Solve : Computer disfunctioning driving me insane?

Answer»

Quote from: Calum on October 03, 2013, 12:14:26 PM

Not sure if you're saying that jokingly or not, but an off brand (low quality) PSU can be the root cause of many issues, even if they're seemingly unrelated. Even if it appears to work fine, the voltage can easily go out of spec especially when loaded up, and this can damage hardware over TIME. They can even explode or set on fire. I'm not saying buying a KNOWN good quality unit means it will run forever and never die, but I am saying there's no point scrimping on the power supply of all things.

What do you define as a good, fair price PSU? XFX and Antec make a LOT of good quality units at reasonable prices. CORSAIR make some "OK" and some very good units, but you often pay more for the name. Seasonic make excellent units and in fact ACTUALLY make all of XFX's units, some of Antec and Corsair's, and many more, but again they tend to be priced higher. There are a lot of good units and a lot of bad ones, if you give us a rough price range we can certainly recommend a good one.

As an 18 years old facing the army soon, I make amall amounts of money.. I say I could invest around 100$ on a new PSU. Maybe a bit more.

Solve : Home screen frozen?

Answer»

Since a week ago, every time I log ONTO my laptop, the home screen is frozen and nothing on the keyboard works. I've been using safe mode and I can't figure out whats wrong.Further information is required. The OP POSTED on Windows 7 forum. He might be using Apple OS 7, not windows 7.
Hopefully he will clarify this.

If it is Windows 7 and works in safe mode, he needs to create a new user account to see if the issue is related to user profile correction. Which does happen sometimes.
Here is a general reference on this:

Fix a corrupted user profile (Microsoft)
It is a Windows 7 and I tried making a new account and it still did the the same thing. The MOUSE worked seconds after logging in but once the icons in the bottom right corner of the screen loaded, it FROZE. The num lock on the keyboard doesn't LIGHT up, the volume doesn't work and plugging anything into the usb has no affect/nothing on the screen changes. What happened prior to this ? ?
Was it dropped ? ?
Any new software/hardware changes since it worked properly ? ?

Solve : HP DV4 2170us Not Starting?

Answer»

Hello, I have an HP DV4 2170us, it is about three and a half years old, so I know it is fairly old for a laptop. Overtime its battery has completely failed, which is understandable, but now it appears as if it is at its end. Whenever I try to start it, it turns on, but nothing appears on the screen. The opening windows animation never displays, nor does the lock/logic screen, and it will simply STAY as if it were stuck between the second I push the on button and when the windows animation would show. I try to shut the computer down manually and it will, but if a I restart the same thing happens.

What can I do to fix this... or at least get data off of it? What seems to be the problem?Remove the battery 1st...and try it on A/C power only...
If that doesn't work your options for data retrieval is buy a laptop to SATA/IDE connector...about 8 Bucks...or a USB powered external HDD enclosure.Nice laptop, not too old.

Win7-64 or 32?
Can you enter Setup? Esc-key on power up.

Perform a "hard reset".
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01684768

It might actually start charging the battery.Removing the battery doesn't do anything to alter the start up. Nothing comes up on the screen at any point, it remains BLACK, even if I push esc.

Won't a hard reset get RID of my data?

It's a Win7-64. Great laptop, just battery charging troubles and now this... I know it's getting towards the end of its life, but what seems to be problem here?Quote from: Lars on October 06, 2013, 07:18:02 PM

...Won't a hard reset get rid of my data?...
No. Nothing on hard drive is altered.
Link provided says: "A hard or forced reset erases all information in the computer's MEMORY which may restore functionality. Resetting your computer forces the system to clear and reestablish the SOFTWARE connections between the BIOS and the hardware."
Memory & hard drive are 2 different things.

It worked for me on my HP laptop when the fan went 100% on power up & stayed 100%.
Just do it, can't hurt anything to try.I did the hard reset, no change. I turn the computer on and the fan and LEDs all come on, but the screen remains dark.Quote from: Lars on October 06, 2013, 07:18:02 PM

OR
2. Take it to a repair shop. Too difficult to service on your own.

Solve : Upon system resore login screen asking for username and password?

Answer»

Earlier today I tried to install a game and in ORDER to meet the requirements it asked me to install some drivers, so I did that. Then when it told me to restart my computer I did so and upon getting back to my LOGIN screen where my username with the icon should be asking for a password, it instead has no icon and now a username and a password bar awaits input. I do not understand what to put in here since I have tried my previous username and password I gave my profile when first installing windows 7. Where do I go from here? I'll be even happy just to reset my computer. I don't mind if everything is erased I didn't have much data on it anyways.

That would probably be the best. Who KNOWS what the "game" was trying to do.
1. Try "Last Known Good Configuration", F8 at the Windows splash screen will give you a list.
2. If this is not a branded computer (HP, Dell, etc.), Windows repair install.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
Is there a way I can just reset my computer WITHOUT actually accessing my computer? Because the problem is I can't even get to my desktop because it's asking for a username and password that I don't know.Oh, and I did try doing "Last Known Good Configuration" after pressing f8. It says that the current point is fine but I can still not get pass this username and password screen. It's not detecting any administrator profile. What if you give it a new user name & LEAVE the password blank?Negative. I've tried just about every combination. Even my old Username for my profile I inputed and still no result. Did you try just hitting Enter at the password prompt ? ?Yes, I've just hit enter. It then says Windows Security, username and password is incorrect.I sounds like Windows Login Hijacked By Malware .
What game were you installing?
What drivers did it ask to install?

If you're locked out of a logon, Windows repair might not work. You may have to perform a clean install.

Did you try CTL-ALT-DEL
Username: Administrator
Password: I'm gonna have to use a Hiren's BootCD
Thanks for the help though guys, very much appreciated

Solve : Installing/Renaming Fonts?

Answer»

Hi!

I have installed the English version of Windows 7 Ultimate. Whenever I TRY to install a Chinese font, it doesn't seem to show up properly. It would show up in its English code name, but not it's proper Chinese name. When I LOOK in the ttc file, it ALSO doesn't show the proper name, as I already know what its name is. Is there a solution to this? If not, is there a way for me to rename the files?

Thanks,
BrianI MAYBE wrong, I often am, but I think you have to get a dual-language vision from your supplier. The English version does not have what it needs to properly handle the extended fonts of eastern languages.
A question like this was found on a MS forum.
The user already has Chinese and wants to add English. He was told to get a special language pack for Windows 7 ultimate.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/how-do-i-change-my-windows-7-chinese-version-to-an/9a2abf50-fde3-4a6b-adf8-70fbd3b8ef0f

I hope that will help you. Sorry for my late reply. I installed the Traditional Chinese language pack, but it still doesn't seem to work.

The highlighted object is the one I'm trying to install:

As you can see, when I open the file, the name (top line) does not correspond to the actual name.

Needless to say, the font name does not appear properly in Microsoft WORD, or any other text editor.
With this being said, my other computer is Windows 7 Enterprise (English version), but the Chinese font names show up just fine. Is there a way to manually rename the fonts?

Solve : Laptop won't fully boot at home - does at Geek Squad?

Answer»

My HP laptop stopped booting all the way a few weeks ago. I press the power button, the FAN turns on and then the caps lok and num lock lights blink. I tried to troubleshoot with no success and took it to Geek Squad this weekend. When they plugged it in and turned it on, it BOOTED RIGHT away, no problems, nothing lost. They probably thought I was CRAZY. They suggested I get a new power cord as the one I have has a broken ground prong (I also do not have a battery). So I did and took it home and tried turning it on with both the old and new power cords in several different power outlets in the home, with and without a surge protector. Nothing different happened!

Why does it boot at Geek Squad, but not at home?? How can I make it boot at home??Quote

Solve : Low Disk Space?

Answer»

On my HP Pavilion laptop, I keep getting: "You are running out of disk space on HP _TOOLS (E:)." It then says: "Click here to see if you can free up space on this drive." That just gives me the option of emptying the recycle bin, which has nothing in it anyway. I have thousands of photos, so I DELETED a lot of them, but, as I expected, that didn't affect the E drive. What can I do?The Tools drive contains the Recovery PARTITION...LEAVE it as is...
IGNORE the message.HP Tools partition is separate from the HP Recovery partition. That's how mine is SET up.
Maybe System Restore is turned on for HP _TOOLS (E:)?Ahhhh...that would do it...
Thanx for the heads up.

Solve : Windows 7 Laptop Very Slow?

Answer»

Hello, my Windows 7 Asus laptop had been very very slow recently. There is lots of lags, freezes and not responding programs. It feel ike every movement I MAKE on my laptop is slow. I've tried things like Disk Cleanup, but still very slow.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks. Are you able to get into task manager and look to see if the CPU is maxed out etc? Or are you mysteriously locked out of task manager to where you may have a virus or other malware that is protecting itself by disabling task manager?

You can get to task manager via CTRL + ALT + DELETE ( or ) by entering taskmgr into the start -> search and hit enter key.

Also what is the make/model of the laptop?

If the CPU doesnt seem too busy then I'd install speedfan and run that and look at temps, as for if the CPU is roasting hot the system will throttle performance way back to try to AVOID melt down.

I also would run memtest86 on it to TEST the memory for issues.Hello Dave, thank you for the reply. I looked at the task manager, and the CPU is not high.
The model of my laptop-ASUS Notebook K53SV K53SJ Series.
I already have speedfan installed. When idle, GPU around 50 degress celcius, HD0 around 35, Temp 1, Core 1, & Core 2 around 60. When my laptop is heavy task, the temperature is quite high. When I'm gaming, the Temp 1, Core 1 & Core 2 peaks around 90 degress celcius...
I havent tried the memtest86 yet, but I will soon.
Thanks, Whitebeard190C is pretty hot, and the CPU is rated for max of 100C. I'd check into a way to get the CPU to run cooler. More airflow may be needed such as one of those cooling pads. It may be thermal throttling causing for the lag to avoid melt down. Below is a link about other people with concerns over the operating temp of this same CPU. Temps hotter than 80C for any CPU is territory I try to stay out of for fear of damage and some CPUs need to stay below 60C etc.

I'd look for a utility that detects Thermal Throttling. I had a tool I used a long time ago with Windows XP and a Pentium D 3Ghz to detect this, but cant recall the name of it. The lag may be thermal throttling.

Causes for excess heat is usually airflow ISSUE, or heatsink not rated high enough to draw the heat away, or heatsink that has failed and the tube called a heat pipe leaked out the thermal heat exchange coolant and so its no longer drawing heat away, or thermal bond between heatsink and CPU is poor or missing.

The only Core i7 reference I have IRL is my brothers Core i7 2600K system that he paid crazy money for when the Core i7 2600k came out, but its a desktop with LIQUID cooling and he is also overclocking it at like 4.2Ghz and it never climbs above 60C even when gaming for hours, and idles in the 30's C.

Solve : Add batch file to windows explorer toolbar?

Answer»

Good morning!

I have a small batch file I call "Filenames" that I can drop into a windows folder, double click, and it will create a notepad file in the same directory with the pathnames of every ".pdf" file. The code for this is pasted below

Code: [Select]@echo on

set pth = %~dp0

dir /s /b %pth%*.pdf >%pth%names.txt

end
Currently, I keep this file on my desktop and drag and drop it wherever I need it multiple times a day.

The other day I found a program called "CustomExplorerToolbar" that allows me to change the DEFAULT BUTTONS within the Windows 7 explorer toolbar (I wanted to remove "burn" and add "details pane, Paste, and Undo". That got me thinking, it would be great if I could have a button called "Filenames" in that same toolbar, and whenever I click it, it would perform its function of whatever folder I am currently in, outputting the .txt file right there. Can this be done?

Thanks in advance for the help!It can be done with C# programming and Visual Studio .Net Express edition, because one of the projects in the book was create your own browser and you can add features to your own custom browser, however I only worked through the lab project in the book and havent used it otherwise after, however I was working recently on a project in which C++ performs batch like operations and I wanted to convert it from Console App to Windows App and C# looked to be easier to achieve this, so knowing that C# can process a batched instruction and also create a custom browser, if you get the book here to learn to make your own custom browser http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Visual-2008-Express-Edition/dp/B003D3OFLG and research how to create a button to execute a batch instruction, it can be done.

While MSVS Express 2008 is slightly out of date it should still create programs that can be run on Windows 7 and 8. I was running Windows XP Pro when I was messing around with MSVS Express 2008, and am currently using 2010 with Windows 7. I would stick with 2008 if using this book though as for you will have to learn by example if new to C# programming and while 2010 will compile the program fine, you may find yourself lost between the book examples to features of this book intended for 2008 and running a different version. Personally I like C# a lot, however I mostly program in C++ and PERL for QUICK programs for personal use or quick fixes. C# is best for creating Windows applications for others to use and is a really good rapid development language.

More info here if you dont want to buy the book, however if new to C#, I would suggest this book. Its really good. I have the same books for C++ and Visual Basic. http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/csharp/csharp_s9p6.html

And this link here shows creation of buttons to add to your custom browser in which one of them can perform what you want. http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/csharp/csharp_s9p8.htmlThanks for the suggestions! I can see learning these languages being a great advantage with other tasks too.

In the meantime, does ANYONE else already know how to do this and want to help out? Bump. Anyone?Well, for anyone that cares I've found what I believe to be the next best thing to what I was originally looking for. A program called FileMenu Tools, http://www.lopesoft.com/en/filemenutools . This program lets you customize your right click menu, as well as add programs that run from any location you choose. Very neat little explorer extension and does essentially what I was looking for.

Solve : Recent Windows 7 Installation?

Answer»

Hello! This is my first ever post regarding a computer issue. I can almost always find answers to my issues from other people's posts, but in this case after several days of searching, I'm biting the bullet and submitting my own.

Thanks in advance for any and all help and advice.

First of all, my computer is a Dell XPS 400 which I purchased around 8 years ago and customized with a few different PIECES. My board is chipset i945P/G and my processor is an Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80Ghz. I am using 4x1 GB of DDR2-SDRAM at 266 MHz. For a long time the computer ran off of an 80GB SATA150 HDD (MAXTOR 6L080M0) and I used a WD (WD2500JS-08MHB0) 250 GB drive as a slave. I then obtained a Hitachi (HDS5C3020ALA632) 2 TB drive and subsequently was able to get Windows 7 for free as a student through Microsoft's DreamSpark program (good for 2 years). So I decided to install Windows 7 on the current slave drive (Western Digital - 250GB), move all my music and video files to the Hitachi 2 TB drive making that the slave, installing a system partition to the new Windows 7 drive and eliminating the relatively small 80 GB Maxtor. That turned out to be more complicated than I had anticipated, and after running the new system for a couple weeks, I have noticed two issues I need help solving:

1) The computer has short freezing spells that last between 15 and 60 seconds. This happens every 15-30 minutes and typically when I am using a browser of some kind (but not always). I initially thought maybe Windows 7 just takes that much more in the way of resources to run and my computer is getting bogged down, but I'm not sure that is the case, and I'd love to solve it. Its fair to say I multi-task and have quite a few programs running at once (Chrome, Firefox, iTunes, Excel are common). I have tried to cut each of those programs out to narrow it down with no luck. The freezing seems to happen regardless. The only times it never freezes is if I am playing a game on an emulator or something like that. It may in fact be freezing in the BACKGROUND, but I have no evidence of that.

2) The second issue has been becoming more frequent. Often times if I am away from my computer for several hours (usually over night, yesterday it happened just from being away from home for 6 hours or so), I return to see my computer at a DOS screen saying it can't find a drive in the SATA 0 spot. This is the Western Digital drive slot. I check all the cables, nothing seems to be out of order, so I reboot and it is fine. I don't even know what happens in between to get the computer to that screen, that's just how I find it.

Those are my two issues. Neither of them every occurred before switching to Windows 7. Any thoughts?

I recognize that my stuff is old and that lack of resources or old equipment could be the answer, but I don't have the money to buy anything new, so I am trying to exhaust other troubleshooting options before giving up.

-Mave

PS - Hopefully this is in the correct section!Have you tried running a hard drive test? The DOS version is much more preferred then run a Quick and Extended Test. Please post the log results by following this link. Check also thermal events and drivers/bios update just in case.In addition to what jason said, have you looked at Task Manager to see whether a particular program is gobbling CPU resources when these freezes occur?

To get a reading on temperatures in your computer, you could try http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html. How many fans do you have in your computer, besides the CPU fan and power supply fan?

How many browser tabs do you typically have open at one time? The impact of websites on CPU resources varies widely depending on Flash content, heavy use of JAVASCRIPT, etc. Jason, I have begun the process you recommend, but I'm struggling to create the DOS boot disk. Western Digital's instructions don't go into detail there. I can see there are instructions after googling it, but there are many. Is there one set you'd recommend?

Second, will this process provide me the opportunity to check the thermal events and drivers/bios or is that separate? If separate, can you point me in the direction of something to test those? I see soybean gave a link to the thermal piece, I'll run that now.

Soybean,

I have studied task manager as well as a latency test during the freezes. CPU consumption goes strangely quiet during the freezes.

In addition to the two you mention, my video card also runs a fan, but it seems to struggle. I'm not sure if it is only running as FAST as it thinks it needs to, or if it is just not working well...

As for browser windows, I typically have several open. A couple pages on espn, three different email accounts, and blazersedge.com for another. I'm sure they are heavy on flash, etc but it is no different than what I was doing while using XP.

I'll post my results of the CPUID stuff shortly. So I tried the CPUID Hardware Monitor, but it isn't all like the screenshots on the download page.

I would submit a screen shot, but I can't see how to do that. Basically it just shows my computer name with no tree structure under it. It appears to be monitoring nothing. I'm wondering if my hardware is too old as I don't think it is listed in their compatibility chart.

Frustrating that I can't get any of the help ideas on here to work.

Let's try this instead.

Download Speccy and then install the program. To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.Jason2074,

I've been away for the Holiday weekend and just now got to your suggestion.

By the way, the intermittent freezing seems to have maybe stopped. I went through a rigorous process to be sure I had all up to date drivers, and that may have solved it. However, the drive continues to fail (temporarily not read by the system).

Here are the published results: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/010lcLSy3p6tTQPGg3p6opc

It looks like heat could be the issue. Not good. I'm not sure how to solve that.

Also, it seems funny that heat would only cause a problem at night, or after long periods of inactivity. The problem has never occurred while I am sitting at the computer.

DavidBy the way, I was able to run a scheduled hard drive check disk upon the next bootup and no bad sectors were found on the drive. You have a TON of unneccessary background processes running...you need to get them under control...
I suggest Startup CPL from Mike Lin...do NOT disable anything if you don't know what it is...Post back here 1st.

NOTE: A re-boot is required after neccessary changes...and dis-abling any startup service does NOT affect the app involved from running properly.patio,

I'm really not comfortable disabling anything since I don't know much about any of them. Which section were you looking at of the report?

Solve : Sometimes Windows 7 doesn´t complete startup?

Answer»

Sometimes, WINDOWS 7 doesn´t complete start-up; the process stops at Intel DG43NB logo screen (the number 92 shows up inside a square in the lower right corner). When I press the restart BUTTON, most of the times it works, but sometimes it requires pressing that button twice. Once started. everything goes OK.

I have repaired Windows 7 and was told that something was fixed in the MBR, but fail persist. Then I run checkdisk, Western Digital Lifeguard Diagnostics (all mys disc are WD), Seatools for Windows, etc. and no problem was found.

Since I also have XP Professional installed in the same PC (a clone), I switched to XP and had no start-up problem at all.

I suspect that the Windows 7 related MBR is the guilty but I don't know what ELSE to do to fix that.Bios flash required to bug fix for hung boots of Vista or newer OS. XP runs fine, but newer OS can hang at boot or install.

There are some fixes in the newer BIOS versions for this board to prevent Vista (and presumably newer OSs) from hanging on installation so it'd be worth checking that you have the most recent BIOS version installed on this board. It's available from the Intel website downloads section for your board and make sure you follow the installation instructions in the Readme file carefully!
Thanks. I've just known that my BIOS is from 2008 (0054) and a lot of updates have been released since then. So I've decided to accept the risk of updating it using version 0107, with NBG4310H.86A.0107.EB.EXE

I'll let you know what happens.I'm now confused because my BIOS is from year 2008 and there are several updates available for it since then. Newest one is number 0107 (year 2011). See Bios rel. notes.

However, I run this detector:
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/dsktpboards

and the result was that my "Intel driver is current".

1) Are BIOS update and Intel driver two different things? As per attachment 'Drivers & BIOS' it seems there are not, but I'm not sure.

2) Does BIOS update #0107 include all previous versions updates, or should I install each one of the updates from 2008 through 2011?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I'd never do a BIOS flash to correct a Windows issue...just sayin.Patio, what I want to correct is the "FREEZE 92" issue, but I don't know it it's a BIOS's or a Windows' one.Replace your CMOS battery...Part # CR2032...available anywhere.
Do this with ALL power unplugged.Fine, Patio, I'll do it. This is something easy, inexpensive and not time consuming. Thanks a lot! Also, has it done this the whole time you've had Win 7 installed? Or is this a new issue. If it's new then it's very unlikely that it's a BIOS issue as nothing has changed there.

I totally second patio's vote for CMOS battery as a first item to check.Kyle_engineer, I installed W7 last March and keep in place XP, each in a different hard drive. The "freeze 92" failure appeared about one month, in intermittently way; It didn't show up this morning, for instance. And it happens that whenever I start from XP there's no failure at all.

There's more. Under W7, my Samsung BX2235 monitor presents two empty bands 1 cm wide each, and each SIDE of its screen if set to 75 Hertz, or only one band 2 cm wide on right side only if set to 60 Hertz. It's a non usable space that appears no matter what screen resolutions I choose. This doesn't happen under XP.

Whenever a battery had needed replacement I've been presented with an error message, but no message so far. So you havent replaced the CMOS battery yet ? ?...it will NOT notify when it's dying...as opposed to say a laptop battery...2 different things.I received a new monitor last night; installed it this morning, and the "Freeze 92" fails persisted. This evening I installed a new battery... and the "Freeze 92" fails persisted; it's alive and kicking. I have no idea what that means but congratulations.

I think you did not understand the QUESTION. When you have not hooked up the drives and turn on the machine, do you still get BLUE screen errors???Yes I still get blue screen errors when I have not hooked up the drives. If you're meaning before I even attempted to hook them up, I didn't get any errors, but I didn't really use it long enough to know for sure if I would have gotten an error or not. After removing those drives, check all connected wires etc if they are properly fit, they should not be LOSE. Especially RAM.Haven't checked so yeah I'll definitely be sure to do that tonight! Thanks

Solve : Cant boot after windows update?

Answer»

Earlier this evening, windows surprised me by restarting to preform a windows update. I went to go do something else for half hour or so, and when I came back I saw the startup repair was running.

On startup right after the windows logo come up, I get blue screen with error PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED 0x0000006B.

Same thing on safe mode and "last successful boot config."

All of my restore points failed, and startup repair fails.

Checkdisk says no problems found, and SFC finds corrupt files and repairs them every time I run it, but the blue screen still comes up.

I tried using the widows 7 recovery disk but that failed too.

I have done a LOT of reading on the subject and based on the evidence, BELIEVE this is due to corruption of ntdll.dll in system32.

There was a forum thread where it was suggested I replace this file from the same version of windows FOLLOWED by many replies from users who were able to successfully fix their issue this way. When I try to copy the clean version of ntdll.dll into my system using the recovery console, however, I the the error

The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.

I suspect this means some process is using the file or something like that. Somehow, other people were able to get it to work.

Can anyone PLEASE help me replace this file (or suggest some other CREATIVE fix for this issue).

I would really really like to avoid re-installing

Thanks..Update: This is not a hardware issue. I was able to boot the computer using an ubuntu usb stick, MOUNT the windows drives and transfer all of my important files off. Unfortunately replacing that .dll file did not fix the issue.Try running the Startup Repair again...it's possible you lost POWER or something when it ran before...
If a laptop have it on A/C for this.

Solve : Newb needing BIOS help?

Answer»

Hi
I'm trying to find out more about the BIOS and how it WORKS and how it can be used by applications or the user, so I was wondering if you can help me a bit? How could this be useful?

  • Primary BIOS
    Release Date
    Serial Number
    BIOS Version
    BIOS Major Version
    BIOS Minor Version

How would any of this information be useful to me?

Thanks

Lokki

It wouldn't. Best thing you can do is forget the bios exists.A Google search on what does computer bios do will yield plenty of informative references. For example: http://www.howstuffworks.com/bios1.htm, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS

Quote
I'm trying to find out more about the BIOS and how it works and how it can be used by ... the user ...
Many users never have any need to ever access the BIOS screen(s) and change settings in it. One case where a user will need to access it is to change the boot sequence, or priority, for devices the computer can boot from. For example, if you want to boot from a DVD/CD or a flash drive and the hard drive is SET as the first boot device, you would need to change boot sequence so that the computer tries to boot from the preferred device first and then, if no media on first/preferred device is present, the computer looks to the next device, etc., until it FINDS a bootable device in the list (usually the hard drive).

Changing BIOS settings should be DONE with great caution to avoid causing issues that are difficult to fix; changing only one setting at a time is generally the best practice. MAKE a note of any changes so that you know how to reverse that change if necessary.

If you want to get some info about the BIOS such the items in your list, I suggest using Belarc Advisor. I haven't used it for quite some time but I know it reveals some info about the BIOS. Would that info be useful to you? Probably not unless you have a specific technical need or reason to know.

Solve : Desktop Gadgets Suddenly Won't Display Properly?

Answer»

SYX Systemax Tower PC running Windows 7 Pro 64 software. All systems are GO except:

I use 3 internally provided "gadgets" on my desktop - the CPU monitor, the currency converter set to Canadian dollars, and the WEATHER monitor set to Vancouver, BC Celsius. A few days ago, after a Windows update download session, they stopped operating correctly. They each still show the "data" for each function, but the graphics have become inop.

The CPU says "CPU usage 08%, RAM 47%" in words, but the two little dials and pointers are gone. The currency indicator says "USD 1.000, CAD 1.066" but the the gold bar graphic is gone. The weather says "-7 deg, Vancouver, CAN" but the graphic of sun or clouds or rain is gone. All other desktop icons look normal and operate as expected. Desk top wall paper is the same as before.

Anyone else ever seen this? Any suggestions for a fix appreciated. Probably because MS has dropped all support for Desktop gadgets due to the fact they provide a security risk...Including the ones I use, which come in the Windows software? The same came in my laptop, and in both of my kids laptops, all different manufactures? I never went on line to search out external gadgets. I still use the gadgets on my Windows 7 systems for both 32 and 64 bit which are fully patched and here is the list of ones I use with no problems:

Clock - selected from the Windows 7 gadgets selection built into Win 7 and I check the box to show the red second hand.
CPU Monitor - This one is not from the built in Windows 7 gadgets selection, but I got it from a trusted source.
Network Monitor - Just like the CPU Monitor not PART of Win 7 selection and got from same trusted source 3 or 4 years ago.
Weather - Selected from Windows 7 gadgets selection built into Win 7, just had to enter my zip code for it to know location.

All 4 of these work flawlessly on 4 systems that they are on.

*Note: The security risk in gadgets is mainly if you have a dirty gadget installed from a 3rd party. It is not a risk if you have clean gadgets. I feel that the reaction to stop using all of them immediately was going overboard, and was also a driving force to try to force people to go to Windows 8.x if they want these features back. If it was as big of a problem as it was hyped out to be, there would have been an immediate patch to shut off the gadgets feature forced down to us from Microsoft. All they did was cause a stir and drop their hosting of the gadget downloads and on the same page that says sorry we no longer host these gadgets promote Windows 8 to try to push people to 8 who really dont need Windows 8.

I would suggest removing the gadgets from desktop. Then reboot, and then add them back and see if this fixes the problem. If it doesnt and you really want them to work, then there might be something corrupt in your system that is causing this and using Windows 7 repair disc to repair the build may be a solution or otherwise a clean installation of 7.

Like I said, I am using those gadgets and they are flawlessly working on 4 builds that are fully patched, so MS didnt as of yet kill the gadget service for Windows 7.

BTW: The CPU Monitor I use is great because it shows a graph of the active cores as well as memory use within that graph, so I can look at it and see a light blue line showing % of memory in use, and yellow and green line for the dual-core CPU to see how the CPU has functioned over the last 30 seconds on the graph. In addition to this it shows core actvity in bars with % as well as shows CPU details and core frequency, so I can see when it throttles back or runs at full speed.

The Network monitor has useful into such as Your IP, IP issued from ISP, upload and download speeds, graph showing network traffic of system among available bandwidth, and also shows how much data has been uploaded or downloaded with option to reset to 0 and clear the data or refesh the data.

*This Network Monitor was useful in detecting that a free game was attempting to use my system as a bit-torrent share among other gamers, but it was flooding my network connection with others needing game updates etc and this was affecting my internet speed with this uncontrolled upload flood and with an upload speed that is 1/5 the download speed this caused issues surfing the web and watching netflix etc because this games torrent was not designed to be courteous among other network needy services that also needed to share bandwidth on the upload pipe side, so I was able to kill off the sharing of this unwanted torrent to where I can get updates from others, but I am NOT willing to share with others the game updates and slow down my internet connection in the process.

In addition to this, this Network gadget also brought to my attention to a malware infection on my wifes system where she clicked on something on facebook and the antivirus didnt detect a problem, and there was unusual traffic to strange IP's. Doing and IP lookup I found that there was some identity in Venezuela connecting with this system when I fired up Wireshark to watch the traffic on my LAN between my wifes system and outbound. I ended up rebuilding her system clean and not messing around about what looked like a keylogger that was not sending the keys in real time, but sending them in timed interval bursts. She had MSSE installed and it didnt catch it. Malwarebytes when run detected all sorts of issues. I have also since then limited her privileges to user vs admin and this has avoided some issues as for she will state, it needs a password to do something and I ask what are you doing and she is like oh I am on a coupons website and the system chimed and popped up asking for the system admin password. I then say, we are not entering the system admin password to run whatever unknown script/installer wants to run as admin to install problems. And I am the only one who knows this system admin password, so i can control what is installed. LOL

Plain and simple... Gadgets to many are still important features to have! Just run the ones that are known to be clean if you do, and dont take chances downloading 3rd party ones that can be dirty!ALL FIXED!

The repair was simple in the end.

I had upgraded (?) to IE11 about a week ago. I subsequently found several other things not working properly, including certain other software. Contacting that software provider, they stated that IE11 was causing their product problems and suggested I uninstall IE11, which would cause it to revert to IE 10. I did the uninstall and every problem was cured.

My gadgets are all back to normal.

Moral: Beware of IE11!

Thanks for the heads up and glad you have it worked out. I did a clean build to my wifes system last night to put clean install to SSD in her system and did the IE 11 update and her gadgets have not acted up yet, but GOOD to know that IE 11 has some issues with certain gadgets in case we have any issues down the road.

Solve : Graphic card problem/Driver problem ??

Answer»

Over the last few days I have been experiencing purple lines going down vertically and patches of blue on my screen whenever I START up my laptop. Occasionally, my laptop will start up normal but after awhile it will have show the purple lines and the laptop will restart. So far what I've learnt is that my laptop will work fine in the safe modes (sometime the lines will show but the laptop wont restart) and that if the laptop starts up normally it will soon crash and restart.

I can't seem to pin-point what the problem is, what i'm guessing it is is the graphics card of the driver. I have a Toshiba laptop, windows 7 Ultimate. I am very INEXPERIENCED with LAPTOPS and computers, but I'm certain that if someone will help explain how to fix this that I'll be able to fix it.Quote

Solve : Removing Windows 7 from slave drive without formatting drive?

Answer»

Trying to remove prior Win7 install from D: drive HDD when Win7 is now on C: SSD.

In the past I just formatted the drive and its clean.

My problem is that I have data and programs installed on D: that I do not want to completely wipe out, so the easy formatting is not going to work for me.

I was thinking of USING Linux to remove Windows 7 from this D: drive to get the 17.8GB back. Is this the best method or is there a better method to get around the Access Denied issue when trying to remove when I am the System Admin and should be able to delete it, but cant?If you are logged into Windows on your system partition and WISH to remove a different Windows installation you should be able to do so after taking ownership. I always use this utility to add "take ownership" to the context menu: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/If you have data and programs on the partition on that slave drive, why not create a separate partition and move the personal files you want to keep to it and then format the partition with Win 7 on it? And, of course, if possible, backing up those data files to an external HD or flash drive or optical disc would be a good safety measure. soybean WROTE:

Yah I was going to go this route, but before doing so I realized that it was likely not going to be successful because I would run into the problem of files in use by Windows 7 of the C: install, since I told MSSE and other programs that run services to install to D:\program files instead of the default install. So instead of killing services and then moving the data to external. Then formatting drive clean, and then copying the data back, and then a reboot to bring the services up clean again and verify that all is well, I avoided this route.

This is probably the best method other than using Linux. I have used Linux in the past to blow away files that cant be removed by normal means such as malware files in temp folder etc, and while it works ok at deleting files, I have heard of issues with using Linux to remove NTFS files to where the file system can become corrupt, so its only in extreme situations that I resort to the Linux shotgun method to removal of files or folders. I'll give this a try when I get home from work.

Thanks everyone Just to be clear Dave, after taking ownership of the secondary Windows installation you would just delete it as you would any other folder. I'm guessing you know that, but no harm in saying it.Yup, already know that, but good to state in case anyone ever reads this on a google hit some day.

Solve : Addition of extra memory?

Answer»

I have a VAIO PCG-4K1M (VGN-TX5XN) with Windows 7 (32 -bit) Professional/Service Pack 1/ installed on my system. It has 1.5 GB of main memory (RAM).

My TuneUp Utilities has suggested for several times now that I need at least 2 GB of main memory to guarantee optimal operation - a noticeably increasing of system PERFORMANCE.

What shall I do? Can I keep the 1.5 GB and not worry? THANKS . INFO online suggests that the maximum memory is 2GB for this model. Do you already have 2GB installed with integrated video allocating up to 500MB of it leaving 1500MB left for OS?

I have a NETBOOK that has 2GB of RAM of which only 1792MB is left free after 256MB is allocated as the max setting for video. The best thing you can do with TuneUp Utilities is uninstall it. It's useless.

Solve : Bad Sound?

Answer»

Audio playback on my HP2133 pops and crackles on playback - online/offline, plugged in/battery, speakers/ headphones, audio/video. I've run the Microsoft Fixit.AudioPlayback and it didn't find any problems. Running Vista. How can I GET it to run smoothly? Audio Adapter may be damaged. Quickest and cheapest fix is to buy a USB Audio Adapter. I have bought a few of these myself and they work PERFECT and at a cost of like $9 you cant beat it. The last one I bought was 7.1 sound and the sound quality works perfect and the microphone jack works perfect with logitech headset I have for GAMING.

I bought one of these INITIALLY when my daughters integrated audio on her Foxconn motherboard died and it worked with no problems and no software had to be installed. Within about 5 seconds of connecting it it was working.

I bought another for my desktop gaming system which is a 2009 hardware build with 2008 guts in it and the motherboard does not have Windows 7 audio drivers that make the mic work, only sound works on Windows 7, so I installed one of these into a front USB jack and this way I can game and chat with friends through vent etc with no problems.

I am one of the people who gave this device 5 eggs at newegg. This is the one I plugged into my daughters computer.

I also bought this one for myself with more features for $12

Solve : Cant type in software, computer keeps flashing?

Answer»

I have a weird problem. ONLY in my profile, while on the computer, windows 7, the last week or 2 my browser and computer seem to lightly flash. During this flash, I cannot type. When it stops, I have to click the mouse on my notebook to set the cursor, and try to type again. Once again while typing, the computer will flash and I can't type. I have to keep resetting the cursor during flashing just to type a letter here and then during typing. Crazy.

My computer works fine in other profiles. I've reset BROWSERS, but since it HAPPENS in word, and pad, it's not browser lately, I don't think. I've done the following: Eusing registry DEFRAG, clean, Spybot, Adaware, Iobit, and Avast. All is good. It's just my profile.
What can I do to stop all the crazy blinking so I can use my profile again. I'm under guest right now and I have no problems. It's fine in safe mood. ThanksHave you THOUGHT about just CREATING yourself a new profile and moving your files over to it?

Solve : Windows 7 32-bit installation size question?

Answer»

Anyone install Windows 7 32-bit HOME Premium lately to share the INSTALLATION SIZE after SP1 and updates etc, before programs are added to share the installation size?

I was thinking about reversing the drives in my wifes system to make it more responsive to make the SSD the boot drive and make her IDE HDD the software installation drive, but her SSD is only a 30GB SATA II drive, and I am curious as to if itis large enough to take a Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium installation or not without going into a rebuild to find out it ran out of space.

Her computer is a Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz with 2.5GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium installed currently to a 160GB ATA100 IDE HDD, and I feel that the performance gain would be pretty noticable if I swapped roles of the 2 drives by placing the OS onto the SSD and placing the other software on the IDE HDD. She uses the computer mostly for web surfing and watching netflix and hulu and facebook games, and occasionally runs World of Warcraft. I tested the load time of World of Warcraft on the IDE HDD VS the SSD and the SSD loads the game about 10 seconds faster than the IDE drive, but once loaded the game runs normal. I am thinking she would feel like the computer is a new computer with an SSD as the main drive.I've run Windows 7 Pro X64 on a 30GB SSD for the best part of a year. I have a couple of lighter games, a bunch of programs and some data, and 6GB free space which is adequate. I disabled hibernation as it's a waste of space, other than that I didn't make any major tweaks. IMO, there's no need to limit EVEN a 30GB SSD to be "just" the boot drive, it's perfectly feasible to install software on it as well. Thanks for the info. Will perform the drive swap then.

Solve : Temporarily Disabling Programs in the Control Panel?

Answer»

Seems to me this would be a useful feature. I searched it, and im guessing antivirus stuff is about the only programs the computer will allow you to disable. I could be wrong, and to be honest id be shocked if i werent. You can disable things in the device manager. What about the control panel?

Maybe you are having trouble with a program, and are just not quite sure which one it is....or if its even that at all. (like i am )

I dunno. It just feels like something that would be useful and easily do-able. No?Here is a suggestion. Use one of the excellent tools you can get free.
Search for a program called 'WinPatrol' and download it.
Quote

WinPatrol has become a heavyweight in its class and is considered a "must" on any PC by most users. The latest version of WinPatrol brings several improvements, limiting PC resource consumption while adding even more security and stability. With WinPatrol you can rest assured that all your expectations will be fulfilled effectively, providing an excellent user experience. Download WinPatrol now 100% free with absolutely no viruses or any other cyber-threats.

It does work.At command prompt: msconfig.MSCONFIG was DESIGNED as a diagnostic utility and should only be used at such. To temporarily disable apps it's fine, but to permanently disable apps there are lots of simple utilities (such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel or, as Geek mentioned, WinPatrol - though the former is among the SIMPLEST for just disabling startup apps).Kool! thanks. I figured it was do-able. One THING i should have mentioned was the my OS is x64 and both of the programs that you gentlemen mentioned are 32bit installs. I guess im not sure how to approach that scenario.

Im a bit new to 64 bit and my guess is that a "bridge" or compatibility mode would be my solution. Thats a total guess, as i know nothing about either circumstance.

Nope! I was totally wrong about that. Winpatrol does have a 64 bit application....Hence the screen name Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 20, 2013, 10:14:58 AM

Im not sure what to make of your post. Ive never had anyone knowingly identify my IP, ISP, and web browser. Is this a concern? Are you joshing me? It's in his "signature" - this means that he has chosen, via his forum profile settings, to add an app which shows each viewer of his posts their own ISP, IP address, and browser name/version. Your information is only seen by you. You can put all kinds of things in your signature area. You can go into your forum profile and check "Don't show user's signatures". It's in the "Look and LAYOUT" section.Quote from: digidummy on October 20, 2013, 05:54:32 PM
Kool!

Startup Control Panel does not require an install and it works just fine with 64 bit OS's

You can get an installer which puts in the Control Panel "Startup Control Panel 2.8 (59kb)" or "Standalone EXE Version (34kb)" which goes wherever you want. As Mike Lin says, his StartupMonitor complements it nicely. It is a program which runs in the background and warns you that a program is trying to get itself to start with Windows, and asks if that is OK or not.

Solve : Bluetooth Headset?

Answer»

I am trying to connect a StraightTalk Bluetooth Headset Model # STB13W1021 to my Dell N5110 laptop. I have ATTACHED a screenshot of the specs on my laptop. My computer is able to "find" the bluetooth headset and the drivers download and I receive the message that the device is ready to use. I then try to play MUSIC from my lap top and have no audio through the headset though the computer speakers work fine.

When I check playback devices the bluetooth headset is not shown. When checking Bluetooth settings, all settings seem to be set correctly but when I close settings I get the error that "Windows Shell Common dll has stopped working" Also when I check Bluetooth services for the headset it shows "Listen to Music" and "Forward VOIP calls to handsfree" but neither links are active. (see screenshot)

My son also has the same Dell computer using Windows 7 Home Premium but does not have Service Pack One. I was able to connect this headset to his computer without a problem and the Bluetooth services links are active on his computer. The headset works great. I have gone through all the settings and compared them to his computer and they appear to be the same.

I have connected this headset to my Droid 2 phone and it works properly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

David

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]You need to right click on the volume button (bottom right) and then select Playback Devices. Then select your blue tooth device and set it as your default.

Should be GOOD to go.Thanks for the reply. I did this and the bluetooth device does not show in the list of output devices.

For what it's worth, I have Ubuntu 12.4 on this laptop as well and can connect bluetooth as well, but sound will not come thru device

Thinking it is something with Dell computer itself....

David Refer to these articles and see if it helps.

Hi,

I looked over those sites and though I found nothing SPECIFIC, it did get me thinking and thinking that the problem had to do with my computer itself, I began LOOKING at the Intel Bluetooth/Wireless software. Having nothing to lose, I first located the files and found downloads of these files on the Intel site. I then uninstalled all software having to do with Intel Bluetooth/Wireless software and reinstalled them.

The Bluetooth headset was installed again and now appears in the list of sound "playback devices" . In order to get the headset to work I have to left click on the Headset icon in the "Bluetooth devices" window and then click on "play music" in order to play music from my computer through the headset. I also notice that the "double green lines" between the headphone icon and the Dell icon is no longer there. This is probably the reason I must repeat the above procedure each time I turn off the headset and then turn it on again.

It is still not operating correctly but I have made progress.

Thanks

Solve : Gmail account?

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, for several days to access this account and I keep getting the message "untrusted CONNECTION" Is it safe to bypass this? My poor wife is going crazy without mail. Most LIKELY YES... but that is a risk you would have to take.Which app is giving you this warning message ? ?I get the message 'invalid security certificate' Does mean I shouldn't bypass and go in?How would I clear something like this? I've run Malware Bytes and I have
Avast free on the computer. There are several things that could cause you to see this, the main one would be a TIME clock mismatch. In other words make sure your clock is setup correctly and check the battery on your motherboard. Also I am assuming you are using Mozilla Firefox as your browser, please correct me if I am wrong. There are extensions and instructions that tell you how to bypass these warnings. I would not use those if directed tho, to many unsecure items out there. But if you now you are going to a correct and legitimate WEBSITE you can move past the warning by continuing. I will never directly tell anyone to do that, I would only tell you what I would do, which is to bypass it move on.
Thanks Chris...When I checked the clock, it read May 26, 2004. I reset it and things improve. Not a problem. Check it a few times this week to make sure its not losing it.Thanks guys...seems to be working OK.

Solve : Transferring a hard drive, complete w/os into another computer?

Answer»

I have a dead computer in my juke box and want to transfer the hd into one that works. When i tried, the computer would not boot using the os in the hd. To complicate it, the windows version in the hd im trying to use is in Spanish. Anyone have any ideas?
Welcome to CH.
You have posted in the Windows part of the forum.
If you are using SunOS, your question should be given to the UNIX and Linux experts. In general, no Windows OS will read the files. You will need a computer with a compatible Linux system.

Furthermore, the old computer may be a workstation or server that has hardware MUCH different from a Personal Computer.

Anyway, the procedure is to 'slave ' the HARD drive as a secondary drive and mount in into the Linux OS.

Some details about the jukebox? How old is it? Who made it?As far as I can see, the original poster made no mention of any Linux or Unix installation; he posted in the Windows VISTA SECTION; he mentions he is trying to use a "Spanish version of Windows". Also, I suspect that "juke box" is a typo or mistake and "junk box" is what is meant.

Anyhow: Retireded, the answer to your question is "Each installation of Windows is tailored to the hardware FOUND at install time. In most cases, therefore, you cannot move a hard drive with Windows on it to another computer and expect it to work. In your case you definitely cannot, as you have already found". Any ideas? Using a legal, properly licensed Windows install disk, format the hard disk and make a fresh install of Windows.

Solve : Computer turns off without warning?

Answer»

Hello everyone

usually i can troubleshoot some of the PC problems, but this one really got me thinking... 2 weeks ago the computer was making this static sound then go louder and the Computer turns off, it did not turn back on so i had to wait a few mins, unplug it from the wall or turn the PSU switch Off and On again so it could start. This first happen when playing a one of my video games, then it happen while on the internet watching videos and surfing...first i thought it was a Heating problem so i check for that. No, no heating problem, CPU, MotherBoard, NorthBridge, all stay unnder 45C while working and the CPU drop down to around 15C at idle. The only i have seen at 60-70C is the Video Card but that's when i'm playing games, then it drops down to ~35C.

List of things i have done so far without any success.

Clean the dust off the case and Motherboard with compress air.
Added 2 120mm fans to the case. it's running 5 fans now (1 front, 2 side, 1 rear, 1 top) CPU, PSU and GPU have their own fans as well. (8 total?)
Clean off and replace the Thermal Paste on the CPU.
Replaced the PSU with a bigger one, (from 650w to a 750w)
Run Anti-virus (it checked out clean)
Replaced the Hard Drive
Installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and all drivers
Removed the Ram and try one stick at a time
Removed the sata connectors and place them on different ports
removed the Video Card and place it on another slot
Log-on in SAFE MODE & SAFE MODE with NETWORKING
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (no errors where found)

as you can see, i have done a LOT of things and it still restarting without any warning like when you hit the RESET button

1. Try a different video card.
2. If still no success, RMA motherboard to Gigabyte.Update:

I removed all the heatsink from the motherboard (marked in red) and i found that the thermal paste was kinda dryout on the bottom 2 so i clean it very good and reapply it. one thing to NOTICE is that the top heatsink doesn't use thermal paste, it use some kind of tape, the tape have some kind of glue and had melted off down and all the connection under it where wet (some kind of moisture) so i clean/dry everything with a hairdryer, turned the tape on the other side, and reapply it, this time there is no clue to leak or melt  finnaly i put everything back together and it's been stable so far, i will keep you all posted.

Solve : Network Installation?

Answer»

We don't have a dvd drive in this unit an want to install a different copy of windows on to a Dell Dimension 8200. Trying to figure out how to SET it up to do this. If nothing else, I'll attach one via usb when I get the chance too.You can install Windows through the use of a USB flash drive if the computer will support booting off it.

There isn't ANYWAY you can directly boot off a DVD / CD in the DVD drive of another PC, you can set up a server that will let you do a PXE boot, but that's so much more hassle than it's worth. This should be fun...I was able to pull one from a MACHINE that I'm trying to build. Just attempting to make do with what I had at the time an didn't feel up to pulling one from a working unit. Going to attach the drive EXTERNAL an do the installation.Yet another waste of our time. Solve : Boot problems after defrag?

Answer»

I SET my computer to defrag overnight. When I woke up I FOUND my laptop had restarted itself during the defrag process and now will not boot into windows properly.

I can enter safe mode, as I am now. It will boot windows but does not bring up the login screen. It just turns black after it shows the windows logo.

Is there anything I may be able to do from safe mode other than a windows 7 boot disk, which I currently do not have? Was it running on battery power ? ?...sounds like chkdsk didn't complete.
Boot to safemode...select Advanced Boot Menu/Command prompt...type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter.
Do NOT interrupt it

Actually i just noticed you stated defrag...it shouldn't need to re-boot after that.
Let us know.Hi

Don't run chkdsk /r unless you don't care about your DATA or you have a complete backup.

If you don't have a complete backup now is a good time to do that first.

Then run the chkdsk as Patio suggested, as it could make the drive worse it also could fix it but you won't know until you run it. Hence the suggestion of the backup.

if chkdsk doesn't fix it a windows system restore may and that is reversible.

You may want to use a bootable linux disc to mount your drive and recover your important data since your not able to log into windows. I would presume that you've run defrag as things got slow on read/write access but it is not necessary for Windows 7 has set a SCHEDULE defrag operation that runs in the background ALREADY.

Solve : Can I delete .tmp files that are 0 Bytes and others??

Answer» C:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\Temp
Has lots of un-useful .tmp FILES with 0B of data I Don't Know if it is ok to delete these , but these files never GO away.

So can I delete the 0Kb or 0B .tmp files?

I have deleted 1.5 GB of .html files in the Temp folder before.Reboot your system. After doing so you can delete ANY files in your temp folder. The reason for the reboot is that if you recently installed any software or updates, they SOMETIMES place files in the temp folder that will execute on the next boot to complete installation.

Solve : 64 bit?

My xps 8500 windows 7 is 18 MOS. old. I did something to it that wasn't allowing me to install or uninstall so I had to do a restore to factory.
Now I'm missing things.
Like I can't find the IE 64 bit link.
There use to be a 32 and 64 link in start.
Where do I find it?
Thanks. jStart/All Programs/ IE...64BIT...
What exactly did you do ? ?Well.... , what STARTED it all was when I downloaded a program called Should I REMOVE it. It wouldn't install (said I didn't have access or admin rights), which I did. And that's where it all went WRONG. I started clicking with all the instructions on 'rights'. I was then told I couldn't undo it and had to reinstall to 'from the factory' condition in F8.

Solve : Windows 7 Login user accounts problem.?

Answer»

I was on my adminstrator account and I created a new account and SWITCHED the account's type to administrator while switching the account I was already on to a standard account. So I logged off and tried to enter the newly created administrator account but and message appeared and SAID that the profile service could not login, profile could not load. I had no choice but to enter the older (standard) account. And as a standard user I had all these restrictions imposed on me. I required administrator permission to do installations and even to change my account type to avoid this. It wouldn't have been such a problem since the administrator account didn't even have a password set but because the other profile couldn't be located I wasn't able to do anything at all and not disable that account. I ended up being able to enter the administrator account via the service DIRECTORY restore mode option accessed by pressing F7 as Windows starts up and going to advanced optins. Once there a message appeared and said:

C:\\windows\system32\config\\systemprofile\desktop refers to a location that is unavailbale. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to internet or your network (which I am) and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
I noticed that in that safe mode, I still couldn't change the account type of the other user profile and I couldn't access the libraries directory of the account I was already on. Unfortunately, in advanced user profiles, the files of the other now standard user profile ended up getting erased and when I got exited safe mode to enter that account, the same unable to load profile message came that appeared for the other account. So now I have to accounts whose profile could not be loaded and only one (the administrator new created) profile can be accessed via the mode restore safe mode addressed above.

Please help as I cannot do many things now such as install software and I only have default programs available to me in this mode.*Now I have 2 accounts whose profile could not be loaded...Do you mean you can't login your old account and it logs you on a TEMPORARY one? Do you mean you can't login your old account and it logs you on a temporary one? I had a problem like this and chkdsk command solved it

Solve : Menue Key? Windows Vista is the Software Purchased & May have update to Windows?

Answer»

I first must apologize for my lack of basic intelligence! When I purchased my laptop & all my equiptment for the desktop (over $5000.00) in 2009 I was at the top of my game...4 days later & a minor car accident the dreaded M.S. came back w/a vengence & I loose brain cells practically every minute! Once a scholar now a minor...but I keep on trucking...so anywho...when the google folks tell me on my gmail that I need to disable the compatibility mode by holding down the alt key (I know what this is) and the menue button...hummm, that is where I am lost...is that the start button? And please know I did try reading thru your dictionary & other info but unless it is SIMPLE & pretty much right in front of me I get so frustrated I wind up quitting. i was sold the vista home premium by the big box store & promised an upgrade to windows 8 in 1.5 months but ALAS the accident & 4 days after purchase all was packed away for just over a year and then when I called them they told me it was past the time for the free upgrade ^& I'd have to purchase the software. So I am not sure if ther is free software that is good out there or not....again, kind of lost. Still re-newing my Norton at about $100 a year & wondering if I am being burnt on that too? Now on disability that $100 could sure go to better use if there is free security software out there. So many thanks to any & all who read this and don't think me a fool, I am truly trying very hard to hold on & not expose myself to users & abusers, (trust me they are everywhere) and have bankrupted me! Many Blessing for your attempt to help folks! MommaNancyOn a Windows desktop PC keyboard, the menu key is in the row of keys nearest the front, to the right of the SPACE bar. Not every keyboard has one.

As for free Windows security software, Microsoft's own "Microsoft Security Essentials" is enough for very many people, including me. Google for it. Stop paying that money to Norton.

The big box store couldn't have promised a Free upgrade to Win8 as it wasn't even out when they were still selling Vista PC's...

However it won't hurt to contact MS and explain what you were promised...they'll probably upgrade you to Win 7...which is fine for no charge as long as you provide all the pertinent purchase info as the deal was between the Big Box retailers and Microsoft...i'd bet they will honor the commitment. The other thing about your status is google should work absolutely fine on a Vista PC and i'm confused as to why they WOULD suggest anything to do with Compatibility Mode at all...Again, my apology! Any as usual the person who replied is correct! The purchase was on 7/5/2009 and it was windows 7 that was the upgrade promised by Best Buy. Please understand I do not blame them for the mishap of my missing th upgrade, it was not their fault that a short 4 days passed & I was out of commission....they were very co-operative when I took the printer in for service after only printing 75 pages and it failed. Seemed it was the one thing I did not buy the extended service on, they did offer me $75 credit toward anything in the store, including a new printer since the original one couldf not be fixed, printers apparently can not be stored for a year then brought back out with new ink & expected to preform like new (to my cox plete surprise & my wallets saddness). This time I bought online through H.P. and the warranty cost nearly as much as the printer but has a 24 hour turn around promise fix or new one at your door and they have been very good at their service agreement. My confusion with the keys is on my H.P Pavillion dx Laptop which I am able to use via my bed or easy chair with great comfort to this point. I have had the desk top repaired with a new mother board & one or two other tweeks from them as WELL, and I know all will think this is money thrown away and i should have just replaced the tower, but to a novice like myself you have to understand....this was a brand new purchase, the day I bought this computer the entire store was all excited as this item had only came in that day & was the "TOP OF THE LINE, FASTEST, NEWEST, & HOTEST ITEM ON THE MAKET" as I mentioned earlier....that was a much smarter, much more savy MommaNancy who did a lot of research, asked many questions of those more qualified then myself and didn't buy expensive electronics on a whim. So after a year long recovery & feeling like I had enough brain power to at least begin to start to enter the world of technology again, I wanted the use of the items I at least felt I had some knowledge of. So when after only a couple of weeks problems began it made sense to me to fix the hardware rather then buy new. Again, my apology! So please take these things into consideration before answering any questions, I will never mislead you on purpose, I may get confused, may have issues with finding the words to describe what I need to say, but am so very grateful that people like yourself exist to assist myself & others as it is so very hard getrting help otherwise. Solve : computer slow to respond to keyboard?

Answer»

When using the keyboard the screen DISPLAY is late in displaying the last keystroke so that the printed message is missing letters if typing at normal speed.

The computer is an ACER ASPIRE 5536 using Windows 7 Virus PROTECTION ,no viruses present

Any help appreciated

1) What is new or different since the last TIME everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, ERROR, etc)?

2) What is Windows 7 Virus Protection? Please run full SCANS with BOTH your anti virus app and with MalwareBytes.

3) Does the same thing happen in safe mode?

Solve : Installation in Progress ...??

Answer»

I have a laptop with Windows 7 in it. I'm having problems with installing windows updates...they just sit there and say.."1 of 10 updates installing. Do not turn off computer'. OK, but it NEVER proceeds from 1 ! What makes it worse, any other installs I try to do with any other programs I get, "there is a installation in progress. You must wait for that to finish"

Please HELP!!!Check your internet connection...speedtest.net...

Solve : Low Disc Space on ImageBackup (D:)?

Answer»

My desktop has begun popping up this warning every 15 minutes or so, in the lower right corner, and it's becoming a pain.

LOW DISK SPACE
You are running out of disk space on ImageBackup (D:).
Click here to see if you can free space on the drive.

When I click on it, it takes me to a window which suggests I delete some of the CONTENT of my waste basket...
except the waste basket has a content of 0 bytes.

Suggestions please?

Art Schubert You can either stop the warning (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555622) or delete some files from the drive. Thanks for the info.

BTW I did a (very, very long) disk CLEANUP and removed an incredible 90 G from C:. I didn't know such a pile of trash accumulation was possible.Except the error message was for D: which is your RECOVERY Partition and shouldn't be touched...
FOLLOW Allan's advice to turn off the nag screen...

Solve : Data transfer continues when all my browsers and IDM are closed, how to identify?

Answer»

I am using GOOGLE CHROME browser and INTERNET Download Manager(IDM) in Win 7 platform. I see that data transfer continues when all my browsers are closed and IDM shows that no items were downloading. I just want to know which program is using/updating this data and how to stop it(because in 2G speed I cannot perform ANOTHER work over Internet).
