Solve : Mysterious space loss? |
Answer» Hi, my name's Ian, and I'm completely stupid when it comes to computers. How does My Computer report the used and free space when you right click the drive and select properties ? ?I haven't used any P2P in two years or so, and I use iTunes... and I just did a search for all my pictures, music and videos, and it produced a list of four or five instances of my My Pictures FOLDER and two of my iTunes folder, but they both showed the same computer address, and I couldn't actually find any doubles when I explored the folders it pointed me to. *censored* ftw? Also, I clean out my internet temp files automatically each time I exit firefox, but I just did it manually just to check. No noticeable difference. You probably won't be able to delete all but atleast some or most of the files from here which take up a huge amount of space. If you go to control panel, folder options, view tab, check Show hidden files and folders, then go primary drive>documents and settings>user>Local Settings>Temp - first just check how much space does it take up and report back with the results.Quote from: patio on May 11, 2007, 07:43:46 PM Quote from: patio on May 10, 2007, 07:34:50 AMThree times and he hasn't answered the question yet. Solve : Photoshop GIF images?? HELP Please.? |
Answer» Hello. Download Microsoft GIF Animator and give that a try. It's freeware. I really hate to hijack this thread (I'll do my best to not let that happen), but I downloaded this program out of curiosity and when I try to install it, it fails because it's looking for MSE11E.tmp\setup.exe in my Temp folder, but the file doesn't exist (why would it?). Anybody else having this problem?Um...NEVERMIND...it managed to work itself out. Odd. Anyway, thanks for the link, soybean. It's not as good as something like Animation Shop Pro (not free), but it's always nice to have a secondary program handy.for a really simple animation program, GO for UnFreeZ. it's tiny and fast and WORKS, but is limited by a few things, like you can only have one slide speed for all frames.Photoshop is good for creating the images, but ImageReady is what you want to use to set up the animation (if you are doing this with Adobe tools). |

It seems to be more commonly used for Professional, though, which is the case with my version.OK.....but there isn't gpedit in XP Home, i'm 100% sure of that.However... Solve : Start-up, running processes clean up.? |
Answer» Cool. If I choose I'll just REMOVE the desktop icon and leave it be. Actually, you can "remove" it by going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components (the button on the left side of the Add or Remove Programs panel), and unchecking the box for Internet Explorer. This just removes it from the Start menu and Desktop. That's why that panel SHOWS 0.0MB as the CHANGE in hard drive SPACE. It's not really REMOVING any program files. |

Solve : Zip Files - maybe? |
Answer» I have a friend in another state, that for a few years, I have exchanged e-mails with once or twice a week , from my home to her workplace. I run Windows XP Pro. In the last few weeks she has been unable to answer any of my mail, either by hitting the 'Reply' button or directly. She gets all my mail, but can't return anything. She politely inquired to her comapny and was told that they block all OUTGOING Zip Files. Does that have anything to do with REGULAR, text only e-mails.? I am on Yahoo. I can reach her directly THRU her company SITE address. Not sure how Zip Files are used. Would this be the problem. ? She has no trouble sending "intermediaries", who pass it along, . . . . . so have they just blocked MY address for outgoing. They didn't say they did that, or not. If they did, I think they would have confronted her with it, and explained why . . as a warning. (?)Zip files are archived files and aren't sent along with standard E-mails unless you include them on purpose. |

Solve : Excel Help for sums..? |
Answer» First let me STAT that I am a true novice at Excel. With that in mind, my question might be quite simple to ANSWER. I am working on a program to keep stats for a baseball team. I have one page where the Year to Date stats will appear. Then I have a page for each game (60 GAMES). What I would like is the YTD to tally each game. I can manually enter the formula such as ='1'!B4+'2'!B4+'3'!B4+'4'!B4+'5'!B4+'6'!B4+'7'!B4+'8'!B4 to add the games for the person on the 4th row through the first 8 games. My question, is there a simple SUM forumula I can add without typing each and every 60 games for each and every player?? Hope this isn't too confusing.. |

Solve : Java question? |
Answer» I don't really understand Java or what it is. But my computer is very slow and part of the reason is that I have it on my computer. I have Java2SE. The problem is, I have 4 or 5 updates of it. I have J2SE 5.0 Update 4, J2SE 5.0 Update 6, etc. Can I get rid of these? Or maybe all of them besides the most recent. It will greatly help speed up my hard drive. I don't really understand Java or what it is. What makes you think Java is the culprit & making your system run slow? Run antivirus and antispyware tests lately? Alan <>< Alan makes a good suggestion; you may want to scan your computer for viruses. But yes, you can delete those older updates. Better yet, you may want to install 6.0 and get rid of 5.0 altogether.I have 2 forms of spyware protection, Mcafee and AOL Spyware. I run Mcafee Scans twice a week and AOL scans everyday (Mcafee takes much longer). And I don't think Java is the culprit, but it is taking up a lot of space on a very SMALL, very old hard drive. All I was asking is if I could delete the old updates. That's the only protection you have? No firewall? You may want to consider replacing McAfee with AVG Free. It doesn't take up as many resources or space. Also look into Ad-Aware. CCleaner is your friend too.Just curious, slafa23, how big is your hard drive and how much free space do you have? And, do get a firewall.A small older HDD won't get any quicker....with or without Java.I'm sorry. I left out the firewall. It's all part of Macafee. Also, this is a very old computer. It has a 20GB hard drive. It is a 7-12 year old Gateway. 10.5 is used, 8.6 is free. However, the computer still runs slowly. Also, is CCleaner an adware/spyware protection? Or will it help clean the hard drive? Thanks again. Quote from: patio on April 28, 2007, 10:56:15 AM A small older HDD won't get any quicker....with or without Java.Getting rid of unneeded programs will speed up the computer a little bit.Yep, you have an old machine there. Can't you be more precise on the AGE? "7-12 year" is a huge range, as far as computers go. As CBMatt said, McAfee is heavy on resource demands. I think it's a bad choice for that older system. You might try Sygate Personal Firewall, and AVG, as CBMatt mentioned. CCleaner is not adware/spyware protection; it's a hard drive cleaner and registry cleaner. It can free up some hard drive space and make your system run better. So, do you have SecuritySuite, then? It's a PRETTY decent program (I use it), but I would still get AVG Free, though, as it takes up fewer resources. As for CCleaner...it is, as the full name implies, a crap cleaner. It will clean out your temp and Temporary Internet Files, as well as other JUNK. Keep in mind that freeing up space will only be a small improvement. More RAM and/or a better CPU would help you out a bit more, but I think you would be better off investing in a new computer. You're lucky that old thing is EVEN running anymore. EDIT: Looks like soybean pretty covered it already. Heh.It's more like 10 years old. It is an old Gateway. I got it from a friend who was throwing it out becuase it was full of viruses and adware and stuff. So I wiped it and now it's running well. It's just slow. Which can be expected from such an old computer. However I am just trying to clean it up to make it run better. I also have a 180 GB external harddrive. So I keep all of my files on there and trying to clean off my 20GB C: Drive.Quote from: slafa23 on April 28, 2007, 12:25:12 PM So I wiped it and now it's running well. It's just slow. Which can be expected from such an old computer. However I am just trying to clean it up to make it run better.Seems to be a contradiction here. I presume, by "wiped it", you mean you formatted the hard drive and freshly installed Windows. So, that would be clean state; no further cleaning would be necessary. However, if you used some Recovery CD that had other stuff on it besides Windows, you may have some software installed that could be removed. And, yes, you may benefit from running CCleaner. What OS are you running? How much memory do you have? If you have 32MB or less and you're running Win 98/98SE, you'll get much better performance by adding memory. 64MB would be big improvement; 128MB would be even better. But, before you buy larger memory modules, you'd better verify the largest size memory module and maximum memory that computer can handle. I have a Packard Bell Pentium dating back to Oct 1995 that has 128MB and runs Win 98SE. At 128MB, it's maxed out. I wiped it 2 years ago when I got it. I was just showing how old it was. In the years I've added crap I don't need, thus I am deleting it. I am running XP. I have 320 MB of RAM , 447MHz. |

I know there is an option for making the new drive the primary but I don't want to do it if I am forced to make the new drive the boot drive. Am I clear? Did you check the box for subfolders? Did you select the entire drive F as the starting point?I searched the entire old drive INCLUDING sub folders. I actually found a pst file but it was old data.Have you retrieved anything from that hard drive? |

Solve : File Sharing via IM? |
Answer» Can anyone recommend a PROGRAM that I can use to share files safely with a friend? I don't want to have to send one at a time, but would rather be ABLE to designate a folder that he can pull files from at his own leisure, as long as we are both logged into the service. |

Solve : Registering Software after full RESTORE? |
Answer» Have Windows 98 and did a full restore. Want to give the computer to someone else. The software programs are asking me to register them. Do I have to re-register them with my information (previously registered several years ago) or can I register them with the new owner's info? Thanks.Using the new owner's info should work fine. However, depending on what software you're talking about, there may no point in registration. Just SKIP it. Support for it may no longer be available anyway, due to its age.If you have the appropiate keys for each APP i would just have the new owner register them. |

Solve : Colour picking application? |
Answer» Does anyone know of a (free) application that allows me to pick whatever colour I SEE on a webpage and save it to memory in hexadecimal format for use Photoshop, etc. I see some freeware here: http://www.programurl.com/software/color-picking.htm. I haven't used any of them but it looks like you may have some good options there.Hm, ANYTHING tested & tried? The only software I've actually used with a color picking tool is Microsoft Image Composer, which came with Microsoft FrontPage 98 that I bought years ago. I see GIMP has a color picker that picks colors from an image within GIMP. With Image Composer, I can use the color picker to roam outside of Image Composer and obtain colors, which is what you really want to do.I was thinking of installing Gimp, but it wants me to install GTK +2 ENVIRONMENT. What is that and why do I need that? I had not heard of GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment until you mentioned it. I have the portable version of GIMP; I downloaded it from portableapps.com. When I installed it on my flash drive, I did not get any message about having to install GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment. So, either the portable version does not require GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment or I already have it, although I don't recall ever having installed it. |
