Solve : v423e29.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...?

Answer»

I already had HJT on my own computer.

Yes, have just finished and am sending my log too.

I tried to delete apcupsk.dll and aoldialo.dll from WINDOWS\system32 but the message came up for both "Cannot delete apcupsk.dll (aoldialo.dll). Access denied: Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use".

Here is my log:
Thanks so much for all the help you've given me I really do appreciate it:)

Ok I'll download Superantispyware on this computer. How do I run it on the bad ONE though?

Btw My Web Search didn't appear in Add/Remove.

OK, v423e2q.exe is gone.

On good computer, download Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
Move it to bad computer. It's a very small file (200KB). You can use floppy, memory card, flash drive, CD.
On bad computer, double click on downloaded file, and it'll install itself as an extra option under mouse right click.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32
Right click on aolddialo.dll, then click Unlocker
It'll give you an option to delete file IMMEDIATELY (which, most likely, won't work), or on next reboot (which you pick).
Do the same with apcupsk.dll
Restart computer, and see, if files were deleted.
Hi Broni,
No luck and I'm sorry to have given you such a nightmare of a job with no end result.

Yesterday my son came over and rebuilt my computer, it seemed to be the easiest solution in the end.

Thanks so much for all your help and advice and I'll certainly recommend this site to everyone

regards

Yesterday my son came over and rebuilt my computer, it seemed to be the easiest solution in the end.
Sometimes, if you can sacrifice whatever you have on your computer, it's the easiest option.
Yes it is.
He was able to save EVERYTHING too so it was well worth it really.Good

Solve : Search indexer not working??

Answer»

Running Vista home premium

I keep getting a small pop up box appearing on my screen stating - 'Microsoft windows search INDEXER stopped working and was closed'
What does this mean and how can I fix it?Check it out...

Link Edit
Alan <>< When you'll have it fixed with ale52's advice, consider this....
Many people, including myself, have Indexing Service disabled, because it SLOWS computer down.
Many people, including myself, don't even use Windows Search, which is little bit crappy.
Some use Google Desktop search. I use Super Finder:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/Super-Finder.shtmlNoticed WHILST reviewing earlier posts that I hadn't replied to you both for the assistance and information given above.

Belatedly - THANKS both, I've simply removed the search facility as advised and no longer suffer the annoying 'pop up' boxes.I'm glad, you GOT it fixed

hey im trying to downgrade (or shall i say upgrade lol) from vista to xp pro my hdd is wd1200bevs i have a gateway mx8716b and slipstreaming sp2 etc is not an option i bought a floppy drive for the purpose of pressing (f6) to install 3rd party raid driver at xp's boot screen xp does reconize my floppy drive it even lets me import the driver etc but then after a little bit of loading i get this message
file \winxp\fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected eror line 2108 in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c.
i think i have the correct drivers possibly not
IVE tryed many things ALSO my bios is shadowed i cant DISABLE hd settings etc a step by step walkthrough or any help at all would be much appreciated and i know your the guys for the job. thank you in advance...

You do realize Vista is an OS of 2007, and XP is from 2002, right?
The problem is, XP is probably too old to properly handle your hardware.
You can check for drivers on your computer manufacturers site and see if they have an alternative driver list, however, you MIGHT have to go without a RAID setup. Your drivers are too new. Some punctuation next time would be helpful. Your post is almost impossible to read.
Why is slipstreaming SP2 "not" an option ? ?

Sounds like a HOMEMADE XP CD to me...

That would be the fan then. Make sure it's not blocked and read my previous post.what about a concrete surface to put it on?PP28L is the model NUMBER.You could try it.

Keep in mind that the cooling pad will allow the laptop to function efficiently on all surfaces.

As for the model number, can you just confirm whether or not it's a Dell XPS M1530?
http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=dell+m1530&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=ok, The first number I submitted was the computer itself. the newest one. PP28L or something is the MODEL NUMBER..Ok, M1530 is the one I needed to know. You typed ML530 the first time.

Looking at the pictures available online, it seems the fan is at the back, left of the screen. Make sure that is not blocked.

It seems overheating is a big problem with this laptop.
http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=xps+1530+overheating&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

Anyhow, You know my other suggestions.Thank you so much! Please don't PM me for HELP, Alias. Keep all RELATED conversations on the forums for future reference.

Anyways, this is what you gave me:
>LINK<

It looks....PRETTY weak...

This is one of the cooling pads I have:

With a Dell XPS like yours, you're going to want one with two or more fans spinning at around/above 2000rpm.

Solve : Display settings in Vista?

Answer»

Is there any way to set Vista to GO straight to display SETTINGS when I right click the desktop and click properties? Or alternitavly restore the original tab LAYOUT?There is no "Properties" under right click in Vista.
You can click Start, type in desk.cpl in "Start search" and hit Enter.
or...
you can create shortcut...
Right click on desktop empty space, click New>Shortcut, PASTE desk.cpl into the field, name it whatever you want, and you're done.Sorry "personalise" (spelt with a Z to be technical). So no way to have it old style aka: Right click on desktop and click properties like in Win95-XP?

Well,
It seems as if you have been doing a lot of torrent downloading by the looks of it. KEYMAKER.exe, KEYGEN.exe. Before we go further... Let me point out something. Downloading torrent's has a high RISK of viruses, Trojans, worms, etc. Also, most torrent's are illegal. But, let me help...

Since the program directed you to the proper directories of the worms, this makes life easy(er). let us look at the first one:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\NetworkService32\117.crack.zip\crack.by.ORiON\crack.exe

Go to My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista) > Click Local Disk > WINDOWS > system32 > NetworkService32 > 117.crack.zip

Delete the 117.crack.zip folder and there goes virus 1. Do this with the rest and it should work. If it doesn't just tell us.

Hope This Helps,

Please don't instruct the OP to do anything, as this may cause the problem to be even worse. And torrenting may be illegal, but most likely, if you got it from a reputable source (in torrenting circles), then it will be clean. The OP probably downloaded the .zips from an unknown source.OK,

Maybe I didn't give the BEST idea . But hey, that's what I would do.Uninstall all of your cracks, keygens, warez, patches.... whatever they are calling them now before posting for help in the malware removal forum.

We will not help anyone pirate anything or help to make the system work with pirated software. But if you mess up your computer in the process, we will help you fix it.
Cracks and keygens are commonly used terms for specific types of pirating. Cracks are demos that have been "cracked" (hence the name), so that the full version is accessible. Keygens are programs that create random STRINGS of numbers and letters to fool the demo that you've bought the full version. Warez is the general term for all pirated or pirating related software.I followed the paths but none of those files exist in system 32
Thy this:

1) Go into the folder where you think they are.
2) Go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Scroll Down And Check "Show Hidden Files and Folders"

This may show the files if there "Hidden"
But this may not work.

Hope This Does Though!

Also how would i GET the dust out i'm scared of opeing my computer What about those zipped dmp files?

Your processor temperature seems to be at 44C. If this is while your computer is idle, it seems little bit too high. Your processor max temp is listed at 72C.
Does the shutdown happen when you're doing something in particular?

Cleaning the computer is not a big thing to do.
Buy a can of compressed air.
Turn computer off.
Remove side panel.
Using compressed air, blow all dust, and garbage out. When spraying fans, hold the blades with a pencil, so the blades won't get damaged from spinning.
With side panel off, turn computer on, and see, if all fans are running.
If so, turn computer off, put the side panel back, and you're done.Quote from: Broni on May 14, 2009, 05:50:29 PM

Solve : Word 2003 templates/Macros installation??

Answer»

Hi FOLKS,

I have been given a MACRO for use with Word 2003 and the instructions are to paste it into the 'Application Data>Microsoft>'Templates' folder. However, I can't find these folders on my PC despite selecting 'show all files/folders' and doing a full search.
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1 and MS Word 2003 SP3. Can anyone offer any advice as to where I am supposed to put this thing?
Thanks,
Fred. The folder "Application Data" is a hidden folder. You have to change your settings so you can see hidden files and folders.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/show-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-vista/

To see hidden files & folders do the following:

1) Go to the folder where the hidden FILE is.
2) Go to tools > Folder Options > View > SCROLL down and check "Hidden Files & Folders"
3) That will show the hidden folders. They will appear in a light shade.

Hope This Helps,

No. I CHECKED -- there's everything I had in Vista in there. Regardless, I don't need that now. I just opened recovery manager (I feel like a moron now) and I'm about to restore to factory after posting this. WOO, now I don't need my discs This time I'll make some like it asks -.-;Woo! It didn't really work - I had to mount my primary partition onto my D:\ drive, and REBOOT. From there, it opened a restore menu from the protect.english FILE in there, and I ended up restoring my computer to factory. The restore automatically remounted my OS onto Windows Vista Home Premium x64-Bit on my C:\ drive, too! Well, now I know to never do that again. Anyways, thanks so MUCH for your help, guys! =]WOW...

Solve : Dell 2005fpw Monitor *censored*!!!! Please Help?

Answer»

I had a Dual Monitor set up with 1 dell Lcd widescreen monitor and 1 crt 17in monitor. I Installed a new graphics card on my computer and lost my Dell monitor, it wont display anyting. When I plug the dell monitor into my computer my computer reckognizes the monitor and shows up in the system(my crt monitor still works) I set the resolution to native for the monitor and still shows nothing. I have the latest drivers installed for the dell monitor and still displays nothing?

Now heres the strange test i've ran that do something. When i start in safe mode, and switch monitor cables from the crt to the dell the dell monitor works, if i try to save settings and shutdown the dell monitor after it shutsdown doesn't work anymore and windows starts as normal.

The other strange test if i swap monitor cables the dell will turn on briefly but then shut off......

I've tried everything, i remember having TROUBLE setting up my dual monitors but for some reason my dell monitor just won't come out of stand by.

PLEASE I BEG OF YOU!!! help me, what can i do to make this THING work?? My thoughts are delete all monitors and then try to just get the dell to work, then try and do dual monitors??? The ony problem is i deleted both monitors in the device manager, shut down, connect dell monitor only restart, and it displays nothing doesn't even come out of stand by mode???

You tell me what to do i'll try and tell you what happensPower off your computer completely. Plug in your CRT monitor. Power ON the computer, Tap F8 key and enter Advanced options. Select "last known good configuration" and see if it will display again. If that works shuts down and plug in your second monitor, restart, go and back into Device Manager to reinstall your Video Drivers, then follow directions here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307873

If "last known good configuration" will not let you back into your system, Start Over, tap F8 key on booting, select VGA mode instead of "last know good config" You will then enter windows using a basic video driver...Next, if you can get to the desktop, go back into Device Manager and reinstall your video drivers, then follow the instructions in the link........good luck

OK so i have rolled back to a previous date but it was Directly after i installed the video card software, and i still can't get the monitor to come out of standby....... Is there anyway i can change the driver for the dell monitor and use the driver that it uses in safemode..... in safemode the monitor seems witch won't work unless i use the crt monitor and then switch the cable to the dell monitor then it will work??Could you please specify the make and model of the computer and the type of graphics card that you recently added, along with the old graphics card if one existed.

I have an AMD atholon 64 2.2ghz, asus motherboard, Xp Sp2, My old graphix card was a litefast Nvidia 128mb PCI card, I replaced it With an His Radeon hd3650 AGP 512mb card.

So here is whats up, on my old graphix card everything worked, when i would start my computer both monitors would turn on and a clone would show on both monitors untill it gets to windows. And then would work as it should. I recently updated the driver for the litefast card, to run google skecthup but then my dell monitor would not work after I started my computer up, no matter what i tried i could not get the dell monitor to work, it would work but would not be in RIGHT resolution......So i did a system RESTORE and the dell monitor worked properly again.

The problem i believe is with the driver for the dell monitor and windows. Something in there is not right. I need to know if there is some way to reset this.

I was able to have dual monitor functionality using my friends monitor, then if i were to switch the cable between his monitor and my dell the dell would turn on (my friends monitor is an hp lcd 17) Once the dell turned on i could adjust resolution move everything over and it would work fine but if i tried to restart it would not turn on when i started the computer only the crt would turn on, but when i got to windows it was acting as if both monitors were working.

I also plugged the dell monitor into my girlfriends LAPTOP and it worked, although her laptop is vista and there is no driver made by dell for vista, It would work but the color was not right, but the resolution was correct and in the monitors native resolution.

So as you can see there seems to some error displaying on the dell, also my dell monitor has a dvi and d-sub port, I currently have the d-sub connected to a converter that converts it to dvi then into the graphix card(came with it, also has been tested for functionality and works)......is there a cable that goes dvi-dvi, would that potential solve the problem???.... I still think its something to do with the way windows is trying to display things on the dell monitor.

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!Go into CMOS and try setting your new card as primary....There might not be a specific setting for that, but you might try disabling the ONBOARD graphics card and then rebooting, to see where that gets you. I should have mentioned I removed the pci card..... Luckly i did get it to work, My dell monitor has 4 inputs a DVI, D-sub, S-video, component.... I Had the monitor connected D-sub to dvi converter into my graphix card, now i have a DVI cable from the monitor to the computer and that work..... I will say something for anyone who might be reading this. I WILL NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER!!!!!!!! purchase any dell product again, Customer support is *censored* unless you own a dell pc, They never update there driver(This monitor will never perform right in Vista because Dell has not made a driver and won't, just like the Dell DJ that i purchased 6mo before I bought a vista laptop that it will never connect to) The problem i believe was with the driver that was installed somewhere on my computer and using the Dvi cable made it use a different driver for the monitor. Also did i mention that before i struggled getting it to work with the D-sub to D-sub on the old graphix card, so it might also just be the driver that the monitor uses on D-sub thats the problem. Oh well thnx for the helpno prob. bob

Solve : How do I get rid of "Napster"??

Answer»

I am running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. I want to delete "Napster". I go to Control panel - open Programs & Features - Right click on Napster - uninstall. I get a panel that says: "Setup.exe has stopped working". It also says I will be notified when the solution is FOUND. Any suggestions about what to do to delete "Napster" except hope some answer is found? Thanks Bob Try reinstalling it, and then uninstalling it again. It might be that the uninstall file or another component is corrupt and needs to be reloaded.

You could try going into the Napster folder and look for a "uninstall" file. It's probably on your C drive, Program files.I have to agree with BLOCKHEAD. This is a common problem. Re-install the most up to date version of Napster and then try uninstall. You could try http://www.revouninstaller.com/Good call Karnac but I would certainly try Blockheads way first then atleast there is no installing new software with possible mistakes. If that does not work then yeah last resort try the software. Two methods...

Launch the installer and choose Uninstall instead of Install.

How do I uninstall the Napster Software from my PC?

If you are receiving an error message while trying to uninstall Napster, it may be possible that the installer files necessary to uninstall the program have become corrupt or are missing. To resolve this, click here to use a new instance of the Napster software installer to uninstall Napster. When you are prompted to Save or Run, select Run. Once the Installshield wizard begins, you will be asked to either Uninstall or Repair the Napster application, choose Uninstall.

Solve : How badly did I screw myself (dual boot)??

Answer»

Actually, I had a couple people tell me it's in the ram but let me quote somebody else who really seemed to know what she was talking about. She says that drive X: is allocated to the boot CD.

"Drive X: is not on your PC at all. Traditionally, this is the drive letter allocated (during boot from CD-ROM), to the contents of the CD-ROM itself: that is why it is "write-protected". Once you finish running the CD-ROM, drive X: disappears again. It is not anywhere on your hard disks and does not interfere with any hard-drive setup. You can forget about drive X: as being a potential problem."

I think I can go with that.If you are using Ghost i would suggest if you are going to re-do your existing dual boot then install each OS to a seperate drive.
In this scenario you use the BIOS to switch between which OS to boot.
The other advantage is your Ghost images will work when you need them.
An image of a dual-boot won't always restore properly.Wow...that's a great idea. Never heard that suggested before. The only problem I can see, at least as it relates to me, is that I only have 2 drives. If I put an OS on each, I won't have true backup security. Not to mention having to use both drives to backup each other, which means using up double the space. But if I had 3 drives or more, this would absolutely be the best option. Thanks for that.

I am curious about your last sentence though. Why do you say that? What potential problems have you seen/heard about with restoring a dual boot via ghost? It never worked for ne with a dual-boot setup...period.
When Windows is installed to a drive even if it's a different partition it writes files to the root of C:...
If the bootsector becomes flubbed neither OS will boot in some CIRCUMSTANCES...
And a Ghost restore doesn't always fix it.
Just my experience
As far as backing up Ghost has to backup to another drive/partition....
So in your case i'd back up XP to the Vista drive...then burn it to CD/DVD and vice versa...Thanks patio, good to know.

Which files in Vista are responsible for booting? I've got Vista running exactly how I like so I'm not gonna ghost my old Vista backup, I'll keep this ONE. I did however already ghost XP to the other partition on this drive. All I need to do now is configure the dual boot and I'm thinking if I simply copy the files responsible for booting from my Ghost backup and overwrite the current files, it should work, shouldn't it? Well, just thought I'd let you all know that, utilizing Ghost v14.0 & VistaBootPro, everything is working again. Better than before in fact, as my Vista OS wasn't working right before all this happened. Now it runs like a dream . I'm actually glad this happened. And I have to stress something which is a pet peeve of mine: everyone should be using Ghost or similar backup/restore program. If you go through your computer life without using Ghost or something like it, you are really missing out. Not only does it save your a$$ in situations like this, but it also COMPLETELY irradicates the threat of CATCHING a virus. I haven't used an antivirus program in years and my system is clean as a whistle. If you do catch a virus, you simply restore your last backup and presto: every trace of that virus is gauranteed GONE. No antivirus software running in the background means you have resources freed up & make no mistake, antivirus solutions use up a lot of resources. If you've ever found yourself on these forums worried about your system or your data, get Ghost, an extra hard drive, and make life easy on yourself.

I'd just like to extend a final thank you to everyone here who helped me with this, especially patio & jj3000. There's no better man than he who goes out of his way to help a stranger. It's nice to know that people have your back in times like this.

Shant D.Good news indeed shantd and glad to hear you are fixed up ! !

Stop by anytime...

Solve : Reinstall Vista?

Answer»

OK so i have my toshiba laptop, which was preloaded with Vista Home Premium. I have a copy of Vista Home Premium OEM. Can I use a different OEM disc and use it for the toshiba laptop? As long as I use the product key that came with the laptop? No.
OEM dvd's will only load on the brand machine they were created for...
There are of course exceptions to this but most times the install will HALT at some time and let you go no further.
The bad part of this is now your data is gone.

Contact Toshiba and request a factory Restore DVD...WELL, it was an OEM i purchased from NEWEGG, so it wasnt specific for any brand computer. I wanted to use the purchased one on my toshiba.Okay, something just got lost in translation...

Lets say it this way.

OEM Disc - Normal copy from Newegg

Manufacture Disk - Install disc for that machine (Ex. - Dell Vista Install Disk / HP Windows XP install disk)

An OEM disk from Newegg can install on any machine, so long as you have the PROPER drivers to install later.

A manufacture disk usually only works on that brand of computer, since the special drivers all built into it,and will install themselves when you install Windows. Normally you can't install a Dell version on a HP, but sometime it might work.

UPDATE: Let me point out the OEM is a manufacture disk, but it can be a bit confusing talking about. For the time being, I would suggest we talk about the issue this way.Ok.

I DO NOT have any manufacturer DISCS. What I am doing is I am reinstalling vista on the toshiba laptop with an OEM disc from newegg. What I am asking is if I can actually use this disc, but with the product key that had come with the laptop. I already used the product key that came with the disc on my desktop, so I wanted to really know if I could use this OEM disc and use the product key that came with the toshiba. Hope I cleared it up lolNevermind, now I know it DOES work. Just re-activated. Thanks for the help guys

Look in the list of pending files and check for files in the "softwaredistrubution" folder.
What exactly am I looking for, there? I have quiet a bunch there.Sorry about the last post. What I was ment to SAY was, in the "My Pending Files", look for pending files that belong in the "softwaredistribution" folder.

Close that folder, open up Comodo Firewall 3 and click on the link that says "waiting for your review". There should be quite a few files there.

Look at the picture I ATTACHED. The entry with the red box around it is a file which belongs to a certain update. If you notice an entry similar to this, tick it, click on Move To, and click on My Own Safe Files. Make sure you tick all entries related to this.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by ADMIN]In "My Pending Files", I have a bunch of files in the "softwaredistribution" folder, but they're all listed as "modified". Then, what particular file am I looking for?

I can't see any "waiting for your review" link.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]CHOOSE the entries listed as New / Modified, click on Move To, and click on My Own Safe Files. Does it install now?

-- edit --

Click on 'Status' near the top of the 'My Pending Files' window to show all entries that are New or New / Modified. All files, not only in softwaredistribution" folder are either new, or modified. Should I move them all?Go ahead and move them to safe files. After all, you are the malware removal specialist, there shouldn't be any malware entries in there.LOL....LET me try...It didn't work, because most files were already there.Download the update from HERE. After it has finished downloading, disconnect from the internet, exit COMODO Firewall Pro 3 by clicking on it's icon in the system tray and choosing Exit, and try to install the update. Did it install this time?I found the solution here: http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3/windows_update_fails_with_comodo_merged_threads-t16987.60.html

Solve : Slow or freezing on a Vista Gateway Machine....?

Answer»

Here's the gist of the problem. I restart computer and turn on World of Warcraft and play for awhile. Turn it off and try to start a web browser. It either takes forever for it to load or when it does the it just says connecting and never brings up a web page. Now I have this same problem when I turn on a P2P program, Vuze. Its like something gets turned on in the background that is sucking all my memory. But I've used a few memory freeing programs and it doesn't seem to help. The only thing that helps is to restart the computer. Even when I restart it it will take 5 minutes or more to log off just to restart. I'm wondering if this is something in Vista I don't know how to fix. I'm running.....

Gateway GT5657e
Vista Home Premium SP 1 (up to date)
AMD 2.2 dual core processor

You're destroying your connection with Vuze.

Ok but this happens even when I haven't had Vuze on. It happens when I'm playing WoW and even when I've just reset the computer. AND I just swapped out my modem today to see if that is it. So far its not. Its frustrating because I can't TELL if its a processor/memory thing or a net connection thing. Hm... is this the only computer in the house doing this?

I fear you may be the victim of a botnet. That botnet might be doing the same thing I thought Vuze was doing. Head over to the Virus section here and see if they can't help you.Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

2. Go Start>Run (Start SEARCH in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Solve : Microsoft Word 2003 - The text is encoded/encrypted?

Answer»

I'm at university at the moment and I'm trying to open some seminar notes and practice exams from the uni-webpage.

When I try to open it, Microsoft Word 2003 shows it in encoded/ENCRYPTED text. I've installed the Microsoft Compatibility
Pack but that hasn't made any difference.

This is what the text looks like:

ÐÏ à¡± á > þÿ D j þÿÿÿ A B C y þ ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ@= ðÍ øað? µ³J l˜ ß

I can't revise or do my WORK, please help me. Thanks. The original file is a *.DOC file? Or a *.DOCX file?

Are you trying to open it directly from the webpage or are you saving it to your computer first?

There's a chance the file might also be corrupt.

Provide as much information as you can.I've tried to save the file then open it, and also to open it directly from the website but it's always encrypted. It isn't just one file, it's about 30 or so.

Sorry I'm not that smart with PCs.

A few are .doc files but the majority are .ppt. Are the .ppt ones powerpoint files? Because it's trying to open the files in Word :s

But yeah, a few are .doc. None are .docxIf the *.ppt files are trying to open in Word, that would be part of the problem. Do you also have Powerpoint? If so, right click one of the PPT file, select "Open with...", select POWER Point from the list, and check "Always use the selected program..." then click ok.

Have you tried opening a DOC file yet? Are they doing the same thing?

On a side note, could you edit your first post and remove all the "ÿ"s from it. Without a line break it's making the page display weird.Ah I see. Yes I do have Powerpoint but it's not in the list. I clicked on browse but I can't find it. It's definately in my Start->All Programmes->Microsoft Office->Powerpoint (Vista).

I tried opening the .doc files but it does the same thing. I don't understand why. This is quite a NEW laptop, and it's been like this since the start.

Sorry, I'll edit 1st post.Follow the INSTRUCTIONS here for the file association problem then.

Still looking to see why your DOC files might be having a problem.Which instructions?

Can you browse through "Start"?

Thanks for your help btwSorry, suppose it helps if I give you the link...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918957Haha. thanks v muchThat's wierd. The *.doc files are working properly now too. No more encoding.

Thanks very much for your time and help
Much appreciatedGood to hear.

Which resolution suggested there fixed it for you?Method 1: Repair Office or the Office program

I couldn't do the 2nd, and didn't need to I guess.

Thanks again

Solve : Laptop question, specifically keyboard related?

Answer»

Hi! I have a question - I have a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop (using Vista), which has been wonderful so far. The only problem I'm having, and it is a recent problem, is that while typing in forum boards, emails, any sort of document, my cursor suddenly disappears, and I am having to constantly stop re-click the cursor to where I am typing. For example, it has done this 7 times just during what I've typed here.

Separately, but I'm thinking is related, while playing World of Warcraft, occasionally the game window will minimize on it's own - I'm thinking that it is keyboard related as well.

Could be some hidden command I've hit on the keyboard causing the problem? Or something I'm not familiar with at all? I do know that I'm about to chuck the laptop out of the window!

I thank you in advance for your help!Quote

I have a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop (using Vista), which has been wonderful so far.
The words 'so far' indicates that this is a new laptop, am I correct?

If so, this is a common problem many people have with new laptops.

When you type your response, watch out for your touchpad and be careful not to hit it with your thumb or palm of your hand.Well, it is rather new, I've had it for a few months though. Your response made me wonder, my touchpad has a lock button, which supposedly disables it, which I keep locked - wonder if that's not working.

Thank you for your response, will do some more checking!Hmmm....A few months old? When did this problem start?

When typing large amounts of text, try disabling the touch pad with the button and see how your writing fairs.

The problem has just started recently, within the LAST day or so.

I do keep the touch pad disabled, all the time. As I'm typing this, I am typing one finger at a time, to ensure no other keys are touched and it did it twice, once I noticed when I hit the space bar, but not everytime I hit the spacebar. Another time when I hit the 'p' key. I've also noticed today that when using the scroll wheel on my mouse that it leaves the current page, and I have to click to activate the current page. Interesting....

Does it happen only in the Internet Browser, or in other applications as well?

Any recent downloads/installs/hardware changes?Good question, I just did some testing in a Word document, and it did do it there as well, after I had typed 3 LINES. I use Firefox.

As for downloads, the only recent downloads I can think of are for World of Warcraft add-ons, I use a CURSE client, and download updates regularly for the game add-ons. As my daughter recently moved back home, (and I do wonder if she's done something!) there has been increased traffic to Myspace (blech) and Facebook, etc. Update - ok, ran Search and Destroy, killed a couple of process that were running all the time (one of them being the Curse client), found some unknown thing - deleted - and the problem hasn't come back.

I feel silly for bothering all of you, but I really thank you for your help.

You have a nice forum, I PLAN to stick around!I'm glad you got it sorted. What was this unknown thing? Any ideas?Well, we killed several processes that were running at start-up, some of them are MSN Messenger, my Blackberry software, my Curse client, which I found was running non-stop, and something called Turbine Download Manager, which I don't even know what that is!Quote from: Morgaine on May 16, 2009, 12:09:04 PM

Solve : Vista not detecting CPU or RAM?

Answer»

My computer is a Lenovo T60, which I got from a friend of mine who had been running XP on it. Recently I upgraded to Vista x32 and have been having no problems (about a MONTH of running) until about a week ago. Vista stopped detecting my CPU and RAM when I GO under the SYSTEM settings.

I try running a game and it says system requirements not MET, game requires .9GHz, detected 0.0GHz. However, I played the game many times before the ERROR on Vista.
Other games just won't run anymore and I'm thinking this is the problem.

I should have 2 GB RAM and two 1.46 GHz Processors, but Vista says I have no RAM or CPU (and I'm posting this on my computer with the problems)

To me it'd seem that if my CPU or RAM wasn't working at all I wouldn't even be able to keep using this laptop, right?

Solve : Disable "switch user" in the registry?

Answer»

Hello there

I want to get rid of the "switch user tab" at log in, as i am the only user i don't see the need for it to be there.

I don't have the group policy editor, but i know you can CONFIGURE the setting in the registry, if anybody could give me instructions, on how to do it,

windows VISTA home premiumIf you are refering to the "guest" account I don't believe it is necessary to edit the registry to remove that account. From the Start menu, click on your user account. It should be an icon or a little square picture at the top of the Start menu. I don't have Vista in front of me at the moment, but TRY that and look for the options to "edit" or "disable" other user accounts.

You might ALSO try right clicking My computer>click Manage>and when Computer Management pops up, in the left pane, click on "local users and groups". Under that, click on "users". Then on the right side of the screen, right click on the "guest" account, click properties, and put a check in the box that says "account is disabled", save your settings and that's it.

If you are refering to the "guest" account I don't believe it is necessary to edit the registry to remove that account. From the Start menu, click on your user account. It should be an icon or a little square picture at the top of the Start menu. I don't have Vista in front of me at the moment, but try that and look for the options to "edit" or "disable" other user accounts.

hi, i do not have a "local users and groups" option there, i am the only user with an admin account, but i do not want to have the "switch user" tab there every time i turn the computer on, there are no other accounts , just me.

Hi,

I managed to find away

Navigate to the FOLLOWING branch.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Create a DWORD (32BIT) value named HideFastUserSwitching by right clicking on the side of the editor and selecting new DWORD(32BIT) VALUE.

Set the value for HideFastUserSwitching to 1

Not what i was expecting , but it doe's work, and i did back up the registry before hand

In the future you can just open control panel -> User Accounts. The option is there like Patio said "Fast User Switching"

I'm guessint Patio has his Start bar set in Administrator or Advanced mode I forget exactly...

Solve : How do I run a restore with a DVD??

Solve : So Many Vista Problems!?

Answer»

I'm getting no error message if I attempt to boot the computer ordinarily, just a blank screen. The only NORMAL thing is the mouse is still active.

The computer is an eMachines 3260 with 2Gb RAM, and a Celeron processor.

I was in the middle of installing a driver update for my X-Fi Gamer sound card and I think Windows decided to update at the same time. I've tried rolling the system back to before the updates, but it's not happy with that even.

I can't even install things like a virus checker that it claims I've uninstalled.

I now have a computer with no sound, it says that the service has been turned off, I go into the services to TURN that on, and it says that I can't because I'm in Safe Mode.

Also I am unable to uninstall the NVIDIA driver that I tried to install earlier, I can't click it in the Remove Programs box. I tried installing over the top so I could uninstall, but that doesn't work. *shrug*

It's been like this for a week now, I'm at a loss!

Thanks for any help!I guess, Recovery CD is your best shot.
How old is your computer, anyway? It's about 3 years old. I was stupid enough to use an upgrade disk to change to Vista, so I had problems with that and spent a lot of money calling Microsoft and they used up all my validation attempts.Quote from: elkster on January 10, 2008, 01:14:48 AM

This statement doesn't make sense...they will either validate your install or not.
What version of Windows are we working with here and where did it originate from ? ?It makes sense. I couldn't get the thing to install, so I ended up on the end of a phone line to Microsoft. Neither of us could understand each other, me being English and he being Indian. He kept telling me to validate my install, which I did, which ended up using up my validation attempts. I can't remember the EXACT details, but that's what happened.

Anyway, We are working with Vista Premium which I bought from a shop. I have just done a recovery disk install of XP followed by the upgrade of Vista plus any drivers that I've needed to update. That's all so far, but it's still not happy.Quote from: elkster on January 10, 2008, 01:14:48 AM

I already said it was a stupid thing to do. I only came here for help, not insults. We're not insulting you...just trying to get to the root of the problems here.
After you re-installed XP to do the Vista update did you re-install all your drivers including the MBoard drivers ? ?
When Vista installs are there any error messages ?
Did you check the MS site to see if this machine can run Vista ?

The biggest issue with Vista so far is drivers. The automatic search for drivers in Vista is not what it should be.
If the system is bootable i suggest DLoading and installing Everest Home.
This will tell you exactly what hardware is in that machine and you can hunt down the Vista drivers for all the components.
We can assist if you like but lose the attitude...I'm sorry, I honestly wasn't trying for attitude

The machine is able to run Vista, I did check up before I bought the upgrade. Anyway, for now the problems are solved. I did as Broni suggested and WENT for the recovery CD. Everything is fine so far. Only time will tell. Give me a couple of weeks and if all else fails, I'll be back to XP.No Problem and Welcome Aboard !

Vista takes some getting used to...

Solve : Cannot adjust brightness or use function key?

Answer»

I've upgraded my Sony Vaio SZ laptop to vista doing a clean installation. I cannot adjust the brightness though, NEITHER can I use my FN KEY to adjust the volume or brightness.

I can adjust the volume through the tray icon but cannot find anywhere to adjust the brightness.

Can anyone please help?

Laptop Spec:
Sony Vaio SZ1XP/C
Intel CORE Duo
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeFOrce Go7400Since you did a clean install all your drivers will need to be re-installed...you will need Vista drivers.
MBoard chipset drivers go FIRST.Sorry forgot to MENTION I have installed all drivers and utilities already. I got them from the Sony website. In Device Manager there are two unknown devices alsoThat would mean you didn't install all of the drivers. Are you sure you installed the chipset? Did you even check to make sure your computer and all of its devices are compatible with Vista? After doing some research, I have found that the Sony Vaio SZ1XP/C is only available with Windows XP, not Windows Vista.

That may be a problem....I've found the solution. Vista is available for my model as you can get the update drivers for vista on the sony website, which I downloaded and installed in the specific order mentioned but I had to download a file from the microsoft site that would activate the hotkeys

Solve : RAM Hardware Issue for Vista?

Answer»

Hello,

I just bought a new laptop and also a new 2 GB Kingstons 5300 SODIMM 667 mHz RAM (the original memory was 1 GB... had to upgrade because Vista eats so much memory.) I bought two of these 2 GB RAMs. When I finished installing my two 2-GB RAM, the BIOS recognizes as that there is 4 GB of RAM available but Vista only recognizes to only to be 3 GB available. What happened to that extra 1 GB of RAM that is suppose to be available? Shouldn't Vista recognize 4 GB of RAM instead of 3 GB? Can you help me out to see what's the problem? Thanks. I appreciate it.Basically your problem is that 32 bit Vista can't utilize 4 gb of RAM. This article describes it better than I can.
http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251

This is a limitation of 32 bit computer architecture. The only solution is to switch 64 bit Vista instead. (Switching to 64 is not hassle free though.)It will still use most of it...i'd say if the system is running fine don't worry about the way your RAM is being reported...
And Deerpark is correct...migrating to 64Bit Vista has had many a person lose PLENTY of sleep.

Why is it you want to copy it? If it's to make a backup then that's perfectly legal. And if you use the backup as you would your original disc. I.e. only to REINSTALL Vista on the computer you've have a license for then Windows will still be genuine.

Solve : load drivers from USB stick?

Answer»

Hi, I want to reload windows but because I have SATA hard drives I need to install the driver at the F6 prompt. I normally do this via the floppy drive but it seems to be acting up and wont read discs. I'm not sure if there is a way to clean it or not, but my question is can I load the needed driver from a USB stick? Thanks.

Motherboard ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
Primary HD 80GB SATA
Secondary 250GB SATA
CPU AMD Athlon 64

Windows setup should load the drivers required for this... I have SATA HDD drives and didn't have to install any additional drivers in order to successfully install Windows.2 things you can try:
Radio Shack still sells a floppy head cleaner...you add a few drops of alcohol on a fabric type floppy and RUN it in the drive for 20 seconds.

Another option is to format a brand new floppy, copy the drivers to it and see if it works properly.
Head misalignment is the most common cause of this.

GX44 i have always had to have the drivers ready for a SATA drive with XP. It's never seemed to pick them up on it's own for me.

Vinney the only reason a USB stik might not work is that the XP setup process has not loaded USB drivers yet.Thats strange, Patio. It was a year ago I did this, but I'm positive I didn't run into any problems with this issue.

Until now, I just assumed it wasn't an issue. I may be re-installing Windows soon (I want to try Ubuntu to see what it's like) but I will let you know if I run into this problem when/if I do.

vinney, go with patio's advice then... All 3 major brands did the same thing...
Western Digital
Maxtor
Seagate

I found that if you SIMPLY continued with the installation XP would thrash around for a while and then say "no HDD found on system"

p.s. This happened with both newly FORMATTED and brand new drives. To my knowledge it isn't the actual SATA drive XP needs drivers for, but the SATA controller. The ones I've needed drivers for have also been RAID controllers... don't know if it's just a coincidence though. To me it's just inexcusable that these were not included in XP's release...
Vista BTW isn't much better.

But they can include a library of over 150 video drivers though... Quote

Vista BTW isn't much better.
I think, experiences differ.
I REINSTALLED Vista on SATA HD, and I also didn't have to install any extra drivers.
Or, maybe it happened because I used Compaq RECOVERY CDs, and those drivers were included?Yep.

GX44 Do me a favor when you do your XP re-install...
Check and see if at that point you can point the XP install to look for drivers on a USB stick and see if that option is available.
I can't recall if it is and this would be helpful knowledge for the Forum Users...

Thanx !OK.

Is it the case with Control Panel, as well? What happens if you open a simple EXPLORER?Yes this is the case with the control panel as well, any software i can open however, such as Norton on Internet Explorer, i re-booted my computer and it seems to be working fine now, but i've done that before and the problem returns. I'll see how LONG it takes before it does it again. It looks like Vista authentication problem, which I experienced few week AGO, and which was caused by Vista non-compatible program.

Solve : Vista user delete?

Answer»

I'm working on a computer for SOMEONE and they purchased it at Sams, it's a Vista machine. Sams created a user account called sams and they wanted rid of it. So I created a new ADMIN account with this persons name. Then I deleted every trace of the old sams account. But when I try to install a PROGRAMS, it puts in sams under the name box during the installation! How do I get rid of this? How exactly did you delete every trace of the Sams account ? ?
It's obviously STILL there.
You may be looking at a format and a clean install of Vista...
I find it pretty arrogant that a vendor would create an Admin account on a machine they are selling to someone...You're right, I must not have deleted everything. But I removed it from the typical places, then did a search of the c: drive for "sams" and didn't come up with anything.

MAYBE there's a trace somewhere in the registry?

Yeah it sucks the sams would do that, I think the computer was pretty cheap though. And it's a nice computer.HKEY_uSERS_.DEFAULT_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_ WINDOWSMEDIA_WMSDK_GENERAL

This key still listed the computer name as sams. Changed it and rebooted, but still the same thing.Does this help?....

http://vistasupport.mvps.org/change_registered_owner_name.htm

You could also open regedit and do a search for "Sams" and change any applicable entries.

Solve : Windows Vista System Registry Editor Help?

Answer»

Thank you for coming to my TOPIC!Anyway, my annoying father went into my Windows Vista Dell Inspiron E1505 notebook and took away my laptop's wireless capability. He went into the system registry, I'm guessing, and did SOMETHING there. All he said to me when I questioned him was that it's hard to find and I won't get help online because all the manufacturers are different and my computer's 40 something digit hexagonal code to get to this thing wouldn't be there, and he only knows how to find it because he's been doing this for 20 years.
Now, I need help finding it. I'm currently on my laptop plugged into the internet router directly.
So, what I'm asking is this.
Does anybody on this website know how to find this so called code, and possible help me through the steps into enabling my wireless card thing?
And don't worry, I'm not extremely stupid when it comes to computers.

Uhm, I suppose if anyone wants to reach my at my America Online Instant Messaging screen name, you can. It's mcrbabiixo.
Thank you!

Else (as I see it) your only other options are System Restore (if you're lucky it might contain a backup point prior to your father MESSING with the registry) or reinstalling Vista.

Solve : Windows Backup and Restore?

Answer»

After I had set up my new Lenovo (OS Windows Vista Business) last April I used BACKUP and Restore to backup the entire computer (7 DVDs). A couple of months later I had a major problem and had to reformat my pc back to its factory settings. After REFORMATTING I tried to use the backup disks (thus avoiding having to do a lot of manual labour). Backup and Restore told me that it couldn't restore from my disks because I Hadn't made a backup!

That was months ago. I had no choice but to install everything manually. I would now LIKE to make a new set of backup DVDs but would appreciate advice on how to get Backup and Restore to recognize them if I ever have to reformat the disk.

PS I have Lenovo Rescue and Recovery, but it apparently requires Norton AntiVirus which I have deleted.I'm not sure but I THINK you're not supposed to format the drive. Probably you just put the recovery discs in and it does everything for you, reformatting included. Thanks, Soviet Genius. I'll wait and see if other people agree with you before I start the time-consuming process of backing up on all those DVDs!

I emailed the manufactor of the external hard drive(western digital) and told them they could either tell me how to get my kids pics off of this P.O.S. or refund my money. OOOHHHH, I wonder if they will take me seriously.Wish i'd have known it was an eBook Western Digital...if you use the software that ships with those it uses a propietary file system DESIGNED to supposedly be more SECURE but everything i've read is less than a glowing review.
I'd be interested in WD's response and if there is in fact a workaround for this so keep us posted.

If in fact you do retrieve your data i'd suggest a clean wipe of that drive afterwards and not installing the software the 2nd time around.

Solve : Notice to all helpers: New Vista feature you should be aware of?

In Vista, there is a whole NEW boot menu, and I think that you should all be aware of it.
There is now a System Repair tool (I urge you all to check it out on a test computer the NEXT time you go to your friendly office store) that can be accessed via the Boot Menu (F8 key on startup)

It has a repair tool that GOES through and checks various issues that may be a result to system failure.

The menu option is titled "Repair your Computer"
A screenshot of it can be seen here:

This tool works excellently for fixing STOP issues, driver related problems, disk errors, and other things that may prevent the computer from starting...

I think it will work fine as a first diagnostic tool

FEEL free to ask any questions, comment, etc... I dont know the specifics of how it works, I did use it once on a STOP error, it got the computer back up and running in about a half hour (it can take a while... probably not best to do this off battery)

Solve : CPU all over the place. Internet shaky. What's wrong??

Answer»

Ok... I hope you good people can help me because I am about ready to throw in the towell and go for a clean install.

It all started with a new Samsung cellphone. They come with this nifty Samsung software called PC studio 3. I had installed it a few WEEKS ago but recently I found out that it totally messed up my USB connectivity with the cellphone. The phone did not show up anymore in my computer etc. So I decided to get rid of Samsung PC studio 3 today. I RAN a systemrepair to a point that the software should not be there anymore because I feared that it changed something on a level that I could not understand, and then I had to move heaven and earth to get the dreaded thing of my laptop. Finally I popped in the cd and it did uninstall.
This is where things start to get wacky....
When I look at the running processes There is VSMON.exe that pops up every few seconds on a completely random place in the list and then dissappears again.
And my CPU use is all over the place. Like, it fluctuates between 100 and 0 percent in a random way. Roughly it goes like 50, 70, 30, 90, 10, 100, 0 and back again. (Not exact numbers I cannot see a pattern in those.) Every second this changes.
And my internet keeps failing so I have to reboot every time to get it to work again.
So far I have tried cleaning the registry, clearing un used files. I scanned for spyware, scanned for and repaired mistakes.
I dunno what to do anymore
Will post a hijackthis report.

3. Download HijackThis:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
Post HijackThis log.Thanks!
I cannot do the first thing. I am of the cult of Firefox. IE is still installed but that's about it. I never use it.

I did the Super anti spyware scan in safe mode and it cleaned up 27 registry files and 1 memory file. But aftyer the reboot it had not saved a scanlog for some reason. But I think it worked because I rescanned the registry and it did not turn up anything on the second run.

The system restore: I think I did. I had to guess.
cd: it was the install cd from the PC studio 3 that came with the phone.

Well, it SEEMS that I solved the problem of the wacky internet.
Turned out that my firewall went bananas So I removed it and cleanly reinstalled it. CPU behaves normal again and so far the internet works.... *crosses fingers*

All that remains now is the problem of my Samsung G800 that appaerantly does not want to show up as a mass storage device anymore....Waaaah! It works!
Thanks for the advice Broni!!!! I really like those programs

Now I will take this as a lesson learned and never trust those nifty Media Player management synchronising crap ever again.

BTW: Is there anything else in my Hijackthis log that could do with a kick in the digital *censored*?I'm glad, your computer is better.
You'll need to fix couple of things in HJT. Also, when you post new log, please use current HJT version from my link:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html

1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries:

- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [1] Õ

- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [2] Õ

4. Click on "Fix checked" button.

5. Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

6. Restart in Normal Mode.

7. Turn System Restore on.

8. Run HijackThis again, and post back its log back here.Done it!
Here is a new log.

Solve : Internet stops working in firefox and IE7????

Answer»

System - HP m9000t - Q6600(quad) - 4GB ram - Vista

Here is what happens

I'll be on my computer surfing around and all of a sudden my internet connection seems to have stopped. Both Firefox 2.0.0.11 and IE7 will display "cannot display this page" but, MSN messenger and Full Tilt poker are still working. I click on connection and it looks normal, still working. I click on diagnose and repair and it thinks for a long time and then comes up with a window that says it cannot connect to Microsoft. The only solution to this problem that I have found is to do a hard reset(meaning just hold down the power button). If I just select reset or shutdown the computer seems to lock-up and sits on the shutting down screen. I also tried to hibernate the system and the same thing seems to happen since the system just stays on and doesn't shut off.
I am on broadband through Quest now, but I just moved and this was happening before with my Cable one Broadband. Also, my desktop has a wireless card and this problem comes even if I have it turned off

I've tried to search on this but I think my wordage might be causing too many other hits because I can't find anything similar. It seems to be happening more and more lately and is getting quite frustrating.

Thanks for any helpQuote

You don't want to do this too many times...

Let's hurry up, before you won't be able to connect at all...

1. Run free ESET Online Scanner at: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only
1. You will notice that the "Start" button is grayed out. Place a check mark at "Yes, I accept the Terms of USE". The "Start" button will become visible. Click on it.
2. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
3. You will be asked to install an ActiveX, click the "Install" button (Note: If you have a Firewall install you may have to approve the installation)
4. Once ActiveX control is installed click on the "Start" button to initialize the scanner
5. After initialization is COMPLETE uncheck\untick "Remove found threats"
6. Check\tick "Scan unwanted applications"
7. Click the "Scan" button
8. Once the scan is done, you will find a log in C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt
Post ESET's log.

2. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Print these instructions out.

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An ICON will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; pick Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
* Under "CONFIGURATION and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
* Click Close to exit the program.
Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.

3. Download HijackThis:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
Post HijackThis log.I tried the ESET in IE7 and it says "Error: initialize OnlineScanner Administrator rights required" But this is my computer and I am the only user. So ??

I'll keep going with the other stuff

thanksOK.Here are the logs
I only deleted the cookies

But you'll lose all settings, and bookmarks so save all you want before you do this.

MSN messenger works, so your internet connection isn't the problem. It's probably computer/browser issue. Try and see if IE7 will work now.I use firefox almost exclusively. Have reset IE7, we'll see if that helps - the problem is kind of random, so we'll just have to wait and see.Got up this morning and the computer was in the same snag again - firefox and IE7 just showed "cannot display the page" and my MSN messenger was up and running. I went into the device manager and verified that the ethernet and wireless cards have up to date drivers.

If it's connected through the router, connect it straight to the modem.
Disconnect modem from the power source. Wait 1 minute. Power it on.
Restart computer.
Go Start>Run, type in:

Solve : All I'm trying to do is delete it!?

Answer»

I'm having such trouble. I bought a used Dell Inspirion laptop computer from eBay and all I want to do is erase Windows XP which is installed on it and install Windows 2000 (which I prefer over the annoying a buggy XP) from CD-Rom disc. I would not have though that too complicated a task but I've been at for several hours now. I tried getting help at the computer furums at eBay but everything this guy suggested didn't work for me and I think it might have messed something up.

I had assumed that when I ran the Windows 2000 install disc that there would be some prompt asking if I wanted to reformat my drive and install Windows 2000 (like there usually is when you're installing OS). Instead, I got an error message that said the set-up was disabled because that version of Windows is older than the one currently on the system (duh lol).

The guy at the other forums said I'd need to delete the partition of the drive (C drive) on which Windows XP installed, however I don't know how to do that. He gave me a link to download Windows 98 boot disc file (boot98se.exe) and told me how to MAKE disc from the file he gave me but when I tried it, it didn't work like his explanation had said it would and I got confused and it seemed like the computer was doing something that I didn't understand and I didn't know how to get out of that menu or stop it so I just shut the computer off.

He then said to insert the CD-Rom for the Windows XP (which is just an re-installation disc for the SOFTWARE provided by Dell) and then to press D button when it got to this menu (I had to first change the boot order in BIOS so that the CD-Rom would boot first when I started the computer). He gave me further instruciton to get through menus but none of what he'd explained is what heppened when I tried pressing "D" and I didn't any menus like he described. This proceedure did not work when I tried booting from the Windows 2000 CD-Rom disk either.

This is totally frustrating! I'm about to just take the computer and get a new hard drive rather than sit through any more hours of trying to figure out how to do something which I assumed to be relatively simple as deleting operating system software.

I've had to delete OS in the past on other computers and it was never any problem. The discs always had that option when I LOADED them to reformat the hard drive and install the software from the disc but neither of these discs seems to have that option.
What model laptop is this?

What state is it in now? Will Windows XP still load?

This should get you a working bootdisk for what you need to do:
http://www.cse.unr.edu/~kvero/Bootdisks/wbootess.exe

The push 'D' thing he was talking about works on an actual Windows XP install, but not most restore programs. He was trying to tell you how to delete the partition using Windows XP setup, but since that's not what you're doing, it won't work.

It won't be necessary for you to go to the expense of buying a new hard drive. We'll get this sorted out for you, just be patient. Thanks The latop which I am trying to delete the software on is a Dell Inspirion 4150. It seems to run okay. I was worried I might have messed something up when I used the Windows 98 SE boot disc he had told me to use. He was saying it could be used to delete the partition but when I booted from the disk it seemed to have installed something and then I got a very long bunch of text on a grey screen that was saying about the hard drive being larger than 2gb and asking if I was sure I wanted to change something that it saying it was going to change about the hard drive and a warning that I could not use that section of the hard drive then in the future if I MADE those changes. I panicked and tried getting off that screen by pressing ESC and stuff but it wasn't working so I shut the computer off by switching off the power button. When I re-booted it normally there was an error screen about an error that it had and suggested I just restart from the last configuration that was working properly so I selected that and it seemed to sort that out. But I don't know what, if anything, was changed or rearranged by my having used that boot disc and whether or not deleting the C drive partition would erase that anyway. When I clicked on the link in your post is just said

"Forbidden. You don't have permission to access /~kvero/Bootdisks/wbootess.exe on this server."A friend of mine purchased a new laptop with vista preinstalled on it. He prefered XP because it required less memory to run compared to vista. He couldn't install XP using the installation disc, so he had to bring the machine to a computer shop to get vista removed. perhaps this is an alternate option?

(you will be charged)Yes, perhaps I could do that. I didn't know a computer repair shop could erase your hard drive for you but it would certainly save me further aggravation Sorry, looks like I can't directly link to the file.

Go here instead:
http://www.cse.unr.edu/~kvero/BootDisks.htm

And download Boot Disk Essentials. No don't bring it to a computer shop. There's a much easier (and cheaper) solution.
If you want to wipe the harddrive completely I suggest DBAN. If you run that on the laptop the harddrive will be wiped clean and you should have no problem installing win2k on it. quaxo: How should I use the file once I have downloaded it?

deerpark: I might try the software you mentioned if I can't get other methods to work. Thanks for mentioning it!

The computer I'm trying to wipe out is not the one with internet service though so I'm wary about downloading that program to the computer which I'm currently using, even though they assure that running the program in order to make the disk would not delete the files on the computer which you run the program.Don't worry you cannot accidentally wipe anything. In order to even be able to run DBAN you will need to PUT it on a floppy/CD/usb drive and restart the computer with the media in the computer. And even if you managed to get DBAN started on the wrong computer you will still have to acknowledge you want to wipe the drive.I downloaded and tried each version of the Dban software but could not get it to work. I tried the one where you save to CD-Rom and the one where you save it to floppy diskette and I even trued saving it to USB but none of the verisons worked when I tried booting the computer with them. It would just go to black screen for a few moments and then load Windows as usual. I wasn't able to try it with the USB drive after I had saved the program to the drive since that laptop computer would not boot from USB (I didn't see the option on the boot order menu).

I am am still back to square one trying to erase Windows XP. It's like it's a virus or something! So,how do you have your boot options set in the BIOS ?

If the laptop has a floppy drive travel to bootdisk.com.
DLoad a WinME bootdisk and use the file to create a bootable floppy.
Re-boot with the floppy in.
At the A: prompt type format C: /u and hit Enter.
For Volume label just hit Enter for none.
Put in your Win2K CD and re-boot and the setup process will start.

Solve : Used computer..... drive wiped clean...cant re-install windows.... HELP?

Answer»

I got a computer from my work that they wanted to get rid of. They wiped the drives clean and when i tryed to re-install windows I couldnt get it to read any of the discs that I have. I have cd and floppy discs.
It is a Dell computer.

I wanted to give it to the kids so that they will have a computer and leave my laptop alone.

All i need it to do is let them play games.... Can anyone help???What o/s are you trying to install? - if trying to start from CD should probably start with the BIOS reset to "Boot from CDROM".They gave me 3 floppy discs for windows NT and said that they should work...Can I use my vaio laptop to make cd's that will work on a dell pc? It has vista on it but i have another laptop (Compaq) that has XP on it.. would any of these work?? IM not that computer smart so im sorry if these QUESTIONS sound stupid.....Even Windows for Workgroups was more floppies than that...I don't think NT would fit on 3 floppies. What would my options be for making this computer run just for the kids to play games on?

Is it worth trying to fix??No Microsoft Windows fits on 3 floppys [I assume you mean they gave you 3.5 floppys?] - even W95 needed a CD. My suggestion for what it is worth if you just want a system for the kids to play with is find someone with a W98CD and install code who will let you use it - Microsoft no longer support W98 so pirateing the o/s is no longer an issue. To find out what is on the floppys stick one in a PC, open in MSDOS mode and at the C:> prompt type in a: to change to a: drive and then at the a:> prompt type in DIR and this will LIST what is on that floppy.Quote from: patio on January 05, 2008, 02:07:33 PM

You said it is a Dell, correct?
It would be good if you could post more info about the computer. Everything you can find. Model number, especially.

You're going to need install disks for an operating system. Either floppy or CD.
You might want to CHECK out eBay. I bet you could find Win98SE there, and not have to spend a lot of money.

Before you do that though, you might want to wait for some feedback here, after you identify your computer with more info. No need to buy something that won't work, RIGHT?

Solve : The configuration registry database is corrupt.?

Answer»

My HP Vista has began loading and my user profile will not load. The desktop reverts to error message saying.

Windows can"t load user profile and a temporary profile has been established. When I look in EVENT viewer the error codes 1502 and 1508 both SAY:

The configuration REGISTRY database is corrupt. I am struggling trying to restore my desktop. Please help!!!!!!!!!

I have TRIED everything I can findDid you try System Restore?Does it say anything else after:
The configuration registry database is corrupt
Usually there is some file mentioned. Now, this might seem like a question almost not worth asking, but have you completely restarted since this issue?
(Vista users are being suggested, with such great power saving technology, to leave their computers in Standby. Thus, why I asked)

Vista will usually correct this issue on reboot.

If he has Windows CD.

I had similar error couple of days ago, when I was reinstalling Win 2K, and apparently, it was pretty ugly trojan.

I have a Toshiba Sattelite laptop not even 5 months old I BELIEVE. Its my life Its how I'm getting through high school without it my life is going to be hard because I can't copy notes by hand due to the fact I'd spend 5 hours after school copying over hard copy notes and not getting to anything else but. My notes from school are on my laptop and I didn't back up my files (stupid I know).
I know somethings been wrong because I keep getting "Softwrap error1" poping for some time but didn't bother fixing it because someone told me it was okay.
Yesterday and today my laptop without even pressing the backspace key kept backing up when I was trying to type up an assignment.
I have Norton and Ive viris scanned and defraged it before somehow getting it stuck in a safety mode.
I also noticed it all started yesterday when I clicked on the limewire decktop icon it froze up and nothing really worked after. I have uninstalled limewire and than scanned and defraged it all.
Can someone please,please help me!
I need to get my laptop out of saftey mode.
Thanks,
vista_hate_meDo these from Safe Mode, if you're stuck there...

I'm going to try those instructions you gave me but because of teh spyware it keeps backing up the PAGE again and again the backspace key is still doing that.
After I TRY downloading all that will I be able to get rid of the spyware if I can even get it to download?
THANK you so much for your help!
Limewire is NOT a spyware. You can, however, get a spyware, and more, if you're not using it carefully.
Let me know what you can achieve regarding those programs.I have downloaded only 1 song with Limewire and now I can't get limewire to uninstall and my backspace key completely not functioning so spelling errors please excuse them as I can't really worry about them right now. I'm downloading AVG and doing that first scan you told me to do. My norton is 100% up to date and has detected ONO virirsses or spyware so we;ll swe what I can turn up with all this needless to dsay I"m on dail up so tghis will take awhileQuote

I'm downloading AVG and doing that first scan you told me to do.
I didn't ask you to download any AVG.Please remember:
You can only have one antivirus scanner installed at the same time, or else your computer will crash on start, which, is a potential problem...
Uninstall the one you dont want first.

The following will NOT solve the problem, but is a suggestion:
BTW: If you must use Limewire, I recommend using Frostwire, which is a Limewire duplicate, and uses the same network as limewire, but, without the text ads, and at a higher/non-limited speed
http://www.frostwire.com/

The following might help in the future:
Never use file sharing programs for anything more than music and video. Almost all .EXE and other program/archive files will have viruses.

Watching to see if this topic moves in the direction of viruses/spyware... let me know if you want it moved. If this laptop is 5 mos. old i'd be backing up my data and returning it ASAP...Quote
