motherboard and there may be a BIOS version BUG
Quote

Pros: Good price for what you get
HDMI out
Mostly plug and play

Cons: Only three SATA ports (but I did know before buying)
BIOS revision didn't like my wireless adapter
No jumper on the BIOS RESET leads? Really?

Other Thoughts: I replaced a premium board with this one so most of the shortfalls are not FAIR to compare; you get what you pay for feature wise.

However, using Linux I found wonky usb issues with the bios revision it shipped with. Just make sure you flash the bios to the latest revision and everything seems to work great now. (you'll note most of the updates were for usb device compatibility. PLUS, a usb drive is detected as a floppy so updating it was a PURE breeze.

As seen here at the Aaron R post in which he states ... "Flash Before Using " = BIOS to newest firmware version before using
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128072

Hope this helps... it might save you from having to buy a new wireless adapter only having to flash your BIOS to latest edition. Thanks for the responses. You went above and beyond, checking motherboard reviews for me. I really appreciate it, I never thought to do that. I was considering the wireless adapter but I was worried about the range. The router is on the other side of the house and I had to purchase a large antenna to screw into the wireless card in order to receive a reliable connection.

I see the option to "qflash" when I boot, is this what I'm looking for? I suppose I need to move the computer over to the router so I can plug in the ethernet and download the update? I ended up getting an adapter and it works well. Thanks again. No problem... Glad your back up and running again.

What is the Plug-in software and how can I see or enable the Plug-in ( e.g. I knew I had D/L the Java but I don't know how to enable it ). Also please ADVISE why they said the Plug-in is not secured in the Internet and how can I avoid the risk. Thank you very much indeed.

Solve : A strange icon popping up.?

Answer»

Hello, lately i have been having problems with my computer shutting off. I know it is not over heating seeing as though my computer is cool and my fan is on high right next to it.

However today i seen a icon in my taskbar with 3 green bars with a black OUTLINE right before it shut off.

I find it suspicious and think a virus is wandering around in my computer.

I need answers ASAP because i cant feel SAFE when i think a virus is fiddling around with my computer while i'm surfing the internet.A virus isn't gonna create an icon to let you know it's there...
How do you know it's cool ENOUGH ? ?...where you getting your temp readings from ? ?I'm not fully sure everythings cool in the computer but the icon that appeared was making me suspicious.

I just opened up the computer and looked at EVERYTHING. Only a tad bit of dust was in there which couldn't MAKE anything overheat.

The computer isn't very old either.

Actually i just checked something with malwarebytes and detected something. I am willing to give a screenshot of what it is and if its what was causing the problem.

Solve : Logitech mouse model 525 wireless will not highlight text boxes!?

Answer»

This is my third wireless mouse installed on three different computers (all windows systems). The computer with the issue is a Dell desktop that I have had since purchase in 2011. It had the original DELL mouse until this Saturday when I installed this new mouse. When I TRIED to REGISTER the product I couldn't get the mouse to highlight any of the text boxes.

I then replaced the Dell mouse and had the same problems, but was able to put the pointer over the box, hit select all and then left click and the curser SHOWED the blinking vertical line ready for text. This would take several tries to get it to take. This MORNING, I uninstall the Logitech software driver, restarted and still no joy! I'm beginning to think there is ANOTHER issue Windows 7 is the operating system and it has been acting up over the last couple of months. Any ideas? Thank you.

Solve : Windows Drive way too much big?

Answer»

Hello guys, back after a long time

I have searched on forums as well as on internet for this problem & tried different soultions but with lil to no success

I have 3 drives with C being my system drive its 40 GB & now only 5.2 gb remains free
I tried deleting Windows error reporting files from disk cleanup but it hardly helped

I install everything to E drive which has highest space except the quintessetinal programs that have to be compulsorily installed in system drive (or automatically install in system drive)

This is affecting my butter smooth performance in games as well as photoshop , kindly help Use disc cleanup - "More Options" button - delete old restore points. That should free up a lot of space. If it does, you can reduce the space allotted to system restore or simply disable system restore and use disc imaging software instead. Also delete all temp files and reduce the space allotted to Temporary Internet Files.

If none of the above help, download and run Tree Size and SEE where the space is being used.Quote from: Allan on May 09, 2015, 03:55:12 AM

Seems like these 2 files are culprit, other all things look fine,
Patio what would you suggest as these look system files due to their *.sys formatProblem solved ! with a lil bit help from google

The two files CAN be deleted direcltly as administrator
One is pagefile.sys , a file in which temporary data is stored when ram isnt available

It can be deleted by My computer > properties > Advanced system settings > advanced (tab) > performance (settings button) > advanced > virtual memory > no paging file & press the set button followed by YES to all queries ...restart & windows will delete the pagefile.sys automatically

Hiberfile.sys is related to hibernation

Disable hibernation by running cmd prompt as admin & type Powercfg.exe -h off
Restart & the file will be deleted

Hope this will help future readersQuote from: JoeKkerr on May 10, 2015, 05:13:15 AM
[...]pagefile.sys , a file in which temporary data is stored when ram isnt available

You can delete the page file, sure, but running Windows without one can lead to weird crashes; even with large amounts of RAM a small page file is STILL a good idea. If you absolutely must have such a tiny system disk, you can simply move the page file to the other disk that has more space. There are plenty of places on the web showing how to do this; simply Google for "move Windows xx page file to another drive" where xx is your Windows version.

Don't delete pagefile.sys (it will only be recreated at the next boot), just set the maximum size to a more realistic number (1 or 2 Gb) or set it to "windows managed". As for hiberfil.sys, just disable hibernation.Quote from: SALMON Trout on May 10, 2015, 06:35:42 AM

Thank you sir, didnt knew that ! umm , even after disabling the paging ? will it be created again Yes....Quote from: patio on May 11, 2015, 06:10:30 AM
Yes....
If you go into your virtual memory settings and set the paging file to "none" for all drives then it won't be recreated. As I said before, you can get weird problems with no page file.

When certain applications start, they allocate a huge amount of memory (hundreds of megabytes typically set aside in virtual memory) even though they might not use it. If no page file (i.e., virtual memory) is present, a memory-hogging application can quickly use a large chunk of RAM. Even worse, just a few such programs can bring a machine loaded with memory to a halt. Some applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) will display warnings on startup if no page file is present.

For this reason, people with large amounts of RAM, like 16 GB or more, leave a small page file of 512 MB rather than TURN it off altogether. Best to leave it alone as "system managed" on the disk with most space.

Solve : Updating NVIDIA graphics drivers causes freeze at welcome screen.?

Answer»

Yes, DangerousRaccoon again. Back with more problems, I swear for every problem I fix I create 2 new ones.

After having to replace the motherboard, processor and ram on my pc (tried a replacement MOBO and still no luck) my computer was working fine, albeit slower due to HARDWARE downgrade, until my display driver stopped responding.

The colours went all bright and the SCREEN froze, image was distorted, then crashed. When I booted again the problem remained, colours wrong and screen distorted as soon as the "boot options" page showed up. I reluctantly removed my GTX 480 video card and tried to run on my integrated graphics.

Integrated graphics I have:

NVIDIA GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i chipset

It booted ok but the resolution was far too low. In device manager the display adapter had an error sign. Using Windows to auto-update the driver just caused crashes on boot. So I uninstalled the old display drivers for my GTX 480 and downloaded the most recent driver that supports my integrated graphics from the website (released Jan. 2015).

After installing this, the computer boots fine, and the resolution is correct on the login screen. But after I enter my details the "Welcome" message appears and it freezes. Then the screen goes black for a couple seconds, then comes back on, still frozen, for another few seconds. This flashing repeats, and never PROGRESSES to the desktop.

I'm in safemode at the moment, which boots fine with networking (obviously). I've been at this for hours and it's 4:30am in Australia. Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully after I solve this I won't have to keep posting all these questions! If worst comes to worst I'm prepared to do a clean Windows install, but I'd prefer not to.

Thank you.If it works properly in safemode but won't load in normal mode you have the incorrect vid drivers installed...
They should come from the driver CD that shipped with the MBoard. The MBoard was given to me and kinda old. I don't have the CD. I downloaded the most recent NVIDIA driver that listed the 7 series as compatible. I'll check the motherboard website.

Edit: The GIGABYTE website only has the audio driver for Win7 64bit. But it does have all the VGA drivers etc for Vista 64bit. Should I just install them in compatibility mode for Vista?Ok so I went to the mboard product page and downloaded the drivers, no support for win7 so I had to use the vista drivers. Installed them all in compatibility mode. Same problem occurred as when I let windows install the drivers. Crashed with a black screen either during startup or soon after login. I figured maybe there's nothing wrong with my video card since 3 motherboards with integrated graphics have had problems with the display. Plugged my gtx 480 back in after wiping all other PREVIOUS NVIDIA drivers. Then I installed a much older graphics driver (2011) that still supports this video card.

So far it's working fine but it usually does work fine and then I'll get the "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" messages. Sometimes it'll be fine for 3 weeks, then crash 10 times in a day. I don't do anything different on the days it decides to act up. But this is the first time I've tried an older driver. So finger's crossed. If it starts crashing again, I'm doing a clean install.Quote

And therein lies the issue...Nvidia supplies nForce drivers as well.

Solve : unable to install KB2953664?

Answer»

Hi

I have an Acer Aspire 5336 laptop running WIN 7 Premium

Windows update KB2953664 tries to install everytime the laptop is used on - but fails with this error code 8007371B

I have Googled this problem till I am blue in the face and tried all the 'fixes' that I have come across including the MICROSOFT Fixit tool, installing a standalone installer, going back to an earlier restore point, installing in Safe Mode, nothing will install this update, all other updates install fine, at the moment I have had to turn off windows update,

I suspect there are a lot of corrupt files or registry and this is causing the problem, as there has been malware on the laptop ( I know it's clean as a whistle now) and the kids have turned it off whilst it has been updating, plus they've left the laptop on whilst asleep and the battery has run out.

I do not have a repair disc as Windows was preinstalled

any help much appreciated I can run some scans on that COMPUTER to make sure that it is clean then we can find out why it won't install. Please LET me know and I will move this topic to the malware forum.

Solve : How to install Windows 7 to repaired Desktop?

Answer»

My old DELL Desktop had a bad CPU. Somebody put in the WRONG CPU chip for that motherboard. I had installed WINDOWS 7 Pro before I found the mistake. I replaced the CPU.

Now I have erased the hard drive and tried to install Windows 7 again. Well, the install was OK. But I can not VERIFY the COA that goes with this Windows 7. It worked before, several months ago, but now I can not use it.

My guess is the CPU replacement changed some kind of ID thing.
Is thee a way to ask Microsoft to reverse identify a CPU?

Yes.

Solve : 2 copies of Windows 7 on one PC?

Answer»

Maybe in a week or so there will be some way to clarify this question.
As has been mentioned, even on the MICROSOFT forums they talk about multi boot. Never is there found a warning that you violate the license.
The EULA does prohibit visualization, which lets two on more users run one computer with one license. Multi users ate the same time are not allowed.

But multi boot is wrong, we shooed see proof when the RTM comes out.

Actually, the RTM is out, 10240 released on 7/16.

I downloaded it to one computer, then used the ESD file to create the ISO file & then a bootable flash drive to install it on the others.Computer_Commando, Thanks. That is news.

Not that I am suggesting anyone do this , but what would actually happen in a pc if you tried to install two copies of windows under one license, ie technically illegally?

I was wondering how anyone would know if you has broken the licence terms an if so what would happen on the computer.

Don't worry I am not going to try it, I am just curious!Well, I have tried it a number of times. Microsoft will allow 30 for you to validate your license, which gives you lots of time to experiment.
In what region do you live? Reportedly MS has crashed some users on other parts of the world where legal recourse is weak.

UK. Not going to try it. Don't want to rock the boat. Have dismissed dual boot idea. Will try 10 on my Backup laptop and try it out before putting it on my main machine.

One more thing. I mentioned running live CD downloads of Linux OS s from dvd-r to try them out. Can I do this with either of the windows OS s so that I can still use it without installing a second d os on the HDD? Quote from: richardf77 on July 29, 2015, 01:15:51 PM

Live CD boots from the CD & installs nothing unless you tell it to.Don't' give up.

You probably shouldn’t install Windows 10 on your primary PC. But, if you are going to, you should at least install it in a dual-boot configuration. You can then reboot to switch between your installed versions of Windows.
Be sure you have backups of your important files before doing this. You shouldn’t lose your files if you follow this process, but a mistake or bug could cause you to lose them. Better safe than sorry!

One can find a ton of articles that don't consider that what they advise may violate EULAs.

Realistically, I'd personally not care if somebody was using a pirated copy even. It's more a case of liability for the site (and arguably, myself) since offering advice/information that would help people violate the EULA can be problematic. Arguably a lot of stuff can be used maliciously or for those sorts of purposes so it's something of a gray area, but that's a whole different bag of gophers.Yesterday I put two installs of Windows 7 home. Actually, not two copies. In installed one copy, And then installed another copy. I have two licenses and two different versions of Windows 7 home.

Windows did a multi boot install fro the second one. The boot menu
says:
windows 7
windows 7

Later I validated the second install. After that, I did Windows 10 as an upgrade to Windows 7. The installer found the right one and installed Windows 10. I now have both Windows 7 and the new Windows 10 on the boot menu.

But I have not yet tried to instill Windows 7 from just one CD and one COA and try multi boot. If multi-boot does harm to Microsoft, why have they not said something more explicit? And how would it harm them?

Multiple booting scenarios are fine but if you have one copy/license of Windows 7, and want to try Windows 10, you won't be able (under the EULA) to have a dual boot between Windows 10 and Windows 7, for the same reason you cannot upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 and then install that copy of Windows 7 somewhere else. If you have multiple licenses for WIN7 it's fine.

And again this about what you are able to do while being above-board with regards to the EULA. Whether it is possible despite that is another question.We can agree. A user with one COA {license} for Windows 7 gets a free upgrade to Windows 10 and nothing more. The original Windows 7 DVD can not be used again. {Exception is maybe a huge system crash.}

Some sites are saying you can have both you Windows 7 and a version of Windows 10. But I believe this means a limited version for a limited time for evaluation by an enterprise. That is not the same as the full Windows 10.

I plan to see if I can get an evaluation version for some testing. I will use ether another DESKTOP or a fresh formatted hard drive.

BTW: The updates for an early version of Windows 7 are about 180 things and it takes hours.

Solve : Windows 7 C: Drive Compression Question?

Answer»

Friend of mine hit me up with a question about freeing up his C: drive space by enabling compression of his C: drive using checkbox under the general tab on Windows 7.

I told him that he would take a performance hit if he used this, and he asked how bad it would be, and I said that you would have to check the BOX and let it compress and see if you could live with it, but I will check first on this forum before he gives it a TRY.

Question I have is before he goes ahead and tries this out are there any drawbacks other than a performance hit in which the system has to constantly compress and decompress data? Is this feature not as bad as it was years ago because modern hardware is much QUICKER? Does the system also compress swap space or is that left alone as for that seems like it should be left alone from any compression to be as raw as possible to pass back to system RAM, although maybe page/swap info is as compressed as it could be anyways as for its just binary read/writes?

I haven't messed with C: drive compression in YEARS. I used it a long time ago on Windows 95 with Microsoft Plus! for Win 95 when I had a 486 DX 33Mhz 16MB RAM with a small 320MB Connor IDE HDD and 2x Sony CD-ROM and it worked to allow me to fit more stuff on a system with limited space, but there was a noticeable performance hit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DriveSpaceThe compression feature is part of the NTFS file system.

Herei s a SuperUser article/post on NTFS compression performance considerations. Thanks for the link... shared it with him. Looks like he is going to try it out and see if he can live with any performance hit.

Solve : How to put Windows 7 on a new hard drive, and it be genuine??

Answer»

So my computer currently has a 600GB hdd with Windows 7 on it. I just bought a new 240GB SSD that is now on it's way. My question is what is the best way to get genuine Windows 7 back on there? Yes, I know a lot of people would say get a cracked copy from the internet, but I honestly don't want to do that.

The copy of Windows 7 on my computer now is just the one the manufacturer preinstalled years ago. It's honestly not the cleanest well-functioning system anymore and I would greatly PREFER reinstalling the OS from scratch, if that's an option. I don't know if reinstalling it and just putting this key in would work or if it would then be genuine.

What is my best bet? I actually don't know how this all works with Windows, I've never had this type of situation before.Do you have the Win 7 install disk? If so, you should be able to use it to do a clean install of Win 7 to the ssd and use the key to activate it. Changing out the boot drive is OK, it's when you do something like change out the MOTHERBOARD that you will have problems reusing the key. What is make/model of the computer and have you created the system recovery media set yet which most off the shelf computers come with? If you havent created this yet you should get like two 8GB Flash Drives ready or ABILITY to burn about 4 DVD-R's with the recovery media. In your system usually under the manufacturer name in Program Files etc such as Toshiba, Dell, eMachine, HP, etc you should find a tools, utilities, or other option to create the system restore or recovery media. Some systems its a 1 time shot where you can only create the set 1 time and then your in trouble if you created it but lost the media that was created. Some warn you not to make extras of them but they allow you to do so such as my Toshiba Netbook that I lost 1 of 2 USB sticks with the recovery media, it allowed me to create a new set and just warned me that your only SUPPOSE to do this once even though it was my 2nd time running that media creation utility and the media worked to perform the 160GB 5400RPM HDD to 120GB SSD upgrade.Quote from: strollin on May 20, 2015, 08:00:12 AM

No, I don't have the Win 7 install disk. So if I was to get a Windows 7 Home Premium disk I could do a fresh install from that, put my key in and then be able to activate it resulting in Genuine Windows?

It's a Toshiba L655D laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. I don't have the recovery IMAGE from when the system was purchased (because I bought this PC from a friend) and I'm not sure how much point there is in doing it now since the system is messed up. I have a recovery partition, but I don't know if it's actually possible to reinstall Windows from that.Toshiba will sell you the factory restore CD;s which will take it back to Day 1 condition for a minimal price + shipping...

Solve : Recovery of cleaned HDD on laptop?

Answer»

Hello,
I have a "LITTLE" issue with my PC (laptop). How can I start...

I had dual-boot on my PC, Windows 7 and Kali Linux (for testing security).
I have one HDD and Linux was on one small (about 28GB) partition, which I have cutted from OS partition.
So after long time not using Kali Linux I decided to format/clean that partition. It did not work with diskpart.exe (cant remember what was the problem).

Next I rebooted PC and changed BOOT option in BIOS to boot GRUB as first to get to Kali Linux. Kali Linux didnt work (it hasnt started just opened some terminal on FULL screen).
I tried to start Windows using grub, didnt work.
I change BIOS option how it was, and Windows didnt start (0xc000000f error). F8 recovery worked, but I closed it, because I have som bad experience with it (accidentaly formated C: about year ago).
When I have no idea what to do next, I tried to start it again, but after pressing F8 nothing happened. I tried Installation CD, repair CD (which I made with some files from C->Recovery and C->Windows>Boot), repair CD made by another PC (laptop withoud CD-ROM) with Windows 7 64x, but every time it said, that Its incompatible with my version of Windows.
I forgot to say, taht I deleted that grub option from BIOS (dont ask why, I did it).

I find a lot of things that should help.
At last I tried [emailprotected] Boot Disk (version 4.0.1) and in console I accidentaly cleaned (no parametres) my HDD with diskpart.exe.
[emailprotected] Boot Disk has Partition Recovery so I scaned for partitions and (partitions with good status) I saved partitions (with the best status of each INSTEAD that partition with Linux) as image (DIM) on my external HDD.
I didnt write ANYTHING on my PCs HDD so files arent overwritten (shouldnt be).

[emailprotected] File Recovery have som function called RAID (maybe it can help, but I didnt understand very well what it will do and there is still problem with already taken drive letters (C,D,...)).

My QUESTION is: How to safely recover that partitions with their original letters (C,D,...) and settings?
(Active Boot Disk cant recover partitions, it says that hard drive is incopatible or something like that.)
(My USB key (BOOT) has taken letter C and DVD drive has taken D).

I can imagine a bootable USB with tool, that can recover all partitions (and files) on hard drive to their original status.

Sorry for my English and how this thread looks like, but I dont have much time now. Thx for reply!

Solve : Endless BSOD?

Hey everyone, So quite recently my computer decided to go on the fritz and start Blue screen of deathing me. Initial research lead me to believe it was driver related so i went through and updated everything i could possibly find and the issue persisted so i decided to start fresh so i wiped everything and reinstalled windows. Cleared partition and installed brand new. Less than a day later this issues continued and have been worse than ever. I'm currently running windows home premium 64-bit, 12GB of RAM AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.80GHZ processor. I built it like 5 years ago and has always done me good. I've done as much troubleshooting than i can figure out, updating drivers, Diagnostics on Hard-drive, ran every test windows could offer but everything continues. Some things POINT to my RAM but having issues isolating that down, other than that im not sure how to proceed.

Any help would be appreciated. URL below is a screen shot of my Blue Screen viewer of all my minidumps. HIGHLIGHTED the ones that i think are important as all the ones at the top i caused my self when i was attempting to disable windows Verifier and did it wrong.

You get BSOD.
You have windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
Your CPU is an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.80GHZ .
You have 12 GB of RAM.
You built it FIVE years ago.
You did Hard Drive tests.
You formatted and installed again.
True?
And the issue persisted?

Here are some things to do.:
Remove as much RAM as you can.
Let it run for awhile doing what you normally do.
One or more of your RAM sticks may have gone bad or have beco9me heat sensitive.

What memory tests have you tried?
This one? It can also test 64 bit.
http://www.memtest86.com/
You may have to run it awhile to find errors. Like hours.
I ran the manufactures hard-drive diagnostic i found from their website, and i did try to run the Memtest but the computer version not the cd or usb boot versions. any time ive try to run it when i come back my computer has BSOD'd and im on my windows log in screen so i havent been able to see if it came back with any errors. I'm going to get myself some blank CDs and try that. But grasping at any other things i might be able to learn to try.Memtest86 is a rather robust program.
If it gives you BSOD, you have a real issue.

Like I said, try one stick of RAM. Then another. One is bad.Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in NOTEPAD, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyThere was a screen shot of my Blue screen viewer in my original post but here it is. I saved the 7 of them i got within 4 hours when things were the worst.

You have multiple and varied bsod's. This is typically caused by either malware or a significant hardware failure. Have you run full scans with BOTH your installed antivirus app AND MalwareBytes? If so, and if there is no malware present, it could be anything from the motherboard to the cpu or something a simple as ram. Here's the correct way to check the ram:

download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

If the ram passes my suggestion would be to try a new mobo (be sure to get it from a source that will accept a return in the event that it is not the problem).

Solve : Please help - game misbehaving?

Answer»

Hmm, HELLO, I don t know where else to ask this so I ll just ask here
I've this problem on a game called "Thief"
The problem is that when I get close to some light or a light-source, the light on that spot disappears. It doesn't actually disappear, because enemy s can detect me while I am in that spot, must mean it only disappears for me.
Here, this is a picture of how it should be and while I m not close to the light or on it

This is how it looks LIKE, when I m there, where the light should be

This is how my shadow looks like (it should be the opposite, dark shadow, surrounding the light of the fire)

and this is how it looks like, when there is someone next to the light (there is a dead body near the fire (if you look closely))

I've checked other people playing and they don t seem the have that problem, I've searched on google if anyone has a similar problem and they don t.
So, what can I do?
If you require any information to help you just tell meSee Here...It most definitely improved my game performance, but it didn't fix this light problemWhat are you running for Operating System and Video Card and Video Driver version?

I have had similar PROBLEMS in game and a driver update cured it, as WELL as I have seen this happen with other games running games meant for Windows operation through Linux and Wine.Quote from: skipperskips on May 24, 2015, 10:21:37 PM

Solve : Movie Maker issues?

Answer»

Howdy! I have a huge problem I was wondering if you all could help me.

I have been USING Movie Maker for some TIME now and while it has GIVEN me a fit here and there, generally it is fine. Well, recently, it has been really giving me fits. I do videos on YouTube and I usually record in 60fps. When I had started, MM was fine with it (I had actually set Fraps to record in 120fps for best results, as suggested by a friend, but the videos were published at 60fps). But now, if I load ANY 60fps footage into it, it severely hiccups during playback and EVENTUALLY crashes. This makes editing a chore. I have tried everything, but to no avail. I have uninstalled/reinstalled, updated, everything. Now, it will only accept 30fps footage with no issues, but I fear that it might end up giving me fits again. I would love any help to get this fixed.

I know that I should get a better editing program, but that is not an option right now has my budget is VERY TIGHT, so for the time being, I would just like to get MM fixed and worked at full.

Solve : IE 11 and Radarbox24.com?

I'm having a problem using Internet Explorer 11 and the flight tracking site radarbox24.com on one of my PC's, using Windows 7. When I try to use COCKPIT View, I get a message "ERROR Constructing CesiumWidget". My other PC's work fine with this site. I've ATTACHED a screenshot. Any ideas?

Cesium runs fine on IE 11, but it is a LITTLE more finicky when it comes to video card/drivers support. Visit the vendor website and upgrade them to the LATEST official version and that will hopefully do the trick for you.

You need latest video card drivers maybe...

Solve : windows 7, harddrive partition issues?

Answer»

first off i apologize if this is in the wrong place or if i missed a forum already on this, i didnt see anything on partitions.

now to the matter at hand. i know how to partition my hard drive generally with windows 7, which is what i am using, but i have recently PUT a new motherboard and processor in my computer. this has made me have to re-install windows 7. it seems that all of my old partitions are now gone. i didn't think much of this i just went ahead and looked into reallocating them. but when i try to re-partition them it will not let me do this. the option to create a partition for these unallocated slots is not appearing. if there is any advice you could give me it will be much appreciated,in the mean time i will be looking into it myself

thank you in advanceReinstalling the OS does not effect existing partitions unless you intentionally deleted the partitions during the installation process. You need to EXPLAIN the situation in more detail please.Quote from: rollertycoon on MAY 30, 2015, 02:47:05 AM

Can' make much sense of this; it really needs some clarification. You say your old partitions are gone but then you seem to say you went ahead and tried to work with them; your comments seem contradictory. IE...i screwed the pooch on my new install...what now ? ?

Seperate partitions only get wonked by User error...

You should be able to replace that CD Rom with a newer DVD ROM DRIVE for around $20 assuming you have a SATA port AVAILABLE. If you need a IDE TYPE ribbon CABLE type drive then you would probably be looking at buying a used one on amazon or ebay or maybe someone you know has a old computer they no longer need that you can part out and grab and use their CD or DVD ROM from with correct jumper config for CS, MA, or SL
