If you did a clean install of the new XP/SP2 , you would have to recreate your OE Email account ...( HOPE you saved the WAB ) .
As far as IE 6 being reinstalled , let it finish and then go to the MS update site and d/l IE 7 again.

Answer» I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this. I'm trying to help a friend of mine. It seems that one of her sons installed Bearshare (?) which apparently included Goggle Desktop. Now she can't get Firefox to run. When she clicks on the icon..Bearshare starts instead. I had her go directly to the folder and try to start it from there, again nothing but Bearshare. I had her reinstall Firefox and still it doesn't work. I could use some suggestion.Uninstall Bearshare first? And try running the Cleaner and Issues on CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar). Also, what protection does your friend have? I would install AVG Free ONTO that computer, update it, and run a full scan in Safe Mode (PRESS F8 repeatedly as it's booting). Her son probably downloaded some sort of HIJACKER. I had something like this happen long ago, but it was Limewire loading in place of Task Manager.I guess I was right, I told her that Bearshare hijacked Firefox...her son also installed Bearshare on his computer and it was hijacked. I passed on the suggestions from here. I also told her to DOWNLOAD Hijack Then run the program and save a log. Then I directed her to post the log and see if someone has any suggestions. It's kind of hard for her to get the hang of this...she is 70 and not very experienced with computer problems and how to search for help online.I don't know that Bearshare did it. More likely it was things downloaded from a P2P program like this. They are full of viruses and other risks. There are a LOT of reasons to remove it and run a virus and spyware scan in safe mode. What were you using for protection?

Answer» Hi, I am not sure whether this is hardware or software issue. I am a lap top user and this morning my laptop keyboard was malfunctioning in that if I type certain letters or numbers, they are substituted with other random entries. i.e if I type a j for example it comes up on the screen as a 5. This is happening for about half the alphabet which makes it unusable. Is this a virus? Any help appreciated...You could try the following :- Boot with a MS-DOS Floppy or CD and try and press the alphabet that is giving a problem. If the problem persists, it is possible that your Keyboard has a problem - in this case try to get the keyboard repaired or replaced. If on booting with the floppy or CD in the DOS mode, the keyboard works OK, then there is a problem with your Windows Operating System. Install windows again and it should be OK. Did you play with the keyboard settings perchance?I haven't intentionally played with the keyboard settings but my 7yr old does use the computer and he may have inadvertedly pressed something....how would i check that? Thanks for the MS DOS FEEDBACK but it is all double dutch to me as I am really just a software user and have not really had any training in systems - maybe I need to have a repair shop look at it. Personally, I like Sony Vegas Movie Studio.I noticed Sony Vegas Movie Studio in the list of noteables and I have a Sony camera. Can you tell me what you like about it and any thing you do not like about it. Any liability for this product is of course resolved.I mainly like it because it actually works. Heh. I've had a lot of trouble with video editing software (I also have a Sony camera) and this is the first program to not give me loads of problems and complications. The file sizes are pretty big, but it's also good quality. One problem, however, is that I have yet to figure out how customize the resolution (it's stuck at 320 x 240). Also, my videos come out a little darker than on the camera, but I'm not sure if this is an issue with the software or not. The same thing happens with my HP digital stillshot, so maybe this is normal. Sound quality is great, though. Adobe's editing tools APPEAR to be more advanced (I have minimal experience because it won't recognize my camera), but Vegas has a lot of the same features/tools. I think you should download the free trial (it's a comparitively small file; I downloaded it on dial-up) and play around with it for a bit. I haven't been using this program long and I haven't familiarized myself with the various editing tools, so I can't comment too much about them. But as far as recording and encoding (in several popular formats) GO, I'm quite pleased. My only qualms so far are the brightness and resolution.Thanks and I will do just that. A trial version is a good idea that I had not thought of. I had read an article about Adobe that meantioned something about problems with camera downloading with mpeg-2 format. I have a Mini DV camera Sony DCR-DVD108 that produces mpeg2 format clips. Which do you have CBMatt?I would have to recommend the Platinum version, mainly because it's the version I'm using. I haven't used the regular package, so I don't know what it might be lacking. You could try out both trials and see if the regular package is enough to suit your needs. It's a bit of a pain, but hey, maybe you'll save yourself 30 bucks or so. My camera is a Sony DCR-TRV250 NTSC. A little old, but still nice. I'm not entirely sure what the standard video format is, but Vegas lets me record in several different formats, so I guess it's not too important. Heh.

We've got all the CD's, but when I try to install the Prerequisites (Framework 1.1), we're getting an error message, saying ANOTHER program needs the computer to reboot. There is no such thing; we've tried rebooting multiple times. ALTHOUGH I found a whole crapload of viruses, removing them didn't change anything. Scanned with Avast!, SpyBot and A2. The goal is to make Java more popular and generate demand for products based on the language at a time when Sun is struggling to stay profitable. That's no small task, considering Sun (SUNW) faces competition from do-it-yourself open-source software tools that can SPEED creation of online software, as well as products from Microsoft (MSFT) and Adobe Systems (ADBE) that make Web site creation a breeze. Sun announced two upcoming Java software products—JavaFX Script for writing interactive Web sites and JavaFX Mobile for running software on mobile phones—designed to persuade the world's 6 million Java developers to use the technology to link older Java systems with newer software. "What's happening on the Internet is all these systems are being connected to one another," Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz said at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco May 8. "We have to have coherence." Open Playing Field Sun introduced Java in 1995, and demand for the programming language and associated software for PCs, servers, and handheld computers quickly zoomed because of the ease and speed with which developers could use it to create new products. But a series of market missteps and changing tech trends have limited Sun's ability to capitalize on Java. IBM (IBM) and others became large suppliers of Java software for servers and PCs. Although 1.8 billion cellular phones run Java to power simple applications like games and address books, Sun only collects a small royalty on each one. What's more, the popularity of Linux and other software that's published in the open has diminished developers' interest in Java. Sun is addressing that tension by releasing all of its Java technology under the same open-source license as Linux, a move completed May 8 (see BusinessWeek.com, 4/30/07, "Sun Mulls Deeper Open-Source Dive"). At the same time, Java's influence on the Web has slipped. Adobe's Flash software has become the de facto standard for creating sites with highly responsive user interfaces and embedded video clips. Microsoft in April announced a similar set of tools called Silverlight (see BusinessWeek.com, 4/16/07, "Microsoft Aims to Outshine Adobe's Flash"). Developers have also turned to the open-source tools known as AJAX and the Ruby on Rails development language as faster alternatives to Java (see BusinessWeek.com, 12/13/05, "Java? JavaFX Script is supposed to address some of those shortcomings by enabling Java developers to write software faster and run it more quickly over the Web. "Java has historically been too hard," said Sun's Schwartz. Risky Business But the market for development tools has changed over the past decade, says Dana Gardner, principal analyst at technology consulting company Interarbor Solutions. Instead of just languages and tools, developers now want technologies they can use to combine services on the Web—like those made available by Google (GOOG) that help companies use mapping and calendar software on their own sites, or the ways Amazon.com (AMZN) provides access to its computing and storage capacity. Sun could do the same by publishing the so-called application program interfaces to its OpenOffice productivity suite or hosting storage for customers, but that would put it at risk of competing with customers, says Gardner. I googled for it but I can only find one site were you can download it and the site isn't recommended by SiteAdvisor.Here is the completion notice from DKlite. It runs super fast which is normal. I watched it carefully and it sits at 12% for a few seconds then speeds through to 100% and says everything has completed NORMALLY. The display of the files they show you don't ACTUALLY change to MUCH from the original before you actually run DKLite. I'll TRY this for a while. Findings on C: Diskeeper has completed a defragmentation run on this volume and there remain 0 fragmented files and/or DIRECTORIES and 0 excess fragments. (There were 333 excess fragments before the defragmentation run, and now there are 100% less.) The average number of fragments per file is 1.00. Congratulations! There are no excess file or directory fragments on this volume. The files on this volume are as defragmented as possible. Still, you should schedule Diskeeper to run at least once a day (if you haven't already done so) to maintain this low level of fragmentation. Answer» Hey guys, I have a small issue. We have a windows server box with key drives that i use as a NAS/FTP for the EMPLOYEES. As the business has GROWN this had lead to a issue; most windows deamons i run into to of course support drive LETTERS and FTP is normaly a unix app. So, since the storage has expanded to multiple HDD's i have had to create 4 different accounts for each employee to reach each hdd, since windows WANTS me to make a new root on each drive. I have worked around this by keeping the new stuff/most accessed/needed on the main HDD and root, and ALSO keeping it on a domain share as well, but its getting to be a issue. Also because we have a dual hard/soft ware raid in the box and the USB tape drive in the box is all setup and drivers for windows, so i dont really want to install a nix os unless i must. Is there a windows deamon or a way to use something like windows mount points? Cygwin maybe? I've messed with that before, but since graudateing i've mostly worked with windows and my linux/unix skills are not as sharp as they used to be, so input is appericated! (And no laughing at me. )

However, when I open the Windows folder the downloaded video files are in, the window immediately closes and gives me a send error message dialog box. Here is the real puzzler. I did the same thing on my laptop with no problems. Memory isn't a problem. One other thing that might be a clue. When the window closes the icons for Ghost and Sound Volume in the Sys Tray disappear. Wow what a weird chain for events. There you will find many applications that start when Windows starts. Answer» I do not have a question, just a comment. After using AVG for several years in my Win XP system, I decided to remove it and try something else. After upgrading AVG to the 2011 version earlier this MONTH, Windows Explorer was not properly loading all program icons that normally load in the Notification Area, or System Tray. I also feel AVG has become afflicted with the bloat syndrome. It was ACCOUNTING for 9 processes in Task Manager and the Add or Remove Programs showed it to be consuming about 96MB, as I recall. I suspected that AVG was causing the problem with Explorer during startup. After removing it and restarting, all icons/programs were loading correctly. After installing MSE, I opened Add or Remove Programs and see that it only consumes about 16MB. The drive space is not an issue in itself but it's an indication of the bloat syndrome. I had also been thinking about making a change of anti-virus program before the upgrade of AVG to version 2011. A full hard drive scan was a slow process, usually taking several hours, and slowed the computer while AVG was scanning. I should mention some hardware specs: an AMD Athlon XP 2200 and 512MB of RAM. In a more powerful system, perhaps I would not have NOTICED much impact from AVG running a scan. Regarding the choice of MSE, it's just one of the anti-virus programs I have been thinking about trying, based on a favorable impression from various sources. I'm using avast! anti-virus in my Win 7 system and like it but just THOUGHT this would be an opportunity to try another anti-virus program. I dropped Avira AntiVir from 2 older computers because it refused to auto-update or even manual update. Even on a new computer is doesn't update daily, where AVG does. Installed AVG 2011 on the 2 older computers with no apparent issues. There have been 5 releases of AVG 2011 in the past couple weeks to correct major bugs. Haven't updated the old computers with the latest REVS. The auto-update sometimes doesn't update the engine, just the defs. I notice that AVG has 9 processes running consuming 30-40MB RAM. The install program is now 140MB, installed about 100MB.

I also tried switching the cords for the DVI connections around, also didnt work. My specs are: OS: Windows 7 CPU: AMD ATHALON Dual Core 2.4 GPU: 9600GT NVIDIA if you need more detailed specs i can give them. thanks everyone, i really need your help.This isn't exactly a fix but more of a work-around. you could SET the secondary monitor as the primary monitor and it will play the games on that screen then.Can you play the older games like Q3 in windowed MODE?

When we open an Office program, it defaults to the 2010 version, which isn't ALLOWED until I pay for an activated version. (Truth be told, I prefer Word 97, anyway). I've tried picking Word 97 as the default to open *.docs, but it STILL defaults to Word 10. Short of deleting the 2010 files, is there an option to fix this?First, if you have no intentions of using Office 2010 I'd recommend uninstalling it. I've read that Office 97 is also not compatible with WINDOWS 7 because of Windows 7 UAC. I would also imagine running 64-bit that you're also going to run into issues. However, that being said, you should be ABLE to get it to work running Windows XP Mode in Windows 7.
