Solve : Hard Drive Error? |
Answer» Greetings to the Group - I RECENTLY had another hard drive added internally and I'm getting this constant error " the following hard disks are reporting failure. Disk Name SAMSUNG HD502HJ ATA Device". The disk is empty but I formatted it and ran check disk and everything is fine. I copied a test file, video file, and the drive is fine, the file is there and plays normal. There is absolutely nothing odd with the drive in copying to and from it, or reading files. The tech did unplug the case fan because he needed that plug for the hard drive. Therefore the fan is not used. I don't need the fan as this pc is in a constant air conditioned room as we live in the Philippines and the pc doesn't get warm at all. So what is the problem with it as I get this error constantly and when I just cancel it, it comes back shortly. The error offers to back up what's on the drive, but there isn't anything anyway. I wonder if the problem might be something to do with the wiring harness or the plug that was used for the hard drive. The system is a new W7 Basic pc with a couple of other hard drives, see attached. Ribbon cables cant go in the wrong way...that's why they are keyed on top.Yes they can. Some techs put the slave into the motherboard. That is wrong.Quote from: Geek-9pm Is this a PATA drive? Highlight SAMSUNG HD502HJ in first post - copy to clipboard - Google - paste - notice top result "Samsung HD502HJ 500 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive" (5 seconds approx) Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 28, 2013, 08:31:41 PM Yes they can. Some techs put the slave into the motherboard. That is wrong. This is a SATA drive. Anyhow, as far as I know, with an 80 WIRE (modern) IDE cable, the motherboard/slave/master connector designations only mean anything if the drives are jumpered for Cable Select. If the drives are jumpered for master & slave it does not matter at all which connectors you use. With the older 40 wire cables, it never mattered. Quote from: Salmon Trout on March 03, 2013, 06:40:56 AM If the drives are jumpered for master & slave it does not matter at all which connectors you use. Now I am wondering if that is right...MB=========================slave======master. As you said this may be a carryover from the 40 conductor leads but it is the proper connection layout.I would sudjest a thourough checkup on the autencity of the HDD, make sure that the jumpers are not set wrongly, also I would advice on a change of HDD, or make good sure not to place into it any valuable document.Problem solved! I ran SeaTools by Seagate and the hd failed one of the tests, so it went back to be replaced. Thanks for all of your input here. Jim |

Solve : Problems in IE/Firefox? |
Answer» COULD ANYONE tell me what is happening here:- This is my NTL home page in Firefox...this also happens in IE Some pages do load correctly but others don't. I have checked through both browser option, cleared cache etc, and have done a "repair" windows But the problem still persists. It's like HTML has been switched off. The webpage components do not display correctly and also seem to cascade down from top to bottom in-line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wizz I sometimes have the same sort of problem with many different sites. Happens with MSN/Live, ATI/AMD support pages, Microsoft, Windizupdate, and probably some more. It happens intermittently, and for apparently no reason, unless this counts - I notice that most of the time when this happens, my wireless connection icon says that it is connected with excellent signal strength, but says nothing about the speed, this also happens in network connection properties (left click icon in system tray). The problem never happens when the speed is reported, but it sometimes doesn't happen when it isn't shown, if that makes sense. Some other applications fail to connect entirely when this happens, such as Spybot:S&D, Spyware Blaster and Antivir. Also, sometimes IE will connect to the page but will refresh it several times, then display an "unable to connect" page. The network troubleshooter it directs me to reports no problems. Apologis for the thread hijacking, but I just thought I'd let you know that there are other people with the same problem - I haven't made my own thread because this hardly ever happens with me, so it doesn't bother me so much, but if anyone finds a solution I'd be interested, I'll keep checking this thread. Plus I hope that someone can help wizz, I'm just sorry I couldn'tThis is caused by a failure to load or use the cascading stylesheets for the page in question. What Firefox extensions are you using? Some can disable or modify CSS. Alternatively some other internet SECURITY program may be blocking .css pages for some inexplicable reason.Quote This is caused by a failure to load or use the cascading stylesheets for the page in question. What Firefox extensions are you using? Some can disable or modify CSS. Alternatively some other internet security program may be blocking .css pages for some inexplicable reason.Flashgot, IE View, Google Web Accelerator, and ForcastFox. Please bear in mind that I have been using these extensions for some time..with no trouble. Please also bear in mind that this problem is duplicated in the IE browser too. This does not happen to all pages, but it is random. My NTL home page always has this problem..sometime the linked pages will display correctly, sometimes they wont. I'm seriously considering wiping my disk and starting again. That might not be a bad idea; but why not try temporarily disabling your internet security software/firewall and reloading the rogue page. Let us know if it makes any difference.Quote That might not be a bad idea; but why not try temporarily disabling your internet security software/firewall and reloading the rogue page. Let us know if it makes any difference.Oops....Sorry just a tad too late. Just started installing Vista RC1 (God help me!) But thanks anyway Eek!Did you not qualify for RC2 or not grab it in time ? ? That build is gonna be challenging to say the least...Quote Did you not qualify for RC2 or not grab it in time ? ?Just finished installing it ! Only the SOUND to sort out At least IE and Firefox work OK now !! |

Solve : Windows Vista, Yes or No?? |
Answer» This Is basically just an add on to the previous topic I had semi about Vista, But I thought It would be better to make A new thread and see where it went. Also, I want to know what people think. Unless you have a space age dual core 10grand computer I suggest that you throw the Vista CD in Bills face and say "Make it again." That man creates crap and crap only. The Vista Beta version doesn't even work on my friends brand new computer, he spent over $5000 AUD and is still upgrading. He installed it and it was so god *censored* SLOW it was ridiculous, if you want a cool looking graphical interface then get Linux or buy a friggin Mac. There's no point buying Vista, or even downloading it, it's rather ghey. It's just like that STUPID 360 box, my friend (same one) bought one and egged me on to get one, I said I'll wait for the next best thing, he installed some sort of FIRMWARE on his and then had to do the whole updates with XBOX Live. Now he is unable to use his 360 for some reason along with 5% of other people who have the same CD/DVD drive and Microsoft are refusing to compensate him and are telling him there is nothing they can do about it, if that happened to myself, I'd buy a ticket to the U.S, knock on Bill's door and politely ask for a refund, and if not, the the politeness will turn into anger and the 360 would have an imprint of Bill's face on it. bah rambling// |

Solve : {Help Request} - Weird Desktop folder in downloads folder? |
Answer» Hi, so I have COME across some sort of problem on my laptop. As for porn sites, yeah sure, but only one I've been using for a very long time and have never had a issue with.. but if that was to download a virus surely AVG, or spybot, or Malware bytes would pick it up. Hard to say. The number of known infections is over 3 billion. I read that somewhere. Here are some things to test. Boot in safe mode. Also, try using another user account. You may have corruption of a user account. That may or may not be related to malware. Try that and see what you find. I think the folder is only in you main user account. If the account is corrupted, you can fix it readily.Try this link http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104440-favorites-restore-default-favorite-links-navigation-pane.htmlQuote from: jason2074 on August 13, 2013, 11:34:38 PM Try this link http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104440-favorites-restore-default-favorite-links-navigation-pane.htmlAfter deleting my desktop folder then going to that site, and downloading the new one from there, it actually worked, so thank you. Solve : Overclocking, Is it necessary?? |
Answer» Well I was looking around at the Microsoft site, and I was reading about Vista and its System Requirements.Quote A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least: Now Im Not Sure If my Computer Is DirectX 9 capable, But my question is there any WAY to upgrade my processor to 800mhz from 730mhz with out overclocking? Or should I just get a new tower anyways. Also, I don't know if this will come to surprise but you can download Betas of Vista off there site, thats why I sorta wanna do this That is the minimum. You will need much more than that to tolerate it. A newer system is recommended if you feel the need. No need to overclock that machine, even if it is possible. What do you specifically see as a reason to use Vista? I'm doing a study.Eye Candy , Also thats sorta want to try it to see If it is actually worth purchasing.A difference of 70MHz isn't going to make much difference in terms of being able to run Vista, but like said don't expect good performance.People are going to sucked in by the eye candy. I prefer functionality and efficiency.I guess you and I are the only holdouts 2K.I think a lot of people are going to be disapointed with Vista once they get over how "pretty" it looks. Its another move in the direction of MS having complete control of what can and cannot run on a machine.Quote I think a lot of people are going to be disapointed with Vista once they get over how "pretty" it looks. Good old Uncle Billy and his good old wind-ohs. Well One reason I wanted to test it was to see beyond the eye candy, and im not about to ditch my PIII yet besides like all microsoft products If you buy vista when it is AVAILABLE I can Guarantee It is going to be very Buggy. Solve : Hasta la Vista, baby.? |
Answer» I just tried out the Vista at a friend's house, it doesn't impress me a bit. To me it looks and feels like a The first time I saw XP witht he new default look, I thought THAT was done by a youngster. On the machines I have used XP on I quickly reverted to all classic settings and turned off all of the eye candy. You are so right. After I got in a habit of this 5 speed, an automatic would bore me to death. "On the machines I have used XP on I quickly reverted to all classic settings and turned off all of the eye candy. " I did the same thing, whst's wrong with the W2K's classic look? I still prefer Win2K over XP as well. It seems to me MS covers up all the holes in a wall with wallpaper instead of FIXING the real problem of the OS. I think they are doing the same thing with Vista. B.If Windows is so bad, don't use it I've been running Vista RC2 on my testbench machine for 5 weeks now... No COMMENT yet...Quote If Windows is so bad, don't use it I think you miss the point. A lot of people are still locked in by their mindset, or the apps they use or their kids, or whatever. That doesn't mean they have to like it. I find it amazing that it has evolved in size astronomically for hard drive, and other system requirements while offereing minimal, if any, improvements in performance of anything. Personally, I'm a Linux guy, but I would lose my favorite hobby if I gave up on Windows users. Neil, what will Vista allow you to do in February (or whenever) that you are not able to do right this minute? What enhancement "does it" for you? |

Solve : Boot problem, Windows 7 x64? |

Answer» Hello. Here's my situation: I bought a new laptop (Compaq CQ58-203SM, http://www.bcgroup-online.com/proizvodi/laptop-i-notebook-racunari/hp-Compaq-CQ58_203SM(C6J02EA)+2GB-Sodimm-18368/), downloaded Windows 7 x64 from a trusted web site (msdnaa), installed it, installed drivers* (chipset, ethernet and network adapter; audio driver was already installed), downloaded all programs, like antivirus (Avira), Google Chrome, etc., updated windows multiple times, but after one boot, it was all messed up: first, Windows loaded extremely slow, second, my network adapter and Avira, were uninstalled, which i noticed in Control Panel, as well as uninstalled Google Chrome, Foxit reader, etc., everything except Ethernet driver and Dropbox. The computer still boots very slowly, and it is dysfunctional. I hope I provided you with enough information. Thanks. |

Solve : missing Excel files? |
Answer» I emailed an Excel 2000 spreadsheet file as an attachment from an old computer to this one which has Windows 7 and Excel 2008. I downloaded the Excel file and did some editing to it on this PC using the NEWER Excel and then saving it. However, days LATER after rebooting the pc, I could not find the file despite using various search mechanisms. So I went through the downloading process again. When I tried to SAVE the file a message said that the file already exists. So I am told the file I could not find exists! How do I find it?I have now found the file in Downloads while the other Excel files are in Documents. When I click on Open, only the Excel files in Documents are LISTED. when I click on Recent all the Excel files I have used recently are listed so I can click on what was the missing file to open it. Problem solved. |

Solve : New Windows Vista licensing question? |
Answer» ANYONE hear about the new WINDOWS Vista licensing? How do they know if your COMPUTER is a new one or not? I reformat every now and again, am I to understand that everytime i reformat i will need to buy another copy?As it's not a real product yet, we don't know, but you can GOOGLE "vista licensing" and have a read here: http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=36820 This guy seems to think it's OK: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_licensing.asp Why anyone wants to go down this road with Microsoft is beyond me. Hmmm... This is what i read http://www.megagames.com/news/html/software/vistacontroversysparkedagain.shtmlAgain, I am waiting for one legitimate reason why people need to "upgrade" to Vista at all. "Because you can" doesn't seem adequate and any amount of eye candy is meaningless. I understand it will be on new machines sold and you will not have a choice in that regard. |

Solve : Problems with Windows 7 backup? |
Answer» Hi all, ...Unfortunately, backing up an arbitrarily large collection of data is a very difficult problem to solve at a price point that consumers will accept. Best practice is probably to maintain several (3+) sets of drives which offer as much storage as your main array....You need to limit the total data in one backup. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/8a89beaf-fd8d-4ac6-a170-c925e36d6299/raid-5-2tb-limit-with-whs2011 Backup of the full array in one hunk is not piratical. Does that help any? There seem to be 2 main culprits: antivirus, and the presence of reparse points. Solve : Blank screen for 30 seconds before Windows boots? |
Answer» Hi, It really does sound like a software problem, but I've installed the same copy of XP (corporate edition) on multiple other computers none of which have had similar problems. With Microsoft cracking down on pirated copies of XP, especially the heavily pirated corporate editions, perhaps it is their doing.Quote With Microsoft cracking down on pirated copies of XP, especially the heavily pirated corporate editions, perhaps it is their doing. Yeah I've gotta say I've definitely considered that as an explnation. But I've never heard of anything like that before. Thus I was hoping for opinions of others...Is this a fresh INSTALL of XP?Quote Is this a fresh install of XP? I fresh install frequently and it happens on every install.Does it happen in safe mode?Actually it seems to have stopped happening, and I think as a result of resetting the BIOS to 'optimized defaults'. A strange problem, but I think that has fixed it! Thanks for all your help!!Sometimes we are just that good. I see this happening for certain mobos (often older Dell desktops) that are trying to boot from an inappropriate source. Many of my clients get this problem when they install a new HP printer. The camera card slots on the printer confuse the boot-up process, and the computer is waiting for media to be loaded into the printer/card slots. Adjusting/updating the BIOS usually fixes it, but not always. I've got one or two clients with old PowerSpec towers that won't boot up at all until you disconnect the printer. This may also happen because of connected flash drives and removable media drives. During your 30-second delay, try disconnecting devices one at a time, noticing if the boot process suddenly breaks free. |

Solve : vista and dual core cpus? |
Answer» ok will WINDOWS VISTA(and its programs) be ABLE to use dual core cpus to the fullest or will it still be better to get a SINGLE core cpuWell, doesn't Win XP support dual core CPUs? http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlights/multicore.mspx makes me think it does. So, clearly, Vista will support them. Windows Vista is supposed to be written to take better advantage of dual core CPUs than XP thats the thing i am a gamer so thats why i was asking.. cuz im going to build a computer sometime and i wanted to know if it would be worth the extra money to get a dual core cpuNot many games at the moment are written for dual core I suppose more will take advantage of multiple cores in the future, I can see performance increases from it However at the moment there are pratically no multi-threaded games available, so a dual-core won't REALLY improve performance, but then again there seem to be more dual than single core CPUs availabe now for reasonable prices, so if you think you might make use of the extra core then I'd say go for it |

Solve : Win 7 install key? |
Answer» So I got tired of dealing with my old computer and a friend of mine had a used computer from his job they were getting rid of. It's a Dell Optiplex 7010 and it didn't have anything wrong with it with the exception of Windows 10 and I'm not ready for Windows 10. I upgraded the BOOT Drive to a 500 GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD and PUT in 16 gigs of G skill 1600 memory along with my 4 terabyte HARD drive for storage. I installed Windows 7 Professional as per the label that was on the computer itself and tried using the 25 character key from that label but it won't work so I was wondering if I'm supposed to use a specific build of Windows 7 Professional or does it have to be one that's downloaded specifically from Microsoft. I was under the assumption I could throw any Windows 7 Pro on there and be able to use the CD key from the label. Any help would be appreciated in figuring this out OTHERWISE I'd have to call Dell and BUY their restore flash drive and I'd rather not if I don't have to. |

Solve : Free windows Vista RC1? |
Answer» They started giving away keys again to Vista RC1 preview your allowed to put it on 10 computers but it only last until june be sure to read all the faq... You might not be ABLE to upgrade or downgrade after install... But if you dont mind starting over in 6 mths looks pretty good... Also those having problems with elegal copies... sign up and get your keys sent to you e-mail... Do you suppose it'll run on a 333mhz laptop with 128MB Ram? I can't really be bothered building a PC for Vista. Try it in Classic mode...all the other eye-candy will probably grind that laptop to a schreeching halt...Bumping an old thread here, but I've been away awhile... To quote the first post in this thread: "It only lasts until June." Which prompts the question, to me at least, what happens then?1 It stops working. 2 you can RECOVER data if your HD into another computer. 3 You may not be able to upgrade to full vista version meaning you may have to do a clean install even if you but Vista I imagine that they will make a way to upgrade from RC1 to the full version but at this point they offer NO guarantees except you may have to reformat your HDQuote Bumping an old thread here, but I've been away awhile... Did Microsoft properly prepare for the "Hasta la Vista" jokes? So it seems that Microsoft Vista has kept the Blue Screen of Death "feature"; great. Nice to know they still need that feature. Hope the new BSOD uses a lot of eye candy. "Hasta la Vista, baby" I think this would be a first for a "Sharware OS" |

Solve : Installing Vista? |
Answer» Ok, so I really screwed up my computer with XP, so I DECIDED to nuke my hard drive and install vista beta 2 on it....I have a DVD with the ISO file on it, but I cant boot off it. The computer says it doesn't detect a boot media...I've done the bios stuff and I know that my dvd drive works. Has anybody else had a similar problem? You have to burn the ISO file to a disc with Nero or some equivalent program. You can't just COPY it off and expect it to run. |

Solve : Delayed audio? |
Answer» Noob here, I've checked FAQs and search but no luck finding an answer, so here goes. Please post the computer model next time. Codecs are not related to online videos as they are relatively dependent on flash player plugins. Try reinstalling your sound driver from the manufacturing support site. Try closing out any programs that could be simultaneously running when this issue happens. See also your OS has received all current windows updates. Remove Spybot completely from your system as it is not recommended nowadays. Spywareblaster would suffice as additional browsing protection software. The computer model is listed in my 'computer SPECS' on the left hand side, an HP p6675uk. I should have said I re-installed the sound driver already. Windows updates are always, err, up to date. I don't have any programs running in the background, apart from the ones which have always been running before and after this issue arose. I have tried disabling background stuff but the problem persists. When did Spybot become a bad thing? ('bad' is my word but you imply it's not 'good') I've had it on my computers for over ten years and I've never before read a word against it, quite the contrary. If Skype is good or bad is not the question. Rather, if Skype is completely removed, does the problem go away? Quote from: SonicScot on August 06, 2013, 05:46:35 AM When did Spybot become a bad thing? ('bad' is my word but you imply it's not 'good') I've had it on my computers for over ten years and I've never before read a word against it, quite the contrary. If it helps, I've also been using Spybot for a long time and never had it cause a problem. I'll follow along to see why it's apparently no longer recommended, definitely news to me. Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 06, 2013, 08:28:21 AM If Skype is good or bad is not the question. I'm assuming you mean Spybot as Skype hasn't come into this at all... Well, I just removed Spybot and restarted my computer. After initially forgetting my password I was able to open Chrome and start loading videos with no loss of sound! I'm hopeful that the problem I was having is now history, but I'm still surprised that Spybot would be causing the issue. Never before have I ever had Spybot give me grief, it's very disappointing to learn this. I'll be emailing them to explain what happened, maybe it's a glitch in their latest version because this has never happened before. Thanks for the advice jason2074 I don't see how this could have anything to do with chrome or spybot. It could be that a windows update updated your soundcard driver with a bad one. Go to the manufactures website and install the sound DRIVERS there. If you're running windows 7 (or Vista?) click your start button and type 'view reliability history' in the search box. Look at the logs around the time your sound started giving you problems and see what may have been the culprit. To rule out a hardware issue, i'd load a live linux cd and see if your sound is still messed up. Also if you have a system restore, you can try rolling back to a time when it worked. Since one of Spybot's functions is blocking files from executing i don't understand why you can't see that it may in fact be the culprit here... windows Update is not the issue. All I can tell you guys is that once I removed Spybot from my computer all the problems I was having stopped. I'm now in discussion with safer networking to see if they can explain why this happened. If they can explain to me what went wrong and how to avoid a repeat of those issues I'd be happy to use Spybot again. After all, it ran on my computers just fine for many years and appeared to be very SUCCESSFUL at finding 'nasties'. I have also championed it to many friends over the years but now I feel I should call on these friends to see if they too are having similar issues. |

Solve : Who uses Vista Beta? |
Answer» I want to know who uses Vista Beta or Tried to use it and it didnt work.. and what kind of problems did you meet on the way?The poll is flawed. Wouldn't it be much better for you to ask do you use Vista Beta, yes or no? Individually, how are we supposed to know how many others use it? And what if we all vote in contradictory ways. Plus, there are only a couple of dozen or so active regular users, never mind 1000. And what if 241 people used it, what then? Edit: poll changed, hee hee.I thought that I should TRY it, then I saw the requirements! I don't have 1gig of RAM! And why the heck should and OS require [emailprotected]! It looks like it will get better, but I will WAIT before I even poke it with a 20 yard stick.Quote <snip> Amen to that! Just say "No". LOL ........ Why on EARTH would anyone wish to spend the time to install a Beta operating system ....only to discover that it is flawed ........ LOL I'll wait until such times as the final release comes out and the service packs and fixes are in place . dl65 Quote LOL ........ Why on earth would anyone wish to spend the time to install a Beta operating system ....only to discover that it is flawed ........ LOL Their main OS (XP) is flawed also...ohh the irony...I was using Windows 98SE up until a couple of years AGO. Getting a newly released operation system is risky enough, getting the beta is asking for trouble. |
