Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 crash dumps have been found and ANALYZED. No offending third party drivers have been found. Consider configuring your system to produce a full memory dump for better analysis.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

I wana to eject cd/dvd if some one try to copy from the cd/dvd (batch file)

That would make the disk useless, since LEGITIMATE data reads would also trigger ejection.

Quote

Only have a CD/DVD-ROM drive on the computer or uninstall all optical disk WRITING software and lock down the machine with security policies. (Is this what you are really asking about?)

If you mean prevent execution of batch files, then again you need to set up proper security policies.

Solve : The Same Microsoft Update - Over and Over?

Answer»

Each and EVERY time I shut down my computer, I get the same message - DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, INSTALLING UPDATE 1 OF 1. It takes about 3 or 4 minutes and then the pc turns off. I accessed the update log and found that the FOLLOWING is downloaded every day, every time I shut off:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332) 55.8 MB

The little Microsoft fix it popup which appears can be run, but is of no help in stopping this reoccurring problem. It doesn't interfere with any operation of my pc, because it only occurs once I click the shutdown button.

I'm certain thus download is not meant to occur over and over and over and over.....

Anyone have any ideas how to make it stop?
Quote from: schuarta on April 21, 2013, 11:04:06 PM

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 4 (KB2463332) 55.8 MB

Since you have the actual update code, have you tried manually installing it, then rebooting?
You could also try what was suggested here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ocsmanagement/thread/f09f76a8-fe4c-4e39-aaa1-9000971283bf/Well, I've tried down LOADING it manually, and everything ELSE I can think of, and if I leave the downloads on automatic it still installs each and every time I hit my shutdown button.

So my solution is to use the manual download mode, and download other updates avoiding the SLQ Server 2005. I just watch the lower left CORNER of my screen for the notices that new updates are available from Microsoft.

You do not use a Windows CD for System Restore.

You can and should use the Windows DVD if possible because it allows you to make the changes from the outside of the OS. I find that using system restore from inside the OS can cause some unwanted problems like corrupting the user account that you RUN it from. I have done them probably 20 times from the disk and 15 from the OS. Just a thanks here fellas!Quote from: mathis.ws on December 07, 2012, 12:52:37 PM

There is no difference with either method for system restore as the same data is USED...from the WIN install.@patio, I agree that the files getting executed are the same, however when you run them from a user account on the on that same mounted partition that you are restoring it is fundamentally different than running the same operation from outside the OS while the partition is still un-mounted. Microsoft possibly could have done a better job with this if they made it more like chkdsk works where it flags the program to execute after the next REBOOT. The only reason I bothered to bring it up is because I have had the user account I ran the system restore from get corrupted several times... this is particularly annoying if you run it from the only admin account on the computer or the customers account. The files being used are on the Win partition...wether or not you run the executable from the CD or from Windows is IRRELEVANT.

Solve : MYSTERY???

Answer»

Hiya Fellas!

I run Windows 7 Home and I have a puzzlement. I have a number of USB external drives ...two of which are Western Digital. My red one I use to backup to, my blue one I use as a portable aplication storage. Suddenly, I cannot see the contents of these drives! My machine makes the conection sounds when I plug them in and If i go deep into my device management they are there to see, but they do not at all appear under 'My Computer' consiquently I cannot get to them or read them???

This has just recently happend for some reason?

Any ideas guys? Do they work in another computer?
Good Qusetion ST I will TRY out. I have just tried the drives at a mates computer and they work fine?

Are you using the front uSB ports on your PC when trying them ? ?...or a multi-port HUB ?I have two USB's at the front of my computer Patio which I normally use. As I say, I have had the drives working from here without problem in the past???Front ports are NOTORIOUSLY known for being under-powered...
I'd bet if you hook them up to another port it'll show fine.Sorry to have to report that using my rear USB ports has made no difference lads? Connect each one 1 at a time on the PC they showed on...
Open Disk Management...right clik the drive and select Properties.
Post back with a screenshot or all the info it reports.OK Patio will do but will take a little time mate. I will do it as quick as I can. thnx You said you can see them in Disc Management? If so, try changing the Drive letter and see if that fixes your problem. Can mark this as closed guys ...I have used the old 'Manchester Screwdriver' which has solved this problem Thnax again tho fellas!I have solved this prob with my TRUSTY 'Manchester Screwdriver' mates .......I do thank you for all the input tho. It has been put to me that not using the 'Hardware Release' tab on exit may not have helped here. I am using it now every time anyways.

Solve : Computer cannot read large files off so memory stick without crashing.?

Answer»

Hi,

I have recently built my own computer, with a i core 3 processor, 8gb of ram. And with windows 7 operating software.
However when i plug in a memory stick WHETHER straight into the MOTHERBOARD or the front. And i try to open a file larger than about 10mb the windows explorer crashes and says that the folder is empty.
The memory stick works fine in other computer.
I do not disconnect it when i take it out. But my computer can read it when i put it in and it comes up under device manager.
Any ideas?

ThanksI presume that it's a video file? If yes, see this link.Nope a pdf or word file also makes it crash.Quote from: Esta16 on May 05, 2013, 10:48:52 AM

I do not disconnect it when i take it out.
What does this mean? Do you mean you don't use the Safely Remove Hardware feature when you remove it? No i dont use the safety remove hardware. Why?I wouldn't think a .Pdf or Word file would be too large...
We're gonna need alot more info. What info do you need? If you tell me where to find it, I'll post it.

And i just have never used the safely remove hardware and never had an issues.Check the file sizes on the PC that opens them...i don't BELIEVE size is the issue here...
Also not using safely remove means that one day you will find that stick empty of all data...so you should use it.What would you like me to list?

And okay I SHALL start using that thanks

Solve : Unable to start up windows 7?

Answer»

I recommend downloading this:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

Included in the .iso (which can be opened using an unarchiving utility such as 7-Zip or WinRar), is a script to install the Boot CD ONTO a USB drive.

Once installed, you can boot from the USB drive and format the laptop's hard drive. This should clear the drive, allowing you to REINSTALL Windows.
I just downloaded UBC myself, and I cannot find the script that installs it to a FLASH drive.

The instructions, however, are located here:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/customize.html
(Scroll down to "Making UBCD memory stick")I followed the instructions given.
- CMD
- cd c:\ubcd-extracted\ubcd\tools\win32\ubcd2usb\
- ubcd2usb c: j:

C is the path i installed and extraced it J is the formated usb

-Press enter and gives me:

UBCD2USB: Making USB KEY bootable ...
UBCD2USB: Copying files to USB KEY ...

Solve : Behind task bar popup messages?

Answer»

For about a couple of weeks now just behind the right side of my task BAR I get pop up messages. The one showing now is Install java runtime environment (JRE) 7u137.0.130.20. Then it gives me different choices of when to install it -one hour, TWO hours, never, etc. I always chose never but it comes back anyway. This message also appears for avast and a few others which I do not recall now.

I have no idea why I am getting them. I check for viruses every other day and for malware every day and none is found.

Hopefully, one of y’all know. Thanks muchIf you don't want to update or receive any notification, go to CONTROL Panel - Programs - Java - Update tab and uncheck the BOX Check for updates automatically or go to Advanced tab to adjust notify settings. Do you mean to update the items that pop up like - java, avast and numerous others? They are all updated except for avast and it does not show as being installed but it is hiding somewhere as I cannot get rid of it. have tried avast uninstaller but does no good. it is shown in the downloads but cannot delete it, I send it to unlocker but get no CHOICE to delete.Quote

Go to Control Panel - Add or Remove Program the remove/uninstall Avast. Its possible that the 30 days registration period have passed. Avast remover http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility in case its not possible by Add or Remove Programs.

At any rate, let's check what security software is installed.

Solve : Microsoft office 2010?

Answer»

Hi guys and GALS,
Quick question IVE got Microsoft office 2010 and micrsoft 2010 starter pack INSTALLED on my PC. I have not bought the full version, is it safe to UNINSTALL the Microsoft office 2010 or does the starter pack need it to RUN?

Thanks Jabba69

Yes
To clarify , I believe reddevilggg meant it's safe to uninstall the regular version of Office 2010 without affecting the Starter version. In other words, Starter version does not need the regular version.

Solve : How to send mp3 files via email?

Answer»

I searched three times and have not found anything close to ANSWERING my QUESTION. When I right-click on an mp3 file in my music library I get a drop-down menu with options including "Send to...Mail Recipient" (among others); but when I click on Mail Recipient I get this error message:
"There is no email program associated to perform the requested ACTION. Please install an email program, or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

Obviously I do have email, so I opened Default Programs but I still can't figure out how to do what they SAY. I don't really understand what they want me to do. Can someone please help?

I am using Windows 7 64-bit; HP computer.
It's looking for an installed email client, such as Microsoft Outlook.

What you could always do is attach the MP3 file directly to your email via Internet Browser. Thanks, I tried it doing it that way, by attaching it to an email, since I just use the mail program that comes with my ISP; just waiting to find out if they were able to open and SAVE it. Who knew it could be done that way? It's so simple! But I was under the impression you could only attach text docs or pix...well live and learn!

Thanks again!I just change the file type to something other then mp3 - alerting the recipient he has to change it back.Quote from: Wyngs on May 02, 2013, 10:59:22 PM

Solve : Continuing problems with windows DVD maker?

Answer» It burns jpg slideshows just fine, complete with MP3S. But it has stopped burning you tube videos. Anyone have a clue?

Thanks in advance.
You mean it used to and now it does not?
What changed?
My 'guess' is Youtube has changed, you have to have 'ownership rights' I haven't a clue as to what could have changed, but that You Tube has made some CHANGES is probably the most likely thing.

Thanks, fellas.
I should have stated that I have no problem capturing and downloading the videos. The ones I want to burn are right here in a directory on my computer. They just won't burn. If that should make a difference.

W7.
So, this topic is closed?
Here is a recent item that may shed some light on this. It implies that it is not easy to save and record You Tube video for some reason.
http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-download-youtube-videos/
How to download YouTube videos

It is generally legal to share and embed YouTube videos on the Internet, but downloading them for your own personal use offline is a different story. Downloading videos or using an external application to download videos that lack an official button or similar link is a violation of the YouTube Terms of Service and the video owner’s copyright. Proceed at your own risk.
That says it.
EDIT: MS has to ENFORCE DRM rules. Another burner may skip this.As stated, I have no problem downloading the videos and can view them here on my machine. As to burning them for enjoyment later, that is a legal gray area. However, it is difficult to understand why it would be, unless you were making copies for others. After all, You Tube provides us with a link where we can display the video on any web page we want. That pretty much makes the video available to anyone.

You may skip the part below which is simply why I want the videos....

I don't feel like a pirate....
I have maybe 250 CDs, bought and paid for. From these I have extracted and formed my music collection. I call this my PRIME collection - it's pieces that I can forever listen to and never grow tired of. The total is about 1000 songs. Converted to mp3s, I go to this collection when I want to add music to any device for whatever purpose - an auto trip, etc.

When I discovered You Tube I saw another way to enjoy my music collection. So I set out to find my CD selections as videos on the tube. I have a 63inch tv, and it is quite pleasant to sit back and see/listen to my stuff with the added dimension of sight.

Sturgeon's Law states that 95% of any genre' is crud. And that applies to opera also - the music I listen to most. You-Tube is a sweet source of that 5% I love.

I won't curl up and die if I can't ever get any more, as I have burned off about 75% of the collection. However, getting the remainder to video would be nice.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Solve : A problem package right at the start, with love, Microsoft...?

Answer»

so do I search for the motherboard drivers manually or Windows Update does it automatically ? also I used Driver Reviver software - it showed no out of date drivers... I might be wrong tho

-EDIT-
Okay so I just opened up my Device Manager and noticed something I never noticed before - a few 'Other Devices' (namely PCI slots) have exclamation marks next to them, turns out their drivers are not installed (code 28) or something similar, Driver Reviver can't even find them and Windows built-in driver updater is not able to find drivers for those ... I'll try to find the drivers for those and post back here with (hopefully good) results...Driver finder apps are garbage...not reliable at all.
Same with allowing Windows to update them...reason being if Windows doesn't find the proper ones it simply inserts it's own generic drivers in place for the Device...which is not always adequate.

Travel to the MBoard manuf. site 1st...enter your Model # and what Win version you are running and the drivers should be listed.
DLoad them all...install the Chipset driver 1st and re-boot...then you can install all others.should I let windows update install anything then ? I mean let's say I update my drivers manually it wouldn't overwrite them ?Follow the INSTRUCTIONS above and install your drivers from the Manuf. site...
Once that is complete and they are in place Win Update will not overwrite them since they are the correct ones to have.
Do you know anyone in your area that works on PC's and can assist perhaps ? ?I know a person who could fix my pc in probably 3 hours ... but it would cost me and I have absolute zilch for cash right now ... also this is a good learning experience since I want to learn to fix computers for a living... tho I have long ways to GO yet..Then you need to trust and follow the advice given here...
Without that you will not arrive at a solution.
The missing device is part of the MBoard Chipset drivers...

Please see my 2nd last Post directly above and follow the instructions to a tee...

And get rid of Driver reviver...it's Junk.Yeah I'm working on it now, and yeah I never really trusted any kind of 3rd party software that alters your systems (be it driver updaters or performance boosters etc) I was just so desperate I decided to try it...

-EDIT-

Should I REINSTALL my windows before doing all the updating anew ? I do have a restore point made at first boot after I formated and reinstalled my win7... would that help me restore my pc at that state ?Ok I installed the drivers for my mboard, now to test it... tho I'm still having 'not responding' problems... my HDD goes quiet when those occur, maybe I should take my HDD for warranty check ?

-EDIT-

Crashed 2 minutes AGO ... **** ... Gonna try to clean reinstall my windows and then install the drivers... this is REALLY annoying ...Okay, clean install of Windows, drivers installed haven't crashed for 4 hours and no 'not responding' problems, tho program responsiveness is still questionable, they still stutter from time to time...Did you install ALL drivers this PC requires ? ?
Or did you just feel lucky after the Chpset driver install went well ? ?I didn't notice the reply, thought my topic died... Yes I do have all the drivers (at least the device manager doesn't SHOW any exclamation marks anymore) I have to say that I haven't experienced a BSOD for quite some time now, although my computer still crashes randomly and programs don't respond pretty often...

This is the most common crash: http://imgur.com/fohMdMC
This is less common: http://imgur.com/Lt5RKeV

Both of these are extremely annoying since I have to kill my laptop power (hold the power button) to restart it

I was looking at the System Protection, as regards restore points etc and noted that the C drive protection was checked as turned on but the D Drive was not turned on..
Question,...... do I configure the D drive to protection "On" as well as the C drive, or do not the files on D drive matter as regards a system restore.?
As you can tell I am still struggling to understand the computer logic..
Thanks for any help.Generally system restore points are to bring the OS, system files, registry etc, back to a healthy period before an issue or before malware in some cases. Its best NOT to have personal data as part of restore point because if set up this way all data newer than the restore points creation would get wiped clean in some cases. I got bit using Symantec's GoBack and LOSING personal data. The good thing is the built in Windows restore I haven't lost data on yet. *Also its best to have an external backup of important data. Such as either an external hard drive with a copy of your data which is on your drive D: and back it up in intervals as needed. I use the following command which can be added to a batch file to keep my external hard drive up to date with data from my system.

xcopy C:\2013\*.* F:\*.* /s/d/y

your backup routine to the external or thumb drive large enough to take the data could be written as

xcopy D:\*.* F:\*.*/s/d/y

which assuming your F: drive is your external drive with E: as single DVD Rom, but you can change this to any letter that your external drive is at. The /s/d/y switches will perform this xcopy routine populating your external hard drive with an exact copy of the contents of D: and each time this command is run it will only copy over the changes ( according to date/time stamp ), so if you have for example 742GB of data, and only 329MB has changed since the last backup to external, this xcopy routine will compare your D: drive to the external drive such as F: and it will only copy the newest data to the external since there is no sense in copying over data that hasnt changed since the last backup to external. Basically the very first backup takes a while if there is lots of data, but backups there after are pretty quick if not much has changed. Another reason why I like this xcopy routine. ( Also to note Robocopy has replaced xcopy, BUT xcopy is still functional, so I continue to use xcopy with my Windows 7 system )

The only catch to this is that if you delete data on your D: drive, you will still retain a copy of it on the external. This instruction is meant to populate the external, but not perform a cleanup to make it an exact match for files deleted on the D: drive to then match to the F: drive with those same files removed.

I generally like this populate with data without cleanup to external drive as for it has saved me a few times in the past when I deleted a project and then realized I needed to look back at the project. I am able to attach my external and navigate to where it is or search for the file and get to it. That is why I dont use backup programs or the built in backup feature of windows, and stick to useing this simple command which can be added to a batch file and able to be double-clicked and update the external as frequently as needed.

Also using this backup method, I can keep my most important data to have immediate access to in the fastest manner that is frequently used etc such as music always on the local machine, while data that is not crucial to being readily available on the local machine such as a bunch of family vacation videos, I can delete the video data from my C:\2013\ folder to free up my space on my C: drive which I have been hovering around 120GB free on for newer projects to use that space. My external which is a 1.5TB paired up with a system with a 500GB HDD gives me room to potentially hold almost 3x the capacity of what my local machine can hold in archived data with my local machine running on the most important data. And if I want to view the vacation at disney with my daughter enjoying herself and state of shock when someone in a micky costume walks by her and waves etc, its easily accessible on the external hard drive within a few minutes of setting up the drive and getting it connected.

I have since gotten a 2nd external to use in rotation with the 1st so that I dont have all my eggs in 1 basket. That is if my single external died or got infected somehow, without the 2nd drive potentially clean, I could lose all my data. So I have a pair of externals now that get updated on monthly rotation. *Reason for monthly rotation is to protect against trashing data on 2 drives if I ever had an infection that wasn't caught before the backup. Generally I have been good at not getting virus's, but in the past I lost a bunch of data due to a virus back in the days of Windows 3.1 on my 486 and my backup floppies of my data got trashed by getting infected since the minute they were inserted into the floppy drive they immediately got written the virus to them ( unless the lock tabs were set... well mine didnt have the lock (read-only) tabs set for write protection and so they got trashed. I have ever since implemented a backup with multiple copies of rewritable media that are in a rotation. And backed up my most important data to DVD-R discs to be added to a shoebox archive.Your best bet is to use disc imaging software on a regular basis and you can then disable System Restore completely.Quote

Your best bet is to use disc imaging software on a regular basis and you can then disable System Restore completely.

I agree with Allan that creating a restore image of the drive is a good choice to recover from problems and set a system back to clean or healthy running highly configured condition. I prefer to burn the images to DVD-R discs, however if your image to be created is greater than 20GB (that is the data to be placed into the image exceeds 20GB ) you may want to not have to create a spanned image set of say 17 DVD's and use an external hard drive instead of equal or greater capacity to that of the systems hard drive for use as an image drive only.

However I would suggest still backing up personal data to an external drive on a regular basis as for a restore image would only contain data up to the creation date of that image, and you may find that you want access to the data later without having to use a tool to extract the file(s) from an image file and it would be easily accessible on the external.

I have used Ghost in the past many times and it works great for imaging a system and you can customize your image to create an image of C: without including D: etc, however I havent used it with Vista or 7, as for Ghost 2003 of which I own 5 licensed copies of only supports up to Windows XP.

Windows 7 has an image feature, but I haven't used it yet because I have so much installed on my C: drive that the image would be like 380GB because of all the large games installed at around 10 to 20GB each and that would amount to almost 85 burned DVD's. The next time I build this system clean install with Windows 7 and all drivers and security updates etc, when it consumes around 20GB of space I may try this Windows 7 system image utility and burn up to 5 DVD-R's as a Image Recovery Set. More can be found here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/what-is-a-system-imageThis is something I put together a while ago. I've posted it here a couple of times:

Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of breed, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (installing a SERVICE pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have one.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. ALTERNATIVELY, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.
Thank you all for your EXTENSIVE inputs. I have habitually used "Q Back" on an external hard drive to back up my files on a regular basis.
Admittedly if I do a clean up on my "D" partition of the hard drive, when next the back up occurs the "ghost" files are still on that external hard drive.........but no matter.
Thank you again.
HJust a note of caution for reference...
Image files...from whichever app hate cleanup and defrag processes...
I have seen perfectly good/tested img's ruined by someone defragging the partition/drive they are on.

Solve : When I startup Dell desktop it shows a boot failure and will not start in safe m?

mode It goes to F2 setup mode instead. Is there anything I can do to make it boot up?Don't understand your post.Is the hard drive recognized in setup?

Are the date and time right in setup?

Did you make any changes to the computer right before this started? The most probable cause for this is that the SYSTEM RAM is not conducting. This can happen if the RAM is misaligned due to jerks or there is dust clotted around it. TAKE the RAM out and clean it’s contact edges with a eraser. Also dust AWAY the RAM socket in your motherboard. Dirt can sometimes build up in ‘drifts’ around the memory sticks and the video, sound or modem card slots. If possible use the compressed air to blow it out, avoid to use the brush here. Place it again tightly and reboot.Quote from: mjqdugan on March 23, 2011, 04:10:42 PM

Whoops did not highlight on here. anyway the links are dark blue and take anyone to the site, whereas when not highlighted have to copy link into address BOX and push control and enter. IE automatically highlights links where as other browsers do not - not for me, anyway
All browsers highlight hyperlinks. So, I don't know what your problem is.

With regard to sending a link to someone via email, yes, that may vary by browser. For example, in IE 10 on my laptop running Windows 8, if I right-click on a hyperlink, the right-click menu shows an option to "E-mail with Windows Live". Or, I can click on File (on the menu bar), point to Send, and then select "Page by e-mail" or "Link by e-mail". This is not true with other browsers, although they may have other menu options for sending a page or link. This will generally depend on the features and configuration of your browser and how you do email.

If you copy a link right CLICKING it then in Yahoo Mail you clik on the Globe with a chain and select Link...then paste it in...

Does windows have specific way of adding it? Or can I boot to a live Ubuntu and partition swap space?Optimal method is SETTING partitions sizes before the installation...
It can be done after the fact but there is always the risk of data loss that way.

Solve : Computer Crashes?

Answer»

My desktop computer uses Windows 7. I can only run my computer for about 5-minutes or so before it crashes and shuts off. I've tried to restore the system but it doesn't stay on long enough to COMPLETE the restore process. The same is true when I've tried to run a virus SCAN using McAfee (the computer just won't stay running long enough to do any repair work). What can I do to bring life back to my computer? At first blush it sounds like a hardware problem. Could be anything from the power supply to the hd to ram or even the cpu. Most likely culprit (based on the scant info provided) is the power supply. You can, however, check the ram and hd as follows:

To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

Hard Drive Diagnostics:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable FLOPPY, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of.isotype, useImgBurn:http://www.imgburn.com/to burn.isofile to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba DRIVES, see here:http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Wow! Thanks, Allan, for your help. I will immediately begin to implement the SUGGESTIONS you offered.

Solve : Operating System for Used Laptop--XP Prof or Vista Bus?

However, perhaps for registration purposes, the WINDOWS proof of license sticker that is LOCATED under the battery is for Vista Business. Does it matter which operating system I install?

Once the operating system is installed, should I upgrade to Windows 7? Do Vista since that's what it came with...remember to visit the Manuf. site and DLoad and install all the Vista Drivers...
As to whether it'll run 7 i'd 1st see if the drivers are available...and 2nd Post the SPECS of the PC and someone will take a look and advise...Dell Latitude E6500

Solve : no network access (yellow mark symbol )?

I'd make sure that the firewall is set to allow this software to allow for this internet connection. Adding this to vodafone software to the exception list for allowed communication software. Also you will want to make sure that your settings are correct if the firewall exception does not correct this.

If you go to Start -> Run, enter CMD and when the DOS shell APPEARS TYPE IPCONFIG/ALL and write down your IP, subnet, gateway, and dns info that is shown and post it back here for US to confirm correct settings.

If you want to recover the files, you can use a CD bootable image like Ubuntu Desktop to grab the files. You can run Ubuntu from the CD to access the hard drive of your computer using a Graphical User Interface similar to windows. It does look a little different but its free. You can then save them to an external Drive, and simply re-install windows.

Solve : excel file always saves in unknown format automatically?

Answer»

in my win 7 office 2003 already installed.i uninstalled office 2003 in win7.then i insalled office 2010 in win7.i create a file in excel and saved in desktop as XLSX format.but excel file does not open directly.it see as an unknown format in desktop. microsoft excel program is not in recommended program. i see an excel.pip in recommended program .i could not delete it. how i can open EVERY excel file driectly.please help me. how to come all excel files in excel icon. This can be caused by a couple of things.
My main suggestion for fixing this is to:

  • Right click on the file you want to open, ie. "File.xlsx"
  • Select "Open With..."
  • Click on "Choose Program..."
  • Click on "Microsoft Office Excel"
(If you do not see this option, click Browse, then locate "EXCEL.EXE" (Under C:\Program Files x86\Microsoft Office\Office12\excel.exe"))
  • Check mark "Always use the selected program to open this type of file"
  • Click on "Ok"

If this is 32Bit windows you may not have a "Program Files x86" folder, so just replace that with "Program Files"

This should work to open those files from now on. However this could be a more serious PROBLEM, and you may want to get someone to look at your computer if you are not EXPERIENCED with problems like this.Run a repair on the Office 2010 installation from Add/Remove programs.

This issue results from having MULTIPLE Office installations, as documented here.thanksthanks

Although I do AGREE with Allan that many of the Registry Cleaners can cause serious problems, I personally and as a business use Tune-up Utilities, which does clean out dead, or invalid registry links. It does not do anything beyond that, and is fully reversible from windows boot options if NECESSARY. It also sets a restore point, and allows you to restore the registry from a saved file.

Although, my only warning is, if you have never done a cleaning on your computer before, and are not comfortable restoring, or re-installing your computer, do not fiddle with the registry. It can cause your computer to become unstable, or even un-bootable to the extent of the OS. TuneUp utilities does nothing to improve performance. Cleaning out "dead or invalid registry links" (btw, what's a registry link?) does absolutely nothing to improve performance.Quote from: Allan on April 22, 2013, 11:01:00 AM

Dead registry links are files in the registry that help windows to know what is and is not installed, or where some files reside that are supposed to be included for other programs, if the files are deleted but the links stay, it can cause unnecessary load on a computer since it is trying to find a file that does not exist, You can argue that this is not required, and does not work, however, give it a try on an older system, or even one that is less than 4 months old, and I bet you will see a marked improvement in speed.

You can argue this, however I suggest you try it.There is no argument. Removing dead registry data (I've never heard it referred to as "links" before, but okay) serves absolutely no purpose. Considering the size of the registry, it's like removing an ant from the back of a racehorse and expecting it to run faster. The best registry cleaners do nothing to harm your system (and certainly nothing to help it). The worst of them will leave your computer useless.

Please stop arguing the point or recommending registry cleaners on this forum. Thank you.Quote from: cengbrecht on April 22, 2013, 11:14:38 AM
if the files are deleted but the links stay, it can cause unnecessary load on a computer since it is trying to find a file that does not exist

I do hear this from time to time. It is nonsense. No such "load" is possible. The Windows registry is a database. The operating system and installed programs can store information in that database, such as settings, and later read it out if needed. If a badly designed program does not delete its entries when it is uninstalled, then they will never be called for again. They will just sit there causing no problem at all. Some registry cleaners are actually dangerous and can cause damage to a system, and the ones that are safe do not improve performance. The rest are a mix of snake-oil, actual malware, or dangerously powerful tools unsuited to non-professionals.

The registry is more often mis-undestood than any other Win component ever...
It's a text file that takes milliseconds to load...
Any "dead" entries are ignored...and i see no reason to be concerned about them.

Tune-Up utilities is not an app i would recommend...but that's just my opinion...
Others may see it differently. The ONLY possible advantage to "cleaning out" dead entries from the registry is so it will load faster. But it only loads once (when Windows starts) and as Patio says, it doesn't take long to load at all. Once up, it doesn't matter what's in it as far as UNNEEDED entries are concerned. Quote from: cengbrecht on April 22, 2013, 10:01:21 AM
which does clean out dead, or invalid registry links.
This provides no value at all.

Quote
Dead registry links are files in the registry that help windows to know what is and is not installed, or where some files reside that are supposed to be included for other programs, if the files are deleted but the links stay, it can cause unnecessary load on a computer since it is trying to find a file that does not exist
As ST POINTS out, this is not true. The file is simply not found; this adds no extra load. It's actually more 'costly' performance-wise for it to find a file and them open and read from it. Also, usually these tools really don't know what they are doing; they cannot know if something refers to a file, it uses a guessing algorithm- if it "looks" like a filename, and that file doesn't exist, it deletes it. This is of course a bit problematic if that was a filename, but it was being used by the application for determining where a file should be saved, because the "cleaner" has now deleted that registry entry.

Quote
You can argue that this is not required, and does not work, however, give it a try on an older system, or even one that is less than 4 months old, and I bet you will see a marked improvement in speed.
Any perceived difference is placebo. In fact, that's pretty much what they sell- a placebo. People buy or download the software and want it to have an effect, which changed their perception so they feel that it did. I know somebody who's system was PRACTICALLY unusable because they were a religious user of System Mechanic; it was constantly defragmenting and doing "optimizations", and she couldn't figure out why the system was so slow.

Any and ALL software that claims to speed up a PC by 'optimizing' the Windows Registry is garbage, because the claims are inherently specious.Quote from: Allan on April 22, 2013, 01:11:18 PM

Registry "bloat" could - rarely - be a problem with Windows 95/98/ME but not in the NT OS family. The registry is binary format and is split into "hives". At boot time only a minimal set of hives are loaded and after that hives are loaded as the operating system initializes and as users log in or whenever a hive is explicitly loaded by an application. Maybe we should go back to the good old days and start recommending some of those "RAM" optimisers....

They were good....right ? ?Actually, unless I'm mistaken all hives load with Windows with the exception of User Profile Hives (depending on which user is logging in, of course)What I wrote was: At boot time only a minimal set of hives are loaded and after that hives are loaded as the operating system initializes and as users log in or whenever a hive is explicitly loaded by an application. There is a sequence, and not all hives are loaded at any one time. Gotcha - misread your post

Solve : Cannot multitask through slow pc?

Answer»

Hi Guys
Wonder if someone could help?

I have a PC which of late has been frustrating me with its slowness on booting and being able to achieve more than one task comfortably.
For example itunes can take ages to start and if I extracting something from winzip Im not able to open firefox immediately.

I will admit I DONT have an upto DATE PC and the motherboard is getting on but SURELY it should be capable to do more than one simple task at a time ?
I have scanned for viruses and malware
I have checked for defragmentation

The pc's set up is as follows

Intel LGA775 motherboard
2x 4096 MB (2 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM ) memory
NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS video card
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2666 MHz processor
Using Windows 7 32bit

Like I said not modern but surely its man enough to be a bit quicker ?

A really simple method for making your COMPUTER run quicker is to install and run Tune-up Utilities.
It has a tool called one click maintenance, which works wonders.
I am not sure if the moderators would agree with me fully, however, I use it with my business, and have many satisfied customers.
No I do not make the software, however it has been around since windows 98.As far as I am concerned NONE of those utilities do anything to effect performance. I've tested them all - including TuneUp Utilities.

You probably have some issues with your system that we can help with. First, you say this has happened over time.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) What did you use to SCAN for malware?

3) What do you have running at boot? Have you tried a clean boot?

4) When was the last time you cleaned out the inside of the computer?

Solve : magnifier.exe - options grayed out (this is urgent!)?

Answer»

help! this is a bit urgent - i have to GIVE a presentation/mini-lesson in a job interview in a couple of days & need to use the magnifier tool in win7 but i'm having problems......

laptop 1: acer aspire 5732z, win7 ultimate, 64-bit
laptop 2: fujitsu-siemens amilo-d 7830, win7 pro, 32-bit

  • when i open the magnifier on laptop 1 i can open the views drop down & select full screen, lens, or docked but on laptop 2 full screen & lens are greyed out..................i ideally need to set it to lens (even full screen would be better than docked)

  • when i open the magnifier on laptop 1 i can ADJUST the lens size, under settings. That option is not there at all on laptop 2........because lens is disabled/unavailable?

....any ideas what's going on & how to activate those options?
could it be a difference between W7 Ult & Pro? or between 64 & 32 bit?
i think laptop 2 is too old to take a 64-bit OS

any help welcome!First of all, 32 bit or 64 bit is not the issue.
Please state clearly what you want to do.
The magnifier in WINDOWS 7 is suitable for some help reading find print. It is not a universal tool to enlarge images. Some things it won't do.

Windows n7 magnifier tool does work. Just not they way you would like.

I personally use it and hate it., because it is far from perfect. I also have at hand several optical magnifiers for those times when the windows magnifier just does not help me enough. Is reading fine print the problem?

But are you trying to enlarge your presentation before a group of people? What kind of presentation? Power Point? Is it a video? a Web page? A word DOCUMENT?

Without knowing why you need it, it is hard ton guess. Please reply
i'm being interviewed for a job teaching people with disabilities & have to do a 10 minute mini teaching session to demonstrate my abilities. I wanted to teach the use of a couple of the simple assistive technology tools in W7 - the on-screen keyboard & magnifier & was planning on having two laptops for the learners to use........as I said in my OP, magnifier works on one, but not the other.

Anyway, I’ve since found out why – aero has been automatically disabled because the windows experience index is too low (<3.3)What happens if you run it from Ease of Access Center ? ?it didn't make any difference where i ran it from, it was the same - but i've got it sorted: windows had automatically disabled aero because the windows experience index (start &GT; R click on computer > properties) was less than 3.3 (+/-8yr old laptop) & aero is necessary for the magnifier to work in the full screen or lens modes

thanks for your input though, everyone

Solve : Zip files open all at once instead of opening individual files?

Answer»

I have a cd with 5 zip files on it, each file has about 10000 documents. it has been unzip and i was able to open files before on ANOTHER computer.
I selected windows explorer to open files. (Which didn't work)
after I did that when I go to open main file, it TRY's to open files all at once.
after changing the SETTING to open with other software it did not fix the problem.
It still opens each file all at once. And does not work right. Have you tried to copy all of the CD contents to a directory on the hard drive? \When using XP, it is better to have the files on your hard drive before you try to extract them.
Did you already search the Web for "Unzip files in XP" and follow the recommendations?
Here is the basic guide.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/cf_extract.mspx?mfr=true
Here is details about issues. Has pictures.
http://consumerdocs.installshield.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q108326&sliceId=1
You will also find you tube videos, i recommend reading the MS articles first, if lyou have not already done that.
This is the best I can OFFER without more information. What app was used to zip these files ? ?
Did you try opening them with it ? ?
Barring that being the issue the way they were zipped along with the directory structure is why it's probably acting this way...Have you tried to copy all of the CD contents to a directory on the hard drive? Tryed that didn't work.
I am going to try to zip it or open it with win zip and see if that works.I installed win zip and was able to open all files with that. using free version. Problem solved.

Solve : W7 takes a longggg time to come out of sleep?

Answer»

Hello,
And thank you for having me!
I have Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64 bit, 2007 DELL E510. This is a fresh install with a new WD HHD 500gb SATA about a week ago. It's fully updated, activated and transferred.

My problem is after I take it out of sleep, it takes 4-5 minutes before the normal desktop screen functions will respond to any mouse clicks. "Little blue/green" just keeps spinning the whole time. The mouse and pointer work fine [switched the mouse just to be sure]. After it finally responds, it's business as usual [until the next sleep mode of course]. So for now, I just shut it down because a full reboot takes 20-30 seconds and I am operational.

You know, thinking back, I have an old Vista HHD that did something similar to this also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
T'care,
MikeFirst question.
Was the Dell still under warranty?
Why do a fresh instal on a new Windows 7 machine?
Did the factory recommend nit? Did you use a source from the factory?

Retail version of Windows 7 do not have all the drivers used by Dell on their products. Doing a 'generic' instal may have cost you the power y to do all functions, especially things related to hardware.

Looks like your system is a Pentium 4 3Ghz, which came with 512MB RAM initially from factory.
http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-dimension-e510-pentium/4507-3118_7-31555136.html

How much RAM does this system have with Windows 7?

A system starving for RAM will act like this and 64 bit Windows 7 needs about 50% more RAM than Windows 7 32-bit to run without lag. ( I suggest at least 2GB minimum for Windows 7 64 Bit ) * Lag can also be caused by using newer OS on an old CPU.

The good news is that its controller is a SATA II and not an earlier slower SATA controller, however you will want to make sure that the chipset drivers are operating the SATA controller at SATA 300 and not SATA 150. Having improper (generic) controller drivers can do this and degrade performance.

*Also Windows 7 on a Pentium 4 will never be a speed demon. It will run Windows 7, but you have to be patient with its performance. Windows XP is best on this hardware, (although support for Windows XP is going away in April 2014 ). I ran Windows 7 32-bit on a Pentium D 3GHz (dual-core) with 1.5GB RAM a few years ago and downgraded back to XP Pro, and used this OS on my current newer Athlon II quadcore build. It was ok when web surfing etc, but games that ran ok on Windows XP were lagging severely on Win 7 on the Pentium D 3Ghz because the hardware was burdened by the OS load so greatly that the games no longer had the FREE clock cycles and memory available that it once had under Windows XP. I also noticed lag on youtube videos even though I had a GeForce 7600 video card in it with 256MB RAM with latest drivers. Switching back to Windows XP cured the lag and made the system run like new. I also TRIED Windows 7 32-bit on a early 2Ghz Socket 478 Pentium 4 (single-core) with 2GB RAM and it was very slow, and even single tasking had delays. I also had to force the old Intel 845 chipset to work with Windows XP drivers under Windows 7 since Intel stopped support for that chipset at XP with the motherboard manufactured in 2002.Hi,
Thanks for the RESPONSE. As I posted, it's a 2007 PC. It was sorta Dell's version of a "builder" back then. This original motherboard has 4 slots and was made for 4gb of ram [which it's had for the last two years].
I have two HD's in this and the other is XP Pro. You are right; it really flies when that one is running. I've got a Vista HD for this also. Works good but XP still performs best. I've reading that the Dell download center has a number of current updates for this. There is an especially large download for the ATI display adapter. Think I'll stop in there tomorrow and see if it helps. I'll letcha know how it works out.
Thank you for the great, knowledgeable input. It really helps.
T'care,
MikeMornin',
Well Dell's display/video adapter update didn't help ANYTHING but didn't hurt anything either.

Think I'll just have to get used to giving it the 4 minutes it needs to wake up after sleep [or quit using sleep mode period]. Sometimes it freezes the pointer in place for that 4 minutes, sometimes not. I prefer the frozen pointer so I can't impatiently click away until I throw it into a multiple error meltdown. That forces it's own shutdown and the "pita__" aftermath.

Once up and running, it really works great so I'm OK with this oddity.

Thanks for your time and input.
T'care,
MikeI just tripped across something. You'll not believe what just fixed this. I just installed Firefox 20 [was I.E. 10] and my problem disappeared. I know this defies logic as the browser isn't supposed to be in the game when the desktop screen come's on but here I am seeing it "all fixed".
Whoops. Wait a minute. If you are in sleep mode, the browser is still engaged with the last session. Makes sense now. Happy Camper [:-)

Just passing on info.
Thanks again guys,
Mike

Thanks for the help!

-DWhen did this problem start?

Try adding them to the Exceptions List under Windows Firewall (or whatever firewall software you USE).I would say it started in December. I've been dealing with it for awhile, I'm just FINALLY sick of it. I'll go and add it to the firewall exceptions.

EDIT: Everything suddenly went online without me doing anything, so I guess there might be something wrong with the computer and not the antivirus? It may be a connection issue as well...
Travel to speedtest.net and run the tests...Just to add, don't edit your posts when responding. I don't get the update.

Solve : Sleep and hibernate not working?

Answer»

My Win-7 laptop has issues with both HIBERNATE &AMP; sleep enabled. The hot-key default goes to hibernate even though it says sleep.

Coming out of hibernate Windows will reboot & say computer was shutdown improperly. I DISABLED hibernate & use sleep, then change advanced power settings & disable sleep for USB.
https://www.google.com/search?q=windows+7+reboots+after+sleep&ie=UTF-8

Every once in a while, a Windows Update or some other update will re-enable hibernate.
Turn off hibernate with this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730

When this first happened, I thought the battery had drained when it was in sleep. It happened a few more times & I thought the battery must be bad. Then it started happening with the new battery, then it happened while plugged into the AC ADAPTER, so started searching for a cure.

I bought an HP laptop about 2 1/2 months ago. I just enabled hibernate today, setting the computer to hibernate when I press the power button, and tested it. No problem. I use the same setting with an old HP Compaq d530CMT Pentium 4 desktop system I'm using with Windows 7. Both computers go into sleep mode after a set time. Since he's been ABDUCTED apparently...we may never know.

Solve : IE Has stopped working ????

Answer»

Hi ya Fellas! Can any of you tell me please why I keep getting this message when I click on an url to get somewhere on the net??? I keeps happening and it is so annoying Because Internet Explorer is just awful.
I would switch to either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. In my opinion, they offer a much better browsing experience.

However, to fix your problem, try this:

Close Internet Explorer
Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Internet Options
Hit the Advanced tab.
Click Reset, and then Reset again.
Click Close, then OK.
Reopen Internet Explorer and see if the problem persists.Quote from: GLOOPS on April 14, 2013, 12:50:42 PM

Hi ya Fellas! Can any of you tell me please why I keep getting this message when I click on an url to get somewhere on the net??? I keeps happening and it is so annoying

Sometimes the Flash Plugin can CAUSE this. It's ALSO common if you have any number of AV or security suites installed.

The reason is because IE is designed to be extensible, and PROVIDES ways for AV vendors to hook into the browser. If, however, the plugin crashes, IE crashes with the shown message.

Try starting Internet Explorer using Start->Run (Windows Key+R) and entering:

CODE: [Select]iexplore -extoff
This will start Internet Explorer in Safe mode, with all Addons and extensions disabled. If this solves the problem, then it was definitely an add-on.

(the OS as well as the IE version in question can be useful here as well) Thanks guys I did what you said Carbon and things SEEM ok now I thank you both for your trouble here. Would be lost without your support here. Quote from: GLOOPS on April 14, 2013, 12:50:42 PM

Solve : Failed reformat?

Answer»

so i had originally had vista then went to win7 upgrade package, on doing so i ran into problems with my blu ray drive DRIVERS not being compatible or the drivers posted on HP web site didnt work or would not instal properly. thus upon giving up on that fight i wanted to revert back down to vista until i found a proper solution. i backed up all files i wanted and started the drive format process (via instructions from HP web site as well as the step by step instructions in the program itself) and used the recovery disks from original purchase to put vista back on it and every thing seems to go great and vista appears to be back on it and the computer returned/ reset to original purchased format. but upon trying to start up the computer it gives the message that windows failed to instal properly and that i should reinsert the the first recovery disk. i have done this and followed the instructions as well as try to just start over and no matter what i do it ALWAYS seems to come out the same way. so at this point it seems to be stuck in a start up loop. i can get into the startup menu as it restarts and get to the recovery functions and i have tried using these functions as well but nothing seems to make a difference. any suggestions?Sounds backwards but have you tried inserting disk #2 when prompted ? ?
I had this issue ...also with an HP awhile back and that solved it.yeah that was my first guess, that geek squad labled them wrong so i ran them in every order im pretty sure2 questions then...
Did you delete and re-create/format the partition you installed to ? ?
Have you checked the HDD for errors ? ?i checked it before i started and there was no problem but because it wont load all the way i cant really check it now. ive run all the checks i can from the start up menu and they come back fine. as for the partition im pretty sure it erased it and then remade it because it is still there but it has none of the "check POINTS" on it to revert to (i tried that too) also after a good while or when it goes to finish the INSTALL and start the initial boot to finalize and set up every thing it over heats and shut off screwing up the instal meaning i would have to start over. i would replace the fan but i have no way to know if its the fan, sensor, or some other issue. ive tried using a cooling fan under it but it doesnt seem to work enough on its own to prevent it. my only thought on that would be to get ice packs but idk... Well i didn't read that whole large paragraph with zero punctuation...however it's either a heat or HDD issue...
Go from there.hey there is some in there lol, so you would lean towards that and not so much to bad disks? The HDD manuf. all have a FREE diagnostics...
DLoad it and follow the info on creating a bootable CD...run the Long test.
This will rule out the HDD as the culprit if it is OK.

Solve : Vista ndis.sys and netio.sys corrupt. How to fix it, please??

Answer»

HP Pavilion Slimline S3301F (p/n KE553AA). Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. Windows fails to start. The Safe Modes and Last Known Good Configuration also fail to start. Startup Repair log details say 2 boot-critical files are corrupt, ndis.sys and netio.sys. System Diags. all pass... CPU, RAM, and HDD, and the computer passes POST. Check Disk (chkdsk /r) in UBCD4Win completes. No errors reported. The only recent changes are that I have disassembled and cleaned the computer, applied new thermal paste to CPU, replaced the RAM with OEM-spec sticks from another HP, replaced the CMOS/RTC battery, and reset Time/Date in BIOS. Afterwards, the computer worked perfectly, and completed 3 shutdown and restarts. But when I powered on the computer today...this. The computer did not come with a recovery disk, only a Recovery Partition on the hard drive, and atm, the only OS disks I have are generic XP Home, XP Pro, 7, and Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora). Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS much.Best way to fix this is by using a Vista Disc to PERFORM a repair installation if one could be borrowed. If thats not an option, you can boot the system with a Live Linux distro and replace the ndis.sys file and netio.sys file with known good from another system running Windows Vista. Lastly these files can be acquired online, but that would be a last result and would also need the system BOOTED with access to the NTFS partition to copy these files in overtop of the corrupted ones.

*Also to note, problems like this sometimes seem like an endless battle. You replace 2 files that the system is complaining about and you are faced with more problems.

I would suggest that if you can get this system to boot, to CREATE the restore disc set using the utility that should be present on this system, then backup all your data and install clean off of these FRESH recovery discs.Thank you, Dave. Sorry it's taken so long to answer. I did try to use a borrowed Vista install DVD to attempt a repair install, but to work, it needed to be started from inside Windows. Given what you said about possible further issues after replacing the .sys files, I decided to backup the Users' files and do a Factory Restore, then restore the Users' files. Then I created a set of restore disks. So far so good. Thanks again, both for your help, and for your fast response. You should know you can't run a repair install from inside Windows by now...so i don't understand that comment...It is possible to do a repair install of Vista by using the Upgrade option to install Vista over an existing install. But for it to work, it has to be started from inside Windows and it has to be the same version as the one installed. These 3 links explain it better.

Solve : allowing non admins to run a program as an admin without retyping admin password?

Answer»

I am look for a WAY to do one of the following:

run a program as in admin on a non admin account with out having to retype the password all the time.

or

remove a the sheild from programs with unidentified publishers.(attatched is a picture of the shield)

This is a Vista COMPUTER.

[RECOVERING disk space, attachment deleted by admin]This might be what you need, RUNAS for Vista. I use to use RUNAS with power user credentials for tools for users to execute, and wrapped the BATCH file into an exe so the users could not edit to look at credentials. We never placed our SYSTEM admin privileges into a runas batch file that a user had access to for obvious reasons. The power user privilege allowed for elevated privileges at the local computers but not allow access to where they do not belong in case anyone was a rogue employee or this compiled batch ever made its way ( leaked etc ) into the wrong hands somehow.

Solve : Complete computer crashes?

Answer»

Not sure if this is a Windows problem or hardware, nevertheless, here's the problem:

At random MOMENTS my computer crashes completely (sound goes to *censored*, keyboard doesn't respond, screen shows gibberish [as shown in the pictures I will link]) and I can't seem to find the culprit... chkdisk and /scannow came up clean, memtest - clean, CPU stress test - clean... Reinstalled my Win7 over 12 times in the last 2 weeks now... I'm at my wits end, any suggestions how to act further ?

Sorry for low quality images - my camera lens is cracked...Post re-opened by REQUEST...Looks like the main board of that laptop might be troubled. Unfortunately because its a laptop you are very limited to the ability to troubleshooting it down to a video card etc. I see LOTS of info on google about this model and scrambled displays, which is usually a good indication that this is a common issue with this model.

I cooked a Toshiba laptop about 4 years ago PLAYING World of Warcraft and other games on it, and fortunately Toshiba's warranty was still active on it to send it back RMA. It was running very hot gaming and I ignored the heat issue and I ended up roasting the GPU to the point of failure. It started by giving me warning signs and I continued to game on it and killed it as a result of this. Do you know if this laptop has ever ran really hot on you before? Any locations that were very hot to the TOUCH, such as the underside of the laptop in any locations.

I probably could have avoided killing my Toshiba had I used a cooling pad to add extra airflow to the underside of the company laptop. Thanks for the reply, seems like this problem is connected to my other problems that I have another topic on, I installed the motherboard drivers yesterday tho I had no time to test it extensively, gonna do it this weekend but so far it looks promising
