Answer»

Broni -
When I answered your remarks on my recent problem (How does Avast scan work) I wanted to use "spell check". When I clicked on "spell check" a page came up labeled "Blank page". Spell check never came up. What was I doing wrong?
Thanks BobJust try a reload. Try doing it with out installing. Just reload.

What Spell check do you use?Teeman -
I am using the "spell check" at the bottom of the "post reply" The line reads "post" "preview" "spell check" When I click on it to have my spelling checked I get "Blank page" BobI never use it, but let me see...
OK. I just did it, and when I click on "Spell check", pop-up window comes up:

The pop-up window that you got comes up sometimes but at other times a page comes up that is labeled "Blank Page - Windows Internet Explorer" and on the next line it says "about blank". What I would like is to get rid of the blank page and use "spell check" to get rid of misspelled words. Thanks Bob

Solve : .php websites won't load?

Answer»

I have not been able to OPEN many forums and websites that have .php at the end of the link/address. I tried both FireFox and IE on Vista Home x64. I don't think it is an issue with the sites I'm visiting because it is happening to many sites I've tried to load. The weird thing is that sometimes the pages will not load, and the next day it will, then i won't again. I have done several virus and spyware scans and CAME up with no threats. Any suggestions WOULD be much appreciated.Have you tried with the 32 bit IE, the 64 bit IE does have problems with some sites as it is more geared towards security.I voted...So did I, but I have no idea for what.

For all I know Quebec just seperated.I have tried 32 bit IE and it doesn't work. Also, I noticed that it is not just php sites. I went to a few popular websites and some didn't load. I would also like to add that I don't have a firewall installed or EVEN windows fire wall turned on.Do you have your Vista DVD ? ?Yes I do have my Vista DVD*PUTS hand up*

I join the ranks of yet another Vista problem. Just noticed that today actually using Safari. Obviously Vista doesn't like Perl script.

Solve : pre ordered windows 7?

Answer»

I am thinking about pre- ordering Windows 7, But I am not sure which one I want. I want the one that is most compatible with a gaming computer. I found this site http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-Windows-7/category/102 can anyone give me advice on which one to BUY?Quote from: Microsoft

Windows 7 Professional includes all the Home Premium features you love and the business features your work demands... you can run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode and recover your data easily with automatic back-ups to your home or business network.
I'd only get Professional or Ultimate. They are the 2 that have XP mode. XP mode will make 99% of your XP programs and games work on Win7.

Quote from: Microsoft
.....plus added security features and the flexibility to work in multiple languages. Create a home network and share all of your favorite photos, videos and music. You can even watch TV programs for free, whenever and wherever you want.
Unless you need the "7 Ultimate features" above, i'd get Professional. Just avoid Home Premium."XP mode" means nothing.

The only reason "XP mode" is even necessary is because the games that require it are programmed by retarded monkeys who can't read the bloody API documentation. They use undocumented functions and/or side-effects or depend on undocumented behaviour and then turn into wussy girls when MS changes the undocumented behaviour It's undocumented for a reason, and it's subject to change.

These companies should get their programmers to LEARN to program, not device clever hacks that end up breaking with the next windows OS. But they don't, because they don't need too.

Everybody just blames MS. It's the OS that is buggy, NOT the GAME, despite it being written by a illiterate *censored* who thinks that he's a genius for devising a Absolute value function that takes the root of the square of the value.

Maybe so....
But I still sure as heck wouldn't get Windows 7 without "XP mode"but it would be a saver for users to have the XP mode, when they have games they know works on XP and won't work on windows 7 because win 7 is too new for the game to run....Before you get all excited about XP mode, you should know you need a processor with HARDWARE virtulization for XP mode to work. While AMD have included hardware virtulization on virtually all its processors for a couple of years now, Intel seems no include the feature seemingly at random on its processor lineup.

Solve : How does Avast scan work??

Answer»

I am running Vista Home Basic on an E Machine 32 bit. I have Avast Antivirus (the free edition). I want to run a full scan every month or so. When I was using Norton there was a place to click on that would run a full scan (TOOK about an hour). I can't figure out how to get Avast to do the same thing. Can you give me detailed INSTRUCTIONS about solving my problem. Thanks BobScheduling feature is only present on paid VERSION, but you may try this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2%3Baction=display%3Bthreadid=3796You can also do TASK Scheduler with the home version.Broni & Quantos -
I was not plain enough with my question. I do not want to put the Avest antivirus 4.8 Home on a schedule. I want it to do a full scan of my computer. When I right click on Avast icon I get a panel with a number of items on it, one of which is "open" When I click on "open" I get a panel that says: "test of memory and startup". It seems to run that and disappears. What I want is for Avast antivirus to run a full scan but I have been unable to find the command to get this done. Help Thanks Bob Right click on Avast icon, click "START avast!antivirus".
It'll run memory scan.
When the scan is done, this window will pop-up:

Click where indicated.Broni -
Thanks for your reply, however I can not get the panel yiou showed to come up. When I right click on the Avast icon there is not a "start avast antivirus" to click on. On mstter what I try the panel "test of memory and startup" appears. That runs and says "Program will now continue" but nothing else happens. Any other suggestions? Bob You don't have this option?

[attachment deleted by admin]Broni -
I did not find the panel you showed BUT I did find the infro I wanted. I went to all programs and avast Antivirus and Web page and details and user guide. This gave me all the infro about how to use avast Antivirus. I should have found it sooner but I just missed it. Thanks for all your time.. BobYou're welcome

I have seen a gradual slowdown in my computer ALONG with not being able to pull up news photos, videos and such on my computer. I purchased a program from some OUTFIT called Control Center and tried to CONNECT with them, but my computers security program won't allow them to hook in to my computer. I have a fairly new compac presario with Vista. I've tried as best as a beginner can to disable the security on the computer, but now all I get is "it's unsafe for you to browse the web with your current settings and still I cannot connect to this Control Center program as my computer is still blocking. Any idea what I can do to resolve this problem?Quote

Solve : Run As Administrator?

Answer»

I am trying to run an APPLICATION from a USB stick that performs hardware diagnostics on the computer on which it is connected. I need admin rights to complete the network diagnostic testing. A batch file is launched, through autorun, that launches a number of applications - the diagnostic tool, a text document with instructions and a help file.

I can right click the diagnostic tool application (from on the USB stick - this is not saved to the computer) and choose properties then Compatibility and TICK the 'Run as administrator' BOX, but this only remembers those settings on that computer. I need to run this on multiple machines.

If I transfer that USB stick to another computer, I have to again choose to run it as administrator.

Is there a way to keep these settings so that it will run as admin from initial launch? No.

Solve : [No Sound] Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi, as it says in the topic name, I have no sound, and I can't find the solution.

I am using Intel(R) 915 Express motherboard, and the integrated sound card, which doesn't work cause of problems with drivers. I have searched for the right drivers and tried to install them, but haven't made it yet. Windows 7 can't seem to find the right thing either, so now I am TURNING for help from you.Have you tried DLoading and installing the Vista drivers ? ?Yes, cause there is no windows 7 drivers I downloaded the Vista drivers instead, but it isn't sure I got the right ones. What OS were you running before?

Are you sure that your hardware supports Windows 7?I used Linux Fedora 11 before (changed DUE to faults with the graphics card and a higher DEMAND from other family members) so there was no windows upgrade but a total format of the disc with new PARTITIONS. The computor came with Windows XP.

It could be compability problems, and if I can't find a solution, I may put in ANOTHER soundcard. After a quick look at the mother board specs, I don't beleive that it's supported by Windows 7.

Intel certainly doesn't claim that it is.Okey. Well everything else works, and it is just the sound that is missing, and I got an Audigy soundblaster from Creative in a broken computor here, so I'll try to install that one instead and see if it works together with 7.That might do it, sometimes the integrated audio can be a PITA. Let us know.Okey, wont have the time to do it in some days though so it might take it's time. Thanks for the help

This morning, my computer froze up, and this is awkward because its never happened before. So i restarted, and when i GOT to my login screen and it said that my LoginUI was corrupted/missing and that i should run chkdsk utility.

I logged in after getting a bunch of similar errors on different things, and ran my chkdsk /f but when i rebooted again, it wouldnt scan. Now everytime i try to launch something, i get a popup in the corner saying its corrupted.

This is not good because i needed it for work tonight. What is wrong with it?

Solve : Video card recognized as PCI to PCI bridge?

Answer»

I got a new video card geforce 8400 and put it in and it worked and pulled up windows. Then I put my geforce 8800 gts back in and both video cards started up and then when it got to windows it all went BLACK. I was forced to restart it and when it came back up the 8400 installed as a PCI to PCI bridge and I can't use it.

My motherboard is BIOSTAR NF520-A2 AM2 and I am running Windows 7 64 bit.I solved my own problem. I put the 8400 back in by itself and loaded back into windows. Made sure it installed the latest geforce 8 series DRIVERS from Nvidias website. Then I shut it back down and put both cards back in and windows defaulted the 8800 as the primary and the 8400 as SECONDARY.

Solve : Sleep Issue?

Answer»

Trying to FIGURE out what the issue is here, this problem was present both in my current Windows 7 installation and my former Windows Vista installation.

Sleep has never WORKED correctly for me with this build. Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe, AMD 4200 X2,8800GTS. The computer will go to sleep perfectly fine, but it will not wake up. Pressing the power button makes the hard drives spin up, and the fans spin on. The monitor never turns on though, and the computer never POSTS (beeps). So its LIKE it kicks the aux power on to some devices, but never resumes the system.

I've tried turning on and off hybrid sleep mode, S1 mode, S3 mode, no luck with any of them. No matter what it won't resume. I've replaced the power supply and this problem still exists before and after this change. I'm at a bit of a loss here. If it's desktop, forget Windows power saving features. Maybe by next century, M$ will be able to fix them (I doubt).I agree with Broni here. Sleep mode + desktop = problems. Especially if you don't have a UPS backup to provide continuous power in the event of a power failure. Too many times have I seen a desktop not want to come out of sleep mode after a power failure. Never had an issue with laptops though, provided the battery is always in.I also encounter same problem with my dell NOTEBOOK that sometimes I have to force it to power off by removing its power supply and battery.
everything SEEMS to wake up but the monitor is still dead. I also done some tweaking on my power saving setting but still no joy!.
so no sleeping mode for me now!

Solve : windows vistas readyboost?

Answer»

I have got a little confused here.
quite a few people have told me thats its ok to disable readyboost in services.msc if you don't use it.
I do not use it , not yet anyway.

So do i really need the service running, i have looked on the blackviper site, and the safe setting is automatic.

But on various websites it tells you that you can safely disable it.

Quote

10 Unnecessary Services that Can Be Safely Disabled
1. ReadyBoost
ReadyBoost is a great idea from MICROSOFT. Unfortunately most of us don’t use it, don’t know how to use it, or don’t even know what it does.

ReadyBoost is a new feature in Vista that ALLOWS users to use a USB flash drive, SD card, or any other type of portable memory as disk cache. It is also used in conjunction with Superfetch (the beefed up version of Prefetch from XP) which stores cache of boot up programs to help speed boot times.

If you are like me and don’t use ReadyBoost you can safely disable this service and free up any memory it is using. So locate ReadyBoost in your Services list and double click on it:

So really is it safe to disable this if you dont use itYou won't even notice a performance gain, so why disable it?but you can, quite safely. just remember you disabled it if you ever want to use readyboost.

Thanks, i did not know about a performance gain, i just thought you where supposed to disable any services you where not using.
That was basically my question.
But as you pointed out, leaving it running will not make hardly any difference.
So my question has been answered, so i have the choice now at least

yea, thats what i was thinking, its not necessary if you don't use it, so you might as well turn it off
Here is a quote from the website

ReadyBoost
Default Description:
PROVIDES support for improving system performance using ReadyBoost.

Additional Information:
ReadyBoost uses the Superfetch service and an USB flash drive or memory card as memory cache and performs boot optimization. If you do not use an USB flash drive in this manner, you can disable ReadyBoost, but a negitive impact on performance could result, depending upon the amount of memory installed as outline in this forum post. I recommend to leave the Superfetch service on Automatic.

I am not that advanced in this area, but this lead me to post the question
I have 2.0 ram, so really i am still unsure weather to disable it.

So i will probably just leave it alone for nowDoes 2.0 RAM mean that you have 2 GB of ram on your system?

I think that readyboost would be best for people whose systems are having 512 ~ 1gb of ram, which is the minimum you need to run vista but is not enough for decent vista performance. So might as well turn it off, if indeed you meant you have 2gb of ram in your system which should be plenty and I do have readyboost turned off anyway.

Also, it seems less services enabled would mean less memory that the computer will allocate to the running those services ReadyBoost is generally worthless and can safely be dis-abled as a running process....Quote from: 2x3i5x on June 30, 2009, 06:00:07 PM

Solve : Dual Boot/Hard Drive Partitioning?

Answer»

I want to dual boot with Windows 7 and XP. I hear I need to PARTITION my hard drive. This is new to me so I'm not quite SURE whats going on. When I do this does it MEAN I also have to reformat my drive or lose information? Also any links or suggested methods of partitioning? Thank you.Okay well I guess I got the BASIC idea and materials... this is how I have it setup:
-GParted is extracted to a USB flash drive waiting to be booted into...
-Windows 7 installation will be extracted on my external USB Hard drive

All I'm wondering is once it's partitioned and I run the setup, how will it know where to install? How do I know it's not installing over XP? And also I'm still wondering a little if partitioning FORMATS the drive?

Thanx.Some good info here....

Solve : forwarding in outlook to yahoo account?

I am on three different outlook systems. I wish to forward any emails to my normal yahoo ACCOUNT. I set up a forwarding rule, but nothing gets forwarded. I can GO and forward an individual email, but I wish all of them to be forwarded. HELP!!Ever considered changing your email address to your yahoo address? It's easier to tell people your NEW address than have them all re-directed.If you must keep all of the accounts, some mail servers allow mail forwarding to another address. You didn't say anything about what accounts you're using with Outlook, so impossible to say more.

Mail forwarding is an OPTIONAL service from server side, not all mail SERVICES allow it.Quote from: nweiler on June 27, 2009, 03:29:59 PM

How did you do that? I don't see an option to select forwarding as an action in a Rule in Outlook 2007. But, I can do it with Windows Mail (Windows Vista) or Outlook Express (Windows XP).

Solve : Screen Going Blank?

Answer»

I guess that new lamp I have for my £800 LCD Sony bravia 40" t.v should not be put in with a butter knife and some packing tape then??Most LCD monitors have an AC inverter to power the backlight in the back of the monitor, this is where the risk is since it usually has to be removed to get the screen out and replace a backlight.

Some, but not many, LCD monitors have the AC inverter in the form of an EXTERNAL adapter. While these are safer to open up and work on since it could be easily unplugged, they are few and far between. As far as I know, the cost of replacing the backlight is the same, whether the AC inverter is inside or outside of the monitor itself.

Solve : NetWork Controller Issue?

Answer»

Not exactly sure where to post this, so I guess I will try to start here. Not a computer wiz either.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CS230J notebook and it went down on the 24th of June and is currently still down. Even went to Sony reps for help and none of them really helped me solve anything.

On the day I had lost my internet connection, my notebook kept notifying me every time that I came on that I needed to update my driver software. I tried doing that and nothing worked, even with Sony reps telling me what to do. I even resorted to re-booting the whole thing out of frustration and still nothing.

...Kept telling me my network adapter could not be found, but I believe the PROBLEM lies with my network controller.

If I am not explaining myself clearly enough, someone please do specify for me. Any suggestions are welcomed, because I really want my internet access back.Do you use a cable to connect to the Internet or do you use wireless, with your notebook?

Click on START (the pearl in the bottom left corner of your desktop), TYPE "device manager", when it appears in the menu, click on it.

When device manger opens, observe what does it looks like under "network adapters". Do you see any red X's or yellow exclamation marks?

Make sure your wireless adapter is switched on or your ATTACHED by cable.

Look at the network icon in the notification area
The one on the bottom right of the screen. Its a monitor screen with a big red x on it.

So 'right' click on it

Click on 'diagnose and repair'. Vista should then search for issues and give you some solutions.

Solve : Windows not detected??

Answer»

A few days ago, my laptop suddenly restarted while I was in the middle of writing a paper for school. Since this is a relatively frequent OCCURENCE (once or twice a month), I thought I would just let windows restart, restore the file, and get on with it. However, after the startup image, a screen came up that looked typical but did not really respond. At the top, it said "Windows not detected." There were two options - one to boot up normally, and one to run startup repair. Selecting startup repair did absolutely nothing, just made the screen flash. Selecting start windows normally made the computer restart and took me back to the same screen a few seconds later.

I went into the BIOS to give my CD the priority so I could try to restore it using the recovery CD that came with my computer, and noticed that only 2 of my 3 hard drives were detected in it. At this point I'm thinking that my primary hard drive is fried, and start flipping. Long story short, the recovery CD crashes, and at this point I'm at the end of my rope.

As a desperate measure, I burn an Ubuntu CD from my other computer and start up using that. Lo and BEHOLD, it works! What's more, I can even access my primary hard drive, with all the files intact! Unfortunately, I know nothing about setting up a partition, so I can't really make linux a permanent thing, though I have no QUALMS about doing so (All my attempts to set up a linux partition ended with a few 2.5GB blocks that I have no idea how to use as the OS; besides that, it usually crashed during my attempts to install).

What can I do to get Windows working again? I am still under warranty, but want to avoid losing my DATA. And here's the stickler about that: Every time I try to transfer all of my important files to my external, if I try to do more than 1GB at a time, the ubuntu OS crashes. Major inconvenience, but I suppose I could get around it by going file-by-file... *sigh*

Any tips?Quote

Back up whatever you can, and send the computer for repairs. That's your best option.Quote

I'm going to agree with Broni. You paid for that service when you bought the computer, you might as well use it

Heh, that's what I was afraid of... Pretty much what I expected, but I was HOPING there was some magic computer voodoo that would turn up.

Thanks to both of you for your input. That's not the point.
The point is, if the computer malfunctions during warranty period, it's better to check it out, while it's free, than wait for a disaster, when the warranty is out.

Solve : Clean Install of Vista Home Premium without Reinstallation Disk?

Answer»

I have an HP Vista Home Premium machine. When I bought the machine, of course, I did not receive reinstallation disks - but I burned factory restore DVDs which include the operating system as well as necessary drivers and all the applications which came with the PC. I would like to do a clean install of Vista (legally), and omit all the other original software. If I can locate and purchase a full (not an OEM) version of Vista Home Premium (used), without the COA (or product key); slipstream this disk with SP1 & SP2; do a clean install of the slipstreamed disk and use my original Vista product key during the installation, would this process do the trick for me? I have software which I can use to extract and reinstall all the drivers currently in use on my machine, so that should not be a problem. .

Any comments or suggestions would be very welcome.Your original Vista product key is PROBABLY an OEM key and ALMOST certainly would not work on a retail version of Vista. I don't THINK you can legally purchase a COPY of Vista without the COA, so you would just use the COA from the copy you bought.

Bear in mind that slipstreaming has some grey areas legally, too.Rob Pomeroy:

Thanks for your post. In the past, I have successfully used the above-described process to reinstall the XP operating system, when a reinstall was determined to be necessary - but when the PC owner had lost or MISPLACED reinstallation disks. In these instances, I had no problems using a full O/S (non-OEM) disk to reinstall from, but using the original OEM product key for the installation. Again, the only purpose for this process is get around the fact that I have no O/S reinstallation disk - which gives me no alternative but to do a factory restore operation in lieu of a clean install of Vista.

It was probably not clear from my original post - but my plan was not to purchase another license for Vista Home Premium - rather to try to locate and buy a used Vista disk (with or without the COA) to use only for reinstallation purposes and, as stated above, using my original product key for the reinstall.

Thanks again for your post.

Solve : Blue Screen & Random Restart?

Answer»

Ok, so my laptop boots up fine, and then a blue screen appears with a thick BLACK line at the bottom and then restarts. I never receive an error message, but when it restarts it says that Windows has experienced an improper shutdown and it will ask if I want to start Windows noramlly, so I do. It'll boot up again and then a few minutes later it'll do the same thing. Sometimes I'm able to reboot it just fine, after a few tries, but then I can be an hour into what I'm doing and it gives me the blue screen again and restarts. I never ever see any type of error message or any wording, even on the blue screen.

I tried booting it in safe mode and it works fine, no PROBLEM at all. I ran my virus SOFTWARE and it hasn't found anything.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on, is it possible it's a HARDWARE issue and not a software issue? To get the machine to BSOD next time it boots properly go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery....uncheck the box that says auto re-start on errors.

Re-boot for the changes to take effect.
Now instead of restarting you will get BSOD's ( blue screens of death ) and they will have CRYPTIC error messages...
Copy it down completely including the gibberish and post the info here...

Welcome Aboard !That box is already unchecked Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
Vista users You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.

Solve : help, bsod vista?

Answer» HI, Im new, so hello all. I must say it's a classy forum and I can tell its run by pro's.

My problem is an error 0x0000007b, and I think it's due to avast. I ran a scan and it told me that c:\pagefile.sys was a trojan (bifrose or something like that), then it told me to move and rename the file, and I did. Maybe that's the problem.

Also it gave me the option to run a bootup scan (at next boot) and I agreed. Now my laptop gets only past the drivers loading and displaying the os information (I have it in verbose boot MODE, where it shows what happens at boot with more detail), at that point it crashes.

Another thing is when I go in with a vista bootcd (repair startup, I choose cmd prompt) to try and run bootrec /fixboot, I do rebuildbcd and it says no windows installation is detected. The wierd thing is, to get to that I have to choose between win 7 and vista in the bootcd INTERFACE (after it lets you choose language, it scans and lets you choose between os's, and I see vista and 7 as options). So the bootcd can see it to start and then I run rebuildbcd and now its not there. poop.

anyway, please helpFrom MSDN:

Quote
0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage ADAPTER hardware, or a virus.

Have you installed any new drivers/hardware recently ? ?
Is Win7 installed on this machine ? ?
How old is the HDD itself ? ?

This may take a visit to our Virus and Spyware section to get you sorted but let's start here first...ok, no I haven't isntalled new stuff (anything I install was working fine for a while before this happened last thursday), the hdd works, since I use it with ubuntu, and yes I have 7 on it, it's never been an issue to my other partitions. (the hdd is about 2yrs old). I think I should first disable avast (last time I could boot to vista and I ran a scan I was offered to SCHEDULE a boot time scan -I said yes, that's after it moved and renamed a c:\pagefile.sys because it said it was a trojan in the scan). How can I uninstall avast if the partition won't boot (I can still use my files with ubuntu)? Can you boot into Safe Mode?try running boot menu and run the setup program and try useing a vista boot cd But first run boot menu run in safe mode and uninstal any new hardware or software and it might work.I have tried safe mode and as you might imagine, I'm still unable to get past the bluescreen at the end of loading drivers. usually I do just that if I get a blue screen, I try to go safe mode > uninstall anything suspect. its not an option from what I've seen (tried it a few times already)....

Going for the vista boot cd (thnks to neuber), it cannot repair it on its own. I checked if winload.exe was in \system 32, and \boot, and it is (it hasn't been modified in months from the dates shown).
I think I really need to get avast uninstalled first, but how would I do this, if its not booting. Is there a way through live cd or better yet, ubuntu? Im stil trying to avoid reinstalling vista so is there any other ideas to troubleshoot this bsod?Do you have Vista DVD?yup, I tried bootrec /fixmbr ( and other commands), also chkdsk /f, so is there anything else to try? even if it requires another boot cd.If you have Vista DVD, try Vista repair install: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Solve : Still cannot open Windows Mail Links?

Answer»

Hello. I have a 3 month old Dell Studio Q8200 Desktop 2.33 GHZ. 4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHZ with "Vista Home Premium"(Not sure what premium is).
I have Internet Explorer 7 with all the updates. I had tried Internet 8 but it was RUNNING slow. I went back to 7.
I read the POSTING about setting the Defaults and did them, but I still can't get a Link to open in "Windows Mail".
I first went to "Set Your Default Programs". There I clicked on Internet Explorer and Windows Mail and then clicked on ""Set this program as default".
Next I went to "Associate a file TYPE or protocol with a program". In "Extensions", I did not click on anything nor on "Protocols".
I went to "Set programs access and computer defaults". I first tried clicking on Internet Explorer as the Default. "Windows Mail still would not open a Link.
I then went to "CUSTOM" and clicked on that. It still would not open the Link.
However, as soon as I opened "Internet Explorer"and minimized it, I was able to go to "Windows Mail" and the Links opened right up. It will only do it if I have Explorer open. (I did not know this is what it would do. I just happened to have Explorer minimized when I was checking my E Mail).
Any help would be appreciated.

Solve : Windows Vista Start Up Issues?????

Answer»

Hi,
My friend has a DELL Inspiron 1520 Laptop and having some major issues with it. The other day her son and my nephew were playing on it and being kids were fighting over it. So all she did was close the laptops cover. When coming to turn the laptop back on later it would look as if it would load up but doesn't get past the loading screen. First time round it was trying to repair something but she left this running for hours and it didn't successfully finish. I had a look, tried to run diagnostics but things passed. When trying to get into safe mode it LOADS up the drivers but hangs on BTHidmgr.sys then blue screen appears and restarts. I have tried to do a full system restore, but the CD only loads up so far then doesn't do anything, I waited for hours for it to tick over even from selecting the keyboard FORMAT I wanted, it just didn't get any further with the installation. I have tried allsorts but nothing seems to get far enough to be able to follow through with.

I hope this had made sense and someone can help

Many Thanks in ADVANCE Do you have the Vista installer disk?Quote from: jerryheavyarms on June 22, 2009, 09:01:15 AM

Do you have the Vista installer disk?

Yes I do, THATS what I was trying to run through when it asked me what keyboard format I wanted then didnt move from there for hours so I had to manually turn it off. I have tried everything thats on the disk.

Solve : arp in IPv6?

Answer»

Hello everybody,

We have a experimental prototype of a special net (Optical burst switching) and we have done the migration between IPv4 and IPv6.
with IPv4 we put the ARP manually, eg: arp -s 10.0.0.1 00-0c-98-34-....., but now, with IPv6 we don't know what is the command we have to execute to link the MAC and the IPv6 address,
We are using the cmd of windows vista.
If anybody knows how to deal with it, please LET us know!!!

lots of THANKS for your time
oriolIPv6 obsoletes ARP in favour of NDP (neighbour DISCOVERY protocol). You might find this article illuminating - I certainly did!

Solve : Microsoft Windows Startup?

Answer»

I have a new toshiba laptop with vista 64 with 4G of ram. It works great but lately it is taking sevearl minutes at startup. As a beginner, what can I do to improve the startup speed. Thanks for any advise!uninstall programs you don't use. programs LOVE to hog STARUP priority.
also try clearing icons off of your desktop you don't use. when my mom use to use this computer, it took 15 minutes to start up.

i removed things from startup, took desktop icons off, used ccleaner(http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloading). ran like new(more or less )another thing, you can run a HiJack this log from this link and post a log it makes ... http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.htm

Then have evilfantasy, BRONI or some other specialist review the log and help you out. I believe the most common thing to do when your computer takes a long time to boot up is to disable start-up programs..

Click the pearl (START), type RUN into the search box, when it appears in the menu, click on RUN and type MSCONFIG into the box and click "ok"...Next, click on the "start up" tab and then click on "disable all"...then click "ok" and then restart...

It should boot up faster when you restart, and overall, be faster

Of COURSE, you don't have to disable every program, you could be selective...but don't enable anything you don't intend to use....especially right when you turn on the computer

"sfc /scannow"

This will fix the corrupted windows files.Problem solved!

I had my computer checked out by some guy from work who works on computers and is very knowledgeable about this stuff. It turns out that it was the switch and the wire connected to the switch that is USED to turn on the computer. It was going bad and that is why it kept restarting, etc. He says everything else on the computer is in pretty good shape and now it's working great again!

Solve : Space randomly disappears??

Answer»

Hi.

This really isn't a problem, PER se, but I WOULD really like to know what's going on.
My computer GENERALLY has a file space USED of ~151gb without a restore point, and a space of ~149 with a restore point. So far as I know, restore points are the only things computer generated that can eat up multiple gigabytes of free space.
That is, yesterday, while I was playing Call of Duty 4 for 30 minutes, I checked my disk space and saw that it randomly dropped by 3 gigabytes to ~146.

My computer did not update, my computer did not do anything at all that I know of. But suddenly the file space dropped by 3 gigabytes.

Truth be told, I don't really care that much. I just want to know what happened.

Thanks.Temporary files...
Is page file size set, or managed by Windows?
Quote

~151gb without a restore point, and a space of ~149 with a restore point
What do you mean here? In Vista system restore size is set to the minimum of 30% of free space or 15% of the volume.

Solve : Vista Lag?

Answer»

Hi..I have a newer compaq LAPTOP Presario F700-OS Vista

For the longest time, the desktop manager has been finicky, the screen would freeze and the prompt
Desktop manager has stopped working, then I would have to reboot.

Now, when I go to sign in on windows, after I put in my PASSWORD, the screen lags, and WONT go to my desktop. THen I have to reboot several times.. I have no installed ANYTHING to warrant this as this has gone on for a while. I just attributed it to vista crankiness.

In the device manager, there are several yellow exclamation marks for my
Network adapter -Isatap.....

Microsoft states that everything is running fine with these items, and they should not be affecting performance
and I did try to run updates for the drivers and they are all up to date.

Can anyone help me with ideas on the lag?

Appreciate it.

Thanks a bunch!

Solve : Vista search facility?

Answer»

Seeking HELP please if possible. I am running Vista PREMIUM, SP1 (have not downloaded SP2 on the advice of friends?). Dual Core, 1 Gig RAM.
Question is this.
When I first got the computer, when one clicked on the start button, it brought up a box with VARIOUS options on it, including Control Panel, Help and Support etc. I seem to recall that it also had a search button also, which I recall was lost when some update was done, although that might be a symptom of ADVANCING “oldtimers disease”. :-)) I seem to recall using it to search for files, but it is no longer there.,
I FIND the current search button which opens with "Start" to be useless.
However, when I go through the following routine, Start, Help and Support, windows basics, then type in the search box, “Find a file”, brings up Find a file or folder, click on the “Find a file using the search folder”, scroll down to “Click to open “search”, which then allows you to do an "advanced search", selecting folders, drives etc.
My query is, how does one manage to get a shortcut to get to that “search” tab, without going through that rigmarole? I do find the Start and help and support search facilities pathetic.
Thanks in anticipation.
Is the following picture what you see when you click the start button? I find no problems what so ever finding files using this search.
Plus SP2 may be the way forward. I've got it and have had no noticeable problems.

[attachment deleted by admin]Windows search has been always a horrible tool. On my Vista, it won't half of the files, which are really there.
I recommend some 3rd party application.
I use SuperFinder: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/Super-Finder.shtml
It installs itself under right click menu. Thanks Broni, I will give it a whirl. I stand in awe of the knowledge of you blokes but there are always people like me who find windows search did just fine, so don't give up windows search if it is not giving you grief.

Solve : Ask about Windows Vista Homebasic edition setting?

Answer»

I have an OS Windows Vista Home basic edition I need to setting my notebook for the first time what setting best suited for firefox setting and other please any help will be very appreciated

My PC:
OS : Windows vista home basic edition
RAM:225GB
Processor: Intel Centrino
thanks for any help 1. check out firetune software for a quick safe firefox optimization --> http://www.totalidea.com/product.php?Product=FireTune
adblock plus and ie tab are good extensions to have on your firefox (you can find them on the official firefox addon page)

2. I would use commodo FIREWALL as my firewall (it's free and always will be) over the windows firewall, you should disable windows firewall first to prevent any potential firewall conflicts.

3. grab AVG, avast or avira antivirus program (they're all free and only one is needed. don't get more than one but get the one you like best)

4. Have Ccleaner, Malwarebytes antimalware and superantispyware and perhaps advanced systemcare on hand.

That's all I have on mind ... I'm sure you're already familiar with a lot of this stuff I mention and oh yeah, use the windows diskcleaner to CLEAN out old restore points as they take up space.

yes thank you for your advice and recomendations i want to ask baout how i manage my firefox internet setting such as : parental control, windows DEFENDER setting and other application for the safety networkingBefore we get STARTED, please list the settings that you want to know the most about, as they're probably the most important and what is your concern? Solve : The Specified Module Could Not Be Found?

At startup on my new Gateway 6810-01 with Vista Service Pack 1, it gives me the MESSAGE:

"Error Loading \3\DLBTtime.dll

The specified module could not be found. "

It has happened twice at startup. I have had the computer for two weeks. I don't know if it is malware or a Vista thing-so we could move the thread if appropriate.

Thanks!i dont much about this ONE but i have found some sites that might help you out a little.
http://www.what-is-exe.com/filenames/dlbttime-dll.html

if you still are a little unsure wait for someone else to come along but hopefully this helps YA a little.
good luck I show it as part of Dell's printer package...odd because you stated you have a Gateway.I have a Dell All-in-One. It could be that the DRIVER is missing, or maybe the printer is not on while the computer turns on. I will restart the computer with it unplugged and see what happens. That's what i would try...
Another option if that does not produce JOY joy would be to remove the printer in Device Manager...use Add/Remove to uninstall the printer software and start from scratch...

NOTE:
If it's a USB printer most times you want to install the software with the printer unplugged...it will prompt you in the setup process for when to plug it in.
Best of Luck and let us know.I would just take it back.Fixed the problem. I removed the printer in Control Panel. I think it was a driver issue, and I will reinstall the driver. Thanks for your help!Yepper....

Solve : Monitors shut off, computer stays on.?

Answer»

(I SEARCHED and i've found nothing on this)

My computers had a colored history. My processor runs hot (60-70C) but I don't think it is the explanation to my problem.

At sporadic times my monitors shut off. The computer stays on. It does not go into standby, the computer keeps working but no matter how many times I turn on or off the monitor, put the computer in standby or physically remove my video card and put it back in they will not come back on.

The only solution is to restart or power off my computer. Which sucks.

I've updated my drivers for my video card.. and I'm out of ideas. Help? Just to clarify, you're saying the monitor will just randomly shut off but will revive after a restart?

If so: Chances are it's your graphics card overheating, since you seem to be having issues with excess heat in your computer's case. In my experience, GPUs are clocked for heat and an abnormally high AMBIENT temperature caused by, oh say a CPU at 70C, could cause them to lock up/do WEIRRD things. I'm sorry to tell you, but you really should solve that CPU problem.

If not so: Check the cables on your monitor. I know a person who's monitor power cable will fall out of the back of the screen if the desk is bumped a certain way. Took forever to figure that one out.Sounds more like a crash to me rather than monitor problems.
First go to control panel/performance and maintenance/system/advanced, and click the startup and recovery button.
Uncheck 'automatically restart' and check 'write an event to the system log'.
Now, if you get a system failure you may get a BSOD with error codes.Quote

Now, if you get a system failure you may get a BSOD with error codes.

...and you'll get to see just how helpful those are!

(Not "knockin'" your suggestion, S -- it's just that those error codes don't make the average user EXCLAIM, "Eureka!")I know all about the usefulness of error codes.
I've had a few lately.
It was more a way of finding out if it is a crash or a monitor problem.
I await with baited breath your better suggestion OK ... I see where you're goin' -- good idea!Let me reiterate. The computer does not crash. The monitors go black, the green LED behind the power button on them turns brown, indicated no signal and the computer keeps operating as usual. Plugging in a new monitor, unplugging and replugging in the old monitor, *censored* even removing the video card does not CHANGE it. Once they turn off the only way to get them back on is a restart. Personally, my computer has failed so many times that I considered trashing it. When I sent it in for repairs, it turned out that both the fan and cooling unit were malfunctioning! Heat can do strange things to hardware; even if the hardware is rated for said heat, constant head over an extended period will cause strange problems which are hard to diagnose.

That said, it's possible your computer may in fact be crashing - it's just completely losing power instead of showing a blue screen. However, this may or may not be the case.

I suggest you use the Vista event viewer, here's how to access it: Open the start menu, and type "eve" in the search box. Select Event Manager, and check through each of the logs to find an error that corresponds with your crashes; they are labeled by time and date.

If you cannot find an error that corresponds with the power-down, then the possible options are: the PSU, the video card, and the motherboard. Further instructions can be provided based on your response to this.

But seriously, getting the temperature of your computer down is definitely necessary, no matter what the problem ends up being.Like I said above, it sounds as if the graphics card is overheating and shutting itself down. This would prevent the computer as a whole from sending anything to the monitor, causing the monitor to go into it's power-saving standby mode.Eric, you say that plugging a new monitor in, etc, makes no change, then you say the computer keeps operating as usual??
How, if you cannot see anything on a screen, do you know??
Just because you can hear the drive spinning and fans whirring doesn't mean it hasn't crashed in some way.
If your computer has crashed (very likely in this case) of course there will be no signal as the video card will not be working. How do I know? The song/game/whatever making noise before it shuts off keeps going. Bah. I suppose it has to be the graphic card overheating.thanks for the posts If it's the graphics card, I would try to return the one you have (If you think it's worth the trouble TRYING) and purchase a new one.
