MY PC is a built one and it has a 120GB HDD with three partitions made:
C: 18GB with 10GB space free
E: 24GB with 5GB space free
F: 78GB with 12GB space free
C is the main drive and ACTUALLY there is not any important file storing in it, and I would like to just make an backup image for the system files only.

So, I was googling for a software to backup my system, and then I found out the one with this brand name: Acronis TRUE Image.
I don't know about it actually coz I dont have any experience on using it before.
What I know of it is that the 11th version has been released and it's quite expensive to buy. But I am rather concerned about if the latest version is the best one to use on my system
(Windows XP SP2, 2GB Ram, Dual Core CPU 1.6GHZ, 120GB HDD).

Which version are you using now?
How do you feel about it?
and which version of Acronis True Image do you think is the most stable one for beginner users?

Perhaps you'd like to experiment with the free XXClone before rushing to part with your hard-earned.

Hi, i run win xp pro with sp2 on my pc. Whenever i try to install roxio media suite 10 on my pc, it TAKES a long while, about 30 plus minutes to install. After INSTALLATION and UPON opening the software the software's menu loads but hangs when a TASK is selected. the discs that came with my xp laptop will not reboot the cd, in either way the readme's instructed me to do it

does xp have a universal reboot set up or are their different versions in different models?To boot from a CD-ROM you need to setup the BIOS so that it loads from the CD-ROM instead of the hard drive. When you start your computer, do you get anything like 'Press F10 to ENTER setup'?And KEEP in mind that if they are "ahem" copies of XP that will also cause these symptoms...yes, it is f2 though, but when i enter the setup menu and i try reboot from disk, nothing happens

and they ARENT copies, they are original disks that came with it, straight from the manufacturerWhen in setup and you change the boot order to CDRom FIRST you need to press F10 to "SAVE changes and exit"...

I have an excel file which is an energy calculator, the file was made by a works colleague (now unfortunately deceased) but in ORDER to prove the calculation to an energy body they have to view the internal calculations used but I can't get into it, the file has been locked.
Is there anyway I can unlock the file to obtain the information? When you say "locked" do you get an error MESSAGE saying it's locked? Was it created on your computer or the file creators and then copied to yours?

If the latter, and you're running XP, right-click the file / properties / security / advanced / owner tab. Who is listed as the owner? If not you, go BACK one step and add yourself as a user, then go forward and change ownership to yourself.

The file was created on another computer, my PROBLEM OCCURS when I go into Tools, Protection, Unprotect sheet or workbook I'm asked for a password - which I obviously can't insert as I don't know it.
I am running XP but if I try what you have suggested I can only - R/Click, properties, the only 3 tabs which appear are General/Custom/Summary therefore the entire routine you request to be completed can't be done! Any further suggestions?

Thanks for the link - Downloaded the Excel cracker software programme, set it up, let it work on the file (for almost 72 hrs!). Unfortunately it didn't manage to crack the code!

Anyone else with any ideas?With two tries, with two different tools, and no results....file itself may be corrupted.

I have a noisy 40 GB HD that I would like to use as a source for a fresh XP installations (kinda like a rescue partition). I want to be able to slave it to another, most likely smaller, HDD and copy the installation over for quicker recovery than a fresh install that requires updates, etc. I may even want to include several variations of the install.

I have tried a program called HDClone (from the UBCD) and really like its interface, however, the FREE version only does straight small to large size HDD clones. I need to be able to copy from partition to partition, or partition to HD I suppose. Being the cheapskate than I am, are there any FREE programs out there as nice as HDClone that will do what I want to do?

Yes.
Every HDD manuf. has one...select the 40G manuf. and DLoad their utilities.
Hook it up as a slave drive and boot with the utility floppy/CD you created and select clone...
It will then clone your existing install onto the 40G.
I would also run the HDD diagnostics on that 40G as well to make sure you can trust it with data.Hmmm...really? The HD manu is WD. It will even do partition to partition or will allow me to clone a partition from a 40 GB to a 13.6 GB?

You didn't mention partitions...this complicates things slightly so post back with exactly what you want to do describing each drive/partition and i'll walk you through it...
And yes it can be done as long as the partition you are cloning to is larger than the partition you are cloning...
You also have to take into account that if you want this drive to be bootable then the clone has to go to the first partition of the source drive which NEEDS to be set as active...

Have you downloaded stuff before? when you downloaded something, select 'save' instead of 'open' then select a location where you would like to save the file (my music or something).

If you select open, it will go into your temporary folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files) and then play.

Try to find another site where you would like to download from & I'll check it out for you before you download anything from there.

If all else fails there's always Limewire...McAfee is warning me against downloading from Limewire as well, so I'm totally confused. Should I go to a safe site and purchase music? It isn't easy finding a NICE clean huge resource of free MP3's, if it were, then nobody would buy any music.

You could find a nice safe site to purchase music from, you could try Limewire (I've never had any problems with Limewire) you could rip CD's or you could try one of those search ENGINES I gave you earlier.

Theres also ways of recording (quite easily) 'what you hear' & saving those recordings as MP3's, useful for saving songs from listening to Lost.FM etc.

Last year I created a slide show project containing about 39 slide shows and 800 images using an early version of Nero (circa 2001). A few months ago my Lenovo crashed and I had to reformat it back to the factory settings. Some time earlier I had backed up all my important files to CD but somehow had missed copying the SLIDESHOW setup (for WANT of a better word) which meant that, although I had all the images, the slide show itself was lost.

I now have Nero 7 Essentials and the slide show plug in. So, my father has a peculiar problem. There are seven of us kids that still live at home. Three of us have our own laptops, one has a desktop, and the three remaining (younger ones) USE the family computer. We also have a D-Link wireless router.

My father is interested in filtering the crap out of the internet. This is a simple matter of installing Net Nanny on the computer that he owns (the family one), but not really possible for the ones we own. As far as I understand, the only way he could do it is if we all set him up as the administrator on our computers and allow him to install the software. Needless to say, this idea makes us cringe a little.

Is there any hardware/software out there that is like a wireless router with filtering software BUILT in? Or is there another solution that I'm not thinking of? We need to filter the internet at its source.

Or does Net Nanny actually require a password for uninstall? Maybe he wouldn't need to be the administrator...
I WOULD suggest he creates an account at www.opendns.com . (It's completely free) The site offers website filtering on a variety of categories plus a lot of other features.
Then it's just a matter of setting up the router to use the DNS servers from opendns.com and then the whole network will be filtered.

Edit: Slight, problem. We have a D-Link 625. It doesn't appear on the list of D-Link routers on the OpenDNS site. They only have these ones:

EBR-2310If they list the 624 it should work fine...Yeah it will work with pretty much any router. Opendns.com just doesn't have setup guides for all. Try one of the other D-link guides as patio SUGGESTS, chances are pretty good the setup is nearly identical.

Open a new spreadsheet.
Call the datasource window (F4)
Browse your database and drag a table onto a cell.
If you don't see your database among the datasources: Right-click in the datasouce window and call the dialog to register databases (MAKE a Base file's tables and queries accessible in other components).
When you have imported your data in a spreadsheet, save in any format you like. Access can import text tables (*.csv) and *.xls.

I have a stand alone version of Word 2002; my work software program in ONLINE
& I have to generate a weekly project "report" I export this in HTML format;
open in Word & then copy to a pre-formated word document template, if I am in
normal VIEW everything will show fine, sometimes when in the print view my
pages will shift & then disappear. I have to then CLOSE word out & reopen to
be able to "see" the missing info. I need to be able to work in print view
as I am editing the document for a printed bulletin.

I am working in windows xp; have upgraded to 1.5 gig of RAM any suggestions

At my high SCHOOL, I'm taking Computer Programming Honors and we are about to learn Java. I need a Java IDE that I can use at HOME to do my programming homework. At school I THINK we use BlueJ for our programs. Should DOWNLOAD BlueJ on my home PC to use? Are there better alternatives? I also have a version of Microsoft Visual J# 2005 Express, does that program SUPPORT Java?

I recently completed a 200-plus page story and added page numbers to the bottom as well as a header. Now I find out I need to change the header and put the page numbers at the top. How do I GO about deleting the page numbers and the old header? I see where they can be added, but nothing to delete them.Double click the header and you should be able to edit it.
Same goes for the page numbers at the bottom.
Also, if you have many pages you can auto number the pages in the header using field codes - SOMETHING like this: press - control R (move to right side), then TYPE Page - then space, then insert field (from the formatting tool bar) - select page (under field names), then space, then insert field - select NumPages. Then all pages will be auto numbered - a BIT like this page 1 of 200, 2 of 200, ETC...

I was WONDERING if anyone could offer me any assistance in getting my Gmail to sync up with my Outlook 2003 and my Treo 650 Versamail. I have a compaq presario r4000 laptop and its old junky but it works. Plus I'm in college so cheap is good. Running Vista home premium on Advent T9408, CORE 2cpu, 4300 at 1.8GHz, 1022mb, 32-Bit Operating system.

All of a SUDDEN when I TURN on my COMPUTER the USB internet connection doesn't work, after I SWITCH to an alternative USB slot and re start it connects fine. Even after switching, every time I re start the computer the USB has to be switched to an alternative USB - even if it means switching it back to the one which didn't work the day before, it'll work after switching and re starting.

Next time I started to write in this particular file, the "paper clip helper" disappeared and a box announced that this "little guy" is not longer working and I must contact the online support.

I click the program to explore it and found the clip helper box and restore it. Now is working fine.

But, this file started to have an additional problem:

Lets say the name of the file is "Poetry".

Well, it HAPPENS that in the middle of my writings a box shows up telling me that the program has stop working and I have two choices, to close the program or to contact the online SERVICE.

I decided to close the program and see what is going on.

It appeared in the computer's screen two COPIES of the same file, but one shows up as "~Poetry".

I have deleted it several times, and I still can use the "real" file and keep writing but this is something that bothers a lot, because microsoft word STOPS working in the middle of my writing, tellig me again that the program has stop working and giving me the two choices.

What is going on?

Why is this happening?

I am writing from another of my computers, because the one with my personal records and files (writings) is a lap top that never has been connected to the internet, and I don't think it will be.

For this reason I am not using the online services even if they were for free.

May somebody can help me with this? If this problem requires a special service, at least I want to know what is the cause of such duplicated files showing from time to time.

There are quite a few updates for OFFICE 2K ...have you connected and dloaded them all ? ?The ~ files are essentially temporary copies of documents created by Office. That part is normal. The temporary files would normally go away when you save and close a document, but the crash is preventing the normal behavior.
Do any relevant events appear in the event viewer?
(To get to the event viewer: Control Panel ->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer)

My problem is to retain all FORMULAS on a Spreadsheet file when SAVE As to any other location, particularly to CD discs. Save easily, but without a single formula, and there are in excess of a hundered of them.

At my inexperience level I avoid anything drastic such as reinstalling Office or whatever. The method I have used successfully is:

1. Highlight any cell with a formula.
2. Go to any empty cell and Edit/Copy.
3. Right click/select Paste Special.
4. Click Formulas.
5. Click Escape twice.
6. Click keyboard Delete to empty that cell.

But now all is lost by inability to use the Paste Special GRAYED out item.

I do hope one of you experts can help with this. And if, in addition, you have ANOTHER means of retaining spreadsheet formulas when saving elsewhere so much the better.

Thanks!Formulas are saved with an Excel workbook as a matter of course. It is not necessary to do anything special. I'm unsure of your method though. Seems you're COPYING a formula to a new cell and then deleting it.

I'm on a Toshiba laptop, XP Home, SP2...
For some reason when trying to run Superantispyware I get an error message saying the program must close as seen below....

When I try to uninstall it I get another message, error 1722, again as seen below, this happens when I USE add/remove programs, CCleaner, or Revo uninstaller....
I also tried SAS's own install/repair program and the same thing happens....

Then tried to directly DELETE the folder, but again cant, the file is in use....
As a last RESORT I tried Unlocker, but that DOESNT work either, Unlocker then just gets an error as seen below....

Anyone know what might be happening or how I can uninstall this beast?
I'm really paranoid about always running spyware programs and such, so I dont think I have a virus....

- ".jar" file can be open by any program, which can open ".zip" file (Winzip, 7-zip, etc.)
- ".uif" is ISO TYPE compressed file, and as FAR, as I know, it can be open only by MagicISO (not free, however they have a trial version)

I (when I say "I", I mean very good software) have wrote a script that when double clicked works perfectly. Now I would like to know where the script should be placed in order for the computer to run it automatically. I tried putting it in the Startup folder, but that did not work. Another fact about the script is it is set to work based on a maped drive, so would there be a boot order isse? I.E. the script would try to run before the drive is mapped?You might try using the sleep method in your script to delay execution until the drive is mapped otherwise we need know more about your environment.

Are the drives mapped by another script? Is there is a master script executing child scripts to actually carry out specific tasks? If so, you could use the shell object's run method to wait for each script to finish before starting the next script.

You might also mention if your using ACTIVE Directory.

System One:
I am using active directory with all mapped drives running from a login.bat script.

System Two:
Uses AD as well, but the maps are local reconnects at stratup. Eventually this system will be converting to system one, but the computer I tested from was on this system.For System One I suggest creating a reference in the login.bat file for the wsf job:

You may have to play around with the interval until you get it right.

This is my current situation :
I've got :
Windows XP Home SP1 installed on my laptop (fresh,clean install)
140 GB HD (Laptop)
300 GB HD (external) - 2 encrpyted (with TrueCrpyt) partitions --> total 270 GB
The Laptop HD had 3 partitions on it:
Partition 1 : Recovery - FAT32 - 7 GB
Partition 2 : VISTAOS - NTFS - 80 GB (Windows Vista)
Partition 2 : DATA - NTFS - ~50 GB

Now I reparitioned it in the process of installing Windows XP (CUZ Windows Vista is a b1tch) and now :
(Laptop HD)
Partition 1 : Unnamed - NTFS - 10 GB (Windows XP)
Partition 2 : Unnamed - none - 10 GB
Partition 3 : Unnamed - none - 90 GB
still 30 GB left to partition incase I wanna install another OS.

So as I said before my external Hd has 2 encrypted partitions (both encrypted with TrueCrypt). The password to open the encrypted partitions in "PW.rar" was on the VISTAOS partition in the "Users/****/" directory.
Stupid as I am I cut and pasted all the data on "DATA" and most of the data on "VISTAOS" (including the password file) into the encrypted partition. I used BartPE to do this, cuz Windows Vista refused to boot. Now the password file is gone and the external HD is beautifully encrypted, but I don't have any access to it.
The worst thing is all the documents for my studies are backed up on that encrypted HD !
Good thing is I know part of the password and now this is where u guys jump in.

The password is about 18 characters long. Starts with "€|\/|³" and ends with "$]-[" (quotation MARKS omitted). The word is supposed to be "emerald-cash".
Question 1 (and possible SOLUTION):
Is there any program, that can generate a list of passwords, that I can try out of that it can try out on TrueCrypt ?

Question 2 (maybe another solution):
Is there even a slight chance to recover the "PW.rar" file ? Even a tiny bit wouuld be enough cuz it's only about 16 KB I think maybe even less.

Here's how:
Using Bart PE and GetDataBack for NTFS, I created a Windows Live CD (call is as u like that's what I call it) with the GDBfN plugin.
After booting the P.C with the Live CD, GDBfN scanned the laptop-HD and recovered the password-archive.

This was possible, cuz I "only" rewrote the partition table and Quick-formatted the Windows XP partition. The Windows didn't take up that much space, so it didn't overwrite the needed data --> recovery ! (^_^)

I'm running AVG free, Cclean and Xoftspy SE. I think that the problem started after running Xoftspy the last time, I can't be sure. I ran Registry mechanic thinking that it might help, the results were the same. I had High hopes when I went into the INI folder to launch the Sr.ini file but it wasn't there or it no longer exist. I'm in the same boat, keep the suggestions coming.

CWI found the problem. I went back into Xoftspy and restored the last file in quarantine, I checked my control panel and all the programs open now. I ran Xoftspy again and this time I looked at all the exceptions and deleted them all. I tried the control panel again and everything is working fine. I hope this can help someone else with the same problem. Thanks for the replies.

I am TRYING to fix SOMEONE's computer that has the typical hal.dll is missing error. I tried a bootcfg /rebuild from the recovery CONSOLE and it seemed to fix the PROBLEM initially. In the boot process it got to the loading windows screen but never reached the desktop. Could this be a case where instead of the boot.ini file being damaged the hal.dll could actually be missing?

note: about EVERY 5-10 seconds the screen flickers.

Version of windows?The loading screen is the normal Windows. That's why I thought that it was fixed. But then it turned black and started flickering like I mentioned.

One of those amazing things happened where something stops working - WMP suddenly won't rip CD's for me anymore! yay!

'WMP can not rip one or more TRACKS from the CD'

(actually, didn't rip ANY of them, couldn't even get the error message right!)

So... any ideas?

*UPDATE*

I clicked on 'web help' & got error code C00D0FB0 'Windows MEDIA PLAYER cannot rip tracks from the CD correctly because the CD DRIVE settings in Device Manager do not match the CD drive settings in the Player'

If anyone knows how to fix this it'd save me some time, thanksSolution:

(In WMP) tools > options > devices > (double click CD/DVD drive) > check 'use error correction' under Rip.

OK, this is kinda weird and I need help. I work doing MALL security, and i'm trying to make an excel list of all of our banned persons. Part of this list includes police report numbers, and the way our local PD does report numbers is the first 2 digits of the year (07) a dash (-) and then a number that increases thoughout the year (1-9999+), so a typical report number towards the end of the year will look like 07-12345, excel has no problem typing these in. The problem is the numbers at the begining of the year is one number short (07-1234, notice the lack of "5").

My problem is that with the 4 spaced report numbers excel automatically converts them to a date. The number i'm on is "07-3196" and it is converting it to "Jul-96". Keep in mind that I also have to search for these numbers to. Is there a formula, or anyway to keep excel from automatically converting these numbers to date and time? Any ANSWERS would be appreciated. (please execuse any spelling or grammar, long day, LOL)It's been 8 years since I had to do something just the same. There were ways in the '90's version to turn off the smart parts of excell.

First, Ive found descent help at the local public library. Whether it is from the guy in charge who was familiar with Office products or more importantly, there is a full section of donated computer books for DUMMIES.

Having said that, if your controlling the excell template, simply add a symbol in front of the 07 for example; #, *, BP07 [for Banned Persons], or anything you choose. It will fool the program and not recognise the data as an industrial form of writing a date as it is trying to auto correct.

As a last note, if you are adding a symbol, make sure in your footnotes and job task description, you add the change. This will help if someone else is putting in fresh data during your vacation abscense.

As kusmaina did ask, "we assume that is what you WANT to do; roll back v11 to v10". Hi my problem is probably simple yet I dont have an answer. bare with me. I am doing a project at work where I am using 2 excel SPREAD sheets 1 for 2007, 1 for 2008. The problem is by accident i type info on the 08 spreadsheet that should be on the 07 spreadsheet. How do I TAKE the info and put it on the right spread sheet. I am also using a formula. when I try to paste it I get "NA" or "REF!", and the proper data wont "connect" So How do I switch info from one spreadsheet to another?Do both spreadsheets have the same layout? Same cell formatting, same formulas, etc.?

You're only copying values, i.e. numbers, not formulas, from one to the other, right? So, you might, for example, copy a number in cell B10 from one spreadsheet to the same cell in the other, right?if you copy formulas from sheet 1 to sheet 2...

excel will calculate according to formulas just like on sheet 1 but, using sheet data you want to use for sheet 2.

So you need to have data in sheet 2 (or you can rreference to data on other sheets) otherwise NA or REF! appears to tell you formulas didn't work because no data existed.Just to clarify what you are doing, are you using the 'edit','paste special', 'values' sequence to paste your data ? if not then make sure you try this first.

If you still get error messages then you may have an an error in the formula.

If not then try : '=if(iserror(your formula=true),0,your formula) this will remove the error BUT will insert a 0 in the cellI think the new data your trying to insert (under those formula's) is incompatible with all the previous data (mathematical computations) you have from the start of each years data, It is recognising it as a false total.

I hope some of the previous suggestions have already helped you. I think I had a FRIEND with a similiar problem. I think he was able to temporarly disable the formula's for the respective columns, cut and paste your data and then reinsert the APPROPRIATE formula's.

On my HP Laptop after I log in with my PASSWORD it just loads the background of my desktop no applications or anything. I KNOW there is way to LOAD explorer.exe but I forgot how to do it does anyone remember or know?

If you didn't pay enough attention during 2007 installation, most likely it installed into your 2003 directory, overwriting its files.
If you have Office 2003 CD, reinstall may be your only option.Usually what happens when you install a new version of an application, the new version will look for any previous versions and delete all files and contents, after that it starts a fresh new installation which means your office 2003 is now gone. Here is an EXAMPLE if you were to try and install an OLDER version of DirectX without deleting the previous one then you would get a MESSAGE saying you already have the latest or higher version of DirectX and it would ask you if you still want to continue or quit the setup. So, reinstalling would be your only option unless there is a recovery software of deleted files which I think there is.I know this advice is KIND've late, but figured it might come in handy for future reference. When you install software it usually ask for the location to install c:/programs/software. I always change the location for trial software to this c:/test programs/software. These will allow for a bunch of different scenarios, one of which is multiple applications. The other would be to find and ensure the software was completely deleted. I don't know whether this is the right place to post this message but I am sure someone will TELL me if it is not.

I have recently installed a NEW version of Charter's security suite which seems to have sent my email haywire! For days I have not been able to either send or receive emails with an error notice coming up Operation Incomplete. Today a notice came up:-

"Socket error 10013 Port110 Protocol POP An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions."

Please could you tell me what that MEANS and how I can FIX it?

It has often been my observation on the CH forums that users are requested or of their own initiative include in their post data pertenant to the difficulty they wish to resolve within their post. It is obvious to me that this can be of great assistance. It will eliminate the possibility of copying errors, failure to include all relevant info,probably minimize a lot of unnecessary verbage,and certainly give a clear description. Now the question how does one do that? As an example you run an "everest" scan on your computer in order to respond to question by someone trying to help with a problem. The data requested is shown on your screen. How do you get it into a CH forum reply? truenorthRight CLICK any subject in Everest and select Quick Report --> Plain TEXT.
The you can just copy/paste the text into a reply here.Deerpark, Thank you for the info. Certainly will help when using "everest" but that was just an example and not intended to be exclusionary of other sources of data. I was hoping for a solution that would be applicable regardless of the data displayed. For instance the displayed results of "device manager" ,the opening paused DOS page when a computer boots, etc,etc. truenorthYou may be talking about screen capture program.

Both do an excellent job of capturing anything i want. HOWEVER neither by any manner i have tried (including reading the help files) will allow me to post it in a CH forum "reply. Specifically what i tried to do was copy your logo at the bottom of your messages and insert it in a reply to you. suggestions please. truenorth







In a CH reply click additional Options, select Browse and find the picture you want to attach to your reply.
Alternately, if you wish to add more pictures to a reply you can use an image hosting service like Imageshack.

There are two ways of doing this. One way is to "attach" the image to your post. When you compose a message, you see a hyperlink below the message composition panel; it's titled Additional Options.... Click on it to view those options. You'll see a box where you can enter the location of a file, and you see a Browse button which will let you browse to a file on your hard drive. Images/files attached this way are only viewable to members who are logged on to the forum.

The other way to insert images is to upload them to a image/photo hosting WEBSITE such as photobucket.com or imageshack.us and then post a link to the image from that hosting site. For example, I'll put an image here:
