Have you tried vlc media player ?
It has a good convert option and I believe it can also convert flash and it's free

vlc player download http://www.downloadvlcplayer.net/http://www.swftoavi.com/
is one example... google 'swf to avi' for others.

The resultant avi should be fine for you tube

Have you requested the Dutch site to re-send the file yet ? ?
Ah ha...it would appear that you have a flash projector file...this has the flash plus the player altogether and will certainly be rejected by convertors.
You need the swf itself ...heres one software example but there are others. You can even use a hex editor as the 2 parts are simply STUCK together.
http://www.northcode.com/blog.php/2007/08/02/Extract-SWF-files-from-Flash-Executables
then get the result converted

Solve : Cant play games?

Answer»

Was playing game, then screen froze. I RESTARTED and now get this same ERROR message when I try to play.

http://oi53.tinypic.com/243f4i8.jpgHi ,

May be your pc has not sufficient resources for that game (RAM and GZ) , try playing that game with minimal requirements or go to PRODUCER's web sites to CHECK its hardware requirements.

To play it again, or at least try , i suggest to reinstall it.

Hope that helps.

Sound like a hardware problem. To me. I had the same stuff happen to me and they told me it was my hard drive. That my hard drive was going out I don't know but that's what they told me at BestBuy.

You really should never believe people at places like Bestbuy.

As I noted in a thread here (started my Nathan, if I recall) I sure am glad I know how to fix these things myself; I get shudders thinking of all the people who actually trust places like bestbuy...

All that being said, It could very well be a hard drive problem; If it freezes Solid (no errors, no nothing; mouse stops moving- SOLID) it could be the hard drive. But it might not be.

Let me try to explain... First off, the optical drive is a 39pin.
yes. Patio was probably thinking of the 80-conductor type ribbon cable, for IDE drives. There are two types of ribbon cables, they both have 40 pinholes (one is sometimes plugged, as in your case):

The older 40-conductor cables(bottom):

and the newer 80-conductor cables:

(source: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confCable80-c.html)

Basically, you need the newer one for faster hard drives- which pretty much means any hard drive. If yours is using the former type (40-conductor, thicker wires), get a replacement 80-conductor cable from a local store, and see if that helps.

Aside from that, we might be able to learn something from the bluescreen errors.

Download BlueScreenView from here
unzip the downloaded file, and double-click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to Edit - Select All
Go to File - Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Actually.. no i didnt think I had to mention it... computer runs fine as long as I don't use the CD-Rom or plug the printer or scanner in USB. The error prior to me reformatting was something about a physical memory dump. I am just trying to figure out why my CD-Rom, Printer and Scanner are locking up my system.
It's impossible to say; there could be any number of causes, from a bad power supply to a damaged motherboard. The bluescreen info might be helpful, it could just be a bad USB driver.Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 07, 2010, 12:03:09 PM

If you're a user of Windows XP or Windows Vista, MICROSOFT includes a program called Error Checking which can perform some very basic tests and can even attempt to correct errors as it finds them. Here is a web page that List of the Best Free Hard Drive Testing Tools http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm You can do that. And it was not my computer it was my grandma's and she had to take it there or else it would void her warranty. So we had to take it there and the new hard drive was free.Wow. Usually BSODs are pretty consistant but yours are all over the place. You mentioned a graphic driver earlier; have you installed any 'driver update' type of 3rd party program? Have you updated your BIOS to the wrong version? I would also recommend re-seating your RAM and checking your BIOS version and maybe see if your manufacturer has released an update. I doubt the HDD is at fault here, but from what you've told me it sounds like a BIOS, ram, or a motherboard problem.Quote from: OpenSource on October 07, 2010, 08:49:18 PM
Wow. Usually BSODs are pretty consistant but yours are all over the place.
BSOD's are more likely to be "all over the place" then consistent, especially when it comes to hardware problems.

Quote

The wrong BIOS version would cause the computer to be unable to boot, and even if it didn't it wouldn't cause BSOD's "all over the place"

Quote

Agree, since RAM could be the cause. But the Power supply, CPU, or motherboard could just as easily be as well; and one of the modules itself could be faulty.

Quote
and checking your BIOS version and maybe see if your manufacturer has released an update.
the BIOS is almost entirely redundant here, the BIOS is a piece of software, and all software is deterministic. Therefore, so too would the BSOD's be deterministic; but, as you observed yourself, they are "all over the place", so clearly a piece of software is unlikely to be the cause. Well, I can now install some cds through the cd rom, but others freeze it solid. Tried usbs and i can use one, but more than that computer still freezes solid!!I did a driver scan... drivers all up to date... Here is my computer info. hope it will HELP solve my problems.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]"The wrong BIOS version would cause the computer to be unable to boot, and even if it didn't it wouldn't cause BSOD's "all over the place"

Where are you getting your information?

I usually see stop 7b errors a lot when there is a problem with the hard drive booting, etc. Most blue screen errors are very consistant.

I have also seen really wierd things when the wrong BIOS version is installed. For instance on one customer's computer they had the wrong bios version installed and they couldn't plug the keyboard and mouse in at the same time without the computer freezing. Updated the bios and viola! problem fixed. A driver update site or downloader could have very possibly detected his system and simply have given him an incorrect (but close) bios update. I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN.

Not sure where you're getting your information, but once you've gotten a little more hands-on experience (I have about 13 years worth), you start seeing certain patterns.

Also, without seeing the computer, who knows what's wrong with it. I'm just going by what information I've been given. You consistantly undermine my posts with your false information....is your epeen shrinking or something? You are on the short road to banland. The last piece of info I got from Drivermax. I wanted to make sure all drivers were up to date, which they were. I have more experience with software than hardware, and if this is a hardware problem I need to know. I have self taught myself everything I know. But this is frustrating me and I need to fix it, but keep getting different advice. I am still not sure where to start looking for the problem.Ah ok drivermax. Now we're getting somewhere.

I would go to your computer's manufaturer website and download your original chipset/motherboard drivers and uninstall drivermax.Driver max is a driver scanner... once I am done using a program I always uninstall it if I am not going to use it any further. My bios seem fine but thank you for you suggestion. Tried using CD Rom today... It froze my computer solid AGAIN. Tried plugging printer and scanner in USB ports. Darn thing froze. I am about to throw the flippin thing out the window. Now my display is blinking, twitching. Tested to see if it was the monitor, its not.

This computer is crying for help and I can not for the life of me understand whats wrong!!!Quote from: OpenSource on October 08, 2010, 02:31:28 PM
"The wrong BIOS version would cause the computer to be unable to boot, and even if it didn't it wouldn't cause BSOD's "all over the place"

Where are you getting your information?
The Wrong BIOS version would affect the BIOS code. The BIOS code takes a backseat once the computer switches to protected mode. BIOS code can only run in real-mode. The fact is, the "wrong" BIOS version would be more likely to cause a completely and entirely unbootable situation. BIOS version-related-issues can only surface during the short time the BIOS code has control. As far as hard drive "support" from the BIOS goes, I suppose there is a corner case: 1999-era and earlier PCs often have BIOS updates that overcome BIOS hard drive size limitations; however, the problems caused by an older (version without said "patch") will nearly always be an unrecoverable hang when the BIOS inspects the IDE device using the ATA Identify command or the drive will be misrecognized. You may be thinking "aha! so you agree with me!" but no. If the BIOS was the wrong version then this misrecognition would have occured from the get-go, it wouldn't have suddenly cropped up out of nowhere.

Quote

This of course has nothing to do with the BIOS (although it can be caused by using AHCI with a older OS that doesn't have built-in SATA support, but that's an OS problem, not a BIOS problem), and is a problem with the loader/device driver, or possibly the drive itself. When I used the words "more likely to be 'all over the place' then consistent, especially when it comes to hardware problems." I meant, it's more likely, not 100% surefire to be all over the place; and by hardware, I was referring more to the CPU, RAM, IDE controllers... or IDE cables... and various other solid-state devices, not necessarily the hard drive, which is probably not the issue (given the all-over-the-place nature). I admit my wording was ambiguous there. Perhaps I should introduce a nitpickers corner.

Several things; first, that isn't a BSOD. second, the incorrect BIOS was initializing the PS/2 BUS wrong. There is no denying the wrong BIOS can cause problems, but it can only cause problems within the few seconds it's active. Usually the wrong version means an entirely unbootable system. lastly, that could very well have been a case of an outdated BIOS, or possibly a revision with a bug that causes that (initializing the PS/2 Bus incorrectly, causing concurrency issues). (and if this was USB, even more so; the USB root hubs on the motherboard are of course initialized by the BIOS (for keyboard support as well as the ability to boot from Mass storage devices). If the wrong version is installed this bus may not be initialized properly. causing the issues you perceived.

Right. We all are. And the fact is at the very least IMO this problem is almost certainly not BIOS related going by that information.

I have experience too. Funny how I've never felt it important enough to mention. In fact, you'll note that my certifications list in my profile is empty. But I could fill it with several; I just feel that they are almost wholly redundant, since almost all the tests I needed for them could probably have been passed by a grade-schooler (and those that didn't are wholly irrelevant to this site, so posting them would be even more vain). Until IT actually becomes a profession (things like licenses and regulatory agencies like they have for law firms, contractors, Accountants, etc) almost all "certifications" will be wholly meaningless and merely words on paper. And I refuse to hold out said paper in front of others as some sort of pseudo trump card "Oh yeah, well I have certifications! So I must be right! I have experience! So I trump u!". This is pretty much the same reason I LISTED my experience as "Experienced". I let my posts speak for themselves, and people can decide for themselves. (which I suppose they would do anyway).
Pre-emptive snarky comment: "Well I have decided for MYSELF! LOL!"

Solve : Computer issue. Please Help?

This problem started about 3 MONTHS ago and I've been trying things to make it stop. Nothing I have done has seemed to work. I tried replacing RAM, virus scanning and the like. This video shows the problem in action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7kawJQ2GJM

I used Audiosurf, which I run in windowed mode, as an example of what is happening. Basically I start it up and the game goes into freak mode. I have no clue why it does this, but I'm getting pretty tired of it. I can run games in full screen no problem, but this also happens when I use PROGRAMS such as Photoshop, or video editing software.

Any help will do. Thank you.

The emails are however there, because if you click on any of these four, where relevant, the message/attachments opens.

Solve : Extract files from an archive issue?

Answer»

Hi ,

I should do an archive which contains different files, which have different path locations.

Let's say that in my archive i should pack text files having this paths: "C:\myFolder\fis1.txt" , "C:\myFolder\fis2.txt", "C:\myFolder\mySecondFolder\fis3.txt". After archive was done, it goes on another PC and there when it is unpacked it should create the same directory structure and place files on same locations. So for example when it is unpacked fis3.txt should be in "C:\myFolder\mySecondFolder\fis3.txt" and other two files in "myFolder".

The folder hierarchy exist on second pc and has the same structure as one from first pc, only files from archive must go on the same path as in pc1, the place where archive was done.

I tried to achieve this using Total Commander but i could not do it, please any ideas are welcomed ! Also other tools could be used 7zip or stuff like that, i believe that SOMEHOW this could be done without writing my own application (any way i have not enough TIME for it).

Thanks! Total Commander will do what you want...you just need to know how to use it...
What exactly are you trying to accomplish here ? ?Hi patio ,

Thank you for posting.

What i tried to do was to create an archive where the path to a file to be memorized, so that when it is extract the file to go "on the same path" on another pc where that directory structure already exists.

Yes, using Total Commander i achieved this.

Total Commander steps:

1. Did my search using my conditions.
2. In "Find Files" WINDOW clicked on "Feed to listbox" button.
3. Selected the files which goes to be archived.
4. Clicked on "Pack files" button.
5. Happy with my created archive .

Good news indeed...

Well, I can see it with people, who might not even KNOW they have a pirated install, but when we are talking, say, computer stores selling pirated copies as LEGIT for the same price, that's more purposely dishonest in the name of profit; burn a 5 dollar CD (probably less) and poof, they sell it for 200+ dollars, of almost pure profit.
I believe the "OEM" in question is that they sell a speical version of windows, office, etc for system builders only. Building a barebones kit makes you the "manufacturer".Quote from: OpenSource on October 09, 2010, 09:35:46 AM

Only if you can persuade Microsoft you are a commercial seller of complete computer systems.
WOW, I certainly didn't expect all those kinds of RESPONSES. (I hope you guys are all friends still) To those of you that were honestly trying to help me solve my dilemma, THANK YOU very much. I really appreciate all the time and effort that you put into it. Always have. I am deeply indebted to all of you members and experts that are willing to share your knowledge and talents with those of us who are less informed.
That being said, I have decided what I am going to do....I am going to trash the "OEM" copy of Office 2003 that I PURCHASED from eBay (I will eat the $32.00) and go shopping for a legitimate copy. That being said, I have decided what I am going to do....I am going to trash the "OEM" copy of Office 2003 that I purchased from eBay (I will eat the $32.00) and go shopping for a legitimate copy. I may have my price, but it is certainly not $32.00...(the older I get the higher it gets)

good call. 32$ definitely raises a LOT of questions; that's WAY too cheap, to me. At Patio says, you might want to also check out OpenOffice.

Yep, it's DSP; should be fine. Often times OEM us used erroneously and interchanged with "OEM".

I can tell you that Office 2003 works on Win7 64-bit; I have it installed on this win7 machine and it works fine. I believe there are people running Office 97 just fine on win 7, as well.
THAK YOU both.. I will look into OpenOffice. I though that I checked it once and I could only use to to read, not write or modify... See ya JIM

DSP means "Delivery Service Partner". OEM means "Original Equipment Manufacturer" and normally would have the hardware manufacturer's name stamped on it. DSP software is similar to OEM software however there is no manufacturer's name stamped on the manual or printed on the license. DSP software is more generic and OEM software is sold directly to the computer manufacturer. Thus the distribution channel is different for DSP. DSP software is distributed for smaller system integrators and system builder hobbyists for "clone" or no-name computers. Like OEM versions, DSP versions often come with only an electronic help manual, which is built-in to the software or a small getting-started manual. The software itself contains the same programs as the Retail Box version, except the Retail Box version normally comes with a small printed manual. Both OEM and DSP Microsoft software include a COA, which is a Certificate Of Authenticity label or sticker from the manufacturer.

Since DSP and OEM software is typically sold to more advanced users, system builders and computer consultants there is no technical support provided by the software manufacturer. However, because of the substantial support savings to the manufacturer the DSP and OEM versions are offered for sale at a significantly lower price.

Did you get a COA with both products? If so, I would hold BACK from trashing anything.

As far back as Office 2000 is OK apparently, but Office 97 not compatible. Office 97 is not officially compatible with Windows 7, but it might be possible to install - not all features may work though.

Salmon Trout, thanks for that post above. Makes clear what DSP and OEM are.

Solve : locate pictures?

Answer»

I have more then one question, I hope someone can help. 1. Is it possible to locate pictures you sent on someone elses computer? What I mean is, can you tell if someone saved the picture you sent? 2. I had some pictures on my camera that were deleted. This happened awhile AGO. Is it possible to recover them? 3. Can you locate pictures online that could have been posted, even if you forgot where you posted them. If anyone can help, it would be really helpful.No.Short answer is no, long answer HOWEVER would be yes it's possible but requires a bit of work.

1. It is possible to track by encoding images. This is pretty much a VIRUS and will be blocked by today's OS security patchs and the anti-virus.

2. Anything deleted isn't actually removed until OVERWRITTEN and can possibly be recovered by 'undelete' software.

3. GOOGLE can find all indexed - if you know how to use it correctly. Using 'Advance Google Image Search' allows you to locate pictures easily from shape, size, part of the filename, description, format, colors, etc. It goes as far as face detection, photo content, line drawing or clipart, etc.

I feel stupid, but... Usually, you have a bar at the top left of your computer, which includes history, bookmarks, tools and other stuff. I have lost it, and can't find how to get it back. If so, press the F11 key to toggle full screen mode.thanks, I just tried it.... but it made the other stuff, like the google bar disappear. Yes, I meant on IE, or more exactly on Firefox, my usual browser. It must be something like f11, but it did not WORK!right-click on the left or right inside of the address bar and then click on "menu bar".that is quite nice to have it again! thanks a lot.Sure.

Solve : Windows Media player won't run, can't dbl click on a video file and lauch it?

Answer»

Out of the blue I am not able to either launch Windows Media Player, or go via windows explorer to the directory where all my videos are (that have been downloaded off the web from different sources) and double click on an item and play it. I get these messages:
"C:\Programs (x86)\Windows\player\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" "You cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate PERMISSIONS to access them." - When I click "OK" that MESSAGE goes AWAY and another takes it's place -
"Windows can't open this item. It may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Do you want to delete this item?" - and I clicked no and am back to where I was when I tried launching WMplayer.
Help!!!
I have run a scan in both Malwarebytes and in Spyhunter 4 and they say that I have no problems. Nor did Norton find anything. I also ran a scan with Windows Defender and it said my computer is running normally.
I am running 64 bit eMachine W Windows 7 Home PREMIUM on an eMachine w/ a Pentium Dual Core E5300 @ 2.6Ghz, 4GB RAM.how long ago did this start happening? if it was fairly recent you can just system restore to a point where you knew it was working and do a system file check (sfc)

Solve : Confused about syncronizing PCs and HDs?

Answer»

I have 2 laptops that I am PRESENTLY using. One is a Panasonic with Windows XP and a 60 GB HD. The other is a new Acer with Windows 7 and a 320 GB HD. In addition, I have 2 EXTERNAL HDs that I use for backup -- a 160GB and a 1000GB.

I want to have my main files synced on both laptops as well as on both my HDs. I am confused about the best way to backup and sync my files on a regular BASIS. I have been using synctoy for a couple of years with my Panasonic laptop with XP. My new laptop with Windows 7 has a backup / restore function.

Anyway, I need a reliable / systematic way to sync my files. The files include lots of documents, pictures, music, and files that backup my address BOOK, favorites, and stuff like that. Can anyone suggest anything? This might work well for you if you take some time to get familiar with it: http://www.allwaysync.com/. I've used it some and have a favorable impression.

Solve : Error Message When trying to reinstall Adobe CS 3?

Answer»

Hello... I Have a PC with Microsoft XP Professional OS Version 2002 and Service Pack 3 (Maybe that's the problem). Anyway long story short when trying to reinstall Adobe CS 3 I get the error message: "I:\Adobe CS3\ Setup.exe" is not a valid Win32 application. Does anybody know how to fix this?Is CS-3 on a CD? If so the cd may not be clean. Clean the ed and try. Thanks but the CD is FINE its the error message that concerns me.Did you uninstall the software and now want to reinstall it? And you got the error?Harry: is it new software or have you had it on that machine before?

You may also be attempting to run a 64 bit application on a 32 bit platform. In a word yes. I bought this software new and the first time I installed it everything went fine. To make a long story short I'm now reinstalling it and get the error message.I'm not sure about the platform 32 or 64 bit, but it has been working fine on this same machine all along until now.Open notepad. Copy and paste this:

Windows REGISTRY Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe\shell\open\command]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile\shell\open\command]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]

and save it as a .reg file (make sure in notepad on the bottom it says "all files" and not just "text files" in the drop down menu). double click the file once it's saved. SEE if that works.

Other solutions that I would try would be to re-install java, and install ms vbm. You can also download a program called ccleaner and use the registry tool. Thanks I'll try it as soon as I can and get back to you as soon as I can. By the way Thanks to all who have answered my posting. I'm new to this and just TODAY noticed the Thank You option...Thanks OpenSource,

I tried your suggestion copying and pasting those comands to note pad and it didn't work. I have cleaned the C drive etc...Still wondering about the error message "I:\Adobe CS3\ Setup.exe" is not a valid Win32 application...

Solve : speed up Internet?

Answer»

Is it useful to use programs such as ( Ashampoo Internet Accelerator - Modem Booster .......) In order to speed up Internet
Or it is nonsenseNonsense.
Call your provider and see what Plans are available to you...

Most of them are nonsense, like Patio said. There are programs to help manage and speed up some downloads, like Free Download Manager, but programs that promise to speed up your internet are usually rubbish.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of internet connection do you have? It's not all nonsense, but be careful when deciding to use 'Internet Accelerator', some are fakes (specially P2P accelerators end up being trojans) and others can mess up the settings more (specially if you don't know what your doing and it doesn't have any backup). If you do use them, be sure to download from a trusted well-known company and the program that work with your specific operating system and network configuration. Some work fine, but be careful when picking. You also want to backup all original settings.

Consider making performance tweaks to your system manually rather than through use of a utility. This is advance tweaking, but gives you total control. Requires a bit of maths calculatulations (and a lot of registry locations to hack). However you'll understand clearly where the modifications were made and where they can be undone.

When tweaking the internet performance you want to first check...

What version of Windows or OS are you using?
Your router / DIALUP / cable / satelite, being used?
Your current net speed download, upload and ping to a server, etc?
Then go to your ISP and get advance settings from them if possible?
(important as this takes away a lot of the guess work and trail and error)

An online website or way of benchmarking each performance tweak test before and after - multiple times against the same server/ping) is required to ensure the tweak improved rather than just making it worst. Remember to reboot between tweaks to ensure the computer as set them and test them out!

Performance tweaks for low-speed (dialup) Internet focus mostly on improving download speed.

Broadband speed tweaks originally focused on INCREASING the performance of general Web surfing, speed tweaks are now more commonly made to tune specific applications like P2P file sharing systems and games.

The basic idea is to optimize net packets sizes, etc, to match those of your net speed, distance, LINE quality and ISP provider. This prevents most packet loss (therefore they don't have to resend the same data as much - you get it quicker), resizing packets to fit down the line (what your connection and ISP can handle at a time) and streamlines the connect to become smoother. You might get a 10-20% gain, depending on your connection and what your using it for. If broadband is capped - you won't be able to legally go over that cap but you can at least MAKE it smoother performance.

On top of that you can setup QOS (Quality of Service) on your Router, this will proiry applications/games and direct them to the computer using that app/game. This is best for networked (shared) boardband when online gaming and another user is surfing the web, checking EMAILS, etc.

The best performance boost isn't actually software, but checking your line for noise/static which would break down the signal. Cleaning the phone line, location of router, cables used/length, ensuring it's not affected by interference (specially if using wireless). If there is line noise / interference this can be the difference between slow/dropping net performance to high speed (100%-200% gain) with a clean connection.Azzaboi - you've been warned many times about cutting and pasting without posting an attribute to the original source. This will be MY last warning to you before an official warning is issued (which will result in all of your posts requiring moderator approval before being posted to the forum). Thanks for all the information
I thought that these programs are similar to viag...

We still don't do homework.Definiteness backup contains are all files that have changed since the last FULL backup and the advantage of a differential backup is that it shortens restore time COMPARED to a full backup or an incremental backup.

Now, here given below ADVANTAGES and Disadvantages: :

Advantages
1. Restore is faster than restoring from incremental backup
2. BACKING up is faster than a full backup
3. The storage space requirements are lower than for full backup

Disadvantages:
1. Restore is slower than restoring from full backup
2. Backing up is slower than incremental backup
3. The storage space requirements are higher than for incremental backup

Solve : Software Sell?

Answer»

Recently I have developed an educational software in VB.
Now I want to distribute it.
Please TELL me how can I approach the user and distribute my project to them.I have a bad feeling you're going a proprietary software route here with this, SINCE you're using VB. However, I recommend that you find a way to package the box nicely, and become a seller on Amazon.com.

If you want to make it open source, but make it LGPL so people don't mess with it as easy, you can publish it a lot of places, including SourceForge, Launchpad, BerilOS, or other places that I can't name right off hand.

Hope all this helps. Is it just me, or does this sound a bit like homework?Yepper...

But, all MODERN versions of windows- XP, Vista, 7- as WELL as many versions prior do. All Modern operating SYSTEMS have the capability built in.

Solve : OpenForm was Canceled?

I am TRYING to run a program on my computer called EquineMax ES. When I double-click the shortcut on the desktop I begins to open and then I get this error... The expression On Load you entered as the event property SETTING produced the following error:The OPENFORM action was canceled.
*The expression may not result in the name of a macro, name of a user-defined function, or [Event Procedure].
*There may have been an error evaluating the function, event, or macro.

Then when I click Show HELP it gives me this... This error occurs when an event has failed to run because Microsoft Office Access cannot evaluate the location of the logic for the event.

Any ideas how I can get this program to open? You do not explain how you created the short cut. The easiest and usually most reliable way is to from the "start" open all programs--select the one that you want to make the short cut to (ensuring that you have opened ALL the sub parts) then placing your cursor over the actual program line right click on it and select "create short cut". That will create an icon short cut to the program which you can then click on from your desktop. truenorthI tried this and it is still doing the same thing. I think the problem is after I begins opening.

Solve : no defrag?

Answer»

Well this is getting way off topic which is why I didn't go into it at first, but since your so curious to know why Windows Firewall is a security hole. There's a lot of hacker tricks out there to easily get around it, it doesn't protect all areas and sometimes just gives a FALSE sense of security. It's designed with the principle 'the firewall should keep out unsolicited traffic', so it's not a flaw as such just a hole.

For EXAMPLE:

Let's use Vista (since you love it) with the standard Microsoft firewall turned on and use a basic third-party FTP client.

Let's use a command line one and rename under Windows/System32 to be called FTP.exe

Now under the command line we'll use it to connect to any old ftp server, for example: ftp ftp.microsoft.com

After you see the "220" greeting message, enter ftp as the user - press enter.
Now you're PROMPTED for a password - enter anything and press enter.
Once you're logged on, enter dir - again, press enter.
You'll see the directory listing succeed, but you'll also see a warning that a connection is being blocked.

At the same time of telling you to block the connection, it allows it through, woah security hole?
What's more, even if you specify Keep Blocking, and then go issue another dir command, that one succeeds, bigger hole?

Let's go look at the Windows Advanced Firewall RULES for Inbound, and see if this sheds any light.

The first copy is set to block any listening ports opened but the second is fully open even if you tell it to be blocked. Deleting both sets of rules doesn't make a difference, it will keep doing it.

The FTP client knows that it needs to open a data connection.
To start the data connection, the FTP client binds to a port, and starts listening.
The firewall says "Oh no, an unknown program has started listening - better warn them that they won't get any traffic."
The FTP client checks what port it actually got, and sends a matching PORT command.
The connection INSPECTION engine says "PORT command? That's my cue!" and opens a hole in the firewall to incoming data connections.
Microsoft trusts itself and there's the hole - using it against itself.

Okay, apart from the obvious - that if a hacker could connect out to a server on port 21, nothing's stopping that hacker from transferring data in.

Finally, is this a vulnerability, a hole, or anything outside the correct operation of a firewall Microsoft should fix? No, because the firewall is documented as blocking unsolicited incoming connections - and by any reasonable definition, the data connection requested by a PORT command is solicited.

Source? How about Microsoft - Alun Jones ( Security MVP )

I suggest getting a third party firewall, which doesn't even trust itself.

As for so-called bad system cleaning applications? Advanced SystemCare it cleans privacy/cookies/junk files, adds an extra layer of security on your web-browser and OS, restricts known bad websites, dialers, etc, checks for hi-jacked settings, and removing basic spyware (yes okay it won't cover the anti-virus's job, neither does Microsoft Windows Defender for that matter and it's the same deal). I don't think it's half the bad application you make it out to be. I would suggest to use it manually though - it also scans registry, etc, but your got full control of that under the options. For a safety feature on the advance scannings it also backups and add a second boot, if the first ever fails you can recover instantly from the second.about more security in rural areas, in theory, it does not exist. In reality, you have very few hackers who would patrol around in cars to hack your -secured, but easy to break through... As to malware, of course it still exists but I don't think you are at risk for a personal attack. No one is specifically interested in nobodies living in the middle of nowhere. But yeah, everything can happen.
When you criticize the suites which pretend being able to fix every problem you may have, I am sure they are not perfect. But what would you use for a fast and easy result? for people who do not know enough about computers to fix them themselves without help? and for some of those "experts" who don't know much more? like some of the technicians at Staples, for instance.

Solve : disadvantages about open source software?

Answer»

Hello,
pls check my summary about disadvantages of open source software..Thank u all

1.Least competitive features
You may easily find popular backup software owns comprehensive features, such as backup& restore data, applications, settings and everything of whole PC, and support of popular operating system, and others. It means innovation is just what open source lacks.
2.Insufficient user experience
Three factors that lead software to success are feature, marketing, and public praise. Excellent software ALWAYS highlights user experience, especially UI, but less organization could pay attention to user experience for the open source.
3.Dependent technology
Current backup open source has its unique CHARACTER, such as the developer’s edition habit, and code selection. If there is no instruction from the developer, it is hard to public developers to understand it. Meanwhile, it also results in bad compatibility and less integration.
4.High maintenance cost
For repairing a bug, or changing some working process, you have to spend a lot of time to study many modules and modify many program interfaces.

You are way off, deep in the Wood`s You are completely wrong . VLC media player is open source and I challenge you to find a better media player that is not opensource and free. Opensource software is where it`s at, Firefox is open source and because of that look at all the tweaking you can do to it not to mention all the addons. You don`t see any of that with Opera or internet explorerHi,
open source is less simple to control as far as quality is CONCERNED. The potential of the software is completely in the hands of the users, meaning that development can either be very fast of very slow. Without careful planning, open source software can cause confusion, inconsistencies, and even compatibility problems. Users of open source software must be careful to avoid this type of confusion.

Thanks

Balderdash...
Wow, they're coming out of the woodwork today.I beg to differ.

Software, in my opinion, shared by thousands of other programmers and users globally, AGREE that software should be shared and therefore be free of charge if the software vendor wishes. The thought that all programmers could learn and share came from Homebrew and the start of computer experimentation and programming experiences. Rather than simply stating opinion, let's review facts that defend open source software:

Firstly, let's start with Firefox (this will be an entire essay here, but it should be accurate.).

- Firefox vs. IE

1) Security and Share Statistics: Firefox (or Fx), as of 2010, patched it's code six to seven times faster than when compared to IE. (See Wikipedia and other sources--this is not another Fx myth.) Microsoft (MS) states Explorer is "2.9 times better than Firefox in protecting against malicious malware." These statistics are simply not true for Firefox as a whole, as they were taken from a Windows-based computer; on a Linux-based PC, it is estimated to be much safer than IE. Secondly, IE was rated more secure for the newly implemented "SmartScreen Filter" which Firefox does not have. What the users are not told is that SmartScreen Filter is a unique feature that is an IE-only implementation--open source browsers have their own security implementations underneath the browsing experience, though they are not obvious to the end user.

2) Firefox has, as of 2010, climbed to a 30% market share. IE holds 49%, but Firefox will slowly catch up--therefore, while it is true Fx does not have as much of an advantage yet, it will. Fx supports HTML5 tags--on the current IE release, version 8, HTML5 support is in development. MS even states in their own "Compare" chart: "Firefox and Chrome have more support for emerging standards like HTML5 and CSS3, but Internet Explorer 8 supports standards commonly used by the websites you visit today." What, then, will happen to sites tomorrow? Fx 4 is already on its way, and though IE9 promises more standard support, Fx4 is also stepping ahead in improving browser functionality as well as of Beta 5.

Other Facts:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Windows employed Service Pack 1 to VISTA--the first batch caused computers to randomly reboot, causing a postponement in automatic deployment; in addition, Vista had (and this is an understatement to give Windows users the benefit of the doubt) 300 fixes within the deployed service packs. While it is undeniable that Linux is also updated mainstream, Linux is free software, while Windows is not--rather, for Vista Ultimate, on average, the end user purchases a copy for $350. Therefore, in conclusion, shouldn't software that relatively, in the case of an upgrade to Home Basic, that costs 100x at $100 more be developed properly, with their developers fully funded?

- Apache and MySQL are being rapidly adopted in the online world over proprietary standards for websites. 200,000 users are now using openOffice.org and variants (and this is simply from web surveys).

- Android, a Linux-based OS for smartphones, is estimated to have gained 17% market share; Symbian OS has gained 40% as of 2010. Combining these figures together in an 100% share would result in 57% of the mobile market. Before Palm was purchased by HP, it also used webOS, a Linux-based operating system.

- The world's top supercomputers, including the Cray, use a variant of the Linux operating system. It is easier for developers to run and maintain accurately, as the code is more secure and reliable. If bugs are found within the system, they can be fixed within hours of release.

- Open source operating systems, due to the fact they are "open" can be coded by any programmer to run on hardware ranging from a supercomputer to an iPod. Windows cannot be openly ported, though it does support ARM and other mobile architectures. As for software support to these ports in 2010, an estimated 32,209 software packages are available to the Linux user or programmer to install, compile, modify, or use. Windows far surpasses this, however, the rumor of no programs being available for open source systems is no longer the case. For all operating systems, an estimated 240,000 open source software projects are currently being hosted.

Opinion & Conclusion:
------------------------------------------------------------

Open source software is better, as you can change it *legally*, distribute it to anyone *legally*, and burn multiple copies of it at will *legally*. Proprietary software limits the media features (again, Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Home Premium--this is a fact), and where the software can be backed up legally, and how many copies you can have. Many users resort to piracy because they cannot afford new copies of software. Additionally, when more people see and work on the same project, more minds can see what they are working on and thereby fix it.

Therefore, with all these statistics, without arguing any further, as a programmer, or simply an end user, would you use proprietary products on your computer?

-- Andrew Greimann

There are no disadvantages to Open Source Software. I have been wondering for a while... Everyone has at least one version of windows, because it is included in any new computer you buy. But I have never seen or heard of anybody buying separate Windows software. I know of a lot of people who got illegal copies of whatever you want, from 98 to Vista - don't know anyone yet with 7 - with partitions sometimes (Vista and xp, plus Linux). But it seems like people don't want to pay for a new windows software. Open source seems great, I would think. Many individuals buy their own retail copies of Windows, for whatever reason. It has been an excitement started since Windows 95, that was brought back to surface with Windows Vista. Purchasers of the Ultimate edition stayed up hours for their copy, and these are simply two examples of Windows enthusiasts' excitement when new copies arrive (after all, they wait, on average, three years.) Even with open source OSes, I imagine everyone has their finger on the Download or Upgrade button the day of release.

However, yes, others do indeed wait to get a brand new computer with a brand new Windows copy, and others simply by one refurbished or used.

To me, however, Windows was great back in '95. Today, I'm not sure what the MS team is thinking... (namely, every release after XP, including Server 2008 R2). Use an open source OS--they're flat better--as you can customize the computer to your liking legally.Quote from: agreimann on October 15, 2010, 09:42:14 AM
Use an open source OS--they're flat better--as you can customize the computer to your liking legally.
I believe you're talking about customization that requires programming knowledge and most users do not have that. And, depending on what "customization" you're talking about, Windows users make various preference settings to their systems.

Some users buy Windows to upgrade from an older version of Windows. Other users may happen to obtain, or build, a computer with no OS and, therefore, need to purchase Windows if that's their choice of OS.

Solve : Poll: List OSes you know about or what *you* use!?

Answer»

Please take the time to vote for your OS of choice or one that you know about. Try to come close to the options as much as you can--these options most likely won't cover *every* computer user--feel free to comment if you use Haiku or another OS if you want to. This poll is being used as I'm thinking of working on a Linux distribution--and I'd want to know who would use it or who to best model it for.

And lastly, please no bashing anyone because they use a different OS, or anything like that. Thanks. Quote from: agreimann on October 09, 2010, 10:32:08 AM

I don't see how this poll COULD possibly be used "to know who would use it or who to best model it for."

And, besides, aren't there already enough Linux distros? If you want to get involved in the development of a Linux OS, why not join the other DEVELOPERS of a certain distro in a coordinated community effort? I believe that's how most of the Linux distros are developed.I apologize it took a while to reply back to you--I just let the poll KEEP going. Honestly, you have a good point here, however, what I mean by "who would use it or who to model it for" is how the operating system should look and act (e.g. if Windows is the primary OS that voters pick, then I'd have the UI behave like Windows and look somewhat like Windows.)

As for joining a Linux community, I have thought about and tried something like that... and I really would like to start a new one that I'd like to have portable apps run on.

Thanks for your input. It is truly appreciated--and I honestly will think about and take note of it.where can you learn enough about linux to be able to use it? and how long would it take?
I'm afraid of the apparent complexity of the process. Maybe if I knew a bit more... and I think a lot of people are like me.Quote

Solve : Microsoft Office 2007 Style Layout (Can you change it)??

Answer»

I just installed Microsoft Office 2007 with Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, Exel etc and the layout is really confusing. I'm using it on my XP 2003 and as I SAID, the layout SEEMS really confusing and too new to me.

Is there some way to revert the layout or theme back to that of the older versions, such as 2003 or before?

Thanks.BUMP.

Please tell me if it's even possible x.xI think you may have a difficult time getting an answer to this because Office 2007 is quite new and few people have experience with it yet. But, I can tell you this. I saw a short DEMO of it at a COMPUTER users's group and I have had a chance to use Excel 2007 a bit. And, I believe the answer to your question is no.

During the demo, one of the general points made by the presenter was the major difference in toolbars and menu structure between Office 2007 previous versions and how that made the switch to it more difficult than the change between earlier versions. I'm sure she would have told us about a way to revert the layout or theme back to that of the older versions if it could be done. One Place to Check

Thanks for your concern. I am a percussionist, and drums make a lot of noise... however I either dampen the kit (if I'm practicing) or wear ear plugs (if I'm doing a gig). I've never had my ears checked out because frankly, I don't think my hearing is sub-par. What is sub-par are 10 dollar headphones from K-mart, the reason I don't SPEND MUCH money on headphones is because I'm not picky about quality of sound. Volume is not that big an issue, I'm actually more interested if a program exists over anything else. I can hear THINGS just fine, I speak to team-mates on CS and hear them fine, I can listen to music fine. However, sometimes I like to crank it up... which is impossible because the max volume is (on this particular set of headphones) the mediocre volume.

It's not that the headphones are faulty, they achieve a good volume... however, the good volume is at max volume and as I said I like to crank it up sometimes. The soundcard's not faulty. Surely you know that some headphones are DEAFENING when you have it set at 1/4 max volume, and some headphones are mediocre at max volume? I can't be the only one who experiences this.Quote

My friend said he is a 'bad hacker' because he supposedly SET up a remote control with his friend with a progrm called CRY.
I then asked him if he knew what the term 'hacker'meant and...WELL....lets just say he got it WRONG.
I googled the program 'CRY' but I couldn't find anything but health organisations.
Does anyone know of such program?? And no i don't want that program myself. I have no purpose of it and i just want to prove my friend wrong

Thanks for any help.program could be FAR CRY,

hacking is not as easy as some people would like to think, but getting caught hacking is very easy, costly and dangerous.
Yeah, i watched the movie 'Hackers' and getting caught is so scary...OK, let's drop this.
Hacking is not messing up some guy's computer, try looking the WORD up before you use it.
If you want to find out what program it was, ask the guy who did it.
uesquebeathus, Far Cry is a game, not a remote control program.I know what hacker MEANS but my friend doesn't and yeah, far cry isn't a game. He just told me the program was called 'CRY' and now he's on vacation so no way to contact him......its our easter holiday now.....

There are no items in the "start"-menu or keys in the registry. "Uninstallation" of BlackLight simply means deleting the file. Location of the file is dependant on how you downloaded the file and which browser you used. Solve : How to create a new DVD from an old ??

Answer»

Dear friends,

this is my question: I have 3-4 old DVD and I want to use only some parts of them to create a new DVD. Maybe it SEEMS easy for you but I am not so able with the PC.

My OS is Win XP SP 2.
I have the following programs on my computer:
SoftPepper Video converter (to convert the old DVD files in a FORMAT that I can manage for ex. ".avi"),
Windows Movie Maker ( to work with the .avi files , cut, add, copy, paste and so on ),
Deep Burner to burn the final DVD when I have finished.
Is it CORRECT ?
Can you ,please, help me and suggest all the procedure step-by-step?

Thank you in advance and best regards.

BenedettoI don't think I understand what you are trying to do. Are you trying to write on a part of a used disc?
If that is what you are trying to do, I highly doubt it is possible because if you burn on the outside half of the disc and have old data on the inner half, usually all dvd players start reading the inner half. You will need to teach the burner and reader to read and write completly oppisite.two softwares you will need and they are free to download: Dvd Shrink 3.2 and decrypter43 (something like that, I found Anydvd is a simple and very good alternative)

Decrypter program used to break the copyright code if your old dvds are protected. This program normally runs in the background.

use "reauthor" mode in Dvd Shrink to choose "chapter" or "title" that you want to copy. You need to play with it to get used to it. SAVE all the parts that you want to keep onto your main hard drive. After you've done this, close and reopen dvd shrink again and use "reauthor" mode to add all the parts that you have coppied earlier to make a new dvd. Good luck! Play around with dvd Shrink it's a cool and free program OK, thank you, I found DVD Shrink 3.2 and it works very good.
It was just what I was trying to do.

Best regards

Benedetto

The folders have been removed and registry repair utilities report that errors have been repaired, yet when trying to reinstall Acrobat reports that I have a functional copy of the software installed and aborts.

Help!!!!See if this helps...
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=320310I read that FAQ and followed it without success. When I went to the tree there were no folders for Adobe, either under Program Files or Application Data. I dropped to the cmd level and looked at the directories and Adobe isn't there.

Following that, I used the code that was generated when I attempted the install and searched the registry.

Did you try all the suggestions at the Adobe site including using the Microsoft cleanup utility?
PERHAPS you will need to talk to Adobe about this.PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!!!

Here is the key. I've pasted the text of the display from the Windows Cleanup utility, before and after. When I first ran the util. there was NO indication that ANYTHING Adobe lived on my computer. On the LATEST run I took a chance that the first line was the clue. The version of Acrobat that I had previously run was version..."7.0.8". I closed my eyes and hit delete, rebooted and successfully installed version 7.0.9. My next STEP was to just forget it and say FoxIt!!

(All Users) [7.0.8]
(All Users) ANTS Loan CALCULATOR [1.0.2]
(All Users) Apple Software Update [1.0.2.1]

(All Users) Adobe Reader 7.0.9 [7.0.9]
(All Users) ANTS Loan Calculator [1.0.2]
(All Users) Apple Software Update [1.0.2.1]
Great work and you just reminded me of a Foxit update last week so I'd BETTER go and get it.

Solve : Paint , What went wrong??

Answer»

My system is a little sluggish, and I know its time to do some malware and virus scanning, and or plian old, same old., . .But, I would like to solve a dilema that is starting to get my attention.

I have noticed, that when I have a box or program on the desk top and
I minimize it, . . that besides sometimes being a little slow to react it
leaves behing a blank image, a space VOID of any image that was behind it weather a program or icons on the desk top.

I know that this must be sign of something ?

On top of that I have taken a screen shot of a systems notification
that was rahter long, (horizantally), compared to others but thin,
it tuned out that when I pasted ion paint, . .a very small part of it pasted, what went wrong?

This is probably caused by junk in the background slowing down your computer. This may or may not be caused by malware. Your post doesn't make it clear whether you have ran scans yet or not. What protection are you using? What other programs do you have RUNNING? Remember to look in the bottom right task bar and see what's there. And press control + alt + delete and list for us the processes that use the most memory or CPU when this happens.Niel,

I have checked the BR Taskbar and found a printer scan on, . .I also have a UPDATE waiting to be loaded, it is the SP2 D/L, but I am still undecided to D/L it, I have other issues and may install from disc. Should this be considered a generic and can be replaced any time ?

It bothers me that it says Windows, and you accept license etc. but does not give you the confidence to believ it.

Yeah, my Prevx 1 just expired and I have not used anything to scan for awhile, other than AOL's Spy Zapper, and there Computer check hoo-jiggy,

but thanks much for the wake up .

This is going to be my new Avatar, but I want it to be much bigger !

Keep in mind avatars are limited to 65x65 pixels. And generally, the file size need not be more than 5KB to 6KB at most; in FACT, the file size can usually be a good bit smaller.soybean,

Just joking but now that you mention it

I should know this, but, BTW, what did happen to the other Avatars ? I'll check the profile page.

What other avatars?

Solve : Please, accidentally deleted M.Office. Is it retrievable???

Answer»

Didn't know that would remove Microsoft word... Am I screwed?? Or is there hope of retrieving it and all my documents from my Compac Presario Laptop and if there is hope HOW do I retrieve the DELETED program and all my microsoft word documents. PLEASE. Whitney If you can help I would be forever grateful. Thanks, Whit-

Edited by Dilbert. Reason: Your phone number is not necessary. POSTING it on a public forum is asking for phone calls you don't want. For your protection I removed it.Deleting MS Office would not normally delete your documents, unless you had ACTUALLY saved them in the same folder as the Office program files (unlikely). SIMPLY re-install office and all will be well.

If you do not own a copy of Office or cannot legitimately re-install, then consider using the free MS Office alternative, >OpenOffice.org<, which can open MS Office documents.

Solve : Reinstall Windows 98SE?

Answer»

I have an older P-4 1.8G with 256mb & a 40G HD running Windows 98SE. Because of ONGOING problems, I need to reformat the HD & reinstall Windows 98SE. I will not upgrade this computer to Windows XP. My only concern is that, as of the summer of 2006, Microsoft no longer supports this operating system. Before I begin, I need to know if the patches for Windows 98 up to summer 2006 are still available for download.Check here...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/support/default.asp

Alan <>< Just in case you didnt already know:

If you are going to do a complete reformat, then I suggest this:
Make sure you have a good BOOTDISK, you will need it

www.bootdisk.com with the Windows 98 boot disk will be fine. The CD ROM DRIVE will be loaded as the R: drive

Once you get the disk working, and you restart your computer, do the format, and then use the boot disk to INSTALL 98SE with R:\setup.exe

But thats only if you dont have a special System Restore CD

Solve : PICTURE HOLDER?

Answer»

I am looking for a portable picture holder that I can take with me when I go to Scotland on holiday. I have about 2500 pictures and I want to be able to download them on to a portable device and be able to plug into computers wherever I go. Does such a beat exist/A flash drive would do the trick. You can get a GB (1,024 MB) for about $20 USD these days. Either that, or a half-dozen CD's.You could also open a Photobucket or Flikr account (or both) and upload all your photos...you can then access them anywhere in the World you have web access except maybe China...Thanks GUYS for your help. I have thumb drives and external hard drives but I was hoping that there was a stand alone,battery/electric VIEWER that I could take with me as some of my friends do not have a computer.
auldmacYes, they are available.
You can plug your memory card in, and view the pictures on a screen integrated into the device, which will run on batteries.
However, these are pretty expensive for what they are.
Whereabouts are you in the world? If you have a DVD Burner, and a blank DVD, you should be able to put them on the DVD, and it should work with some DVD players, but its not guarinteed to work on all of them. Different region codes may cause problems.
