Solve : I cannot uninstall Nero 9 Trial?

Answer»

I have tried it at least 5 times. It says it was successfully uninstalled but it never disappears from the Programs and Features window. Any suggestions? Is it still on your Program menu? If so, will the program start if you click on it? Sometimes installation programs leave behind a lot of crap. Download RevoUninstaller and use it to uninstall the program.Quote from: Linux711 on April 14, 2012, 07:28:52 PM

Sometimes installation programs leave behind a lot of crap. Download RevoUninstaller and use it to uninstall the program.
I second that. Most uninstall apps do not remove all the application data and registry entries.Even Revo doesn't always get everything.

That SAID. I only uninstall using Revo but then I take a quick second STEP and scan the software name with Everything search engine. It only takes a few seconds and more often then not it will find a few leftovers.evil, My impression (from just having tried "Everything") that it functions only the one instance of the search and to use it again it needs to be downloaded again. Is that correct? It does NOT appear in my "programs".truenorthDid you download the .exe or the .zip?

The .zip is portable so will not install. The .exe will (or should) install. Mine is in C:\Program Files (x86)\EverythingDidn't note but i suspect it was an .exe as i did not have to unzip anything. Used it on an XP desktop to remove vestiges of Norton (which it seems to have done well). But now I'm on a laptop with win 7 so I'll do a search tomorrow and see if i can locate the program. However no advisory of "new programs installed" CAME up.Thanks, truenorth Hmm. I just did a new install of it and didn't see anything that would make it a tricky install.

Used these options and it is in my start menu and program files.

Thanks everyone for your input. It worked and I was able to remove the 14 other files in my registry that Nero seemed to dig it's claws into. But it's gone now.A little late but I found this. Might come in handy for someone in the future. Nero General CleanTool (click the Nero General CleanTool tab)Evil, Still haven't gotten to the XP computer yet but something i do notice from your last post.Whereas you left ticked the 3 DEFAULT choices i unchecked ALL of them (because i did not desire any of them). However i would not have thought that would have affected it's appearance in programs.truenorthThis is why i gave up on Nero years ago...CDBurnerXPro is a good Free replacement.

Solve : Unknown logon entries into my Yahoo account - any ideas??

Answer»

Was checking my yahoo log on entries and noticed a log on about a week ago from Pakistan. Also, tried to buy an itunes song and payment was rejected because "they do not allow payments from a foreign country"?? What gives? Something might be wrong here. I also have been getting IM messages from unknown people that arrive when I am logged off Yahoo .

Teenager in the house ? ?No there aren't any teenagers...as for the IM it is suspiciously a spam or phishing attempt as the "message" is garbled, in color, and combines unrelated words into a sentence INCLUDING random upper and lower case characters. Thanks for you input.Well it's a known fact that phishers and spammers will use anything at their disposal including IM...

I doubt he would be able to grab any of your sensitive data...unless you posted it in a reply.Just got another IM this morning. I have already changed my password. It isn't all that frequent (maybe twice a week) that when I check my email there is and instant message received while I was offline (always while I am offline). Can I make it stop. Is this related to the log on from Pakistan that showed up in my Yahoo Log On list?

Thanks again for you thoughts.I personally don't use Yahoo IM...but i believe you can right clik the offending User and block it.Yes that's true...and I do click "Block Sender" each timwe this occurs - so it must somehow work around that function. Any ideas?Start a new account...that or report it to Yahoo...

Solve : Ext'l hard drive - no drive letter/letters?

Answer»

I have done a fairly deep search but failed to come up with an answer so - here's hoping I am not intruding by asking a repeat question.

First - HP 4600 work station, quite new, 2Gb RAM, Intel duo E6850 @ 3 GHz. 2x 250Gb WD SATA HDD's, partitioned, Kingston USB hub, internal quad card reader, Ultra SCSI card, Nvidia 1700 dual mon vid.

I already use successfully up to three external HDD's for backup etc with no problem - in fact USB anything is pretty OK - (as is the case on my Lenovo XP pro backup machine) . However, this HP machine replaces my old custom machine which went sour recently and tho most data was backed up I have a few items I want to pull off two (partitioned) 150Gb HDD's from it.

I have tried both HDD's in my CompUSA ext'l hard drive enclosure (which has worked on many of my old HDD's) - but I have a problem. The OS ''Sees" the drive and seemingly sets it up as OK - but - does not allocate a darned drive letter so - can't get in! Same on the Lenovo in fact.

I took a peek within Computer management/disk management - and the drive shows but no letter. In the top listing it shows as 35Gb with 4.1Gb spare - well that would be one partition. The lower pictorial representation however shows it as 150Gb, basic, healthy/active - but looking like all one with no partition! Shows too as NTFS. Right click contect menu is all greyed out except for "delete partition' and 'help'

So - here we are - drive ''recognized'' but - no access - thus I am seeking opinion/advice as to what measures I could take to get past this hurdle. Both old drives were set up and partitioned under XP pro on old machine. Really puzzled - when other old drives will show via the external HDD enclosure - and those were used within Win 95 and Win 2k! These are all ATA but that shouldn't matter.

BTW - checked within Removeable Storage/libraries - and the drive does not show - just my flash drives and DVD ROM.

Any advice would be most welcome.ChrisXPPro,Given your comments it appears you are far from a stranger in regards to knowledge re external HDD's. I suspect that is true for both standalone externals and internals converted to cases. Therefore i could assume (but won't--in case it is one of those times in life where the answer to "are you sure it is plugged in " results in it being unplugged.Hope you can follow the analogy. All this to say--my experience has shown that internal HDD"s can need to be set to varying jumper positions before placing them in a case in order for them to function.I don't know yet whether it is the brand of case that determines this, the brand of HDD,the operating system,or whatever. But from past experience i have found it can make a difference as to how it is perceived and handled by a computer. For what it's worth--maybe not much. goodluck, truenorthtruenorth - many thx for the response. Yep - all plugged in!

All other old HDD's I have used in the ext'l enclosure have been effectively ''de-jumpered'' so that they are standalone as against master or slave. I may out of curiosity see what happens with some jumper changes.

These drives are WD 1600's "Caviar" - good ol drive usually. The case is, best I can tell, all that should be required - it just has a short IDE ribbon and power plug to connect an HDD - and as I mentioned - thing is several old other drives when hooked up (de-jumpered) - are accepted and ascribed partition drive letters just fine - this is what makes it right now puzzling. Right now it is an enigma and I know the data is there!

Thx again.ChrisXPPro,Just curious--when you 1st introduced the WD 1600's (in the case) to the computer through the Usb port what was the responce of the computer. Was there a "new USB device found"? And if so what came next?Because if you did not get that it occurs to me that the computer may have detected something but not what it should have to recognize that it was an external HDD.However even that notion is shaky given that it does give data regarding the drive (IE: file type, size, etc). One suggestion i can advance to try and determine if the fault is with the case or it's enclosed drive versus the computer having a problem dealing with it is to try the case/drive combination in another computer's USB port and see what happens. I am sure that you have tried all the available ports in the computer that you are having the problem with. What ,if anything shows up in device manager in regards to your USB hubs when the device is plugged in and turned on?Have you tried an "install new hardware" to see what it finds if anything? This sure is a puzzlement given that it obviously finds something just not enough.truenorthThx again truenorth - it's as big of a puzzle to you methinks!

1) - computer response? - typical of any new USB addition - usual bubble "found new hardware" and then a pause and finally ''your hardware is ready to use". But - no darned drive letter as usually occurs. Of course now it has been ''recognized'' first time I can just plug in and get the usual Win acceptance sound - and no drive letter!

2) - Try another computer? - as I mentioned in original post, this was tried on my Lenovo backup machine - exactly same effect. Out of interest - same effect with Vista - which came on this HP 4600 until I grew rapidly disgusted with it and downgraded to XP! Guess we can say the problem is consistent!

3) - Device manager - good thinking. Just tried that and as it was recognized it showed up within the disk drive list - "initio WD1600JB-OOGVAO USB device". Shows as FUNCTIONING normally.! Check in win explorer tho and of course - no change in drive letters! Tried front of case USM port and one of hub ports - no difference.

If I check ''safely remove hardware" - the darned thing shows too, along with other items - albeit with no ascribed drive letter! Just done a scan for PnP hardware changes from device manager - no benefit.

So - still wierd - everything seems OK except for no drive letter. I would expect as per with other ext'l drives to see letters "Q", "R" and "S" added in explorer as I recall three partitions. Oh well - mystery remains but still hoping there is some ''tweak'' I have over looked that could force this to do what is needed.Hello Chris. Have you read this?

New drive or mapped NETWORK drive not available in Windows Explorer

Let us know if it helps or not.

-- GokuGoku - thanks for suggestion. It is useful in as much as it shows this as a known issue but thus far I don't think it's going to solve things.

One reason is - their suggestion of ascribing a drive letter from within Disk management is no go - as right click context menu has that optioned greyed out! Then they refer to a hotfix but when I dug deeper it appears the hotfix is for SP3 - and I am certainly not ready yet to ''risk'' applying SP3. From a Win Update POV the system is tho up to date - it took 94 items to get it done after my XP SP2 downgrade.

Thanks tho ever so much for the help - from which I think somehow I am going to have to wait either, for some other idea or, perhaps hold off until I eventually go to SP3 and then try a hotfix approach. If I can find someone with a reasonably up to date system on their puter then just perhaps I can try on that and use another external to copy over to ...... could be I have too many drive letters but as mentioned earlier, this does not affect other extern'l drives.

I always place my DVD near the top - "Y" for this one ..... and even with my internal card reader and two flash drives sitting in hub - letters are clear from"P" all way up to the DVD - which other drives use just fine.

Appreciate inputs - thank you guys.OK Chris, I think I have finally identified the cause of the problem. From what I have read, people have been experiencing these problems because they had too many drives mapped and therefore there wasn't a free letter to assign to the new drive. According to your DESCRIPTION, I think that when you connect the USB device, it all becomes "too much" for the computer to handle. To resolve this, either remap an existing drive letter or remove a mapped device to free the assigned letter temporarily.

No Drive Letter for USB or Firewire Drive

Let us know if it helps or not. Good Luck.

-- GokuGoku - well something else to consider I agree. Thanks.

I removed my 2 flash drives - but left the card reader as that means getting into case to disconnect. This anyways gives me free letters from "M" - the last card reader letter - thru up to DVD at "Y". Oh forgot - HP recovery partition is set as "P".

No effect on the problem - plus as I mentioned before, if I hook up any of the three dedicated ext'l drives, they will all settle nicely to pick up available drive letters - including placing their partition letters ''around'' that "P" of the HP partition.

Right now with USB sticks back in ... I have everything used up to and including "P" - and so there is a chunk of available letters - 8 in fact - between that and the DVD on "Y" - which suits all the externals just fine.

No - something else has to be odd here - note how earlier I was seeing this WD 1600 in Disk management - as one drive of 150Gb in the pictorial display (working and healthy) NTFS ... and in the text listing showing as seemingly just one of the partitions at around 35Gb and 4.1 Gb free! This in itself is odd. Remember too - I can put one of my old HDD's from Win 2k machine or even an old Win 95 into this drive enclosure and bring them up fine!

This is definitely specific to these WD 1600 drives it seems - they are just not ''seen'' for what they actually are, tho I'd still expect to see one drive letter at very least!.ChrisXPPro,
It is nice to see Goku on board and hopefully others may also show up (Broni or patio would be nice).I do agree that it certainly appears to be uniquely associated with the WD drives.Have you tried calling them re the issue.Suggest phone as e-mail tech support with all the toing and frowing could take forever. My recollection is that WD is quite good with their phone tech support.Did you ever try changing the jumper locations yet?Have you always been using the same case. When i had a recognition problem i was able to solve it by changing the case (even though i had 3 which were totally identical. Hang in there a solution may be coming. truenorthOh yes - forgot to mention jumpering ... I did try master set up - no good at all. Finally went for 'single neutral' which is pins 4 and 6 (10 pin config) ........ but that is in theory no different from no jumpers for 'single'. No point IMO in setting up as slave tho tried it for FUN - seems same effect as no jumpers.

I might indeed try calling WD if I can get thru.

This case is the only one I have so no chance to try others but yet again I come back to how well it performs with numerous other ex puter int'l drives.Sometimes...when you have a system with multiple card readers...you'll experience this problem.

Have you tried manually assigning a drive letter to the drive?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844Saviour, thx - could well be I'll try disconnecting card reader as an experiment, altho that reader does not affect other externals from working, including old drives in my drive enclosure.

Manually changing drive letter is not an option as - mentioned earlier - tho the drive shows in Disk Management, right click options are greyed out for drive letter choice - apart from ''help'' only other option is clear partition! What's the drives status is Disk Management? Healthy?

Is there anything on this drive...or is it used mainly for backup? If it's free for use as you see fit...why not have Disk Management repartition it, FORMAT it NTFS, and see if making it active allows access to the adjusting the drive letter.

I don't think disconnecting the card reader will have any effect...maybe...we'll have to wait and see.

I've read some posts on other forums I frequent where a mulitple card reader can cause such an issue. While Windows is supposed to automatically assign the drive letter, but then doesn't. I haven't seen a work around for it yet.

Please keep us posted...Saviour,Quote from: Saviour on July 06, 2008, 08:58:33 PM

Solve : No sound on Dell precision M4500 after 'Dariks boot and Nuke'?

Answer»

Hi guys, any help is really appreciated!

So I downloaded 'Dariks boot and nuke' (www.DBAN.org) to WIPE my second hand Dell precision M4500, a bit too excessive maybe.. ha so I have reinstalled my OS, Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL and downloaded:

''IDT 92HDxxx HD Audio, v.6.10.0.6292, A17 ' from Dell :http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/precision-m4500

'cbsidlm-tr1_13-Realtek_High_Definition_Audio_Codec_Windows_Vista__Windows_7__Windows_8_64bit-ORG-75317047 (1).exe'
From Cnet.

In the device manager I see 4 'High definition audio device' that all say not plugged in and one IDT high definition audio CODEC that SAYS that it is working properly.

I think the problem is that I have deleted something with 'Dariks boot and nuke' that isn't normally deleted so it is HARD to find a solution for it. But really I don't know so please help me if you do!All the drivers for that Model need to be DLoaded and installed from Dell...
Chipset driver goes 1st...then a re-boot...then all others.

Most likely the sound driver is reliant on the chipset driver being present and installed correctly.

Solve : Runtime error on several programs (Otome games)?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I am new here, I did post my question on Mod the SIMS but no-one knew what to do.

Recently I have got interested in Otome games (Japanese dating games for girls, they are LIKE those books where you pick your ending). I DOWNLOADED a few and tried to install them. The first one I tried works absolutely FINE.

But I have tried to install at least 4 other games, and each time I try to run them I get 'Runtime Error! Program C: Program Files (x86)\(name of game etc..........) This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.'

These games are all by different people, so I think the problem is with my LAPTOP. My laptop is:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
System Manufacturer: Toshiba
System Model: Satellite C660
BIOS: Phoenix Secure Version 1.80
Processor: Intel® Pentium ® CPU P6100 @2.00GHz (2 CPU’s), ~2.0GHz lz
Memory: 6144MB RAM
Page file: 1843MB used, 10031MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

I have googled my problem, and tried a few things. I have:
1. Tried running as an administrator
2. Tried running in compatibilty mode
3. Downloaded this: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
4. Tried a 'clean boot'
5. Cleaned my registry using CCleaner

I have been on the internet for hours trying to find out what to do, and I am really confused. Most of the results I get are relating to other programs or other games, and don't seem to be relevant.

Please will someone help me? I haven't got a clue what to do, I will be eternally grateful if you can help! Thankyou

Solve : comp keeps shutting down?

Answer»

have a dell inspiron 5030, was fine, all of a sudden shut down, now will not boot, have tried everything, safe mode, startup repair, last known good config, everything i try, goes to black screen, then will shut down. even tried to boot to windows dvd so i COULD do a reinstall, but same thing, just keeps shutting down,
any ideas? also, cleaned it , so dont think its over heatingHow did you clean it ? ?
Sounds like you may have dislodged a connector or possibly a jumper...
In the meantime try and borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there OVERNIGHT...you'll know if thats the culprit.the cleaning was after it wasnt working, just blew it out. as for psu, do U mean power adapter? i just tried with battery in only, no adapter and same thing, it shut down
Laptop...nevermind.
Was this unit dropped ? ?no, not dropped, nothing installed recently, when i hit startup repair, it loads, but then black screen for a while, then it shuts downok, i just switched out hard drive with known working one, just to see if that was the problem, but alas, still shut down, could it be ram?
they MADE this thing very hard to get to ramRAM isn't normally a cause of shutdown...have you put in a ticket to the manuf. Support site ? ?
Perhaps they may have some clues...thanks for help, turned out to be a bad hard driveGlad you found out what it was...
Not sure why the HDD would cause shutdowns but at least it's a relatively easy fix.

Solve : two operating systems on one computer, xp and vista.?

Answer»

I have a desktop that had windows vista installed. I was having file upload problems so decided
to load windows Xp Home Edition with the CD. After I installed Windows Xp, only windows Xp loads with no choices. I installed it in a separate folder. I can see the other windows folder on the c drive. I want to delete xp and just go back and use vista. How can I do that? For future reference, older OS's should be installed first, then newer versions - otherwise the boot manager won't know about both versions. For now, you can use the free versions of EasyBCD to MANAGE your boot loader: http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/Do not install old after new, install NEW AFTER OLD.If you don't, the old will never work. Maybe a BOOTMGR deleted? Hal.dll, NTOSKRNL, C_437 errors? Config/software, config/sam, config/default, config/system errors? Crashes? What exactly is happening? Is there any "FATAL: COULD not read from boot medium! System halted.", or "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." errors?
Try booting from the CD, waiting, pressing R, selecting your XP installation, typing in the admin password, then type in fixmbr and hit enter.
When it warns you, hit Y and press enter.
Next, type in fixboot and press enter.
Again, press Y and hit enter.
Next. type exit and hit enter.
See if booting into the XP works now.I Dual boot on my computer I use for work between XP Pro and Vista but I installed Vista and any programs on a different partition. I already had XP originally installed so I didn't think twice and installed Vista after. They both run smooth but I don't like Vista all that much and will probably try a third boot option with 7 or just replace Vista with 7. Don't know if any of this helps but hopefully it does.

Can't see that it helps. You installed new after old which is why it worked FINE for you. But, the necessity of that approach has already been established in previous posts.

Solve : Buy Windows 7 cdheap on Recertified PC?

Answer»

How many people know this? While new PCs are coming with MS Windows 8, Microsoft is making money selling Windows 7 to companies that refurbish, reload and certify computers taken off-lease.
And Microsoft says its good. And it is green. And you save green.

Quote

Get a professionally refurbished PC with Windows 7 at a great value.
Windows 7 is designed to make your PC simpler and the things you do every day easier. With Windows 7 and Windows Live Services, you can create, connect, and share with your refurbished PC and the cloud.

Microsoft Refurbished PC program members offer enhanced value because they pre-install genuine Microsoft software, provide data wiping security services, and use environmentally SUSTAINABLE best practices when refurbishing computers.
http://www.microsoft.com/refurbishedpcs/buy.aspx
Here is just ONE example from a link given by MS.

Toshiba 10 inch 32GB tablet $270.
Same VENDOR has Dell LATITUDE D820 Notebook (Refurbished) - Intel Core Duo 2 you can buy Refurbished: $199.89

Many vendors offer warranty and payment options.

So what do you think? Do you believe in recycling?
Works for me.

You're buying a refurbished PC with Win7 on it...
The liscense is tied to the PC itself...

Your Topic title suggests it's a cheap way to get Win7...mis-leading at best.Well.. you understood what it means. Surely most CH readers would also understand you can not use the Windows 7 on another PC. But a good refurbished PC may be better than the hardware they already have.
The Toshiba tablet mentioned sells for twice the price when new. If you really want Windows 7, not Windows 8, the refurbished Toshiba the the economical way to buy and save the planet as well. And have the OS you want.

Also, Patio, the terms of EULA require the user to comply with it as specified by MS N either the vendor or anybody can change that. The user may use the Software and hardware fully. The EULA does not prevent the user from enjoyment of his software and hardware, even if it costs less than what you might expect. Nothing in the EULA says that a low price makes the user a thief. I did not intend to use the word cheap to mean shoddy
I can see you missed my point entirely...Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 07, 2013, 04:17:44 PM

Sure. Why not? Windows 7 will run on many older systems. I have it running on a Pentium 4, 2.6GHz system.

Solve : Problem with IE control?

Answer»

I am having a problem with what I think is the IE control that programs can use to display html. Whenever I open a program that uses the IE web browser control, it asks me to download whatever file it is trying to display instead of displaying it. It is getting extremely annoying because I have to cancel the download and then nothing is displayed in the frame. I can't open mmc because it uses html and a bunch of other programs. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE tell me why it is trying to download the files instead of just showing them? Is there an installation program I can use to either replace or fix anything related to the IE web browser control? The version of IE wasn't mentioned...
However See Here... for a fix...After trying what you suggested and a ton of other stuff, I began exporting registry keys from a working machine. I started with the \software\microsoft\internet explorer key and the internet settings key which didn't do anything. I eventually DECIDED to export the entire classes key which fixed the problem. I had to do a REG clean after though because there were MANY programs and components on the machine I copied from that were not on the destination machine. So it was probably just some type of file association problem because that's what the classes key is for as far as I know.I never RECOMMEND hackin the registry as a solution for anything...however i'm glad it worked for you.

I have had sims 3 for ages but something in the game stopped working so I uninstalled everything and then installed the game again. When I went to open the game using the shortcut it said it is not a valid win32 application. What do i need to do? copy the "sims3launcher.exe" file in the sims 3 folder(the one with the LAUNCHER problem)don't replace OLD file but just rename it or another option You can also fix it by entering your SimS 3 DVD in your drive and going to my computer and Exploring the icon, Open Game then BIN and copy Sims3launcher.ex_ and rename it to sims3launcher.exe and replace it the same way you did.

You dont need to SAVE the old file since its CORRUPTED anyways.

Solve : Windows Media Player Won't Play?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Compaq 6515B laptop running Windows Vista 32 bit version. I have a problem with my MEDIA Player. It will play Youtube videos or other .flv videos FINE, but if I try to play a DVD in my DVD player I get the following message:

http://www.screencast.com/t/pfovzdkt

So I went to the Mircrosoft site and tried to download another version of Media Player and got the following message:

http://www.screencast.com/t/p6gQzkHrIrF

Can anyone offer any SUGGESTIONS?

Thanks! One of my friends had a similar issue, although it wasnt Vista, it was XP. His solution was to not use Windows Media Player for watching DVD movies, so he installed a DVD Movie Player off of a DVD that came with one bundled with it. He then bought an external DVD-RW drive and that came bundled with better software called WinDVD Player.

I use PowerDVD on my Windows 7 system myself vs Windows Media Player for watching movies. I got this software bundled with a new DVD-RW internal drive that I bought when i upgraded from IDE to SATA for my optical drive for faster DVD Burns. This may get your attention.

I wanted to use a recent post. The link posted links to alternatives for WMP. The author mentions VLC is now getting attention with the Windows 8 people, but VLC works with many version of Windows. And it often works when WMP does not. And it can even repair some damaged files. And it can re-write into another format if you want. Lots of good reasons to have VLC on any Windows system.

Solve : Screen Saver covers Netflix until I move the mouse?

Answer»

This happens will using Windows 7 64 bit on a Del GX520.

I will be watching Netflix and I forget to move the mouse EVERY twenty mins.
Is there a easy way to tell the screen saver not to run while a video is running?
Should I get a motion detector and attach it to my body? There are programs out there to move the mouse a few tics in x,y to keep screensaver from kicking in. I'd try one of those. I used a program like this many years ago to avoid getting disconnected from AOL during downloads. Nothing more frustrating than DOWNLOADING FreeDOS on a 33.6k connection and getting disconnected at the 4kb/s transfer 3 hours into it and having to start over because I walked away from COMPUTER. It worked well to not have the mouse zipping across the screen and just moving the position to reset the AOL inactivity timer to keep my connection.A Google did not find me the program. All I got was a hardware absolution from hackaday.com web site.

That looks alot simpler to build than just dis-abling the screensaver...http://lifehacker.com/5608374/mouse-jiggler-keeps-your-computer-awake-for-video-watching-reading

Here is a similar SOLUTION to the program that use to keep me connected with AOL, which also can fix your Netflix Screensaver issue if you want to keep your screen saver and INSTEAD enable/disable this mouse jiggler program.

only default google page in browser DOESNT not works. i download firefox again and install but got same problem . win 7 32 bit i useIf default is SPECIFIED as www.google.com it should go there, if the default is set to just google.com or google it will likely not get there. Is the default set to www.google.com ?On my default FF it is:
https://www.google.com/Sounds like your infected...visit our Malware section and follow the guide and have them take a looksee...It might also be good to update your firefox. Or just try to reinstall your current version of it and see what happens. It may be as SIMPLE as he is not connected to a network on his pc so he would still be able to view the firefox defualt page, ? Well since he's been abducted by Aliens it's silly to speculate any further...

Hello everyone. You know when you are on a web page there are those ad's off to the side? Well this ad said "2 PEOPLE have unfriended you on Facebook" That was correct..(can't imagine why..right) Anyway it happened again, except this time it said "2 people are spying on you" Kaspersky scan was o.k...Windows defender scan clean.Has anybody seen this? Could my a/v be missing something?Doesn't sound right.
Here is a search I did on the CH forum
pop up blocker...
If that does not HELP, you may want to post again on the Virus Forum here.
Post a screenshot of the spy message...Your web browsing is being tracked. Google does it, Yahoo does it, Facebook does it; they all do it.
You have see how the ads seem to be directed at you? That's how the websites make their money.
Look for anti-tracking software.I recomend using add blocker plus; the plugin for ire Fox and chrome it blocks all those annoying add and it also blocks add on youtube ^_^, i also have no script running on firefox so it wont run flash or JAVA aplication unless i unblock the script, and i have not had annoying adds at the side of my web pages These ads are nothing to WORRY about. While it's true that they do use quite fancy statistics to show seemingly relevant ads, they are really just nonsense trying to get you to sign up for something or download a dodgy piece of software. It's just like the ones that say "We have checked your PC and it can be optimised, Download Registry Cleaner Pro". The fact that the people unfriended you at the same time is purely a coincidence, there is no way that the ad can actually get this info.

You may want to look into ad blocking software to remove these ads.

Personally, I don't have a problem with websites tracking me to provide a more personal experience, I like the way my search results are relevant to my interests. Then again, I work in Analytics so I would be a bit BIASED.

Solve : X Windows display from Unix?

Answer»

Hello Folks,

Have X-Win 32 installed on my desktop.

With WINDOWS XP, following commands on unix system work like charm.
export DISPLAY=:0.0
xterm (opens an xterm session).

But they don't work on Windows 7 desktop.
Setting the display & triggering xterm doesn't work. It error's out saying:
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

Is there anything specific that needs to be done for Windows 7.
Advice please.From the X-Win32 wiki:

That usually means either you haven't started X-Win 32 or you are trying to open a Teer machine and did not check the Enable X-11 forwarding box in PuTTY
X-Win 32 is installed.

Don't MUCH insights into the second half.

While i google it, please let me know if you are AWARE what above requires.Gotcha
I need to enable X11 forwarding in Putty.
Mine was old & didn't support that.
Got a new one & things started working good.

My only GUESS might be related to changes starting in Vista that made the Windows desktop composited, rather than a single 2-D bitmap. Thanks

Solve : How do i send an HTTP command from batch file???

Answer»

I want to create a BATCH file that will issue an http command to my IP camera to take a photo. When I enter the FOLLOWING in chrome or IE it works to capture like i want:
http://192.168.0.171/axis-cgi/io/virtualinput.cgi?action=6:/1000\

How can I PUT this in a windows batch file?! I do not need a response from the command, just to SEND the into to the address listed...

Thanks in advance for your help!!Try wget.exe with the url

like this

wget http://192.168.0.171/axis-cgi/io/virtualinput.cgi?action=6:/1000\

http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/wget.htm

Better link for wget

http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/cgi-bin/fetch.pl?dl=wget/wget.exe

Thank you!!! Wget turned out to work for me but by taking a different approach. At first I wanted to "send" the http "command" to my axis camera which i had programmed to SAVE a snapshot to a specified location upon receiving the command. While wget did not send the http command like I thought it would I did use Wget to instead download an image from the camera web interface.

i can now use: wget http://192.168.2.22/axis-cgi/jpg/image.cgi?
to automatically download the live image to my hard drive.

Trying to use xml.http post or get commands did not get me anywhere either... was probably using wrong. As I was not trying to post anything to the URL or Get anything back, just send the cgi command, i think it was the wrong approach.

Thanks for your help!!

Solve : batch file to create IE shortcuts or updated properties.?

Answer»

Hello,
Windows 7 (64 bit) and IE 8 question.
I would like to CREATE a batch file that would MOVE update shortcuts or links on the desktop. I was able to successfully update the homepage using a batch file but if I could updated shortcut links that would be great. Or, now that I think about it, maybe I could create the shortcuts, put them in a directory and write a batch file to delete the shortcuts on the desktop and then move over the shortcuts in the directory to the desktop.
Also, is there a way to RUN the batch file as and ADMIN without right clicking the file?
Thanks for your help in advance...

That is a frequent question here on CH. Many here will not answer that because of a policy the CH has about programs that operate in the sleuth mode.

You may send me a PM and explain why you need it and I will PROVIDE l you a list of links that talk about STEALTH mode DOS commands.

Solve : Trying to factory restore Gateway Nela0 with windows 7?

Answer»

Hi, first time poster looking for some troubleshooting help. I'll try to keep this quick and give you as much information as I can.

The story was a few months ago, my sister's Gateway Nela0 wouldn't open any programs. Windows would boot perfectly and as soon as the desktop would pop up, it would not let you run any programs. After a few hours of troubleshooting, I eventually rebooted into safe mode with networking, downloaded malwarebytes, ran a quick and full scan and found a few programs running that shouldn't have. (It's been a while. I can't remember what they were, but I had googled them at the time and their descriptions seemed to describe what it was doing to the computer). I removed those programs, but the computer still behaved the same WAY. I did another scan on malwarebytes and it couldn't find ANYTHING. So now I'm wondering if it's something within windows that got corrupted. I tried to do a restore point to about a month before that and nothing happened. Anyways, after all that, my sister decided to get a chromebook and move on from this.

Now it brings me to today. Recently I've run into some free time and I'm trying to fix this thing. Since my sister has given up hope on it, she's told me to do whatever I WANT with it, hence why I would like to attempt to do a factory restore and see if I can bring this thing back to life.

I've tried doing the factory restore a myriad of ways. I can't get the gateway recovery manager to load from the desktop. If I go into the boot screen before windows starts up (alt + F10) I get a page that doesn't allow me to do anything (unless there is something I should type in here).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[emailprotected]/8914250884/

I've gone through pressing F8 on boot up, selecting "repair your computer", go through all the system recovery options until i get to this screen.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[emailprotected]/8914250530/

I've tried every option on there and nothing works. The kicker too is when I follow this procedure on Gateway's support page (see LINK, step 8. I'm also aware that it says "Vista" in the link but it's what popped up when I put in Windows 7):

https://support.gateway.com/s/software/microsof/vista/7515418/7515418su531.shtml

, they say there should be another option below command prompt that says "recovery manager." (Anyone know if this feature still exists in 7?)

Anyways, I feel like I'm going nowhere fast with this and I'm wondering if there are any other options available or if there is something I missed. The machine physically SEEMS to be running fine. It has an intel i3 processor, speakers work, keypad is responsive, cd drive opens and closes. It works perfectly except that it won't run any programs. I'll click chrome for example, it'll look like it's doing something and then just stop. I don't know too much of the specs since it wasn't my computer originally and I haven't been able to access that information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Are you sure it didn't have Win7 installed on it over a Vista install ? ?Came straight out of the box new with windows 7 installed. And as far as I know it hasn't been changed. Doesn't make sense that all recovery options were tried and didn't work...
Your next option would be to contact the Manuf. and order the Recovery DVD's...normally a nominal charge + shipping.
Keep us posted.

P.S. You may want to check if it's still under warranty...if so i'd return it for a replacement. It's no longer under warranty. I think it was purchased in October of 2010 and I checked earlier on gateway's website. I have the recovery disc we made when the computer was first purchased though.

I've never completely wiped a computer back to it's factory defaults before (since this computer is just sitting around as it is, I'm just trying to play around with it and make it work again. If I mess anything up it's no big loss).

Assuming, everything did work properly, am I at least on the right track as to how to restore it?

Just an update on what I've done.

I still haven't fixed it, but I was able to get a little further along. I had to go into the BIOS and enable the "F12 boot menu" option. I then selected the cd drive and inserted the recovery disc. It started to go into the automatic startup repair, but I cancelled that (I've already tried it a bunch of times to no success). When I hit cancel it brought me back to the "system recovery options" screen from before, but this time under where it says "command prompt" it now finally said "Recovery Manager." I clicked that and it brought me into the "Gateway Recovery Managment" menu (see link). My problem now is that it won't let me click the link to completely restore it back to factory defaults.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[emailprotected]/8918921346/

The only thing I can do is click exit. Then follow my suggestion above...
Somehow with all the tinkering the Factory Restore partition has gotten corrupted i suspect.

It's never a good idea to interrupt any of those functions once they have been initialised...no good can come of that. Thanks for the input. It's probably the best option.

Solve : restoring packard bell laptop from recovery disks but 2nd disk is corrupted?

Answer»

Hi

I had started to restore my laptop to it's factory settings using the THREE recovery disks that I had made. The first disk worked perfectly but the second did not (it keeps freezing near the end of the process)... I was not aware of the partition until it was too late but I can't use that now because the first disk has wiped everything from the HD (or can I??)... I hope you can help

Thanks

TIf you have the original Windows key (usually a sticker on the side or the back of the box) you can use a standard Windows disc to perform a clean install. Just make sure it is the same version ie. if you have a Windows 7 Home Premium key don't install Win 7 Pro (it won't accept the key). You will then need to go to the manufacturer's website to download the device drivers.Welcome to both of you.

Why? What happened that lead to you to restoring it? What make and model is it? Thanks for the REPLIES... it is a packard bell Easynote Tj74 windows 7..... The reason I'm doing a factory setting restore is because when I turn on the laptop it would allow me to enter a password and when windows started it would just freeze/lockup and would not allow me to do anything... so i (thought) was left with no option but to try and restore it to it's factory settings... I had made the disks when I bought the laptop approx 8 months ago...Check the Manuf. site for info on a Factory Restore from the hidden restore partition...

P.S. Whenever making restore CD's no matter what app is used you should always use the "verify image" tool...Quote
I was not aware of the partition until it was too late but I can't use that now because the first disk has wiped everything from the HD
If that's correct, meaning the restore partition has, indeed, been erased, contact Packard Bell about getting a system disc. You may need to pay a small fee but it will be much less expensive than buying Windows at retail. This doesn't sound accurate as no restore CD is SUPPOSED to wipe the Recovery partition...only the C: partition...by messing around with different combinations of buttons I held "ALT" and pressed "F10" a number of times on START up and this allowed me to access the hidden partition so it is currently being restored Thanks to everybody for there replies...I understood that tercou1 was using recovery discs but Windows 7 discs aren't that hard to come by (especially if you are running Windows 7 Home Premium), i would ask friends or family if anyone has one, if you can get your hands on one it's a relatively easy fix.Re-read the last Post...he's solved it.Uh oh... I think you need to either use a Windows CD (Anyways, are you using Vista or 7?) (What edition?) (What service pack?), buy a new pair of disks (the disk 2 will not come corrupted, also disk 1 and disk 3 will not come corrupted.), or buy a new Windows Vista/7 laptop with either Windows Vista SP2 of your version, or Windows 7 SP1 or higher of your version (SP1 is based on how much security you need, SP2 has medium security and SP3 has high security. Vista list: SP1 has no updates, SP2 has low-medium security, and SP3 has high security.) XP/2000/ME/98/98SE/95/NT/3.11/3.1 are in other forums. 3.1, 3.11, NT, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, and 2000 have bad security against viruses. (3.1 and 3.11 have no viruses written for them).See my Post directly above yours...

Solve : Does it mean the HDD needs to be replaced??

Answer»

Hi all,

My computer has a 500GB HDD running windows 7.
Recently, I found that the loading time of the windows 7 kept increasing from 2 minutes to 5 minutes, so I did a SIMPLE HDD check by right CLICKING My Computer and using the Error-checking in the Tool tab. The HDD checking was fast in the beginning but it became slowing down and even stopped after sshowing the message "624 files were checked...".

The PC loaded a black screen and was doing a disk check after rebooting the PC, it showed me some things like these:
72 large file records processed
0 bad files records
2 EA records processed
28 reparse records processed

I need some help.

Thank you for you time.

Solve : Cursor problems in Windows 7?

Answer»

I have a HP desktop about 2 years old with the Windows 7 operating system. All of a sudden the cursor arrow and hand have turned neon and the black line to indicate where you are typing in a white box has turned white and cannot be seen against the white background of the typing box. I have tried going into the CONTROL pannel/mouse/properties and checking defalt. I also have tried unclicking the Shadow box and the Allow thems to CHANGE arrows box. This has not HELPED. I am using the Standard Microsoft Aero Scheme. I should mention that once I statrt typing the black flashing line shows up, but it is white to show where I want to START typing. The neon arrow disappears when I cross the line into the box. Any help would be appreciated.Only time I have seen a similar issue was when a customer installed a free program to alter their mouse pointers. Has anything like this been installed or the system was fine one day and the NEXT day it was like this with no one installing anything? It seemed to be fine one day and this showed up the next. I could live with it if I have to, but it is annoying.Have you tried reverting system back to a restore point before this happened?

Solve : Missing files after deleted registry entries and system restore. Please help!?

Answer»

Hello, I have done one of the stupidest things in the world and have been trying all day to recover my files that went missing. Here's what happened:

I deleted a bunch of registry entries because Spybot S&D always showed these five things as threat level 5 and can't clean them. I decided to search the registry for the string of numbers and letters that S&D referred to and deleted all of the ones it would let me delete.

I also deleted all of the files and folders in the location Users/HomeAppData/Local/Temp except the one file it wouldn't let me delete.

When I came back to Windows nothing was working so I rebooted. When I rebooted all of my programs, files, everything was gone. I did a system restore to the most recent point which was from a week ago which turned everything back to normal except some very important files are missing from a folder on my desktop.

I am a musician and have been working on a recording which I save as I go as multiple versions ex. song 1.1, song 1.2, etc. All of the versions that were created after the available system restore date are gone. But it's weird because the bounces that I did (wav files not pro tools files) from the later versions are there, just not their pro tools session file counter parts.

I've restored all of the files/folders to Users/HomeAppData/Local/Temp however that didn't change anything.

The pro tools files that went missing are not hidden, I can't see them when I show hidden files. I've tried doing a system restore undo but I get an error message saying it can't do it.

Please help, I've been working on this song for a very long time and don't want to loose all of the hard work I've done.

Thanks,
Jeremyit's possible that your user profile could not be loaded properly. Check in C:\Users for a folder similar to your username but with a TMP or 1 or .OLD EXTENSION. For example, my user profile may be C:\Users\Calum but if it got corrupted, my profile may be C:\Users\Calum.TMP or C:\Users\TMP. You may be logged on using either the old profile or the new one, so if there are two or more SIMILARLY named profiles, check them all.
It seems very unlikely that your programs could have simply gone, perhaps it's just the shortcuts which are missing? Deleting a few registry keys should not have uninstalled your programs and deleted the whole user account, that's why I suspect it may just be a corrupted profile. Have a look around under C:\Users and see what you find.Hi Calum,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I agree it seems like some kind of profile mishap. I checked the users folder and there is a similar user (mine is called home, and there is one called home.home-PC), but there is no desktop folder inside and the missing files were in a folder on the desktop. When I try to click on the pictures folder in Documents it sais "location is not available". I did a deep scan with Recuva and no luck. Any ideas?Definitely does SOUND like a profile issue then. Unfortunately if the folder is missing and Recuva can't find anything, I don't think you'll have too much luck outside of professional data recovery. One other program you could try, which can be run from a bootable disk, is Photorec/Testdisk. I've found it to be pretty much on par with Recuva for recovering accidentally deleted files, but it might be worth a shot.

Solve : BIOS problem ( I think)?

Hi all,

SO I know when I turn on my PC and the processor fan goes on but nothing appears on the screen (compeltely blank) , this means there is a problem with BIOS, isn't that right ? That what happened with me, I checked the power supply voltages and they are OK, I changed the BIOS battery but no use ... so can somebody advise me with the problem please ? Kindly find below my PC specs :

HW : 3.4GHz, pentium D,4 MB cache, 2 GB RAM , 750 GB HD ... since 2006
OS : windows XP

ThanksIt has nothing to do with the bios. It is probably a bad display or a bad video adapter (or video cable or loose connection to or from the display).

1) What is new or different since the last time everything WORKED properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
2) Have you tried a different display? If not please do.I forgot to say that I tried the display on a laptop and it's working, that's why I didnt suspect itQuote from: Allan on May 25, 2013, 02:58:44 PM

Who told you that?
The startup screen works when about 97% of the computer is functional. Any failure of a major component stops the start up sequence. As for the hard drive, it has to gave the BIOS a message if it is not doing well. But if it is really wasted, the system stalls.
A memory chip that is dislodged, but not all the way out the socket, will short the memory data and address lines, gibing the CPU nonsense code. In some case the BIOS can detect memory failure and give a message with beeps, but not on the screen.

There are a long list of things that can happen if the box was dropped. The mounts for the motherboard can break loose. They are not indestructible.

Inspect everything.

Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.

The DVD drive needs to have poswr to open the tray. It would seem taht the PSU is not giving all the voltages retried. Take your VOM and check the PUS voltages at on of the drive connectors. Black is common, red if +5 and yellow is +12 and should be within 3 %and 5% of nominal.

From 4.85 to 5.15 on the 5 volt line.
From 11.4 to 12.6 on the 12 volt line.

LOL - sorry - right you are. Anything else beside the dvd drive and the black screen? At this point I have to guess EITHER the power supply, display adapter (do you have another you can try?), a bad cable (it's possible) or something more serious (motherboard, etc).

In addition to this are you sure the wifi is turned on on the computer, some computers have a wifi switch or its a HOT key fn+ another key to enable/disable wifi.Yes i tried both of those neither worked.
What encryption method is being used on the router? If it's WPA2, TRY dropping it to WPA, or WPA/WPA2 mixed mode. Some wireless cards have problems connecting to networks protected by certain types of encryption. It's also worth trying both TKIP and AES encryption for both WPA2 and WPA, see if that makes a DIFFERENCE.I only get 2 options TKIP and AES I tried both niether makes a difference but i can connect to the network now but it shows up as Unidentified Network
Nevermind it wont even connect anymore
On your desktop in the device manager what does it say for your wireless card? Mine SAYS Broadcom 802.11g wireless adapter.
And what is your router model?

Solve : Unable to run Robocopy?

Answer»

I have a computer that is running Vista HP on its original C\: drive, that has a maintainance program that was preinstalled on my pc. I also purchased Vista Ultimate (retail version), that is installed as a dual boot. I originally ran HP for the business, running a program that used Sql Server, but it became corrupted, and was unable to be fixed, so I abandoned the drive with HP (C:\) and only use the drive with Ultimate (M:\) on it.
I realize you cannot simply copy a program from one drive to another, because it will not result in an installed program. I am hoping that ROBOCOPY will be my answer. I tried the following steps:
I created a folder on my M:\ drive, the drive I now use, with the same program name as the original program on C:\. I then tried to run a command prompt script, with Administrative priviledges.
ROBOCOPY C:\Program Files\[program name] M:\Program Files\[program name]
Each time I run it, I get an ERROR message:
Robocopy is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I realize I may have been ABLE to add several switches to the script, but for some reason, my computer doesn't even WANT to recognize the Robocopy command.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks
Daveopen a command prompt and type

echo %path%

and then post here (by copy and paste) what the response is.Robocopy.exe is located in the folder C:\windows\system32\ and your PATH system variable needs to include that folder. If it does not then it may have been mangled. Also your dual boot setup may be INTERFERING with things. If you have an HP system restore CD you may be able to restore the maintenance program, whatever it is.

You cannot simply copy a program from one drive to another, and, in general, you can't Robocopy a program either. Robocopy is just a smarter front end to the Windows file copying functionality.

Solve : Constant writing to hardrive?

Answer»

I have Windows 7, and I am posting the specs here. The problem I am having is that there is a red light constantly going, which indicates that something is writing to the hard drive. Also, the computer appears unable to go into sleep mode. I am about to try a complete re-install, but would first like to see if there is something else I could do. Help would be greatly appreciated!

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]1) Open task manager to the processes tab. Sort on the cpu column. Which process is using the cycles?
2) Check Scheduled tasks to see if something is scheduled to run in the background.
3) Check your av & defrag apps to see if they are set to run on a regular basis.
4) Does the same thing happen in safe mode?Hi, that was a friend posting about my computer; I will be taking over from here. I was ready to reinstall but my friend said, "Hey, let's give this site a try, " so here I am.

1) Open task manager to the processes tab. Sort on the cpu column. Which process is using the cycles?

The weird thing is is that it doesn't start writing until the monitor goes to sleep. I did just have a problem with Google Earth doing the writing but I have resolved this, at least the writing going to "C:\Users\Johnehm\AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth\unified_cache_leveldb_leveldb2" (Around 1 gig of space - whew!)

2) Check Scheduled tasks to see if something is scheduled to run in the background.

I have 48 scheduled as "Active Tasks" in the Task Scheduler and according to the upper part of the same window none have been active in the last 30 days. How do you tell if something is supposed to run in the background or not?

3) Check your av & defrag apps to see if they are set to run on a regular basis.

Defrag every Wed at 1 am but it hasn't.
Various Comodo with multiple triggers except Cache Builder - when computer is idle.

4) Does the same thing happen in safe mode?

No, but there was only the option of my monitor going to sleep (and it didn't - set for 5 min). There were advance options but I didn't know what to choose from.

Let me also give you a little more background. The computer is a build by some local shop and it's always acted a little weird. I don't currently (pun intended) have it surge protected. About a month ago there were a couple of surges and it has been acting weirder: I have Ubuntu installed alongside. The grub file hasn't appeared in some time (when installing w7-32 from w7-64 - It behaved better with 32 bit.) when booting and after the surges it just suddenly reappeared. When new, their appeared, while booting, an option "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" that I also haven't seen in a long time but just reappeared today - I was toggling via BIOS to boot from either and Voila, there it was again.

Maybe the BIOS is damaged too? Time to flash? Reinstall Windows?
Oops, make that 100 gigs of space with Google Earth.Well you can't "damage" the bios - but if you want to flash it just to update it that's fine. And if the hd doesn't show activity until the monitor "goes to sleep" then it's probably something set to run when the system is idle. Could be av, search indexing, etc.Win7-32 or Win7-64?
2GB RAM is about minimum & could explain the excessive hard disk activity.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirementsI guess I’m a little on hyper-alert since the Google Earth issue as that was causing writing while the computer was in use even when I didn’t have GE open. I’ve been observing it a little more and it doesn’t seen to be as bad as I thought since. When I first posted, my computer had written around 500 Mb OVERNIGHT to my C: drive but not as much since. I used Crap Cleaner to see where the “crap” was and found this:

Google Earth 35 Mb
Temp files 217 Mb
Memory dumps 255 Mb
Firefox cache 98 Mb

I cleaned it up and the writing doesn’t seem to be as severe now, if that makes sense.

As for the sleep mode: I usually have 4 HDs going (all but C: usually asleep until called upon). I disconnected all but C: yesterday and the computer went to sleep as it should have. I reconnected all HDs and then even the monitor wouldn’t sleep.

Memory: I’m running W7-32 bit and usually have only FF, Windows Explorer, two instances of Agent, and frequently a simple game like Freecell running most of the time. That TAKES my memory usage to about 1G. I sometimes open Photoshop 7 with a couple of images and that bumps it up to around 1.5. It doesn’t seem to start up the writing. I’ve had units in the past where I definitely have overextended the memory capacity so I know what that’s like. I once had a 120 Mhz system that came with 16 Mb (EDO)ram. It also had a very noisy HD so I could really hear it using the swap file. When I upgraded to 32 Mb it was a LOT quieter.

Thanks for the input. It’s opened me up to more methods of observation than I would have come up with on my own I guess. And that’s what I’m going to do - more observation - before I do the reinstall. I really wouldn’t mind doing that though, as I have done it many times in the past, I’m not very trusting of Windows in TERMS of holes in the dike and tend to use a reinstall as a way of fixing the holes that develop over time. But it does help to learn more about it too!I'd suggest DLoading and installing Startup CPL from Mike Lin...and get your startup apps under control.
It's not uncommon for Google apps to do whatever they want on your PC.Startup CPL: Thanks, I'll look into it. FWIW, I use DuckDuckGo as a search engine but still use Google Earth (great app in some ways) and gmail. Gotta kick those HABITS.It's not neccessarily habits...it's the fact that an app can choose to run in the background without the User's choice.Habits: I was talking about kicking Google out of my life. And is Startup CPL good for W7-32 also? His website states that it's for XP and Vista.Yes...
It's small and completely unobtrusive...
I've known the Author Mike Lin for a long time.
It will place an item in your Control Panel called Startup...from where you can run it.

P.S. Don't turn anything off if your not familiar with it...check in here 1st if any questions.

Forgot to add on the hot fix link I was sent by Microsoft I got an error code TRY this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168124
To drag the icon which is found before the url address, MINIMIZE the browser then open the folder (minimize also) to your current or use another folder just in case. Hey, Thanks for the reply.

I have Norton, I have it on automatic, so today/yesterday. I did a Full-System scan when I first discovered this problem and when the Services.msc, System Restore, System Image routes all were unsuccessfulIf services.msc didn't work then you are indeed INFECTED...Norton's or not.
DLoad update and run MalwareBytes Free ver...don't interrupt it let it fix any it finds and re-boot.
If still the same visit our Malware section.

Solve : Blue Screen Issues?

Answer»

So for a while now I've been having some issues with my computer crashing quite frequently. It only seems to do this when I'm using a web browser or a media player. I've also NOTICED that after restarting the computer the memok light flashes red briefly. I really have no idea what the issue is so even just pointing me in the right direction would be helpful. If there's any information you need just post and I'll try my best to answer. Have you RUN memtest86 on this system? The quick red flash and back to green is probably part of the initialization/test sequence in which for a narrow timeframe the system is testing the memory and it shows red until approved as OK, but it couldnt hurt to run a MEMTEST for 5 or 6 complete loops of testing to rule this out as the cause.

What Make/Model is this computer and is it running Vista or 7?

The only systems I have seen with diagnostic LEDS showing RAM (Memok) are higher end SERVERS that show a red/green LED for each memory bank, or some older DELL and IBM towers that use to have diagnostic LEDS viewable from the rear of the computer where the I/O cables plug in which were helpful for troubleshooting some issues.Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replySorry to say but I have no idea what the make and model is. I checked with msinfo32 but it doesn't give me any info under system model or manufacturer. I am running windows 7 and I was able to get the blue screen information. Sorry that I can't be more HELP, but thank you for the quick response. I'll see about getting that memtest running.

Solve : Cannot log in?

Answer»

I have a windows 7 computer, it had been working alright, although i do lots of changes to it while playing around with system files(bad idea, i wanted to change some files in system32). Yesterday, i GOT on to my pc, and the users came up. i selcted my user, and typed in the password. Windows 7 says:Welcome. Normally as you know it takes about 15 SEC for it to load and the 'welcome' things CLOSES and you log in, but i waited HALF an hour, and it was still loading. i tried startup repair using the f8 button, but it cannot detect anything. please help.
thx
Why did you "want to change some files in system32"? Which files? Why were you "playing around" with system files? Prior to fooling about in the innards, it is a good idea to make a complete system backup. Did you do this?
A window poped up saying that error occured because of a file in system32, so thats why i went in and changed it(rather recklessly). but luckily i have got a full backup of my pc. so now what i need is to fix the problem in any way, even if my data will be wiped out because i got my backup.
thankyou.wit was sisriv.dll
You "changed" it? How? What did you do? Is this the exact spelling? "sisriv.dll"

Solve : Minimum/maximum processor state keeps setting itself to 100%?

Answer»

On my laptop I noticed it'd get pretty hot when gaming and I'd start to get stuttering or freezing in games so I changed it so my maximum processor state would be 90% instead of 100% so that I could REDUCE my laptop heat. That worked, but often my computer resets the minimum and maximum processor states to 100% randomly and then I have to go in and manually make them 0/90 or 5/90. I don't have ati catalyst center which I HEARD causes this sometimes. What else could be causing the reset?Do you have any "energy saving" software installed? PROGRAMS like Gigabyte's Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) are known to cause this as the settings in that conflict with those SET in Windows. I don't KNOW what laptop you have but some come with similar software installed, so that would be my first port of call.

Solve : "This program cannot display the webpage"?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7, and I was in the middle of working when the message "This program cannot display the webpage" on a white background filled my SCREEN. I can't close it, the keys don't work (though the mouse moves), I can't exit the screen (even by HITTING escape), and when I try ctrl-alt-delete, I don't have the task manager listed. All I can do is switch users or shut down. I tried shutting down and rebooting, and it keeps happening. I even tried shutting down and restarting in safe mode (by hitting F8 as it was booting up) and it's still happening! I saw someone else POST about this, but apparently they were able to get into their COMPUTER in Safe Mode, whereas I cannot.
Help please!Quote

when I try ctrl-alt-delete, I don't have the task manager listed.

This is USUALLY indicative of Malware or Virus present that is trying to keep you out of the Task Manager Feature. If you are able to get to the start run and type taskmgr, then enter to run this command and it still does not come up, your looking at having to disinfect. If you answer this as the problem, this can be redirected to Malware/Virus forum by a moderator.I can't get to the Start buttonOK...I tried starting from Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and typed in tskmgr, and was told it was has been disabled by the administrator

Solve : Black screen at login?

Answer»

I had the same problem...I cleaned the registry using ccleaner and Iobit advances systemcare 5(this did the most I think) and it was fixed, the black screen probably comes from a file that went missing and your computer is searching for it during the black screen, try cleaning the registry with the 2 programs I suggested.verystrengt -
Thanks for your reply. However I am afraid to mess with the registry so I will just put up with the 1 1/2 minute delay.
BobAllan -
Help me with this. Verystrengt suggests that the random black screen is caused by "comes from a file that went missing and your computer is searching for it during the black screen". It seems to me that if I was missing a file the black screen would SHOW every time, but it does not. He suggests cleaning the registry. I have been told by many "never touch the registry". His suggested program costs $20 which isn't much money but some programs make errors so they can fix them and tell how great they are. Is this program safe to use? Thanks for help. If you keep a recent Avast installer in your hard drive, try removing the software using an avast uninstaller/remover or by ADD or remove program. Reinstall Avast if no changes were made.Try also updating/reinstalling VIDEO driver or lowering resolution a notch and reboot to check on the difference. If you want to continue troubleshooting, please boot to safe mode and see if the problem exists there or if it is a normal boot.Allan -

Thank you both for suggestions. I will try them but since it is a random problem I don't think it will do much good to persue it farther. If it gets worse or happens every time I login, then I will ask for help again. BobIt sounds to me there may be some registry corruption. it also seems that it may be limited to your one user account. try creating a new user account from control panel, restart your computer and login to the new account. see if that helps. if it does try deleting the affected account after backing up what you need.Gray1989 -
It appears that you are right about the way to solve my problem. I'm not too sure what I did but I set up another account and so far there is no black page. However, because the black screen occurs randomly I will use the new account for a day or two and let you KNOW the results. The new account is using Internet explorer 8. I have been using Internet Explorer 7. I would prefer using IE 7 because I have written each and every step to use the web pages I have. This is so my wife can use the computer. She is not very good with a computer but she can follow directions. Is it possible to delete IE 8 and go back to IE 7? Thanks for your help. More later. BobGray1989 -
As I said , setting up another account got rid of the black screen. I deleted the other account as I did not have a use for it and when I did the black screen came back. I sat up an extra account again and the black screen has not appeared since. I don't have any idea why it works this way but if it isn't broke don't fix it. Thanks for your help. Solve : WIN MEDIA PLAYER?

Answer»

It's checked now Patio. I just went through that process that Geek mentioned here. Nothing has improved however mate. Did you re-boot and try it ? ?Yes I did my friend. GLOOPS,
You have gone through a lot to resolve this issue.

As for me, at this POINT I would go for the backwards method. That is where you start with what you know works and tried to ruin it step-by-step.

I would find an old hard drive in my junk box an put it into the new machine and install windows 7 onto it. Then check to see if Windows Media player works. At that point its will be clear that:
A. If it works there is a odd software issue on the older install.
B. If it does not work it must be hardware or driver issue.

That is the best I can offer..

Well Geek lad, I am sorry to lose my Media Player, I just thought that youse guys might have solved this problem is all. If you follow my posts this last year I have had a LOT of 'finicky' problems, some have been solved ...some haven't . The worst problem for me, was losing contact with my external drives. That was a bugger!

I can live without Media Player until next time around ...(if there is one). So far everything else is humming along with mi new setup, (if I don't speak too soon) LOL! So I am loath to shake THINGS here.

I have thought us a new stratagem for me from now on, which should alleviate most of my problems in the future I HOPE! So I will SAIL away here guys and count mi blessings.

Don't go away though, as ...knowing my luck, I SHALL need this port again mates! Good look to yer all and fair weather to ye! Ye be dooin a great job up here mates.

The Repair Install is nothing to be intimidated by...
I was just giving fair warning for the worst case scenario...that's all.
If you follow my suggestions and the guide step by step it'll be fine...
Just SAYIN.

Solve : Ethernet adapter not recognizing cable?

Answer»

I have had a Ethernet CABLE running directly from my Motorola SBG6580 router/modem combo for a few months. Yesterday, my computer would not recognize that the Ethernet cable was plugged in. I did various research and tried a few things. I switched out Ethernet cords, tried multiple spots on the modem, updated the BIOS for my motherboard, took the battery out of the motherboard and reset the BIOS that way, I uninstalled the network adapter, then rebooted the computer and re installed it.

The LED lights on the modem are all lit, and it functions wirelessly. The LED light on the rear of the LAN connection on the computer is not lit. The computer recognizes Intel(R) PRO/1000 PM Network Connection and stated it is working properly. The LAN port is directly on the motherboard.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Gateway FX530S.

I tried to plug an ethernet cord into another device, but it too went unrecognized, leading me to believe it the the modem. I factory reset the modem and the problem persists. I really don't know where else to take this.

Please helpQuote

If this router/modem is leased, you can get a replacement through your ISP. If you own it, you will have to buy a new one.

I lost a router in a similar way, but it wasnt a router/modem combo. I had a Netgear that died in which none of the devices connected to it would uplink even after reset of power as well as reset of the router back to factory. The one thing I did notice though is that the LEDs were not as bright as they use to be, and the router was very warm to the touch. In addition to this, the power adapter for the router was also warmer than it should have been. I replaced it and problem solved!

The good thing though is that I had a spare router on hand to switch back to the 10 year old Linksys which didnt have wireless and still had settings for Vonage and port forwarding etc, so I was able to just set this up for a week until I could get my replacement for $20, a D-Link wireless router from NEWEGG. I placed my 10 year old Linksys back in the box in the CLOSET in case I need to use it as an emergency router ever again.

We had a bad power outage prior to mine dying. I had it accidentally plugged into unprotected power. We had the lights go dim, then bright and then out and then back on for a second and out and it did that about 2 times and then finally out for 30 minutes of no power. When power came back on, the router didnt make it through the abuse without power protection. Everything else powered through power strips with surge protection and battery backups were fine. This was plugged into an older power strip that didnt have surge protection that my lamp was also plugged into and of which the florescent bulbs ballast was blown. Threw away that power strip and paid $7 for one with surge protection!

Have you had bad weather lightning etc or power outage etc that might be linked to this problem? How many Ethernet ports does the modem nave?
The port may have been damaged by something you did not do. For example, you did not use a grounded electrical cord or outlet.
If so, it is permanent damage that can not be fixed in software.
Before you buy another modem, check the electrical wiring. In a few cases a user will use a two prong electrical cord. or two wire outlet. Most modems and computers require three wire electrical pugs. Failure to use grounded equipment with Ethernet can damage ports.

I am not making that up as I go. It is well documented and is in the beginner's course on Ethernet equipment.

Not just USA, also in Europe.
http://www.datapro.net/products/computer-power-cord-europe.html

Failure to have a good ground can damage electronic equipment. The problem is more widespread that many users would suspect. Notice these comments.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26596653-Ungrounded-PC

But your modem may have been damaged by something else, e a power surge. Like what was mentioned in the post above.

*Most inexpensive home use Routers/Modems/Switches etc, have no ground wire leading up to the device. The ground is internal to the power supply that feeds the DC or AC via 2 wires to the device at the other end. Its not until you look at the high end rack mount switches, routers, etc that you will find the common 3 prong grounded computer power plug with internal power supplies contained within the devices.

Most household network hardware is not grounded by design when powered off of an external power supply. However, Netgear does supply a ground rung to the outside of the metal bodied switches for the 5 and 8 ports. The ones that come in a plastic clam shell body are meant to be non-grounded throw aways! While if you spend a little more for one of the metal bodied Netgears you can ground them, although they dont supply any wire to do it with and most people dont ground them unless its in an industrial environment etc. I have used them for YEARS ungrounded without problems for small business and home networks. And they are protected behind battery backups etc from surge, with exception to the router oops I had.. LOL

*Its always best to have everything on the same potential. Back when I use to work on Industrial Automation PLC's etc for Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley, you needed the machinery to be grounded together, otherwise if the ground was missing the shield that was used on the DB9 serial cables would become the grounded link between the equipment and the outer body of the DB9's would get pitted and eaten away in addition to other problems when the difference became great enough between two machines to arc and blow ports out frying the Max232 RS232 UART chips etc.Quote

Not even an issue o cost. I have a nice Net gear router with no ground. But my stock AT&T router has a ground. I live in Florida and all of my equipment is plugged into a surge protector. Besides we haven't had any storms/power failures in the last week, well before the problems occurred.

The router has four network ports, all are lit, but the device is hot to the touch.

I have had good luck with Motorola Surfboards in the past, so I bought this one myself; it is not leased from my ISP.
You have to setup the connestion for the wired to be recognised.Well, after calling customer support Motorola, they advised that the problem is probably with the chipset for the Ethernet ports, and that i'm on my own.

Can anyone recommend another brand modem/router combo? I've been really happy with what I have and am very disappointing by this product. A network adapter is cheaper than a new modem.
Windows has limited ability to diagnose hardware issues. Standford textbooks recommend substitution rather that software to identify hardware failures.

Of course, paraprofessional IT people have some gadgets that will pinpoint a problem. But one even a simple one costs way more than a new network interface controller (NIC).

Have you tried another NIC?Quote

Regarding their statement above of 2 devices having the same issue. That is why I dont believe it to be a bad NIC in the PC.

One suggestion to try which would work is if you have a friend locally who can bring their modem/router to your home. Connect theirs in place of your own, and see if you get connectivity back. Low cost ( only the cost of gas ) test solution that would work to troubleshoot. *Make sure they bring their own external power supply to pair up with the modem/router as well so its all known good hardware. The MAC address for the modem registered with the ISP would initialize and grab an IP from ISP their(your friends) paid active acct from your location and if its your modem/router combo you would know right off if this is the problem or not. Assuming this is Cable Broadband.

Other devices that can be used to test a NIC other than Modem or Router are: an old Cat5 (RJ45) HUB, an old or new Cat5 (RJ45) SWITCH, a RJ45 LOOPBACK plug to loop back the TX/RX on itself, or if you have a CROSS-OVER CABLE and 2 computers or Cat5 (RJ45) devices both powered up by which to plug this cross over cable with 2 live devices together with and look for uplink LED lit.Quote from: Serious_Sack on May 14, 2013, 07:07:52 PM

Solve : Muted Sound with No Apparent Cause, Resolves on Logoff/Restart?

Answer»

Specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium sp 1 64-bit
Intel i7-2600 @ 3.6 ghz
12 gig ram
Beats Audio

Problem:

RANDOMLY, the sound on my Windows 7 machine will go out. It hasn't occurred mid-song or video, but I will randomly find that the sound has stopped when I go to listen to something. I have checked to see if it was an issue with my headphones or speakers but that is not the case (they both work fine), and I have double checked to see whether anything is muted under the Windows sound OR Beats Audio and nothing, and no other sound file was playing that should have interrupted it or something of the sort.

I have not been able to discern ANY potential cause for this, and so far the only solution has been to logoff or restart. Upon logoff, the sound immediately returns (the Windows logoff sound pops up) and things are fine until the audio cuts out again.

What MIGHT be the cause of this? I am really stumped and I cannot think of any causal reason why the audio would go out. CONVERSELY, how might I just handle it?

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. You guys are the best here and that is why I'm coming back for more help from you folks. That is indeed strange...
Onboard sound...or addon card ? ?
Only thing i would think other than the chip itself would be a heat issue...The computer was running cool. I was just BROWSING the net normally. The last time I was playing a game, but the computer was running cool as a cucumber without a problem.

It's onboard sound.

As I said: As soon as I logoff, literally as soon, the sound comes back on. This leads me to suspect that some program is closing off the sound and I can't identify it.

It isn't like I log off, wait ten minutes, and log back in.

Thanks for your help as always.Well, to add to the problem:

I was just right now listening to a Youtube video while I copy/pasted some text into my e-mail. As I did so, the Youtube video audio cut out. It seemed to coincide oddly with pressing ctrl C? I have no idea why that would cause it, but at the very least that is what I was doing precisely when it happened.

I have no idea why this would cause anything. I am absolutely stumped.

Solve : Unable to Initiate System Restore Feature after Factory Restore?

Answer»

One of the primary reasons I had for performing a factory restore on a friend's Lenovo E5800 dual core, Win 7 HP desktop PC, is that the system restore function was broken, and apparently has been since the machine was purchased 2 or 3 years ago. After completing the factory reset, one of the first things I checked was system restore. Apparently, I found, SOMETHING happened during the initial factory SETUP which makes it IMPOSSIBLE for this feature to work.

Snip 01 (attached) shows that the C drive folder which the system looks for is missing. I renamed the "C" drive from no label to "OS," thinking this might help, but it did not. Snip 02 shows how I tried to configure the OS drive, and\or the C-folder-missing- drive, to initiate system restore. Snip 03 shows that the system reported that the drive had an incorrect label, and system restore could not be setup. Snip 04 is a snapshot of the management console, showing this desktop has a single system hard drive, divided into 3 partitions - a small Win 7 established partition, the OS, or system C Drive, and a 25 gb restore partition, which was used to accomplish the factory restore.

I hope that some participant of this FORUM has some idea how to correct this problem. I'm positively stumped. I suspect that I might copy the newly restored C partition to a different hard drive, and leave off the restore partition in an effort to see if that would work, but I don't want to give up the factory restore option forever.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]The SYNTAX error is happening because the C: volume has been renamed...
Remove the label you gave it and re-run the factory restore.
The reason system restore did not work is it was probably turned off...that or no restore point was created after the factory re-set.Patio:

Thanks for the reply - I was hoping you were still around. It's probably not very clear in my original post, but I tried to communicate the fact that I only renamed the C Drive after the restore, and after I had verified that I still had no ability to configure system restore. Of course, I renamed the drive thinking that might help - but it did not.

I have reinstalled about 125 windows updates, including SP1 for W7 HP 64 bit. It may be helpful to know that system restore is functioning, based on what must have been a default of 1% (1 gb) of the system drive. Right now, that translates into 5 restore points. But, as I'm sure you know, as time goes by, a single restore point can easily devour all that small amount of space. As it stands now, system restore works as it should, but configuration of the amount of space dedicated to system restore isn't possible.

Thanks again for your interest. I'm painfully aware that Microsoft will provide no assistance in an issue such as this, and I don't have a clue as to where else to look for the solution.Change settings for System Restore in Win 7...Patio:

Thanks for the link, but of course it only spells out how to do what I have already tried unsuccessfully to do on several occasions. I'll continue to search, and maybe Google will turn up something.

Solve : Windows 7 Freezing After Login?

Answer»

Hi,

I don't know if anyone can HELP. But my PC (Windows 7) KEEPS freezing after login. I tried in safe mode and it works FINE. So I disabled all the none Microsoft start up services but it still freezes when I login.

Any ideas what to do next?

Cheers,
JamieHave you installed or updated any drivers recently ? ?
Sounds like it's hanging on a bad/incorrect driver as safe mode uses the generic Windows drivers.Hi Patio,

Recently I probably have as I have just BOUGHT a new monitor and WIFI card.

What is the best course of action to see test if it is one of these drivers?

ThanksLook in Device Manager...any Yellow ??'s ?Just checked in safe mode can't see any yellow things or Ok I FOUND out what it is but I don't know how to fix it.

Its my Asus 802.11b/g wireless lan card causing the freezing, it its disabled everything is ok.

I clicked update driver to see if it needs updating but my computer does not seem to think it does.

Could this be bad hardware causing this?I would DLoad a fresh copy of the correct driver directly from ASUS...then uninstall it in Device Manager.
Upon re-boot re-install the driver and you should be good to go.

Solve : BSOD/Freezing HALACPI.DLL?

Answer»

I have a problem with my HP Pavillion a6250 t, I recently upgraded my RAM and it was working fine for a while but then it started getting blue screens and freezes during certain processes. I downloaded blue screen view and all of them were due to the halacpi.dll (Hardware abstraction) and I checked the RAM to see if it was installed incorrectly; it was not. As a test I PUT my old RAM back in to see if it was indeed the RAM but the same ISSUE occured, so I put the new RAM back in. So I thought it had to be software related, however I hadn't installed any new software. I ran Norton 360/Norton one, CCLEANER, Malwarebytes, and avast! and none of them found any viruses. So I thought it would have to be the drivers. So I tried to UPDATE the drivers using Driver max/ Slim drivers, however both cause my computer to freeze and crash. I tryed running them in Safe Mode but it would not allow me to update them in safe mode.

Please Help

PS. My computer has Guaranteed freezes/crashes when ever I try to open Itunes. Im not sure why . Another odd time it is a guaranteed crash is when I open abelton live, then open the VST plugin Massive in abelton. Now just opening massive is not an issue, I can adjust it anyway I see fit, but when I try to use a preset in massive it crashes .
It ALSO crashes when closing google chrome, opening it is fine but when closing it crashes.
Everything works fine in Safe mode.

Solve : I want to reinstall Windows 7?

Answer»

For now I'm going to treat this as a windows 7 question instead of a virus question.

A couple of weeks ago I uninstall my McAfee 2012 version and install the 2013. At the time I tried to get it to use the windows firewall instead of McAfee's. I couldn't really get it to do that and ended up with, I thought, McAfee firewall. With my messing around, I may have had no firewall at all.

A few days later I got my first real intrusion on my computer since I've been on the net in the early 90's. It locked my browser and said it wanted money. A LITTLE work, a virus scan, and things seemed normal. Before the scan I found SOMETHING CALLED 'Quinn Beset Fete Preen Lucy' in my startup items. The scan removed that and three trojans, and quarantined a few things.

Anyway to make this shorter, I then found that McAfee firewall wasn't working, and neither was windows firewall. I couldn't get either to work. Trying to set windows firewall to 'recommended settings' I would get error code 0x80070424, and the Advanced Security snap-in window had an error 0x6D9.

Thinking McAfee was interfering, I've uninstalled it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Still can't get windows firewall to work using info found on the net.

Realizing that I may still have a virus, but I may just have a messed up windows 7 installation, I would like to just reinstall windows 7 over my current installation to fix the firewall. If I understand this, I can just do an upgrade install.

Is this possible? Will it keep my settings, links to programs, and all that kind of stuff? If this doesn't work, I'll start working on this as a virus.

Thanks
HarryIf it is a bad virus, it will get into your programs and settings and into things you would not even imagine.
You may want to use a tool that scans your computer for a bookable CD. You need to have an Ethernet connection to the internet. Th CD will try get a virus update from a site and then run a full scan on your system.
One such is made by Alvira. There are others. Such a tool The do NOT require the OS to be working. It will will boot from a spacial Linux kernel.

I believe this is the safest thing you can do now. However, you may wish to post again in the virus section ans see what they say.
BTW, doth. thou have a backup?Repair Install of Win7...

If you still show signs of infection AFTERWARDS which is still possible visit our Malware section and follow the Guide for posting your logs....My harddrive has 4 partitions with one (G:) set aside for system IMAGE. I had set up the computer to make an image every once in a while, and delete the oldest image when full. Something didn't work right and the computer kept saying the drive was full. I did something to make it stop that. Even though my G: drive still shows it is nearly full, doing what I think is the correct procedure to restore an image, the computer says there is no image. So I don't know what's going on there. If there is an image, I would think it is very old, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I had seen stuff on the net about reinstalling windows 7 as an upgrade right over the previous installation. And it shouldn't cause any real problem. I looked on Microsoft Knowledge Base, but still wasn't sure I should do a reinstall. I did find the page 'Repair install of Windows 7' that Patio has pointed me to. Since no-one has jumped on me with 'DON'T DO THAT,' I'll go ahead and do the repair.

I'll let you know what happens. If this doesn't work, I'll look for other solutions including what Geek-9PM has pointed me to. And probably back here in the Malware section.

Thanks for the help.
HarryDid you not read the link above ? ?
It has detailed instructions for a Repair Install...Yes Patio, I saw the link, and that is the repair I'm going to do. Thanks again. You're Welcome...sorry i didn't see that in the Post above...
My posts can be kind of long and wordy. One has to read them closely to figure out what they say.

Anyway, I did the reinstall, and windows firewall is working. So far everything seems to be fine, but I haven't finished checking.

If I have any problems I may be back. Thanks for the help folks. Have to make a pot roast now.If you need any help with that ...let us know.
