Solve : Computer swithching on but not starting...?

Answer»

HI,

SO I m not sure how to start...

I have a HP pavillion dv7 (Windows 7) and I very STUPIDLY downloaded a program on it the day before yesterday (to root my phone), about 5/6 hours after intsalling this program my PC froze, I forced switched it off and when I turned it back on all *censored* broke lose.
Basically the black screen of recovery appears and no matter which option I take ( start the computer normally or use the recovery tool ) it just ends up starting all over again or freezing on a weird screen with a window that looks like the cmd window.....
If I try F8 any option I take just ends up one of 2 ways: a black screen starts loading a bunch of files and FREEZES at some POINT OR the weird screen with cmd window appears...
I am sorry if I am not being very clear but my computer is in English and I don't know the axact translations for all the TERMS...

I know I could go in a French forum but I it's so much harder and LONGER to express myself... -__-'

Hope one of you will help...I feel pretty hopeless right now
Do you know the name of the program? Don't worry about the language. I'm bilingual (English and vulgar) but I can manage french. It could be just a co-incidence that something failed on your computer shortly after you download the program. It's unusual for malware to cause this sort of thing. Can you boot in Safe Mode?

Solve : Unable to run System Restore?

Answer»

Hi there, I have a Windows 7 HP laptop and am having issues logging in. I think some files MAY be corrupt because whenever I try to login it displays the 'User profile failed the logon' message.

Ive seen on GOOGLE that a system restore is the best option, Ive tried to do this by going into Safe Mode, but there is no 'System Protection' tab, so it will not allow me to create a restore point.

Ive also tried a Startup Repair but it didnt fix the issue.

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Thanks so much. Did you try the F11 button on startup which causes it to go into system recovery mode?I recommend:

Going My Computer -> Right-Click Drive -> PROPERTIES -> Tools Tab -> Error-Check then restart your computer in order for it to start READING for any errors and fixing them.Quote from: Hakezu on July 19, 2015, 08:13:41 AM

I recommend:

Going My Computer -> Right-Click Drive -> Properties -> Tools Tab -> Error-Check then restart your computer in order for it to start reading for any errors and fixing them.

That would do nothing to help the problem at hand.If you cant get system recovery to run, then you will need to contact the computer manufacturer and acquire a system recovery set. If its under warranty they might give you a free shipment of a USB drive or Discs to be able to perform a clean factory installation. If its out of the warranty they can charge around $35 for this media.

HP has been pretty good for supplying system recovery media in the past for some people I know.

Solve : Corrupt dsound.dll and Administrative Permissions issue?

Answer»

Hey everyone!

As much as I hate to, I am going to have to give you a brief story simply because I am not entirely sure what my issue is:

In an attempt to play Dying Light, I realized I had a corrupt dll. When I run Dying Light I am immediately confronted with "Bad Image:"

Code: [Select]C:\...\DSOUND.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an ERROR. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Followed with "DyingLight.exe has stopped working"

So my first attempt to fix the issue was to use Dying Light's DXSetup. When I ran the installer I was confronted with another error message:
Code: [Select]An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine the problem.
DirectX.log READ as follows:

Everything seems fine.

DXError.log did not contain an entry. The last recorded entry was from 3 years ago.

So unless I am missing something, the DXSetup failed without leaving any clue to what the issue is.

Seeing as this failed, I tried another method. I manually downloaded the dsound.dll and attempted a file overwrite. I know I am going to get chewed out because this is dangerous, but on the bright side, this method failed so there's nothing to worry about

I am the administrator for my computer, yet no matter what I try I cannot seem to overwrite my system32 files.
I have tried running Explorer as an admin, I have transferred ownership of the file to my admin account (by using CMD takeown /f). I have used a administrative command prompt to attempt move commands and the: Code: [Select]cacls C:\Windows\System32\dsound.dll /G "my owner account":F -- command
Nothing is giving me overwrite permissions.

I have tried updating my drivers but they are already up to date.

So I'm stuck with two issues. My DXSetup fails with no reason and I cannot get Windows Vista admin privileges to fix the issue myself.

The DXSetup issue is software related but the administrative permissions is windows related so I wasn't quite sure where to post this, sorry!

Here is some system information that may help:
Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
64-bit OPERATING System
AMD Radeon HD 6600 Series (Which should be capable of running the DirectX needed.)
The DirectX version that DylingLight is trying to install is the "June 2010" package.
Steam did not report any issues with the installation and I have tried reinstalling. Moreover, I have had previous sound issues with 7Days2Die so I don't believe the issue is solely with Dying Light.

Any help is appreciated. I do not know a lot about .dll's so if I left out information please tell me and I will respond within 24 hours.

Thank you!

The scan finished and said it COULD not fix some errors.
I am still having the same issue so nothing was visibly fixed.
The CBS log is... extensive. Even if I single out the text from when I ran the scan, there is still far too much information to share. It has worked great over the years. Last year I had decided to install Ubuntu 14 (just to try things out). Long story SHORT I was dissatisfied and switched back to Windows 7. However I am experiencing a RECURRING issue. When running some applications the computer will just shut down, when the power LIGHT turns back on, i hear 3 beeps instead of the normal single beep indicating a start up. I have to push the power button and let sit for a few hours before system restarts.

I WOULD greatly appreciate some help or clarification

ps. the most recent shut down occurred when playing (world of Warcraft). If any more information is needed I will gladly provide.

Thank you. From Our ARCHIVES...

Solve : SD Card Reader?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a 64 bit Packard Bell all-in-one running WINDOWS 7. It has a built in card reader. My cell phone popped up the "damaged sd card" message. So I tried to format it on the pc. During the formatting process my pc froze. I rebooted then tried again but when I inserted the card nothing happens now. Do I need to uninstall Realtek PCIE Card Reader then download it and install it again. In Disc Management the card Reader drive is not shown. Any help WOULD be appreciated. Have you tried a different card in the PC? It's possible that the card itself has failed.Hi there

Yes. No CARDS work at all.Where are you gettin the reader drivers from ? ?
I'm not sure if it is a driver problem YET. The card reader did work up to putting the damaged card in.

Solve : need windows 7 help please?!?

Answer»

I'm going to try to make this sound as less complicated as POSSIBLE. I have a hp all-in-one pc that originally came with win 7 PRO oa (according to my coa sticker LOCATED on the bottom of the computer). I am currently using win 7 home, and it is giving me some problems such as not loading my integrated webcam and keyboard drivers. When I go to device manager, I can see the drivers, but the software is NOWHERE to be found on my computer. I am also getting "windows 7 not genuine errors" and a black screen b/c my product key is not valid with win 7 home. I guess my question is, is there any place I can get a valid and real copy of win 7 pro oa (x16-96076) for free and redo my computer using my product key that I already have?No free locations to get it. Only option I can think of is that if the Windows 7 Pro key is real, you can use someone elses Windows 7 Pro installation disc and then use your key vs theirs to INSTALL clean with a genuine key.

It sounds like you bought this system used and inherited problems with the purchase. Its very strange that a system with a genuine 7 pro key would have been installed with a non genuine Windows 7 Home Premium. So I question if the Pro key is any good. This link is from Microsoft
How to Tell if product key is real.

Let me guess.
The owner crashed the system and used a Windows 7 Home to fix it.
And he did not fell you.

You will have to find the drivers on the web site of the maker of the computer.
Sad to say, most PC makers no longer include the Windows install DVD.

Hi Geek,
Before re installation of windows 7 i used to get the message after shut down and that was from disply driver and used to say navida disply driver stoped working.
before re installtion of windows i had the time and date issue used to be wrong most of the time but in the last 2 days as i re installed windows time and date is okey.

loss of time and date can mean the CMOS cell is failing and you lose the BIOS settings. Or a strange hardware failure.

Are you using a separate video card or the built-in (on board) video device?

Bad drives can do unexpected things. You can try and get the best driver from the maker of the video card. For the ob-board video , it is on the Gigabyte CD.

Do not trust Windows to always have the beast driver.

thanks for the reply,
all the drivers i install from CD,
and yeah i am using navida Ge force graphic card.
could you please advise how to fix it from where should i start fixing???

thanks in advance. At this point, I think the best thing is make sure you have the drivers from Nvidia
http://www.nvidia.com/page/support.html
You will have to provide the model number. Be sure to specify your Operation system. Drivers for Vista may not WORK on Windows 7.
Nvidia drivers might be found elsewhere, but those other places hey tack on other junk you do not want.
Hope that solves the problem.

Solve : Computer running very slow?

Answer»

Hi,
I have an acer aspire one , AMD chip, 1gb ram running win7 sp1. Over the last week has slowed down. Malware bites finds no malware. Ms security is happy. The only new thing on this computer is the little icon in the toolbar about windows 10. Task manager shows 100 % CPU usage. under processes there is MsMpE.exe (anti malware service executable) using 48000. I tried to end this process but access is denied. Can any one tell me what this is? If I go to Msconfig and disable all services and reboot CPU usage is zero. If I hide Microsoft services and disable all others and reboot CPU usage is 100% so this SEEMS to be a Microsoft service.
Any help appreciated.
Regards
GeofflYou can try setting back to a restore point in the past and see if the problem goes away. The processor in that computer is weak in processing power and so if there was a virus scan or updates happening BEHIND the scenes it would probably bring most of the functionality of the computer to a grinding halt. I had a client with Windows 7 starter on one of these and it was a very slow process even after CLEAN installation to install software and all updates.

Quote

AMD chip, 1gb ram running win7 sp1

The RAM being 1GB is bare suggested minimum for 7, where I have seen 7 -32 bit run on less and run even slower and so this is one area of the performance problem in addition to a weak processor. Additionally they paired this system with a slow laptop hard drive and with only 1GB RAM there is lots of paging going on I the swap for virtual memory where the hard drive acts as additional temp memory storage. So you might notice that your hard drive light is frequently on solid or blinking. Doubling the memory to 2GB would help some, but over all the system is a weak low cost system with lightweight processing power.Thank you for your help.
I kept stopping things and found out it is the print spooler. Now that has stopped CPU is 1 - 20%. Any Idea why this would happen all of a sudden?
Also do you think I should upgrade this computer to WIN 10?
Regards
GeofflI have seen some HP print drivers eat up all the CPU due to FAILED printing. Usually installing latest printer driver fixed this. HP also has services bundled into their drivers that are not required for the printer to work that have a tendency to act up, so installing a driver that is just the driver and not a bundled driver with all extra features can also fix this. Some other printer brands also have an option for a smaller in size basic driver and a larger in size driver that is feature rich, in which the extra features may not be necessary.

Windows 10 is a one way upgrade. If you don't like it your stuck with it unless you spend money to go back to 7. Unless there is something that Windows 10 offers that Windows 7 doesn't offer, I'd stick with 7. Additionally this systems processing power is on the weak side and only 1GB of RAM would be best to be upgraded to 2GB of RAM before an upgrade to 10. Windows 10 would work on 1GB RAM though. I have tested it on OLDER Pentium 4 systems with 1GB RAM for the 32 bit version.Thank you so much for your helpYour welcome. Did the printer driver update/replacement cure this?Is the MsMpENG.exe still using a lot of C PU?
Take some time off Geek...I am away till next Sunday and will go looking for the driver then. I only use this little thing when away (easy to carry).
CPU usage is now fine.
Thanks Again

Solve : Asus preload wizard loop (Virus?Bug?)?

Answer»

Hello guys!

Last NIGHT I closed my laptop to sleep as usual, and today I woke up to a asus preload wizard screen, which of course I canceled, because I didn't wanna loose my data. (Last backup is 3 month, and I have the most important stuff but still).

I've had that once before, and when I just runned windows normaly it went away. This time it didn't work.
Things I TRIED :

- Safe mode
- Start with the last know good configuration in BIOS

None of them works and always RESEND me to asus reload, which when canceled sens me to a choice of either windos repair startup which I don't wanna run, or normal windows which SENDS me to asus load again.

How can I save my data and get rid of this problem?

Thank you very much !

Solve : Odd DVD Rom issue that appears to be Windows 7 related?

Answer»

Was wondering if anyone has ever had a DVD-ROM that spins full speed with Windows OS when the disc in the drive is not really being used?

Symptoms & What has been tried:

Computer boots and the boot order is set to check for bootable Disc before booting off HDD. It pauses for 1 or 2 seconds to see if the disc is bootable and moves on. Windows boots from HDD and the disc is still spinning full speed in the drive. For the full duration that the computer is used the drive is spinning the disc full speed even though its not being used by any applications.

The disc is a DVD-R which contains some old data to it in reference to a recent project that has me tapping into old info. I tried other discs and get the same result so its not the disc itself that is the trigger for this odd behavior.

The hard drive in this system is dual boot with Windows 7 64-bit home premium and Linux Mint 17.1.

When booting to Linux Mint 17.1, the DVD-ROM goes from the full speed to rest state of no spinning.

So, Windows 7 appears to be KEEPING the drive mounted and active spin when Linux does not, and so I don't believe this to be a hardware issue, but instead something in Windows 7 that is configured to keep the DVD-ROM active. Just not sure what is doing this...

Additionally I thought that maybe the drive itself is odd and so if I swap out this DVD-ROM with another DVD-ROM maybe the odd issue would clear up, so I swapped out the LG drive with a DVD Lite-On drive that I had, and the other drive also experiences the same oddity.

My thoughts were that maybe Windows 7 is trying to maintain an index of the drive and so its keeping it active even though nothing appears to be reading the disc because there is no blinking or solid lit LED activity. The LED remains out and not lit when spinning full speed at idle.

Last check was to take the same discs tested in this system with the oddity to a laptop also running Windows 7 64-bit and see if the OPTICAL drive spins non stop with the discs in that system. The laptop was at rest with no spinning of the disc when disc inserted and not in use by any applications.

Right now the only solution has been to remove the disc from the drive when not NEEDED to be in the drive, but its an annoyance that I cant just leave the disc in there for when I need it because I don't WANT the optical drive to burn out prematurely from excess motor use to drive motor for the disc spin. And sometimes when removing the disc that is important, I would accidentally misplace it and then have to scramble to try to locate it, whereas if it just remained in the drive it would be there vs elsewhere. I have been trying to force myself to a habit of placing the disc into a jewel case in 1 specific location of my desk so that I am not having to scramble for that disc when working on projects with its reference material. Sure I suppose I could copy the data from that disc to the HDD and put the disc back into safe keep, but this drive spin annoyance I figured I would try to correct if it can be corrected vs writing 4.7GB of data to HDD and then removing that 4.7GB reference material after the project is done etc making extra steps for myself.

Any suggestions on what to check and how to correct this greatly appreciated. Maybe there are others out there that just leave the optical drive to spin full speed and don't care about it since the system works without problems otherwise and with the disc already spun up, the disc data is that much quicker to be read by the system with system not having to wait for disc to come up to speed to be read.

Solve : Dell Inspiron 531 trouble booting up?

Answer»

My windows vista machine is having trouble booting up. During the bootup process the screen shows Dell , bios 1. something and F2 for setup or F12 for boot menu. The machine will allow me to choose either F2 or F12, but of course I don't know what to do from that point. If I don't choose f2 or f12 the computer will continue to boot up and start running Windows Vista but the screen shows basically black and white dashed lines over a green and blue back ground. It's as if the basic DOS part is working but the Window overlay, at least the video presentation part is corrupted. So, my question is, is this problem just a Windows Vista software problem? Maybe just SIMPLY reload the operating system type of thing? More likely the Hard Drive is starting to fail. If it is slow to spin up up, the boot can fail. AS for Vista, you should be able to make a repair to the OS itself without the need for a fresh install.

Here is good tutorial on Vista repair.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/
Read it over fully before you try it. Done correctly, it should help, not hurt. The site the like above has a good reputation for giving correct advice.

Please not the above e is only for repair to the OS. It does not really fix a weakness of the hard drive itself.
In a stark bit of coincidence, I have only just gotten a Dell Inspiron 531S system to fix up.

In an even bigger coincidence, I'm seeing nearly the exact same issue.

First I found the HDD had failed, which prevented it from trying to boot at all. So I swapped in a different drive and WENT to install Linux Mint. It is very unstable however and very SHORTLY after getting to the GUI it will show a bunch of dashes going down the screen and the system is unresponsive.

So far my suspect is the graphics adapter, since it is built into the motherboard and uses the System RAM, I have been performing a Memory test. It has not shown any problems so far but has yet to COMPLETE a full pass.

I'll try to remember to update this thread if I make any progress, however my prognosis so far hasn't been very good.

For your case I would suggest running a Memory Test. you can use memtest86 for this- you'll need another system that can burn a CD-R disc, but from there you should be able to boot your Inspiron to the disc and run the test. general rule of thumb is to allow it to run overnight. If it shows any errors than the Memory is bad, and you may want to have somebody take a look at the system to determine which memory modules need replacing or to further diagnose the problem. I'm sure myself and others would be happy to help via the forum, but of course I understand that such things are often a colossal bother for those not interested in the field. An update on the system I am dealing with.

The memory test was clean. I was able to get it to start installing KUbuntu; though the graphics were incredibly glitchy. It was late so I ended up going to sleep figuring I'd deal with the installed system in the morning. In the morning, however- the system was off, and it no longer turns on.

Turns out the Power Supply failed. I was able to get it to power on with a backup power supply (which is of course not small enough to fit in the case itself, because the system uses a TFX form factor)

My suspicion is that this was also causing the Graphics issues. My "solution" is to replace the Power supply. I'm replacing it with a new TFX form-factor supply and I'll see if that resolves the issues I was seeing on the system- if they persist I will replace the graphics card, but I think the PSU was failing and that was causing the issues on the system.

Anyway, getting back to the Original Posters Inspiron 531s, given the similarities, I'm apt to also suspect the power supply, especially given that, looking online, it seems that the 531s power supplies have a lot of issues with failure.

I don't mean to monopolize the thread with Inspiron 531s issues, but since I'm doing some research and testing with the exact same system that is having almost the same symptoms it can be useful information for deciding how to proceed with the system to get it working again.THANKS for the info. from my trouble shooting description, you can tell I'm not too savvy when it comes to working on computers. But i'll share yours ideas with our local computer repair shop guys. thanks

Solve : Turning your computer off when not in use & @ night...?

Answer»

Who here turns their computer off when not in use?

I've read from multiple articles and many videos ( linus being the most credible ) recommending and saying its ok to turn your computer off when not in use.
Reduces heat and potential wear and tear. The other thought is though everytime you turn your computer on your wearing on the parts as well.

Personally I turn mine off everytime I walk away. It literaly take 4 sec. to shutdown and 6 sec. to turn on.I usually turn off at night. During the day, I usually let it, or them, go into sleep mode after some inactivity. My laptop will automatically switch from Sleep to Hibernation (which is a fully powered down state) after being in Sleep mode for a certain length of time. There is no right or wrong. Do whatever makes you happy.I turn off all my computers when not in use. Some I have set to place into sleep mode when left for a period of time inactive such as my wifes computer.

The BIGGEST savings in shutting down is lowering your electric bill by a small amount if a regular computer, or greater amount if a extreme gaming rig with multiple video cards and 8-core AMD CPU etc.

There are pros and cons to cycling a system powered on and resting powered off.

Pros of powering off when not in use:

1.) Computer takes longer to accumulate dust and animal hair inside because cooling fans are not drawing in air. ( * Generally lasts longer )
2.) Lower electric bill
3.) Home computers do better when they are at least rebooted (warm boot ) to reset the memory and boot fresh since 99.9% of home computers are using Non-ECC ( error checking memory ).
4.) Hard Drives are not spinning when idle wearing on the mechanical hardware that make up HDD's.
5.) Motherboards with electrolytic capacitors take longer to dry up electrolyte because the capacitors are only heated when in use to vent out electrolyte vapor.
6.) Cooling fans last longer because less wear on the fans over a period of time.

Cons to powering off computer:

1.) Upon every power up there is a sudden draw for heavy current consumption that if you had lower quality components could eventually stress components that take a current draw spike on every boot such as VRM's, Power Supply, and other power related / conversion/ or filtration components.

2.) Heat cycles CAUSE EXPANSION and contraction that could fatigue parts over time. * Very unlikely to occur with quality parts, more likely with systems that have inadequate cooling and run too hot and then cool and run too hot again without emergency thermal shutdowns in which the components are thermally stressed.

3.) You have to wait for it to boot up before use. If you have a newer system with a SSD its not that bad, but if an older Pentium 4 or Celeron computer running Windows 7 on 1GB RAM, and a slow and older 40GB 5400 rpm IDE Hard Drive, it could be 2 or 3 minutes before your at the desktop to be able to use it, such as Windows 7 32-bit tested on a 2002 year eMachine with a socket 478 Pentium 4 2000Mhz with 1GB 266Mhz FSB RAM on a 60GB Samsung IDE HDD and integrated Intel 845GL graphics on 64MB shared memory took about 3 minutes to get to desktop after clean build with CPU and HDD running full bore
to boot for all but 8 seconds of the initial POST time delay.

Also to note when a computer is powered off, the soft power, which allows computers to be powered off of the front power button can cause a system to draw around 7 watts, if you add the flat screen monitor to it idle you will see about 12 watts as for its in its low power mode with backlight off waiting for a signal.

If your looking to save electricity its best to power off a power strip or battery backup that powers the computer.
The argument of leaving it on somehow making it last longer is nonsense IMO - Even if it did affect the lifespan, the machine will long outlast its useful life before any wear that that somehow causes would cause problems.

I'll leave my machine on or put it to sleep if I am currently working on it (for example I'll leave it on if I need to quickly run to the shop or something) because shutting it down means I need to reopen all my applications and get back working again when I get back to it. However, I won't leave it on 24/7 or anything, all that does is waste power and therefore increase my electric bill!

As Allan says, do whatever works best for you.Where's the off switch again ? ?Quote from: patio on May 30, 2015, 05:13:58 PM

Where's the off switch again ? ?
Start. lolDo you have a PC or a laptop? I have a laptop and I always put him in a hibernation, not turn off. In my humble opinion, if you leave your computer for a few minutes, or even hours, it is best to put it in sleep/hibernation mode. With regard to off it for the night, then you need to turn it off. I think it will be useless to hear this buzz all night. Laptop can easily be left for the night, it'll fall asleep itself and wait until you wake it. But do not leave your computer on battery power, connect it to the network.
But the on/off is not necessary to abuse. All the technic, not just a computer, do not like to be turned on or off. Usually all damage occured during turning on. So for the PC is better to work an extra hour safely than start a new.
Well, of course, keep your computer turned on for weeks, it is also not necessary, this is not the server that run for months.

And the most important, if you are shutting down your computer, do it correctly and not by PULLING the plug out of the socket, and then your computer will work long and stably. Good luck!

Solve : Acer Aspire one 722 Really need help?

Answer»

Have a cheap Acer Aspire one 722 netbook with WINDOWS 7 that belongs to one of my granddaughters.
It has become extremely slow slow. I figured a lot of junk files and no maintenance. Ran Kaspersky twice and had no problems. Then removed junk files and browsing HISTORY. During defrag harddrive after several minutes it shut the pc off. Retried again with same results. Then ran disc check and repair and same thing happened. Went to system restore,
tried that twice, both failed. Figured it was time for a recovery to factory condition. I had made a system image on a usb flashdrive when I purchased it for her. Followed all instructions. When it reach "Installing Windows Files" that shut the pc off. Tried again 3 times with same results. Removed flashdrive, reset bootup and started it up. Went back to advanced recovery and choose option 2, recovery from pc harddrive. All went well untill it reached, "SETUP is
Starting Services" I then got a message, "Windows could not FINISH configuring the system. To attempt to resume
configuration restart the computer". I have restarted 8 times. Sure could use some help.
Sounds like the HDD is toast...DLoad and run the manuf. diags. on it ...You may have multiple issues.

The times when it shut off while doing things sounds like it might be an overheating issue so make sure the air vents are clear of dirt & lint and make sure the fan is running. Overheating might have been why it was running slow as well.

Your current install issue could very well be caused by the hdd so follow patio's advice for that.Thank you both for the help. Will let you know how I make out.Quote from: AtjehCyber.com on July 07, 2015, 10:16:33 AM

Generic answer. When several attempts have been made to restore a PC to factory settings FAIL, the course is almost always hardware and Hard Drive in particular. Why are you quoting someone who didn't contribute ? ?

Solve : Windows 7 - "Installer Service Not Available"?

Answer» HI, My computer (HP Pavilion Desktop), or should I say Windows 7 (Up to date on Microsoft updates prior to problem) will not allow programs to be installed. I get a pop up window stating that the Installer Service Is Not Available. I have RUN Kaspersky 2015 (Up to date) and iObit System Care 8. Both these programs COME up clean.
When it comes to sorting out this KIND of problem I am a complete 'rookie', so hopefully someone may have the answer to this problem, as I really don't want to take the factory RESET option as it would really be a real pain.

Solve : Networking Oddities?

Answer»

I've just re-installed WINDOWS on a new hard drive, installation went on fine without a hitch. Activated, no problems...

I didn't notice any problems until I installed LAN drivers. Again the installation went on fine and dandy, but no automatic driver updates occured. I tried manually updating (via device manager) but it just GETS STUCK endlessly searching. Windows update ALSO does the same thing.

I also can't join a homegroup, after a long WAIT I receive a simple message stating "Can't join Homegroup" (Although this may be due to the same name being re-used).

So i'm kind of stumped. Without an error message to go on... well where do you start? Oh and FIY: I have internet access as evidenced by this forum post (from the offending PC).

[Profile PC] When you installed Windows again, did it include all drivers? The drivers should be on another CD from the computer manufacture.

How do you get Internet? Some kind of thing must be working.
Do you have another PC or laptop on a LAN?
Never mind, I download a copy of Windows from Microsoft foolishly thinking that it would be a more up to date version than my launch date disc. As it turned out Windows did not feel it necessary to tell me that it needed to shutdown to install updates which would allow Windows to receive more updates (I believe they had some sort of security problem with the original system).

Did you try changing it back and has it changed to black since? Is this a genuine copy of Windows? Windows will switch to a black background if WGA detects a pirated copy of Windows.no i dont have anti-virus. but i just played a couple csgo games and the wallpaper is back to what it was. maybe it was because I just booted up my pc idk?If you go on-line, you have to have some protection.
Well I mean that's not my concern, my concern is whether or not these programs are harmful because I have never seen them with no description or username under task managerAgain, that is normal operaton. winlogin.exe and csrss.exe are Windows system PROCESSES and atieclxx.exe is your VIDEO card drivers. They are part of the system so are running without a user.Remember to only install one antivirus!

1) Avast! Home Edition
2) AVG Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) MicroSoft Security Essentials All versions and all languages.
5) Comodo Antivirus (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses ADDITIONAL resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Solve : light version of Windows 7?

Answer»

there are lots of editions of windows 7 both avalible only to the consumer/company and only to companies (7 home premium, embedded standerd 7, Windows THIN pc, Windows 7 Pro, Windows 7 Starter, ect.) but which one is truly the lightest?

Windows XP is lighter then windows 7 but it's old and I want to get away from it.... I want to find an EDITION of windows 7 that would make a netbook or any older laptop work well... would only really use it for the internet and not much more

I don't really want to deal with Linux, please don't suggest that!Windows 7 Starter Edition is what came with most lightweight Netbooks with Intel Atom CPU's about 6 years ago. I decided 6 years ago to buy my Toshiba Netbook with Windows XP Home because I knew that XP would run well on a lightweight dual-core at 1.66Ghz and only 1GB of DDR2-667Mhz memory. My concern with Windows 7 Starter and only 1GB RAM was that 1GB was going to be a bottleneck. Later I upgraded to 2GB RAM after I was given a dead laptop that had 2 x 2GB DDR2 667Mhz sticks in it and I swapped out the 1GB for a 2GB stick which is maximum supported in the single RAM slot that the netbook has. I have been tempted to upgrade to 7, but I have heard from others that Windows 7 Home Premium of which I use to have an available unused license key available for from the 3 license package I bought I was told was going to crawl on a Intel Atom 1.66Ghz CPU. So I left mine at Windows XP Home and SP3.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editionsStarter is the lightest but is not available on the retail market - It can only be found pre-installed on machines. All the other editions will be around the same. Realistically you don't need THAT much for Windows 7 to run reasonably well, for basic web browsing you would be okay with 2gb of RAM. Embeded Standard and ThinPC are also not available on the retail market and are not designed to be used as general purpose OSs.

What you do need to consider however is the cost of the upgrade - This will likely be around $100 which would often be not far off the cost of a much more powerful, used Windows 7 laptop.my netbook never had the option of coming with Windows 7 Starter, it only came with Windows 7 Home Premium and was about $700 when it was new.... I got it for $200 and was wondering how could I make it run at it's fastest? I disabled all visual themes, set walpaper to solid color and set performance to best for performance. what elce could I do? I also don't have any programs, exept for Google Chrome and I have absolutly no files on the computer. What machine is this? What spec is it?Quote from: Whitie III on May 28, 2015, 03:19:27 PM

You may be going the wrong way. There is no easy way to make it faster other than two areas. FIRST is more memory, which is limited in the 32 bit version. Second is the use of a Solid State Drive alongside the regular drive. But your Net book already has a SSD?

still running the factory build so the computer so is running like it come out of the box exept for the removal of some factory adware and addition of google chrome... don't even watch hd on my other computers... I think this computer has the best keyboard though... maybe the new ssd i got on it's way will speed it up a little plus make it run a slight bit cooler as i think this netbook has a 5400 RPM drive and not a 7200 RPM hdd for longer battery life as they probably would claim Hi. I'm new here but I've found that a cooling pad w/fan keeps my hot-running Acer mini pretty cool. Just a suggestion.

Solve : Factory restore hard drive through another computer?

Answer»

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite C-650. I ENTERED the factory recovery mode by pressing "0" upon startup. The factory restore mode continued as it usually does (I had done this a few times before for maintenance). Right after the Warning screen I received an error: f3-fff6-0011. No one on the Toshiba forum was able to identify this error. I am now unable to boot windows in any mode.

What I want to do is take the HDD from the Toshiba, plug it into my Acer and either factory reset the HDD from my Acer or create a factory restore partition from the Acer, and then put the HDD back into the Toshiba. That way the windows copy that is TIED to the Toshiba motherboard will still work... if this is possible.

Unless of course there is a way to exit the factory restore screen (which I am currently unable to exit on the Toshiba). I am unable to boot to SAFE Mode as of the most recent boot attempt. Putting it into another PC won't work...
Replace the CMOS battery with all power and battery removed and start over...Quote

Putting it into another PC won't work...

Would only work if built from same exact make/model computer. So if you had 2 of the same computer, you could build on one and relocate the drive to the other such as if you had a bad optical drive on one of them and had the recovery media on disc. But otherwise like patio stated it wont work. The factory restore media tests the SYSTEM hardware to make sure that it can legally be installed to that hardware and so if you have a hardware combination that is not the same as what was original intended for the build, it will error out or refuse to restore to factory.

I'd try patios suggestion of:

Replace the CMOS battery with all power and battery removed and start over...

On laptops sometimes the CMOS battery is hard to find...

Solve : Need a CMD to somehow boot into the Recovery partition??

Answer»

My Acer Aspire One netbook, Model AOD250, is no longer supported by the Mfg site. It's original OS was XP Home and was upgraded to 7Ultimate, which worked fine until last week. Ever since I'm getting BSOD Stop error ox00000A-2-1, then 0x81C197IE, all in the same sequence. Do you think that "IE" at the end could be that Internet Explorer might be the culprit? At any rate, I never use anything other than FireFox. Can't get into Safe Mode no how, EVEN with a CMD, but I can get to Recovery. I'd made backups but the system says I can't use them, and if I could just find a cmd to MAKE it boot into the recovery partition maybe then it would be okay. Tried doing what was suggested in some of the other BSOD posts, but without Safe Mode I'm STUCK. Won't recognize my USB or anything else. Sorry if I'm being long-winded here. As I bought the netbook used it came with no recovery disks. My bad.
Please help as soon as you can, I realize how busy you must be. Thanks. The info on using the Recovery Partition is still listed at the Acer site...doesn't matter if it's out of warranty or not...it should work.
Unless the Recovery partition has been messed with...Quote

That's what I'm afraid of, thanks. I just can't figure out what to do. BTW, that first sentence is not meant as it might sound. Thanks, I'll try it.F8 should still get you to safemode.....tap it repeatedly right after powerup...
If it doesn't work then Win install is shot...or the HDD has issues.Quote from: Fran49 on June 18, 2015, 09:25:52 AM

You could always install Linux to this system which is a Free OS and try that out vs throwing away the computer. If you just web surf and dont play heavy gaming that would require Windows, its a method that might save you some money not having to buy a new laptop. I have helped many people install Linux to their older laptops and in some cases the laptops run better than ever on Linux vs Windows such as a Pentium 4 era Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz laptop with 768MB RAM that was lagging badly with Vista and I have my friend try out Linux Mint 9 LTS on it and he loved it and still uses it since he doesnt play any games on it and uses it for RESEARCH and writing papers with Open Office.

Solve : My PC keeps crashing?

Answer»

It happened twice this week. First time it happened I had to force restart. Yesterday it happened again but this time I had the BSOD. I tried to CAPTURE the screen with the camera but it away before I could.

I think both times it happened while I was playing a game called Warframe. First I hear that "disconnecting" SOUND (the sound you hear when you remove something from the USB/audio ports etc) coming from the speakers. That sound happens every 10 -20 secs or so. Then suddenly the PC freezes and at the same time I hear a loud buzzing noise coming from the speakers.

I looked it up and I read it could be the sound card (?).

PC Specs:

Dell

GPU: GeForce GTX 650

CPU: Inetl (R) Core (TM) i5-2300 CPU @ 2.80GHz

Memory: 6.00 GB RAM (5.98 usable)

Current resolution: 1920x1080, 60Hz

Driver version: 352.86

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

Systems type: 64-bit OS

It happened again just now, but I got a screenshot of the BSOD.

It happened as soon as I connected a game controller into the USB PORT in the BACK of the PC. Again the Warframe game was open, but now I'm starting think it has something to do with that port in the back.

Borrow a sound card and swap it in there...you'll know overnite.
Make sure all power is unplugged swappin the card...

PS. you will NEED to install the cards drivers from the manuf. site...OKay I'll try this and I hope it works. *Hugs*

Solve : Backup keeps failing...?

Answer»

My laptop's getting SLOW so I want to format. But I can't seem to BACKUP my data on my EXTERNAL hard drive. This 500GB drive already contains the backup of my other laptop, but it has just about enough space to contain the backup of this one, too. It has 283GB free and my computer has only 277.5GB stored data.

I tried backing up my data to it using Windows Backup & Restore, but AROUND HALFWAY through it says that a backup file could not be created because of an I/O device error (the error code is 0x8078002A). I've done this several times with the same results. I ran a Chkdsk on my hard drive as admin, but in normal mode. Windows found no problems.

How can I fix this?

Hey you're the one who always help me!

How much space should I free up? It should work if I free up space on my internal too right? As much as you can...Please be more specific. I managed with great difficulty to free up a lot of space. I am now using 192.2GB of used data on my laptop and 300GB free space on my external. How much longer must I go on?The Windows Backup/Restore tool is senselessly bad at either backing up or restoring, IMO.

-It will apparently fail on "Advanced Format" Drives, which use a 4K physical sector.
-It is reported that it often fails with USB Devices.
-A myriad of other issues, usually with equally descriptive errors and arbitrary, generic "Device I/O Errors" because the backup tool makes huge assumptions about the disks it is backing up to.

My advice would be to dump the Windows Backup/Restore tool entirely and use something like Macrium Reflect to create a disk image of your laptop drive and save it on the external. You'll be able to access the contents of the image piecemeal if desired as well.
Couldn't agree more...Macrium Reflect.
Good program!
Download for the site or fem Major Geeks

The program can also create a bookable CD. Which you must do before you need it.

Solve : Installing Windows 7 in Computer with 8.1?

Answer»

I foolishly bought a Dell All-in-One with Windows 8.1 and only 4 gigs of RAM. It would not (could not) do anything, not even play a simple video. Dell wouldn't HELP me and kept insisting it was fine. I don't know a lot about computers and kept trying to make it work until the return period had expired. Now I'm stuck with it.

I added another 4 gigs of RAM but that's all it will take. It works a little better now but is still pretty useless.

I'm willing to buy Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit with a license key to put on it (instead of the 8.1) but I don't know if it will take Win 7. I've tried to look it up with no success. Win 7 would make it compatible with my laptop which would be another plus.

Here's the info about it:

I've been told that it has a laptop system in it.

Dell Inspiron 20, Model 3045
Processor: E1-2500 APU with Radon HD Graphics (1.40 GHz)
64 bit os, x64-based processor
Now has 8 GIGs of installed RAM

Does not have touch capability.

I would be so appreciative of any help or advice.

ThanksI can't see Windows 7 making it much faster, the CPU that that machine is an extremely low end laptop chip - You won't get much more than basic web browsing out of it. You'll still get the free upgrade to Windows 10 when that comes out but I doubt that will make much of a difference. The machine is certainly not worth spending the $100+ for a new copy of Windows 7 for it. If anything, Windows 8 is slightly faster than 7.

If I'm totally honest you would be better off selling that machine and putting the money from that along with the money you would have spent on Windows 7 to get a new, more powerful machine (potentially used/refurbished). The CPU will be a limitation in anything you do.I agree with Camerongray if your looking for a 2nd opinion.

Its unfortunate that the ADDITIONAL 4GB of RAM probably made no difference for you. If you were to sell this computer, I would put it back to 4GB and sell the RAM stick separately or retain the stick for a better computer that you pick up as a refurb that uses that same RAM type/speed.

I have a Netbook that I bought in 2009 with Intel Atom 1.66Ghz was ok for about 2 years of its life and then it quickly lost its battle with trying to keep up with mostly video streams. As the players and videos became more to process, higher definition, the netbook started to lag. I thought maybe a system restore back to factory might be the cure, but I did that and its clearly the fact that the content to be played is more demanding these days vs 6 years ago. I tried adding more RAM to see if that would help, but it didnt help much going from 1GB to 2GB of RAM with it running Windows XP Home SP3. I have been tempted to sell the netbook, but the fact is that its just not worth much and I might as well just retain it for wired/wireless network troubleshooting with a nice small compact computer with 9 hr battery life and occasional programming. I probably only use it 1 or 2 times a month anymore vs using it almost daily 4 or 5 years ago.

You might find where your computer isnt worth much money and it might be worth just keeping for checking e-mail and uses other than video game or video play like my netbook is. Might even be good to keep it for a tinker computer for friends or family to use when you dont want them on your better computer if you are the head of household etc.Thank you both so much for the disappointing but very needed information. I guess I'll just wait for Windows 10 and, hopefully, that will make it a little better.

I can't afford to buy a new computer right now so I'll just have to live with this one for a while. Fortunately, I have my old laptop which still runs great but doesn't have the beautiful big screen of the new computer.

I can't afford to buy a new computer right now so I'll just have to live with this one for a while. Fortunately, I have my old laptop which still runs great but doesn't have the beautiful big screen of the new computer.
Just a thought - If your laptop runs better, why not sell the desktop and put some of the money you get towards a nice separate screen for your laptop?Well, I didn't know I could attach it to a separate screen. I bought the All-in-One so it wouldn't take up a lot of room on my desk and it's great that way. If I bought a separate screen could I also use my wireless keyboard and mouse? They are perfect and exactly what I want. I wouldn't want to have to type on the laptop with the other screen off to the side.

Also, if I sold my All-in-One, how much do you think I could get for it? I paid $350 for it last November. Do you think anyone would even want it?I have another question. A friend gave me a disk with Linux on it because he said it would not use as much memory as 8.1 and the new computer would probably run better.

It seems that to install the Linux, though, INVOLVES a lot of complicated partitioning because of the Win 8.1. I don't know anything about partitioning so I can't install it and my friend isn't available to help me.

Would Linux be better if I could get it on there somehow? If you can give us the model number of laptop you have then I can see what sort of monitors you can connect to it, and yes, you can use your wireless keyboard and mouse. You could even use the laptop screen and external monitor at the same time to show different things. For example you could have a video playing on the laptop's screen while you work on the external one!

As far as selling it, it totally depends on the market in your area, your best bet would be to check eBay to see what they are going for.

As far as Linux goes, I wouldn't bother - People claim that Linux is a magical solution to make your computer faster but in real world use it'll probably be just about the same. Not to mention you will need to relearn how everything works. Linux is great if you are actually interested in trying it but it's not a magical solution to problems with Windows. I run a very minimalistic Linux setup and it uses pretty much just as much memory and runs around the same speed as Windows 8.1 did on the same hardware.Thank you so much. You are really being so kind and helpful.

I think my laptop model number is Inspiron N5050. Does that seem like a model number? I wasn't sure where to find it.Yep - That's the model - Pretty good machine too. You should be able to connect any monitor to that that supports either a VGA or HDMI connection (HDMI would be better) - Pretty much any monitor will support at least one of these. Then it really just comes down to how much you can spend, it may be worth just going to a store and looking at the monitors they have to see what you like.

I'd look at ones with a resolution around 1920x1080 (1080p) and between 22" and 24" in size. This would be fairly common and affordable nowadays and is actually higher resolution than your all-in-one machine. Thanks, Cameron. You have been more helpful than all the hours I spent on the phone with Dell technicians who were supposed to be helping me but were just leading me on and letting me think that they could actually make my computer work well.

You know, I trusted Dell. I never thought that they would sell me an, essentially, worthless computer. I knew it wasn't going to be awesome for the price I paid but I thought it would be able to perform as well as a basic laptop. Usually, I buy most things from Amazon.com but I remember thinking that it would be better to buy directly from Dell because they would provide any technical support I might need. Instead, I just got LIES and double-talk about why it wouldn't even play a simple video until the period for returning it had passed.

Do you know of any site where I could post a review of my experience? Someplace that gets a lot of attention? I think Dell deserves to know how I feel about them now and that I will never buy another product from them again. No problem!

There are sites like TrustPilot that certainly would let you leave a review but if I'm honest, this isn't really Dell's fault - the machine is simply designed for very light tasks such as extremely basic web browsing/office work and not much more than that.

Dell make a wide range of computers ranging from the very low end to extremely powerful, high end systems and in general they are one of the best brands of prebuilt computer out there. Unfortunately it then comes down to the end user to pick a machine that is appropriate for their needs although this isn't always that simple.

It is annoying that technical support didn't flat out say that the machine was probably too low end for what you were doing but in general people in these support departments are working entirely from scripts and I imagine simply wouldn't even know how well that particular machine should perform so they will just go through their "Customer claims the computer is slow" script - This is the same or even worse with almost all major companies unless you get escalated to a higher level of support where you get someone who actually understands what they are doing.

Dell certainly has to be right up there with one of the best computer manufacturers that I have dealt with, IBM being the only one that I have found to be the same/better.Really this would be the same for every single manufacturer. Bottom-of-the-barrel systems from any manufacturer unfortunately are incredibly unusable for most tasks. The specs for your All-In-One are similar to the specs for a Lenovo Laptop system I was tasked with getting working better. Even after cleaning the system up it was still- to me- unusably slow and unresponsive, considering my laptop that was 7 years older and only $100 more expensive at the time was running circles around it. I was able to barely get it to the point where it could play youtube videos by removing a lot of preinstalled garbage from the system.

Realistically, you would have had the exact same problems with a similar system from any name-brand manufacturer, since their lower-priced systems and Laptops tend to walk a fine line in terms of usability. (And, arguably- consumer ethics)

That isn't to suggest you shouldn't give them a piece of your mind of course . I did find Dells site on the model which appears to have a Review function:

http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-3045-aio/pd

However it is notable that somehow they have no reviews listed. They may check reviews and remove negative ones or something.I know you guys are right. Dell probably isn't any worse than other companies. I couldn't be happier with my Dell laptop, actually, so I probably will buy from Dell again but not so impulsively or ignorantly. I'll get some good advice first.

I wish I had known about this web site then. I would have gotten some great help, I'm sure.

The funny thing is that sometimes this computer works pretty well - like right now. But at other times- most of the time - it will take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes just to load each page which is so annoying. I wish I knew why it varies like that.

I looked at that link, BC_Programmer, and this is the description there, "Have more fun and get more done with this all-in-one desktop featuring a large HD+ display and advanced technology." I'm not having any fun or getting much done and, apparently, it does not have very advanced technology. The display is quite nice, though, and so is the sound quality.

Solve : Black Boxes? What's Happening??

Answer»

Hello all,

I have never had this issue before, so I'm completely at a loss of what to do.

As of today, whenever I try to scroll down a page in my browser(when the processor is being heavily used) the entire page goes black. Little glitches like scroll bars appear all over the screen and it slowly sorts itself out, but usually remains partially black until i scroll back up to the top of the page.

Also, when I'm in a menu, everything I scroll over goes either black, or rainbowed. Right=clicking, for example, and going to paste from the top, leaves most of the menu blacked out, like some Soviet censor got his hands on it. Big black boxes, sometimes with rainbow colored single PIXEL lines are what is happening.

Any ideas on how to fix? Started a few hours ago. Ran my anti-Virus and CCleaner but no effect.Sorry for double, here's a screen grab of what's going on.

Note that this is now happening even without my cpu using a ton of power.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]And again apologies for multiple postings; I'm figuring out as I go along what's wrong. Here are TWO more images. The red boxes are where images OUGHT to be; this is a google image page.

The second picture shows the 'rainbow' effect I spoke of, when a pop-up menu shows data for a file.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Tell us about your computer. What operating system are you running? What brand & model? what graphics card/chip do you have? The more information the better.
My initial suspicion is that you need to update your graphics driver, but without more details, I can't say for sure.Quote

My initial suspicion is that you need to update your graphics driver, but without more details, I can't say for sure.

I also agree that graphics driver should be updated first with a driver from the maker of the GPU such as AMD if ATI Radeon etc, nVidia if a GeForce GPU, or Intel for INTEL HD etc. Avoid using the default that Microsoft goes with.Let's see:

-Windows 7 Ultimate
-AMD Athlon II X3 450 Processor
-10GB RAM
64-bit

-AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

Erhmm.... anything else you guys need?

I have had zero messages or pop ups saying I need to update, is that normal? It just switched abruptly to this. It also won't let me scroll down internet pages. My first scroll turns the page completely black; only when i select a new tab and then go back does it return to normal, and then it goes to black again if i try to scroll once more.It may sound like a stupid QUESTION but does it do that every time you boot?I honestly haven't tried rebooting the computer.

I have a good 100+ tabs of important information in chrome and mozilla right now and I'm scared to reboot in case they get "forgotten" which is rare but has happened.

Should I reboot?

I used AMD's AUTO detect utility and it said I have all latest drivers installed.Re-booting is sometimes the best thing you can do for a computer.

Solve : USB Mass Storage Issue?

Answer»

I transferred the Windows 7-64 bit from one SSD to another SSD, it boots & functions except for 1 thing; Device Manager shows Error Code 10 (This device cannot start) on any & all USB Mass Storage DEVICES. Windows 10 on the same SSD & on the same computer does not have this issue. USB mouse works under all scenarios.

Don't think it's something to do with the difference in SSD's: Samsung 840EVO-120GB vs Samsung 850EVO-240GB.
2 Windows builds on a single 120GB fit, but with little room left over.
Am now back to using 2 drives: Samsung 840EVO-120GB & WD Scorpio Black 320GB.

I've tried all the "Code 10 Error Message" fixes & none of them work. Performing an OS repair may do more HARM than good. Anyway, Windows 7 will be upgraded to Windows 10 soon. This one REALLY has me baffled.

If nothing else, learned a lot about multiboot with BCD which is nothing like the old boot.ini. It does require a UEFI/BIOS instead of the old BIOS-only. Conversion from MBR to GPT works as does dual booting into either OS.
Interesting fact: If Win7 is the default boot, you get a DOS-type screen to select the boot, if Win10 is the default, you get a graphical screen.

BTW, 2 tools have been indispensable for transferring OS's & repairing BCD's:
1. Latest version of Macrium Reflect v6, WinPE boot disc. This one is good for restoring partitions from a backup drive & can fix boot issues.
2. AOMEI Partition Assistant, WinPE boot disc. This one is good for managing (copying) existing partitions.Last year when I was researching my SSD purchase (Samsung Evo 840) I saw a forum topic about USB Mass Storage Error 10 on Windows 7 new install, and the culprit was Rapid Mode in Samusng Magician.

http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/new-win7-pc-usb-storage-device-driver-code-10.206770/
Thanks. I figured it had to be something to do with Magician. Didn't make sense how it would have any affect on USB.
Right now, I have the 840 installed; Rapid Mode is enabled. Also have INTEL RST enabled.
Magician has this note on the Rapid Mode page:

Limitation: RAPID Mode only accelerates one SSD, even though the system may have more than one supported SSD.

I'll have to try it again sometime.

BTW, I did notice that the Magician TRIM feature was disabled for Win10 since it is supported natively.

Solve : Task Manager, best free A.V..........?

Answer»

About Task Manager : should I be doing some 'clean-up' there ? There's certainly a lot of items running there.

Ok, some hate Windows Defender, what IS a good free Av. ? Should we just try one after another till we find the one most suitable for our particular O.S. ?

THANKS all, for the advice/help/all this while I run WD on my Windows 8.1 and MicroSoft Security Essentials on all my other computer and I find they are up to the task. There's very little VIRUS floating around these. Most of the malware usually zip right by the AV. As for the task Manager, I've never heard of anyone trying to clean it. Those are all process that are running on your computer. UNLESS you're having problems, you should leave them alone. My recommendation would be StartupCPL from Mike Lin...it lets you manage which apps load on startup and decrease your overhead...
Do Not disable ANYTHING that you don't KNOW what it is...

Solve : Dell laptop keys not functioning properly.?

Answer»

Hello! A couple of days ago I spilled cereal on my laptop and the SCREEN went black and stopped working. I FREAKED out and didn't know what to do so I tried wiping it off then got advice to put in rice. I didn't know that I had to turn the laptop off at first so I think the motherboard might have gotten fried in that time it was on

Anyway I turned the laptop off after a while, and today when I turned it on it actually started working and the screen wasn't black so I thought it was all okay

But then When I started typing, the letters would come out differently

For example "D" would be "FSDA" and "Q" would be RWQEU and some letters weren't even working. What's wrong with it? Is it possible that the motherboard is fried or? Please help

As for the rice thing, it's because rice is apparently really good at absorbing liquids or something like that.
But I'm not SURE I can remove the keyboard buttons? What if I can't put them BACK in or break one or something Alcohol is good at reducing water damage It will displace water. Other solvents can work better , but are not available for household use.

Did you ever have this system intentionally connected to a proxy to where this is not malware and just a registry key that needs to be fixed to set the default back to disable proxy?

Neither of our user accounts were ever password protected. Not knowing the password I obviously couldn't access that account. After logging in to the non-password protected "Our Family" account I noticed the desktop screen has the safe mode appearance even though I wasn't in safe mode. Also Java quit working, the audio service wouldn't run, and the 6to4 adapter wasn't working properly among other issues. I decided to try to restore windows to an earlier version. In attempting to do so, I receive this error message:

From before this problem started? No. I'm also unable to use the backup utility now as it "can't be used in safe mode".

What AV programs do you use?
Windows defender and Norton

Has you HDD ever shown any issues before?
None.
If so, when and what?

What is the "the 6to4 adapter' and can the computer run without it?
It translates the IPv6 addresses used by Vista into IPv4 addresses, which are still used by most ISPs, ROUTERS and other networking devices. (Information from ehow). The computer can run properly without it.
Log into Vista as the system Administrator. That is the only account that is named Administrator and to see it you have to do a CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER at the log-in screen. Here is a link tat explains this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/

Once in., create a new user account. This is needed as part of the recovery process when users accounts are corrupted.

But if the Administrator can not function properly, the problem is bey hound what I understand.

Solve : My computer likes to tell me it cannot display this page. IE with Vista Ultimate?

Answer»

My computer sometimes will often say: Internet Explorer can't display this page, when I try to search for something.
Then there may be a long period when it will not do so.
I have tried to understand the suggestions in Internet Tools but can't find anything amiss.
Can anyone offer any sggestions?

Thanks for any help.
Ivan CopasDoes this happen when you put a search phrase in the dual-purpose web address/search box? If you go to google.com, bing.com, etc. first and then enter your search phrase in the search box on the web page, does it work without issue?I had google set as the default and it WOULD load their page every time so I think I SEE the light...
So, your suggestion that it was trying to go two ways at the same time is spot on...
Thanks so much Soybean!
Ivan CopasIn case this issue is not clear to some forum viewers, I'll give an example. If I enter border collie in IE's dual-purpose URL/search box as a search phrase. Instead of doing the search, IE converts the search phrase to http://border%20collie/ and displays the error message: "This page can’t be displayed". As we can see, IE incorrectly attempted to convert the search phrase to a URL, i.e. web address, and that does not work.

I thought this additional explanation might be worthwhile in case anyone KNOWS a solution to make the dual-purpose box work the WAY it is supposed to work. I've often thought the dual-purpose concept was not a smart idea. A separate search box on the browser toolbar was, in my opinion, a better design. I FOUND this technet post which appears to describe the exact same issue. It seems to be caused by different versions of the Provider add-on conflicting with changes made to the search site itself.

Windows 7, PCSpecialist laptop.

If I am holding a key the application/program freezes but my mouse cursor will still be moving around and its still responding just doesn't update VISUALLY until after I release all the keys. For example:

In photoshop I can't do THINGS like shift+clicking or space to navigate around my document.

I can't ctrl+click to select files.
If I'm travelling in game I can't then look around with my mouse.

It happens with GRAPHICS tablet, mouse, trackpad and I've tried UPDATING graphics and tablet drivers, tried adjusting Palmcheck settings - so I just don't know now.

This is a hindering my work (and play) so any constructive feedback is hugely appreciated!Hi it might be your keyboard and mouse are broke all somethings wrong with the connection. Ignore the above post. Does the same THING happen in safe mode?

Solve : Going from Windows8.1 to XP?

I have a new Lenovo G500 that came with Windows8, now upgraded to 8.1. I don't like it, and would like to install Windows 7. I imagine if it will run Windows 8 it will run 7 without any problems. What's the best way to buy it? I would like to receive a disk as opposed to just downloading it, and I'm not super-computer savvy, but can load it from a CD. Can I save the 8.1 system to a CD or something in case I want to use it later? I'm used to XP, and feel I can learn 7 faster than I can learn 8. TIA.1st thing i would do is visit the manuf. site and make SURE the PC has Win7 drivers for EVERYTHING...especially if it's a laptop...
As far as purchasing 7 i would only go to a reliable Vendor for it...shop around.

GOOD SUGGESTION Patio !!!!! I bought Windows XP Pro when in college through a website called Gradware.com 12 years ago and got this OS for just $40. I also got Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2002 edition for $99.99 vs the $500 price tag I think it was without student discount. The manufacturer's website.

Here is the appropriate page for that model on Lenovo's website. You'd have to install all the Windows 7 Drivers after installing Windows 7 on the machine. (with the exception of the BIOS FILE)Quote from: ah100 on March 06, 2014, 09:11:00 PM

OPEN Device Manager and look for any yellow triangles with ! in them. That indicates the device is not working properly and most likely needs a valid driver from the manufacturer (for that device).

In 2009 I bought a Compaq computer with W7Pro downgraded to XP. Now I would like to go back to W7 Pro on it and do not know exactly how to PROCEED. I was sent discs along with it, I believe for 7. Small problem--I believe the discs are DVD and the player on the pc for CDs only. I do have the product key. Could I download W7Pro from the internet, if the discs do not work?
Any other tips would be welcome because I barely know the questions to ask for such an endeavor, let alone the answers.First, since there is no direct upgrade path from XP to W7 you need to be prepared to format and start from scratch. All key data needs to be copied to some off-disc medium and you will have to reinstall all programs. As for installing without a dvd drive, see here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/how-can-i-install-windows-7-without-a-dvd-drive/306ccb07-690f-4bd9-9dca-9793058bfd8aThe best solution all around would be using the original discs as they would contain all neccessary Drivers specifically for that PC...
Why do you think it's only a CD player and not DVD ? ?

Worst case if it is indeed CD only you could borrow 1 for the install and swap it in there til finished.Okay--A Belarc report that I found says it has hpCDDVDW TS-H653R [CD-ROM drive]. The reason I thought it must not handle DVDs is because I have tried to copy my document files onto a DVD. Something must have been wrong OTHERWISE. I have learned in the past that some brands of CDs, even, will not work when others do. Still, I have managed to GET all the files from documents that I think most important to save off onto CDs. I am not concerned about saving my info. I want to do a CLEAN install. I already have a W7Pro 64 bit machine that I bought and use regularly because I was afraid of this task with the XP. But now the time is about up and I feel I must get er done. I simply want to get W7 onto the other machine. Folks seem to think I am concerned about saving and transferring files, but that is not it.
Thanks for the tips. misrQuote

Put the original Win7 DVD in...re-BOOT the PC and run Setup. Thanks again. misrAnytime...
PS. If it doesn't load the 1st time you need to change the CD drive to 1st in the boot order...
