Solve : Program Files sub folders and files view issue? |
Answer» Local C: > Program Files/Program Files (x86) > Folders > the sub folders and files are OPTIMIZED for "Videos" upon new install of any program. It wasn't like this before. They USED to be optimized for "General Items" view. I can't change it in "Program Files" properties because the CUSTOMIZE TAB isn't there. |

Solve : Win 7 vs Win 7 with SP1? |
Answer» Need to buy for a clean install on a new HD on my S-I-L's old HP Pavilion 753n rig. It came with Win 7 Home Edition. HD is failing and was too late to image. Macrium Reflect gave it the good ole college try but it would not work. I assume the 753n can handle SP1 but I do not know pros/cons or if it even matters? Thanks. If you are doing a clean install on the same PC and you have the COA code no need to buy Win7 again... If you are doing a clean install on the same PC and you have the COA code no need to buy Win7 again... Where would I find the Product Code? I wonder if it is on the outside of her tower? I think mine is.It would be stuck on the tower on a sticker or in a box with the DVD which you don't have, this is of course assuming the original copy was genuine. Quote from: artbuc on August 09, 2014, 11:43:58 AM Thanks Cameronguy but my S-I-L wants this machine fixed up, no if's and's or but's.Just ensure she does realise that she could easily get a much better machine for the same if not less money, a lot of people don't realise this and think that fixing their existing one will work out cheaper. Quote from: camerongray on August 09, 2014, 11:49:48 AM It would be stuck on the tower on a sticker or in a box with the DVD which you don't have, this is of course assuming the original copy was genuine. It came installed on the machine which she purchased new from a reputable company so I assume all is legit. She does not care too much about the money angle, she primarily wants to keep everything the same as long as she can. If $60 buys her one more year, she will be happy. Where could she get a much better machine for $60 or less? Quote from: patio on August 09, 2014, 10:46:59 AM P.S. the Editions have to match... Does this mean I can download only Win 7 and must later add SP1? I will have to check her machine. Would her original Win7 install have been automatically UPDATED to Win 7 w/SP1 as part of routine updates? In that case the company would have included a sticker on the case which will have the product key printed on it or would have included a DVD with the product key in the box. Quote from: artbuc on August 09, 2014, 11:57:43 AM Where could she get a much better machine for $60 or less? eBay has quite a lot of used Core 2 Duo machines for under $60 but I was more thinking about the $160 if you ended up buying a copy of Windows as well which could easily get you a Core 2 Quad or even better machine with Windows 7.Thanks again Cameronguy. I would not have a clue about buying a used machine...chances are pretty good I would end up in a worse position, lol.Look here for direct downloads of Win 7. Click here for good buys on refurbished computers. Ok, now I will show you how computer dumb I am. How can I download Win 7 onto a new hard drive? I will not have a browser to connect to the internet. Do I have to download it to a different external storage device? How do I then get it onto the new hard drive? Thanks. If you go down to the third page you will find the ISO images which can be downloaded using the computer that you're presently using to POST here. Next, you will need to burn the ISO image to a disk. You can use this ISO burner. Finally, you boot your computer with the the disk in the drive and install Windows 7.Just make sure you download the correct version for your computer. ISO burner can be found here. Solve : Are the many programs that claim to repair my registery for real?? |
Answer» Hello. I am running Vista on my home assembled desktop that has served me pretty well for over five years. I get several messages weekly from people wanting to sell me software supposed to repair my registery. I have seen some that scans my computer and then display a whole host of problems they have discovered. They most often ask me to register my system (or something similar). You are right to be suspicious. Those things you are seeing are just adverts on websites, it is impossible for them to actually check your computer, they are purely showing an IMAGE in an attempt to scare/trick you into installing their software. The same goes for any messages you see on websites saying things about problems with your computer. While it is true that over time, old registry keys get left around by badly written programs.etc - They do not cause an issue. What these "registry cleaner" programs claim is that having these stray entries slows everything down. If the registry was just one big long list that the computer had to search through then yes, having to check over these stray entries would slow it down. However, the registry is not a big long list, it is a much fancier tree-like structure. When Windows tries to access a portion of the registry it does not have to check through everything therefore even if there is a couple of stray keys that it does have to check, the speed difference would be so tiny that it is effectively nonexistant. What I find funny is that these programs are basically saying "We know more than Microsoft does about Windows" - If registry errors were such an issue, surely Microsoft would have included software with Windows to deal with them, much like they do with Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. In short, all registry cleaner software is junk, don't bother with it.Ditto...I also AGREE that they are all junk. The last one I used was a SYMANTEC Norton System Works 2003 and that software surprisingly was very troublesome when using system corrective registry tools. I learned that when the registry gets hosed that its best to just backup data to an external hard drive and then rebuild the system clean. Even easier is if you create an system image from a clean build and then can simply restore your system BACK to the clean build state. So I was using Norton Ghost 2003 for quite some time to burn DVD's of a clean build and whenever the system was showing signs that its time for a rebuild I was able to copy my important data to an external and then wipe the hard drive and install the clean image to the system and copy my data back and it felt like a new system again. One other utility that I use to use a while back was called GoBack http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoBack , but as soon as Microsoft started adding the restore point feature to its operating systems, I soon found myself no longer using this software. This software I mainly used on test systems when testing out free software which sometimes had dirty uninstallers or were bundled with surprises, and it allowed me to restore my Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro systems back to clean state before the software or problem was added, and was nicer than having to perform a full rebuild. These days if you want to refresh a system back to a clean healthy state your best options are a system restore point if enabled and available, installation of a clean image overtop of the old data on the hard drive, or a clean build after wiping the drive clean. * Just be sure to backup all data to an external before taking any actions so you dont lose data. Also be sure to install an up to date antivirus and perform a full scan of the external drive or media that the data was backed up on, so you do not reintroduce the problem back if its a viral problem. We had a clerk at one of our customer sites run some kind of Aggressive Registry Cleaner. It completely destroyed our software registry information and made all of our software break and not recognize what other components were installed. Three guesses who got blamed! Many thanks to all who replied! Your comments, which were unamous confirmed my suspicions. Thanks again, Ivan |

Solve : Running windows vista ultimate. A problem with Windows Mail?? |

Answer» I recently was given a new email address and also Yahoo mail. I changed the settings in windows mail and can now receive mail but not send. I recently was given a new email address and also Yahoo mail. I changed the settings in windows mail and can now receive mail but not send. What error message do you get? I will assume the issue is with your INTERNET Service Provider. In that case, probable PROBE is this: Sending requires SMTP protocol. You have it, but your ISP will not allow it. it is a real PITA. The SMTP is use by a local email client to send messages. The ISP BLOCKS it. Soluition: Talk to your ISP people. Ask then to allow you SMTP. If the will not give permission lo use SMTP, you will have to use a web-based email. Sometimes that is the only recourse. BTW: This is a problem also for LAPTOP and mobile users. When you go mobile the service provider has to allow you to send messages, but only using address recognized as belonging to you and with protocol for mobile devices. My provider called me this afternoon(judge if this was oppertune). They were checking on how I was getting along with my new connection. I described my problem, he took control of my puter, (I heard a lot of keys clicking) Now my puter seems it's old self again. I never learned what was amiss. May have been just what you suspected. Thanks so much for you response! Keep up the good work! Copas Quote from: copas on August 26, 2014, 12:26:52 PM I recently was given a new email address and also Yahoo mail. Solve : Taking Ownership all Windows files.? |
Answer» Hello good evening, I've been having problems for about 2-3 months and still can't seem to fix this issue. I have tried to RESTORE my computer to a previous restart point.. but somehow it got deleted and I have no restart points to go back to. I want to take full Ownership of my computer files, right now I cannot do anything pretty much . I get a message from windows saying; " You will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes. " ...and I'm Admin!. System Info: Win 7 64-bit Computer USER Accounts = 4Have you tried this method yet: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff404240.aspx Quote from: DaveLembke on June 20, 2014, 06:29:11 PM Have you tried this method yet: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff404240.aspx Hello, YES I have. I just simply want to take ownership of all files. I tried doing the first option on; http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff404240.aspx but I am confused because I am " Art " as my username for PC, and I'm Admin too....so? [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Of special interest is this: (From link given in #2 post.) Quote The default owner of a file or folder is the person who creates the resource. Ownership can be taken or transferred in several ways. The current owner of a file or folder can transfer ownership to another user or group. A member of the Administrators group can take ownership of a file or folder or transfer ownership to another user or group—even if administrators are LOCKED out of the resource according to the permissions. Any user with the Take Ownership permission on the file or folder can take ownership, as can any member of the Backup Operators group (or anyone else with the Restore Files And Directories user right, for that matter). If somehow an owner of a personal computer has lost his permission and it was not the act of an legit administrator, it may indicate the presence of malware. Reference: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/3387-73-temp-folder-writing-permission-itself I think it was legit because I was Administrator and I've been changing things around.. I'll scan my computer for any infections again and see what happens. Took a couple screenshots of these; [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I am Username " ROCKY " as my PC Admin name and I was trying to "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects " Messages popped up and I hit Yes and Continue to all. After it was done I decided to do a test Installing iTUNES but failed. Still the same problem.. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]If your computer clean and doesn't affected by any malware, your problem will be solved easily, just try to search, or just waatch this video i found it on utube may help u youtube[.]com/watch?v=8C0ArKet6EQThe file names the OP has in the screenshots indicate the files are protected by the system. The user should not alter fires protected by the system. His Post coulda been ignored anyways Geek....just sayin. |

Solve : Not Exactly Sure? |
Answer» I don't know what's going on with my desktop. It stopped working, like it would start up and then just... go to a blank screen and the monitor would say nothing detected after having just shown the black screen with the window. We tried my friend's motherboard with my graphics card, hard drive, and power source and it started up fine. So... I don't know, I'm out of ideas. Did you checked your monitor, video cable and RAM (alternately) also? Hey! Thanks for the QUICK reply. We used my RAM sticks on his motherboard when we tried it. The monitors and cables both work fine as far as I can tell. We swapped out cables with some he had spare and the problem remained.Okay, just started it up again on the right monitor and it took me to the windows failed to start screen. There I selected repair automatically and it went to the loading screen which is where it goes blank and the monitor pops up the "no signal detected" screen.Use onboard video if available and one stick of RAM alternately on different slots starting on first channel slot. REMOVE any connected or unwanted peripherals except for mouse and keyboard. A hardware RESET or CMOS removal for a couple of minutes may be needed to RECONFIGURE the default settings.Okay, I've done all those. It went to the "Window failed to repair automatically" where I then went to try to use an earlier setting and mid-trying to get there it gave the familiar suddenly black screen and "no input detected". Can you boot to safemode? Try using a Linux bootable CD and see if the video problem exist from there - Puppy or UBUNTU http://www.howtogeek.com/172810/take-a-secure-desktop-everywhere-everything-you-need-to-know-about-linux-live-cds-and-usb-drives/ |

Solve : SSD Problem?? |
Answer» I have recently INSTALLED a SSD 240gb. First I 'cloned' c drive with the included s/ware. This did not work out well as the PC booted to the old HDD. I removed the old drive and did a clean install on the SSD and transferred files back from the old HDD, then removed it. Now at boot, Windows Boot Manager page comes up with a choice of two OS both Win 7. There is physically only one drive in the PC. There is no sign of a Windows.old on the system. I have cleared CMOS etc. I would like for it to boot straight AWAY as that is why I bought an SSD! Any ideas please. Quote from: alexma on September 29, 2014, 09:56:43 AM I removed the old drive and did a clean install on the SSD and transferred files back from the old HDD What files did you transfer? See Here...Also to add to this... with both SSD and HDD originally connected in the clone attempt, Windows installation may have detected the other Windows installation on the other drive and installed to the SSD as a dual OS installation which gives you a choice at boot for one or the other. Then removing the HDD and having the SSD remaining the boot manager isnt smart enough to test for this HDD and so it boots off of the SSD and gives option for the HDD which is no longer connected. If this is the case then its a simple fix as shared in Patio's link. However if you had the cloned copy of Windows onto the SSD and then decided that that wasnt working out so well and decided to then perform a clean installation, Windows on installation searches drives for Windows installations. It is possible to breeze past an important option to not have the other Windows installation remain, and so you can have 2 installations of Windows on the same drive, one that is functional and the other that is not, or you can have 2 installations of the same OS both functional. The problem here is that each installation takes up drive SPACE and so if this is what happened then you will have to determine which Windows install is the one that you do not want and manually delete it to get say 20GB back which is otherwise wasted with the initial install that you really want gone from the drive, but otherwise remained through the process of the 2nd installation.First of all Thank you Patio, your solution did the trick. Secondly, DaveLembke, how would I know if there are two OS's on the drive simultaneously running or otherwise? Quote DaveLembke, how would I know if there are two OS's on the drive simultaneously running or otherwise? They wouldnt be running simultaneously, only 1 runs at a time unless you create and use virtual machines with VMware etc. If the install wasnt 100% clean in which the SSD was not completely formatted before the OS was installed to it, it could be possible for Windows to detect a prior copy of Windows already installed to that drive, and for Windows to install a fresh copy alongside the old install. Its more common when upgrading Windows that it creates a Windows.Old folder. Pretty much if you look at C: and dont see any duplicate folders with the Windows name, then your good, but if you found one that is like Windows.Old, then its wasted space and could be removed. More info on this at the link below. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/delete-remove-windows-old-folder |

This is actually a laptop, so it would actually be a small battery pack instead of a 2032 usually, although I have seen 2032's heatshrink wrapped with a plug on a short length of wire before on some older Dells so its not completely impossible for it to not be a 2032, but 99% chance its not a 2032 battery in the laptop, and if it is a 2032 that is in a shrink wrap with a small cable coming out of it, its best to buy the exact replacement than to boil the battery trying to solder the 2 wires to + and - on top and bottom side. If I had to install a 2032 or convert to a 2032, I think I would get a 2032 button/coin cell socket off of an old motherboard or buy one new and solder to the socket the correct polarity and then either shrink wrap, hot glue, or electrical tape to seal it up so that it couldnt short against anything inside the laptop as well as add 2 sided tape to affix it from being loose inside. All you need really is 3V ... in total desperation ( with a desktop computer) a while back ( 15 years ago ) I used 2 x AA batteries with a AA Battery Cradle from Radio Shack for a 486 computer when the Lithium that was soldered directly to the motherboard died. cut the 2 legs off the leaking lithium then bought for $1.95 at Radio Shack a 2 x AA black plastic battery cradle, then just wire up + to + and - to - and add 2 x AA batteries for 1.5V x 2 = 3V and i used the sticky velcro that i had available to stick it to the side of the power supply. But I agree that the CMOS battery is bad if its losing its date/time.Ahh, thanks y'all. Err, I'm not too sure what kinda battery this is exactly? I don't see ANY numbers, letters, anything. (I guess I shoulda got out my good camera, but there's not much to it anyway.) I'm guessing this is what I need? http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/sanyo-ml1220-tj1-rechargeable-coin-cell-w-2-pin-vertical-mount-96862922.htm And... Solder it? [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]This is hilarious. But ignore the funny part. The last shows how to open a Toshiba and get to the CMOS cell. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYKmbroqmOg Also see: http://www.retrevo.com/search/v2/jsp/mytrevo/myTrevo.jsp?page=man OR http://www.manualowl.com/p/Toshiba/Satellite-L355D-S7901/Manual/166592 The first one did not work for me. The info suggests s the battery is not REPLACEABLE. Unfortunately, mine isn't that easy to get to the battery.. lol I know how to get to it though.. I just did, and took a (bad) picture *censored*. It's totally replaceable. Maybe not easily, but still. Quote from: Sammii on July 29, 2014, 01:01:45 PM Unfortunately, mine isn't that easy to get to the battery.. lolSoldering temperatures are in the 450°F to 650°F range. If a component is not soldered, do not try to solder it. Instead, use an alternative method of attachment. Mechanical clip, spot weld or superconductive adhesive are alternatives to solider. I would suggest liquid solder used very carefully. You have never seen a pack assembled by a cell manufacturer or any other pack manufacturer where CONNECTIONS are soldered directly to a cell. There is a reason. Quote General Electric Nickel Cadmium Battery Application Manual [Library ofYeah, I know you can't solder batteries.... but the little tab things? To connect to the board? For a second? I'd definitely like to use something more like liquid solder, or something. If anybody thinks they know how to solder to a small battery, here is the tesat. Hold a copper penny between the thumb and index of the left had. With your right hand and your teeth use a small solder iron to tack a wire to the penny using low temperature solder. It has lead, might be hard to find. If you have to drop the penny after twenty seconds.. you lose! Never exactly heard it described that way... My guess is that Geek has tried this test I have been tested as well with other stuff working in electronics shops etc where people show off their skills and those who have a high tolerance for pain or nerve damage might succeed with the soldering of the penny and say ... see i did it! LOL The one test I would never do that some did to show off in electronics manufacturing was wetting your finger and dipping it in and out of MOLTEN lead in the solder pot quickly which was used for tinning thru hole components for mil-spec builds where not just specific parts had to be used, but they also had to be retinned before installation in PCB's. A wet finger protected you from getting burned if you did it fast enough as the lead wouldnt stick to your skin and you would have a poof of steam, as well as you wouldnt be burned or blistered. ((( Do not try this at home ))) That was a stupid test. The best test was a series of resistors all soldered in a box ( cube ) form and telling the new ET to solve the resistance from corner to corner of the resistor cube which was a 3D cube of resistors soldered together without cheating with a multimeter. Do the math for all resistors parallel and in series and give your answer, where those in parallel drop the resistance and those in series add the ohms. Nothing like making the green horn ET break a sweat to show he has the skills freshly hired out of college or off the street to solve a ohms law problem with all the resistors part of the equation. those who were successful didnt waste their time staring at the cube and wrote down what the cube would be in 2D as a circuit and then solved that on paper!..LOLBy the way this battery if its the same one you have in your laptop: http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/sanyo-ml1220-tj1-rechargeable-coin-cell-w-2-pin-vertical-mount-96862922.htm It should be pretty easy to solder in. However I'd take a pair of dikes and cut the legs off the old battery. then solder the new battery to the old legs in respect to the proper polarity!!! This cutting of the legs of the component will protect you from overheating the board and damaging any internal traces that are connected to the 3VDC battery. * Just be sure the tip of the dike doesnt dig into the board surface and you are only cutting the old battery legs off to be able to apply the new battery in place of it. *** If you were really skilled at soldering for removing and replacing components with solder sucker etc, i'd go the route of a complete removal, but many people out there struggle to remove parts without damaging the board that they are in. Common problem is overheating the barrel and burning the board as well as ripping the barrel out of the board that the leg is stuffed into, or breaking a via and you end up with an open circuit. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_%28electronics%29Coool. Ah, makes sense. Thanks :3 I think it's the same... It's the closest thing I've seen to mine anywhere. Someone recommended it for my laptops model on some other page. I'm not skilled. I've maybe soldered something once awhileee ago. But, i'm not a idiot (I like to think) + my dad knows more about this, and was an electrician for a bit so.... I should get enough help all around to do it. Is it a better idea to get a lower heat iron? (or lower Watt)Buy one with solder tabs. CR2032 Lithium Battery with Solder Tabs At Amazon it sells for under $4 plus shipping . Dear OP, please give up on the idea of using a solder iron. Yes, some of us hobbyists do it all the time, even though we know better. It is like a challenge. Like shaving with a hunting knife. A macho thing.so... I'm supposed to get a battery with solder tabs, but not solder it? How's it supposed to attach, then? (and that battery wouldn't work, the two tabs need to be next to each other. I'm quite sure I already posted a link to a battery with solder tabs, in the right place, that will work though) Meh, now i'm getting pretty determined. I'll most likely obviously practice on something not important first to figure it out more, though. |
