Solve : How to set up wireless connection correctly on Vista pc?

Answer»

Hi

I have a Toshiba laptop - it does not recognize or identify wireless connections at all. WHen I go to "Connect" - Windows says there are no ADDITIONAL networks .. My friend visits me often and her computer (XP) is able to identify wireless connections in my building right away...what should I do to get my computer to do that...I have just set up the Linksys wireless router and I can't find it at all on the system. My computer is connected to one network that is when my cable WIRE is connecting from the modem to my laptop. When I disable it and then connect the cable from the modem to the router, etc as per instructions from the Linksys manual....i was not able to find the internet connection. How do i fix this problems?

In Vista, do i need to set up another network for the wireless router? how do i do that? thanks for any information i can get.

does the laptop havea wireless adapter? Is it properly installed?Hi

I don't think so....I have a Toshiba laptop ..it says to press Fn F8 to turn it ON..I did but the LIGHT was not on.....i tried to call Toshiba support ..they are closed for the holidays....I went to update the DRIVER (wireless Realtek network adapter)but it failed to solve my problem. My computer is still not able to detect wireless netework ...If I buy a wireless adapter, will it work?

thanksif you have a wireless driver properly installed, there is LIKELY a wireless adapter built-in.

Have you set up the router using it's setup pages (by accessing it's IP through IE while connected via a wired connection?)

Solve : Scrolling Issue?

Answer»

Just got Vista and have found that when working on a document or the Internet, a small vertical scroll bar pops up and TAKES if I don't see it (most of the time) it takes me someplace else on the page/screen.

How do I get rid of this obnoxious tool?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!Have you checked your system for malware.... I'd use malwarebytes or spybot search & destroy to scan and clean your system for free.

I have had better luck with malwarebytes www.malwarebytes.com to remove some stuff that spybot was unable to clean up. So I generally run malwarebytes first then, spybot as a followup, although havent seen ANYTHING yet get past malwarebytes. This thing?

If so, this happens, if you CLICK mouse wheel. Click any mouse button, and it's GONE.

Solve : Office 2000/2003/2007 Reconfigure/Reinstall Occurances?

Answer»

At my wits end, This Christmas I bought my DAUGHTER a new PC, on it was Office 2007 Student, it looked different so I downloaded the 90 day trial version of 2007 Standard from Microsoft on my PC to give it a try. The first thing I noticed after installation was it began to Reconfigure/Reinstall whenever I opened up any module and it did it continually therafter. So I tried remove it and reinstall it (about 3 times), so I went online and realized that I just downloaded another bad problem from Microsoft. But to make matters worse I saw references of similar issues to Office 2000 and 2003 as well . Not to be daunted I tried reinstalling Office 2003 and 2000 numerous times the problem stuck, to me it appears to be a Vista issue (go figure). I have done everything that I can imagine, I have done everything that MS said to do including reinstalling VISTA (I even reloaded it on another newly formatted drive!). I have done everything that I can see on the net .... My only conclusion, It has to be one of the updates MS applies to VISTA. I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit on a AMD quad core, MSI K9A2 (4GB) with 3 hard drives and 2 ATI 3870's in crossfire. I don't want to go through the whole wipe/reformat and reload again, its got to be in the registry.. HelpAfter 3 days I have given up, I downloaded the free version of Incredimail and it worked from the get-go, I'm looking for an MS compatible Document program now.. I believe openoffice is compatible with MSOffice documents- but I'm not sure. It's worth a shot.Quote from: Tomarkle on December 27, 2008, 07:08:47 PM

This Christmas I bought my daughter a new PC, on it was Office 2007 Student, it looked different so I downloaded the 90 day trial version of 2007 Standard from Microsoft on my PC to give it a try.
It looked different from what, earlier versions of Office? Of course. It's Office 2007 and it IS much different. The familiar menu bar and toolbars of previous versions is gone. Did you think the Standard version was going to be different in this respect from the Student and Home version? No, they're both Office 2007.

If your daughter want Office, then the Student and Home (or is it Home and Student) version would PROBABLY a good choice among the various editions of Office 2007 that are available.

Where do you stand now with all this installing of different versions of Office? Do you any version installed now?

After 3 days I have given up, I downloaded the free version of Incredimail and it worked from the get-go, I'm looking for an MS compatible Document program now..
What does this have to do with the installation of Office? Incredimail was to replace "Outlook", which was not working either. I finally settled on Kingsoft Office as a replacement to MS Offices Word, Excell and PP it gave me a 100 day trial. As a FOOT note I tried installing MS Works 2006 and it to had reinstall and reconfigure issues. Something in Vista be it security or registry has serious issues with its office apps.. I've been using their (MS) office suites SINCE the 3.1 days. MS Lost a longtime customer I don't what your problem is there but I've had no problems with Office 2007 Pro in my Compaq Presario notebook PC running Vista Home Premium. ALSO, the Home and Student trial version that was installed on the computer when I bought it worked fine. MS Works was also installed on it and I had no problems with it; I've removed it since I have Office 2007.

I have not heard of Kingsoft Office, so I don't know how it compares to MS Office. You might also want to look at OpenOffice.org.

They, who?
What are internet filters?
"They" are the owners of the computer. I am trying to help them get it fixed. Internet filters are filters you can install so young children and whoever cannot go and look at porn, etc.....I don't see anything malicious, so let's clean some unnecessary startups, including those, which may be phoning home.

I need a new one.Hello, here is an update. They finally did a windows vista reinstall, I guess it is all on the hard drive, he didn't use a disk, and put the computer back to the STATE that they purchased it .... He clicked off that he did not want HP updates........and it still is doing the same thing. I am wondering if it didn't really wipe windows out completely. If they unplug the computer from the router, than they are ok. Any thoughts......?Hello. Here is another update... They suspected that the computer has been using the internet since they got it new a few months ago....so they called their ISP and sure enough.......it has been using the internet extra ever since they got the new computer. It's fine if they unplug it and the laptops in the house do not cause the same problem.. Thanks. The customer called their ISP and got them to check who is using their computer. What they told them was that it was ip addresses, it was like someone was doing file sharing or SOMETHING with them. It is somehow downloading to their computer..... The tech said there was no way he could tell who it was because it is ip addresses and not a website... Any thoughts....Yes.
He doesn't know what he's talking about because they can not only track incoming traffic but also the offending IP addys...
Not a panic situation but i would suggest a backup of important data and a wipe of the drive and a clean install...
It sounds like he wanted the rest of the day off.Ok, the isp tech sent a screen shot is attached of IP ADDRESS that it going/ coming to the customer. I ran the "tracert" command on them and they all seem to have something to do with youtube. 64.15.115.6, 64.15.112.171, 64.15.112.232 are some of them. Any ideas..?

have you happened upon the forum rules in your travels? It explicitly states:

HOWEVER- your problem appears to be with daemon tools install, is this correct? While somewhat borderline, if your having difficulties with the install of Daemon tools, we could perhaps offer assistance. (doubtful, I'll leave that up to the moderators to decide)It seems that after Christmas, we get more and more people asking for hacking help, cracking help, password "recovery", and anything that is far too easily invalid.

People are getting new computers, and laptops.

Sisters and brothers get new computers, put passwords on them, and rightfully dont share their own property. (I dont share my computer! And if I do, I SET up multiple accounts, DEFINITELY setting the second account as "Limited" since I dont want people installing stuff on it.)
Same for Parents who get computers, they put parental CONTROL software on them. Vista has parental control built in, and setting yourself as an admin would allow you to disable that.

New computer? I need to torrent a new game!
Now my computer can actually run it... if only I were honestly smart enough to read a little bit to figure out how I can mount the ISO image!

Solve : NTLDR is missing can't repair?

Please help mu computer can't repair for missing NTLDR files.. i repair already but it cannot repair its going to back missing NTLDR when i restart. why should we do?

Welcome to the CH forums.

Please read this and respond with the info.

Please describe what you have already tried.

you need to use the installation disk you first installed Office 2000/XP.
its because you have changed the HDD from one machine to another, so it locks you out, it you use the same operation system disk, and go to reinstall it will load the missing fales.
BUT don't go and format or wipe the drive.
Don't use the console back up.
install over the top.
NTLDR refers to the BOOTLOADER perforrm a repair operation from the cd of the orinal OS which u have installed.........Quote from: pohhop on June 17, 2008, 08:13:31 AM

and if repairing from the windows os cd is a drastic step then wat according to u is the best solution to johnJC's problem....It's been two weeks since the OP has responded to their original post...

http://www.tinyempire.com/shortnotes/files/ntldr_missing.htm

Just wanted to add that I had this problem today when I flashed my BIOS, and I got the missing NTLDR MESSAGE and tried many things, like go into recovery and stuff. After reading this and that on this forum I tried one last thing. I have 3 hard drives connected to my PC and when I flashed my HD it must of changed the order of which one to boot from. I knew which one had the OS, so I just moved it up and no more missing NTLDR......nothing but net....swooosh! Hope that helps When you flash the BIOS nothing on any drive is changed at all so i'm not sure how this could have happened unless you had prior issues...Well there is one thing that is going on on PC and that is that I installed xp on one partition and vista on the other and in my frustration deleted vista a while back. How do I get rid of the choice to CHOOSE Vista or an older version? As far as the bios flashing problem, all I know is that I got that NTLDR message, which led me here and in a hit and miss move saw that my drives where in the wrong order in bios, and changed them, which allowed me to enter xp again. I tried to do that recovery for xp,with zero results. I guess I could have really screwed things up with my system, but I have pretty good luck getting things working again. What if you don't have the windows disk and while your computer is loading it says NTLDR is missing enter ctrl+alt+delete to reboot and it doesn't log you in to your comp.?Welcome to the CH forums.

If you have this problem please read this and start your own topic.

Turn laptop off. Physically remove the drive. Put it back. turn laptop on.
If the above didn't work...
Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double CLICK on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Hello Broni,
Just fyi, the cd/dvd is NOT even listed in the device manager.
I will try the above-- remove/replace the cd drive.
Thanks,
JimI didn't say anything about the drive being present in Device Manager.
Re-read my PREVIOUS reply.Broni,
I just forgot to tell you about the device manager thing in my first post. My bad.

I removed and REPLACED the cd drive and now everything LOOKS good. The drive is working!

Solve : A ghost disk drive in my computer?

Answer»
I USED to use the READYBOOST function of Windows Vista.
One day, I pulled out my Readyboost flash drive without doing the Safely Remove Hardware procedure.
Since that day, the ghost of the removable disk haunts my computer. The disk shows up in the Computer window but I cannot access it. I've tried to stick the flash drive back in, but it seems the flash drive has been busted--I cannot get any RESPONSE from it. I tried to eject the ghost drive but it would invariably show up after a reboot.

COULD anyone tell me what this ghost icon does to my computer; and tell me how to get rid of this ghost for good? Hmmmm......lets see...

First, I would try going into Safe Mode and see if the 'ghost' is still there.

If it is, try a System Restore to a day before the problem started.

If that still doesn't work, just post back saying 'it didn't work' and we can try something else that might work.

As for the Flash Drive, does it work on another computer?

Solve : computer runs slowly.?

Answer»

Hello, I don't know if this is a Vista problem or a hardware problem. I recently purchased an AMD X64 Dual Core processor 6000+, a new motherboard, and 4 gb of ram. I am running it on an a 32 bit Vista operating system service pack 1. When I was installing the chip inside the motherboard, I accidentally forgot to connect the CPU fan to the motherboard. So during the process of installing Vista of course it would shut off all the time due to overheating. That WENT on for a day. Now the fan is connected and everything, but my computer runs slowly and get's frozen a lot. Would this be due to damage to the chip or the motherboard from overheating? Any help would be appreciated. ThanksI would first try re-installing Vista as any OS that had interruptions in the process however slight will give you issues...
Was thermal paste used correctly ? ?

InstructionsThe overheating issue could be a factor.
But in your case it is best to get back to the company that sold you the machine. When you bought the computer from them, did you ask if it would have problems with the 32 bit Vista? There are known issues with dual-core and AMD CPU s.
Please understand I am not trying to bad mouth AMD or dual-core design. The big part of the problem is with a very large company the SELLS Operating Systems to us users and does not say ENOUGH about how many patches it takes to get it to work right. Each package should have a message:

Quote

Warning: The product may not work right on older harware. And it has not been tested on new hardware. You may need to update this product daily. Not faor use by people with high-blood pressure.

The people who sold him the machine had nothing to do with the OS install as he stated he did it himself and had issues...
I doubt they would be much help under this circumstance.
However if it turns out to be a hardware issue then that's another thing.I recently had the same problem when running windows vista , the best thing is to do is backup all infomation to a Spare hard drive or USB Sticks and Then do a full system restore so it will reset to the factory settings this will help your issueQuote from: Greggaz on January 01, 2009, 06:21:26 AM

If I had to pick XP would be the best that is released fully so far.
It all depends what HARDWARE is involved and how the OS is set up, plus how the performance is measured.

Solve : Vista Freeze?

Answer»

Hi, I am using Vista Business. The freeze happens when I "mouse click" while using Internet Explorer or Windows Mail (hourglass shows). Often, if I wait 60 seconds, the freeze will clear automatically. If I am impatient, and keyboard...Ctr-Alt-Del, after a few seconds, the Task Manager will appear. After i EXIT Task Master, the freeze is clearsed. The freeze does not seem to occur while working off line.

I have uninstalled every program that I do not NEED, and all add-ons in Ynternet Express.

About a month ago, I had a FAKE spyware problem that the Hope Forum resolved. I am very sure that I do not have a virus or spyware. I have Super AntiSpyware Pro and CA ANTI virus installed and scams weekly.

Any help will be appreciated. Jim Processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space, please.cpu - AMD Athlon, 64 x 2 x 5200 + Dual Core CPU

You may have some hardware problem, and it'd be advisable to take advantage of the warranty. Further tinkering may void it.Cause: Vista is putting hard drive into sleep mode. When you do something that accesses the hard drive the IO call blocks for a few seconds.

Fix: Extend time before Vista puts hard drive to sleep in Control Panel -> System & Maintenance -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> Hard Disk -> Turn off hard disk after ...

Try reverting back to the original nVidia drivers...

Solve : Two problems (Windows Vista)?

Answer»

Hello,

I am having two problems with my computer:

Here are my specs:

HP Pavilion M9040N

Windows Vista PREMIUM Home Edition

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 Ghz

Physical Memory : 3.0 GB

Problem #1:

My computer (HP Pavillion M9040N) has Windows Vista Premium Home Edition. Everything is very fast on it except for one thing.......When I try to install programs.....it is extremely slow....Sometimes installation will begin and then pause for like 5 or 6 hours and then finish it. Other TIMES, the computer TAKES 3 hours just to start the installation. Every game that I try to install takes at leas 6 - 8 hours to install, but yet when I try them on my old Dell computer, it installs within 10 - 15 minutes.
I often have to let the installations run over night. I just defragged my drives and even freed up plenty of hard disk space. This problem happens whether I install programs from a CD/DVD ROM disk or from the internet. Downloads are very quick....Installations are terrible slow.

Problem #2:

When I "RESTART" my computer or the computer restarts automatical after a Windows update, the monitor shuts down but the tower remains on. I manually shut the computer down and then try to turn it on again but the monitor is still blank. So, I opened my tower and "pushed" in the video card....and then it works! I have to do this each time to make my computer boot up. This problem does not happen when I "Shut Down" the computer....only when I Restart. The video card doesn't seem to be lose but touching it makes it work.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

THANKS,

Scott
1. Remove video card, clean connectors with pencil eraser. Put it back.
2. Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any ERRORS, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it here: http://www.uploadbigfiles.net/, and post download link.

Solve : Computer doesn't start Please Read?

Answer»

Ok.... Will try to explain everything hear.... To make things easy for you all
My comp is:
Windows Vista x64 service pack 1
Intel Pentium D 3.2 ghz
8gb of Coursier memory
2 x nvidia 8800 gt in sli
800w psu
asus p5k-deluxe
antec case
.....
Rite, now the problem...
When i try to turn the computer on it doesn't do anything..., absolute NOUT, if i switch off the wall socket and turn it BACK on the fans turn and lights come on for a split second then nothing again....
The only way i can get it to GO again, is to remove the graphics cards, and disconnect the power supply to them, then reinsert them 1 at a time, making sure the green light on the board glows each, after each 1.

This happens everytime i turn off the computer, and as of which is really getting on my nerves... Everything works as when i connect it all again, it all works fine and dandy... Far CRY 2 and everything....

Any ideas?? Will leave comp on so i can check my emails for now lol. Thanks in advance
MikeDid you assemble this machine yourself ? ?

Were MBoard standoffs installed ? ?
Thermal paste used ? ?

What make is that PSU ? ?yea i did build it myself... probably the problem
mb standoffs am guessing are the metal points underneath the MOTHERBOARD that the screws to fix the motherboard into place screw into, So yes is that answer...

thermal paste on the cpu to fan? was brand new so already came with it i believe... as there isa sticky residue between the fan and the cpu

psu was oryxx titan, did email wear i got ti from and they said i could send it back for them to take a look at it, but surely if the computer does turn on after a lot of reassembling, the psu is fine? (could be wrong)

Any ideas

P.s Thank you for replyingOk, looking back over at ur advice, i saw that i was missing 3 standoffs... so took it all apart again, put them in with screws, and changed over my sata cables and dvd cable with the factory ones, and all booted up 1st time, so am going to say thank you for all your help and hope that the standoffs were the problem!!!

Many thanks and happy knew year

p.s just noticed i put it into the wrong thread, shoudla beeen hardware, sorry!!It may be a good idea to re-do the thermal paste so as to protect your investment...Intel stopped pre-applying it awhile ago in their OEM/Retail boxed units...
Thermal Paste Guide

Not familiar with that PSU but there's alot of them on eBay...not that that means anything...
If you can borrow one for overnight testing however you can eliminate it as a suspect...It's amazing what problems missing or misplaced standoffs can cause. They're metal, so they can easily short out something important. I've been down that road myself a few times.

It's a good indication of a scam site. That and no direct contact information...Theoretically, you can have multiple copies of Windows on one system.

There are several ways to do it:

1) Virtual machines.
2) Install different copies of Windows on the same partition using different system folders.
3) Create a partition for each COPY of Windows. You'll be restricted to the limits of Basic Disks and Primary/Extended Partitions unless you use Dynamic Disks or GPT. Install a copy of Windows on each partition starting with the oldest version of Windows and work your way to the newest.
4) Use separate hard drives. Same rules as #3, though.

Barring #1, it's just not realistic to have 100+ copies of Windows on the same machine...and the big question would be why...The most # of OS's i've had running on one system at a time would be 8....
My benchtest machine CURRENTLY has 5.I remember this software from the ads in computer magazines some years ago. Osloader2000. It's just a boot manager like Grub or lilo. Except it's not free. It is not a scam exactly but the hype is somewhat excessive.
System Commander is still around if you really want 100 Windows installs...Quote
3) Create a partition for each copy of Windows. You'll be restricted to the limits of Basic Disks and Primary/Extended Partitions...
So for Basic Disc how many would that be?
The Hype on that site implied that each system can be on a logical partition, that there could be 99 logical partitions and one primary. I think Windows 2K can boot as far as the fifth or sixth partition. But 99 logical partitions?
The article did not say anything about multiple drives, it was taking about dividing up just one Hard Drive.
Just now I tried to put 6 FAT logical partitions and I got some kind of error using a program that otherwise has been very good. Maybe FAT does not work?

Hello, Patio. How did you do the five? What did you use?
Is it even possible to go beyond twenty partitions on one hard drive?

CURIOUS minds want to know!

Hmmm...there is a limit of four primary partitions on one MBR disk; or three primary partitions and an extended partition. The extended could contain any number of logical drives you want, so yes, you could have 100+ partitions this way. Your boot files (BCD/bootmgr for Vista/Server 2008/7; ntldr/ntdetect.com/boot.ini for other NT OSes, or whatever boot loader this software uses) must be on the primary partition, though).

Solve : I need help with Vista?

Answer»

Ok, my cousin bought a Acer Aspire 5920G laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed, she is a novice with computers and like so many people did not realise she needed to create a recovery disc. One of her children done something to the laptop, so now all you get is the blue screen of death .... error message code: 0x00000024 (0x00190444, 0x865eca68, 0xc00000102, 0x00000000)

I can access System Recovery Options, which gives me the following options:

Startup Repair. (I have ran this and it tells me it is unable to repair it automatically, the detailed report basically says the system volume on disk is corrupt, and recommends running chkdsk, which i have also done).

System Restore (This tells me that i have to specify a windows installation which i have done, from Dos command and there were no restore points).

Windows Complete PC Restore (Comes up with the error: An internal error occured. The following information MIGHT HELP you resolve the error:

The file or directory is not a reparse point. (0x80071126).

Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (which brings up an error message: A problem is preventing Windows from checking for memory problems during startup. Try to check for problems again by running the tool manually.

Command Prompt (obviously i have used this to try and use system restore, and i can access the X drive, which is where the restore files are located)

I know you can buy a recovery disk from Acer (conveniently) But surely there is some other way to fix the *censored* thing. I have searched around a bit to see if anyone has uploaded the recovery files required for that particular model, but so far without success.

Any help please guys?

According to MSDN:
Quote

A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable DEVICE drivers to the most current versions.

Try the suggested fixes including chkdsk /r and see if it helps.
Another thing to try is Start/Run sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Let it run til it finishes.

WARNING: If you do go ahead and use the ACRE CD to fix this all her programs and DATA will be gone...this should be a last resort.
It basically takes the machine back to Day One status...Well i can only get into things via DOS prompt i tried chkdsk and all of that, if i go into regedit and CLICK import i can view all the files on the X partition (for the recovery disk) however i cannot access the C drive.

I have now been out and bought a lead to plug it into my machine via USB and that won't let me into the drive, it just says the directory is corrupted and unreadable, i think i need a third party program that can scan for files and recover them, if i can get the recovery files onto a different machine then i would be able to create the recovery disk(s) i guess.

This is your best bet for data recovery before you try a bunch of tools that may inadvertently get you farther away from her files...
It allows you to hook up a laptop drive to a Desktop machine and copy/burn all the important stuff you may need...

2.5" to IDE connector...available at any PC shop for 8 to 12 Bucks.

Report back with how the drive is being reported via the USB connector you bought in Disk Management...they are un-reliable for grabbing data but i didn't see this post earlier.I bought a cable as what i stated ....

I have DOWNLOADED a file called erecovery from acer .... but it is doesn't appear large enough to hold the vista setup ..... it's a *censored* nuisance because i can see via regedit from the dos prompt that the files to restore it are intact ...... i feel i need a decent program to probe and pull the files from the hard drive or the acer restore files for that model

Solve : Vista Problems?

Answer»

I have a VB6 APP that runs fine on a W2K workstation. It is made to send a print job to a web server.

I TRY to do the same job with a Vista workstation and it doesn't work. I have made a network capture and the Vista workstation is blocking the out put of the print job to the web server. I don't know why.

The firewall is off and file sharing is on. Any ideas as to what I can check to get this working?

Thanks
Try running it in Compatibility mode...
Create a desktop shortcut to it.
Right click the shortcut and select properties and select compatibility mode. Thanks for the answer.

I am not able to do that. When I bring up the window to make the CHANGE its grayed out. Its says it can't make the change because its on a network drive.

I FOUND another way to get that done. I am going to try it and if it works I will let you know.

Thanks!
Cool !It didn't work. I got the same error about not being able to set it because it is a network program.

I did a google for something like blocked VB app on Vista. From what I saw SP1 for vista blocked a bunch of 3rd party apps.

Now if I could figure out a work around....

I am going to be doing some research about this. If I find ANYTHING out I will post it.

Thanks!

Solve : directx 10.1 on vista sp1?

Answer»

I have a copy of WINDOWS vista ultimate sp1 and I installed it but dxdaig says i only have 10. I have a 4870 1gb graphics card.1gb Graphics Card? Really??

What DirectX Version are you looking for? Tried downloading it yet?ya 1gb graphics card. I am trying to get dx10.1 sorry for forgetting that. I cant find it anywhere to download!I found this on microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups..

1.
I have the following installed
Vista SP1, DirectX March 2008 SDK, ATI RADEON HD3650

2. Why does DxDiag report DirectX 10, instead of DirectX 10.1??

3. Why does the DxCapsviewer report Vs/PS 3.0 instead of Vs/PS 4.1

4. Only the DDI version reported is 10.1

So is this all 'By Design' or a bug...?

Greetings

Juan Jansen

Why does DxDiag report DirectX 10, instead of DirectX 10.1??

The "DirectX version" number really has very little meaning as of Windows XP
SP2. "DirectX" is part of the OS as of that point, so knowing the "DirectX
version" is irrelevant. What matters is the version of Windows you are
using. That said, many people do use DXDiag in their support structure so it
reports "10" instead of "9.0c" for Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008. The
addition of Direct 3D 10.1 was not significant enough change to impact any
other part of the API so it wasn't deemed important to report a larger
number for DXDiag. You can tell from the OS output whether or not the user
has Windows Vista SP1 installed or not (Build 6001).

See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb219742.aspx

> 3. Why does the DxCapsviewer report Vs/PS 3.0 instead of Vs/PS 4.1

DxCapsViewer is only showing the information reported to Direct3D 9. Shader
model 4.0 is only available when using Direct3D 10/10.1, and shader model
4.1 is only available when using Direct3D 10.1. Direct3D 10 and Direct3D
10.1 do not have "caps" in that sense. It might be useful in some cases if
this tool reported the present of 10 & 10.1 support, as well the few format
usages that are 'optional', but in general there's not MUCH value in talking
about 'caps' with respect to Direct3D 10/10.1.

> 4. Only the DDI version reported is 10.1

This is the only place a 'version number' really has any meaning. As an
application to check for Direct3D 10 support, you try to create a Direct3D
10 device. If it fails, you don't have it. To check for Direct3D 10.1
support, you try to create a Direct3D 10.1 device. If it fails, you don't
have it. The appliaction in a few specific cases might have to do a call to
CheckFormatSupport, but otherwise if you have a 10 or 10.1 device, you know
exactly what it does.

If you have SP1, you have DirectX 10.1. It came with SP1.so it doesnt matter that dxdaig says 10 i have 10.1DirectX comes standard with any Windows Vista, and DirectX 10.1 comes with Service PACK 1 for Windows Vista, but DirectX Diagnostics will still display DirectX 10.
If you want to know for sure, navigate to System32 folder, and look here:

If you have 10_1, then DX10.1 has been installed on to your system.ok then I have it because i have the 10_1 thanksKeep me in mind with future gift certificates lolololololNothing funny, or....I'll use Chrome to get you....LOL

how does it format a whole hard drive in 10 seconds!?

Quick Format. Vista does that by default, since a full format of today's ginormous hard drives can take an eternity...

Quote
lost all of my 18k songs

Since it was a quick format, you may be able to use Recuva or some other undeleter to get them back. Of course you'll need another hard drive to copy the recovered data to.

Bottom line: if you need to back up your data, have an external hard drive handy.

My router is a : Linksys wireless-G Broadband router (with 4 port switch) Model: WRT54G
Please help me! I dont know what to do.Do you need to set up ports?
If you are a dedicated user of the network, then, perhaps, but, you have to consider, the more ports you open, the more open your system is, and the more SUSCEPTIBLE to HACKING it becomes, especially if you dont keep the program OPENED.

If it works without the ports being forwarded, I would recommend leaving it alone.

Also, you need to forward the ports in your router if you want them to forward correctly on your computer.

Pleasant day to all, I got problem in shutting down my PC and laptop. I installed Vista OS in my laptop and desktop but the same problem i encounter. I cannot shutdown properly my PC. the Monitor and CPU got shutdown but the light of my mouse and keyboard have still light.

I don't think my CPU got shutdown because when i turn on again my laptop and Desktop have sign that i did not properly shutdown my PC. Please help me in this matter i am only a beginner in Installing OS.When did this start?

Have you tried a System Restore?Sound like a bios setting. Did you upgrade you bios? If you have a old motherboard You may need to upgrade it.Nope i did not do anything to my bios, i just install the OS in my PC. my desktop and laptop are all brand new so don't think i need to upgrade my motherboard. I think your right i only have problem in bios. but how i don't how to change settings..
I had a similar problem when I first used Vista until I learned that by default Vista’s power button on the desktop does not shut down the machine, but PUTS it into sleep mode. The power switch might also be configured for sleep mode instead of shut down. If power to the computer is disconnected while it’s in sleep mode you would get the improper shutdown warning next time you turn it on.

Open Control PANEL and look in Power Options. It has settings for whether the computer will sleep, hibernate or shut down. Or click the Start button on the desktop, look in the very bottom right corner of the menu and click the little arrow there. It will give shutdown options.

What is Vista power button?@Carbon Dudeoxide
its happen after my installation of vista. even i reinstall again still same.

@bromide
I check also my power options settings. But my settings in power button is in shutdown mode not in sleep mode. it is inside the power plan settings and choose what the power button does. do i am correct? but still the same.
@ Broni
By Power button I mean the “shut-down” button on the pop-up menu that appears when you click the Start button on the screen. I don’t know if that’s the proper name for it. It has a circle and vertical line icon on it.

@yocknics
Here is a link to an MS support article about BIOS-related problems, as xcharge50 suggested.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927393/en-us
You COULD search for other articles.

Start>Control Panel>Power options>Choose what the power buttons do
What do you have there?

@bromide
i will try this support. after i came back if this is successful.

@Broni
I try already this but it still the same. What happens, if you go this way:

Here is a link to another FORUM with a similar problem [ I hope that’s allowed]

He solved the problem by disabling his display driver.

disabling his display driver
...and then use what? a flashlight? The CPU turn in to sleep mode when i press the shutdown button. i check already the settings of power settings but still the same. I remember when i install my Vista OS i didn't change the clock of the bios. do u think it's possible the problem come from there?

Solve : Won't boot up.?

Answer»

New member so be gentle with me.
Windows Vista Home Premium installed on laptop with auto updates.
When boot up is started the SCREEN shows-
Configuring updates Stage 3 of 3 0% completed.
Do not turn off your computer.
After about 20 seconds this changes to-
Configuring updates Stage 3 of 3 83% completed.
do not turn off your computer.
It then changes to -
Shutting down--Which it does and then repeats the Configuring stages again and shuts down.
I have tried boot up in safety mode but this doesn't resolve the problem.
Can anyone out there help me. Please.
grandad

Hey grandad, I'm one too so it's just us oldtimers right? You do have a tricky problem. I have never saw updates start as soon as the operating system is turned on.............the only thing I have seen that would do that is the chkdsk operation, which is the check disk program that will only run if you tell it to and then the next time you reboot it will run, just like you have explained. Is it possible that you may have activated the check disk operation (being old makes me do things I too don't remember)? If not, then the next time you reboot, press the F2 key when it shows up in the top right corner of the screen. The other one will be F8. When you get to the F2 screen you will see a bunch of setting options. Most of the time you can't use the mouse so you will have to use the up and down arrows on the keyboard to access the different settings but be careful if you haven't done this before. If you have the option to turn off auto updates on that screen, then do that and if the screen you are seeing is some type of update then the change should keep the update from downloading. You will have to reboot after any changes you make. Try the F8 option also if the F2 won't help. Other than that I can't think of anything else to do. Let us know. The same sort of thing happened to me 2 months ago. Vista is often updated by Microsoft and if an update requires a reboot the update will finish during boot-up, as you have seen. I guess sometimes the update goes bad and prevents the computer from EVER starting.

I emailed my computer vendor [HP] support people.
They recommended starting in Safe Mode and doing a system restore:

“Go to Start - All PROGRAMS - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
OR
Press the WinKey + R to open the Run dialog box and type or paste rstrui.exe then press enter.”

If that didn’t WORK they said to go into System Recovery mode and initiate a Startup Repair. This procedure may vary according to your manufacturer.

Neither of these worked for me so I emailed Microsoft, who replied that because Vista was preloaded by HP, HP was responsible for fixing it. To make a long story short, Microsoft was nice enough to mail me a Vista Recovery Disk, which HELPED me restart the computer. [I can’t remember the exact steps.] It turned out Vista had never made any restore points after all, and would only boot by using the Recovery Disk after that, but at least I could recover my data and settings.
So, email your computer manufacturer for support. If you have a recovery disk, it might get you running again. But don’t use it without instructions; it could wipe out your data.
MS sent you a Vista CD for an HP machine ? ?

That's got to be a first...Hi Grandad,

I know that Vista does finish some of its updates during startup, I would also use the cd that came with your laptop, and see if that has any useful tools on it that can help you. You could also have a look on the manufacturers website to see if you can find a troubleshooting section. Thanks for the replies guys.I have tried all of the methods of recovery suggested without success so as Bromide has suggested, and it looks as though we both had the same problem,I shall contact HP and then ,if necessary, Microsoft.
Thanks again everyone.

Solve : No Windows Sound, No Sound Scheme, No Volume Icon, all other sound good.?

Answer»

I have read a bunch of threads on multiple sites and have found some similar problems but nothing exactly like this.
Here is what doesn't work:
-The windows sound on my computer does not work.
-I can GO into the sound setup where you pick which sounds for different tasks (like windows startup), and the play button to preview that sound is "grayed" out.
-Sound scheme is blank. If I set the sound scheme to the "Windows Default", click apply and then click ok to close that menu, then go back into the sound scheme menu it is blank again.
-There is no volume icon in my tray even though in the sound menu, it is clicked to be there.
-No sound at all in IE.
Here is what does work:-All other sound works fine such as playing the sound files for windows like "Ding.wav" using windows media player. Playing mp3's - no problem.
- Even if I go to the "Speech" icon in the control panel and listen to "Microsoft Sam" say "You have selected Microsoft Sam as the computer's default voice." That works fine.
I have downloaded NEW drivers for my sound device. I have also ran the "DXDIAG" and all the sound test on there worked fine.

Hope someone can help.

Tired and rambling,

Karl
Have you tried System Restore? No I haven't tried that. Give me a reminder on how to do that. If I remember correctly, I just put the systems cd that came with the computer in and I think "System Restore" is one of the options.Quote from: kbosse on February 17, 2009, 05:55:07 AM

No. Don't do that. that will wipe your computer.

For XP:

Start->programs->Accessories->System Restore

Vista:

Start->programs->Accessories->System Tools->System RestoreUnfortunately, no restore points from before the sound problem STARTED. This is my fault. Unless someone else has suggestions, I may just get all my info move from my main hardrive to my secondary hard drive and then FORMAT c:\ and re-install windows. I would thing this would take care of the problem.Start->Run "sndvol"

make sure all values are at proper levels. You don't say what KIND of sound card you have? Does it have any icons in Control Panel for settings? I've seen this before on calls where some sounds work and some don't. Look there.

Solve : I have to carry my computer case to college.....?

Answer»

I don't know , he said that to me and to my friends too!!

I do not trust this scenario at all...
He can't install it from his hard drive if it's an installed program.
You are putting yourself in a bad spot here.Fine, I will stick to my older versions, my CS3.

Thanks guys.isn't Adobe CS a Commercial application? As i said earlier Institutions have agreements with most MAJOR software vendors at a huge DISCOUNT...he should be able to SIMPLY provide you with the latest version on a CD at little or no cost whatsoever...
My Nephew got Vista Ultimate from the College Bookstore as a requirement for peanuts as it was a course requirement for whatever REASON...Yes that is true, We are provided Adobe Compact Suits because that's what we are learning, its a part of our studies, but I already had it so he said he'd give me a newer version, for FREE.

Not SURE where you'd get a laptop with XP anyhow... and not many laptops with premium are in your price range- so you're kind of stuck going with Basic.

Basic? The laptop here is a premium...

So was the first one JJ mentioned (And you were looking at).

But I'm not going to go back and edit my earlier posts just to appear right later on in the thread.I think that's totally fair considering it's MESSY carrying tomatoes around all the time...If my dad says yes, I get one.BR: DADDY CAN I HAVE A WAPTOP PWEEZ!

DAD: Sure, as long as you STOP wearing dresses.

LOL! just kidding BR I didn't post any review, because, it's just an average laptop.
First, I saw it, I was like....it's pretty good price for these specs, so I bought it.
So far, flawless....almost.
It must be something wrong with HP program for creating recovery disks.
It didn't work in my desktop, it didn't work with the laptop.
In both CASES, I had call HP, and they sent me free recovery DVDs.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 18, 2009, 04:30:14 PM
