Solve : Trying to boot from USB?

Answer»

Howdy!

I've inherited a desktop and don't have the password so I'm using ophcrack on my flash drive.

I got everything ready, used Tazusb and burned the ISO, now I'm having trouble booting it.

I went into BIOS and started messing with the boot settings.
It doesn't have usb in the boot device priority menu, but has the option to boot USB devices first. EVEN after I enabled both USB boot and Boot Usb Devices First
it's still not booting Ophcrack.

I'm in a pickle, fellas.Your best bet would be to boot from a Windows disk, wipe the drive and start with a fresh install.

That's fine and dandy but if that's the case I'll be installing ubuntu so I need to know how to boot from usb anyway. You just select it from the list of boot devices, or SET USB as the first boot device.
You'll need to first make the USB drive bootable, you don't burn the Ubuntu ISO to the USB drive as "burning" is what you would do to transfer the ISO to a CD or DVD. Here are instructions to make a bootable Ubuntu stick.Quote from: Calum on July 30, 2013, 09:57:41 AM

I've done all that, my friend.

My dilemma is that the usb isn't in my list of boot devices.USB booting may not be fully supported on the desktop you inherited. Can't you burn a CD & boot from that?Just so you know without a crowbar and a day's work Windows will refuse to boot from an external HDD...but i guess you figured that part out by now.
Best thing to test would be the suggestions above with Linux...As mentioned, yumi is an easy way to make a bootable flash drive with tons of linux distros and other tools.
Some BIOS won't recognize a flash drive as a USB device but as hard drive. Poke around in your BIOS and see if your flash drive is showing up as a hard drive. Sometimes you'll see your flash drive sitting below the hard drive in the boot order. Just move it above your hard drive(s) and your good to go.
ALSO as mentioned, why not just burn a linux distro onto a disk?
I'm new here, why is unlocking windows password off limits? Anyone with malicious intents can easily circumvent it and access the data anyway. Quote from: skeen on August 07, 2013, 01:38:28 AM

Bypassing the password is, in some instances, OK. Using a utility such as ophcrack which, I believe, will show the current password, is a no. Please see the FORUM rules for more information, there's a link to an article which may be helpful in that instance.

Solve : Windows 7 Blue Screen STOP: 0x000000F4: No Dump File 0xc0000010?

Answer»

So I have a Blue Screen problem on my computer. SPECS are Alienware M17xR3, Windows 7 64bit, 16GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD 6870M, Intel Core I7 QUAD. So my computer sometimes after sitting for a while will freeze up and give me the Blue Screen. At times, the computer will just stop responding and everything will freeze up, no blue screen. No dump files are being created. Tried to get dump file from BlueScreenReader and nothing. Just took screenshot of crash its attached. Before this happened, The screen was doing some flickering, but it stopped. Not sure if this is related. I did install an extra 4GB of ram, but everything seemed to go just fine. Blue Screen code STOP: 0x000000F4 then at the bottom No Dump File 0xc0000010.

Specific causes are many, and often best resolved by a careful history of the problem and the circumstances of the error MESSAGE. One user, who experienced this on return from Standby mode on Win XP SP2, found the cause was that Windows was installed on a slave drive; compare KB 330100.

Was there another HDD connected to this PC at some point ? ?I had a Portable 1TB harddrive connected through USB. Just to drag and drop files between. and a USB pendrive. that is it. Were there any programs running at the time?

My HP Laptop has blue screened over 5 times over the 1.5 yrs I've had it, and normally it's when I'm running photoshop + streaming a youtube video + another high cpu program. So just to clarify...there was never another HDD with an installed OS on this PC ? ?
This is a rare error message for Win7...more common for XP so you may want to DLoad and run the Free HDD diagnostics from the manuf. site...run the long TEST.

Not without a working cd burner!

I think i must have missed something, Couldn't the cd DRIVE be taken out of one computer, Install and then transferred back?

Solve : windows vista is being stupid?

oh well i wanted to run vista cuz i mostly wanted some change. media center got boring for me. and the thing the caught me eye was the graphix. there so nice. it way diffrent from windows xp. the folder ICON is better cuz it actually shows the folder open a little and some of the programs in it. the thing i hate about it is it uses alot of system resources. and the graphics really slow me down because i only got a 64MB graphics card. they just gave it more detail. its awesome but i hate the bugsSo, grasshopper, have you learned the wisdom of the mouse who was so impatient to get the cheese that he failed to see the cat waiting to pounce? According to MS your system might be a little shy on horsepower for Vista...

A new PC that carries the Windows Vista Capable PC logo can run Windows Vista. All editions of Windows Vista will deliver core EXPERIENCES such as innovations in organizing and finding information, security, and reliability. All Windows Vista Capable PCs will run these core experiences at a minimum. Some features available in the premium editions of Windows Vista—like the new Windows Aero user experience—may require advanced or additional hardware.

A Windows Vista Capable PC INCLUDES at least:

* A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
* 512 MB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs

To get an even better Windows Vista experience, including the Windows Aero user experience, ask for a Capable PC that is designated Premium Ready, or choose a PC that meets or exceeds the Premium Ready requirements described below. Features available in specific premium editions of Windows Vista, such as the ability to watch and record live TV, may require additional hardware.

A Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:

* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
* 1 GB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
* 128 MB of graphics memory.
* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.

Solve : Need to recover information from old HP laptop, every option a dead end?

Answer»

My mom has an old Hewlett-Packard Pavilion g7 laptop, running windows 7. She's long since forgotten her password for it, and there's important information on the hard drive that we need to recover, but can't access. There's only one user account, the administrator account seems to be disabled. The original boot disk, if we ever had it, is long since LOST. Trying to boot from a flash drive hit a dead end when the installer said we'd need an .iso file and the Microsoft website where I tried to download that file said we'd need to contact the manufacturer. Trying to boot up in safe mode with a command PROMPT ALSO hit a dead end, because instead of a command prompt, it sends us to the login screen. I did find a program that's supposed to be able to change the password from a flash drive, but can't afford it.Since her MACHINE is running Windows 7, if you attach the drive to another computer and attempt to access data from the drive, you will probably be told you aren't authorized to access that data, only the owner can. If that happens, you will need to take ownership of the folders/files you wish to access. https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/quick-tip-take-ownership-of-files-and-folders-in-windows/Nice catch strollin... Yeah, only because I've encountered that a few times myself!Ditto...

Solve : Random empty dialog boxes popup on desktop?

Answer»

For the past few weeks, there have been random popups of completely empty dialog boxes, featuring only 2 buttons (OK and Cancel), appearing on my desktop. I had just finished putting together a new custom PC in early July and I'm still in the PROCESS of installing old programs and configuring everything just the way I want it. Please see below for an attached image.

As far as I could tell, the popups are completely random. Sometimes one POPUP would appear and that would be it for the day. Sometimes I would close one and another would follow immediately (It doesn't matter if I hit OK or cancel). A couple of times, I would leave my computer on idle for a few hours, and I would return with literally dozens of those windows cascaded on the desktop.

I don't believe they are associated with any specific programs, as they happen while I'm idling and while using other applications. I've ran virus scans, spyware scans, sfc /scannow, memtest...no luck, but like I said, it's pretty much a brand new machine. I also can't SEEM to match the popups with any specific warnings or errors in the event viewer, so no luck tracing it that way. I've also tried retracing my installation steps and uninstalling and/or doing a system restore to any programs I think are causing it, but the list is pretty slim.

Specs:
Windows 7 x64 SP1
Intel i7 4770K
Asus Maximus VI Hero
8GB Corsair Vengeance @1600
Intel 320 series SSD 160GB
Samsung Spinpoint 1TB
Asus DVD/R
Seasonix X750 Gold PSU
Asus GTX 760 GPU

Anyway, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried a new user account?

It is rare, but not impossible for a drive to be infected with something evil.*

Next, remove the Hard drive, put in an old drive, install Windows from the DVD. Now that new install on an old drive should not have any pop ups.

* EDIT: I AM NOT PARANOID. OK, Yes I am.But I did not MAKE this up. It has already been documented with SEAGATE drives from Taiwan.
Honestly, there is not a direct answer to that pop up box other than opening task manager and identify it from the processes tab the next time it comes out. Anything added from the process tab would be able to right-click the process and open the location. What protection apps exactly have you scanned with ? ?

Solve : Pointer auto-click on laptop?

Answer»

Hi all ... I have an older Dell Inspiron E1505 with Vista HOME Edition. I still use this for music and Karaoke functions. However .... I have this frustration I have not been able to disable. I don't know if it is some sort of TOUCH pad feature or, how it works My daughter had an HP Laptop with Vista and it did the same thing.
Using the touchpad (I haven't noticed while using a mouse connected but, it could be), if I leave the pointer hovering over say, a folder, after a second or two, it will open that folder on its own. This GETS very frustrating when looking through a list of folders to find the one I want.
All I am asking is for someone to give me a solution to turn this feature off.
I am going to cross-post this in the "Hardware" forum as well.Start by :

Clicking the Start button, click Control Panel, click Ease of Access, click Ease of Access Center, and then click Make the mouse easier to use.

And turn off
Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse. This option makes it easier to select and activate a window by pointing at it with the mouse rather than by clicking it.This option is not ticked ("Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse." is the only option under "Make it easier to switch between WINDOWS".

Solve : reinstallin and older version of windows?

Answer»

hello i decided to try out windows vista and i hate it. i want to install media center again but its not letting me. it says there is a newer version of windows installed. and i dont want to format my hd cuz i got important data on it.If it is not in Add and Remove programs you are SOL. There will be no WAY to revert back other than formatting the DRIVE. Playing with OS'es can get you in trouble, and you should always back up your data before doing something like this. What file system does Vista use :-? Would the data files be accessible if the hdd was slaved on a pc running XP or Media Center :-?

Good luck

If you have your "my documents" folder PASSWORD protected, and ESPECIALLY, locked to other users, make sure you undo it before SLAVING the harddrive to another computer. Don't make my mistake. That's an excellent point. Many people have "password protected" their files from themselves.

Solve : Those of you who UPGRADED to XP...?

Answer»

True. You have to physically REMOVE the hard drive of the old one and connect it inside the new one. Or get someone else with a CDRW drive to do it and burn you a CD.

The Pen Drive just plugs in the USB port on the old machine and WinME will instantly recognize it as a storage DEVICE (THINK portable hard drive). They have CD-RWs with that much space??? OH.... "RW"!!! Nevermind....

I'd seen those storage devices used on my favorite show but I had know idea what they were called. The pen drive sounds like a very good idea though. It can be emptied right? It's just like a portable hard drive except SMALLER and no moving parts.

Solve : system freezes on shutdown/reboot?

Answer»

Okay. Ran the Live CD. Had to unplug/reconnect my mouse to get it engaged. This is cute: never could get my keyboard to engage (it's also usb). However, when told to shut down the computer, it did. So, where does that LEAVE me?You have hardware issues. You need to start by trying another mouse. Borrow one for a few minutes if nothing else. Some neighbor has one, honest.

What else does not work correctly? The shutdown process. That's what's really bugging me. It freezes on the Windows is shutting down screen and must manually be shut down. Then scan disk runs on next boot. It won't shut down or reboot, even if software initiated (such as Microsoft Update).Quote

Were you using a real Windows CD?

What about this question? Was the hard drive new or was it from a previous install of WIndows on another system?Well, this is a new hard drive, and YES, a REAL Windows cd, bought and paid for by me. I had initially tried to use my old hard drive, but discovered it had some issues itself (not surprising, it's several years old). So, I purchased a brand new (not refurbished) SATA drive. If you simply start the computer with the mouse disconnected, will the computer shutdown properly by using only the keyboard? THOUGHT maybe you'd found a clue! No such luck. It still won't shut down. When it boots up and starts opening the explorer, something happens because the "chord" sound plays, but it's gone by the time my screen opens up. I checked the event logs and there's nothing there. Can't figure that one, either.Another idea: start Windows in Safe Mode and see whether it will shutdown without freezing.Tried safemode. Mouse still didn't work and shutdown froze just like always. I did change my mouse out like gx1_man suggested and I'm not having that problem anymore (so far). Still can't figure the shutdown hangup tho.So, problem solved, right? Clearly, it was either hardware or driver issue with the mouse; most likely, hardware issue, as GX1_MAN said.

I had a problem with my LOGITECH wireless mouse/keyboard combo last year after replacing my hard drive and freahly installing Windows. I had downloaded the latest version of Logitech's SetPoint software, but was experiencing some erratic freezing of the mouse. I UNINSTALLED that version of SetPoint, went back to the version that came on CD with the mouse/keyboard, and the problem went away.Okay, mouse problem solved. I still need to get the system to shutdown properly. Please, does anyone have any ideas??? One thing I have discovered is that it STOPS responding even before the "exit Windows" sound plays. It seems that it isn't actually stopping any processes properly. It just instantly goes to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and then nothing.

Solve : WinXP and Memory?

Answer»

I have just installed 1.5 GB of DDRam on my PC and I noticed that my winXP doesn't work properly anymore. I heard that windows XP has difficulties managing over 1GB of RAM. Does anyone know if this is true? Can anyone tell me why (if YES)?
Not true. Did you install new memory along with your old? If so, are they different brands? Do you know the maximum amount of memory your motherboard will accomodate? What is the make and model of your computer? What brand memory did you buy, and what specific memory?

You say your computer does not "work properly". Exactly, what do you mean? Does it completely bootup? Most likely you either have it installed wrong or you bought the wrong RAM for that machine. Go to www.crucial.com and see what you should have gotten and COMPARE ALL the details (not just speed) to what you got.

You may want to remove and reseat the RAM, and even run memtest on it (free download at www.memtest86.com). Check each stick at a time, then all together for at least an hour.

Again the specifics on your problem would be illuminating. My PC works generally fine, my CPU is an Athlon 64 on 3000Mhz, mainboard MSI K8N Neo4 with two GEIL memory sticks one of 1GB and another one of 512MB with identical parameters. What bothers me is the fact that he keeps bulding virtual memory of over 700MB even if it has over 1GB of free memory. I've checked in CONTROL Panel to make sure that the virtual memory is set to AUTOMATIC. On top of that, I haven't noticed any change in the speed that applications are ran (games, software, webpages...), they even run slower and I don't think that is a normal thing to happen.
I have posted this question here because I heard that WinXP has difficulties in managing amounts of memory exceeding 1GB. Even the salesman where I've bought the 1GB stick told me this.
That's about all :-/
" I haven't noticed any change in the speed that applications are ran (games, software, webpages...), they even run slower ..." Well, which is it, no change or slower? If, indeed, slower, then there's clearly something not right, but I'm not sure what it is. Did you follow GX1_MAN's advice?

As far as virtual memory is concerned, I believe it's normal for Windows, if you let it manage virtual memory, to allocate more SPACE when you increase RAM.

"I have posted this question here because I heard that WinXP has difficulties in managing amounts of memory exceeding 1GB. Even the salesman where I've bought the 1GB stick told me this." Well, then , why did you go ahead and buy an additional 1GB?

I believe Win XP is supposed to be able to handle up to 4GB on most systems. If you do some Googling, I think you'll find numerous references stating that.

Solve : windows 7 update problems?

Answer»

hello
my dell desktop with windows 7 is not updating.
when i go to control panel and select "updates" the dreaded wheel spin chokes the COMPUTER and i need to restart.

i do believe i know what the issue is.....
years ago when windows was forcing the 10 update i erased the KB something ? files to stop this. while it did cure the forced update to 10, my computer has not been updated in years.

i know its time to MOVE on to 10 but until i set myself up with a new computer i would like to KEEP this 7 machine healthy.
should i try to install the needed files and update or let well enough alone in light of the current choking issue when i hit the update icon?
dont want to create a bigger problem.

thanks for any adviceHow much time and hard work do you want to invest?
Microsoft no longer gives any free help for Windows 7 users. Maybe you might find somebody in you town that would like to help you out. But do not expect a technician to be able t o help you with Windows 7 now. You should have updated to windows 10 long ago. Windows 10 has good recovery tools, but that does not help you with Windows 7 at this pint.

My best advice is go buy a new or used Windows 10 computer. You can get a refurbished unit without monitor for f about $100. That is what you might pay to fix you old computer, but there is not sure way of knowing if you can do that.

Unless there is some update you absolutely cannot live without, take the old advice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The updates obsession is overblown. I been using XP Pro for over three years without even one malware infection, despite its 2014 EOL/EOS. By the way, the M$ promise/threat of no updates was malarkey, as most of what they say always is...I was being inundated with KB stealth-installs until I closed their BACKDOORS into XP a year ago. Count yourself lucky, as it took me a lot more effort than deleting one KB to lock M$ out of my rig. From what I hear on the internet, they is up to their old tricks with Win 7 users, deploying a SLEW of KB stealth-installs to force upgrade to Win 8 or 10. As I am preparing to switch to Win 7 Pro, I have assembled a long list of KB nasties to block or uninstall. If you are worried about security, get a wired-only router with SPI & NAT firewall. I'd credit that with keeping my old XP bulletproof. He's been gone since March...

Guys, I desperately need help.

So, I got a "new" disk (used) and wanted to set up a moving for my data.

Ater formatting a hard disk and installing Win 7 - 32bits, on an empty disk, I wanted to restart with the system that was being used previously and I made a mistake that I think caused the corruption of the registry of said system.

The consecuence being the after following boots, reboots and even windows formatting, almost each and every one of the non windows executables in any condition (installed or not, in the system disk or not) crashes APPCRASH with the same "exception code": 8000000e

Now for the creepiest part, ON BOTH PHYSICAL DISCS.

Exactly how did I screw it up?

Well, I have disk #1 and disk #2.

I took disk #2 empty and "new" (used) took a bootable pendrive, formatted, partitioned and installed the Win that I mentioned.

I booted up, connected to the internet, tried to update with win update and it gave me an error (code 8007000e)

I left it for later, I went to system features, I deactivated the tablet pc and activated the Windows games because... Why not? and then rebooted

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think that instead of rebooting in #2, I connected disk #1 because I wanted to check some things there. I copied some programs and drivers to disk #2's 2nd partition (not the system partition) and rebooted.

When trying to return to disk #2 this nightmare began... No program either installed or packaged other than Windows stock, works correctly and all of them gives the same error.

The most incredible thing is... THE SAME BEGAN TO HAPPEN ON DISC 1

It is an absolutely BAFFLING thing for me, especially with my limited knowledge.

Disk #2 may be faulty in some way. Since the problem is repeated even after formatting said disk from zero, doing a clean installation.

BUT HOW THE [emailprotected] THAT AFFECTED THE OTHER DISC

The only thing I suspect at this point is that any file from disk 1 was corrupted, therefore, after looking for advice and in google, of course, and with no success, decided to reformat disk #2, after using "chkdsk", WITHOUT any backup of disk 1, of any kind.

So, I was able to reinstall Windows 7 on both disks individually

First on previously used disk #1 formatting the available partition, with successful functioning and usage, I used the Crystal Disk to see the status of disk #2 and resulted to have +800 days running and 1 irrecoverable sector, according the program (something unexpected and that bothered me, a lot) then used HDD LLF and applied to the disk #2, then WD tool for TESTING an redelete just in case. All test went fine and delete was successful...

Then proceeded to repeat windows instalation on disk #2

Individually, they worked without apparent problems after installing the necessary programs (browser, work, Windows LOADER, etc. Saved from a pendrive). I did several reboots and installs on both with only 1 disk connected, I could even see the files on the backup partition of disk 1 without problems when that one was on, but I did not try to run any programa that was there, out of fear more than anything, although I should have done it to rule out problems there. It should be noted that this disk is practically new and has never presented problems other than the little space of 230 Gb

But when I connected disk #2 as master and disk #1 with the backup I need as slave, enter Users/Kevin, request permission to open, then go find the driver for my video card and try to install, the problems returned.

ON BOTH DISKS ONCE MORE

Again, the problem is that any executable of any type (installed or not, on disk or not) simply does not work and crashes, having in common only the exception code 8000000e.

Both disks were formatted and had a clean install, so it cannot be a Windows problem... I guess.

An LLF has already been made on the disk #2

Is it possible that the mistake I made somehow corrupted something on any of the discs? (Probably the first?)

Could disk 2 be incompatible with disk 1?

What could be the cause of this problem?

Before wanting to start using disk 2, I already had my regular disk connected to another backup disk that I even used to replace with another one depending on my needs, that is, counting the "new" one I have 4 SATA HDDs, of which 3 were working regularly . So the origin of the problem must be in the used disk, but it really puzzles me how that crash spreads from one system to another like a *censored* virus.

The only thing that occurs to me now is not to touch the used disk again, because it is useless if you are going to reject the backup files that I need to have on hand, and even less before the possibility that some inexplicable way, corrupts files of other discs.

Right now I will be trying a few more things because I don't have an alternative to use and that way keep working.

So I PLEEEEEASE, expect that some can help me solve this mystery, at leas it is to me, and not go and hang myself.

Thanks in advance.
So what device is this that it defaults to Tablet pc mode, a HYBRID tablet/Laptop maybe. Can we have the make and model ?

Was it supplied with Windows 7 32 bit ?

At this stage it is more likely there is a fault with the memory most models like Dell and HP have diagnostics built in to test the hardware, hence the request for details of the hardware.

Also details can you give on the 2 drives please.

Yes you can do a dual boot, i did with longhorn , that was vista before it was namedIf you go that route, backup your DATA first, and regularly. It is a beta product and it is a Microsoft product. Disasters WILL occur.Eek! No way would I let an MS beta share disk space with a working PC!!! Backups notwithstanding.Quote

Solve : laptop starts bios automaticly?

Hi guys my little brother turned ny bios to default atm when i stat computer it goes to vios i cant open windows please help :-(Make sure the Boot order has:

CD or DVD ROM (first)
Hard Drive (second)
Network Boot Device(Third if this is an option )

If the BIOS is password protected then please share make/model of the computer. Some can not be easily reset by CMOS battery!

If the BIOS is always coming up without pressing the hot key for the BIOS then maybe there is a stuck key on the keyboard that is triggering the BIOS to pop up, but strangely not triggering a keyboard failure error of a stuck key. What did your brother do?
You can restore the BIOS to the default values and it should work.
I GOT asus n56vz and i cant change boot orders and there is not any boot order and i couldnt find stuck key in my keynoardMy problem is when i press power button it dont go windows starts bios and i coulsnt find any stuck key in keybpard there is no boot option and at main screen of bios that say im user and it wants password at opejing bios i dont write anything and press enter and i can open that without password but that say im user and i cant change anythingAsk you brother what he did.
Sorry if I sound cynical, but isn't amazing the number of laptop owners who come on here and say "My little brother/sister/kids/cat/dog did something to my laptop and now it wants a password when I start it!"
http://www.manualowl.com/m/Asus/N56VZ/Manual/261972

You need that Master Password according to page A-8 of the user manual or else it will have to go back to factory for service. All google hits on this model show failure to reset the BIOS to default by removing cmos battery.

I'd have your brother cough up the password or have him pay for it to be replaced or serviced! That is assuming that your the rightful owner and am not using this forum to crack into your brothers privacy etc as we have had many people in the past claim that its a problem with their system and its really not their system that they want into but they are looking for a way to hack/crack into it. *This password setting was intentional. The person who set this up ( brother or otherwise ) knew what they were doing when they did it!
Below as copy/pasted from the manual. The hard drive is password protected in the BIOS.

A-8 Notebook PC User ManualHDD PasswordTo set the HDD password:
1. On the Security screen, click Set Master Password, TYPE in a password and press [Enter].
2. Re-type to confirm the password and press [Enter].
3. Click Set User Password and repeat the previous steps to set up the user password.
4. Password is then set.

• The HDD Password can only be altered when you log in with Administrator PRIVILEGE.
• You have to set Master Password before setting the User Password. You will be asked to enter user password first (if there is one), then HDD user password when you power on the Notebook PC and cannot enter the operating system if you fail to enter the correct passwordsOK problem fixed ty everyoneHow...? ?...pray tell.I am guessing this statement was the cure!

Solve : Visat Public Beta out today?

Well i know im going to Download it as soon as the MS file server recover from the sledge hamer blows there taking right now

How many of you guys intend on giving this near final release a Whack?Download it?!?! For free?!? Do they let you keep it, or remove it after a certain amount of TIME (like a trial)Pass. At any price.I agree with GX1_Man. Pass at any price. I simply don't have the inclination or the wherewithal to go thru another software/hardware update cycle. I have peaked at my level of incompetence.

Zylstra555: Those participating in the public tests will be able to use Vista for up to one year before having to purchase a copy.

8-)im pretty sure its gonna be loaded with problems at its first release. and if microsoft is actually giving something AWAY for free, im guessing they want u to test it for them.I heard that they are removing the menu bars out of most of the programs for it. And the file extensions are being re-named so no more cross platform file transfers.
But I say pass, from all that I've heard, it is a bigger pain than it is worth.plus windows xp STILL has enough problems as it is....Quote

Download it?!?! For free?!? Do they let you keep it, or remove it after a certain amount of time (like a trial)

It expires on 1 june 2007, then you HAVE to buy the retail version as you cant go back to xp. So youre basically trapped into buying it once its installed
These kinds of release are partly intended for I.T. companies to install on testbed computers, so they get a preview of the technology and are ready to advise clients when the time comes to upgrade. I suspect CDs of the Beta OS are included with Technet subscriptions. I'm changing job to work for an ISP come September, and I will be very interested to give it a whirl. On a redundant PC utterly disconnected from the NETWORK...I was itching to get my hand on it see how bad it can get broken , but the DL serves are still swamped , and the Boss wont let use use Torrents in the Office , even tho he wonts it too

I had the Frist Alpha of Longhorn and boy was it unstable , i change'ed the name of one Of my HDD's and it Broke the hole OS it never Booted again , so i left it like that.. i only deleted the partiction a few weeks ago , but ATM my PC is very much broke so it wont matter anyhowConsidering the amount of space those stupid XP 'fixes' and UPDATES take up on my hard drive I dont feel very good about a beta os from microsoft. But, I am completely interested and curious about new technological stuff, but for now Vista gets a great big MEH

Solve : Windows 7 Activation Error From Gifted Laptop?

Answer»

I received a DELL laptop as part of my severence from my old job 6 months ago. After receiving activation warningsover the last few weeks, TODAY the OS advised me it is not a valid COPY of Windows. I guess this has something to do with the volume licensing from where it came from.
What options do I have without loosing my applications and data? Sbould I purchase a Windows8 UPGRADE product or a full Windows 8 license? I presume Win7 is no longer available.
Im in AU.
Thanks.
What version of Windows is on there at the minute, i.e Home Premium, Pro, Enterprise or Ultimate? If it's Enterprise, you'll need to buy a new OS, because it can only be activated through volume licensing keys as far as I am aware. If it's something else, you have the option to buy a Windows 7 key, if you can find one.
Otherwise, you'll have to go for Windows 8, I would probably go for a full rather than upgrade. Its enterprise. Ok thanks for the help I better buy win8 then.
Appreciate the fast responseWin7 is still available...

Solve : Fresh install of XP Pro and everything is laggy?

Answer»

I had some computer problems, and ended up reinstalling Windows.

Whenever I scroll, such as in a webpage, or if I am dragging a window across the screen, or a number of other things, it's very laggy. This wasn't a problem before, and otherwise everything loads up fast and I have no problems with performance.

Thanks. How about some details on the hardware involved, is SP2 applied and all updates, and what antivirus/spyware protection is being used. You have posted nothing for us to work with.

What were the problems before?I SUPPOSE you did reinstall the video drivers, didn't you? Any other drivers left behind? (for motherboard)Yeah I'm SORRY about that. I was in a rush when I wrote it.

I just installed SP2 with no problems, then checked for updates, and I'm all good in that department.

I use Spybot and Ad-aware most frequently, and AVG for viruses.

As for the video drivers thing, that kinda went over my head. I'm not much of a computer pro myself, hence why I keep running into trouble. I just installed XP (after a while of trying to figure out how to do it) and then that is that.

The problem I had prior to the reinstall is kind of embarrassing. I don't know why I keep trying these things, but I installed a "Windows Vista Transformation Pack" thing, and it messed up my system so that when it gets to the boot screen, it freezes and doesn't load Windows. I'm definitely learning from my mistakes this TIME though. No more of that crap.

Another thing that occured to me, though this wasn't a problem before, is that I have 11.6 GB left out of a 120 GB hard drive from which I'm running Windows. And that's only after I just now got rid of about 10 Gigs. Might this have ANYTHING to do with it?

Thanks. You need to have 15% of your disk space free for the Windows swap file so some extensive housekeeping is in order.

You also need to reinstall all of the appropriate drivers so your hardware will be run as well as possible. Is this a laptop or desktop? What make /model is the computer or motherboard? If you don't know, download Everest Home and find out so we can help you get those drivers.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlWell after a bit more cleaning I have 21.7 gigs free. I could probably do a bit more too.

It's a desktop. The motherboard on my custom built PC died so I moved all my other parts to an older pre-built HP computer until I can afford a new motherboard. I used Everest Home and got the motherboard info:

Motherboard:
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 2083 MHz (12.5 x 167) 2800+
Motherboard Name Asus A7N8X-LA (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio, Video, LAN, IEEE-1394)
Motherboard Chipset nVIDIA nForce2 IGP
System Memory 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Asus AMI (04/21/03)
Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

Anything else needed?Blah my bad.

It turns out the only issue was, in fact, the video drivers.

So it's all good in the hood now. Thanks for your help at least :]Glad you are all fixed up, and thanks for posting back.

Solve : Intermittent Laptop freezing?

I did not know there was a Firefox x64. In the video I watched the guy was talking about Aurora. Which of these are the most stable. I was running PaleMoon which is designed after FF but I really didn't find much more as the poster above put it "power" or anything resembling that. As a matter of fact some of the ADD ons didn't work or weren't compatible. I just found that with the FF x64 I just installed. One of my add ons doesn't work with it yet, although it's a pretty popular add on, (Internet Download MANAGER) so I can't see the developers leaving that go for very long if they are trying to encourage people to use the DEVELOPER builds. You said you used FF, is it Firefox x86 or are running the nightly builds?Quote from: Computer_Commando on July 29, 2013, 12:36:35 PM

I really don't feel the extra as you put it power from these builds. They benchmark out at close to the same scores. To me they are so similar it's hard to even tell. There is an open source build out called Cyberfox that is also a x64 and I didn't find much benefit from that either. Who knows maybe I'm jinxed. The most straight forward way is SURELY to WRITE a program to decode the data structure of current fonts in Windows or other sources and transfer them into NEW fonts. Solve : What type of operating system do you have??

Answer» Hi. I just posted this poll because i want to see what kinds of operating systems do they have...The poll needs a multiple OS option.
I'm using windows 98. As soon as I can get to it, I will also have a Linux flavor and one of the BSDs. Haven't decided on which ones. My hardware limitations will probably make the DECISION for me, old PC with RAM, HD and CDRW upgrades.
While I'm LOOKING FORWARD to learning Linux and either free or open BSD, I won't USE ANYTHING newer than 98 for windows. XP is nothing but an over-patched security nightmare and Vista will likely be worse and wouldn't run on my hardware anyway.

Solve : PNG image urls are downloading instead of loading on browsers.?

Answer»

On both Chrome and IE, when someone links me an image url that is for a png file, it will download the image instead of showing it my browser. How do I fix this. Seems like the MIME settings for the png files are whacked up...

Open up the registry editor ( regedit in the start menu search box)

Goto the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT "folder" (see root.png)
You will have to do a little bit of scrolling but find .png "folder" in the ROOT "folder" (see png.png)

With it selected you see SOMETHING like on the right side of the editor.

Are the settings similar/the same as mine?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Yeah it looks exactly the same.Right click the .png folder and select export, save the reg file to the DESKTOP or somewhere easily accessible and upload the file here

Use Attachments and other OPTIONS when posting to upload it.the site is saying the file cannot be uploaded. Also do the following in Chrome (all within the same tab),

open the up the developers console (press ctrl+shift+I) and open the network tab

Then open up a png file (here is a random picture http://i.imgur.com/whEDpWt.png

After it has completed processing the loading of the image/file

take a SCREEN cap of the header data for the image (see attached image for reference)

You can easily capture parts of the screen by using the snipping tool built in to windows (search snip from the start menu search box)

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: Kaylachan1990 on July 29, 2013, 12:08:14 PM

the site is saying the file cannot be uploaded.

Export the png folder again, when saving the file, change the filetype to text (txt) file.

Sorry should've taken note of the accepted filetypes Okay, did both, Chrome still downloaded the file. and hopefully the file will work now

Okay, did both, Chrome still downloaded the file. and hopefully the file will work now

OK I've updated the post above with more information about what to do with the chrome developer console.everything looks good in the registry for the png file type but now I need to check if the MIME types your system

in the registry editor goto file -> export

In the export dialog box in the selected branch box enter

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type

you can copy and paste this luckily

Save as txt file and upload It won't let me copy paste itHey, thought I'd let anyone LOOKING at this know. I upgraded IE from 9 to 10 and that fixed it there. I tried upgrading Chrome, but sadly that didn't work.

Solve : audiodg lagging system?

Answer» BUMP againOnly thing that comes to mind here is you have an incorrect driver installed for that card...New drivers aren't always better drivers.
Revert to the original and post back with the results...I don't know what the original driver version was, but I have had this version installed for quite some ages, likely since December; my OP states that I reinstalled the drivers, not updated them.

Also potentially relevant, but I have Beats completly disabled right now; both the Beats tray PROGRAM and the IDT audio "service" (despite seeming to have disappeared from services.msc, but it was in the services.exe PROCESS tree). It was for testing lag, and IIRC it helped a bit, but not nearly enough. I got a 35% audiodg USAGE earlier today.

EDIT: Just happened again, I saw the error reporting service start; checking the past logs confirms that the error reporting service is starting when the lag spike ends. Any way to log what is causing the service to start? Already checked the action center, no RECENT reports; I also don't see anything in the log viewer aside from it starting and stopping 3min later.

Normally, in that scenario you would download any of a number

Solve : ubuntu no longer works, how do I get windows back without activation key??

Answer»

Hello everyone, I installed ubuntu on my laptop ,and in the process, it asked me if I wanted to keep the windows 7 operating system or delete it and all the data I had on there. Unfortunately, I had to delete it because it oddly didn’t give me the option to keep windows 7 even though that’s what it was asking. Long story short, I messed up the booting code for ubuntu and now it won’t boot up. I just want windows 7 back. I know I can redownload the windows 7 OS onto a flash drive and boot it, but won’t it ask me for the activation key? What do I do then? Also, is it possible to get all my data back after I do?There should be a sticker on the bottom of the laptop with the key (provided the laptop originally came with Win 7).

Doubtful you can get your data back. Your best bet is to backup your data before doing anything else. Provided you have another computer, you could attach the laptop drive via a USB adapter and copy the data to the other computer.sorry for the late response, but the laptop is old and the sticker has faded away. is there anywhere else I can find the product key? and thank you for the backup suggestion.Hi
You don't say what laptop it is, most Windows 7 laptops had a recovery partition which may still be on the drive to do a factory restore. If it is still there you can access it from a key sequence at boot up and then you won't need to use a key. Also some manufactures use a GENERIC key for windows if we know the model we may be able to give you that number. Also Toshiba, Dell and Lenovo can either supply recovery media or a download to create the recovery media.

Note to self before loading another operating system.

Make a backup of my present OS.
Read the windows activation key or Windows key. Write it on a label under the battery or in the hard drive cover( very important with windows XP even if you have the key Microsoft won't activate it)
Or another idea is to get another drive for the computer to load Linux on used drives are available for a few dollars or even free.
Hey lisa, thank you for responding. my laptop is a HP pavillion dv6. I would like to see if I can do the factory reset option from booting up. How do I do this exactly? You could try this copied from another site.

To restore the computer from the recovery partition, follow these steps:
1. Access Recovery Manager in either of the following ways:
● Select Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager.
– or –
● Turn on or restart the computer, and then press ESC while the “Press the ESC key for STARTUP Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Then, press F11 while the “F11 (System Recovery)” message is displayed on the screen.
2. Click System Recovery in the Recovery Manager window.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.unfortunately it says "error" no such partition. and it GOES to grub rescue waiting for me to input a command. ill have to do more research. Thank you for your input lisa!So the recovery partition is lost /been deleted. Do you know anyone with the same model dv6 which is still running windows. If you do you can make the recovery pen drive on that laptop and use it on yours. If you were nice you would give the other owner the pen drive after you have used it. And make a new one for yourself.

Or you could check here https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph0714
It would pay to erase at least the first 300 mb of the hard drive or if you can find a replacement blank hard drive to put in, either would make running the recovery easy.

Is this your only computer? If you have another one, removing the drive from the laptop via the cover underneath, putting it into a USB caddy (SATA) and plugging it into the other computer would mean that you could at least see what is on the disk and if your files are there to be rescued. There is the small cost of the caddy (under £10 from Amazon) but this might also let you see if W.7 is there to recover. If it is, I read there is software that might be able to rescue the activation key from the Registry.

If you don't have any success with getting W.7 back, Ubuntu or Linux Mint are good operating systems. The Linux OS could just be reinstalled. I have given my laptop computer over entirely to Linux Mint.If you have *4GB RAM or greater and 160GB HDD or larger, an option may be to install Windows 10 64-bit Home Edition to it and when it asks for the activation key you select that you dont have a key. It will install and run like normal with just some customization features crippled. You then could run it that way or pay for the key to enable the disabled customization features. Initially Windows 10 will run normal, but after a period of time a watermark and reminder would be in the lower right corner telling you that it hasn't been activated yet. A friend of mine has been using his since 2018 without activating it and I am surprised that it doesn't run out like how it use to be 30-day access to system and then the OS wont work without activation.

8GB RAM or more is best with Windows 10 and a SSD drive vs HDD for best performance, however I have run Windows 10 32-bit in testing on 2GB RAM and while it works its slow on 2GB RAM and lots of HDD paging going on to compensate for lack of RAM.

Note that this suggestion is not a suggestion to use Windows 10 without activating it! Microsoft if they didn't want people to use it long term without proper activation, should have set a limit to its use and they haven't yet as far as I have been told. Its best to eventually pay them for an activation even though they created it in a way that it functions without a key and activation.awesome, thank you so much for the suggestions everyone! true, at the very least I can just install the linux OS again. i'll be OKAY no matter what. ill mark this thread as solved.

Solve : labtop won't boot after factory reset?

Answer»

My computer is a HP Envy 6, Windows 7 Home Premium, AMD A6-4455M APU with Radeon, Memory 3.47 GB, 64 bit, Drive Size 469.5 GB.

Today, I bought the labtop from a pawn shop without buying the 6 month insurance. I turned the labtop on and off. Later I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't boot windows. I went to the HP Recovery Manager and clicked on "Restore your computer to ORIGINAL factory condition". After a while it said, Recovery is complete. After the computer restarts and you have finished the initial setup of your computer, you must perform some additional important steps. Click finish to restart your computer now. So I clicked finish but it still wouldn't boot.

I turned the computer off and on with repeatedly clicking f8. In the ADVANCED Boot Options menu if I click Safe Mode it brings up the HP Recovery Manager which says Restoration Incomplete. The Restoration did not complete. Please select one of the following buttons: Save Log, Details, Retry.

I don't know what to do to get the labtop to turn on so I can use it. I hope I didn't mess up real bad. I'm a computer beginner. I'd be REALLY grateful if someone could help me out.Hard one, maybe is the drive faulty or some other problem WITHIN the system. I should say that you need to format the drive and reinstall the system from fresh...

How much will it cost? FLAME

For the operating system, or all the hardware upgrades to even run it?
Just the OS. Although I'm curious as to what the requirements are...

FlameStart saving now:

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/01/07/vista_requirements/

Wow so all I have to do is install more RAM, and maybe swap a video card if I think it's too SLOW... I meet the requirements as of now

FlameI'm upgrading soon to a level which run Vista but I have no intention of getting it.
Does anyone know why we need it I wonder?Ok how happy are you that it's not named LONGHORN LMAO

FlameI thought Longhorn was a bad name... Especially for an OS. Vista at least sounds generic lol

FlameSo you're saying that you like Longhorn over Vista? Or do you find Vista more creative or what?

Solve : cant download files?

Answer»

I have a computer running Windows 7 Pro. I am UNABLE to download files off of the internet. When I click on a file to download, it brings up the box and I can select where I want the file to be downloaded to. Then I get the green STATUS bar to show the download progress. When it gets to where it should be 100% complete, the download box closes and the file is not downloaded. Any ideas on how to fix this WOULD be appreciated.
What is your default DLoad location ? ?
Have you opened that FOLDER to see what's there ? ?I was trying to save to desktop and also to a folder on the desktop, no file there. I also checked in downloads folder, no files there eitherI fixed my problem. I had an infection that was blocking my ability to download from the internet.
That was gonna be my 2nd guess...
Glad to hear you are fixed up.

Solve : Move Everything From Old Drive to New Drive?

Answer» HI guys.

I signed up hoping somebody may be able to help me. I've seen similar posts all over the web but nobody ever seems to get a straight answer or a perfect solution.

My hard disk started playing up so I got a new one & installed Win7 64. I want to move everything from the old drive to the new drive because if I move it, I know that I've got it.

I've tried this many times in the past & have always had to resort to other methods.

I tried using the move command and some folders fail with an "Access is denied" message. Why is this? Is it because a folder has a certain name? Or is it because the files/folders have permissions left over from the previous install. Or something else?

Is it possible to move ABSOLUTELY everything?

I'd love feedback from those in the know.

Thanks for looking.Try taking ownership of the folders / files in question:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
When you say "try" are you saying you don't know if the whole drive can be copied?I'm saying it should work but since I'm not there there's no way I can be 100% certain. You can also USE disc imaging software.Moving files stops you from trying again after a failure and unless you have an IMAGE backup it's a bad strategy (and you should have image backups as a normal maintenance/backup procedure, true?).

Use an imaging software like clonezilla which boots from a cdrom and can copy the drive, for a free solution, or a paid/free Windows backup tool.

Windows now uses links that prevent simple copying AIUI and permissions/locked files also prevent simple copying unless you use volume shadow copying.Quote from: skywalka on July 25, 2013, 06:49:22 AM

Macrium Reflect
http://www.filehippo.com/download_macrium_reflect/Taking ownership certainly made a difference. I'm not sure to what extent because the drive seems to have died during the process.

Robocopy has a switch option to not resolve symbolic links etc.

I'm not interested in creating images. I doubt they would have worked with the damaged drive. Processing individual files would be more reliable.

Thanks.Actually imaging the drive contents and moving that to a HEALTHY HDD and then working on individual files would be a better alternative than relying on a failing drive so the above advice was solid...Quote from: patio on July 25, 2013, 07:41:26 PM

If I tried to make an image it would have failed so I'd have no image so no files.
By moving the files I have salvaged something. How do you know it would have failed ? ?

Solve : MSI File Not Found?

Answer»

I am trying to uninstall my Norton Professional 2004 antivirus on my windows me computer. I keep GETTING MSI file not found error - Microsoft windows installer not found. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! I am trying to uninstall my Norton Professional 2004 antivirus on my windows me computer:>Posted by: ForeverYoung

why! what was the problem! m_2Well, the antivirus is expired. I wanted to use Avast Antivirus but I figured I should completely take Norton antivirus off first so there wouldn't be any conflicts. On top of that, a computer specialist installed it for me a year AGO at no charge...(for the antivirus) and I have no idea what name he registered it under or anything.Type regedit in the run box and use the find for any navs....and use search in the local drive for folders and delete them all....

Windows vista........dont waste you money on it.....

testing failed.....It's good news to HEAR you are unburdening that machine of Norton's...however getting rid of it is no easy task.
Below you will find an UNINSTALLER for just that.

Solve : Toshiba Satellite A205-S5853 shuts down randomly?

Answer»

I have the above laptop with windows 7 on it, fresh install. It had windows vista on it previously, but the problem existed even then. Problem is that whenever Im running the laptop in normal mode, the laptop shutsoff randomly even with no programs running. I did some research on this and read that the nvidia graphics chips sometimes heat up and cuse this. However, when I start the laptop in safe mode, this random behaviour of shutdown does not happen. So it seems that there is some driver or device that gets started in normal mode that causes this shutdown behaviour. How would I go about finding what driver it is, if my deduction is correct?

Could there be any other cause
Safe Mode runs graphics at lowest setting, so the video card wont heat up like it would in normal desktop environment etc. I think your still dealing with atemp issue. Install speedfan if you can to the system when its running normal and look at temps. I have a feeling you may need to REPLACE thermal COMPOUND or a fan may not be keeping up with the heat output such as if its failing to spin at times orspinning too slow, or obstructed with hair, lint etc.

I had a Toshiba Qosmio with the same Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz CPU and GEFORCE 7300 Mobile and the thermal bond between the heat pads degraded and caused it to shutdown. I opened the laptop and carefully removed the heatsink assembly and applied arctic silver and reapplied heatsink and dropped my temp. I was idling AROUND 55-60C and games would peg it into 80C and cause shutdowns. I applied new thermal compound and locked heatsink down and now it never gets over 56C when gaming.I agree, if it's turning off it is most likely an overheating issue.

A cooling pad may help somewhat but it would be a bandaid solution at best.Had the same problem with an older Dell laptop. Opened it up and blew a load of dust out of the fan with an air duster can and have never had ANOTHER shutdown.I have a Toshiba Satellite L675 and will forever stay a Toshiba and Windows fan. Love the product!

I had the same issues with random shut downs and concluded that it was a over heating issue. You can take it to a computer store and have them take it apart and clean the inside. I highly suggest not doing this yourself because it can be a big hassle.

I did what I could with a little dust blower and have bought a laptop cooling fan. That right there solved my problem. Hope this helps!
