Solve : Vista 32 bit or 64bit ??

Answer»

Hi all,
Can someone tell me the difference between Microsoft Windows VISTA Home PREMIUM 32-Bit DVD (OEM)
and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit DVD (OEM) .
which is the best to have 32bit or 64 and why
:-?
Thanks
Ned
As always Google has the answers. You just have to look.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=vista+32+or+64+bitGreat, GX1_Man ,

Thanks a lot for the link. I will have a read

Ned
Do you have a 64-bit PROCESSOR? If not, 32-bit for you Hi,
I am getting a new pc and have been told to wait for Vista (not the add on to xp) to come out, something to do with drivers !!,
The processor i am looking at is a "Intel core 2 duo E6600 2.4GHz"

Ned

ps still not sure if a 64 bit is better :-?64bit is much FASTER than 32bit, it allows for more memory addressing. Here ya GO, read up! Good Luck finding drivers for 64bit Windows...

Other than that i hear it's real spiffy....

Solve : Mice that last ten minutes?

Answer»

My MOUSE used to be silver. Now its black. I cant even tell what kind it is. Does anyone else have this problem. This is a technical query? The paint wears off cheap mice. This is caused by your hand rubbing. Solution: buy a better mouse. Or a black one. My black Microsoft mouse is made of black plastic and looks as good as the DAY I bought it 2 YEARS ago.

Actually, most silver/grey/other metallic color painted mice do this, even some of the expensive ones. My old painted silver wireless Microsoft mouse and my wife's painted silver Logitech mouse did this after about a year.

However, my blue Logitech G5 and GREEN Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 still look as good as when I bought them (3 years and 2 years ago respectively) because that's the color of the plastic, not paint.

Inevitably, most any painted object will have its paint worn off with ENOUGH handling. Next time you get a mouse, get one that the plastic is molded that color, not painted. Problem solved. (Doesn't necessarily have to be black.)

Solve : BSOD Dump files?

Answer»

I've had this problem for a while now. BSOD at every startup, then starting up in memory recovery mode didn't work. Eventually after selecting Start Windows Normally 1-3 times it would work. I remember trying to get to the bottom of this but didn't know about dump files or how to get to them. And I couldn't read the BSOD because it was too fast. I happened to glance POOL_CORRUPTION or something like that, googled it and it brought me to a site explaining about dump logs and how to get to them/read them. I have the last dump file attached. Let me know what you think guys (and gals).

Thanks

I think I may finally be able to have a normal computer and not be afraid of restarting my computer. Here's hoping....

==================================================1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Please boot to your W7 dvd and run startup repair options.

3) If the problem persists try running sfc /scannow (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833). The problem is associated with a system file and it's possible that it has become corrupt somehow.I want to say it started after the integrated sound card stopped WORKING. It was faulty.

What's a W7? Windows 7? I have Vista installed. I've tried the system restore already and the . It seems to happen no matter what I do. I'll try that scannow thing tonight and get back to you in the morning.

Thanks for your help everyone. So did you replace the card? Please, tell us everything at once. Providing information one bit at a time makes it very difficult to offer appropriate advice.Okay, yes I replaced it with a PCI diamond audio pro 7.1 from C-Media Electronics, I believe.
I also replaced the graphic card, but that was the day I got the computer. I disabled the ATI RADEON HD 3200 and installed the ATI RADEON HD 4300/4500 series according to the manufacturers guidelines. It didn't start BSODing until around after I installed the sound card. I also had Kaspersky at the time. I don't know if any of this is RELEVANT but there it is.To *censored* with tomorrow morning. I just finished the system file checker and got these results when I entered this command after verification was complete.

findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Okay, I'm not concerned with the settings.ini file for the sidebar (do you use the sidebar by the way?).

After reboot do you still get a blue screen error?

Please look in device manager - any yellow or red symbols?I never use the sidebar. Almost everytime I reboot whether I shut down or restart. The Gateway screen with F2 and F8 at the bottom will show , then it will be a BSOD. Something about POOL_CORRUPTION. Then it will go to the Gateway screen again. Then the Windows has had an unexpected shut down with two options, Memory recovery mode (which always leads me to the same screen of two options I'm describing here) or start windows normally. I choose start windows normally of course since it's the only option that works. Sometimes it will work the FIRST time I choose start windows normally. Sometimes it will BSOD again. Eventually Windows will load.

What about ksecdd.sys or ntoskrnl.exe? Were they in the system files we just checked?

There is a yellow ARROW by the old Graphics Card in device manager. It's been there for a while, way before this problem started.1) Uninstall the old display adapter in device manager

2) So you are saying that even after running sfc /scannow you still get the blue screen at boot, is that correct?I will uninstall the old driver and reboot then get back to you.

It used to only BSOD when I would restart. So I had to use only shut down. Then it started doing it no matter what I used.Okay, it restarted just fine. Although the old graphics card re-installed itself upon start up. I guess I should just disable it then?

So this system file checker, should it be a regular form of maintenance to prevent this from happening again? What is a good maintenance routine that I should adopt? I'm scared that one day my comp will crash and I wont be able to "resuscitate" it. I've already had to replace a faulty hard drive.

Thanks a TON for the help! I'm sorry that I was a pain. This problem started a while ago and I was slow to remember what exactly had happened. No, system file checker should NOT be used unless needed. You had at least one corrupt system file and we replaced it with an original version, that's all. As for regular maintenance, the MOST important thing any computer user can do is create regular back ups to off-disc media with disc imaging software. That way, if something like this happens again you can just restore the last image.

Solve : Yahoo mail sign in difficulties...yahoo in general?

Answer»

Having trouble signing into my yahoo e-mail account. When I enter name & password & click on the sign in button, absolutely NOTHING happens. I can sign in on different computers, so obviously it is this particular computer.

ALSO: on this computer, we were having issues with the security certificate. The date & time was set okay.

Seem to be having problems with yahoo in general, which is our home page. Sometimes we try to go to yahoo, and "it cannot display the page"

We ran several security SCANS with: AVG & webroot. Nothing seemed to be amiss. A couple of adware removed. Still having issues. We cleared our cache & history.

Any THOUGHTS?? Doesn't seem to be a virus on our cpu.

Thanks everyone.

Yahoo has been wonked here on my end on and off for the past 2 weeks...

Solve : Help on disabling WFP (Windows File Protection) For specific file??

Answer»

I am having trouble with windows 7 because I am trying SPECIFIC words from US English to UK English (E.G. "appearance and personalization").

C:\Windows\System32\en-US (Shell32.dll.mui)

Now, because of the windows checksum. It will not allot me to successfully edit it without it reversing the changes.

I'm trying to teach my Windows to learn proper English.

I have been trying to use WfpReplace but the server to download seems to be down.

http://bitsumfordevelopers.com/files/wfpreplace64.zip

Is there ANYWAY to do this in a more simplified way?

You can change "Location" and "SYSTEM LOCALE" to "UNITED Kingdom" in the Region and Language settings, and you should get the spelling you are after.

If you have tried the above, there are a number of other things to try, including a check of installed toolbars etc, and also this THREAD at answers.microsoft.com shouyld suggest some things to think about:

Do you understand how the Auto-hide feature works?

Solve : Toshiba L355D-57825 PSLEOU BSoD?

Answer»

My sister asked me to fix her lap top. Constant black screen, then BSoD. OK, In safe mode first thing I did - Copied her docs and mp3's onto a USB data traveler. Next I uninstalled as many newly installed programs from the list hoping it's just a driver problem. One thing I noticed she never updated using MS updates. All she had on her OS windows vista home premium 32 bit is SP1. I rebooted running vista normal. Took a look around and again, BSoD. Rebooted in safe mode, went after more junk programs and uninstalled them. Rebooted, again BSoD. OK time to say good bye to the OS and run the recovery disks that came with it. I went in the BIOS and set priority to boot up on the disk drive. Rebooted, inserted recovery Disk 1 - running, set to restore to "Out of box state"... half way through the recovery disk 1 - BSoD. OK now what I'm thinking! Run the recovery disk and repeat erasing the HDD. Done! Rebooted - ran the recovery disk 1 again to start all over, set it to out of box state. Again half way through - BSoD. Next: OK, Time to go after memory sticks see if memory sticks are causing the problem. Two sticks came with the lap top - upper stick is 1GB & lower stick 2GB's. (3GB total) Removed sticks....replaced to lower slot the 1GB stick, kept the 2GB out. Rebooted to the disk drive and ran recovery disk 1 set to out of box state on a clean erased HDD running 1GB of memory only. As I'm typing here, I'm running recovery disk 1 It goes through building the partition, copying files.......WOW this is a first... asking to insert recovery disk 2 ....copying files - Now recoverying, please wait! ........I'll get back to you shortlyJust fyi, uninstalling programs has NOTHING to do with drivers. Also, without knowing the EXACT blue screen error message there's not much we can do. However, it SOUNDS as though you've isolated the problem. Let us know if you do actually need assistance - and good luck Problem solved - out of date drivers, driver conflicts and over CLOCKED 2gb memory stick. But thanks for prompt reply. Now I know where to come next time I'm handed a "need to fix" PC.Quote from: Allan on April 12, 2012, 06:23:12 AM

FYI - True & FALSE: Through Programs and Features if the device driver is listed right click on the listed device and click Uninstall, then Yes to confirm. Sometimes, you will get a notice to restart the computer to finish uninstalling the driver. If you do, then click on Yes to restart the computer when prompted. If a generic driver for the device is included in Windows, then Windows will automatically install this generic driver for the device if the device is still connected.

Through Device Manager: This will allow you to uninstall just the device, or both the device and device driver.

Solve : Help! No folder options!?

Hello... I'll get right to the point. I used FOLDER options once and then it disappeared. Can ANYONE tell me what's going on? My brother just installed windows vista and it had been working fine last TIME he did. But recently the same thing happened on xp professional and now it's happening here.

help would be much appreciated. try this. What "this" does is tell me how to enable or disable folder options, but it's not even configured. It couldn't be virus cause this pc was recently formatted. Thanks Whitey Have you made your one time set of backup restore disks? :-?Boot with your legal XP Pro CD and format the C drive and install it on there.

Acer has a hidden recovery partition as well as reinstall CD's for putting Media Center back on if you ever choose to. You can also use their backup software to create a backup image of your existing Media Center installation and put it on the D drive (the second partition you describe).

Thanks for the imput, If I put xp-pro on will my existing partitions be erased and will I have to flash or erase the bios ?? :-/Whitey........ There is no need to reflash or erase the bios ........ Just do as GX1_Man has already suggested .
And yes anything on the partition you formatted will be erased .

dl65 In reply#1 ...I was just trying to point out that most manufacturers now ship computers with a backup restore used to make a copy of the restore disks
to return your system to it's original way it was when first purchased.

If you format and lose that capability you may wish you had did your restore
disk set first.Read your owners manual before you do the format. :-?

Your owners manual should give you instuctions on making a restore disk
set.

They really have messed up that part of the good old days.

Whitey,

Did you buy a copy of XP Pro to load on a brand new laptop that already had an operating system? If so, why? (Just curious.)

Acer lists that computer as coming with XP Home or Pro only.

http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/as5100.htm

Maybe they updated it to Media Center later.Quote

Hello GX1_MAN
Thanks everybody for the imput
I have made the backup discs you inquired about....
Ipicked up some bad spyware that got by WEBROOT [smiley=shocked.gif]
Itried to get rid of it with no luck, so I backed up and ran the disc restore, and didn't recover everything.
My OS was very unstable and things just were not running right.
So I WENT back and restored to original FACTORY condition, and things seem to be alright now.
Needless to say I'm not impressed......... But I'm up for suggestions........
Thanks Again Whitey
Get AVG Anti-virus And

AVG Anti-Spyware.

They are free and do a good job
that's what I use all the time. :-?

I can't keep buying software...........

If you did the complete restore it formatted and restored to original
when you first got it.You should not have that problem now but, you
must keep your antivirus and spyware up to date.

Even though AVG is free ,it is STILL a superb program, use it.

Neither of these require Windows to be USED. If the hardware is defective, Windows is irrelevant.

i have a reinstall cd from the dell computer i am on now but do not have the toshiba disks with me right now.

i burned the memtest86 to a disk but do not know how to get it to run. whenever i power on the laptop it immediately goes to the "windows did not start successfully" screen. there i have the safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, start windows normally options, but i do not know how to run the cd WITHOUT running windows.Press 'F8' as you are booting to select which device you would like to boot from or you could configure your cd rom drive to boot first every time by hitting the "Delete" key as you are booting and setting the cd rom drive to boot first then either floppy drive(if you have one) or Harddrive.i got the stop code to display:
ox000000ed (ox82309a68, oxc0000006, ox00000000, ox00000000)

still working on the memtestHave a look here, and here, just googled found 32,900 for your stop error code at 0.06 seconds.A few possible causes and fixes:

You'd think the guy would give his elves a break and let them hammer out all the bugs in XP before they release an infested new OS! (it had a limited release in 2006).

No it HAPPENS when I log on, wake the computer from Sleep, and when I CONNECT or disconnect anything from the network. I can deal with the Error 1-2 times but my house HOLD uses the Wifi and they connect and disconnect from the network which causes that error to appear
who knows when. That error look like it from a HP printer. Can you still print to it?At:

Yes it works fine; I've even reinstalled it. The scanner works fine as well.
That account I deleted was called user the dude at a computer repair shop created it. I made the other user accounts. I don't get it why is it pointing to that path that doesn't even exist any more, shouldn't it not appear? Well I've looked threw the registry and found nothing that points to that location under shared DLLs.

PS. I forgot to menchin the printer is connected using an ethernet cable to the network.Quote

That's a good point. How about just searching the entire registry for that file and delete every single entry that comes up. You said it doesn't exist, so it shouldn't do any harm. Might take a few minutes though.it found one under
[Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\HPSLPSVC\Parameters]
and
[Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\HPSLPSVC\Parameters]
I backed it up and I'll post back if anything changes.

I think what i might do now is search the registry for anything that goes beyond "c:\users\user\" and delete it. Sense the user doesn't exist any more.I'm glad it working.Quote

Be careful about deleting, you don't want to do a complete reinstall.I doudt I'll run into problems. But if I do I'll restore the registry from the backups.

Surely you can get on the SITE if the laptop wont turn off. What OS are you using? Have tried holding the power button down for 5- 10 seconds? If this works re-boot into safe mode and run your anti-virus scan, probably malware and spyware scans too!

Solve : What do you think of windows vista??

Answer»

personally, i hate it. the beta rig we setup at the PC shop i work in has a gig of ram, and a 3.40ghz pentium D with 2X2mb L2 cache, AND ITS STILL SLOW!. its like running windows XP on a pentium three 1.0 ghz, with 128k cache, and 256mbs of SDRAM... personally, i am going with option five. OH, as a note, you can run it with 512mbs of ram, but a gig is RECOMMENDED by microsoft, personally, i doubt it would run smooth on two gigs of ram, with a 512mb video card.Well, it is still a beta also. I have no plans for it personally, but I am sure it will, in time, be accepted and people will invest in more hardware just to run it. You did not have the option but,I voted try it in three years.I voted "Option four, and it is the next windows ME"
From EVERYTHING I've read on Vista, it is horribly slow and you need a really high-end PC just to run it.
It also seems that boot time is slower than with, say, XP, and games and other applications also run slower under Vista.
You need 1Gb of RAM just to run it, and that's a bare minimum according to most sites.
Personally I have no plans for it, although I may consider it in a few years if/when I buy a new PC, as I really don't think my laptop's up to the mammoth task of Vista.Hasta la Vista baby! Do yourself a favor and save your money, get Linux or use Mac OSX.

How can a company keeps shipping out craps and still stay in business is beyond me. :-?

MacPCBundling and deals with hardware makers has lways been the secret to their success. Despite the court RULINGS, I don't see any change in that behavior.

WIndows Vista sells more hardware just to run it, so hardware makers are happy as well.

Solve : ACPI.sys' thread idles at 25% CPU usage?

Answer»

My computer seems to idle at 25% processor usage. I looked at task manager and it rather helpfully told me it was 'System', so I downloaded Process Explorer and had a look at the threads under system and the culprit was labelled as 'ACPI.sys+0x1af7c', showing a near-constant 25% CPU usage! I've attached what I'm seeing.

The computer I'm using is listed under my Comp. Specs forum info as 'Main Computer MEGA-NUKE'.

I've had this computer for over half a year with no such trouble. The only thing I can think of that I've changed just before I noticed the issue was upgrading my OS to SP1, and downloading a few other important updates. I don't download any updates other than the ones listed as 'important' (exception is the Browser Choice Screen) as I've had bad experiences in the past with it, but I'm hoping Windows is better at handling updates currently.

Thanks in advance to anyone ATTEMPTING to help me.

EDIT: As far as I can tell all my hardware is UPDATED to the latest set of drivers provided by their manufacturers. I've unplugged all non-critical devices (keeping mouse, keyboard and screen).

EDIT2: Ran a full scan with AVG Free to no avail. My chipset drivers are fully updated.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]As a starting point I'd suggest running full scans with both your anti virus app AND MalwareBytes.

I'd also suggest checking for a bios update and a more current chipset driver.I suspect chipset driver...Thank you for the quick reply.

Is a BIOS update safe? I've been warned against it.

I've run full scans with AVG Free (sorry, forgot to mention).

I'm afraid to say my chipset driver is fully updated.

I'm performing a full scan on C: my only HDD with fully updated MBAM.I've performed literally dozens of bios updates over the years and never had a problem. Just follow the instructions. The biggest cause of problems is an interruption in the update (power outage, a user stops the update, etc). Can something bad happen? Sure, I suppose so. But I've never had any issues at all.

And it's my guess that if there is a bios update available, it will address your issue. It may be of use to know that I have an Asus P7P55D-E LX motherboard.

I've downloaded the latest BIOS version but I've yet to change anything. According to the website my version number is higher than the version that first supported my CPU, so I'd rather not 'flash' it or whatever UNLESS you feel it may help anyway.

EDIT: Okay, I'll do it as soon as MBAM's finished.First suggestion upon seeing ACPI.SYS: ensure you're using the latest BIOS available for your motherboard. Else, reset current BIOS settings after noting current settings. If you're overclocking, stop.

Well, the good news is your computer didn't explode
Yep, that's always desirable!

After defaulting my BIOS settings the problem is still the same as before. Any other ideas on how I can approach this?Let's try a selective startup.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Solve : Slow internet on one PC?

Processor is AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.60GHz
8 Gig memory
Network card: Qualcomm Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband

If you need anything else please ask.

I've tried many things, even SYSTEM restore but the earliest restore I could use was from the 20th which still had the problem. The internet seems to be fine now but it usually stops after awhile. I'll POST back here if it stops working as it should.

It's acting up again.Go to Speedtest and check...
You do realise the other units affect the speed ? ?This is from my laptop http://www.speedtest.net/result/2597281403.png
This is from my pc at the time http://www.speedtest.net/result/2597282831.png though it keeps going down and down. This is another test from my pc http://www.speedtest.net/result/2597287116.png

Earlier when I did one and it was http://www.speedtest.net/result/2597197998.png

Also, I don't get what you mean on the second line.Seems to be working fine again after running "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" and rebooting. If it starts messing up again I'll come back The 2ND line means that if one or more PC's are using bandwidth it will affect the 3rd PC...It shouldn't bother it to the extent that he's saying it is.

I assume you've tried to uninstall it by going to control panel and "programs and features" already.WHen I FOUND the black box and put in msconfig I searched through it twice and it is not there.!

Yes I went to the control panel and tried to delete it, but was told it did not exist.

But several time a DAY it pops up.

Solve : SP1 "failure configuring service pack"?

Answer»

I'm trying to install SP1 in Windows 7, but every time I start the computer after I installed SP1 it just say "failure configuring service pack" when it gets to 11%. It is the first time I install Win7 on a SSD, and it is a brand new. I have all of the updates that Windows update can find, and I downloaded some PATCH from Microsoft that was suppose to HELP with this issue.

I have renamed the "SoftwareDistribution" folder, I tried the "System Update Readiness Tool" and it always "Fixes" 2 problems, I have 20gig of free space, no errors on "SFC /SCANNOW" command, I downloaded the 2gig SP1 file from Microsoft and tried that.

Anyone know any fix, or should I just reformat Win7 again? Sounds like you had a faulty update. More than likely, ONE that got hung up. What I would do is reset the factory settings. That will in turn, reset all the system updates done. Now, re-install your new internet browser (IE9) and then the Service pack. Just In Case:

Solve : Cannot Install Microsoft Security Essentials?

Answer»

Once upon a time, I tried unistalling MSE because it was conflicting with other antivirus/malware programs.

Afterwards, I found I was unable to download any files from the internet, I would get an error saying "Virus scan failed, file DELETED".

I assume this was an issue with MSE, so I decided to reinstall it.

I uninstalled all my other antivirus/malware software, ran Ccleaner, downloaded MSE from a FRIEND's computer and ATTEMPTED to reinstall it on my machine.

The MSE INSTALLER comes up with an error about not being able to find or access epp.msi, and neither can I.

After getting frustrated by the snipe hunt on Microsoft's "TECH support" forum, I decided to try here.First, follow this link and download the removal tools for ALL of the listed programs you have installed or have previously had installed, even if you think you've already uninstalled them, including MSE:
http://experts.windows.com/w/experts_wiki/156.aspx

Next, make sure all Windows updates are installed and any important data is backed up.

When you're ready to install again, go to this link and download MSE and install again:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Note for the future: Never have more than one real-time antivirus running at the same time. Despite the logic that more protection is better, having more than one antivirus suite running at a time can and likely will cause a conflict. Install one real-time AV product and one firewall product (if your AV doesn't provide a firewall service).

Some items are exempt from this rule, like Malwarebyte's Antimalware since it doesn't do real-time scans. Always check for programs that might possibly conflict. If you aren't sure, you can always come back and ask. Nothing else has worked, so I went back to the earliest restore point and so far that seems to have fixed my issue. Hopefully re-installing windows updates will not break it again.

Solve : Is there a way to change folders and files behavior in Windows 7?

Answer»

My Operating System is Windows 7 Home Premium.

I ALWAYS had trouble with the libraries, folders and files in windows 7, which I never had with Windows XP. Is there some way I can change their behavior in Windows 7, at least approximately to how it was in XP?
Windows Explorer is not that much different between the two, so I don't UNDERSTAND what your problem is.Please explain what it is you're not happy with and WISH to change.1. MAINLY it is the saved files and/or folders appearing in other locations in addition to the library that I saved them in. For example, When I download and save a progrmme or file etc. from the internet to a particular library using 'save as' function, it also appears either in 'my documents or in the folder identified by my user name. Can this be changed so that the contents are found in only in the location that I save them in?

2. Can I do something to be able to freely move and arrange files and folders within the same location, The way it was possible to do in XP. Not being handicapped by the limited 'arrange' OPTIONS of Window 7.

Thank you.A Library is the aggregate content of multiple folders. When you save to a library, it saves to the "save" location within that library. To view these aggregate folders and which one is the save location, you can right-click and select Properties.

http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-libraries-feature-in-windows-7/
I would like to disable libraries using this script. Before doing that, can you please tell me what will happen to the files and folders in those libraries? Will they be saved in their defaut locations?

Thank you.Quote from: floccinaucini on March 23, 2013, 12:27:22 PM

They will remain where they are. A library is just a kind of imaginary folder. The important thing to remember is this: the subfolders are not actually stored in the library.

Your analogy of the library to an imaginary folder makes this very clear to me. This is something I have struggled with for some time. Then the sub folders; If they are not stored in the library, then they must be stored in another location. How is this location determined? Does the 'system' decide where to store them?

Thank youThey are gathered by the system from the existing folders. It will make a guess to start. For example the Documents library contains the user's My Documents folder, the Pictures will contain their My Pictures folder etc. Also you can add your own choices of folders. They are not moved or altered. The Library is like a kind of index.

You can do that on the desktop. I didn't know you could do that in XP folders, let alone Windows 7 folders.

Thank you very much for all the help. I think I can manage things now.

Kind regards. And kind regards to you too!

Very best wishes

Solve : Cannot View Folders (Win 7)?

Answer»

I can not seem to view folders, except in the drop down menu! I can files when I OPEN the folder, but I cannot see folders in the folder. Im not real sure when this first STARTED to happen, but I NOTICED it around a month ago. I dont know what caused, and Ive scanned for malware, and nothing came up. Any help would be APPRECIATED.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]May be all the folders have been hidden in your C drive.

GO to Organize>Folder Options, Under View tab enable Show hidden files and folders and press OK.Hmm I tried that and it didnt work. Any more help?
Oh and thanks for the suggestion! This may or may not matter but the screenshot appears to be from the built in Win burning app...
Which it retains previous burn sessions by default...
What happens if you open Explorer from the Start/Accesories tab ? ?I did open it from the start menu and from the accessories folder. It just slightly odd because I edited the explorer file to change the color and arrow buttons. But that was after this problem had already happened. Thanks for the advice though. I still cannot figure out what the problem is, unless its something in the registry, and I know absolutely nothing about that.

Solve : on starting computer black screen is displaying?

few days back my computer was not working.it is showing some realtech and pxe-0mf error
after that i fix it by RESETTING the bios setting
now computer is working
i can read the files, do the work bt the desktop is blank on start button N nothing
just black screen on that MICROSOFT explorer is open by which i can access the files
so how to get back the desktop
pls give some suggestions...
:-)I'd perform a Repair Installation if possible or using System Recovery Media that came with computer or was made using the tool the manufacturer made available for MAKING recovery set. It sounds like you have corruption of data on the hard drive, although odd that you had to reset the BIOS to fix an issue with Realtek (sound) and NIC ( PXE ). If this is not available, then create a bootable Linux disc such as Knoppix, Ubuntu, or Mint etc and boot system off the CD or DVD disc and make sure the computer runs correctly under the live environment to rule out any hardware issues that may be causing the problems. If you boot the CD or DVD and do not install it, you can run software off of the CD or DVD and exercise your system to make sure that the hardware is good and you are only dealing with data corruption on the hard drive.Double Post...

Solve : Clicking Hyperlinks Produce Error?

Answer»

Hi,

The problem started after I did a clean install of Windows 7 a few days ago. I'm receiving the attached error message any time i click a hyperlink in any application in Windows 7. The error message reads "This operation has been cancelled DUE to restrictions in effect on this computer. PLEASE contact your sys admin" he error first popped up in MS Outlook 2010, so I removed and reinstalled it without LUCK. I then checked to see if I received the error in another Office 2010 app. I tried clicking hyperlinks in MS Excel and produced the same error, so then I removed and reinstalled Office and still received the error.

I'm at a loss on how to trouble shoot further. Thanks for the help.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Did you register Office after the re-install ? ?No, I didn't register Office after the re-install. How do you go about it?I did confirm that Office 2010 is ACTIVATED. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.Try this Ms Fixit page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310049
If that doesn't work after restarting the computer also, you can also try suggestions on this page: http://www.slipstick.com/problems/this-operation-has-been-cancelled-due-to-restrictions/

FWIW, this problem also seems to be commonly encountered after uninstalling a web browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

Solve : .PPP document?

The atttachment to an email is a .PPP document, and my computer is not allowing me to open it. I am on wondows 7, a fairly new computer with lots of bells a whistles. Do I need another PROGRAMME to be able to open this file. Thank you in advance, EdnaYou need to figure out what software this file.ppp was created under. Once you know that then your system NEEDS this same software installed or a reader if there is one. One common hit on google for the .ppp file extension is a british desktop publishing program such as linked here: http://www.serif.com/desktop-publishing-software/

based on info contained here: http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/ppp I have never used the software available for download at this site, so download/install/use at own risk.Thank you for your prompt reply, Dave. I sense a note of caution. I think I will go back to the sender and ask for some more information, or a different format. It is normally in PDF from from this person. So I will go down that route first. Thank you for your input, Edna. It's a PagePlus document that is a common blogospere APP used...
It should open properly in Word.
A better thing for the sender to do is send you a LINK to the Topic/article they wanted you to see...

Have you tried Memtest86 on this system to make sure your memory is good. Also have you run any hard drive tests to make sure that your hard drive is healthy. (*Reason why i suggest checking your hard drive health is because if the hard drive is on its way out and virtual memory that is placed on the hard drive is troubled as a RESULT of bad read/write conditions it will cause a memory type of error even though its hard drive sourced as the cause of the problem.) Most of the time its a memory stick that has an issue and can be corrected as easily as replacing the stick or removing it from the system and running with lesser memory. However sometimes a corrupt OS build can also give these errors because it is failing to handle the memory properly with its memory management and the fix then is a repair installation or clean installation after backing up important data to EXTERNAL drive and formatting the hard drive to build the system clean.Ran memtest 86 on individual STICKS, no errors found.

Ran WD lifeguard, no ISSUES found.Flakey PSU...borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to test...

I'm curious. How did you deduce that based on those logs? To me it could be any hardware component at this point. How did you figure that out?

I have an HP tower and monitor. When I press ESC to get to boot menu or F10 for set up, it briefly shows the menu then goes into windows start up. Quickly between this period, my monitor (I assume) does an auto adjust notice. Could this auto adjust be causing the problem or is there something else I should be looking for?

Thanks for any help!!If you are STATING you don't get into setup by doing so then try repeated taps of the menu key that enables it...

Solve : Random Crash While Gaming on Win7?

Answer»

The title speaks for itself really. I recently finished replacing/upgrading all components within my current build. First, here are specs:

Asus Sabertooth 990FX
AMD FX 8120 8 Core CPU @ 3GHz w/Corsair H5O Liquid Cooling System
8gb G.Skill Ripjaw X DDR3-2400 PC19200
MSI GeForce GTX 670 w/Driver version 326.19
Intel 120GB 330 Series SSD
4 other 7200 rpm SATA HDDs totalling 1.7TB in space
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Edition w/Service Pack 1
OCZ ZT Series 750W Fully-Modular 80PLUS Bronze PSU

Now the problem:
It depends on the game as to how fast this happens but after a random amount of time playing, for example, GTA IV Episodes From Liberty City (Steam version), my monitors go either white or some random solid color (its never USUALLY the same color, dunno if that even matters) and my speakers will blare this nonstop buzzing noise (envision a slow motion Transformer robot sound during transformation). This goes on for maybe 30 seconds to a minute, then the sound quits and im just left with a blank screen (still with whatever color came up) and cannot do anything. It causes me to have to do a manual restart to get my system back up.

Just to give you an idea of how random it happens. I could run World of Warcraft all day and have zero issues. I played Kerbal Space Program for roughly 5 hours before I had my first freeze. GTA IV is the most random as it can happen anywhere from 5 minutes to possibly an hour.

This issue has tested every foundation of computer servicing I have gone to school for and it eludes me. All hardware has been tested and found with no fault (especially the RAM which I ran memtest on for just about a full day).

I hope someone has some pointers as to where I can start. Im even willing to backtrack previous diagnostics just to clear it from the list of things I have done.

Attached below is a picture I took from my phone as to what I see when this happens.

HALP! :O :O

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Did you start off with the 326.19 drivers, or upgrade from a previous version?
I would suspect a graphics issue before anything else, you could try the graphics card in a different slot to see if that makes any difference. Also, test it with the Unigine Heaven or Valley benchmarks or the Furmark test, leave it looped for a while to see if it does the same thing on a pure graphics test.
Is the firmware up to date on your SSD? Sandforce based SSDs can cause a number of issues, firmware updates can fix some. Also, is there a BIOS update for your board at all? Could be worth updating if there is.The SSD firmware is up to date. After getting the SSD I read reviews on it being one of Intel's worst SSDs on the market but it seems to do its job just fine.

There were 2 BIOS updates released from ASUS since I got the board back in April. Imma update them in chronological order release.

After that, ill game for a bit just to test functionality then if I am still having problems, I will loop a Unigine test for a bit. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks! No problem, let us know how it goes.
The 330 and other Sandforce based SSDs are certainly less reliable than Intel's older drives, which used Intel's own CONTROLLERS, however they do seem to be more reliable than other vendors' drives based on the same Sandforce controllers due to Intel writing better firmware and perhaps using better flash for the drives too.
See how you go once you have the BIOS updated to the latest version, and let us know the results of your tests if you have the problem again.Okay here is an update.

Updated my BIOS to it's latest revision and all seems quiet thus far.

I was able to play GTA IV for almost a solid 2 hours without any sort of graphical glitch what so ever (minus one appcrash the game itself had but it's expected as the game is a bad port from consoles). I even ran that Heaven BENCHMARK and it ran pretty well. Card got nice and toasty though, roasting in at 80C after several minutes but theyre designed to work at high heats like those so it's okay.

I really wanna say this problem is resolved but knowing my string of luck lately, it's probably just waiting for the right time to rear it's ugly head once again after I let my guard down.

As for now, I am pleased that I can play a game for a continuous amount of time without error.

Updating BIOS....sadly enough, with all my expertise, that was the last thing I would have thought of
Thanks again. If anything pops up, Ill post again. Ill post again after several days just to be sure this problem is cleared up. Those temperatures are absolutely fine for the GTX 670, as you said, so nothing to worry about there.

Glad to hear it seems to be working at least for now, fingers crossed it stays that way Of course as I attempt to give the all clear, the issue shows up yet again. No colors on the screen this time, just black screens and a buzzing sound for a short moment then silence, causing me to do a manual restart on the machine.

I have attached a Dxdiag and Msinfo32 file. I have split the Msinfo32 file into 2 separate documents, the second one being the Windows Error REPORTING aspect, since it appeared to be a large piece of the original document. I also had to compress them to zip format as the Windows Error Reporting log was slightly less than 1mb and the post allotment is only 700kb. I HONESTLY suspect it is software related. All my hardware is in the clear, diagnostic wise, but again, I am open to ideas.

Hoping for a swift reply on this one. Yesterday's gaming session sprouted a bit of hope, only for it to be brutally crushed yet again with this problem.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I would perhaps be inclined to try either rolling back your graphics drivers to a WHQL release such as 320.49, or try the latest beta drivers, 326.80, rather than your current beta drivers 326.19.
Also, it could be worth trying your graphics card in a different PCI-E slot.
Have you had problems in games apart from GTA4 since the BIOS update?
What speed are you running your RAM at, is it running at the spec in your signature? The max official RAM speed for the FX8120 is 1866MHz on two modules, which also raises the question whether you have 2x4GB, or 4x2GB? I would assume the former but just checking.Im at work right now but Ill leave a small update on here.

I downgraded to the WHQL release from Nvidia's site and will test that first since it's the easiest on the list of things to diagnose.

The crash happens in other games, just not as often. I mentioned in my first post that it even would happen while playing Kerbal Space Program. It has only happened once in it though. The issue doesn't appear to be unique to just GTA4, it just happens the most while running that game.

On another note, the ram I have is 2x 4GB sticks and I have em clocked at 2400mhz (my board picked up the profile they contained). Also I tried to clock em down to 1866mhz and my system became unresponsive.

I would like to mention that I had 16gb of Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600/PC12800 (4x 4gb sticks) before this new kit and had them clocked at their default of 1600mhz and the crash I am having still arose regardless so I can't be too sure the problem is ram related.

With the crashing being so random, its quite difficult to isolate the problem (5 minutes to 2 hours is quite the margin to work with). As for now, lets hope the video driver holds up since WHQL drivers are signed by Microsoft themselves and verified as stable. *fingers crossed*

I coulda swore computers operated in 1s and 0s, Yes and No, not "Maybe" and "Maybe not" lol
It's the whole reason I went to college for computer servicing in the first place! Quote from: Poissionnariat on August 29, 2013, 12:58:12 AM

Right, I saw that, I just meant had you had any crashes in other games since the BIOS update? I know it was crashing in other games before.

1866MHz is the maximum supported speed, 2400 may work fine but it is overclocking the memory controller so I would be inclined to try and get the system working at the supported speed before anything else. You would need to set the speed, timings and voltages as recommended by the manufacturer. When you say the system became unresponsive, what exactly happened?

I'm not necessarily suspecting the RAM, just trying to narrow it down. It could be the memory controller having trouble running at higher speeds, or running all 4 slots, or several other things.

Yeah, these kind of problems are the worst to diagnose! All you can really do is try and change only one thing at a time, until you can verify the problem is or isn't fixed.Okay so I caved and reinstalled Windows/updated and reinstalled games/programs. Although my efforts still seem futile.

It would seem the issue has shifted from the computer just straight failing on me (which is good, not requiring manual restart) to just giving me appcrash messages for games that fault out (which is still equally as annoying).

The crashes mentioned below are post-BIOS update/Windows reinstall & updating etc. (as to answer your previous question)

I attached the 2 appcrash messages for Kerbal Space Program and GTA 4 as those are the only 2 I have tested thus far. Again, the crash is random. I played KSP for maybe 20 minutes before it crashed and GTA IV for under a hour (even left to go somewhere and left the game paused only to come back and sit down then the game crash as I pick my controller back up).
I also am attaching a screenshot of the temps and gpu load my computer was at during the crash on GTA 4. Temps/load were almost identical for both games so I figured id just upload one. I noticed voltages from the board on the low side but looking in my BIOS, the voltages are right about their normal operational levels, maybe .010 off or so but nothing I would raise alarm to.

While the format in which the games crash has not triggered any need to manual restart since my Windows reinstall, it still boggles my mind that even on a fresh slate, problems still arise.
At any rate, I appreciate you still hanging around.

Edit: wanted to add that while the load in Kombustor says 0 at the time of the fault, the load was around 40-50% (cant remember specifics)

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I would replace the vid card myself...and hopefully return it under Warranty...I would probably agree with patio...seen MSI cards cause problems similar to this quite a few times. If you're still having issues on a fresh install, it's the most likely culprit.

I don't see any Windows 7 Drivers. It's possible your system was not intended to run Windows 7. What you can try is to create a disc image (Macrium Reflect is your best free option) to an off disc MEDIUM (second hd, dvd, etc). Then go ahead and install W7 and see if it will WORK with your current setup. Either it will or it won't. If it doesn't, you can restore the image.

Solve : computer desktop not filling up tv screen?

Answer»

Hello

I've just reinstalled my OS (Windows 7) and the desktop isn't filling up the tv screen. About 5" on either side is just black. I use a 40" Sony tv for my computer monitor. I have this problem every time i reinstall the OS and i'm not entirely sure what i need to do to sort it. I used to think if i messed around with the display/resolution settings it would fix but i think last time it didn't fix itself until i turned the computer off. When it was switching off it started doing an update and when i next switched the computer on the screen was filled so i assumed the update had done something.

Problem is when i switch off now there's not automatic update. Any ideas how to fix this problem?Quote

I have this problem every time i reinstall the OS
Why would you install the OS more that once a year?
Do you have the right drivers?
Using a TV set for a monitor can cause this problem. It is often the TV set that does not set the scan rate correctly. Try settings for resolution and refresh. The TV set should be set to 'auto' to get the scan correct.I have the same problem myself. Drives me crazy.
Here is one of many recommendations about how to overcome this.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/283844-33-using-monitor-fitting-full-screen
Quote
...
I had a similar problem with my LG HDTV. I resolved the issue by going into the HDTV's Picture Menu and WITHIN Aspect Ratio I selected "Just Scan" which resolved the problem WITHOUT having to go into the display manager. ....
So you have too fiddle with the TV sets display settings. I have done that, but still I have to turn the TV set on and off to get it to 'think' about the settings.
Hope this HELPS some. Just be patient.
If the black is on left and right sides and not the top and bottom, it's likely you're using a resolution that's 4:3 or 5:4 instead of 16:9 (or whatever the ratio of your TV is). Try setting your resolution to 1366×768, 1600×900, or 1920×1080 (all 16:9 resolutions). 1280x720 will also WORK on a 16:9 screen, but some fixed window size programs won't fit on the screen (limited to a minimum of 768 vertical).

If on the off chance your screen is 16:10 (or 8:5), try 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, or even 1920x1200 (all 16:10 resolutions).

If you have black on all 4 sides and your screen is 16:9, try setting the resolution for a PROGRESSIVE scan resolution, like 720p (1280x720) or 1080p (1920x1080), and it should fill the screen. Some TVs have trouble with other 16:9 resolutions.

Have you run MEMTEST86 on this computer to verify the RAM is good. Run it for about 4 or 5 passes. This might take an hour or so. No, did not run this test. Can you please tell me how to do that? ThanksQuote from: Allan on March 15, 2013, 03:16:09 PM
1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
2) Are you running Vista or W7?
3) Hardware specs?
1) It is hard to tell wether there was something new or different since last time because of course there were changes to software, hardware. I cen tell you tht the FIRST bluescreen appeared within a few days after I purchased the machine when I hardly had the chance to install anything. The bluescreens appear not frequently and not regularly but randomly and especially when there is something connected to the machine such as, a scanner which works off USB port, a SD card plugged directly into the port, or a flash drive. I use flash drives a lot but they are mine and I bought them clean, so I do not use unknown to me flash drives. But note, there may be days or months and nothing may occur when these flash drives are used.
The screens seem to appear when there are a lot of tasks performed at the same time, e.g. anitvirus is conducting a scan and windows is downloading updates, IE is running, and an SD card is plugged in, etc. But this may not happen at all. Yes, I do log off and exit all applications properly and in 90% of cases nothing happens

2)It's windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

3) here are some specs:
Intel core i7-2600 quad-core , 3.8 Ghz, 8mb cache
12 gb ddr3-1066mhz sdram [3dimms]
1.5 Tb RAID 1 (2 X1.5TB SATA HDDs)
3GB DDR NVIDIA GetFroce GT 440 (DVi, HDMI, VGA)1) Is the machine over-clocked? If so, can you disable that feature please?
2) Make and MODEL of computer?
3) Please look in device manager. Any yellow or red symbols?
4) The fact that this occurs infrequently and randomly makes it difficult to diagnose. Let's go ahead and check the ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.Dear Allan,

1)Sorry, I do not understand what "over-clocked" means. What does this mean?

2) This is HP Pavillion HPE h8t

3) Looked in the device manager, no there are no yellow or red symbols

4) I downloaded the memtest and burned to a cd as an .iso file. This is where I am stuck. I could not change the boot order. I had to call HP to help me find the BIOS utility. Once in BIOS, I did find the "Boot" prompt and the menu for boot priority there is called "boot order" and there were directions unlike in other BIOS menus. There were no choices of 1st boot device, 2nd boot device, etc. but there were prompts at the bottom F10 save, Enter- drag, F5 disable. Devices where "CD-ROM Devices", Hard Drive" and something else. I figured out how to palce CD-Rom Devices on top of "Hard drive" but the "Cd-Roms" are never on the very top because there is another option there, on the very top, that's not going away. I was able to move CD-ROMS up above the hard drive and I did "Save and Exit" in the File menu. At this moment the CD Rom was in the Drive F. Once I exited the BIOS, the machine still booted Windows 7, not the CD . I again restarted, entered BIOS and tried disabling "Hard Drive". Once I saved and exited, the machine said the "device was not found", or something to that effect and was not able to go any further. I had to restart, go into BIOS again and enabled the hard drive and logged on to Windows and am writing to you this message.

All this time the Disc is in the drive F

I am going to try to go back into BIOS so I can copy what options I have to describe them for you. later.

Sorry, this is getting too advanced for me at this point.

I am simply afraid of causing harm to the machine. Dear Allan,

I went into BIOS once again and this is its set-up:

The first two menus on top are File and Storage.
Under Storage there is the BOOT ORDER
In the BOOT ORDER command the window is as follows

UEFI Boot Sources
Legacy Boot Sources (this is where the arrow presently is)
Hard Drive
Intel RAIDVOL
Network Controller
ATAPI CD-ROM

F10 Accept, ESC- Cancle ENTER=Drag

I tried movinfg the arrow to ATAPI CD-ROM and then used Enter key to move it above Hard Drive but it never goes above the Legacy Boot Sources or UEFI Boot Sources

What can be done?

Thank you!

Solve : NO VIDEOS??

Answer»

Hiya fellas'!

I hope you can help me up here! Why would videos suddenly refuse to perform on my machine guys?? Everything else is working fine but suddenly, any video I click on just refuses to go into action! Please help me will ya! ??All videos or just web streaming content etc or only local videos

If only local videos:

I had an issue a long time ago like this when I was running Windows XP Home on a old Compaq Presario around 2005. Any video I tried to play would just black screen, some would be black screen and not play at all and other ones would have audio only and complain about a codec issue. I ended up rebuilding my system with factory restore CD disc and that fixed it.

If you dont want to perform a reinstallation you can try downloading the VLC Player which is free and if that doesnt work then maybe its a video driver update could be suggested.

If only youtube flash or streaming content then I would make sure you have the latest version of Flash installed. I have run info issues before where I needed to install Flash or Update Flash to correct this. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Fortuitously, I have a series of system backups, so I can resort to this if I need. In fact I have just doe this so that I can start getting on with my life! LOL! However, I am tired of keep ending up here so what is going wrong I wonder?? Quote from: GLOOPS on August 30, 2013, 01:25:42 PM

Hiya fellas'!

I hope you can help me up here! Why would videos suddenly refuse to perform on my machine guys?? Everything else is working fine but suddenly, any video I click on just refuses to go into action! Please help me will ya! ??
I've got to tell you, I have absolutely no idea what you are asking. Are you talking about downloaded videos, Youtube, streaming media in general... EXACTLY what is the problem?? !st question...did you get your last issue here resolved after usin registry cleaners and is this the same PC ? ?No Patio I did not mate. I ended up using the last backup image I had to get me back to where I was. I have done the same here. It was the quickest answer for me.

I have deduced the problem here, but not the cause it is I.E.! I do not know what is HAPPENING, but suddenly video's won't work and then I cannot download from sites' and some graphics do not appear! For instance all the similes disappear from this reply page! I need to know what is happening, because it keeps happening so "what am I doing" I wonder?

Fortunately, having this record of regular visits' up here, I decided on a strategic plan. Getting tiered of having to COMPLETELY re-format and start again, as the answer, I have done a system image backup of my drive periodically right from my last format. I have six of them, so I can go back to various stages of development on my drive. I'll tell you what! It beats the *censored* out of keep having to start from scratch every time my friends!

So I am OK now, until the next problem occurs.

This problem definitely was Internet Explorer. Anyone got any ideas as to how to keep IE in good condition? Sorry Yes it is the same PC Patio lad.

Solve : Install Genuine copy of Win 7 in a pc with pirated win7-XP dual boot?

Answer»

???My PC is Dell Inspiron All In One 2020 with 4 GB RAM.
I am a novice to win7-XP DUAL boot. Pls help!
A service engineer installed Windows 7 (probaby PIRATED) (7 in C:) and then XP ( XP in D:) but ADVISED me not to use Windows Updates!
I now have a genuine copy of windows 7 and would like to install genuine Win 7 over the previous (?pirated) install so that I NEED not face Windows Genuine problem and can use Windows Updates too.
PLEASE tell me whether there will be any problem?
If there will be no problem, please help me with detailed instructions - as for a dummy / idiot / noobie - how to overwrite Windows 7 only and retain the Win 7 (Genuine)- XP dual boot and all data in the other drives.
TIA!

Solve : Error Code is: 0x8007232B. It says "DNS name does not exist."?

Answer»

I'm trying to Activate a LEGAL, LEGAL copy of Win7 Enterprise 64Bit! I'm getting an error CODE when I try to do it online:

The Error Code is: 0x8007232B. It says "DNS name does not exist."
I wish geeks would learn how to talk english.

I found the little $29 doodad ErrorEnd. REALLY? M'soft can't give me a free solution? I didn't do anything wrong. Oh! It doesn't really MAKE sense to do a restore, when I never got Windows activated anyway. Am I correct on this assumption. So, I bought the stinking doodad, and it still didn't work! I COULD REALLY use some help here. Welcome to CH. Here you get free advice from volunteers and it costs you nothing.
Sorry to hear you got stuck for $29.

I have installed Windows 7 and Windows 8 and only recently, in the past 3 days, did I start to receive fake messages for me to buy something.

My best idea is to install again. That what I do. I have all by person stuff in another place.Mostly on external drives, but my downloads I keep on flash drives.

Sounds like the copy is Volume Licensed, which would make sense if it is the Enterprise Edition, being that, at least to my understanding, there aren't Retail keys for the Enterprise editions.

Basically, Enterprise Editions will typically connect to a Key License Server in order to activate, rather than the standard Retail Activation Process you expect, at least by default. (a sensible default considering the Enterprise Edition is more likely to be used by Enterprises).

From what I can determine, fixing this would require you to change your product key to a "Multiple Activation Key" Which from what I can determine pretty much similar to a Retail key, in that it will cause the Activation process to connect to Microsoft's Activation Servers, rather than search for a KMS host on your LAN.

BC, does the MS documentation SUGGEST you can upgrade from the enterprise evaluation?
This was over three years ago.

Following the 90 day evaluation period, IT Pros who wish to continue to use Windows 7 Enterprise will be required to purchase and perform a clean installation of Windows 7, including drivers and applications.
Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 90-Day Trial is the final Released-to-Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 7 Enterprise Edition. This is the same software that is available to Volume Licensing (VL) through Software Assurance (SA) and is feature-complete

Here I have the Windows 8 enterprise and it can not be upgraded. If and when i but it, Windows 8 has to be a clean install.

So, IMHO, he might as well just install again.

Solve : Blue Circle Icon over Taskbar in Windows7?

Answer»

OK, so hello again.

I've got at present this little problem with Windows 7

Whenever I move the cursor of my touch-pad mouse over the taskbar (INCLUDING system tray) along the bottom of my screen, as if to open the window for that program (e.g., explorer, skype, Windows start menu [windows BUTTON]) the 'normal' cursor becomes the circulating blue circle and I am unable to anything from the taskbar. I have noticed that time has not advanced since the problem first OCCURRED (16:06 26/08/2013)

I can open programs and documents that are on my desktop (e.g. Firefox), by reducing the area of any open windows and dragging them out of the way. (if I minimize them, I can't access them again - see above). Also, all the windows that were open when this problem first occurred seem to work as usual. cntrl-alt-del works, and that's possibly my only way of resetting/shutting down/turning off. I have used this to open the task manager - CPU usage is not high, mem usage 3.5GB, several IE9 processes inexplicably running, but I don't understand a lot of it.

I also have on my screen (permanently on top in the same location) a small window containing the words "Performs text-based (command-line) functions", left over from when I tried to open a DOS prompt as administrator (right click on DOS prompt in start>show all programs>accessories). That was this problem started (I was doing this because....well, it's long for me type)

What has happened ? How can I solve this problem and resume normal operations ? (I have not reset my computer since - if I can, I may not be able to use anything)

It's possible its doing a Windows or HP update. Perform a shutdown which will install updates, if any.Thank you answering my plea.
OK, I will try a restart (shut down, power on)
During previous updates this has never happened before. It has been going on for more than 24 hrs now. The issue may resolve itself anyway onn restart, updates or no. It is certainly outside my (limited) experience anyway,
I'll tell you the result tomorrow.

What is this supposed to mean ? ?-> Patio
I was referring to Computer_Commado's signature notice immediately before I wrote my reply, which, I have now observed, changes each time I access this page.

You can delete, or I will if I can, if you like, that sentence.

Dumb_Question
28.August.2013You said you can open task manager. Do that, and go to file -> run -> type msconfig -> press enter.

Uncheck the items under startup and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If it does, do the same thing and recheck the items.so yesterday night I gave in (because I'd been waiting, and mostly because I accidentally minimised IE9 which meant I'd no way of getting access to it), cntrl-alt-del'd, selected 'restart' from the red button at lower RHS of screen, and rebooted, as Computer_Commando suggested.

Upon restart, everything appeared to be working again, the blue circle had gone (except for short periods when PC was busy), and my start menu programs had returned. I had access to my computer again. There did not appear to be any updating having gone on.

-> Linux711
Thank you for your suggestion but I think it is unnecessary now. There is no 'reboot', only a 'boot' tab, and under that there are no relevant (it seems to me) options.

What I meant was, uncheck the items under the startup tab and - restart your machine (don't look for reboot tab).->Linux711
I'm sorry I misunderstood what wrote. Thank you for making it clear.
