Solve : Vista Notebook stopped working...please help.?

Answer»

Greetings everyone, I happen to have a free period between classes and thought I would try and help my poor notebook. This seemed like a good place to start. A little background info, I am working in Japan, though my comp was bought in American, and unfortunately the closest Best Buy is in Shanghai, China. But I really need my computer as a means to SURVIVE, given my situation. I APPRECIATE any and all help and apologize for my computer illetaracy.

Problem:
I was making cookies saturday and listening to music when all of a sudden my computer shut down. Puzzled I restarted it and have been getting the same messages since. Windows begins to start up, but then *Startup Repair* runs and runs till it SAYS Windows cannot repair this computer automatically, it askes if I would like to send information about this problem, and then it shuts down. I have tried getting it into safe mode, but the same thing happens. Is there anyone can help me?

Im very worried, because of course I need my computer, but I had just lost a computer last year, bought this one in december, so its only about a year old. I am most concerned that I wont be able to get my photos and other such memories back from my files....but I dont think its THAT bad....i hope.

If there is anything else I left out, please let me know. oh, my laptop is a TOSHIBA A215 if that helps.hi. To alleviate your worries, at least a little, your memories are intact. just dont do anything rash like reinstall.

I'd offer repair assistance, but for the fact that i have boycotted Vista. Yes, I was an NT fanatic (among other things) a proud win2k SysAdmin, xppro professor, and now am looking at Win7.

I told everyone and still do, to steer clear of Vista. Wish i could offer help, i feel for ya. Hey i still have occasional issues I need help on, oddly enough, if that helps any.

Good luck to you with your problemAhh, I am glad all my photos and other things are safe, thank you for that.

It was not my choice to have Vista, not that I knew any better at the time. It was best/most affordable computer in stock two days before I returned to Japan ;/

Thanks for stopping by!Grab one of these:

2.5" to IDE connector...
This will allow you to hook up that laptop drive to any desktop machine as a slave and retrieve/burn your data...
After that do a clean install with the laptop's Restore CD.
This will take the machine back to Day One STATUS.

Solve : Need help again w/Vista & Word?

Answer»

I bought Word 2000 on eBay. It is brand new, never been opened package. The seller appeared to be very reputable. I loaded the CD in my CD tray and closed it. The CD sounded like it started, but nothing ever happened. So I went to Add Hardware, the Wizard told me (that's funny...the Wizard told me!) to use the CD. The booklet that came with it said I could use the default installation: c:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\ and when I did that, a window came up telling me that the location is unavailable, make sure the disk is in, you are connected to the Internet, try again and if it still cannot be located, the information might have moved to another location. That was about as clear as mud to me. Can anyone HELP? Oh, and it has the product key code on it and I am running Vista.

Thanks - Debby

... I went to Add Hardware, the Wizard told me (that's funny...the Wizard told me!) to use the CD.

Why did you go to Add Hardware? You're trying to add software, not hardware.

And, you meant you purchased Office 2000, not just Word 2000, right? Does that CD have a Microsoft label on the top side? Where, exactly, did you find the product key?Yes, on the disk it says Microsoft Word 2000. There is a booklet that came with it and the Product key code is on the COVER of the booklet and right above the numbers and BAR code it says Certificate of Authenticity. The key code looks like a label when you are looking at the booklet, but it actually is PART of the page, no stuck-on label. I went to Add Hardware for stupidity! My mind-set is still on XP where you can go to Add or Remove Programs. I'm not used to Vista yet and so far with as little as I know about computers, I do not like it. However, I am thinking I have a bad disk. TOTALLY baffled!!
Yes, a bad disk may be the problem here. Can you try installing it on another computer, just for testing purposes? Of course, don't go through the software registration process on some other computer used just for testing.

Solve : PC not getting to the User Log On Screen?

Answer»

Download Vundofix to your desktop.

Important! If using Windows Vista be sure to Run As Administrator

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message SAYING vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply.
    .
Note: It is POSSIBLE that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

If you receive this error: "Run-time error '339': Component 'comdlg32.ocx' or one its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid", a new copy and instructions on where to put it can be found here

Please let VundoFix finish, sometimes it can take MULTIPLE passes

After the Vundofix scan was completed I got the message "Done Searching for files. No infected files were found".This scanner works with Internet Explorer only!

Scan with the BitDefender Online Scanner
Click I Agree to the LICENSE and then install the ActiveX control.
Please DO NOT change the Scanning Options.
That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files.

Select Start Scan to begin.
This scan can take a while so please be patient and let it complete.

Once BitDefender completes the scan:
Click-on the Detected Problems tab.
Then select Click here to export the scan report

This will save a file named bdscan.html I would suggest saving it to the Desktop so you can easily find it. (take notice of where you save it so you can find it later)

You will have to upload the file online. The forums will not accept HTML.

Go to File Dropper

Click Upload
Locate the file and double click it.
Copy the download link and post it back here.

You have 4 or 5 Topics going now...are all these issues the same machine ? ?no different machines , Im trying to get educated while fixing some machines

I was at the vaio website and it says that this error can be caused by a non COMPATIBLE video driver. Here is what it says

I have a question: How can I possibly update the driver if the computer doesnt boot up. All I have access to is the setup screen (the BIOS). how do i access the drivers
Carry on then...LOL.Have you tried booting to safemode ? ?
Tap F8 repeatedly after powering up and before any splash screens...I tied to do that, but nothing happens. The computer proceeds on to GIVE me the vaio splash screen and then the error operating system cannot be read. Maybe the disk drive somehow is jolted loose, let me try taking out the drive and putting it back in. and ill try the f8 thing again.

ill post what happens

is there anything else I can try?

One thing about manufacturers: They dont sell the os disk with a computer but rather put the OS on a separate partition. But what is the use of all that if the computer wont boot up. They should just give the disks with the computer I think.

Solve : Lost GBs on my hard drive?

Answer»

I tried to restore my computer system to correct a problem I was having and the TECH that I was talking to had me try to load the restore discs that came with my computer. That didn't work and I lost the operating system in my computer and had to load the operating system disc that came with my computer to get it to work again. Well originally I had 40 GB on my hard drive. Now I only have 16.

When I follow this path: Start>Control Panel>Admin. Tools> Computer management> Disk Management I find on the hard drive I have 16.1 gb being used and 21.24 gb are unallocated.

How do I get all of the original Hard drive Back??Any of the CDs you have say something like drivers? It SOUNDS like you need to load the drivers for your machine....

if it's vista, you can resize your drive; but OTHERWISE you might have to settle with the creation of a data drive from your unallocated space.I have only 1 operating system disc and 4 restore discs that wipe out everything On my hard drive.

Solve : Laptop can't connect to internet...?

Answer»

The laptop is a Packard Bell EasyNote MX with 1.6 Ghz Intel DUO processor and 512 MB RAM. Its a fresh and CLEAN version of windows xp and nothing has been changed. i tried connecting to my wireless NETWORK in the normal way by going to control panel and then network connections and then search for wireless networks....then it asked for the network password or WAP and i entered it correctly...after that it just kept on saying that it was acquiring a network address but nothing else...i tried to repair it but no success in connecting to the internet. I also tried ipconfig/ renew and ipconfig/ release. does anyone know why this is happening or what can be done to fix this?Have you tried turning off the moden/router for a minute and turn it back on...wait at least 2 minutes brfore trying the connection again.Hello patio!

Nope...i tried what you told but nothing's changed. It's the same as before.
Is it build-in wireless, or wireless card? Is the switch on?
Did you install motherboard drivers?Hello again.

I'm not sure whether its BUILT-in wireless or wireless card...but it's a laptop and it had and still has wireless accessibility when i first bought it (and i haven't modified the hardware)...Yes the switch is on. No...i didn't do anything about motherboard drivers . We had bought the laptop around 2-3 years AGO and it was working fine almost the whole time...then we bought another laptop with Vista on it...and this became a sort of spare one...recently i decided to turn it on...but it had problems booting up (i dont know why)...so i decided to recover the computer using the recovery disc which was made when i bought it...it recovered successfully...then this problem started. btw, we have wireless security (WPA) for the router here...(if that helps in fixing this).

Awaiting a reply. If its built in you wont see a card sticking out of the side, and if restarting doesn't help, contact your provider. Good luckyeah...i think its built-in then...and i don't want to contact the people at my service provider unless i don't have any choice left.If you know the setting for your wireless security then get into the router / turn off the security / try the old laptop / if it works then reset the security as it was before/ try again.

Alan <>< If you reinstalled using recovery CDs, then the connection should work right away.
It may be something wrong with network adapter driver.
Any errors in Device Manager?Hello everyone!

Thanks for all your advice...the connection is proper now!! The solution posted by ale52 was the one that worked for me...thanks to all the others for trying to help as well!

This problem is now resolved. Thanks for posting back

Solve : Security Alert: Malware protection is OFF?

Answer»

My wife's laptop POPS up a "Windows Security CENTER" alert in her tray periodically (few times a day) and firing up the Security Center says her "Malware protection" has been disabled. If we wait long ENOUGH, it re-enables itself (5 - 15 mins?)

Irritation factor: High
Threat factor: Unknown

Her LT: Sony VAIO, Vista Sp1, 2 months old.

My LT: HP Entertainment, Vista Sp1, 6 months old.

Both laptops:
Firewall: Comodo (mine), Windows Live OneCare (hers)
ANTIVIRUS: Windows Defender (both ON), AVG-free (both ON)

AVG scans daily at noon on both machines. The Sony's odd "alert" behavior doesn't occur on mine. AVG scans have fairly clean results (warnings only, which I assume are for tracking cookies.)

My internet habits are fairly restricted: 8 to 10 "safe" sites. She spends time on Pogo.com and collects recipes. We both email (Yah__) and play the occasional amusing *.wmv video capture friends send to us.

Anyone familiar with this behavior? Is something venomous going on?

Thanks...Quote

Both laptops:

The real-time protection of two antivirus programs may conflict with each other and cause the following:

1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) Conflicts: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
3) Performance: More that one antivirus will cause your PC to become slow and it may even crash or blue screen.

Uninstall OneCare or AVG and see if it STOPS. You should never run two antivirus or firewalls at the same time.

Thats not very bloated, really.

I've been using it for the last week, great OS, faster than Vista on this machine...

Trying to fully convert to Windows 7 at this moment, however, I am having difficulties deleting the current Windows 7 partition...

my dads computer failed miserably a couple of weeks ago, I installed windows 7 on it and its away like a charm. Previously it was running windows XP SP2, but now it is just 7.

It runs office 2000 brilliantly ftw... Very Bloated? How much does Vista need?

Foggs, you will be surprised when you install it.i never even touched Vista. but your right Carbon, Vista requires an enormous (IMO) amount of space to install - I was referring to the W7 compile however. Long ago, I've had servers running off of zip drives.

It is amazing how things have changed over the years. Microsofts' current offering requires a larger hard disk (for joe-shmoes computer at home)
than a major search ENGINE used to cache all of the internet 10 years ago - If you never touched Vista why do you bash it as an OS ? ?
Just curios.Define:Hyperbole;Exaggeration

the internet was WELL established in 1998. It would have taken far more then 15GB to cache it- but search engines then (before google, that is) didn't Cache pages, but rather "indexed" them.omg. do you think i am challenging your knowledge?

I KNOW From personal experience the index for a specific top 10 engine 10 years ago was on a drive smaller than 40gig.

I do not "bash" Vista. I know many, many developers and programmers that had a hard time writing for that platform when it was in beta, so i avoided it, and recommended it be avoided. They as I, can't understand the voluminous amount of code that comes out from them for an OS. If you have any history in the field you know how small they can get. Regardless MS gets the Lionshare of the market. I am not complaining, I previously was employed by a MS Partner, so in a way, they paid my bills

I circumvented VIsta, although i am eager to spend time with W7, which i have, but have yet to play with

Quote from: foggs on February 05, 2009, 10:13:40 AM
I KNOW From personal experience the index for a specific top 10 engine 10 years ago was on a drive smaller than 40gig.

An index and a cache are two separate things. an index will keep track of the page URL. a cache literally stores the contents of that URL. supposing that the index stores maybe a good KB of data for each page- stored on the 37.5GB drive (BIOS limitations of the day- likely the size you mean)

37.5*1024*1024=39,321,600KB

Assuming ALSO that this is not the same drive used to store the OS used on the machine- (rather, it was likely to be implemented via RAID), all this space will be available for the index. Assuming a average of about 1KB to store the url and some keyword heuristics, it could store about 40 Million index entries. However, at the same time the system likely implemented some form of compression- or perhaps it didn't store the data as URL's but rather as IP addresses that could be resolved to web addresses with a reverse DNS lookup. If that were the case, then we would have a maximum size of 15 bytes (four quartets and three periods), and depending on EXACTLY what data was stored for the Index entry itself, chances are the size of each record in the database averaged a good bit less then 1K, likely around 768 bytes. taking this into account, the number of records (and thus database entries) we get a good 50 Million entries.

cacheing would bloat the average size of each record (containing URL, keyword data, AND the cached file) would bloat the record size up quite a large amount- the average web page of medium complexity being about 42K- so we have a drastically reduced number of possible entries given the disk size of the time, of just over 936,000, which was nothing close the the number of entries stored in a Search engine index- (google, in 1998, had an index of 26 million unique URLs,(with the previous space-conservative analysis, it would clock in at 26.6GB which was definitely doable within the size of the drive) BUT- it still required more then 15GB of space thus proving your claim
is just baseless hyperbole.

And regardless of the use of such hyperbole even in teh proper context, One must also analyze the relative cost of that same amount of space- after all, drives with 500GB or 750GB of space are cheaper then that 40GB drive was in 1998, so the relative cost of using 15GB on that drive would be much less.

Although- I do RECOGNIZE that the OS's are getting bigger. There are a variety of reasons for that, one of them being that people are unnecessarily demanding.

Also- Bonus points for comparing the size to something other then the install size of a completely separate OS, which seems to be a commonly used comparison.

Quote from: foggs on February 05, 2009, 10:13:40 AM
I know many, many developers and programmers that had a hard time writing for that platform when it was in beta

That's true. It's a commonly known fact that developers and programmers also had trouble writing for XP when IT was in beta. Same with windows 2000. But troubles will come ... and they will pass. The introduction of new technologies in each OS... be it active Desktop in Windows 98, Windows DNA in windows 2000 or the new LUA and COM+ APIs in windows XP, and now the addition of UAC and even more restrictions on running programs in Vista, there is always a hurdle to overcome when programming under a new OS. I think the trickiest part is not only getting the program to work in the new OS but having it backward compatible with the previous generation. I could go on about using GetProcAddress and GetModuleHandle, but I'll be wasting my time since it's mostly irrelevant jargon anyway. What a spiel

I myself disliked the first release of Vista, because I didn't understand why it needed so much RAM.

I continued this dislike for a very long time...

But as soon as I actually started doing research on how Vista manages itself and its RAM, I actually begin to understand why there never seems to be any RAM free when you are running vista - unlike windows XP, it doesn't let it just sit there, it does something with it when you aren't.

And I actually am starting to like UAC...I DONT have hours to spend building a reply, I dont have any letters after my name, nor do i have thousands of posts credited to my username on these forums, and lastly I've only been involved in the field since just a bit after google came to be.

So, i do have limited credibility. Let me CLarify i never said anything about Googles cache, but what i did say, is fact, not conjecture-although the search engine in question (owned by a global communications company) changed
names, then changed format altogether and is no longer a search engine, although the domain lives on.

Let me also just say its always been my way, to keep it simple. Our 1st pc (for the family;my 1st had a total of 2 5.25" floppies total storage) had windows 95, with office professional, installed on a 4.1 gigabyte hard drive with 128MB Ram - it was fast. At the time, it was MORE than adequate. The motherboard failed before we ran out of HD space, and it was on (line) 24-7.

Although we didnt download 600 Gigs of Videos. For what other reason does someone need the 500 Gig HD's on the desktops sold today.

Quote
Long ago, I've had servers running off of zip drives.
I doubt any of them had any necessary, fancy graphics current operating systems have.nah. .. information mostly.. things were easier back then, we just didnt know it I literally didn't own a computer until 2002, and even then it was a 286!

Why did you need all that HDD space?
When I had my first computer, it had a 80MB hard drive on it. I thought it was PLENTY enough, that was eighty floppies, of course I wasnt going to max it out.

As technology progresses, so do our demands of what it "needs".
We said we wanted more eye-candy, we got it.
We said we wanted more features, we got it.
Vista is everything we asked for... pretty, elegant, professional, had games, and a lot of features that hardly anyone uses.

Every operating system is bigger than the last.
Windows 1.0 was about 720KB. 2.0 was right around the same size.
3.0 jumped, to a 7 disk installation, 6 were required. About 5MB total, I think. Excellent OS.
95 still had a floppy install, required at least 40MB.
98 175 MB
2000 required 2GB min, with 600MB of space free.
XP required 1.5GB of free space.

Vista did make a jump, quite a jump. It requires at least 15GB free to install, however, it wont take it all up. They take into consideration the fact that many people will install a lot of stuff.

Whats unique about Vista?
It included more new features than any other Microsoft OS (95 and up) ever introduced, in my opinion.

Windows 7 is mainly based off Vista, but, they made many significant performance improvements, as well as added more features that users wanted, like even prettier windows.

No, I'm not trying to immediately contradict you or argue, just discussing.

Solve : WD External Hard drive doesn't recognize Flash??

Hey there, I just bought WD external hard drive (LINK is below)
http://support.wdc.com/product/kb.asp?modelno=WD3200H1U-00&x=13&y=14

aanndd, I'm runnin Vista 64 bit.

I'm having trouble installing the hard drive. when I double click setup.exe, a window pops up and says,
"To run this program, version 8 or greater of Flash ActiveX Control is needed. You can download it at etc. etc. etc..."

Well, I have version 9 or 10 or whichever new version there is. Also, while this window is up, another window is up in the top left corner, and it is green?

I hit cancel, because I DO have flash and then it says this:

When I went to "Solutions Online" it just told me the problem was caused by Flash and I'd have to install it. Well I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and I still have the same problem.

Has anyone else encountered this?? It's really weird.
See if can find version 8 of Flash. The WD software might be quite old.

After WD is working reinstall the latest verion of Flash.

Adobe should have version 8 of Flash

Good luckQuote

What? Can not install a HDD without Adobe?
What NEXT? A lot of people don't like WD Backup Anywhere, which is just Memeo Backup repackaged. You don't have to install the software that comes with the drive. Just connect it and use it. It's a little frustrating how something that simple isn't working though.
I would really want to know how to fix it (because I'm so stubborn), but oh well!
I dont know if its because i'm using 64 bit vista, or if its WD.

Solve : Vista Window Installer pop up problem?

Answer»

Recently I have had problems when I try to Install or uninstall a program.
Windows installer pop up shows the following.

"The system adminstrator has set POLICIES to PREVENT this installation"

is the latest

Also, I get one something along the lines of

"you must be logged on as or have permission from the system ADMINISTRATOR to proceed"

even though I'm logged on as system ADMIN??

Can anyone help??

Thanks,

-PeteHave you tried right clicking the Setup file and select "run as Admin" ? ?Right clicking setup file does not provide that option...... any other ideas?

Thanks,

-PeteHello Pete.

Thanks to 'User Account Protection' in Windows Vista, even an administrator account runs with standard user privileges until triggered by UAP, so your problem (most likely) is with the programs you are trying to install/uninstall not being updated for Vista and UAP, and therefore not triggering your administrator priveleges.

Here's something to try:
Visit this LINK: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Try Method #1 first, note that you will have to restart your computer after disabling UAP.
On reboot, try installing/uninstalling a few things that have been giving you problems.

Whether or not this fixes your problem, be sure to re-enable UAP after you're done testing.

Post back with your results and good luck.

Solve : How can I recover a "one" word document if my computer crashed. please help??

Answer»

Hi, can someone please assist me with my question. I will begin by explaining how my computer crashed. I accidently dropped my laptop on the ground. The distance from where I dropped it was not high. After, I picked up my laptop and began to watch a move, but all of a sudden my computer froze. I restarted my computer, however now vista would not show up and I was presented with a screen that displays there have been an error with word. So I called Toshiba to ask for assistance and they recommend re starting and re booting my computer. Is there any way possible I could still relocate my word file. The document is not big and contains the max 2 PAGES double spaced. I constantly SAVE this “1” document every day, and it is also saved as a docx if that might HELP. I would really appreciate it if someone could assist me with this situation. Thank You…. In addition, my computer does not allow me to access the safe MODE feature. So wait, I'm confused. You were watching a movie on word? Will it boot into Windows at all ? ?

If not the laptop drive needs to be removed from the machine and hooked up to a desktop to see if the data can be retrieved.
Let us know...no i droped my laptop and then i started watching a movie but during the movie my computer just froze. The only image that appears when i turn on my computer, is start windows normal or system RECOVERY. when i click systyem recovery all it does is load and then there is a black screen for five minutes. then my cursor appears and 10 minutes later a scrren says add system.A similar thing happened to me and I had to erase the hard drive on a different pc and then re install windows.System Recovery since this is a laptop will wipe all your data and take the machine back to Day One status...
What happens if you choose start normal ? ?if i select start normal the windows icon loads for like 10 min and then re starts and says there was an error, click system repair and it will diagnose any problems with Windows.

Solve : i need some help with finding a problem?

Answer»

i PURCHASED and built my own computer recently and everything runs fine. when i play CERTAIN games such as counter-strike:source or combat arms, the game freezes for a SECOND and continues on. I have a 9800gx2, e8500, ddr2 1066, 850W psu, and a GIGABYTE GA-EP45C-DS3R motherboard. it is brand new, secure, and shouldnt be lagging. my ping spikes during lag if that has anything to do with it. i tried setting priority higher and it didnt do anything. i tried updating my bios to see if it was the motherboard not propperly recognizing the cpu and that didnt fix it. i tried redownloading to see if the game files were corrupt. i tried shifting all processes to 1 processor and the game to the other and it still didnt work. i have the vista driver for my wireless and i dont think that is the problem. I am getting 300+fps in these games and still getting random freezes. i monitored my cpu, disk, and network USAGE with RESOURCE monitor during a freeze and nothing different was happening. any help would be greatly appreciated

Solve : Internet Connection Sharing (Vista)?

*Two Machines are connected VIA ICS
*Each of the machines have USB Devices plugged into them

How does one machine access the others device?
(This is on Vista, and both USB devices are storage devices)

On a relevant yet irrelevant note: (er, another question)

Assume the following, ignore the previous:

*Two machines are, again, connected VIA ICS
*Both machines have Wi-Fi and Ethernet ports
*ICS Connection is MADE VIA Ethernet port
*Each PC is also connected to two SEPARATE wireless networks.

How do i TAKE the network on (LETS USE the name:) Machine A, and put it on Machine B, so Machine A's connection is using both Machine B's wireless and Machine B's wireless?

Solve : x64 OS over x32??

Answer»

I have a 32-bit installation of Windows Vista on my LAPTOP, and I was considering either installing Windows 7 over it or dual-booting.
But my QUESTION is, is it a good idea to install a 64-bit edition of Windows over a 32-bit edition? Or does it like not matter about what "bit" it is?64-bit Operating systems will generally run more efficient because the cpu is executing twice as MUCH code/time given, as opposed to a 32-bit OS, and it handles larger amounts of ram memory..

However, if you're GOING to upgrade to 64 bit OS, you have to consider that there is not full support for 64 bit Operating Systems in general... 64 bit Operating systems mean you need 64 bit drivers, and 64 bit applications to get the full effect. Most 32 bit applications are backward-compatible in a 64 bit environment

More info.

here.

Well yeah besides the fact that there are some lacking capabilities with the 64-bit edition; I learned that a while ago, and thanks for the reminder btw haha
I was just curious as to whether it was possible to install the 64bit over the 32bit... I thought it was hardware related; meaning, I thought x32/86 and x64 were processors and only x32/86 OSes could only be installed on x32/86 systems, and the same for x64. Guess I thought wrong.
So anyways, it's okay if I install Win7 x64 over my Vista x32/86?If you have a 32-bit processor that uses an EM64T instruction set, then you can install a 64 bit OS... Without EM64T you cannot do it...

For example.. I've got a Pent. 4 641 which is a 32 bit processor, but it has EM64T technology built in. I dual-booted my Vista Business 32 bit version with the 64-bit version using the same cpu..

What cpu are you using?you cannot install a x64 version over top of a 32-bit version. you must do a clean install.

Why ASK if you know it's not possible in the first place? If you do a clean install, your not Installing it over top of the previous version.Download CPU-Z here. Install it, run it. Look on the CPU tab after you have run it, where it says, "Instructions."

Look directly to the right of where it says "instructions". If you see "EM64T" in the instructions set list, then you're cpu has that technology, if you don't see it...then tough luck I guess

Gotcha. I got ahold of a x86 disc, anyways.

Solve : Difficulty pasting text to Roxio creator 2010 Pro CD booklet panels.?

Answer»

Does anyone have some inside info or some other idea about how to paste text from Microsoft Works/Word documents or word processor (wps files) to the CD Booklet panels in ROXIO's Creator 2010 Pro software? I am trying to complete a music/documentary project intended as a gift to MANY of my PROFESSIONAL friends that contains 20 music tracks, and has detailed track-by-track notes on the production of each song. The total amount of text material I'm trying to input requires the creation of a 12-page booklet. This project is actually the sixth in a series I began nearly ten years ago on my old computer, using the old Adaptec software that was in there. This older software not only allowed me to paste text, but photos and clipart, and shrink everything to sizes that fit the booklet pages. Only text goes into this project; but I'm having absolutely no luck doing the same thing with the new software. Every attempt I've made to copy text sections I'd like to paste seems to meet the same problem--when I go back to the Roxio side and pull down the "edit' menu, "paste" doesn't light up--it's as if the Roxio software has no idea I've copied something to the clipboard. I've POURED fruitlessly looking for my answer in the user guide; got nothing out of the software's numerous tutorials (none of which dealt with my problem); and got simply a terse answer from Roxio's online help ("text is text"). I've been forced to email the notes in their original form to one of my principal contributors--who has written a book on the secrets of the studio and in fact once worked for Sir George Martin. I'm a broadcaster myself; and I've always tried to do projects like this at the highest level I'm capable of--given my relative lack of computer saavy. So here I am with a two-week-old computer, the new Windows 7 OS, and top-of-the-line software (which you've got to buy separately and ain't cheap) that I THOUGHT WOULD NOT give me this type of problem. I can only think there has to be either a non-support problem somewhere or there's some subtle trick I don't know about that will help me get around this problem. That contributor I've mentioned in this piece has also recommended I try this approach in this site. Anyone have an idea on how I can fix this problem and finally get this project finished?

Solve : Dead Windows 7 32-bit laptop (will not start)?

Answer»

I have a 2007 windows vista laptop that I installed Windows 7 32-bit on.

I decided to reinstall vista (a custom version called "windows Vista Extreme Edition R2") but during installation I got an error message that said my computer did not have enough memory to install.

I uninstalled almost all of my programs but still did not have enough memory to install.

So I downloaded Paragon Disk Wiper and ran the program the program. (it took several hours to finish)

Before I ran the program I burned the ISO windows Vista Extreme Edition R2 to a DVD+RW Disc and I also made a recovery and backup disc.

After the program finished I restarted my computer and booted from the CD drive that the Vista ISO disc was In.

The problem Is my computer said "no operating system found".

After that i Restarted my computer and booted from the recovery disc but the same thing happened.

Then I tried the backup disc but had same problem.

I went to the other computer in my house that I am using now (windows 7 32-bit desktop) and made a recovery disc that I put in my laptop but my laptop still will not WORK and now SAYS "Error loading operating system"

Is there any WAY of fixing this or will i just have to buy a new laptop?

Thanks for reading this long post.As it is searching for an operating system, that suggests to me that you CD/DVD is not set as first boot in the BIOS.
Have you checked this?.Quote

do you think this would work?

nope.

remember, that's a repair disc- you need Windows installed (if corrupted) to use it properly.

You WIPED the disk clean with Paragon Disk wiper, so you have no OS on the drive at all. Your best bet would be the recovery discs for the laptop, or a legitimate Vista disc.ok i guess i have to go buy vista then. Thanks for the advice and help.

i cant also format my disk..

anyone can help here..?

i just need convenient step to someone already experience this problem...Did you DLoad and install XP drivers for this machine after the install ? ?

Does the same thing happen in safemode ? ?Why down grade ???windows 7 is far better. Not sure why you'd want to downgrade. If there's a real reason to have XP, use XP Mode (yes, I know it's an updated VirtualPC, and other virtual products like VMWare and VirtualBox are better, but still...the free license doesn't hurt).

However, if you absolutely insist on having XP as your main OS, then one thing you need to check for in your BIOS is whether SATA operation is set to AHCI. Vista and 7 have native AHCI drivers--XP does not.

If it is set to AHCI, then XP will blue-screen with 0x7B (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) without either:
a) Switching that to ATA or IDE mode (or whatever it's called in your particular BIOS)
b) Slipstreaming the AHCI drivers into your XP installation
c) Copying the drivers to a floppy disk (yes, a floppy disk), and press F6 when asked to "Press F6 to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver."

Hassle-free choice: a). Quote from: flipflopjd on January 21, 2010, 10:41:07 AM

It's mostly because Vista was such a rough ride that people lost their trust in Microsoft and feared that Win7 was just more of Vista.

The outcry was that XP has been working so well for so long that they didn't want to mess with what worked. Due to this pressure Microsoft agreed to an extension to the XP product life.

Now that Win7 is out, people have started to realize that it is the best Windows that Microsoft has ever released, and certainly the best since XP.

That having been said, XP is getting long in the tooth and as hardware and software march forward, you can't stand still with the OS and expect there not to be any problems. XP was THE OS to have in 2003. Unfortunately, not in 2010.My contention is we are here to assist with what the OP wants to do...not question his choices in the matter.Quote from: patio on January 21, 2010, 11:33:11 AM

I agree. My bad. A help thread is not the right place to have an academic discussion. The OP is only here because a decision had been previously made, and he is here for technical assistance or repair options.Quote from: patio on January 21, 2010, 11:33:11 AM

Agree. This is similar to when somebody asks in the apple forum "what mac should I buy" and there is literally a of replies that basically say "macs SUXOR Use a PC LOL" and it's simply ridiculous.

The age of an OS, or the age of any software, for that matter, is irrelevant to it's usefulness. Many businesses still use DOS based database management systems; It works, it's familar to them, and there is no reason to use something else.

I learned a long time ago that the "current thang" is always yesterdays thang tommorrow, so it's really just a waste of time to bother upgrading just for the sake of upgrading.

An Operating System is something that a user will have to use everyday. Therefore it should be their choice.

Personally, for example, I could easily upgrade to Windows 7; and it would probably work fine. but I don't. Vista is working fine for me; and that brings me to another point:

Quote

Now that Win7 is out, people have started to realize that it is the best Windows that Microsoft has ever released, and certainly the best since XP.

certainly? Sounds more like an opinion stated as fact. Really, the differences between windows 7 and Vista are so tiny it's almost comedic how different people paint the two. People skip straight over Vista to 7 and then proclaim how much better 7 is then Vista, despite never having even used Vista. I believe it was Patio who stated at some point previously the real reason that windows 7 is so much more successful: the public beta. I personally believe that is in fact the only reason. It's just another version of windows. it's not some kind of super ultra mega awesome OS that toasts your bread and BUTTERS it for you that some people paint it as; heck, the differences between Windows 7 and Vista are probably less then half the number of differences between XP and 2000, and people still painted XP as a steaming turd just as they painted Vista after it. It was the windows 7 beta program that reversed EVERYBODY's idea; the mass publicity; the exposure, etc. It has nothing to do with anything they "fixed".

Now, then, returning at last to the actual Topic: STOP code 0x7B in this case probably is caused by what other have touched on; the PC has a SATA hard drive. Killerb255 has excellently pointed out several ways of getting the drive to work with XP; Personally, I just switch the SATA mode from AHCI to "compatible" or "IDE". No need to finagle with drivers or floppies or slipstreaming.

Looks like you've performed an installation already (windows.0); after switching from AHCI in the BIOS was the XP disc able to boot and format your drive? remember you have to boot from the disc to install; you cannot install XP over top of Windows 7 from within windows.

In my last post, I meant either a), b), OR c), not a), b) AND c)!

If you switch AHCI to ATA, you do NOT have to have a floppy disk or slipstream any drivers.

It is never a good idea to install one version of Windows on top of another. When you do, another "Windows" directory gets created (unless you're going from or to, say NT or 2000, but that's another story altogether), and you have a big flippin' mess on your hands.

You should have backed up all your important data (if any), wiped the entire drive clean, and installed XP from scratch.

Never install two Windows installations on the same PC unless you either (and this is OR, not AND):
a) Split your hard drive into two partitions, install the oldest version of Windows on the first partition, and then the newest version on the second partition. You'll get a menu after startup asking you which version of Windows you want to boot into.
b) Use two physical drives, installing the oldest version of Windows on the first drive and then the newest version on the second drive. Again, you'll get a menu after startup asking you which version of Windows you want to boot into.
c) Install the oldest version of Windows, and then perform an upgrade install to a newer version (as long as you meet the requirements for an upgrade-install and you're willing to deal with the risks as well as the benefits in doing so).
d) Install Windows, have a major problem, and have to perform a repair-install (like an upgrade install, this also carries risks, especially if your computer is multiple Service Packs and versions of Internet Explorer ahead of your install disc).
e) Install one version of Windows (actually, Mac, Linux, or BSD would work for this as well), install virtual machine software, and install one or more versions of Windows on virtual machines (i.e.: Installing Windows 7, and then downloading/installing the XP Mode components).
f) ...don't mind the messiness of having multiple \WINDOWS directories and having to live with or clean up the mess (some programs mind this...a lot)

I am not baised, As i have used both, But in MY opinion, Its allways XP. The classic design, The less RAM usage, and Compatability.

Im still looking for drivers to run XP on this stupid sata hard drive, So i have to stick with windows 7.

I will go back to windows 7 maybe a year later, when more games and software become compatable - Half the STUFF i have only runs on XP, ANd i am not moving back to vista!

There is very little space left on the Recovery Drive
1) Don't know what that means

2) I deleted your email address. Never post your email address on a public forum unless you want a ton of spam. There are bots that scour the web looking for email addresses and SELLING them to spammers. Can you be more specific when you say 'recovery drive'. Do you mean a PARTITION on the hard drive that is used for recovery? If so that partition is for ONE specific purpose and that is recovery. That partition should be left as is and not messed with.
I may not have fully UNDERSTOOD you so I apologise in advance if that is the case.

I tried to install windows 7 without the cd and when i tried to activate illegally ( i know i should not i tried to get it), it started shutting off on me. Now when i try to login to my user on windows 7 it shuts off right when it logs in. I want a detailed description on how to restore FACTORY setting right at the startup of the computer. Please i really need to get this laptop running... By the way i dont have a system recovery cd..

Thanks in advance. Try pressing F11 very soon after turning on the computer, before Windows would normally start to load. F11 should, if pressed at the right time, start the recovery partition to run, ALLOWING you to restore the system to its original configuration.

I know the F11 works on my Compaq laptop and I believe it should work on your

Try the recovery partition as described here.

If that does not work, order a system restore CD from Gateway. Replacement of the operating system CD may be at a cost according to your warranty status.

Solve : Computer not working!?

Answer»

Heya, my computer hasn't been working for quite some time now and I DECIDED to try to format and reinstall it with Windows 7.
The process goes fine, I boot from the CD and it seemingly works. However when the setup restarts to finalize the installation (ENTERING the part just before the OS login screen where it says something about registry and finalizing the installation) it doesnt work! At first it shows those two texts about finalizing the installation and something about registry. But after that the computer screen just goes blank BLACK. I try to restart the computer but now it only gets to the "Starting Windows" then after that it gets blank black again! Tried starting it in Safe mode but it tells me that the setup cannot finish in safe mode and I will have to restart.

I currently have two INTERNAL HDD's (seagate 320Gb) and I've tried installing the operative system on both of them. The problem persists through both of them.

Please help me! I've been without a proper computer for ages now, what might the problem be?

Sincerely,
Phallan. Please tell us EXACTLY how you are formatting and trying to install Windows 7 - step by step. Also, are you using an original, retail copy of W7?I'm doing it like I've always done it.

Boot from CD, format the harddrives and install a fresh copy of Windows.
Boot from CD-->Format any HDD and delete any splittings of them.-->Install a fresh copy of Windows.

Uhm, no it's not an original CD actually (dont judge me :x). However my friend has installed his system with the same CD and it works like a charm for him!

Sincerely
Phallan1) That's the problem. You need an original version. Just because it works for your friend does not mean it will work for you.
2) I don't judge, but I do insist we follow the rules. We cannot provide any ADDITIONAL assistance with this problem. Thread closed.

Solve : Vista laptop problems?

Answer»

Ok I have a problem with a vista laptop, and it wont boot up. I tried to boot up in safe mode with no luck, however it did boot up once after I loaded the default option. Now it just goes to the repair screen and in the operating system screen there is NOTHING there and asked for drivers, so now where can I get them. I can download them on another computer but where are they found. I also I would let you know that I have Acronis on the laptop and tryed to use the boot disk but nothing happens, does that mean that the hard drive is shot? It tries to load I even get the Acronis loading screen but then it goes blank and does nothing......... any help on this .......thanks.........two-dogs I usually find performing a repair installation to be easier than trying to get into a NTFS file system with an inoperable OS to try to fix missing or corrupt files. If you have the restore media or an oem CD of vista, you should have a repair installation option which willprotect your personal data from being deleted such as a clean install would do. In the end you MAY only have to reinstall software with broken registry keys which is easy from a HEALTHY OS to WORK from.

Hope you have disks so you can just perform repair install and make the fix an easy one. You can also 'borrow' a friends media as long as you activate the key that is located on the laptop against the repair install and not use your friends key. Nothing illegal in that as long as you use your key and no one elses.

Solve : Updates to Operating Systems & Programs?

Answer»

My computer experience goes back >30 years. Over the past 15 years I've owned about 10, most of which I still have. I have five turned on at the present time.

In 1998 I had bought a Gateway and it seemed monthly it needed a new hard drive, so they were telling me. After about 6 months of that I found out Gateway and McAffee were a toxic mix which they could never figure out.

In 2001 I had Norton Internet Security on a (different) system. My home was being remodeled so I rented a place down the street. This particular system was not even CONNECTED to the internet. The Norton subscription expired. I got tired of harassment from popups telling me my subscription was out of date (it was moot with no internet connection to the machine). So I uninstalled it. Only it had no uninstaller back then. So I followed instructions from Norton's WEBSITE. It destroyed the machine and all my work in the middle of a semester.

Over this past summer a University network which requires a virus scanner told me my virus definitions were out of date. I told the service to update the files. It updated them. Then it RAN a scan without my knowledge or consent. It destroyed the machine by quaranteening dll's. I lost 10 years of work on that machine (much was backed up but not all).

If you put the original WinXP disc into any machine, you'll have an AWESOME machine. Tell it to install all the updates and it's a piece of trash.

If humans took a pill for every possible "virus" we would die from all the pills. The updates kill the machines.

People are complaining more and more these days that immediately after an update, their system dies.

So why do we do updates? I only do them when some nazi network commando forces me into it. And it kills the machines.

Same for virus scanners; there are more problems associated WITH them than WITHOUT them. I avoid them to every extent possible.

Any thoughts on this subject from some experienced people?

It's like people in IT have too much control and too little common sense. Or it's all a scam to get more of our money.

Well, my experience with computers goes back > 30 years, too, and I have never had any experiences even remotely like the ones you describe. I have religiously applied every update that came out to MS-DOS 3.30 to 6.22, Windows 3.1, WFWG 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, XP SP1 SP2 SP3 Vista and 7, plus various Linux distros from Slackware 4 to OpenSuSe 11, and my machines have always survived and either worked better or just as well. I tend to use free antivirus - For a long time AVG but these days Avira.

Quote

Any thoughts on this subject from some experienced people?

Personally I think you mistaken to assume that what happens to you happpens to "everybody".

Can't really say I can relate to mgookin.

But Salmon, on the other hand, I relate to almost completely. I have actually had more problems with systems that weren't updated than were.

If you were never, ever going to connect a computer to the internet, and never ever introduce any KIND of media to it (through USB, CDs or DVDs, etc.), then you wouldn't need antivirus. However, your only safe "take it with you" output option would be a printer.

Solve : Capture port data from COM3 on Windows 7 machine?

Answer»

Hello:

I'm a college student doing a self funded project. I have a device (lux meter) connected to COM3. The software which came with it works great but only collects 16,000 lines of data, then throws my data away. I need at least 50,000 lines of data. I would prefer to have unlimited data capability.

I have downloaded dozens of software programs over the past few weeks and NONE of them will collect even one line of data.

I'm trying to figure out how to capture the data directly from COM3 to a txt file. I'm running Windows 7 on the SUBJECT computer.

Does anyone know how I can collect port data from COM3 directly into a txt file?

Thanks in advance. Not sure if this helps:

http://www.virtualserialport.com/products/rs232-data-logger/

it looks like it is what you are looking for, but maybe you already tried it.Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried that program without success.

After you suggested that I did download one of their programs http://www.virtualserialport.com/products/serialmonitor/ then went into firewall to ALLOW it access and was able to get some data. I got 10,000+ records in about 20 seconds. Looks like I need to play with the filters. And of all the data there I can't see anything which is actually the readout of the instrument.

So while it was exciting to finally see data collection, I'm still not where I need to be.

Our Plan B is run two meters - collect just shy of 16,000 records and fire up another laptop/ instrument, save the first one, repeat process until data collection is complete and stitch the files together. It's just a pain doing all that work.

Someone told me that DOS used to provide instant access to all ports and put it in a .txt file. That would work great for me. Do you know if I could put DOS on a MODERN computer and collect a txt file simply?

Solve : Reset Network adapter anoyying problem?

Answer»

Check in your Netgear's logs.

If you don't know how to do this:
1. Open your browser and direct it to 192.168.0.1 (if that doesn't work, try 192.168.1.1).
2. When prompted for a username and password, use "admin" for both (default for Netgear).
3. This will then open the routers settings in the browser. Somewhere in one of these you should find a status log.

The next TIME this happens, open the log and copy and paste whatever it reports as the issue.

Come to think of it, I had a similar PROBLEM with a Netgear ROUTER and my ISP. Finally ended up having to replace the router with a D-Link router. You mean where it says logs on the left hand side underneath content filtering?

And how do I download my Firmware? It says a New version has been found but when I download it, It still says I need to download he new version. Maybe this would solve the problem if I download he LATEST Firmware.Quote from: Imran619 on September 30, 2010, 09:23:10 AM

You mean where it says logs on the left hand side underneath content filtering?

I can't say for sure where it is. Every router is different. You'll have to use your judgement. If there's a button on the left side that says "Logs" that will probably be it.

As for the firmware, I wouldn't mess with it until we identify what the problem is with your connection.

Answer»

Computer: Acer One - OS windows 7 Starter. When I try to connect to a wireless network I get the following PROMPT "ASKING for user name and password - Windows Network Authentication box. Can anyone TELL me what this is and where do I get the required INFOR? All the other computers can connect perfectly well on the same network so it not the router or network. Solve : BACKING UP WINDOWS 7?

Answer»

I got a new Acer laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. It didn't come with a recovery / backup disk. A friend TOLD me that I should create my own backup, although he wasn't sure how EXACTLY it could be done. Any SUGGESTIONS? I assume it is legal to do this.

Check at the Acer site for INSTRUCTIONS...that machine has a hidden recovery partition that CONTAINS alll the needed files.
