Solve : Computer fan going crazy?

Answer»

I have a hp pavillion p7-1254
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03135882
Often times after having my computer on for not longer than 30 MINUTES the fan will turn on really hard for about 10 seconds then stop. It will do it again a couple minutes later and just stop. It may do this 2-3 times in a row and then not do it for hours. Il feel around inside and its not dusty and nothing in there is warm that i can feel. Why does it do this?I read your topic and I have to say that I'm sorry that you're having this issue. Although I'm not a computer expert just yet, my guess would be that your fan is either failing or is not plugged in all the way.

My questions to you are
Have you overclocked your hardware?

What I mean by this is is your hardware running faster in speed then what it's designed for?

If the answer is yes, then return your hardware speeds to the default
If the answer is no, then continue reading

Is the fan plugged in all the way to the system board. There should be good contact. It's possible that the fan connector is lose.

If the fan looks good, but still does what you claim, then replace the fan and see what happens.

Where is your fan in the computer? If the fan is making a groaning sound which VIBRATES the computer case then its likely bad and should be replaced.

However if it comes on only when the CPU is really busy it is likely functioning as intended with the system set up for variable fan speed controls in which when the system is idle fans can slow or stop spinning and when the system is busy processing data and senses a rise in temp from thermo couple, it will increase a fan speed or TWO to cool the system down.

We had some HP desktop systems at a business which had an air RAM ( squirl cage ) fan mounted above the heatsink of the CPU and when the systems were processing something intensive the CPU fans would wind right up and sound like a jet getting ready for lift off. When the systems were done processing whatever they were doing that was CPU intensive the system would quiet down and idle or operate quietly again.

Solve : toshiba laptop problem?

Answer»

I was on my LAPTOP plugged-in and charging, when all of a sudden the whole thing went black. No LIGHTS at all VISIBLE. A pal of mine said to remove the battery and re-insert after a couple minutes. I did and no luck. Is the laptop dead in the water? The battery is a replacement for the original, and is about 6 months old. The laptop is about 4 years old.Is the battery a "generic" replacement ...or OEM ? ?
Does it work on AC power only ?It's generic. If just the battery tanked, would none of the lites LIGHT up, even though it's plugged in and charging?Answer question # 2...It did work on both battery or plugged in to ACOne more time...
Does it work properly now on A/C only ? ?

If so ...replace the generic battery. It doesn't work on anything. No lights lit in any configuration.Try this
1. Remove the battery and cable
2. Press and hold the power BUTTON for 30 seconds.
3. plug it back in and try it

Solve : Blue screen of death Fatal Error c000021a?

Answer»

Hello all !!!!

Hope things are well.

My daughters HP Pavilion Entertainment PC Running Vista

Notebook Model - dv5 notebook
system board - 30f2
Processor type - amd turion x2 dual core MOBIL rm-70
Processor speed - 2000 mhz
total memory - 3072 mb
bios ver - f.07

When I try to start the pc I get the blue screen of death fatal error c000021a. I cannot get it to finish a boot even in safe mode.
I looked up the error code and there is a fix for it but you have to be able to bring up your pc, which I Can't. I copied the fix to a disk but it's not recognized. I also tried rebooting from last known GOOD boot, to no avail.

HELP !!!

Thanks in ADVANCE,
MP.1) I've moved this to an appropriate forum.

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) Do you have a vista cd?Thanks wasn't sure where it belonged "ASSUMING" this was caused by a virus.

According to my daughter nothing at all is new. I know there is no new hardware because I would have been involved and she hasn't downloaded any new software.

I do not have a vista cd I don't think it came with one but I will look again.

All i found is 2 Gateway sys restoration cds and a Windows 98 cd.Does the system have a restore partition? We may end up needing it.

I can walk you through a ram test and a disk check, but I doubt either is the cause of your problem (although it is possible). If they don't work and if you don't have a Vista cd the only other option I can think of is to restore an image if you've been using disc imaging software (as you always should) or a factory restore if there is a restore partition or disc.No sys partition and no disk. I haven't been imaging either.

I am running a full hard drive test, 63% complete, don't think I will get any errors either.

Last resort is a factory restore ? Not sure I've seen that option but we can try anything at this point.

TYVM. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-e-g-Windows-8-and-Software/How-to-factory-reset-my-pavilion-dv5-hp-laptop/td-p/2245873Will try that as soon as the HD test completes.

THANKS AGAIN.You're welcome.

Since the shipment of the September 2013 Security BULLETIN Release, we have received reports of updates being offered for installation multiple times, or certain cases where updates were not offered via Windows SERVER Update Services (WSUS) or System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).

We have investigated the issue, established the cause, and we have released new updates that will cease the unnecessary re-targeting of the updates or the correct offering of these updates.

We have received escalations related to targeting for the following KB's.

MICROSOFT SECURITY BULLETIN MS13-072

Security Update for Word 2003 (KB2817682)

Been monitoring this, website was updated.

Known issues with this update

Customers may have been repeatedly offered this update even though it was already installed.

Note This issue is resolved by a detection change released September 13, 2013. This change did not affect the updated files. This change only affects the way that we offer the updates to customers. Customers who have successfully installed the update do not have to take any action. Strange. I didn't get this issue on my Windows 7 laptop.

Um... the updates still show up in my "Restore Hidden Updates" because I hid the updates to STOP the installation loop from happening.

What do I do?

Restore the updates and try installing the updates one last time?Quote from: Computer_Commando on September 13, 2013, 05:22:38 PM

I guess I'll just leave the updates hidden then...

Solve : Windows 7 freezing?

When I enter some game on my computer (Win 7) it just freeze:I have been checking is my computer capable of running that game, and it is.So I don't know what's the problem.Only PES 2013 run's fine and some older game's with bad graphics (AoE 2).I was trying yesterday to play Age of mythology and it has just freezed right on the beginning in the menu. It's same with CoD, GTA SA(i played it before when i had WINDOWS XP).Please provide make/model of computer and specs, or if its a custom built computer, the specs.

Also are you running 32 or 64 bit version of Windows 7?
Also how much free hard drive do you have?

Also you REFER to the fact that games ran fine under XP and now problems with Windows 7. Is this a recent upgrade to where after the upgrade these problems started or after the upgrade the games ran fine and then all of a sudden you have run into problems, so games that ran fine on this computer under Windows 7 before are now having problems?Operating System

Realtek High Definition Audio
here are my specs.I'm running 32 bit version.I have 88.8 GB free hard drive. These problems started after the upgrade, games run fine and all of the sudden they started freezing 1GB RAM is sort of the BARE minimum for Windows 7 32-bit any flavor. You may want to try upgrading to at least 2GB of RAM. 1GB was fine for Windows XP and Games, but there is not much memory for gaming when Windows 7 32-bit really requires 1GB as a non gaming system. If you get another 1GB stick you can also benefit from dual-channel memory if your motherboard supports this feature. Or you can add a 2GB stick and max out the memory at 3GB for the 32-bit OS which would be better for gaming.

This motherboard supports a maximum of 4GB RAM, ( 2 x 2GB sticks ) DDR2 800Mhz, however with 32-bit OS your limited to a maximum of 3GB so if you want to max it out, I'd find a 2GB stick that is of same speed and bring it up to 3GB. * You can also mix faster with slower RAM sometimes, and the memory will sync at the slower speed, however I dont suggest mixing RAM of different speeds as for you can run into problems.

OK.Thank you very much,I will upgrade it as soon as I can.

Solve : warning noise?

Answer»

I keep getting sound LIKE "BEE -dud" every TIME I move my laptop, especially when it is warm.Once again, please provide more information.

What laptop are you using when this issue occurs? How warm is it getting - would you say it is hot? Is it when you pick it up, or move it at all - even just a little bump?

Is this a Sony laptop? Please CHECK if the sound is coming from your hard drive, or from your laptop speaker. If it is coming from your hard drive - immediately backup all important files before doing anything else. You already have an active THREAD on this topic. I'm locking this thread - please don't post the same question more than once.

Solve : ASUS X401A Laptop Issue?

Answer»

Hi this is my first post ....

I have the above mentioned Laptop , last night had Windows UPDATES as i powered down , let them finish the switched off . Rebooted Laptop today and went into ASUS recovery process , followed prompts , then X:windows\system32\cmd.exe runs , stops with :

cannot find .........C: Tools\cleanFPROM\APP\x64\vcsCleanSensorFlashEng.exe

The options are close or OK

When i press OK , I get .........

[diskpart/s X:\Tools\FormsatScript3f324.txt] meet error !!

Large RED ERROR on screen .

I have no CDROM on board to redownload windows 7 if that was the issue .

Would be grateful for any help or advice

Thanks

LeeBig warning on screen says: "Do Not Turn off Computer". Since you did not heed this warning, what did you expect?
Recovery process reinstalls Windows from Recovery Partition; you will lose all your personal stuff (if any). It appears that Recovery Partition is EITHER damaged or missing. Windows can be reinstalled from a BOOTABLE USB drive. Which version of Win7?

Solve : Antivirus NEVER finds anything?

Answer»

I have had Qihoo 360 Antivirus on my other old computer for about 2 years. But it had never find ANYTHING at all. Why is this? I thought there must be at least one VIRUS or problem in two years. But it never found anything, except false alarms(on programs and files that are obviously not a virus or problem)If you are sensible you'll never really have a problem with viruses - I myself have also not received a warning about a genuine virus in years!

That said, I have never heard of 'Qihoo 360 Antivirus' and as a result I can't imagine it being of the best quality. You may WANT to consider replacing it with something more well known such as "Microsoft Security Essentials" or "Avast"Qihoo was actually meant to be pretty good and did well in tests, but I heard they sold out not long ago so not sure if that's still the case.
As camerongray says, there's no reason to be concerned that your antivirus hasn't picked up anything, unless of course your computer is acting STRANGE. I haven't had a warning for years either, barring scanning HDDs which I already knew were infected in order to clean them. There is very little viruses around these days. Most of the STUFF I clean is malware and spyware.Hey, thanks for the replies. I just did a scan with another virus tool from Kaspersky, and it detected 8 items.
Also, I have been getting some things like ads and pop ups on my PC.
Qihoo 360 have done well on the tests, and it also done well on my other PC...but never detected anything on this one.
I'm thinking of getting MSE instead.
Thanks.

Solve : What is Trojan?

Answer»

Hi -
I have Windows 7 and use IE 9. This morning I ran SuperAntiSpyware. It found 1 pr5oblem. It was in the registry and was: Trojan.Agent/Gen. My question is: What does that do to my computer? As far as I can tell everything is fine. Does the person who put that in my computer expect to get information? Do they expect to cause my computer to shut down? Any explanation would be appreciated. Thanks BobLike your other post about what Malwarebytes found, this is something Internet users can pick up from using the Internet. For a reference on Trojan Horse malware, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_horse_(computing). And, it's why using protection apps like Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware is a good practice for all Internet users. soybean -
I checked the article you suggested. Now I would like to know how to keep malware out. I have avast Free Antivirus RUNNING at "start". I only run MalwarebytesAntimalware and Super Antispyware about once a week. Should I have both of the two running all the time? I think my Windows Fire WALL is on all the time as I can't figure out how to turn it off. What effect does that have? Thanks for your time. BobQuote

You should not turn it off. Always keep your firewall active. Hi guys
many people think that an antivirus program would solve all their problems. More important in my opinion is that you always open your eyes when installing new software, when getting emails from strangers or clicking on ads or buttons on the internet.
Me myself got a couple of emails with .tar's and .zip's from a strange ITALIAN hotmail account. I opened them on a Linux VM and uploaded them on virustotal.com (really good SITE) and just got trojan results from half of the antivirus programs. => So there always is some new bad stuff AROUND which does not get recognized by every program.
But still a firewall and an antivirusprogram always is something you should use, because it's your small "mother's little helper".

I know that most of you already know these kind of posts, but still not everyone is aware of this problem, so that I posted it again.

-------
I think the .tar's and .zip's were linked with the Adobe Hack, because that was the E-mail I used for my Adobe-Account.

Solve : Better File Search Utility?

Answer»

Quote from: Deuxdad on November 22, 2013, 10:56:46 PM

"SearchMyFiles" by Nirsoft (nirsoft.net). SearchMyFiles will search WITHIN files for whatever string you type in.

Agent Ransack will do that. (Nirsoft have released some very good software. I find a lot of uses for their Nircmd utility.)

Agent Ransack works perfect. Also good to know that it has advanced capabilities to search for a string within files of forgotten file name.Agent Ransack has a lot of features... set up & save complex searches, export search results to a csv file, command line programmable search with no window, etc, the search result list is right clickable like Windows Explorer. I often use it as a Explorer substitute - handy to show all files in a tree (with * as the search term and "search SUBFOLDERS" selected)

Agent Ransack has been around a while and is a solid utility. My only complaint about it is that it doesn't index files and thus the searches are not "instantaneous".Quote from: Allan on November 24, 2013, 06:46:15 AM

Yes, I suppose it's a trade-off between devoting system resources to the indexing task and speed of search. Agent Ransack's publisher, Mythicsoft say

"While indexing can certainly improve the speed of searches in certain circumstances there are many drawbacks.

These drawbacks include:

- Indexing requires significant processor and disk resources simply to build and maintain the index

- INDEXES can become corrupt or out of sync with the actual files

- There are security implications with important data copied to a location not under user control

- It is not feasible to index EVERY file type, especially binary files

- It is not possible to use regular expressions on indexed data".

I don't disagree with any of that ST, I simply prefer Everything for my needs (and the overhead really isn't that bad - at least not on today's systems). Having said that, I do have Agent Ransack installed though I rarely use it.Quote from: Allan on November 24, 2013, 07:47:51 AM

I don't use file search utilities all that much really; I generally know where my files are, or at least which drive and folder they are likely to be in. By the time I have started a search I am quite likely to have found the ones I am interested in. I tend to rely quite a lot on the "Recent files" lists in many applications' file menus.

Yah I noticed that, but I am OK with it. I don't mind telling it to find something and walking away for a minute to get a bottle of water and then come back and its there. I am so use to doing this with scripts that process data anyways that its nothing new to start something and walk away and come back to the end result/solution and hopefully not an error message..LOL

*If i didnt have a copy of my external HDD copied to my local C: drive then it would have been done much sooner, but my perl script was in the copy of the external so it had to run there anyways to find it. It had to search through a massive amount of data.

I was playing with AR the other day and was thinking that one way the makers could speed it up maybe is if they added a feature to discover all files, and then create directory tree checksums and so very quickly it may be able to know that nothing has changed for an entire directory tree and to skip over rediscovery of files and folders etc. However i also thought that sometimes features like this to make it smarter without tapping into an indexing service that eats up resources can actually slow the program down to where maybe it is actually faster at discovering each and every file in every branch of the directory tree than it is to perform a checksum comparison of the whole since it will have to read in the whole anyways to come up with a match or mismatched checksum result to that of the last time it went out on its discovery routine.

As I have found with writing other programs, sometimes what you think is better and faster is actually smarter code but slower to achieve your goal compared to the original less complex code that processes faster even though seems less efficient in design. = One reason why sometimes when I get a program coded up and it works I learned to not bother wasting time attempting to making it better in how it achieves the intended goal, and try not to get SUCKED into the time waste of restructuring to make it smarter and faster. However when the first program written is lacking in a necessary feature, it has to be added in the next rev of it if it is a must have feature that the original code does not possess.

Solve : Virus/Malware?

Answer»

I got a virus EVEN though I use McAfee, then I got a Malware that said send MONEY and we will unlock your computer. Wasn't that STUPID( yet). Virus made every program I tried to RUN show as a virus and it said, cannot exe. It was driving me crazy, it locked out my optical drive-no reboot or b/u disk or . I finally got to boot in a safe mode, had locked out my BACKUPS on hard drive but I found the original load that Dell put on when I purchased the computer. It asked me to format and then load the installation. Lost everything but I got my system back up after a day . Spent two hours with M/S loading patches and then Loaded AVG. McAfee can ***(no help at all-none-zero) . So sometimes if you can get a program to run you can get rid of the virus. I was lucky, just lost replaceable files but if you have files that cannot be replaced, back them up separately on a DVD or thumbdrive or somewhere besides your computer.

Solve : 'Phantom Gap' in Taskbar Is a Menace?

Answer»

My Googling hasn't helped with this issue.

But I did learn something else neat about the Taskbar - the Win key + (1-9) automatically launches or switches to the program PINNED to the Taskbar that is that many positions AWAY from left (eg, Win + 1 launches the program next to the Start button, and so on). So now I need to move my icons around to try to capitalise on that.

But that's not the issue:

In the last five days or so, I've noticed and occasional icon-sized space between icons on my Taskbar:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Note:

Thunderbird is pinned, Adobe and MSPaint are not, so it's not an arbitrary gap between pinned and unpinned icons.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?Any choices listed if you right clik one of the gaps ??
ODDLY enough, no.

Not even the Taskbar context menu (Toolbars> | Cascade Windows, Show Windows Stacked, etc... | Start Task Manager...).

It's like it's a Windows Dead Zone.

(Mixing metaphors now, I know)Have you tried locking/unlocking and toggling taskbar buttons option?Taskbar has been locked since 2003, probably.

That said, I just toggled to see if that does anything.

Also tried reboot.

It's a sporadic issue, so I will pay closer attention to see what are potential triggers. Initially curious if OTHERS had seen/I was overlooking the obvious.I'm wondering if it's a program not closing properly, or something that enhances or otherwise changes the taskbar function. Do you have anything like that installed? If not, check your PROCESSES list, see if there's anything running that you've closed, perhaps it's just not giving up its taskbar space.
It's a strange one, for sure.Are you running any Themes ? ?

Solve : Mysterious software menu after startup?

Answer»

Hi,

A strange menu is appearing (and disappearing in less than a second), after every startup of a Windows 7 laptop. It pops up and goes away with no chance to actually see what it is.

One day the laptop froze right after a startup, while I was running it remotely, giving me the chance to make a Print Screen of that strange hidden application starting up.

Please take a look at the attached image of the menu and its LOGO. If you know what this strange application is doing, and/or if it is something to worry about, LET me know. The logo is a light blue icon with two white GEAR Wheels (cog wheels) inside of a side viewed head, also in white.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I dont recognise the Logo...what new apps have you installed in the last Month ? ?Thanks for following this up. There are actually two Norwegian users sharing this laptop. I am the Administrator, and discovered this weird happening by coincidence while starting the laptop remotely. I do not know when this might have been installed or infected.

The newest software installed or updated:

2013-10-15:

  • Adobe Reader XI - Norsk ( 11.0.05 )
  • Skype ( 6.9.106 )
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy ( 2.1.21 )

  • Garmin USB Drivers ( 2.3.0.0 )
  • Windows Driver Package - Garmin Devices ( 06/03/2009 2.3.0.0 )
Garmin is a G logo...Skype is an S logo so it's neither of those...
You may want to search back further.

It's not any of the others listed. The older ones are really old, from 2012, and I do not think that this strange behavior is that old. I am afraid that this might be something suspicious and maybe meant to be hidden, hence I will not find it the ordinary way. That logo belongs to Western Digital, a hard drive manufacturer. Wow! I've never seen a URL this long but I tested it and when you click on it it goes to the page I was looking at when I copied the URL.Thank you!

Good to know that this is not a hacker or VIRUS related issue.

And also, by the way, I concluded, tested and learned that it is actually possible to search directly for an image/photo with Google! I didn’t know that. This made me wonder about all the things that might have been uploaded since the beginning of this feature.

Thanks again! Great job! Solved!

Solve : why are data files showing??

Answer»

When I hit the start BUTTON and do a search for example a music video file I see a lot of "data" LISTINGS. There is nothing in data that I can use (although of course 'data' is necessary) and it complicates and clutters the screen. I don't think it used to be that way like a couple years ago. Is this something I somehow enabled in my view or is it a feature of Vista or Win7 or...? Is there a way to block seeing these files? I see them on my SMART phone too and with that small screen it's even more of a nusiance.Have you tried using the Windows Explorer Search bar? I don't get the best or REFINE search when using the Search Programs and Files box. Usually use the start box search for exe files or programs not pinned on taskbar or on DESKTOP.

Solve : Multiple issues Win 7?

Answer»

Hi all - I am having a series of issues with my desktop computer. First the specs:
Dell Dimension 435T
i7 CPU, [emailprotected]
12GB RAM
1TB Hard drive
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit
BitDefender Security Package/
Installed software: Office 2010; Photoshop 6; Lightroom 5;

The issues: the system slows down erratically without identifiable pattern. [Regardless of what AP I'm using or what else may be running]
The system FREEZES and the little blue whirly thingie [gotta love the tech terms, huh?] goes around and the screen grays for a few seconds or for many minutes. I can sometimes wait it out, but other times I have to reboot in order to resume
I can often type faster than the system can respond
I often have to click on an icon multiple times to get the system to respond
Often I cannot open an application at all and must reboot in order to get that application to open
If I try to switch from one ap to another using the tabs, the screen grays and the spinning orb goes around and around for up to several minutes

What I have tried: defraging the drive; running Malwarebytes to identify and remove any malware (It found nothing); running Dell diagnostics - which hung and never completed after multiple tries.

If I've left any important information out, please let me know. I am not an expert. Thank you for any help

Do you have an anti virus app installed? If so, did you run a full scan with it?Yes, I have BitDefender and Malwarebytes. I have run both (multiple times) and they have found no errors, virus or malware. What are your system temps like ? ?Umm - sorry, but I don't understand the question. Are you asking if the computer is running hot, as in the fan isn't doing an adequate job? Or are you asking if the temp file is too full or large? If it's the physical temperature of the system, then the answer is cool. There are two on-board fans and the CPU is cool to touch. The area around the power board [I'm probably not using the right term. What I mean is where the plug enters] is cool to touch. This power center sits above the inputs for USB enabled devices, the audio PORT and ethernet ports. All are cool to touch. I'm not sure where else to check operating temperature. [Presuming this is what you mean] As for temp files, that folder is EMPTY. In my work, I do a lot of uploads and downloads often of large GRAPHIC files. Therefore, I usually clear my temp files and download files once a day. If I'm COMPLETELY misunderstanding your question, please explain what you are asking. Thanks! Sorry i was unclear...i meant temperatures...
DLoad and run SpeedFan...save the readings to a txt fil...or screenshot and Post them here...Okay - here's the screen shot:

1. Run chkdsk /r from command prompt. Will require restart to run, it will ask you. If no errors then go to #2 below.
2. Could indicate a hardware problem; need to test RAM & hard drive.

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program. To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post. Hi folks and thank you for the help. It appears as if my hard drive is the culprit. I ran Check-disk and it displayed several error messages. I then ran Seagate Seatools and it too found errors and stopped the scan. I am now running Seatools-DOS in hope of making repairs to the HD. It should take about 4 hours according to Seagate, so I still don't know if I will be able to save the hard drive or if I will have to replace it - UGH. Thanks again -HDD errors pretty much cannot be fixed by any software...
Start shopping for a new hDD.
If you need suggestions on cloning ytheold to the new let us know...If there are disk errors, the cloning won't work or the clone will be corrupted. Not in all cases...i've done many successfully with failing HDD's...

Solve : Win 7 upadtes fais with 129 items?

Answer»

I also hive windows 7 32 BIT home on this Dell Inspiration E1705 notebook. This morning I USED it for awhile and went to shut it down. It said there were 129 updates needed, OK. I let it be. Later rebooted and it did some more. Later rebooted and it said the updates failed. No reason given.
Now it rems to woke alright.
Is this strange? Normal? What shall I do?129 updates are a lot, I am guessing that its been a while since this was last updated or a somewhat recent INSTALL in which all updates were never completed. As far as windows 7 goes, I did have a problem with my WIFES prior system not wanting to take SP1. Is this laptop running on SP0 or SP1? I fought with it for a few hours and gave up and backed up all data and then installed a clean install to it which fixed the issue as for even the earliest RESTORE point had whatever the corruption was to cause SP1 to crash.

Solve : Win7 64 Pro Safe Mode??

Answer»

Hi folks, I have developed an issue, I suspect GRAPHICS card, as the symptoms so far are a sort of sparkling CUBE effect on the monitor once Windows boots to the desktop, followed by a complete lock-up of the mouse, keyboard, etc just a couple seconds later. The only way out is the reset button of course. The sparkling effect seems to be getting worse every time I attempt a boot and actually the last time I tried I got a black SCREEN instead of the desktop. As of right now I can boot in safe mode only. I'm running slightly overclocked (4.4) through the gigabyte "turbo boost thingy" just to be on the level, but the thing is this machine has been running this way for 2 1/2 yrs now almost 24/7 without a glitch. I don't think it's a heat issue as I've blown everything out (regularly but also) since the problem developed last evening.

PC is self- built:
i7-2600K, h2o cooling
GA-Z68XP-UD3
EVGA GTX-580
8Gb DDR3 1866
256Gb Crucial M4 SSD (x2)
1 Tb WD Caviar
27" LED Monitor

I have Windows installed on one of the SSDs (C:) along with most of my programs, and most of my work folders are on the 2nd SSD (D:) and consist of a lot of PhotoShop, gmax, and geotif type FILES related to flight sim development. The WD conventional hard disk is a backup basically of my work folders and FS related downloads.

My immediate concern is that I can't see the 1 Tb WD Caviar hard drive in Windows Explorer and I don't know if that's due to running in safe mode or if the drive has possibly shelled out and may be actually the cause of the problem.

I guess that is my question, is the absence of this drive normal in safe mode or is it likely related to or causing the problem?

Thanks much,
JimMissing a drive in safe mode isn't normal, is it shown in device manager or disk management?
Try booting to normal mode without the drive attached just to eliminate it, but I suspect the graphics card is at fault here. However, it's also worth resetting to defaults to remove the overclock to eliminate that as the fault, too. Thanks for your reply Calum

Yes after collecting my thoughts a bit it certainly doesn't make SENSE that I'd be seeing the SSD on drive D: but not the conventional HDD on E: in safe mode. If safe mode were to disable drives it seems it would disable all but the Windows drive, plus data recovery would likely be a primary concern in safe mode so it makes no sense at all that safe mode would disable drives period. The drive does not show up in the device manager incidentally and my CD ROM/DVD drive is now showing up as E: This board has an onboard caching SSD that is tied in with the conventional HDD through "Intel rapid storage technology" which I believe runs on startup, so that may be a possible explanation why the drive has gone AWOL in safe mode?

I may have gone "henny penny" a bit on this thread, lol. I will try unplugging the drive and resetting defaults and see what happens. ATM I'm tying up some loose ends on the net and double checking some backups while I've got it running so I'll attempt some rational troubleshooting tomorrow and report back.

Thanks,
JimWell, moving the monitor over to the 2nd plug on the vid card has allowed me to boot normally, the conventional HDD is now showing up as D: again, all data seems to be intact (whew). Where do I go from here? Am I good to go at this point, or from your experience is it just a matter of time until the other side blows too?

JimGood to hear things seem normal on the other output. See how you go, one output failing isn't always indicative of a pending failure of the card but if it's still in warranty I would want to get it replaced anyway. No it's long past warranty I'm afraid, but so far so good nonetheless. I "stress tested" it running FSX flat out for half an hour or so last evening without a glitch and everything seems normal. If it packs in this afternoon I don't really feel like it owes me anything because it really has been a great card and it's had a fair amount of heavy use. What I hate most is when something goes wrong like this and you can't figure out which component to replace, at least in this case it should be fairly safe to say "vid card" which is a huge relief. Good excuse for an upgrade anyway, no?

Thanks again for your input, it's much appreciated

JimAh, figured with it being EVGA you might have the 5/10/lifetime warranty

Sounds like it should be OK at least for now anyway, probably just an output gone bad rather than the card.

Solve : Win7 has inconsistant boot issues partition errors?

Answer»

Hi folks
I just put in a new ICYDock 5.25" hot swap Drive Caddy for 2.5 and 3.5 SSD or Hard Drive.
I'm running windows 7 64

Mainboard is p9x79 deluxe
i73820
SSD samsung 256 gig (Op system) Drive
Raptor SATA11 150 Gig (disk image) drive

Problem:
When I start my computer it keeps saying there is no boot device.
Thing that makes this strange is that If I put the system repair disk in DVD drive and do a fix.
I reboot and it still shows up as no boot device. I then put the disk image (on HD disk) in and
system repair disk in.
It boots from my SSD no problem. I can then run everything perfectly.
The Sistem image HD (Raptor SATA11) is in the same drive caddy as the Samsung SSD SATA111 with the op sys on it.
Both SATA cables from the Drive caddy got to the internal SATA ports. one to the SATA2 the other SATA3
Any Help would be appricated
TIA

Sorry folks
I'm just adding on to my first post.
I can't find a place to edit it. so here I go.

I read that if i could change my boot.ini
so I will boot straight from the C: drive not including the image drive
It should work ok. I don't know this for sure.
could someone suggest the changes I would have to make?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]WELL it just started working again I have no idea why I have done nothing to it. I shut it down took DRIVES out. like before then booted it. instead of no boot device found windows starts like nothing ever happened. Your posts are very interesting.

Here are my personal comments based only on my own experience and nothing theoretical from a textbook.

Drive caddies tend to lower the reliability and/or data speed of a drive system.
You get better performance using direct cable connection.
The more physical connectors you have, the lower the reliability.

Hope this helps.

Bottom line is having a bootable HDD in either an external enclosure and/or a dock will always produce funky results...
The SSD ultimately should be mounted internally and never see a Dock...

Bill Gates did NOT want any Win OS SINCE Win2K to be bootable from any external device...the reasons are obvious. Not sayin it can't be done but we don't do that here...

Install the SSD properly and your issues will most LIKELY go away.I do agree with you Geek-9pm any kind of change (additional device) in connection will cause issues data loss etc.
I have been running my system on two esatas for about a year now. (no problems)
The reason I do this is I like to switch up op systems.
Having a HD drive connected to the computer internally caused problems because
the different op system would put things on my backup drive that would conflict with other systems.
The only way I can think of was to put all drives in external access devices. (beats opening my case every day or so) i'm really not to concerned about speed. I do like to work with different op systems though. I have 4 backup drives one for each system.
i swap them out according to what drive I'm using.
I don't need a lot of space since I don't download movies Mp3's etc.
It's a quick simple easy way to use my system.
Also if you check out the iCY Dock, it is basically an internal drive but you don't have unhook the cables
It's like instead of reaching in and taking the cables off the HD you just have to pull it out. Not like my eSATA drives at all.

Back to the problem: I found that for some reason WIN7 put a MBR on my second drive and without it hooked up it will not boot. So I have to have two drives on in order to boot properly.
I guess it's not a big deal but I'm just interested in a way to fix it. I'm kinda pickin your brains so to speek. can't seem to find the same issue exactly. Most are because of using two op systems.

sorry about being so long winded. I won't do it again.

Solve : Computer Boot Issue?

Hello all,

I had a problem this morning when starting up my computer. I shut it down last night and did some windows UPDATES and when I turned it on today it showed me the screen on the picture that I attached. PRESSING escape within 5 seconds did not escape that menu and only allowed me to enter commands that I don't think helped me. I was able to enter exit but windows would still not boot. Like I said I don't think I CHANGED anything and didn't have any issues until shutting down last night and a couple of windows updates INSTALLED.

Solve : HELP PLEASE IE 10 took over IE 7 Windows &?

Answer»

Hello. I was trying to remove a sweetpacks search from my system; advise on the web: tools, advanced, reset. After rebooting my system, I now have IE 10 whereas had IE 7. 10 is saying not compatable to my printer; have lost all upper tabs like my favorites, search, etc. Any quick help would ben appreciated. Can I remove IE10 and get back to 7? I can't seem to find the specific program in my list of programs to MAYBE uninstall 10. Try this: CONTROL Panel, Programs and Features window, on the left is Installed Updates, scroll down to the Microsoft section, and find "Windows Internet Explorer 10". if you CLICK the Name column heading, they will be sorted by name and W will be near the bottom. Right click and choose Uninstall. After it has FINISHED, restart computer. You should then have your previous Internet Explorer.

To prevent it returning at the next update, set Windows Update to Manual:

Control Panel, Windows Update, on the left side, click Change Settings, under Important Updates, click the drop down and MAKE sure it shows "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" then click OK. When you next get a set of Windows updates, uncheck IE10.

Solve : Printing two separate, single sheet docs on front and back of page?

Answer»

I have a Canon D420 printer which is capable of printing on both sides of the paper. It will print side 1, spit it partially out then suck it back in to print side 2. Is there any way to get both documents to print on one sheet without manually feeding the 1st printout back into the printer so it can print the 2ND doc? I have looked at all possible settings on the printer and can see no solution, therefore, is there a way to do it with a script of some type? I have no knowledge of scripts.

TIA,
DeuxdadEither nit is or is not a two-sided printer.
Wht is your question?
If it is a two-sided printer, it works as you expect.
You should not have to do anything other the load the paper tray with about 50 sheets of paper.
Two(2).... Separate.... One(1) page.... Documents.... Join the documents.
If the documents are RTF, you can use Word pad.
Use print prevue to help you adjust the line breaks in the first page.
My apologies to everyone. I thought I could simplify the problem by stating it the way I did but that seems to be causing the confusion I hoped to avoid. Here's the actual problem: I subscribe to a service which provides me with crossword puzzles. Once the crossword puzzle is displayed, I have the option to print it, unsolved, on my printer. If I choose that option it will print a copy of the unsolved puzzle. There's another option onscreen to print the solved puzzle which will print the puzzle with all the letters filled in. I like to print about a month's worth of puzzles but it's somewhat time-consuming because I have to first print the unsolved puzzle, take the printout out of the printer and put it back on top of the stack of fresh paper. That way when I choose to print the solved puzzle, the unsolved printout will be on the other side of the printout.

I need some way to make the printer think it's a two-page print job so it will print both print options (unsolved and solved) on one sheet of paper without me having to re-insert the first printout back into the printer.

Hope that's a little clearer. Again, TIA.Can you download the puzzle and answer files to your computer for printing out later? (E.g. by right clicking a link and choosing Save as... or by going to the File menu of the browser and doing that?) If so, you could (assuming no other method is proposed) try something like this:

Put all the puzzle and answer files in the same folder. Using Windows Explorer...

Easiest if you choose Details or List view, maybe?

Rename or prefix the names of the puzzle and answer document files so they sort puzzle-answer-puzzle-answer e.g.

01 Puzzle 1.doc (or pdf or whatever)
02 Answers 1.doc
03 Puzzle 2.doc
04 Answers 2.doc
05 Puzzle 3.doc
06 Answers 3.doc
(etc)

Sort the files by name so they appear as above.

Hold down the Ctrl key and click each odd numbered file (starting 01, 03, 05 etc) in TURN to highlight all the "puzzle" files. Right click any one of them and select "Print". When they are all done take the whole stack out of the printer and compose the stack so that the back of puzzle 1 is on top, followed by the back of puzzle 2, etc. Put the whole lot back in the paper input tray the right way around and now highlight all the even numbered files (starting 02, 04, 06 etc - the answers) and again right click any one and select "print". At least this way you are not having to reverse each sheet at the time of printing it.

Or if you have to do it from the browser you could print out a stack of puzzles and then turn them over and go back and print the answers to those puzzles in order

Thanks Salmon,

That would work. I have a pseudo-printer (software) which creates a .PDF of anything printable. I could pseudo-print all the unsolved puzzles and then all the solved puzzles. I also have a utility called PDFSAM (PDF Split And Merge) which would gather all solved and unsolved puzzles into one big PDF which could then be printed on the Canon as you suggested. But somehow that seems like a lotta work. The more I think about this the more I think that there's no way to do this other than what you've suggested because really, I need a way to fool the printer into thinking it's going to print a two-page document for each puzzle. (sigh). The program the OP has can be run as a batch process.
In this link SOMEBODY is using it in a batch file.
http://www.pdfsam.org/bbforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1456
Can you concat multiple times from the same batch file?

So there may be some way to do it.
It becomes awkward because every request to print to PDF defaults to the same filename. I would have to rename the PDF each time I requested a print, keeping track of which printout I was requesting. In other words, the PDF pseudo-printer generates the filename "FLASH.PDF" each time I tell it to print a puzzle, solved or unsolved. Therefore I would have to change the filename to something different for each puzzle, solved or unsolved before I allowed it to generate the PDF.

This is getting waaay too CONVOLUTED simply to relieve me of having to manually re-insert a piece of paper into the printer's supply tray for each puzzle.

But I do appreciate very much all the suggestions.

Thank you. I will keep checking this thread for a while in case ANYONE comes up with a ridiculously simple way of doing this. I think one of the PDF printers auto increments the file names. So if y0ou entery TODAY.PDF as the name of the file, it will increment the name for following files.
TODAY.PDF <<-- the first one
TODAY.PDF(1) <<-- The next one
TODAY.PDF(2) <<-- The third one
Here is a list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_virtual_printer_software
Hope this is of some help.

Thank you Geek. The link you provided led me to PDF Creator which does exactly what I need it to do. I temporarily set PDF Creator as my default printer and then print the first unsolved puzzle. At that point I can tell PDF Creator to go "on hold" until I print the rest of the unsolved and solved puzzles. After they're all "printed" I tell PDF Creator to combine all the separate puzzles into one PDF file. Once that's created I just send the file to my Canon printer which proceeds to print the first unsolved puzzle on one side of the paper and the solved puzzle on the obverse. It continues that way until the entire PDF file is printed. I end up with a month's worth of puzzles with the unsolved puzzles on one side of the paper and the solved puzzles on the other. Glad you got it to work.

Solve : Cant store desktop items?

Answer» HEY,
Im running windows 7 and recently i haven't been able to move items on the desktop into folders on the desktop. I can still move stuff AROUND, i just cant store things into folders. I have been getting a message about missing a specific .dll file but i did a system restore and now i get another message when i TRY to open up a few different things. still cant move things on the desktop into folders.

I could really use some help, just don't want to re-install windows. will if i have to though.

The new message is the procedure entry point @eleaseSRWLockShared could not be LOCATED in the dynamic library KERNEL32.dllThis message is because there are still missing system files. A repair Installation of the OS is needed. This is not a re-install in which you will LOSE all data. Windows 7 Repair Install will keep all personal data but will correct for system files missing or corrupt.okay thank you

Solve : Incorrect Password, when I know it's correct??

Answer»

My brother is having an issue. His laptop won't ACCEPT his password anymore. He hasn't changed it, noone has, and he knows hes typing it in the right way. It just won't work. I had this issue long before, but I don't remember what I had to do to fix it. I'm 100% we're using the right info, but we just get denied.

Win7.http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/reset-password-windows-7.htm

Other things... a faulty keyboard? If your brother has not got a Windows install disk, then he could take it to a repair store, along with proof of legal ownership, and they could probably do a password reset for him.
His keyboard is alright. Any other options than taking it to a PC store? Spending money is not a priority, nor do we think we have proof of ownership (it has been passed around a few times). We know 100% that it is not a mistake on our part, we've tried countless times, variations. The issue is for sure not us.

We're still trying to find the disc and drive due to the lack of an actual drive on his laptop.

Are there any other solutions? Surely theres got to be an EASY way to fix this issue, password reset is a common necessity, especially considering at the moment, it's Windows' fault the password isn't working.Quote from: WillNeedsHelpFast on November 26, 2013, 06:28:18 PM

I disagree. When you decide to use a hard password, the decision is yours. Also, Windows allows you to have other user accounts. Normally none would set up another account to allow for the possibility of a strange error. It is like having two doors on your house.
If your brother is a disabled person, there are some places that will give free help with computer issues.
Because of the INCREASE in computer theft, better security systems are coming on the market. Of course, older computers are easier to hack, but they are LESS attractive to the marketplace trade. Some new laptops require special tools to reset the password. You can ask you local police department if you have one of those. They are up to date on the issues.A password is designed to protect, it doesn't make it his fault for choosing to do the smart thing and protect himself, but it does make it Windows' fault for not having better countermeasures in place for this common occurence (password loss). But I digress, we could TALK all day about good decisions and the changing technological world.

Haha.

I'll give a few of these a shot with some other stuff I've found tomorrow at Thanksgiving, maybe we'll get this resolved easily. Else he might just have to bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop.I have seen this problem in my friends computer. His keyboard wasn't typing correctly. Means when he presses 'A' then OS displays some other character on screen. And this problem was with all buttons of keyboard. Formatting OS will not help (If keyboard is faulty).

He did this to solve : He connected an external USB keyboard and used it to do typing.

If you don't have external keyboard then click on lower left icon on LogIn display when Window asks for password for User.
Then select "Type without keyboard" and use that keyboard to type your password.

If this isn't working then i am sure that somehow your password has been changed. And you will need to format your OS or use any other applications to crack password (I am not going to describe these S/W due to Forum's rules).

Solve : fix for blue screen on windows 7?

Answer»

Hi i have a sony vaio laptop, it now has the blue screen of death. i tried to get up the bios menu by pressing f2 now it has a black screen with white lines.is there any way to fix this ALSO i brought a CD that claims to get rid of this problem, it says i need to change the bios to boot from CD, so again i tried to get the bios menu up but nothing happened. is there any way of getting the laptop to boot from CD without using the bios menu.Quote

now it has a black screen with white lines
The main problem should have to be a hardware problem on the onboard gpu chip. If these always occurs on initial boot-up, then a reinstall is merely impossible at this point.thank you and even though there is no screen on the laptop, it doesnt change colour or work at all. could i just install windows again and it will work or is it better to just buy a new one I bought windows 7 not too long AGO, but my laptop now has the blue screen of death and I cannot run windows. I have got a backup CD, of all the folders and files that I found in my hardrive under a folder called windows. On this CD it contains a lot of folders and a lot of files. So does any know what files I would need to re install windows on the same laptop that I brought it with. Or is there any other way of re installing the windows that I brought if so how would i do this Please don't start new threads for existing topics. I've MERGED the two together. No BIOS screen is a bigger problem which reinstall of Windows will not fix. Your so-called "backup CD" is worthless. Programs (apps) must be installed not copied from folders.

Did the Vaio laptop come with Win7?
i lost my windows 7 on my laptop because of a system crash. ive tried re installing windows 7 but nothing has worked because i don't have a bios menu where i can chose to boot from CD ive tried every key combination possible but still nothing . to add to this the screen is always blue of some FORM, sometimes its block colour and then other times there are lost of horizontal lines across the screen. how would i be able to fix this because the screen is well non -existent. would be very grateful if someone could help.PLEASE stop creating new threads.

When you first boot is the screen readable at all? If not, you need to have it repaired. If it is, when the system first starts look for a message that says "To enter bios (or setup) press ? (it will tell you the correct key). If you don't see that message, try pressing the F1 key or F2 key or F3 key (try each on successive boots - one of them should work).

Solve : notices that slide in on righthand lower corner?

Answer»

I have many notices that slide out from the righthand lower corner of the screen telling me to do updates and a couple that are ads.
How do I remove these? Thank youWhich pop up that you see as ads? This can be a simple program you are running telling you there are updates such as Adobe or Java update etc or something as annoying at HP Printer MANAGER popping up suggesting going to their web store to buy INK since your at 33% etc.Or he's infected...
What protection apps do you have ? ?If you are sure that those PROGRAMS are Ads or other UNNECESSARY you can do following steps :
1. Right click the icon of program you want to exit
Select Exit button.
OR
Right click Task BAR->Task Manager->PROCESSES
Select the name of program and select "End Process"

2. If you want to keep the program running and want to disable its update
Right click icon->Select Properties/Setting
Find Update, and disable automatic update.

3. To remove permanent :
Uninstall that program from Control Panel
OR
Start->type "msconfig"(for 7 or 8. Alternate : Run->type "msconfig")
Go to Services tab and disable the specific program to load (Avoid disabling Window's programs)

I'm having problems with my laptop as every single time I switch it off it starts doing UPDATES...and it seems like they are the same ones? Does anyone know why this is happening? You have to remember to do this though, but in my book, it's less annoying.Just a heads up...run updates overnite...on A/C power...low battery may be interrupting them and not allowing them to complete. It's not that...I've checked and there are some updates that are failing over and over. It's a NET .4 FRAMEWORK error...It says it's failing to initialize, anyone know what that means? I've had the laptop for some time now, so I don't understand why this is happening now, I haven't done anything to the laptop. Could you tell me how to do that please? Thanks. What updates are you trying to install?

If these updates are windows updates, do them manually. When you start up the windows update page, under settings, choose NEVER. Windows won't like this though.Net .4 Framework updates? I think I'm gonna have to get in touch with the manufacturer because the laptop won't do them and I think somehow something got wiped from the hardware and now the laptop won't work like it should. It sounds like you're doing windows updates. Try this
Do one update at a time on AC power with your battery plugged in. If for some reason, that one update fails then you'll get an error code and you can try to reset the windows update wizard. Microsoft has a tool that you can use to do this.

Every update has a kb number so it would help if you could mention exactly which updates are failing.Quote from: patio on November 04, 2013, 06:04:58 PM

Follow "gameperson's" instructions if you want to disable Windows automatic updates. You can also select it for manual update.

More detail steps (For Win 7, if you are USING other Window then following steps may differ) :
1. Start->Control Panel->System and Security
2. Find Window Update and select "Turn automatic update on or off"
3. And then do what you need.

To disable Right hand side Flag messages
Control Panel->Action Center and do what you need.

Solve : Computer suddenly boots in safe-mode-esque [SOLVED]?

Answer»

--- Somehow my startup selection in msconfig was switched to selective, switching to normal fixed EVERYTHING. Case closed. ---

This morning my computer booted abnormally fast, LIKE 3 or 4 times as fast as normal. The window style is the classic windows 98 look, the sidebar is bright white with only a couple gadgets, most external devices (speakers, ethernet, webcam) won't connect. Every single startup service in msconfig has been enabled for some reason. In my System window, processor and memory are listed as "not available". In fact, many things just don't seem to work or are not available. Running sfc /scannow just told me it couldn't start.

It feels like safe mode but it isn't. Resolution is correct on both monitors, but there is no OPTION for aero. Last time I used the computer all I did was enable a logitech startup service for my keyboard, install python, and run some python scripts.

Windows Vista 64 SP2, 4gb memory, radeon 4850, Intel Q6600 2.4 GHz. Six year old computer with no hardware upgrades. I tried a system restore but that only gives an error that system restore isn't FUNCTIONING. Malwarebytes says I'm clean.

Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. Which Logitech startup service ? ?

Are there other services you have dis-abled recently also ? ?

Solve : formatted windows laptop need help getting files can it be done??

Answer» GOOD morning,
I recently had an ISSUE where my computer wouldn't GET online, so I called the manufacturer. While troubleshooting I was advised to format the hard drive once informed that I would loose my files I cut off the computer during the process. I now receive an error message during start up that windows failed to start due to corrupt files. Are my files lost is there any way to retrieve them?Sadly you may be outta LUCK...
One thing you can try is remove the drive...connect it in an external HDD enclosure to a working desktop PC and see what data if any is left...
If that fails then a data recovery service (expensive) is your only other Option.

Solve : Startup Menu?

Answer»

I was told that I had too many programs starting up at one time. How do I know which programs are starting up when I turn on my computer? I hope I am explaining this correctly.Who told you this?

Generally this isnt a problem unless you have a slow or older computer that is causing long startup times before its loaded all services etc. Once the system if up and running you can look at the services on the task bar near the clock and figure out what ICON is what and determine which ones you WANT to get rid of.

You then can either delete specific software that you do not want that is related to a service that starts or go in and configure it to not be automatic start, but instead manual start so that your computer boots to desktop faster WITHOUT having to wait so long.

Also you can scan your system with MALWAREBYTES to get rid of malware that wants to load services etc if you havent already.

What is the make/model of the computer or if custom built the specs to look over and maybe suggest an upgrade that can help if your bottlenecked hardware wise? Are you experiencing any specific problems with your system?Go to Start menu > Type " msconfig " in search box then Enter.
Go to " Startup Tab ".
There are all programs that run in startup of windows. check which ones you want to start when windows starts and unchecked which ones you won't.
DO NOT follow the instructions in the POST above. MSCONFIG is a diagnostic utility and should not be used to make permanent changes to startup items.Agreed.

I can't fix it by logging in and installing the new driver from the site
I can't fix it using safe mode
are their any other options?
or is it time to say goodbye to this OLD laptop...Download the driver using a different computer, copy it to your computer, installDo I have to uninstall it first? Do I upload it in safe mode?Given your current circumstances, don't worry about uninstalling anything. And yes, try to install it in safe mode - hopefully that will work (though not all drivers can be installed in safe mode)ok this is weird

I was at my aunts house when I started this post now I'm back home and browsing the WEB like nothings wrong??? I figured since I have WiFi now I wont have to use another computer or do it in safe mode. So, I went to the device manager and DECIDED to test it out by updating the driver and now its telling me its up to date...
I did the same thing to the virtual WiFi miniport adapter and it tells me "windows cant verify the publisher of this driver software"

Could this be the problem?DO NOT update the driver via device manager. Do it as I suggested - get the driver from the website of the adapter's manufacturer. And make sure you disable driver updating in Windows Update. What site is it exactly? How do I know if I'm downloading from the right website?Quote from: Allan on September 27, 2013, 11:15:36 AM

Solve : YouTube videos freeze/buffer/stop All browsers?

Answer»

Just a small issue I have been having.

When watching videos on youtube, the video will stop for a few moments every few minutes, as if I had hit "Pause" or as if it were buffering, but the buffering symbol never appears.

My connection speed is pretty good - 20 down, 2 up.

Does the same in Firefox, Chrome, IE, and Opera.

Does NOT happen on my laptop - only my desktop (same internet connection) so I am sure it is something to do with my desktop (i.e fixable).

Temps are good (under 40C for everything).

Does the freezing irregardless of quality setting (i.e. 240 or 1080, all freeze the same amount).

I tried that YouTube HTML5 player with no change.

Time of day has no effect (happens just as often at Tuesday at 1:00 as at Saturday at 17:00)

I did a lot of googling but couldn't seem to find anything that worked at all (disabling hardware acceleration, enabling hardware acceleration, upgrading/downgrading Flash, USING different browser, upgrading/downgrading my video card driver, and messing with quality settings, waiting for it to buffer, etc.) Nothing made it better or worse.

An interesting note - When I used to leave a youtube video open but not playing, it used to buffer all the way to the end - but now, they just buffer a few seconds ahead as I am playing it. And yet, it doesn't pause at "unbuffered" parts - it seems as though the video loaded but isn't playing.

If it didn't work on my laptop, I would say it was youtube...but on my laptop, videos play smooth - no freezing.

Thanks for any assistance! My thoughts are ... outdated Flash Plugin maybe .... or issue with Network Adapter which has a hickup to it.

Had a client once with nVidia nForce integrated NIC that acted up and caused similar issues. The solution was to do away with using the integrated nForce NIC since driver update didnt resolve this, and install a $10 Dynex PCI network adapter off the shelf from bestbuy and use this as the main connection instead.

His issue MAINLY showed up when running a persistent ping to say www.google.com, almost like perfect timing the NIC would drop out for about a half second and oddly online games were able to reestablish a connection and not drop him as a disconnect, but streaming music/audio and video would stop and start back up again just like this pause like delay condition you have.

So I would open up command shell and enter ping www.google.com -t and watch for DROPPED ping responses. If the connection never drops then your NIC and network connection tot he internet is healthy, but if you get an occasional lost ping response then I would check into the NIC. *Also look for latency spikes in the ms response times, if you have latency in excess of 200ms your streaming content can act up. I nromally get between 15 and 60ms latency with www.google.com pings when no one is using bandwidth in home. If you have someone sucking up bandwidth and you ping, the pings will be latent competing for bandwidth.Hiccup...Quote

Hiccup...

Oops ... Typo in spelling, as WELL as other typing typos when rereading now Hello David,

My flash plugin is totally up to date.

I also tried pinging google.com (even youtube.com when I was having freezing issues) but nope, no lost pings...only myself in the house and I usually have a latency of 10-15 ms.

Also, I hook up directly to my router (it is not a wireless router).

I found a way around it even if it is a bit odd - I can use VLC to watch the video, 720 no lag. Not sure why it loads through VLCs media streaming faster than through YouTube but whatever.

I have a GeForce card actually, and it doesn't have a network interface (that I know of).

Just a small thing that has been bugging me.

A lot of PEOPLE are saying youtube has switched over to a DASH loading system (?) basically saying that it will only load a few seconds ahead while playing...but even so, my computer/connection is good enough on my laptop for it to load without pauses, so why is my (more powerful) desktop, on the same connection, having trouble? A big headscratcher for me.Can you watch www.crackle.com, www.netflix.com, or www.hulu.com without the same problem showing up? Crackle is free, Hulu has some free stuff, and Netflix is only playable if you have account active with them. Just want to see if we can isolate this to specifically only youtube or if its all streaming.

The VLC option is used in conjunction with YTD right? If so its playing it locally vs off of a web stream through the normal flash player.

Also the nVidia NIC would only be if you had the nForce chipset on the motherboard which you do not have. Video Cards very rarely have Network Adapters built in. The only examples of a Combo Network/ Video Card I have seen is in older high end HP servers etc which had VGA Video and Dual NIC on a single card on an old Dual CPU Pentium III 1.13Ghz Compaq ML350 as seen here that I use to support which was the main server for a food store chain: http://213.175.108.87/compaq_proliant_ml350g2.pdfGood call on other streaming sites.

I don't have a netflix account, but hulu and crackle play fine. (I like Crackle too!) I also watch anime from Crunchyroll without any issues.

And no, I am not using YTD (youtube downloader, right?) I am using the "Media Streaming" option on VLC to play a video from the web (Media > Open Network Stream, enter the URL, and it plays).

It seems it is specific to youtube, except, (like I said before) it doesn't freeze on my laptop.

Something I have tried now is the browser extension "Youtube center" and disabling DASH playback - and it streams fine now. So at this point it is solved.

Thanks!

Desktop or Laptop ? ?
Either way what are your system temps ? ?I am guessing this is due to over heating of system or Graphics(VGA) PROBLEM.
Try cleaning your system fan(s). If problem continues then it is due to VGA.
Try reinstalling LATEST drivers for your graphics or install a new graphics card in your system.

Specify your system configurations for more suggestions.

Solve : Cant reapir or install windows?

Answer»

i have laptop Dell N5110 core i3 (Window 7)
2 days back it just shutdown while i was using it.when i started it again it give a black screen with option

restart system
insert window cd
Click repair

i inserted window cd and reached option of repair but even after 8 hours the screen was same bluish showing "attempting repair it might take over an hour"
i also tried to install new window but the system held on screen showing "STARTING setup" for hours.

i am in a remote oil field and no repair shop are available. Please give some suggestion to resolve my laptop problem. Was it dropped ? ?...if so remove and re-seat both the HDD and DVD-ROM with all power removed and battery out.

What exactly does it say on this WinCD and is it the one that shipped with the PC ? ?

P.S. Any repair / re-install of an OS on a laptop should be done with A/C power...never do it on battery power unless you want HEADACHES...If what Patio says does not resolve the issue, your are stuck.
You have done as much as you can in a remote area.

Have somebody ship you a replacement laptop. And get a external USB device to read data off your old HARD drive. That requires you to remove the hard drive from the laptop.

Here is one kind of adapter from Amazon. Other vendors also have things like that.

The pix above shows it on a desktop drive. Also works on laptop drives.

That is the best I can say.
It was not dropped.Just shutted down while i was using it.
On wincd if i click install window it helds on screen for hours saying"Starting setup"
On wincd if i click repair it helds on screen for hours saying "Attempting repair"Please answer the questions above...they mean something.(1)it was not dropped
(2)On wincd it just held on attached screens for several hours while repairing and new OS installation
(3) it was not shipped with PC
(4) I had tried OS installation with AC Adapter PLUGGED in Laptop

What else you want to ask?

Solve : Windows failed to start....?

Answer»

Acer Laptop Win7. My son's COMPUTER. Trying to reinstall OS. Ordered recovery discs because he didn't create one for himself before the VIRUS. Laptop has no CD drive. formatted USB, put the three discs onto a USB. Recovery process started until the message, Please insert DISC 2. Pulled USB out, found a usb external cd player, plugged it in, message, "boot manager missing". Back to flash drive, "Windows FAILED to start, etc". Now, no matter what I do, same message, "Windows failed to start". How do I get past that screen to fix this thing? Please provide some more detail.
What is the make and model of the computer.
Is your external CD also a DVD reader?
Can you get into the BIOS? Set the BIOS to boot from external DVD drive.

On some laptops you need to remove the battery and use AC only until the system is working. Sorry, I do not know if that apples in this case. Also malware may alter even some BIOS settings. In such case you have to re remove the CMOS cell to force a return ton default settings. Replace after 30 seconds. Again, I don't know if that applies here.

Please tell more about the recovery discs. Why two discs? Who sold them to you? It ought to be the manufacture of the laptop.
Thank you for responding....the make and model of the computer is Acer Aspire 3830T. I have looked everywhere on the internet for the service manual (of course, Acer.com does not have it) but none for the 3830T. Yes, the external CD drive is a dvd reader/writer, and and yes, i did ask the BIOS to boot from the USB CD Rom. I can hear the cd start to load, but then is stopped when the message pops up, Windows failed to start, etc.
It's bizarre, too, about the external battery pack. Most laptops, you just slide the latches or open a flap on the back, but this computer does not have that. Where I THINK it is, has three screws, but is also part of the entire case, too. I would have to take the entire top off the computer in order to disconnect what I believe to be the battery pack. That's another reason I spent literally HOURS looking for a service manual for it.
I figured if push came to shove, I would have to take the battery off the motherboard to reset everything, but I can't find a service manual to guide me thru the steps to get to it. I don't want to break anything.......can you help?
The recovery discs came from Acer themselves and there are three discs plus a systems disc....
