Solve : Hard Drive Error?

Answer»

Greetings to the Group - I RECENTLY had another hard drive added internally and I'm getting this constant error " the following hard disks are reporting failure. Disk Name SAMSUNG HD502HJ ATA Device". The disk is empty but I formatted it and ran check disk and everything is fine. I copied a test file, video file, and the drive is fine, the file is there and plays normal. There is absolutely nothing odd with the drive in copying to and from it, or reading files. The tech did unplug the case fan because he needed that plug for the hard drive. Therefore the fan is not used. I don't need the fan as this pc is in a constant air conditioned room as we live in the Philippines and the pc doesn't get warm at all. So what is the problem with it as I get this error constantly and when I just cancel it, it comes back shortly. The error offers to back up what's on the drive, but there isn't anything anyway. I wonder if the problem might be something to do with the wiring harness or the plug that was used for the hard drive. The system is a new W7 Basic pc with a couple of other hard drives, see attached.

Any Ideas on this?

THANKS,
Jim

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]What and where is the reporting error ocurring ? ?
Is it a Windows message ? ? or is it a boot message on startup ?

P.S. Air conditioning is fine...but all heated components still need airflow...especially in humid conditions. It's come at boot and remains on my screen. I just minimize it so I can work. If I close it or cancel it, just comes back in a few minutes. I can't get rid of it at all.

JimIf it comes on at boot up it's a Smart HDD error message...the drive is failing.
I wouldn't trust it with any important data...even though as you SAY it works.OK and thanks for your help. So then it's the hard drive itself, or in a connection do you think?

JimYes, forced air is needed.

What is the model number of the PC?
How MANY drives does it have?
What kind of power supply does it have? The mention of not meany plugs makes me imagine that the PSU was not intended for heavy use.
Is this a PATA drive? havering a wide ribbon cable? If so, the jumpers my not have been set right. Or the cable is not being used correctly. I have seen techs put the ribbon cable in the wrong way. Or use a 40 pin a the 80 pin is needed.Ribbon cables cant go in the wrong way...thats why they are keyed on top.Quote from: patio on February 28, 2013, 08:10:54 PM

Yes they can. Some techs put the slave into the motherboard. That is wrong.Quote from: Geek-9pm

This is a SATA drive. Anyhow, as far as I know, with an 80 WIRE (modern) IDE cable, the motherboard/slave/master connector designations only mean anything if the drives are jumpered for Cable Select. If the drives are jumpered for master & slave it does not matter at all which connectors you use. With the older 40 wire cables, it never mattered.

Now I am wondering if that is right...MB=========================slave======master.

As you said this may be a carryover from the 40 conductor leads but it is the proper connection layout.I would sudjest a thourough checkup on the autencity of the HDD, make sure that the jumpers are not set wrongly, also I would advice on a change of HDD, or make good sure not to place into it any valuable document.Problem solved! I ran SeaTools by Seagate and the hd failed one of the tests, so it went back to be replaced. Thanks for all of your input here.

Solve : Problems in IE/Firefox?

Answer» COULD ANYONE tell me what is happening here:-
This is my NTL home page in Firefox...this also happens in IE
Some pages do load correctly but others don't.
I have checked through both browser option, cleared cache etc, and have done a "repair" windows
But the problem still persists. It's like HTML has been switched off. The webpage components do not display correctly and also seem to cascade down from top to bottom in-line.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wizz
I sometimes have the same sort of problem with many different sites.
Happens with MSN/Live, ATI/AMD support pages, Microsoft, Windizupdate, and probably some more.
It happens intermittently, and for apparently no reason, unless this counts - I notice that most of the time when this happens, my wireless connection icon says that it is connected with excellent signal strength, but says nothing about the speed, this also happens in network connection properties (left click icon in system tray).
The problem never happens when the speed is reported, but it sometimes doesn't happen when it isn't shown, if that makes sense.
Some other applications fail to connect entirely when this happens, such as Spybot:S&D, Spyware Blaster and Antivir.
Also, sometimes IE will connect to the page but will refresh it several times, then display an "unable to connect" page. The network troubleshooter it directs me to reports no problems.
Apologis for the thread hijacking, but I just thought I'd let you know that there are other people with the same problem - I haven't made my own thread because this hardly ever happens with me, so it doesn't bother me so much, but if anyone finds a solution I'd be interested, I'll keep checking this thread.
Plus I hope that someone can help wizz, I'm just sorry I couldn'tThis is caused by a failure to load or use the cascading stylesheets for the page in question. What Firefox extensions are you using? Some can disable or modify CSS. Alternatively some other internet SECURITY program may be blocking .css pages for some inexplicable reason.Quote

Flashgot, IE View, Google Web Accelerator, and ForcastFox.
Please bear in mind that I have been using these extensions for some time..with no trouble.
Please also bear in mind that this problem is duplicated in the IE browser too.
This does not happen to all pages, but it is random. My NTL home page always has this problem..sometime the linked pages will display correctly, sometimes they wont.

I'm seriously considering wiping my disk and starting again.

That might not be a bad idea; but why not try temporarily disabling your internet security software/firewall and reloading the rogue page. Let us know if it makes any difference.Quote

Solve : computer malfunction?

Answer»

Am benjamin by name and resently my computer has developed sertain malfunction, I use a windows 7, and have a 2GB memory space, I had an idea to install a new OS software into my system, in an attempt to do so I MADE a new patision and assigned 1GB memory space to it, the plan seemed positive, I procceded to install the new software into the new partition,(windows XP 2000) after the proccess pressented it self as PROGRESSIVE, I tried to access the initial primary OS software(windows 7) I found it clearly imposible.

Please what are the possible solutions to ENABLING me access the other software? The best way to install multiple operating systems is to install the oldest Windows version first. That way the BOOT loader in the newer OS will recognize the older version and make it available at boot. Since you didn't do that, your best option now is to download and run the free version of EasyBCD (http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/)EasyBCD, what does this do? Is it some kind of activational software or just a bootup assistant of some kind?

Even after downloading it is there any possible garanty on the O/System operational on the system prio to the installation of the new one would be accesable? It's software to help you MANAGE the bootloader options. Why don't you visit the website and read what it does?Very greatfull, ill give it a try and get back in touch with you.

Solve : Windows Vista, Yes or No??

Answer»

This Is basically just an add on to the previous topic I had semi about Vista, But I thought It would be better to make A new thread and see where it went. Also, I want to know what people think. Unless you have a space age dual core 10grand computer I suggest that you throw the Vista CD in Bills face and say "Make it again." That man creates crap and crap only. The Vista Beta version doesn't even work on my friends brand new computer, he spent over $5000 AUD and is still upgrading. He installed it and it was so god *censored* SLOW it was ridiculous, if you want a cool looking graphical interface then get Linux or buy a friggin Mac. There's no point buying Vista, or even downloading it, it's rather ghey. It's just like that STUPID 360 box, my friend (same one) bought one and egged me on to get one, I said I'll wait for the next best thing, he installed some sort of FIRMWARE on his and then had to do the whole updates with XBOX Live. Now he is unable to use his 360 for some reason along with 5% of other people who have the same CD/DVD drive and Microsoft are refusing to compensate him and are telling him there is nothing they can do about it, if that happened to myself, I'd buy a ticket to the U.S, knock on Bill's door and politely ask for a refund, and if not, the the politeness will turn into anger and the 360 would have an imprint of Bill's face on it. bah rambling//

The point is Vista is too buggy, too slow, and when it screws up, Microsoft won't do anything about it, just like XP, as if the error sending reports actually make it to anyone at MS, probably all goes to a hdd which is formatted every day. It just looks pretty, Vista that is, I'm not saying that it's ugly, it's just not Windows if you know what I mean. Buy a Mac or use Linux if you want your desktop to look cool, or get widgets for christ sake, don't waste your money on a bunch of pretty interfaces that will eat your ram like it's going out of fashion.

heh, quite suprising that I didn't add 'z0r' or 'izzle' anywhere. 1337$%&^$%. Was this an official release version of Vista or an "ahem" version ? ?

I've been bench testing it for 7 WEEKS or so ( 2 releases ) and not seen any of those nightmares. Glitches yes but nightmares not a one.
YMMV.What do you expectt? It's Microsoft. What else can they make but %$#@. Would like to put BG in a toilet bowl so that he would know what S%&# tastes like.

Mac rules.

B.Windows Vista looks pretty, isn't their some kind of promotion going on? If you buy a Windows Vista ready PC you may be elgible to get Vista for free or something once it comes out?

The Xbox 360 doesn't even work anymore? What a waste... I like consols and might get Playstation 3. I like how Playstation 3 will be backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 games. While 360 requires some kind of emulator? But the price of PS3............. I play games casually so maybe I'll just forget about it until it drops a hundred at least. I have gamecube cause I grew up with nintendo, it's the perfect little consol for traveling.

I remember that when they made a tiny version of the original playstation console, it would over heat and sometimes the game will actually freezes on you. I even ran a racing game and temporary all the cars wheels converted in to squares. I wonder if such issues would occure with the PS2 slim consoles.........

Being a comic book fan, I love the screenshots of the new Ghost Rider video game. You can ride the bike on ground, on buildings, and then rocket yourself over the roof!! What games are you guys looking forward to?

I followed the INSTRUCTION but i dont had hdd recovery,so i cant choose restore factory settings.
If you are saying there is no recovery partition on your hd, and if they did not provide a recovery disc with your system, you'll need to contact Toshiba.I WOULD CHECK at the Toshiba website...most laptops have a hidden restore partition that resets everything back to Day 1 status...
Ihe instructions for using it will be listed.

Solve : {Help Request} - Weird Desktop folder in downloads folder?

Answer»

Hi, so I have COME across some sort of problem on my laptop.

In my 'Downloads' folder at:

C:\Users\DELL\Downloads

I have a 'Desktop' like folder that looks like the one in the favorites section:

When I delete this folder from the downloads which I want to do, it also deletes like my entire desktop, removing EVERYTHING of it,
and also when ever I try to access the desktop folder on the favorites feature, I get this this error message:

It's like my desktop has changed loacations to my downloads some how and I have no IDEA how to get it back to normal.

Also I'm not SURE if this is part of the same problem, because it happens when I delete or don't delete the desktop folder..
But when I riight click on a video or image or anything like that, or any FILE type, and click open with, and choose default programme I get this error message:

(That was trying to choose default programme to open it with for a random picture in my dowloads folder, though I get the same message no matter on the location or how new/old the file is)

Any help with these issues will be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance. When did this begin? Were there other error messages, even unrelated ones? Did you recently install some 'free' software? Did you visit a porn site? Do you hkave a resident virus protection? This has been happening for quite a while, and I use AVG full protection along with frequent searches with Spybot, and Malwarebytes. there is no other messages nor have there ever been. and I only download and install files from places I know are trusted, and I carefully read what I'm installing when installing something. As for porn sites, yeah sure, but only one I've been using for a very long time and have never had a issue with.. but if that was to download a virus surely AVG, or spybot, or Malware bytes would pick it up.OP said:

Hard to say. The number of known infections is over 3 billion. I read that somewhere.

Here are some things to test. Boot in safe mode. Also, try using another user account. You may have corruption of a user account. That may or may not be related to malware. Try that and see what you find. I think the folder is only in you main user account. If the account is corrupted, you can fix it readily.Try this link http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104440-favorites-restore-default-favorite-links-navigation-pane.htmlQuote from: jason2074 on August 13, 2013, 11:34:38 PM

After deleting my desktop folder then going to that site, and downloading the new one from there, it actually worked, so thank you.

Glad to hear it worked. Thank you also for posting back!

Solve : Overclocking, Is it necessary??

Answer»

Well I was looking around at the Microsoft site, and I was reading about Vista and its System Requirements.Quote

A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:

A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
512 MB of system memory.
A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Now Im Not Sure If my Computer Is DirectX 9 capable, But my question is there any WAY to upgrade my processor to 800mhz from 730mhz with out overclocking? Or should I just get a new tower anyways.

Also, I don't know if this will come to surprise but you can download Betas of Vista off there site, thats why I sorta wanna do this That is the minimum. You will need much more than that to tolerate it. A newer system is recommended if you feel the need. No need to overclock that machine, even if it is possible.

What do you specifically see as a reason to use Vista? I'm doing a study.Eye Candy , Also thats sorta want to try it to see If it is actually worth purchasing.A difference of 70MHz isn't going to make much difference in terms of being able to run Vista, but like said don't expect good performance.People are going to sucked in by the eye candy. I prefer functionality and efficiency.I guess you and I are the only holdouts 2K.I think a lot of people are going to be disapointed with Vista once they get over how "pretty" it looks. Its another move in the direction of MS having complete control of what can and cannot run on a machine.Quote

Good old Uncle Billy and his good old wind-ohs.

Solve : DVD-R Burning?

Answer»

I want to burn pictures on a DVD-R so it will play on COMPUTERS and a TV USING which is connected with Blueray or DVD player. Can I use Window Microsoft AutoPlay (Burn files to disc) or would I have to use Window DVD Maker.I'd use a DVD Movie Maker application, which will ALLOW for it to be made in the correct format / region etc and allow for editing if needed etc.Thank you for your reply, I will download W. DVD Maker and use that program.
Smart Dumb Senior.Just wanted to mention that if the Blu-ray or DVD player already supports viewing jpegs and images are in this format then a disc burned using windows burn to disk should be able to play these in a slide show. However if the Blu-ray or DVD player does not have photo viewing support then the images will have to be converted into a slide show movie. I haven't done this yet, but seen other people state that they created one with Nero 5 for example ( old VERSION of Nero and old internet reference ). I have a newer version of Nero at home and will check it out when I get out of work. The only catch to using Nero is its not a FREE software, so if you find a free software that has movie making capabilities, scan it first of malware before installing etc, and give that a try.

Solve : Problematic Folder?

Answer»

I use WINDOWS XP Professional as my operating system and, for many YEARS, I have been collecting thousands of screen grabs into a vast number of folders within one main folder. I have this data stored on TWO external NTFS hard drives and they are supposed to mirror one another.

I have now discovered that my laptop with 2GB of RAM cannot open that top-level folder and won't supply right-click functionality.

The drive *is* flashing as though it is possible access could be granted if I were to wait long enough for it all to load.

However, in the past I have "learnt the hard way" that if you use long file names and have long navigation paths within Windows you can lose access to files.

Have I exceeded a maximum which means I have permanent lost all means to retrieve ANY of the data ?

I should be receiving a new Windows 7 machine with 16GB of RAM within the next week. Is there any hope that that device will help me regain access or have I lost all of the data FOREVER ?
Crikey ! I have been struggling with this all morning - and, as soon as I come here to post my problem - it has gone !

I think I was, perhaps, too impatient with the (apparently) non-responsive Folder. My Toshiba computer that these hard drives were connected to broke about three months ago and I have not used these external drives since then. I have connected them
to a different laptop today - and it was the FIRST time - so perhaps some indexing had to occur - and because that goes on in the background, I thought nothing was happening and that nothing would again.

I'd still like to know if I should be careful about file storage though.

If the details from Properties is correct I have 10.8GB of pictures as 220,478 images in 1,158 folders. Is it important for me to reorganise this or is it safe to CARRY on adding ?To be on the safe side i would split it into smaller chunks and burn it to DVD so you have a hard copy...
Note: single - layer DVD's hold approx 4 G of data so you'll have to re-organise them to your liking.

Solve : Downloads Timing Out?

Answer»

Hi, I am WONDERING if SOMEONE can solve my problems with downloads stopping at (almost complete) and a time out window appears. I have adjusted the registry to 240 sec to time out and Firefox browser EXTENDED the timeout. These have both had no effect. I use IDM and get reasonable D/L speeds with Vivid Wireless. I have attached a LOG of a download that stopped at around 99% and I hope somebody can give me a clue from this. Thanking You. Ron.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Contact the people that sold you the movie and ask for your money back.

Is this the movie you were downloading? What do they charge for then download? It is a recent flick and I hunk it would be very costly.
Instead of a download, you could buy it and have it shipped to you in a couple of days.

Wait, I forgot to ask where you live. Here in the USA that movies is not ready for streaming or download. In what country do they let you download it?
Just took a LOOK at Amazon. They will stream it to your for about $4 for a one-time view.

Solve : Windows 7 key validation error/bug?

Answer»

I've been using windows vista on my pc till a few weeks back. My friend installed his version of windows 7 on my pc, and used his activation code on the installation. Till then everything was fine. Now I'm reading that in 3 days the windows version will be INVALID and it won't let me valid my friend's code. (while it's still a valid license).

One of the clear issues I can see is that on my computer properties, there's a different product key for windows then the one I received for windows 7, and whenever I want to edit it, it still goes back to a different one. (Maybe this can be because I didn't delete the windows.old yet?)

If I can't find ANY sollution to this problem, is it possible to retreive my old windows from the windows.old files?

Thanks a lotFind out exactly how he did this...Did he install Win7 right over your Vista install ? ?
If so your data is most likely gone...
You may find some stuff in the Windows old folder but again that all depends on how he did the installation...
As far as going back to Vista it's likely too late for that but you could always do a clean install of Vista if thats what you want.

For his activation on Win7 he may want to CONTACT MS...they do have an 800 phone #.The W7 installation wasn't done as an UPGRADE for the vista installation, but as a new one. As for MS support, do they answer live, or do I get an automated answering-machine?

Could it be that it will help if I bring my pc to my friend's house and try activating it there seen it might be ip-bound?The activation phones are answered by a real live person...QUOTE from: patio on February 20, 2013, 07:21:37 AM

Solve : Hasta la Vista, baby.?

Answer»

I just tried out the Vista at a friend's house, it doesn't impress me a bit. To me it looks and feels like a
B-rated re-make of the OSX. (especially on the GUI.)

Just wondering what your opinions are? Whould you give MS $200+ for its inferior product?

After trying it out. I feel like saying hasta la Vista, baby.

B.So you are judging an operating SYSTEM purely because of its visual style? Personally I think the XP theme looks like it was drawn like a 3 year old, but I still use XP because of the technical advancements over 9x etc. But obviously any of Vista's actual technical abilities don't seem to have made any contribution to your opinion.

Sorry to be harsh, but don't judge a BOOK by it's cover, nor an OS by its visual style The first time I saw XP witht he new default look, I thought THAT was done by a youngster. On the machines I have used XP on I quickly reverted to all classic settings and turned off all of the eye candy.

Vista promises more of the same preponderance of look over innovation I fear. I still cannot get one good reason that people want Vista, what it offers them, other than it's new and "kewl". What can you do that you cannot do now?

Anyone? My feelings exactly GX_Man, I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would choose XP over W2K.
I believe many people did the leap from 98 to XP because of the hype with the XP launch without realising that W2K was XP without the eye candy.Quote

You are so right. After I got in a habit of this 5 speed, an automatic would

bore me to death.
"On the machines I have used XP on I quickly reverted to all classic settings and turned off all of the eye candy. "

I did the same thing, whst's wrong with the W2K's classic look? I still prefer Win2K over XP as well. It seems to me MS covers up all the holes in a wall with wallpaper instead of FIXING the real problem of the OS. I think they are doing the same thing with Vista.

B.If Windows is so bad, don't use it I've been running Vista RC2 on my testbench machine for 5 weeks now...

No COMMENT yet...Quote
If Windows is so bad, don't use it

I think you miss the point. A lot of people are still locked in by their mindset, or the apps they use or their kids, or whatever. That doesn't mean they have to like it. I find it amazing that it has evolved in size astronomically for hard drive, and other system requirements while offereing minimal, if any, improvements in performance of anything.

Personally, I'm a Linux guy, but I would lose my favorite hobby if I gave up on Windows users.

Neil, what will Vista allow you to do in February (or whenever) that you are not able to do right this minute? What enhancement "does it" for you?

Solve : Boot problem, Windows 7 x64?

Hello. Here's my situation: I bought a new laptop (Compaq CQ58-203SM, http://www.bcgroup-online.com/proizvodi/laptop-i-notebook-racunari/hp-Compaq-CQ58_203SM(C6J02EA)+2GB-Sodimm-18368/), downloaded Windows 7 x64 from a trusted web site (msdnaa), installed it, installed drivers* (chipset, ethernet and network adapter; audio driver was already installed), downloaded all programs, like antivirus (Avira), Google Chrome, etc., updated windows multiple times, but after one boot, it was all messed up: first, Windows loaded extremely slow, second, my network adapter and Avira, were uninstalled, which i noticed in Control Panel, as well as uninstalled Google Chrome, Foxit reader, etc., everything except Ethernet driver and Dropbox. The computer still boots very slowly, and it is dysfunctional. I hope I provided you with enough information. Thanks.

*on Compaq site, there were no drivers for this model for Windows 7, only for Windows 8, but I downloaded these http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=5273664&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=5259206&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4063Kind of surprised that this computer was sold "without" an operating system as (BEZ) in polish indicates on the website. Usually when you have to provide an OS for a system it costs more than buying a system with preinstalled OS, or at least thats the way it is in the USA.

As far as the system being slow, a number of factors can cause this. But the 2GB of RAM this system has is minimal for Windows 7 64. I have had SYSTEMS running way better on 4GB with Windows 7 64 bit. However this system also appears to have other issues before looking into performance bottlenecks.

The only two things I can see that may have caused the issue was performing too many installations/changes without reboots in between to REFRESH and trying to use wrong Windows 7 drivers.

You stated after one boot it was all messed up, and I have seen before if an INSTALLATION asks to reboot and you tell it to reboot later and keep installing other programs etc, upon the reboot that was needed the system boots with errors and problems etc.

My build process for systems is generally installation via Disc to the hard drive. Activate with Microsoft. Install all drivers that were not loaded by default such as audio, network adapters, video card, etc with a reboot after each driver installation. Then perform all security updates/service packs to the OS if it was built using a non-slipstream. Then install optional software and perform a reboot after each installation. Then configure the GUI etc. And finally make a system recovery disc for this system and if its a tower place it in a jewel case and rest it on the bottom of the inside enclosure so its there if ever needed in the future. If its a laptop I will create the system recovery image and save it some place that it will not get lost or damaged to make the next time it is rebuilt a breeze vs the clean installation process which takes more time and sometimes research to find the drivers needed.

As for the lack of drivers for anything but Windows 8 64bit from Compaq, if you cant acquire the chipset details off of compaq's website for all chips requiring drivers ert ( sometimes this information is listed in locations such as the wrong drivers listing as to specifics of what the drivers are for as I did for the Realtek HD Drivers page I linked below.)

Or if the information is still unknown, I'd boot this system off of a Live Linux CD or DVD Disc and take note of what hardware is detected and specifics such as Realtek HD Audio 2330* chipset etc. Then get the Windows 7 driver for that chipset from Realtek support page etc. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ * 2330 is not your chipset, just an example.

You have to do this for all drivers needed to get them not from compaq, but instead from the chip makers support pages.

Solve : Windows Vista??

Answer»

Hey I had a question I thought I'd ask some of the experts around here. My friend is ordering a new Dell that will come with Windows XP. However she has heard that Windows Vista is coming out in February? or some time in the near future. She wants to know whether to stick with XP or wait around for Vista to come by.

I think she's kind of a mix of creativity and work. So along with her personality and my Windows experience, I would support XP all the way. I myself don't trust the stability and the amount of resources required from Vista to recommend it. However, after researching some, I'm still not POSITIVE. I figured someone around here knows more about Vista and can give a good recommendation. I personally enjoy the eye candy on Vista, but not what it takes to run it.

I run linux now (suse) and I believe Xgl with Compiz is just phenominally gorgeous (The cube thing is just too trippy). I don't know...that's just me.

Any thoughts?

I saw a post it said without a GIG of ram dont bother with vista...

windows was giving away previews "time release software" only good until june like a shareware OS...

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/windows-vista/early-adopter-download-of-the-day--windows-vista-rc2-205995.php

not sure if there still giving the keys

I have a key and I'm authorized to put it on 10 computers so check and download if you need I will give the key to you unless someone has a problem with that....I'm not trying to PIRATE software as I said I'm authorized to put it on 10 comps.. I know someone will correct me if this is a no no...

I dont see myself using it although I downloaded the 2.4 gig iso I never even burned it yet...Ok the link isnt much help anymore i guess.. and all I saw was RC1 not RC2 maybe your out of luck... I made a post when RC2 was released to let everyone know....RC2 is no longer available for download from the legit source.

Some dealers/stores are giving out VISTA coupons so you can get a discounted price on it when it comes out with a computer purchase now. That way you can go EITHER way.

I will never go down the Vista road for a variety of reasons. I don't need a whiz bang machine or a gig of RAM to do what I do. (ACTUALLY I don't need Windows at all to do what I do, but that's just me.)I agree if I was going to dedicate my system resorces to eyecandy I would go for XGL

Solve : Google Chrome?

It keeps crashing! Why???More info needed.

1.) When does it crash?
2.) What error message(s)?
3.) What OS are you running Vista or 7 and which version?
4.) Have you tried connecting to this same site that crashes using IE, and if so any problems?
5.) Which version of Chrome are you using?Every day. I am using Windows 7. Something pops up that has 2 lines. One says do you want to CLOSE down, The other says it is working to help. It often has a SMALL blue spinner. I have never tried going to IEWell, try IE. Does it work?

When Chrome crashes, does this happen with certain websites? Exactly what does the error message say? A box shows up with 2 lines. 1st line says it is working to fix it. 2nd line says - close it down.Quote from: soybean on February 28, 2013, 09:26:01 AM

Solve : missing Excel files?

Answer»

I emailed an Excel 2000 spreadsheet file as an attachment from an old computer to this one which has Windows 7 and Excel 2008. I downloaded the Excel file and did some editing to it on this PC using the NEWER Excel and then saving it. However, days LATER after rebooting the pc, I could not find the file despite using various search mechanisms. So I went through the downloading process again. When I tried to SAVE the file a message said that the file already exists. So I am told the file I could not find exists! How do I find it?I have now found the file in Downloads while the other Excel files are in Documents. When I click on Open, only the Excel files in Documents are LISTED. when I click on Recent all the Excel files I have used recently are listed so I can click on what was the missing file to open it. Problem solved.

Solve : New Windows Vista licensing question?

Answer» ANYONE hear about the new WINDOWS Vista licensing? How do they know if your COMPUTER is a new one or not? I reformat every now and again, am I to understand that everytime i reformat i will need to buy another copy?As it's not a real product yet, we don't know, but you can GOOGLE "vista licensing" and have a read here:

http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=36820

This guy seems to think it's OK:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_licensing.asp

Why anyone wants to go down this road with Microsoft is beyond me. Hmmm... This is what i read

http://www.megagames.com/news/html/software/vistacontroversysparkedagain.shtmlAgain, I am waiting for one legitimate reason why people need to "upgrade" to Vista at all.

"Because you can" doesn't seem adequate and any amount of eye candy is meaningless. I understand it will be on new machines sold and you will not have a choice in that regard.

Solve : Wireless adapter keeps turning off/losing connection?

Answer»

Computer: ASUS N53SV series laptop
OS: Windows 7 Home PREMIUM(legal)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM
CPU @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz
RAM: 4.00 GB
System type: 64-bit operating system

Network Adapters (from device manager):
1. Atheros AR900WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter
2. Bluetooth Device(Personal Area Network)
3. Bluetooth Device(RFOMM Protocol TDI)
4. MICROSOFT Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter
5.Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller #2

Problem: I am using my wireless and this probably has occurred for a long time, but I am fed up with it now. My wireless randomly loses connection to all available wirelesses(sows the wireless on lower left with a yellow symbol next to it) or it randomly turns off (shows the wireless sign on the lower left with a red x).

There is a 1/2 1/2 chance for either of these to happen so it doesn't really favor one over the other. ALSO the time period seems pretty strange as well sometimes it doesn't see to have a pattern: sometimes it doesn't happen for a week then it may happen 10 times a day.

I am able to fix this by two methods. The first works most of the time which is where i simply right click my wireless icon and trouble shoot it, where it then reboots and it works. This happens works like 70% of the time, the other 30% i just have to shut my laptop to sleep and then when I turn my laptop back on and everything loads up my wireless is fine.

How do I fix this?

edit: when my wireless icon goes from having wireless to it have the yellow * I think it is like a 100% chance the trouble shooting will fix itTry removing the Microsoft one and re-booting...

Solve : Please tell Unnecessary Folders/ Files in C: Drive?

Answer»

Operating SYSTEM: Windows 7
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
RAM: 1.00 GB
32-bit OS
Antivirus Program: MSE

Hello Friends,
Please list some unnecessary folders in C: Drive, particularly in Windows Folder.
There is very less space remaining in C: Drive.

Thanks in ADVANCE!Deleting folders will not give you the space you want.

1) How large is the drive and how much free space is on c: drive?

2) Is c: the only partition? If not, how many PARTITIONS are there and how much free space is on them?

3) You will gain a huge amount of space by disabling System RESTORE. If you decide to do this, you should start using disc imaging software on a regular basis.

4) You can also limit the space used by the Temporary Internet Files Folder in Internet Options

5) Empty your Temp folder and the recycle bin

6) If you have more than one drive or partition you can use the My Documents folder to another location

7) And of COURSE you can get a larger drive

Solve : Windows XP will have DirectX 10!?

Answer»

Windows XP will be getting DX10, or what it will be called in XP - DX9.0L, WICH is a renamed and refurbished DX10.

This is DX10 with at least most of the features that DX10 on Vista will have, but SINCE its a software rendition, it will take more out of ur PC. :-/

So DX10 for vista will give u more performance, but it will cost 250$ to upgrade to Vista. In any case, this is a great thing for XP users!

Only draw back is the mainstream DX10 cards will be READY in late spring at the very best, so anyone who wants to enjoy DX10.. or DX9.0L will have to spend 500$+ on one of the upcoming high-end DX10 graphics cards, wether it be the R600 or G80 based cards. But for some of us, thats not a problem.

Solve : Software to repair weak sectors?

Answer»

Does anyone know of software that will repair weak SECTORS on a hard drive. No such thing as a "weak" sector " that i know of...either bad ...or good.
Bad sectors cannot be REPAIRED....disk apps mark them so they are no longer used.Yes and No.
This is the year 2013.
Your question is 1995.
In windows 95 there was a built-in program to do that.
Are you running windows 95 or 98?

How do I run Microsoft ScanDisk?
Microsoft Windows 95/98 users. To run scandisk from Windows 95 and 98 follow the below steps. Click Start; Click Run and type scandisk in the run box; Click ok;
... from CH archives.
Modern HDD s do this automatically. You want to go to the website of the hd manufacturer and download and run their diagnostic utility. As patio MENTIONED, the utility will identify bad sectors, attempt to move DATA from those sectors to a good location on the disc, and then mark those sectors so they are not reused.

Solve : Transfer a file from one computer to another?

Answer»

Must admit that l have posted this in another forum which had 481 hits and zero replies!
So, transferring files between different computers
I have a film (4gb and yes, NO copyright involved) that l want to send to someone. The first thing l did was to winrar it into three different formats (ie the complete film, the film in 200mb chunks, and the film in 400mb chunks).
My upload speed is next to useless so FileZilla was my first choice of uploading to my server (rapidgator) Whatever format l chose to upload, it said that it would take at least 70hrs to upload it. It was like watching paint dry, and then all of a sudden, the connection was lost and it started all over again!
Although l can contact this person, l have no idea of what system he has, but could find out if necessary.
So then l thought, what if he can look at a certain drive on my computer and then just drag and drop the files into his?
My first thought was SKYDRIVE but this seems next to useless as it doesn't even start to upload anything whatsoever.
Usergroups? Don't even want to GET into that scenario as it means changing my Windows settings.
All l need is a one off free program, easy to use, so he can access one of my DRIVES, and drag the files over to his computer. When done, the program can then be removed and both our systems are back to normal.
Any suggestions? No reason to allow access to your PC at all...use a file storage service...there are a few up to 10G that are Free...
Problem with connecting it's not gonna be any quicker than if you upload it to file storage and he grabs it at his liesure...
Or just mail him the DVD...

Solve : Problems with Windows 7 backup?

Answer»

Hi all,
I have the FOLLOWING setup with my drives.
OS and programs - C:\ 240GB SSD
Games - D:\ 2x 500GB HDD in RAID 0
Backups - Z:\ 2TB HDD
As you can tell, this is a gaming machine that I've made.

The idea is that windows backup makes an image of both C and D drives, especially important with the RAID 0.
The PROBLEM is that it fails every time. It runs for a little while then just gives up. I've attached a screen shot of the error and it's code. I've tried a google search on the error code and couldn't really make sense of it.
Can someone give me a hand with this, please?
Thanks a lot,
Luke

[recovering disk space, attachment DELETED by admin]Some people have got that message if they are running antivirus REALTIME protection. If you are running any, as an experiment try stopping it and see if the backup now works. If so, you probably have some malware files on your system, possibly cached, which are getting picked up by the realtime protection as they are being copied, halting the volume shadow copy.

I've disabled and uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials as I have Malware Bytes installed already, which I have cleared the quarantine folder, and temporarily disabled.
We'll see how it goes OK. It just failed again. I sat staring at it for over 40 minutes to see if I can see what it is failing on, but at the last second it shoots off with loads of directories on screen, then fails.
It seems as though removing Security Essentials didn't help. I've CHANGED the files that it needs to backup, removing the vast majority of Program Files from that checklist, and also gone into 'Services' and forced 'Shadow Copy Service' to start.
Now, we shall see if that helps at all..
*Fingers crossed*It is apparent that what you want is not what you get.
Did you already search Microsoft support? The backup software of windows does not correctly backup RAID drive. Nor can it restore it properly. This is mentioned in the Microsoft forums and other places.
Here is a post that mentions the issue.
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/92cc38a7-88f5-4b79-8ae0-8d209b4eae86/whs-backup-requirements
Quote

...Unfortunately, backing up an arbitrarily large collection of data is a very difficult problem to solve at a price point that consumers will accept. Best practice is probably to maintain several (3+) sets of drives which offer as much storage as your main array....
You need to limit the total data in one backup.
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/8a89beaf-fd8d-4ac6-a170-c925e36d6299/raid-5-2tb-limit-with-whs2011
Backup of the full array in one hunk is not piratical.
Does that help any? There seem to be 2 main culprits: antivirus, and the presence of reparse points.

Solve : Blank screen for 30 seconds before Windows boots?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm having a strange problem; after going through the BIOS, my computer shows a blank screen for 30 seconds before the Windows loading screen appears.

It's custom built with the following components:

Shuttle XPC SN95G5 barebone
AMD 3500+ processor
2gb OCZ RAM
GeForce 6200 256mb gfx

Up until now I had assumed it was a problem with the graphics card. But I replaced my old graphics card yesterday, and the problem is still occuring. So it's not the graphics card...

Furthermore, as far as I noticed it doesn't seem to happen when I have Vista RC1/RC2 installed. Does this point to it being a problem with my copy of XP?

Thanks in advance for any ADVICE,

Michael
Set back whatever you changed in the BIOS.Sorry, I meant after it gets past the BIOS STUFF when it checks the RAM and stuff. I haven't changed anything in the BIOS...Ah, you mean the POST.

Have you tried setting your BIOS to the default values?

What mainboard do you have and what are your system specifications? Any problems in Windows? Thanks for the reply. Yes I did mean the POST!

- Resetting BIOS to default settings doesn't help
- Motherboard is a FN95 (Shuttle XPC proprietary) other specs as in 1st post...anything else you want?
- No problems other problems in WIN XP.

The really interesting thing is that it doesn't happen every time my computer boots. The majority of boots. More specifically it seems to happen when I boot it up from off, but not if I do a restart from Windows.

It really does sound like a software problem, but I've installed the same copy of XP (corporate edition) on multiple other computers none of which have had similar problems.

Like I said, a very strange problem . I'm completely at a loss...Quote

Yeah I've gotta say I've definitely considered that as an explnation. But I've never heard of anything like that before. Thus I was hoping for opinions of others...Is this a fresh INSTALL of XP?Quote
Is this a fresh install of XP?

I fresh install frequently and it happens on every install.Does it happen in safe mode?Actually it seems to have stopped happening, and I think as a result of resetting the BIOS to 'optimized defaults'. A strange problem, but I think that has fixed it!

Thanks for all your help!!Sometimes we are just that good. I see this happening for certain mobos (often older Dell desktops) that are trying to boot from an inappropriate source. Many of my clients get this problem when they install a new HP printer. The camera card slots on the printer confuse the boot-up process, and the computer is waiting for media to be loaded into the printer/card slots.

Adjusting/updating the BIOS usually fixes it, but not always. I've got one or two clients with old PowerSpec towers that won't boot up at all until you disconnect the printer.

This may also happen because of connected flash drives and removable media drives. During your 30-second delay, try disconnecting devices one at a time, noticing if the boot process suddenly breaks free.

Solve : Preparation for new Windows 7 Professional Machine?

Answer»

Hi

I have just ordered the first new PC I have had for six years. It will be the first I have used with Windows 7 as the operating system (I'm CURRENTLY an XP user). Can anyone link to a page that suggests any initial steps I should take to fully secure this new machine? Having had an autorun problem in the PAST, I would like to know if I need to manually disable that on the new laptop. I intend to connect a couple of external USB hard drives and don't want them compromised.

Thanks...1.HTTP://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902 for auto run locations and removal ( if i understood you right) 2. I'm sure there more you can do but these are a good start. Will I need to install Panda USB vaccine and disable Messenger on a Windows 7 Professional machine ? Are there any better autorun-stoppers than Panda now ? It says its NTFS PROTECTION is only in Beta.http://www.copynotify.com/USBSecurityNoAutorun.html?gclid=CJ-o_smbzLUCFYx_QgodWSUAJg or http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144204%28v=vs.85%29.aspx you can also change permissions on ntfs formatted usb driveshttp://www.technibble.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6736 so other computers have read only privilege apparently . Now this is just for informational purposes as ive never done or attempted these approaches. Just wanted to share my research with you. if VIRUSES are the concern why don't you post this in the malware forum? All i can do is research and share what i find as i am new and don't have a proven fix for you. this response should keep this thread open so others can view. GL!!!

Solve : vista and dual core cpus?

Answer»

ok will WINDOWS VISTA(and its programs) be ABLE to use dual core cpus to the fullest or will it still be better to get a SINGLE core cpuWell, doesn't Win XP support dual core CPUs? http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlights/multicore.mspx makes me think it does. So, clearly, Vista will support them. Windows Vista is supposed to be written to take better advantage of dual core CPUs than XP
As for programs, many are available now that run on XP which can use dual core processors, it's a case of when the programmers get round to it and if the application will benefit from multiple threads
I would say get whatever CPU seems to be the vest value for money at the time, and remember that running 2+ applications at once will benefit from dual-core toothnx for the info guysAll this need to jump on the latest bandwagon. Everyone rushing out to get dual core processors so they will be up to speed for Vista.

Not many games at the moment are written for dual core
I suppose more will take advantage of multiple cores in the future, I can see performance increases from it
However at the moment there are pratically no multi-threaded games available, so a dual-core won't REALLY improve performance, but then again there seem to be more dual than single core CPUs availabe now for reasonable prices, so if you think you might make use of the extra core then I'd say go for it

Solve : Problems with print spooler service?

Answer»

Hello everyone,,
So when I try to INSTALL a printer driver to my notebook, I had this problem where it said that:
"Processing cannot be continued because the print spooler service has been STOPPED. Restart the computer to start the print spooler service and then start again."
I've tried to solve this by starting it through "services.msc" but when i click 'start' in the print spooler properties, this message POP up:
"Windows could not start the print spooler service on local computer.
Error 193: 0xc1"
Can you HELP me???

Solve : Save Installer Folders?

Answer»

So I'm looking at what's taking up space on my HD, and I have about 8GB in C:\Windows\Installer.

Most of the folders are what named after what seems to be a combination of the registry location, my 1988 Chevy Beretta's VIN, and a certificate generated by the LEKTOR machine. (eg, {7FXDABCC-1U1E-4D61-907D-BA2195175774} )

Do I NEED these? Does Windows continue to need the installer files, or is that just something that bloats and never erases?

ThanksIf all installed apps are running fine they are not needed. As far as I know they are.

If something goes pear-shaped, I always have backups.

(And if EVERYTHING goes au pair shaped, who cares about the *censored* laptop, anyway?

Thanks for the help.

Solve : Blowing Things Up (That Is, Making Things Larger)?

Answer»

I have a spreadsheet I'd like to turn into a poster - I'd like it spread across (that is, tiled) two A3 sheets wide and two A# sheets tall. It's currently formatted for one A4 sheet.

What I've been doing is - Save As. CONVERT text from 9 pt to 20 point. Setting 'Fit to 2 by 2' and then dragging the COLUMNS and rows until it fits.

I tried saving as PDF and printing 'Auto-Size', but that only blows it up as big as ONE A3...

Any tips/tricks to doing this?

(I threw this in Windows because I didn't think it was ultimately an Excel-specific question).

THANKS[bump]Does your version of Microsoft Office include Publisher? If so, I suggest you explore use of Publisher to accomplish what you want. Publisher is designed for such tasks as posters. I believe Excel workbooks or parts of workbooks can be imported into Publisher. References:

No, but I think the office 2013 I just got on my laptop does. So as long as I can save as PDF, I could email it back and FORTH... Will GIVE. That a try. Thanks!

Solve : MY COMPUTER Start hanging?

Answer»

hello everyone. my pc start hanging i dont know why? plz help i am not master in pc. i use win 7 32-bit and no antivirus i yet installed. i reinstalled win last week
More info WOULD be helpful:

Computer make/model
How much Memory it has

*Was this problem present prior to the reinstall? Were there any hardware CHANGES to this system that lead to the current problem? Was the reinstall because the prior build was infected with malware or a virus? Did you perform a full reinstall deleting all data from the drive or a reinstall that SAVES all your important data also known as a system recovery repair installation?

Why not run an antivirus?, there are good free ones available. I use Microsoft Security Essentials as my free antivirus.
DaveLembke,, thanks for help

computer model: G31T-M7, ram 1 gb, hard disk 500 Gb.yes, problem present prior to the reinstall.
i dont about any hardware changes to lead that problem.
yes, i reinstalled bcoz pc hanged to much may be due to virus bcoz my friend used
his pen drive on my pc without scaning..
full reinstall or not i dont know how to do that,i describe u what i did.
i just put win 7 cd in cpu and follow step without TAKING any back up.
i was also used microsoft security essential but due to window genuine problem, it expired.
today a msg on appear screen when i start pc ((((Problem Event Name:BlueScreen)))
what is this and what it mean?
The fact that you are not using an anti virus app and have symptoms that appear to be viral should be indication enough that you need to format, reinstall a genuine version of Windows from a retail Windows CD, and IMMEDIATELY install an anti virus application.

Solve : I have a problem please help me?

Answer»

After I installed some updates on my computer some of my games aren't working properly and on my friend's computer they work just fine, please help me.
(sorry for not uploading the image in a more convenient way.....not so sure ho to do so)
http://postimage.org/image/w00wszgnp/We need more information from you.

What OS and SP are you running? Which games - is it all of them? Some titles would be nice.
Is it a laptop or a desktop? What's the make and model - or is it custom built?
What changed since it did work(software changes or hardware changes)?I'm using 64-bit OS, I'm not so sure what SP stands for.
It happens only for games connected to the and that sometimes needed to be patched. Ragnarok online and Ragnarok Online 2.
It is a laptop (both computers if you ask)
The make ant the model are Dell Inspiron N5010.
I did a few updates before it happened I will list them here:
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)
Microsoft - Keyboard - Microsoft Hardware USB Keyboard
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - February 2013 (KB890830)
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.143.2586.0)

Forgot another thing , after the update I had problems with my mshtml.dll FILE in OS(C:)/Windows/SysWOW64 so I replaced it.I have this file not so sure if it will help(couldn't attach it so I copied and pasted what's written in the file)

I was trying to change my authui.dll file to edit my logon screen, but something went WRONG and my logon screen is now missing, sending me to a black screen, it is impossible to get on to my computer. What should I do? The original authui.dll files are still on my computer, I copied them just incase I wanted to change my edits back, but I can't reach them as my computer can't GO past the logon screen.Boot to safemode...open a command prompt from Start/Accessories...type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.Quote from: patio on February 22, 2013, 03:14:43 PM

Solve : Win 7 install key?

Answer»

So I got tired of dealing with my old computer and a friend of mine had a used computer from his job they were getting rid of. It's a Dell Optiplex 7010 and it didn't have anything wrong with it with the exception of Windows 10 and I'm not ready for Windows 10. I upgraded the BOOT Drive to a 500 GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD and PUT in 16 gigs of G skill 1600 memory along with my 4 terabyte HARD drive for storage. I installed Windows 7 Professional as per the label that was on the computer itself and tried using the 25 character key from that label but it won't work so I was wondering if I'm supposed to use a specific build of Windows 7 Professional or does it have to be one that's downloaded specifically from Microsoft. I was under the assumption I could throw any Windows 7 Pro on there and be able to use the CD key from the label. Any help would be appreciated in figuring this out OTHERWISE I'd have to call Dell and BUY their restore flash drive and I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Thanks A Bunch
JohnHi John,
I suspect that your friend took advantage of the free upgrade to Win 10 from Win 7. If this is the case then by accepting the free upgrade this rendered the Win 7 Product Key unusable.
You can download for free the original version of Windows 7 from here.

https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-si/sln299044/how-to-download-and-use-the-dell-os-recovery-image-in-microsoft-windows?lang=en

It will make a recovery pen drive with the version of windows the computer was supplied with.He will still need a valid key...I'll give it a shot and see if it works. If anyone else knows of something different I'm all ears.

Thanks again for your help, John

Try it in Classic mode...all the other eye-candy will probably grind that laptop to a schreeching halt...Bumping an old thread here, but I've been away awhile...

To quote the first post in this thread: "It only lasts until June." Which prompts the question, to me at least, what happens then?1 It stops working.
2 you can RECOVER data if your HD into another computer.
3 You may not be able to upgrade to full vista version meaning you may have to do a clean install even if you but Vista

I imagine that they will make a way to upgrade from RC1 to the full version but at this point they offer NO guarantees except you may have to reformat your HDQuote

Did Microsoft properly prepare for the "Hasta la Vista" jokes?

So it seems that Microsoft Vista has kept the Blue Screen of Death "feature"; great.

Nice to know they still need that feature.

Hope the new BSOD uses a lot of eye candy.

Solve : Installing Vista?

Ok, so I really screwed up my computer with XP, so I DECIDED to nuke my hard drive and install vista beta 2 on it....I have a DVD with the ISO file on it, but I cant boot off it. The computer says it doesn't detect a boot media...I've done the bios stuff and I know that my dvd drive works. Has anybody else had a similar problem? You have to burn the ISO file to a disc with Nero or some equivalent program. You can't just COPY it off and expect it to run.

Solve : Drop box changing content of shared files?

Answer»

Hie
I am a windows 7 user . Recently i have noticed that whenever i share files or FOLDERS with my workmates or they share files and folders with me, Drop box renames those files and alters the CONTENT of the files. I would like drop box to RETAIN ORIGINAL documents as they are and sync them correctly without changing the file name or altering the content of these files. How do i do that?
Are you sure it is not your workmates renaming and altering content ??Oh no i doubt that very much, its just the drop box not keeping the original formatI use dropbox regularly and the only time files have been ALTERED is when someone has altered them.

Solve : Delayed audio?

Answer»

Noob here, I've checked FAQs and search but no luck finding an answer, so here goes.

My problem started about a week ago, I've tried the usual scans and updates but I'm not getting anywhere. The problem began out of the blue, I'm not aware of of any changes I made to cause this (but it still could be my fault).

When I watch videos be it YouTube, BBC iplayer, etc, there is no sound until around one minute into the video. At this point the sound comes on (in sync) and I can start the video again and the sound works as it should right from the start.
System sounds are also delayed, email notifications etc, pretty much all sound really. Although sometimes the sounds are as they should be, the problem happens often enough for me to come here seeking help.
Someone suggested codecs to me (I'm not sure what this does) but I installed 'K-lite codec pack 995 mega', which didn't change anything.

I use Chrome and I've checked it's updated, as is everything else on my computer. I've disabled my chrome extensions but it makes no difference. I've uninstalled then re-installed Chrome, still the problem persists. Chrome has occasionally frozen since I've had the sound problem.

I use AVAST free version, Spybot home edition, Spywareblaster and Malwarebytes, again all kept up to date and regularly used to scan my system. None of these programs are reporting anything 'nasty' in the system.

So I came here in the hope that someone might know how to restore normality to my computer sound.
If I need to provide any more information for you please ask.
Computers are like cars to me, I can drive them but don't know how they work. Please post the computer model next time. Codecs are not related to online videos as they are relatively dependent on flash player plugins. Try reinstalling your sound driver from the manufacturing support site. Try closing out any programs that could be simultaneously running when this issue happens. See also your OS has received all current windows updates. Remove Spybot completely from your system as it is not recommended nowadays. Spywareblaster would suffice as additional browsing protection software.Quote from: jason2074 on August 05, 2013, 06:36:52 PM

The computer model is listed in my 'computer SPECS' on the left hand side, an HP p6675uk.
I should have said I re-installed the sound driver already.
Windows updates are always, err, up to date.
I don't have any programs running in the background, apart from the ones which have always been running before and after this issue arose. I have tried disabling background stuff but the problem persists.
When did Spybot become a bad thing? ('bad' is my word but you imply it's not 'good') I've had it on my computers for over ten years and I've never before read a word against it, quite the contrary.
If Skype is good or bad is not the question.
Rather, if Skype is completely removed, does the problem go away?

If it helps, I've also been using Spybot for a long time and never had it cause a problem. I'll follow along to see why it's apparently no longer recommended, definitely news to me.

I'm assuming you mean Spybot as Skype hasn't come into this at all... Well, I just removed Spybot and restarted my computer. After initially forgetting my password I was able to open Chrome and start loading videos with no loss of sound!

I'm hopeful that the problem I was having is now history, but I'm still surprised that Spybot would be causing the issue. Never before have I ever had Spybot give me grief, it's very disappointing to learn this. I'll be emailing them to explain what happened, maybe it's a glitch in their latest version because this has never happened before.

Thanks for the advice jason2074 I don't see how this could have anything to do with chrome or spybot.
It could be that a windows update updated your soundcard driver with a bad one. Go to the manufactures website and install the sound DRIVERS there.
If you're running windows 7 (or Vista?) click your start button and type 'view reliability history' in the search box. Look at the logs around the time your sound started giving you problems and see what may have been the culprit.
To rule out a hardware issue, i'd load a live linux cd and see if your sound is still messed up. Also if you have a system restore, you can try rolling back to a time when it worked. Since one of Spybot's functions is blocking files from executing i don't understand why you can't see that it may in fact be the culprit here...
windows Update is not the issue. All I can tell you guys is that once I removed Spybot from my computer all the problems I was having stopped.
I'm now in discussion with safer networking to see if they can explain why this happened. If they can explain to me what went wrong and how to avoid a repeat of those issues I'd be happy to use Spybot again. After all, it ran on my computers just fine for many years and appeared to be very SUCCESSFUL at finding 'nasties'. I have also championed it to many friends over the years but now I feel I should call on these friends to see if they too are having similar issues.

Solve : Who uses Vista Beta?

Answer» I want to know who uses Vista Beta or Tried to use it and it didnt work.. and what kind of problems did you meet on the way?The poll is flawed. Wouldn't it be much better for you to ask do you use Vista Beta, yes or no? Individually, how are we supposed to know how many others use it? And what if we all vote in contradictory ways. Plus, there are only a couple of dozen or so active regular users, never mind 1000.

And what if 241 people used it, what then?

I SEARCHED on google for some and I think the more threatening were winstall.exe, winupdates.exe, runserv32.exe... but I as I said... that's google point of view. The winupdates.exe process belongs to a dangerous worm (which is like a computer virus). The info on it and how to remove it are here:

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-062711-2417-99&tabid=3

Or here:

The winupdates.exe is a less-dangerous spyware process:

You can remove it with a program like SpyBot Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware.

You might have other UNDETECTED viruses, TROJAN Horses, or worms, so you should purchase a good antivirus program, update it and run a full system scan, or use your WINDOWS CD to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS. If you don't have the cash to buy an antivirus program, try a free one:
