Solve : Windows 7 Starter Refuses to update?

Answer»

Greetings,

Have a old netbook that i did a factory reset on. Has Windows 7 Starter and seems to be snappy enough for a cheap little internet machine. However, it keeps shooting an error at trying to update. Is there anything i can do to force it to update?

Thanks in Advance. Often when you load a old image of windows 7 you can have problems installing updates.
Microsoft has a tool to help fix this called the windows update readness tool.
You can download the VERSION for your windows EITHER 32 or 64 bit from here https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=947821THANK YOU.

its been a few weeks so im sorry about the late reply. however one of these did work, and it triggered all 195 and some odd updates to flow in, ALLOWING modern WEB BROWSING and such to work.

Thank you kindly.

Solve : Steal Focus - looking to install and uninstall tweakui to fix it??

Answer»

I have had "do not steal focus" on this computer for about 6-7 years. I got used to it, but I as someone once said "it will BEGIN to drive you crazy". My memory isn't great, so I cannot remember how I originally installed it

Here is what I have tried :

1) installed tweakui. This didn't work as it won't show up in my control panel.
2) whenever I boot, the ERROR comes up says "cannot find tweak.cpl" or something. I have to CLICK it OK each time the computer restarts.
3) Using revo uninstaller to try and find the Tweak UI and the Steal focus, but there are not to be found

So two questions

1) how can I remove traces of tweakui - and get rid of the boot window that say "cannot find tweakui.cpl (which is the control panel icon I believe)
2) How can I turn off = steal focus?

Thanks in advanceWas this not clear? I am not sure how long to WAIT for a response or MAYBE there isn't enough info?

Solve : Microsoft Frontpage 2000 error message?

Answer»

I did an update on some things to my website - I use microsoft frontpage 2000 - and in doing so, it all of a sudden stopped WORKING for me. I made my changes, saved them and hit the 'publish' button. It starts to upload all changes then GETS to 'publishing web updates' and then shuts down with an error message of 'the server unexpectedly closed the connection'.

I have 2 websites that are used with this same program. I can make changes and publish them just fine on one of the sites but all of a sudden I am not ABLE to do so on the other.

Any suggestions? So your computer is still useable with the exception of when you try to update the web page correct? If that is the case why not deal with the web site administrator for assistance? truenorthQuote from: truenorth on March 19, 2012, 03:06:36 PM

I'm not sure that talking to themselves is likely to clear up the problem...I never have had a personal web page but my wife has had some. In every case while she has been responsible for MAINTAINING the page in all it's aspects there HAS always been a service to which she has subscribed that actually provides the vehicle for the site to exist. Could that NOT be the case in this instance? truenorth
P.S/ It just came to me aren't they called "hosts" ?
P.P.S Don't however rule out the advantages of talking to one's self. I have revised MANY a would be bad decision by doing just that. Sounds like a connection issue to me...

Solve : BSoD and STOP Error Message?

Answer»

We have Windows Vista Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.

We are seeing BSoD and STOP Error Message 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x2039304D, 0x805996BC, 0x805993B8)

Above the error message numbers at the BOTTOM of the screen was a NOTE about BIOS updates. We turned the thing off, on again, and then hit F12. Up popped a short menu of options: Internal HDD, CD/DVD/DC-RW Drive, Onboard NIC, BIOS Setup, Diagnostics.

Where do we go from here? And thanks so much for your help.internal hd. Then Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyHi Allan,

Thanks for your so quick response. I understood very little. I think you are maybe speaking ANOTHER LANGUAGE, and request a translation please.

Also, I cannot do a screen shot as I am typing to you on another computer.

Thanks,
JillChoose internal hd. Then, assuming the SYSTEM boots successfully, follow the rest of the instructions.Thanks. No joy. Any suggestions what to do next?No joy with what? What did you do and what happened?Life intervened.

We followed your suggestion, but the computer did not boot.

On another try, my husband chose the diagnostics from the menu and it came up Error Code 2000-0123 Memory Integrity Test.

To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

Solve : DVD/Blu-Ray drive won't load disk after being burned.?

Answer»

DVD/Blu-Ray drive won't load disk after being burned.

An internal DVD/Blu-Ray drive, that I've used for years, now won't load a DVD disk that I've just burned.

When I load a blank DVD or Blu-Ray disk, it 'spins up' like normal, and am successfully able to burn to it. But after closing the burner drawer, the DVD disk won't 'spin up', and when I click on the drive in Windows Explorer, a box pops up with 'Insert a disc Please insert a disc into Drive D: Help me choose a disc'.

I am able to load a prior Blu-Ray disc that I've burned, but not any of my burned DVD disks.

It seems that, somehow, the DVD functionality has been 'turned off'.

Anyone know what's causing this, and how to fix it?

Thanks!A disc that was burned on that burner that is unable to be read. i would take to a different COMPUTER and see if the disc is healthy. If the disc is good then the blu-ray/dvd drive might be dirty inside and REQUIRE a DVD cleaning disc run in it to dust off the optics.

Thanks for the fast reply. I should have mentioned that in my original post...yes, I have a 'lens-cleaner' disk, and have used it multiple times.

To be clearer in what's going on:

Blank CD's and Blu-Ray disks will load fine, and be able to be burned and played.

Previously burned and commercial CD's and Blu-Rays disks are able to be played

Blank DVD's won't 'spin up', and previously burned and commercial DVD's won't play.

So, while my drive recognizes CD's and Blu-Ray disks, it no longer will recognize DVD disks.

It seems like a software 'switch' has been 'turned off' somehow. I recently read in another tech FORUM to check the 'Use AutoPlay for all media and devices' checkbox(at the top of the attached screen print).
I tried that, blank DVD's will still 'spin up', and burn. But those, and all prior burned and commercial DVD's won't load. Looks like the only difference was that whenever a disc was loaded, a box came up asking what software I wanted to use to play the files(which did not happen before). So, I unchecked it and went back to the way it was before.
Attached is a screen print of Control Panel-Autoplay...is it possible that one(or more) of these SELECTIONS has somehow got changed from what they used to be?
Oh, forgot to mention that I use(and have been for many years) my 'Nero StartSmart Essentials'(there's no 'Help' button, so I can't see what version it is).Quote

Blank DVD's won't 'spin up', and previously burned and commercial DVD's won't play.

Optical drives use a different laser (and in most cases lens) for reading/writing CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray; so in a Blu-ray drive, there is a 780nm Laser for CDs, a 650nm Laser for DVD, and a 405nm Laser for Blu-Ray.

If DVDs are not working, then the DVD laser diode has probably died- Basically, the DVD part of the drive has failed. Though you've mentioned several times that you can burn DVDs but not read them, which directly contradicts the section I quoted.Latest news:

I did a hard reboot...

I am still able to burn and view CD's and Blu-Ray discs, either my own data or commercial discs.

Blank DVD's still 'spin up', and are able to be burned 'successfully', but will not load after burning.

All my prior burned DVD's which used to load, are now not loading.

Commercial DVD's will load and play OK.

I was able to burn and then load/play DVD's when using the 'multidisc' option(which I normally don't use).

I've been using blank DVD+R discs for many years without issues... could it be that my burner's settings have been changed to not accept the DVD+R disc using the non-multidisc option(but then why do DVD's burn successfully)?

Any suggestions as to what to try? How do I stop this 'how do you want to use this disk' msg box from popping up everytime I burn a DVD? In the past, this box did NOT pop up, it just started recently, and ONLY for DVD's(there is no pop up msg box for CD's and Blu-Ray blank discs. You can change that in autoplay options. It will be an option if you search "Autoplay" in the start menu.

Actually, you were in there earlier. You just need to SET the default.Yes, I remember how to get to the 'autoplay' options, but I don't know what to change. I posted a screen cap in a prior post...which options do I need to pick? Thanks!Change "Blank DVD" from "Choose Default" to "Do nothing"

Solve : Longhorn Registry Modification for XP?

Answer»

Found on the web...

Microsoft claims that Longhorn will be faster because they added a Superfetch feature to the prefetcher.

In Windows XP, if you look at the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters you'll see:

EnablePrefetcher = 3

In Windows Longhorn you should see:

EnableSuperfetch = 1

So what do you know? You can put the EnableSuperfetch = 1 in Windows XP and get the same speed.

Microsoft just 'added' a feature that was - already there - in XP!

Just a note on the key name:

Add DWORD

EnableSuperfetch = 1

Which will look like this.

(EnableSuperfetch REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

Anyone tried it yet and found an improvement?

Are you supposed to leave the EnablePrefetch key in place?

Interesting!

Have you enabled the option and has Windows continued to function?I have, on XP Pro on the C: drive, and it does.

I can't see any difference though. What has Microsoft got to say on this function, then?

I shall configure the game computer to use this tweak tomorrow.Longhorn more bugs than the amazon jungle has!Quote

MAYBE soaking the CD in Raid will cure these problems.
I added the Dword value. Nothing has happened. The total size of the prefetch folder is still the same and the computer still boots just as fast.

And it works too! They had better add a CLASSICAL look.. Although I do like it that they got rid of the white and made it black. Easier on the eyes.

EnableSuperfetch is probably another of those hoax tweaks. Hasn't made the slightest difference.

The Windows Blinds version looks good too. But the thing that always seems to be lacking is the icon array and third party program integration where looks are concerned.

Solve : Cannot open Amazon.com. Also trouble opening documents in Office Starter?

I have Windows 7 and a fairly new computer. I am unable to open Amazon.com (looked in your forum ANSWERS, but the answers GIVEN would not help me as they related to other versions of Windows). Also, I am having TROUBLE opening some of my documents in Office Starter.

I recently uninstalled Norton Security and installed the Security Suite from Time Warner; called CA Security. Think this may be the problem.

I am not a beginner computer user, but certainly not an expert either.

Thanks for any help you can provide. If CA Security has security settings in the firewall component check them as Amazon is a secure site for PAID transactions...THANK you. Will try checking any security settings.

Solve : Hard Drive Partition - Questions?

Answer»

I need help on hard drive partition under windows 7. I have a desktop PC running home PREMIUM with a 500GB HDD installed but like most PCs this is partitioned for recovery purposes leaving only half the specified disc space available to use. On the machine in question i have all but used this space up, despite having 2 external HDDs to store and backup to. Space is mostly taken up with videos and photos that i do not want to remove or delete.

What i want to know is does my PC need half its HDD for recovery purposes, if not how do i change the partition (ideally without reinstalling windows or formatting the drive) and if i change the partition what would be the minimum size needed for recovery? If i cant change the partition without reinstalling windows or formatting the drive (i.e. loosing all my data), what would happen if i just put files and folders into the 'empty' drive partition to make space in the main one?

Any advice appreciated.Update

Just had a look at the Disk Management pag and it shows i have 3 partitions. the main C drive where i have all my data (around 225GB), a 17GB recovery partition and D drive of about 225 GB, which i thought was the recovery drive and has nothing in it. The disk manager will allow me to either shrink or delete this 'drive'. cant decide what to do about it. Still confused. Why would a PC be set up this way? How would i go about using this D drive? How easy would it be to ACCESS data stored on it. Could i install a second OS onto it and in effect create 2 PCs in one. Please help. It's bizarre how some manufacturers do this. The D drive is a "data" drive - it's empty, you can use it as you wish without affecting anything. You could install another OS on it if you wanted to, and dual boot, or you could just use it for storage.I think manufacturers set up partitions that way so they can tell users to move all their files to that partition before using the included recovery options that may format the C:\ drive and wipe out data. I never said it was a good idea. You learn something new everyday. Never knew any of this before today and I have had my machine for a couple of years. Have been plodding along using just the C drive as it gradually ran lower on space, wondering what to do when it ran out.

Never knew about the disk management app either. Strange.

Thanks for the help.
On many computers, the recovery partition is D drive. An additional partition (besides C and D) would be E, etc. The recovery partition must be assigned a drive letter, just like other partitions/drives. Apparently, the manufacturer of your system used a letter other than D for the recovery partition. Regardless of the drive letter ASSIGNMENTS, the more important point is that you now know you have MUCH more available drive space. Is it posible to link or tie in data or folders on the data drive to user accounts and/or libraries (Documents pictures video etc) so that it is easy to access specific folders on the d drive and in effect pulls together folders /data of specific types on both drives. I have created directories and moved files over to the data drive but at present are separate from the remaining data on the c drive and are less easy to find! I still want to keep everyday data folders on the c drive and use the d drive to archive less often used files and folders.

Hope this makes sense. You could add folders on D to your Libraries. Here's a reference: Organizing with Windows 7 LibrariesThanks soybean. Could have used short cuts but libraries are better. Have to date moved over 100gb to the d drive.

Any way to link/tie in particular directories on the drive to specific user accounts so that only that user can access certain data?Quote from: richardf77 on July 08, 2013, 12:01:17 PM
Any way to link/tie in particular directories on the drive to specific user accounts so that only that user can access certain data?
Have a look here: Setting Access Permissions on Folders and Files

Note: My search phrase to find that was limiting access to files and folders by limited users in windows 7. Thanks for replies. Most helpfull

On a slighly seperate note i hav just replaced the HDD on a laptop and reinstalled win7 onto it. I wanted the drive partitioned like its predecessor and my desktop PC IE 50/50 OS and data drives. I thougth there might be an option to do this when i installed windows but i either missed it or it wasnt provided. I waas wondering if i could still add a partition and if so how would i do it without reinstaling windows again. I thought the Disk Management app might do it but i cant see anything about new partitions only modifying existing ones.

ThanksWhen installing Windows 7, you get an option right after you pick whether to do an upgrade or custom install to partition the drive. It'll show all the drives in the machine, and give you options for "next" which just installs on the selected partition, "new" to create partitions, "delete" to remove them, etc. You can however shrink the partition within Disk Management, you'll need to shrink the existing partition before creating a new one from the blank space.Shrank the c drive and created a second (E) drive in the empty space. Easier to do than i thought. Now i have an OS drive and a data drive on my new disc. Just like a new computer from a store!

Thanks

Solve : win7 & vista on same computer?

I bought a cyberpower PC with win 7. I installed my vista HD as a second HD, THE Vista drive worked for about a week, then it asked me for the proper windows registration number or it wont work. I bought both computers with windows. I paid for both vista & WIN7. What can I do to GET Vista to work and boot up. I don;t no how to find my windows registry numbers. all help is welcome. There is a tool called Jellybean that can read the windows key and tell you what it is for that install. Great tool to have when KEYS rub off of laptops or become damaged and you are guessing a character to be 0 thru 9 or A thru Z or the key is lost because it never got stuck onto the computer case and disc and certificate of authenticity with key are missing. This is not a key generator, it requires windows to still FUNCTION to be able to install and run it and retrieve the info. If it no longer allows you to log into Vista because it requires a key to function, this tool wont help you and you will have to buy a new vista license or locate the one that is missing. Vista is pretty cheap on ebay to buy authentic disc and key.

What brand of PC? HP? Gateway?
Some OEM versions of Windows can be tied to the hard drive. So moving or replacing the hard drive can cause the activation to reset.

This problem is widely know. It really ANNOYS users when MS asks for activation after a hard drive change. The product should be tied to the CPU, not the hard drive.
Here is one example from HP.

Hi,

windows update occur only when i shut down my computer the it automatically start update so i think antivirus was off at that time.

will i update all my drivers? from where i find a software that updates all my drivers?

kindly tell me how to update all of them
That's normal. Updates are downloaded but many times are not INSTALLED until you shutdown the computer. Big warning on screen: "Do Not Turn Off Computer while Updates are Being Installed".

BTW, there is a BIOS update F0A, 7/18/2011, you have F09. There is also an F0B, do not do this one, it alters the BIOS security which maybe good for a company but not for an individual.

Rather than download all the drivers manually, HP has an Update SERVICE similar to Microsoft. Look for HP PC Tuneup on your ProBook. I'm not on the laptop now, so can't tell you exactly where it is.

Patio, BTW, HP does not provide any CD's or written docs with the ProBook. It's a business machine.Gotcha Commando...
Thanx much for the heads up...Hi Commando,

Have u seen the images which i have posted regarding sensor and pc information.

what they shows? All sensor info looks normal.Thanx

So what i do else for this blue screen problem???You could reinstall Windows by going back to the "as shipped" configuration. There is a "F" selection on power-up.

Solve : Windows Vista crashes during Sleep mode?

Answer»

Hello
I have a Compaq Presario with Windows Vista Home Premium. There is 2 GB of RAM and 201 GB free of 287 GB total.
The problem is that whenever it enters sleep mode, a few problems are taking place. The computer will either
1) crash/restart
2) stay frozen in sleep mode, only solvable by holding power button down to shut down.
Upon restarting, I have the option to run in Safe Mode. I did this, and the problem didn't persist while in Safe Mode, but I have no idea where to go from there. I checked the Problem Reports and Solutions and here is the report from the most recent incident:

Service Pack:2_0

This has been happening for about 2-3 months. Any help would be appreciated.
Crashing in sleep mode is usually down to a driver not behaving properly when entering or resuming from a LOW power state.
A simple fix would be to just not use sleep mode. If you don't want to do that, please let us know the exact model of your Compaq Presario, so we can help you further. The FIRST step will probably just be to UPDATE any necessary drivers with the latest versions.I tried not using sleep mode, and I got all sorts of freezing and blue screens.
How would I find which drivers need to be updated?
The model is SR5633WM.
Thanks for the response.Scratch that. I didn't try running it with sleep mode off. I changed the setting to not restart the computer when an error occurred. I had an older computer do that to me you mentioned one of the warnings were not to open certian files. What I did was do a system restore then started removing everything I downloaded from the time I remember it starting. You might not have to go that far. But I am sure there is a software that is causing this.I'm unsure if you're running Vista 32 or 64 bit, so I've provided links for both.
Graphics driver (32-bit
Graphics driver (64-bit
Chipset driver (for both)
Network driver - for some reason the link isn't working, but just scroll down to "Vista and WinServer 2008 Auto Installation Program (SID:1568647)" and click any of the mirrors next to it to download the driver.

Install those, reboot when requested, and see how you go.Turning off sleep mode seems to do the trick.
However, I would like to update the drivers as well to solve the problem.
I installed the chipset driver and network driver. Neither of these solved the problem.
The graphics driver would not install on my computer (I have a 32-bit Vista by the way.) An error message popped up that said "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer please obtain the appropriate driver from the manufacturer"
Thanks for all the help, hopefully we can figure this out so I can use sleep mode again. Apologies for the late reply. If the graphics driver won't install, that's often a sign of some custom firmware which stops you using the "normal" drivers, you'll only be able to use whatever Compaq decide to update with which is probably ancient so won't help.

Did anything change before this started, or has the PC always had this problem? Is it fully updated from Windows Update?Windows update has some optional updates available, but it's not really anything that would appear important.
The computer has always given us trouble. We've done system restore a few times, which would temporarily fix the problem, however after a few months a similair problem would arise.
It works fine with sleep mode turned off, so I guess if all else fails I'll just stick with that.
BumpI have a Compaq Presario CQ50-139NR notebook with this same problem. The problem of not resuming after sleep mode started occuring after a Windows Vista update around June 13, 2013. I also cannot get the driver for 32-bit to load. I am hoping Windows will release a new update that will fix this problem since it started after their update. I now keep my laptop from going into sleep mode to keep from rebooting all the time.Yeah hopefully. But for now I guess we'll just have to go without sleep mode.

When I go to Start and All Programs, there are programs listed and when I click on them, it shows Empty, for example: Ssuite Office, WinPcap, Winutilities, Wise Disk Cleaner, and a bunch of others. They are in my Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and FEATURES, yet they will not open when I click on them in the Start and All Programs.

Anyone know why this is?

Solve : Computer freezing after login, HDD Light stays solid?

Answer»

Hello,

I appreciate any HELP or thoughts that could be the problem here. I recently came back to my computer after a few hours and my screen was frozen but my mouse was movable. Any icons i clicked did not open and i could not bring up the start option to restart so I forcibly did so by holding in the power button. This problem has never happened before today.

Upon restart, it loads everything fine and can log in but it will freeze somewhere between the welcome screen and the desktop. Again, the mouse is movable and the HDD light is SOLID.

Safe mode seems to work although I have tried to run anti-malware scan and the same thing happened in safe mode as well. i am able to go on the internet from safe mode. I am now running seatools for dos and performing a long scan to see if the HD is dying. I have also done a memory test in the startup with no errors being recorded.

One time during the startup it ran a chkdsk on its own and a few files were moved and changed. This did not help though as the same problem persisted after the login.

Any help would be appreciated! I custom built my computer, it is windows 7 ultimate and i have not downloaded any new SOFTWARE recently. All the parts are only about 10 months old, except the power supply which i used from my old computer a few years ago.The scan just completed and it gave me a "seatools test code:E594C856". Afterward it tried to repair it and i tried to start up normally again to see if it worked. It did last a little longer this time "about 2 minutes compared to 10 seconds" before it went back to its same old ways.

The hard drive is failing. I would suggest you backup up your data as soon as possible. You can USE a program like Acronis true image or Norton ghost to SAVE an image of the drive onto an external drive. Then buy a hard drive and push the image back to it as to avoid having to reinstall the OS and all of your applications. Acronis/Ghost may fail depending on how bad the hard drive is. In which case a manual backup would be in order. I believe there are free versions of drive imaging programs, just do a Google search.

Goodluck,

MikeAgreed, the HDD is on its way out and you need to back up as soon as possible to avoid any (further) data loss.
A good free imaging program is Macrium Reflect, you can use this as described above to make an image backup of your hard drive to another drive, which you can then restore to your new drive and simply resume where you left off, assuming it's not too far gone.Quote from: riggs268 on June 20, 2013, 07:39:54 PM

did it give you a status like passed, failed, aborted with the code?

Solve : Problem windows start with graphic card?

Answer»

hello all...

My problem is when i START my computer, the desktop icons appear seems like using VGA NOT DVI.... but after i RESTART my computer, the desktop icons back to normal ( DVI )...When i shutdown my computer and start back the desktop icons appear seems like using VGA...so i need to restart back to make my desktop icons back to normal (DVI) dunno why....plsss help Sounds to me like you have the wrong drivers installed for that card...What video card or integrated GPU are you running?

I have seen SIMILAR issues with running Windows 7 64 BIT using a GeForce 8400 GS video card with 256MB RAM where occasionally the Desktop Windows Manager will drop the details back to a lesser detailed interface/icons for legacy SUPPORT. On my GeForce 8400GS this was only HAPPENING when coming out of games that were full screen back to the desktop. But a restart was required to get it back to normal better appearance.

I upgraded to a ASUS ATI Radeon HD5450 video card with 512MB RAM and the problem went away.

Solve : youtube keeps changing quality and has several other bugs?

i have somany issues with youtube since many years and on any pc ive used.it buffers a certain part of the video.then when you put the seekbar back, you lose the buffered part even if it was buffered clearly.so annoying.these bugs were not present from any RECENT update.these bugs ive faced throughout my life in youtube.for me some videos buffer for a while after ive set it to 240p or 144p.then without my permission it suddenly and rendomly INCREASES to 360p thinkin that my internet is FAST,after that buffering stops completely.youtube sucks.....those LOSERS shud fix itI suspect your connection...travel to speedtest .net and check your speeds vs. what you are paying for...
It's not a uTube issue here.im sorrybuddy.i live in india here the connection speeds are not that fast.but i have 3mbps uplink and downlink in speedtest.net.
dont always directly conclude about the connection speed.when you are in country that doesent have fast speeds then u will slowly discover
which websites really have bugs.
before i had a below 1mbps connection at my home and still every other SITE used to work flawlessly.youtube was the only one with major bugs

Solve : W7 IE9 save all email on USB?

Answer»

i need to save all my emails onto a USB, how would i do that please? What type of email account do you have? Webmail or POP with an email client?

If it's webmail, such as gmail, Yahoo Mail, or any email account you access via your web browser, your question doesn't make SENSE to me because your email RESIDES on a email server somewhere on the Internet and can be accessed by you anywhere that you have Internet access. I guess this is the type of account you have since you mentioned your web browser, but please confirm that.

To put your email messages on a USB DRIVE, this would normally entail having a POP email account and downloading your email to your hard drive. In this situation, you would have options for SAVING messages on a USB drive. For what it is worth.
Anybody who wants to have his/her e-mail on a USB drive might think abbot a portable e-mail client. Thee are programs to run from the USB device and save e-mail on that same device.
Opera is just one of many such. Free, and it is a browser too.
Here is a short list with links
Top 5 portable e-mail clients
I would add to the list Thunderbird. It is free.
Doe this help any?I was going to mention Thunderbird but thought I'd WAIT until darcomputer replies. The portable edition of Thunderbird can be downloaded from: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portablehello and ty for responding. i was lent this w7 toshiba Qosmio laptop and it is time to return it. i have a hotmail.com and a cogeco.ca email accounts. just want to save them on my USB so i can put this computer back to factory settings. tyvmThe OP may went to Google:
Thunderbird import
Or just go to:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/
it was terrible and have given up, thanks for any helpFor the life of me, I can't see an issue here. You can access Hotmail via web browser. Likewise, you can access your cogeco.ca email account the same way at http://www.cogeco.ca/web/on/en/my_cogeco/. Surely, you know Hotmail can be accessed via web browser; that's the way it's normally accessed.

Solve : How I can star a program with a batch file?

Answer»

Hi !
My question is the next...

I wanna start one program to make a screen capture video with a batch file, actually I be using this syntax ( START C:\documents\expression\expression.exe ). So the problem is than with this command I only OPEN the program but don't start to record the screen because I NEED pulse the start button on the software.

I would like know if exit some command for than after the program start to record the software?

Regards and thanks Not likely with batch. After the program is launched, without using the mouse, can you tab to the start button? If you can, does pressing enter start the recording? VBScript might be the solution. We would need to know how many times you press the tab key to give focus to the start button.

You might also try Autoit which is free but requires a download.

you can use SIKULI a free application ,using this programme you can record the ACTION one time .

Solve : Here's a good one - issues printing from Windows 7?

Answer»

Here's an issue that we've been STRUGGLING with, on and off, for a few weeks at work. We've tried many things and done much Googling, but haven't been able to resolve the problem yet.

Background: medium size office, I'd say roughly 60 users, mix of Windows 7 Enterprise X64 and XP Pro, with a Server 2003 R2 Domain Controller.
The issue is, basically, being unable to print from Windows 7 Enterprise x64 to a Kyocera Taskalfa 250ci. We have several Kyocera printers including ANOTHER identical one, no problems with those at all, it's just one department with problems. Well, I say department, it's actually one room of people in a few departments, so they're even all in the same security groups in AD.
The issue seems to be a driver problem, in that if you right click on the printer and select "Printing preferences", you get an "operation could not be completed" box, no additional details. You can't then print to the printer, even a test page, and trying to select the printer from, say, Excel, will give you "Printer offline" or "Could not connect to printer". Having the printer set as default while in this state will also cause certain programs such as IE to freak out when the default printer doesn't respond and display cryptic error messages until you set the default to something else. Restarting the machine or printer will not help, you have to right click - remove the printer, log off or switch user, then log back on and reinstall the printer. This usually works, but not always.
While this is going on, other users will be able to print to the printer, until they will randomly run into the exact same issue. It's worth noting that myself and the other IT tech are always able to print to the printer with no problems whatsoever.

What we've tried so FAR: updating the driver on the print server, using a more generic driver than the Kyocera advanced one, setting the printer to render jobs on client computers rather than the server, disabling advanced printing features, and switching driver modes. Sometimes we can go 4 days or more without the issue cropping up, other times we've no sooner removed and re-added the printer and confirmed it's working than the same user is again unable to print.

I can't see that it's a plain incompatibility issue because the other 250ci we have, along with a 300ci, two 3550s and two 2550s, do not cause this problem, also we are able to print just fine using the same OS and driver.

Any suggestions would be more than welcome, we're tearing our hair out with this! How much time and money do you want to spend?
If you can isolate the issue to just one model of printer, replace those printers. The presumption is that the firmware on those printers is wrong.
It's just one printer that has the issue, and two of us have always been able to print to it with no problems whatsoever. The other identical printer also has no issues. I would imagine if the printer had a fault, or a firmware issue, everyone would have the same issue with it.
Talking of firmware reminded me to check the version and the 250ci with no issues does indeed have a slightly newer firmware version, hence why I have been mulling over upgrading it just to see if it makes a difference. The problem is, if anything goes wrong during the update and we BRICK the printer, that's a major issue as it's fairly critical. We have a stop on IT expenditure, otherwise the printers would ideally be replaced in order to have the same make and model of printer across the business as a whole, to reduce maintenance and consumables cost.Quote

..would imagine if the printer had a fault, or a firmware issue, everyone would have the same issue with it.
A variation of Murphy;s law says 'if they can get it wrong...they wail!
It has either defective firmware chip, or, more likely, an earlier version.Or, it can be even an mechanical problem that only shows up in strange places.
As Forrest Gump would say "Things happen."

This is a company printer, so I can't really do that.Maybe find out which printer gets the overall least office usage and swap the 2...
Have you checked for a firmware update ? ?
Could also just be the controller board.Quote from: patio on May 28, 2013, 08:44:26 AM

Could be an option, to see if the issue follows the users or the printer. It's a heavy beast though, might have to rope in some serious muscle to do that!

Quote
Have you checked for a firmware update ? ?

There is one available but we're hesitant to apply it due to the risk of bricking the printer. Even though the risk is tiny, the impact would be significant. I think in all fairness this will have to be the next step though, we seem to have exhausted most other possibilities.Quote

I'm off on Thursday this week...airfare and a Pint would need to be part of the deal...

It's 106kg or thereabouts, if you'll do that for airfare and a pint I'm happy with that Deal !.... You're a better man than me...I hauled up a 36kg laser printer from my car, up two flights of stairs to my flat, and just about did my back in!ahhhh printer, they just seem to agvervate every one even the guys in the tech depratment, i belive the invers of the printer just wanted a device to cause mass irration Update on the situation: the printer developed another fault with the black developer unit, so it's away for repairs as the dev unit they brought wasn't compatible due to firmware differences. It'll be fully updated when it comes back, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.
I worked around the issue in the end by adding the printer as a local printer to the machines, rather than adding it as a shared printer. I did this by using the path to the printer ( \\servername\printer ) as the local port name. Seemed to be working fine up until the printer gave up.
I can't wait to get rid of these Kyocera printers, who in the world thought it would be a good idea for them not to even be able to scan if a fault code is triggered by a print related component? "Hmm, so, the black dev unit is faulty, no printing...better stop them scanning too, because...just because". Caused me a lot of aggro! Especially as the temporary replacement machine from another department names its scanned documents slightly differently, leading to the software they use not picking them up correctly so they have to scan at another machine, and...so many trivial issues stemming from one SIMPLE thing, jeez.

==================================================Multiple and varied bsod's are often caused by either malware or faulty hardware or drivers. What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? If you haven't done so recently, please open the case and carefully blow out any dust inside.

We can run some checks:

1) Please run full scans with BOTH your installed anti virus app and with MalwareBytes

2) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

3) To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

4) Open device manager - any yellow or red SYMBOLS?

5) Does this HAPPEN even if the system is idle? If so, please boot to safe mode and see if the same THING happens there.

Solve : Laptop wont start.?

Answer»

Ok so I get this laptop from a friend at work and she asks me to figure out whats wrong with it.

She tells me it just wont start and it takes like 2 days to actually load up. Im like *censored*!

So I turn it on and nothing... Left it on for a day.. still nothing. Took out the HD hooked up to my desktop and scanned it. came up with 2 trojans, got rid of em still nothing.

So wiped the HD using my desktop put it back in the lappy boot it up nothing!!!

Only thing I can think of at this point is some sort of power failure...or Bad Processor... Anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Specs far as I know....
Toshiba Satellite L305-S5901
Intel Celeron
WINDOWS Vista
Samsung 2x 1GB stick 2Rx16 PC2 RAMWhat do you mean you wiped it and then tried to boot to it? Did you install an OS? If so, did you install it using your system or your friend's?Tried to boot it using my OS CD but nothing the laptop is simply unresponsive in every way it seems.

Its XP Pro I was trying to boot with.If the laptop won't boot to your CD it's due to one of the following reasons:

1) The cd drive is not the first device in the bios boot order or

2) The cd drive is bad or

3) The cd is bad or

4) There is a major hardware problem (motherboard, ram, cpu, etc) with the laptop. If absolutely nothing happens when you turn it on you probably should send it to a repair shop or Toshiba.Quote from: Allan on MARCH 19, 2012, 02:27:30 PM

1. Cd drive probly isnt the 1st boot device by default.

2. I hear it operating when I turn on the laptop.

3. CD works fine I use it all the time.

4. I think this may be more what the issue is. Power light comes on you hear the cd-drive working but nothing shows up on the screen nor does it sound like the lappy it self is initiating any sort of tasks or operations, Even thought it may be the screen so hooked up the cable from my flat screen to the lappy and still nothing.

Just took it apart and blew out any dust build up etc. Going to reassemble and try again. If nothing happens guess I give up lolQuote from: DARK9 on March 19, 2012, 03:08:30 PM
2. I hear it operating when I turn on the laptop.

Just because it makes noise doesn't mean it's perfectly functional.

If you start a car with no gasoline it makes sound, but that doesn't mean you can drive it.Quote

This indicates a likey motherboard-level failure, assuming you hooked the laptop up to the screen correctly. Are you sure you toggled the laptop screen over to the external ? Some laptops may switch over automatically but if not you'll need to use the screen toggle function key. You can also remove the battery and try booting only with the charger plugged in, but you'll have to test the charger first to verify it's outputting correct voltage.

Next step at this point is not blowing out dust, but taking the motherboard out and doing a bare bones boot of the system to further isolate the issue. If you isolate it down the the mother board then you've got some things to check, that is if you're up to it. Get a volt meter and while the charger is plugged into the board, put the test leads on the pins where the power jack connects to the board (on the board) to verify that the board is getting power. If the results you get are not the voltage what's indicated on the charger output specs, then you're looking at a power jack repair or replacement. If it's the type of jack that simple plugs into the board it will be easy to replace (no soldering)..

If the board is getting power and you still get nothing on screen, a reflow of the northbridge and or gpu could resolve it. I use a hot air rework station for doing this sort of thing but I doubt you've got on of those LAYING around so what you can do it, cover up the motherboard completely in foil, exposing only the north BRIDGE chip and dedicated GPU (is present)... Turn on the OVEN and preheat it to 150 degrees celcius while the board is inside, after a few minutes, increase the temp to 225 degrees celcius for about four minutes. When time is up, open up the oven and turn off. Let the board cool for about an hour and try booting is up again. Make sure you remove EVERYTHING from the motherboard before oven...Including cpu.

Might also want to check the board for bad capacitors which are easy to replace. Check for spills and trace damage too, because if any of these are present then you're looking at a short circuit damage which probably permanently damaged one of the chips.

Solve : Win Opening Screen??

Answer»

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me why, seemingly all of a sudden, now when I turn on my machine in the morning rather than my desktop waiting for me, I have to CLICK on a little icon and THEN it will open to my desktop. It's like there are MULTIPLE users on this computer or something, but it's only me, myself, and I.
Thanks for any ideas; I would have tried a search on here but I can't think of what to ask...

radio
If you've created an account for yourself then you will have to click on the account icon, but without a description and/or screenshot of the icon. then this is guess work..............Is there only one Icon (account) on the screen or are the multiple icons (accounts) from which you can choose?Hi, There's only one icon. I sure don't remember recently creating an account, but that does sound like what it is. How can I 'undo' an account? I'll TRY to shut down and do a PrintScr when it starts back up and see if I can capture it. It's not a big problem, just an extra click that I never had to do in the past... tnx!
To disable an account in Windows 7 goto - Start - Control panel - Add and Remove user account. You haven't mentioned what Operating System you have........

Well, I tried to do an alt- PrintScr but I guess it's too early in the opening process to work. But just picture this: a big blue screen, with one tiny square in the exact CENTER of the screen with a little fish in the box. And underneath the tiny box it says 'radiocycle'. I click on the box and it opens up to my desktop. Previously, I would just come in and it would already be at my desktop.

Yes, I'm sorry about not adding that I'm running Win 7 64 bit. I'll go try that procedure now... I think that might be the ticket and I'll let ya know for sure, thanks!
Yeah, that sounds pretty much like an account 'log-in', you can disable it. If you have any trouble with it or NEED more advice, you can always ask here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/377-log-automatically-startup.htmlYES!

Thanks guys! That was it. That link that you posted, Allan, had the procedure I needed to turn ON the 'auto log in'.

I remember now that I did mess with that "netplwiz" when I was installing the magicjack phone thing the other day. I must have inadvertently changed the permissions there.

Yours in peace,

radioHappy to help. Glad you got it sorted out

Solve : Constant BSOD?

Computer Statistics:
Computer: Alienware M17-R1 (Laptop)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80GHz
Memory: 2x2GB (4GB total)
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Video: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 X2 (Crossfire)
AUDIO: Realtek High Definition Audio

I've been having constant BSOD for a long time. It usually happens when I'm gaming or watching videos. Also, going fullscreen on games and videos triggers this BSOD sometimes. Sometimes, it doesn't even blue screen. It just completely freezes with the audio freezing as well. Sometimes, it'll create white vertical lines across the screen with the audio freezing. I researched this particular BSOD and it said it has to do with the Memory. So I tried MemTest86+. After 6 passes, it found 0 errors. I heard sometimes even MemTest86+ can't detect it all. I took out each RAM card and TESTED each by itself and it still blue screens. Not sure what is causing this. I used BlueScreenView to get this dump. There would be more but my cleaner removed the dump files. But this BSOD just happened so I have this dump (Ignore the time. It's incorrect.):

If you do, I suggest uninstalling Avast and installing a different anti virus app.I have the latest version of Avast! Internet Security. These blue screens have been going on even before I installed Avast. I used to have AVG and this would still happen. I know it's not a virus because after a fresh format (full), this still would happen. I'm currently uninstalling Avast to make sure. Just before I read your post I had another BSOD. Each time I blue screen, the driver cause changes. I'm not sure if that matters.

==================================================Hi ug505,

Looking at the 3 reports that you have uploaded, the issues are pointing to multiple DRIVERS which I don't believe are the issue. (one of them points to the mouse driver) Your BSoD's are triggered when gaming or watching videos which would lead me into thinking that the issue is more than likely to be related to you GFX card. I can see that you have already run MemTest86+ which is good. (hopefully you ran it on each stick individually, using one slot at a time to rule out a bad slot)

Have you tried physically removing your GFX card which would make your system use your onboard GFX instead. I know that this will impact your gaming performance, especially if your onboard GFX are not that great, but it is a good way to try and rule out the GFX card being at fault (I also take it that you are using the most upto date drivers for your card?)

Also, if you have any overclocking on your machine, disable that too. Another cause of BSoD's can be the use of Daemon Tools (programs that allow you to VIRTUALLY mount ISO's) like Alcohol 52%, PowerISO etc, so try removing those as well.

Have you run a System File Check? (SFC) Open up a command prompt at an elevated level. Start>All Programs>Accessories. Right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator. You now have the choice to either verify that your system files are OK, or you can get Windows to check and repair for any problems. (should it find any issues) For Windows 7 this won't require the installation disk, and can take a while (10 mins to 1hr depending on your specs) to complete.

To verify only that your system files are OK, simply type sfc /verifyonly and hit enter. (This won't make any changes to your system files, but only checks for issues)
To check and repair and issues found, then instead type sfc /scannow and hit enter. (This will make the necessary changes to your system files)

If you choose the first option (to verify only) let us know what problems it may have found, and if there are any issues that it can't resolve.

Note: I'd look at the GFX card first though, as that looks like where your issue is coming from, due to the description you gave.First of all, I don't see anything related to the mouse driver. The first bsod points to aswSP.SYS which is an Avast file. The second points to stream.sys which is a system file related to, well, streaming.

1) Please do a search for stream.sys and post its location

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Have you recently updated any drivers?

3) Look in Device Manager - any yellow or red symbols?Additionally, the machine is a laptop, the 3870X2 cannot be removed. If it was a desktop and had onboard graphics, that would however have been a good suggestion and my first port of call, I suspect the graphics card is on its way out although that's only a preliminary suspicion.Hi Allan,

The first one pointed to mouclass.sys which is a mouse driver. The second report pointed to aswSP.SYS which is the Avast! system protection driver and the third report pointed to the stream.sys which is a Stream Class Driver possibly relating to a webcam.
It just seemed strange that each report was pointing to various issues, and nothing specific which is why I asked him/her to run SFC (pref verify at first) to check for issues.
Agreed that I should have asked OP to check for driver related warnings via Device Manager though.

[Edit] Just saw the reply regarding it being as laptop. Sorry I assumed desktop. A full system spec would also help. OP can use Speccy ( http://www.piriform.com/speccy ) to do this by running the program and then going File>Publish Snapshot, which will present you with a URL that OP can post here, that will alllow people helping to get a better picture of the machines specs and current updates/ temps etc. It's best to use the Publish Snapshot as this won't include any personal info like the various serial numbers, unlike just uploading a spec report via text file.Quote from: TheGift73 on JUNE 27, 2013, 06:58:00 AM

Hi Allan,

The first one pointed to mouclass.sys which is a mouse driver.
You are correct - I missed the first one completely.

I'd like to try a clean boot to see if you have the same issue. Please run msconfig and choose "selective startup" (uncheck all 3 items) and reboot. Does the same thing happen?

Solve : Windows 7 Hangs Up When Logging Off?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a windows 7 station that hangs when you log off. But if you reboot it works FINE. I think it has a network connection that it won't let go. It will sit saying "Logging Off" for over night. Strange.

This is a fresh install on a DELL 745.

Thanks
If it's a laptop see this fix :

Here Ya Go...

If it's a Desktop check Event Viewer and see if there are any clues there listed...Its a desktop.
I will look in the logs and see if I can find anything

Assuming it is NOT a network connection, here are some things you can try.

FIRST:

1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and REPLACE the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

SECOND:

If the problem persists, Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.Thanks.
I will check out the items Allan. The user is on vacation and will not be back until next week. It seems she is the only one to have this problem. When I login and than log off it doesn't hang. We are both administrators on the machine.

I try some testing when she gets back.

Thanks
Okay - KEEP us posted.if there are any clues there listed...

Solve : Desktop icon problem?

Answer»
Windows 7, 64 bit.
Hoping you can help. Situation. Switched computer off at night. Logged on next morning and every icon on the screen with the exception of the embedded ones, (Trash can and My computer) were partially overlaid with what appeared to be a page of paper, curled over at one CORNER, with what appeared to be a screen on the paper it with three indistinguishable icons. Every icon was partially overlaid by this icon.
The icons still open the programs but the additions offend the eyes. .
Can you help.
Could you post a screenshot of your desktop so we can see exactly what the icons now look like?
Is it just the desktop that is affected, or are the icons in your start menu the same?
By the way, I tried system restore, scanned with Malwarebytes and CC , all clear.
Will post a screenshot when I find out how to get the Kb level down Trying ::,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Managed to get it down to 268k via "Irfanview" saved it to a png file but it wouldn't "preview" in the post after browsing it to the command line?
Computer numpty me Further suggestions re posting the screen shot please?

[recovering disk SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]Spoke too soon. Screenshot appeared Hope that helps. Thanks for your interestThat's an interesting one.
Have you restarted the PC since this issue began?
I would suggest rebuilding the icon cache, looks like it may have become corrupted.
To do this, open up a command prompt and type the following commands, hit enter after each line.

taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F

After the above command, explorer will exit, meaning your desktop icons will all disappear, as will your taskbar, start menu, etc. This is expected, and it's why we're doing this in command prompt. Next type:

DEL "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" /A

This deletes the icon cache.

Then reboot your computer, on reboot it will REBUILD the icon cache. See if this helps.Cannot see from the pic what the icons say...that may give a clue...Thank you both gents. Calum. Taken aboard but waiting for a mate who is much more conversant with Computers to come around and try your suggestion.
I did note that it has seemed to slow down the opening of icons when booted.

Solve : Windows Registry could be fix by Windows repair install??

Answer»

If yes, then surely better to do repair install than to use some registry cleaner prog.
Win7I'd perform a clean install or repair install vs trying to patch registry holes. I have fought many battles with Windows Registry problems and its way easier to set it back to clean state by clean BUILD or repair install.

Although I had to deal with orphan registry ENTRIES a long time ago with a HP Pavilion Celeron 700Mhz computer running Windows Me that I attempted to upgrade the cheap model from CD-ROM to CD-RW and Roxio Easy CD Creator which came bundled with the CD-RW would not install because the software detected a prior version of Roxio Easy CD Creator installed. When going in to see what was installed. Roxio Easy CD Creator was not in the list. When going to http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptpruner.asp I downloaded and ran Karens Registry Pruner and found orphan registry entries which was the result of HP using a same image for multiple products of the same family, but they used a dirty uninstall method that left orphan registry entries as PART of every computer of this model that was ever made. It was part of the system recovery set, so HP had this hidden problem as part of the cheap computer for everyone who ever bought this model, and only those who tried to upgrade to CD-RW would have hit this roadblock. The only fix was to either borrow someones Windows Me OEM Disc to install clean or use this tool to remove the orphans. Used this tool to remove the orphan entries and problem resolved, was able to install Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and use it to burn CD's. Shortly later I got tired of Windows Me and upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional which was far better.Never, NEVER use registry utilities. They CAUSE problems, they don't cure them.bt allan.......you ALWAYS recommend cc cleaner too......He does...as do others.

Solve : red x in the box?

Answer» HELP! When I tried to put a smiley face on this post it refused. Please enlighten me the troubleshooting short cuts for this little red x in the box. When I try to open a video from utube or any other source on line it just gives me a red X in a box and says I don't have the plug ins. They all say to update flash player. No error code showed up when I did successfuly downloaded the latest flash player 11 and java script too, but to no avail. Still no video downloading. Same msg. Not even audio from a pod cast. I have a windows vista Turion 64 x2, ATI graphics and use AVG antivirus free addition. I've played with those SECURITY settings and graphics to try to make the proper adjustments.....I can't figure it out. Can You? I made a back up file on my D drive a few days ago that overloaded it = maxed it to 1% left. Deleted that and all my past cookie history....since then no slip streaming will come through. Not live and not video. Thanks 1.000,000Have you tried a different browser? Is your browser set to be able to load plugins and view IMAGES?My active x controls are enabled, In my tools add on box it shows I have Adobe shockwave and Java SSV HELPER installed...My computer often just stops responding in the middle of sessions in the past. Saying you have to install flash player? I noticed earlier you said that you only have Adobe Shockwave and Java installed, but not Flash... If you really have installed Flash player before, it may just be that the installation is corrupt.

Uninstall Flash player with the Adobe uninstaller and then reinstall it.
Also, are you running the latest version of IE?His protection apps are blockin it...could be that we don't know what they are yet...Greetings...I have installed the plug ins reccomended to update my system (Vista 7 ) for what ever technology came my way....to no avail. I still cannot use the little smiley faces even , nor live webstream or archives, u tube or video feed . I installed Google Chrome frame + tool bar, silverlight, real audio plyer, win amp, In a scan it said I have 5 out dated = ancient drivers and controllers. Could that be it? The installatios were successful but the various movies, videios and annimations STILL say I need to install a html 5 supported browser or update flash. I have ..... Still have the red x in the boxes.... What's next on the troublshooting list? Appreciate your time & Help!

Solve : Black Screen?

Answer»

Hello everyone....Here's today's idiot question. Watching Netflix this morning when the screen went black, the audio continued for a few seconds then the laptop completely shut down and would not start up again for around 20 min. It was only on for 1/2 hour. It's a 2 year old Toshiba laptop running windows 7. Thanks.Sounds like it may have overheated. Do you know if the laptop was hot to the touch when it shutdown. Also what is the exact make/model of the laptop?No...It was not hot.It was only on for a few min. Toshiba L655-S5150.Try running the laptop with the battery removed and only off of wall power and see if it behaves. Sometimes bad batteries can pull down the power SUPPLY and cause the laptop to act up or not boot.Just so you know a laptop can over-heat in as little as 90 seconds if something's amiss...Quote

Watching Netflix this morning when the screen went black, the audio continued for a few seconds then the laptop completely shut down and would not start up again for around 20 min

Having to wait 20 minutes before it will boot would be quite a while for a component to COOL down. Thats why i was thinking a bad battery might be pulling the power supply down, maybe a DEAD cell etc in my 2nd response when the laptop was cool to the touch.

All computers I have dealt with if they shut down due to thermal issue as a safety to protect CPU etc, they are able to be powered up shortly after they shut down and they will generally shut themselves down again quickly once again... never seen an overheat take 20 minutes unless it was so roasting hot to the touch and unable to cool itself BACK to below the temp theshold in which it keeps itself from powering up, just about to the point of catching on fire..lol

Only other thought is if the power cord/connection to the laptop has an issue it can be a dead battery and bad power connection and after 20 minutes the wire got bumped and all of a sudden it will boot up. I'd look at the LEDs on the laptop and verify that the LED for the indication that its being powered off of the outlet stays on solid when plugged into outlet and flexing the cord as well as carefully wiggling the connection to the laptop to see if the LED ever goes out to show that there is a intermittent OPEN circuit that is causing this issue.I do have a bad battery, so I'm always plugged in. When it was down I unplugged it and removed the battery for a sec and put it back..When it did restart it continued right where it left off..No restart.Thats strange isn't it?

Solve : Screen freezes random solid color?

Answer» Specs:

MSI motherboard
ATI Radeon HD 5670 video card
AMD Phenom Quad core processor
8gb RAM
Windows 7 64-bit (also happened when in XP, I installed 7 a few months ago.)

Problem:

-While using my computer, the screen will SUDDENLY freeze, change a solid color, (red, blue, green, it is random, sometimes with lines drawn through it vertically or horizontally) and the sound will either keep playing, stutter, or stop playing(also random).
-It tends to group together, if it FREEZES once, it will freeze several times in an hour, but then it might not freeze again for a week or so.
-If it matters, I have a dual screen display, the freeze affects both screens, the Main screen will turn a random color, the secondary will stay back-lit but the screen turns black always.
-It has been happening for about 6 months.

Other INFORMATION:

-This has not happened to me while playing games or other graphic intensive activities, it only happens when I am browsing the web or just watching videos, or writing. This might be coincidence, but about 75% of my time on my computer is playing games(Skyrim, Mirror's Edge, Amnesia, Vindictus, Portal, all high quality).
-It does happen in Safe Mode.
-No error messages pop up.
-Sometimes the "Windows was shut down unexpectedly" screen shows up and sometimes it does not. When it does not show up, the computer gets stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen, I left it sitting there for 8-9 hours and when I had returned it had still not started windows.

What I have done:

-First, I uninstalled/reinstalled my drivers for the video card and motherboard, and it worked okay for a few minutes then went into a series of crashes, same as before. Tried using old drivers, and new ones.
-Uninstalled Windows XP, formatted HD, and reinstalled Windows 7(for a different problem that was solved).
-Cleaned out case/Installed extra fan
-Ran the usual set of cleaners on the SYSTEM.
-Checked the Event Viewer, the event ID for the only error was 41, "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." All other events were only Information events about normal processes.
-My temps (running only Chrome, over 2 hour period) Motherboard 33-35C, Processor 24-27C, Video Card 48-52C
Running games (specifically Skyrim and Portal 2, high SETTINGS, over 2 hour period) Motherboard 34-37C, Processor 26-30C, Video Card 50-55C

Thank you to anyone who can help me. If I need to buy some new item for my computer, could someone recommend something that would work with my system? I am poor with knowing hardware. I would like to solve this without buying anything, if possible.

Let us first go over the basics:
To stress-test your system to check for errors you might want to use the following programs:
IntelBurnTest for your CPU: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/IntelBurnTest.shtml Run it on Standard, 1024MB, for 10 passes. If your system gets unstable in the process it will tell you.
Furmark for your Graphics card: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/FurMark.shtml Run the 720p benchmark. If your system gets unstable there will be artifacting on the screen or the picture will freeze.
MemTest86+ for your RAM: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/Memtest86-plus.shtml Run it for 10 passes. It will indicate if there is a read/write error if your RAM is faulty.

I am pretty sure it is a hardware error; if it happened back when you had XP and also in Safe Mode it is not a software issue.

I have had an identical issue with a laptop that cropped up after I installed a WLAN card that drew too much power. The hard drive indicator did not light up.
What is the make and model of your PSU?
If possible, borrow a known working power supply from a friend and test... Also, please provide the exact model of your motherboard...Sorry it took me so long to respond.

IntelBurnTest result: No errors
Furmark Result: No freezing or errors (Results 954 points 16fps)
MemTest86+ result: No errors

I will try waiting until my computer goes into a set of freezes and run the tests then, it is annoying because I really do not know how to replicate the issue, it seems to happen on its own.

My Power Supply I replaced about 2 months ago (went from Corsair 430w to a Corsair GS600 system), I have also tested on a Logisys 600w, can not remember the part number though.

Motherboard is a MSI 870A-G54.

Thank you for your response.I was expecting your coputer to fail Furmark because of the extremey high stress that your graphics card is subjected to...
You have already replaced your power supply, and 600W is more than enough for a low-mid end graphics card like your HD 5670 which doesn't require an auxiliary power connector...

I find it plain weird that the crashes do not occur when playing games... got me stumped here...
I have this odd hunch that its yout RAM... because games make more use of the graphics VRAM and after the game is loaded into memory it, well, just sits there, at least until you save your game, whereas when you are browsing webpages your computer continuously caches webpages into memory...

What I would try:
1) Turn your PC off completely, unplug it from the wall outlet and then press the power button (without plugging it back in)
2) Reset CMOS while the computer is off (just move the jumper back and forth)
3) Move your graphics card to the other PCIe slot (so we can simultaneously test for IRQ conflicts)
4) Boot with only one stick of RAM inserted and then start browsing webpages or do whatever you think causes the problem.
5) If the error persists, switch it to a different RAM slot (alternate with all sticks of RAM until the error goes away; there might be a faulty stick of RAM in your 8GB causing the issue)
6) If the error still doesn't go away, try slightly bumping the RAM voltage in the BIOS (around +0.05V, don't go too high)
7) Browse random webpages.
8 ) If the error still doesn't go away, try slighly bumping the voltage of the CPU in the BIOS (around +0.05V too, don't go too high)
9) Browse random webpages.
10) I hope you are not reading this, but by now I think it is probably your motherboard that is the issue. All right, here is what is happening currently...

I reset the CMOS, and moved the Video card. I noticed that instead of 2 sticks of 4g RAM (which is what I thought I had) I actually had 2 sticks of 8, making 16 total. Whoops!

I removed one of the sticks and tried to reproduce the error, but couldn't, tried with the other stick and couldn't get it to freeze with that one either. I ran with both sticks perfectly fine. I am going to assume it was something to do with changing the slot of the video card. *shrugs*

Thank you so very much for your help, and if this happens again I will reference this thread but for now I will mark as solved.

Very happy now!I have exactly the same problem.

Same as you, I don't have the problem while I'm playing games or watching a film. Even if I have, it is much less frequently. Instead I generally have the problem while browsing on web. But sometimes as soon as I boot the pc, after Windows' password screen, problem occurs.

In addition:

When I install a driver for my video card from its website, no matter which version I install, I start having new problems while having the old ones. For example it often gives an error: "Display driver has stopped working and recovered". Screen goes black for 2 seconds and then it gives the error message. This happens like 2-3 times on every session then pc freezes, obligating me to reboot.

To solve this, I did remove the driver I downloaded from nVidia's web site. I am now using the Windows 8's included driver. Now I never have the "Display driver stopped" error. However, the problem which you also had persists.

I want to be able to install the latest driver and have no problem. Some games want me to update my drivers and I can't

The problem is so weird that I can't even be sure if it is the video card or something else.

By the way, I had a different screen freeze today, made me suspicios about the video card only. Because I had the solid color screen but music kept playing. My G15 keyboard's screen did not stop responding. And via using the keyboard shortcuts, I was able to see that pc was not stuck at all. But still, most of the time, I have the problem with a frozen PC.

My specs:

Gigabyte 890xa-ud3 Motherboard
ASUS Nvidia GTS250 GDDR3 1GB 256Bit DX10 Video Card
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition AM3 3.4GHz 8MB Cache 45nm
KINGSTON 4GB (2*2GB) Hyperx DDR3 1600MHz CL9 XMP Dual Channel
Windows 8 64-bit

I would really appreciate your help. I am ready to change the video card's slot but I am not sure if my motherboard is ok with that.

What I have done:

-First, I uninstalled/reinstalled my drivers for the video card and motherboard, and it worked okay for a few minutes then went into a series of crashes, same as before. Tried using old drivers, and new ones.

Thank you to anyone who can help me. If I need to buy some new item for my computer, could someone recommend something that would work with my system? I am poor with knowing hardware. I would like to solve this without buying anything, if possible. Thank you to Transfusion who was helping before.
I have a theory that this is related to the graphics card not being able to handle too low clocks. (I know, sounds strange, but... I searched around on Google and some people who want performance computing want their core clocks at max and their memory clocks at minimum, and usually the PC will crash when the mem clock goes too low.)
I get my idea from http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=670833 and several threads on GPU-based Bitcoin mining.

First of all, in your BIOS, disable AMD Cool 'N Quiet, if it is enabled.
Second, while you are browsing webpages or just sitting on your desktop, have a small DirectX program looping in the background just so your graphics card will run at 3D clocks, like this demo http://downloadcenter24.com/video-and-dvd/rthdribl.html just run it and keep it minimized. Then keep browsing webpages or do whatever you think causes the problem.Hello again, and thanks so much for all of your help so far.

Okay, AMD Cool N' Quiet was set to Auto, so I disabled it. I have been running rthdribl and have not crashed yet. Ran without rthdribl and found a way to make my system crash, specifically having 3+ tabs/windows open, and playing music or watching a video.

I will be running with rthdribl for the next few days just to be sure, but if it is that my graphics card can't handle low clocks, how would I adjust that? I am afraid overclocking is something I have never done before.

Thank you!
I agree with transfusion about it being related to the graphics card. I've been through two graphics cards on my main computer. It seems like there are a lot more defective ones out now. Do you have a cheap graphics card that you can just test in the comp to see if it resolves the problem. It looks like you have already tried everything else I would have Unfortunately I do not have another card to test it with. I was going to try connecting my monitor to the motherboard directly, but the plug on my monitor is the same as the connector on the board (male to male) so that will not work either. I will try to find a spare card to test though, thanks!

I still have not managed to crash (as long as I have rthdribl running) so I think it is just a matter of fixing what Transfusion said, about low clocks. This is quite relevant to your problem:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/281111-33-overdrive-underclocks
Apparently people are experiencing identical issues to yours with HD 5850s and dual monitor setups with AMD Overdrive enabled.

Quote

its because you have dual monitors (or more). I am using dual monitors and my 2d low power clocks are 400/900. if you are using single monitor they are 157/300.
Ah... that explains.

the 2d clock seems to be the problem you can access the the clock rates though the profile manger in options though the save config file that appers when you save a profile locataion C:\Users\{yourusername}\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\PROFILES

i have applied the setting like instructed it didn't help but then i played with the voltage setting i set it to

<Property name="Want_2" value="1125"/>

which is 1 VOLT
that seem to help i also set the core clock and the memeroy to

This is the options in the AMD control center, right? There is no *option* tab, and when I try to save an application profile, it does not save. There is a drop-down menu in the 3D control center that says *New Application* but no applications are listed. I can not find settings for any 2D clocks. I have attached a screenshot to illustrate.

Also, there is no AppData folder in C:\Users\(my name)\. The only AppData folder I could find is under C:\Windows\System32\Config\SteamProfiles
There are several ATI folders but none that have a subfolder or file named ACE or Profiles.

Thank you.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Yeah but from what I know of the Vision Control Center and AMD Overdrive doesn't allow changing of desktop clocks...

You need to have "show hidden folders" enabled to access the AppData folder...Thanks, Transfusion, I found the folder and altered the profile. Have not crashed yet, will wait a few days this time before marking as solved again.

You guys are great! Thanks so much!Once more I return, my computer froze up again today, although it took more that it did before (I had several tabs open, was playing music, had a few Notepads open too).

I made sure I was still running the altered profile (I was) and I checked the event viewer (still no events).

The computer seemed to stutter for a moment before it froze, which was new, I was scrolling down the page when the desktop stuttered into view (the browser window disappeared for a moment), then everything froze. I can replicate the freeze but not the stutter.

I was using both monitors. My temps were around 38 C, video card was 44 C. Thanks for any help.Hmm... This is quite a sticky problem... Since it didn't crash with RTHDRIBL... let's have it run in 3D mode at all times.
For the clocks:

<Property name="Want_0" value="1130"/>
<Property name="Want_1" value="1130"/>
<Property name="Want_2" value="1130"/> Okay put in the new code, and applied the profile. No crash yet, Once again I will wait a few days before marking as solved, thanks again. ^.~Well it crashed again today, while watching YouTube videos (I did not have rthdribl running at the time). I checked and I was running the modified profile. It also got stuck on the screen where it shows my motherboard specs, I could not even get into BIOS. I had to restart 3-4 times to get it to start. Thanks for all your help. ^.^

I have been thinking of GETTING a new video card, both to test with and upgrade, do you think this would help? What kind would be compatible? How old is the power supply ?

I doubt you've got a PSU of equal/greater wattage laying around, but if you can get a cheap digital muti-meter for 20 bucks, google how to test a power supply and test that sucker out.

If it's not the psu, it's probably your video card failing.I have tested with a seperate PSU, both less than 6 months and both 600 watts. I am prepared to buy an upgraded videocard anyways, but I am not sure what kind would be compatible. Thanks though.

it's a Dell Inspiron M5010 AMD PHENOM II N870 Triple Core Processor 2.30 GHz with 6GB ram and 640GB HD with Windows 7If it doesn't happen again don't WORRY about it.yea thats what i was thinking since its an ie9 error figured it wasnt anything to be worried about, what threw me off a little was that it said memory error thats why i POSTED just to CHECK on it, anyway thank you

Solve : Some help 0x0000007f Win7 64bit?

Hello. I've been constantly having this BSOD for 3 months. Never had such persistent problem before so i'm looking for some input.
I started having problems when i attached a WD passport hdd to my pc - it would constantly crash, i couldn't overclock my cpu and i couldn't put more than 4gb of ram. Then i found out there's an option i had to DISABLE in bios for it to work right and the problems seemingly stopped. I could overclock my cpu and put more ram but shorty after problems started occuring again, i rolled back everything i did even reinstalled my windows but 7f still happens. I'm CURRENTLY removed the hdd and waiting to see if it happens again. The problem is i have no idea what could be causing it if the hdd is not the problem, and if it is i have no option of not using it - i have a lot of files on it.
I've downloaded a PROGRAM CALLED blue screen view and here's what it shows:

You have RAM issues...on top of OC'ing making things HARDER to diagnose...
DLoad and run MemTest from a bootable CD...let it run minimum 1 hour...
Any errors at all you have a bad/mismatched stick of RAM.

I'd also suggest undoing any clocking until we find out what the issue is.I've undone any clocks. I currently run with one 2x2gb kit (Gskill). I've changed it with the other 2x2gb kit (A-data) to see if 7f happens. It still does. I even though of changing the motherboard.

I'll run memtest now.Seeya in an hour...Ran a bit more than an hour, no errors. I'm shutting down for the night, i'll see what tomorrow brings.

Solve : Diskette seek failure?

Answer»

Thats my problem I can't get into.the BIOS. I can't get into.safe mode it.still says the disk failure thing and goes into launch startup repair or start normally which I can't. Is there another way to get into bios ot am I doing it wrong? You get into the bios before the error message. Watch the screen as soon as the SYSTEM boots. As soon as you SEE the message, PRESS the F2 function key.I dont know what to do when I get in there. And I ran hard drive diagnodtics my.hard drive passed but for my cd rom it said not supported. I dont know if that means anything and IM sorry for being such a paini looked at my boot sequence and my hard drive is first but it says that my hard drive and floppy arent present? what do i do about that? and i have another drive with a bunch of letters starting with WD. The blue error message screen says something about a technical message then numbers then(0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)The error message cannot be al 0's...
Repost the entire message including the gibberish.Error message technical message ** STOP0x00008086 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)Quote

This GENERAL indication of a hardware failure is often quite difficult to pin down. Follow usual hardware troubleshooting protocols, in particular: Roll-back any recent hardware or driver changes; ensure that RAM sticks are matched and undamaged; check for viruses or hard drive damage; run ChkDsk to identify file system problems; ensure that all connections are sound inside the computer and all cards well-seated. In tough cases you may need to consult a professional shop for hardware diagnosis and repair.

I really don't understand what you are saying.

In the bios boot device order, is the hard drive the first device? Does it show a second hard drive? If so, move that to the top also. Save and exit.

If that doesn't work, try the option to RESET the bios to default settings. Save and exit.

Solve : M$ Office "Click-to-Run" uninstall?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

Haven't been around for awhile...sorry about that but when you have 10 acres devastated by a fire and all your personal forest is gone and you need to replant and irrigate it doesn't leave you much TIME for anything else.

Anyway...the issue. I have a client with a new HP laptop / W7-64bit / M$ Office STARTER installed. She has purchased Outlook 2010 ONLINE and when she goes to install it the message comes up "This 64-bit product may not be installed with Microsoft Office Click-to-Run. Remove Microsoft Office Click-to-Run and try again."

After a little research M$ says the following..."to uninstall Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 from your computer, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click the Add or Remove Programs item or click the Programs and Features item.
In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 and then click Uninstall.
Click Yes when you are prompted to remove all applications that were installed by Office Click-to-Run.

Now the question is if she runs the uninstall does it remove, according to M$, Word and Excel, which she needs? or just the C2R installer?

THANKS folks.
