Solve : windows media player / windows media center? |
Answer» How do you FIX the problem with windows media player ... I play a video and sometimes see MPMF.exe running on high CPU usage and when I run video on full screen, sometimes there is lag between audio/video or in general! What is MPMF.exe? (MediaPoint Manager?) sorry mfpmp.exe is the actual name, I made typo there. See my sig, all my computer info is there.Quote See my sig, all my computer info is thereSorry, I must be going blind...hehehe As for your problem, it looks like you're not alone, and it's all connected to DRM (copyright) problems. You can read here: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1313722&SiteID=1 and a guy nicked "tiomeg" provides more links. I wonder, if it would help, if you use different player, like Winamp, VLC, etc.In general, windows media player is fine, as it plays everything I THROW at it. It is just in those cases where the mfpmp problem happens and my CPU usage skyrockets upwards, especially at the full screen mode. Do you recommend Windows Media Center? I like it's features, but it does not have DRM problem of windows media player? Or if not, what player you recommend that has nice appearance, does not eat up CPU and memory and ALSO plays all common video files, DVD and music files you throw at it? And for windows vista home premium, do you recommend I get more memory than I already do have? I heard somwhere 2 GB is recommended while somewhere I heard 1.5 GB is sufficient, as the minimum 1GB is not enough for vista AND applications.VLC Player... Or GOM.Quote do you recommend I get more memory than I already do have?Possibly...I have 2gig, and Vista works fine. You don't want to go over 3gig, because Vista won't really (practically) use anything over 3gig, EVEN with its limit of 4gig. |

Solve : Microsoft Outlook - viewing jpg attachments on emails? |
Answer» When I was using Outlook Express, I was able to view jpg attachments on emails by simply scrolling down. Now I am using Microsoft Outlook and have to open each jpg attachment individually to view the pics. I much prefer the convenience of scrolling down to view the jpg attachments on emails. Can I change my Microsoft Outlook to work the same way as Outlook Express? http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/art http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/artHow is that reference supposed to help? I see nothing there that relates to his question. debonair, I believe the answer to your question is no. I've searched through the settings in my Outlook 2003 and I see no option to view jpg attachments other than by opening them individually. This is probably, at least in part, due to Outlook being a more secure email client than Outlook Express. Since jpg files have been used to disguise viruses, not automatically opening them, as in Outlook Express, means tighter security. Thanks for your response:) That ANSWERS my question. Not the answer I was hoping for but it makes sense. I tried the suggested link from the previous poster and found nothing related to my question. S/He must have not understood the question .soybean is right about security issue, but there may be a solution: http://blogs.chron.com/helpline/archives/2006/10/viewing_images.html Quote Users of Outlook 2003 will notice when they receive a message with images in it that, instead of seeing the image, they see TEXT that reads:Quote from: Broni on October 30, 2007, 10:11:07 PM soybean is right about security issue, but there may be a solution:Your long quote, which I did not repeat here, appears to be referring to the case where images are inserted into the body of the message by the sender, not as attachments. So, it does not apply to messages where pictures have been sent as attachments. |

Solve : What is "System"? |
Answer» ok when you hit ctrl+alt+del it shows a list. in processes theres something called "System" not "System Idle Process" but just system. what is it? If you can point to an article that'd be cool. thanksIt is the root controller for the Admin account according to process EXPLORER...in other WORDS without it a bunch of stuff won't run.... patio its at 100% in another comp that i have. no matter what i do even if i get into Safe Mode. Stays constantly at 100 no matter what i do. any way to fix it?Depends on what Tab you are viewing in TASK Manager...in one of them the CPU % is always at 100% or all processes need to add up to that total.nah man its just that single process that takes up everything. everything is really slow. i've tried everything i can think of. no viruses on the comp or anything of that sort.DLoad and install Process Explorer...then spend some time in the Help file....you can view each single process and what other processes are running off it/ dependent on it etc. hmm. well its been dying for a long time now. So have we all. Are you being facetious, or are you really saying that your hard drive has been SHOWING symptoms of failure for a while? If that is right, you are wasting a lot of time. Quote any way i can check to be sure? You mean you can't quite believe it? Hardware-failure-denial is a familiar sight on this type of forum. Start in safe mode and run chkdisk /r c: from the command prompt. 1)hard drive has not been showing signs of failure. just having problems with the "system" in processes 2)I already did chkdsk /r. I've had many hd's go bad on me so I'd think I would know. |

Solve : Bookmarks & Hyperlinks? |
Answer» HI In WORD (Office 2003), I have set up bookmarks which are linked to hyperlinks. Selecting CONTROL while pointing to the hyperlink takes me to the desired location but is there a shortcut that ALLOWS me to go back to the original location (original hyperlink) without having to scroll back through the ENTIRE document. Thanks Steve I do not know what you mean by control. when i right click it just 7 options then hyperlink and you can add it to favorites or open it up in a new window. can you please be more specific?Sorry CONTROL is the control key. I am looking for a way to return to the hyperlink (which may be part of an index on the very first pages of a document) from where the hyperlink refers to. Otherwise it is a process of scrolling all the way back to the hyperlink at the start of the documents which can be numerous pages. Thanks SteveHome key.....or Alt -Activate the Web toolbar in Word. It contains Back and Forward buttons, same as a web browser. To add the Web toolbar, right click on a blank part of your toolbar area and select it from the list. |

Solve : µTorrent keeps Firefox from opening? |
Answer» If I Have µTorrent running and I try to launch Firefox it just won't open. As soon as I close µTorrent, Firefox opens. If I leave Firefox open and then launch µTorrent, Firefox won't load any sites. This started happening yesterday for no reason, I didn't change anything. It worked before WITHOUT any problem.Does same thing happen with IE? ...I haven't changed any internet-related settings. For this to happen, µTorrent has to be open. ... But have you changed any of the settings within utorrent? I wondering if it is using all the available bandwidth. There are settings within utorrent's config for maximun number of connections, max up speed, and max down speed, among others. Have you changed any of these recently? If nothing else, try slowing the max speeds of utorrent, and lowering the max number of connections. Try a drastic experiment first.... cut them all way down. Then try your other internet apps. See if that makes a difference. If it does, then START raising the items you lowered, until you hit a happy medium. Quote About safe mode, do you mean booting Windows into safe mode or running some program in safe mode?Yes.I haven't changed any settings. I doubt µTorrent is using all availible bandwidth, I am downloading one torrent which goes really slow, like 5-30 kbps. My connection is way better than that, I can get speeds up to 600 kbps, depending on the SERVER. |

Solve : Can a workbook be unsaved from Microsoft Excel?? |
Answer» I think I already know this answer but I thought it might be worth a query to those who are more proficient with Excel (I consider myself a very basic user). I ran a search and the original document does appear but I can't go anywhere with it.Exactly what does that mean? Can you open that "original document"? Does it have your old data?If you leave the workbook open, you can simply Undo (CTRL + Z). However, once you close it, I believe you are stuck with those changes.First a very belated but heartfelt "Thank You" to Soybean and CB Matt. Due to a family medical emergency, I've been away and unable to access my email until today. To answer your question, Soybean; Yes, the workbook had old and very valuable data. To CBMatt; Unfortunately, I had closed the workbook and could not use the "undo" or "Ctrl Z" feature. I appreciate your attempts to help me but I feel this is a lost cause. If either of you (or anyone else for that matter) can think of a way to recapture that old data, please let me know. I hate to say it, but I don't think there's any way you can retrieve that old data at this point. It might be possible that System Restore has an old copy of your file saved, but the chance of that is very low. When working with important information, you should ALWAYS save a backup copy (I've gotten into the habit of saving every spreadsheet under two different names). And when you want to start a new workbook, always open up a new file instead of editing a pre-existing one. I'm sorry, I wish I had a better solution for you.To CBMatt: Of course it's a lesson I learned too late, but I've now backed up all my workbooks and I'm considering your point of saving them under 2 seperate names. That would be additional protection for any missteps I might make in the future. Thanks again for your help and input. |

Solve : Windows Vista security locked my folders and files? |
Answer» I had some personal files and FOLDERS I wanted locked so I right clicked on a the folder that had all of them in there. Went to the security tab and hit deny, I thought for everyone else but me. Well now when I try to go in and look at them my computer says I do not have the permissions. I was finally unable to unlock that folder, then a few folders inside of it. I have thousands of files in this mother...... and I can't be going into each one, one at a time unlocking it. I really don't even know how I unlocked most of them, just random luck I think. So mostly I need to know how to unlock the whole folder and all the files so that I have access to them again. Otherwise how do I unlock each one individually. I have windows xp that come with a new HP laptop, the files I had placed in an external hard drive. Please help me, some of these files I need instant access too and soon.PS. if you could tell me how to put my trash can back on my desktop I would appreciate it. I accidently deleted it.There is no Deny option in Security tab. What exactly did you do?There is a deny. You right click on a folder. Go to properties. Go to the security tab. In the middle of the tab you will see "edit." When you go in to that you will see the ability to CHECK or uncheck features. For each user on the computer. I remember unchecking the ability for anyone else besides my adminstrator ACCOUNT to see the files. But it won't LET me see them. |

Solve : Norton antivirus problem..HELPPP? |
Answer» it can be,but why need to gave your money to them since we have LOTS of av free?
Personally, I have all of my malware protection set to automatic, but still like to open these programs and manually check for updates. I like to have complete control over my computer and not rely on the software to do its job. Consider it overkill, but better safe than sorry. Sorry about rambling, but I just though you'd get a better understanding, if there were a little more detail about the subject. Good luck to you...ohhh thanks!!!! I only have spybot as my spyware program, and norton for viruses, but it hasn't worked well at all lately which is why I'll probably uninstall it.The only reason I haven't is because I like to try hard to fix something before getting rid of it, I'm very conservative. ..... Also, I have a quick question, when Norton scans my enitre computer system, it always detects a tracking cookie, which Norton says has been fixed but each time it scans that same cookie shows up requiring attention I tried to remove the cookie through Windows add/remove a program wizard, but I cannot find it's filename..I know it belongs to the ad.yield.manager or something, from those annoying ads on websites. I was thinking about using windows explorer to delete it but i don't know how risky it is to do it that way.The first thing I did was go to wikipedia.com and plugged in "tracking cookie". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracking_cookie From there you can get detailed information all about tracking cookies. At this point, I don't see any reason to be alarmed. First, If spy-bot is not paying attention to it, it means to me it doesn't recognize it as a problem. Secondly, I think norton puts on a display of "required attention items" in order for you to think that they are so wonderful you couldn't live without them. Something like a liberal democrat. Norton will put on a display whether you like it or not. Maybe finally if it is just plane bugging you, you can adjust your security settings alittle tighter in Windows; Tools; Internet Options. After you read the article, you may become more comfortable but find after you've tightenned your security settings to high. You may find it more difficlt to navigate the web if they are set to high. Example; I set my setting one day in the middle of the month "higher then default". At the end of the month, I wanted to access my bank but couldn't. It was my security setting set to high even thought their https: url was in my approved sites. I hope this helps. T Quote The only reason I haven't is because I like to try hard to fix something before getting rid of it, I'm very conservative. Not to poke fun or make light of things but if you apply this approach to Norton you have alot of work to do... They have a few hundred people who get paid to show up everyday and do the same thing and look how far they've gotten. As far as the tracking cookie this could be showing up each time for a number of reasons...your homepage, any online games that are installed, a piece of hardware phoning home for updates etc. List the name of the cookie and that will help narrow it down. p.s. I would consider adding AdAware to your package...also Free. No one scanner gets it all which is why a multi-level approach is best. You neither poked fun nor made light of. This site is designed for just those ideas. I agree adding Ad-Aware SE will remove the same cookie everytime (and alot more). I use it. The point I tried to make was essentually what you said. It is a matter of your surfing habits. Norton is a pain in the *censored*. The cookie will be there every seesion your done on line. If it is a harmless cookie (average TAC. 3.00), we have nothing to worry about. Spybot didn't care. The only time I see a problem is if your bogged down with some many that is slows the sysytem down some. Anyway, I think he was just really worried if he had a problem or not. The consensus is he doesn't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracking_cookie again, the information in this link should clear up all kinds of questions. Hey thanks! that was some great info there! the cookie is from an adyieldmanager site, and even Norton says it's risk level was LOW and not attempted. so I'll think I'll ignore this cookie. In general, "tracking cookie" is the least important security threat. |

Solve : Outlook express and news groups? |
Answer» ]In the news groups I ATTEMPT to block messages from certain users, set in RULES etc., but no matter what I do, the unwanted messages keep coming in. Anyone know what I'm overlooking? I'm using OE6.Unusual question; I've rarely seen questions about using OE for newsgroups. I've used OE for newsgroups, but never tried using Rules to filter newsgroup messages. I use Rules a lot for mail, but not newsgroups. When I used OE for newsgroup messages, I never saw a need to use Rules for them. I think I'd simply unsubscribe to a newsgroup if I did not want to RECEIVE messages from it. Exactly how are you creating your Rules? What Conditions did you specify? What Actions did you select? There is a BLOCK SENDER choice that never works. When I mentioned that to someone in a newsgroup they suggested I set in rules instead. The rules selection has two windows - the first is where you select something, like people in the FROM line, (This brings up the message author's email address), and the second window asks what you want to do with it. I always select DELETE IT. It appears each time I get messages from that user they should be deleted, but that doesn't happen. Microsoft's OE help doesn't address this for some reason. On an older version of OE, when I took a block sender action, it blocked them. And it also asked me if I wanted to delete all that person's messages. Neither of these happen any more. I want to be able to do this because the particular newsgroup (alt.astronomy) is full of trolls spouting garbish.Astronomy Trolls ? ? Who would have guessed that ? ? Have you considered switching back to a newsgroup reader ? ? Tucows FreebiesI've never used anything but OE, however, as your the second person to suggest a newsgroup reader from elsewhere, I've decided to go that route. And Tucows! Haven't been there in years! Thanks to all for the information.Glad you remember Tucows...a wealth of great stuff ! ! Let us know...Thanks to all, and Patio in particular. DOWNLOADED the NOWORYTA news reader from TUCOWS and installed it. I've only used it for a few minutes, so far, but it appears to do exactly what I what. It is nice to have a WORKING kill file!Good to hear you're fixed up...seeya SOON. |
