Solve : What games can I play?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion dv8000 laptop which has plenty of RAM. I like 1st person shooter games-have played the 1st HALO, Far Cry, Call to Duty, I have been told that the problems I'm encountering with the NEXT versions of the game is due to my GRAPHICS card(ATI RadeonExpress 200M). I REALIZE That HALO requires VISTA. My question is: what games can I play or is there a chart that shows what the 200M is equal too?You can always check the game requirements.

This is a good website to test games on your laptop:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

Another thing, Halo 1 works on XP. Halo 2 is Vista-Only.A lot of games will run slowly or not at all on that laptop.
Halo and Far Cry will play on low/medium settings, Call of Duty (original) should be OK but CoD 2 upwards will struggle.
The 200M is quite a low-end card, roughly equivalent to the DESKTOP Radeon 9200, X300, or Geforce FX5200.
Integrated graphics, especially on laptops like yours, are not meant for gaming - if you want to enjoy these games, I recommend you find an alternative (console, or a better computer).
Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums.

Broni's post will suffice.

When advising people to use Everest, tell them EXACTLY what to do....sorry i havent done that in a good while an noticed that EVERY ONE does when this sort of thing happens its recommened.Processor=2.67 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
6 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Hard Drive= 40.01 Gigabytes usable hard drive capacity
10.58 Gigabytes hard drive free space.

The game I am playing at the moment is 'Azada' from Big Fish Games.

Can I also point out that the computer logs off for no apparent reason on SEVERAL occassions even if not playing a game. it would have been nice to mention that. Is that on a u3 sandisk? has your drives been scanned? You don't say how much RAM you have.I just noticed.Sorry but I am an OAP with only a limited knowledge of computers.not sure what that is. but did you do any scans recently?Quote

should show it during the post if you dont have the logo on.

Solve : Need to get rid of pop up?

Answer»

Yesterday I bought and installed a flash drive to hold my back up. Not having any ONE to help me I tried several things. At one point a pop up came and said "website wants to open web content using this program". The program was "Adobe Flash Player". I clicked on "allow" but nothing happened. After several clicks I gave up and clicked on "not allow". I finally got rid of it and ran a back up to my flash drive. Now every time I change web pages the pop up comes on. I can get rid of it by clicking on "not allow" 2 or 3 times. It stays away until I change pages and it is back. When I get rid of it everything seems normal. I have tried everything I can think of, including security scans, running CCleaner, and restarting in "safe mode". When I run a back up I get a message that I have an error.
I have WINDOWS Vista on an E Machine. Sorry to be so long but I need help. Thanks Bob Flash Removal Tool

DLoad and install this and run it...
When it finishes re-boot.
If you need Flash you can then GRAB a fresh copy and install it.Patio
Your suggestion got rid of the pop up. Thanks HOWEVER I still get a error message when I try to use the restore program. I even used the safe mode start but I got a message "Internet Explorer cannot display webpage". I noticed that the computer had not connected to the internet. Any suggestions on how to get the restore program to work? Thanks BobI'm unclear on what restore you are trying to run...
If the machine is not connecting to the web try turning off the modem and turn it back on...unplug it if you have to...then wait 2 minutes and try loading a web page again.Since you solved the pop up PROBLEM and this is a different problem let me drop this subject and start a new one. BobStay here...the above details may still be relevant...Sorry - I all ready made another post when I got your last post. Maybe the Admin. can combine the two posts. I don't KNOW how to move a post. About 5 minutes ago I made a back up and then tried to run a System Restore I got the same error message. I use the restore because I sometimes click the wrong thing and get in trouble just as I am now. Most times I can go back and start all over and am OK. Thanks for your time. Bob

"All important things"

That's everything. I have school papers, and everything.

then copy everything... THATS what I did with my jumpdrive. Then I did a Chkdsk /f which somehow FOUND 2GB of lost chains, which was odd given the drive was only 256MB. and then it only wrote 50MB worth of CHK files.

I actually managed to rebuild two of my larger projects my combining the CHK files with COPY, opening it with my text editor and searching through the file for portions of text in the 4KB of the file I wanted that I still had... needless to say it was a very time consuming process.

However, the difference here is that my files were corrupted(as opposed to mysteriously dissapearing), since my laptop at the time was a finicky little fellow and sometimes FROZE solid causing me to remove the battery to restart it- sadly this was usually while accessing the files on the drive, too - in your case it's the "move to folder" menu command. Is this when moving to or from your USB drive?

Another good strategy that I also followed for a time was periodically copying everything from the drive to my HD. Now I work from my HD on account of only needing to sync my laptop and desktop, and not really having to use foreign computers such as those that were at my school. Is this when moving to or from your USB drive?

Solve : Vista Keyboard Problem?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop model no. VGN-NS130D that was given to me by my sister, water was SPILLED on the keyboard. After letting it dry out I turned it on to find that everything works fine but the keyboard, touchpad, mute and AV mode buttons(they work 75% of the time.)

I ran hardware scan and says everyhing is fine, the driver is up to date.

Here's the thing when the cpu is in sleep mode the keyboard will work and TAKE it out of sleep mode.

Also you can hit F10, F8, F2 and every key works fine while in those modes.

If you put caps on the light comes on while booting up until windows begins to boot.

HELP this is annoying and Sony was no help.HELPYou might trying plugging in USB keyboard and mouse in the USB PORTS. This makes the system less PORTABLE, but useable for the time being. Connections could be shorted, even though the water has dried.

well they have improved the BOOT up vastly...it comes up fast..shutdows fast compared to vista...

it's basically "vista improved", I THINK they were embarassed by vista..and it was so late drivers were delayed....hey it's just another OS so it has good points/bad points like any OS....they do need(IMO) to work on their install though...ever since wnt 4 it is slow....mac installs in under 5 minutes on my x86 machine...MS is still around 10min or more...no need for that....wxp/vista/windows 7 all slow installs...I think the reason Installs have started taken longer is the increased hardware diversity. better to take a bit longer to install then to install an unbootable OS because a proper hardware scan wasn't performed and the wrong driver for the Primary IDE was installed, or something.Quote from: Broni on January 07, 2009, 09:29:12 PM

Solve : how to open XML documents in Vista?

Answer»

Hi

My friend just sent me an email containing a XML document - I opened it and it went to a window saying "to extract all files" I said OK and it went straight to IE (as default) and when I CLICKED open ...the file contains a lot of codes,..." On my old computer with XP I had no problem opening XML files...not with Vista. Can someone please tell me how to do it in Vista ...thanks

download a program called textpad and get the addon for xml from here http://www.textpad.com/add-ons/index.html

Textpad does cost but you can just get the evaluation version. Textpad should be on the same web site as the web site above.

hope that helps,

Tan_Zacome to think of it, I think you might be referring to the kernel, since windows has a kernel, and so does Linux and every other program.

Solve : Someone answer this question...?

Answer»

Ok... Got a notebook for X-mas. Dual core processor, real sweet gaming PC for a notebook, but i ran into... I was going to say problem, but it more of a question. look at this. (VISTA HOME x64, HP Pavilion dv5 BTW)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[emailprotected]/3175203799/

(Anyone MIND telling me how to actually display the image on the forum?, thanks)

The top is under Start -> Right click on Computer -> Manage -> In the window that opens, hit device manager

Under processors, i have TWO. I understand i have a Dual Core processor, but that should show up as one processor, shouldn't it? and the processors are labeled BOTH as dual core so... Do I have two processors? computer error?

On bottom, is a screenie of Task Manager.

This is even odder (to me, never owned a dual core [or quad for that matter] in my life) there are TWO sections under CPU usage history...

Bottom line... well question... is Do i have dual processors or not? Is that ENOUGH information? If not, Is there a way to check on my own?

Thanks in advance
ArtiA dual core will show up this way...
A Quad which i have shows up as 4 CPU's...
This is normal and has more to do with how Windows reports things than any flaw in your system.

no they may share cache...not always. google it...

usually they will have their own L1 Cache.
but will share the L2 Cache.

If a board supports two processors which both have on-Die L1 and L2 cache, then they're caches will be independent.

Difference being two Processors that are P3-s or up or K6-2's or up will both have independent L1 and L2 cache RAM whereas a Dualcore almost always shares the L2 cache while some models will have separate L1 caches for each processor to decrease the need to synchronize the CPU's ACCESS to the cache.

Solve : Need more space in D drive?

Answer»

Hi Bob. Let me reiterate a point mentioned several times in this thread. Drive D should not be used for storing your files. Here's why. Years ago, new computers usually came with a few CDs that contained Windows and all the original software that was installed on the computer when it was new. These CDs are very important if the computer owner ever needed to restore the system to its original CONFIGURATION; this could be due to problems with viruses, hard drive failure, etc. In recent years, computer manufacturers have stopped providing CDs, or DVDs, with new computers. In lieu of CD/DVDs, they put all the original software, including Windows, on a recovery partition, meaning a separate area on the hard drive, labeled as drive D. So, assuming your eMachines was issued from the factory in this way, drive D is your Recovery partition and should not be used by you for storing your files.

Several months ago I had a problem (I don't remember what the problem was) but the "D" drive was so full something I was trying to run would not run. Someway (I don't know how) the "D" drive was freed of space and everything was fine.
This makes me think you may have erased all the recovery files on drive D. If so, then it can no longer be used for system recovery if needed. Can you tell use what folders, i.e. folder names, you see on drive D? That should be a clue as to whether you erased the recovery files or still have them.

Did your computer come with Vista when new? If so, it surely has at least an 80GB hard drive. What size is the hard drive? If you open Computer, how many "drives" do you see shown there, under hard drives? Is it only C and D, or more? Soybean
Thanks for your reply. In my first post I said the "D" drive had - BOB-PC, Recovery, and MediaID.bin files. The only one I can do anything with is BOB-PC. When I do a back up I am asked if I want to put it in - hard disk, CD, or DVD. Since I don't have a CD or DVD it goes to the hard disk and is put in BOB-PC file.
The computer had Vista in it when I bought it new. When I look at the screen titled "computer" it shows:
BOB-PC (D:) 8.36 GB
Windows (C:) 103GB
DVD RW drive (E:)
CompactFlash (G:)
MS/MS Pro(I:)
SD/MMC (F:)
Smart Media/xD(H:)
I have never used the last 5 as I don't know what they are for. I should tell you I only use the computer for e-mail, playing jigsaw, checking weather, checking stock market reports, and a few other faverates. Any education you can give me will be welcome. Bob You computer has some small slots for different types of digital camera memory cards, right? That's why you see:
CompactFlash (G:)
MS/MS Pro(I:)
SD/MMC (F:)
Smart Media/xD(H:)

I don't know whether you know that you could buy BLANK DVD disks at any office supply store and backup, or "burn", files to the DVD. Your DVD drive may also be able to burn to CDs, not only DVDs.

Your main issue seems to be that you want to backup files to some location other than drive C, and that's good thinking. Your C drive has plenty of free space. One or more additional partitions could be added and that/those partition(s) could be used for short-term backup. But, since hard drives are mechanical devices and can fail, backing up important files, photos, etc. to some external media such as CD, DVD, flash drive, or an external hard drive is much better and safer than keeping everything on your internal hard drive.

Actually, you could create backup files on C; it's just better file MANAGEMENT if you can separate backup copies of files somewhere other than C. You could create a folder named Backups or whatever or use it for backed up files. But, again, this still leaves your important files vulnerable to hard drive failure or risk if your system gets infected with viruses and other malware.

If you still want partition drive C to have one or more separate, additional partitions, Windows Vista has a feature called Drive Shrink which can be used to do that. For information on this, see: How to Shrink and Extend NTFS Volumes in Windows VistaSoybean
Thanks for the information. When I do a back up the choice given to put it is either Bob-PC (D:) or DVD RW Drive (E:). I have resisted going to a DVD because I don't have and I don't know to use one. I guess the best thing for me to do is to get a DVD and learn how to use it. Thanks You guys that write on this web site are helping me a lot as I have no one else to help me with problems. BobYou might also get a flash drive. They keep coming down in price. Here's an 8GB Kingston flash drive that can be bought now for $17.78, including shipping: Kingston 8GB DataTraveler USB 2.0 Flash Drive - DTI/8GB; I'd guess that's plenty of capacity to store your files. If you don't want to buy something online, flash drives are sold at all office supply stores (Staples, OfficeMax, etc.) and electronics stores such as Best Buy.

A flash drive simply plugs into a USB port on your computer. You probably have at least two of these ports on front of your computer. Soybean
After reading about a flash drive I think that is what I will get. There are two ports in the front of my computer which I can use. My only question is how to use it. I can get it at Best Buy and I guess they will guide me. Notice in my previous post that I listed 5 unused places (I guess they are called files) - one of which apparently took a DVD. I am uncertain if a flash drive will work. If I plug a flash drive in one of the ports what will happen. I don't want you to list the whole program but just the general idea. I hope my question is plain enough. Thanks Bob When you plug a flash drive into a USB port, you'll hear an AUDIBLE sound which normal. And, if you open My Computer, you'll see another drive listed there, which will be the flash drive. Windows will assign a drive letter to it. Depending on how your settings for viewing My Computer are setup, the flash drive will also be categorized under Removable Disk.

If you get a flash drive, a certain procedure should be followed when disconnecting them. Here's a reference: SAFELY REMOVE YOUR FLASH DRIVEAt you age you get rid of the stuff you don't need and give it to use youngsters.
Upload some of the junk you don't need anymore off hard Drive and let the rest of us have it.

Then You get more space in D drive.

I am 70 and looking forwar to many years of looking at your stuff!

soybean
I got a flash drive and am learning how to use it. I have a back up on it and deleted the back ups on my (D:). This increased the free space on (D:) from 10% to 20% so I am headed in the right direction. Thanks so much.

You are right. Today I am 87. I can remember the depression which the people helping me with my problems can't. As for getting rid of stuff, I got rid of lots of money in the stock market lately!! Bob Quote

if you still have your computers running for a good while then you dont have to worry about a new computer...

but as Broni, BC, and Geek said. D drive, NO TOUCHY!

Solve : Vista stuck at log off?

Answer»

Hello folks.

New to the boards. Appreciate any help I can get.

So, yesterday I was shutting down the Inspiron 1521 on which I run Vista. It said it had some automatic updates. FINE. It ran them. But then it HUNG at the "logging off" window.

I let it sit for hours that way then finally pressed the case power BUTTON. It shut off.
On reboot it does the "resuming" thing and goes right back to the logging off screen.

I'm trying unsuccessfully to f8 my way into safe mode at the moment...

Has anybody seen this before?

Thanks!

Solve : downloads disapear as soon as completed?

Answer»

are you ready for this lol. I got the OTMovIt just fine and the prevx. and did a scan it didn't find any malware but i saved the log. Then went to get HIJACKTHIS and am having trouble saving it ......What happens when you try to save it?it just disappears like it was doing before. I tried saving it like i did the others as one would normally. I tried having it open in another application. I tried saving it into a zipped file. None of it worked. Are you using IE?

Re-register MsiExec

  • Go to Start > Run
  • Type or Copy and Paste the following:
    • MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER then hit enter.
  • Then again Start > Run
  • Now type or Copy and Paste the following:
    • MSIEXEC /REGSERVER then hit enter.
    .
No visible change will take place. Try to install/uninstall again.

Okay I did ththe reregister steps (but I didn't install/uninstall ie.) I makes no difference which browser and doing the unregister did not change it,. I still cannot save the OTMovIt I am in ie browser nowoops I mean the HijackThis is the one that i can't get to downloadokay I finally got it saved as a zip file from BleepingComputer site/I'm confused.

What is happening when you try to download?have followed your instructions , this is the report from MoveIt:
however I went to a site to test and still cannot save downloads as i should be able to it let me save the picture file but not the rar file i downloaded.

let me see if I can explain it better than I did on the post before last. If I try to donwload from sites that the link is not directly to the file I want, but to another site holding the file, for example:

but if I find a site that the download link is a direct .zip or .rar file (like stove.zip)
then I can open and save it by using winzip new file and pasting the direct web link into it.

so I searched for the MoveIt til I found a site I could get it in the zip form direct from the web page. I wasn't cursing LOL the site is "BleepingCompute"Yea I'm familiar with BleepingComputer.

This is an issue I've never seen before so I'm not sure how to attack it.

I put these two files into a zip file so you can get to and download them easily (hopefully). Just unzip them and run as described in the instructions.

http://www.filedropper.com/repairpermissions

1)
* Download and run fixacl.exe

* It only takes a second and then move on to FixPolicies.

2)
* DOUBLE click on FixPolicies.exe to run it.
* Click on Install. It will create a folder named FixPolicies on your desktop.
* Open the FixPolicies folder.
* Double click on Fix_policies.cmd to run it. A Command Prompt will open and close quickly. This is normal.
* Reboot your computer after it runs
* This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can SAFELY run the tool again.

* Note: Some malware will block the running of this tool. So if you cannot run Fixpolicies, then, rename the exe file to something like fixtool.exe and then run it.

You might need to restart the computer and then see if you can download normally.

Can't get them because the link doesn't point to a zip I can copy and paste into my winzip. The computer just won;t save it
Try from here. http://rapidshare.com/files/198632995/Repair_Permissions.zip.htmlno luck OK I'm adding them as attachments here.

Solve : no "Selection" option for printing?

Answer»

At the top Right in Yahoo Mail there is a PRINT icon....works here.
Have her try thatThanks Patio, you pointed in the right direction. It is a two part solution though.

Use the print link as you said, but, when the print dialog box comes up you have to close it, reselect what you want to print, and THEN GO File>Print and the selection option is AVAILABLE.

Not quite the pain of cut and paste into Word, but it will work.

Thanks to all for answers.I had this problem and found it was related to installing a new printer. There was an option on the File MENU that had to be deselected to allow the Selection option to BECOME available. Just so you know.

Solve : Fresh HD can't install OS?

Answer»

I'll start from the beginning. I bought a new computer...few weeks later the HD died. The company sends me a new HD, which shows in BIOS, but I can't install anything on it. The first set of recovery CDs they sent me were blank. The new set isn't working either. They now want me to send it in, but will charge me shipping. I think this is totally stupid since I've had the computer less than a month. So, I found an old copy of xp pro laying around. I am trying to install that and this time the disk actually runs, but I get Boot ready then a blinking _. Any suggestions?Whose HDD ? ?
Did you recieve a CD with it to prepare the drive for an OS install ? ?
If not travel to the drive manuf. site and DLoad the utilities and follow the info on creating a bootable CD to prep the drive. Its a Gateway fx 6800 with a western digital HD. They did send recovery disks with the new HD they sent me. They don't work. I have a copy of windows XP Pro, but that won't run either. Ultimate Boot CD does run so I know it isn't my cd rom. What utilities should I be trying to download?WD's tools are called Data Lifeguard...available at their site.
Follow the instructions for creating a bootable CD.Thank you for your help. I'm not sure of the exact HD that I have. All the information I could find was SATA 750gb 7200rpm from western digital...sooo I downloaded the closest one I could find on that site. When I run the CD I get the following:

**Error: No CD-ROM drive found, please check power or cable
**Error: IDE CD-Rom device driver NOT installed!!

A:\>echo off
NWCDEX.EXE Version 2.81 CD-ROM file handler
Copyright blah blah
Driver not found: 'generic'
A:\NWCDEX.EXE requires a Driver name to be specified.
Invalid drive Specified
Command or filename not recognized
(the above line 3 more times)
A:\>

I really appreciate all the help!Data LifeGuard DOS

Use the instructions this file is a bootable CD.
After burning it to CD put it in and re-boot the machine and follow the instructions for prepping the drive...Ok, I downloaded and burned the immage. When booted from the cd I get the same error as I POSTED before. Was this Gateway shipped with
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition with Service Pack 1,

You might not ever be able to install XP on it if they do not give you all the right drivers. The machine may have been built for 64 bit Vista only. Anyway, make them give you a good HDD with Vista for the machine loaded on it. You paid for a 64 bit system and you should not have to do the REPAIR work.

Get after them before they go out of business. Yes, it was. It is still under warrantee, but they've been kinda jerking me around...called Better Business Bureau...and want me to pay to ship the computer to them. I already had an XP cd so I thought I would install it, but I guess I have no CHOICE except to send it in my Toshiba SATELLITE L300(which was also built for Vista 64-bit only) didn't have any drivers on the Toshiba site but it works fine with no problems in XP. Just a matter of finding the right drivers from each respective hardware manufacturer. Not even the disks they sent me work and those are for vista. With those it's like the CD-Rom won't even play them. Then it's best you return it for a working machine...
When you get the new one stop by and we can help you STEP by step setup a dual-boot setup with Vista and XP...

Solve : Windows Vista Ultimate is behaving strangely?

Answer»

I have a desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate.

A few weeks ago My hard drive failed. Without it I was unable to do ANYTHING with my computer. I had two drives but the one that failed was the one with Windows.

I thought if I could reinstall Windows on the remaining disc I might get going again. The windows disc I have refused to start. I don't know why.

I removed the failed drive and went to a 'computer store' in my town and lay my case before the technician. He SOLD me a restore disc (that's what he called it) It was a copy with 'Windows Vista SP 3 written on it with a magic marker. For this I paid $5.

My machine booted right up with the restore disc and went through an install routine. It did ask for a product code but since I had none it went ahead and loaded. I had a working computer again with Windows Vista. Since that time I have enjoyed a computer that behaves like new. I sent the defective drive to the maufacturer who is sending a replacement. One nagging little question:

From time to time Windows will ask me if I want to activate windows...What's this about and how should I proceed?

Thanks for any suggestions. He sold you an unauthorised version of Vista...just wait...it gets more fun as Vista continues to randomly disable User features.
They're getting really good at this.
Have you considered a phone activation ? ?
After all if your legit then your legit...Thanks for your reply.

I suspected as much. Another question:

I had installed Tax Cut on my one drive. I copied it to another partition hoping to confine my tax files to a separate spot. It refuses to open, responding with an error message: 'Side by side configuration wrong.' Is this related to the Vista copy?

Your advice is greatly appreciated. You can't simply copy a program and have it run PROPERLY...
It needs to be re-installed.Thanks for your response.
I want to buy a good partition manager and also a better IMAGE copier. I recall READING about Norton Ghost and Partition Magic. Are these still viable?
What do you reccomend?

Thanks for any advice.Paragon offers a FREE partition program...does everything Partition Magic does.
I Recently finished testing this which reminds me i still need to write a review.

As far as imaging goes i'm an Acronis True Image guy myself....have been for Years.Yep .... another vote here for Acronis True Image.

IIRC Partition Magic does not work in Vista, so save your cash.

Solve : Vista Hangs during install?

Answer»

Hello all: I replaced the hd in a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop.
When re-installing Vista Ultimate 32, install loads files ok but hangs when it reboots to hd.
Tried known good drive same thing.
Formatted drive and tried to install XP; SETUP could not find drive.
Drive shows up in bios.
Anyone? The A200 really doesn't work with Vista Ultimate very well.
It JUST BARELY MEETS the MINIMUM requirements. I strongly recommend not putting Vista Ultimate on there.

As for Windows XP, is this a genuine CD?

Also, what is the drive formatted as?

Solve : password problems?

Answer»

First of all, let me say that I'm not trying to break into anyone's computer. I'm presently enrolled in Malware Removal University and I don't want to get booted out for trying to bypass a password. Here's the deal. My friend purchased a Dell computer from this guy. She said she was able to get into the computer twice while trying to set up her dial-up network. The third time she RAN into a password protection. She consulted me and I told her to get the password from the guy who sold it to her. She talked to him and he gave her a password. I tried that one but it was incorrect. She talked to him again and he gave her two more. He also gave her two recovery disks as well as a Windows Vista upgrade disc. I figured if I ran the recovery disks it would take the computer back to square one. There's nothing on the computer that my friend wants to save anyway. She just wants to get it working. Every time I put in the recovery disk it takes me back to the password program. Is this normal? Why was she able to access the computer twice before she started having problems? She put the password on it. Obviously by accident.

I take it this is a BIOS password? If so simply remove the CMOS battery for a while- SAFE bet being about 20-30 minutes. then place it back and restart. any BIOS password should be gone.

if it is a OS prompt then it obviously isn't booting from the CD< so check the cables, power, boot order and so frth for the drive. She may have accidently put a password on it. That's probably why the passwords he's giving her are not working. I checked the BIOS and it's not a BIOS password. I also checked and it's booting from the CD recovery disk. I even tried my XP CD and it started booting from the CD but came back to the password prompt. I'll try removing the battery but I doubt it will do any good. Perhaps I could remove the HD, slave it to another computer and reformat it. Tried booting into Safe Mode? If no one put a password on the Adminstrator profile then all you need to to is choose it and hit Enter.

Alan <>< HD might have a password perhaps- it can boot using a CD, but most OSes on the CD inspect the hardware, including the HD, at which point the PC is showing the prompt?

Although it isn't easy to just Suddenly put a HD password on it...

If you have trouble accessing the drive from a different PC, this could be it. unfortunately HD passwords aren't easily removed.Booting in Safe Mode just leads me to the password prompt and it shows the previous owner's name so I don't think it was anything accidental. It looks like I'll have to find someone who can test a SATA drive.I removed the battery and disconnected the power cord for almost 20 hrs. Now, when I boot, I get a diskette drive 0 seek failure. My boot sequence is CDRom drive and hard drive. There is no floppy drive. I changed the battery but I still get that error. I know the CD drive is working because when I insert a disk, it gives me a "booting from CD" message and then along comes the password prompt. If there is no floppy drive, is it set as such in the BIOS setup screens?Well, I'm making progress. I was able to get Vista re-installed and no more problems with a password. Now the only problem is I get that "diskette drive 0 seek failure" when I boot. I press F1 and Vista loads normally. The boot sequence is CD Rom and then the hard drive. There is no floppy drive but when I open Windows Explorer, there's the A drive listed along with the C, D and E drives. Help please. Oh yes. I can't connect to the net using the dial-up modem. Is it possible this modem has gone bad? Everything looks ok in device manager and it SAYS it's running normally. Did you disable the floppy in BIOS?

If you right click on the A drive and select Properties, what do you see?Yes, I disabled the floppy drive in BIOS. Here's my boot sequence:
1.Onboard CD-ROM drive
2.Bootable Hard drive
Non-intergrated NIC ( not present)
USB-FDD (not present)
USB-ZIP ( not present)
USB-CDROM (not present)
Onboard floppy drive ( not present)

HDD boot sequence:
1. Sata-0
2. Bootable Add-In cards

I disabled the A drive in windows and if finally disappeared from " My Computer" but I'm still getting the "diskette drive 0 seek failure". It's not stopping me from starting the computer but I don't want to give this computer back without fixing it.

UPDATE: I finally got rid of that annoying error on startup. Just for anyone having the same problems with their Dell computers. I went into the BIOS and I had to alter the disk drives as well as the boot sequence. That did the trick for me.

Solve : Asked to Select OS upon Startup, but I should only have one?

Answer»

P.S. - That 8MB partition is auto-created to handle DYNAMIC disk and other config information. If/when a disk is converted to dynamic, information regarding the configuration and any dependencies (e.g. software RAID) are stored on the hard disk at the end. This is how a drive can be moved from one dynamic disk array to another and be recognized as foreign drive.

Quote from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457110.aspx#EGAA

A dynamic disk is a physical disk that contains dynamic volumes. Dynamic disks provide features that basic disks do not. For example, use dynamic disks if you need to:

* Increase the size of a volume by extending the volume onto the same disk by using unallocated space that is not contiguous. You can also EXTEND a volume onto other dynamic disks.

* IMPROVE disk input/output (I/O) performance by using striped volumes.

Dynamic disks offer greater flexibility for volume management because they use a hidden database to track information about dynamic volumes on the disk and about other dynamic disks in the computer. Because each dynamic disk in a computer stores a replica of the dynamic disk database, Windows XP Professional can repair a corrupted database on one dynamic disk by using the database on another dynamic disk.

The location of the database is determined by the partition style of the disk.

On MBR disks, the database is contained in the last 1 MEGABYTE (MB) of the disk.

ElwoodJD - The big guns arrived and I hope you have at last got a response which satifies you. I still advise that you delete the last line of your Boot.ini file but the decision is entirely yours. Good luck.

Gold - thankyou for your input and the explanation of the 'rogue' partition.

Solve : start menu items freezes?

Answer»

Hello,
I use windows XP pro.
Recently, I noticed that when I point the mouse on the ICON of some directory of the start menu program list, the directory seems to freeze a number of seconds, and then it opens. What is even more strange is that if I have already opened some directory of the start menu program list, then it opens quickly in susequent tries. What can it be?

thx.Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")OK.
Processor: AMD Sermpron +2800
Ram: 960MB, 1.61 GH
Disk C: used space 11.8 GB, free space: 3.88 GB
Disk D: used space 14.5 GB, free space: 38.9 GBBy pointing the mouse, do you mean actually clicking on any program listed in Start menu?
Do you have similar delays, when, opening, moving, copying, pasting things in Windows Explorer, or anywhere else?By "pointing the mouse", I mean only pointing the arrow on the directory icon, what normally make it DISPLAYED (I don't mean clicking on the icon, despite this doesn't work too, when the start menu freezes).
I haven't remarked such delays when opening windows explorer, but my computer seems to be globally slower than in the past.Download HijackThis:

Solve : Changing your IP Address for Windows Vista?

Answer»

I've been having problems trying to change my IP Address for Windows Vista. I've typed in the command prompts but they do not work. For example, i've typed in ipconfig /release or ipconfig/ renew for specific adapters. The message that I receive is "The requested operation requires elevation" and I am not SURE what that means. Can someone plz help me?? Thanks in advance Moved to DOS section.

I'm not sure, but I think you have to start Command Prompt as Administrator.
Right Click it and click Run As Administrator.Carbon is right.
You need to run "cmd" as administrator.

"no operation can be performed on local area connection while it has its media disconnected."
"An error OCCURRED while releasing interface Loopback-Pseudo-Interface 1..the system cannot find the file specified."

In general what I want to do is change my link-local IPv6 address, IPV4 address, my subnet mask, and my gateway for my wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection. Is this possible?? If so, COULD someone plz explain it to me? thanks Do you have any connection at all?
What is the exact problem here? Why would you want or need to change your IP address?Hmmmmm......That's a very valid question....yes i do have a wireless connection, but I'm having problems with accessing some websites..including my email and things of that nature which I previously could access. It says the page is blocked and access is denied for me to view that content and someone told me that if I changed my IP address that should solve the problem. Are you running a firewall ? ?

if from your router goto the router setup(that's where they come from) and change values(ip/base address ie gateway/etc.) there...if directly from an isp(ie verizon wireless) contact the isp or goto their forums to learn how to change them...

Solve : vista display languageeas?

Answer»

hello

i need to change the display language (MENU, WELCOME screen, wizards languages) for my vista HOME VERSION from English to Arabic

i have read about the enterprise version, and it doesn't apply to my home version please help meUnfortunately...

Windows vista MUI (Multilingual User Interface) language packs lets Windows Vista ULTIMATE and Enterprise edition users to translate and change the display language for vista user interfaces. Thus they can have their windows user interfaces (UIs) TRANSLATED into their own language for menus and dialogs, with MUI (Multilingual User Interface) language packs. so you are telling me that there is no other choice but to re install my vistaWhat I'm saying, you can't do this with Home edition.
You can either upgrade to Ultimate edition, or install Arabic version of Home edition.

[attachment deleted by admin]You have a beast of a computer, don't let GTA4 get you down.

See this link: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/grand-theft-auto-gta4-pc,6666.html
Be sure to check the support page mentioned in the article for driver versions.

Low performance is caused by one or more aspects of your configuration not being expected and therefore not utilized correctly by GTA4 code. That's what is happening, plain and simple.

Unfortunately, Rockstar couldn't make a compatible PC version the 1ST time, there are just too many factors and config options in the home PC market today. That, and I believe that GTA4 was programmed for standalone videogame consoles, then ported to the PC, but don't quote me. They built the game to run on future hardware without stabilizing the current build for current specs.

Try dual booting Windows XP 32bit or Windows Vista 32bit and run GTA4 under that OS with all updated drivers. Try a fully updated GTA4 with different versions of your video driver under all different OS's.
Basically, try anything while you wait for a new GTA4 patch or updated video drivers.
I don't think that Rockstar can or will do anything for your individual case...Here's a link to a guide instructing you how to completely remove your nVidia drivers so you can reinstall them fresh and be sure that no 'nasty' files are hanging around. After all you've done, this has got to be worth it, right?

http://www.overclock.net/faqs/12466-info-nvidia-driver-cleaning-guide.htmlHey thanks alot! Now you are someone who cares. I APPRECIATE that, again it is just one game...and for hope sake i have maxed out the following:

Far cry 2..Burnout paradise..Crysis..COD 5...and Mirrors edge all with above 40 fps! So yes lets both keep are hope.

For now i wait for a patch...in a month or so ill try the os changes and driver changes if none come out.

thanks again.

Solve : gaming, problems?

Answer»

hi i have a question. ... my computer is on the fritz, its always on teh fritz.

ok- my OS is Windows Vista
so whenever i want to play a online game, anyone that has to connect to a server to play (Wow, Shayia,Swiftkit) it wont connect. UNLESS i go to connection settings and disconnect, then diganose and repair, can someone who knows of this problem help me.... my gaming works fine if i do that, i just would like to know why i have to do this to play, and possible ways to fix it.When you first start the game, and try to view servers to JOIN, are you given a list of servers, or a connectivity error?

How long have you waited for a connection before disconnecting diagnosing and repairing?

Do you run p2p programs in the background while playing?

Do you use uPnP or port forwarding or both or neither?im given a connectivity error,
and it always stays at the connection error screen untill i disconnect then reconnect my connection

no, i dont run anything while playing except the game im trying to play
last question, i dont know what port forwarding is....

thanks for such a quick replyOk, well we will skip port forwarding for now since repairing your connection fixes your problem temporarily.

Do you experience connection issues with the internet or only with games?
Do you connect to the internet through a modem or a router connected to a modem; wired or wireless?nope only when trying to use MMORPGS, where you need to update the game EX. Wow, shaiya

and im through a wired connection, on a linksys routerMy only suggestion is to try forwarding ports through your router. There are the ports that WoW and other games use to communicate while playing and downloading updates that your router and/or FIREWALL will block by default.

Visit this link: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

Find your router in the list and click it. You will see an alphabetical list of programs and games that commonly need open ports for proper operation. Find World of Warcraft and follow the instructions to forward ports through your router. Do the same for any other games if this fixes your problem.

Keep this spot updated.

I'll try this out, but i gotta WAIT untill i change the power supply in my computer, it died. thanks, if it works, I Shall inform the public.

Solve : safe mode with networking?

with windows vista i had audio problems ..hence i reinstalled the audio drivers .it worked for me but the next day i get message windows could not load normally ..hence i did system restore USING vista dvd ...but to no effect .........i tried F8 ..but that doesnt seem to work ..i am lookin for commandline ways so that if i gfet into safe mode with command prompt and then with a particular command i can make the computer restart system in safe mode /
THANKS Ok let me see if I understand you correctly.

You are LOOKING for command lines to USE so that if you get into safe mode with command prompt you will be able to restart your comp in safe mode I don't want to tell you how to troubleshoot your problem, but it SOUNDS like you may be trying an approach that is more difficult than your situation.

Let me state your problem and you fill in my blanks:

Your Windows Vista system works without any problems
One day, you don't hear any audio, you check the settings and can't find any problems there, so you reinstall your audio drivers.
That fixes the problem, so you listen to music, browse the internet, maybe watch a movie, and shut down the computer for the night.
Next day, Windows can not load normally.
You use the Vista DVD to perform a system restore. This has no effect whatsoever.
You still cannot boot to Windows Vista.

Solve : Vista Mouse Pointers?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me why I can't set any other mouse theme other than Windows Aero default? I've been trying to set my classic Windows Whistler mouse pointers and it works but than resets after a restart. After telling windows to use it again and restarting I got a blue screen of death, then it resets back to default.

Microsoft: "You will adapt to using the new Vista style and only the new vista style."

Me: "but I want groovy Whistler mouses."

Microsoft: "blasphemer! You will use Vista Styles or die!"

Me: "*censored*!?"

Microsoft: "BSOD!"

Me: "Noooo not a Blue Screen Of Death!"Whistler themes are written for Windows classic...not Aero.
Sorry
One or the other.

Yell at the Author.silly ppl! whistler themes are for luna!

Aren't they? Whistler WAS after all the code-name for XP...I'm not using a theme. I mean that I have selected different .ani files and set them up as a profile. Are you saying that Vista no longer uses .ani files for pointers?help?Vista has many options for pointer schemes. Have you looked at them?HUH??? sigh. The Aero theme I assure you does NOT use ANI files. recall that ANI files were used since Microsoft Plus for windows 95. a few graphical enhancements have occured since then, I am sure.

Jesus that was difficult... (like trying to get blood out of a stone for those who didn't get the picture). Now, why is it then that I can use the cursors until I restart? And why is it that under browse for cursors I get the automatic file type association .ani or .cur?Aero overrides any of these choices. Some .ani cursors from a Windows Whistler demo.

Wasn't this question answered back in reply #1? OK it has become painfully obvious now that no matter what I change, I can not use .ani cursors any more. This is due (I think) to a security exploit of the .ani files in Vista. So from what I can gather their fix was to just reset any files associations to do with .ani's on a restart.

So anyone know of software that I can use to convert my .ani's to .cur's?

Solve : Windows Vista Upgrade error?

Answer»

Ok. for starters i've been reading across the forums for hours trying to get a solution for this problem. This site seemed to have the most intelligent answer to the majority of problems so here goes........ I was attempting to fix a computer for a friend. He had a usually easy problem to fix. He was just getting his solid background and no icons.... i usually just do a clean install of windows if there is no VALUABLE info on the HD. But i didn't have me XP cd with me and all i had was a vista UPGRADE and he said that would be fine so i ran in from inside windows and i keep getting this message "Disc Read Error Press Ctrl+ALT+DEL to RESTART". Anyone have any ideas.......
Thanks,
DanielFirst of all, see, if that Vista DVD is readable on another computer.
If so....

Solve : no problem just curious if one is developing?

Answer»

As for "Who crashed", you may keep it. It's very small program, so it doesn't take space.OK will do and if have any difficulties will run and post the results. Guess this winds up the thread. Thanks once more for following through.

Just got to thinking is Patch Tuesday the same as all the updates that MS sends out? I update regularly WHETHER Tuesday or not. Not sure if updates and Patch Tuesday are one and the same.

Will keep track of the second Tuesday of each month to see what I can learn Quote

if updates and Patch Tuesday are one and the same
Yes.OK thanks will be on watch out especially re Patch Tuesday.Hi

1.
Viewing events is safe - no damage can be done.
Mostly they will be information.
If the computer has or is developing a fault then you may observe some yellow warnings or red errors.
If these are at the start of the day it could explain start-up difficulties.

For advice on any event, right click and select properties;
in the next window click the button with two sheets of paper to copy all the data to clipboard,
then Ctrl V will paste the information into a Forum post if you want help.

2.
Have you considered Firefox ?
I am one of many that consider it far safer than I.E.
In the bottom right corner is a button to make it imitate I.E.
Firefox will coexist with I.E., so you can choose which version of I.E. to retain for those hazardous sites (such as your school) that insist you run the hazards of Active X.

Regards
Alan
I looked at my Event Viewer and was staryellow tled to see in the first log and last log many many warnings and red errors!

Not sure whether I should be worried or not. And anyway to learn more about how to avoid such do you know?

Will try Firefox and see how it goes. I know when I tried it some time ago got rather weary of switching back and forth back and forth because some of my stuff I was working on wanted IE, especially if someone sent me something in an email to look at. But for security measures maybe should give Firefox another try.Am trying Firefox but got no further with it than IE6 re accessing the COLLEGE computer for stats input. In fact had to use my Administrator Account rather than the User Account to even open up the college mail program that I use. Even then it would not work re getting me to a class roster spreadsheet. Guess it is the school computer and the way they have it configured that demands IE7 Pull a me then. Go Opera web browser.

http://www.opera.com/nondaj

When my event log has a Red warning I worry.
When there is no warning I worry that it is hiding something ! !

A red warning "Ftdisk, data may have been lost" caused me to take action,
my daughter now has to follow strict rules before plugging her IPOD into the USB ports of my computer.

Many people never bother to look at the event logs.
Some of them live one day at a time and one BSOD at a time ! !

I like to have a look once a week to be sure of "normality"

This is how I investigate an error :-
A SYSTEM error at 20/01/2009 18:43:32
I look for interesting events at related times in the other logs.
The Application log shows at 18:43:22 MsiInstaller caused event 11724
I right click and find that PerfectDisk 2008 was removed successfully.
I now remember that it was upgraded, and obviously the old version was removed without Windows prior approval ! !
Windows surprised me at how good a job it did,
it noticed something that might have been bad (e.g. a virus deleting anti-virus) and it put an "error" in the log.
(I miss the old days of Windows 9x when warnings went on the screen, but I guess M.$ tech support could not keep up with all the phone calls when customers knew how bad their computers were ! !)

Had I not found a valid cause, I would have INVESTIGATED further as follows :-
1. Select the error; sshot-39
2. Double click to see its properties; sshot-40
3. Click on the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. which was above the hand. This launches the Help and Support center.
I do not know if I have had too many security patches, or if it always works so BADLY for everyone, but for me the Help and Support Center does not know why I woke it up.
Once it is awake I click on the link a second time, and then Help and Support knows what is wrong and it gives me sshot-41

As you can see from the slide bar, it is like an iceberg, only the top 10% is VISIBLE. By sliding down there is a lot more information, and if that is not enough it can link you to M.$ Knowledge Databases.

The first stage is to investigate a problem as above.
That will often show unusual but reasonable causes (e.g. user actions such as upgrading software).

I think if you have many errors and warnings upon start-up then it would be prudent to investigate.

You might find an error due to the Internet Connection not being available when ESET wants a virus signature update - something changed on my internet and for several days no updates arrived, I had to reconfigure ESET to update once per hour instead of only at start-up.

If an error really worries you and you want advice, sshot-40 has 3 buttons centre right,
just click the bottom one and all the information is placed in your clipboard ready for Ctrl' V to paste into a forum post for help.

If I.E.7 is essential for school, so be it.
You should never have any problem having Firefox or Opera as preferred alternatives for normal non-school work.

You may be able to use all 3 browsers simultaneously - but look out for BSOD's ! !

Best wishes
Alan

[attachment deleted by admin]OK have copied your response and when have time will study same and watch the management area more closely knowing a little bit more about it now. Not sure how long a thread is permitted to run but am sure I will have many more questions re this matter. If not suppose some moderator will so inform me.

I again am having differing concerns about my logon windows sequence. It changes is what concerns me. This AM the PC booted up as such:

black screen and wait wait wait for next screen ( OR sometimes I get
a black screen with a flickering cursor
then black 'screen of choice' between XP and Safe mode (it goes so fast cannot
really get a handle on this one)
next the Win. Logo screen with little rolling marbles (?)
on occasion another black screen with a wait so long I think I may have to reboot
next a blue screen, short wait for the little logon window for name and password
then desktop appears (sometimes icons snap to immediately); other times takes quite a few seconds before icons appear

Where the sequence changes is in the beginning five screens; some being omitted others coming in differing sequence.

So think this management operation now that I am aware of it will be helpful to me after I study and learn how to use it.

Thanks for all your support and information - off to carry through now.
It may be sufficient to look at the first red warning of the day when the computer is switched on. That may well reveal a problem that causes all the following warnings and the chaotic start-up.

AN EASY ALTERNATIVE.
Take home an I.T. support guy from your school.
What can be a tedious and long process of selecting and copying and pasting and posting and waiting for the next step and and and etc.
is so very easy for some-one familiar with computers and sat at your keyboard.

You might have to buy him a beer,
or he might volunteer if the I.T. manager authorises his paid overtime for improving your ability to supply school reports via software that has to comply with I.T. department requirements.

Regards
Alan
You have to be kidding about an IT guy coming home from our school to help. They half the time do not return phone calls when called and half the time they are not even in their office when you do call. If the latter happens one can get shuttled around and around from person to person who knows next to nothing about the programs.

Some times I think there must be a bunch of no nothings in the department because each semester they are changing something on their PC programs. They are worse than MS fiddling around with updates or putting out Versions of windows that fail to do the job really well and so another version comes. XP was doing fine, then Vista rather failed I hear and now another version is in the wings!

Personally I remember Win3.1 and loved that format.

Solve : PROBLEMS WITH INSTALLING MY HP 722C IN VISTA?

Answer»

Ok, I have spent the most of the day and night trying to find a work-around to use my HP 722c printer with my new Dell XPS 420 64-bit VISTA. It looks like thousands of people are experiencing the same thing. I can get the printer to be recognized, I can make it the default printer, it will respond to print commands, but all it does is shoot out blank paper, no printing whatsoever. I have tried solution after solution, but none of them work. One person had mentioned that the HP720 driver already in Vista is only a very basic driver and will not activate many (if any) of the functions, that there were more things on the original HP722c install disk that have been left out on the Vista basic driver. I have the original install disk, and Vista will not accept it or let it run, saying it is incompatable. Dead end. But when I open the disk (don't try to install) there are a lot of things on it: CSY; DAN; DEU; ENU; ESM; FIN; FRA; HUN; ITA; NLD; NON; PLI; PTB; RUS; SVC; as well as AUTORUN; DIAG.PRN; HEPJ720C; HPOPNP.DLL; HPSETUP; and SETUP.

How and where can I install these individual items to see if they fix the problem? And which items would likely be the right ONES? There has GOT to be a way to do this!

Any input greatly appreciated!HP website SAYS there are no drivers for your OS.

Solve : email programme?

Answer»

hi everyone,
I have a question for you. When I bought my new computer that is running Vista Ultimate Office 2007 Professional/Academic, the default programme for emails was and is, Microsoft Outlook. I find this programme a pain as it is linked to a bunch of other programmes and it also does not allow one to use stationery- except for the very boring microsoft templates. It also disables animations in in-coming emails and won't allow selection of text for printing- forcing the use of Microsoft Word for this. My question is, can I opt to use Windows Mail for my email programme instead, would Windows Mail be better and if so, how do I go about doing this? Please explain in simple terms as I am a farmer not an IT expert (some farmers I know are- but unfortunately not me).

well, Outlook is part of Office, which consists of Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Powerpoint, as you know. But, when doing email,, it works alone for that purpose. So, I'm not sure what you mean when you SAY "it is linked to a bunch of other programmes". That should not be a problem when using Outlook for email.

I think the basic problem here is lack of KNOWLEDGE of all the features and capabilities of Outlook. I'm sure you can add many stationaries to the ones you see from a default installation of Outlook. I'm not looking at Outlook 2007 right now. I'll take a look at it LATER and post again, regarding animations and selection of text for printing.

Yes, you can opt to use Windows Mail as your default email program. Would it be better? Well, I use it and I think it works fine. Well, I see that animation can not be enabled in Outlook 2007. Apparently, Microsoft made this decision for security reasons. See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA102014391033.aspx for some info on this.

I think you'll find Windows Mail much easier to use for your email, or try Thunderbird, as patio mentioned. Windows Mail will display animations and you can create your own stationary or download more from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/stationery.aspx or numerous other sources.

To make Windows Mail your default email client, open it. I think it will ask you whether you want to make it your default email client. If not, post back and I'll give further instructions on that. hi Sage,
thank you I will give it a go and let you know how Iget on.
Thanks,
to everyone for their help.

Have you always gotten the error messsages?

How big are the files you are trying to save?I didn't make any changes to the laptop. the Error messages are pretty new. It happens more and more now, even when I'm just trying to see what files are on the external HDD.Try doing a system restore to before the problem started. If I do a system restore will I lose the new files I've created and saved (documents and music) since the last restore point?I did a system restore but for some reason it would only let me go back a few days. This did not help the problem. I foresee me reinstalling XP in the near future.I'm back again and I still need help. THis external Hard drive istill isn't working on a new PC. At first it wouldn't read or write just large files for example my MP3 Folder is several gigs big. Now it won't even read, write or copy small files that are only a few MB in size. I even tried TAKING it out of the enclosure and adding inside my PC's case for a direct hookup and I get this error

"Error 0x8007o45d The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

and then all of Vista usually crashes and I have to reboot. Please don't tell me this is the second defective hard drive I bought in a month. The hard drive completely failed. It is now a metal brick. I guess all the problems I was having was because it was dying.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Is it a Seagate drive ? ?yes it is one of Seagate 1.5 TB drives I bought. The other one failed initaially.. But according to Seagate's website drives with my model numbers don't need the firmware upgrade.

I can still get my money back for one of the drives and get a 1TB for $30 less (which would be $100).

Do you think that's what I should do? If so what brand should I buy because my WD hard drive died a few weeks ago and that was less than a year old.

I still have the other seagate dive as my primary hard drive. What's a good software test to see if it's good? I don't trust seagate's website. There is no reason to not trust Seagates site...
The diagnostics are FREE and called SeaTools...
I would return the drive for a replacement instead of trying to DIAGNOSE it...that's what the Warranty is for.I've just been HEARING about all these defective drives from Seagate and I just bought 2 Seagates that went bad.

The drive I'm referring to is completely unresponsive now. So, my only choice to make is do I get a refund and buy a different drive or do I just exchange it for another of the same model?

Solve : Vista restarts computer automatically?

Answer»

We REALLY need to see WHAT is updating

Alan <>< Best of LUCK and you may want to back up your data before handing it to IT...Hi all, and once again, thanks for all the help.

So, this morning I booted the SYSTEM and immediately got a message reading" configuring updates, do not shut off your computer. I tried getting a screen shot but to not avail. The screen goes to blue then this message pops up reading: Configuring update 1 - Do not shut off your computer. After a few minutes, the message CHANGES to configuring update 2 - etc. then configuring 3. After about 5-10 minutes the system reboots and hangs. If I remove the battery and unplug the power source I am FINALLY able to reboot and use the system. Weird stuff!

BTW: nothing is stored on this systme without being backed up multiple ways - online and on external HD.

Thanks again -Now, it looks more clear.
It seems like some updates can't finish installation.
Since all your data is backed up.....try to reinstall Vista.

I didn't mark it in my calendar Geek, That was a great answer on reply #3
SharkygirlToshiba uses a Recovery DVD that is a Ghost backup of the HD as it was when it came out of the TOSHIBA factory. It should have been in the box with the laptop.
Look for it.....FIND it.....use it to recover the lappy to factory condition.

Can't find it? Contact Toshiba for a replacement disk.

Ground the son till he's 25!

Good luck and HAPPY Computing!

Solve : I can't load my laptop past the log in screen.?

Answer»

I have a HP laptop that I have had for about a month and it has Windows Vista Home PREMIUM on it. Well I just went to go turn in my laptop and everything booted up fine and then it went to the log in screen where I put my password in. Well I put my password in and it GOES to log me in and it seems that all is going well and then all that comes up for some reason INSTEAD of my normal screen is "My Documents" and nothing else, I can't see my wallpaper, the icons, the taskbar, or anything but this file that is open and the background is just black. The good thing about it thought is I can navigate my whole computer with the file that is open and all my programs still work but I want it to go back to normal. I tried doing a system restore but I had no luck with that and I ran a virus scan and also had no luck with that either. So can someone please help me I am desperate.

Here is a link to what my screen looks like when I log in. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g133/SCVroker7253/*censored*.jpgTry loading the Last Known Good Configuration.

Follow these steps:

1. Remove all floppy disks, CDS, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

2. Do one of the following:

• If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows LOGON prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

• If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.

3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

4. If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start by using Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER. Windows will then resume starting normally.

Solve : My files won't delete!?

Answer»

I downloaded a bunch of video files from my camera, and they take up a ton of room on my computer. I tried to delete them, but it keeps telling me that I don't have permission to do so.

First, it asks if I'm sure I want to move the folder to the recyling bin. When I say yes, it asks me to confirm the operation. Then I hit continue, and the screen darkens as another window pops up asking again for confirmation. After hitting continue again, the screen lightens and TELLS me that I don't have the permission I need.

I'm on an HP Vista, and I don't know how to tell my RAM. If there's anything else IMPORTANT I didn't put, let me know!Try Shift+Delete...this BYPASSES the Recycle Bin.
They will be GONE for good...If that doesn't work, you can try a program called KillBox!

It is powerful so be careful.

Get it here - http://killbox.net/Thanks patio! The shift+delete worked! Wow, you people here are smart. I am so going to read some more of these threads. Just cause you guys rock. You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime !
