Solve : Net Framework 3.5 Troubleshooting help?

Answer» HELLO,

I have a problem with a specific website on my laptop computer. I have tried Windows Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome BROWSERS on this computer and none work on this particular website. I can access that website on multiple other computers. I contacted the website developer and based on the issues I am having he suggested that there MIGHT be an issue with Net FrameWork 3.5 on my laptop. I have tried a number of different "repairs", based on info I found on the web. In the end I not quite sure what to make of all the results I got from the things I did other than that I am still suspicious that there is something wrong with the Net Framework 3.5 on this computer.

So I'm asking for help on how to go about verifying if Net Framework 3.5 is good on my computer and how to repair it if it is not.

Not sure where to start with giving any relevant info. My laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1 and it is a 64 bit.

Let me know what other info is helpful.

Thanks,

Tim What website ? ?The website is fightingflattops.com it is a "browser game" site. I can access the main page Ok. I run into the problems when I try to login from the main web page. For example attached is what I get using Internet Explorer (I have tried switching compatibility SETTINGS with different results).

The message I get when clicking on Current Games from the start page using Windows Explorer version 11 and Windows 7 service pack 1 and Fightingflattops.com added to the compatibility view settings is:

The XML page can not be dislayed

Cannot view XML input using XMS style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the REFRESH button, or try again later.

Access is denied

When I remove the web site from the compatibility view settings, I get the following after clicking on Current Games (I replaced my email address with XXXXXXXXXX):

Solve : How can I lower what I am typeing??

Answer»

Hi -
I hope I am putting this in the RIGHT place. I am running WINDOWS 7 and IE 9.
When I am typing in WordPad the first line is at the TOP of the page. After I type several lines I decide I need to type a line above the first line. I can not move down what I have typed so that I can type in another line. Is there a way to move the typed lines down from the top? Thanks Bob
Have I understood you correctly?

If you place your cursor before the first letter on the first line and press the [Enter] key, it will move the text down by one line space. If you press [Enter] twice, the text will move down by two lines. You will then have space above that section of text to type in another sentence.

High1High 1 -
Thanks for your reply. That was exactly what I needed and it WORKED. Bob

Solve : Signing in as Administator "requires evaluation." I am the only user/administra?

Answer»

I am the only user of this new computer (Windows 7). I only had one user account, administrator. Kim Komando RECOMMENDED I USE a STANDARD account and OPEN a new administrator account, which I did. Now, when I try to sign in as an administrator, I am told "The requested operation requires evaluation." I am using both a password, which I remember, and a fingerprint reader. Neither allow me to sign in without evaluation from a higher power?

Thank you, in advance okneal49 There is another administrator.
He is the System Administrator and his name is Administrator.
This have been explained b before on the forum.
To operate in a network, there is another sys administrator.. This account is present even when a network has no been created. It is built-in.

Boot hour computer pressing F8 and then pick sage mode.
I think the word is probably elevation. The message means you are trying to do something that needs Adminstrator permission.

Geek means "SAFE mode".
Thank you. Problem solved. okneal49Thank you. Problem solved. Wonderful...glad youre fixed up...

Solve : Sudden slow down?

Answer»

Yesterday my wife's laptop (Toshiba Satellite L755 with Intel i3-2330M, Win7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit, 4 GB RAM) suddenly went SUPER slow (somewhere between glacial and tectonic). The first odd thing I noticed was that the disk drive light was on steadily vs. the normal flickering. After Windows finally loaded and her desktop was accessible, I opened Task Manager but did not see anything odd, except that CPU usage was basically zero and Physical Memory was flatlined around 33%. Was finally able to do a quick scan using MS Security Essentials, but nothing was found. Tried to open Explorer to get additional tools (Avast and Malwarebytes) but cannot - keep getting "not responding" message. I did a restore to a few days ago but no CHANGE in performance.

She tells me that she had not clicked on any unfamiliar links in emails or web pages.

I'm at the end of my limited knowledge, so am seeking help.1) Why did you do a "restore"?

2) HOW did you do a "restore" (step by step please - EXACTLY what did you do)?

3) What happens when you boot to safe mode? Thanks for responding. Answering your questions:
1) I did a system restore thinking that since the computer was working OK the day before, there might have been some update that either did not completely download or install properly.
2) I used the windows system restore utility VIA the control panel. I selected the recommended restore point, which was a windows update done about two days earlier. It seemed to execute without problem. To note, the slow down occurred before I did the restore and did not improve afterwards.
3) I have started up the computer in safe mode as well as safe mode with networking. A "Windows Help and Support" window tries to open, but after many minutes of "Getting Help content" (no movement of progress bar) I end up canceling. No change in speed accessing files, etc.

Last night while trying to use this computer I noticed in the lower right corner of the screen the following:
Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine.

However, the copy is genuine (original installation when purchased) and have not seen that message before. Shut unit down and started back up this morning and the above message was not present. Please do the following:

1) right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

2) Run sfc /scannow ( http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html )

3) Run full system scans with BOTH your anti virus app and with MalwareBytesI am happy to report that this laptop is now operating normally! . Thanks, Allan!

Here is what I did and what happened:

1) Did full scans using MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, both in safe mode. MS found "Exploit: Java/CVE-2013-2423" and Malwarebytes found about 30 items with names STARTING in "PUP.Optional..." I removed everything, but when I rebooted the speed was the same (S L O W).
2) Ran chkdsk /r, which found and replaced bad clusters in one file. Nothing else noted. After restarting, I noted that the computer seemed to be responding normally.
3) Ran sfc /scannow which did not find any integrity violations.

Again, my heartfelt thanks to Allan for the help. You're very welcome. Glad it's all sorted out

Solve : wont boot anymore!?

Answer»

Dear CH!

Im ripping my hair out! About two weeks ago i decided to instal and old game Toca race driver 3 on my machine! Its running windows 7 Ultimate. anyways. The program asks to restart the COMPUTER and so i did. now i GET this screen: (sorry i cant post a photo but its exact wording)

Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change MIGHT be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. choose your language settings, and then click "next".
3. Click Repair your computer.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

this has happened before but then i just did a format and reload. Thats most likey what ill be doing again but i want to know what is causing this.
now i put my win 7 dvd into the drive and it shows the windows is loading files screen and then the computer restarts....
I have XP 64bit on a dual boot but for some reason i no longer can open firefox on it.... Is this a possible hard drive failure or curruption? what tools can in use to test it? Now my second try the computer did boot from the disc but i cant repair it. It says its not the same disc even though i know it is cause its the only disc for 7 i own! What on earth is going on? its not an old machine either. built it last summer. here are the specs:

AMD Fx 8120
8gb ram
asus m5a97 motherboard
1tb wd BLACK drive
msi r6870 hawk graphics card
850 watt PSUhttp://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-gaming/cannot-run-toca-driver-3-on-windows-7/aea5fd60-cafd-4d12-8b24-7f287bb758b7

This program is not Windows 7 compatible, so you will likely need to repair Windows 7 and AVOID using it on 7.

Solve : Folder Icons?

Answer»

Salute! amigos'!

Does anyone know how to get desktop folder icons to appear The icons on my desktop are OK, it is just the small icons within my desktop folders that will not show an icon ...for the most part anyway?
Not sure what you mean by "small icons within my desktop folders".

To put a shortcut to a file or folder on your desktop, follow the procedure at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-delete-shortcut#1TC=windows-7Quote from: soybean on January 15, 2014, 08:33:53 AM

Like most of us I suppose, I have folders on my desktop in which I store different programs (thus ELIMINATING desktop clutter). The icons of the programs that I have stored in these folders are not showing? The box standard Windows icon appears? Even though these same programs HAD icons when I first installed them on my desktop?? AWW ..don't anyone know what I mean here?? I think I understand your issue, do you mean all icon in your desktop does not have any ASSOCIATION with any application? and they all look alike.
Just like if you have excel file and you do not have Excel installed?

If that what you see i think you have big corruption in your system, back up your file and rebuild your system.
when you open these icon in your desktop, do they open correctly? if Yes, you have a problem with your video card, memory or both.
If NO, that mean your system is corrupted.

Good Luck.

Hi abofihmi ...thanks for the reply here! No my desktop icons are fine and respond OK. It is when I put a PROGRAM into a 'desktop folder' that the icon disappears and YEs it does look as if it has no association! However, the program still works despite no icon??

See what I mean guys??? The programs still WORK??

Solve : streaming radio on computer?

Answer»

I am using firefox or INTERNET explorer to try and listen to a local streaming of a radio broadcast and now its not working on any of my compurters?
Maybe the radio station has gone off the air.
Can you git other radio stations?
http://www.onlineradiostations.com/
There are lots and lots of stations.
seem to be this one radio station ? any ideas ?
If its just the one station you can contact the station DIRECTLY and see if they still stream.

I have a small USB thumb drive that I bought that has a bundled interface for listening to music from all around the WORLD, and some of them will stream right from the browser, while some others want to install a player to play it since they dont stream directly thru browser. I avoid installing any players since if they cant supply it through a regular stream, then there must be some benefit to them for you to have this special player installed to listen to their music vs a regular audio stream, and stuff like that usually POINTS to spyware etc where its free to listen to the stream because they are getting paid by collecting data from your web habits or hitting you with advertisements through their player etc.

I am thinking that they MAY have dropped the stream. What is the station link so we can confirm its dead from our end?

Solve : Ox000003eb?

Answer»

Hi got a tuffy problem here and so far nothing has fixed it so posting here fingers crossed for a fix finally.

Using win7 HP - 64 bit / 6 gigs of ram and a canon printer model MG 3520. And Asus U 57 A laptop,

When i try to install the drive and yes from the cd and from the web site; i get 90 percent done then get this error which i found out is an MS not canon error which so far MS refuses to offer a fix; getting " Operation COULD not be completed error 0x000003eb so my printer can t be used yet; when i try to click on print in the dialog box the print is greyed out; the i check printers and devices and theirs nooo printer their as it should be.

My virus scanner FINDS nothing; malware bytes and superantisryware FIND nothing; tryed and clean reboot 3x and nothing ; windows installer; print spooler and printer are all on; set on automatic and are running; then used reg.exe and made use that was clean of all printers i hads before canon.

What very weird is that luckly i have a 2nd lap top and printer works fine; normal no problem; so that begs the question whats going wrong with the 2nd laptop thats not going wrong with the 1st and how do i compare the two laps so i might list what on both lap tops then guessing whats ever on lap 2 but not lap 1 i maybe should delete HOPING my printer then runs ?

Thinking that the system log as the ongoing error posted and that would be a huge help but not sure where that would and what would i be look for.

So what have i missed; keep missing in order to finally get the printer to print on the Asus ? ? ?

Hoping somebody has a fix for this number error; because they are run into before; hopefully i am not the only one with this printer MS
number block; i am awaiting help ; a fix that works after going crazy trying to solve it myself for over 2 months; H E L P ! ! !

Thanks a bunch; waiting . .Some questions:

Are both laptops running Windows 7 64-bit so we are comparing 2 exactly like computers OS wise?

Have you run memtest86 on this troubled laptop to make sure that the RAM is working flawless?

Have you saved your important data to external storage device and performed a factory install to this troubled laptop to bring it back to the way that it was when you purchased it NEW, then installed driver prior to connecting the printer?

** My thoughts are that you have corruption on this laptop that is causing this, a memory stick acting up, -or- you have 2 laptops and one of them with a different OS and works with this printer and the other is Win 7 64-bit and its an issue with this driver and Windows 7 64-bit.Uninstall all the printer software from ADD/Remove...
Go to device manger and right clik the printer and select uninstall...
Unplug the printer from the laptop.
Re-boot.
Run the printer software install app...wait til it tells you to connect the printer...
You should be good to go after that.

Solve : Extending a volume, formatting??

Answer» TAKE a brand new 2TB hard disk, and create a volume of 500GB and format it (NTFS). Now extend the volume by another 500GB, to 1TB. Does the extra 500GB need to be formatted? If so, can this be done without reformatting the first 500GB?

Briefly, why I'm doing this: I can't make the volume 2TB from the start, because formatting this much at once (using Disk Management) has never got beyond 54% before failing (program stops writing to disk). So I though of extending and formatting it in sections, but I don't see how to do this.

(Windows Vista, 32-bit.)Not sure why Vista wouldn't do this nativelly...try Easus Partition Manager Free Edition for the Task at hand
Thanks for replying, patio.

I found a few other useful pages where people reported that Windows Disk Management would not format their 2TB disks beyond 54%:
http://www.maximumpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=104461
http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/206391en?popup=true

It SEEMS the problem is mainly/solely confined to Vista (it's not clear whether or not XP is affected), and to machines with certain NVidia motherboards, from around 2008. The solution proposed by several people was to update the drivers for the SATA controller on the motherboard. I had to do this manually since both Windows and the NVidia website utility were convinced that my drivers were up to date, and it was not easy to find the right driver for my version of Windows and my model of motherboard at the NVidia site.

Another concern was to know what the very large downloaded .exe would do when run. In fact, it asks you what directory you want to unpack all the drivers to, and then lets you tick which sets of drivers you want to install. I think there were FOUR groups, I ticked only "storage" drivers, and they were installed. Now, just over five hours later, the disk is formatted to full size and I hope to start using it.

An alternative solution which was claimed to work was the same one suggested by patio, to format using Easus Partition Manager, though I wonder how that could get around a defect in the drivers? But the person who proposed it was talking about XP, I think. Anyway I thought it would be best to try updating the drivers first, and it worked.

Solve : To make a window OPEN on top and not disappear under all the rest.?

Answer»

(Win7Ultimate) Suddenly..... when I put my cursor on the left side of the taskbar to open a running program window, of course the small SCREEN pops up and shows... and if I move the cursor to that small window, the desired screen appears... BUT... only by itself and on top of the desktop with no other windows showing altho they are open and if I click on the small window to open the page, it opens for a second and then disappears... to the bottom-most window on top of the desktop. To get to it I must "park" all the windows on top of it to have access to the last called window that I want to work with... and PROVIDED it is NOT appearing full size, such as a browser window that does not jump to the rear or any other program window that is set to full size. It becomes complicated when the program that I am trying to work with ONLY open in a reduced size page and clicking on THAT screen to pull up a sub-menu, well THAT submenu also pops to the rear UNDERNEATH the main screen that is not full size and the only way to access the sub-menu that popped under the main one is to drag the main one out of the way to be able to see the sub-menu. I have tried take the precaution of making running pages full size so that they will stay on top, but there are programs that do not USE a full page and no way to make them full page. I have "repaired" Win7, I have reinstalled basic Toshiba (Laptop) drivers that AFFECT the display and several other suggested tweaks, but no bananas... Dexpot, Always on Top and other programs do not accomplish the mission as they are made to keep ONE window always on top. I am NOT trying to keep one certain window on top, I just want the last opened window to stay on top while I am using it.... ANYONE got any ideas? TnxYou post is Hard to follow.

Solve : Forcing install.exe and setup.exe into compatibility mode??

Answer» HELLO,

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and today I discovered that Windows was forcing Steam into Vista compatibility mode. So I read on the internet that I could fix this in the register using regedit to remove a string and I ofcourse did so. This indeed solved the problem! But in the precise part of the register where I fixed the Steam problem by deleting a string from there, were a couple of others strings which made me wonder if those forced something in compatibility mode too..

SCREEN of the mentioned strings:

Name: / Type: / Data:

Do these strings force all installers and SETUPS into Windows XP compatibility mode? And if so, can I remove this strings WITHOUT screwing things up? I ask this because I've noticed that whenever I launch a INSTALLER or setup my monitor gives a black screen for a second or so like it's switching his source (like switching a television to his AV source)..

Thanks in advance for your help and kind regards, Jansenzoon! The location of the keys in the register:

Solve : Even the BSOD crashes!?

Answer»

Probably System Restore files located in your System Volume Information folder(s). Could also be the pagefile (located in the root of c:) or your temporary internet files folder.Scratch the last question. I got what I need.

It looks like I'm unable to a Repair Install (Upgrade Install) while booted from the Windows installation USB I created. It's telling me I need to be booted into the Windows on my HDD in order to be able to run the Upgrade Install option from the USB. I've come across people with the exact same issue running various Google searches and so far there's been no confident answer on how to GET around this issue and "trick" the Windows installation into thinking its been booted from the HDD. Any ideas?I don't know of a way to do a repair/upgrade install from the USB or DVD, only from within Windows.
I'll watch and perhaps learn something if there's a trick to doing it.A Repair Install and an Upgrade Install are 2 different THINGS...

What exactly is it you have on the USB stik ? ?

Can't you just create a bootable DVD with Win7 Ultimate on it ? ?...that's what you use to run a Repair Install...Actually, the upgrade install and repair install are the same thing. From all i've read you can do a clean install from the Upgrade media...but not a Repair install...

1 Source...You can "Repair Windows" from the installation disc, but that hasn't worked for me. What I'm trying to do is do an upgrade install (or repair install) from my bootable USB with Windows 7 Ultimate on it. This seems to be impossible when booted from that USB, which means I don't have many options other than a clean install since I can't boot Windows from my HDD. I've come across a few places online where people make it sound like it might be possible to "trick" the installation into thinking the computer is booted from the HDD, allowing a repair install from the USB, but so far I haven't found anything conclusive. Also, I tried booting Ubuntu and then running the upgrade install from the USB, but it kept coming back with ERRORS saying it couldn't complete that action.Quote from: patio on January 22, 2014, 07:13:51 AM

From all i've read you can do a clean install from the Upgrade media...but not a Repair install...

1 Source...
correct, that's not what I was saying. An upgrade install is the same as a repair install - but yes, both have to be done from an full version install disc, not an upgrade version. It wasn't clear to me that in your first post you were saying that a repair install and an upgrade install from an upgrade version are 2 different things. We're saying the same thing. Just a little semantic issue Allan,
We always say the same things...just differently.
However i'll stick to my point a repair install isn't an option from the upgrade CD/DVD...
Just sayin. You and my wife - have to have the last word Heee...give her my best...

Here's the solution that worked for me, for anyone else who may be interested: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html

Solve : Blue screen -> no games work -> can't install graphics drivers?

Here's what display adapter's properies say:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Have you removed the video card to force Windows to boot off of Integrated Graphics. This should get past this problem as for the OS should detect the hardware change and run with default graphics with integrated.

If the OS still blue screens then I'd perform a repair of the OS with the installation DVD or Repair Disc if you have one for this OS.

According to here: It looks like it has integarted video as an option.... http://media.msi.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=23512I haven't tried to force start it with "integraphics". But i will certainly try it, though i think my pc will run normally. I tried to insert my friend's graphics card and it WORKED normally the first few days, later, device manager says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I uninstalled the device, and reinstalled it, first time this fix worked, but later it failed. Not to rain on the parade here...but if 2 different cards exhibited the same symptoms the vid card slot may be the issue...which would mean a MBoard replacement...Is it possible to replace a video card slot? Its easier to replace the motherboard than to replace it. I'd verify that no lint or dust etc is in the contacts by using either canned air to blow it out or electrical contact cleaner which comes in a spray can that cleans contacts without leaving residue.

Bent or spread pins in a slot can happen although are uncommon. Its caused by rocking the card in the slot or rolling it out of the slot vs pulling straight up. If you have added rotation to insertion or removal of the video card vs pulling straight up or faught with it yanking or wiggling forcefully side to side or if the slot is misaligned to the case slot to where the video card is installed with pressure on it at an angle to the point that the card required flexing to install into the slot. These can all lead to this problem.

Even a highly skilled electronics tech would rather swap the board than service the slot unless the board is ultra expensive and its worth the time and effort to attempt to fix it.

*I'd clean the slot out and just USE a flashlight and a magnifying glass and inspect all the pins in the slot if you want to try to find the one pin that could be bent in an attempt to try to fix a possible bent pin issue. If you find a bent pin you may be able to correct it with a sewing needle as a tool to get in there and pry the pin back out so that it makes contact again unless the pin is crushed at a right angle into the slot or missing.

I got lucky with an old 72-pin EDO RAM slot on a Dell tower with Pentium 75Mhz CPU that had a bent pin that was giving the POST beep code for memory error when a stick was inserted into the 3rd slot of 4. This system I got for free dead under this failure condition from the local dump where it was upright next to a bunch of other electronic waste. When running on 2 sticks it ran fine, add the 3rd stick and system wouldnt run. I found out that somehow someone damaged a gold pin in the slot and so I was able to bend it back into position and then fully populate the 32MB of RAM 4 x 8MB EDO sticks and back up and running. This was back around 1999 when it was worth while to save a Pentium 75Mhz system.Ok, i will try inspecting the slot. I think that really might be the cause, as both graphics cards don't function properly and get very hot. I also carried my HD 5870 to a tech and asked them to inspect it, so i'll know if the card is damaged. Thanks for your help, nice story btwGot back my graphics card from tech, told me it's ram is damaged, and couldn't be repaired :/

Solve : working with files (corrected)?

Answer»

When working with files oin a FOLDER, the folder keeps reverting back to the start,(the first file).
Example: I have a folder with 150 files, all .jpg PICTURES. When I'm working with the files, usually
changing the names, or something as simple as that, when I finish with a file and want to go to the next, the folder reverts back to file number one. I then have to relocate the next file I want to work with. My QUESTION is, how do I stop this useless action? Personally, I can't imagine any logical reason for it. I'm using Windows 7, IE 9.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Solve : Dual monitor help?

Answer»

Hi, I have a Hewlett Packard pavilion elite computer with windows seven. My wife recently won a computer monitor from her office and I am trying to hook it up to the computer. I will give as much pertinent information as i can. My original display is an hp 2010i 1600x900 lcd monitor that is connected to the tower with an hdmi cable via a dvi adapter. the display I am trying to get to work is an hp 1940 and I am using a brand new rocket fish vga cable. When I go to the display options and try to set up the dual monitors it shows that there is a display via vga but nothing is showing up on the second monitor. when i HIT the power button is says no signal and goes to sleep. I've tried messing around with the RESOLUTION on both screens and nothing seems to work. When you boot the PC, does the BIOS show on both monitors?
The second monitor is always blank
Have you EVER had the new monitor work?
Try setting the new monitor as the only monitor and see if it comes on.
I tried setting the display to only show monitor two and it stayed blank. This might help: Guided Help: Dual monitor setup is easy in Windows 7!Sounds to me like the vid card doesn't support HDMI and VGA at the same time...
Just because you have multiple connectors doesn't mean it'll work...
VISIT the Card manuf. site for more info...Maybe hit "Windows button" and "P"
Or can you select the source on your second monitor? (If it has multiple connectors, eg VGA & DVI & HDMI)
If it has these try to connect it via HDMI or DVI and NOT VGA (D-sub).

Maybe this helps, but I'm not sure.

Anywho, so I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malwareto attempt and GET rid of the problem after doing so research online but that doesnt want to run and nothing is working for me. I've tried a lot of stuff but nothing has worked and the little bugger continues to play *censored* up!

I'm totally desperate at this point and as I am not skilled with computers it's a big challenge, for me anyways.

If anyone knows of ways other than the 'Malwarebytes Anti Malware' route that might work and are reliable, please help!

Solve : xcopy able to decrypt files??

Answer»

Is there any way to make xcopy decrypt the ENCRYPTED files when copying to an external drive? Not that i'm aware of...how were they encrypted in the 1st place ? ?xcopy /g

The /g is SAID to decrypt files. I haven't tried myself though.

That is, of course, only if they were encrypted with windows, not some 3rd party application.I think that I have tried /g already, but /g only enables xcopy to copy files to a destination which does not support encryption. This is not what I want, the external disk does support encryption and so the encrypted files are copied as encrypted. The problem is that it is a disk USED for backup and if the computer crashed I would probably have problems recovering the encrypted files to ANOTHER computer. Of course I can decrypt the files after copying, which is what I am doing now.

Of course I mean WINDOWS7 transparent encryption.

Solve : why I need to activate windows 7? I got a genuine windows 7 CD?

Answer» HI all,
I have been using windows XP for 5 years until one day my school teacher told us that we needed to use windows 7
in next academic term. So I spent some money for a new PC and genuine windows 7 untimate CD.
During the installation of windows 7, I was told to enter the serial, so I followed the instruction and did it.
But I was really angy with Microsoft whenI saw that my windows needed to active again in 30 days.
Why I was angry with Microsoft, because I had spent a thousand dollars for their products,
but what they gave me was a genuine windows CD with 30-days trial period.
I don't have any network connection so far, so how can I active my genuine windows?
I have got a genuine windows CD, but why I can only use it for 30days?

Please tell me what I can do.

Thank you.

KittyYou said you don't have a network connection, so the only other way is to activate by phone. Entering the Product key is NOT the same as Activation.

1) Click Start, and in the Search box type: slui.exe 4
2) Next press the 'ENTER' key
3) Select your 'Country' from the LIST.

6) Explain your problem clearly to the support person.

Activate using the telephone

If Windows isn't able to activate online, you'll have the option to activate Windows 7 using an automated phone system.

Open Windows Activation by clicking the Start BUTTON Picture of the Start button, right-clicking Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking Activate Windows now.‌

Click Show me other ways to activate.

Type your Windows 7 product key, and then click Next.

Click Use the automated phone system. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the location nearest you from the drop-down list, and then click Next.

Call one of the available phone numbers listed. An automated system will guide you through the activation process.

When prompted, enter the installation ID that's listed on your screen into your phone's keypad.

Write down the confirmation ID that the phone system gives you.

Type the confirmation ID into the space provided under Step 3 in the activation dialog, click Next, and then follow the instructions.

If activation isn't successful, stay on the line to be transferred to a customer SERVICE representative who can assist you.

Solve : Computer becomes unresponsive?

Answer»

Hi, About once every TWO weeks my computer becomes unresponsive. No pointer response, no keyboard, and obviously the task manager wont come up. Nothing... The only thing that works is the soft restart button. Sometimes it shuts the computer off and sometimes it restarts the computer. (iv never tried the hard on/off button - im sure it would work just fine)

Im not sure where to even begin trouble shooting (here ) The computer in question is not often connected to the net and its a Homebuilt (by me) I7 quad core running CHROME, 16GB of RAMM, Window 7, 64BIT OS, A 32 bit audio program that i use 99% of the time and a 64 bit audio program that im just learning to use. It also has Microsoft Security Essentials on it.

The unresponsive behavior happens when im using my 32bit audio program, which is no surprise since thats all i really use that computer for.

This computer ( a second computer-it a dell, inspiron 520 i THINK) is nearly identical to the one im having trouble with in terms of programs on it and its function, except it doesnt have the 64 bit audio program installed on it. its a core 2 duo E4600 @2.4 Ghz. 4GB of RAMM....and this computer doesnt have quite all of the plugins the other one does because it doesnt have the power to run them well.....I CARE for this computer very little and i dont treat it well, Its ALWAYS connected to the net, and yet it runs perfectly...The OS and 32 bit audio program are identical on both computers.

So, im just not sure of how to troubleshoot this. Where do i start looking? Is it likely a hardware issue? Wondering why it all works fine for the computer with lesser power.

Anyway, thanks for any consideration you may have given to my dilemma.I'd run this 32-bit program in XP compatability mode on the Windows 7 64-bit system that is acting up with it, and see if that fixes the issue.

Solve : Cannot boot into Win7 installer?

Answer»

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit but i can't get the INSTALLER to load.
I have access to a Xubuntu install and a OS X install.
The original hard drive Windows 7 was installed on stopped working completely. So, I've bought a brand new one.
I followed the steps I did the first time I installed Windows 7 - converting the iso to and img with OS X's hdiutil and the dd COMMAND to burn it to a USB.
This time I would just get a "please insert proper boot MEDIA" error.
I went to my Xubuntu computer (it's used like a chromebook - i'm not a big linux guy) and tried WinUSB.
These USB keys lead to a screen that had a flashing underscore a few spaces from the top of the screen.
It dawned on me that the first thing I did when I installed windows the first time was update the bios. So I tried flashing a few different BIOS versions, but none of them made a difference>
I really need help - I can't think of anything else to try
Thank you very much!
TL;DR
Cannot boot into Win7 installer. OS X made USB keys show "insert proper boot media" - Ubuntu made keys show "flashing underscore" - Tried 3 different BIOS versions. Win7 -has- worked here before...
*Intel Core i7-3770 Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz LGA 1155
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H Motherboard
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650
Corsair 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3
Corsair 750W*I'd borrow a friends Windows 7 OEM disc to install from if available and use your key with it. Sounds like the image went bad through a conversion process. My Windows 7 3 license family package came with 32 and 64 bit Windows 7 OEM discs, and you will want the 32 or 64 bit to match the version you will be running.

Solve : Registry Code 19?

Answer»

So, yesterday my COMPUTER INSTALLED updates like it does every MONTH. It usually has some problems booting AFTERWARDS but usually works itself out. But yesterday, after updating, my keyboard is not working. The number lock light is on and it is plugged in just fine. I went to the Device Manager to FIND that the keyboard (HID Keyboard Device) driver was missing and in the status it said Registry Code 19 or something along those lines. I found a fix on Google that involved deleting LowerFilters from the keyboard in the registry (regedit). This fixed the missing driver issue, but the keyboard still doesn't work. It says the keyboard is ready to use. I've tried two other keyboards. It works in the boot menus and BIOS. And yes, I have done System Restore, twice. Also, as previously stated, the number lock light is lit, but when I unplug the keyboard and plug it in again, it doesn't light up. I have also tried other USB ports and changing various keyboard settings. I have no idea what is causing this. Any help would be nice.

Also not sure if this is in the right category.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Solve : "Inject" a new user profile onto an hdd with a corrupt one??

Answer»

Hi, over the past couple of days I've been having a problem in which I can no longer boot to the desktop on my most used OS (I have a total of 4 HDD's on my computer, each with a separate INSTALLATION of Windows 7). I'm unable to fix the problem despite rigorous attempts to scan for bad sectors/startup repairs (sfc /scannow has also proven futile). When I do try to boot to desktop, bios and post blaze on through like normal and the OS hangs at the welcome screen and FLASHES occasionally to a black screen briefly then resumes the other ONE. Also, the word "welcome" is not visible and when I force power off (my only choice), I'm met with a brief display of a strange arrangement of shapes and symbols. The same thing happens when I try to boot into safe mode. I'm able to move the mouse freely during this odd hanging without the loading blue circle, and my HDD light flashes normally, indicating reading of some SORT. I'm convinced this is because of user profile corruption, but if you feel like that is not the case, please feel free to provide any useful information you have on solving the issue. I cannot do an in place upgrade as I'm unable to boot to the desktop. I do not wish to re-install windows and I'm certain there is a technological cure for this mishap.. One theory I had in mind is that if I could somehow create a new user profile for the affected drive using one of the other OS' I have connected, this would be solved at the welcome screen, as I could then choose to load into the new profile instead of the OS automatically picking the infected one and locking up. Another theory is that perhaps I could use one of the other OS' to perform an in place upgrade for the affected drive..

So, as the title suggests, is there a WAY for me to inject the affected drive with a fresh user profile using a separate HDD? Again, they're all connected to the same motherboard, so keep in mind that I do have access to all of the files on the affected drive, so this does seem relatively simple.. I just haven't come across a way to do it.

Also, if the profile thing isn't possible, could I some how repair the affected OS from one of the working OS'? I have the installation disk..

Thanks in advance!Quote

I'm met with a brief display of a strange arrangement of shapes and symbols
This leads me to believe the issue may be with your display adapter. It would also explain the black screen flickering, and missing image elements (such as welcome text).

Solve : Erasing a backup Windows partition?

Answer»

When I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 few years ago, I allocated the PARTITION D: to keep a copy of Windows XP in case things went wrong, i.e. dual boot Win 7 in C: and Win XP in D:.

So now years after, I barely USE the Win XP on my PC as I have an old laptop running XP.

Can I just delete everything on the D: DRIVE through Windows Explorer, or I need to format the partition?

Thanks. You don't have to format it, you can get away with just deleting the data.Hi QUANTOS,

I tried to do that but unable to delete those system folders i.e. Documents and Settings, Program Files, Qoobox, WINDOWS.
It says I need permission to perform this action.Try deleting it from Safe Mode, or try CCleaner(just do NOT run the registry portion). You could ALSO delete the partition...re-create it and then format it...Quote from: patio on March 08, 2014, 07:47:39 AM

Solve : Issues related to profile corruption, possible HDD/SDD issues??

Answer»

Alright. About, LETS say, two weeks ago, I couldn't log in to my laptop. First attempt brought me to the laptops "default" profile, which itself was giving errors about a certain graphics engine failing to start. I shut the sytem down and turned it back on, figuring it was just a once off issue. After that, I WOULD continuously get an error that the "logon service was not available". After researching around for a bit, I learned that the cause was most likely profile corruption. Thankfully my laptop had created a restore point three days before, so I restored to that point and thought no more of the issue, considering it just a freak chance.

However, today, I had a similar issue. This time around there were no graphics errors and a simple restart fixed it right away, but before I RESTARTED I got a weird error, something about not being able to access the Toshiba HDD/SDD. Clicking the alert, I got a message box saying "dwRet=12", and then another error saying "Unable to get disk information, can not use the alert feature".

My laptop is a (close to) 5 YEAR old Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7. I'm starting to get a little worried, how should I go about preventing this from happening again in the near future? You want to go to the website of your HD manufacturer, download their diagnostic UTILITY, burn it to cd and run it.

Solve : Game freeze?

Answer»

hi there, i just started playing League Of Legends. i realized that sometimes, the game freeze when i am playing for just a few moments and continue normally then again and again... AND when i am playing, there is a voice to tell who killed who, i realized that the voice say the sentence in a strange way like : You..you..you..kil..kill.kill..ed..ed.. ed..bo..bo..bo..t..tt..ttt. it really botheres me.
Any ideas to stop this ?!System info would be helpful for this. What is the system make/model/specs or if custom built the specs of the build?

I'd run a memtest on this system. Also I have seen this happen when either the computer is struggling to play a game such as a really old computer or a system that is overclocked to the max that runs fast and everything is good except for the audio or video gets choppy. Other times I have seen this are when playing a game and also performing some other process that has the CPU pegged at 100%, so what does your CPU look like for usage when this is happening. Lastly I have seen this happen when a CPU is overheating and the system is thermal THROTTLING the processor to try to get it to cool and it messes with the games ability to function in perfect time, and instead gets choppy.

May......bbe....tha...ts...how ....the....voi...ce acts....what is a memset ?? and how do i get system info ?? and how could i see my CPU ?

yes, Patio , that is how the voice acts.

P.S : SORRY but i DONT know much about computers Quote

what is a memset ?? and how do i get system info ?? and how could i see my CPU ?

If this is a store bought computer you just need to specify the make/model and we can google the stats, however if it is custom built and not an off the shelf type of computer from a store let me know and I will show you how to look up info.

Its called memtest not memset.... You can download this iso and burn in to a CD or DVD, or create a bootable thumb drive. Making a bootable CD or DVD is easiest for you. If you dont know how to do this, I will contact a friend or someone who can help you burn this disc. You then boot the system off of this disc and let it run for a few hours. You will see how many times it passed or failed the test. There should be ( NO ) failed memory addresses. If there are then you need to REPLACE your RAM (memory) or find the 1 stick that is causing the others to trip up and remove that from the group. Although its kind of rare to have a mismatched same make/model memory stick, it happens from time to time that a stick doesnt play well with others. This same stick that doesnt play well with others will run just fine if its by itself, however due to timing offset etc you end up with 1 stick that trips up the rest. http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

Sometimes the fix if say you had 8GB of memory and are a gamer is to remove one of the 2GB memory sticks to drop you to 6GB etc and SEND the 2GB stick in for warranty replacement as defective. They ship you a new stick and you install it and problem is solved. If memory stick is not covered by a warranty, then you buy a new stick or just get by with 6GB as an example; not knowing what you have for hardware and stats.

You can find CPU/memory amount by going to START -> Control Panel -> System and looking at the info there. You can then write it down and share it here.

You can also find out info about all hardware by going to: START -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager ( Then click on an item to explore its properties etc... just dont mess around with drivers or disabling hardware here or you can mess something up. Just report back info about CPU(Processors), RAM(memory), and Video Card stats as well as if you see any yellow ( ! ) marks or red ( x ) report them here.

Solve : Windows Easy transfer?

Answer»

When I transfer data from my old computer (Vista Home premium) to the other old computer (Vista business) does the data stay the same in the old computer? I KNOW this is a stupid question but I'm GOING to be using both so I'm paranoid. You should STILL make a BACKUP, but YES the data in the old machine should be unaffected.I have carbonite (saved me twice). Thanks.

Solve : Internet Explorer Prob.?

Answer»

Hi there gentlemen ...I have a feeling this TOPIC has been covered somewhere but can't find it lads. I am starting to get web pages that won't open in my browser (IE) or it takes a very long time to load them. What is my problem here please lads??? Thee are too many possible things that could do this.

  • Bad internet connection.
  • Too many Windows open.
  • Two AV programs conflicting.
  • Hardware problem
  • Bad web sites.
  • Something else.
Have you tried another Browser?
Maybe Chrome?
Install Chrome from Google.
Does that help any?
Hi there Geek mate.! .....Well I have also got GOOGLE CHROME and I get a better performance from that connection than IE. I am not sure which version of IE that I have mate. There is a way to find out I think.

I don't leave any windows open, nor do I run more than one virus protector at a time ..so that's two down here. I try to keep my start-up FOLDER as lean as I can, which is a full time job these days. Try deleting browsing history in IE and see whether that improves its performance. Well I have just run C Cleaner soybean and there has been some improvement, however I am still having to keep 'recovering webpage', which is annoying! What is the latest version of IE and how do I check what version I have please? The latest version is 11. To see what version you have, click on Help and select About Internet Explorer. You'll not believe this but there is no 'help' on my IE taskbar here! I suspect you do not have your Menu bar display. Right click somewhere at the top of your browser and click on Menu bar in the right-click menu. Help is on the Menu bar.

Alternatively, without displaying the Menu bar, you can click the Tools icon/button at the right end at the top of IE and select About Internet Explorer from that drop-down menu. HONEST guys this is what my homepage looks like ...no HELP file anywhere??

Apparently, you have your browser in full-screen mode. If you computer is a desktop system, hit F11 on your keyboard to put your browser back in normal display mode. Then, you'll see the top part of the browser, where you'll find access to the screen that shows the version of IE you have.

If your computer is a laptop, you may need to hold the fn key down while pressing F11. The F-keys on laptops usually have dual functions and you need to use the fn key in conjunction with an F-key to MAKE certain F-keys on a laptop do the same thing as the F-keys on a stand-alone keyboard on a desktop PC. No soybean my friend, this shot was TAKEN with F11 down mate Fn +F11...

Solve : How Do I Remove This Program?

Answer»

Hello, I recently purchased a PC with Windows 7 Pro. I installed a program that will not run in this version of windows. I tried to uninstall it but the program is not listed in the Installed Programs menu. There is no link to uninstall the program in the program's folder. In regedit, the program is listed under hotkeycurrentuser-Software but not under hotkeylocalmachine-anywhere! How do I get rid of this program? Please advise. What program ? ?MGI Photosuite. It's an older program but it ran FINE in Windows Vista so I thought it might run in Windows 7 as well. It doesn't.

Hello, I recently purchased a PC with Windows 7 Pro. I installed a program that will not run in this version of windows. I tried to uninstall it but the program is not listed in the Installed Programs menu.
Have you looked in Programs and Features? Open Control Panel to access the Programs and Features panel. Yes I have. The program is not listed in Programs & Features. It is a Windows 98 program, but as I said, it ran fine under Vista. I don't want to have to restore my computer to a date before I installed that program because I just finished moving all of my music from my iPod back into iTunes, installed .net framework, etc. If it had occurred to me to restore my computer as soon as I learned that I couldn't uninstall MGI Photosuite, I would have. I'm hoping there is another way to remove the program. What if I just deleted all the folders related to the program? It doesn't appear to have installed correctly anyway. Might that work? I haven't installed my camera yet or ANYTHING related to that photo program.
Attached is a photo of the registry entry for this program. As you can see in the photo, it is listed under Hotkeycurrentuser/software/MGI. It is not listed anywhere else in the registry. Would it be safe for me to delete all of MGI's files and these registry keys?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]You can go ahead and delete the program's folders. There may be some stray dlls left in the system32 folder but they won't cause any problems by being there. You could run something like CCleaner to try to remove the UNUSED registry entries as well.Thank you, I'll try that. Revo un-installer should get rid of any stray entries...Thank you Patio, but Revo Uninstaller cannot find the program. Neither can Norton which keeps a record of every program installed on my computer. So, I'm thinking that MGI did not install, so removing all the files and registry should be ok.
Stroller mentioned using CC Cleaner to remove leftover registry keys. How safe is that program? I need a recommendation for a registry cleaner that doesn't delete keys that are not safe to remove.

-Running Windows 8
-Ive attached pictures to show the image quality I am seeing.

Hope you can help in some way but if not, thanks for LOOKING at my post anyway!

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]If you have the ability to TRY out a different monitor on the system that would be helpful as for if its found to be the monitor then thats one thing, but if its found to be the computers video card causing this than thats another.

I assume you have the latest drivers installed for that sweet video card?

Solve : Videos will play once, then not at all...?

Answer»

I am running Windows 7, Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-321OM CPU @ 2.50 GHz 2.50 GHz, 8.00 GB RAM, 64-bit operating system. My husband uses this Dell laptop and uses it mostly on Facebook. There are lots of little videos to WATCH that his friends post just for him to see, but sometimes (rarely) they will play, however, he mostly GETS a black SCREEN but can hear the video playing. I'm sure there is probably some kind of setting for this but I don't know what it is. I use Vista desktop and have tried to fix his Windows 7 laptop. I don't know what I change, but the first time he goes to play a video, it WORKS, after that, it's black again. I wish I knew what I changed so I could tell you, but I don't have the slighest idea. I'm not that computer savvy, plus I can't figure out Windows 7 to save my life! Can anyone help? I'm sure it's an easy fix, just not easy for me! Thanks!

I was trying to transfer files the other day and the computer asked me for a ID and a PASSWORD for my computer. I bought this thing in 2005 and don't remember what I used. I'm not TALKING about a user ID and password. Is there anywhere I can retrieve it? My o.s is Vista.Thee is some INFORMATION in the CH archives about this.
In general, the FORUM does not help people with passwords problems because of security problems.
Can you boot you computer in safe mode?
In safe mode there might be a user with a blank password.https://www.google.com/search?q=lost+admin+password+windows+7&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb

Solve : Autoruns Services Section filled with yellow entries?

Answer»

Hi all

A friend accidentally installed a virus on her computer when trying to update the latest Flash Player. I helped her get the virus off, and the computer seems ok, but when I used the Sysinternals Autoruns program, the entire Services section is filled with yellow, and all the entries show as "file not found". HOWEVER, I've checked the registry entires AND the location of the files in Windows, and everything seems to be fine. There are a few entries that Autoruns shows in the Services section that AREN'T in yellow, but when I click on the properties, Autoruns claims "file not found". I tried deleting a few of the entries, but on reboot I got a BsOD, so had to use "last known good config". So I don't get why Autoruns claims that all the stuff in the Services section is missing, yet the computer seems to work fine? I run an SFC / SCANNOW - it found & fixed some problems but not all (haven't checked the log yet: I hate looking through that log!). Chkdsk also was unremarkable. All very weird. Any tips on where to GO from here appreciated.

Thanks
Peter

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]How Malware Hides As A Service In the end it turned out that the 3 viruses that were initially found weren't all the viruses: there was a syshost.exe virus left lurking in the system32\drivers folder that I could only get out by entering the CMD via the W7 boot DVD and deleting with the DEL COMMAND - I also had to manually delete the Registry entries it left behind (there were 2). After that, all the yellow entries were gone and everything showed up normally, and the PC operation returned to normal (including the USB ports, which I discovered along the way would allow a flash drive to connect once, then not again in any port without a reboot - that was weird). I did some more checking with various scanners. That's a new one for me...
