Solve : have no clue wat to do...windows media player? |
Answer» Ok, a little while ago my windows media player stopped playing videos. I have no clue why and have no clue how to fix it. When I play a video like open the video file, it has the sound, the problem is it doesnt have any picture. Its just a black screen. When I maximize it, it still has a black screen. It will never change. Does anyone have a suggestion to try? And I'm not running genuine windows so something within my limits plz Red flag. You need to be legit. Perhaps Microsoft has nailed you.Or maybe it was just a crappy cracked version and got all corrupted. Either way, GX1 is right.Delete it reinstall it this would help in any case. |

Solve : HP Printer Problem? |
Answer» Quote i may not be able to figure how to FIX it but i aint stupid lol....A simple "yes" would do... Do you have access to another printer that you can CONNECT to your laptop and then try printing to from your PC?no sorry......Are there any older versions of the drivers that you could try?not that i am aware of...You may need to ask HP that question; they don't seem to make older drivers available for public download. Still, the puzzling thing is that it neither works through USB nor over SMB (file & printer sharing). That doesn't SOUND like a hardware problem. Mind you, we cannot verify that you network is set up correctly to allow printer sharing and can only take your word for it. Actually, could you try printing over the LAN again, with all software firewalls temporarily disabled?WELL i have it going through my wireless router, i will try lan asapQuote well i have it going through my wireless router"Have it going" |

Solve : Microsoft Office 2000 wont start!!!? |
Answer» I was looking around with TweakUI on my Windows 98 SE computer. Are you absolutely sure that's the way TweakUI was supposed to work? Can cite a reference confirming that? I think your Office 2000 has been uninstalled. So, if you want to have Office 2000, I suggest you head for ebay. No, office hasnt been uninstalled. All the program files are still there. All tweakUI does is remove part of the registry so that the program doesnt show in the list of add/remove programs in the control panel. Using tweakUI, once you select the program and click remove it says: "You will not be able to uninstall this program if you remove it from the add/remove list. Remove the entry anyway?" There is one way which I MIGHT be able to solve this problem. Along with the Remove button in the add/remove tab in TweakUI, there are also New and Edit buttons. Could someone using microsoft office 2000 (and windows 98, 95, NT, ME or 2000) install tweakUI, click on the add/remove tab, highlight Microsoft Office 2000 and click edit. It will come up with an option to edit the name and the uninstall action of that program. Then copy and paste the action of MS office 2000 into this forum. I could then use that and click on new in the add/remove tab and create a new entry. Chances of it actually working... i would say 50%. Download TweakUI: http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp Direct Link: http://download.microsoft.com/download/winme/Install/1.0/WinMe/EN-US/Tweakui.exeHave you tried opening a command prompt and typing scanreg /restore this will give you some earlier backups of your registry, if there choose a date prior to your efforts with TweakUI and hopefully all will be well again. Can you start Word by finding your WINWORD.EXE (or maybe it's just Word.exe for Office 2000) and double clicking on it? Likewise, for Excel; that is, find EXCEL.EXE and double click on it.Quote Can you start Word by finding your WINWORD.EXE (or maybe it's just Word.exe for Office 2000) and double clicking on it? Likewise, for Excel; that is, find EXCEL.EXE and double click on it. nope, tried that and it just comes up with the same message I have looked at TweakUI since your original post and I agree it's supposed to do what you say about removing items from the Add or Remove Programs list without actually removing the program. But, the fact is your program now does not work. So, whatever you did with TweakUI, or something else you did but haven't mentioned or simply aren't aware of, has made Office 2000 inoperable, and I think the only way you're going to GET it back is to buy the program. Nope, soybean. The registry keys that put a program in the add/remove dialog are the same ones that tell the executables that the program is correctly installed. Everything is still there except those keys. cam_s1 had a decent idea. -rockQuote Have you tried opening a command prompt and typing scanreg /restore this will give you some earlier backups of your registry, if there choose a date prior to your efforts with TweakUI and hopefully all will be well again. oh yeah... why didn't i think of that in the first place?? my problem is now solved thanks guys Did that restore Office 2000 to the Add or Remove Programs list?Quote Did that restore Office 2000 to the Add or Remove Programs list? yep, it sure did; and many other programs came back which i had already uninstalled from the computer... oh well, guess its back to tweakUI. LolTweakUI is a wonderful and dangerous tool...Have Fun ! |

Solve : OEM vs. Retail? |
Answer» I have been shopping the AUCTION sites in hopes to save some money on my first build. What is the differance between an OEM version of software and Retail, such as an operating system. Is buying such ITEMS from an auction site even a good idea?Mainly it's in the licence. Have a read: I have been shopping the auction sites in hopes to save some money on my first build. What is the differance between an OEM version of software and Retail, such as an operating system. Is buying such Items from an auction site even a good idea?If for example, you are SPEAKING of OEM XP v. Retail XP the nutshell difference is this : OEM was originally meant for system builders and is intended to live and die on its original box. MS doesn't supply support, the system builder is supposed to. To qualify for this version, resellers were supposed to sell a piece of "internal hardware" with the OEM copy. Savvy bargain hunters buy this version routinely and sometimes (not often) it even comes with a funky "internal part" ! Retail XP allows for the OS to be migrated to other boxes, as long as it is installed on only one box at any one given time. MS support is included...whatever that is Oh, and it comes in a PRETTY, *empty box. *Which spawned the Missing Manual series. I would without hesitation buy the OEM version, but on-line auctions require TRUST and a seller with a excellent feedback. There are other resellers that would be less risky. For hardware components, I might buy OEM unless it was something I had not previously worked with and I wanted instructions that would normally come with the Retail package. OEM parts are just that; parts only. So, if you buy, say, a Western Digital OEM hard drive, you won't get a CD with Data Lifequard Tools on it or instructions on installing the hard drive. So, for hardware components, the buyer's experience is going to be determining factor. For an OS (Windows), I'd probably buy Retail; why preclude my self from legally migrating that OS to another computer?Quote
What do you do if you should want to - off in the future - disassemble that computer and build another? And: What about if you don't actually trash that computer, but make several changes to it, such that WinXP thinks it is a different computer? What do you do then? Either of these are reasonable occurrences with hobbiests. I don't have XP, but am curious how you that do have it handle these situations. |

Solve : Can't find Outlook Address book or wrong perm?? |
Answer» Had to reinstall XPPro and OFFICE 2003. Had copy of HD still. Moved file over to new OUTLOOK with emails (file was supposed to have .pst extension but didn't) with no problems and can view old emails. I did a search for .pab (address book files) files on my old HD but none were found. Found a file in old outlook (not .pab but I think its the right one) and moved it to new outlook. I now have old names and emails in my contacts but when I try to access the address book or use address book to send new mail I get a message that says "can't find the file or wrong permission" I have GIVEN myself full control to that file. Does the program or system need PERMISSIONS. |

Solve : Backup software used/suggestions? |
Answer» What is a good (low cost) back-up solution that you use, and why do you like it? Note: NTBackup is known as Backup on Win9x machines. And, on Win XP, right? In other words, it's found via Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup.Quote And, on Win XP, right? In other words, it's found via Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup. Yeah, go figure. Microsoft was never known to be consistent. And I use Acronis True Image Corporate Workstation. I like it cause it's rather cheap for utility that can backup/restore/clone/create bootable disk over network. Also, i've used Universal Restore feature to restore on bare-metal my full system(even OS and drivers). anyway, check that outOK - I used the windows system tools- Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to back up my drive to an external drive because I need a new hard drive. However, when I look at my external drive, I can't see the files. Are they hidden somehow? How do I check that they have actually transferred? You can try a test restore. You can do the restore to a file and make sure your stuff is there. Make sure you backup system state if you want your windows CONFIG on your new HDQuote What is a good (low cost) back-up solution that you use, and why do you like it? Check out Syncback: Free. Simple. Does not use proprietary compression. Uses plain old Zip files. In other words, having and using Syncback is not required to get your data back. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SyncBack.html http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html#freeware Cobian was mentioned above. You can read about it, and download it here: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23148-order,1-page,1/description.html These programs are nice for backing up to another hard drive - internal or external. Quote I need to backup my files soon (as they should have been done long ago), and I want a good, fast, and easy to use system that is dependable and not too expensive. Also, is it better to use removable media (disc/tape), or buy an external hard drive for this? I have two computers, one with two hard drives (360 GIG total), and one with 120 GIG. I can restore all software programs (less updates) from disc media, by client data is what I need to safeguard. "...is it better to use..." "Better" depends on lots of things. Speed. Ease of use.... which often translates into frequency of use. and so on... A tape drive, with appropriate software can be very dependable. IF it is used regularly. One method, for example, would be to purchase seven tapes. Rotate them daily, one for each day of the week. Have the backup run via scheduling software, - daily. Now you've got daily backups, and if a tape should fail just when you need it, the worst case is that you've lost only the last 24 hours of data. This method is not the least expensive though. And you need to buy new tapes regularly. They wear. Hard drives: Internal or external - they are machines with moving parts, so eventually they wear out and die. So, if you are backing up to a hard drive, you are really just hedging your bet that your daily WORKING drive and your backup drive do not fail at the same time. For many people, this is fine. Depends on your situation. You get to decide. Even if you use something like Syncback with another hard drive, you should get yourself on some sort of schedule to burn the backed up data to CD. For most of us, burning to CD is a pain in the *censored* because we have to track down the most recent copy of our data, for each app we want to back up. At least using something like Syncback makes that simple. Set Syncback up once and it takes care of that part. You come along once a week or month or whatever suits you, and simply burn the backed up data that is all stored already for you. You don't have to go find each piece. |

Solve : need new antivirus/spyware? |

Answer» Quote Microsoft does NOT use ETrust on their computers... When I went to the Microsoft Vista launch for IT professionals, the professional speaker had ETrust Antivirus on his demo computer. Someone I know was talking about antivirus reviews and we did some research. BITDEFENDER got the best antivirus of 2006 on at least 2 well-known websites. I use NOD32 THOUGH. It's good. Quote QuoteOn my Vista RC-1 hard copy there were free TRIALS of eTrust and IIRC, Bitdefender.Microsoft does NOT use ETrust on their computers... So I suppose one could say, eTrust was an early Vista partner. On this machine, I have AVG, AVG-AS (Ewido) and Sygate . Spybot, SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster are also in the mix. Sygate hasn't been supported for some time now, as it was purchased by Symantec. I like Sygate but I will move to Kerio or Comodo when the time comes. One little gadget that I've bee playing with is McAfee SiteAdvisor. It's a tiny, free utility that reports on the relative safety of various websites as you browse. It has its detractors, but I've been finding it useful and very light. The group above have been keeping me safe for a long time and the whole package is surprisingly light. IMHO, it really boils down to what you do and how careful you go about it. |

Solve : PhotoImpressions ver.3? |
Answer» I've been using ArcSoft PhotoImpressions version 3 on my computer for a long time and REALLY like it. Some files were lost and the program doesn't WORK like it used to. The problem is that I no longer have the disk and it came as part of a bundle when I purchased my printer. I went to the ArcSoft sight and they no longer offer that version nor will they give any email or phone support for any software older than a year. A friend gave me their disk, but some of the files are unreadable. Another friend told me that if I make a copy of the disk, it is POSSIBLE that all of the files will copy over to another disk and then I could install it. Does anyone have any information that would help me or maybe have the program that they would copy for me? I have tried most of the other versions and I don't like them. It is from 1999. I have no problem with purchasing it, I just need to find it first. |

Solve : Anti virus scan taking too long? |
Answer» I need some help and advice. PLEASE LET me first explain that I am talking about my father's computer, which is a brand new Dell (Christmas 2006) he is a beginner and far away from me. His friend told him to run his Norton Anti Virus thorough scan because the friend thought the computer was running too slow. After 6 hours only 1/5 of the hard drive had been scanned. Any ideas why and any advice I can relay to my father over the phone?? He had been doing quick scans which showed nothing wrong. He is just learning how to go on the internet, and is very confused. If I was closer than 2000 miles away I would run over there and help him. But the question is, why is it taking Norton so long to do a thorough scan? |

Solve : wrong dates on music?? |
Answer» i dunno if this is the right forum, its kinda confusing for some topics.. i dunno if this is the right forum, its kinda confusing for some topics..Are you downloading older music? Possibly the year is changed on it because it was the year it was made.Now...have the dates changed on music files that were already on your computer? For example: did you have a song that originally said 2004 but now says 1994? Or is it only for new music that you're downloading? Sometimes, whoever you download music from will encode files with the wrong dates. What music PLAYER do you use? Most will let you change the release the dates of music files.ok, sorry win 98 desktop, i use avg for my random virus checks. and yes, its music that is already on my pc.. when i right checked it before, it showed the date created( aka date downloaded).. now, it shows some other random date.. its only recently that this has happened.. to be honest, no , its not a big deal, just kinda freaking me out i use winamp, btw, and i dont edit my MP3 tags or w/eok, think i figured it out.. but for some reason, its rearranging them by the date they were "modified", instead of created.. how do i change this BACK? dont know how they got modified in the first PLACE |

Solve : Strange error?? |

Answer» I GET a strange error ever since i bought my new system.Heres the specs.... Its fear(the purchased one) but it wont load and ive had the prob since day one and it got the computer about 4 days ago or so. but the computer guy said i shouldnt have to pay to get this fixed since ive had this prob since he gave it to me.And it is overclocked(to a safe amount i believe)went from 2.6ghz dual core(equals 5200+) to 2.8 ghz(equals 5600+) and the video cards (2 geforce 7900gs on sli) went from 500/690 to 600/800 So...the computer was given to you? If you can't get a refund/exchange like patio suggests and you've only had this computer for 4 days, it doesn't sound like you have MUCH to lose by reformatting. Answer» Hello, when I try to play a DVD using WinDVD player, an error message comes up that SAYS "Cannot Create Overlay". I went on their support site and it says to LOWER resolution to 800x600 and use HIGH color (65 thousand). I have done both but I still get the same problem. If this is a legit CD, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software. That is always a good first step. Some ideas about your equipment would be helpful as well. It is 100% legit. Solve : Adobe and AOL issue? |
Answer» Hey everyone, After restarting my computer, I opened AOL and got this pop-up asking me if I wanted to install some Adobe program. What Adobe program? Quote We also already have Adobe and its updates on the computer ...Adobe what? Exactly what? What's the status of Viewpoint in your system now? Installed or not?Yeah, I meant Viewpoint Media Player. Sorry about that. It's uninstalled. AOL works fine without it. I think it was the Adobe video player of some sort. It would ask to install it every time I load AOL. We already have all Adobe products on our computer, though. There is also a browser flash plugin written by Adobe...this is probably what it was as some web pages need it to load properly...I think we have that on here. I just noticed in the AOL settings that there is a thing you can select to have a warning if Viewpoint is not installed. I wonder if that popup was brought up from that? As I SAID, though, I wasn't online when the Adobe install popup came up. It's on the sign-on screen. When the INSTALLATION thing came up, I selected to always install Adobe products, or something like that. Is there a way you can go back and undo that?Do you guys know if Viewpoint is probably the reason I was getting that installation popup? It started to happen right after I uninstalled Viewpoint. I selected for it to install any Adobe products in the future. Is there a way I can undo that? I like to be asked before installing anything in the future. Sorry for the annoying questions, guys. I really want to know how to change this, though. There has to be some place on the computer where you can change that, but I can't find it anywhere on the control panel.Although I'm sure you can undo the changes you've made, for the life of me, I can't think of how to do it. But this popup you're getting is very likely related to uninstalling Viewpoint, as it's the graphics engine for a lot of AOL features. But this popup you're getting is very likely related to uninstalling Viewpoint, as it's the graphics engine for a lot of AOL features. I would suggest downloading Viewpoint or even reinstalling AOL if you have to. Thank you for the link! Is it very vital for AOL? I don't use AOL much, but my brother is the one who is doing this and brought the problem to my attention. My brother used AOL this morning w/o Viewpoint and no problems occured. I'm just really confused as to why it would pop up before we even go online. Does anyone know if Adobe and Viewpoint are SOMEHOW associated with each other? I'm overly paranoid of computer issues. My last one had to be repaired all the time due to CRAPPY hardware and viruses. As far as I know, it's not very vital. I think certain things just won't display properly on AOL. I accidentally uninstalled Viewpoint on my old computer once and it caused the login screen to be gray instead of blue (so maybe the graphics on your login screen are screwed up in some way and that's why you're getting the popup). But for the most part, I think things still worked. But I still reinstalled it, just in case. As for your other question...well, Viewpoint does come installed with certain Adobe products. I'm not sure which ones, though. But there does seem to be some sort of tie-in here.Plenty of info out there: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Viewpoint+Media+Player&btnG=Google+Search http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=373 says, in one post, "It's primary use is to assist with online games, if you do not play them, you can remove it along with WildTangent as well." That same post contained a link to for rnemoval instructions.I see. I guess I shouldn't worry about it, then. Thank you for your help, guys!Well, certain things might not perform exactly as they should, but you shouldn't have anything to worry about and I doubt you'll really notice much of a difference. |

Solve : .NBZ and NewsBinPro Problem? |
Answer» Hi all. I'm new here, and know relatively nothing about computers. I'm trying to download a movie, but I cannot figure out exactly how to get it to play. It is a .NBZ file. I know that I need a Newsreader, so I downloaded NewsBinPro. I have the file in NewsBinPro, and now it is a .RAR file. I WANT to be able to watch teh video, but am at a complete loss on how I would go about doing it. Can ANYONE GIVE me a walkthrough of playing this file. I would really appreciate any help that you could give me. |

Solve : Importing Office Outlook Files? |
Answer» About 6 months ago I backup office outlook 2003, now I want to import those file to my current office outlook 2003 without over writing the mail files I have now. How do I do that? So other words the new and the OLD files together as one. This is how I back my files upSo, you already did this to transfer your Outlook stuff from one computer to another, right? So, why are asking this question now? I find your post confusing. Quote QuoteThis is how I back my files upSo, you already did this to transfer your Outlook stuff from one computer to another, right? So, why are asking this question now? I find your post confusing. I am talking about one computer, What I did about 6 months ago I copy all my mail files (backup) and now I want to intergraded the backup files with the mail files on have currently without overwriting any. Does that help?Yes, that helps. I believe you can import without overwriting your EXISTING mail. This comes from Help in Outlook 2003: Import information from a Personal Folders file (.pst) On the File MENU, click Import and Export. Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next. Click Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next. In the File to import box, specify the path and file name of the .pst file you want to import. CHOOSE one of the following: Replace duplicates with items imported Existing data will be overwritten with the information in the file being imported. Allow duplicates to be created Existing data will not be overwritten, and duplicates will be added to the current Outlook folder. Do not import duplicate items Existing data will be kept, and the duplicate information in the file will not be copied to the current Outlook folder. Follow the remaining instructions in the Import and Export Wizard. Note the option to not import duplicate items. As a precautionary measure, I definitely would export my current mail before attempting the import. That way, if something goes wrong, you can import you current mail back into Outlook. |
