Solve : have no clue wat to do...windows media player?

Answer»

Ok, a little while ago my windows media player stopped playing videos. I have no clue why and have no clue how to fix it. When I play a video like open the video file, it has the sound, the problem is it doesnt have any picture. Its just a black screen. When I maximize it, it still has a black screen. It will never change.
And so I tried using Quicktime player and it doesnt show picture also. It will always play the sound but not the picture. I use a software to transfer video formats (mpg to 3gp for my mp3 player) and it usually gives me a preview if i want. Well i can view the videos there with sound also just not in windows media player and in quicktime.
Can someone PLEASE help? Ive even tried downloading new video files to try and they still dont work. I have a pentium4, 512 ram, 40gb hd, windows xp, new video card (WORKED with the new video card for quite sometime)What kind of virus and spyware protection? What codecs are you using? Alan <>< :-) As I said in my first post: windows xp, yes it did work before, im not sure wen it started happening exactly i think about 2-3 months ago.
I have service pack 2 installed, had it installed before this started happening, and some "programs" installed that im not sure of are: MSXML 4.0 SP2 (2 different updates for it), MSXML 4 Parser, Mircrosoft .NET Framework 1.1 . If you need anymore info just ask =) Thanks everyone for helpingI'm afraid we need Dr. Patio at this time. What is dr patio? =SDoes anyone have a suggestion to try? Red flag. You need to be legit. Perhaps Microsoft has nailed you.Or maybe it was just a crappy cracked version and got all corrupted. Either way, GX1 is right.Delete it reinstall it this would help in any case.

Solve : HP Printer Problem?

Answer»

Quote

i may not be able to figure how to FIX it but i aint stupid lol....
A simple "yes" would do...

Do you have access to another printer that you can CONNECT to your laptop and then try printing to from your PC?no sorry......Are there any older versions of the drivers that you could try?not that i am aware of...You may need to ask HP that question; they don't seem to make older drivers available for public download.

Still, the puzzling thing is that it neither works through USB nor over SMB (file & printer sharing). That doesn't SOUND like a hardware problem. Mind you, we cannot verify that you network is set up correctly to allow printer sharing and can only take your word for it.

Actually, could you try printing over the LAN again, with all software firewalls temporarily disabled?WELL i have it going through my wireless router, i will try lan asapQuote

Solve : Microsoft Office 2000 wont start!!!?

Answer»

I was looking around with TweakUI on my Windows 98 SE computer.
I clicked onto the ADD/REMOVE tab.
Tweak UI allows you to remove entries from the Add\Remove list in the control panel.

So I'm thinkin - i wont be uninstalling Microsoft Office 2000, so i removed it from the list.
And now every time I start up my computer (start up folder contains ms office) or try to open word, excel, OUTLOOK, etc. it comes up with the following message:

"This application must be installed to run. Please run Setup from the location where you originally installed the application. "

Note: I dont have the cd-rom which office was installed from. It came pre-installed on the computer.

Is there something i can type in the start>run menu such as rundll or regsvr, etc. so i can use office again?
Are you absolutely sure that's the way TweakUI was supposed to work? Can cite a reference confirming that? I think your Office 2000 has been uninstalled. So, if you want to have Office 2000, I suggest you head for ebay.I think you hosed it also. Powerful utilities should not be played with if you don't know what you are doing. Windows 98 has no system restore, so no luck there either.Quote

No, office hasnt been uninstalled. All the program files are still there. All tweakUI does is remove part of the registry so that the program doesnt show in the list of add/remove programs in the control panel.

Using tweakUI, once you select the program and click remove it says:
"You will not be able to uninstall this program if you remove it from the add/remove list.
Remove the entry anyway?"

There is one way which I MIGHT be able to solve this problem. Along with the Remove button in the add/remove tab in TweakUI, there are also New and Edit buttons.

Could someone using microsoft office 2000 (and windows 98, 95, NT, ME or 2000) install tweakUI, click on the add/remove tab, highlight Microsoft Office 2000 and click edit. It will come up with an option to edit the name and the uninstall action of that program. Then copy and paste the action of MS office 2000 into this forum.

I could then use that and click on new in the add/remove tab and create a new entry. Chances of it actually working... i would say 50%.

nope, tried that and it just comes up with the same message
I have looked at TweakUI since your original post and I agree it's supposed to do what you say about removing items from the Add or Remove Programs list without actually removing the program. But, the fact is your program now does not work. So, whatever you did with TweakUI, or something else you did but haven't mentioned or simply aren't aware of, has made Office 2000 inoperable, and I think the only way you're going to GET it back is to buy the program.

Nope, soybean.

The registry keys that put a program in the add/remove dialog are the same ones that tell the executables that the program is correctly installed. Everything is still there except those keys. cam_s1 had a decent idea.

Solve : OEM vs. Retail?

Answer»

I have been shopping the AUCTION sites in hopes to save some money on my first build. What is the differance between an OEM version of software and Retail, such as an operating system. Is buying such ITEMS from an auction site even a good idea?Mainly it's in the licence. Have a read:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=difference+between+OEM+and+retail&btnG=Google+Search&meta=I think this link, from that Google search Rob posted, is a good read: The difference between OEM and Retail when buying computer components; it gives reason for caution in buying OEM.Quote

If for example, you are SPEAKING of OEM XP v. Retail XP the nutshell difference is this :

OEM was originally meant for system builders and is intended to live and die on its original box. MS doesn't supply support, the system builder is supposed to.
To qualify for this version, resellers were supposed to sell a piece of "internal hardware" with the OEM copy.
Savvy bargain hunters buy this version routinely and sometimes (not often) it even comes with a funky "internal part" !

Retail XP allows for the OS to be migrated to other boxes, as long as it is installed on only one box at any one given time.
MS support is included...whatever that is
Oh, and it comes in a PRETTY, *empty box.
*Which spawned the Missing Manual series.

I would without hesitation buy the OEM version, but on-line auctions require TRUST and a seller with a excellent feedback.
There are other resellers that would be less risky. For hardware components, I might buy OEM unless it was something I had not previously worked with and I wanted instructions that would normally come with the Retail package. OEM parts are just that; parts only. So, if you buy, say, a Western Digital OEM hard drive, you won't get a CD with Data Lifequard Tools on it or instructions on installing the hard drive. So, for hardware components, the buyer's experience is going to be determining factor.

For an OS (Windows), I'd probably buy Retail; why preclude my self from legally migrating that OS to another computer?Quote

I would without hesitation buy the OEM version,

What do you do if you should want to - off in the future - disassemble that computer and build another?

And:
What about if you don't actually trash that computer, but make several changes to it, such that WinXP thinks it is a different computer? What do you do then?

Either of these are reasonable occurrences with hobbiests.

I don't have XP, but am curious how you that do have it handle these situations.

Solve : Cloning?

Answer»

I wish to play musical rearrangement of my HDs. I have four installed (2 SATA, 2 PATA) My boot drive is an EIDE where my OS (WinXP) resides. I have an EMPTY 36G WD Raptor which I want to use as my boot drive. I downloaded a freeware (XXClone) which has the feature to do this however I have some unanswered questions.

After I clone Windows from the source to the target drive, do I have to disable the source drive? I imagine that one cannot have two bootable drives in effect as the same time. Your take on this please. This USUALLY depends on the BIOS boot order which can be CUSTOM set by you....

As to the cloning operation the most successful method is to perform the clone and reset all the drive jumpers appropiately. After doing the clone dis-connect all HDD's except the target drive and do a few cold boots and make SURE everything is working properly.
Then proceed to re-introduce the other drives one at a time with a few cold boots each time and adjust the boot order again if it decides to change.

Tedious i know but the best way...

Good Luck and keep us posted. Thanks for the INPUT. Let me clarify however that the target drive is a SATA while the source is an EIDE, thus the jumper re-arrangement may not be necessary. Specifically, my drives are arranged as follows:

C: drive - Master EIDE (presesntly boot drive containng the OS) 80G
H: drive - Slave EIDE (mostly storage) 80 G
J: drive - SATA (games and storage) 300G
I: drive - Raptor (10K RPM) SATA (previously used for games but now empty and reformatted) 36G

You will have to set the boot order to use the SATA drive first then...

Solve : Can't find Outlook Address book or wrong perm??

Answer»

Had to reinstall XPPro and OFFICE 2003. Had copy of HD still. Moved file over to new OUTLOOK with emails (file was supposed to have .pst extension but didn't) with no problems and can view old emails. I did a search for .pab (address book files) files on my old HD but none were found. Found a file in old outlook (not .pab but I think its the right one) and moved it to new outlook. I now have old names and emails in my contacts but when I try to access the address book or use address book to send new mail I get a message that says "can't find the file or wrong permission" I have GIVEN myself full control to that file. Does the program or system need PERMISSIONS.

Solve : some programs won't uninstall?

Answer»

When I try to uninstall some programs-either though "add/remove programs" or through their own uninstall in the programs list- I receive one orf two error messeges:

file"C\WINDOWS\unins000.dat" does not exist. Cannot uninstall.

or a small window opens with the HEADING " Ghost Installer" , which states "Installation LOG file not found" and an "OK" button.

How can I uninstall these and/or is there a fix so this doesn't occur any more?

Also --- When I go to a site to re-download a program that I downloaded from there before , the download is almost complete and stops, with the message "cannot download connection with the server was reset." I have tried another download location and several times over the last month. No reply when I e-mailed them about the problem.
The application is registered and payed for (I've used it for several months).

I would appreciate any advice on one or both of my dilemmas. Thankyou.

In such cases, one solution is to reinstall the program and then try uninstalling it from Windows Add or Remove Programs panel.well, the first and the easiest way is to run system restore (start-programs-accessories-system tools) and restore ur system before u've installed/downloaded ur unneeded apps.
But it's SOUNDS like u've some mall/spyware.
AOL is a free antivirus, all u need to do is just to register email with aol.com domain.

or u could just scan ur PC with some TOOL (AOL is also possible and doesn't need to be downloaded).try googleing for ccleaner and using the TOLLS section to uninstall it

Solve : Backup software used/suggestions?

Answer»

What is a good (low cost) back-up solution that you use, and why do you like it?

I need to backup my files soon (as they should have been done long ago), and I want a good, fast, and easy to use system that is dependable and not too expensive. Also, is it better to use removable media (disc/tape), or buy an external hard drive for this? I have two computers, one with two hard drives (360 GIG total), and one with 120 GIG. I can restore all software programs (less updates) from disc media, by client DATA is what I need to safeguard.

Thanks for any suggestions.I have always found NTBackup to work quite well. NTBackup runs at a reasonable speed, is free and it meets my NUMBER one priority of being idiot-proof. (XP Home users need to manually install NTBackup from the ValueAdd directory on the install disk)

NTBackup does not work with CD or DVD media but is great with an external disk. It's EASILY scheduled on the Windows scheduler and can be run from a command or script file. One nice feature is the the backup catalog can be recreated from the backup should it become corrupt or lost.

Commerial programs can be found with Google. Cobian makes a free backup.

Note: NTBackup is known as Backup on Win9x machines.

Good luck. 8-)Quote

Yeah, go figure. Microsoft was never known to be consistent. And I use Acronis True Image Corporate Workstation.
I like it cause it's rather cheap for utility that can backup/restore/clone/create bootable disk over network.
Also, i've used Universal Restore feature to restore on bare-metal my full system(even OS and drivers).
anyway, check that outOK - I used the windows system tools- Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to back up my drive to an external drive because I need a new hard drive. However, when I look at my external drive, I can't see the files. Are they hidden somehow? How do I check that they have actually transferred? You can try a test restore. You can do the restore to a file and make sure your stuff is there. Make sure you backup system state if you want your windows CONFIG on your new HDQuote
What is a good (low cost) back-up solution that you use, and why do you like it?

Check out Syncback:

Free.
Simple.
Does not use proprietary compression. Uses plain old Zip files.
In other words, having and using Syncback is not required to get your data back.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SyncBack.html

Cobian was mentioned above. You can read about it, and download it here:

These programs are nice for backing up to another hard drive - internal or external.

"...is it better to use..."

"Better" depends on lots of things.
Speed.
Ease of use.... which often translates into frequency of use.
and so on...

A tape drive, with appropriate software can be very dependable.
IF it is used regularly.
One method, for example, would be to purchase seven tapes. Rotate them daily, one for each day of the week.
Have the backup run via scheduling software, - daily.
Now you've got daily backups, and if a tape should fail just when you need it, the worst case is that you've lost only the last 24 hours of data.
This method is not the least expensive though.
And you need to buy new tapes regularly. They wear.

Hard drives:
Internal or external - they are machines with moving parts, so eventually they wear out and die. So, if you are backing up to a hard drive, you are really just hedging your bet that your daily WORKING drive and your backup drive do not fail at the same time.
For many people, this is fine. Depends on your situation. You get to decide.

Even if you use something like Syncback with another hard drive, you should get yourself on some sort of schedule to burn the backed up data to CD. For most of us, burning to CD is a pain in the *censored* because we have to track down the most recent copy of our data, for each app we want to back up. At least using something like Syncback makes that simple. Set Syncback up once and it takes care of that part. You come along once a week or month or whatever suits you, and simply burn the backed up data that is all stored already for you. You don't have to go find each piece.

Solve : Excel Formatting Question?

Answer»

Hey guys.

For my dissertation I'm trying to do a CHART. I've been trying this for hours. It's now 3:15 am so I beg for help!

OK I'm using MS Excel 2003. What it is I want to enter data in a MINUTES:seconds FORMAT. In format/cells I've tried the custom/mm:ss format but if I enter data (e.g 02:15) then Excel assumes 15 is the minute value and auto changes it to that:

Am I doing something obviously wrong? Any input appreciated. Thanks. If you to go Format, Cells, Time, and select the 13:30:55 format and then enter 0:2:15 in the CELL, will that WORK for you? Be sure to enter a zero as the first part of time; in other words, enter 0 for hours. Ah yeah that works thanks.

Is there a way to get rid of the 'hours' part display though? :-/Let's go back to the Custom format you were originally using and try entering hh:mm:ss (i.e. hours, minutes, and seconds) even though the format is mm:ss. If you enter all three elements, Excel will only display the minutes and seconds. Let me know if that works for you.soybean that has worked a treat. Thank you so much!

I'll probably be back with questions on my barcharts later! Thanks again.

Solve : No Win Live Msger after moving router around??

Answer»

Hiyas there.

Today i had to move my router to ANOTHER room in order to allow more people to plug in.

However, Windows Live Messenger isn't working ANYMORE. XFIRE works, Internet works...
As if that wasn't enough, the computers can't really "find eachother" over the network. Games can be played over the LAN, but we can't browse around and view shared folders.

Any help with anything is appreciated.

Thanks!Check for faulty cabling first, since nothing else seems to have changed.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/xpmanaged/26_xpmsg.mspx

Well it might and i use the term might strongly be a port forwarding problem going to that website will tell you the individual ports for various things. Also make sure that your computers ip address isn't changed like if you go through one router its usually 192.168.0.X
if going through two routers it should say its 192.168.1.X basically go to start menu run type cmd hit enter dos like screen pops up type ipconfig then hit enter TOP one is you 192.168.0.1 Is your outermost router innermost is under DEFAULT gateway. Umm also make sure your firewall isn't blocking it ect. Had a problem with that when using a SGB900 Surfboard and a linksys router in line. I felt like i should have known that would happen.

Solve : Incorrect Msdos version - Can't run windows????

Answer»

Hello,

First post on here and its a problem:-

Attempted to update my dads computer from Windows 98 to ME off a CD which was given to me some years AGO. When I updated my own computer (again some years ago) I used this disk and all went well, I ran ME until I updated to a genuine XP programme.

Having hit setup.exe all went well until I popped out of the room and LEFT my dad in charge of it. During installation it somehow froze and I had to re boot, he may have pressed some buttons I'm not sure....

Now when I switch the computer on the following error messages appear on the screen:-

C:\>mode con codepage select = 850
incorrect msdos version

C:\>keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys
bad command or file name

C:\>

This version of Windows runs only on MS-DOS 8.00

C:\>

This SEEMS to indicate to me that its trying to boot up ME but cant because the MS DOS version is 7 or similar (off the WIN 98 OS)

Have just downloaded 98 and ME boot DISKS off BOOTDISC.com

Question is what do I do now? am I on the right lines or have I lost everything on the computer? Which boot disk do I use and then what do I do?

Hope someone can help :-?The first thing you would want to do is hook up that HDD as a slave on a known working machine and save any data that they don't want to lose...
After that do a format and clean install of WinME...Thanks for that, anyone else out there have any other ideas? That's the best idea. What is wrong with that? Why the hesitation? Not over confident with computers...

Assume I will have to re set jumpers to be able to slave the HD onto my computer?

ALSO, if i do that what will I see re the contents of the slaved HD? what files will I need to save if I want to keep email addresses etc?

:-?When your format a drive all data on it is lost. Basically any documents or files you wish to keep you will need to store else where. If they are small you could try a floppy disk. Email address and passwords you will need to remember.Setting the jumpers and putting it into a known working machine are relatively easy...google has pictures you can review for the process. It would be best to have a burner on that machine so you can save all the data to a CD/DVD.
If you need more assistance on how to back up certain items please post a list of what exactly you need so we can assist further...Have tried to format the hard drive by the command 'format C:/s' as per the help file on this website.
Still get the error message 'incorrect dos version' so I cant even format the HD.

Cant boot it up with a ME or 98 boot disk and if I try to switch to the CD drive it cant find that either.

If I buy a new HD and hook it up will I be able to load ME on it somehow?Where are you getting the bootdisks from ? ?
These should work.
Try bootdisk.com DLoad the WinME bootdisk and follow the instructions.from bootdisk.com, read another thread which explained about how to load them onto floppies (as opposed to copying them) but the comp wont boot..Try again with cleanly formatted floppies...something has gone wrong. You may need to alter the boot sequence in your bios to boot from the floppy drive first.

Recently I downloaded a WinRAR file through Bitcomet(a 350MB video). The file/archive is made of up several smaller Folders(25 in total), each one containing a part of the video. Usually when I extract it FIXES them all together and I can watch the video easily.

But when I went to extract this PARTICULAR file, I received an error message

".part25.rar: CRC failed in rome.202.hdtv.proper.xvid.notv.avi. The file is corrupt"

"part25.rar: Unexpected END of archive"

I just cant seem to get it to open. Ive tried "repairing" it but with no effect. I have downloaded it TWICE but both with the same error.

One thing I have noticed though, is that all the files are exactly 15mb each apart from the last file (.25) which is only 3mb. Im sure I read somewhere that the files all have to be the same size...

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

The file is corrupt on their part(The people that are seeding), not yours. Sorry it's just a problem your GOING to have to deal with.

8-)fffreak*censored*, that sucks thousands of other people will end up downloading a corrupt file...Although I did look around and find a whole media file instead so no extracting You get what you pay for...

I'm sure that's not the only corrupt file out there in cyberspace.

Solve : doc to jpg?

Answer»

Hello.
I need to CREATE a banner for advertizing. The banner currently exists in WORD but I must convert it to FLASH, jpg or gif format (dimension of 420x54 pixels and not more then 30 kb). Is there a free download program that will convert an MS Office Word document to a jpg? Any advice?
Have you tried the Windows Paint program?Or Irfanview....Sorry Patio but I couldn't figure out Infraview.

Soybean; What Windows Paint program do I need and is it available as a free download?I'm talking about the Paint program that's on all Windows computers. With Win XP, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, and select Paint. Sorry but I don't have it. I did a full search - just not there? Are you using Windows XP? You may neet to install Paint. To do this, go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and click on Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side of the panel. When the Windows Components Wizard opens, you will see Accessories and UTILITIES at the top of the Components list. Click on the Details button, select Accessories, Click on Details again, and check the box for Paint (scroll down if necessary). Click OK, and OK.Got it!!! A million thanks! I've created a lovely banner that should do the TRICK! I owe you big time (the site owner would have charged me $75 to create it for me!). Again, thank you!

When I went to the Microsoft Vista launch for IT professionals, the professional speaker had ETrust Antivirus on his demo computer.

On my Vista RC-1 hard copy there were free TRIALS of eTrust and IIRC, Bitdefender.
So I suppose one could say, eTrust was an early Vista partner.

On this machine, I have AVG, AVG-AS (Ewido) and Sygate .
Spybot, SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster are also in the mix.
Sygate hasn't been supported for some time now, as it was purchased by Symantec.
I like Sygate but I will move to Kerio or Comodo when the time comes.

One little gadget that I've bee playing with is McAfee SiteAdvisor.
It's a tiny, free utility that reports on the relative safety of various websites as you browse.
It has its detractors, but I've been finding it useful and very light.

The group above have been keeping me safe for a long time and the whole package is surprisingly light.
IMHO, it really boils down to what you do and how careful you go about it.

Solve : Convert Dynamic to Basic disks in Windows XP?

Answer»

Hello,

I pulled 2 30GB hard drives out of some bad IMACS and PUT them in my Windows XP computer. The problem is I can only make them dynamic disks. I want them to be basic, primary disks so if I EVER format my Windows partiton, I won't lose anything on the dynamic disks. I have tried using the disk management tool in Windows XP, and I tried using disk management through the command prompt also, but they will only recognize as dynamic disks. They have both been formatted through disk management as dynamic.I figured it out. I can't believe how easy it was to fix now. I think Windows couldn't see or delete the MAC partition. So Windows was forcing them to be dynamic. I just zero filled the drives and they work! Yay!

Solve : PhotoImpressions ver.3?

Answer»

I've been using ArcSoft PhotoImpressions version 3 on my computer for a long time and REALLY like it. Some files were lost and the program doesn't WORK like it used to. The problem is that I no longer have the disk and it came as part of a bundle when I purchased my printer. I went to the ArcSoft sight and they no longer offer that version nor will they give any email or phone support for any software older than a year. A friend gave me their disk, but some of the files are unreadable. Another friend told me that if I make a copy of the disk, it is POSSIBLE that all of the files will copy over to another disk and then I could install it. Does anyone have any information that would help me or maybe have the program that they would copy for me? I have tried most of the other versions and I don't like them. It is from 1999. I have no problem with purchasing it, I just need to find it first.
Thank you......You may need to buy it on ebay. Is this it: ArcSoft Photo Impression 3?

Or, use something else. Do you have photo editing software that came with a digital CAMERA? Or, try freeware such as Picassa, IrfanView, GIMP, Paint.net, or Photobie. Google for the links to the sites.Yes, that's the right one and I do have other photo software....I just like that one!! For some reason, the newer versions have fewer capabilities than that one. I'd think they would have more!
Thank you. I'll take a LOOK on Ebay, I didn't even think of that....

Solve : Sorry I need some help (also newb)?

Answer»

I keep opening microsoft word, but it is continually loading a previous document I have created. Please help. Thanks.Microsoft Word 2002Does it automatically load, or is it asking you if you want to load it?

What's the title of the document? Does it have the title you SAVED it as, or does it just say "New Word Document"?Probably the easiest way to resolve this is to do a search on your PC for a file named Normal.dot (note .dot NOT .doc extension) and delete it, when you rebtart Word it will be recreated and you should be back to normal. If you have customizations or preferences saved in your new doc template, i.e. the Normal.dot file, that you don't want to lose, do this instead of deleting it. Open Normal.dot, delete the TEXT, and then click SAVE As, select Document Template (*.dot) for Save as type, and name it Normal.

To open Normal.dot, you'll need to navigate to it or do a search to find it. It's probably in "C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot". Of course, substitute your actual username for username.Alright thanks guys. I'll tell you if it works, the document that keeps coming up is a document I created long ago. It's as if it is a normal document template. Anyways when I open it up I usually just delete the words and START from scratch. I have tried saving it, but since it's a template (or at least i'm pretty sure it is) it's kinda worthless.Re-read my reply. You haven't done what I suggested. If it's not clear, state what point(s) are not clear to you. Thanks I ended up deleting them and word recreated the normal template without the textThanks for posting back. Glad to hear you got it fixed.

Solve : Anti virus scan taking too long?

Answer»

I need some help and advice. PLEASE LET me first explain that I am talking about my father's computer, which is a brand new Dell (Christmas 2006) he is a beginner and far away from me. His friend told him to run his Norton Anti Virus thorough scan because the friend thought the computer was running too slow. After 6 hours only 1/5 of the hard drive had been scanned. Any ideas why and any advice I can relay to my father over the phone?? He had been doing quick scans which showed nothing wrong. He is just learning how to go on the internet, and is very confused. If I was closer than 2000 miles away I would run over there and help him. But the question is, why is it taking Norton so long to do a thorough scan?
Thanks,
~Donna~ Norton does take an inordinate amount of time to scan, but that does seem a long time.
Any idea what size HDD this is?
And any other specs?
I bet the hard drive is fragmented, tell him to stop the scan and defrag, see if that helps it.
Hope this helps.Does the computer seem to be running normal for other tasks? If so, I'm inclined to suggest removing Norton and installing AVG Anti-Virus Free. However, if you feel he would not be able to uninstall Norton and install AVG without help, this might not be a good idea unless you can figure out a way of getting some assistance for him in doing this. And, unfortunately, Norton can be difficult to completely remove. Obtaining a special removal tool from Symantec's (the maker of Norton) website is OFTEN necessary. It's also quite possible there may be background tasks starting on a timed basis which would interrupt the scan and have it start all over again...on the taskbar have him right click any icons there and select Exit. This will SHUT down any background programs.
Then have him start the scan before bed and let it run til it finishes.......or teach him how to start in safe mode and run the scan there. A lot less crap gets loaded in safe mode. And tell him how to turn off the Indexing service. Its a TOTAL resource hog.

Are you downloading older music? Possibly the year is changed on it because it was the year it was made.Now...have the dates changed on music files that were already on your computer? For example: did you have a song that originally said 2004 but now says 1994? Or is it only for new music that you're downloading? Sometimes, whoever you download music from will encode files with the wrong dates. What music PLAYER do you use? Most will let you change the release the dates of music files.ok, sorry

win 98 desktop, i use avg for my random virus checks. and yes, its music that is already on my pc.. when i right checked it before, it showed the date created( aka date downloaded).. now, it shows some other random date.. its only recently that this has happened.. to be honest, no , its not a big deal, just kinda freaking me out

i use winamp, btw, and i dont edit my MP3 tags or w/eok, think i figured it out.. but for some reason, its rearranging them by the date they were "modified", instead of created.. how do i change this BACK?

dont know how they got modified in the first PLACE

Solve : RS232 port?

I have just bought new software for my laptop, it's for DIAGNOSTICS on cars. The software has been configured to use a rs232 (db9) socket on the laptop to conect to the OBD2 on the car, the only THING i have on my laptop is USB's and the 25pin printer port. Is there a way around this?
many thanks.USB to Serial Port connector?I have got the computer conected to the car, its just when i go in to the program an try to comunicate with the car i get a dialog box comming up and asking whitch port i whant to use, i usually get a choice of three ports depending on the program, com1,com2 and COM3 there is nothing there about USB's. would it be possible to get a adapter for it to fit on the 25 pin printer port? and will it work?Regarding the software you bought:
Does it have a webpage? Got any links you can post here?

Is a shareware version downloadable?

...just on the outside chance that somebody might spot something in the config/docs/webpages about how to get your software to point at a USB port instead of a com port.
Yes these are some of them:

http://www.scantool.net/software/scantool.net/index.shtml

http://www.auterraweb.com/dyforwi.htmlIf the software can be configured to use LPT1, you can purchase a parallell to serial converter. Windows has a built in feature that works for printers but I don't know if it would work for your software. It allows output to LPT1 to be redirected to a USB port.Quote

There are several cables on that page.

The USB to Serial converter allows ElmScan interfaces to be used with laptops that do not have a serial port. This product is based on the Prolific Technology PL-2303 USB to serial converter chip. For best results, be sure to download the latest drivers from the Prolific Technology website.

I don't think they'd be selling the cable if it was not possible to use it with their software.
I have not read every word there - maybe I'm mistaken.

This looks to be commercial software only. I did see a place there where you can email them. If this is the software you bought, if it were me I'd expect a reply to an email inquiry.
Have you emailed them and asked?

Btw, the ScanTool software looks to be free. Thank you for mentioning it. I sort of WANTED to find free OBD software, and hadn't put much effort into looking around.

Solve : Strange error??

I GET a strange error ever since i bought my new system.Heres the specs....
2gb Kingston ram
2.6ghz 5200+ amd64 x2
2x geforce 7900 gs on sli

Ever since I got this new system 1/4th of the programs i try fail to load.I bought fear and it wont load.Gunz gets a error but loads.Gunbound doesn't load.Niether does some dl managers for games, and albatross18 doesnt load. And last but not LEAST i get this wierd error aswell? And weatherbug crashes. And so on and so forth any tips?

What kind of protection do you have?avg and zone alarm. But i experienced this problem even when avg was the only protection on the comp

Edit:also when i try to run gunz shortcut to open the site to login it opens my computer instead :-?.I just noticed something I overlooked...you said this has been happening since you bought your system? So, have you been having this problem since day one? Or did it take awhile before these errors started? How long have you had this computer?

Right now, all I can suggest is updating your AVG, rebooting in Safe Mode, and doing a full-system scan. But before doing that, you might want to try going to Start > Run and typing in sfc /scannow. It will likely ask for your Windows XP CD, so make sure you have it.

Also...what's up with that window in the third picture? The one with just an eyeball? Is that one of your games? Its fear(the purchased one) but it wont load and ive had the prob since day one and it got the computer about 4 days ago or so. but the computer guy said i shouldnt have to pay to get this fixed since ive had this prob since he gave it to me.And it is overclocked(to a safe amount i believe)went from 2.6ghz dual core(equals 5200+) to 2.8 ghz(equals 5600+) and the video cards (2 geforce 7900gs on sli) went from 500/690 to 600/800If the machine is 4 days old i would be returning it for a full refund or replacement...Quote

So...the computer was given to you? If you can't get a refund/exchange like patio suggests and you've only had this computer for 4 days, it doesn't sound like you have MUCH to lose by reformatting. Just back up whatever programs and important files you've acquired in the few days and GIVE it a try if my previous suggestion doesn't change anything. Do you have all of the original CD's?And consider not overclocking ANYTHING until you are sure you have a functional machine.Well this wasnt given to me i bought it off newegg.com part for part seprately. Also i dont have the windows cd's since i never needed them i always let a professional fix my comp
Also i unoverclocked my machine but still get the same error Quote

Any ideas on how to fix this?If this is a legit CD, try UNINSTALLING and then reinstalling the software. That is always a good first step. Some ideas about your equipment would be helpful as well. Quote

Also, what do you want to know about my equipment?

Solve : Adobe and AOL issue?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

When I turned on my computer today, I noticed in my task manager that an unknown program was running that wasn't running at all before (I MONITOR my start-up files closely). My brother had used the computer ealier, so I think he was responsible.
The processes belonged to a program called Viewpoint Flash Player. I went to add/remove programs to uninstall it, but the processes were still running. I then went to my program files folders and deleted the last bit of it, which took care of those processes. I noticed that I've had this program since 2005, but today was the first time it was running like that.

After restarting my computer, I opened AOL and got this pop-up asking me if I wanted to install some Adobe program. I selected install, but each time I open AOL for the first time after a restart/turning on the computer, I get that same popup. I'll select install, but it can't do anything since I'm not actually online at that point. After signing on, it still won't install. We also already have Adobe and its updates on the computer, so I don't know why it would pop up like that.
I finally realized there were more options, so I selected 'installed all Adobe products without asking' (or something like that), so the pop-up doesn't show up anymore.

But, I really don't like those settings because I always like to be asked first. Is there any way I can get rid of it and change the settings back? Could uninstalling Viewpoint have something to do with this popup? I'd like to know the cause of it if I can. Thanks in advance!Do you mean Viewpoint Media Player? My Google search finds nothing on "Viewpoint Flash Player".

Quote

Adobe what? Exactly what?

What's the status of Viewpoint in your system now? Installed or not?Yeah, I meant Viewpoint Media Player. Sorry about that. It's uninstalled. AOL works fine without it.

I think it was the Adobe video player of some sort. It would ask to install it every time I load AOL. We already have all Adobe products on our computer, though. There is also a browser flash plugin written by Adobe...this is probably what it was as some web pages need it to load properly...I think we have that on here. I just noticed in the AOL settings that there is a thing you can select to have a warning if Viewpoint is not installed. I wonder if that popup was brought up from that?

As I SAID, though, I wasn't online when the Adobe install popup came up. It's on the sign-on screen.

When the INSTALLATION thing came up, I selected to always install Adobe products, or something like that. Is there a way you can go back and undo that?Do you guys know if Viewpoint is probably the reason I was getting that installation popup? It started to happen right after I uninstalled Viewpoint.
I selected for it to install any Adobe products in the future. Is there a way I can undo that? I like to be asked before installing anything in the future.
Sorry for the annoying questions, guys. I really want to know how to change this, though. There has to be some place on the computer where you can change that, but I can't find it anywhere on the control panel.Although I'm sure you can undo the changes you've made, for the life of me, I can't think of how to do it. But this popup you're getting is very likely related to uninstalling Viewpoint, as it's the graphics engine for a lot of AOL features. I would suggest downloading Viewpoint or even reinstalling AOL if you have to.Quote

Thank you for the link!
Is it very vital for AOL? I don't use AOL much, but my brother is the one who is doing this and brought the problem to my attention.
My brother used AOL this morning w/o Viewpoint and no problems occured. I'm just really confused as to why it would pop up before we even go online.

Does anyone know if Adobe and Viewpoint are SOMEHOW associated with each other?

I'm overly paranoid of computer issues. My last one had to be repaired all the time due to CRAPPY hardware and viruses.
As far as I know, it's not very vital. I think certain things just won't display properly on AOL. I accidentally uninstalled Viewpoint on my old computer once and it caused the login screen to be gray instead of blue (so maybe the graphics on your login screen are screwed up in some way and that's why you're getting the popup). But for the most part, I think things still worked. But I still reinstalled it, just in case.

As for your other question...well, Viewpoint does come installed with certain Adobe products. I'm not sure which ones, though. But there does seem to be some sort of tie-in here.Plenty of info out there: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Viewpoint+Media+Player&btnG=Google+Search

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=373 says, in one post, "It's primary use is to assist with online games, if you do not play them, you can remove it along with WildTangent as well." That same post contained a link to for rnemoval
instructions
.I see. I guess I shouldn't worry about it, then. Thank you for your help, guys!Well, certain things might not perform exactly as they should, but you shouldn't have anything to worry about and I doubt you'll really notice much of a difference.

Solve : .NBZ and NewsBinPro Problem?

Answer»

Hi all. I'm new here, and know relatively nothing about computers. I'm trying to download a movie, but I cannot figure out exactly how to get it to play. It is a .NBZ file. I know that I need a Newsreader, so I downloaded NewsBinPro. I have the file in NewsBinPro, and now it is a .RAR file. I WANT to be able to watch teh video, but am at a complete loss on how I would go about doing it. Can ANYONE GIVE me a walkthrough of playing this file. I would really appreciate any help that you could give me.

Thanks,

JohnCoolRunnin....... Well, you must unrar the file first. Once it's extracted you should be able to play in using News Bin Pro ( if that what it says).
You will need Winrar .... or something similar to unrar that file.

dl65 Thanks for the help. I just downloaded WinRar, but have no idea how to un-rar the file. I open WinRar, and find the file. I click on the file, and get an error saying "This is not a movie file". What am I doing wrong? And I truly apologize for my ignoraance. Computers are beyond my knowledge base.

JohnCoolRunnin ... to extract a rar file ..... once winrar is installed, put your cursor on the rar file , RIGHT click and select extract here ...... it will extract.
When you extracted the file, what is the file extension ? and how large a file is it ?

dl65

dl65, I'm still having problems with it. Let me tell you what I'm doing, and tell me what I'm doing wrong if you can, please.

I download the file to the NewsBinPro program. After it DOWNLOADS, the dialog box comes up, and I click open. That brings me into WinRAR. I click on the file that I want and click the shortcut that says "Extract to". I specify the folder which I want to save the file in, and click "ok." I then go into that folder, and find the file. It is a type NZB file, 102 KB. I double click it, and I get "Error -2048: the file is not a movie file." I am trying to open it in Quicktime. Am I using teh wrong player? Or is it something else?

Thanks for all the help. It's much appreciated.

John

*EDIT*: I changed the "open with" setting to NewsBinPro, and it's still a .RAR file, 304 MB. It seems like I'm going in circles?

JohnCoolRunnin.... lets run through this again..... You downloaded a file from some news service......and it was in .rar file type...... so you installed winrar ...and right clicked on the newsgroup file and selected extract here......... and you end up with another rar file ..only this time its 304 mb ......... so right click on the 304 mb rar file and select ...extract here ...... now what do you have ?

i was wondering is there a way to change .flv files to WMA or avi files
thx if any1 can figure that outhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=flv+to+wma

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=flv+to+avi

Google found all of that in < 1 second
never knew google was such a good source..Always the first place to START. actully im trying to convery youtube videos into avi or wma /media player
playable formatlol, i actually know a better way to get youtube videos from youtube without downloading any software or addons like for FIREFOX. If you go to a video you like on Youtube, copy the URL for the video.
Now go to www.vixy.net and paste the url in the bar. Click convert or something and it will RETRIEVE the video and convert it automatically, although sometimes you might have to change the settings to 'FLA to AVI'
When it's done, you can download your AVI.

Hope this helps for whatever purpose you're using it for.... the site DONT work...yeah, i put www.vixey.bet instead of http://www.vixy.net

Sorry about that.thx works really welllordoftheplat.......
Try the RivaFLVencoder......
http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?encoder&L=3
which is freeware and it’s based on the FFMPEG encoder (normally it is used to create .flv files from .avi or .mpg, but it can do the reverse too).

Google found it in a blink of the eye.
Try it you'll like it.

dl65

carbon dudeoxide it does work but wen it comes to big files ITS SLOWyeah, vixy can be slow for long videos.....
I'm gonna try dl65's one, SEE what that's likedl65, Your one is really slow. The computer usage goes up to 100% and it's sooo hard to do anything else, lol.

Solve : Problem Adobe Photo De Luxe can't uninstall?

Answer»

Hello

I have been using Adobe Photo DeLuxe 3.1 successfully for several years since it was
supplied with my printer. Recently however, when I go to save a photo after editing it the
computer hangs for a long time then I get the message "The browser application
could not be started. Please verify that it is installed correctly." SAVING a photo
has nothing to do with the browser and there are no problems with my Internet
Explorer.

I decided to uninstall Photo DeLuxe and re install but when I try to uninstall
from Add/Remove Programs or from uninstall button on the installation screen on
the CD I get the message "Unable to locate the installation log file 'C:\my
documents\photo editor\DelL1.isu.' Uninstall will not continue".

I know I can delete it from Windows Explorer but that leaves odd files.

I have e-mailed easyphoto support twice but they have declined to answer.

I should be grateful if anyone can ADVISE me.The browser message is probably because it is detecting missing files to run and is trying to phone home...
Have you tried just re-installing it ? ?Hi
I've always understood that a program should always be uninstalled before re installing. Isn't this the case?
Regards.Yes.
However under these circumstances it might be the only way to un-nstall it would be re-installing it as it is missing it's un-installer along with other key files...OK - I will try it
RegardsHi

I've reinstalled it and it is WORKING fine. Many thanks

You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime.

Solve : Default email client doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi
My client is running Outlook 2000 with SP3 and since 3 weeks ago when you go to send a DOCUMENT VIA word or excel etc through the send as attachment it keeps coming up with the message that "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client"

I have done as that and gone through IE Options, Programs and set Outlook as the default email program, but it is still not working....

Anyone help?

Blonde as they come!!!!Might also help if you know that we are accessing outlook via CITRIX.
Also running MDaemon and Exchange. All users having problems no matter wether they using Mdaemon or ExchangeI have no experience with Citrix or MDaemon but, after taking a look at some info on them, I'm inclined to think you've got an unnecessarily complex setup there with the combination of Citrix, MDaemon, and Exchange.

Here's a QUOTE from http://www.altn.com/Products/MessagingSolutions/MDaemon/ : "Outlook users can share Calendar, Task, Contact, Notes, and Journal folders without the expense or expertise required by Microsoft Exchange Server." This implies that MDaemon is an alternative to Exchange. So, why are you using both?

What version of Windows are you using and what version of Citrix? This reference, For: Access Gateway Standard Edition and Access Gateway Advanced Edition, Version 4.5, says,
Known Issues for this Release

1. After installing the beta Secure Access Client on Windows Vista, the client computer might not be able to connect to network resources. If this happens, uninstall the beta Secure Access Client, restart the client computer, and then install the beta Secure Access Client again.

So, I think maybe you need to uninstall Citrix as a first troubleshooting step and see whether resolves the problem. Don't reinstall it until you've tried doing email with it uninstalled. And, if that doesn't work, then you need to DETERMINE whether there's some conflict in using MDaemon and Exchange together.

Solve : floppy software > CD?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I'm kinda messed up here. I got some DOS disk here (DOS 6.2 to be precise) and I need to put the software (which is on three floppys) on a CD. Some friend want me to make him a CD so that its old 486 can run WIN 3.1 ... but he doesnt have a floppy drive . So, can someone help me with that please ?

Thank you in advance,
undead.foxDOS 6.2 is 4 FLOPPIES...you will need all 4 if you want to be able to create an INSTALL CD.Does that 486 boot from CD? Probably not, so it WOULD be cheaper to just buy a floppy drive than try to rig a solution.

Manual was 15.8 MB, so it only took about 40 minutes. That PROBABLY SEEMS like forever for you high-speed GUYS, but it's actually not too BAD on 28.8kbps. HA. Installing this way worked just fine, by the way, and I now have the latest update on my computer.Does seem like forever, that'd be a few minutes for me.
Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

Solve : How can I delete files by date in a batch file??

Answer»

I want to delete all files older than 72 hours in a specific folder on a windows 2003 server to prevent the log files from taking up too much space.

I used to write batch files like this, and I can't even parse it any more. Where is a good place to learn batch files today? Not that many people use them any more.

This is the command I REMEMBER, but can't parse:
FOR %%F IN (*.*) DO (
IF %%~zF LSS 1 DEL %%F
)

This deletes files less than 1 (byte or kb, not sure anymore) in size. I would need to find something similar by dates.

Back in the days I was PROGRAMMING (I am working on getting there again after a 15 year hiatus), I could write elaborate batch programs. I don't have the books any more, but need to find a way to clear the files from the log, or disable logging until after the problem has occured, and hopes it happens again. I would PREFER to leave the logging on.

Solve : Itunes media player 7 Skipping!?

Answer»

I have a PAIN in the problem with itunes player. the thing keeps Skipping when i play music? I've tried UNINSTALLING it and reinstaling, deleting music and then doing a new import, but doesn't make a bit of difference. i don't know if the skipping would transfer to a ipod as i am PROBABLY the only person on the planet that doesn't own a mp3 player

looking into buying one, but want excellent sound quality over everything else. i've heard the Sony NW-HD5 or iaudio m3?

any recomendations? thanks, ajay Try defragmenting your hard drive, your music may be in fragments.
Any other problems with the computer?
Can other media players play the music without skipping? And clean up the language we have visitors of all ages pass through here...I have no other problems with the computer, might be a bit on the slow side when booting up. and Media Player is fine. ( media player 11)Hey.

I downloaded iTunes 7 a few times and I kept getting 'choppy' playback. The music was unlistenable. Since then I added more ram, a new graphics card and a new sound card (which I would've done regardless). Thought I'd give iTunes 7 another go but.... more skipping! Check the iTunes forum:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=800
My suggestion is install iTunes 6

If you don't buy an iPod you don't need to USE iTunes. You could use WMP or WinAmp as your media player.

I just formatted my laptop (Acer Aspire) with windows xp (with service pack 1) and now as soon as I turn it on and the desktop loads, it freezes. I cannot do anything.

Do I need to download this stuff and install it? How WOULD I do this- could I download it from another computer onto a usb and install it in safe mode? Because safe mode works fine. Or else what do I do?

ThanksIs this the Windows that CAME with it? How is the disk LABELED? What happened requiring the reinstall? The answers to these questions are critical.Hey

My computer did not actually come with windows cd, it was preinstalled. I used a genuine windows xp home edition cd- including service pack 1. I used the product key supplied with my computer. The computer had a PROBLEM with the network adaptor apparantly. Thanks for the reply.Have you traveled to Acer's site and dloaded and installed all the drivers for that machine ? ?No not yet- should that fix the problem? I will have to use a different computer to get to the stuff and download it to a usb and try to install it from there. No guarantees but with the proper drivers i'm sure it will run much better than it is right now...

Solve : Importing Office Outlook Files?

Answer»

About 6 months ago I backup office outlook 2003, now I want to import those file to my current office outlook 2003 without over writing the mail files I have now. How do I do that? So other words the new and the OLD files together as one.
This is how I back my files up
I export the registry settings from my current Outlook profiles subkey in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles
And copy the following folders from your current user profile directories. (this assumes your PST files are in the default Microsoft locations).
%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to the equivalent directories for your user on the new machine. Import the registry file on the new machine. Install (if necessary) and I launch Outlook on the new machine and I was good to go.

So, you already did this to transfer your Outlook stuff from one computer to another, right? So, why are asking this question now? I find your post confusing.

I am talking about one computer, What I did about 6 months ago I copy all my mail files (backup) and now I want to intergraded the backup files with the mail files on have currently without overwriting any. Does that help?Yes, that helps. I believe you can import without overwriting your EXISTING mail. This comes from Help in Outlook 2003:

Import information from a Personal Folders file (.pst)

On the File MENU, click Import and Export.
Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.
Click Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next.
In the File to import box, specify the path and file name of the .pst file you want to import.
CHOOSE one of the following:
Replace duplicates with items imported Existing data will be overwritten with the information in the file being imported.

Allow duplicates to be created Existing data will not be overwritten, and duplicates will be added to the current Outlook folder.

Do not import duplicate items Existing data will be kept, and the duplicate information in the file will not be copied to the current Outlook folder.

Follow the remaining instructions in the Import and Export Wizard.

Note the option to not import duplicate items. As a precautionary measure, I definitely would export my current mail before attempting the import. That way, if something goes wrong, you can import you current mail back into Outlook.
