Solve : How do I change email w/Windows Live back to Windows Mail??

Answer»

I downloaded updates and after I did, whenever I am on a web page I WANT to send to a friend, I right-click and now it says Email with Windows Live. Before, when I right-clicked, it just said email page or link. It does not do that now. I've been told here on this forum that updates will NOT change your computer, but I beg to differ as this has certainly changed. Can someone explain this to me and also get me back to just right-clicking and it COMES up simply as email page or link?

Thanks so much in advance!

The latest version now is 11. That's what you should have if you are getting your Windows updates, as you say you are.

Is your OS Windows Vista or Windows 7? Before the updates, I gather, by the title of you topic here, that you were Windows Mail. That implies your OS is Vista, since it came with Windows Mail. Please confirm the details here.

By "Windows Live", do you mean Windows Live Mail? Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are separate programs. Again, Windows Vista came with Windows Mail. Windows 7 came with no email client/program, but Windows 7 users can download and install Windows Live Mail for free from Microsoft. So, do you now have Windows Live Mail also installed on your computer, in addition to Windows Mail? I'm running Vista. How do I find out what version of Explorer I have? I am somewhat computer stupid - I have a laptop that has Windows 7 and the only way I can find Internet Options is by going on line and go to the little tool in the top left CORNER! The computer I use is Vista, Windows Mail. However, when I right-click it says E-mail with Windows Live. When I tried that, a window came up asking me to sign in and I have never used Windows Live, so I tried to set up the thing and just KEPT getting error messages. Eventually, I want to learn how to make my laptop with Windows Live (that I've never used) be compatable with Windows Mail or vice versa. I am not certain I WOULD do it correctly, plus I want to put some of my files on this computer onto the laptop, so I will probably hire someone who comes to your house and set up all this stuff for me. On my laptop, I did not download and install anything, Windows Live was already there. On the Vista, I only have Windows Mail which is why I am getting confused about why it says Windows Live when I right-click a page I want to email to someone. I hope I've given you enough information. In Explorer clik Help/About on the file menu...it'll tell you what you haveGood gracious, I'm using Explorer 9! I guess I should update to Explorer 11, huh?

Apparently, IE9 is the end of the road for Windows Vista. Reference: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/internet-explorer-ie10-vista-windows,12580.htmlQuote from: debby on April 26, 2014, 03:31:08 PM

I have not used IE9 for quite some time so I can only refer to IE11 and it might be different from IE9 in this respect. With IE11, right clicking on a web page also displays the option to E-mail with Windows Live. I believe this applies to all IE users, even if they have not created a live.com email account.

If IE9 is like IE10/11 in this respect, you still have the option to send a web page by clicking on File (on the IE menu bar), pointing to Send, and selecting Page by e-mail.

Solve : Windows Update Not Working?

Answer»

I have a new laptop (one month old), and I have just noticed that windows update has never worked. The laptop came with Windows 8 installed, but as it was a monstrosity, I downgraded to Windows 7.

If I try to manually check for updates I receive the error: In fact now the window just freezes when I OPEN windows udate.

I tried Microsoft's magic utility from their website to solve the problem but all it did was list the problems TWICE stating that the problems were both fixed and not fixed. All the correct services (ACCORDING to Microsoft) are running but I still get the error message.

...
This may be the problem. How did you downgrade? Where or how did you get the Windows 7 DVD? Did the product key come with the computer?
You may have t o contact MS DIRECTLY for the bet answer.

From my own limited experience, I did not get Windows 7 updates until I loaded a version that I could authenticate with MS. Clean Install from a WIN7 home edition CD (Key on the box), the laptop only came with a Windows 8 key. Fortunatly this laptops predecessor came with Vista, which also had to go for sanity reasons.See if this would help check of any corrupt or disabled services.

Download then run Farbar Service Scanner and checkmark all boxes.
Click Scan and then a Notepad text will open. Copy-Paste the report on your next reply.

Solve : Folder Comments?

Answer»

Hello all,
Am new to batch files. I am looking for a script to get all the details of a partculart folder. Below is an example.
1. I have an excel with list of folders inside a same director (Like: D:/Testing)
2. Inside D:/Testing there are 10 folders
3. So I need to get the details like author, comments, last modified, date created for all the listed folders in an excel or text file

Please help me!

Thanks,
AdithyaMetadata is what your looking into: http://superuser.com/questions/363278/is-there-a-way-to-get-file-metadata-from-the-command-lineI have gone THRU the link you have provided but I am not looking for the properties of a file or exe or application. I am searching for details of a whole folder. My requriement is to fill the comments available for a given list of folders in an excel. Please help!Sorry I mis UNDERSTOOD what you were trying to accomplish when I read #3 on your list.

The only tools I am aware of that can get folder info to the extent that you require are Windows based tapping into API's etc and not run from command prompt.

Karenware has this tool that is free to use. Its normally used for printing directory info, but I BELIEVE you can specify what info you want, target a directory or directory with sub directories in it and have it output all sorts of info along the lines you are looking for.

http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp

Quote

No more fumbling with My Computer or Windows Explorer, wishing you could print information about all your files. Karen's Directory Printer can print the name of every file on a drive, along with the file's size, date and time of last modification, and attributes (Read-Only, Hidden, System and Archive)! And now, the list of files can be sorted by name, size, date created, date last modified, or date of last access.

I am at a work computer right now and cant play with it to give exact examples, but I have used this tool in the past to print to PDF the directory tree of what is contained on external hard drives so that if I need a file I can search the PDF's and know which drive to connect and where the file is located that I need to copy from it to work with etc. There are all sorts of features and this might be the solution for you. From memory I am not sure if it gives a CSV option or not to delimit the data and use it within excel. But its worth downloading and playing around with it to see if its what you need. There is a save to disk tab that may have the ability to save the data as a CSV.

If you specifically need this to be run from command prompt, i can have a moderator move this to the DOS section. Please do not CREATE a new thread in the DOS section if this is the case. Moves happen quickly if needed.

Solve : Windows Live Mail uninstal problem?

Answer»

If I were to uninstal Windows Live Mail - would I lose all my emails? Is there a better mail program than WLM - and if I were to instal another program, could I import my emails?I believe uninstalling WLM will not remove your messages from your hard drive. Still, I suggest you backup your messages before you uninstall WLM. To locate your messages, see http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/148663-windows-7-emails-where-they-stored.html

Unless you have a specific reason to uninstall WLM and switch to some other email program, I suggest sticking with WLM. I used it for many MONTHS but have been using Microsoft Outlook 2007 for the last 6 months or so because I started using a Windows 8 LAPTOP for email and I installed my full Office 2007 package (Word, Excel, etc.) on the laptop.

If you do switch to another email program, you can probably import the WLM messages. Most email software provides import capability. Quote

I have been having a lot of problems with WLM and THOUGHT it best to reinstal.

However 2 days ago I installed thunderbird, and it copied all my emails over (WELL I think all of them) even tho I didnt request it. Both sites ask me to be the default, but I am still using wlm. Eventually I copied all my hotmail emails to a folder in another address, so I could ATTEND to them later.

I'm not confident to back up and retrieve the msgs, if I knew thunderbird had ALL my emails, I would attempt the uninstal, and then re-instal .. I have far too many emails to risk losing them as most are family history related.

Solve : Program blocked by group policy?

Answer»

Hello,

I have recently started experiencing this issue on my Windows 7 x64 HP notebook. I first experienced this with winrar. Whenever I try extracting from a rar, it gives me this error: This program is blocked by group policy. For more information, contact your system administrator. I then moved to 7zip and it works fine. I then downloaded utorrent, does not open, gives me the same error, no harm done. Now the issue is when I want to uninstall the program, it gives me a similar error and wont let me uninstall it. The error: You do not have SUFFICIENT access to uninstall uTorrent. Please contact your system administrator. I am the only user on this computer and it is not connected to a LAN network. I have tried USING Revo Uninstaller with no results. I also INSTALLED (and uninstalled) add gpedit. From: http://drudger.deviantart.com/art/Add-GPEDIT-msc-215792914.

I cant even find the program FILES for utorrent for me to delete. Please help!

I deleted the settings from %appdata%\utorrent

The second time I tried opening uTorrent my computer froze on me, no ctrl alt del results, no mouse, nothing had to force shut down frmo the power button. Was this computer ever joined to a corporate network, or bought used in which it may have been owned by a business in the past, and hasn't been rebuilt clean install of OS since?

To me it seems as though it inherrited a group policy that even when offline is active. This is common with computers that were joined to a network with group policies that are no longer connected to that network.I bought this from HP brand new. I did connect to a university network very often about a year back. I don't access that network any more. The university network must have added this GP to prevent problems from joined private systems. One thing you can try is create a new user account with admin privileges on this computer. Then log off your main account and log in as that new account. Then see if this problem remains. I have seen in the past where GP remnants remain in a user profile and creating a new clean user account which creates a new profile fixes the problem.

If this fixes this, then you simply copy over the info from your old profile to the new profile and continue to use the new profile. After you know that all important data was successfully moved you then can delete the old profile and just continue to run with this new profile/account.

If the problem doesnt go away then its a global GP in the registry. Fixing this would be easiest if you had the system recovery set to build the system back up to factory settings like the day you first turned it on out of the box, however you would want to back up your data to an external hard drive or USB flash drive before doing this to avoid loss of data. Some system recovery sets allow for you to perform a repair which will keep your data safe and will just install the OS clean again. If you use this route, I would still back up important data first... I never take chances with important data. I have lost data in the past by thinking nothing would go wrong with a repair system recovery VS a full clean install on an old Acer Pentium 200Mhz many years ago with Windows 95. Since then I play it safe with my data and suggest to others to do the same to avoid loss. The only way for you to bypass this issue is to create a user account with full access or reformat the laptop since you said it came from the university so some policies they have implemented on that machine are still working and security measures are still up and protecting the system. Thanks for both your replies, it was actually a very easy fix. A friend looked at some logs and quickly realized the GP was due to CryptoPrevent that I had installed on my computer. Whitelisting winrar or temporarily disabling cryptoprevent solved the issue. Thanks. Thanks for sharing the solution here in case anyone else ever runs into a similar issue they will now find this and say... Hey! I have that installed and maybe thats the problem and they may have a solution thanks to your follow up with the solution that you posted here.

Solve : no access to certain web site features?

Answer»

Hello,

a few days ago i had to reinstall my windows VISTA because i had no internet access at all.
There's a dutch 'webcammmed' radio programme, that i cant watch since. When i go to the main site, and the programme archive, i cannot watch the items. INSTEAD i get a no access message.

I have VLC-player installed and it worked FINE prior to new installment of vista.
Any ideas what i could do?

The web site in question is this one:
http://www.obalive.nl/default.aspx?lIntEntityId=921

Vel, ach du liber!

I can't make it work either, probably because I don't read and understand 'Danish'.
Except for the danish I like to have with my morning coffee!

But the site comes up just fine.

I PLAY and watch whatever I like by adding the "K-Lite Codec Pack" to my Windows Media Player.
Any audio or video file plays just fine, without any special players.

Just a thought!

Shadow Thanks. It's worth a try.

Although i don't THINK it's a codec or player thing, because in that case i would have gotten a different error message.

Solve : start up menu?

Answer»

can someone please refresh my brain and tell me how i get to my start up menu in windows millenium
thank u very muchWhat exactly do you mean by start up menu? Do you mean a login screen, or the "Start" menu?oops sry the place u go to change what opens on start up
thank UIF I'm remembering CORRECTLY, Windows ME is the same as XP and multiple others for that items that open at start.

just go to start --> programs --> startup

Drop any shortcuts you want to run at startup in there. If it is the same as 98se, hold down the Windows key down, tap the R key and let both go(or go to Start>Run), and type msconfig and hit enter. Select Selective Startup up and hit the Startup tab up top. Then deselect (uncheck) of the THINGS you know that are unneeded. Be careful about what you deselect.

You can also type C:\Windows StartMenu in the same Run command. Then look for the Startup folder. *note*
the above also works for vista and xp in case some guys wanted to know...
for vista, THOUGH you dont have run...just click on start and type msconfig on the little bar and press enter And if you want a better menu in Vista (or XP), especially if you like the classic mode (and have a lot of apps)., i found this FREEWARE to be a blessing

Solve : Vista Home Premium not booting.?

Answer»

Vista Home Premium will no longer boot in normal mode on my HP Pavilion a6402.uk

When I boot VIA normal mode, it just stops on the boot screen after a few SECONDS of HDD activity, the bar just loops.

I can boot fine into Safe Mode and into Ubuntu (Which is INSTALLED via Wubi, so it's on a HDD file in the Windows partition).

I did a boot log of the normal boot, but it's too big to include in this message, so I have uploaded it here:
http://wyattsoft.webs.com/ntbtlog.txt

My system specification is:
MODEL: HP Pavilion a6402.uk
Mobo: MS-7525 (HP Name: Boston-GL6)
RAM: 2 x 1GB DDR2 SDRAM
HDD: 250GB (I think it's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10)
Graphics: NVIDIA 9500GT 1GB
Windows: Vista Home Premium 32bit
Anti Virus: Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Internet: AOL 2MB via PPPoE (NIC on-board mobo)

Before this happened I was defragmenting my HDD with JkDefrag. I forgot to exclude the Wubi file (which the MS Defrag API seems to have issues with defragmenting) and so the API freezes, which also has the effect of Windows can't shut down because it can't end the API. Therefore I have to HARD reboot the PC.

All help appreciated.

DanAfter restoring a registry backup (Before CCleaner cleaned up the registry) and doing a CHKDSK, it's working now.

"I maximum my volume backgroud for them to hear but they didn't unfortunately"

So do they hear you or not? You're not making any sense.

Solve : 32bit vs 64bit?

Answer»

Just built a new machine (for gaming & office work) which i'll be setting up for dual boot with a copy of vista and xp.

So...
Hate to SOUND like a complete idiot, but in gaming terms why does EVERYONE i speak to recomend the 32bit windows vista/xp, surely the 64bit is better, is there no support from the majority of games, would none of them work if i put 64bit vista onto my machine?
And would there be any conflicts if i put 64bit vista and 32bit xp

64 bit Windows supports more RAM and offers potentially better performance.
However,a s the majority of programs are still 32 bit you will not see much difference in speed.
Drivers can be difficult to FIND and some programs don't work - I speak from experience.
However, if you check every driver and every program you want and make sure it is compatible, you could use XP or Vista X64 if you wanted.
There would be no conflicts from installing any combination of Vista or XP 32 or 64 bit as long as you INSTALLED them in order from oldest to newest, on a separate PARTITION for each.Much appreciated. If you want to run a 64 bit version of XP or Vista you need a machine that is 64 bit. This means your hardware will have to be 64 bit for you got the performance of a 64 bit OS.

You can run a 32 bit OS on another partition within the same machine.

My advice would be to pick one and go with it. If you want to game than stay with a 32 bit OS. It would be much easier in the long run to enjoy your games.

Solve : Can it work on Vista??

Answer»

Hi guys i really need your help.

I downloaded a software trial for a program from a website. The program is a CAD program for fashion. However when i click the setup.exe option i get this message:

HARDLOCK.SYS version too old.

Then i click on ok which prompts this message:

The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH.

I looked AROUND and found that it might actually be a Windows NT program. Is that so? If it is, is there ANYWAY to get to work on vista by installing a patch for example or something?

Have tried changing compatibility mode in properties but didnt work.
Im running vista home edition 32 Bit.

Please help.

regards
Hi everyone,

Never mind, i got it to work. For anyones future reference or if anyone gets the same error message here is what I did.

For the error message
HARDLOCK.SYS version too old.

I got rid of it by downloading a new version of the hardlock driver. Oddly enough I found what I NEEDED in a website that provides software tools for the mining industry. Here is a link

http://www.rocscience.com/downloads/hardlock.asp.

To get rid of this message:

The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH.

All I had to do was DOWNLOAD new copies of the AUTOEXEC.NT and CONFIG.NT from here:

http://www.4shared.com/file/39996729/b3c6083/AUTOEXEC.html?s=1 and just search for the other files you might need.

Took me a while to figure out but for someone whos not computer savvy, i think I did good

I hope this will help anyone else in the future.

Solve : Restoring Vista Up button?

Answer»

Though it is by no means a major issue, i miss the Up button in Navigating folders. I am aware that you can hold down the Alt key and use the up or down arrow to so, but as one who does a lot of navigating between 4 partitions and many folders, I find the up button not only faster (esp. with my stiff fingers), but with it i can nuke the Navigation pane to allow for smaller Windows (the last size of which i find Vista forgets), which i often like in order to do place folders side by side. A 5.00 shareware app offers to restore it, but i would think someone could come up with a registry fix for that, or at enable least Alt and the mouse wheel to do it.

You may check THIS
Check plug-ins download, too.Broni, that is a real good addition, thanks! Gets the up button BACK and far more, but the page you sent me to is important to understand how to install it, plus experimentation.

Thank God for those that make it possible to customize, and for the ability to do so. I will send the Qtabs people a little donation.

While i am on the subject, as one that is looks for speed, i found a discontinued Copernic app called Winkey handy in hotkeying launching of folders and apps. http://freewarewiki.com/WinKey. And as i miss the ability to see folder sizes in Vista (via an add on), i found one called TREE size free that works on Vista, though not as handy http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml

Another idea would be to make the Task Bar also more like the TABS in Firefox and be able to move them around, and it’s Colorful Tabs ext make each one a different color. And also to be able to Save Sessions. I only found that add-on, and I'm still in playing with it, stages, but it looks good.Doesn't the new way the path is displayed in the address bar eliminate the need for an "up" button? No, not entirely in function and certainly not in speed. For instance, opening up a sub folder in a folder in the 2nd HD; the down arrow farthest left (next to the >) lists Previous locations, the 2nd arrow lists My Computer and the Desktop folders; the 3rd arrow lists the folders in the drive i am in; sometimes a 4th arrow lists the sub folder of the folder i am in; the 5th arrow lists previous locations, including the Internet ones. To go immediately up to the next folder, i would have to click the third arrow, find the folder i want, and click on it, but if i want to go up higher than that drive means the first. All such options are useful, but just clicking on the up arrow is faster and more institutive.

You can use the navigation pane for navigating, but this means an even wider window, and as Vista does not ALWAYS remember Windows sizes after rebooting (remember each.. is checked), i prefer going without it.

Of course, if all i had was one partition on one drive, rather than 4 or more, or had little need to often navigate, then the speed of the up button may not be so desired, but it's no big deal anyway.

Solve : Windows Vista Startup Repair Error?

Answer»

I'm running Vista on my COMPUTER and DUE to some problems I've been having, I wanted to check if all the files were in order. Accordingly, I did the Windows Vista Startup REPAIR thing off my CD's bootlist.

I get this error:

No OS Files Found on Disk

Repair action: Partition table repair

Result: Failed. Error code = ox490

Time taken = 4430 MS

Now, my Vista works. It is certainly INSTALLED. I tried running from the Vista RECOVERY section on my HD and even that gives this error. So there are OS files and they should be working.

What could be the cause of this? No one has any insight?

Could this mean that oen of the OS files is corrupted or something? It looks like bootloader is messed up.

Would it not be easier to just stop/eject the device via the utility in the System Tray, unplug the device, PLUG it back in, and have the operating system redetect the device?Quote from: Aegis on April 16, 2009, 08:47:10 AM

No, this is a built-in card reader and the disk drives involved are also built in, they can't just be unplugged. Are they showing errors in device manager.......?Quote from: Karnac on April 17, 2009, 09:57:16 PM

No, just inserting the card or the disk,no programs or tasks are running.Have a look in Event Viewer ............. To get started, click on the Vista Start button, then in the 'Start Search' box type just three letters: eve. Observe how the larger dialog box displays: 'Programs' and underneath: 'Event Viewer'. Click on 'Event Viewer'.

.... see if you are getting any warnings or errors that may pinpoint your problem, try the System and Apps What kind of discs are you using? My card reader never worked and I do have a Toshiba Laptop. You have me interested now Kpac!Quote from: JHenderson on April 19, 2009, 01:32:47 AM
My card reader never worked and I do have a Toshiba Laptop. You have me interested now Kpac!

Okay then. I might be able to solve your disc drive problem, but not the card reader.

Well the thing is, my CD/DVD drive works when it wants to, basically. Sometimes when I turn on my Toshiba laptop, it doesn't WORK. When I restart it, it does work. I have checked online in every possible site available, and have found out that it is a common problem with Toshiba laptops. I called Toshiba, they suggested things that I had already tried, and eventually coming to the conclusion that a reformat was probably the only OPTION to get rid of it.

So, here are a few things that I did to try and solve it:

Do you have iTunes installed?
If yes,
- Press the Start button and in the search bar at the bottom of the Start menu type "regedit”. Press enter.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} (The first value of this entry should read "CD/DVD Drive").

Now once you have found the CD/DVD drives key in the right panel there should be "UpperFilter" and "LowerFilter". Right click each of these and select Delete.. Once you have deleted these close the registry editor and re-boot. Please, if you are unsure about anything, ask before doing it.

Did you try a system restore?

If NEITHER of those options solve the problem, then...
- Start in safe mode using the F8 key method.
- Go to Start search. Type "device manager" and press enter.
- Check under CD/DVD Drives for something starting with "TssT CORP".
- If you find it, right click and select Uninstall.
- Once uninstalled, reboot the PC into normal mode.
- When finished starting up, the computer should automatically install the device drivers for the disc drive again.

Any luck? Thanks so much, I had a 2 TB External Crash last night (MAXTOR OF COURSE), soI am doing data recovery at the moment of attempting to. I wish I had a friend that worked in a clean room that could physically take each platter and retrieve the information but I don't have thousands of dollars to do that so I am trying a couple other things first, The HDD is sitting in the freezer at this very moment and then Im going to pull it back out and try this all over again, either way....REALLY long story, I will get back to you on the CD/DVD drive fix instructions you sent me and tell you what happens and yes I do Itunes (which I hate) Loaded.....Soooooo..........I did do your reg edit instruction and it didn't work but then thought about disabling DMA in the IDE controllers and Now EVRYTHING WORKS FINE> YAY! Why didn't I think of this before

Solve : windows restore problem?

Answer»

Hey all, please excuse any breaches of etiquette. I'm new to posting in forums though I have been using computers for years and have recently started college for computer repair. Unfortunately I am not far enough along to deal with my current problem. I have a gateway laptop and I recently ran scannow because my computer has come to a crawl. It SAID I had corrupted windows files and to insert disk 2. Unfortunately for me I never made recovery disk (didn't know) and so I cant go that ROUTE. Some suggested I use their dell disk to do a basic repair of the operating system. I tried that and it wiped my old key out. Windows got me back in but now my system is crazy. DVD burner didnt work( updated drivers for it ) it says network resources unavailable ,surfs slow as all get out cant do 2 things at once. tried to do gateway driver update the file wont install just keeps locking up. Scannow said SOMETHING about bad dll cache files. My question is can I just download a dllcahe file from a computer with XE and delete mine and replace it with the new file? I'm hoping that will then allow the automatic driver update from gateway to work. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.Slow down a little

Does your computer have the restore cd or repair system? (All MAJOR brands of pc that I know of have eithre windows cd, restore cd, or restore system coming with computer when brand new which is provided by manufacturer)Thanks for answering, the computer is a laptop and did not come with discs, it has a partition with the recovery supossedly on it. however, system restore does not work, the back up is protected by pc angel and will not let me in. so I can not get to those files. My system is a gateway and has been overwritten with a dell disc. I tried /sfc scannow and it WANTS disc 2, I dont have that disc. Can I just replace the dll cache first and then go from there? I cant even down load microst updates because windows says theres a problem. I'm sure I have a corrupted registry and windows core files. I just want to replace the operating systm with the one backed up on the partition. I have heard that you can get the files through a DOS sytem and then copy them but I am not sure of how to go that route.
ThanksA Gateway machine that a Dell CD was used to recover and PC Angel software added to the mix ? ?
I'd suggest contacting Gateway for Recovery CD's and starting over completely...
But that's just me.

I'd suggest contacting Gateway for Recovery CD's and starting over completely...
But that's just me.

Others may have more ideas...

and note, when you contact Gateway for a restoration cd, they might charge you for it, meaning you're just basically gonna be buying a restore cd from them (ask them). I know compaq does this.

But for Dell CD, why use Dell CD on Gateway PC? Dell CD not made for Gateway CD so error may happen unexpectedly when cd find wrong hardware detected.Dell cd was used because I had no access to a Gateway cd. I was only trying to use it to replace corrupted windows files. Yes I could just call gateway and order recover discs(and pay for them). But as I said in my first post I'm going to school for this crap, and if I wipe the system at the first sign of trouble I would have to say that I wouldn't be the tech I would want working on my computer. I spent 2 hours at Barnes and Nobles Friday night going through every XP and Dos book I could find(4). It seems they have 200 on vista and 2 on XP. Anyway, I want to fix the problem or at least learn as much as I can from it. I have thought about trying to use the Dos commands to copy the files from D (backup partition) to C. And then inserting them where I can. I have tried to use the Microsoft update to get to 3 but that route is blocked by corrupted files. Also when I use the Dos command to check D drive it says that there is only one file on it(system restore) and that it is only18 bytes. This is really confusing as properties shows it as being 2 gigs(the partition is seven gigs). Dos does show a remaing 5.1 gigs free, so that means this file should really be 1.9 gigs which is about right. I used the Dos Directory command to list the individual files but it says there is only one file. Heck I can access more than that through My Computer(apparently there are other files there besides Windows). So no more cracks about using a Dell CD for a Gateway. I just wanted the repair feature and did not know It would replace all the windows files. I wanted to use it like you would scannow.

Solve : Vista Crashing 4x Daily!!!!!?

Answer»

My laptop with Vista Premium crashed two nights ago. This crash is different from previous crashes since it left a different pattern on my monitor after crashing, then I have ever seen before.
Right before this crash, my dial-up Internet connection (which I get through a WiFi router) was reset, so my chat program (XChat 2) was disconnected. I closed it, then opened it again. When I tried to connect to the Freenode server, the computer crashed! The program's list of servers was erased when I restarted the computer.
The following day, Vista crashed 4 or 5 times, and it has crashed 2 or 3 times ALREADY today. Sometimes when it crashed, I was not even at the computer. The only RUNNING programs most of the time IIRC were WMP, Task Manager, and Firefox.

Every time it has crashed, except once when the screen went blank, the monitor was frozen with this pattern:

The SMALL black lines in that screenshot are actually a repeated image. Once it was part of a game I was playing, and another time it was the minimize / restore / close buttons from the top-right of a window.

I have not installed any programs in about a week.
I thought about doing a System Restore, but apparently this feature was turned off so there are no restore points.
I went through the list of processes in Task Manager, but I do not see any new / evil ones listed.

Any suggestions to solve this?
Thanks. Can you access Safe Mode?Quote from: Broni on January 19, 2008, 04:44:07 PM

Can you access Safe Mode?

Probably; why not?
The computer runs just fine, except it crashes every few hours. What I'd like to know is, if it'll crash in Safe Mode?
How old is this computer? Came with Vista preinstalled?I've had it running in Safe Mode for a few hours now, and it seems fine. Although, several things are disabled in Safe Mode, such as networking, music playback, the Aero style, and startup programs (Ie. Apache), so it could be any one of those things.
Incidentally, when I first tried to go into Safe Mode, right after the computer had crashed again, the computer froze during startup, and I had to restart like 3 times until it was finally working.
The laptop came with Vista, and is less than 1 year old.It looks like software problem, then.
We better hurry, then, before your warranty expires. How many weeks left?
I'd like to see your HijackThis log to see what's running there. Download HJT from here: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
Interestingly, my computer has not crashed since I started in Safe Mode, although I am running Vista normally now.
If I still had the problem, it would have crashed about 8x since it last crashed.

This probably has nothing to do with the problem, but I have not been using the Aero interface since I booted in Safe Mode. Safe Mode uses the Windows Classic style, which uses like 100MB less RAM, so I decided to use that. I will probably go back to Aero soon, though.

Fortunately, my warranty still has about 4 months left, so I'm not in a hurry to rediscover this bug.

I'll let you know if it crashes again.

Your HJT log is clean, but.....I can't see any antivirus, nor firewall running. What's up with that?
You need to update your Java: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Uninstall any older Java versions.Take advantage of that warranty before it's too late...

BTW how much RAM do they have installed in there ?My computer started crashing again... it hasn't been running for half the time today.

If the problem isn't segmentation faults or Vista, it could be the motherboard, which was replaced just over a month ago, or maybe it is overheating. The crashes seem unpredictable so it could be a hardware problem.

I will contact HP now. Fortunately, I still have a few months on the warranty.

On a SIDE note, I tried installing Norton, but it said setup is incomplete, click Continue, but that button didn't do anything. The laptop crash a few minutes later, so when I got it running again. I decided to uninstall Norton since there was no "disable" option, and it wasn't working. So after the uninstall program was half-way finished, Norton finally started and said the setup was complete... Anyway, I will try that other program (AVG) later, but this doesn't seem like a virus.

I have 1GB RAM and only use 1 Java program. :-P

Solve : Virtual Memory vs ReadyBoost.?

Answer»

I have an OLDER laptop with a Pentium M 1.6 Ghz processor and I just upgraded from 2x 512 pc2700 333mhz DDR RAM to 2x1024 pc2700 333mhz DDR RAM. I am running VISTA Home Basic because my integrated graphics is only 128MB. With my current use I have virtual memory setup at to auto configure and its currently allocated 2339MB but recommends 3058MB. My Readyboost is setup on a USB 2.0 8GB Lexar Flashdrive and is setup at its max of 4090MB. When I am doing my typical computer activities my RAM is 50 Percent used (according to the Performance Monitor on my Windows Sidebar Application) but jumps up to MAYBE 70% on max software usage. In your guys PROFESSIONAL opinion should I adjust my virtual memory and configure it myself with values you would recommend and continue to use ReadyBoost or get rid of ReadyBoost and just use virtual memory. Should I not use either at all because my 2 GB of RAM are sufficient enough? Is readyboost better than virtual memory or are either of them faster than the other? Sorry to have so many questions but am really wanting to make this setup as best as possible because I use my computer often. Who doesn't want their computer running at optimum performance? I know I do! Thanks Guys for reading and any advice mould be awesome! Let me know if I did not provide any other Computer Specs you made need too. Thanks again for all your guys help and have a GREAT ONE!2 things i would try:

Get rid of Ready Boost and leave the other settings in place...see how performance is (my guess is it will be better)

2nd thing you can try is set the min and max # of Virtual memory to the same # such as 2048. You need to re-boot for changes to take effect...Is there a performance software that could monitor the differences between the 2 or because its virtual disk its coming directly from the internal HDD it should use the memory faster than going through USB 2.0 Flash Drive. I will definitely set the values of the min and max on my virtual memory the same, Should I do double what my RAM is of 2048 to 4096 virtual min/max or will it probably max out at 2048 because that how much physical RAM I have on the machine? Thanks again!2048 is plenty.
Is this an IDE drive or SATA ? ?
If IDE go to Device Manager and right click the primary/secondary IDE channels and right click them and select Properties...
Verify they have not dropped back into PIO mode...should be DMA or Ultra DMA if available...I do have a sata internal but I have an IDE under device manager and did check and its set ultra dma. I set virtual as 2048 as min and max as recommended and will REMOVE the usb flashdrive Readyboost. Thank you for the information. My internal hard drive accessing the memory has got to be faster than using a slower usb 2.0 drive as memory (readyboost) I would think....Thanx for the update...let us know.ALWAYS go for the virtual memory over the ready boost because the speed access of USB is much slower than the internal HDD. Now that I know I will always do that, only reason I would ever use readyboost is if I had virtual already maxed, my ram slots were full, and still not sitting at 50% usage at normal program usage. Thanks for the info. I would thank you again but cant within a 2 hour span.....

Solve : Hard drive on laptop is over half full?

Answer»

I had to run recovery on my laptop and it took me back to when it was bought, with
windows XP home pro edition w/sp2 and thats ok everything SEEMS to be working fine.
But before recovery i had xp pro edition /wsp2, now the QUESTION,
Is there a way to tell if XP pro is still on my laptop also?
because when I run defrag it shows 60% of my 70 gig hard drive is used up, and I have not added anything yet.

Any HELP would be greatly appreciatedQuote

windows XP home pro edition w/sp2
What does that mean, Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Pro? There is no "home pro edition".

Open My Computer. How many drives/partitions are shown there? What size are they?Open My Computer and click on Help/About Windows and it will tell you...
Because you did a restore you need to grab all the Windows all over again from Windows Update.

I have heard this method does make the installation larger...do me a favor Open Explorer and right click the WinNT folder and select properties...this will report what size it is...I'm sorry this is XP home edition w/sp2
I went to explorer help and to system info and it show's just the 1 edition so I guess
thats not what is taking up my space. But I did notice my memory of 512.00 mgb is now 129.01 mgb's so I must have something taking up to much memory. Memory is different than drive space. You will have to answer the above questions in order to better diagnose this. In discovering where space goes, one little safe add on that i have often found very useful is Folder Size, which adds add size to the context menu when you right click and hit Properties. You can reorganize them by size in the listings. Will not work on Vista. http://rotebetasoftware.net/wp/freeware/folder-size/

My XP drive is 15GB, without document/music/video files, with the largest single space takers being the hiberfil.sys (needed for hibernation) and the I386 folder (system backup files). I don't see any questions to answer. But I'm not too good at this computer stuff so sorry if I seem
But I did run "folder size" NICE view of my usage realy surprised found 28.76 GB in My backup is there any way to remove this and create a new backupSorry for not getting back to you, i had a lot of irons in the fire. And no need to apologize, as we all began as newbies and i have much to learn as well.

The questions were, Open Windows Explorer (hold down the Windows key and tap the E key and let both go) and see how many drives/partitions are shown there. What size are they? (go to View up top and click on Details). Then and navigate in the C drive and right click on the WinNT folder and select properties...this will report what size it is.

As for your last question, (i assume that you are indeed speaking about your XP backup and not the System Restore files), it does sound this that is the answer to your space problem, and you can DELETE the backup, but it may be that you have only one backup, that being your entire C drive. In any case, i would recommend you save at least your personal files somewhere first. You can then go to Start> Programs>Accessories>System Tool and launch Backup (or, hold Windows key and tap R key, type ntbackup.exe and hit enter). Then choose Advance Mode and hit the Restore and Manage tab up the top, right click on the backup and choose Delete catalog. Then check your space again in Explorer (press the F5 key to refresh the window).

You can also delete all the System Restore points except the last one by right clicking on your C drive, then hit Properties and then Disk cleanup and then the More Options tab up the top. System Restore is down the bottom.

I would recommend that you buy an external hard drive if you can, or an external enclosure to put a spare drive in, and that way you can just plug it in the USB and backup files to there.

Solve : Files put in temporary folders lost- how do you recover them??

Answer»

A while ago, I ended up GETTING an update for my Vista computer. It installed a temporary user file on my computer that I was logged into.

Upon noticing that all my usual files were gone, I located them and moved them into the temporary user file, not realizing that the temporary user had been created. Of course, upon the next start up, the temporary user file had been removed, along with all my files.

I have years of work and important documents on the computer, and I any backup I have is outdated and obsolete. You can imagine how much these files mean to me, so I was understandably upset.

Is there any way to recover these files? I would appreciate any and all help. Why would you store your most important files in a 'temporary' folder? I'ts temporary!!
Temporary is a term that denotes a finite period of time, with a defined beginning and an end.How did you create the temporary user ? ?
What folder was created in this temporary user profile ? ?
ALTHOUGH Vista can do some funky things from time to time it won't just randomly delete a User Profile without som e sort of prompting...
I'm afraid we are gonna need some more details on what exactly has transpired leading up to this dilemna.Quote from: Mulreay on MAY 08, 2009, 05:58:42 PM

I didn't realize it was a temporary folder. It was installed by Vista during an update, and I thought my files had simply been moved. I put them "back" thinking that it was my usual folder.Quote from: patio on May 08, 2009, 06:45:09 PM

Vista was installing updates, but I GUESS something went wrong and it installed a temporary user until it configured the settings. It didn't delete my user profile. It simply moved it.never heard of this.it probably used a different user account to perform the updates... not a temporary one.

Most updates require administrator rights and IIRC the DEFAULT accounts created are Limited User accounts. You'll likely need to log-on as the administrator instead of your usual account to try to find the files.

Solve : Unattended installation & accessing winnt.exe above 137gb?

Answer»

I hope someone can help me!

I'm about to install Windows XP Home, unattended. The entire CD is copied to a free partition on my hard disk, and I've prepared and added unattend.txt to the i386 folder.

Three questions:
1). All configurations I need are in unattend.txt (mainly determining various paths for Windows, Program Files and Documents and Settings). Is this all I need, or must I also add other files, like winnt.sif, winnt.bat, unattend.bat ? Or will unattend.txt be enough, considering it has all the features I want?

2). I can't seem to access my installation files directory using FreeDOS. The directory displays when I type the dir command. But I can't get into the folder. The directory is above the 137GB threshold; is this why I can't navigate to it? Anyone else experience this?

3). What is correct path after winnt.exe starts? is it [driveletter]:\installdirectory ? Or is it [driveletter]:\installdirectory\i386 ?

Thanks, I appreciate any replies! You will need to slipstream SP2 into the i386 folder first.
As far as the path statement youmay want to have a read Here...patio,

thanks for the link. I read some of the articles and finally got things started. Had to educate myself on the basics of DOS before doing anything meaningful though; hence the delay in replying.

Regarding FreeDOS, my installation files were in a folder named \WindowsXP, which is over 8 characters long; so I shortened the name and was able to access it. The 137gb limit wasn't the issue.

Incidentally, FreeDOS might be incomplete, in that it doesn't assign letters to NTFS partitions. Go figure. My target partition is NTFS, so FreeDOS skipped over it. That had me confused for a long time (I'm installing on multiple disks, so that added to the confusion). I ASSUME the Windows installer assigns C: to that partition, as per the usual ordering protocol, even though FreeDOS doesn't.

To launch the installer, I used the .bat file below. However, after it copies all my files to the C: drive, it tries to reboot (I think it does; it only happens when I'm not in the room) but can't find kernel according to the message---a typical message when no OS is installed.

Code: [Select]@rem SetupMgrTag
@echo off

echo -
echo - This is a batch script for unattended installation.
echo - It must be placed next to the i386 folder.
echo - Files winnt.exe and unattend.txt should reside in the i386 folder.
echo - If any files are moved from those respective locations, this script will need to be modified.
echo -
echo ===================
echo -
pause

set AnswerFile=.\i386\unattend.txt
set SetupFiles=.\i386

.\i386\winnt /t:C: /s:%SetupFiles% /u:%AnswerFile% /rx:.\i386\lang

Any ideas on why the installation process hangs at that point?`Thanks for any replies Do you have to use FreeDOS ? ?
I'd need to know exactly how you have this unattended CD assembled to advise further.
FreeDOS...or any other DOS shouldn't be needed if the CD is built properly.
Post back with some more details and we can go from there...Ok, it seems to work now!

I had parameter MsDosInitiated="0", but it needed to be MsDosInitiated="1". I'll post the installation script in a little while, so others can use it, but I want to make sure it works right first (I'm actually guiding my dad through this over the phone). Here are some answers for now...

Quote

Do you have to use FreeDOS ? ?

I think so. It's the only DOS I've found, that can assign letters to partitions beyond 137gb.

Quote

No CD's about it. I'm installing directly from a disk partition on disk2 to partitions on disk1 and disk2. Specifically, WINDOWS and Program Files will be on disk1; the boot loader will also be on disk1. Documents and Settings, Swap, Temp, and the printer spool will be on separate disk2 partitions. I figure I'll keep the source on disk2, for future re-installs if needed.

Quote

Again, no CD here. And none of this would be a problem if I were using Linux No drive letter crap to worry about, and it 'sees' all file systems. For above-mentioned WindowsXP, I plan to switch boot order of disks after this is all done. I just hope it keeps track of the original drive letters. Confusing? I'll post back in a few hours.

Thanks for the reply!Whether you are installing from system files from another partition or from a CD i don't see where the drive letter hangup is...Windows should automatically assign the install partition as C: followed by the rest of the partitions on Drive 0 and then Drive 1 (if applicable ) and its corresponding partitions...

As far as keeping track of the drive letters this is where you may run into problems.
If they are 2 seperate Windows installs on 2 different Physical drives i'd suggest letting the BIOS determine which drive to boot from.

Simple example:

My test machine has 2 physical drives each with 3 partitions and multiple OS's.

Drive 0 =

C: DOS 6.2 and Win98SE
D: WinME
E: Win2K

Drive 1 =

C: WinXP
D: Vista
E: Ubuntu

At boot i enter setup to select which drive to boot to. If i select Drive 0 i am presented with an option of which OS to run DOS; Win98; WinME or Win2K
If i select Drive 1 again i have a bootloader selection for those corresponding OS's. The reason this drive needs a bootloader is the fact that Linux exists on that drive.

Keep in mind this is only one method of setting up a dual-boot system.

Quote
For above-mentioned WindowsXP, I plan to switch boot order of disks after this is all done. I just hope it keeps track of the original drive letters. Confusing? I'll post back in a few hours.

This is where you got me confused. If you simply use the unattended install to put XP on drive 2 also; the original install will not know it's there and you won't be presented with a boot option other than using the BIOS to switch between drives.
If you use this method no matter which physical drive you boot to it will be listed in Windows as C:
Also if you have your Docs and Settings folder from install 1 on drive 2 it will be overwritten by the 2nd Windows install and you'll lose that info.
I've probably managed to confuse you now by this point...

So to make a short story long i'd say post back on exactly how you would like the machine setup...there may be a much simpler approach.Quote
I've probably managed to confuse you now by this point...

Not at all. However my system is different. I should have explained it better during my last post. Sorry But maybe this makes it more clear:

-When all is done, disk1 will boot Linux (the only Linux installation on the machine).
-And disk2 will boot WindowsXP (the only Windows installation on the machine).
-WindowsXP partitions will exist on both, disk1 and disk2.
-I'll configure Linux' GRUB to display a menu to choose either Linux or WindowsXP at startup.

But notice that everything I've explained, until those 4-points above, considers that the disks are switched---that is, disk1 is getting WindowsXP; not disk2. It needs to be like that during installation, for boot loader placement. But after installation, I'll switch the disks so WindowsXP is disk2 in the bios.

That's why I am hoping that WindowsXP keeps track of the drive letters after I switch the disks. If so, then I'm golden! Actually though, I don't EXPECT any of that to present a problem. But for now, here's the part I'm still stuck on...

Quote
Whether you are installing from system files from another partition or from a CD i don't see where the drive letter hangup is...Windows should automatically assign the install partition as C:

Yes, it should. However, I've just discovered that none of my available DOS versions seems to acknowledge NTFS partitions. I've tried

FreeDOS 1.0
OpenDOS on the Ultimate Boot CD
Free DOS (different than above) on the Ultimate Boot CD

None of those DOSes see the NTFS partition that I intend for the WINDOWS directory; instead they all assign C: to the first available FAT32 partition---my source directory no less!

When I run the WindowsXP installer (winnt.exe) from disk, it wants to install on that FAT32 partition. Makes sense, because the installer is running inside the DOS environment; it can only see what DOS sees. Oh well.

My only option seems to be using a Windows 98 se boot disk. But I can't find it anywhere yet...and I don't have a floppy drive anyway. Would that work on a bootable CD?---assuming I eventually find the download?

Thank you for reading my long post! The disks are available at bootdisk.com....you can use a WinME file. This will help with the larger HDD size. Grab the one with CDRom support. Your CD drive then becomes "R:" i believe.
Another option to consider is to start the partitions/disks out as FAT 32 and convert them after the installation.
The easiest solution to the drive letter dilemna would be to install XP on drive1 and let it occupy C: Here is a good step by step guide for doing so.
Any partitions can be created after you have the dual-boot setup running properly.
GParted is a decent partitioning TOOL and i believe you may already have it on your UBCD depending on how old it is...Quote
The disks are available at bootdisk.com....you can use a WinME file.

Thanks. However, after a quick search, it looks like WinME doesn't support NTFS. I assume that none of those disks on bootdisk.com do.

Quote

Yes, I know about that one. Seems like the least elegant solution...not that any of Microsoft's solutions are elegant. I really couldn't imagine wanting to be a professional M$ system administrator. I'm now realizing what a sh*t job that would be I digress.

Ok, I tried putting winnt.sif on a usb floppy drive, but the WinXP installation disk doesn't seem to load usb drivers.

So, now I've decided to burn an installation disk. My first attempt failed. Generally, the iso's root includes i386 (with winnt.sif inside) and winnt.bat to start winnt.exe and point to all the pertinent things. However, my iso seems to be missing the WinXP boot file---nothing loads when I try booting to the CD.

I assume the boot file should also be placed in the iso's root, but I can't seem to get definitive info on the net about that. Also, do you know what the boot file is named? Would it be found in i386?

Thanks for sticking with me on this!Which burning program are you using ? ?
The file Microsoft Corporation.img needs to be extracted from the XP CD.
I use IsoBuster for this step.

Slipstream GuideI'm using k3b to burn the .iso. The only .img file on my disk is netwlan5.img, located inside .\i386\SP2.CAB. The file Microsoft Corporation.img is nowhere to be found. I'm using WinXP Home edition; maybe that's why it's not there?

I'm reading in several places that usb drives should be supported for WinXP installations. Nothing concrete though....
http://www.nfbnet.org/pipermail/nfbcs/2006-May/000194.html

Maybe my dad had the boot order wrong. If the floppy is #1 and cd-rom is #2, then maybe they should be reversed?Did you use IsoBuster ? ?
The file NEEDING extraction is hidden...
Read the complete procedure in the link i provided and you'll be on your way...

The boot order will be fine, it will just ignore the floppy if there's none in there.
I've never heard of k3b.Believe it or not, I'm still not successful with this. I read all the links, but creating a bootable CD didn't work; no matter what I tried, it didn't find the bootloader.

But I did get things to work somewhat by temporarily installing an internal floppy drive (external usb didn't work) and booting straight from the original WinXP CD. The CD is first boot device, as set in the bios. I have both, winnt.sif and unattend.txt on the floppy, but I assume it only needs winnt.sif.

That's good enough for my requirements, since my only concern was getting Windows installed on the partitions that I define; the slipstreaming wasn't that important, nor was saving time since I'm only installing on one machine. So aborting the effort of making a bootable CD is no big loss.

Only problem is that, where as it puts Documents and Settings in the right partition, it dumps Program Files and Program Files\Common in the C: partition, along with WINDOWS. In other words, my directory structure looks like this:

C:\WINDOWS
C:\Program Files
C:\Program Files\Common
G:\Documents and Settings

However, the script looks like this...

Very strange, considering that all the listed partitions and drive letters exist. Could it be that ProgramFilesDir and CommonProgramFilesDir parameters have been deprecated for WinXP Home?I think I found the error, though I'm not sure why this would affect things.

I changed the following line:
Code: [Select] UnattendMode=GuiAttended
to this:
Code: [Select]UnattendMode=FullUnattended
In any case, it works now! Thank a bunch for your help, patio. I'll probably revisit this thread sometime in the future when I repartition my older laptop. It's the only Windows machine that I've got left. A souvenir It only has usb floppy access, so I might need to create that slipstreamed disk after all

Solve : 0x000000f4 and 0x00000077 errors?

Answer»

Mid-April, my computer began doing the dreaded blue screen roughly 10 minutes after turning it on. It may be shorter or longer depending on the websites I visit (if I stay on facebook, it'll stay ALIVE for hours; if I try Stumbleupon, forget it.) I hadn't used my computer in about a week prior to the beginning of the problems.

Shortly before the errors occur, my computer will freeze. The errors on the screen are always 0x000000f4 or 0x00000077, with parameters that vary each time.
However, right when they started happening, I got errors on my screen that mentioned something about a partition? But they haven't happened since, and I'm not concerned about those.

I used a Windows hotfix for the 0x000000f4 error, but I found out it didn't work when I ran Avira Antivir in hopes of figuring out a solution to the 0x00000077 error. My computer blue screens with an 0x000000f4 error during a complete system scan when this file is showing on my screen:
c:\windows\$hf_mig$\kb958690\sp3qfe\win32k.sys

I'm using:
Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Build 2600.xpsp.sp3.gdr.090206-1234
Dell XPS MXC051, Intel Pentium processor 1.73GHz, .99GB RAM
I also have a Seagate external hard drive with Kubuntu installed on it which I use on occasion.

I've tried:
Hotfix for 0x000000f4 errors from the Windows support site
Chkdsk utility (always freezes during stage 3)
Running antivirus/antispyware software
Giving it to my uncle who works for Microsoft (who couldn't fix it..)

If you need more info, then ask. I'm not entirely sure what you all need to know, even after reading the topic. I searched in the forums and found a problem similar to mine, but honestly, I don't have a full grasp on the way computers work, and the responses looked like gibberish to me.

Thanks for the help,
KarolineQuote

Chkdsk utility (always freezes during stage 3)

Your hard drive could be failing. How old is the machine?
I got it in December of 2005.3 and a half years. Still, some hard drives fail after a week and some are still going after 10 years. You should back up all of your important data.

Backed it all up.. any other things it could be other than hard drive failure?Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
There aren't any files in the Minidump folder.1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel (Start>Control Panel in Vista).
2. Double-click System.
3. Click (Advanced system settings link in Vista, then --->)the Advanced TAB, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k).

From now on, any new BSOD should generate dmp file. The minidump setting was already selected :/Your errors:
0x77: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
0xF4: CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION
and
Chkdsk utility (always freezes during stage 3)
most likely LEAD to some hardware problems.

1. RUN hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable FLOPPY, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, which is not listed, try using Hitachi tools.

2. Run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html
I am unable to run the diagnostics as it gives me an error:

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows:
The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755.Which Data Lifeguard Diagnostic are you using. You should use the one, which creates bootable CD. Don't run the tool from within Windows.

Solve : Fatal System Error c000021a (0xc0000001 0x0010034c) any one have this problem??

Answer»

My computer has a fatal system error c000021a. It is a vista HP Pavilion and the warranty has expired all but a year ago. The system is a dull bus but is only two years old. I have been having this problem with the blue screen for about nine months now. The computer will just turn it's self off when ever now but before it was when we had downloaded a lot of updates. Now I have noticed that when I run a full computer scan it will not let the virus scan finish and than the computer shuts down, turns it's self off. I turn it on and get the microsoft screen than a black screen telling me that I can chose to fix the computer or run windows normal. I chose to fix it and a blue screen saying this appears:

{Fatal System Error} c000021a
The INITIAL session process or system process TERMINATED unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x0010034c) The system has been shut down.

After turning off the computer and turning it back on a couple of times I see ANOTHER blue screen that says dumping PHYSICAL memory! I then turn it off wait a while turn back on and the computer seems to fix it's self.Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.

ok I have found all the dmp files but am unsure as to how to zip. Do you mean cut and past?Alright so I KNOW how to zip now and the .dmp files you asked for I have found there to be 35 and it dates back to 8-24-08 until now. Unfortunatly when I try to zip them a screen appears saying:

"File not found or no read permission"

There is very private information in these files is there anyway you can walk me through what I am looking for to repair my problem?

~GeeveThere is no private information in dmp files.

Now, we don't need 35 files. Zip only those from last couple of weeks.
In Vista, you may need to copy those files, you want to zip, paste them in some other folder, and then try to zip them.I was able to zip one of the dmp files but am having the most difficult time figuring out how to cut and past, drag and drop, copy and past no luck.Click on first dmp file.
Hold SHIFT, and click on last dmp file.
Now all dmp files are selected (highlighted).
Hold CTRL, and press C key.
Now, all dmp files have been copied.
Go to your desktop, click on any empty space.
Hold CTRL, and press V key.
Now you have all dmp files pasted on your desktop.

Solve : Laptop blank screen no icons no start menu.?

Answer»

I have a laptop with Vista 64 bit, once I start my computer it is missing icons and start menu. I hit CtlL,ALT,DEL and GET into the task manager. I open new task end enter explorer and all of a sudden all icons and start menu appear.

But once i reboot computer it goes back to no start menu or icons.

Thanks for helpOk, so have you had any hardware/software CHANGES recently? Installed anything? removed anything?YES before that it was on a external monitor plasma screen and i had all desktop on external screen. I was not using laptop screen.Hmmm I dont think that that would have done anything... Any software changes though? Also, the other thing you could try is that perhaps your computer is still using the screen you have hooked up now as the extended desktop perhaps? Right click the desktop and go to personalize>>>>>>display settings. Which numbered monitor is a solid color? No software changes, monitor solid color is 1.On that same screen, is the "this is my main monitor" ticked for the #1 screen?Yes.Okay, ONE LAST question before we try something else. Is the #2 screen a solid color as well? IF not, I have something else you can try.No.Okay, let's try this:

open registry (menu Start -> run (or run Comand prompt): regedit).

open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current
Version \ Winlogon

At right pane there is the "Shell". The value of it should be "explorer.exe"Ok I will try and will advise, thanks for your help.

Solve : can't load into safe mode in windows vista?

Answer»

I have been trying to fix a new dell inspiron laptop with windows vista that was purchased in june 2007. To my knowledge the owner has not done anything that would have given her a virus or anything of that NATURE, THOUGH she did say she always is connected to the internet and leaves her computer on all the time. She was trying to rip one of her cds one evening into WMP but she had to try like 5 times to get it to work. It worked fine the morning after, but when she came back later that afternoon it was a black unresponsive screen. I have tried repeatedly to boot up safe mode to use system restore but after I SELECT safe mode the "loading windows files please wait" shows up. After a few minutes the green vista loading bar appears and then a few minutes later the screen just goes black. I have waited about 30 minutes with the black screen and nothing happens. At the initial dell boot screen I have pressed F12 and ran the extensive diagnostic test and the only errors that appeared were 5 or 6 bad sectors in the hard drive. We don't have the back up disks on hand, so is there anything I can do to fix it?Quote

the only errors that appeared were 5 or 6 bad sectors in the hard drive
This is not good on 7 months old HD. I'd recommend getting free diagnostic tool form your HD manufacturer.Yeah bad sectors on a drive that new is a bad sign. I would get that drive replaced ASAP.
But before replacing it, it is a good idea to run the manufacturer's own diagnostics tool. Do you know the manufacturer of the hdd?Yeah I ended up running the long test of the seatools diagnostic tool by seagate and I ended up with 99 errors by 9% then it gave up scanning for errors. So I'm pretty sure that the hard drive is totally screwed. since its screwed and is still under warranty would it be better get dell to send a new one or buy a new one and reinstall everything myself?I'd suggest getting a new one and doing a clean install of Vista so you can use the MACHINE...in the meantime RMA the other drive to Dell and when the replacement arrives hook it up as a slave and use it for extra storage...

BTW even though you had a Seagate drive fail i'd personally still get another one as they are the only manuf. to offer a 5 year warranty...Quote
in the meantime RMA the other drive to Dell and when the replacement arrives hook it up as a slave and use it for extra storage...
This is exactly what I did, when my HD gave up.Since this is a laptop I would check if there's room for a slave first.
Though you could always use the spare drive in another machine or buy an enclosure for it and use it as an external drive.Ooooops...forgot it was a laptop, Sorry.Hard drive enclosure still can be used...

Solve : Some installed programs not listed and running in another user account??

Answer»

I have the following user accounts created in my PC.
A ( admin account )
B ( limited account )

I have created the B ( limited ) account for security purpose.

Issue : I can access all the programs ( Start > All Programs ) in the A account but,

some of the installed programs are not listed and not running in B.

Following applications are not listed.

1.Ccleaner

2.Vista inspirat brico pack ( vista visualisation for xp ). It is not working in B account.

...etc

Could you suggest me a solution for this?

The B user does not have a HIGH enough LEVEL to RUN programs that alter the system. Promote B to a higher level. Or crate a new account for that user.I have created the B ( limited ) account to secure from the Internet threats.

One of the MVP agent has suggested me to USE the limited account while use internet to secure from threats.

Solve : How can i increase speed in Windows Vista?

Answer»

I have installed windows vista OS, and its taking too much time for login and shutdown, I have 1 gb ram, nortan 2007 antivirus installed.
so guide me how can i increase speed in windows vista os.If you installed Vista Premium add another gig of ram.Dumping Norton would probably be an improvement. I'll suggest AVG Free as a replacement, if this computer is for personal use. You can get it at http://free.grisoft.com/I have Vista HB on a Dell 520 with a dual core 3.08ghz cpu with 1.5 ram, and it is slower to boot or shutdown and less responsive in some basic tasks than XP (on the same machine), or even my old W/98se with a 650mhz cpu. But it is overall the most stable OS yet.

You definitely need more memory, and even though i only have home basic i could use 2gb of total ram. NewEgg has 1gb of DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) for about 25.00 with S+H.

You want to EXAMINE what is set to load with Windows. Go to Start>RUN, TYPE msconfig and hit Start up and find what is checked. You can move the column sizes from the top if needed. Programs like MS Office do not need to load with Windows, among other things. Do a Google type search of all entries so you know what is running, and besides deselecting unnecessary programs , you should then be able to check the LIST periodically to see what has been added secretly (from ITunes, etc. to malware). A freeware programs called WinPatrol is a help in alerting you to this. And an programs like StartUp list can GIVE you a list of things that load with Windows http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwstartup.html

Other tweaks that i have found helpful include disabling unnecessary services (Start>Run (or Windows key + R), type services.msc and hit Enter) as this guide shows: http://www.speedyvista.com/services.html You may want to create a restore point first. (Start>Run rstrui.exe)

And by going to System Properties (hold down the Windows key and hit the Pause/Break key) and choosing Advanced System Settings>Advanced>Performance, you can deselect things like Fade Out menus, etc. You can also access the System Restore functions by hitting System Protection rather than Advanced in System Properties

I also found TweakVI (freeware) useful in finding more tweaks, like speeding up menu response, and turn off extras etc. But you have to carefully consider all the options. http://www.softplatz.com/Soft/Utilities/Diagnostics-Optimizers/TweakVI-Basic.html

Hope this helps. Quote from: vasim0101 on January 18, 2008, 12:16:48 AM

Some actual times would be helpful here; that eliminates the subjectivity regarding such issues. You did not mention if you have Ghost installed. If so, that and most anti-virus programs slow down a computer, especially shut-downs.

help would be nice thanks...markAn upgrade in memory would be a valid move.....Overheating?

Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows logo key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

Post two results, one when computer idle, second one when watching video.amd athlon(tm) 64 x2 dual core processor tk-53 1.70 ghz idle temp 181 fcorrection idle temp 149, the other temp was internet and maybe one or two apps open and no videoI need to know what are ALL temperatures listed.good NEWS....i took apart the computer and the vent's were partially blocked and the fan was covered as well, so i cleaned it all out and it dropped the temp down to 117 deg's idle, What did you use to clean the inside? Compressed air?trust me it's ok, i'm using it to talk with you and it has'nt overheated in 24 HOURS or shut down...i wanna say thanks , but do have a question bout the battery, it has a charge detector built in which say's full, but computer will not run unless plugged in and i get a window pop up ref to the charger cannot be identified..is it time to replace battery and the charger or something else maybe...thanks again for your helpoh on start up i get a screen ref the charger i have to click enter before it will finish booting...If you're referring to the message that says "Your charger's voltage/wattage cannot be determined. The computer will continue to operate, but at a reduced state of performance" or something similar, what that means is:

A. The charger needs replacing.
B. The motherboard needs replacing.

I had this exact problem several times, Dell laptops seem to be plagued with it. It has something to do with a faulty battery circuitry, I'm not really sure of the specifics. HOWEVER, basically either:

A. Your computer thinks the battery is full and won't charge it.
B. Your computer thinks it is dangerous to recharge the battery and refuses to do so.

I do suggest you always place your laptop on a flat surface to keep it well ventilated, and to always keep it clean of dust. This can ALSO happen from overheating (but it's unknown to me as to why the battery circuitry would fail.) If replacing the charger does not work, a Dell technician replaced my motherboard and the computer resumed normal operation.

If this is not your problem, please post the error message you are receiving on boot up so we can further diagnose the issue at hand.

Solve : Cached RAM?

Answer»

Hello, I've been having an unexpected problem recently.
I have 8GB of RAM and own Windows Vista x64. What happens when I start up the computer, my Physical Memory starts up with 6GB free; within 5 minutes, however, it goes down to about 6-10MBs of free memory. The memory seems to be transferred to the cache (Cached), with 6GB of cached memory and 6MBs free. This is only a recent problem! What in the world is being cached??? Something is terribly wrong and I don't know how to fix it. Is it a virus?
Thanks! It's all perfectly normal. Vista handles RAM in very different way, than previous Windows versions.
It'll cache almost all available RAM, making it ready to use. Cached doesn't mean used, it means "ready".
Vista says: "RAM not used\cached is WASTED RAM".

My Adobe Photoshop has started giving me strange TROUBLES when copying and pasting images; this type of problem I've been getting is associated with low memory. Clearly there is a problem there, what am I to do?

EDIT: FYI, in case you are wondering, photoshop isn't the problem. Copying and pasting images seems to be malfunctioning in any image EDITING software. The clipboard seems to be the problem? What is Adobe's exact error?
I don't use Photoshop, but I recall something like Adobe creating its own memory cache.

copying and pasting images will not work regardless of the image editing software you using?

So BASICALLY you can't copy and paste images to any image editing software you have tested.Quote from: 2x3i5x on May 22, 2009, 05:21:09 PM

thats right
when you copy, and then try to paste, the pasted image is different: as in lacking coloursQuote from: Broni on May 22, 2009, 05:18:04 PM

it is not a photoshop specific problem
photoshop does not give any errors
the pasted image is simply different
and by malfunction i meant (check above post), the pasted image lacks colours, and the lacking colours cannot be added under any circumstance, again, in ANY image edting software, not just photoshop
again, this is not a photoshop specific problem; reminder: photoshop does not give any errorsYou copy from where to where?

Solve : Vista headaches?

Answer»

Hi everyone – I have a Vista headache! Vista Premium came installed on my replacement computer and I am having some real problems. The two primary issues I have not resolved: every time I ATTEMPT to open Outlook (full Outlook, not Express) I am prompted for my password. I always select “Save this Password”; have configured my account to automatically load the password and have TRIED not using any password. No matter what I do, every single time the download STOPS, asks for my password and then I have to restart Outlook in order to continue the download. My ISP – Comcast – claims this is not their issue, but something within Vista. I have configured their interface with my password information and this does show up when using their e-mail client. But, I hate their client since they pass through tons of SPAM and also make it really tough to send images [I send loads of images because of my work – writer/photographer].

The second issue: whenever I attempt to change the NAME of a file; delete a file; remove an application (using uninstall) or make any changes on the system, I receive a message stating I cannot do this because I do not have PERMISSION. No one uses this system but me. I am signed in as the administrator. There is only one account, mine as administrator. I do not password any accounts since no one but me uses this system.

Can someone, please, tell me what is going on and how to resolve these issues? Thank you for any help!

System specs:
Dell XPS 6301
Pentium(R) Core2 Duo
4 GB RAM
1TB HD
Windows Vista Premium
I can't help you with your first problem, because I'm not familiar enough with Outlook.

As for your second problem...
Enable real Administrator account: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/, and see, if same thing happens.
Don't play with that account too much, because you don't want to mess it up.
Just test the issue, and disable it again.

Solve : Word 2003 putting in unwanted symbols?

Answer»

I've had this happen before but don't remember how to fix it. I'm on Vista using Word 2003 and when typing my document today and it's also affecting Outlook email I'm getting odd symbols. For example if I type a QUESTION mark ? instead I get É

It started when I noticed my apostrophes were backwards. When I type don't instead I get don`t. Quotation marks are also backwards.

I've checked my language to make sure I'm still set for Amercian English and I am. It almost looks like I'm getting Spanish language symbols.

It appears that some sort of keyboard shortcuts have turned on and I don't know how to get them back and get my documents LOOKING normal again.

Can anyone help?

Thanks! The keyboard SETTINGS are in another area, I think.
You could be witting English but the keyboard could be on Spanish.
Look into regional settings.
This is how it looks in XP.

Thanks. I've got it figured out now. Apparently it is playing FRENCH, not Spanish. Ctrl + Shift + FN got rid of the antics and computer is back to writing normally.

Solve : Keyboard won't type, have to keep restarting, etc.?

My keyboard won't normally type when I start it up. I have to right click my computer, select manage, device manager, human interface devices, then uninstall my first USB human interface device (keyboard) that always has a yellow exclamation point on it, then restart my computer when it prompts me to. After this, I can type when I log back in, and the problem doesn't start up again until the next time I TURN the computer on again. this is driving me NUTS, please help me figure out the problem. I have tried other KEYBOARDS, same problem, and I don't know if this is important, but my Logitech keyboard has some extra buttons on it, like ones that open calculator and search menu, and those DO work, but all the normal letter keys like L don't.Please list the type of COMPTER you have...

thanks in advance!open a command prompt, and type: ATTRIB -s -h c:\

hit enter and go to the directory where you are looking for the file, and SEE if it is there.

thanks BRO! but it said that FILE NOT FOUND what is it means? sorry, if you go to the command prompt type: attrib -h -s c:\directory\filename.XXX

but you will have to know the directory and file name you are trying to make appear

Don't put XXX for the file extension, use the file extension of the file you are trying to find, if there is a file extension

for example, if you want to make the ntldr file appear in the root directory of your harddrive C:\ you would type: attrib -s -h c:\ntldrThis is often a sign of an infection....

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administratoryou could also try this: attrib -s -h c:\*.*

The astric followed by the dot and astric means that it will unhide all files on C:\, except maybe one or two Quote from: Broni on May 20, 2009, 08:10:32 PM

And, which version of whatever it is you're talking about?SORRY, that was stupid! microsoft word, version 5.1. thanks!!!5.1? Is this the Dos version or the Mac version?
As far as I've been able to find out there's never been a version 5.1 for Windows.Quote

Hmm, so you have a very, very old version of Word? Going backward from the latest version: 2007, 2003, 2002/XP, 2000, 97, 6.0 (part of Office 4.3).

How old is that version 5.1? I doubt anyone here recalls using it. Still, how much more difficult is it to use the Delete key instead of the Backspace key?

Oh, just saw Deerpark's post. Yeah, I also don't know whether such a version ever existed. The first version I can recall using was 6.0, which was part of Office 4.3.Microsoft Office Word 2003, Windows version 5.1Quote from: highpointkate on January 16, 2008, 12:23:38 PM

Anyway, do you have your Insert key on or off? You can tell by looking at the status bar at the bottom of Word. Do you see OVR in a box on the status bar? The Insert function can be TOGGLED on and off either from the keyboard, assuming your keyboard has an Insert key, or by double clicking on the OVR on Word's status bar. You might also go to Tools, Option, Edit, and review the settings there.you are a genius tools, OPTIONS and edit worked - the 'typing replaces section' was not selected, although how i managed to de-select it yesterday is a mystery!!! thankyou so much, you have made my work a lot easier!!! OK, glad to hear PROBLEM solved.

Vista - 6.0
XP - 5.1
2K - 5.0
98 - 4.10

Solve : How can i easily override VISTA permissions??

Answer»

I am running Vista HB, and turned off UAC rather quickly after i received this new PC.. I am the only administrator, and am not on a network or suing share folders, and i am the only account listed under User Accounts. However, too often i am prevented from renaming a folder a program just made, or deleting it. I have a folder now made by WINDOWS Movie Maker which i recently made, on a second internal HD, which Vista tells me i cannot delete.

I am aware of a complicated procedure that i have used, which is not guaranteed to work. I usually just boot into XP and delete it no problem, or use a freeware utility called Unlocker which will do it upon rebooting.

But after using W/98 for years in very extensive internet use and having virtually no problems with viruses (one) or the like (thank God), i would just like to override the permissions entirely.

What method did you use to turn off UAC ? ?You can also force your profile into admin mode by using the Offline NT Password Editor which now supports vista, or use it to confirm that you are in fact an admin if the systems SAM.

I had a client a few months ago who got a real good DEAL on a computer from Staples, and when he got it home he had nothing but troubles with it. Since he bought it on clearance he could not return it. So he called me to check it out at $35 an hour. Immediately I found out that it was on clearance because it was the floor model and was sold at $400 for a $1000 computer. Staples so called didnt have the Admin password or wouldnt release it because they didnt want the password for all the floor systems leaking out. The client had an account that was a user account and not an admin account. I suggested that we blow everything away and start new off the restore CD, but what do you know, Staples didnt have that bundled with the computer. So I said ok, lets edit the SAM and force your profile to Administrator with a blank password. And after that I earned a quick $70 and he then had a good system at a fraction of the cost of a new computer.

This tool can be found here if you want to check it out... (( This is dangerous if you dont follow the directions and do soemthing abnormal during the process like shutdown before saving the edited SAM.))

You simply download and burn the ISO to a CD and then boot the computer off of this tool that will boot in a LIVE Linux mode and the tool will launch. You then select from the menu's that are presented to you.

http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/That doesn't sound like a UAC, permissions or "limited account" issue. Daniel, you already hit upon the issue when you downloaded the "Unlocker" software.

A program will lock a file when it is in use. For instance, you can't move a file while it's being downloaded because it gets locked. If you load a movie into Windows Movie Maker you can't delete that file without first removing it from Movie Maker because it's locked. And if you try to delete a folder that has a locked file inside it, you get the same issue. MOST programs releas locked files once you close the program, but not always. You just need to make sure nothing's using that file anymore. If nothing running is using the file, and it's still saying it's in use or locked or whatever, then something might not have closed properly and you'll need to use your current methods to get rid of it.

As far as actual file permissions are concerned, they're built into the NT file system and cannot be disabled. You could always run Fat32 if you're that against it.First, i am pretty sure i went to Ctrl Pnl>Security>Other Settings and turned off the UAC there.

2. I have read about changing the SAM, and in fact i have that burned that app to a disk because i was going to mail it to a family that could not login. But as i reinstalled this OS from scratch soon after i received it, and did not add users or ANYTHING that is not strictly required, i do not know why i would not be the system administrator. From what i read not being able to modify/delete folders/files - even one's you have made - without jumping through a lot of hoops is a rather common issue. XP has never presented me with this problem.

I also have since used a reg file i first found thru the NeoWin forums called TakeOwn.reg, which when merged allows you to Shift R. click on a file and choose TakeOwn, and then you can delete it (Elevated privileges or something). http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t597175.html
Except that it does not always seem to work - i deleted some files and then they reappeared!

3. That WMM folder was just an example, and the Movie Maker was closed. And the REASON given for not being able to modify it was because of a lack of permissions. I am not knowledgeable enough about vista protocols or able to replicate this problem enough to get a fuller analysis of this issue, but was looking for a fix so that it does not happen anymore. Thanks for all your input.

Trying to fix 3 weeks old computer would be highly un-wise.
If it's acting up now, what will happen 2, 6, 15 months from now, especially when the warranty is out.
I'd insist not on fixing it, but on replacing it.

This is TRUE. But I do have a there-year service plan on this and if the problem is reasonably fixable, I would prefer to fix it then send it in. Again, because business wise, I don't THINK I can tolerate a two week period with no ACCESS to my computer and no alternatives.

Again: Do you think a reinstall of Windows would be appropriate here? Or what? You can give it a shot, but you may be having some hardware problems, and those are hard to detect through some computer forum.Quote from: Broni on May 20, 2009, 11:44:28 PM

glenafton...
Is Vista having problems, or is it just you dont like how it looks?

What you must realize is this:
Your Vista computer is from 2007. Windows XP, however, is from 2002. As you can imagine, there may be conflict problems. You will never be able to get the full potential out of your computer with XP, and some of your hardware might not work.

There is no way for me to give a yes/no answer to whether going to XP will work. Check your manufactures website and see if they have all of your drivers available in XP.

Other than that, what issues are you having with Vista? Zylasta,
MANY thanks for the reply.
Apart from the annoying "Are you sure" popups of vista I am having problems.
The latest was on Monady when the system shut down and I lost a lot of valuable photographs and word documents. The documents I can re-do but the photographs are lost as I have no replacements for them.
I also have problems with Vista not accepting programmes. The most notable is the for my Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera. It will not accept it at all. As an alternative I purchased ACDSEE 9 but even that is not satisfactory.
The system shutting down has happened 4 times to my knowledge but this is the first time I have lost anything.
I have automatic updates running and I run AVG antivirus daily and once a week in safe modeFor the system shutting down part, it sounds like a hardware issue. Vista will not cause this. (I run a Vista computer, its flawless)

UAC (Those annoying popus) can be disabled. Hold down the WindowsKey + R, and type:
MSCONFIG
Go to the Tools tab, and find "Disable UAC", and click Launch.
Then, to take care of Windows SECURITY Center, click the popup it displays for more information, and then towards the lefthand bottom corner of the Security Center window, click "Change how Security Center Alerts Me"

As for your camera software, I dont know enough information for that...

But, like I SAID, degrading to XP will not solve sudden shutdown problems. That sounds like a hardware issue. Zylstra,
Many thanks for your help and advice. I will do as you advise and see how things work out.

Solve : Help with Vista?

Answer»

Installation file. I'll just go ahead and name all the files in the installation file. The only one that says .exe in it's properties tab is the file I mentioned above, "setup".

compress.dc_
mdata11.md_
mordor.wip
setup
setup.lst
setup1.ex_
setupkit.dl_
unwip.ex_
vbctl3d.vb_
vbrun300.dl_
ver.dl_
waves.wip

Right click on setup.exe, then Properties, then Compatibility tab.
CHANGE compatibility mode to Windows 95. OK your way out.
Double click on setup.exe to run it.
After the game is installed, you should see the game .exe file, most likely unwip.exe (what is the name of the game?)
Change game's .exe file compatibility to Windows 95, and try to run it.setup1.ex_ doesn't have a compatibility tab neither do any of the other files I listed, only the setup bootstrap blah blah blah one does. setup1.ex_ and all the other files except setup, say they OPEN with Windows Shell Common.

The game is Mordor 1.1 Depths of Dejenol.I just found the no install version online. Changing the compatibility still doesn't work. I get the same .

I guess I'll keep the file and wish I were playing IT. Almost as good.

can't swear can I? You all know what I really want to say.

DARN YOU VISTA!!!!Where did the game come from?

You can obtain the game legally by buying it from Decklin at his Domain here.

No worries. I downloaded the shareware version from that same site, I guess I mixed it up with Mordor 2 which is sorta full but they abandoned it and changed the series name along with pretty much everything else. Here it is. Very convenient site. I tried all kind of tricks, but UNFORTUNATELY I wasn't able to get it to work.
Double clicking on exe file does nothing.Darn. I wish there was a way to alter the source code of the game so that it would work on vista. Guess I'll just have to wait for Mordor XP.

Thanks anyways everyone.
