Solve : Blue Screen (Win7HomePrem64bit) on HP TouchSmart 300-1223 (All-in-one)? |
|
Answer» OK I have been having problems trying to get a client's computer fixed. It is an HP TouchSmart 300-1223 which is an all-in-one. First it was viruses. I got rid of 54 of them. Then the hard drive was bad. Just swapped it out and put a brand new install of Windows7 64-bit Home Premium. Did all of the updates. Official drivers. I even put a 4 gig stick of RAM in there instead of the 2 gig stick that ended up in there somehow. RAM was tested and working BTW. Ran like a rocket ship compared to before! Then I was testing to make sure everything was good to go so I could give this guy his computer back and it would be out of my life. Got a bluescreen with the Stop code 0x0000001E so I turned off the computer, unplugged the USB keyboard and mouse, and tried to turn it back on. Fans ran and everything but the screen was not on. I did the same turn everything off, unplug everything procedure as previously mentioned only I removed the stick of RAM, turned it on, and got the beeps saying it had no RAM. I re-seated the stick of RAM, plugged everything back in, and BAM! The screen had color again. No problems with it for a day and a half running it constantly (videos playing, surfing) so I felt confident giving the client his computer back. That was two days ago and he just told me he got the same exact error I just mentioned to you guys. He is going to bring it by again tomorrow morning. Would you guys please help me out in getting this issue resolved so that I can FINALLY get it out of my life? This thing has been at my house on-and-off for a month now. Any help is MUCH and GREATLY appreciated That PC is borderline for Win7...it should run...however at the site how many Win7 drivers were listed ? ?http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02110377&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=4162268&prodTypeId=12454 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01925524 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=4193721&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=4162268It came with Windows 7 64-bit and SEEMS to run fine when it isn't crashing. There were only the original drivers that came with it on the HP site. I think those were the original ones but if updated the previous ones are no longer available. Went back to the ATI 3200 driver from HP's site and worked out a few conflicts. Still running so far (fingers crossed) |

Solve : Build recommendations for Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit? |
|
Answer» I'm looking for help picking a motherboard and CPU with native support for Win 7. I'm hoping Win 7 users will be knowledgeable, and I'm especially hoping to avoid the Win 10 fanboys that troll the 'hardware' section of every forum I have posted in. For CPU I have settled on i7 (3rd to 5th generation), to avoid the tedious workarounds required to get the 'latest&greatest' components to play nice with Win 7. I'd like recommendations on the 'pick of the litter'. No idea about the motherboard, but hoping once a CPU is decided on, it will make choosing a motherboard easier. |

Solve : How to add expanable menu items to desktop context menu...? |
|
Answer» Hi all, I've been editing my desktop right click context menu items for years via HKCR\Directory\Background|Shell, but have never been able to figure out if you can ADD an EXPANDABLE menu for items. Is there a WAY to do it? Sort of like the New>Text File etc... I would like to be able to add programs to open from the menu without having a long list. I don't care for too many shortcuts on the desktop and I know how to run everything from Run or cmd, but I want to make a menu to make it easy for my wife to just right click and run something. For example I have about 10 GAMES I would like to have in a menu, Have one entry "Games" then expands to show all the available games and then have a "Programs" expandable menu as well with maybe more expandable items under it to organize the different types of programs. |

Solve : Windows SP2 and hotfix? |
|
Answer» I should be able to figure this out...but I'm a little perplexed. Do you mind if I ask why you had to slipstream SP2 yourself? It may help me out. You'll already know that the SP shows up if you open the Properties on My Computer. I found that installing SP2 on top of other programs caused instability and, as I didn't know which program, or programs, was/were causing the problem, I just decided to go for a clean install, set everything up properly, and make a clean drive image to restore with, to save me having to do it all again. Constant updates do make a mess of the theory though, but at least I can go back to a good drive image and not have to do all of the BASIC re-installing. A bit of updating and I am back in business. I wonder when we'll see SP3? Personally I would prefer if MS just released a fully updated CD, especially if any new FILES could be incorporated by simply running SFC /SCANNOW or SFC /SCANBOOT. I don't know if that would be too difficult if they allowed computer stores to have a Gold (master) CD to make copies for customers from. You sure he didn't disable/uninstall the Security Centre together with the firewall? The problem I was having with my friend's....(in all actuality...my landlord) PC was that he is given advice from several people. Although it gives him varying opinions...it's not good to have several different people helping him...especially if one is computer illiterate. He needs to find one person to take his questions to. Anyway...his problem has been resolved...thanks to you. I really do appreciate the support and the previous link. It will definitely come in handy in the future. Thanks... BTW...with the advent of Vista...I'm sure SP3 will be just around the corner...and I agree...an SP2 Cd would be sweet!Pleased to be of help to the both of you. You'll find the SP2 CD order form on one of the links. |

Solve : How often do you defragment?? |
|
Answer» I dont defrag since I dont really see the point in it.. My computer can't get any slower or faster then what it is now I defragement once in my life time and really see no diffrence gor rid of alot of fragements whatever that means..Quote Why not? This is just from personal experience...i was a Ghost user for years until Symantec ruined it. I now use Acronis True Image. I have had both images become unstable after defragging the partition they were stored on...so i just don't do it anymore. patio. which files can be considered junk files and how do they get on the hard drive?Quote Which files can be considered junk files and how do they get on the hard drive? Old .tmp , .bak , .chk , .log files, etc. which are no longer in use. Old temporary internet files and all manner of stuff including old system restore points... Click on the link below and run through the Disk Cleanup routine. Quote This is just from personal experience. I use Image for Windows and burn the compressed image to a data DVD which is bootable. Quote I don't defrag since I dont really see the point in it. You should be using defrag.exe from ME and probably a faster drive with a bigger buffer. An 8 MB buffer will run defrag four times faster than a 2 MB buffer. I have seen '98se computers crawl to the desktop with drives 90% full with 85% fragmentation struggling on 64 MB of RAM and PII processors. A good clean up, faster drive, more RAM (512 MB) and at least the type keeps up with the speed at which you press the keys. You can always use Diskeeper Lite on '98se and then you have the same defrag as XP Home and Pro. DISKEEPERLITE Quote gor rid of a lot of fragments whatever that means. I'll drink to that! Quote As I understand it a HD is made up of zillions of little elements that can be either magnetised or demagnetised thus forming the 1s & 0s that a computer uses to store/delete/overwrite information. How are you calculating the bits per byte? How many zillion per BIT? Just installed the new CCLeaner with the natty new interface. Came across this just yesterday... ...which MATCHES nicely, and might make a nice Graphical User Interface colourscheme for Vista. I didn't mention the number of bits per byte but if you feel the need to know then Google is your friend. It's just a number like 8. How many zillion what per bit? Is this a trick question? My computer with fragment files... Nothing really all that great... I don't feel a diffrence with computer speed when I defragment. Which I am not going to because it TAKES an eternity. PS my computer only has 2 RAM Slot 64MB +32 MBMight as well put the swap-file back on C: from the look of that. What is the max for the two slots? 2 x 256 MB?Yep, my computer can hold 2 slots of PC100 @ 256MB. The thing is 256MB PC100 is super expensive at store. Being very careful with things I do not own a credit card.. Maybe I can send checks? Any way im not concern with buying RAM now. Since XP home edition REQUIRES a minimum of at least 64MB and I have 92 MB. How much if a preformance can I possibly get? When I got the 32 MB RAM from a computer at school they were throwing out and I put it in I did not see any preformance diffrent at all. Well maybe a little my applications open faster... some applications I can't even open in XP because I do not meet those application requirements Will paging file C boost preformance at all? I only have it on D: Since the operating system is installed on that drive for some funny reason instead of C: C: Windows 98SE Windows 2000NT D: Windows ME Windows XP (home edition) P.S. They are not partion drives I just hit clean install when installing them.. OUCH that really took up alot of space. Looks like reformating for me..... again. Well I reformat every year anyways.. |

Solve : Windows 7 Blue Screen Of Death? |
|
Answer» i have toshiba satellite pro l850 ,using it for 9years.at the beginning did not use it for gaming and other HEAVY duties .crashing are occurred withing 1-2years after buying it.withing these 9yrs display is replaced twice. battery was dead after a year.so For 8 years In my experience, multiple and varied bsod's are generally caused by one of the following (in order of likelihood): i do use windows defender ,does it enough or should i INSTALL other AV and scan ?Defender is fine - just run a full scan. I don't really expect it to find anything. As I said, it's almost certainly a hardware failure.Quote from: Allan on April 23, 2021, 05:32:47 AM Defender is fine - just run a full scan. I don't really expect it to find anything. As I said, it's almost certainly a hardware failure. so you mean there is no option other than buying new one? if it is motherboard failure? If you mean a new MOBO then yes, you have to buy and replace the motherboard. If you go that route, just make sure to purchase it from a retailer who will ACCEPT a return just in case that's not the problem.1st thing i would do is borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...you will know overnite.Quote from: Allan on April 23, 2021, 06:55:31 AM If you mean a new mobo then yes, you have to buy and replace the motherboard. If you go that route, just make sure to purchase it from a retailer who will accept a return just in case that's not the problem. as you said ,Av scanning found something.unfortunately sudden power cut wasted hours of scanning .. When HD sentinel says the drive has weak sectors and is 95% healthy and it is a laptop Hitachi hard drive it's time to replace it. Or to at least get a good backup. The free version of HD sentinel doesn't have surface check available you can get around this by leaving the program open and running windows chkdsk and using HD sentinel to graph the DISK access if there is slow access or dips in speed this is another reason to replace the drive. anyone know how to find real reason behind these crashing ?Quote anyone know how to find real reason behind these crashing ? Only deterministic, predictable, and consistent crashes have some "real reason" that can be determined directly. Your BSODs are completely arbitrary, in seemingly random drivers with equally random errors. For a start though, the system is infected. Aside from what was detected, who knows if there is malware that isn't. Solve : Unable to install........? |
|
Answer» Hi, I'm having trouble installing some things on my computer. I first noticed the problem when I was unable to open my Norton 360. When I clicked on it nothing happened. I DELETED it and tried to reinstall it and I got the ERROR message "c:\windows\system32\d3d10_1core.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error." This same message also comes up when I try to install other things such as Flash updates. Since I couldn't use my Norton I installed AVG 2013 Free version with no problems and I scanned my entire computer. It said that I had a trojan and it deleted it. I have also used Malwarebytes, CCleaner, and RegZooka to check for issues on my PC. At this point everything is coming back clean, but this error message still comes up if I try to install certain things. I use an ASUS K50IJ and I never made my recovery dvd through AI Recovery because ONE was given with the laptop, but I couldn't find the disk. I went to make the recovery disk and once again I was unable to complete this task (I've since found the recovery disk). My laptop is working on the surface, but when I try to make some important changes this error message SHOWS up. When I follow the file path I see that the file is in the system32 folder, but maybe it is a fake one and the real one was replaced by this virus. Should I delete it? How do I fix this? I've read other POSTS, but its hard to pin point how it applies to my issues.I would try booting the computer in safe mode with networking, then running the command line, and running this command: sfc /scannow |

Solve : Windows Won't Boot With External HDD Connected? |
|
Answer» With my WD MyBook External HDD connected and powered on, the system won't boot into Windows. Why would you want the external hdd connected all the time? The drive contains all my work stuffs. Windows is on internal SSD. Personal stuffs on internal HDDs. I don't usually turn off my computer, but once a while when I do, I have to make sure the external drive is power off upon booting, and turn them back on LATER. No BIG deal but I was told it was not suppose to be necessary, i.e. Windows is suppose to boot even with the HDD connected and powered on. Just wonder if there is some settings about it. |

Solve : (BOOTMGR is missing)? |

Answer» I've been getting the error (BOOTMGR is missing) I tried everything but nothing WORKS for me. I'm using a HP desktop PC, I tried to upgrade to a bigger drive and then I started to get this error, so I put my old drive back in and the same error (( Please help, Frank Is this XP or Vista ? ?HP PC and I'm running win 7 ultimateSince you put your original post in the DOS forum I had to guess, and moved it to the XP forum. I'll now MOVE it to the Windows 7 forum. Please try to post in the correct forum in the future. Thank you.Exactly HOW did you upgrade to a larger drive?Quote from: Allan on July 18, 2013, 04:18:10 PM Exactly HOW did you upgrade to a larger drive? It sounds to me that he probably used a Disk Manager program and after the migration of the system to a larger HDD, used the program to DELETE the 100mb boot partition, thus deleting the MFT and MBR. In this case his only hope is that he saved the smaller HDD and can MIGRATE it to the larger HDD again. If my guess is correct the 100mb (give or take) partition is fine. Just leave it alone next time around.Quote from: SuperTweaker on July 18, 2013, 09:20:03 PM In this case his only hope is that he saved the smaller HDD and can migrate it to the larger HDD again. Quote so I put my old drive back in and the same error D'oh!Quote from: foxidrive on July 19, 2013, 04:02:02 AM D'oh! Couldn't agree with you more. So now the obvious question. Did you make a Windows 7 boot disk through the Backup and Restore app? If so, boot to that disk, let Windows files load and choose to repair Startup.I got to a Command Prompt and typed in (Bootrec /fixboot) it seemed to fix the problem. Solve : One for the geeks how to edit system configuration? |
|
Answer» When you tick selective STARTUP where is the infornation stored. I will explain why I am asking. TRYING to speed up my son's dell studio 1555 laptop I went into system configuration to begin disabling startup ITEMS. I noticed the selective startup was ticked and it was not using the normal boot. I innocently selected start normally, apply and restart. The laptop says it can't find the boot device. On ENQUIRING it TURNS out something had screwed up the boot command and that was how he fixed it. I can access the drive via an external caddy and was wondering if there was a way of accessing the system configuration settings when the disk is not the primary and not one used to boot the laptop. I am using an older smaller drive that we replaced for the larger one so it us in the same laptop. Keen to see if it's possible as I know it's just unchecking tgat selection that will allow the drive to work on the pc. Therafter I can copy the dive for backup and go about rebuilding the correct boot command |

Solve : Pagefile remains in drive after set to no paging file? |
|
Answer» I set my pagefile to be System managed on E: drive, but there are still a 13.4 GB pagefile.sys on C: and another 7.96 GB pagefile.sys on E:. Click on C: drive, put a tick in "No paging file", click on SETDid that. And just DONE again to confirm. Restarted. The pagefile in C still remains there.Quote from: patio on July 27, 2021, 05:00:24 PM Also by that clip your settings are not what you think they are...Then what or how should it be? I've set "No paging file" for all other drives except E:.From what I recall, Windows doesn't delete the pagefile.sys file(s) automatically. After you set the new paging file settings, you need to reboot (paging file changes do not take effect until you reboot!), then you have to delete it yourself.Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 27, 2021, 09:47:50 PM From what I recall, Windows doesn't delete the pagefile.sys file(s) automatically. After you set the new paging file settings, you need to reboot (paging file changes do not take effect until you reboot!), then you have to delete it yourself.I've tried to google this before posting the thread. From what I read, when "No paging file" is set, the page file created before should be gone after reboot. And when that doesn't happen, some said it's ok to delete it manually, some said no as it may mess thing up. So I'm not sure if it's actually SAFE to delete the one in C:. There will always be a small pagefile on c: drive regardless of your settings, but it should not be that large if you have set it for "none". And yes, you can try to delete it yourself - it won't do any damage though you may not be able to do it. Again, if after a reboot it's small, leave it be.OK so I've deleted the page file in C and reboot. There is no new page file created in C, leaving the only page file in E. We'll SEE if all go well. Cheers. There is likely a swapfile on c: (which, in my opinion, is nothing more than a small pagefile with a specific purpose). Regardless, it will be very small (it's required by the OS). |

I knocked the power cable, computer lost power and now it won't boot. I think the process of copying windows files must have corrupted them on my hdd. |

Solve : Random Screen Freezing - Please Help, been troubleshooting for a month...? |
|
Answer» Hello,
Now here is where the really ANNOYING part begins. I can run all high end games on Ultra High with my specs (listed below) for hours on end, even overnight and not have a single issue. And randomly I’ll have mini freezes in game rarely. I can even browse Reddit and the internet for hours, but if I leave for an hour with my machine on and come back, it’ll freeze indefinitely when I click on anything. As for which things I have tested/troubleshoot:
So now my biggest dilemma comes into play. I have no funds to buy or afford new/old Computer Parts to troubleshoot the hardware. I have enough funds to buy 1 thing MAYBE and test it. So I need help determining what the issue would be BEFORE I buy any hardware and test it. Computer Specs: 4+ year old Gaming computer. Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit SP1 AMD FX-8120 Zambezi (8-core processor) – 19 Degrees Celsius Average 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668Mhz AsusTek Computer Sabertooth 990FX Motherboard – 38 Degrees Celsius Average Asus VS247 Monitor (Primary) Asus VE228 Monitor (Secondary) 1024MB Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti (MSI) – 39 Degrees Celsius Average 1TB Samsung HD103SJ Hard Drive Other noted information I have discovered is that I can hear clicking sounds coming from my video card, but that might be from me cleaning it fairly soon, although this issue has been happening for a month now. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]What are your Temps ? ?I have seen MANY different event viewer errors from Hard Disk to Video Drivers to MSE Software, etc. It usually is 1 minute after the freezes though, so they are not the core issues as I have troubleshooted each of them. As for re-installing, I've done that 3 times. Heating and Fan has been mounted correctly since the machine was built, the low temp is normal as I have a heavy duty cpu fan. I might have someone available to lend me an older machine with some hardware. If I can troubleshoot hardware, how should I go about it? Should I REMOVE one RAM stick at a time and see if it improves my issue before trying new pieces of hardware? Also, if the RAM doesn't change a thing, should I first TRY and put in new/other RAM before I try to test my graphics card, or does it not matter which route I take? Also, below I linked my CoreTemp and Video Test Those are with no load...you need to check them under load. But this occurs even when it's just sitting there... I don't understand how it being under a load would affect it as well when this HAPPENS whether it's under a heavy load or just sitting idle.Because under load temps will increase...Go to Power Options and make certain "Hibernate" is disabled. Solve : power help? |

Answer» I have the Motherboard Diver I got fromn the ECS website so I know this is up to date. And my Mouse and Keyboard I let Win7. just install the Ganaric Drivers. I save and re boot and at Desktop I go to start Sleep and system goes down and I move Mouse and never comes back till I tap Power BottunSo, do you mean to say the computer goes into Sleep mode or is it actually going into hibernation? Seems like the latter. But, you should be able to tell by the computer's behavior. Going into hibernation takes longer than going into sleep mode because hibernation saves an image on of the STATE prior to shutdown and powers off completely while going into sleep mode takes less since an image is not saved to the hard drive and some power remains to retain the computer state in memory. Similarly, coming out of hibernation takes longer than coming out of sleep mode and involves much more hard drive ACTIVITY since the image created upon hibernating must be read to restore the system to the state it was in just before hibernating. I don't know if this works with hibernation, but I know this solution works for normal sleep. Click start orb -> devmgmt.msc -> press enter Look for your mouse (most likely under "Human Interface Devices") Expand that section Right click on the item that appears to be your mouse -> properties -> power management Check "Allow this device to bring the comp out of standby" Press OK Problem should be solved. |

Solve : Windows XP? |
|
Answer» I have officially left the past. I upgraded my computer from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Home Edition (SP1). I didn't EVEN know it WOULD run on a 200MHz Pentium Pro. It runs quite nicely (I have 144MB of RAM), but I am a little bit lacking in the hard drive department. It uses over half of my hard drive. I compressed it and I gained a little space, but you can't do much with 2.3GB. I have a question: can I assign my Tandberg TDC-4222 SCSI tape drive to a drive letter and use it like any removable media? If so, how do I do it? Also, can I make my computer any faster? Thanks. ... It runs quite nicely (I have 144MB of RAM), but I am a little bit lacking in the hard drive department. It uses over half of my hard drive. I compressed it and I gained a little space, but you can't do much with 2.3GB. ... John: This is unrelated to your question, but if your hard drive is less than 3 GB in size, it's not much good for using Windows XP. You should *not* compress any operating system files (such as the Windows folder and its subfolders). If you have converted the hard drive from FAT to NTFS, you may uncompress the drive and then compress individual folders, instead. You may want to install a second hard drive (even a used one as small as 4 GB) and install all your programs to that drive. You may even want to move your My Documents folder and pagefile to the second hard drive. You may even be able to buy several used SCSI hard drives really cheap and store everything but your operating system on those drives. Just make sure to properly terminate the SCSI adaptor and the last device on the internal SCSI chain or you may damage them. If you have both internal and external devices connected to the SCSI adapter, be sure to terminate the last device on the internal chain and the last device on the external chain to avoid damage to the devices. Best regards, Doc I did a some thinking and here's what I came up with: I've been using Windows XP for the past 5 days and it was great, but the amount of disk space it used and the way it slowed down my computer wasn't worth it. I decided to install Windows MILLENNIUM Edition. Now, before you say something mean about ME, it works fine on my computer and I have had NO trouble with it. I don't think it's as evil as everyone SAYS it is. I'm happy with it, and that's all that matters, right? Maybe if I get a faster computer with a bigger hard drive, I would install XP on that computer, but for right now, ME is fine. Thanks. -JohnQuote Shashank J. Bhagwat POST HIJACKER ........ Solve : Unzipping download? |

Answer» I have a 2 month OLD computer running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and I'm having a problem unzipping 7zip files. I have downloaded 7zip but it still won't unzip the files. I keep getting error messages. "Error: VAULT_HandymanAtWork_GA_MRR76191.7z is not supported archive. I have tried DOWNLOADING the file several times to no avail. Please HELP, if possible. Thank youQuote from: hughii on July 16, 2013, 10:53:04 AM I have a 2 month old computer running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and I'm having a problem unzipping 7zip files. I have downloaded 7zip but it still won't unzip the files. I keep getting error messages. "Error: VAULT_HandymanAtWork_GA_MRR76191.7z is not supported archive. I have tried downloading the file several times to no avail. Please help, if possible. Thank youYou said you downloaded 7zip, but you did not say if you installed 7zip.Yes I installed 7zip So what happens when you run it then ? ? It may be a bad zip file...there's always that possibility...I would uninstall 7zip and use Windows Compressed Folders to extract zipped files. Also, Compressed Folders are easy to use by adding all your content to want to email or upload to a standard folder, right click that folder and choose Compressed Folder. Now you have a legacy zip file which can be EASILY opened by a recipient. If you are going with 7ip for encryption reasons, that's another story. If you're determined to use 7zip then uninstall it, go to Organize on the Toolbar, choose Folder and Search Options, unhide (hidden files and folders). Then visually search Program Files (x86), Program Files, User Accounts (your account) AppData, Roaming/Local folders for any remnants of 7zip. Run CCleaner both cleaner and registry cleaner. Reboot your system and run CCleaner again. After it's cleaned-up everything Reinstall 7zip. Make sure when you install 7zip. Let us know how it turns out. |

Solve : Task Manager? |
|
Answer» Hi, Even if you don't have those Close, Minimize and Maximize Buttons in the window, you can always right-click on the app in the taskbar and close it. Of COURSE the primary problem when in the small footprint mode is not the accessibility of the non-client area (caption buttons) but rather the fact that you cannot switch tabs, there is no menu, and in general unless you know what you did, you've suddenly made task manager about a tenth as useful. |
