Solve : Lock the system??

Answer»

Is there a freeware download that will lock the system so it can't be used until I enter a password? I have seen Matrix but did not think it very secure. Thanks for any suggestions.Matrix???

What version of Windows are you running? If Win XP, do you have a password on your user account? There are many ways for locking down a system without additional software....more INFO as suggested and a slew of answers will be forthcoming.Just press Windows key and L at the same time and if you have a password on your account, which you can set with user options, it will lock the computer for you. No additional programs are required. Come on, let's not make this more complicated than it needs to be.Running Win XP Pro
I do not have a password on my account but will check the help system to find out how to put one on it.
Matrix on link below:

Excellent ! We're moving in the right direction...That matrixlock application looks pretty good, I just GRABBED it for myself.
I've always used Windows-L and just LEFT it at that, but I'm a sucker for cool gimmicks like this.
Plus, I'm a huge Matrix fan.
So there you go.And there you have it...Apparently so.Question! Someone told me if computer is switched off and back on Matrixlock would no longer be locking the system. I presume the Win/L method is not open to that? (No, not TRIED it, don't want to SWITCH computer off without shutting down properly in case it causes more problem!)Windows-L will not continue to lock the system if the power is switched off, no.

Solve : Copying a Sage CD?

Answer»

Hi everyone!

Wish I'd found this place years ago

For now though, anyone answer a legal/software question for me please?

We purchased a Sage accounts package via our OLD accountants. The package was loaded straight onto our book keepers laptop. We have never been given or seen the original cd, box, leaflets, etc. I asked for the cd sometime later and was told it had been given to the book keeper (it wasn't, we have ESTABLISHED that). However, the accountant said he could give me a copy.

He gave me a cd with Sage handwritten on it. He gave me the codes to put in.

I'm assuming the copy he gave me was a copy of our original. Is this legal?

ALSO, if he insists he left the original with the book keeper, how would he have a copy to give me? Is it right to take copies of soft ware 'just in case' it gets lost?

This is a very large accountancy FIRM, not some cowboy who would expect us to turn a blind eye sort of thing...

Many thanks in advance!

So we know for certain that he lied to you straightaway on at least one occasion...

Now what was your question?

Hayles....... Are we refering to the Simply Accounting package ?
If we are , it's quite possible that the product was purchased ONLINE and d/l and then a copy put onto a disc ....... or for a additional charge, Sage would ship a original cd to the purchaser. It's also possible that your "old accountants" had purchased a multiuser license ( which would cover 6 users).

Quote
He gave me a cd with Sage handwritten on it. He gave me the codes to put in.
This is possible, if the original was downloaded and the key given to your company.

Quote
Also, if he insists he left the original with the book keeper,
possible, but unlikely if the original was downloaded.

Quote
how would he have a copy to give me?
again if it was D/L thats all they would have had ....so a copy is what you would have received.

If you want to be sure that your company is not using pirated software, contact Sage ...they should be able to tell you.

Hope this helps .......

Solve : Clickable Links?

Answer»

Well... I Googled it for a couple of hours but can't figure it out, I need to know how to make clickable links, example.. this---> http://codecs.com/movies/Flushed_Away.htm, is a link for a trailer of the movie Flushed away, so lets say I want to send it through e-mail to a friend but I would like that he clicks on that link or something else instead of the whole link like click here to see trailer and then it opens in a new page, I know its kind of a code and you put the original link in it and then it works but I couldn't get it to work, anyone GOT an idea would be niceDo you mean like this?

If that's all you want to do, then this is the code you need...

YOUR TEXT[/URL]

Just insert the site link and whatever text you want in the appropriate places, which will look something like...

Code: [Select]<a href="http://codecs.com/movies/Flushed_Away.htm">click here to see trailer</a>
If you want the page to open in a whole new window, then add a TARGET="_blank" which will give you the following code...

Code: [Select]<a href="http://codecs.com/movies/Flushed_Away.htm" target="_blank">click here to see trailer</a>
Click on this link to test the code out for yourself. And make sure HTML is enabled in your e-mail. Not all e-mail services support HTML coding.movie

What I'm I doing wrong?Look how I do it, exactly like you said and still it doesn't workThere you go...Oops! I didn't notice until now that the code was screwed up. I don't think the forum likes us using HTML like that. Heh. Sorry!

That picture you attached, however, is the correct way of writing the code (I'm glad you managed to figure it out). Did it work for you or are you still having trouble?

For more in-depth information about hyperlinks, go here...

http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_links.asp

And again, I'm sorry about that first code turning out all screwy. I wish I would've caught that earlier. But like I said, it looks like you still got the right idea. Let me know if you're having any trouble. No it didn't work, I don't know what I'm doing wrongAre you trying to use this code in an e-mail? If so, who is your e-mail provider?I use yahoo, but I still tried the same using hotmail, gmail and my internet provider one and also some forums just to post anything but still can't get it to work, I went to the page you posted and did exactly like it said and still no luckHmm, that's really odd. E-mail can be a bit tricky because not all providers allow HTML in e-mail messages. Go to your options and see if there's an option to allow HTML messages. Also, keep in mind that your recipient might be able to view HTML e-mails.

As for that link I gave you...I don't know why it wouldn't be working; it works just fine for me. Perhaps you could try it one more time and take a screenshot of exactly what code you're entering? Remember that you need to click on the "Edit the text and click me" button.

I've attached a zip file. In it is a Notepad file with what the code is supposed to look like. I tested it myself on that site and had no problems.NOTE: I don't actually use Yahoo!, so I don't know if they support HTML or not. Being browser-based, I would assume they do, but I could be wrong. Anyway...if the HTML continues to not work, there is an alternative. A simpler method is SIMPLY writing your text (click here to see trailer), highlighting it with your mouse, and then clicking on the Insert Hyperlink button on the toolbar (look at the attached picture). In the window that pops up, enter the link and click on OK.

EDIT: I just tested the code on Yahoo! and didn't have any luck either. Unless anyone has a solution, you might just have to use that Insert Hyperlink button.

EDIT #2: Ah, I FOUND the handy dandy Insert Code feature and now my first reply isn't all wonky. Silly me. Forgive me, I'm very tired. Heh.I copied the exact thing you send me in the text file and send it to yahoo, gmail and hotmail but it was the same result... didn't work... look at the pictureI got it working perfect using Thunderbird, I love Mozilla, its so easy, just Ctrl+L and insert the name then the link and there you go...
Anyway... thanks alot guys

Solve : Turning off hibernate??

Answer»

Hi there!

I know that this is a silly question and a lot of you will probably advise against it, although regardless, how would one turn off the hibernate function on their notebook computer? I am not sure if this function comes with all laptops or not, and it is incredibly irritating! You see, I am an AIM addict and prefer to keep my AIM up when I am away from the computer. This is dandy, except that after about an hour or so of screen-saver time my laptop goes into this irksome hibernate function and disconnects me from everything. I can occasionally debunk this nuisance by clicking and un-clicking random things in the Properties menu, but if somebody could enlighten me as to how to turn this function off properly, it would save me a lot of time and frustration. Thank you!

For the record, I have a 2005 Toshiba Tecra with an Intel Pentium4 with the basic Windows functions and BLAHBLAH. If any further information is necessary, I will try my BEST to provide it. I don't advise against it -- it's your electric BILL.

Start > Control Panel > (Performance and Maintenance) > Power Options > Hibernate (tab) > Uncheck "Enable hibernate"

Also, if you want, go to Power Schemes and set it to "presentation" in the top box. This turns off screen saver, monitor standby, and the "shut off hard disks" feature. That's what I use, at any rate. Blarghy, it won't let me check or uncheck anything in the "hibernate" tab -- it's all greyed out, if that makes sense. It also says something about using the Toshiba power saver, but there isn't an available option there, either. :/Do the options in the Power Schemes tab work? No, nor there, which I was going to edit my post with last night but somehow forgot to.I found a possible answer. However, it takes some mucking around in the Registry.

Quote

From experts-exchange:
Please check the Power Configuration in registry.
1. Start->Run "regedt32"
2. Navigate to the following location:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg]
3. The key named "currentPowerpolicy" states your current policy.
4. In the registry location: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies]
There should be have the Key in the left panel like:
0
1
2
3
4
5

Each stands for one power option.
It the above keys are lost, the power SCHEME options will be greyed out.
Hope this help.
See, I do have all of those, but for some REASON it remains greyed. Are you logged on as Administrator ? ?Yes'm.It's possible the laptop itself has some of these options locked down in the BIOS itself...travel to the manuf. site for an owner's manual if you don't happen to have yours handy.

Solve : reformatting an ext hard drive?

Answer»

When I was USING Win 98 I used an external hardrive for back up and storage. At that time I formatted it for FAT32. Later I switched to Windows XP and formatted all my internal DRIVES with NFTS. Now I would like to partition the ext drive. Can I do that WITHOUT losing all my data? Can I switch the format to NFTS? Or do I have to clean ff the entire drive and start over from scratch? :-?You can't add partitions without losing data unless you use Partition Magic or a similar third party tool.

If you are going to format the external drive, you could format it NTFS. If you do not format it but would still like to convert it to NTFS, I BELIEVE you can do that, same as internal hard drive; see How to Convert FAT Disks to NTFSThanks, I have an old version of Partion Magic on floppy that I have used on both win 98 and XP when I had them both on my PC. I'll check into it Maybe, if I partiition it 50/50 and format the blank half with NFTS, transfer every thing over from the first haf, then i can reformat the first half??? Sounds risky. Anyway, tahnks again. Will let you know how I make out., JIM

Solve : Quick question about CCleaner.?

Answer»

I know you guys are all fans of CCleaner and I figured I'd finally download it and run it. There's almost 300 MB of stuff marked for removal and it'd be awesome to have that little bit of free space (I don't need it, but it'd still be nice). But do I have to worry about anything important getting deleted? How does the program know if I need any of this stuff or not? Most of it looks like stuff I don't need, but what if there are things that I need and just don't realize it? Or am I just being silly?

Also, is there a way to tell to leave certain files ALONE? I'd prefer to keep my Ad-Aware logs and some of these Java files that it wants to delete.CBMatt.... Well , have you looked at the settings ? it shows you exactly what it is going to be removed....... also if you look at the ITEMS to be removed, and see something you don't want removed ........ highlite that item , right click and save as text file .
But I think you will find that theres nothing ccleaner is removing that you need .

When I do that, it simply makes a log of the things it has marked for removal.Well, I found the option to have it ignore Ad-Aware, so I'll remove it from the search list, which will take care of that. As for the Java files...I guess I'll just manually move them since for the life of me, I can't find a way to tell CCleaner to not delete them. Here we go...CBMatt..... oops.....I assumed you wanted a log of what was removed ...... If there's something that ccleaner has identified as junk and for some reason you dont think it is ........ before you remove anything , go to where ever this info is and save it to a separate folder ........ I have never heard of ccleaner removing anything which was required by the operating system or any of the installed programs ...but I SUPPOSE there has to be a first time for EVERYTHING ....... If you have information which points to ccleaner removing any necessary part of the operating system or any installed program rendering them inoperative...... Please let US know immediately so we may take the necessary action.
BTW , which version of ccleaner do you have installed ?

dl65 Currently, I have version 1.36 installed, but I'm updating to the latest version as we speak. And yeah, I just moved the files that I didn't want it to delete. They weren't important or anything...they're just cache files for a site I like and because I have a horrible internet connection, I wanted to keep the files so the site will still load quickly.

I don't have any real reason to suspect that CCleaner was deleting anything important. There were just a lot of files that I didn't recognize, so I wanted to be on the safe side. But after reviewing my log, it doesn't look like anything was too important. I just thought I'd ask for my own comfort. Heh. Thank you for your input.

I'm really glad I finally jumped on the CC bandwagon, by the way. It cleared out tons of registry junk that I didn't need. It would've taken me forever to do that myself.

Solve : Trouble with Google Toolbar?

Answer»

I am not sure if I have the right forum for this, so please feel free to move this or DELETE it if you need to.

My mom accidently installed Google Toolbar on my computer (and a BUNCH of other unneccessary Google programs). I uninstalled them soon afterwards. I think noticed something weird on my desktop. There was an empty Windows System files folder...I can't remember the name, but it was like 20%System20% something. I am assuming myuninstalling of the Google stuff did this. There were some folders within the folder, but there were no actual files. I delete the folder and all is well. But, something else may have been the cause of it.

While I was deleting the Google stuff, I thought I'd try to uninstall the Dell My WAY Search Assistant since I don't use it. But when I went to add/remove programs and tried to untinstall it, I got this message:
Error loading: C: PROGRA~1/MyWaySA/SrchAsDe/1.bin/desrcas.dll

So, what do you think the folder was from? Do you think it's anything to fret over (I get really paranoid about computer problems). Also, about uninstalling the My Way Searchbar....is there a way to do that, or do other people get the same problem as me?

Thanks in ADVANCE!Nah, I don't think that folder had anything significant in it. But, you might try ccleaner, to uninstall that "My Way Search Assistant".

8-)fffreakThank you for the response!

I did run ccleaner a few weeks ago. I'll run it again.

But, doesn't that not able to load file error seem kinda iffy? Like, do you think there is something wrong with my windows files?
Sorry for all the questions!

EDIT: I just RAN ccleaner and I still get that error that stops me from uninstalling My Way. Anyone know what I should do?You "ran" ccleaner, but did you use it's Uninstall feature, under Tools, to try uninstalling My Way Search Assistant"?Okay, I tried to run the uninstaller, and I got the same exact error message. Any other ideas?

Solve : MP3/WAV converter??

Answer»

Do you guys know of any good free MP3/WAV converters? I was using Ogg Converter, which I really like, despite its simplicity, but it's not freeware and sadly, my trial expired and I can't afford to dish out $20 right now. I've tried EXPStudio's Audio Converter, Pak Audio Converter, MeowMultiSound, and all of the other freeware programs on Download.com and they're all rubbish. I need a free program that can convert an MP3 to a WAV and back without compromising the quality. Or perhaps even some kind of decent MP3-editing freeware.Have you checked in our Software FAQ ? ?I hate to sound dumb, but I don't even know where to find that.In the FAQ SECTION, labelled "Essential Software Tools", I think QA00016.Quote

I hate to sound dumb, but I don't even know where to find that.

Doesn't sound dumb at all...i've been driving all my life, mostly at a high rate of speed and i can't find Poughkeepsie...Thanks for the help, guys. I tried all of the relevant software and didn't have the greatest results. dBpoweramp is good, but the freeware version won't do MP3's. MediaCoder will, but it adds a little crackle sound to the end of every song I work with. Which is really too bad because the sound quality is great. That annoying little crackle comes through so clearly. I have used the two programs to come up with a temporary solution, though. I can use MediaCoder to convert MP3's into WAV's (it has no problem with that; just with doing it the other way around). Then when I'm done with the WAV's, I can use dBpoweramp (with the codecs I just installed) to convert the WAV into a WMA file. Then I use Windows Audio Converter to convert that WMA to MP3. It's a pain, but at least there seems to be very little loss in quality.

But if anyone has any other suggestions, I would really appreciate it. If I have to use this CURRENT METHOD, I'll continue doing so, but it would be nice to do everything with one program instead of three. My Start menu is getting so cluttered. Looks like I'm gonna have to find an effecient way to organize all of my programs.

EDIT: Forget what I said about the three-program process not compromising the quality. I just reviewed a few files and the quality is actually really bad. It happens when converting the WAV to WMA. I guess I just didn't notice it in the particular sound files I had converted. Oh, how I miss my dear Ogg Converter. You will find a link to the software FAQ in my signature. Try Audacity - get the LAME encoder for it.Thanks, Rob! I guess I overlooked the link to the LAME encoder when I first downloaded Audacity. It's going to take me some time to get used to using this, but it does the trick and keeps the quality intact. Thanks a bunch. No problem.Hi Man,
How r u doin 2day? work n weather treating u there hope all is WELL fine with u there.

Help me out on this matter, I had a HP laptop hewlett omibook, but have lose the password am using to open the window since then i can not be able to use my laptop whenever i switch it on b4 it boot to window it will request for that password i lost and have checked the laptop it doesn't have CMOS battery
How do i do this, please help me out.

SholaMy first suggestion would be to make your own post so people will actually see your problem. And use a spell checker and proper sentence structure, without the "text MESSAGING speak". You will get answers then such as " You cannot reset this like a desktop. You will need to contact HP and they will probably sell you a new motherboard. There is no other fix."

Solve : Can't open links?

Answer»

I have an HP Media Center Service Pack 2PC, purchased 2005, running Windows XP, 2.80 Gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, 16 kilobyte primary memory cache, 1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache, 250 Gigabytes hard drive, using Outlook Express email, connected to internet with Hughes satellite, using the latest version of Internet Explorer, and my problem is I cannot open any links while on the internet, or in my email. I click on the link and the hourglass appears, and then sits there forever. When I boot up I get the following message "We're sorry the content you've requested is temporarily unavilable. Please try again" and that appears after bootup, and before the auto opening of AIM6 and Yahoo IM...When did this start, and what happened before it started? This began about 1 week ago, and I cannot think of anything I downloaded or changed on my computer...when I boot, as soon as my desktop appears, I get the "unavailable" message, and I click "OK" and then my AIM 6 and my Yahoo IM bootup...I have then on "auto" open...from then on, when I try to open links, the computer freezes. I HATE THIS COMPUTER!!!!!!!!What about if you type the address into the address bar?
Does that work?
Do YIM and AIM connect OK?If a link appears in an email, I have to highlight and copy it then paste it into my address bar...then it will open...when I try to click on it the computer freezes and I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Del to get out of the email...and yes, the AOL IM and the Yahoo IM connect fine...but, if I get into Yahoo games, I have trouble getting into a game table, and trouble changing tables ...Task Manager again, and then the complete sign-in process! What protection do you have?
And what about links in other PLACES?
Is it just Outlook Express that causes a freeze?I have Panda 2007. Failure to open links seems to be purely in Outlook Express...I get a few newspapers and some blog messages every day, and those are the ones I can't open...I also have downloaded Windows Defender. That is all I can find on my Belarc list of programs.Guess that's it! OH, well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1Update your anti-virus to the latest definitions, boot into Safe Mode, and run a system-wide scan. This sounds like an infection to me.Quote

Solve : Burning a CD/VCD to DVD??

Answer»

I want to burn a VCD specifically to a DVD, but I know there are some format kinks to work out which I don't quite understand. I have a DVD-RW drive, a CD-RW drive, and I used Nero Express 6, and found out obviously that you can't just copy a disc that isn't in the same format as the other one.

My question is, is there anyway possible of transferring the video from the VCD to the DVD? I think you can copy the data from the VCD to the computer first, then burn it onto the DVD or something, but I'm concerned that the DVD won't be read or work on a DVD player UNLESS it's a DVD drive on the computer.

Any help and explanations will be appreciated. Thanks. =)In order to ensure that the copy will be a success, you can't just copy files over -- you are correct about that.

Forgive me, but, I must ask before I go on -- this is a legally owned VCD, right? Not accusing you of anything; I ask because generally illegally pirated VCDs don't work very well.I believe it's a legally owned VCD, but how do I check? If you didn't steal it yourself, chances are it's legal. You'd have to download it.

To properly burn a VCD, you need to create an "image" of the disk on your computer. I don't know if Nero Express will work for this. You'll need to have a program create an ISO file from the VCD onto your computer, and burn that to the DVD in question. So after I make an image, what kind of process do I have to do to burn it onto the DVD? (Like "Make a DVD-Video" and those sort of options)SoulFire..... What function in Nero 6 ( suite) are you using ........?
Are you trying to simply copy the vcd or are you trying to convert it to dvd ?
What is the format of the data on the cd ?

I guess I really am pretty clueless when it comes to this ...

Anyhow, I was trying to covert the VCD into a DVD. The format of the data is a "DAT file", which opens with Windows Media Player, and there's also a couple of files under a .VCD format, which do not open.

And I haven't a clue what to do on Nero to burn this kind of thing. I know it's easier just to make a complete copy, but I was going to give this conversion a try. Sounds much more difficult than I expected. :-/Quote

Have you tried that? No, I haven't. However, this method is the most sure-fire method of GETTING a disk burned, and it seems a logical solution. If I am wrong in this, and VCDs are different, I apologize for the confusion.I was actually asking the OP, because they still haven't got it sorted.

Solve : Problem with joining .divx files?

Answer»

Actually it's about .avi files that i added subtitles on it with the program Avisub. The result files have extension .divx but i don't KNOW if that is exactly .divx files. The problem is that :i have movie separated at two parts and i want to make one file with added subtitles to it USING the program Avisub.I have tried a two ways to do that but without SUCCESS .First i added subtitles to first part of the movie and after that to second part of the movie and after that joining the the two parts using the program "movie joiner". The output file have extension .divx but there is no subtitle on it. The other WAY i first joining the .avi files without subtitle and after that TRY to add the joined subtitle file but it doesn't work too.The program stops somewhere in the middle with notice that says that the .divx file is generated but actually the .divx file is with small size and it can't be opened. I don't know if the reason for that is the joined .avi files or the joined subtitle file. For the joining the .avi files i use the program " movie joiner" as i said and for the joining the subtitles the program "subtitle workshop".

Solve : WINxp Edition?

Answer»

My new motherboard has a restriction on how much memory can be used effectively. Specifically, it recommended not more than 3Gig on "32-bit" edition and more for the "64-bit edition. Does this pertain to whether one has the Home Edition or the Pro? I have the former.XP Home and pro are both 32 bit.
XP Pro X64 is 64 bit.
Most editions of Vista are also 64 bit.
So if you have XP Home or Pro, stick to 3Gb.Why would you need more than that anyway?I don't think he does, but he wanted this clarified. (On the off-chance you've got a 4th GB of RAM lying around... can I have it, please? )As you will note, my statements were interrogative. Just want to learn if you guys don't mind. From what i've read XP won't USE much more than 3G max even under the toughest circumstances....Vista may be a different story altogether. It will use it, but a CERTAIN amount is reserved for hardware addresses.
So with 4Gb, 3.25Gb is available, max.
32 bit XP can only use up to 4Gb of RAM.
XP X64 can use up to 128Gb of RAM.
32 bit Vista can use 4Gb of RAM (Vista Starter Edition 1Gb max).
64 bit Vista Home Basic - 8Gb.
64 bit Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate - 128Gb of RAM max.
Does that help?THANKS for the simple answer to my simple question. I won't be installing more than 2Gigs in my new rig to start with. I'm trying to save up for other peripherals.Quote

Why would you need more than that anyway?
Why do some people climb Mt. Everest? Because it's there. But seriously I am only installing 2 Gigs but it's good to KNOW I have the lattitude to go higher (if necessary).Quote
Quote
Why would you need more than that anyway?
More than what?
3Gb?
Maybe for serious video or photo editing, or CAD work.
CAD gobbles up RAM like nothing else, except maybe Vista.
And sometimes Firefox.

Solve : Software Recommendation?

Answer»

My friend WORKS at a large business and needs 'software' that will document the business’s piping system. YES, she tried everywhere and could not find what she’s looking for. Ideally, she wants software that will document the piping system in the maintenance sector. Plz, can ANYONE find, or recommend the right software for this task?Hi, I know of software that **can** do this, it is very-advanced and I would recommend it to anyone in a situation like this. The software vendor is called ’Alias’, they offer piping software, just give them a call by and I’m sure they can provide you with the software you want (that’s in the piping category). For more information, plz visit the following URL: http://www.alias.ltd.uk/ good luck! What are the INCREDIBLE odds of this? The question just "happened" to be asked at 1:17. The respondent just "happened" to register his new account and name (very similar to the product name) just three minutes later. Finally, five minutes after that the answer was posted as the right respondent was on for the first time, "happened" to see it in the forum he "happened" to be in and was knowledgable about such an unusual topic in such a specific way.

So either this happened with greater odds than the planets lining up all in a row, or it was an advertisement. ...... Amazing ....... how answers like that pop up .........

in any event.......... have a look here .....

there appears to be a good selection to choose from.

Solve : Random Shuffle in Excel??

Answer»

Hello everyone,
Just wondering if there is a way of RANDOMLY shuffling a row or COLUMN of cells in Excel?
ThanksCreate a row/column whose VALUE is a random number then sort on that row/column.

Or try one of these: http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=sfp&p=excel+random+sortI've already thought about your first suggestion but, I have close to 200 entries.
I'll keep searching the websites you've provided.
Thanks.Just figured out how to randomly sort! It's probably what you meant Rob but, it took me a few minutes. I just used the RAND FUNCTION in excel in the column next to the one I wanted to sort. Then, I selected both columns and did a sort by ascending (or descending, doesn't MATTER). Now, I just delete the random number column and keep the column that's now randomly sorted Quote

It's probably what you meant Rob
You got it.

Solve : Corrupt video files.?

Answer»

My girlfriend and I have been very busy with school lately and haven't had a chance to see each other in a couple of weeks, so she asked me to record some videos for her and e-mail them to her. Unfortunately, the videos didn't work. Figuring she was missing certain codecs or something, I decided to just upload the videos to Photobucket because it would be much EASIER than trying to explain to her what codecs are and trying to figure out which ones she would need. However, when I uploaded the videos, they were corrupt and playing at a faster speed. I won't even bother trying to explain it; instead here is an example. I tried uploading to YouTube and got the exact same results.

I had no IDEA what was going on until I actually tried viewing the videos on my hard drive (I had previewed them before, but didn't watch them all the way through). At the end of the videos, I get an error saying "The state changed while trying to process the sample." (This is on Windows Media Player 10.) I clicked on the Web Help button and I was told that it was error 80040223, but they didn't have any information about it.

My instinct was to try updating the drivers for my webcam (Creative WebCam Instant), but the drivers I have are newer than the ones on the site. So, I installed the latest FX Utility and the latest version of the Creative WebCam Center program. The videos I record no longer get that error message and they upload to Photobucket just fine, but that doesn't solve the problem with the videos I've already recorded. Am I going to have to make these videos all over again, or is there some way to FIX the corruption? My computer specs are in my signature.I doubt it'll be possible to fix them.
There may be a way, but I don't KNOW of one.
It may be easier to just record them again.I was afraid of that. WELL, thanks anyway.

Solve : RAM Booster??

Answer»

Any opinions about RAM booster programs? I am trying RAMBooster v2.0, but have seen several others on freeware sites.
Are they any GOOD? Do they work? Any problems with them?

I use Win XP ProAre these the ones that are supposed to free up RAM?
They do nothing for you.
All they do is move some things out of RAM into the page file, which just slows your PC down.
Avoid them, they do no good.
Just my opinions though.I agree. They don't do anything Windows couldn't do. If you're low on RAM, buy some more With the speedup, you'll wonder how you ever survived before. And I'll agree with that.
More RAM is the easiest and cheapest way to increase performance (usually).
These programs to free RAM do more harm than good, it'd be better to just get some more RAM if you're low on it.Thanks for the advice. I will follow it and uninstall Rambooster. It may have been appealing when RAM was $150 for 4 megs., but there is no need for such crappola now.Quote

It may have been appealing when RAM was $150 for 4 megs., but there is no need for such crappola now.
Ah, the good old days, before I was even thought of . . .Lol, ram boosting tools probably use more than 4mb.I had one beast of a RAM booster (before I knew how useless they were) that sucked loads of RAM, it took up about 64Mb.
I only had 256Mb at that time, so it was a bit of a blow.
Oh, and the onboard GPU took up a further 32Mb.
So it really reduced performance.
That's why I stay away from them now.Well, we all like a free lunch! But this one SEEMS to be not so good. I have uninstalled it now. Thanks again. What a lot of them do is they tell Windows they are using RIDICULOUS amounts of RAM which cases Windows to ship data off to the paging file to make room for the RAM booster. The booster then gives back its memory and, in theory, you have free physical memory.

I have no DOUBT some tools are useful for optimising memory, but the majority of them don't really do anything that Windows couldn't do normally.

Does this machine have an add on sound card ? ?
If so re-install the drivers that came with the card.

If not the drivers for your onboard sound will be on your MBoard driver CD that should have came with the machine.

If you can't find it or don't have one then DLoad and run Everest Home on that machine. This will tell you what sound device you have and we can help you locate your drivers...

Solve : Microsoft Outlook Prompt for Password although OK?

Answer»

I'm using Outlook 2007 (this also happened on 2003) on a Windows XP Home system. My system is connected to the Internet using cable modem going through a Belkin Pre-N router.

I have Outlook configured to check several pop3 email accounts every 11 minutes.

The Problem:
Several times a day, I'll check my machine and see that there's an Outlook window displayed asking for the password to one of my pop3 accounts with a check box to SAVE the password.
These passwords are already saved and they work, for example, if I hit
cancel and the Send and Receive all of the accounts are checked successfully. And they have worked many other times during the day
before this intermittent issue.

Now, this is a problem because, while this message box is open, Outlook will not Send / Receive any of my other accounts. This poses a problem because my accounts can FILL up if they aren't
checked by Outlook on a regular basis; not to mention I'm not getting business e-mails in a timely manner.

I realize this is ultimately my ISPs issue because they are kicking back an issue with the password falsely but Outlook should handle this better.

My question:
Is there a way to CONFIGURE Outlook, such that if it fails to log into an account, simply ignore it and go on, and check it again as normal the next scheduled time (eg. 15 minutes later)? Or any other solution to stop this pop-up box from essentially stopping Outlook from continuing to send/receive as it should?I too have had this problem, although with only two accounts being checked. I am minded to think it could be one account trying to log on, whilst another has not fully completed it's send/receive operation and logged off.

I don't think what you ask is possible, but maybe a workaround could be to create another group, (I assume all your accounts are in one group) and move only the offending account into the new group. Then set them to check at , say, 9 minute and 11 minute intervals respectively.

I haven't tried this myself as my PC is not mission critical and I am happy to just check later, but I do understand your frustration at missing important business emails.

Solve : automation software that supports both IE7 and FF?

Hi, Does ANYONE know any good automation software for testing web applications that:
- is stable
- Can run on IE6, IE7, FF
- Can be run on XP, and Vista
- Supports double-byte chars
- Most importantly supports AJAX, dhtml, and flash

Tools that I've tried:
- SilkTest -> very stable, but doesn't RECOGNIZE dhtml objects
- TestComplete -> recognizes double byte chars, flash and dhtml, but very very unstable and TIME consuming to run.
- Watir -> pretty good but doesn't recognize flash objects, so far i'm having PROBLEM with displaying double-byte chars.

Is there any other software that can do these things better?

Solve : Microsoft Access Help?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new to these forums, so I'm not sure how well this is going to work, but here goes. I've got an assignment to do on MS access, and frankly, I have no idea what the *censored* I'm doing whatsoever. Could someone please walk me through it? Thank you in advance. Doesn't sound like your tutor has done a very good job...

What do you need to know?Well, this is taken straight from the assignment..

"• USING ADVANCED database features to create a database containing at least three tables, two forms (one with a sub-form), one query and one report."

This is also from it..

General Database Specifications
Your Access database will contain the following objects:
• An entity table of PERSONAL information, the records for which you will import from a comma–separated value (csv) file.
• A second entity table of your choice.
• One transaction table to hold the transactions between the other two entity tables.
• Two forms (one based on the personal information entity table and the other on the transaction table).
• One query based on at least two tables (including the transaction table).
• One report based on the query.

Even after seeing the professor do an example in class, I still have no clue on what to do.Also, I should point out that I've never used the program before, so I'd probably need extra clarification on even simple procedures.>Start here<

Have you had any database DESIGN training? Seems like rather a tricky assignment to do if you have so little experience.

Have you been SKIPPING classes?

Solve : Outlook 2003 Calendar?

Answer»

We USE Outlook 2003 for our email. We have a user in our office who has a shared calendar in Outlook. People in our office need to access his calendar so as they can properly schedule appointments around his availability. From his comuter, he can see his calendar. From everyone else's computers you can only see a blank calendar when his name is selected. This hasn't always been the case. Everyone was able to access his calendar before with know problem.

When I questioned him about it today he said, "I would guess that when we had the initial SNAFU with the viruses back in Novemeber that it may have happened then. At that time, Outlook TOOK on a new user interface than before."

I've only just heard about this problem a couple DAYS ago and can't seem to figure out what the problem would be. I guess it would have helped if someone told me about this when the problem FIRST occured. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Are you on an Exchange Server? That's normally required to share Outlook Calendars or Contacts. Sharing Microsoft Outlook Calendar and ContactsSorry it took so long for a reply. I ended up re-imaging the users laptop, due to multiple problems.

Solve : Outlook/Excel Mail Merge?

Answer»

At work, I have been asked to create a system whereby we have an Excel spreadsheet with two columns, the first containing the name of a client and the corresponding column containing their email address. (This part is, obviously, fine)

From this spreadsheet my boss then wants it to be possible to send emails en masse, by inputting their full name in the "To" field, and Outlook sending emails to their email address, as CONTAINED in the spreadsheet. Further to this, client confidentiality is important so it would have to be BCC'ed. I have a feeling we would need to involve Microsoft Word here as a kind of 'middle-man' and use the Word Mail Merge feature, but I am still unsure as to how to go about this whole operation. Can someone start me off?

p.s. I thought maybe I could import clients from the Excel spreadsheet I made but some things OCCURRED to me:
1. When clients changed their email address, would we need to re-import every time?
2. There would be a lot of clients, is there a maximum to the number of contacts you can have?
3. There are already people in the Outlook address book to whom we would not want to send our client-intended en masse emails. Is it possible to create a kind of sub-contact list?VBScript can send emails as a standalone module and can read Excel workbooks eliminating any need to import the NAMES and addresses to keep them in sync.

You could also write a VBA macro in either Outlook or Excel. If you get Word involved the easiest way would be to record the macro and make changes as needed. Recording macros usually does not produce the most streamlined code.

Good luck. 8-)Quote

1. When clients changed their email address, would we need to re-import every time?
Either that, or just update Excel and Outlook separately if such changes seldom occur.

Quote
2. There would be a lot of clients, is there a maximum to the number of contacts you can have?
No.

Quote
3. There are already people in the Outlook address book to whom we would not want to send our client-intended en masse emails. Is it possible to create a kind of sub-contact list?
Yes. Here's an online tutorial that should be helpful: http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC011036431033
Okay, thanks so far. If there's no maximum to the number of contacts, I'm CURRENTLY looking to just use the Outlook contacts feature and make our clients a distribution group. However I know that when I put this to my boss he's going to ask how all of us on the network can have this contact list. When I go to File -> Share (Outlook 2000 and click on Contacts I get "The command is not available. See the program documentation about how to use this extension."

The second thing I tried was to save my distribution list, as a .txt file. I then went to "Import" -> From another program or file -> Tab separated values.

I went to another computer on the network and imported the contacts, which was fine, but I was only able to import them into that computer's "Contacts" folder, and not as a separate sub-folder of "Clients" or as a distribution list as I had had it on my machine. So again the other users would have the problem of not being able to select all the clients to send an email to, and the only way would seem to be brute force of individually selecting each contact which is obviously time consuming, or asking for it to always be done from my machine.

Sorry to ask- but, any further thoughts? From a page in the online tutorial to which I posted a link in my previous post: "If you use Microsoft Exchange Server, you could share your Contacts folder with your coworkers." You need to have Microsoft Exchange Server installed in order to share Contacts or Calender in Outlook.

To get your Contacts copied over to other computers, I believe exporting to a .PST file instead of a .txt file will work better. In other words, I believe exporting to a .PST file and then importing that file on another computer will allow carrying the FOLDERS over to the other computer and not simply import all Contacts into the Contacts folder.

To export to a .PST file, go to File, Import and Export, select Export to a file, select Personal Folder File (.pst), click Next, expand the Contacts folder by clicking on the plus sign next to it, select the specific folder in the Contacts, and complete export. Then, import that into other computers.

I'm not absolutely sure but I believe exporting to .PST will also allow you to carry Distribution Lists over.

Solve : Batch File - Start Program?

Answer»

I'm having some difficulty getting a small maintenance batch file to call a program that I downloaded that ALLOWS the defragmenter to RUN automatically on Windows 2000 machines. The program will add a key to the users registry that I found on Kelly's Korner to speed up the Disk Cleanup utility on PCs with the NTFS file system. It will then add another set of keys to the registry that are created as a result of running Cleanmgr/sageset:111. Rather than run sageset on every user's PC I just exported the keys that were created on my PC and will call the registry edit in the batch file. It will then run sagerun:111. FINALLY it should call this disk defragmenter program. Here's the problem:

It won't run the disk defragmenter program.
All of the registry EDITS and this program (autodefrag.exe) are located in a folder here:
G:\Installations\One Two Core Programs\Basic Maintenance\Disk Cleanup\autodefrag.exe

On my computer the G drive is a mapped network drive. Initially the batch file wouldn't engage the registry edits. When I added QUOTATION marks at either end of the path the problem was solved. This isn't working for the AutoDefrag program though.

I have run AutoDefrag by clicking on it and calling it in the batch file from these locations:

Desktop
C:
G:
G:\Installations
G:\Installations\One Two Core Programs

After that it stops.

I plan on scheduling the batch file to run this rudimentry maintenance on approximately 50 workstations until such time that the budget allows me to get a network defragmentation program and a pc maintenance utility (not really sure what's out there for this anyway). The G: drive is a common drive that everyone has access to. The rest of the path is preferred.

Question: How do I get this program to run from the preferred location (above). This was my command in the batch file:

start G:\Installations\One Two Core Programs\Basic Maintenance\Disk Cleanup\autodefrag.exe

Thanks very much for the help,

Po

Solve : EA Link... Downloading problems?

Answer»

I have the Electronics Arts Downloading program, i have Downloaded it and installed it... i have an account and can access it easily

The PROBLEM is when i try to DOWNLOAD the games i have paid for, as it continually SAY 'We're sorry, your session has ended', i have a good internet connection (10mbps Belkin G54 Wireless... i THINK) and its quite stable. i can download free trailers and patches... but not anything i have paid for, that being Battlefield 2142 Northern Strike I even tried to purchase it again in case the Pre-paid code had a problem ( i originally bought it off Amazon.co.uk).

Frankly i think that the idea of buying a piece of paper in a BOX is ludicrous, but most of the servers i see are running Northern Strike , I would prefer a Disk with the program on it To be honest.

The reason im posting this here is that ive paid for the game already and i want to play What does Electronic Arts have to say about this....have you contacted them ? ?ive tired e-mailing them etc... and so far they have just ignored me so...

their help section is of no help... thats why im bringing this issue to you guys

Solve : Another pain in the *censored* question...?

Answer»

Okay my questions are a pain in the *censored*. Here it goes. Most of us know about nero alcohol deamon tools ect. If you don't know what those are then more than likely you may not be able to respond to this, not in anyway meaning to be rude, yes they emulate the drives which you mount your isos and many other formats of virtual cd's / dvd's. Certain games, in my case civilization 4 wont play unless you have the cd in. To me thats a pain. I perfer to make ISO files and mount them. Why are games able to read these disks and tell if they are fake or not?

If this is simply a matter of it looking at the pc and it saying hey this is a fake drive is it possible (going out there unlike my last question that I knew was very much possible) to mount an image itself on a regular drive without anything being in the drive. If spun up have it send a false positive ect. Granted for things like this there are cracks ect. I'd rather insert the disk instead of getting a virus. Perhaps a virtual cd rw that reverts the command codes to the location of the iso files or what? Unless I'm wrong in why they won't be read completely. But im talking about using some of the most advanced DVD and CD Copying software out there. Thank you for your time and your input ill be standing by.Sorry as i was going through this i SAW i may not have been perfectly clear umm what i mean is no cd "drive" emulation simply loading isos into your drive that exists without a cd.... Yeah... sounds stupid to some of yall prob does to me too. There are freeware apps that will do this...INCLUDING Alcohol 52%

Stop by majorgeeks.com or check the link in Rob's sig...I just noticed you already mentioned free alternatives in another thread that is older than this ?

My question would be why ask queastions you already have the answers to ? ?I'm not SURE what you're asking. He wants to load an .iso (the worst possible disc image?) onto a PHYSICAL optical drive using software. That way, the "disc is in the drive" and the drive would physically spin, but he doesn't have to actually have the disc.

Sounds like it wouldn't work. I'd like it to, though, since Blackhawk Down won't play without my disc in.

-rockActually he's talking about setting up a virtual drive on the HDD to run a CD program...
This is what Daemon Tools and the like are designed to do.sorry i have been busy for a while. I've been working 16 hour days for several days straight. Okay most of you are thinking im asking for something like deamon tools and alcohol 120 or 52 ect. I have used those programs since they have came out i know what those are. Rockerest is the CLOSEST one to understanding what i mean. There are several games that i own including TITAN Quest that need the actual DVD in the drive. If you make an ISO file and you run it it will not work because of the fact that it looks to see if it is a real DVD or CD drive or an emulated drive. Im not looking to make my cd rom drive sit there and spin with nothing in it while really reading an iso file. What im looking for is basically masking software that would make your pc really truely not be able to tell the diff between it being a CD/DVD drive or an emulated Drive. Does anyone have any ideas on where to start.

Solve : Don't know what to do!?

Answer»

Ok, so it started yesterday when I installed TELUS Security Service. It seemed to install fine, but when I logged back in after restarting my computer, it said "Telus security service is initializing..." and stayed like that for hours; it didn't do anything. Also, my taskbar is frozen, it just shows an hour galss when I move the cursor over it.
In control panel, I cannot open "system" or "taskbar and start menu"
I went to "add/remove programs" and tried to remove it, but it didn't do anything when I clicked "change/remove"
If I try to restart my computer, when it gets to the screen that says "saving your preferences" (or something like that) it freezes. So the only WAY to restart my computer is to push the power button.
Not all the time, but most times I turn my computer back on it gets to the log-in page , quickly flashes a blue screen that says something about a problem being detected and to make sure new soft/hardware is installed correctly.

Then I thought, ok I will just start it in safe mode. So as the computer was starting up, I PUSHED F8. It took me to the screen where you can select safe mode, but it was FROZEN!

Next I thought I WOULD try a system restore, but when I clicked on it, nothing happened!

Now I am completely stuck, and don't know what to do next. I would REALLY appreciate it if ANYONE could help me!I would retry safe mode and try and remove that security software.
But be patient with safemode...sometimes if it hasn't been used in awhile it can take awhile to load completely...

We have a full listing of security programs that are not only some of the best but also free.

It doesn't sound like their security solution is niether.I've got it working again; thanks for your help!

Solve : Digital Camera Help?

Answer»

I have a Kodak Dx3900 digital camera and I have been uploading my photos to quickpix. I don't know how but something changed and now I can't upload my photos.

I have gone into quickpix

Disk/directory/card
to
Card setup
to
Path to photos - Browse

When I browse my computer I can't find my camera or files.

My digital cameras says that the directory is

Directory:\DCIM\101k3900

I can't find any DCIM files on my computer.

I downloaded the original Kodak software in case I had deleted a file but that didn't do anything. I even downloaded a new Kodak drive (not SURE why) but that won't open and says it can't find the camera and to check if the camera is plugged in and on. It is. I never changed anything with regards to my camera.

How can I get my photos out of my camera and into quickpix? Help, and thanks. Are you using Windows XP?

If you're not seeing your camera in My Computer when it's connected to your computer and turned on, you need to resolve that problem first. Indeed, that may be the sole problem here; once you get that resolved, you can probably upload photos again.

You connect your camera to a USB port, right? Have you tried different ports? Do you have other USB devices? Can you use other USB devices on your computer, and on the port you normally use for your camera? Can you connect your camera to another computer to see whether it's RECOGNIZED by that computer? You don't need to install the software for this; just connect it and see whether the computer recognizes a device connected to the USB port.

Thanks for the reply. I was ABLE to get my photos into my computer using the Kodak software. I must just have the incorrect path set for quickpix.

Thanks again.

Solve : Video recording software.?

Answer»

Does anyone know of some good free video recording software? Rob has some good suggestions for audio in his FAQ, but there isn't really anything for video. I'm using a Sony Digital Handycam DCR-TRV250 NTSC. It came with its own video recording/editing software, but I have no idea what happened to the CD, and I can't get a free replacement. I've been trying to use Windows Movie Maker, but it just doesn't cut it. Everything turns out very, very dark and when I TRY to brighten it, it doesn't look natural at all (it looks too hazy).

I have a trial for Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 (I'm hoping it hasn't expired yet), but I can't get it to recognize my camera for some reason.

I really want to get some of these videos onto my computer, so I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, guys.I've never used this but it looks interesting: ZS4 Video Editor @ http://www.zs4.net/Thanks, soybean, I'm DOWNLOADING it right now.SnagIt 8 is an awesome SCREEN recording program. It's not free though. My mum got it for something....cant remember. I use it to make video tutorials of random stuff like how to create a custom icon for a USB Memory Stick and batch commands and stuff.ZS4 is one of the most confusing programs I have ever used. That thing is not user-friendly at all. And from what I can tell, it's solely for editing, not recording. I couldn't find any recording options, nor do the help files make any mention of it.

Well, what I need is something that will export videos from my camera onto my computer. That does sound like a useful program, though; just not what I need at the moment. Is your OS Windows Media Center Edition, as mentioned in your signature block? What does your computer do when you connect your camera? I don't have a video camera but I'm surprised your OS won't do this without any third-party software, just as my Win XP Pro opens an Explorer window when I connect my digital camera.

Also, does the MANUFACTURER of your camera provide any software, maybe something you could download from their website? Did the camera come with any software?1. Yes, I do have Media Center. I think the only think specific to this version (that I've noticed) is that it's compatible with TV tuners and has the Media Center program for organizing media files.

2. When I PLUG in my camera, it just makes the noise to indicate that a USB device has been attached. I think it doesn't do anything else because it hasn't been synced with any software.

3. I can use the software included on my computer (Windows Movie Maker), but the quality is very poor.

4. I looked for the software once before (I can't remember the name at the moment), only to find out that I would have pay something like $50 for a replacement CD. The software isn't supplied by Sony, so they don't have free replacements.

5. The camera did come with software (I'm going to try to have to find out what it's called again), but I have no idea what happened to my original CD's. I've searched all over my house for them.Virtual Dub

Not sure it will fit your needs but does some of what your Adobe program will do...Thanks, patio. I'm having a bit of trouble getting this to do what I want (I want a bigger-sized video with decent quality that isn't 100's of MB for only a few seconds), but if I mess around with it a bit more, I might be able to get it to work out. Thanks for the suggestion.

If anyone else has any other suggestions for me to try out, I'm still open.

Solve : scroll bars in Word?

Answer»

Greetings to all...

I may be a bit pedantic with this but here goes.

I have my MS "Word" open and then click the "open" button. What is really annoying me is the fact that the vertical scroll bar is always half way down the track and my carefully numbered files are not visible in the file list window; ie, those at the top. I am pretty sure that this can be SET somehow to always open with the scroll bar at the top, but try as I might I cannot find the way.

I have files within files and not all of them have the bar half way down when I open them??!!

Any clues about how to rectify this folks?

Thanks in advance to all who read and reply...
Can you provide a screenshot please? That will help to clarify what you're referring to.Hi Rob.

The attached zip file has two PICS. The first shows the scroll bar at the bottom of the track and the SECOND pic shows the scroll bar at the top AFTER I push it up. It's only a minor movement but I have to move it up every time I click the "open" button.

The files I mostly use are the trading files shown at the top of pic 2, after I move the bar up.

That "desktop.ini" thing at the bottom, is that the problem maybe??Quote

That "desktop.ini" thing at the bottom, is that the problem maybe??

I don't know but do you need to use All Files for Files of type? Try changing it to Word Documents and see whether the behavior of the Open panel changes.
There is a slight confusion with the terms you are using here. A "file" is a document or single item. A "FOLDER" contains files and/or other folders.

The problem you have is that the Office dialogue boxes automatically scroll to the first real file in any folder. In your case, since you are viewing all files and you are configured to view system and hidden files, "desktop.ini" will be the first file in some of your folders.

I do not know a way of overriding this behaviour, but here's a quick tip: In the dialogue box, press Shift-Tab, to move the selection cursor to the file/folder list. Then press Home to go to the start of folder list. You can use the cursor keys to go up and down the list, Enter to descend into one of the folders, and Backspace to revert to the containing folder. All without touching your mouse.

Hope this helps. You might also find Word's Work menu quite useful. "Word offers a special menu called the Work menu. Located between the Window menu and the Help menu, this menu is designed to STORE a list of your commonly used files. Unlike the recent files list at the bottom of the File menu, Word doesn't add documents here automatically; you must add them manually. If you regularly use the same files, the Work menu saves you a trip to the Finder. Just select your document from the Work menu and get to work."

For more, see Make Your Own Menu in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint (source of above quote).

Here's another reference, http://addbalance.com/word/workmenu.htmHi again Rob and Soybean...

Rob, Re: "In your case, since you are viewing all files and you are configured to view system and hidden files, "desktop.ini" will be the first file in some of your folders."

This has given me the clue as to what I have done. I remember now that I clicked "show hidden files" some time ago just to see what it does and what files are lurking around inside the PC. I have now clicked "do not show hidden files" and my problem has disappeared.

Soybean, I have had a look at those two references you offered. They are very intersting and I have added them to my favorites, thanks.

My learning of computers has now advanced with the help this wonderful forum.

Thank you gentlemen......

Solve : Outlook Calendar Reports?

Answer» HELLO,
I was wondering if anyone knoew if it is possible to report on a public folder shared calendar? Users make changes to appointments they shouldn't and I need to know what's CHANGED, who did it and when. Any ideas?
thanksFirst thing you need to do is review the permissions for the folder in question. Secondly, to view all of the extra data for the appointment, open the appointment, and then go to Tools-->Forms-->Design this form. Click the All Fields tab. Use the "Select from" drop-down list to view the various hidden fields. The Mail fields may give you an INDICATION of who last sent an appointment change. I haven't found a "MODIFIED by" field, but a VBA wiz may be able to TELL us if such a field is accessible.thanks Rob, the 'modified by' field is a good place to startYou might also have a look at Exchange's logs - although that might be a needle in a haystack job.

Just for fun, have a look at some of the command line switches for
arc .

v is for verbose listing of files. Can't hurt to try it and see what it says.

t is for testing archive. What results when you try that?

c is INTERESTING. "convert entry to new packing method"
