Solve : Windows Update stops, error code 937001 comes up?

Answer»

I'm using the automatic Windows update for my Windows vista. When the system installs update KB947821, it creates the back up point, starts to INSTALL, but after a short while it stops and shows the error code 937001. Hence I can't install this update, which I guess is important. I tried to free up over 2GB of space on the disk and tried on DIFFERENT days, but the probelm keeps reoccurring. I'm the only user of this computer, CONNECTING via broadband to the internet.

Operating system: Windows Vista SP2 (I don't have a real Windows installation CD)
Computer: Toshiba Satellite A300 with 3GB RAM
Hard drive: I've got 116GB on my C drive (where Windows is installed) out of which 3,76GB are free
Graphic card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
Sound card: Realtek High Definition Audio
Antivirus: McAfee Total Protection

Thank youQuote

Hard drive: I've got 116GB on my C drive (where Windows is installed) out of which 3,76GB are free

Huh?My thoughts exactly...

However if that free space really means 3.7G free you have discovered your problem.
Windows NEEDS approx 15% free space on any drive.I have deleted some files so now 18GB out of 116GB are available (which is more than 15%) and the problem still keeps occurring. Then you have a serious problem. I have Vista and have never had this even when I have had less than 1gb free.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 is the update and it would seem to be for software.
Can I ASK where did you obtain your windows from?

Have you got any firewall running in the background? Norton? Mcafee?

Is your windows genuine?

Have you got any service packs installed?Incomplete removal of Norton is known to cause this error.

Solve : Adobe Flash Player problem (please help!)?

Answer»

Quote

I think currently, there is only the 32 bit version of flash player. In that case, 64 bit Internet EXPLORER can't use it.

This is inaccurate at best...32bit Flash runs fine on 64bit systems...
Think before hitting the Post button...

Use the Flash uninstaller Here...

Then reboot and reinstall a fresh version...i have tried uninstalling flash and then installing a fresh version numerous times, and it does not work. i have tried system restore, and i have tried switching to 32-bit. nothing is working.Have you tried any web browsers other than IE?

If you go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/, what does that page tell you?IE is the only web browser I have. Do you think if I download another browser, flash would work?Yes. I suggest Firefox since it's an easier transition from IE, but you could ALSO try Chrome or Opera. I have IE8 and Firefox on my laptop. Each browser must be separately updated with Flash. So, having a problem with Flash is one browser does not mean the other browser will have a problem with Flash.

But, here's something to consider regarding Chrome. It's bundled with Flash. In other words, if you download and install Chrome, Flash will is automatically installed at the same time. Yes!!!!! I installed Chrome and it works!!! Thank you so much Quote from: patio on September 21, 2010, 06:03:09 PM

Patio, I said 64 bit internet explorer can't use 32 bit flash player,

I never said that 64 bit windows can't use 32 bit flash player.

Two different things. Did you read that wrong??? Quote

I agree, but I've got to add my two cents worth.

Of all the STUFF I've downloaded over the years, I've had more problems with flash than any other program. I'm sure that's one of the reasons Apple avoids using flash.

I also read today that Adobe stock is at it's lowest level in years.

And it's all related.Quote
Adobe is working with Microsoft to resolve Flash Player installation issues with Internet Explorer 7 Protected Mode on Windows Vista.

Note: This issue may affect users with Flash Player 9.0.28.0 and later. Flash Player 9.0.28.0 is the first version to support Windows Vista

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401499.html

The issue is more about installing and viewing flash contents since IE7 on Windows Vista. If this is resolved in this link, there are some solutions presented that may be related or vary on IE8. on a last note, if everyone were using chrome, then you'd get less issues with flash.

Why Apple doesn't just offer google chrome for people who want flash but otherwise you don't get it. Would that have helped?Quote from: patio on September 22, 2010, 02:33:47 PM
And i said it will...

It can't. In fact no 64-bit program can even load a 32-bit library. That in and of itself is the source of the problem.

Same old stuff that happened with the 16-bit -> 32-bit switch, only now there are a lot more people using PCs on a daily basis.

I meant to say, it already comes with flash so you don't need to install it or upgrade it or whatever. It's done for you automatically.

Solve : cannot open streaming files?

Answer»

I have one computer, with win7 os. I do not want to share files with any network. I want to listen to streaming audio with VLC media player(default).how can I do this as in winxp? I cannot open "streaming" files with anything except win media layer, which is not my preferred application.did you open VLC and then try to open streaming files from within? yes, what I want to do is not use win media player as default for anything, at any TIME for any reason. the problem seems to lie in the fact that win7 uses some sort of "sharing"(network, file etc.) I have ONE computer, and am an old curmudgeon, I do not WISH to share anything with anyone at any time. I just want to listen to radio, and WATCH videos, Just like I could in XP!See screenshot below, maybe it'll help you.

thanks for the info about disabling file sharing, but I still can only use win media player. anything (incl. media player classic, and vlc) "cannot render file". I even UNINSTALLED vlc with Revo UNINSTALLER,and after reboot reinstalled VLC---NO LUCK

Solve : Can't run old games via msdos through windows 7?

Answer»

idk if this THREAD NEEDS to be in this forum
but i figured, im trying to run old games via cmd related to windows 7 ultimate
and the message i get is this

i tried to open it via cmd through windows
anyone have solution for that?If it is a DOS game, DOSBox should be able to run it.Yeah, most of those old DOS games won't run properly from a "DOS" window. Windows won't provide audio, video, and mouse support the way the old DOS programs expect it to come.

Kip's suggestion of DOSBox is a good ONE. It will run most any DOS game in a Windows environment.

Solve : security popup after start-up?

Answer»

Hello everyone ,

I keep getting a security window POPPING up after I start my computer saying that there was no security suite.

Yet my Avast seems to be working fine, only recently I had to do an update, the icon on the bottom bar now is green instead of blue...

So I went to the Vista security centre where you can choose the OPTION "Use own security system" or sth like that...

But the security window is still COMING up.

I'm not worried though, I'm dumb but not paranoid .

What would you say?

Reinstall Avast, update it, and see if that corrects the problem.

Also, jump over the the virus forums, post the requested logs, and let one of the guys over there check to make sure you system is clean.ok, thanks.
Collegues here at work tell me it's an Avast probelm

I think I will deinstall Avast and use Windows Essentials.

Solve : UPGRADES?????

Answer»

Listen Guys, I have this problem. I have recently upgraded to Win 7 and still trying to find may way.

A couple of days ago, as I was closing down my machine, a message appeared telling me that it was installing upgrades 45 in total, so I let it run and it eventually closed down.

When I booted up the next day, I had the message that some upgrades were being installed and not to close down. After a period, my machine fully booted up.

I have had this same 'rigmarole now every day since?

I have used System Restore today, to try and get out of this sequence, but the problem persists??

I have no idea what 'updates' are being installed or from where?

How can I get to find out what is going on and to control my updates please?

Regards
Ivan TeagueHere is one thing you can try.

Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and delete the DataStore.edb file. You probably need to boot to safe mode first before you can delete it.

Datastore.edb file, AFAIK, is to let Windows update figure out what updates your computer still need that's available to you and yes, it's safe to delete. I've done it a few times. After you delete, reboot normally and go to windows update and have it check for updates again.

Maybe, after doing that, you'll be on your way again. (I was thinking maybe you needed to CLEAR that edb file out, 'cuz somehow it seems windows KEEP thinking the update installations were not done or were not successfully done)
Do a manual windows update and see what it says needs to be installed. If it's been through this several times, there should only be one or two updates pending. Those will most likely be the ones that are causing the problems and will make troubleshooting a bit easier if we know what they are.Quote from: michaewlewis on September 27, 2010, 05:09:11 PM

\
I agree.
Normally you can find updates that you installed. You Could always manually uninstall your updates but if your system restore
DOESNT fix the problem then jee.

Anyway you can post more details about your computer?Guys ..... my problem is solved and I thank all of you for your response here!

I'll say one thing 'Bates' has really improved facilities on Win 7. A heck of a lot of stuff can be solved, if one types in the 'Search' commodity. In so far as 'upgrades' are concerned, a whole menu appears which gives one all the options one needs and I have sorted my problem out from here.

I GUESS, like many others, I automatically think solutions are complicated, many are not with this new O. S. I am getting more and more PLEASED with it guys!

Thanx again buddies!

Solve : Back up bother.?

Answer» PERHAPS once again you can help please.
I am running vista home premium 32 bit. I have been backing up files to an old external hard drive every MONTH or so.with no trouble using the windows back up system to the external hard drive designated "I "
I have recently DOWNLOADED the Paragon back up system and decided to back up the entire contents of my C drive to this external hard drive. I formattted the hard drive and commenced the paragon back up.
Unfortunately the external drive was too small and it stopped three quarters of the way through. I cancelled it and tried to re install the original file back up using windows.
As usual I got in bother and it would not recognise the external hard drive, with a fault notice coming up saying fault no Ox80070002 was occurring.
I tried a system restore without success I am stumped and would welcome suggestions, bearing in mind that I am not computer literate and any help offered would need to be in simple terms.
Thanks in anticipation.
I suppose you could try (if it's a USB) drive to remove the drive info by going to control panel then device manager finding universal serial bus controllers click on that then find the device within that right click on it and choose uninstall.
Then it may be best to reboot and when you have fully booted back up re-attach the drive and see if the drivers etc install and the drive becomes recognised.

If not:

That code may be related to a 'failed backup'. The only thing I could suggest is a clean format of the external drive and make sure that the drive is big enough for the backup.
Thank you Mulreay for your reply.
Firstly to your last paragraph. I have done a clean format of the external hard drive.
The problem was that that hard drive was apparently not big enough to accept what I tried to load into it so I cancelled it. I then left the Paragon program and went back and tried to install my files only, onto that hard drive (they were on it berore I formatteed it. ) with the Vista back up program, when I kept getting the Back up failed message and the number quoted.
I tried going to a different USB socket and got the same result. The Backup failed message.
2. Would the paragon programme conflict with the Windows one?
3 Every time I tried to active the back up a pop up APPEARED notifying that it was searching for drives.

I tried to follow your instructions in your first paragraph, and got as far as opening theUSB drive list.
As stated I am a compluter numpty. Could you tell me how to locate the specific one that requires attention as per your instructions as I have tried to copy and paste the page showing the drives into this page without success.
Thanks again for your interest.

I never Like to use the built in backup. Ive always had problems.
I normaly only like to back up fully only once then i use a 3rd party software to do the REST.

Solve : Please help my vaio turns on but will not load!?

Answer»

I have A vaio (model PCG-L2M) when I turn on my laptop it sems to be working the vaio screen comes up as usual followed by a loading bar with Microsoft corporation underneath.
Usually this would be followed by the log in screen however instead I just get a blank screen with the mouse arrow and nothing else.

This OCCURRED over a week ago and I shutdown my computer as usual and the next day when I tried to turn it on this occurred.

I have tried starting in safe mode
I have unplugged etc.
Taken out the battery...

but I still get nothing

I can use av mode (where you can watch DVDs without turning on the laptop) so I don't THINK it is a
fault with the screen

I have had my laptop for around a year and a half

Any help would be much APPRECIATED OK did your laptop come with a CD for windows? If it did put this in your drive and start the computer and choose 'Startup Repair'.

If it didn't you may have a hidden partition on your laptop with the recovery on so... when on boot up repeatedly press F8 before the MS logo and then launch 'startup repair'.
Let us know how you get on. Hi thank you my laptop didn't come with A cd I pressed f8 and it did come up with start up repair I tried this but still have the same problem.
I can also get up a screen when pressing f2 that is a setup utility with tabs including boot advanced main security and exit I don't know if that is any help?

Thank you Try to avoid the F2 option for the time being. Did it give you options when the repair failed? Like other methods of recovery?Hi I tried the repair option again and it said that my laptop can not be automatically fixed.
When I press F8 these are the options I get:

advanced boot options
Choose advanced options for microsoft windows vista

repair your computer

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt

Enable boot logging
enable low resolution video
last known good configuration
directory services restore mode
debugging mode
disable automatic restart on SYSTEM failure
disable driver signature enforcement

Start windows normally

Thank you so much for your time and help

I would try 'last known good config' firstYep I tried that but it says I have no previous good configurations and no previous restore dates?
Any ideas?
Thank you It's sounding more like you need to do the thing we dread the most 'the full re-install' as there there are more qualified people to explain I will have a word with one or two of them and see if they can help. I don't want you doing something unnecessary.
Give me 10 minutes please. Any luck? Or should I take my laptop to a computer repair shop?
Thanks Just asking someone now please stand by.I'd suggest a re-install too. You could possibly use a bootable Linux CD (Live CD) to boot the computer and copy your data to a flash drive/External hard drive before reinstalling Windows. Thanks camerongray.

As you can see we seem to think the re-install is the option. Unless you can follow camerongray's option with Linux.Repair Install of Vista...Quote from: patio on July 05, 2010, 07:11:50 PM

Solve : Win SP3?

Answer»

I have so far resisted installing SP3 and am looking for input: a) are there any reported problems from people who upgraded their computers from SP2 to SP3, b) are there any benefits to SP3 over a fully updated SP2? Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks. a) I have been running sp3 since the end of April & it works just fine.
b) It is alleged that XP SP3 is faster. Mine is certainly not slower.
I've not had any issues with SP3.
The main benefit over SP2 is NAP.
An overview is here.
Hope this helps. Thanks Calum and Dias!

I had read the MS link before but wanted to wait until SP3 had been "in the wild" for awhile so that I could benefit from your experience!

NAP has no benefit for me (that I can see) but absent any negative experiences, I guess that I might as WELL install it. I keep hearing, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," in the back of my head, though!

Thanks again for your input!NAP has no benefit for me either.
I installed SP3 partly for testing purposes and partly because I wanted to START from a fresh install, and really didn't want to install the few hundred patches since SP2 was released.
There have been some issues with SP3, especially regarding AMD machines. I would read up on the problems others have encountered in case you are likely to run into them before installing SP3, and don't forget to back up if you go ahead, just in case.Quote from: Calum on June 08, 2008, 02:50:17 PM

Ditto the "I don't want to spend another hour or two updating SP2 after I just spent an hour or two re-installing!"

Whoops - running ASUS A8NE with AMD 64 x2 4800+; I'll do more checking.

Thanks.Seems like most of the AMD problems were caused by OEM machines. I built mine so went ahead and installed SP3 (with fingers crossed!) Zero problems so far.

I also updated my wife's HP laptop - came with Vista and 1 GB RAM, so I installed XP on it in a dual boot. Laptop is Intel and had no problem with install there either.

Thanks for your responses.I have Service Pack 3 on three of my machines. No problems so far.@carbondudeoxide: Thanks for the reply.Good to hear it's running OK for you.
I've since formatted and no longer run XP Home or Pro so I can't say it's still running fine for me, but in the time I did have SP3 installed I had no issues at all on any of my machines. In a world which contains Norton Ghost and cheap DVD burners & disks, there is no reason not to to try it.You know, I've been thinking about this! And it goes something like this...I'll use Acronis (NOT Norton!) and let it have access to my harddrives at a very low LEVEL and, basically, not worry about it; I'll let Avast! antivirus engage my system at a very low level to protect against rootkits and, basically, not worry about it; I'll let CCleaner do its thing and, basically, not worry about it; I'll download utilities and use them and, basically, not worry about it; BUT, when Microsoft wants to do something to my system, I get scared as *censored*!

Go figure!Just because you believe it doesn't mean they're not out to get you...Quote from: patio on June 09, 2008, 02:11:00 PM

Solve : Having Major Problems Staying Connected To Internet With Laptop!?

Answer»

I bought my Mom a Laptop this past Christmas. It is a Dell Inspiron 1501 with VISTA Home Basic. The computer works fine, but it WILL NOT stay connected to the Internet. We have Dial-Up and I also have a Desktop that is connected and the Desktop stays connected to the Internet. But, the Laptop usually disconnects after a few minutes. Sometimes it will stay connected for an hour or two, but 95% of the time, it only stays connected for a few minutes. I have contacted my ISP, however they don't offer Tech Support for Vista. Would that have something to do with it? Could it be possible that since they don't have support for Vista, that Vista is causing problems with the ISP? I have also checked the modem and it says that it is working properly. I also contacted Dell and downloaded the updates for the modem, but it doesn't seem like they were installed. Can ANYONE help me with this problem?

Also, I have downloaded the updated drivers twice, but the date is still the date of the old ones. It is like they aren't downloading. Will uninstalling the existing ones and THEN downloading the updated ones make them install correctly? Thanks in advance! Is it still under warranty? If it is, Dell should help you with this. They have their own forum for help with Dell products http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/?~ck=ln&lnki=0&nav=true
Does this machine have any antivirus programs installed?1. Is the laptop connecting to the net by a phone line, or a network cable connected to the desktop?

oops... just figured out what u meant.

it may be a problem with the modem or ms vista. MS Article

Yes, the Laptop is under warranty until DECEMBER. I have called Dell several times and have done everything they have told me to do, but it still hasn't helped. My Mom is still having problems with it. And, now she has came across some more problems: She can't get FireFox to work correctly and has uninstalled and re-installed it, but it just keeps loading the page and doesn't get finished. Also, when she gets e-mails that are in notepad, some of them are unreadable. They just have mixed characters everywhere.

I called Dell a while back about the Laptop and told them I just wanted a new one, because it is under warranty until December of this year. However, they told me that it has to be WITHIN the first 21 days (I think) to be eligible for a refund. I have done everything they said, including downloading updates, etc., but NOTHING is working! Is there ANYTHING I can do? My Mom is having online classes and needs her Laptop working. If Dell can't fix it, would they be required to replace it, even if we have had it longer than the 21 days? Please, if anyone can help, I would totally appreciate it. Thanks!
If you both live at 2 different locations, bring the laptop to your location and try it on your dial up. If it behaves, then its likely a bad connection.

If you live in teh same house hold, then plug the laptop in to your dial-up cable that normally is connected to your desktop and see if you have better connectivity.

Bad phone cords, bad (old copper lines ) can cause problems if the lines are from the 70's or 80's or even older. A good indicator of poor lines is a lower than normal sync speed in which the ISP is hosting a 56k service and you are connected at only 33k, 26k, 19K, or even worse 14k.

My house has old 1970's telephone poles leading to it and up until broadband came to my area, my maximum connection was 26k on a good day, but usually 19k .... and boy was that painfull!!!!! ISP was hostinga 56k service and I was not able to get full bandwidth, and it would disconnect a lot since the lines were poor and noisy.Quote from: DaveLembke on June 04, 2008, 04:15:47 PM

Solve : Cannot set up network with my new vista computer!?

Answer»

I bought a new compaq e2180 desktop with windows vista home premium, 2gb ram 500GB hard drive two weeks ago. I have a laptop and a vonage phone and a dlink switch to connect all three to. This was working with the old xp computer. The new computer will not connect to the internet thru the dlink switch. Please help.Did you USE any sort of Mac Address filtering? Does your D-Link switch provide a dynamic IP address, or do you have to set up a static IP address?

Is the D-Link switch just a modem that connects to, say, cable, satellite, or DSL? Or is there a box/modem before the router?

Is the desktop CONNECTED by a ETHERNET cable, or is it using a Wireless connection?

Did you try using a different ethernet cable, or a different plugin on the switch?

Okay, on the Vista computer, press the Start key (or click the Start menu) and type:
cmd
and press ENTER.

Type:

ipconfig /release

wait for that to finish...

then type:

ipconfig /renew

and wait for that to finish...

See if it works now.

Solve : vista never installed but taking over?

Answer»

I have a hp m7640n 1 1/2 years old -- came with XP installed - at the time vista was not out but I could upgrade free I ordered cds but never installed -- I just got hughes internet and it is soooo slow the tech said instead of xp vista is opening programs and hughes is xp only so it is fighting between the two -- no one seems to be able to help me needs to help me turn vista off so just xp will work -- hughes just keeps telling me to clean catch defrag delete cookies and history fustrated here
thanks
Welcome to the forum...

If Vista was never installed...why would it be taking over anything?

Your internet connection could be slow for several reasons...the ISP, phone, cable lines...corrupt or missing files...MALWARE infection.

Hughes...is that dialup or broadband?hughes is a dish and supose to be fast I have scaned for spy and mal -- the tech that installed said vista is trying to open it but hughes reconizes xp not vistaWas Vista installed...or at least...was an attempt ever made to install Vista?

From what I can gather...the tech is telling you their SOFTWARE is not compatible with Vista...is this correct?

Then again...if Vista was never installed...or attempted, then I think the Hughes tech is just trying to pass the buck.

Problems with satellite connections are many...positioning, weather, etc., etc. Not entirely one of the best broadband connections...if you know what I mean.

However...if Vista was installed as an upgrade to XP, then your network adapter may be causing the problem. It's possible the correct driver hasn't been installed or is corrupt.

Again...this will depend on whether or not Vista was or wasn't installed on this sytem.vista was never installed or attempted -- If you don't mind...could you please visit the following link to TEST your internet connection speeds: http://www.speedtest.net/

Once completed...you'll have the opportunity to create a forum link. Just copy and paste the link in your next post.

It should look something like this:

download 188
upload 123
think i am going to CALL tomorrow and tell them to fix it or take it outThat would be a good place to start...

Let us know what they have told you...and then please post back to let us know the outcome...okay?

BTW...those speeds are terrible for a satellite connection.yes suppose to be at least 600 I don't know who this Tech is or how long he's been doing this but for him to state that Hughes will run on XP only and not Vista is ludicrous...Surely is:
http://www.ussatellite.com/hughesnet-faq.html
Quote

Are there computer system requirements for HughesNet?
Yes, however the majority of computers out there today can handle the speeds of the HughesNet system. HughesNet is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. The minimum requirements are:

* Windows 98SE or higher (including VISTA) or Mac OS 10.1 or higher, and
* Network capability (10/100 Ethernet pre-equipped)

Solve : burning cd?

Answer»

Recently started having problems burning a cd. I have videos I wish to burn to a cd with the burn wizard in W XP Prof. I am to the point where they are ready to burn, but when I click on burn these files to CD the trouble starts. You click and it tells you to put a disk in Drive D. Well the disk is in the drive with the door shut, and
nothing happens, it keeps telling me to put a disk in. I am going nuts. Does anyone know what is going on??? Is it mechanical or what? The hardware is Cyber DRv CW078D DVD/CD-RWWhat media re you using? CD R...or CD R/W?the D drive is read and write, the E drive is just a read only.I mean...what type of CD are you using...a CD R, or a CD R/W?oh I specially went out and bought CD that are used for videos only. Not audio or data. So I don't know what the problem could be. I assume they are formatted before you buy them. Right??I checked the CD says RW on it.I'm sorry...I have to apologize. I have been referring to CDs when you are attempting to burn videos to your DVD drive using Windows built in copier.

I went back to read the original post, again.

Unfortunately, neither Windows XP or Vista supports this. To copy files to your DVD, you need to use another authored software program.

This software should suffice: http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/DeepBurner/deepburner.htmlAlso...

Are you using CDs...or DVDs...there's a big difference.THANK you so much, msn support did not even come up with that
information, wonder who they are hiring??they say dvd+rw, so would it still not work??? I guess not, huh???Download that freeware I listed in my previous post: DeepBurner...it's free and will do exactly what you're looking to do.

It gets high marks in my book, friend.

Keep us posted and let us know if this software is sufficient for your needs.

BTW...the DVD R/W disc will work just fine...as long as it's in the correct drive. While I am on the subject you said XP won't handle the DVD's,the last thing I burned were very old photos of family and they were on CD's and had no
problems, does Windows do photos? Aren't they much LIKE still videos ???I know that sounds like a stupid question but I had not tried burning photos in quite awhile
so don't know if it will happen again. At 73 this is getting a little to much so I guess
I will try photos and see what happens, and I SURE hope it won't happen again, thx
for your help appreciate very much, will post what happens in a day or so one way
or the other as to what happens. Again Thx.You're more than WELCOME...and I certainly think it'll work better for you.

Yes...photo images and videos are two different animals. While XP and Vista will let you copy and paste files such as images, documents and/or data files to a CD...it's not the same as burning DVDs...or videos.

Unfortunately...with the advent of DVDs...copying and pasting and/or the dragging and dropping of video files to a DVD is not supported by either operating system.

Microsoft suggests you invest in a separate software program to handle this.

That's why I recommended that free software...DeepBurner. It'll do exactly what you want it to...and best of all...it's FREE!

We'll keep this thread open for you...waiting for the results.

73? That's great! May you live 73 more...all healthy happy years!thank you by the way I am a woman That's okay...I won't hold it against you...

BTW...I'm a man...hopefully, you won't hold that aginst me, either.

All my best...

-STEVE

Solve : Will NOT Bootup!?

Answer»

you have an attitude problem and when broni or saviour was helping you all you did is whine and complain What the *censored* are you talking about? I didn't whine and complain about anythng.
If fact, in one post I even said that it's hard to talk on here because you can't hear the tone of one's voice. Just because it is taken one way, in no way means it was given that way.

I have never disrespected anyone in here until I was disrespected. And by the way, I think it's great that Broni is able to 'vent' and be allowed to say what he thinks and it's ok, but if I say anything in return, I'm the bad guy.

Broni, you need to grow up and get some maturity.Quote from: woodworks on June 04, 2008, 06:18:21 PM

What about you Saviour, are you going to take the same path Broni did, or are you willing to help me.

It's a shame that a lot of you people think the sun rise's and set's only for you. Just because you have more the avarage knowledge about computers, you think we are at your beck and call.

I am so dis heartened by your attitudes.

Woodworks...based on the above comment, my response is this:

Saviour...signing off!Which part of that comment?

The part that puts you in the same catagory as broni? Or the part that puts you in the same catagory as you think the sun rises and set's on you?

I actually would have put you in neither one. I thought that you would rise above that and be a man.

I have been accused of whining and crying and complaining and having an attitude through all of this, but in reality, it's you guys that have the attitude. How many times have I thanked you guys?

If I ask a question, you guys go burserk. BE PATIENT!!! That is a sign of immaturity. All I am doing is asking questions. What it shows is your LACK of proper upbringing. Especially broni! This is not the first time he has disrespected me. I can tell by the way you guys talk to me that your all under the age of 30. I would even fenture to say much much closer to 25 or younger. That generation has a total different understanding of what respect means.

What started this little tirade from him is the post where I said I was waiting on you to help me since you were the expert. That in itself was a COMPLIMENT. And as far as not understanding the instructions, I didn't understand them all. He flew off and said I was crying about it. No, I was stating a fact. I spent most of the day before and after I posted that post going to all the places he gave me LINKS to after he 'vented'. I had already been there and did what they said. I had already done everything both of you guys said. That is why I said I was waiting on your help. You took that post offensivly because you never got back to me.
And as far as that goofball brett74 goes, I never said anything to him before this. Why would he want to act like he is all that when he had nothing in it whatsoever?? Because he is a jerk that just wants to get his two cents in. There is NO other reason.

Pal, you do what you want. I can in all good consicence know in my heart I did nothing to disrespect any of you untill after you guys jumped on me. I have done nothing to offend you. You may have taken it that way, but when people are not able to see one's face and hear there tone of voice, it is very difficult to grasp the true meaning of something. It is just too bad and very sad that you have people taking it as something disrespctful.

I really expected more from you, but I'm no one that you need to impress, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Enjoy your life. I wish and hope the best for all of you.

woodworks

just like what broni and saviour said we can't be here 24/7 and this IS NOT a 911 computer forum we have families and other needs to tend to Buddy, what the [emailprotected]#$% does that have to do with ANYTHING?

I have no problem with you guys not sitting there waiting to answer my every post!
I have said NOTHING about that and care NOTHING about it! See, your going off on something that makes no sense at all. It has NO bearing whatsoever on this subject.

In fact, can you even tell me why your posting anything at all in here?? You have had nothing to do with this subject right from the start! I didn't see where anyone had even asked you to come and put in your two cents worth. Btw, let me give you a refund, because it isn't even worth two cents.

You really do need to mind your own business! Nothing in this whole intire conversation has anything to do with you!

And NO, that is NOT being disrespectful to you, that is STATING A FACT!!! A fact that you can't even honestly dispute!hey you wanna know why I left is because of yoru attitude that's why i didn't help you and also i've been coming alot longer than you and you were insulting my friends and i was just sticking up for them that's why i'm here my advice take your DARN computer to a computer shopGrow up kid!

How did you know if I had an attitude if you didn't help me?
Your about an idiot! Take that for an insult!

If anyone can go back and honestly say I had an attitude then I'd say ok, but you know what? They can NOT HONESTLY say that.

If you think your so smart, show where I had an attitude!!! Actually show it!!!

If I were cussing and saying you guys should bend over backwards for me, or that I should go somewhere else where they KNEW what they were doing, that is an attitude!

What I did was ask questions and you people don't like that! Is it because your afraid that someone might learn to do something without your help??

So if you can't actually and honestly show where I copped an attitude, then get off my case!!!This topic doesn't serve any computer related purposes, so I'm closing it.

Solve : Blue screen in Vista since uninstalling Jetico?

Answer»

My Vista Home Premium 32-bit laptop (HP dv9207us, 2GB RAM, )will not run except in Safe Mode since uninstalling Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.34 beta through Control Panel/Programs and Features using their included "BC Uninstall" on 9-14-07.

Windows CRASHED during the uninstall, with Blue Screen showing "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and:
Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x0000000A (ox00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x823A4DAE).
I always get this blue screen when trying to start Vista in Normal mode.
I have a Vista Ultimate upgrade install disk and I wonder if it would CORRECT everything while installing or if this would just compound my problem.

Here is the Sequence of Events:
9-14-07
Uninstall Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0 through Control Panel/Programs and Features
(Jetico Uses "BC Uninstall" to remove program).
Windows crashed during uninstall. (First Blue Screen).
Windows restarted automatically, OK.
Ran Control Panel/Programs and Features again.
Jetico was still there, so I uninstalled it again.
The uninstall froze. I waited a long time, then shut down the computer normally.
Tuned on computer. Blue Screen crash and auto-restart.
I restarted in Safe Mode with Networking.
Blue Screen crash and auto-restart.
I restarted in plain Safe Mode, under a different Administrator Account, Successfully.
9-15-07
Still in Safe Mode, Ran Control Panel/Programs and Features again.
Jetico was still listed, with the mesage, "May have already been uninstalled", so I deleted it from the program list.
Tried to restart Windows in normal mode (Blue Screen again).
Restarted in plain Safe Mode, under my own Administrator Account, Successfully.
Rolled back an OEM modem driver update I made on 9-12-07.
Tried to restart Windows in normal mode (Blue Screen again).
Restart with F8 - "Repair your Computer" option.
Run Startup Repair - Result: "Could not detect a problem" and "Boot status shows that the OS booted successfully".
Run Memory Diagnostic Tool - Result: "No problems".
Restart to Normal: Blue Screen.
Restart with F8 - Selected Boot logging.
Restart to Normal: Blue Screen.
Restarted in plain Safe Mode, under my own Administrator Account, Successfully.
Set Virtual Memory to No Paging File, in case file was corrupt.
Restarted in plain Safe Mode, under my own Administrator Account, Successfully.
Reinstated paging File: Min. 3584mb, Max. 3584mb.
Restart to Normal: Blue Screen.
Restart with F8 - "Last Known Good Configuration"
Restart to Normal: Blue Screen.
Restart with F8 - Debugging Mode (I don't KNOW how to use this, so did nothing).
Restart to Normal: Blue Screen.
Restarted in plain Safe Mode, under my own Administrator Account, Successfully.
Ran System Info/Hardware Resources
IRQ's: All Devices OK
Conflicts/Sharing: No problems seen.
Disconnected all USB devices except wireless mouse and external hard drive.
Ran System Restore - Restore to most recent restore point (saved by System on 8/20/07 @ 10:09:56 PM.)
Restart to Normal: Blue Screen.
Turn off machine.
9-21-07
No USB devices connected except wireless mouse transmitter.
Turned on machine to F8 - Safe Mode with Networking.
Blue Screen crash and auto-restart.
Restarted in plain Safe Mode, under my own Administrator Account, Successfully.
System Message: "System Restore [from 9-15] did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not CHANGED."
Details: "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. You might want to try System Restore again and choose a different Restore Point."
I'd rather not use an earlier Restore Point because of changes to the system since then. I'd rather fix the source of the problem.
I am hoping someone may be able to help me recover my system! Thanks.Download, install and run CCleaner:

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Do not install the Yahoo Toolbar.

You need only use the default settings...

POST back with your results, please...Can you boot successfully in safe mode ?
If so try re-installing jetico and uninstalling it again. Thanks everyone for the tips and your time.
I did try the solutions proposed, short of re-installing jetico or Windows, with no positive result.
I tried System Restore, but it wouldn't work because I had been including the HP Recovery partition in it, and it was filled up.
I ended up restoring the C drive from an Acronis backup from Aug. 18 and it then worked perfectly.
In the future I will not be relying on System Restore, although it now works since including only the C drive in restore points.
Thanks again.Good news to hear you have Acronis...you won't need System Restore
My Schedule:
Every Sunday @3:AM full Acronis restore...backed up to secondary partition on IDE2.
Monday: verify latest Acronis images.
This gives me a weekly backup on another drive other than the boot drive in case of failure...
Once a month i select the latest backup and burn it to DVD and store it off site.

Worst case scenario i am no further than 3 weeks away from being back up and running in about 20 minutes with all my data and programs intact.
Even if 2 hard drives fail at the same time...

Solve : Windows XP setup freezes?

Answer»

I have a relatively new HP a6000n PC which came with Vista pre-loaded. I am trying to install XP. It gets up to the first restart, after formatting the hard drive, and when it says "Restarting..." in the gray bar at the bottom it freezes. I hold the power button to turn the computer off, then press it again to turn it on. It shows the XP logo and the blue bar at the bottom. After about 10 SECONDS the bar STOPS MOVING and the computer freezes. What is wrong?OK, never mind. I installed it somehow by accident. I have a new problem however. When I tell the computer to shut down or go into HIBERNATE, it does everything normally, and then when it's supposed to turn off it says something like "It is now safe to turn off your computer" How do I fix this? It's very annoying because i have to hold the power button down for like 7 seconds every time i want to shut the computer off.Does your XP include Service Pack 1,or 2 ?You should always install the older OS first when dual booting OS's.

Read this for an answer to your question about your error message. I hope it helps.Never mind, I got it working. BTW, I wasn't trying to dual-boot, I just wanted XP.Ok sorry. I see that now in your first post that you said after you formatted it. My bad. Did you fix this one yet though?

"It is now safe to turn off your computer"

Solve : vista weird freezing problem or could it be my bluetooth?...?

Answer»

So I have Windows Vista Home Basic, I had my computer for about 4 month and it never froze before. When I leave it sit usually it will go to screen saver and when I move the mouse and it ok. But acouple days ago the battery for my bluetooth keyboard died which I replaced but EVERYTIME I start up my computer it takes a long TIME for my computer to find my keyboard and now if I leave my computer to sit for alittle bit without activity it will go to screensaver but I wont come back if I move my mouse or it will come back but I CANT move my mouse. I DONT have sleep mode on either. So is there away that its my bluetooth not being found? or could there be a real problem. I'm not very good with this stuff...If the keyboard / mouse combo came with drivers try re-installing them and then re-boot.

Solve : help with windows xp mce!?

Answer»

That would be 20 DVD's on a dual-layer burner...yeah, that's a lot of dual layered dvds I don't have. so might as well buy another 300gb drive, install a new copy of windows and use the other one for storage. I will never mess with partition magic again. IT SUCKS!I'll agree and disagree at the same time.
Anytime i have used it after the fact to re-size/move or create new partitions i have had problems...
The key to partitioning strategies is to do it before the fact i.e. before any OS is installed...for those purposes i find FDISK more than adequate but i'll probably get laughed at here...
I've even backed up a dual-boot system and wiped both drives and started over to get things situated the way i wanted because i was adding another drive and a Linux distro as well....more work but that machine still purrs like a kitten.
I've had people say they were able to re-size partitions and move them etc. with no loss of data but i've also had people TELL me their 8 cylinder pickup gets 32 miles to the gallon on the freeway...you get my drift.Quote from: patio on October 13, 2007, 07:31:55 PM

Not by me. I agree with you 100% as well. I have sucessfully resized partitions that had data on them e.g. I increased my XP system primary partition from 10 to 15 GB a few MONTHS ago, and I shrunk a 140 GB secondary partition to 120 so I could make ones for SuSe and its swap. BUT I wouldn't dream of doing anything like that unless I have either Ghosted or otherwise duplicated (e.g. burned) the data involved. I have had too many cases where something went wrong to take any chances.

That means, realistically, that any time I have more data and/or OS than alternative places to put it, I do not have the flexibility to make CHANGES that I may need and also I'm vulnerable to data loss.

Ok, I just bought a 500gb western digital WD5000AAKS hard drive. I intend to install windows vista premium on it. How do you guys recommend I set it up. should I create 2 partitions before I install windows, and should I copy my corrupted hard drive to the new one? One thing to point out is that my corrupted drive is like 2 or 3 months old, so it's in very good shape. Any Suggestions would really help, thanks.HI Eman 619

I'll advice you that before you install anything in your new 500GB HD partition it first into 2 parts, that puts you on a SAFE side. After you have partitioned it then install OS on the partition of your choice. After this is done reinstall your old HD and as a slave and then you can start the copy and move of your files. After this, then you will want to format your old HD, then you will want to partition it again into two parts.

If i were you that's what i would do, cause this HD crush alot and its better to loose one partition then the whole HD. I have a corrupted HD that i cant install any OS but I'm using it as my slave to store data in it and it works fine.

Good luck dude. 500 + 300 = 800GB for what.Yeah I split the 500gb ito half, installed windows on the new one and am using my old one as a slave. Everything is working fine. why the 800gb.? Well I saw a 300 for like $110 and the 500 for $130, so I said what the heck. Also that way I have 2 240gb partitions, which is pretty cool. Thanks for all the advise though!

Solve : Can't view Internet after Internet Explorer 7 update...?

Answer»

I a Dell Inspiron E1505. Just recently, I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. After IE7 automatically downloaded some upgrades several days later, I have been unable to VIEW windows...

Here's the kicker...I can get online, but every site I GO to, I'm "unable to view the page". There's the typical blurb about how to check and fix, then at the BOTTOM it says "cannot find sever DNS error..."

The strange thing is, I can use my IM and can see that I am clearly connected to the internet. I just can't view internet pages.

I've talked to DEll, and because my 30 day warrantee has run out, it will cost $250 to get support.

I've also reset my defaults and removed IE7.
I've tryed loading Foxfire, but it does the same thing.
The COMPUTER won't let me retrieve from a prior date because to many down loads have been done.

Because of these IE7 updates, I think something has been altered in my computer programming that won't let me view internet pages.

Can someone HELP?! Is this XP or Vista that you're using? Do have the service pack installed? Do you have the latest updates? What do you mean by "won't let me retrieve"?

Solve : disable the ease of access button?

Answer»

Hello
The download software from softpedia to disable the EASE of ACCESS button, doe's not support windows vista sp2.

Unless i have missed it somewhere is there a version now that doe's support this.

I did not know that this button, can mess with your computer even when locked, until the little lad showed me that you can

So is there a way you can disable it if you have
Vista home premium sp2.

Thanks guysWhere do you have this button?Start/Control Panel/Ease of Access Center has all the settings...Quote from: patio on July 05, 2009, 10:44:00 AM

Start/Control Panel/Ease of Access Center has all the settings...

hi, patio

The only settings that i can see for this is this check box here, but i am noy sure what this doe's.

i did read you have to rename the utilman.exe file in the System32 folder , but in cases this doe's not work

(windows vista home premium)
Unfortunately, we can’t remove the button, but we can make it disabled so nobody can actually use it. Download and unzip the software, and then right-click on the setup file and choose Run as Administrator.

Choosing to run it as administrator is such an important step that the software will remind you regardless.

You’ll finally get to the screen where you can click the Disable button to make the button not work anymore. If you wanted to re-enable it, just run the setup again and click the Enable button.

And now you’ll get this message anytime you click on the Ease of Access button.

Sorry I'm not very good at adding pics inbetween text so the pics attached are relevant to each paragraph.

Well Broni, i am SURPRISED, its not a big issue but if i could have disabled it i would have, there is one thing i have not tryed yet and that is

Quote from: carlrowley1 on July 06, 2009, 04:39:53 PM

but i will probably just leave it alone now .
I did try searching ALSO, but i could not find anything also.
So thanks for trying anywayI'm surprised there's no Group Policy built-in or custom .admx file to do this...You have 24 hours to find it How about less?

I didn't find a Group Policy to stop it. The closest I could find through Group Policy was Software Restrictions. RESTRICTING the file C:\Windows\System32\utilman.exe stops it from being run while logged in, but not on the logon screen.

However...

Changing the permissions on utilman.exe works wonders!

1) Take ownership of the file first!!! VERY important!!! Make sure that you make your user account or a group that your account is a member of the owner!!!

2) Remove all permissions to the file (yes, that includes Administrators, Users, TrustedInstaller, and SYSTEM). You'll get a warning saying that nobody can access the file and only the owner can change permissions. Go ahead and click "Yes."
NOTE: If there are minimal permissions that can be assigned without allowing the button to work, I'll find out shortly and edit this post.

3) Reboot.

4) Try clicking the Ease of Access button on the logon screen.

5) ??

6) Profit! (aka: nothing happens)

Now, to mass deploy something like this, you'll probably have to use a batch file containing a for loop, a list of computers in a text file, connect to \\computername\c$\windows\system32, and run a series of icacls commands against utilman.exe that would allow the domain admin to take ownership and nuke all the permissions on each utilman.exe file.

EDIT: I've tried only the SYSTEM account with Read permissions, and that restores functionality to the button. Same with only Users Read and Administrators Read. So what I said still stands: NUKE 'EM ALL!!!! You might be able to get away with granting only one individual user account access, though...Quote from: killerb255 on July 08, 2009, 08:03:22 PM

Solve : My HP laptop freezes at startup.?

Answer»

Every time I start up my HP Pavilion dv6000, it loads up to the desktop, and it looks fine, and the mouse moves, but I can't click on anything and everything's unresponsive. It immediately freezes before I have a chance to do anything about it.

And that's basically it. I can't do anything. And I don't remember downloading/installing anything yesterday, unless it was something automatic. I'm typing this on another computer, obviously. So any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Same in Safe Mode? No, it doesn't freeze up in safe mode, but I don't know what to do in safe mode...Hi,

Please disable all start-up items in safe-mode. here is how.

In the Start Search field, type msconfig , and press Enter . The System Configuration window opens.

OR

Press and hold Windows logo KEY on keyboard and press R. It will open Run Window. Type the following in the open box and click OK

MSconfig

The System Configuration window opens.

Please click on Startup tab

Remove the check mark from all entries.

Then click on Apply, Close and Please click on Exit without restart.

When the system restarts, you will see a message about System Configuration Utility. Click in the box for "Do not Show this message" and then click on OK.

Now check in normal mode whether issue persists. If not, you can conclude that one of the start up programs is causing this issue.

to find out which entry is causing this issue, enable 2 or 3 entry in mscofig and check. try the steps till you find the entry which is causing this issue.

Alright well after trying everything I could do, I ended up just doing a system restore, so now I have my computer back and at least alive and responsive.

but several days before my HP laptop started freezing, it started making a strange noise, every once in a while, on the left side, upper left side of the keyboard. It's like a little motor or something and sometimes, for no real reason at all, it starts making noise, like a ROLLING "rrrrrrrrr", and it VARIES in loudness.
It never used to do that... what is it? Should I be concerned? You said, keyboard noise?well, under the keyboard, inside the computer..... i guess i could've made that more obvious. What do you mean? You keep your keyboard on computer case, or what?i do'nt know it and can't read itQuote

Solve : Log in screen won't appear?

Answer»

Hi all - when I boot up my COMPUTER everything is fine. However, once the vista symbol is shown the screen goes black instead of the log in screen appearing. The mouse arrow can be seen and the screen works fine but the log in screen just can't be seen. Everything works fine in safe mode.

It's happened twice before but over time, after much restarting and simply waiting a day or two, the log in screen always reappears and things goes back to normal. I then did a system restore and everything appeared to have gone back to normal with the log in reappearing just fine.

However, I left the computer last NIGHT for probably around 20 minutes and when I GOT back, the screen had gone completely blank with only the arrow working. I restarted it and the log-in screen won't appear again. The vista symbol looks a bit narrow and squeezed though. I did another system restore in safe mode but it hasn't worked.

I think this all started when I tried to update my graphics driver to play The Sims 3 ( ) but I undid it when I did a system restore. My moniter SEEMS to work fine.

I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Solve : Recovery Drive question?

OK, here's what it says.

Low Disk Space.
You are RUNNING out of disk space on Recovery (D:)
To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary
files, click here.

When I click there, it offers disk clean up, which only offers to clean an already empty RECYCLING bin.

Yes, I was using automatic backup, and I am assuming that system restore was already set to D. I didn't know that I had to choose which drive.
Quote

Is system restore set for drive D?
tekkite07:

Please do the following, since we're not going to get ENOUGH information from you any other way to be able to help:

1) Download the following tool from Microsoft's website:

DIRUSE:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927229

Scroll to the middle of the page and download the link called "Directory Disk Usage (DIRUSE)".

2) Install DIRUSE. Yes, I know this is a Windows 2000 Resource Kit tool, but it DOES work with Vista.

3) Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories.

4) Right-click Command Prompt, then left-click Run As Administrator. Click "Allow" when User Account Control nags you.

5) On the black screen, type in the following EXACTLY as you see it, pressing Enter after each line:
C:
cd\
cd "C:\Program Files\Resource Kit"
diruse /s /m /q:100 /l /* d:\ >C:\DIRUSEREPORT.txt

You WILL get a blinking cursor for a short period of time. Wait for the C:\Program Files\Resource Kit prompt to come back. Once it's done...

6) Type in the following EXACTLY as you see it, pressing Enter after each line:
dir d:\ >C:\DIRREPORT.txt

7) Attach both the C:\DIRUSEREPORT.txt and the C:\DIRREPORT.txt to your reply. Don't post the contents of both of these--just attach them. Otherwise, it'll be a HUGE wall-o-text, and our short attention spans here can't handle it very well.

In case you're wondering what those two commands do:

The DIRUSE command and parameters above creates a list of files on your D drive that are larger than 100 MB, and posts the total space CONSUMPTION of those files in the end.

The DIR command simply posts a tree of directories, but ALSO posts how much free space is left on your D partition.Well, I have solved the problem. Thanks for all the input!May we know how?I called a Dell tech support person, and they deleted the excess files up until 6/09. That may be so, but your main problem (still unanswered) is, how did those files end up on drive D, what kind of files were those, and what about the future issues?I asked the tech person one of those questions. He said that in a few months, I have merely to repeat the action that he did, to delete the excess files. I realized that I chose D drive, when I set automatic back up of files to start running on a daily basis. I think that I have to choose a way to back these files up on a CD or external hard drive, instead of having the computer programmed to do it every day, into the D drive, as I did. If you answered my questions from yesterday (post #11):
Quote
Do you use any type of automatic backup?
Is system restore set for drive D?
you would have saved yourself, and us a lot of time.Quote from: tekkite07 on July 07, 2009, 11:57:28 PM

Solve : Vista SP2 problems?

Answer»

I have RECENTLY allowed Microsoft to download SP2 onto my system via Microsoft updates but it doesn't seem to have worked, the first message I got after it 'configured' the update was: Some could could not be completed. Reverting changes. Will retry on startup.
So I let it do it again however I WALKED away from the computer and when I got back the windows login screen was on so I thought ok it must be done so I clicked onto control panel and it still says I have SP1 so I went onto the security center clicked onto updates and to my surprise there was 1 update available.............'Microsoft Service Pack 2' .......so I need some help guys. Plus my computer is running much much slower than before with the RAM usage up by more than 200mb than previously. Thanks Gary

What is running in applications?Applications? Just the Opera browserI just upgraded to Vista ultimate myself and there were tons of updates. Vista seems to take alot of ram as well, make SURE there aren't a bunch of programs on startup that could be hogging up ram causing the install to pause etc.Startup seems fine as I use Winpatrol, so I block what isn't needed although of COURSE I allow essential programs to run, personally I feel like doing a clean re-install of my system I don't feel like going through almost an hour of installing SP2 for it not to even work properly.1) Are you running Vista Ultimate? If so, did you install any language packs? If yes, you need to install the All-language version of SP2. The five-language version won't work unless the only languages you're using are English, Spanish, French, GERMAN, and/or Japanese.

2) Was your Vista install customized in any way, shape, or form using vLite? If yes, then you're screwed, since SP2 won't install on a vLited Vista.

3) Did a previous Windows Update fail? Check for this through Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Update -> View Update History. If any updates failed, try downloading those manually from Microsoft's site and installing them first.

4) Also, try disabling any anti-virus or firewall utilities that may be blocking certain files from being updated through the SP2 upgrade process.

I'd start with using system restore to before SP2 install attempt.
Then...

Click Disable all

There's your problem right there.

I PERSONALLY wouldn't run Vista on anything less than 2 GB of memory. Vista's come a long way since its release in 2007, and can actually run okay on 1 GB of RAM, but again, 2 GB should still be the general rule of thumb.

Quote
,le-1640 amdathlon processer, not sure what that all means and if thats what is needed, thanks again for helping :)

My advice is to do the following:

1) Find out what the exact model of your PC is. Just "Acer" is not good enough.

2) Go to http://www.crucial.com and select the make and model of your PC. It'll tell you what the maximum amount of memory your computer can take.

3) Purchase the appropriate RAM. You don't have to buy from Crucial, but it does make things easier when you don't know all the RAM speak like DDR1/2/3, CAS latencies, RAM speeds, and whatnot.

4) Install RAM in PC. Despite the fact that you do have to open up the side of your computer case, it is still one of the easiest things to install inside a computer.

5) ?????

6) Profit! Your Vista is now happy! :)

Solve : Vista RAM problem - Daily?

Answer»

I want you to check the malware/virus section.

I WOULD rather that you are safe than sorry. In a NUTSHELL, Superfetch caches your most frequently used programs into RAM in order to, in theory, open them faster. After all, RAM is faster than mechanical hard drives, RIGHT?

The drawback of Superfetch is that startup tends to be slower--Vista has to take time to reload your Superfetch cache back into RAM.

Typically, I disable Superfetch on any Vista machine running less than 4 GB of RAM (in other words, 32-bit Vista, although I've seen some 64-bit builds run less than 4 GB of RAM).

Disabling Superfetch means that startup should be a bit faster, but opening huge programs may be a little slower (might not be noticeable until you try disabling it on a machine with 24 GB of RAM running AutoCAD or Revit).

In general, if your 6 GB of RAM is being chewed up, it's probably Superfetch.

When you stopped the Superfetch service, did you remember to disable it? Did you reboot afterward?

...and finally, when you open Task Manager, did you click the button that says "Show processes for all users"?

thanxWhen installed this way you need to enter Setup at boot time and choose which HD you want to boot...You should have left both drives connected to make LIFE easier for you.

Normally, you would install XP first on the primary drive (or partition), then install Vista on the secondary drive (or partition). At that point, Vista will do all the work for you to modify BCD to give you a menu to boot from EITHER OS.

Now you have to modify BCD to see your Windows XP partition and boot from it. At this point, BCD is unaware that XP even exists...

One of these might be able to help you out, since BCD is QUITE a bit more complicated than XP's tried-and-true NTLDR/NTDETECT.COM/BOOT.INI combo:

EasyBCD is free, but Vistabootpro is not.

Solve : Vista freezing problem??

Answer»

Hello everyone, I have a problem with vista "freezing" on my computer.

I recently built my own computer, I never did that before so its still fairly new to me (very different from OEM computers). That was two months ago, the last two weeks my computer started experiencing random freezing where everything freezes (stops responding) except the mouse cursor.
It would do that after an hour or two when idle. I generally have the screen turn itself off after 20 minutes, when I move the mouse to use the computer again the screen turns back on but windows stops responding. I can't open any windows or do anything to do with Windows.
I first suspected something was overheating, the last computer that I experienced similar PROBLEMS was an old Powerspec PC with a Pentium 2 processor, When the CPU or graphics card got too hot in that computer it would freeze up/lock up. The IOH chip on my motherboard runs quite hot, about 60C on average, at first I thought something was wrong but from other buyer reviews and even the manufacturer says its normal. The motherboard came with a power saving program that displays the CPU temp, IOH and ICH temps. I installed Rivatuner v2.24 to see the GPU temp. The CPU temp never gets above 40C even at full load, the graphics card never gets above 45C even at full load. SO I think its probably not overheating. I don't know what else to check to find the solution to the freezing problem.

my computer specs:
Intel i7 920 CPU 2.67GHz quad core with HT
MSI X58 Platinum Motherboard
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit
EVGA GTS250 Superclocked edition
G.Skill 3x2GB DDR3 10666
Corsair TX850 watt PSU
Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB SATAII HDD
Antec 900 gaming case

please HELP me?Where is your copy of Vista from?

The IOH chip on my motherboard runs quite hot, about 60C on average, at first I thought something was wrong but from other buyer reviews and even the manufacturer says its normal.

That is VERY hot. 45 degrees is about the norm.

I agree with Mulreay, that is very hot, if that temp is taken at idle and not during an intensive process.I got the OS from microcenter. they sold slightly discounted Vista OS for "system builders".

The IOH temp varies from 48C to 65C. the MSI manufacturer claim the maximum allowable temp is 100C.

I would like to replace the IOH heatsink but its connected by heat pipes to another heatsink, that smaller heatsink is directly under where the graphics card goes. If I replace the IOH heatsink I'll have to remove the other heatsink too. but I can't fit a smaller heatsink there so replacing the factory IOH heatsink isn't an option. Did MicroCenter give you a DVD with Vista ? ?MSI X58 motherboards are NOTORIOUS for hot IOH temps.

The rest of your PC could be a ****ing igloo, and your IOH can be running at 60C or higher!!!

Unfortunately, it's a design flaw on MSI's part.

You have a few options for addressing the ISSUE in order from LEAST to most amount of work involved:

1) Put a small fan on the IOH heat sink. It might not help all that much, but it's minimal work to do so.

2) Remove the spring-loaded bolts off of the IOH heat sink and use something better to tighten it down so the heat sink has better contact.

3) Remove the IOH heat sink, clean off the thermal crap MSI used and use something better like some flavor of Arctic Silver instead.

4) Remove the IOH heat sink and use a third-party cooling solution like the Thermalright HR-05 IFX. Don't use the HR-05 SLI/IFX for the IOH--the fins will get in the way of your CPU's heat sink, the video card, or whatever you may have in the first PCI-e x1 slot.

For your Southbridge, you could either mount the existing heat pipe solution upside down and turn the unmounted IOH heat sink 90 degrees out of the way or you can use a Thermalright HR-05 IFX or SLI/IFX (probably the SLI/IFX because the video card will most likely get in the way of the regular IFX.

Thermalright HR-05 IFX:

Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX:
http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/chipset/hr05_sli_ifx/product_chitset_cooler_hr05_sli_ifx.htm

In any case, I normally like MSI products, but they screwed up with the X58 Pro BOARDS. I'm already RMAing mine now...

Solve : Problems with User Profile logon and Blue Screen?

Answer»

In the morning on July 3, I turned on my laptop and TRIED to login as usual. For some reason, before my account was finished loading (the background was still black and there was no taskbar), there was a small box on the screen that said something like "loading personalized settings" or "custom APPEARANCE" (sorry, I can't remember), and my Symantec Endpoint Protection started my scheduled weekly scan. When loaded, my USER Profile looked different than usual (the background was black with no image, I was missing some desktop icons, and it looked a lot like Safe Mode), so I tried restarting my computer to see if it would make a difference. I have been having problems logging into my User Profile ever since. I only have one User Profile (mine), and I am the system administrator.

After restarting my laptop, I tried to login again. However, I got this message, "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded." and was sent back to the screen in the beginning. I tried several times with no change. After an improper shutdown (I pushed the POWER button), I found that Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking work fine. I was even able to backup my important files to an external harddrive.

I decided to try a System Restore. The choices listed with "Windows Update" were "7/3/2009 1:57:37 AM" and "6/29/2009 11:42:03 PM". I do not remember seeing a Windows Update when I shutdown the night before (usually it loads 2 of 3 parts, then restarts my COMP, loads the 3rd part, and lets me use the comp normally), so I chose the "6/29/2009" Restore Point.

The next time I tried to logon in Normal Mode, I was able to login, though the screen went completely white and blank for a few seconds before my profile started loading. When my profile was loaded, everything looked good (my background wallpaper was back, even AIM loaded). But in only a couple of minutes, I got a blue screen! My computer did an automatic shutdown and restarted. This has been happening ever since.

Whenever I log in (in any mode), I get the following message: "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem. Problem Signature: Problem Event Name:BlueScreen, Locale ID:1003".

I also get some Symantec notices. Usually they say "Symantec Endpoint Protection has determined that the virus definitions are missing on this computer. This computer will remain unprotected from viruses until virus definitions are downloaded to this computer." and once it said something about an error with "Symantec CMC SmcGui". When I open the Symantec program to check, it says that the "Symantec Management Client Service" is not running or failed to start (Error Code returned:0x8007043c).

After a couple of minutes, I get the blue screen again. It always says "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".

I've been thinking that the majority of the problem might rest with my Symantec program, not my computer or Microsoft. But I can't uninstall Symantec while in Safe Mode because Windows Installer doesn't want to work in Safe Mode. I can't uninstall Symantec, and I can't figure out how to fix my laptop, either.

So in conclusion, I can logon in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking with no problems. Everything seems to work fine, even the internet (though my clock's time is messed up). But Normal Mode (where I keep my background wallpaper and everything isn't stretched out) keeps getting the blue screen. It restarts my computer before I can uninstall Symantec.

I need help! I would appreciate any suggestions. ThanksObviously BSOD's are a pain. Have you or better still can you perform a full virus scan?I just finished running Kasperky's virus scan and it found over ten threats in my Symantec files. However, I can't figure out how to uninstall Symantec in Normal Mode (because it only opens for a few seconds before I get the BSOD).

Does anyone know how to unistall program files without using Normal Mode? Is it possible to just delete everything?Norton Removal Tool

Solve : My fan Is ready for take off?

Answer»

I have only three fans: one on the back panel, CPU fan, video card fan.
Yeah, until you fix it, open the case, get a house fan, and point it toward the case. It should help a bit.I was just thinking. I have my tower on the desk. Just so I don't kick it on the floor.

So my screen is vary close to it. Do you think the heat from my 22" screen and play a part too?Nah. It' even better, if it's elevated. I assume, you have some open space around it.Just wanted to mention that I service HP Desktops for my employer and we had a rash of them with thermal compound failures causing them you SOULD like an airplane ready for lift off. Ours are socket 478 Pentium 4 systems. The thermal compound BECOMES chalky and fails to transfer the heat to the 1lb block of copper heatsink. After removing the heatsink and taking q-tips to carefully wipe off the failed compound and have 2 clean surfaces the CPU top and the heatsink surface, I added Artic Silver Thermaltake to the CPU and fastened down the heatsink and had a 60 ->65 degree C drop to 35-> 40 degree C.

The Pentium 4's naturally run hot anyways, and the problem we had prior to fixing this was that they were too loud for the offices sounding like jet engines, and they were thermalclocking down to protect themselves from CPU meltdown, which was causing the systems to BECOME NOISEY and SLOWER.

Check your thermal compound to make sure it is not dried up, and have arctic silver or another higher end thermal compound to apply NEW to the surface after cleaning the old away with q-tips carefully.

***Also FYI: We also had a rash of these also have power capacitors near the heatsink that were swolen and leaking electrolyte out of their tops in which 5 of 20 systems had to become decommissioned due to risk of smoke show or fire. I contacted HP and India Support were oblivious to this issue. Thanks Dave for heads up Nicely done Dave...
Thanx for the good info.Useful bit of info there Dave. Cheers

Solve : IE error message continously appears??

Answer»

I continously get the following error message while using IE-7: "Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX CONTROLS and plug-ins to run? Y or N"

Is there a way to eliminate this message from continously poping up?Yes, click Tools, Internet Options.

Then click Advanced, then scroll down and check the two boxes next to "Allow ACTIVE CONTENT to run...."

Then click OK and off you go!Why? Some ActiveX are needed to see the web page correctly.Going to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced as suggested did not work?? Any other ideas? That's the only thing I can THINK of.

Is there no "Don't ask me again" box you can tick?

Solve : Another Windows 7 pre order question.?

Answer»

I am a little confused about which VERSION of Windows 7 professional to buy as far as 32 bit and 64 bit. I would like the 64 bit but Is It compatible with my computer? and how can I tell?, I know I am running 32 bit right now, But the Million dollor question Is can I run 64 bit on It.

I would like the Windows 7, 64 bit so I can load my Computer up with maximum ram. I am running a duel core processor so It should be compatible with 64 bit, One other question Is When I go to the website to pre-order Windows 7 I do not see an OPTION to buy 64 bit, So what are you getting when you want to order a version, 32 bit or 64?. I am assuming the standard Buy Is 32 bit.1. Quick way to check your processor to see if it's 64 bit (should be, but won't hurt to check anyway)...

download SecurAble program from this link ... http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/SecurAble-Download-73409.html

Run it, and if you see it says "64 Maximum Bit Length", then you are able to run 64 bit windows.

2. I'd like to know what website you are planning to preorder windows 7 from. Anyway... ACCORDING to the FAQ via this link ... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-order-faq.aspx, Microsoft says that "You’ll get both. Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional packaged products include both 32- and 64-bit discs. " So ou'll get the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of windows in one package and you can just install whatever edition that you want (and are able to) As I said In my post, I KNOW THAT I AM RUNNING 32 BIT. But thanks for the Info about microsoft sending both 32 and 64 bit disc's. That was much needed info, And very good news. I will order as soon as possible. I think the rule of thumb Is As long as You have duel or quad core processors your OK , But the catch Is you have to ENABLE the processor and mother-boared In bios . http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-7-Professional-Upgrade/product/8BB1A4B4.No, the rule is, you can ONLY run a 64-bit OS on a 64-BIT processor. wether your currently running 32-bit is irrelevant. Although personally I just use CPU-Z for that.

Also re: the versioning I think you get both 64-bit and 32-bit when you buy an edition. So, You are saying that my intel core duo 8400 processor Is not 64 bit? therefore I cannot run 64 bit OS? IF I am not mistaken this link says it does..http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33910 But I am not sure, just asking.Your CPU is 64 bit, so you can run a 64 bit OS.Thank you calum, I thought I was right. Thats great news !QUOTE from: srtony1946 on July 06, 2009, 12:17:23 AM
