Solve : Blue Screen (Win7HomePrem64bit) on HP TouchSmart 300-1223 (All-in-one)?

Answer»

OK I have been having problems trying to get a client's computer fixed. It is an HP TouchSmart 300-1223 which is an all-in-one. First it was viruses. I got rid of 54 of them. Then the hard drive was bad. Just swapped it out and put a brand new install of Windows7 64-bit Home Premium. Did all of the updates. Official drivers. I even put a 4 gig stick of RAM in there instead of the 2 gig stick that ended up in there somehow. RAM was tested and working BTW. Ran like a rocket ship compared to before! Then I was testing to make sure everything was good to go so I could give this guy his computer back and it would be out of my life. Got a bluescreen with the Stop code 0x0000001E so I turned off the computer, unplugged the USB keyboard and mouse, and tried to turn it back on. Fans ran and everything but the screen was not on. I did the same turn everything off, unplug everything procedure as previously mentioned only I removed the stick of RAM, turned it on, and got the beeps saying it had no RAM. I re-seated the stick of RAM, plugged everything back in, and BAM! The screen had color again. No problems with it for a day and a half running it constantly (videos playing, surfing) so I felt confident giving the client his computer back. That was two days ago and he just told me he got the same exact error I just mentioned to you guys. He is going to bring it by again tomorrow morning. Would you guys please help me out in getting this issue resolved so that I can FINALLY get it out of my life? This thing has been at my house on-and-off for a month now. Any help is MUCH and GREATLY appreciated

(RAM is good, Hard drive is brand new, brand new installation of Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium and has been authenticated, did all possible updates) (I have no idea how to tell but I kind of think this is a video driver or power supply issue. I installed the Windows7 64-bit video driver from HP's site just in case anyone was curious and thinks that could be the issue)

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]That PC is borderline for WIN7...it should run...however at the site how many Win7 drivers were listed ? ?
If it were me i'd DLoad and re-install ALL of them.
Chipset drivers 1st then re-boot.
I downloaded all of them from their website including the the chipset driver (installed first) then BIOS update, etc. There is only one option on their website for each driver when I input my model and OS and if I am not mistaken, the video-driver is some sort of auto-detect the best driver EXE. Don't remember if that was HP's or ATI's installer but it is used for ATI 3200 and 4200 series graphics. If that helps any.General rule of thumb with Laptops/netbooks etc...always use the laptop manuf. drivers...not ATI/Nvidias.OK so I have the computer back and attached are dump files and BSOD information taken from this computer - http://www.filetolink.com/0fb83c5bdc

There were only the original drivers that came with it on the HP site. I think those were the original ones but if updated the previous ones are no longer available. Went back to the ATI 3200 driver from HP's site and worked out a few conflicts. Still running so far (fingers crossed)

Solve : I'm having some computer problems. Can someone assist me please??

Answer»

Here are my problems that I have with my computer. Everytime I try to play a video, I get the video but there's no sound. Its like watching tv with the mute button on. It says that there is no device installed and I have a red x where the volume is. I have tried everything and at my wit's end!!!

Also, It wouldnt turn on and I wouldnt be able to get onto the INTERNET. Sometimes it would eventually turn after about 10 MINS. or 15 mins. or 30 mins. Then yesterday MORNING I tried to turn on my computer, it wouldn't turn on. I tried everything.

I unplugged the modem, unplugged the ethernet, the cable that was on the back of the modem, unplugged my monitor, unplugged my keyboard etc., etc. I must have called Comcast about 6 or 7 times in the past day and a half. Finally, at about 5 pm today, my computer finally turned on and was able to access the internet. Don't ask me how my computer finally turned on because I don't know.

I'll give you some information about my computer.

S/N- PTS880X0407390217C2700

SNID-73900857227 [edited for privacy]

Model/Aspire- M3100

There's also other numbers that are on here. M3100 AM3100-U3201A

One more thing, my computer doesn't look right. The font and the colors of my computer are not what they were before and it seems like there windows basic or windows standard which is what I dont want.

Can someone assist me with all or any of these problems? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
What operating system and is it a newly installed? Try installing the Audio driver and most likely the chipset and video. Its not newly installed. I've had the computer for 5 YRS. I've tried installing the audio driver but it didnt work. You may have gotten a new driver installed from Windows Updates. Go into your Hardware/Devices/Sound and Video and Game Controllers. Right click your audio device and choose Properties. On the next box click the tab "Driver". Choose to Roll Back that driver.

Also, before doing all this just make sure your speakers are plugged in and powered on. Sometimes it's the simplest things that slip past you. Thank you for your help. I would've responded sooner but my computer froze on Wednesday night and couldn't get on yesterday and most of today.

Windows update doesn't work for me for some reason. I don't know what else to do?

I already looked at the audio devices and drivers and stuff and it doesn't seem like I installed right. Because when I try to install it and restart my computer it says that the driver isn't installed. Bottom line, is that I still have no sound. I've had this problem before, and when I did, another thing that I had a problem with was the network. The Network Location Awareness service wouldn't start due to some internal error or another. I read online to try to use the command Code: [Select]sfc /scannow in an elevated command line. This is what fixed it, and I realized that it had to be due to shutting the PC off without shutting down the computer. I'd give this a try if you haven't already.
Another thing to try is uninstalling all the audio and graphics drivers and then manually installing them.

I'm running Win 7 Home EDITION and have a very strange driver ERROR. (I did have Win 7 Professional but a repair shop downgraded me.)

I have recovery DISKS for WINDOWS 7 Professional, 4 disks include applications and drivers. Can I run them and restore my computer?

Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Jak

You should be able to load the drivers from the Driver/Utility disk. You can restore from the recovery disk set .
If you could give the MODEL of computer I could link you to the instructions of how to do the recovery. What is the error?

Solve : "Another instance of setup is already running"?

Answer»

I run Testking software when I click the install prompt it flags an error and says "Another instance of SETUP is already running". I try it again to kill the duplicate process in the Task manager processes.

When I killed the duplicate process it flagged another error that said "Failed to write in file "C:\Users\George\AppData\Roaming\Testking\Testking Q and A for PMP PMP Demo\install\PMPDEMO.msi". Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

I tried to run it in safemode but it said the Windows Installer was not available. My machine is Windows 7. Please I already tried to reboot (a COLD reboot and waited 20 seconds). I also tried to run the machine in Selective Mode but could not make it load without "STARTUP ITEMS". I am not so experienced with computers.

What do I do?
Please do not post the same question more than once. I deleted the duplicate.

Solve : Build recommendations for Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit?

Answer»

I'm looking for help picking a motherboard and CPU with native support for Win 7. I'm hoping Win 7 users will be knowledgeable, and I'm especially hoping to avoid the Win 10 fanboys that troll the 'hardware' section of every forum I have posted in. For CPU I have settled on i7 (3rd to 5th generation), to avoid the tedious workarounds required to get the 'latest&greatest' components to play nice with Win 7. I'd like recommendations on the 'pick of the litter'. No idea about the motherboard, but hoping once a CPU is decided on, it will make choosing a motherboard easier.

The BUILD will be for surfing the net, streaming movies from SITES like putlockers, possible video encoding/editing, Photoshop or GIMP use, Microsoft WORD, and Linux LiveCD sessions. I don't do gaming, torrents, and so on.Hi Vetal,
If you look at my computer specs for computer #1 I can recommend the Mobo & CPU from this computer as good candidates for your needs. Though I'm running Win 10 now, this computer came with Win 7 Home Premium when I PURCHASED it in 2013. It has run without any problems for nearly 8 years. There are plenty of used & new P8H61-M PRO Mobos for sale on Ebay. I hesitate to recommend a Graphics card as this computer did not COME with one.
I hope this helps you in your search. Thanks for your reply. Since posting I have done further research, and have decided on i7-4790k CPU, as it appears to be the best one with native Win 7 support. I did not want to go through all the workarounds required to get current parts to function, so I have decided on a legacy build. The motherboards I'm looking into are:
MSI Z97 Gaming 5
MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming
MSI Z97-GD65 Gaming
MSI Z97-G45
MSI Z97A Gaming 6

The graphics cards will likely be harder to pick, as I require a VGA port. So far, these are the only ones I have been able to find:
ASUS GeForce GTX 750
Palit GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Solve : How to add expanable menu items to desktop context menu...?

Answer»

Hi all, I've been editing my desktop right click context menu items for years via HKCR\Directory\Background|Shell, but have never been able to figure out if you can ADD an EXPANDABLE menu for items. Is there a WAY to do it? Sort of like the New>Text File etc... I would like to be able to add programs to open from the menu without having a long list. I don't care for too many shortcuts on the desktop and I know how to run everything from Run or cmd, but I want to make a menu to make it easy for my wife to just right click and run something. For example I have about 10 GAMES I would like to have in a menu, Have one entry "Games" then expands to show all the available games and then have a "Programs" expandable menu as well with maybe more expandable items under it to organize the different types of programs.

I know it doesn't really matter much, but I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. This would require a custom Shell Extension.

I found a tool called simply "Context Menu" that appears to provide functionality that might work for you.Context Menu Editor still works real well...you may have to hunt for the Free VERSION however...OK thanks guys I figured there was probably a program, but I was hoping I could do it myself without 3rd party programs lol I'm used to doing things manually. I'll check out what you guys mentioned... Appreciate your help!!!

Solve : File associations?

Answer»

Hi, all,

I hope some of you can help me with a problem I'm having. Bear in mind that I'm a user, not a tech person. With that said, I'm usually pretty good at fixing things, as long as the instructions are step-by-step and none of the steps are missing (sometimes people who know the stuff well LEAVE out a step that is obvious to them, but to those of us who are not techies, it's not obvious). Thank you!

I have Windows 7 Professional and Microsoft Office 2003.

Most of what I do for work is: heavy internet use for information research, heavy email use, copying/pasting internet links in the emails so the readers of the emails can go to those web pages, moderate Word use, light Excel use. Here is the problem:

1. As of approx. 6 months ago, when I receive gmail emails with a Word document attached that has a docx extension, when I click on the attached document, the page that opens SAYS google doc. When I click on the download icon, it opens up in Wordpad.

2. As of approx. 4 months ago, when I receive gmail emails with an Excel document attached that has an xlsx extension, when I click on the attached document, at the top of the screen, it says (this is just an example of one such document): https://mail.google.com/mail (with a string of other numbers and LETTERS behind it).

When I click on the download icon, the Word program opens, followed by a small box with gibberish characters in it.

3. Up until early this morning, I was able to open pdf documents directly from a website. Mid-morning today, they were not opening up. At the bottom of my screen tabs were appearing, but when I CLICKED on the tabs, the document would not appear - just more tabs would show up at the bottom. I also can't open them when attached to gmail or yahoo email.

This is VERY weird! I was able to open Word and Excel documents just fine previously, as well as pdf.

Thanks again!

Solve : Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1 keeps on crashing?

Answer»

Anyone i need your help with my vaio laptop. my laptop keeps on crashing. INSTALLED with windows 7 ultimate 64bit sp1. anyone help pls..This is a pretty common and general question which could have a lot of causes.
Can you download Speccy from here https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download

After you run it go file , publish snap shot and copy the url in your next post.

Then run https://www.hdsentinel.com/

Use the windows snipping tool to copy the temperature screen and first screen here.
Do you have a backup of the laptop ?thank you for responding to my concern i'll do this procedure now.
here's the url,
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/T6w5kjOJTx4snDwsq3pYFNbHi a few things,

Windows 7 isn't up to date and updates are failing to install. There is a fix for updates not installing.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/sbs/windows/fix-windows-update-errors-18b693b5-7818-5825-8a7e-2a4a37d6d787

You have Driver Booster, running may be a Good idea to remove with add remove programs.
There is also PANDA Anti Virus USB installed it would be an Idea to un install that and download a copy of Panda dome and run a FULL scan for virus's.
Also the Sony laptop has a 9 1/2 year old Hitachi hard drive. The Speccy report shows health as OK but I would like a report from HDsentinal please.
Even if it checks out OK with HD sentinel a drive of that age should be replaced. Your laptop supports SSD speeds so I suggest you install a Crucial MX500 500GB 2.5 inch SSD or a Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SSD. A computer shop should be able to transfer your old hard drive to the SSD. Thankyou for the 2 reports which show the drive is OK at the moment I think you would see a worth while IMPROVEMENT in speed installing the SSD drive. forgive me, i don't UNDERSTAND. you are saying i have to replace my hard drive? or just install a program? You don't have to replace the hard drive it was a suggestion.
Have you removed the 2 programs Driver Boaster and Panda USB ?
Also have you run a virus scan ?

Solve : Windows SP2 and hotfix?

Answer»

I should be able to figure this out...but I'm a little perplexed.

While working on a friend's PC...I came across the following:

1) SP2 is installed on his system running XP Pro, the install is shown in his Add/Remove Programs, however, the Security icon and the Firewall icon are not visible in Control Panel.

2) Windows Security Update KB835732 is also installed, however Automatic Updates wants to continually download this security patch.

3) He uses Norton Corporate Edition and was able to connect...run Live Update and perform a full system scan with no infections found.

4) He uses Spy Sweeper from WebRoot and was also able to update the program and run full system scan with no infections found.

5) Able to connect to the Windows Update site with just the glitch described above.

6) No other visible forms of malware present.

Everything on the system appears to be working fine. No connectivity issues. No apparent browser hijackers or adware. I'm stymied.

Any suggestions? Or should I just uninstall the above mentioned updates and try again or run HiJack This or another spyware program?

Savioursorry cant help......use win9x/linux....Thanx Merlin_2...

I'll PASS that on to him.

Saviourmaybe you know the answer to his woes.?I'm the one who submitted it...forgot to login...lol.Twin poster.........did your pc run ok before sp2 was installed......Not my PC...a friend's. Anyway, he was having connection issues. Trobleshooted a bad cable modem. Replaced it. Everything else is running fine except for those two issues.

His initial complaint was that his browser could not display pages. I fixed that issue when the modem was replaced. Like I said...everything seems to be running fine.you may need to talk more to your friend ,who has this problem.......and find out more..imhaoIs this an OEM install or does he have an XP Professional CD? What make and model of computer does he have?

If he has the XP Pro CD he should slipstream SP2 and do a clean install.

I had to.

Then he should be able to see what goes wrong when he adds his other software.

Click on the link at the foot of this post for more.Mac...

He has a Dell (model unknown)...about 6 years old and the OS was installed by someone else.

I'll give the software a try to see if it works. Thanks for the link.

After a little more digging into his problem...and finally getting to look at his PC again...SP2 is not showing up in his Control Panel...there is a hotfix for SP2 there though.

I don't have his PC with me now, so I'll have to get back to you if you need additional info.

I'm a little curios as to what caused it though and for the life of me ...can't figure it out. The guy who was working on it before me stated he had installed SP2. Could've fooled me.

Do you mind if I ask why you had to slipstream SP2 yourself? It may help me out.

Thanks, again, Mac!Quote

Thanks, again, Mac!

You'll already know that the SP shows up if you open the Properties on My Computer.

I found that installing SP2 on top of other programs caused instability and, as I didn't know which program, or programs, was/were causing the problem, I just decided to go for a clean install, set everything up properly, and make a clean drive image to restore with, to save me having to do it all again.

Constant updates do make a mess of the theory though, but at least I can go back to a good drive image and not have to do all of the BASIC re-installing.

A bit of updating and I am back in business.

I wonder when we'll see SP3?

Personally I would prefer if MS just released a fully updated CD, especially if any new FILES could be incorporated by simply running SFC /SCANNOW or SFC /SCANBOOT.

I don't know if that would be too difficult if they allowed computer stores to have a Gold (master) CD to make copies for customers from.

You sure he didn't disable/uninstall the Security Centre together with the firewall? The problem I was having with my friend's....(in all actuality...my landlord) PC was that he is given advice from several people. Although it gives him varying opinions...it's not good to have several different people helping him...especially if one is computer illiterate.

He needs to find one person to take his questions to.

Anyway...his problem has been resolved...thanks to you. I really do appreciate the support and the previous link. It will definitely come in handy in the future.

Thanks...

BTW...with the advent of Vista...I'm sure SP3 will be just around the corner...and I agree...an SP2 Cd would be sweet!Pleased to be of help to the both of you.

You'll find the SP2 CD order form on one of the links.

Old .tmp , .bak , .chk , .log files, etc. which are no longer in use.

Old temporary internet files and all manner of stuff including old system restore points...

Click on the link below and run through the Disk Cleanup routine.

You should be using defrag.exe from ME and probably a faster drive with a bigger buffer. An 8 MB buffer will run defrag four times faster than a 2 MB buffer.

I have seen '98se computers crawl to the desktop with drives 90% full with 85% fragmentation struggling on 64 MB of RAM and PII processors.

A good clean up, faster drive, more RAM (512 MB) and at least the type keeps up with the speed at which you press the keys.

You can always use Diskeeper Lite on '98se and then you have the same defrag as XP Home and Pro.

DISKEEPERLITE

As I understand it a HD is made up of zillions of little elements that can be either magnetised or demagnetised thus forming the 1s & 0s that a computer uses to store/delete/overwrite information.

I read that over time these little elements can loose their magnetism and consequently the information can be corrupted.

In effect defrag reads each element & rewrites it, resulting in a freshly magnetised or demagnetised element.

That all SORT of sounds feasible but I can't say I know it from 1st hand experience.

If that's how it works then defragging is more that just shuffling things around.

Any thoughts?

How are you calculating the bits per byte?

How many zillion per BIT?

Just installed the new CCLeaner with the natty new interface.

Came across this just yesterday...

...which MATCHES nicely, and might make a nice Graphical User Interface colourscheme for Vista.

I didn't mention the number of bits per byte but if you feel the need to know then Google is your friend.
It's just a number like 8.

How many zillion what per bit?

Is this a trick question?

My computer with fragment files... Nothing really all that great... I don't feel a diffrence with computer speed when I defragment. Which I am not going to because it TAKES an eternity. PS my computer only has 2 RAM Slot
64MB +32 MBMight as well put the swap-file back on C: from the look of that.

What is the max for the two slots? 2 x 256 MB?Yep, my computer can hold 2 slots of PC100 @ 256MB. The thing is 256MB PC100 is super expensive at store. Being very careful with things I do not own a credit card.. Maybe I can send checks? Any way im not concern with buying RAM now. Since XP home edition REQUIRES a minimum of at least 64MB and I have 92 MB. How much if a preformance can I possibly get? When I got the 32 MB RAM from a computer at school they were throwing out and I put it in I did not see any preformance diffrent at all. Well maybe a little my applications open faster... some applications I can't even open in XP because I do not meet those application requirements

Will paging file C boost preformance at all? I only have it on D: Since the operating system is installed on that drive for some funny reason instead of C:

C:
Windows 98SE
Windows 2000NT

D:
Windows ME
Windows XP (home edition)

P.S. They are not partion drives I just hit clean install when installing them.. OUCH that really took up alot of space. Looks like reformating for me..... again. Well I reformat every year anyways..

i do use windows defender ,does it enough or should i INSTALL other AV and scan ?Defender is fine - just run a full scan. I don't really expect it to find anything. As I said, it's almost certainly a hardware failure.Quote from: Allan on April 23, 2021, 05:32:47 AM

so you mean there is no option other than buying new one? if it is motherboard failure? If you mean a new MOBO then yes, you have to buy and replace the motherboard. If you go that route, just make sure to purchase it from a retailer who will ACCEPT a return just in case that's not the problem.1st thing i would do is borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...you will know overnite.Quote from: Allan on April 23, 2021, 06:55:31 AM

as you said ,Av scanning found something.unfortunately sudden power cut wasted hours of scanning .. When HD sentinel says the drive has weak sectors and is 95% healthy and it is a laptop Hitachi hard drive it's time to replace it. Or to at least get a good backup.
The free version of HD sentinel doesn't have surface check available you can get around this by leaving the program open and running windows chkdsk and using HD sentinel to graph the DISK access if there is slow access or dips in speed this is another reason to replace the drive.
anyone know how to find real reason behind these crashing ?Quote
anyone know how to find real reason behind these crashing ?

Only deterministic, predictable, and consistent crashes have some "real reason" that can be determined directly. Your BSODs are completely arbitrary, in seemingly random drivers with equally random errors.

For a start though, the system is infected. Aside from what was detected, who knows if there is malware that isn't.

Solve : partition table all wrong?

Answer»
I Have an Acer x1930 with win7 home premium 64bit
I cannot boot it up
it keeps saying reboot and select proper bootdevice
in bios boot is marked X and there is something called efi device as first boot (what is that?) SOMEBODY has tampered with my machine.
If the machine is still under WARRANTY you should contact the vendor of maker of the computer. It just might be some kind of failure.
Why do you think somebody tampered with your computer? It takes more than a little bit of messing AROUND to stop a PC from booting - unless the PERSON did nit on purpose - and not by ACCIDENT.
Does the HDD show up in the BIOS ? ?

Solve : ADMINISTRATION?

Answer»

Hello to all of you forum users.
I am new to this site and am in need of some help.
Noticing that my computer was being used by several people I DECIDED to try to make myself the SOLE ADMINISTRATOR.
Unfortunately, I got it badly WRONG and succeeded in locking myself out.
I get messages saying ' Insufficient Permission' when I try and access email attachments and I cannot reach my C Drive.
This all seems to be PART of my loss of administrative status.
I feel that my computer can be fundamentally re-set so that I have control again but I do not know how.

I wonder if,please, any of you can suggest what I should do ?
Salutations to you all

Sam

Solve : Unable to install........?

Answer»

Hi, I'm having trouble installing some things on my computer. I first noticed the problem when I was unable to open my Norton 360. When I clicked on it nothing happened. I DELETED it and tried to reinstall it and I got the ERROR message "c:\windows\system32\d3d10_1core.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error." This same message also comes up when I try to install other things such as Flash updates. Since I couldn't use my Norton I installed AVG 2013 Free version with no problems and I scanned my entire computer. It said that I had a trojan and it deleted it. I have also used Malwarebytes, CCleaner, and RegZooka to check for issues on my PC. At this point everything is coming back clean, but this error message still comes up if I try to install certain things. I use an ASUS K50IJ and I never made my recovery dvd through AI Recovery because ONE was given with the laptop, but I couldn't find the disk. I went to make the recovery disk and once again I was unable to complete this task (I've since found the recovery disk). My laptop is working on the surface, but when I try to make some important changes this error message SHOWS up. When I follow the file path I see that the file is in the system32 folder, but maybe it is a fake one and the real one was replaced by this virus. Should I delete it? How do I fix this? I've read other POSTS, but its hard to pin point how it applies to my issues.I would try booting the computer in safe mode with networking, then running the command line, and running this command: sfc /scannow

This will scan all the files necessary for the computer and attempt to repair broken files. If it cant, it will at least tell you a more specific reason to the problem.

I hope this helps you It can be a kind of malware attack. It disables your AV program and takes control.
You may want to post in the virus removal section.

Solve : Windows Won't Boot With External HDD Connected?

Answer»

With my WD MyBook External HDD connected and powered on, the system won't boot into Windows.

I have read that it might have something to do with a setting in BIOS regarding booting from USB devices, but I can't FIND such setting in BIOS.Nobody replies. Let me have a simple word.
Just let it be. Turn on the HDD after boot up.
Not a joke. GEEK - we are so happy to see you back!!! I sent you several emails and I know Patio also tried to reach out to you. We've missed you. Is EVERYTHING okay?Welcome home Geek...Why would you want the external hdd connected all the time?I think he installed Win on the external and WONDERS why it don't work...it ain't gonna.Quote from: SuperDave on June 13, 2021, 05:47:41 PM

Why would you want the external hdd connected all the time?
The drive contains all my work stuffs.
Windows is on internal SSD.
Personal stuffs on internal HDDs.

I don't usually turn off my computer, but once a while when I do, I have to make sure the external drive is power off upon booting, and turn them back on LATER. No BIG deal but I was told it was not suppose to be necessary, i.e. Windows is suppose to boot even with the HDD connected and powered on. Just wonder if there is some settings about it.

Is this XP or Vista ? ?HP PC and I'm running win 7 ultimateSince you put your original post in the DOS forum I had to guess, and moved it to the XP forum. I'll now MOVE it to the Windows 7 forum. Please try to post in the correct forum in the future. Thank you.Exactly HOW did you upgrade to a larger drive?Quote from: Allan on July 18, 2013, 04:18:10 PM
Exactly HOW did you upgrade to a larger drive?

It sounds to me that he probably used a Disk Manager program and after the migration of the system to a larger HDD, used the program to DELETE the 100mb boot partition, thus deleting the MFT and MBR. In this case his only hope is that he saved the smaller HDD and can MIGRATE it to the larger HDD again.

If my guess is correct the 100mb (give or take) partition is fine. Just leave it alone next time around.Quote from: SuperTweaker on July 18, 2013, 09:20:03 PM

D'oh!

Couldn't agree with you more.

So now the obvious question. Did you make a Windows 7 boot disk through the Backup and Restore app? If so, boot to that disk, let Windows files load and choose to repair Startup.I got to a Command Prompt and typed in (Bootrec /fixboot)
it seemed to fix the problem.

Thank you all, you guys are the best.

Solve : One for the geeks how to edit system configuration?

Answer»

When you tick selective STARTUP where is the infornation stored. I will explain why I am asking. TRYING to speed up my son's dell studio 1555 laptop I went into system configuration to begin disabling startup ITEMS. I noticed the selective startup was ticked and it was not using the normal boot. I innocently selected start normally, apply and restart. The laptop says it can't find the boot device. On ENQUIRING it TURNS out something had screwed up the boot command and that was how he fixed it. I can access the drive via an external caddy and was wondering if there was a way of accessing the system configuration settings when the disk is not the primary and not one used to boot the laptop. I am using an older smaller drive that we replaced for the larger one so it us in the same laptop. Keen to see if it's possible as I know it's just unchecking tgat selection that will allow the drive to work on the pc. Therafter I can copy the dive for backup and go about rebuilding the correct boot command

Try using the primopdf printer. Once installed, you print like you would do for any other NORMAL printer, but instead of coming out of a physical printer, the stuff you printed gets saved to your computer as a pdf file.

I find that this is the best way to save webpages to my harddrive (At least for me that is)http://www.ghacks.net/2005/12/27/how-to-save-websites-to-your-hard-drive/

Solve : I think I messed up my computer?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio model number PCG-7134M.
It was gifted to me and has a Windows 7 product key. I WANTED to upgrade it to Windows 10 and searched on YouTube on how to do this.
I downloaded Ventoy and created a ISO file on a FLASH drive. I also downloaded Windows 10 64 bit.
I followed the INSTRUCTIONS I was GIVEN and when I turn on my laptop, it loads Ventoy and comes up with an error message saying "No ISO file found (press enter to reboot) and when I reboot I get the same message.
If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
Why use Ventoy ? ? The media creator tool works fine...

Solve : "broken text"?

Answer»

Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Any ideas please?
I downloaded quite a few Windows updates and then noticed that the font in Windows apps was "fractured" with bits missing.
I did a system RESTORE and all normal again.
I had not downloaded any other information in the preceding days.
I will try to attach a screen shot (in two pieces) of those programs I downloaded.

[recovering DISK space, attachment deleted by admin]Second portion

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]What was the PURPOSE of posting the screen shots? I see nothing unusual in them. Unsure of requirements. Thought they may have something to do with it.
Seemed peculiar that the font problem occurred after those downloads, and when I performed a system restore for a few days previous, all was serene. I have limited computer knowledge and thought I was doing the right thing.
I would still like to know what caused the problem on a learning basis.
Posting screen shots can be very helpful when they actually show the problem. But, your screen shots show no evidence whatsoever of "broken text".

I don't know what caused the problem; perhaps other members will have comments on this. But, your approach to resolving it was appropriate; you made good use of the system restore feature. Screen shots were taken after the system restore and therefore showed no broken fonts.
Thank you for youir interest anyhow.
The only thing I can THINK of doing, is to download the updates one or two at a time and NOTE if they send the font bonkers. Thanks again.
One way to deal with this or other problems that might arise from updates is to use a drive image tool such as Macrium Reflect Free and create a full image of your hard drive, or at least the partition on which the OS, i.e. Windows, resides before installing a batch of updates from Windows Updates. This image file should be put on an external drive or burned to an optical disc. This image file can be used to restore your system exactly to it's state at the date and time you created the image.

Solve : URGENT please help?

Answer»

I have an acer aspire one notebook. I've had it for almost 2 years and just last year I downloaded W.O.W and played it but while I was PLAYING until it lagged alot after lvl 21 it I enter an area in the game that made my computer lagg. and it blue screened and shut down v.v so I left it alone until today and I can't even get to my logg on screen

the message is : No Bootable device --Please restart system_
it's also beeping. theirs a low alarm clock sound and a loud -BEEP- what does this mean? is this fixable? or do I need to but a new computer?please help me and tell me if I left out some important information. Ah...it is probably your hard drive that is failing/has already failed... No bootable device means that the BIOS is not detecting the hard drive. When you entered that area that caused your computer to blue-screen it may have been reading from a corrupt sector on the hard drive.
I was going to say run http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html to further diagnose the problem but you can't even boot into Windows.

What I would do is TAKE the hard drive out of your laptop, plug it directly into a desktop computer's motherboard, download, burn to a DVD, and run TestDisk. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step:

TestDisk can:
Quote

  • Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
  • Rebuild NTFS boot sector
  • Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
  • Undelete files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem
  • TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know LITTLE or nothing about data recovery TECHNIQUES, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis.
It MIGHT be worth it to try the windows 7 recovery from the disc. If you have the windows vista/7 disc, put it in the optical drive and turn on the laptop. If bios is set to boot from optical drive it should tell you to press any key to boot to cd/dvd. Then once it loads click repair and see if the automatic repair fixes it. Could just be a bad MBR or something similar.

Solve : Pagefile remains in drive after set to no paging file?

I set my pagefile to be System managed on E: drive, but there are still a 13.4 GB pagefile.sys on C: and another 7.96 GB pagefile.sys on E:.

Also by that clip your settings are not what you think they are...
Then what or how should it be? I've set "No paging file" for all other drives except E:.From what I recall, Windows doesn't delete the pagefile.sys file(s) automatically. After you set the new paging file settings, you need to reboot (paging file changes do not take effect until you reboot!), then you have to delete it yourself.Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 27, 2021, 09:47:50 PM
From what I recall, Windows doesn't delete the pagefile.sys file(s) automatically. After you set the new paging file settings, you need to reboot (paging file changes do not take effect until you reboot!), then you have to delete it yourself.
I've tried to google this before posting the thread. From what I read, when "No paging file" is set, the page file created before should be gone after reboot. And when that doesn't happen, some said it's ok to delete it manually, some said no as it may mess thing up. So I'm not sure if it's actually SAFE to delete the one in C:. There will always be a small pagefile on c: drive regardless of your settings, but it should not be that large if you have set it for "none". And yes, you can try to delete it yourself - it won't do any damage though you may not be able to do it. Again, if after a reboot it's small, leave it be.OK so I've deleted the page file in C and reboot. There is no new page file created in C, leaving the only page file in E.

We'll SEE if all go well.

Cheers. There is likely a swapfile on c: (which, in my opinion, is nothing more than a small pagefile with a specific purpose). Regardless, it will be very small (it's required by the OS).

Solve : Windows 7 random error code?

Answer»

Hi, when my pc has been running for awhile; I get this everytime I use my pc now. ANYONE know how to make this stop poping up?

thanks.

Uploaded with ImageShack.usWhen you installed Microsoft Security Essentials...you should have paid closer attention to what you were installing.

You MAY have skipped over where it asks you to join SpyNet. If you did...the default setting was applied, which is: Join with a basic membership

Now...whenever MSE comes across a file it is not familiar with...it will ask you to submit it for verification with SpyNet.

To disable it...you'll need to make a registry edit.

Navigate to Hkey_LocaL_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\SpyNet\ and set the SpyNetReporting parameter to 0.

Please read: How To Disable Microsoft SpyNet In Windows 7

Edit...

By the way...

vbc.exe is a process associated with Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 from Microsoft Corporation.Do you usually just click cancel or close the window when this comes up? Or do you click send? Looks like the antivirus found something that could be malicious that it doesn't have in its definitions file. So it wants to send the files to Microsoft so that they can determine if they need to add it to a definitions file so other people can benefit. Try clicking send if you haven't, that might make it go away. I don't use Microsoft Security Essentials (although I hear its pretty good), so I'm not sure if this will work. If you click send and it still comes back then the next step would be to either go to the website for MSE and contact support to see what their solution is, or download a new antivirus (avast is another free one), uninstall MSE restart your computer then install the new antivirus. (drastic solution)GlitchPC sounds like he knows what he's talking about I'd try that first! Not sure why MSE doesn't recognize it's own software files, though. Maybe because the file is from an outdated version of Visual Studio.

The link above gives you a couple of ways to disable SpyNet...though, I really wouldn't recommend it...since it is a good way to have files analyzed that aren't being recognized by MSE's definitions.I shouldn't have to reinstall MSE. I'll disable spynet thing. Let U know of progress. I sent the message a couple of times. Nothing happened.

Solve : Unknown Hard error - ntdll.dll missing?

Answer»

Short version: w7 setup wouldn't load, Linux systems would. This is what I did to my system, in steps:

1) I had W7 installed but after meddling with the system, I could not reopen W7 - blue screen.
2) So I tried to reinstall from the cd, and exactly after the first windows setup bar finishes and those 4 colours reunite to open the rest of the setup - I receive a blue screen saying Unknown hard error ntdll.dll missing. I tried installing XP, and received a black screen saying the setup closed because a problem with my hd was found - something about hd not properly finished.
3) So I used Darik's Boot And Nuke and ERASED everything on it. After this the same problems with the 2 cd's. I tried all kind of tools, test from Partition Magic cd and tried to re-partition my hd propper. Nothing worked.
4) So I installed Linux Mint 15 - and worked.
5) But W7 is what I'd preffer - and still setup wouldn't load. Not even in Oracle VIRTUALBOX run through Linux.

Question:

What is wrong with my hard DRIVE that Linux can install, I have full acces to my hd from Linux or LiveCd's but Windows 7 would not install on it ?Let me try to recap this.
You had a working dual boot Windows 7 and Linux system.
You meddled and something happened to Windows 7.
You even tried to install XP.
You erased everything with some utility.
Now only Linux with work.
Are the above statements represent what happened?

You may have a rare problem with that had drive. Now is then time to try to install windows 7 on a clean hard drive that has been prepped for a PC. Rather then try using the save drive over again, try another drive. This will eliminate the hard drive as being the issue.

Thank you for your reply. No, the initial situation was: I had only w7 installed. I meddled and now only Linux works. There wasn't a dual boot. Do you know of any hard drive requirement that W7 had and Linux did not ? I suspect it is something wrong with something some data on the drive that enables it to boot normally for windows. I don't know what is it, I already tried to heal MBR, though I don't exactly know what that is. A HDD set up in Linux is not compatible with Windows. Unless there was an compatibility option chosen in the Linux setup.
In Windows, a HDD must be initialized and then formatted in NTFS. You can not initialize the HDD unless all partitions have been destroyed.

The MBR for Windows 7 is newly defined by Microsoft and DIFFERS from fierier definitions. The disc has to be set the way Windows wants it.
The current boot manager for Linux is GRUB. It is rather complex and beyhound the scope of this post. (GRUB can not program your microwave oven, but otherwise it can do a lots of things.)
Here is a post about Linux / Windows boot conflicts.
Windows Overwrites Linux Boot Manager
I still recommend you use another HDD. There is a small chance something happened to the HDD. Use another PC to test a spare HDD.

Solve : Lost power during data migration, now boot fails?

Answer»

My hold hdd had been crashing/freezing on OCCASION so I decided it was time to upgrade. I bought a new ssd, installed it into my case and downloaded Samsung'S data migration software. I had left my case partially OPEN in case something didn't work, but with everything going fine I closed up the case and moved it back into position. Big mistake. I knocked the power cable, computer lost power and now it won't boot. I think the process of copying windows files must have corrupted them on my hdd.
Currently my situation is as follows. When I turn on the computer I get the motherboard manufacturer logo, then several screens of 'loading windows files' then a pause before a REQUEST to insert proper boot media. I have opened the boot menu on start up but no OPTION boots properly. I have tried to get last Known Good Configuration via F8 but can't open it. F12 works but does nothing. I have access to a laptop with windows 10, is there a way I could use that as boot media to recover data and repair? I don't have my original Windows 7 disk.
Apologies for any typos, typing on my phone for obvious reasons. I would just re-run the Samsung migration tool...
I can't boot at all - so no access to the toolIsnt the migration tool on a USB syik ? ?...Can you get to BIOS to select boot device ? ?
No, the migration tool is a program run in windowsSee if you can get to the BIOS and check which drive its trying to boot to...

Solve : Random Screen Freezing - Please Help, been troubleshooting for a month...?

Answer»

Hello,

After many, many weeks of running various tests and doing a multitude of Google Searches and potential fixes, my issue has remained unchanged. Overall, the issue is simply freezing of the computer. The symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Random SCREEN freezes where no peripherals will respond and nothing on the screen moves. (This can occur for 3 seconds all the way to indefinitely)
  • The screen will stop for a few seconds and my mouse icon will change to whatever it was previously (word line edit icon, etc) and stay there until reboot.
  • Sometimes my mouse icon will disappear altogether until a reboot.

Now here is where the really ANNOYING part begins. I can run all high end games on Ultra High with my specs (listed below) for hours on end, even overnight and not have a single issue. And randomly I’ll have mini freezes in game rarely. I can even browse Reddit and the internet for hours, but if I leave for an hour with my machine on and come back, it’ll freeze indefinitely when I click on anything.

As for which things I have tested/troubleshoot:

  • I have run multiple Hard Drive tests, all come back completely fine.
  • I have run 3 passes of a Video Memory check and 0 errors were produced.
  • I ran MemTest 86 for my RAM and got 0 errors.
  • I have re-seated each Memory stick as well as re-seated the Video Card in multiple slots.
  • I have updated fully with all software as well as uninstalled and re-installed multiple things.
  • I cleaned out every inch of the computer including PSU/Video Card/CPU Fan, etc.

So now my biggest dilemma comes into play. I have no funds to buy or afford new/old Computer Parts to troubleshoot the hardware. I have enough funds to buy 1 thing MAYBE and test it. So I need help determining what the issue would be BEFORE I buy any hardware and test it.

Computer Specs:
4+ year old Gaming computer.
Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit SP1
AMD FX-8120 Zambezi (8-core processor) – 19 Degrees Celsius Average
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668Mhz
AsusTek Computer Sabertooth 990FX Motherboard – 38 Degrees Celsius Average
Asus VS247 Monitor (Primary)
Asus VE228 Monitor (Secondary)
1024MB Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti (MSI) – 39 Degrees Celsius Average
1TB Samsung HD103SJ Hard Drive

Other noted information I have discovered is that I can hear clicking sounds coming from my video card, but that might be from me cleaning it fairly soon, although this issue has been happening for a month now.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]What are your Temps ? ?I have seen MANY different event viewer errors from Hard Disk to Video Drivers to MSE Software, etc. It usually is 1 minute after the freezes though, so they are not the core issues as I have troubleshooted each of them. As for re-installing, I've done that 3 times. Heating and Fan has been mounted correctly since the machine was built, the low temp is normal as I have a heavy duty cpu fan. I might have someone available to lend me an older machine with some hardware.

If I can troubleshoot hardware, how should I go about it? Should I REMOVE one RAM stick at a time and see if it improves my issue before trying new pieces of hardware? Also, if the RAM doesn't change a thing, should I first TRY and put in new/other RAM before I try to test my graphics card, or does it not matter which route I take?

Also, below I linked my CoreTemp and Video Test

Those are with no load...you need to check them under load. But this occurs even when it's just sitting there... I don't understand how it being under a load would affect it as well when this HAPPENS whether it's under a heavy load or just sitting idle.Because under load temps will increase...Go to Power Options and make certain "Hibernate" is disabled. This can be very problematic in Windows OSes in general. Quote from: SuperTweaker on July 19, 2013, 07:11:30 AM
Go to Power Options and make certain "Hibernate" is disabled. This can be very problematic in Windows OSes in general.

It seems highly unlikely that hibernation is causing the problem when the PC isn't hibernating...

I have win7. home preimum 64 Bit and 4. GB of RAM.

I have an PS2. Opticale Mouse DiN connector.

I ran command promt as ADMIN and ran the command
powercfg -h on

To turn on the Hibernation feature then re booted the system.
Then in BiOS under power managment under Suspand Type I have S3. and for Resume By PS2. Mouse I set it to S3.

My Resume By PS2 option only has two options S3. and Disable.

I set it to S3. to match Suspand Type S3.

I save and re boot and at Desktop I go to start Sleep and system goes down and I move Mouse and never comes back till I tap Power BottunHi, what is the exact problem you are trying to point out here? Can you please rephrase or edit your post? Thanks. My system will not come out of saleep unless I tap the power bottun.

But not the mouse or keyboard.?Don't know if this will elicit a contrary opinion from others but in the past my research has found that a large segment of computer advisers do NOT recommend using the "hibernation" MODE . Just use sleep parameters instead.truenorthQuote from: nymph4 on March 13, 2012, 04:08:52 PM

I save and re boot and at Desktop I go to start Sleep and system goes down and I move Mouse and never comes back till I tap Power Bottun
So, do you mean to say the computer goes into Sleep mode or is it actually going into hibernation? Seems like the latter. But, you should be able to tell by the computer's behavior. Going into hibernation takes longer than going into sleep mode because hibernation saves an image on of the STATE prior to shutdown and powers off completely while going into sleep mode takes less since an image is not saved to the hard drive and some power remains to retain the computer state in memory. Similarly, coming out of hibernation takes longer than coming out of sleep mode and involves much more hard drive ACTIVITY since the image created upon hibernating must be read to restore the system to the state it was in just before hibernating. I don't know if this works with hibernation, but I know this solution works for normal sleep.

Click start orb -> devmgmt.msc -> press enter
Look for your mouse (most likely under "Human Interface Devices")
Expand that section
Right click on the item that appears to be your mouse -> properties -> power management
Check "Allow this device to bring the comp out of standby"
Press OK

Problem should be solved.

Solve : OS missing on factory restore?

Answer»

Hi, I have a sony VAIO Laptop that had multiple PROBLEMS eventualy telling me something about a dependncy SERVICE. I was advised to restore it to factory settings which I tied to do but now it just tells me the OS is not present or there is not enough space to perform the restore.
I am a disabled older user and I have come to rely on laptop for contact with the outside world.
Can you help at all PLEASE! What is the model of your VAIO?
How are you trying to restore the laptop to factory settings? With a recovery disk, with VAIO Recovery inside Windows, or with a hidden recovery partition that ships with some VAIO laptops?

What other problems are you experiencing with your laptop? Perhaps a complete wipe and reinstall of the OS isn't necessary.
Here are some steps you take to solve "The dependency service or group failed to start" error, for instance:
http://www.consideritfixed.com/2009/02/the-dependency.htmlHi, I followed the instructions after repeatedly pressing F8. would not allow system restore so went to restore factory settings. the first time it went to 100% then would not restart the 2nd attempt went to 97% then shut down. It now just tells me something like not enuogh room.
The model is VGN-CR21S with windows vista home premium.

I know next to nothing about computers just USE for email etc. so even posting on here has been a learning curve! Don't be ashamed or anything.... we all had to start somewhere, no?

I see what you have did wrong...
Here is your manual (right-click and save as):
http://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/RecoTS/2007Q3_RT_EN.pdf
Page 22 describes what you have been doing, which is attempting to restore your data from a backup copy made by the Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore Feature. However, to put it simply, your corrupted Windows installation is making corrupted backups of itself. Therefore when we attempt to restore from the image your computer can't start anymore.

What we want to do is do a complete reinstall of WinVista.
Page 37 of the aforementioned manual describes how to.
Instead of pressing F8 at start, press F10. If you have recovery disks burned from when Windows was working, insert them. If not, just carry on, the installer will guide you through the entire process.Oh THANKYOU so much. Will try that now.

Solve : Windows XP?

Answer»

I have officially left the past. I upgraded my computer from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Home Edition (SP1). I didn't EVEN know it WOULD run on a 200MHz Pentium Pro. It runs quite nicely (I have 144MB of RAM), but I am a little bit lacking in the hard drive department. It uses over half of my hard drive. I compressed it and I gained a little space, but you can't do much with 2.3GB. I have a question: can I assign my Tandberg TDC-4222 SCSI tape drive to a drive letter and use it like any removable media? If so, how do I do it? Also, can I make my computer any faster? Thanks.
-JohnI wouldn't have expected success on a PentiumPro 200. That was the "hot ticket" for about 1 year, I am quite familiar with it using NT4.0 with 64MB/128MB. You have proven (once again) that memory has a greater effect that raw cpu speed, 128MB seems to be the minimum for Win2k or WinXP. Don't know about the SCSI tape drive, but if it shows up under Computer Management, assign it a drive letter. Start looking for a little bigger hard drive, 4,6, or 8GB, your BIOS may not support anything larger. Hard drive rotational speed seems to make the most noticeable difference. Other than a faster hard drive and more memory, that's about it for a 10 year old computer. BTW, I have many old computers, '486 laptop being the oldest, no desktops older than PII-333.

Windows XP Home Edition System Requirements

It shows up in computer management, but how do I assign it a letter?

EDIT: P.S. I didn't expect it to run on a 200MHz processor either. It was more of an experiment than anything.
I have lost color of my Windows XP Taskbar & Start Menu. How I can I recover it?
Preferably by starting a new thread and giving us some more information as to what you think may have happened to cause this.Quote

John:

This is unrelated to your question, but if your hard drive is less than 3 GB in size, it's not much good for using Windows XP. You should *not* compress any operating system files (such as the Windows folder and its subfolders). If you have converted the hard drive from FAT to NTFS, you may uncompress the drive and then compress individual folders, instead.

You may want to install a second hard drive (even a used one as small as 4 GB) and install all your programs to that drive. You may even want to move your My Documents folder and pagefile to the second hard drive. You may even be able to buy several used SCSI hard drives really cheap and store everything but your operating system on those drives. Just make sure to properly terminate the SCSI adaptor and the last device on the internal SCSI chain or you may damage them. If you have both internal and external devices connected to the SCSI adapter, be sure to terminate the last device on the internal chain and the last device on the external chain to avoid damage to the devices.

I did a some thinking and here's what I came up with:

I've been using Windows XP for the past 5 days and it was great, but the amount of disk space it used and the way it slowed down my computer wasn't worth it. I decided to install Windows MILLENNIUM Edition. Now, before you say something mean about ME, it works fine on my computer and I have had NO trouble with it. I don't think it's as evil as everyone SAYS it is. I'm happy with it, and that's all that matters, right? Maybe if I get a faster computer with a bigger hard drive, I would install XP on that computer, but for right now, ME is fine. Thanks.

You said you downloaded 7zip, but you did not say if you installed 7zip.Yes I installed 7zip
So what happens when you run it then ? ?

It may be a bad zip file...there's always that possibility...I would uninstall 7zip and use Windows Compressed Folders to extract zipped files. Also, Compressed Folders are easy to use by adding all your content to want to email or upload to a standard folder, right click that folder and choose Compressed Folder. Now you have a legacy zip file which can be EASILY opened by a recipient.

If you are going with 7ip for encryption reasons, that's another story.

If you're determined to use 7zip then uninstall it, go to Organize on the Toolbar, choose Folder and Search Options, unhide (hidden files and folders). Then visually search Program Files (x86), Program Files, User Accounts (your account) AppData, Roaming/Local folders for any remnants of 7zip. Run CCleaner both cleaner and registry cleaner.

Reboot your system and run CCleaner again. After it's cleaned-up everything Reinstall 7zip. Make sure when you install 7zip.

Let us know how it turns out.

Solve : Task Manager?

Answer»

Hi,

All of a sudden my Task Manager doesn't display properly.
It only shows a screen of services and this can't be closed either.
Any ideas

DavidWhat do you mean a screen of services? Can you either post a screenshot or explain further? Can't be closed ? ?
Also explain this ...Sorry for the delay.

I've attached a screen shot of the box that opens when I select Task Manager.

Do you think I am infested with bugs ?

Thanks

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Okay, that's just the simple view of Task Manager. You toggle that view on and off by double-clicking anywhere on the edge of the window.Hi,

Thanks, I feel a bit stupid now !

Cheers

DavidDon't. It happens all the time - if you've never seen it before how would you know? Thanks Alan, I appreciate your empathy ( or is it really sympathy )

take care

DavidIt;s understanding... Yeah, understanding how dumb people can be Not at all...If anybody is dumb it's Microsoft for adding such a blatantly stupid FEATURE.

It's stupid because:

1. It's not obvious that double-clicking the window will put it into some goofy title-less mode.
2. It's easy to accidentally double-click the window, at which point there is no indication what happened, and no way to know
how it got to that state, and thus no way to know how the heck to get it back.
3. Double-clicks on the client area to change modes in a non-obvious way is also dumb. It should require a menu option, and when ENABLED there should be a clear method to turn it back; there's plenty of space at the bottom for a button, after all.

4. Perhaps most importantly, The number of people using "TINY footprint mode" as it is called voluntarily is probably a lot less than those who accidentally enabled it and have no idea how to get it back.

The user is never responsible for stupid design choices. The taskbar mode change on client area double-click is perhaps one of the dumbest, least useful, and most problem-inducing "feature" added to any MS applet.

I feel so much better now after your comments BC, I'm so PLEASED it's not as obvious as I thought.
Thanks for that !Even if you don't have those Close, Minimize and Maximize Buttons in the window, you can always right-click on the app in the taskbar and close it. Quote from: khiladi007 on March 17, 2012, 11:53:40 PM

Even if you don't have those Close, Minimize and Maximize Buttons in the window, you can always right-click on the app in the taskbar and close it.

Of COURSE the primary problem when in the small footprint mode is not the accessibility of the non-client area (caption buttons) but rather the fact that you cannot switch tabs, there is no menu, and in general unless you know what you did, you've suddenly made task manager about a tenth as useful.
