Answer»

Hi All,
I am running Vista business. My problem is I need to write to the "C" drive. I have turned off the UAC and still no JOY. I am a admin on the machine and have give myself full CONTROL RIGHTS to the "C" drive.

Anyone have any ideas as how I can get to write to the root of "C"?

Thanks
You're nor SAYING what the exact problem is.
What do you need to write?I have a program that writes a MS word doc to the root. This is a temp file and after it is used the file gets deleted. So I need to write a doc file to the root of "C"

First, open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the Search box on the Start menu, right-clicking the command prompt icon that appears at the top of the Start menu, then selecting Run as ADMINISTRATOR.

Solve : Administrator rights?

Answer»

I'm USING Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm the administrator, but I don't seem to have administrator rights. For example, when I try to change some startup programs(in Startup Manager, I'm TOLD I can't change anything in the registry, SEE YOUR ADMINISTRATOR. What can I do about this?In Vista, real Administrator account is hidden.
What is the exact message?Open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the Search box on the Start menu, right-clicking the command prompt icon that appears at the top of the Start menu, then selecting Run as administrator -- or just use the shortcut you created in the PREVIOUS hack.

Then enter this command and press Enter:

Net user administrator /ACTIVE:yes

From now on, the Administrator account is enabledQuote from: Mr.green on June 14, 2009, 07:43:50 AM

or just use the shortcut you created in the previous hack.

Yeah, this is totally not copy/pasted from somewhere else...I never say its my work. I accept my FAULT that I copy pasted that information but i forgotten to delete the line

"or just use the shortcut you created in the previous hack."

Sorry for that

Solve : Freezing soon after startup?

Answer»

Alright I have a windows vista that has been running very smoothly without a single crash or freeze until now, which for whatever reason freezes my computer to the point that I must power everything off with the external button. When I try to do a system restore to a previous date, it says some files on C:\ are CORRUPTED and asks to schedule a disk check. However, even when I can fit the normal shutdown in before a freeze, when I start up, the disk never gets checked and thus I cant fix any problems with my C drive and therefore I cannot do a system restore to about a week ago when it was working fine.I use Vista at WORK, but I'm not thoroughly familiar with it. Can you get it to BOOT to Safe Mode? Perhaps you can RUN the chkdsk from Safe Mode. The last time I tried safe mode (before this startup) it went straight to regular startup after trying to load for 20 mins.

more specs:
SP 1
Manufacturer: ASUSTeK
Model: N80Vr/c/m/b/n series
Processor: Intel core duo cpu T5800 @ 2GHz
RAM: 4 GB
Sys Type: 64 bit
I have real windows, did not crack or anything..its legit
I have had this comp for 6.5 months.Like Aegis said, if you could only get to Safe Mode, you could do a chkdsk from there. Also, you can use your Vista DVD and do a REPAIR of your installation. I think you could also try chkdsk using the DVD.

Yes, followed the instructions and REBOOTED computer using the c instead of d for the drive and sent the hijacker scan after ( the second scan)You're supposed to run sfc /scannow, not HJT.
HJT log is clean.
where do I find the sfc scannow? Sorry my replies are a little late, making supper.Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.Working on it now, send results soonCool Message comes up "Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache Insert your windows XP home edition CD now." I take it that the Windows XP program itself is CORRUPTED and I will need to get a new XP DISK and reboot the entire operation system? You cab actually borrow Windows CD, and run sfc again.Thank you for your help, will try to find a cd tomorrow and give it a try. Just out of curiosity, does that message mean that the operation system is corrupted or just that it needs the disk for other purposes? And if the shop won't give you you're XP CD tell them you've SPOKEN to Microsoft about it... Yes, the message means, some system files are corrupted.

Solve : Best proceedure for intalling Vista 64 bit in place of current Vista 32 bit.?

Answer»

I'm not real knowledgable when it comes to software and OS's so please help! I have another 2x2GB of the same memory i'm currently using ordered and also VISTA 64 bit Operating System so I can use the 8GB memory. I'll also be adding another VELOCIRAPTOR HD configured in RAID0.
What is the best way to transfer my programs I use now to the new hard drives and 64 bit OS? Most programs are downloaded, some from disc, so will I be able to re-download the 64 bit versions without having to re-purchase the software or will it just be a case of downloading the 64 bit drivers for what I already have.
I just built this PC a couple of weeks ago so there is not a lot of programs installed yet so would it be better to save everything I currently have to my external drive then transfer it to the new OS and HD's when I get them installed or should I plan to download / re-INSTALL everything from scratch.
With limited time off work lately I haven't done much RESEARCH yet on differences between 32-64 bit OS's so any suggestions are welcome.
Oh, and is this the appropriate forum for this topic or should it be in 'Software'?
Thanks,
MikeWell install it like you would (put it in and turn on your computer and boot from cd) and reformat and then just install. Make shure you back anything up you need.I think I can handle that part okay except for maybe the RAID set-up, but my motherboard manual covers the RAID part pretty well so hopefully I'll make it through that part okay. I guess my worries are more about what problems I'll run into with the 64 bit operating system. I've read so many post that say they had all kinds of problems running some of the programs that ran fine on the 32 bit system, even programs that are suppose to be compatible to run on 64 bit and with 64 bit drivers ect. But then again I've read some post that say Vista 64 bit runs fine with the majority of programs. I guess I may be getting the cart before the horse and I need to wait till the OS gets here tommorrow and see for myself. I was hoping to get some ideas of things that are common known issues when making this change. Thanks for the reply computeruler.
Anyone else? All the cries about apps not running on VistaX64 are a bunch of horseradish....
I've been running it since Christmas and have yet to find this happen...with the exception of an old app i have in my toolkit that was designed for Win98.

The most important issue for you since you are making the move is to make sure to collect 64bit drivers for all your devices...

Other than that you should be GOOD to go...Excellent! I have my bedroom window open right now listening for the UPS truck to deliver my package. I have everything backed up to external disc and am ready to make the changes. I may not be back online with this computer for a day or so until I get everything up and running and secure and all 64 bit drivers installed ect. I'll be sure to post in this thread on my status with the 64 bit OS.
Thanks guy's!!! Best of Luck and we'll seeya soon...Take a pic of him! The delivery people are so under-appreciated. Without them we wouldnt have computers in our houses

Solve : Program Closures?

Answer»

Hi! I have a fairly new, one-year old laptop. Well, I'm having an issue with it. Currently it's running on Windows VISTA, and I installed Norton 360 about 2 weeks ago. Lately, meaning yesterday, I STARTED it up, and after I got logged in, a BUNCH of programs stopped working, and closed. Even Microsoft programs. My Norton had 6 things turned off, and I could net get them restarted. I tryed getting into programs, IE would close the second it got to home. My toolbars have stopped working, everything. I don't think it is a virus, since today everything on Norton was back to normal, and I did a full system scan. Anyone have an idea what's going on.Start with uninstalling Norton using this tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
See, if it helps.I can't even get on IE though, because I'm on my DESKTOP right now, because my laptop won't open it.Use desktop to download it. Then, use USB stick to transfer it.Ok thanks.

Solve : System turns off on moving files?

Answer»

This may really be a hardware thing.

Hard Drives do not take much POWER. But they do require the power to be steady and free of noise. But the fact that it happens only when you are doing something intensive would suggest that is is not an issue with the drives and the PSU.

My best guess is that your CPU and FAN WARE not working well together. The CPU OVERHEATS and the system goes down. Check you FAN. Bllow out the dust. While you are in there, blow the dust out of the PSU also.Well just when I think I pin pointed this problem it happens in a whole different way. I clicked on my web browser to check my mail this morning and boom system goes down. Im wondering if this could possible be a video card issue (Nvidia GTX 260)

I will REPORT back on how moving smaller clumps of files works. And to answer your question jj no I have moved large quantities of files around on a harddrive with no issues.

**When I try to add my minidump file into a zip I get this message.*
"File not found or no read PERMISSION"

Solve : Virus destroyed system files?

Answer»

I downloaded a file that was PASSED by the current Avast checker, both in the .rar and .exe states. The computer was fine up to this point. When I executed this file Avast came up with .sys files having viruses and suspecting the .exe file doing some funny things I told Avast to place those files into the virus vault.

I managed to close the .exe but the pc was slow so SWITCHED it of and tried to reboot. Like BudaFire's post I am also unable to boot now, I get critical a error when I try to boot in, normal, last good known or without drivers (don't remember the name of this mode).

I am now unable to do system restore because I can't boot. What can do is boot my BartPE CD. This is how I am writing this post. I looked in the virus chest with windows explorer and can see the files that have been MOVED in there, but the filenames are changed to some alpha numeric. So, I can't move them back to windows\system32 folder.

What can I do to restore my computer?
Help would be appreciated.XP or Vista ? ?

Solve : error message when attempting to defrag.?

Answer»

Hey all, I was hoping someone out there might know the solution to this little problem Im having. Its been a while (1 year+) since Ive defragged my hard drive. I attempted to run a defrag this morning and this error message pops up. "MMC cannot open the file C:/windows/system32/dfrg.msc.

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later VERSION of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."

Now I am the administrator on this computer and Im not really sure what CHANGED in the last year, but Ive never experienced this problem before. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.Hello Happygolucky

U might want to check if the system tools r loaded. Also make sure u have at a MIN 15% HDD free. u can also foloow this link for some free SW for degrag.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defragmentation_softwareA year is quite some time to go without defrag...
However the MMC error may be an indicator of other issues.
How much free space is on this drive ? ?
To find out right click the C: drive in My Computer and select Properties...
Report back with Total drive space and Free drive space...
Meanwhile i would try running it in safemode.thanks for the replies, I have 140gigs of free space in my hard drive. Which is alot of free space. never thought of trying to do it in safe MODE, maybe Ill give that a shot although all virus scans and spyware scans come back negative. total drive space is 224 gigs.Go Start>Run, type in:
regsvr32 /u msxml3.dll
Click OK.

Type in:
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Click OK.

Restart computer.Ok, I gave the previous posters suggestion a try. I clicked start>run and typed in exactly what you told me to and both things succeeded. I restarted my computer and tried to defrag, still same error message. But thank you for your suggestion, I may end up having to bring her in to the computer shop =(I'd like to see, if the problem is contained to dfrg.msc snap-in only.
Go Start>Run, and type in:
devmgmt.msc
Click OK.
Does Device Manager open?yes, device manager does indeed open Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (HIT Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it here: http://www.filedropper.com/, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
(this applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc")
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Click OK.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries (Values) on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!I followed all the steps for not having a cd available, and it still wants me to insert a cd, which I cant for the life of me, find. Any other suggestions? thanks for your time=)That means, sfc found some errors.
You may try to borrow Windows CD to run sfc again.ok, thanks for your help!

Solve : Can not resrore with DVD?

Answer»

Hi

I got a DVD and learned how to do a back up. I ran one and got a message that said it was successful. Now I want to use it. I go to start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore - continue. Now it showes me the choices I have about which back up to run. I click on the one I know was made by running it on the DVD. At no time does it say to put the DVD in the computer but I have already put it in. I click on next and a panel comes up that has C and D drives showing. There is never ANYTHING about E DRIVE which is my DVD. If I go ahead and run the backup it does not run successfully. Some way I need the E drive to show so that I can tell the computer where the back up is that I want to run, The book I have tells me how to make a back up on a DVD but it never tells me how to use it. Any suggestions? Thanks BobWhat flavor of Windows ? ?
What app was used to create the backup ? ?Patio -
Sorry I forgot. I am runn ing Vista Home Basic. What does app stand for?Sorry Application...did you use the built in Vista backup or a program ? ?Patio - Thanks for the reply. As you see I'm not to sharp!! I got the backup on the DVD this way: start - all programs - accessories - system tools - backup and configuration - run a backup now - continue - Where do you want to save your backup - DVD RW Drive (E:) - next - after that I followed instructions and it worked . Backup complete. I hope this is the info you wanted. BobGotcha...
No need for an apology ...you're doing fine.
A few questions though...
System Restore only deals with system files...it will not backup an image you've created. So my 1st question would be:... Can a system restore solve your issues or do you need to really do a backup restore ?
A backup restore from a Vista image file will take the machine back to the day the image was created...all data you have since then will be gone....

Are you sure this is what you want to accomplish ? ?

Also what is on D: and is it another partition or another hard drive ? ?
Patio -
I have done backups from the ones listed but the book I have says that I should put a backup on a DVD, CD, or an external hard drive. As I said I put it on a DVD. The book does not tell me how to use the DVD to recover at some earlier time. I sometimes mess up and get in trouble. I want to back up to some point earlier and start over. I think all I can put on a back up disk is files and folders. I don't think Vista Home Basic will back up the whole computer.
Drive (C:) and (D:) are partions of the hard drive. I hope I have said that right.
If things get too bad I have a program that gives me a full factory restart. I have used that a couple of times when I have been in trouble. I hope I have answered your questions plainly. BobCorrect.
A full Vista image backup file would not fit on a DVD...so what you have is a backup of your User files and Folders.
Have you tried a system restore first to get back to an earlier point ? ?

If so and it's not what you want ...to run the Files backup in Vista go to the Start Menu/Control Panel/ Backup and Restore Center....when it asks for the backup simply point it to your DVD drive with the disc in.Patio -
Thank you for the help. While I was away I reread my book (Just the Computer Essentials by James A. White) and found a section about running restores from a DVD. He wrote for some upgrade of Vista so I had to modify some. That is where I generally get into trouble. I ran the restore and when it got done it said it was successful. I don't know if it was or not as I have no way of checking. I will let this soak in and tomarrow I will try what you suggested. The system White was using would give a complete PC backup but Vista Home Basic will not. Thanks again Bob Correct.
The Vista image backup feature is only included in Vista Business Pro and Vista Ultimate.Patio -

Your suggestion on how to do a backup worked. That is simpler than what I was doing. Now we have another problem. When I use the backup I have made and want to run a restore a panel comes up that asks "select the files and folders to restore". I do not know how to answer. I just want things put back like they were when I made the backup. Can you suggest a procedure? Thanks Bob If there is a Drop Down Windo just click on it and point it to the DVD drive where the files are burned to.Patio -
Thanks for all your time. I think you have solved my problems I have now. I don't do much with the computer. I get some e-mail and I have some favorites that I visit. Nothing real important but I just like things to WORK like they are supposed to. These forums (I read 3) have taught me a lot. I would have SENT this machine to the junk yard except for people like you. Thanks BobBob you're more than Welcome and Thanx for the kind words....stop by anytime ! !

Solve : MemoryManagement in Vista?

Answer»

Hello
I have a PC with 12 GB of ram because I need an application to run with huge graphics and memory consumption. But I feel the application does not work with high PERFORMANCE. Everything is 64 bit.
1-Is there any advise to check and see if the application is using the most of the available ram.
2- If not is there a way to dedicate more memory to a certain application
3- Can I increase the performance of the application by managing my graphics and computer.
4- If I have a 64bit application how much ram in maximum I can allocate for that.

Thanks
r_nerr- I thik you might be confused about memory allocation.

you don't Allocate memory for a program- the program allocates memory. The only time it wouldn't be able to would be if your RAM is full- 12GB is a lot of space.

to examine your RAM usage, use task manager's processes tab. there is a Mem Usage column there that may be of interest.

if you can give us more detailed specs (right now all you've given is 12GB of RAM and 64-bit (which is actually kind of implied from the 12GB part ) and exactly what issues your encountering, I'm sure we can help.

Also, for the record, increasing the RAM only increases performance up to a certain amount- at which POINT your pretty much throwing MONEY down a hole. For Vista, I'd put that at around 8GB. Of course more RAM increases performance but really it isn't worth the extra costs at that point.
Thanks for REPLYING me.The program needs lots of graphics and 3D rendering. It is a seismic data display. some times you need to display data which is above 80 GB on disk similar to a 3D cube and do rendering of the data. When I am displaying the data in 3D canvas then any movement is sadly slow. Any movement is not seem to be continuous.
When you wrote more than 8GB of ram is does not worth; how do you calculate it? is there any mathematical formula to see what is the relationship between ram usage and applications and graphics card specs.
when a program is 64 bit how does it MANAGE the memory compare to a 32 bit program.
Thanks

The person who had the computer ought to be able to sign in on his "old" account.

I BELIEVE account access can be had through Control Panel.

Solve : Windows x64 Themes?

Answer»

Last night I decided to CUSTOMIZE my Vista by downloading new themes for it. I used VistaGlazz to "patch" my system. I managed to install one or two themes correctly but I decided I wanted my system files the way they were so I WENT back to a restore point I made before even installing VistaGlazz. I look in my C:/Windows/Resources/Themes folder and I find two themes there one is Aero and one is Aero Reloaded I can't remember if Aero Reloaded was there before. Is this a default THEME or something sinister?

- I have Windows Vista Home Premium (64bit)It is a 3rd party theme. Do you have WindowBlinds or some other skinning application installed?
I did install Windows BLINDS at one point, uninstalled now though, I also have Tune Up. So it's not sinister?Quote from: Safety_First on April 13, 2009, 02:10:01 PM

I don't think so. If you have an antivirus PROGRAM you could scan it for threats.
I will now. Thanks for the help.

Solve : A couple computer problems.?

Answer»

Alright, so I have this old hand-me-down laptop that I restored - How I did it, I'm not sure, but it was working - my OS is "Windows Me" I believe? I had all my settings, pictures, vids, music, etc. Everything was working great for about a year. Well all of a sudden my screen started going black (EVERY once in a while). I was told by a friend (who generally knows much more about computers than myself) that if I simply took the battery out and shut it down, then restarted, the screen would work again. It worked... for a while. I would take the battery out, restart, and it worked like new until I was done with it. Since then it's gotten worse, to where I start it up and after about 5 minutes the screen goes black and it doesn't go back, no matter what I do to my dinosaur laptop. Sometimes it's black right from start up. I'm just wondering what's wrong with it, because I have no clue. I'm not too tech savey.
My other problem is with ANOTHER computer, its a Sony Vaio with Windows Vista - We haven't had any problems with Vista, I'm not sure what all the talk is about. Anyway, it's actually my dad's laptop and it's fairly new. He's been having problems with a certain file type, .THM? He DOWNLOADED some vids from his digital camera a while back and they played just fine on Windows Media Player. Just recently Windows no LONGER recognizes the file and won't play any of these vids... (He's getting pretty grumpy about it). Usually I can play with his computer a little bit and figure out the problem for him, but I'm not sure what's going on. Once again, I'm not tech savey in the least bit. Any info would be great. Ok first of since you have problems with two different laptops you need to have a different post for each. This will keep down any confusion as to which one people are talking about.

We can use this thread for your laptop and just start a new one for you dad's laptop.

Have you tried hooking an external monitor to your laptop to see if it is the comp that is having problems or just the screen?I agree with him. Try that if something pops out in the monitor then it means there is a problem with your laptop.

Solve : Windows Vista won't boot on my desktop?

Answer»

My DESKTOP computer just crashed. When I turn it on it just stays at the huge DELL boot screen. Windows won't start or anything. No key strokes do anything, not F2, F12, or anything else I've tried.

Windows Vista Home Basic
Dell manufactured (as mentioned)
1 GB RAM, CPU ?

I haven't tried any new websites or software in a long time, but my wife is always playing Flash media mini games (Yatzee, Diner Dash, Monopoly, etc from various sites) and don't know if it could be related. I run Norton scans regularly I have no idea what the PROBLEM could be. It was working fine, GOT shut down normally and won't restart.
Does it beep at all or give any sort of hexadecimal (A-F, 0-9) error/diagnostic code?

I just GET one beep from it as normal when I turn the power on. The first screen that pops up is the big DELL IMAGE and nothing happens after that.Is there any other information at all on the DELL boot screen? And the beep you get: is it a long beep or a short one?I almost forgot. It did have a USB flash drive in it when I turned it off (just a 1GB with mp3's on it). After the first unsuccessful boot I removed it from the USB port but nothings changed).Quote from: Blumpkin on April 12, 2009, 07:58:46 PM

Short beep as usual. The screen says F2=Setup and F12=Boot Menu like it normaly does. Everything looks fine, but it would only take a few seconds on this screen before. Now it's been stuck for at least 30 minutes with no changes or noises.

Solve : BSoD!!!?

Answer»

I was just messing around on my laptop a couple days ago and the BSoD appears...only for like 5 seconds, and then WENT away, so I had no time to read the text, although I know what most of it said anyways; first started off with something about "this may have been caused by a software or hardware change" and then the rest...I don't know. Lol.

But anyways, when the BSoD goes away and restarts my laptop, when I log in, I get multiple "svchost.exe" errors, asking if I want to terminate or debug the program, something like "0xf33333333" was the error CODE for it. I get those like 4 times, then about 4 "Generic Host for Win32 Applications" error messages come up.....network allowance messages for "svchost.exe" comes up countless times, Java network allowance messages show up, its like all these random things come up for no reason. And I'm afraid that if I do a System Restore, I'll lose all my data/media/documents/etc., it being that I have never had to do a System Restore, nor have I been in this situation.

However, I got my laptop into Safe Mode (which I am in right now) and it works without a charm.......I just don't understand...what is going on?!?!?System restore won't restore EVERYTHING...just restore it to a date when this didn't happen.

Try restoring it to a week before this problem happened. (You'll lose a week of editing/new files, but it will fix your problem...unless you cause it again...)Sounds like a driver issue...
Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and uncheck "auto restart on errors"...
Next time you get a BSOD it will stay...
Write down the entire message and post it here.I'll try to post the BSoD screen first......but like...how? Lol, its not like I can take a screenshot of it...or can I?
Yeah I'm a NOOB. Lol. Never been in this situation........so scared right now...Don't be afraid...we're here to help.

What new drivers have you installed lately ? ?
If any i would roll them back to the originals.
To check the drive go to Start/Run and type in chkdsk /f...let it run to completion and re-boot. Then run defrag and go to bed.
Call us in the morning with an update.Uhh, a couple weeks ago, I installed drivers for my PS3 Eye camera....then I tried to use it a few days ago and it "couldn't find" the device....,
Everything (besides that) worked fine.......but the driver wasn't identified in the stop message....

Safe Mode is unreliable now too...I can't open any applications....I'll click it like 10 times for 2 minutes straight and nothing happened. Only thing that worked was the Start menu and Windows Explorer (file bowser)
So...my laptop is quite useless now.I guess I should contact Microsoft??Do you have a restore CD ? ?If you can...
Download, and install WhoCrashed: http://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe
Open it, click Analyze button.
WhoCrashed will create report.
Copy, and paste it into your next reply.

Solve : game display problem?

Answer»

i play an online golf game "pangya" at goa.com. when i launch the game, the display BECOMES distorted and "stretched". there is a setting on my monitor labeled "auto" i can select that returns the display to normal. this occurs everytime i complete a game or enter game play. ive tried every display setting in control panel i could think to TRY without success. anyone have any idea how to correct this annoying problem? i have a windows vista os. When did this start? Has this always been a problem?

What monitor do you have? (model number)

What is your current screen resolution set to?its a mag innovision 17 inch FLAT screen. the screen resolution is 1024 x 768, and i run the ingame settings at 640 x 480 because it best fits the screen, but it doesnt matter if i run the game settings and the screen resolution settings the same, it still does this. its done the same thing on other games ive downloaded off the NET, as well. Do you know the native resolution of your monitor?

What happens if you try adjusting the ingame resolutions to something higher?not sure what the native resolution is, but the max is 1280 x 1024. i have it set to 1024 x 768 as my preferential. the ingame settings include a full screen or widescreen display. oddly, i dont see the problem when its in widescreen mode, but i prefer to play in full screen with the image larger as its easier to play.

Solve : I'm a Beginner W/a SIMPLE QUESTION on Windows Vista about File Folders?

Answer»

I'm a BEGINNER with operating PC'S especially with WINDOWS Vista.

I have CREATED a MAIN Folder and named it "Tim's Songs" for my MP3's and I also added subfolders, for songs That isn't NEW. I have changed the properties on the MAIN folder that I created for my MP3's .

SO HERE'S WHAT I EXACTLY DID I Right-Click my MP3 folder and clicked PROPERTIES to change the settings. In the properties option, under the customize section it ask "WHAT KIND OF FOLDER DO YOU WANT?" and right under it It said "USE THIS FOLDER TYPE AS A TEMPLATE:" so then I choose the "MUSIC DETAILS" option. I also checked the box to apply this template it to ALL Subfolders. NOW the MP3 folder that i made and all the subfolders in it has the same folder name, it's just that the text color changed into a blue text. So my folder named "Tim's Songs" has the same name but looks like this in blue, "Tim's Songs".

Is there any reason why it dose that?

Also is compressing My MP3 folder's CONTENTS and all its subfolder a beneficial THING to do? Why?

reply back asap thanks
Actually, sounds like you've already compressed them. The two reason folders usually have blue names in Vista is either because they're compressed and encrypted.

Solve : windows 7 video graphics card problem ...?

I'm RUNNING Windows 7 Ultimate (Build 7000) on an lenovo pc (Intel Pentium 4 - 2.8GHz, 2.00 GB RAM). my pc's actual graphics card is "Intel 82865G Graphics Controller" but windows 7 loads it as "standard VGA graphics card" which gives me a very bad video quality. howerver when i updated video graphics back to my "Intel 82865G Graphics Controller" & play any video or any desktop activity, computer hangs.

I keep having hard locks when using various software mostly involving video.

i tried changing carious 3d settings in opengl as well.

but one thing i've NOTICED is windows 7 comes preloaded with direct3D but my graphics card is DIRECTX 9 . do u think theres a conflict ther?

Does anyone please please help me out of this??Isn't "Windows 7" still in beta? I didn't know they had an "Ultimate" version out already.sorry ya . its beta only. plz help. can we chat ?? im online on GMAIL now. wat sayTry getting a hold of windows and telling them your problum or try to find a driver for vista and install it because it is just upgraded vista.
Hope this helps. Since it is just a "Beta" version of an OS there may not be a driver for your video card. You might have to contact Microsoft and see if they have a driver for it.

Did you get Windows 7 from Microsoft or did you down load it some where else?Quote from: mroilfield on April 11, 2009, 04:58:03 AM

Solve : Vista won't load on Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 Laptop?

Answer»

Good Day.

I have a Toshiba laptop that will not successfully load Vista.

It appeared to be working properly, until I ran an AVG virus scan. It was running slow, but okay for about 4 hours and I left it go. When I returned to the unit, screen was on but dark, lights on and wouldn't 'wake up'. Eventually POWERED off and has not been able to load to completion. I do get the error screen with the option to repair the start up; I accept that option, but never get more than a on-but-dark screen; power is still on.

What next? No Vista CD, just the key on the bottom of the unit.

Hope SOMEONE can help.

JCan you boot into Safe Mode? BIOS?Vista Recovery CD .iso DLoad.Tried starting in safe mode - several 'windows/system32/drivers' loaded, but then stopped at crcdisk.sys; after about a 2 minute stall, machine restarted and I got the Windows Error Recovery screen. Two options here, starting in a repair mode and starting NORMALLY. If I try to start normally, I eventually get a blue screen flash and then a reboot; if I try to start in repair mode, it GOES to the never-ending on-but-dark screen.

Don't understand the question on the bios.

Solve : Access Denied on Docs & Settings fldrs w/Admin Rights??

Answer»

I just got a Gateway laptop with Vista Home Prem. After using the Folders options to enable seeing all the system folders, I was attempting to copy my Firefox Profiles folder in Documents and Settings from my desktop to the laptop, when I first recognized that M'soft (in their infamous propensity not to leave well-enough alone) changed the convention they used in W2k and XP. Fine, I found out which folders to go to thanks to a thread I left at another forum. However, to my disgust and frustration, I found that even with Admin rights, I was still being denied access to these Program DATA, and User folders where those profile folders are.

So, I call Gateway Support in India (don't get me started) only to find out that they want me to run a complete Restoration procedure because it was their opinion that the permissions may have become corrupted. This, despite the fact that I just bought this machine on 4/2, and the only major change that I've made (which was within warranty) was to use Vista's partitioning utility to divy up the HDD into several other partitions to protect my data.

Call me STUBBORN or stupid, but I refuse to TAKE such draconian measures based on such a flimsy, and frankly illogical basis. So, I'm posting here, and to other geeky places to get INFORMED opinions, rather than pat, sledgehammer answers.

PLEASE HEP ME,
GPLHave you tried taking ownership of the folders/files to which you are denied access?

Take your pick here..

Good luck

Solve : searching for files in window vista?

I have DOWNLOADED a _setup.exe file and cannot locate it Check your Downloads folder...Press F3 and search for it.I've had Vista for over a year and still can't figure out it's filing system. Try this. It WORKS for me. GO to your C drive, type in *.exe in the search box which will probably give you nothing. Choose Advanced search and put *.exe in the Specify Name box, select the C drive and start your search. You will probably find many Setup.exe files. You can ALSO specify the date of the file which will NARROW down the search. Luck.Quote from: GlitchPC on March 28, 2009, 11:26:15 PM

Solve : Vista Hard drive help??

Answer»

Okay, so I'm running an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC with a SAMSUNG HM250JI hard drive (250 gb). I don't know very much about computers so forgive me if I leave out important info. I had XP installed for a year, and today I decided to reformat and install VISTA. When I bought my laptop I had XP installed, so I just used the Vista recovery disks Futureshop gave me. I restarted and booted with them, and everything seemed to work great. The problem I am having is that now Vista is telling me my hard drive has only 32 gb total, when I should have a lot more (I know Vista is big but seriously...). I have tried changing the system restore settings and that didn't help at all. I was wondering if it's possible that my computer didn't actually reformat and just add Vista on or something? Any help would be REALLY appreciate... thanks!Go Start, and in "Start search" type in:
diskmgmt.msc
Hit Enter.

What does Disk Management tell you about the hard drive? That actually solved my problem, thanks a lot! I FOUND the other volume (?) of my hard drive and was able to extend the first part into the rest, thanks for the help! You're welcome

Solve : Vista Recovery boot, does not work?

Answer»
I have a Toshiba Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 laptop that will not successfully load Vista.

Tried starting in safe mode - several 'windows/system32/drivers' loaded, but then stopped at crcdisk.sys; after about a 2 minute stall, machine restarted and I got the Windows Error Recovery screen. Two OPTIONS here, starting in a repair mode and starting normally. If I try to start normally, I eventually get a blue screen flash and then a reboot; if I try to start in repair mode, it goes to the never-ending on-but-dark screen.

Used a Vista recovery disk to boot from; windows appeared to be loading but I still ended up at the on-but-dark screen. Is this thing in permanant hibernation?

help.

please.
I feel you need to get a FULL Version Vista DVD and to install clean. I researched this in other forums and nothing seems to fix it that I was thinking may help, like check disk and SFC Scan. It seems you can't even boot LOG and find a solution from the posts I read.

If you have problems after trying that it may be a hard drive failure.

Maybe someone else here has an idea.

If the unit is under warranty be sure to contact support before attempting any fixes.Has this computer been dropped?User says it was not dropped. Unit is <1 YEAR old but out of warranty.

Solve : Strange Noises on Start Up?

Answer»

I bought my computer new in early August, 2008. I've had it eight months. It's an HP Pavilion desktop with an AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor. It has two 350 GB hard drives. The operating system is Windows Vista. It has worked very well until just recently. The last couple of days the computer has been making some strange noises. It only happens when the computer boots up or when it wakes up after being asleep. Otherwise, it's as quiet as ever. What can be the problem? It's under warranty. Do I need to take it in for repair? The noises are pretty loud. Kind of like a rumbling. They stop after the computer gets going.

Thanks for your help!
VickiHi! have you cleaned your system..... shut the system down and pull the side cover off your case....look at the CPU cooler for dust on the fan and heat sink....also check to see if dust is on any fan(s).... if so.... purchase a can of air (follow directions)..... use the air to clean all I mentioned.... also could a bad fan.... so start up the system when cool and listen and look to see all fans how the fan or fans are working..... good luck!!! Does it sound like its coming from the disk drive?Sounds like a flaky hard drive...download HDD HEALTH and scan your drives ....you may want to start backing up anything important.

http://www.panterasoft.com/Karnac, as far as I can see, HDD Health has no options for scanning a hard drive, plus it's a beta program, a poor choice for recommendation.

Vicki, your hard drive is probably fine. Dying hard drives tend to click, not rumble. What you're describing actually sounds like a fan that is dirty, and not a failing hard drive. Let's try to locate where exactly the sound is coming from before we make any more assumptions.

Remove the side cover of the computer and sit in a position so you can see inside the computer when you turn it on. DON'T TOUCH any of the internal components when it's plugged in or turned on. Just get familiar with the location of any fans in the computer. There should be one on the motherboard attached to a piece of metal (processor heat sink) and one at the rear of the case at least. There also might be one in the side cover you removed, the video card, or even in the lower front of the case. Once you've FOUND them all turn it on and listen for the sound.

Once you've located the sound, shut down the computer, then replace the cover. Let us know what you find.

-=EDIT=-
Can't believe I forgot to mention there might be one on the video card. I don't recommend you stick your finger into any of them either. My graphics card fan used to do that, make a growling noise at start up then settle down.
I opened the side up and gently touched it, that's how i found out what it was.
Stopped doing it now.

Lol^

I think that your rumbling noise is coming from a fan that's spinning too fast or too slow at startup. It was new, my mate had the exact MODEL i had and his did the same, it was as though it needed to 'balance' itself.Quaxo, thought I said this on the first post...... Good to see we are on the same track.....I forgot the Vidcard fan too.... hope LouisiannaGirl gets back to us Thanks so much for reading my post and writing all your comments. I really appreciate your willingness to help. I know it's important to give as much information as possible when asking for help. I forgot to mention that I know how to use a computer, but I do not know how to remove the case and look inside. I'm afraid my PC would really be in bad shape if I attempted that! I know my limitations.

Today, when I started up my computer, it was really quiet. I was amazed because I had been worrying about it. It has been running now for about 30 minutes and is almost totally silent. If I get close to the tower, I hear a faint noise like any working machine might make.

Thanks again for your replies. I will keep you posted if it goes back to making that noise.

This is not a forum just for advanced computer users, is it? I sometimes need help with my computer, and I am thankful for all those people in cyberland who have the experience and knowledge to help!

Vicki
Happy to hear from you..... This site is for all LEVELS of computer know-how..... As far as knowing about your case.... just take the left side panel off.... sometimes thumb screws or a latch...whatever!.... look inside.... you can't messup anything as long as you DO NOT TOUCH THE INNER WORKINGS... static and all that.... It sounds like your system needs a good cleaning.... dust is a system killer.... over heatting etc.... you'll do just fine..... Good Luck!! Quote from: LouisianaGirl on April 08, 2009, 05:33:14 PM

Both! members can both seek help, and if they believe they can offer advice to others they can do that as well!

Everybody is welcome.

Robit, If she's not comfortable removing the case then we really shouldn't be pushing her to do so; although it does sound like a possible dust issue.Hi PC_Programmer: your point is well taken, however she should know if nothing is done a bigger problem could ac-cure..... perhaps it will be a learning experience and all participants in this forum know that these are suggestions.......LouisianaGirl, it's understandable if you're not comfortable opening the side of your computer. Honestly, there's not much damage you can do in just opening the side, so long as you don't start poking your finger or screwdriver into things.

However, if you're not comfortable doing so, is there someone you know who might be able to check for you should the problem occur again? It might be a good idea to do it and also have the innards cleaned of dust. A buildup of dust can cause heat issues over time. Some computer repair shops can do this for you as well.

Solve : Switch between windows icon missing?

Answer»

I have re-installed Vista and the "desktop" and "switch between windows" ICONS that should be on the left side of the bottom toolbar have diappeared. How can I GET them back please?

Thank You#1 Welcom to CH

#2 I seached Google for "Switch between windows" and got this link top of the page http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistadesktopui/thread/05a7172e-99bc-4f44-a957-86de5e0358c8/
--------------------------------------------------------
What you are at you are looking for is the "Switch Between Windows" Icon.

If you have not already done so, you will need to activate the Quick Launch toolbar on the taskbar to get to this again. The Quick Launch toolbar should appear as several icons directly to the right of the Start Menu Button.

1. To activate the Quick Launch Toolbar, follow these steps:
2. Right-Click anywhere on a blank spot of the Taskbar.
3. Choose Toolbars from the menu that appears.
4. Select Quick Launch from the next menu so that it is checked.

You should then be able to click on the Switch Between Windows icon now and use the Flip 3D FEATURE.
------------------------------------------

I ditched Vista so I hope this helps ya
Thank you Fat Basterd. It worked.

I did have the Quick Launch toolbar showing but it only had IE and Safari icons on it.

I followed your Google Search result and the icon is there now and it works.

Much appreciated

Mike
Glad to HEAR I could be some help

existing installed softwares in XP? Please help me with proper suggessions.
Its very urgent
THANKS
devduttaa There not the same thing. In other words if you installed dos 6.22 you wouldnt have xp any more and run EVERYTHING in the COMMAND line. Thus spracht Squallathustra

He is right. Cannot be done except in virtual machine.
If you partitoned you drive or made like a dual boot. Dos 6.2 is a seperate os in its self.Quote from: squall_01 on April 08, 2009, 11:46:24 AM

If you partitoned you drive or made like a dual boot. Dos 6.2 is a seperate os in its self.

But you do the oldest OS first so he would have to remove XP then partition the drive & install MS DOS 6.2 in C:\ then install XP in e.g. D:

Why not just boot off a floppy or pen drive or CD when you want MS_DOS?

Can I download dos 6.2

No.

It wouldnt be legal. At any rate that is true you could do that..... Quote from: squall_01 on April 08, 2009, 12:09:18 PM
It wouldnt be legal.

Actually, if you hold a valid licence for any MS operating SYSTEM later than DOS, that means Windows 3, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, you can LEGALLY install and use MS-DOS, but the question is, how do you get it legally?Buy it from themUse an image program and CREAT an image of the XP partition...
Delete all partitions...
Create an active partition of say 1G.
Use the rest of the HDD space for an extended partition...
Install DOS 6.2 to the first partition...
Install any neccessary device drivers...
Power down...re-boot to the XP CD and install XP.Quote from: Dias de verano on April 08, 2009, 12:18:59 PM

That is actually an upgrade for MS-DOS 6.2, not a complete version.
so probably what he really wanted? He could use virtal machine and do it that way.

Solve : - Adjusting Volume Crashes Programs -?

Answer»

I have a Dell Studio XPS with vista on it. When I turn the volume up or down, I get a pop up with the volume control on it. This crashes a lot of my programs. How do I disable this pop up?What does the pop up say?it doesn't say anything. It's a Picture of a speaker with the current volume under itDid you install any programs recently?

How long has this been happening?Volume pop-ups like this can cause programs to crash, especially full screen GAMES. I get the same problem with most games and my HP laptop which has a similar pop-up when adjusting the volume.

SPECIFICALLY what model of XPS is this? It's a BRAND NEW laptop. No installs yet besides two games, fire fox, and adobe.

XPS 1340, Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB 3M L2 Cache)Ok, for that model, the OSD is handled by Dell Quickset. I'm not sure how Quickset works, but if there's a settings windows for it, there might be a way there to shut off the volume OSD. I'll keep looking, but that might be a place for you to start.

-=EDIT=-
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?s=cdbe67f4425c76eaafbbc6753705a38f&showtopic=601543&pid=589000261&st=0&#entry589000261

There you go. Specifically post #4. Tells how to disable the OSD for volume.I don't see this quickset button they talk about, and none of my buttons in that area do anything like that....Try looking in the control panel, there's sometimes an icon there for things like this. You'll most likely need to use the classic view to find it.

-=EDIT=-
Also check the Start Menu programs and see if there might be a folder there with a link to what you need. It's gotta be somewhere since it's obviously running.I went through the start up menu twice, and I don't have anything. I thought It might be in one of the dell folders, but didn't see anything. Didn't see anything in the control panel besides sound. And didn't find anything in there either. The closest guess I have is the IDT Audio Control Panel, and I didn't see anything in there either. I killed a bunch of tasks in the program MANAGER to find if I could just guess what program is running and nothing stopped it either.Re-install your MBoard Drivers and re-enable any processes you have disabled.
Power down and re-boot...

Any better ?Ok I got the issued fixed, but for anyone trying to figure out what I had to do:

I had to download Dell_QuickSet_A05_R200495 and then uninstall it.Glad you got it sorted.

Solve : computer shuts down and reboots automatically?

Answer»

HP laptop running win vista shuts down and REBOOTS every so often. How can I fix this. CLEAN all the dust out of the machine and check to be sure that the fans are running right. This can happen if the machine over heats.

some more info: the laptop lights go on LIKE the laptop is going to boot up completely, but there is no display at all before the computer shuts down again.

so CLEANING is one issue, but why is the video not displaying?
How old is the laptop/ still under warranty? If so back up your stuff and take it back.

Alan <>< alan,

no the computer is not under warranty anymore.

Except all mentioned above it could be also the RAM memory or some of capacitors has blown.
Cheers.

Is it an sdhc card?

This "icon" sounds like something done by manufacturers software- which differs amingst manufacturers, surprisingly enough Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 31, 2009, 12:30:34 AM

I already tried that ONE, with no clear RESULT... I think we have a client WHOSE command of English is fairly minimal.

Solve : Device manager glitch??

Answer»

Just checking my graphics card driver dates and I noticed something strange as I moved the mouse over the close window cross. INSTEAD of just ILLUMINATING as I move the mouse over it, it starts blinking furiously like I was moving the mouse on and off the button very quickly. I only GET this in device manager on a device properties window. Is this a known glitch or do I just have a weird PC?

Windows Vista SP1http://www.eggheadcafe.com/video.aspx?videoid=189233

It's a harmless flaw from what I've READ and it's been REPORTED by tons of people in both Vista and Windows 7. Mine does it, too.Aww I thought my PC had personality.
