Solve : Registry Changes -> Not enough RAM?

Answer»

Hey guys out there,

i use Win 7 x64 with LATEST updates.

To get a problem with an older program solved i followed a variety of steps which included to do some registry changes.
That worked all fine, until i had to restart the PC next morning. There was no sound, and no Win-related programs, for example explorer, clock, photo viewer and so on were working. Im sure this came from the registry changes.

If i want to start Windows Explorer, an error occurs, saying something like " there is not enough RAM available to run this program. Stop some other programs and try again".

All other programs WORK all good.

Creating a new user ACCOUNT via cmd.exe didnt work out either.

Is there a way to find out, what changes i need to UNDO?

Best Regards

Solve : Program Files sub folders and files view issue?

Answer»

Local C: > Program Files/Program Files (x86) > Folders > the sub folders and files are OPTIMIZED for "Videos" upon new install of any program.  It wasn't like this before.  They USED to be optimized for "General Items" view.  I can't change it in "Program Files" properties because the CUSTOMIZE TAB isn't there.

Solve : Win 7 vs Win 7 with SP1?

Answer»

Need to buy for a clean install on a new HD on my S-I-L's old HP Pavilion 753n rig. It came with Win 7 Home Edition. HD is failing and was too late to image. Macrium Reflect gave it the good ole college try but it would not work. I assume the 753n can handle SP1 but I do not know pros/cons or if it even matters? Thanks.  If you are doing a clean install on the same PC and you have the COA code no need to buy Win7 again...
You can DLoad a version from Digital RIVER and use your liscense key to activate...
Completely legit to do so.P.S. the Editions have to match...As patio SAID, as long as you have a valid licence and key you can just download the media to install it - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-Multiple-Languages-X86-amp-X64/page59?p=470600&viewfull=1#post470600

That said, I would never CONSIDER buying a new copy of Windows 7 for that machine, you would be looking at spending $100 on Windows after already spending $60 on a hard drive, this is simply not at all worth it for a machine that old.  There is a time when a PC is simply too old that you start wasting money trying to keep it going, For $160 you could easily find a second hand PC that would be much newer and more powerful.  I felt that $60 for the hard drive was already more than the machine was worth, throwing another $100 at it would be silly.

To answer your original question, like any Windows update you should have SP1 installed as it provides a lot of security and other patches to the OS.Thanks Cameronguy but my S-I-L wants this machine fixed up, no if's and's or but's. Quote from: patio on August 09, 2014, 10:46:33 AM

Where would I find the Product Code? I wonder if it is on the outside of her tower? I think mine is.It would be stuck on the tower on a sticker or in a box with the DVD which you don't have, this is of course assuming the original copy was genuine.

Thanks Cameronguy but my S-I-L wants this machine fixed up, no if's and's or but's.
Just ensure she does realise that she could easily get a much better machine for the same if not less money, a lot of people don't realise this and think that fixing their existing one will work out cheaper. Quote from: camerongray on August 09, 2014, 11:49:48 AM

It came installed on the machine which she purchased new from a reputable company so I assume all is legit. She does not care too much about the money angle, she primarily wants to keep everything the same as long as she can. If $60 buys her one more year, she will be happy. Where could she get a much better machine for $60 or less? Quote from: patio on August 09, 2014, 10:46:59 AM
P.S. the Editions have to match...

Does this mean I can download only Win 7 and must later add SP1? I will have to check her machine. Would her original Win7 install have been automatically UPDATED to Win 7 w/SP1 as part of routine updates? In that case the company would have included a sticker on the case which will have the product key printed on it or would have included a DVD with the product key in the box.

eBay has quite a lot of used Core 2 Duo machines for under $60 but I was more thinking about the $160 if you ended up buying  a copy of Windows as well which could easily get you a Core 2 Quad or even better machine with Windows 7.Thanks again Cameronguy. I would not have a clue about buying a used machine...chances are pretty good I would end up in a worse position, lol.Look here for direct downloads of Win 7. Click here for good buys on refurbished computers. Ok, now I will show you how computer dumb I am. How can I download Win 7 onto a new hard drive? I will not have a browser to connect to the internet. Do I have to download it to a different external storage device? How do I then get it onto the new hard drive? Thanks. If you go down to the third page you will find the ISO images which can be downloaded using the computer that you're presently using to POST here. Next, you will need to burn the ISO image to a disk. You can use this ISO burner. Finally, you boot your computer with the the disk in the drive and install Windows 7.Just make sure you download the correct version for your computer.

Solve : PC won't start properly, hard drive fried??

Answer»

I know my way around computers decently but this has me at a loss. Also, I'm new here so try not to judge too harshly!
When I start up my desktop It flashes the "Acer" start up screen but then goes straight to this black screen which I'll attach here. Tells me to ctrl+alt+del it and reboot and it's this never ending cycle of black screening me. My best guess is the hard drive is screwed up, I have a toddler that LOVES to bang on things so maybe he broke something... is this an easy and cheap fix? I had to sell my alienware laptop a few months back and now everything is dying out on me, life isn't fair >.<
Acer
Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
AMD Athlon IIX2 255 Dual-core processor
 4gb DDR3 memory
1TB Hard drive
NVIDIA GEFORCE 9200
That's all the information I have on it seeing as I can't access anything really.
Any ideas on what to do with it would be greatly appreciated.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]That certainly does sound like the hard drive, best thing to do would be to find out who made the hard drive (there will be a STICKER on the drive) and download/run their diagnostic software to test the hard drive.  For example, if the hard drive is made by "Seagate" then you need the "Seatools" diagnostics, if it is made by "Western Digital" you would need the "Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic".

A replacement hard drive is likely to cost anything from $30 upwards depending on the size of hard drive you want.

You would then just need to swap the hard drives and then reinstall Windows onto the new drive.

Alternatively you may want to get quotes from local PC repair places to do it for you - If you do go down this route, get multiple quotes from different places, don't just go with the first one you see. Thanks for the quick reply! I'll run the diagnostics, I'm pretty sad about all the things not backed up I'm PROBABLY going to lose, but live and learn. I'll come back with what I find out with the diagnostics. I can't find the disks that came with the PC which would be helpful, but I'll see how this goes. If you wish to create this DISK you will be able to access all that important data from the computer.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be found here.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the REMOTE registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
  • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved  in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Solve : Are the many programs that claim to repair my registery for real??

Answer»

Hello. I am running Vista on my home assembled desktop that has served me pretty well for over five years.
I get several messages weekly from people wanting to sell me software supposed to repair my registery. I have seen some that scans my computer and then display a whole host of problems they have discovered. They most often ask me to register my system (or something similar).

I'm suspicious of these attemps but I can't say I really understand what's involved technically.

I would be interested in hearing opinions from those 'in the know'.

Thanks all for a great site.

Ivan CopasRegistry utilities CAUSE problems, they don't "cure" anything. There is nothing in the registry that needs to be repaired. The "best" registry utilities are benign and do absolutely nothing. The worst of them will LEAVE your system unusable.I was told, quite aggressively, by a young colleague who believes he knows everything about computers, that the Windows registry gets "fragmented" and this can slow down a PC. I ventured to disagree, which quite annoyed him, but I stood my ground. Part of his problem is he thinks nobody over 50 understands modern technology. When he went to lunch somebody else told me this guy has only ever owned Apple computers and phones and has never run a Windows computer of his own. (He also knows all about Android)

Like Allan said, the registry can look after itself.

You are right to be suspicious.  Those things you are seeing are just adverts on websites, it is impossible for them to actually check your computer, they are purely showing an IMAGE in an attempt to scare/trick you into installing their software.  The same goes for any messages you see on websites saying things about problems with your computer.

While it is true that over time, old registry keys get left around by badly written programs.etc - They do not cause an issue.
What these "registry cleaner" programs claim is that having these stray entries slows everything down.  If the registry was just one big long list that the computer had to search through then yes, having to check over these stray entries would slow it down.  However, the registry is not a big long list, it is a much fancier tree-like structure.  When Windows tries to access a portion of the registry it does not have to check through everything therefore even if there is a couple of stray keys that it does have to check, the speed difference would be so tiny that it is effectively nonexistant.

What I find funny is that these programs are basically saying "We know more than Microsoft does about Windows" - If registry errors were such an issue, surely Microsoft would have included software with Windows to deal with them, much like they do with Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup.

In short, all registry cleaner software is junk, don't bother with it.Ditto...I also AGREE that they are all junk. The last one I used was a SYMANTEC Norton System Works 2003 and that software surprisingly was very troublesome when using system corrective registry tools.

I learned that when the registry gets hosed that its best to just backup data to an external hard drive and then rebuild the system clean. Even easier is if you create an system image from a clean build and then can simply restore your system BACK to the clean build state. So I was using Norton Ghost 2003 for quite some time to burn DVD's of a clean build and whenever the system was showing signs that its time for a rebuild I was able to copy my important data to an external and then wipe the hard drive and install the clean image to the system and copy my data back and it felt like a new system again.

One other utility that I use to use a while back was called GoBack http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoBack , but as soon as Microsoft started adding the restore point feature to its operating systems, I soon found myself no longer using this software. This software I mainly used on test systems when testing out free software which sometimes had dirty uninstallers or were bundled with surprises, and it allowed me to restore my Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro systems back to clean state before the software or problem was added, and was nicer than having to perform a full rebuild.

These days if you want to refresh a system back to a clean healthy state your best options are a system restore point if enabled and available, installation of a clean image overtop of the old data on the hard drive, or a clean build after wiping the drive clean. * Just be sure to backup all data to an external before taking any actions so you dont lose data. Also be sure to install an up to date antivirus and perform a full scan of the external drive or media that the data was backed up on, so you do not reintroduce the problem back if its a viral problem. We had a clerk at one of our customer sites run some kind of Aggressive Registry Cleaner. It completely destroyed our software registry information and made all of our software break and not recognize what other components were installed.

Three guesses who got blamed! Many thanks to all who replied!
Your comments, which were unamous confirmed my suspicions.

Thanks again,
Ivan

Solve : BSOD Netio.sys crashing. uTorrent IPv6 the cause??

Answer»

Hiya

I'm getting serious BLUE screens when CONNECTED to the internet, dump file below.

Running Win7 64bit, I have just UPDATED network drivers for my Realtek Wireless LAN adapter and the Atheros Ethernet controller. I also seem to have a Belkin desktop PCI Card in Network ADAPTERS - not sure if I can disable this as I use wireless LAN via the Realtek?

Anyway here's the dump file. I run MS Security Essentials and cannot see my old AV in "Uninstall" list to see if there are any clashes as I already uninstalled it. I was on BITDEFENDER once.

ONE MORE THING - I see there can be issues with uTorrent and IPv6... should I turn this off? (As per here http://www.durofy.com/fix-driver_irql_not_less_or_equal-netio-sys-bsod/) and if I do, will utorrent die?

Thanks!!

Seems torrenting is the root cause... Thanks for that.

Well then, that thread was most interesting as I also have (HAD) Networx running like that BSOD sufferer.

I have now uninstalled it via Control Panel but is there a way I can see that it is totally gone? This issue is now SOLVED - it was NETWORX running when torrenting.

Removed Networx, and the problem is fixed.

Tho run the program you may have to USE a Vertical Machine.
This allows an old program to run in an environment where is can not easily harm anything. The old programs use a MODE that is not compatible with the 64 bit system.

What error message do you get?
I will assume the issue is with  your  INTERNET Service Provider.
In that case, probable PROBE is this:
Sending requires SMTP protocol. You have it, but your ISP will not allow it. it is a real PITA. The SMTP is use by a local email client to send messages. The ISP BLOCKS it.
Soluition:
Talk to your ISP people.  Ask then to allow you SMTP.
If the will not give permission lo use SMTP, you will have to use a web-based email. Sometimes that is the only recourse.

BTW: This is a problem also for LAPTOP and mobile users. When you go mobile the service  provider has to allow you to send messages, but only using address recognized as belonging to you and with  protocol for mobile devices.
My provider called me this afternoon(judge if this was oppertune). They were checking on how I was getting along with my new connection.
I described my problem, he took control of my puter, (I heard a lot of keys clicking) Now my puter seems it's old self again. I never learned what was amiss. May have been just what you suspected.

Thanks so much for you response!

Keep up the good work!

Do you have a paid Yahoo Mail account?  The free accounts will not work with email clients such as Windows Mail. Thanks for youir reply.

I finally figured out that I needed a paid verson of Yahoo before I could do what I wanted.
I have returned to Windows mail and it is working well.

By the way; Yahoo free mail has an annoying ad panel I can do without.

Thanks for the help.

Solve : Hard Drive says it is FULL. It clearly is NOT!?

Answer»

I have a Lenovo Y570 Ideapad with a 750GB Hard Drive. It is stating that I only have 1 GB of free space, when there is only about 60 GB worth of software installed. I am constantly receiving "Low Disk Space" messages, when I should have TONS of free space left. I have done hours upon hours of research trying to figure out what is causing this problem, and cannot SEEM to find the solution anywhere.

Many people who have encountered similar problems have FIXED it by disabling Windows Restore and deleting the restore points, etc. This is not the problem for me. I have it entirely disabled and have made sure there are no restore points sitting around. In fact, absolutely NONE of the solutions that have worked for other people have worked for me.

I am completely out of ideas. Can somebody with advanced knowledge PLEASE HELP me? I have no idea what to do anymore and my COMPUTER is basically useless in this state.

Please, please help me.

Btw: I have run TreeSize, Spacesniffer AND WinDirStat (all in Administrator mode) and none of them have been able to IDENTIFY what is taking up the space. It just shows up as an enormous chunk of "Unknown" space.

Solve : Windows will not check for updates - error code 800f0900?

Answer»

Hello,

My PC crashed a week ago, and since then, I have not been able to check for Windows updates. I am receiving an error MESSAGE saying: "Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer."

I ran antivirus/spyware scans with BitDefender, SuperAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes, but no threats were discovered. I also ran the System Update Readiness Tool, the Tweaking.com Windows REPAIR tool, and Microsoft's Windows update troubleshooting tool, but nothing has solved the problem. What is my next step in resolving this ISSUE?

I am RUNNING Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1 installed.
Update Support is Free...if you can't get it to run manually call their #800 number. You could try some of the things mentioned here.

Solve : Issue installing Hamachi and other .msi programs?

Answer»

Hey guys.

I seem to have an issue that only WORKS specifically on .msi files at the moment, though I've only tried a limited number of installers; Hamachi, SwitchVPN, and a Java update for CHROME. I'm able to install .exe files such as ShareX and Revo Uninstaller. I have recently USED CCleaner to CLEAN the registry. I have had Hamachi working on this computer in the PAST.

I've spent the past hour googling around this, and I'm utterly stumped. :/

Solve : Windows 7 slow boot?

Answer»

Hello,

I have windows 7 on my PC. The problem I have is that every time I boot all icons is visible, but after 3 sec or so, they all go blank and then slowly start to be visible again one by one.
The PC is only 8-9 months old and it's not slow after I let it get all icons back for a couple of minutes.

Can I fix this somehow?

Thanks in advance,
TischThis has become a topic for discussion here and on other forums. While many users report Windows 7 is very fast to boot up, some SAY it takes a long time on their computers. Somebody claims it takes his 20 min. Of COURSE, boot time is not the main concern. One can ask 'How fast does the machine run after boot up?'
Here is what Microsoft says:
Optimize Windows for better performance
And here is a link to Tom's HARDWARE:
WIN 7 slow boot
Does that HELP

Hello, YES I have. I just simply want to take ownership of all files.

I tried doing the first option on; http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff404240.aspx
but I am confused because I am " Art "  as my username for PC, and I'm Admin too....so?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Of special interest is this: (From link given in #2  post.)

Quote
The default owner of a file or folder is the person who creates the resource. Ownership can be taken or transferred in several ways. The current owner of a file or folder can transfer ownership to another user or group. A member of the Administrators group can take ownership of a file or folder or transfer ownership to another user or group—even if administrators are LOCKED out of the resource according to the permissions. Any user with the Take Ownership permission on the file or folder can take ownership, as can any member of the Backup Operators group (or anyone else with the Restore Files And Directories user right, for that matter).
If somehow an owner of a personal computer has lost his permission and it was not the act of an legit  administrator, it may indicate the presence of malware.
Reference:

I think it was legit because I was Administrator and I've been changing things around..
I'll scan my computer for any infections again and see what happens.

Took a couple screenshots of these;

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I am Username " ROCKY " as my PC Admin name and I was trying to "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects "  Messages popped up and I hit Yes and Continue to all. After it was done I decided to do a test Installing iTUNES but failed. Still the same problem..

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]If your computer clean and doesn't affected by any malware, your problem will be solved easily, just try to search, or just waatch this video i found it on utube may help u

Solve : Computer "races" when opening some websites?

Answer»

Hello,
When I attempt to open some websites the pc SEEMS to want to "race", for a lack of a better word, when downloading or opening..mainly sites that are very busy... I can use another computer, with basically the same setup, and doesn't do it... appears that there are not viruses, etc... this has just started a short time ago..
Would appreciate any feedback one might have...

Larry WollerI would LIKE to add that it only "races" for a short period of time, then stops, as if it had scanned for something...

LarryWhat do you mean by "races"?I am not sure what the right word would be to describe it but I have heard other computers make the same sound, especially when scanning... a buzzing sound perhaps, like maybe the fan turned on briefly...

LarryThe fan is designed to change it's speed up and down based on how hot the CPU is. When you load a web page the CPU will work harder and therefore heat up causing the fan to turn on.I understand.. any ideas on what may be causing the pc to suddenly be doing that??.. it started a few days ago, have been downloading and opening the same pages for over a year or more...nothing has really change in the pc over the last few days... have kept virus control updated with Norton...Or maybe it needs a good cleaning inside??..Did a bit of cleaning C DRIVE using Disk CLEANER and then shutdown, disconnected cables, etc . took the side off and, being careful, did a thorough cleaning using aresol dusting and a small vac.. believe the dust in the pc may have been the issue.. in either case, the issue has been resolved....Good news indeed...glad yer fixed up.

Solve : Unable to create /passwords in windows vista?

    Answer»

    HI everyone

I was given an HP Pavilion dv7-1135nr  64 bit Entertainment Notebook PC running Vista. This pc was used  by one person in a small business network. Although I was able to change the name of the computer, delete the user and create my own, ADMINISTRATOR user, windows will not allow me to make new passwords. This was a real problem when I had a blue screen yesterday (my next post!). When went to restart it in safe mode,a repair option came up on the screen when I selected it ,it asked for an administrator user name and password from a drop down list. I selected the old user but the password I was given did not work.  does anyone think because of the business windows was SET up to prevent new passwords?is there any way I can change it?      Any used PC...no matter from where should get a wipe and a clean install...Thank you.... that makes sense..can I make and use a recovery disc  for that , or would that not be a clean install?I didn't get any discs with it. I'll  ask if if he still has them.If not, what do you think about installing windows 7 or 8? any obvious benefits over Vista? other then I like  7 on my tablet   your opinion would be very welcome..If i buy an os over the net can I  download it..to a FLASH? any other suggestions?
As you can probably tell I'm going to need a lot of  CH's help with this

Thank you  Whenever anyone buys or SELLS a used LAPTOP, there should be all the materials present for the new owner to properly use and maintain the laptop, including the service tag number and user manual.
The forum has a policy of not helping with password resets. The new owner may contact the manufacturer and provide the serial number and request help. But expect the company to charge a modest fee. Oh! ok,  I understand and agree!....The pc was given to me by my brother in law when he updated his business. I'll call him and ask for password and discs. I didn't bother because I've known him since he was 12 and something tells me he won't  have them. Also, the password he gave me did work to log onto windows.Sorry if I gave anyone the wrong impression.let you know how I make out.
Thanks againYou can also check the manuf. site or the Owners Manual...
Since it's a newer  laptop it likely has a hidden restore partition...

Solve : Hard Drive says it's FULL.

Below is a screenshot of what I see when running WinDirStat (as administrator). The MASSIVE Yellow chunk is the "Unknown" space that my computer is completely unable to remove/delete or even identify.

Thanks in advance to anybody who's able to provide any help!

(Edit: And I want to apologize to patio for the previous double post. I just wasn't completely sure of which forum was the most appropriate for the question at hand, so I posted in both in hopes that a moderator would be able to close the wrongful post and point me in the right DIRECTION. I certainly didn't expect you to remove both of them and eliminate any POSSIBILITY of me getting ANY help whatsoever. It won't happen again, Sir.)The first thing you want to do is run full scans with BOTH your installed ANTI virus app and with MalwareBytes.

Solve : How do I secure separate login accounts from viruses??

    Answer»

Essentially, can two login accounts on ONE PC - lets say "Andrew" and "BEN" - be secure and ISOLATED from each other?

Let's say "Andrew" has sensitive personal information and should not have direct access to the Internet.

"Ben" can connect to the Internet but cannot share data directly with "Andrew".

Can I accomplish this with minimal difficulties?Yes. Assume you are using Windows something lather than Windows XP.
Any user who has administrator level can  GET into the other user accounts.
So in your example you shall lower the level of authority of one or more users.

Solve : No GRLDR after installing Hiren's on USB Flash Drive?

    Answer»

I just installed Hiren's on my USB Flash Drive, and every time I try to boot Vista without it, I get this error message:

    Try (hd0,0): NTFS5: No grldr
    Try (hd0,1): non-MS: skip
    Try (hd0,2): NTFS5: No grldr
    Try (hd0,3) invalid or null
    Try (fd0): invalid or null

    Cannot find GRLDR.

Press space bar to hold the screen, any other key to boot previous MBR.

Please help! I can't boot Vista without this Flash Drive! The PROBLEM you describe has happened before. A search through the CH archives shows that others have had difficulty using the program. You mentioned. That program is not from Microsoft, nor is it recommended by Microsoft, nor is it needed for normal operation of your computer.
With Vista f or any other Windows operating system having a backup plan is a requirement, not really an option. It is the user's responsibility to schedule and make backups on a regular basis. Windows does not do that for you, unless you ask it to.
Yes, I know it sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I really am trying to be as nice as possible. What you have done is your own responsibility. Having said that, here are the steps you can take to recover your system.
You already should have a spare hard drive. If you don't, now is the time to acquire one. On a brand-new or clean used drives, do a complete installation of Windows with the appropriate drivers for your computer. Having done that, you'll be able to take the old drive and make it a slave on your computer. Then you'll be able to access it as the second drive and get  the important files you have on the original hard drive.
Although this is a time-consuming process, it is predictable and RELATIVELY easy and does not require great knowledge or understanding of how the system works. Basically, you just start over again and recover your documents from the old drive. Fairly simple.
Otherwise, trying to FIGURE out what has been damaged in  the operating system is a slow trial and error process. Unless you already GONE through this before. It is possible to recover using a repair disk, but it needs to be a repair disk that works according to the Microsoft rules. You create such a repair disk after you do a clean install of the operating system. All this has been documented here on this site and also in the Microsoft knowledge base.
Any time a person gets a new computer with the Microsoft operating system on it, creation of a repair or recovery disk should be considered  s  needed task. The restore PARTITION provided by the manufacturer does not let you preserve your data in the documents and settings file. The restore partition is only an emergency method to get the system back to the original factory settings. The user has to make his own scheme n for saving his documents and settings.
That is about all I have to say on that the subject. I for one, and some others here, do not recommend using the program that you put  on your computer.

Solve : Batch file to copy files but not copy the batch file??

    Answer»

    Hi,

I have a very simple BATCH file script to copy files in the current folder to another folder, but it also copies the actual .bat file. How can I EXCLUDE the .bat file from also being copied?

here is what I have so far:

    copy /-Y *.xml F:\\Test
    Exit

    I tried this:

except *.bat copy /-Y *.xml F:\\Test
    Exit

with and without brackets but it does not work.

    Any help WOULD be appreciated.
    Jaime

The simple way is to have the batch file itself in another directory.
Let's say your stuff in in D:STUFF
and the bat file name MYBAT.BAT is in D:\BAT
then  go into D:STUFF directory  and give the command
    d:\bat\mybat
Which will only operate on files in the current directory and sub directories.

Sounds LIKE a good workaround, but I would like for it to send files from the current dir. rather than pull files from the current dir.

The target folder is a watched folder where all files in it are pulled into a translations program and automatically added to a TRANSLATION workflow project. So I do want to avoid adding any files to the watched folder that do not belong there.

    Jaime
If you use the copy command with the *.xml filemask then only files with extension .xml will be copied, and files with the extension .bat (or any other extension except .xml) will be ignored. Check your code.

Yes, sorry, I meant to write *.* so as to copy all files in the directory.

    Thanks,
    Jaime
You can use a FOR loop and DIR to list the files to copy and skip the batch file's own name (which is %0) (that is a ZERO)

    Code: [Select]echo off
    for /f "delims=" %%A in ('dir /b /a-d') do if not "%%A"=="%0" copy /-Y "%%A" F:\\Test

Solve : Help with windows 7 internet connection?

    Answer»

    Hey guys,
I have windows 7 and one day something went wrong. It says that I'm connected to the Internet. Everything appears FINE until I open up a browser. I usually use Firefox and everytime I open it up the browser is blank. I thought it might just be Firefox so I tried Internet explorer and it says cannot load page. I've tried for a long time to try to fix it so if anyone can please help me! Thank you in advance!Do  yopu have another computer? In not, ask a friend the bring a laptop to your house and SEE if he can get the internet. Also, some smartphone and use your Wi-Fi if you enter the routers password form the wireless. The purpose of this is to verify that y our local SERVICE is working.

Yea I have laptops and my phone HOOKED up to the wifi and they all work fine. It's just my actual computer. Was there and unusual changes made to this problem computer recently? That might give a clue as to why you no longer get Internet.
Did you recently have any virus issues?
Did you install any strange  programs?

The standard rule for Windows 7 is to try to install again  the drivers for the device your are using. After that, do the network setup Wizard again.

What exactly says your connected ? ?

Does it work wired ? ?

    Solve : Not Exactly Sure?

    Answer»

I don't know what's going on with my desktop. It stopped working, like it would start up and then just... go to a blank screen and the monitor would say nothing detected after having just shown the black screen with the window.

So I had a buddy who knows computers look at it and he saw a problem with the motherboard. So I replaced the motherboard but the problem persisted. So another site and several other friends said it would be the cpu, so I replaced the cpu today. Fired it up and it went to the black screen with the windows loading, then to the repair windows screen. After selecting it goes to load, then just... the display stops and the monitor says no connection detected.

I have no clue what the problem could be at this point. We tried my friend's motherboard with my graphics card, hard drive, and power source and it started up fine. So... I don't know, I'm out of ideas.

Using windows 7, corsair 16 memory... not sure on the rest. >.< I'm not exactly a hardcore computer person. Quote

We tried my friend's motherboard with my graphics card, hard drive, and power source and it started up fine. So... I don't know, I'm out of ideas.

Did you checked your monitor, video cable and RAM (alternately) also? Hey! Thanks for the QUICK reply.

We used my RAM sticks on his motherboard when we tried it. The monitors and cables both work fine as far as I can tell. We swapped out cables with some he had spare and the problem remained.Okay, just started it up again on the right monitor and it took me to the windows failed to start screen.

There I selected repair automatically and it went to the loading screen which is where it goes blank and the monitor pops up the "no signal detected" screen.Use onboard video if available and one stick of RAM alternately on different slots starting on first channel slot. REMOVE any connected or unwanted peripherals except for mouse and keyboard. A hardware RESET or CMOS removal for a couple of minutes may be needed to RECONFIGURE the default settings.Okay, I've done all those. It went to the "Window failed to repair automatically" where I then went to try to use an earlier setting and mid-trying to get there it gave the familiar suddenly black screen and "no input detected". Can you boot to safemode? Try using a Linux bootable CD and see if the video problem exist from there - Puppy or UBUNTU

Solve : keyboard mouse stopped working after improper shutdown?

    Answer»

    Hi,

the issue i am facing--- yesterday my laptop got shutdown because of power loss after that

    -      on booting win 7 i got a BSoD bad_system_config error three times then
    -      On my fourth attempt the win7 os started to boot again but the keyboard and mouse were not working (both external usb and internal).

    My system details--------

    asus k53sv laptop with

    1.  i5 processor  2. 8gb ddr2 ram(2sticks of 4gb)     3. geforce gt540 graphics card  4. 750gb seagate hdd(with 4 partitions(199gb*2 ,288gb*1,10gb*1)

    5.  3usb ports(1*usb 3.0  , 2*usb2.0)

I have a dual boot config so Both 199gb partitions have os namely winxp pro and win 7 pro.

    WHAT I HAVE TRIED

    1. Safe mode does not work i.e keyboard mouse do not work(both usb external and internal do not work)

2.win 7 repair found no errors

3.Do not have a Restore point so could not restore it to previous working condition.

4.Tried to shut down laptop remove battery and power and press power button for 20 -25 second release the button then PUT everything back again..

5.Done online spyware bot scan,Malwarebytes scan, avast FREE scan.(from win xp)

    OBSERVATIONS

1.keyboard mouse work completely fine in BIOS and in win xp.

2.The keyboard light goes off as soon as the win 7 welcome screen is shown.

3.Initially in the second try win 7 os was detecting external keyboard showed installing devices notification but then did nothing.

NOW  external usb keyboard and mouse are not detected at all in any of the three usb ports.

    what i am trying

    1. Find the win 7 startup folder from win xp and add teamviewer shortcut so i can remotely control the PC and remove all keyboard and mouse drivers.

2  There is a BCDEDIT method in win 7 repair regarding BSOD bad config error checking up more on that.

ANY SUGGESTION IS WELCOME AND I WILL BE ONLINE ALL DAY IF U WANT ANY OTHER DETAIL JUST ASK ALSO.I WANT TO TRY EVERYTHING BEFORE FORMATTING.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE
NOTE-right now win 7 boots up fine only issue keyboard and mouse not working in both normal mode or safe mode.Have you re-installed the ASUS keyboard/pad drivers ? ?
how can i do that without any input device available within the windows environment? Try it in safemode...
    Try an External mouse...

Barring that the Tab + arrow keys can navigate enuff to install a driver...i've done it many times.hi patio thanks for the info but as i mentioned in my post in the 3rd line and the last line. The keyboard and mouse(both internal and usb external) are not working in both safe mode and normal mode.So doing anything from within windows is impossible without any input device whatsoever.

    thanksExternal mouse and keyboard then...
There are settings on laptops that DISABLE both...have you checked thats not engaged ? ?

It'll be in the Manual...or at the laptop manuf. site.yeah someone else in another forum pointed the same thing out so i checked i have a touchpad disable function that works only internal touchpad other than that there are no more input device disable functions available .SO we can rule that one out.
thanksCan you get to a Restore point from the advanced boot menu ? ?i have no restore points(big mistake). So cant use restore.Bummer...

Solve : Windows 7 on HP pavilion 23-b231 (designed for W8)?

    Answer»

I modified/customized my HP pavilion 23-b231 to use windows 7 ultimate x64 instead of windows 8, worked fine/great until recently... I went to start it up the other day, and it won't boot. At first start up it brings me to menu with option to either repair windows (which I tried, but get an error message: a required device isn't connected or can't be ACCESSED.) or start windows normally.
When I choose start normally it automatically takes me to windows repair and gives same error message.

I tried to boot from CD/USB and when I select repair your computer option, I get error msg: The version of System Recovery Options is not COMPATIBLE with the version of windows you are trying to repair.

So I tried to Re-Install, and I get this error message:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style.

But I already HAD it installed before, and functioning great...

I do NOT want to re-format my hard DRIVE and loose all my info/programs etc.

Can anybody help me with this problem?
    Or anybody have any ideas/suggestions?
Windows 8 uses GPT but can use MBR.
Windows 7 uses MBR but can use GPT.
GPT & MBR are partitioning schemes, not formatting schemes.
You can Google the differences & the black hole you have fallen into.
The BIOS & System Recovery are all expecting Windows 8.  ATTEMPT a repair from the Windows 7 DVD, set DVD as 1st boot device.

The boot MANAGER has become corrupted (don't know how) & needs repair.  This must be done outside of Windows.  Windows 8 might still be on the hard drive along with Windows 7.
You can create a bootable CD of MiniTool Partition Wizard or AEOMI Partition Assistant which might be able to accomplish a repair.

Can Windows 7 Home Premium be installed onto an ASUS ASPIRE ONE netbook? Or is it too big? Thank you.I had an Aspire One AOA150 netbook with a 120G hdd and 1GB of RAM and installed and ran Win 7 Pro on it for about 4 years.  Later I upgraded it to Win 8.1.

If you have a similar Aspire One MODEL then yes, Win 7 Home Premium can be installed on it.I have Win 7 on my Emachine notebook with about the same hardware that you have. Quote from: mandrakeman47 on September 29, 2014, 04:55:35 PM

==================================================1) Have you recently installed any new hardware?
    2) Have you recently installed or updated any drivers?
    3) Is Windows Updated set to automatically update drivers?
    4) Please open device manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?
    5) Are you doing anything specific when you get the bsod?1) Have you recently installed any new hardware?
When my hard drive crashed at the end of April, I had to re-install everything once I got the new one. Then when the operating system crashed a couple of weeks ago, I had to do everything you do to re-install a new operating system because none of the repairs would work.

    2)Drivers up to date?
In the device manager, it appears as if everything is ok. No yellow or red symbols. Windows update is set to automatically update all important updates.

    3) When I have had some recent problems, I have been using Microsoft Office products... Excel, Word. But I frequently have at least Google Chrome open and a Word document/Excel spreadsheet. Okay - first of all in the future you need to tell us everything in your first post. All of this information is important in troubleshooting.

The error you are getting is most often caused by either new hardware or a problem with a driver. From where did you obtain the drivers (laptop drivers should always and only be obtained from the website of the laptop manufacturer). If you got them from ANYWHERE other than the Dell website, you need to replace them with the Dell drivers. The way to do that is to go to the Dell support website, enter your service tag number, and download and install the appropriate drivers for your system.

You said you reinstalled the OS. Since it was a new hd, you couldn't have done that from a recovery partition so I have to ask two questions: First, did you install the same OS as was originally installed when the system SHIPPED? And SECOND, did you use an original, retail OS disc or a disc provided by Dell or something else?

And last, since MS Office seems to be involved are you using an original, legitimate copy of Office?I have used all the legitimate ways of installing every thing. I have a Windows 7 disc and I download Microsoft Office through my university. I don't know how the drivers were installed when I put the new hard drive in, I just let the computer start running and updating things on its own.

I just ran a diagnostic on Dell's website and it says,

"Replace Hard Drive. Your hard drive is operating outside of normal parameters and should be replaced. Consider reviewing the No BOOT section in this Dell Knowledge Base article to identify the most common solutions for your Hard Drive. "

It is still under warranty because I just got it in May, so I can replace it again. But can you guess as to what has happened to this one since I don't seem to have a malware or virus problem according to those sorts of software. I believe that to be the reason why it crashed in April. I don't know what you mean about drivers installing on their own. Drivers don't install on their own. If you are using a Windows 7 dvd, after installation you need to go to the Dell website and download and install all appropriate drivers starting with the chipset driver. If you are using a regular Windows 7 dvd (and not an OEM install disc) didn't install the drivers, I have no idea how they were installed. Ok so it sounds like that is probably the source of the problems when I didn't download at least the chipset driver first. I went ahead and downloaded but its happened out of order. (I don't know how to uninstall drivers, so I can re-install them in order)

Do you think the damage has already been done on this hard drive or is there a way to fix it?
Sorry, I always say chipset driver first because in the "old days" that's how it had to be done. These days it really doesn't make a difference. If you went to the Dell website and downloaded and installed the drivers from there you should be okay.

From your second post above it only shows 1 bsod. If you've only had one or two I wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about it. However, if it continues to happen please publish a Speccy report:

    • Go to Piriform's website, and click the big button.
    • Next, click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version.
    • You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
    • After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted FOLDER and double-click on Speccy.
    • Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
    • Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot
    • You will see the following prompt:
    • Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
    • Now, once you are back in the forum TOPIC you are posting in, click the button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.
    • Congrats! You have just posted your specs!

Solve : laptop lag HP elitebook 8460p?

    Answer»

    Hi,

I am seeking help cause since a few WEEKS my laptop HP eliteoobk 8460p is badly lagging (4 GB RAM, HD intel graphics 3000).  I tried everything to find the reason for the lag. I made a new win 7 installation, I got the latest drivers, I cleaned the fan, no malware/spyware/virus detected (malwarebytes/Avira), I made chkdsk, all that stuff, nothing helped. I am still laging, my poweroptions are on high performance, also my graphic card settings are on high performance. The lag is there no matter if its plugged in or on battery. It even lagging sometimes, when I write a letter in word.

a few weeks ago I could play any game without any lag and then suddenly it startet. The strange thing is, that I only lag in some games. Some games are running just fine without any lag or sound stuttering and some are unplayable. I dont think its overheating, since the cpu monitoring software shows no threads (I think).

I am wondering, if there is any software, that can detect what causes the lag reason ? I am pretty much a total noob in these things, any help would be much appreciated !

thank you in advance !Have you looked at system resources when this lag is happening such as what programs are running in windows task manager, and what the CPU cores show for usage.

Lag could be an update happening in the background or virus scan happening in backgrand etc. Usually if its any of these causes it would be more likely at the start of the use of the computer unless you happened to turn it on and it happened to have a scheduled time to run an update or scan.

Also, does the Hard Disk LED show lots of activity when this is happening or none?

If its lagging and the CPU is not busy, then i would suggest running memtest86 on the system to make sure that the memory is healthy. http://www.memtest86.com/hello,

and ty for your answer. I started the laptop in safe mode and its not lagging at all in safe mode. I dont know about the games, since I cant start them in safe mode, but GOOGLE and all the other things works perfectly. In normal mode the laptop lags, no matter how long its on, not only even after start up. I think the hard disk shows not so many activity, I am not sure, as I said, I am pretty much a newbie in these things. Would it help, if I post a screenshot here ? And if yes, which screenshot would help ?

thank you very much !A screen shot of task manager showing what processes are running and CPU % usage would help, from when you are running normal mode where the lag is happening. This way we can see what processes are running that may be slowing it down.

    Process to do this:

     CTRL + ALT + Delete
    Select Task Manager
    Select Processes Tab
Select Show Processes from all users at bottom of window ( you will have to enter a password here for admin ir you are running as user )
Click on CPU column ( to have the most % value on top, so processes that are busy show on top of list )
Maximize the window to show as many as possible processes on list
    Then press print screen key
And launch mspaint to paste screenshot to or use what ever application you like to create the screenshot.
    Then share here.

    hi again

    so here is the screenshot

    http://f.666kb.com/i/csfecu485ry63zog7.png

I opend also a game, so that you can see the cpu usage, when i am in the game.

thank you !Looks like the game is DARK Realm ... is that game one of the ones that lags on you? Also which other games lag, and which ones do not lag so i can look for something in common between them?

Linked the game here in case others want to check it out... looks like a fun game, and doesnt require a powerful computer to play it.

    http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/27735/dark-realm-queen-of-flames-collectors-edition/index.html

Looking through the list, nothing pops out at me as being a problem. 87% system idle shows that nothing is bogging down your CPU to cause the game to lag according to screenshot info of the task manager.

thank you Dave for looking into it !

so all games from Mad Head games like this one >> http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/27735/dark-realm-queen-of-flames-collectors-edition/index.html
i can play without any lag.

all games from (for example) ERS games like this one >> http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/14467/dark-tales-eap-premature-burial-collectors/index.html
i cant play, cause its constantly lagging. (in 10 times when I try to play the game, it does not lag maybe 1 time, so very little OFTEN I can play it for short time without lag).

the graphics are in both games very good (for a small hidden object game). Also I tried to play league of legends online, i could play without any lag, world of tanks is not possible, I dont know if that information would be useful. A few weeks ago I could play everything without any problems. I dont know if the Hard Drive is maybe defect, in my non pro humble opinion I would say no, since it would also not work in other games that dont lag.

    thank you !

    Solve : SSD Problem??

    Answer»

I have recently INSTALLED a SSD 240gb. First I 'cloned' c drive with the included s/ware. This did not work out well as the PC booted to the old HDD. I removed the old drive and did a clean install on the SSD and transferred files back from the old HDD, then removed it. Now at boot, Windows Boot Manager page comes up with a choice of two OS both Win 7. There is physically only one drive in the PC. There is no sign of a Windows.old on the system. I have cleared CMOS etc. I would like for it to boot straight AWAY as that is why I bought an SSD!  Any ideas please. Quote from: alexma on September 29, 2014, 09:56:43 AM

I removed the old drive and did a clean install on the SSD and transferred files back from the old HDD

    What files did you transfer?
See Here...Also to add to this... with both SSD and HDD originally connected in the clone attempt, Windows installation may have detected the other Windows installation on the other drive and installed to the SSD as a dual OS installation which gives you a choice at boot for one or the other. Then removing the HDD and having the SSD remaining the boot manager isnt smart enough to test for this HDD and so it boots off of the SSD and gives option for the HDD which is no longer connected. If this is the case then its a simple fix as shared in Patio's link.

However if you had the cloned copy of Windows onto the SSD and then decided that that wasnt working out so well and decided to then perform a clean installation, Windows on installation searches drives for Windows installations. It is possible to breeze past an important option to not have the other Windows installation remain, and so you can have 2 installations of Windows on the same drive, one that is functional and the other that is not, or you can have 2 installations of the same OS both functional. The problem here is that each installation takes up drive SPACE and so if this is what happened then you will have to determine which Windows install is the one that you do not want and manually delete it to get say 20GB back which is otherwise wasted with the initial install that you really want gone from the drive, but otherwise remained through the process of the 2nd installation.First of all Thank you Patio, your solution did the trick. Secondly, DaveLembke, how would I know if there are two OS's on the drive simultaneously running or otherwise? Quote
DaveLembke, how would I know if there are two OS's on the drive simultaneously running or otherwise?

They wouldnt be running simultaneously, only 1 runs at a time unless you create and use virtual machines with VMware etc. If the install wasnt 100% clean in which the SSD was not completely formatted before the OS was installed to it, it could be possible for Windows to detect a prior copy of Windows already installed to that drive, and for Windows to install a fresh copy alongside the old install.

Its more common when upgrading Windows that it creates a Windows.Old folder. Pretty much if you look at C: and dont see any duplicate folders with the Windows name, then your good, but if you found one that is like Windows.Old, then its wasted space and could be removed. More info on this at the link below.

Solve : Toshiba (L355D-S7901) laptop all black screen, turns on, though.?

    Answer»

Oookay, so I've creeped through google and here a bit, but didn't see anyone else having quite my problem I guess... and all  the things i've tried haven't worked.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7901 laptop. I've had it for like 5-6 years, no longer under warranty, it's had quite a bit of problems but I've always been able to fix it through google search. (Or just hand it over for warranty work when I had it lol)
It's running windows vista home premium.

It was totally fine for many months, then yesterday every time I closed it and opened it up again, the time/date would turn to January 1 2008, 12:00 AM. And chrome wouldn't let me go to a few sites saying it wasn't secure or whatever till I changed the date/time. But after I changed the time it was totally fine. Then, I figured i'd reset it cause it was getting annoying and I thought it'd fix it (I wish I just kept changing the time lol)
When I reset it, the screen stayed black, but the battery/AC light was on and the fan was goin. That's still all it does. And it gets hot fast, but it sometimes shuts itself off when its not very hot. So i'm not sure it overheats when it gets real hot, since it does the exact same when it's not.
The screen is just completely black, never shows it's starting to boot up, no cursor, nothin.

I've tried restarting it through the power button quite a bit, I've taken out the charger/battery and draining the static charge (is that what it's called?) for 30-60 seconds and reconnecting the cord... Done that like 10 times maybe... Took out the RAM stick(s) and put them back in... Tried F8, F10,FU  --- CTRL ALT DEL.. CTRL SHIFT ESC....

I DUNNO. If I have to get new RAM sticks, a motherboard, or hard drive, that's alright, I guess.
halp plz thxReplace the CMOS battery...part #CR2032...available anywhere. Quote

Replace the CMOS battery...part #CR2032...available anywhere.

This is actually a laptop, so it would actually be a small battery pack instead of a 2032 usually, although I have seen 2032's heatshrink wrapped with a plug on a short length of wire before on some older Dells so its not completely impossible for it to not be a 2032, but 99% chance its not a 2032 battery in the laptop, and if it is a 2032 that is in a shrink wrap with a small cable coming out of it, its best to buy the exact replacement than to boil the battery trying to solder the 2 wires to + and - on top and bottom side. If I had to install a 2032 or convert to a 2032, I think I would get a 2032 button/coin cell socket off of an old motherboard or buy one new and solder to the socket the correct polarity and then either shrink wrap, hot glue, or electrical tape to seal it up so that it couldnt short against anything inside the laptop as well as add 2 sided tape to affix it from being loose inside.

All you need really is 3V ... in total desperation ( with a desktop computer) a while back ( 15 years ago ) I used 2 x AA batteries with a AA Battery Cradle from Radio Shack for a 486 computer when the Lithium that was soldered directly to the motherboard died. cut the 2 legs off the leaking lithium then bought for $1.95 at Radio Shack a 2 x AA black plastic battery cradle, then just wire up + to + and - to - and add 2 x AA batteries for 1.5V x 2 = 3V and i used the sticky velcro that i had available to stick it to the side of the power supply.

But I agree that the CMOS battery is bad if its losing its date/time.Ahh, thanks y'all.
Err, I'm not too sure what kinda battery this is exactly?
I don't see ANY numbers, letters, anything. (I guess I shoulda got out my good camera, but there's not much to it anyway.)

I'm guessing this is what I need?
    http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/sanyo-ml1220-tj1-rechargeable-coin-cell-w-2-pin-vertical-mount-96862922.htm
    And... Solder it?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]This is hilarious. But ignore the funny part. The last shows how to open a Toshiba and get to the CMOS cell.

Unfortunately, mine isn't that easy to get to the battery..  lol

Soldering temperatures are in the 450°F to 650°F range.
If a component is not soldered, do not try to solder it. Instead, use an alternative method of attachment.  Mechanical clip, spot weld or superconductive adhesive are alternatives to solider. I would suggest liquid solder used very carefully.

You have never seen a pack assembled by a cell manufacturer or any other pack manufacturer where CONNECTIONS are soldered directly to a cell. There is a reason.

directly to the nickel-cadmium cells, only to solder tabs or wire leads.
A hot soldering iron placed directly on the cell is likely to cause seal
ring and vent seal damage as well as damage to the SEPARATOR systems."
Yeah, I know you can't solder batteries.... but the little tab things? To connect to the board? For a second?

I'd definitely like to use something more like liquid solder, or something.
If anybody thinks they know how to solder to a small battery, here is the tesat.
Hold a copper penny between the thumb and index of the left had. With your right hand and your teeth use a small solder iron to tack a wire to the penny using low temperature solder.  It has lead, might be hard to find.
If you have to drop the penny after twenty seconds.. you lose!  Never exactly heard it described that way... My guess is that Geek has tried this test

I have been tested as well with other stuff working in electronics shops etc where people show off their skills and those who have a high tolerance for pain or nerve damage might succeed with the soldering of the penny and say ... see i did it! LOL

The one test I would never do that some did to show off in electronics manufacturing was wetting your finger and dipping it in and out of MOLTEN lead in the solder pot quickly which was used for tinning thru hole components for mil-spec builds where not just specific parts had to be used, but they also had to be retinned before installation in PCB's. A wet finger protected you from getting burned if you did it fast enough as the lead wouldnt stick to your skin and you would have a poof of steam, as well as you wouldnt be burned or blistered. ((( Do not try this at home )))

That was a stupid test. The best test was a series of resistors all soldered in a box ( cube ) form and telling the new ET to solve the resistance from corner to corner of the resistor cube which was a 3D cube of resistors soldered together without cheating with a multimeter. Do the math for all resistors parallel and in series and give your answer, where those in parallel drop the resistance and those in series add the ohms. Nothing like making the green horn ET break a sweat to show he has the skills freshly hired out of college or off the street to solve a ohms law problem with all the resistors part of the equation. those who were successful didnt waste their time staring at the cube and wrote down what the cube would be in 2D as a circuit and then solved that on paper!..LOLBy the way this battery if its the same one you have in your laptop: http://us.ebid.net/for-sale/sanyo-ml1220-tj1-rechargeable-coin-cell-w-2-pin-vertical-mount-96862922.htm

It should be pretty easy to solder in. However I'd take a pair of dikes and cut the legs off the old battery. then solder the new battery to the old legs in respect to the proper polarity!!! This cutting of the legs of the component will protect you from overheating the board and damaging any internal traces that are connected to the 3VDC battery. * Just be sure the tip of the dike doesnt dig into the board surface and you are only cutting the old battery legs off to be able to apply the new battery in place of it.

*** If you were really skilled at soldering for removing and replacing components with solder sucker etc, i'd go the route of a complete removal, but many people out there struggle to remove parts without damaging the board that they are in. Common problem is overheating the barrel and burning the board as well as ripping the barrel out of the board that the leg is stuffed into, or breaking a via and you end up with an open circuit. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_%28electronics%29Coool. Ah, makes sense. Thanks :3
I think it's the same... It's the closest thing I've seen to mine anywhere. Someone recommended it for my laptops model on some other page.

I'm not skilled. I've maybe soldered something once awhileee ago. But, i'm not a idiot (I like to think) + my dad knows more about this, and was an electrician for a bit so.... I should get enough help all around to do it.

Is it a better idea to get a lower heat iron? (or lower Watt)Buy one with solder tabs.
CR2032 Lithium Battery with Solder Tabs
At Amazon it sells for under $4 plus shipping .

Dear OP, please give up on the idea of using a solder iron. Yes, some of us hobbyists do it all the time, even though we know better. It is like a challenge. Like shaving with a hunting knife. A macho thing.so... I'm supposed to get a battery with solder tabs, but not solder it? How's it supposed to attach, then? (and that battery wouldn't work, the two tabs need to be next to each other. I'm quite sure I already posted a link to a battery with solder tabs, in the right place, that will work though)

Meh, now i'm getting pretty determined. I'll most likely obviously practice on something not important first to figure it out more, though.

Solve : Help with Elgato Game Capture?

    Answer»

    Hi there,

My son has an Elgato game capture card but we do not have a laptop that WORKS with it. The required system requirements are:

Windows 7, Windows 8 or later
    • 2.0 Ghz (or higher) dual core CPU, or 2.0 Ghz (or higher) multi-core i3, i5 or i7 CPU
    SOUND card
    • 4GB Total Installed RAM (or higher)
    • Built-in USB 2.0 port

Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced laptop that meets these requirements?

    Many thanks

FenboyinspainAccording to online reviews I have seen one person state that they had this running on a Pentium D capturing 59.96 frames per second. So processing power for this capture DEVICE doesnt have to be overly powerful. I think the biggest concern will be what games are played on the laptop to make sure that the CPU and most importantly the GPU is rated high enough to play the games. Pretty much any new dual-core system 2GHZ or faster with HDMI connection would work best with this device. The biggest concern is the games to be played to make sure you have a laptop that can play those games as well as potential of some future games that may demand more than the bare minimum of a current game so that your not stuck with a laptop that lasts 2 years and then having to buy a new one because the GPU is too weak.

When it comes to gaming I always suggest a desktop computer as for generally to support a longer lifespan of gaming its usually just a matter of upgrading a video card and keeping with the rest of the original computer. Desktop computers for gaming last on average 4 years before there is a real need to upgrade CPU or replace the system, and depending on the complexity of the game, a game such as World of Warcraft can still run on a 10 year old desktop if needed, although video settings may need to be set to below normal to have 30-40 frames per second. If playing OLDER games, then just about any newer laptop or desktop should work, however before buying one run by us the make and model and what games are to be played on it and we can state if its a good match or offer a similar better model etc. Thanks Dave, great info.

As it happens, he plays the games on XBox and only uses the Elgato to 'capture' the info which he then puts on to You Tube.oh ok... what type of budget do you have and is this laptop going to be used for any gaming or just web surfing and checking e-mail?

    Solve : Bitlocker nightmare?

    Answer»

If I am posting in the wrong forum feel free to move me.
I have a EXTERNAL hard drive that we use to back up files in my home office. The lady who works for me then takes it home just in case, you know tornado, fire, theft, etc. I decided to encrypt the files in case she lost the hard drive. Opps.

I started the windows 7 oem bitlocker. First off I dont think I put in the proper password. However I did save the key on a usb drive. The encryption was going to take hours, so I turned off the screen saver and went to bed. 2nd opps.

When I came back the next morning the program was not RUNNING. I have tried and tried to get it to decrypt but nope not happening. Is there any hope? Or did I just LOSE my data? The data is not lost...it's still there...
However the interupption in th e process has wonked things'

See Here...Thanks Patio your are always such a help.
Ok before I start I noticed this.
    2. Type bcdedit /debug on to enable kernel debugging for the operating system drive.
The drive I need to decrypt is a removable drive. Does the command bcdedit need to be different to reflect using the E: drive?Well I must be doing something wrong. After ENTERING the recovery key I get,  bit locker drive encryption (E:) not responding.Just a update.
I tried everything and could not get the drive to work. Bitlocker will lock the computer up and I had to go to taskmanager to stop the program. I give up microsoft wins. I took the drive apart and smashed it to bits so no one can get my info.
I do not recommend bitlocker as if you have any kind of problem you will lose your data. I have never recommended it...
