Solve : Reinstalling Programs?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista on my C: drive. Long STORY SHORT, all my programs are on there, even paid ones, some of which I don't have registration numbers for. I screwed up the registry, and had to REINSTALL Vista on my D: drive.

Anyway to transfer over programs? Back-up and restore? I still have ACCESS to the C: and the D: installations.

Thanks
DominicPrograms cannot simply be copied /moved and expected to run properly...
Sorry. You may be out of luck.
However you may want to give the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard a try but i don't predict 100% success...

Solve : website colours display wrongly?

Answer»

On my new Vista Home Premium laptop - Medion from Aldi -
I accessed getsuk.org.uk a site I am taking over as webmaster.

I know the background colour should be the speckled GREEN that is available as background in Word - as that was how the previous webmaster had set up the site and how I VIEW it on my desktop computer.

However on my laptop it is speckled pinky mauve.

I looked at the National Trust website as that should have green panels but that
did not have the green it should either.

I have viewed both sites in IE7 and Firefox with the same results.

My photos display in the correct colours and I have made a DVD of the photos which displays correctly both on the laptop and on my TV.

My graphics card is
Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family and my drivers are up to date.

Is this something to do with Vista Aero? I tried changing settings there but have made no difference so far.

Is the computer faulty?

One very puzzled person!

Are you talking about the site www.getsuk.org?
Because on my computer the background on that site isn't green in IE or FF either. It's more a sandy/very light brownish COLOR.

Are you sure it's supposed to be green?

Same for me...in Flock (browser) in Ubuntu (o/s).Thanks both of you for your help!

I realise now that when I set up my desktop monitor I increased the green in the RGB as I found it easier on the eyes.

Do you know what is the usual/ recommended/factory percentage set up for RGB?

This would affect how anyone viewed my site - I NOTE that the two of you had
slightly different set ups. When I set all three RGB at 50 I get a more blue/mauve tinge than you did.

Is there a recommended Gamma setting?
Changing it didn't seem to make much difference on my desktop, but a lot of difference on my laptop.

Thanks again for GIVING me the clue to my problem!I also see a sandy/very light brownish color. Can you go back to default settings on your monitor and then, if change is desired, use that as a starting point? I had thought of doing that but have no way I can find to return to default settings on my monitor!

I am concerned because whatever background I set is obviously going to look different in different computers because of the monitor settings, so wonder what at what combination most people have their RGB set at?

My "color temperature = 9300"
So does mine on my Samsung CRT monitor, connected to my tower PC, which is the computer I used to view Dawn's site. But, that probably doesn't equate to Dawn's laptop. I bought a Notebook PC in July 07 and color on it is definitely different from color on my CRT monitor but I haven't experimented with color controls on the notebook. The color on the CRT monitor is the truer color.

Solve : windows defender wont stop scanning?

Answer»

running vista home premium on an acer /aspire T690.Intel(R) CPU [emailprotected] 1.60GHz, memory(RAM): 1014 MB. 32-bit OS. this system is less than 4mos. old. not only defender issue, but system has stopped shutting down. have run Norton 360 several times and it says everything o.k.. have just checked system info, and the Experience Index shows as unrated now. The rating is low @ 3.7 but I believe that is due to the video card/graphiics. It's an intel 946GZ chipset family. I've gone into the task manager and stopped the defender process, maybe, but don't know if I've actually fixed anything.any help would be apprediated, as you can tell I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing here. If this thing was a piece of antique furniture I could restore it, but, I'm lost. Guess I need a 10 yearold. thank-youWindows Defender is real-time protection which means it's supposed to run all the time. What do you mean "has stopped shutting down"?when I enter the start menu it gives me these options: 1)switch user 2) log off 3)lock 5)restart 6)sleep 7)shut-down. Generally, I choose the shut down option when Iwon't be back for awhile.Thank you for the response on the defender issue....and it won't shut down?
On the other hand, you may start thinking about adding an extra 1gig of RAM.1GB of RAM is fine for Vista...

Try this:
Press the windows key, and type com
Right click on the "Command Prompt" icon, and click "Run as Administrator"
Type the following in:
shutdown -s -f -t 12
and press ENTER
This will shutdown your computer and force the applications to all quit. This is a temporary diagnostic, Never Use This To Shutdown Your Computer Normally, overusing it may cause damage.

Start the computer back up, and see if you still have problem shutting down.

If you do still have problems shutting down:
What makes you think the problem is directly related to Windows Defender?
Your Windows rating is fine, the top windows rating is 5.9. This will not prevent your computer from functioning as normal.
again, thank you for the response. I'll try the method you described, but thought I'd explain myself better. It's not that I think the defender issue was a cause, more a symptom possibly of some kind of virus ?. what happens is once i press SHUTDOWN, the system performs normally- clears the desktop, goes to the windows vista screen(shows a small window stating "LOGGING off" then switches to "shutting down" and that's it .It will remain in that phase all night. My screensaver? is set to come up after about 10 min. of inactivity which it does in this shut down phase- over and over again. My biggest concern is that once its in this phase, It won't respond to any comands. I can only get it to shut off by momentarily unplugging the computer. Even with my lack of knowledge this raises the hair on the back of my neck!! Also, I use this computer for a small business, and it still has at least 3/4 of its ram ? available, so I don't think its that? I'll try the procedure Zylstra mentioned now.well, I tried it but, it returned with" shutdown-s-f-t 12 is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file " Did I do something wrong maybe? I typed it in the comand prompt window.Quote

I ran Vista on 1GB of RAM for quite a while, for basic (non-gaming) function, it works quite well. Most of the RAM Vista shows as used is cached (a lot less page file is used in Vista now...) kind of like the L1/L2 cache in the processor, its faster than using the page file, but slower than the L1/L2, but, nevertheless, gets more function out of your computer (otherwords: Yes, 2GB is a nice feature, but not necessary for normal use)

It was my fear that possible, Vista no longer has the Shutdown command the way it used to be. I dont think you did anything wrong, but, due to the information you have provided us, I no longer think that this is a needed diagnostic step.

Something is preventing your computer from shutting down properly. For the time being, instead of unplugging your computer, go ahead do the normal shutdown, and once it stops responding, HOLD down the power button for 10 seconds (in Mississippi's) (this is not something you want to do for normal shutdown)
Computers are good enough that you can leave them in Standby mode, and have them using very very little power (I hardly shut down my laptop now, unless its running off battery, even then, it will go on for a long time). Using standby until the issue is RESOLVED would be a better solution than using the power button.

I am getting the idea that this is a problem with Windows being unable to properly initiate a hardware shutdown.

Try this:
Hold down the WindowsKey + R
A run box should pop up, type in:

sfc /scannow

You should be prompted to put your Windows CD in the computer, be sure you have it ready.

If that does not work, then try this:
Click Start, and right click the "Computer" button (right side of the start menu), and select Properties.
On the left side, select "Device Manager," and then look through the list. Is there anything that shows a Question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!) next to it? If there is, could you tell us the exact name, and then double-click on the item, and tell us what it says under Device Status, Device Type, Device Manufacture, and Device Location?
You can also click on the Driver tab, and click the "Update Driver" button, and see if that will correct the issue.

Also, do you have Windows Updates enabled?

My reasonings:
Something is preventing Windows from shutting down. All ACPI devices have their own shutdown procedures, usually located in the BIOS. In the even that a driver is incorrect, Windows might be unable to manage the device in this manner, thus, possibly preventing a shutdown of the device. (Also, use of a driver that is having issues but is still in use could result in the same thing)

As for Windows Update, Microsoft has released updates for issues caused by bugs such as this.

Solve : mailto link in Vista?

Answer»

How can I modify the mailto link in Vista to open up my Yahoo or Hotmail accounts. When I click on an email link, Windows MAIL pops up. I went through the Internet Options, PROGRAMS, Internet Programs but to no avail.I don't think, it'll work with web-based mail programs. No, Vista will not open your webmail for email ADDRESS links, however, you can go to:
http://get.live.com/WL/config_all
And select Mail for your download option (deselect everything else)
and download. You can then install it, and it will check your Hotmail account through a much more full featured PROGRAM than just the webmail, and then you can set it to open email links (the program will prompt you: "Windows Live Mail is not yet your default application for email. Would you like to MAKE it as default?" click Yes.

Solve : Thumbnails?

Answer»

I don't know what happened but suddenly, whenever I go to a FOLDER containing pictures, instead of seeing a small thumbnail, I see what application it opens in. Is there any WAY to fix this?

Did you go to View and check THUMBNAILS?what seems to have happen is that you may have installed new software that recognises this type of file and to get you to use this programme it has set itself up as the default program.

to change this right click on one of the files select "open with....." then "choose "program" and select windows picture/fax viewer and this should change the ICONS back if you also tick the box always do this for this type of file this will stop that other programme from changing them back

bartrob

Nope. Still not working. Now it shows pictures of flowers. Maybe it HELPS if I add I use Vista? I don't know if that makes a difference...Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View, do you have "Always show icons, never thumbnails" checked?

Solve : 4 gigs showing as 2?

Answer»

Alright so recently I bought 2 - 2gig sticks of ram. But when I put them into my computer it only shows 2 gigs of ram. I thought it may be Xp causing the trouble so I upgraded to vista. But when I got it installed and running it STILL only shows me as running 2 gigs of ram. I thought it may be seeing each stick as a 1 gig stick so I TOOK one out and it still showed 2 gigs of ram. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get both stick to show up so I can have all 4 gigs of ram? Thank you.Ok there is a really and I mean really.............................long story behind this. Long and short is that 32bit XP and Vista can only support up to 4 gigs of ACCOUNTED ram total. Now the ram your video card has COUNTS towards this 4 gigs and also your motherboard configuration can also screw with numbers whether the memory is dual channel and how it supposed to be configured.

Who manufactures your motherboard and what model is it?

If anyone is interested I will post back with more details in a BIT I have to go back into my records and find the info.
Hers the detailed article I was talking about:
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.htmlAdd to this story the upgrad the BIOS possibility as he/she doesn't indicate if this is a machine originally designed for the XP then Vista systems howlingwolf is running. I knew someone once who tried installing more RAM on an old early Win98 machine and quickly HIT the BIOS limitations problem. Simply put, at the time the machine was produced having that much (i.e., how much we have today) of anything wasn't anticipated by the machine makers, so they saved a few bucks and lines of code by not bothering to teach the BIOS how to deal with numbers that big. It is very possible that if the machine in question falls into that category a BIOS patch is available from either the maker, or after market. Very good point it could be the BIOS.

How old is your machine?

If this machine is running XP this scenario is highly unlikely...Vista will show RAM in vicinity of 3 gig, even, if 4 gig are installed, but it's not the issue here, since it shows straight 2gig.this could be a simple one how many ram slots are there in your mother board if you have four then the problem could be that you are using slots 1 and 2 when slots 1 and 3 should be used this is a problem i have encountered before and it iwll only use slots 2 and 4 if 1 and 3 are filled up

Solve : Vista Loading Time 15mins + !!?

Answer»

Hi,
A friend of mine has a HP Pavillion a1125c. He had installed Vista Ultimate on it and for many months it was working fine and loading in seconds. He had left the PC on by itself for a day (I think), turned it off and turned it back on, only to find that Vista logon screen doesnt show. I have tried the following with little to no success:

1. Tried to boot in safe mode and safe mode with Networking. It worked but took 15 mins for it to load. It got stuck when loading crcdisk.sys driver and then it booted up.
2. Tried to boot with last good configuration Didn't work as it shows nothing (same as starting in normal mode)
3. Tried to boot with low resolution. That didnt work either. (I waited over 5 mins)
4. Tried to boot from DVD. This time i got the GREENISH wallpaper, but nothing else. I had kept the pc on for like 10 mins thinking that it was just loading something because it didnt seem like it was locked up (mouse was moving and the numlock was turning on and off) however that is the only thing that was working, nothing else. (again waited about 5-10 mins)

So do you guys know why Vista all of a sudden is not loading / taking forever to load?

This pc has been somewhat optimized for quick bootup (got rid of unwanted startup programs and services). It also has AVG antivirus so I'm pretty SURE its not a virus issue.

Any suggestions are welcome and Thanks in advance

Solve : Bootsect.exe file lost?

Answer»

I just got a laptop with WINDOWS Vista on it. After installing Windows XP on a separate partition, I LOST forward compatibility. I did find how to solve this problem in Microsoft's online documentation (and it can be FOUND here for people with the same problem, in case you're wondering ), so it's really not that big a deal. But I have one little problem with this: I've lost my accompanying Windows Vista installation DVD with bootsect.exe on it. Without bootsect.exe, I can't restore the Windows Vista MBR and return control to the Windows Boot Manager program.

So my question is, does anyone KNOW where else I can find the bootsect.exe utility? Is it online somewhere? And if not, is there someone with the Vista installation DVD (that isn't, you know, lost somewhere in a MESSY apartment) who could give it to me? I don't want to pay a few hundred dollars for a new copy of an OS I already have just for the one file!

Thanks a million in advance.Keep looking. $150+ DVD's should be very easy to find!Isn't it surprising, the amount of people who lose valuable CDs and DVDs like that, especially XP Pro CDs . . .Quote

It is a full installation, not an upgrade, so a previous version of Windows is not require. It is usually the same PRICE (ROUGHLY) as an upgrade CD and substantially less than a retail new version.

Hey guys, I'm completely at a loss to why this is occurring. Basically, my system boots up completely fine normally. However, when I leave any kind of usb flash memory plugged into a usb slot (such as my sandisk 1gb cruzer micro) my computer won't boot up. I'm running Vista now, but I had the same problem when I ran XP and never bothered to fix it. According to my bootup screen I'm running:

"Award Modulr BIOS v6.00PG
Intel i875P AGPSet Bios for 8IK1100"

The 8IK1100 being the serial number for my motherboard (made by gigabyte). The error in booting up occurs after the RAM has been checked and all IDE drives have been detected. I normally get the line:

"Verifying DMI POOL Data..."

However, when I leave a usb drive in I get the following:

"Verifying DMI Pool Data...
Invalid System Disk
Replace system disk, and then press any key"

If I press a key the above message of "Invalid system disk" repeats itself. When I remove the USB key everything returns to normal.

From my limited knowledge of system BIOS it seems like my computer it, for whatever reason, trying to boot up off the flash drive. I don't understand what would prompt this because my boot order is set to:

1. Hard Drive
2. CD-ROM
3. Floppy Drive

Any help would be greatly APPRECIATED and let me know if you guys need more information to diagnose the problem. This happened to me at work, fix is in the CMOS setup utility.

Look under the "Boot" section.
Look for an option for "USB Boot - Enabled".

Change this to disabled and this should correct for the problem.

The only reason I know of for using this option is to literally boot off of the USB drive (like a boot floppy). Disabling this should not affect your USB operation.

Hope this helps.Quote

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't have any such option in my BIOS. I checked under all the menus with no luck. I do have several USB options in my "boot priorities," but none of them are selected (as I mentioned in my first post, I have my boot priorities set to Hard Disk, CD, and then floppy). If I wanted to I could tell the BIOS to boot from a USB slot, but that's the opposite of what I want.

Anyways, I figured if it would be anywhere it would be listed under the catagories of "Integrated Peripherals." I checked there, but the only USB options were:

USB Controller [Enabled]
USB 2.0 Controller [Enabled]
USB Mouse [Enabled]
USB Keyboard [Enabled]

I tried turning them off and I booted up fine, even with a USB key drive plugged in. Unfortunately, after I booted up I had lost all USB functionality so this isn't exactly a solution to my problem.I'm thinking this is motherboard specific. I researched a little more and found that some motherboards do not like to have a USB drive connected at boot - depends on make and model.

Do you know what type of motherboard you have or possibly what brand PC and series number?

If Dell, Compaq, or whatever, try looking on their WEBSITE for a possible FAQ or even a BIOS update.

If a BIOS update looks likely - BE CAREFUL & USE CAUTION!!

Also, another possibility in BIOS, "Boot from external devices"I have a gigabyte brand mother board, model #8IK1100. Do you think I will have to update my BIOS? I heard that can result in disaster =/

Also, I looked in the BIOS for "Boot from external devices" and that wasn't there either.I really think your best bet is to use Gigabyte's tech support. They should be ABLE to tell you for sure. I looked up your m/b on their site but didnt have much luck finding this issue. I'm still thinking this is motherboard specific related (we know for sure your THUMBDRIVE works right:). You might include to them the brand USB drive you are using - just in case. Found this link to their email support.

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/ServiceCenter.aspx

I would wait for their response before attempting to update your BIOS.

If they give you an answer let us know what happens.Awesome, thanks for the help. I'll let you know what Gigabyte says.

Solve : Big problem with reinstalling Windows?

Answer»

Hey guys I just had to format my computer because I got a bad virus the my virus scanner did not pick up for me. So to make a long story short I have been TRYING to reinstall my operating system. Being on XP I was NTFS as you know. However I realize I am going to have to install Windows 98 and then us my dell xp upgrade cd to install a fresh copy of xp. But there is something wrong with my partitions on my harddrive. There is only one partition and it is like 5,368mb...My harddrive is a WD Raptor at 74gb. I am a little lost here. All I want to do is get my drive to be partitioned so I can install 98 then from that point on I will just put back xp with ntfs. Can someone help me out with this problem.

I just formateed the drive and it said FORMATTING 5,368.03M...This is not the capacity of my HD.What are you using to format that drive ? ?
Use the WD utilities to prepare that HDD for use making sure you set the drive as active...

Then BOOT to your XP CD and run setup.

You don't need to install Win 98 just insert the CD when prompted for a prior ver. of Windows.UNLESS that is some kind of a "restore CD" instead of a real Windows CD. http://files.frashii.com/~bootdisk/alabama/boot98se.exe

Download the above file and make a bootdisk.

Boot with the win98 bootdisk, start fdisk and select show drive INFORMATION I think it's option4.

Tell us what it reports.

Hope you have a 3.5 floppy drive. They sure are important. There is a glitch in fdisk when reporting large drive sizes. It reports the DIFFERENCE in its preset size and the actual size. The MS support site has an updated version of fdisk that supposedly corrects this. Thanks a lot guys I was able to get a fresh copy of Windows Vista installed but i am still left with this missing amount of memory on my hard drive. Vista is listing it as 69gb total but the hd is 74gb capacity. Is there any windows based utilities out there that can free up this missing space? I hate going into DOS and doing it that way.Actually those numbers are pretty close to correct...HDD manuf. report a slightly larger size so your actual size is around 69G.

And it's not memory on your HDD it's free space or storage.

Memory is RAM.Thanks sorry for the wrong meaning i typed noob

Solve : Vista install-glitch can save you  $$$'s  *?

Answer»

** [highlight]just passing on public info I find [/highlight]**

The fact that you can install the Windows Vista Upgrade WITHOUT having installed Windows XP or Windows 2000 is one of the latest developments since the Windows Vista release. It could save you money, but it might not be what it appears to be. Is this a legitimate glitch in the OS or simply an overlooked and permitted exception to the rules?

Some call this method proof that the security and piracy measures used by Microsoft are invalid. MANY members of several security mailing lists wonder where that opinion comes from. The issue is not a lack of security; it is a lack of product checks. The work around is simple. Proven by Daily Tech, and first announced by Windows technology guru Paul Thurrott, the steps needed are drawn out, but easy to follow. Boot with the Upgrade DVD version of Vista. Click ‘Install Now’. When prompted for a Product Key, do not enter it yet. This is the most important step; leave the fields blank, and click ‘Next’ to move to the next screen. On the new screen, select the version of Vista you bought. Install as normal (30 Day Trial). When finished, restart the DVD-based setup and install the SOFTWARE again, this time as a legitimate, full version. This will perform an ‘in-place’ upgrade. It will ask for the Product Key once more, and now you should enter it. The upgrade, sans Windows XP or 2000, is complete.

That information isn’t illegal per se: it comes from the documentation provided by Microsoft in regards to how to perform a ‘clean install’ using an upgrade version.
While the software allows this, there are some things to consider. If you bought an upgrade of Vista for the implicit REASON of using this loophole, you might be in violation of the EULA. However, there is no clear wording on this, just as there is no clear wording about several licensing issues.

Another point not mentioned in any news stories about this is an obvious one. If you already have Windows XP or 2000 installed, then you qualify for the Vista Upgrade Edition anyway. The complaint most have is that Vista deletes the other OS and, with at best 50-50 results, migrates your information and other profiles. The odds of you not keeping your profile and other information are so large that several experts tell users to back everything up rather than leaving it up to Vista to keep that information.

Some have also pointed out that this is a worthless workaround because you can get the OEM or Student version more cheaply than the Upgrade version. Doing so does violate the EULA, and you risk your Product Key becoming invalid because you have to provide false pretenses to qualify for the Student version. Also, you can no longer just buy an IDE cable or other hardware to get an OEM product.

If this is in fact an unknown loophole, you can expect Microsoft to correct it quickly, so this won’t work forever. If it is intended, then it makes the point of buying anything other than the upgrade version MOOT. With the confusing wording of the EULA, and the now widespread workaround based on data provided by Microsoft, is anyone else confused? If so, you aren’t alone. Maybe Microsoft will explain it. Then again, if they explain it in the same way they explained the license agreement . . . well, you get the point.

Solve : Must have's for installing windows.?

Answer»

Greetings CH,

Over the years i have installed windows over many many times. from windows 95 all the way to windows 8. However once i got into 7 and 8 a few questions came up.

When i installed XP i always installed directX9, netframework 2.0 Java...

But im not sure which version of Directx or if it comes with windows shall i INSTALL? same with netframework?
What other applications are a Must have in windows?
I'm pretty sure DirectX 11 is installed when you install Windows 8. But, to verify this, you could run dxdiag; the info on the System tab will show the DirectX version, if installed.

RE: netframework, running Windows UPDATE should install it if necessary.

If you want to install Java, you will need to download and install it. I have not installed it on my 2 month old laptop running Windows 8 and I'm going to skip it unless an actual need for it arises. So far, I've had no need for it.

Windows Defender that comes with Windows 8 has anti-virus protection. This is not true for Windows 7. Of course, you can opt to install a different antivirus program in Windows 8 if you wish.

Internet Explorer 10 comes with Flash Player already installed. So, no need to search for Flash Player and install it for Internet Explorer, unlike previous versions of Internet Explorer. I agree with Soybean. He is right.

I have been using his software before Bill Gates bought a necktie.

Windows Vista comes with DirectX 10. Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11. Windows 8 comes with DirectX 11.1.

However, in order to run DirectX 9.0 and earlier games on Windows Vista, 7, or 8, you will need to install the DirectX 9.0c redistributable package. the DX 9.0c package installation installs "wrappers", which will cause DX 9.0 calls to be routed through the later version of DirectX. (Vista has some additional compatibility CONSIDERATIONS since it doesn't require DX10+ from the hardware, and works with DX9).

And I know you are a "newbie", but you still need to explain EXACTLY what you mean so we can understand you.Cimoose, you did tap F8 repeatedly upon computer startup? That's usually how you get into the menu allowing you to boot to safe mode.

If you did, were you able to get a screen similar if not 100% same as the one in the screenshot below?

That is what is called a PS/2 mouse (the small round plug). Try a USB mouse, available most anywhere, even Walmart which has a USB mouse as low as $6.

After some research though, it seems this is a very common problem with the 1525 & 1526 models. A "fix" is explained here (with photos):

Solve : problem with USB modem on Vista?

Answer»

Hi there ,

I have a USB modem , it was working just fine with windows Vista , suddenly it's not recognized , I uninstalled and reinstalled its driver --> didnt work . I tried it on another laptop --> worked . I scanned the laptop for viruses , reinstalled the driver --> didnt work . I connect a flash memory on the same USB port and works fine . I am going nuts .... can somebody please advise me what can I do ?
It may be simply a lack of knowledge on my part but "have a USB modem" is not a term i am familiar with. Do you mean a wireless adapter connected via the usb port of the computer. truenorthUSB modems generally connect to the computer (there may be some routers that have a USB input). Most work fine, but from my experience a cat 5 cable with ethernet connectors (RJ45) are more reliable.

See if you can borrow, or buy an ethernet cable and see if that solves the problem.no i mean 3G broadband usb modem (data connection via mobile network)

Quote from: naserco on April 03, 2012, 06:09:26 PM

no i mean 3G broadband usb modem (data connection via mobile network)

You need to provide more details...callin it a Modem although slightly accurate threw everyone off...

The more details the better.actually it's a modem anyway it's a ZTE MF626 Is there a link or an available driver for Win Vista? Or do you have a disc for the USB wireless modem?OK I'm back on board (HOPEFULLY a bit wiser). This seems to be a "prepaid"wireless modem used in conjunction with a Telestra wireless service in Australia. There are many GOOGLE ENTRIES related to PROBLEMS with this device. Including the manufacturer making the statement that they are basically not to be held responsible if it doesn't work. I note that your usage is in conjunction with Vista. Do you also use a version of Ubuntu on that computer? Because this site relates to the proper installation method for a Ubuntu O/S.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1147685
I simply did a Google search using the "ZTE MF626 " as the search parameter. You might want to try the same as there are thousands of references to that modem. Sorry i cannot be more specific as to a solution.truenorthThank you all for your attempts to solve the problem .

I have solved the problem by removing power ISO software , obviously virtual CD causes problems with the ZTE software . I twisted my mind to find what changes I did that could cause the problem , at first I didnt expect it would be power ISO but it was actually it .

I hope this post may help anybody who would have similar problem in the next 10 years

Solve : Help dual booting windows 7 and 8?

Answer»

Hi, I have just purchased a new HD and want to install windows 8 on it. I already have windows 7 INSTALLED on another HD and I want to know what I will need to do to GET them to dual boot. I heard some people have problems getting them to boot when they are on separate drives and I don't want to run into the same problems. Thankyou!!This is actually the cleanest method for a Dual-boot setup...and SINCE Win8 is STILL a Beta i highly recommend it...
The basic procedure is to unhook the Win7 HDD and do the complete install of 8 to the other HDD...
Once all is up and RUNNING then re-connect the Win7 HDD ...
This way they won't bang heads...
At boot you enter Setup and select which Drive/system you want to boot to at that time...
PS file sharing etc. are completely workable in this scenario as well so i'd suggest this is the way to go...

Let us know if you have any further questions.I used VMWare Player, installed Win7 on it w/o product key and upgraded that to developer previewThere's no upgrade path from Win7 to DP8...I have done it myself. In fact you *NEED* a previous Windows OS installed or "DP8" will refuse to continue. Basically an "Upgrade", don't you think? Anyways like I said I went through all of this myself, I have a copy on VMWare that I use for testing

Solve : Is Windows Vista Compatable With Acer Driver's??

Answer»

I just purchased an OEM full version of Windows Vista Premium on eBay for my ACER Aspire notebook 5670 series.

I went to the Acer website and to see if I could download DRIVERS for Windows Vista but the SITE doesn't give me an option to select a platform. It seems that the drivers LISTED are meant for Windows XP which came bundled with the computer. Does anyone know if these drivers are compatible with Windows Vista?

http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/portal20.cfm?website=AcerPanAm.com/canada&siteid=7297&areaid=17&formid=3394#resultsUriel......... After doing some reading , it appears that some people have had no driver issues and others have. I think that before you do the install of Vista , [highlight]you should run the Windows Vista Upgrade advisor....... [/highlight] there is a link to D/L it on this page ........ http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx ........ make sure you have everything that you would normally use plugged in and then run the upgrade advisor ......... it will create a report ...SHOWING all the hardware and it's compatibility with Vista.........
The one area that may cause some issue may be the driver for the ethernet adapter.

dl65 I'm currently running Vista on a Travelmate 2410. No real problems. Your wireless drivers will be installed by Windows update.

Just be careful as ever if you have a USB modem. Thanks for the info. I will give the upgrade adviser a tryout. I'm not using a USB modem so things might work out ok.

Actually I have been thinking of installing Vista to a different partition so that I can dual boot for a while until some slow poke third party software companies update their software for Vista compatibility.

Solve : Vista - opinions??

Answer»

This is for those already using Vista, and may be of interest to those interested in it.
Those using it - what do you THINK of it?
What are the best and worst things about it?
What made you decide to get it?
ANYTHING else you want to share?
ditto "Calum" for some strange, dumb reason, I really want to buy this and face the incurred wrath which would be expected. I just want something new and the direct X10 sounds awesome. Looking forward to replys........... [Home Premium] ? DX10 would probably be the only thing that would make me want to upgrade.
However, I don't have a DX10 card, and I have a non-upgradeable mobile card in my laptop, so that's that done.
If I were to go for Vista, it'd be Ultimate, simply because it combines the best bits of Business with the best bits of Home Premium, theoretically providing the best of both worlds.
In reality, it'll probably be three times as bloated and unusable.
I don't see a version of Vista that's right for me.
Like to see some opinions from those already using Vista though.
One more thing - shouldn't the WINDOWS forum subtitle include Vista now?

Just thought I should mention it, maybe the admin will sort it out?I don't use it but i have an vista inspirat for the styling.
I'd say it looks nice. The object DOCK is nice too.
I say screw vista and get the inspirat. i'm using an old version so i'll BET it gets better.
BTW: less resource intensive with XP and a skinner.Quote

Solve : Automatic format and reinstallation?

Answer»

I am working on creating SOFTWARE to work with Windows PE in order to automate the processes that somebody would normally have to do when formatting a drive and reinstalling Windows. I am starting this project to be compatible with both Windows 7 and 8, but it is EXPECTED to also be compatible with Vista.

I programmed an algorithm with the help of somebody else a while back that converts/decodes the Product Key associated with the current running installation of Windows from the "DigitalProductId" registry value inside the Windows Registry. I was just looking around at the registry and filesystem and realized that drivers could be backed up actually quite easily.

First, open the registry. ENUMERATE through "HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Enum" and subkeys; Any value that exists as "HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Enum\**\**\Service" Gets referenced through "HKLM\System\ControlSet001\services\[Service Value]", then that key's values "DriverPackageId" and "Displayname" can be used in the program that wants to backup the driver files. The correct driver files would be in the location as follows: "%windir%\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\[DriverPackageId]". Activation files are also easy to backup and restore.

Utilizing WinPE and this method correctly, one should be ABLE to create a disc to automatically format/reinstall windows on a computer with all of the product key, drivers, activation already taken care of. Can any other experts on this subject offer any insight on this?Twp things of concern.
1. It has already been done and is licensed by Microsoft.
2. If thins is a way to evade the conditions n of the EULA, the forum will not help you.
Not sure what you want to accomplish here...no matter what OS.
If you are looking to do unattended installs there are some very good examples of it out there...
Let us know.I have no intentions on violating any EULA, if i was i wouldn't go to a public forum for help.

All i want is possibly more information to make the driver backup method more complete. i don't even EXPECT an answer back with any information because all of it is really technical. but what i really want is to collaborate with people with any useable knowledge with windows pe or backing up drivers. also i am willing to share source code with those interested. Also, not sure but i think my ip may be blocked i had to post from my cell

Solve : Help with dual graphics card setup: Error 43?

I recently received a Radeon HD 6580 which WORKS GREAT, however, when I try to run it with my FireGL v5100, I get error 43. I knows both of these cards work in my primary Pci-e slot, but they do not work when they are both plugged in. Both of the drivers are updated. I am running on Windows 7 x64. I am not SURE what to do from here.

Any help is appreciated!
-EricI think your problem lies with incompatibility of your graphics cards. NVidia allows use of mixed sli capable cards that are different than each other by combining "cuda" cores, but i don't think ati/amd have the same general TECHNOLOGY to do that. For the best of compatibility and performamce i'd always recommend running identical cards when running a multi-gpu system. Also make sure they are bridged properly with the correct cable/connector.. i could help further but at the moment I'm typing on my cellphone and its taking forever. for some reason my pc cant even ping this forum right now. facebook/google/etc. is fine, and dns resolves the HOSTNAME, ill try back later i guessWhat MBoard ? ?What is your objective? Do you merely want to run dual monitors? Is running two monitors off one card not a viable option for your purposes?

Whoa there, buckaroo. You have been told that SP 2 is free and necessary. Microsoft does not even support XP with less than SP2 applied. The fact that you do not like the advice given, for whatever reason, does not make it less true. SP1 is NOT more secure.

I think you start with several false assumptions and go downhill from there.

Solve : help me before i kill myself!!!! crazy?

Answer»

I'm going crazy trying to resolve my PC issue.. i've been asking around MANY places for some idea!!

Basically my PC is stuck in a loop... you turn it on... it asks if you want to "start normally, safe mode or use last config". Now I can select either ones... and the windows bar comes up... and logo... after 10 secs.. it reboots itself.. etc...

Now I "tried" to boot my windows media center disc 1.. I went into the bios.. made sure 1st boot priority is set to cd/dvd rom.. and it is... so i put the media center disc in and you use a underscore blinking for a min... which looks like its reading the disc..... but then the SAME thing happen as above...

I am thinking of getting a new HD, but someone told me that wouldn't help.. because if the cd isn't booting now.. it won't boot later either...

I hear it COULD be due to spyware or xp files being corrupted... but my issue is.. if I do get a new HD how will I install windows?

PC specs are :

P4 3.2 GHz, 160GB HD, 1GB ram, windows media center.Sounds like a failing hdd....

[highlight]Your first priority is to protect/recover vital data files on your hdd if that is necessary.[/highlight] Before attempting any reinstalls I suggest you slave your existing hdd on another machine and backup the files.. [highlight]Do no more work on the hdd[/highlight] until your backup is done and verified.

Then, and only then, will it be reasonably safe for you to investigate your existing hdd using first the MANUFACTURERS diagnostics then chkdsk etc..

GOOD luckDid you chose "Last Know Configuration"? Then is it the same?Hmmm. Ive got the same prob. I`ve just completed a full recovery, but still getting probs with stop messages.Im thinking mine could be stubborn malware or corrupt driver/s. :-?

p.s. dont kill yourself, try smashing up your xp and getting vista next week I'm just REALLY stressed.. i'm a college student and i NEED my pc to be working by this weekend...

I am thinking of getting a new HD.. but the thing is.. someone told me if putting the XP disc in NOW doesn't boot up... it ALSO won't boot up when a new HD is installed...

and yes I tried last known config and it STILL.... loops...

I just want to be able to be able to boot my XP, so I can get a new HD and reinstall windows and be on my way!!

I checked the bios.. it has 1st boot device as my dvd rom drive... I place the windows disc in and it reads it and almost skips it? They gave me 2 windows discs.. for media center.. disc 1 and 2....theres a similar problem further down the posts from rissarenee. check it out, it may help.
Since you can't even boot up with the CD, it doesn't sound like a harddrive issue.

Laundry list:
1. Check all wires and connectors in the computer, make sure nothing is loose.
2. You might have a RAM stick gone bad.
3. Possibly the power supply unit has gone bad or overloaded, check the output wattage of your psu. Do you have add on cards?
4. Hate to say this, possibly mobo failure.

B.well.. i did a memest 1-2 days before the PC got into issues and the memtest said the ram was fine... if the ram wasn't working.. wouldn't the PC just be a black screen?

I doubt it's the psu.. could be.. but I don't think it is..

I have a feeling it may be the hard drive.. the day before it got into this issue.. I heard a CLICK...CLICK.. noise... and that can only be coming from the HD...

BTW my pc is made by mdg..

anyone know of a boot disc they might have.. so i can just burn it on a cd and see if it's just my disc that's not working...Unhook the hard drive completely and try to boot with your XP CD. Post back the results.I REMOVED the Sata cable from the HD and I keep on getting.. "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device"

Makes me wonder if my xp media center disc is bootable? I can see the dvd rom drive light blinking to read the disc... then I get that msg above....

BTW my media center came with 2 discs...And this is a shiney CD that says Microsoft all over it? How are the disks labeled?

Is your boot priority in the BIOS set for CD before hard disk? It needs to be.1st boot is my benqdvdrom and 2nd boot is WDhardrive

the cd's I have are 2 silverish... cd's labeled "1, microsoft windows xp media center edition 2005, support provided by 1"

"the software includes on this is recovery cd rom was preinstalled on ur HD at the factory and may be used as a backup/recovery of your PC"

I would try out a floppy boot.. but I don't have a floppy on the other PC... so i might if possible take the floppy out from here and use the windows xp home edition boot disks and see if that works...

unless someone has a windows xp boot disc.. which I can burn on a cd and try out?do you have more than one cd/dvd drive I have hers of boot problems when two are conected.nope I have only ONE dvd rom... I'm starting to think mabye it's my XP disc?.... I don't know what to do now... the last option I can see.. is buying a floppy drive... and booting with floppy's... and seeing if that works....

Yep. That's erroneous; the only way to have 8GB of Virtual Memory when you have 8GB of RAM is if the pagefile is already disabled... presumably they are talking about 8GB of RAM as well as an 8GB pagefile, and for some reason they feel that is a problem, or they are worried that it is. (It's not)

But were they booting DOS from floppies when they were 10? That's the METRIC with which we ought to judge their CAPABILITIES and understanding of technology.

Anyway, the content there explains why one might see a performance gain from fiddling about with the pagefile (outside moving it to a faster drive which will indisputable make things a bit better).

Of course they refer to the pagefile as "virtual Memory" even though Virtual Memory is basically the sum of all the available "memories" (RAM+Pagefile, usually). The use of "Virtual Memory" to refer only to the swap space dates back to early versions of Mac OS as well as to some extent windows NT 3.x; the former referred to it's pagefile as "Virtual Memory"; the latter did as well. In fact, that latter point is the reason why the groupbox surrounding the page file options still has the title "Virtual Memory", since it used to be a button to the side that opened a dialog much like what the "Change..." button in the "Virtual Memory" groupbox has now. This contributes heavily to confusion over what Virtual Memory is- citation being the page that grey1989 cited to debunk what I said, which says that "virtual memory is everything that isn't physical memory" which is nonsense, at least now it is.

I do sort of wonder why the pagefile is called Virtual Memory on windows NT; maybe it was to prevent confusion, since many other systems referred to their swap space as "Virtual Memory", including a few DOS DPMI applications. Another interesting note is that NT 3.1 doesn't have a "System Managed" option, so much of the configuration within is necessary to change it from defaults when you install more memory, and so forth. On the other hand, there are a few minor issues with caption names and so forth; maybe the additional work of changing it and translating it to a bajillion languages has prevented them from being "fixed". Sort of like how Notepad can't handle files with a Byte-Order Mark.

Anyway, the article is mostly sourced- as they mention- from a Mark Russinovich article on the subject. Excellent postings there. Reminds me I meant to read Zero-Day at some point.

You jealous, bro?

Yeah I was fixing computers with boot floppies when I was 9 or 10. Here's an update on that. By the time I was in grade 7 I was fixing computers using the same methods HiJackThis uses, completely manually and mostly using regedit. I was creating my own batch files since '97, until I learned how to use JScript when I was 12. Since then I have been learning Server-Side scripting languages such as PHP, more JScript, some C++, and to add to all of that, I know my way around the Windows Management Instrumentation. I have set up multiple servers, got my account deleted off of my school's network for gaining access to over half the school's accounts, which goes to say that I have even dabbled with, and have had success with hacking. I even went as far as to create my own encryption algorithm. But I guess all of my knowledge on this stuff is completely useless when it comes to pagefiles, because my underlying DEDICATION to researching computer-related information, the reason I was able to do the things I was doing at that AGE, apparently isn't good enough to be applied to anything but my previous accomplishments.Quote from: Gray1989 on April 07, 2012, 11:28:47 PM

Actually, I also conceded on those flaws. You must have missed that with all the rage flowing through you at seeing I had the utter audacity to question you about anything. As I said, it was all grabbed from my memory, sometimes it get's mixed up with other stuff, possibly the same thing that had you referring to the pagefile as Virtual Memory, though at least in that case a lot of (inaccurate) literature does that too.

Of Course I was wrong about programs being able to discover the size of the page file, but what I meant, was as part of the Memory Management API; Unlike Mac OS (Classic) for example, whether a Pagefile is in use or not is not a fundamental piece of information directly accessible via the Memory management functions; one needs to import other libs and call a mess of other functions (or inspect the Performance key) to get at that data.

Quote
That is more useless than the topic of this thread.
Actually, it's quite relevant; my problem isn't that you made that teensy mistake, since I did accidentally mix up Virtual Address Space with Virtual Memory for some parts of my original post. it was that- even after being told the proper term, you continued to use it, and smash it's definition together with both the pagefile as well as Virtual Address Space. I now believe that you either did this on purpose, or are a moron. Most likely the former.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-the-size-of-virtual-memory
Change the size of virtual memory

If you receive warnings that your virtual memory is low, you'll need to increase the minimum size of your paging file. Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file at the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer plus 300 megabytes (MB), and the maximum size at 3 times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. If you see warnings at these recommended levels, then increase the minimum and maximum sizes.
...
Increases in size usually don't require a restart, but if you decrease the size, you'll need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. We recommend that you don't disable or delete the paging file.

If it were me i'd wipe the HDD and sell it as is.You could always contact Dell and get them to send you a disk with your OS on it. It's usually a nominal fee + shipping.
when I first got this laptop I did the back up with four CD's is that the os?No...it's is all the files that needed for the recovery...if the recovery partition has been messed with they won't work...hence the error message.

100GB HDDIf your system won't boot to a cd or dvd it is invariably due to ONE of THREE reasons:

1) The optical drive is not the first device in the bios boot order or

2) The cd or dvd is either BAD, not bootable or not an original OS disc or

3) The optical drive itself is badHey jammatras,

What you can try is do an upgrade installation. For this you need to insert the Windows 7 DVD in your CD/DVD drive and then run the installation from your windows Vista desktop.

You need to go to Start-> Computer -> Right click on your CD/DVD drive -> Left click on Autorun -> Select Upgrade.

If there is no Autorun then you need to go to your CD/DVD drive and double click on setup.exe.Did you see the message like Hit any key to boot from DVD drive?

Solve : USB mouse goes off and on randomly?

Answer»

Greetings!

About a month, month and a half ago I started experiencing my Logitech G5 mouse just turn off and then after a random amount of time turn BACK on. Doesn't not make for a good scenario when GAMING especially in clutch moments.

The mouse is five years old and the fabric around the cord has frayed away and some of the plastic SHEATHING has stripped away as well. I'm FIGURING the the cord had a short in it. So I order a new mouse.

My new mouse a Cyborg R.A.T. 5. I must have gamed with the mouse for about a week, week and a half and then it started exhibiting similar behavior. It would turn off and not turn back on. I'd have to unplug the USB plug and then wait a few seconds and plug it back in. Some times it would work, sometimes it would not.

I've done the following:

* Full virus scan with nothing found
* Moved the mouse (both of them) to the other three ports on the back of the PC and even the front two ports. Same behavior.
* 100% up to date drivers and software
* Searched fruitlessly for a solution
* Looked at the Event Logs which shows no hardware, application or security errors or warnings
* I have a dual boot on this PC with a Linux side. The mouse works flawlessly on that side. I've used both mice for hours on the linux side and they never turned off.

Any of the other devices plugged in act fine! And those devices would be a web cam (not in use), printer (not in use) and my keyboard.

I've attached my msinfo32 file in a zip file.

I'm super grateful for any help! Cause this is really un-nerving! I'm down to do all the diagnosing that is necessary to fix this!!

Thanks for any and all help!

Did that .. same thing *sigh*

I also did a selective start up with only MS services running. After a while the mouse disabled and re-enabled itself.Sounds like a problem with the motherboard. That's what I was thinking too .. but .. wouldn't my keyboard act flaky too and not just the mouse? Also, why would the mouse behave normally over on my linux partion? Also my mobo isn't posting back any bad codes which you would think it'd go insane with a USB problem.

I could get a PCI card they're fairly cheap. This just doesn't make sense at all!Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and USB root hub is another option. Removing other external USB devices and drivers to check on difference. While the last choice would sometimes end up a repair install just to get certain devices working flawlessly.Quote from: MrBiggz on April 03, 2012, 10:57:07 PM

No, I agree. Now that I reread the thread it may very well not be a hardware issue. Look in device manager - are there any yellow or red symbols? There is one. It's been there for along time. It was for power management which I don't think this mother board ever had a driver for. At least I never saw one. And it's probably a pain to find one now! Since a-bit went under or GOT bought out by some other company that I don't even know!

Cause whatever it is the location it gives is on the PCI bus.See if you can find the chipset / motherboard driver and if so, download and install it.Quote from: Allan on April 03, 2012, 08:56:01 AM

I was digging more into this today and I found that this IS happening on my linux partition. It's just not as noticable cause the overhead on a linux OS is so much longer so the mouse just blinks out for a second or two and comes back. Where as in Windows it might be 10+ seconds before it enables again.

Looks like I'm going to try this.

My board has the following expansion slots:
PCI Express x16: 1 x PCI-E X16, 1 x PCI-E X16 (x4 bandwidth)
PCI Express x1: 1
PCI Slots: 3

Full specs here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127030

I know one of the PCIe slots is taken by my video card. I would imagine the best slot to put that in would be another PCIe slot for the shear speed of it. I'm not going to use it to transfer any files, just to hook the mouse into it. Talk about Jerry rigging! I feel that a regular PCI card would just create some sort of bottle neck.

But correct me if I'm wrong this will function on the PCI bus but look like a USB device and behave like a USB device. Correct??

Inevitably I'm going to have to replace this mobo! =(((( It's only a little over four years old! I had a P4 that I used as a test file server which was left on 24/7 and some really extreme temps too and he never failed. Gave it to my step-daughter and she used it until she got sick of how slow XP ran on it since it originally ran Win2K. It's going to be a not so bad replacement. I'm just going to find a mobo combo (either board and mem or board and processor), processor fan. Everything else I'm keeping. Oh .. and Win7.

I thank you guys/gals for all the help and I'll post back if this works for me. I hope it does!! *crossing fingers*Nix the thread above! I have solved the mystery!!!

I found the true nature of things once I got past the paranoid wife thinking I'm swiping parts off her PC. And let this be a reminder to you people; just because your paranoid, doesn't mean their not out to get you!

She's got a plain Jane logitech optical mouse. Hooked it up and NO, no, NO problems at all!

So here's what I had:
> Mouse #1 My Logitech G5: Short in the cord just coming out the mouse housing
> Alot of researching, trying this and that and asking on forums like this (which the help has been nothing less then great)
> Bought mouse #2 a Cyborg Gaming R.A.T. 5: Which against the odds was defective!!! Leading me to a false positive that my mobo was bad

So what were the odds that the replacement mouse was bad too??? I should have won the Mega Millions in stead I get a lemon mouse! UGHHHHH!!!Quote from: MrBiggz on April 07, 2012, 06:39:21 AM

Solve : BSOD every time I try to install a new program or update a current one.?

Answer»

Every time I go to install a new game or program my computer gets a BSOD about halfway through. It usually only happens on a program that I decently sized. Please help me! I have done a full malware scan as well a full Microsoft security scan. I have attached a copy of the BSOD.

System:
Nvidia Gforce GTX 650ti
AMD 6-core COU 3.3Ghz, 14.0 MB total CACHE
700w PSU
8 gb DDR3 ram

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyI did it and it says there are 0 crashes. Should I try to download something to force a BSOD so it can get a crash report?Let's try a couple of things:

1) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

2) Hard Drive Diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the BRAND of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll CREATE bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "WRITE image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnosticMy cd drive doesnt have a BURNER from what I have accumulated. Is there any other way? Sorry for the inconvience. It just BSOD again and the bluescreen view didn't pick it up. Someone help. Its driving me crazy

I have some problem with my Toshiba LAPTOP, It says "Low disc space on Data D". When I open D I cant see any big file but it has occupied all 149 GB space. Unable to resolve this and my PC is also slow.
Kindly advice,Download, install & run treesize to see what is using the space
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/

Also, please describe EXACTLY what is slow and what LED up to your problem(s)D: may be the hidden Recovery PARTITION and by nature should be almost full...Backup all IMPORTANT data from drive D, then format it Please ignore the above advice.Wow...

Solve : Have a system error message?

Answer» HELLO all you awesome guys and gals!

I'm always in awe that you computer gurus can do what you do. Me, I'm a nurse. Simple.

I've been having periotic error messages of different types. But, today it got real BAD and I did a SYSTEM Restore.

That came back and said to go do some troubleshooting. I did and this is the message I got back:

"A service is reported as having an unexpected error code Cause: One or more services has failed. The service did not stop gracefully, suggesting the service may have crashed or one of its components stopped in an unsupported way.
Details: Service exited with code not equal to 0 or 1077
Resolution: Restart the service"

I have no clue what that means, if it's serious or not or what to think.

Can one of you help?

Thanks! Pennie

What exactly do you mean "That came back" ? The error did? What kind of hardware do you have?Click on Start Menu.

Open RUN. Type mmc devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

You'll get a window called Device Manager.

Explore each one of the devices and CHECK if there is any exclamatory icon on the device.

If yes, post a screenshot of that window. Device manager has nothing to do with services not starting.
