Solve : Windows Media Player 11.0?

Answer»

Normally I use the VLC Mediaplayer, but hey so many people were BRAGGING about this new musicbox, so I said, ok LET's try

But...in the VLC I could click on: import directory or import folder and play a whole album....on WMP I cant seem to find that option...but maybe I'm too green...lol...and maybe I rather go back to VLC?
Anybody with some ok opinions...lol....? I just wanna play a whole album and dont wanna make medialibraries.... You mean VLC...

In WMP highlight the first selection then hold down SHIFT and down arrow to grab all the choices and select Play.Highlight the first selection?? I dont have selections, just the first option, which is Play Now.....there is no music/musicfiles visible in any way on the screen!!

By the way: when I rightclick on musicfolders, some of them say Play in WMP/add to playlist and some dont....same formats MP3....??If you are in a folder with multiple types of files you will still get the Play All on the left side. But if you select the songs you want, then that option will change to Play Selection. In your case I assume you have a folder with songs only, lets say mp3, then you can just click Play All and it will add all the playable files into Playing Now area.

Since this topic is about windows media I might as well ask a question. I have 5.1 speakers and headphones, whenever I switch from speakers to headphones in the control panel Audio settings, everything playable SOUND goes through headphones except Windows Media Player 11, for some reason it doesn't affect it, I was WONDERING if there is an option there to choose where to play the sound.look at my new question: XP with Alzheimer?...lol

Solve : Mysterious space loss?

Answer»

Hi, my name's Ian, and I'm completely stupid when it comes to computers.

That said, I'm running Window's XP Home, version 2002, Service Pack 2, on a Dell Dimension something or other. 2.19 GHz, 632 MB of RAM.

In theory, I should be able to fit just over 37 gigs of stuff on here, And for the life and soul of me I can't seem to account for more'n ten or twelve, even fifteen. I actually can't acount for more than four, but I'm guessing there's at least double or triple that hiding in corners where my dumb eyes can't SEE it. But, when I run my defragmenter, it tells me I've only got 4 and a half gigs of free space left.

I can't seem to think of anything else I can take off the COMPUTER didn't come with, outside of AIM and iTunes (Which only has about three gigs of stuff on it), is there somewhere else I should be looking for trash-worthy files? For the love of god, someone help me out.HookahShawn ...... Well let's start with the obvious sting first.
d/l CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ ..... Do not install the yahoo toolbar. Once you have it installed, run the cleaner part ...the brush icon ....
remove all it finds ........( it will not remove any required items)

Report back with the free space after running ccleaner.

How does My Computer report the used and free space when you right click the drive and select properties ? ?Okay, I ran ccleaner, and I'm up to 16% free, but that's still only 6 free gigs. As near as I can figure, I should have at least fifteen. Where do I go looking next? It's all those porn sites what do it.do you use any p2p sharing? Do you use iTunes? Programs like these make copies of the same thing. The last sentence you wrote LOL try searching "all" pics and "all" Videos. sometimes your computer makes more than 2 copies. Try deleting you temp internet files if you use Internet Explorer. When you do all of this get back to meQuote from: patio on May 10, 2007, 07:34:50 AM

How does My Computer report the used and free space when you right click the drive and select properties ? ?
I haven't used any P2P in two years or so, and I use iTunes... and I just did a search for all my pictures, music and videos, and it produced a list of four or five instances of my My Pictures FOLDER and two of my iTunes folder, but they both showed the same computer address, and I couldn't actually find any doubles when I explored the folders it pointed me to. *censored* ftw?

Also, I clean out my internet temp files automatically each time I exit firefox, but I just did it manually just to check. No noticeable difference. You probably won't be able to delete all but atleast some or most of the files from here which take up a huge amount of space. If you go to control panel, folder options, view tab, check Show hidden files and folders, then go primary drive>documents and settings>user>Local Settings>Temp - first just check how much space does it take up and report back with the results.Quote from: patio on May 11, 2007, 07:43:46 PM

Solve : Photoshop GIF images?? HELP Please.?

Answer»

Hello.

I have just recently created a moving GIF image for a siggy.
It all is well when creating and all, but once I GTE to saving it goes through the images in seconds and you can barely see or read what is there.

Would someboyd be able to help me.
I have looked into everyhting at Photoshop and do not know how to slow it down. I have put a time setting on the annimation frames to what I thought best, but no matter is it's 5 seconds or 60 seconds, it still runs through at the same speed when going to save.
Does anyone know a way of slowing this down and getting it to the actual speed I am wanting?? ??TRY looking here:

http://www.planetphotoshop.com/

Alan <>< Download Microsoft GIF Animator and give that a try. It's freeware.Quote from: soybean on April 30, 2007, 11:39:12 AM

Download Microsoft GIF Animator and give that a try. It's freeware.

I really hate to hijack this thread (I'll do my best to not let that happen), but I downloaded this program out of curiosity and when I try to install it, it fails because it's looking for MSE11E.tmp\setup.exe in my Temp folder, but the file doesn't exist (why would it?). Anybody else having this problem?Um...NEVERMIND...it managed to work itself out. Odd.

Anyway, thanks for the link, soybean. It's not as good as something like Animation Shop Pro (not free), but it's always nice to have a secondary program handy.for a really simple animation program, GO for UnFreeZ. it's tiny and fast and WORKS, but is limited by a few things, like you can only have one slide speed for all frames.Photoshop is good for creating the images, but ImageReady is what you want to use to set up the animation (if you are doing this with Adobe tools).

Solve : Can't burn anything to DVD?

Answer»

I am a bit in dispare. I can't burn anything to DVD. When I try to burn to DVD the following error message appears...

"unable to create the file 'filename'
File system error (16389)"

I am however able to write FILES to a normal CD but NOT to a DVD.

I have already tried the following...

-Windows system restore - did nothing.
-Non destructive system recovery - restores windows and drivers - did nothing.
-Full destructive system recovery (formatted harddrive and recovered computer back to original factory condition - I backed up my files before hand!) - did nothing and the problem still exists!!

In device mananger my DVD device is listed as 'TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532U' I can't seem to be able to find a NEWER driver anywhere.

I don't know if this is the cause of the problem but I recently installed a video editing software called ImageMixer ver.2.0 (by Pixela Corporation) - after the software installed a message came up saying...

"In order to use the ImageMixer CD writing function, WinASPI needs to be installed. However likewise if the writing software that is already in the computer stops functioning, please reinstall the original WinASP. Also, ImageMixer CD writing software might not function properly is a different WinASPI other then the bundled one is used."

I guess this appears to be the obvious cause of the problem but I have not written anything to DVD for ages before hand so don't know 100% if the problem existed before hand althogh the message would suggest that is the cause of the problem. The first time I got the ImageMixer message above I clicked cancel and did not install WINASPI and I then noticed I could not write to DVD. I then installed it to see if the problem would disappear with the new WinASPI installed and the problem was still there. I uninstalled both Image mixer and the MicroStaff WINASPI (thats what is was called in program files) off the laptop BEFORE I did a system recovery but the problem still persisted. Since doing a full destructive system recovery I have not installed Image Mixer back on (won't touch it again!) and the problem still exists.

I would be grateful if anyone has come across this problem and they knwo how to resolve it if they could kindly give me a solution. I am thinking of taking my laptop to a computer SHOP so they can fix it but thought I might be able to get some free advice hereif there is a simple solution. I tried googling the error message and got a few hits so I am not the first but couldn't some across any solutions.
I am trying to use the microsoft email support (2 free attempts then £40 a GO!!) and I get to the bit below (attached) where it asks for a product identification number and not knowing what this is, when I click the 'how to find your product identification number' link a blank page appears saying 'you are not authorised to view this page' Very helpful!! Does anyone know what the identification number is if you've used that service before - or prehaps you could try clicking the link and post what is says.

Thanks

Solve : How can I scan pictures onto my computer without the white boarder??

Answer»

I want to scan some pictures of mine onto the computer but I hate doing it because they always come out looking kinda funny because of the white boarder. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of the white boarder easily?

-Melissa-I suspect the solution lies in settings in your scanner software. So, what software are you using? Also, what make and model scanner do you have?

When you view the photos after scanning, what software are you using to view them with, that shows the white BORDER? Can you view these photos with software, EVEN Paint? Does the white border appear the same in other software? Most scanning programs will allow you to preview your scan first. Give this a try and SEE if it will let you select the scanning area, which will allow you to scan only the picture and not the empty white space. If it doesn't have this feature, then you need to look for the cropping tool. Also, a "boarder" is a person who lives in your house and pays rent to your MOM. A "border" is an edge around something like a picture.
I thought a "boarder" was someone who likes surfing....

The easist solution would be to save the scans as is and then use an image editing program such as Irfanview to crop them as needed...

Windows XP Home does not INCLUDE GPEDIT; XP Home users can apparently run this program if they have access to files from an XP PRO (or possibly Win 2000?) installation, by doing the following:

* Copy the files gpedit.dll and fde.dll from \WINDOWS\System32 on the XP Pro machine to \WINDOWS\System32 on the XP Home machine.
* From a command prompt ISSUE the following commands on the XP Home machine: regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\gpedit.dll

* regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\fde.dll Open the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) and select File->Add/Remove Snap-in... Then click Add. Select the Group Policy snap-in from the list of installed snap ins.

Solve : Problems With Toshiba RAID?

Answer»

I just bought a Toshiba Qosmio. I decided to use the RAID program that came with it, I mirrored the Main harddrive with a 60gig harddrive. When the RAID was finished, my 60gig hard drive wouldn't show up on my computer. Could anybody tell me how to disable the raid and get my 60 gig harddrive to show back up on My Computer?Hmmm, you've got me wondering. How can you setup RAID on a notebook computer? Doesn't RAID always involve multiple hard drives? Do you have multiple hard drives in that notebook computer? Thanks for the reply. This is what both of my harddrives are labeled as:

TOSHIBA RAID LD0 SCSI Disk Device
TOSHIBA RAID LD1 SCSI Disk Device

I have (2) 60 gig harddrives. Toshiba Qosmio's come with 2 harddrives. The first hard drive (RAID 0) had about 15 gigs used on it. (RAID 1) had 60 gigs free. After RAID 1 was through mirroring RAID 0. My second harddrive (RAID 1) just disapeared. I have gone through device manager to see if the 2nd harddrive (RAID 1) some how got uninstalled. The 2nd harddrive is still installed I have tried to roll back the 2nd harddrive (RAID 1) but there was no success. I have DISABLED, uninstalled, reinstalled, and enabled the 2nd harddrive (RAID 1) . The 2nd harddrive (RAID 1) still doesn't show up on "My Computer" but it shows up on on Device Manager as WORKING with no problemsExactly what model computer do you have? Can you cite a source showing the specs on it? I looked at Toshiba Qosmio G15-AV501 and it has one hard drive. TOSHIBA Qosmio G25-AV513 NoteBook

Solve : Start-up, running processes clean up.?

Answer»

Cool. If I choose I'll just REMOVE the desktop icon and leave it be. Actually, you can "remove" it by going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components (the button on the left side of the Add or Remove Programs panel), and unchecking the box for Internet Explorer. This just removes it from the Start menu and Desktop. That's why that panel SHOWS 0.0MB as the CHANGE in hard drive SPACE. It's not really REMOVING any program files.

Solve : Zip Files - maybe?

Answer»

I have a friend in another state, that for a few years, I have exchanged e-mails with once or twice a week , from my home to her workplace. I run Windows XP Pro. In the last few weeks she has been unable to answer any of my mail, either by hitting the 'Reply' button or directly. She gets all my mail, but can't return anything. She politely inquired to her comapny and was told that they block all OUTGOING Zip Files. Does that have anything to do with REGULAR, text only e-mails.? I am on Yahoo. I can reach her directly THRU her company SITE address. Not sure how Zip Files are used. Would this be the problem. ? She has no trouble sending "intermediaries", who pass it along, . . . . . so have they just blocked MY address for outgoing. They didn't say they did that, or not. If they did, I think they would have confronted her with it, and explained why . . as a warning. (?)Zip files are archived files and aren't sent along with standard E-mails unless you include them on purpose.

As to the reason why the E-mail doesn't arrive? We can't tell with this information we'd have to know:

1. If she gets an error-receipt when she sends you an E-mail
2. If you have a spam filter that blocks the company address she works for.
3. Does she sent in plain text or HTML?

Solve : Missing system tray/Notification area icons? A tip ....?

Answer»

Hi

I don't KNOW if this is the correct LOCATION for a "tip" but, if not, I'll LEAVE it to a mod. to move it.

I see people often complain that icons in their "SYSTRAY" or "notification area" disappear. Sometimes they're present .... sometimes not. Generally unstable.

Well, this little free program may be the answer. TrayIconsOK! a program that checks all icons you have set for the systray will appear on boot up .....

http://www.download.com/TrayIconsOK-/3000-2086_4-10636313.html

Try it and LET us know if it works for you.

OJI try to have as few systray icons as possible, but thanks for the link, oddjob. That could be pretty handy.

Solve : XML log files trouble?

Answer»

Hi all! I am currently having a bit of trouble opening a log file of a MSN Live Messenger chat. This is not a log file generated by MSGPlus, but one generated by MSN in the .XML log file format. Normally (as far as I am aware), these open for viewing with internet explorer. But alas, it will not open with internet explorer, nor with Firefox, Microsoft XML convertor, or EXCEL. It will open with notepad, but in a coded manner, which I can't be bothered sorting through FIVE lines to get say two WORDS out, eg:

yohey!

All that for two sentences of one WORD each. Does anyone know how to FIX this or a good program that will open it? My IE version is the latest, Excel is from office XP, firefox is also the latest, and I'm running a legit. XP SP 2. Thanks guys.

Solve : mp3 playable at itunes but invalid format for windows media player??

Answer»

I am a Mac + PC user. I transfered some mp3 from my mac into my pc. They are still in mp3 format but everytime when I tried to play it by windows media player, I get the error message about invalid format or the format is not playable.

so i DECIDED to INSTALL itunes for windows as well and it plays fine with itunes.. so everytime when I transfer music from mac to PC, I need to use a music converter to convert the mp3 in order to play properly.

Any way to work it around? Is that the encoding or format problems?
thanks Perhaps it has to do with Digital Rights Management or something SIMILAR. You know how stuck up Steve Jobs is on making sure you can only play music on his DEVICES. Nothing from a Mac will work on a Windows BOX and vice-versa without some type of file conversion program...they are 2 different OS's.

Solve : Excel Help for sums..?

Answer»

First let me STAT that I am a true novice at Excel. With that in mind, my question might be quite simple to ANSWER. I am working on a program to keep stats for a baseball team. I have one page where the Year to Date stats will appear. Then I have a page for each game (60 GAMES). What I would like is the YTD to tally each game. I can manually enter the formula such as ='1'!B4+'2'!B4+'3'!B4+'4'!B4+'5'!B4+'6'!B4+'7'!B4+'8'!B4 to add the games for the person on the 4th row through the first 8 games. My question, is there a simple SUM forumula I can add without typing each and every 60 games for each and every player?? Hope this isn't too confusing..
Thanks for any help..
Tim
I just did a test with Excel 2003. I opened a new Excel file (containing 3 sheets by default) and added 3 more sheets. I did not change the sheet names, so they are Sheet1 through Sheet6.

In cell A1 in Sheet1 through Sheet5, I entered a 5. Then, in Sheet6, cell A1, I entered =SUM(Sheet1:Sheet5!A1). This created the desired result in Sheet6, cell A1, which is the sum of the cell A1 in Sheet1 through Sheet5, or 25 (5x5).

I then WENT to cell A2 in Sheet1 through Sheet5 and entered 6. So, I need to add the formula in Sheet6, cell A2 to display the result, which would be 30. To do this, I merely copy the formula in Sheet6, cell A1 to Sheet6, cell A2. Excel updates the formula to =SUM(Sheet1:Sheet5!A2).

This should make your task much easier. Let me know if you have any problem creating your formulas or if you have further questions about the procedure. Thanks for the help.. I've almost got it now. If you don't mind, can you tell me the SUM formula you would use for the following spreadsheet.

I want sheet 1 to be the total of all sheets say 1-5. In column A Row 1 will be the names of the player, thus no data. But column B would count games. So if I add 1 game to sheet 2, column B row 1 for this player, and do this for sheet 3, 4, 5, I would want Sheet 1 to total 4 games.

Thanks again for your help!!
TimIf I understand you correctly, the formula would be basically the same as the ONES in my first post. In B1 of Sheet1, you would have =SUM(Sheet2:Sheet5!B1)

What makes you think Java is the culprit & making your system run slow?

Run antivirus and antispyware tests lately?

Alan <>< Alan makes a good suggestion; you may want to scan your computer for viruses. But yes, you can delete those older updates. Better yet, you may want to install 6.0 and get rid of 5.0 altogether.I have 2 forms of spyware protection, Mcafee and AOL Spyware. I run Mcafee Scans twice a week and AOL scans everyday (Mcafee takes much longer).

And I don't think Java is the culprit, but it is taking up a lot of space on a very SMALL, very old hard drive. All I was asking is if I could delete the old updates.
That's the only protection you have? No firewall? You may want to consider replacing McAfee with AVG Free. It doesn't take up as many resources or space. Also look into Ad-Aware. CCleaner is your friend too.Just curious, slafa23, how big is your hard drive and how much free space do you have?

And, do get a firewall.A small older HDD won't get any quicker....with or without Java.I'm sorry. I left out the firewall. It's all part of Macafee.

Also, this is a very old computer. It has a 20GB hard drive. It is a 7-12 year old Gateway. 10.5 is used, 8.6 is free. However, the computer still runs slowly.

Also, is CCleaner an adware/spyware protection? Or will it help clean the hard drive?

Thanks again.

Getting rid of unneeded programs will speed up the computer a little bit.Yep, you have an old machine there. Can't you be more precise on the AGE? "7-12 year" is a huge range, as far as computers go.

As CBMatt said, McAfee is heavy on resource demands. I think it's a bad choice for that older system. You might try Sygate Personal Firewall, and AVG, as CBMatt mentioned.

CCleaner is not adware/spyware protection; it's a hard drive cleaner and registry cleaner. It can free up some hard drive space and make your system run better. So, do you have SecuritySuite, then? It's a PRETTY decent program (I use it), but I would still get AVG Free, though, as it takes up fewer resources.

As for CCleaner...it is, as the full name implies, a crap cleaner. It will clean out your temp and Temporary Internet Files, as well as other JUNK. Keep in mind that freeing up space will only be a small improvement. More RAM and/or a better CPU would help you out a bit more, but I think you would be better off investing in a new computer. You're lucky that old thing is EVEN running anymore.

EDIT: Looks like soybean pretty covered it already. Heh.It's more like 10 years old. It is an old Gateway. I got it from a friend who was throwing it out becuase it was full of viruses and adware and stuff. So I wiped it and now it's running well. It's just slow. Which can be expected from such an old computer. However I am just trying to clean it up to make it run better.

I also have a 180 GB external harddrive. So I keep all of my files on there and trying to clean off my 20GB C: Drive.Quote from: slafa23 on April 28, 2007, 12:25:12 PM
So I wiped it and now it's running well. It's just slow. Which can be expected from such an old computer. However I am just trying to clean it up to make it run better.

Seems to be a contradiction here. I presume, by "wiped it", you mean you formatted the hard drive and freshly installed Windows. So, that would be clean state; no further cleaning would be necessary. However, if you used some Recovery CD that had other stuff on it besides Windows, you may have some software installed that could be removed. And, yes, you may benefit from running CCleaner.

What OS are you running? How much memory do you have? If you have 32MB or less and you're running Win 98/98SE, you'll get much better performance by adding memory. 64MB would be big improvement; 128MB would be even better. But, before you buy larger memory modules, you'd better verify the largest size memory module and maximum memory that computer can handle. I have a Packard Bell Pentium dating back to Oct 1995 that has 128MB and runs Win 98SE. At 128MB, it's maxed out. I wiped it 2 years ago when I got it. I was just showing how old it was. In the years I've added crap I don't need, thus I am deleting it.
I am running XP. I have 320 MB of RAM , 447MHz.

Solve : Recover files after system restore?????

Answer»

My Windows XP had a very strange glitch happen the other day where I went to click on an icon on my desktop to open a program and all of a SUDDEN everything on my desktop disappeared accept my recycle bin, my documents folder and the my computer icon and also my wallpaper picture was gone. I clicked on my start BUTTON and went into the all programs area
to find that all the program folders were there but they were all mysteriously empty! So the next thing I do was I restarted the computer only to find that nothing had changed at all. So I quickly did a system restore back to the day before only to find that I was missing alot of word documents I had created over the last few WEEKS had not been restored and all of my Thunderbird emails were completely gone!! So before I paniced I RAN a few File Recovery programs like: GetDataBack NTFS, O&O DiskRecovery, Active FileRecovery 7.1 & many more using the UBCD only to find that every one of these programs would not recover anything before the system restore! They all would find the same files that had already been restored with the system restore nothing before!!
What the heck happened to my files that I know I had before the restore???
Where are they on my hard DRIVE and what program if any will find them for me?
I REALLY would like some help here if possible!

Thanks,

Robqx4Is system restore really that horrible?

Try PC File Inspector to get your files back. System restore does not touch data files...those files must have been damaged/moved or removed prior to this...And yet another testimony that a hard drive is a poor choice for the only location of important data files.

Solve : Using Ghost to copy a Drive?

Answer»

I want to copy my entire C drive to a new drive using Ghost. Do I have to make the new Drive G the Booting drive or can I leave it at C. I know there is an option for making the new drive the primary but I don't want to do it if I am forced to make the new drive the boot drive. Am I clear? If you have any ideas on this let me know.Windows is only capable of booting from C:, I don't know what will happen if you ghost C: to G: and then reformat C:, I THINK you will destroy the MBR and you will no longer be able to enter Windows.

You can, however, create a dual boot by ghosting to G:, editing the boot.ini and still use C:.. No you're not clear...what do you want to accomplish here ? ?I guess my ultimate GOAL is to have two bootable disk, one with XP and on with VISTA or linux. I do not want to reformat my C just copy it but still keep it as the main boot drive. A Ghost image is an exact replica of your C: drive. If you use it to clone another physical HDD then you will be able to boot it by setting the drive order in the BIOS.
This will NOT work on another partition on the same HDD as you can only have one active partition on each physical drive.

So yes it can be done.

As to dual-booting that is another issue.
This CAN be done on another partition as long as the older OS is installed first. For example if you are currently running XP and you want Vista also just create a partition for Vista and boot up with the Vista CD. When it asks where to install to point it to the partition/drive you selected.

When you are finished every time you start the machine you will be prompted for which OS you want to run...in this case XP or Vista.

You will also jave to install any programs you want to run inside of Vista . Although there are exceptions this is the best way for them to run properly.

Let us know what you decide and we can advise further...Thanks, I will make a decison when I get home in a few days and post as to if all went well.

Solve : Acronis True Image seems slow?

Answer»

Hello all.
I have Acronis True Image 7, I got it free with a magazine or something. I assure you it's perfectly legitimate anyway.
Anyway, I came to use it and first made a disk to boot from and run the program, as it wouldn't image the disk without doing this.
And it worked fine that first time.
Then I came to make another backup a few weeks later, which failed.
I then ran chkdsk, which found no errors.
I also formatted the external drive I was backing up to (250Gb Freecom external USB2.0 drive, NTFS, about 6 months old).
I TRIED again the other day, and it was extremely slow.
The estimated time was 21 hours, I went to school and left it running and when I got back, about 8 hours later, it had 8 hours to go.
This seemed extremely slow to me.
Is this normal?
I have a 100Gb drive, with aprox. 55Gb of data to back up.
I use either normal or minimal compression, they each said 1 hour 50 minutes estimated time to back up last time I used it (the 21 hour time).
If this is not normal, can anyone suggest why it would be so slow?
And how I can speed it up?
Any more info NEEDED can be supplied.

Another question, if I MAY - is it worth upgrading to True Image 10 for £23 or so?
Does it add ANYTHING worthwhile?
And would it be faster, could the old version be the problem?

Thanks in advance for replying to either of these questions.
Calum.
P.S. if I don't reply before 6:50pm GMT, I won't reply until sometime Sunday, I'm out all weekend.I use version 9.x and it takes about 4 minutes to image a drive with a fresh install of XP and Office. I don't know about 10 as I have not used it (no need) but it is really inexpensive at www.newegg.com When you make an image you should always verify it. If it passes the verify, you will have no problems with it. Yes, I did verify the first backup, the second was not completed and the third I cancelled because I needed the PC, and 8 hours would have been a very long time to wait.
4 minutes seems very fast even for saying have much more data, do you think maybe that the bootable True Image disk is messed up or something?
I think I'll get v10 anyway, it's my birthday soon so I'll have some cash on the way to buy it.
Unless, of course, I discover why v7 is so slow and remedy it.7 may have had issues with XP. I'm not sure. Version 9 was the best software purchase I had made for quite some time.Quote

Yes, cover in before the anti-file sharing committee gets a hold of you! They're lurking around here..

I got Acronis ... Something on a CD as well with a magazine, I think I should go and give it a shot. Did you by chance choose a custom file size for the image ? ?

No, I didn't.

Thanks for the replies, as it's my birthday on Thursday I may as well just order v10, seems to be v7 that is the problem.
It's not expensive anyway, and it should do a BETTER job.

Solve : Photoshop Beginner Help?

Answer»

I took a picture of a building, and since it is tall, it leans back in the photo. I want to straighten the building, so that it is not leaning back. What do you call this and how do I do that? Thanks for your help.

Jack
I know nothing of Photoshop but what I do when I have a question about an application is to open the "Help" files and look around there. You'd be amazed at the information you can dig up there AND GET a lot of your questions ANSWERED

Alan <>< Hi Alan,

I tried that already. Photoshop is not for beginners.

JackIt certainly is not. Neither is AutoCad.....erierailroad,1st the disclaimer"i know absolutely nothing about Photoshop". However my wife uses it fairly often and i asked her about your problem. The fault you are discribing is called "ASCUE".Now she has no idea if photshop has a feature to deal with that (never having had the occasion to need that service). Suggest as ale52 has already however in the help menu try typing in "ascue' and good luck, truenorth"ascue"? Really? Google yields nothing indicating "ascue" means what you say.

This sounds like a photo composition issue to me. In other words, what you really need to do is get farther away from the building to take your photo. Finding a high-than-ground level POINT from which to take the photo is also going to affect how the building looks in a photo.

I don't believe the building is really "leaning back" in your photo. Obviously, if you're standing at ground level and looking upward at a tall building, the top of the building is going to look smaller than the lower part. I think that's what you're really talking about.

I don't know whether Photoshop can manipulate that aspect of a photo. I don't have Photoshop. Try typing 'skew' into the help search box.Fed and Truenorth, Skew was the word I was looking for. Corrected the pic and printed it out, just like I wanted to.

JackSo you are now "un-skewed " ? ?

erierailroad Ain't success grand. Finally got around to coming back to your original post to check on your progress. My wife came and corrected my initial spelling (should have been "askew") which might have given you the clue earlier. i was dealing with my own critters in the swamp at the time and just tried to reach out and touch SOMEONE and hopefully help them out. As you can see don't always give up on some advice you may get from others indicating "you may be stuck" --sometimes perserverance will bring success. cheers, truenorth

Solve : copy data?

Answer»

A friend of mine has a computer which is CRASHED. I try to restore with NORTON recovery disk and I got the message of "partition unrecognized". I could only read the content of the Drive on DOS command.
I have tried to copy all data from DOS command to a CD. However when I load a driver to recognize the CD Rom, I got a message " C drive unreadable, cannot install driver for CD".
PLEASE show me how to copy all data before I partition the drive.
Thanks for your time and considerations
The first thing to do is to download and run the free diagnostics from the APPROPRIATE drive maker's site. That drive may have already headed south. And secondly instead of trying to recover all the data thru DOS which is the hard way you might want to consider installing that HDD as a slave drive to a known working machine with a burner and retrieve whatever data he needs...Thanks for helping, I will try with another computer to copy data

"A program is trying to automatically send e-mail on your behalf. Do you want to ALLOW this?
If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should choose "No"."

Below there's a box for "Yes" and "No"

The problem is there is no "Yes to all", "Always allow StudioPlus to send email" option or anything like that.

There is even a time delay of 5 seconds!! on every dialog box before I can press the "Yes" button.

If any of you could give me some TIPS on this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Anders
Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290499/EN-US/ it seems you have to give your external program permission to use the outlook send/receive COMMAND VIA an SDK kit.

Solve : Microsoft Outlook- can't get old email to new computer from good hard drive?

Answer»

My old PC died, main board crash, I have the old hard drive connected to my new PC through a USB cable, it comes up as drive F: - I want to transfer my email files and ADDRESS book from the old drive Outlook, to the new drive C: Outlook - both use MS Office XP (Office 10) - I can't find the old files, there is no .PAB or .PST file that I can find. I've also searched the terms mail and contacts but can"t find anything I can recognize. I tried the Import function in Outlook but could not find anything appropriate to import. Can you help?? What am I missing?? (Can you tell this is my first forum??)What method did you use to attempt to find .PST on the old hard drive?I changed viewing to see hidden files then did a search of the old drive. So, right click on Start, Search, then what? Did you check the box for subfolders? Did you select the entire drive F as the starting point?I searched the entire old drive INCLUDING sub folders. I actually found a pst file but it was old data.Have you retrieved anything from that hard drive?

I don't KNOW what else to suggest. I just plan to continue avoiding such a dilemma by backing up stuff to an external hard drive. If that hard drive works OK, you might get an external enclosure for a hard drive and install that hard drive in it, thereby creating an external hard drive. Thanks for TRYING.

Solve : File Sharing via IM?

Answer»

Can anyone recommend a PROGRAM that I can use to share files safely with a friend? I don't want to have to send one at a time, but would rather be ABLE to designate a folder that he can pull files from at his own leisure, as long as we are both logged into the service.

Windows Live Messeger has a Shared Folder feature, which is close, but I want to just designate an already existing folder.

AIM used to have something LIKE this, if i recall CORRECTLY. It has been a while since I used AIM, and I HATE it, but would reinstall it for this feature if it was there.

Other suggestions?

Solve : Registering Software after full RESTORE?

Answer»

Have Windows 98 and did a full restore. Want to give the computer to someone else. The software programs are asking me to register them. Do I have to re-register them with my information (previously registered several years ago) or can I register them with the new owner's info? Thanks.Using the new owner's info should work fine. However, depending on what software you're talking about, there may no point in registration. Just SKIP it. Support for it may no longer be available anyway, due to its age.If you have the appropiate keys for each APP i would just have the new owner register them.
What programs are we discussing ? ?It is asking to register at the computer maker (Compaq), the Windows 98 program, and perhaps more. The system won't let me load everything as it requires registration for the TWO mentioned above. There are other programs that came with the computer and I'm thinking they will want registration, also.

Thanks for your responses!

Sharon D.sharond, just did exactly this a few days ago-only difference is i am keeping the computer. Really it makes no difference which way you decide (yours or theirs) . The only time it will become an issue (again) is if the new owner --for whatever reason--needs to reinstall the operating system again. However given that they have the key for their own O/S it will allow them to replace or overwrite yours.Soybean is exactly right microsoft no longer supports any versions of win.98 (however the O/S install or reinstall still demands a key registry insertion). So probably any key will suffice. However ONE aspect thus far not dealt with is is the win 98 an "upgrade" version (yours or theirs) if so another hassle arises-- at one point of the install you(they) will be asked to show evidence of a previous version (ie, win95 or if upgrading to SE (second edition) win 98). Something to consider if you load an upgrade and don't have the earlier o/s or the same with the new owner if they have an upgrade and don't have an earlier version from which an upgrade was a possibility. i assume that the only software we are concerned with is the operating system . truenorth
P.S just see your latest (additional info post) The computer is seeing it as a new computer now and is treating you as if you are using it for the 1st time. Hense the Compaq registration. That shouldn't create any PROBLEMS just complete the registration --i don't think their will be any propritory questions--even your previous id (address etc should not cause a problem). The only issue should be do you want the new owner to have to remember your id stuff or do they want to create their own? I am sure everything pertaining to that computer is no longer supported by Compaq now anyway--i have been down that road with them as well and if it is beyond warranty they will only talk to you for support if you agree to pay them.

Solve : Do I still Need Norton.?

Answer»

Hello again ,

I currently use ad-aware, spy-bot,crap cleaner and AVG. On my NEVER ending task of cleaning up this PC i was wondering if I still need Norton.
Norton came free on the PC for 3 months and I have no plans on paying to keep it active.

Thanks,
MP.I'd say you definitely don't need it because you already have AVG on there, and sometimes having 2 anti-virus programs on your computer makes them GO "WONKY". Read Here for the Norton Removal Procedure.I agree.Having more than a couple that specialize in overall protection makes all of them act crazy.I would definately say get rid of Norton.Im not a big fan of it but it works somewhat. But you have enough stuff to cover yourself. Thanks folks it's next on my list.OK There is no norton removal tool on that page. lol And I'm right in the middle.I searched and found the Norton removal tol on another page here.

BUT when I rebooted my computer it would not boot with anything else except "Boot from last known good START up" something like that. Would not even boot in Safe mode.

Is this normal.MP1975--Unfortunately anything that can be screwed up in the using or TRYING to uninstall Norton is "normal". There should be a law against them being able to install Norton on anything unless someone requests it and is prepared for the consequences. AVG free is much better. Norton invades everything on your computer. truenorthTruenorth - Thanks I just needed the nod of approval from some one who has done this before. It sure had an awful lot of entries all over the computer. I'll consider it completed and normal now.

Thanks much.

Can anyone share some info on this? When sending an email you GET "message undeliverable, you cannot send email to this recipient".

Thanks in advance!kng091003, A LITTLE more info might help in determining the cause of your message; ie. is this a recipient you have successfully contacted in the past?is it a KNOWN recipient? Is it a personal or BUSINESS recipient? What is your e-mail client? What kind of INTERNET connection are you using? Are you as part of your e-mail trying to send an attatchment? There can be many reasons for the message you are getting and answering the preceeding questions might help narrow it down. truenorth

Solve : Colour picking application?

Answer»

Does anyone know of a (free) application that allows me to pick whatever colour I SEE on a webpage and save it to memory in hexadecimal format for use Photoshop, etc. I see some freeware here: http://www.programurl.com/software/color-picking.htm. I haven't used any of them but it looks like you may have some good options there.Hm, ANYTHING tested & tried? The only software I've actually used with a color picking tool is Microsoft Image Composer, which came with Microsoft FrontPage 98 that I bought years ago. I see GIMP has a color picker that picks colors from an image within GIMP. With Image Composer, I can use the color picker to roam outside of Image Composer and obtain colors, which is what you really want to do.I was thinking of installing Gimp, but it wants me to install GTK +2 ENVIRONMENT. What is that and why do I need that? I had not heard of GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment until you mentioned it. I have the portable version of GIMP; I downloaded it from portableapps.com. When I installed it on my flash drive, I did not get any message about having to install GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment. So, either the portable version does not require GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment or I already have it, although I don't recall ever having installed it.

Did you see Installers for GIMP for Windows?Yep, that's the one that demands that you install GTK environment. I'll use the portable as well, can't be BOTHERED installing extra stuff to get one program to RUN. You're definitely better off without GTK. I had to get rid of it because it wanted to hog up more space than I was comfortable with.I just learned that Paint.NET also has the feature and, like GIMP, it works within Paint.NET. Paint.NET has its own forum @ http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/index.php

Solve : End result of Defrag.?

Answer»

When I run defrag and it completes I notice there are still white bands mixed in with the blue. This PC , HP Pavilion DV2000 Laptop, has always been like that just figured I'd ASK now.

Thanks in advance.
MP.I get the same result on my desktop, using the standard Windows Disk Defragmenter. I believe it's NORMAL. In fact, I think it MAY actually be a good thing; those empty spaces may, indeed, slow down the fragmentation that occurs between runs of defragmenter. Thanks much. Just use to the days when all colors grouped together. Some FILES are in use and it is not possible to move everything to the middle of the platters with a tool like Windows defragmenter.

Solve : Recovery drive D and defrag?

Answer»

I tried to defrag my recovery drive D and receive the following error.

15% of free space si NEED to complete this function. When I tried to OPEN drive D to delete SOMETHING it would not let me. I have an HP Pavilion dv2000 running XP.

File System FAT 32
Capacity 11.75gb
Free 1.38gb
%Free space 11%

Does this drive really need to be defrag'ed and how should I go about it.

As usual thanks,
MP.
No, it doesn't need to be defragged. It is a partition that has your operating system on it and shouldn't be USED for any data storage. Usually there isn't much space on that partition anyway. Just leave it alone and you should be fine.

Alan <>< Thank you Al I love when things are simple.
