Solve : Add new hardware wizard - Microsoft XP?

Answer»

Hi,

New to the forum and hoping I am POSTING in the right section - if Im not im sorry - just tell me where I need to go..
I recently bought a new samsung phone which provides a usb lead to connect to your pc. I installed the software ok but when it came to install the driver the add new hardware wizard told me that it couldn't do it and that the data was invalid. Now I tried both using the cd provided and downloaded the driver from the samsung website and neither worked. Installed and uninstalled several times to no avail. Eventually decided that it must be a problem with samsung so I bought a bluetooth dongle instead. Today I installed the software ok but again when it came to installing the driver again I got the same message that there was a problem installing the hardware and that the data was invalid. I have spent about 6 hours trying to figure it out and I just can't. I RANG dell and they were no help whatsoever. The only CONCLUSION I can COME to is that the add new hardware wizard is corrupt and i need to get it fixed. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks... Siobhan

They are ".ART" files and ".CL3" files ".ART" is a vector graphics file and ".CL3" is an object based graphic file.hopefullly this help ya:

http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/artAs for ".ART" files, you should be able to open them with XnView:

As for ".CL3" files, they are most likely Adaptec/Sonic/Roxio "Easy CD Creator" LAYOUT Files (while making CDS), so you would have to have the above program to open them.thanks for the replies,
however, EasyCd later than version5 does not support CL3 anymore. I have a couple of hundred designs that I can't access.

Solve : windows media player / windows media center?

Answer»

How do you FIX the problem with windows media player ... I play a video and sometimes see MPMF.exe running on high CPU usage and when I run video on full screen, sometimes there is lag between audio/video or in general!

Do you recommend windows media center or some THIRD party programs like Cyberlink PowerDVD or WinDVD player?
What is MPMF.exe? (MediaPoint Manager?)
What Windows version? Computer specs, please, including video card info.Quote from: Broni on October 30, 2007, 10:26:47 PM

Sorry, I must be going blind...hehehe

As for your problem, it looks like you're not alone, and it's all connected to DRM (copyright) problems.
You can read here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1313722&SiteID=1
and a guy nicked "tiomeg" provides more links.

I wonder, if it would help, if you use different player, like Winamp, VLC, etc.In general, windows media player is fine, as it plays everything I THROW at it. It is just in those cases where the mfpmp problem happens and my CPU usage skyrockets upwards, especially at the full screen mode.

Do you recommend Windows Media Center? I like it's features, but it does not have DRM problem of windows media player? Or if not, what player you recommend that has nice appearance, does not eat up CPU and memory and ALSO plays all common video files, DVD and music files you throw at it?

And for windows vista home premium, do you recommend I get more memory than I already do have? I heard somwhere 2 GB is recommended while somewhere I heard 1.5 GB is sufficient, as the minimum 1GB is not enough for vista AND applications.VLC Player...

Or GOM.Quote
do you recommend I get more memory than I already do have?
Possibly...I have 2gig, and Vista works fine. You don't want to go over 3gig, because Vista won't really (practically) use anything over 3gig, EVEN with its limit of 4gig.

Solve : Microsoft Outlook - viewing jpg attachments on emails?

Answer»

When I was using Outlook Express, I was able to view jpg attachments on emails by simply scrolling down. Now I am using Microsoft Outlook and have to open each jpg attachment individually to view the pics. I much prefer the convenience of scrolling down to view the jpg attachments on emails. How is that reference supposed to help? I see nothing there that relates to his question.

debonair, I believe the answer to your question is no. I've searched through the settings in my Outlook 2003 and I see no option to view jpg attachments other than by opening them individually.

This is probably, at least in part, due to Outlook being a more secure email client than Outlook Express. Since jpg files have been used to disguise viruses, not automatically opening them, as in Outlook Express, means tighter security. Thanks for your response:) That ANSWERS my question. Not the answer I was hoping for but it makes sense. I tried the suggested link from the previous poster and found nothing related to my question. S/He must have not understood the question .soybean is right about security issue, but there may be a solution:

Quote
Users of Outlook 2003 will notice when they receive a message with images in it that, instead of seeing the image, they see TEXT that reads:

Right-click here to download picture. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.

This is due to a security feature in Outlook. As annoying as this might be I would caution you to consider leaving it as it is.

When viewing an e-mail with embedded images you need to keep in mind that these images are hosted on a web server somewhere on the Internet. In many ways this type of e-mail is like viewing a Web page and when you view them a request is sent from your computer to the computer that hosts the image.

With a simple piece of Web code embedded in the e-mail, an UNSCRUPULOUS advertiser can easily discern if your address is legitimate and active, leading to more spam e-mail.

In many cases the images are not a problem and you can quickly tell if the e-mail is something you trust or not. There are plenty of valid companies that use this method to include images in their messages and they collect no data from this practice.

To be on the safe side it might be prudent to just make the decision to view images on a case by case basis and go through this tiny little bit of extra effort. It's not like that index finger can't use the exercise.

However If you are not concerned with spam or the atrophying muscles in your clicking finger and you don't want to go through the extra motions to view images in e-mail then you can turn this security feature off RATHER easily.

Select Tools, Options and go to the Security tab. Click on the Change Automatic Download Settings button and make you changes.

Your long quote, which I did not repeat here, appears to be referring to the case where images are inserted into the body of the message by the sender, not as attachments. So, it does not apply to messages where pictures have been sent as attachments.

Solve : What is "System"?

Answer»

ok when you hit ctrl+alt+del it shows a list. in processes theres something called "System" not "System Idle Process" but just system. what is it? If you can point to an article that'd be cool. thanksIt is the root controller for the Admin account according to process EXPLORER...in other WORDS without it a bunch of stuff won't run.... patio its at 100% in another comp that i have. no matter what i do even if i get into Safe Mode. Stays constantly at 100 no matter what i do. any way to fix it?Depends on what Tab you are viewing in TASK Manager...in one of them the CPU % is always at 100% or all processes need to add up to that total.nah man its just that single process that takes up everything. everything is really slow. i've tried everything i can think of. no viruses on the comp or anything of that sort.DLoad and install Process Explorer...then spend some time in the Help file....you can view each single process and what other processes are running off it/ dependent on it etc.
There are 4 or 5 graph views you can use that may clarify things...i'm not convinced anything is wrong yet.
How does this machine run ? ?The klez worm, some trojans and backdoors cause it, ZoneAlarm can, try unplugging USB devices... the machine runs REALLY slow like it takes 1 hour to load up. and i already checked for viruses. no zonealarm on it and it has NO usb devices connected to itHDD could be dying.
hmm. well its been dying for a long time now. any way i can check to be sure?Quote from: Silencer RPMs on October 24, 2007, 11:23:59 AM

So have we all. Are you being facetious, or are you really saying that your hard drive has been SHOWING symptoms of failure for a while? If that is right, you are wasting a lot of time.

Quote
any way i can check to be sure?

You mean you can't quite believe it? Hardware-failure-denial is a familiar sight on this type of forum. Start in safe mode and run chkdisk /r c: from the command prompt.

1)hard drive has not been showing signs of failure. just having problems with the "system" in processes

2)I already did chkdsk /r.

I've had many hd's go bad on me so I'd think I would know.

Solve : Compressing a Microsoft Publisher 2007 file?

Answer»

I have begun publish a brochure on Microsoft Publisher. It will be in the 50-100 MB size RANGE. I can convert it into a pdf FORMAT. How do I compress such a sized pdf file so it can be sent via email with Outlook. I have winrar will that be suitable. And if it is, how do I use it?

Peter I don't think, you can compress it under 10MB. 10MB is usual max file size, which is allowed by your ISP.
Two choices:
- split a file into parts SMALLER, then 10MB, using Gsplit, for instance (http://www.gdgsoft.com/gsplit/)
- upload a whole file to a site like GigaSize (http://www.gigasize.com), and then you can send download link to your CLIENTS.

Solve : Bookmarks & Hyperlinks?

Answer» HI

In WORD (Office 2003), I have set up bookmarks which are linked to hyperlinks. Selecting CONTROL while pointing to the hyperlink takes me to the desired location but is there a shortcut that ALLOWS me to go back to the original location (original hyperlink) without having to scroll back through the ENTIRE document.

Thanks

Steve
I do not know what you mean by control. when i right click it just 7 options then hyperlink and you can add it to favorites or open it up in a new window. can you please be more specific?Sorry CONTROL is the control key. I am looking for a way to return to the hyperlink (which may be part of an index on the very first pages of a document) from where the hyperlink refers to. Otherwise it is a process of scrolling all the way back to the hyperlink at the start of the documents which can be numerous pages.

Thanks

SteveHome key.....or Alt -Activate the Web toolbar in Word. It contains Back and Forward buttons, same as a web browser.

To add the Web toolbar, right click on a blank part of your toolbar area and select it from the list.

Solve : µTorrent keeps Firefox from opening?

Answer»

If I Have µTorrent running and I try to launch Firefox it just won't open. As soon as I close µTorrent, Firefox opens. If I leave Firefox open and then launch µTorrent, Firefox won't load any sites. This started happening yesterday for no reason, I didn't change anything. It worked before WITHOUT any problem.Does same thing happen with IE?
Have you PLAYED recently with DNS, ports settings?
Firefox stops working, when you downloading something with µTorrent, or just when you open it?
Try Safe Mode.IE opens, but does not load anything. I also noticed that other programs can't access the internet, like MSN, or my antivirus program's updates. I haven't changed any internet-related settings. For this to happen, µTorrent has to be open. About safe mode, do you mean booting Windows into safe mode or running some program in safe mode?Quote from: Soviet Genius on October 30, 2007, 01:34:31 PM

...I haven't changed any internet-related settings. For this to happen, µTorrent has to be open. ...

But have you changed any of the settings within utorrent?
I wondering if it is using all the available bandwidth.

There are settings within utorrent's config for maximun number of connections, max up speed, and max down speed, among others.
Have you changed any of these recently?

If nothing else, try slowing the max speeds of utorrent, and lowering the max number of connections. Try a drastic experiment first.... cut them all way down. Then try your other internet apps. See if that makes a difference. If it does, then START raising the items you lowered, until you hit a happy medium.

Quote
About safe mode, do you mean booting Windows into safe mode or running some program in safe mode?
Yes.I haven't changed any settings. I doubt µTorrent is using all availible bandwidth, I am downloading one torrent which goes really slow, like 5-30 kbps. My connection is way better than that, I can get speeds up to 600 kbps, depending on the SERVER.

Solve : Help with Video card/ Direct 3DX?

Im having trouble playing video games on my labtop. When I try and play a certain game a message appears saying 'Direct 3D failed to initialise, please ensure you have a compatable Direct 3d card and driver. Ive tried reinstalling direct x 3d and updated the GRAPHICS card drivers however nothing has changed. I have a Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor, which im fairly sure supports Direct X 3D (chipset VIA PN800/PN880). Does anyone how i COULD solve this problem? or any other sites where I could try and update the drivers for this graphics card?
Thank you in advance for any answers to this problem. How much video memory do you have?
What are the game requirements? What is that game, anyway? Do other games play OK?
You downloaded your drivers from here:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070 ?The memory size is 64MB. The game im trying to play is Championship manager 2006, I INSTALLED it last year and it worked fine which is why im soo confused. The game requirements are 100% direct x8.1 compatible 4mb Direct x3d CardIs this Windows XP?
Do you have DirectX 9.0 installed?
How about that driver link, I gave you?Its windows vista (32 i think). Ive installed the latest direct x 10 but it didnt make i difference. I downloaded the driver however im not 100% its installed proberly it may sound stupid but im not sure if ive installed it correctly.I'm skeptical that a game written in 2005/2006 will run in Vista...
I'm not finding any info even on CM2008 that SAYS it will run on Vista.Another thing to try is to run it in Win XP mode....

Solve : Can a workbook be unsaved from Microsoft Excel??

Answer»

I think I already know this answer but I thought it might be worth a query to those who are more proficient with Excel (I consider myself a very basic user).

I was working with Excel and wanting to copy part of a workbook into another one and save it with a DIFFERENT name. I made all the changes/deletions that I wanted to show in the new workbook (but keeping the original info in the original workbook) and then I hit "Save" instead of "Save As". All of my original workbook information was lost (and it is really cruical). Is there anyway to "unsave" a workbook. I ran a search and the original document does appear but I can't go anywhere with it. Help anyone?Quote from: redbeard52 on OCTOBER 04, 2007, 12:07:58 PM

I ran a search and the original document does appear but I can't go anywhere with it.
Exactly what does that mean? Can you open that "original document"? Does it have your old data?If you leave the workbook open, you can simply Undo (CTRL + Z). However, once you close it, I believe you are stuck with those changes.First a very belated but heartfelt "Thank You" to Soybean and CB Matt. Due to a family medical emergency, I've been away and unable to access my email until today.

To answer your question, Soybean; Yes, the workbook had old and very valuable data. To CBMatt; Unfortunately, I had closed the workbook and could not use the "undo" or "Ctrl Z" feature. I appreciate your attempts to help me but I feel this is a lost cause. If either of you (or anyone else for that matter) can think of a way to recapture that old data, please let me know. I hate to say it, but I don't think there's any way you can retrieve that old data at this point. It might be possible that System Restore has an old copy of your file saved, but the chance of that is very low. When working with important information, you should ALWAYS save a backup copy (I've gotten into the habit of saving every spreadsheet under two different names). And when you want to start a new workbook, always open up a new file instead of editing a pre-existing one. I'm sorry, I wish I had a better solution for you.To CBMatt:

Of course it's a lesson I learned too late, but I've now backed up all my workbooks and I'm considering your point of saving them under 2 seperate names. That would be additional protection for any missteps I might make in the future. Thanks again for your help and input.

Solve : Can't watch youtube! Problem with flash??

Answer»

Hi guys. I'm hoping someone can help me here

I can no longer watch youtube on nay on my browsers. And it seems to me as if it randomly happened, without me having done anything in the meantime, which is the strange thing. I'm going to try and attach pics to explain the problem

Ok firstly, if i go on the homepage of youtube, the video in the top right corner is already streaming, so if i click on play it works. for example in the screenshot, there was a "SAW" trailer, and i could play it, see attachment 1

Ok but then when I go and search for any other video and click on it, the following message appears "You have either Javascript tuned off, or you have an old version of adobe flash player. Get the latest version here"

So I download it, but still NOTHING happens.

Its the same on internet explorer, as well as MOZILLA. any ideas as to why I CANT use youtube no more. I dont know about how to "turn on javascript"here's a screenshot showing i can watch videos on the home PAGE (see top right corner)

[getting space - attachment deleted by admin]here's a screenshot of the message that appears when i try to access otehr videos

[getting space - attachment deleted by admin]and finally this shows i have installed flash already, so that does not seem to be the problem

[getting space - attachment deleted by admin]Okay first lets check if you have Javascript enabled.
In Firefox goto Tools and select Options.
Select the Content tab.
Make sure the box NEXT to Enable JavaScript is checked.

You can also try this JavaScript test.
http://liblearn.osu.edu/tutor/jscript.html

If JavaScript is functioning you should get a popup.yep, its enable on my tools option, and also the pop-up appears. any other ideas?Uninstall Flash, reinstall. There are known issues with a few of the latest versions of flash...

Travel HereYou definitely needed to install the latest version of Adobe/macromedia flash player... and enable javascript. the above users' advice is all you need move to flash player 8..worked for me coz i was also exp similar problem.

Solve : captured video is blurry...HELP!!?

Answer»

So try to put the video on the memory stick then on the COMPUTER?Yes, just to see if it's a problem with the heads of the camcorder or the cassettes.OK so I recorded ONTO the memory stick instead of cassette and it is NOT blurry when uploading.
The thing is with the cassettes.....I recorded the first video fine....then tried the next one (months later and in a new house) and it's blurry...so I went back to the first one to see if that was the problem and that one was blurry too....which made me assume it was some sort of setting or screw up on my part hooking the computer back up...
So maybe it's the heads?Well that's some good news...

If you're recording to cassette & the playback on your Camcorder from the cassette is fine, then I would say that it isn't a problem with the cassettes or the camcorder heads - it has to be something to do with the way the data is transfered from the cassette to the PC.

I need to know exactly the method you USED to transfer from the cassette. I wouldn't have thought that the cassette is recognised by the PC through a USB directly. When you connect the camcorder to the PC via a USB, I would think the PC is looking for the memory stick - unless Sony has a way of transfering the cassette through the USB via ram or something (I'm no expert).

I would have presumed that you would need to dub (transfer) the cassette to the memory stick on the camcorder first, then transfer, unless you play the cassette on the camcorder & record to the PC live.

If you do have to dub the cassette to memory stick prior to transferring to the PC, then you might aswell just record directly to the memory stick (note that the sound will be mono though). When you connect the camcorder (without a memory stick) to the PC, does the PC recognise it? (do you get an icon/pop up bubble in the TASKBAR at the bottom right appear).

Also, were you having to run some kind of Sony software to transfer from the Camcorder? No, I never had to run any Sony software. When I connect the camcorder by USB, it says new hardware found. Then my video editing software just recognizes it when I go to capture it.
I am using only a USB to put the video on the computer....that is exactly what I did the first time. I just play the video on the camera and and hit capture on the video editing software.....exactly what I did the first time as well. I do not have a big enough memory stick to hold a lot of video and I cannot figure out how to transfer already taped video onto the memory stick. I see, so you're recording it live (capturing) & not really transfering a file as such.

I would seriously recommend getting a larger memory stick to save you time (you can pick them up cheap on ebay) as you would only have to copy/cut the movie file as apposed to playing the camcorder back/capturing it in real time (but you I'm sure you already knew that).

Anyway, if you would like to transfer video from the cassette to the memory stick, it's page 91 of the manual (dubbing selected scenes from a tape) you can get the manual from here.

Still, we need to sort this capturing from the cassette business out.

If when you ATTACH a device & you get a 'found new hardware' message, it could mean that you don't have any drivers installed for it.

Did you install any drivers from a CD that came with the camcorder or anything? Amazingly, there is nothing in the manual about connecting to a PC (what I can find atleast).

I found the drivers here

Install the drivers and then connect the camcorder, then try to capture again.

Good luckwill try that...thanks...
I thick the "connecting tho the PC: manual was a separate one....I remember there being 2 manuals when I first started this process. I'll try installing the drivers and update back :-)

Solve : Asigning task to outlook from Excel?

Answer»

In my work we uses a Task and proejct list. I want to optimise this by adding a macro to do the following:

The new CURRENT task must be sent to the task folder in Outlook. the folder could belong to somebody else.
Use initials/e-mail adress for sending this task to this person.
use DUE date to put up a reminder in the task.

Looking forward to hear from some body So, do you have this Task and proejct list in Excel? What's the Excel connection here? Your work place is on an Exchange server for Outlook, right?

Yes, the task list is in excel with a column for the activity owner, deadline etc. This I want to assign to the activity owner as a outlook task, and yes, we are working on an exchange server.Well, your question is beyond my scope of knowledge. I use Outlook but not in an Exchange environment. I use Excel and have created macros in it but have not created macros that work ACROSS MS OFFICE applications, such as you're trying to do between Excel and Outlook.

I believe macros can work across MS Office applications. But, I also believe what you want to do will probably REQUIRE some knowledge of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and how to use the Visual Basic Editor in MS Office to create a rather complex macro.

I tried searching Google on Assigning task to outlook from Excel; I found numerous sources on using Excel for managing task assignments or using Outlook for it, but could not find references on integrating Excel and Outlook for this purpose.

Solve : YAHOO IM Downloading Problems...?

Answer»

Everytime I try to download Yahoo IM onto my pc, it will download for a short time, then the message will appear saying that the connection has been interupted or stopped and asks if I WANT to retry or abort. When I click on "Retry", the download BAR shifts from SHOWING a partially installed report to a suddenly 100% completed download bar, but then nothing happens. I know there's no way it's going from like 7% downloaded to 100% THAT fast! Are you taking note of the location to which the file is being downloaded? After the procedure "finished", did you browse to that location to see whether the setup file is there?

What type of Internet connection (dialup, CABLE, DSL) do you have? Are you able to download other large files without problems? What's you OS? What browser are you using when downloading? Where are you getting the Yahoo! Messenger file?

I have an Acer laptop and believe that this is a problem related to them, has anyone elese come across this before and know how to fix it?
That file BELONGS to Ontrack's Fix-it Utilities Suite. It's a third-party anti-virus program that often comes with Acer computers. Personally, I think you're better off with having AVG instead of Fix-it or McAfee. AVG is free and it works a lot better. If you don't need Ontrack's Fix-it Utilities Suite, feel free to remove it with Add/Remove Programs. This should fix the problem. Also, check THIS PAGE and make sure Norton is properly removed. I would also remove McAfee and replace it with AVG or another free alternative, but that's up to you.

Solve : Lost files from Outlook Express?

Answer»

I was working to clean up some files from Outlook Express, the 2004 EDITION. I thought I could figure out how to back them up myself, which apparatnly was kind of dumb. I found the files and burned them to a CD, but now when I try to open them (they open in Outlook 07) they open a new contacts SCREEN. Worse, I accidentally CLICKED "Move Files" instead of "Copy Files" so now I can't even access them from Outlook Express. I tried copying them from the CD to the orginal FOLDER, but Outlook still doesn't show them. Please tell me there's a way to get my data back!

Thanks!

There is no such thing. So, please clarify.

And, please review your post and be precise in distinguishing between Outlook Express and Outlook. They are not the same thing.

Solve : WMP is SLOW?

Answer»

Hi All,

I have Windows XP SP2 running on my computer. How can I tell Windows XP to load the "Classic" version of Windows MEDIA Player without uninstalling the "NEW" version of WMP? Thank you.download the classic one and uninstall the SP2 -,-'Please ignore tommy gusack.
Service PACK 2 for XP contains many important security fixes and general improvements for the OS and is needed in order to receive the latest fixes for XP.

What do you mean by the "classic" version of WMP dairyman? Version 10?I mean the one in Windows 98.You would need to change XP to classic view.
To do this open Windows Explorer and select Tools/Folder Options. In there you will SEE the settings for Classic View.
This will change everything.
I prefer it though.Nothing changed. It still opens with the new version of WMP.If you have installed a newer version of WMP this has replaced the old version. So as far as I know there is no way to do what you want. OK, I won't s**ew up my computer again by messing about with REGEDIT - my favorite Windows tweaking utility .

Funny, but everytime I WRITE a new topic, the problem is fixed by itself. Interesting...

Thank's guys.

Solve : Windows Vista security locked my folders and files?

Answer»

I had some personal files and FOLDERS I wanted locked so I right clicked on a the folder that had all of them in there. Went to the security tab and hit deny, I thought for everyone else but me. Well now when I try to go in and look at them my computer says I do not have the permissions. I was finally unable to unlock that folder, then a few folders inside of it. I have thousands of files in this mother...... and I can't be going into each one, one at a time unlocking it. I really don't even know how I unlocked most of them, just random luck I think. So mostly I need to know how to unlock the whole folder and all the files so that I have access to them again. Otherwise how do I unlock each one individually. I have windows xp that come with a new HP laptop, the files I had placed in an external hard drive. Please help me, some of these files I need instant access too and soon.PS. if you could tell me how to put my trash can back on my desktop I would appreciate it. I accidently deleted it.There is no Deny option in Security tab. What exactly did you do?There is a deny. You right click on a folder. Go to properties. Go to the security tab. In the middle of the tab you will see "edit." When you go in to that you will see the ability to CHECK or uncheck features. For each user on the computer. I remember unchecking the ability for anyone else besides my adminstrator ACCOUNT to see the files. But it won't LET me see them.

Solve : Trouble Shooting .NET Framework repair?

Answer»

I thought I was very organized and ready to start repair procedures for my .NET Framework, I had printed all the instructions and downloaded all the files I need, but I am stumped with the Windows INSTALLER SDK (ZAP), and how to use it PROPERLY. Here are the instructions I am following:

a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open text box, type cmd, then click OK.
c. At the command prompt, locate the directory that contains the Msizap.exe utility, and then run the following commanmd: Msizap TP {CB2F7EDD-9D1F-43C1-90FC-4F52EAE172A1}
d. Restart your computer.

Currently Windows Installer SDK is located on my computer here:
c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Received Files\Windows Installer SDK (ZAP)\PSDK-FULL

I am inserting a screenshot of the box that comes up when I type cmd in the Open text box (hopefully this works, I've NEVER needed to insert a pic in here before)

OK, I just checked the preview of this post, and apparently I don't know how to post an image from my pc, because it's not showing up??

What EXACTLY do I have to type for this to work correctly??
I apologize if I've posted this in the wrong catagory, I wasn't sure where this topic belonged?

[GETTING space - attachment DELETED by admin]I'm not sure why, if you want to repair NET, you won't just uninstall it, download a fresh version, and install it, but...
To answer your question, at:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>
type:
cd My Documents\My Received Files
Hit Enter
Now, you should see:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Received Files>
Type:
dir
Hit Enter to see, if your file is there.Quote from: CrankyCheryl on October 27, 2007, 11:17:38 AM

Solve : system restore & reloading windows XP with old CD?

Answer»
I am trying to reload my windows CD disk HOWEVER, I get a message telling me that the windows program I have in my system is newer then my CD disk. I know there is a way around this but, I don't remember how to do it. Can someone please help me with this.

also can't USE my system restore program? will SP2 reload this program?WELCOME to the CH forums.

The installed version of XP is newer than that on your cd because it has been UPDATED. You'd have to uninstall SP.2 - see here for various methods.

But why do you WANT to redo the installation? It's a lot of work to reinstall/repair then get all the necessary updates again.

What program do you mean?

I assume that you have a full copy of the XP cd not a recovery version.

FYI there's a good read here.

Good luck.Slipstreaming XP SP2

Solve : Microsoft Publisher 2007?

Answer»

I am trying to publish a catalogue in PUBLISHER 2007. How do I insert page numbers in my catalogue, beginning on page#3, AS Page #1 and CONTINUING consequetively to the end (Page #58). Why you ask? Because there is a cover, which should not be numbered and the inside cover also not to be numbered. So paging would BEGIN with page #3.

PeterI'm not very familiar with Publisher and the version I have is 2003. But, by default, the number is not printed on the cover page, is it? And, I just discovered, while looking at one of the catalog templates in Publisher, that the page numbers on pages following the cover are deletable objects. I can just click on the page number, CAUSING a Text box border/control tool to appear, and then HIT Delete. That removes that object; this can be applied to only the page immediately following the Cover page, and the remaining pages can be left alone.

Does that all seem to apply to Publisher 2007? The key issue I'm having is getting the third page to begin the numbering process as Page #1, followed by the fourth page numbered as Page #2, the fifth page numbered as Page #5, etc, etc.

PeterSorry, I don't know how you can do that. I can't find a way to do it in Pub. 2003, after searching the Help topics.Soybean thanks for trying!!!!

Solve : Windows Media Player (WMP) v10 versus v11 and childrens MP3 player.?

Answer»

My child Disney MP3 Player has a plug-in disk to load. The instructions are explicit; the player will only work properly if ONLY WMP v10 is installed. I already have v11 installed rendering the toy useless. There are provisions within v11 that lead me to believe I can revert back to v10. Those instructions are not clear to me at all.

Has ANYONE encountered a problem like this before. Please; no experiments, I can do that on my own. I'm mostly worried about what will happen to all the files in WMP and files saved to CD-RW using WMP v11.

I went to a Microsoft forum to address my problem but they haven't responded. Thanks for your help. T. What version of Windows are you using?Windows XP Home v5.1Click here and follow the instructions.
I hope this helps you. Thanks so far. This is why everything is confusing... First go to WMP v10. After the page asks you to verify your legitamate lisence, just under that it gives instructions for people like me that have v11 and need v10. It does discuss a beta version of 11 and is different from your instructions specifically; NOTE: do not uninstall WMP v11 Runtime. It speaks about protected files.

The new instructions you sent have nothing to say about the runtime file. Am I supposed to delete both of the WMP v11 files?

I MIGHT be picking at little pieces here but thats why I am soliciting your advise. NEITHER set of intructions state (to my understanding) that I will still be able to play all my PREVIOUSLY saved v11 files. That is all my 8 year old's music I've already copied to disk.

Are you implying that I won't have to reburn all the mp3 music if I follow your set of instructions to revert to v10? Thats just where I am confused. I'd hate to waste your time by asking to many questions that should seemingly be obvious to me. Thanks. T.The instructions that I have given you are perfectly fine.
Follow them exactly, and it'll be OK.
Anything it TELLS you to do, do it.
If it doesn't say to do it, then don't.

I've followed the same instructions before to revert from v11 to v10, and it worked fine.
You will not need to reburn music or anything else, all the music or video files that worked with v11 will work with v10 as well. Thanks, I appreciate that. I have confidence now. And my daughter will be happy as well. T.You're more than welcome.
Let us know how it works out, anyway, and whether you need any further assistance.Feeling kind of smug here over this information. I know my iRiver worked with WMP10, so I decided to say NO every time it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to WMP11.

The old saying, IF IT ISN'T BROKE, DON"T FIX IT, has never been truer than with computers.Personally, I don't like WMP11, for the interface alone.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" works fine for me too mostly.

Solve : IE opens on its own numerous times?

Answer»

OK, so I know just about enough to be dangerous.
My sister calls me all the time with this problem.
When she turns on her computer her IE opens numerous times
on its own. What are the possible causes of this?

I have ADVISED her to make sure she has a spyware program,
(she didn't have one) . Also she has a teenager that downloaded
a lot of video CHATROOMS, other junk, etc.

We removed all the extra programs, but still, the problem
persists.

I won't be able to supply any logs at this time since she's in
a different state, but, let me know if you have any idea
what would cause this and how I can help her troubleshoot.

Thanks!! She probably needs to download a free spyware program; Ad Aware, Spybot etc. unless she already did. If she downloaded one have her run a full spyware scan with it.She also needs to sign in here, so we can TALK to her directly. What OS do they have on that computer? Do they have a firewall enabled?

This sounds like a major spyware infestation, one that's going to take multiple tools to cleanup. I'd also find out whether they have their Windows CD. A mess like this is often BEST resolved by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows.A few years AGO, when I had an adware infestation, about 100 duplicate pages of IE and my home page opened up and I had to close them all, then restart my computer. But about a week later I was notified that a Trojan Horse had attacked my computer, which could be the issue, I'm not sure if what happened with Ie was related to the trojan but to a Gain adware program on my computer, most likely the adware. but maybe she should scan for viruses to be safe.

Solve : Leading Zeros in a .CSV?

Answer»

Hi

I am exporting some data from Access to a CSV ( I need this to be a CSV to import into a bespoke program). Anyway I need some data to hold leading ZEROS but Excel takes these out. I can format the cells to include these but it will not save as a CSV.

Can anyone help at all please? Why do you need to run the data through Excel? Why can't you export your data from Access and then import it to your "bespoke" program? The program imports a CSV FILE that I need to CREATE. I run a query in Access and export as CSV. This automatically opens in Excel WITHOUT the leading zeros. I am trying allsorts to put them back in but to no avail at the moment.I've MANAGED to fix this problem. The trick is not to open in Excel. Thanks for your help.Yes, I was going to ask why you said "This automatically opens in Excel" and suggest that that should not be necessary and not doing so will avoid the problem. Anyway, glad to hear you got it sorted out.

Solve : Outlook 2000 import/export returns all deleted items?

Answer»

I hope that I can explain this properly.
I'm toggling between two offices (home and work) I'm using outlook 2000 on both (my) PC's.
Outlook WORKS for me very well but what I'm trying to do is to update all my tasks and calendar stuff between the two machines.

So I export my entire PERSONAL folder to an external drive (jump drive) and then import it to the other outlook personal folders file on the other PC. It seems that, no MATTER how I work it, it always re-installs all of the calendar items I've deleted, even when I just export and then import back to the same PC!
During the import and export I'm choosing "Replace duplicates with items exported" rather than "Allow duplicates to be created" or "Do not import/export duplicate items" because it seems like that "replace" option would change the dates of items I've updated or moved on the calendar, which is what I want.

I've also tried an archive back up and then just dump the old and reinstall the new - it was madeningly complex and unsuccessful.

Is there a better way to toggle between two machines? Or will I have to settle for assigning one "home" base PC and fly blind when I'm away from it?

If not for this issue - which clutters my calendar and increases file size - I could conquer the world.

thanks for any help.
JCWelcome to the CH forums.

I think you could be looking down the barrel at "File Synchronization" on which I have minimal experience. There's a good beginners article here and lots more on the WWW.

Good luck.Yeah, that's the ticket!
"File Synchronization"
In the link you provided I read about that long lost silly little gizmo called breifcase. It IS the thing I need to use. Who'da thunk that stupid archaic looking gimicky little thing would actually come in handy? And very handy it is indeed. All these years I've been over-burdening myself with uneeded hours and tasks of rename/copy/delete, etc. It even helps me transport and update my 3D CAD files. I've been searching for a long time for a system I can trust and this has BECOME a part of it.
Now if I could just do something to make it look not so early ninties.
Thank you very much for helping me to sort this out.

Now onto conquer the world.

JCYou're more than welcome.

Thanks for COMING back at us to advise of your success, lots of posters just vanish.

Solve : Microsoft Excel 2000?

Answer»

I have the strangest thing HAPPENING. I am on a network server. We have several different FOLDERS on the network. Well whenever there is just a DOCUMENT FLOATING out there on the network (not in any folder), and whether it is a word, excel or whatever document, when I try to open a excel document excel tries to open all the floating documents first even though I didnt tell it to open any of them. I think there is a GHOST in my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me crazy.Quote

Could you be a tad more specific. All files live in folders (even if it's the root folder). Are these documents in a directory used for repairing documents when Excel could not complete an operation (ex. a macro misfired)?

Let us know.

Solve : Norton antivirus problem..HELPPP?

Answer»

it can be,but why need to gave your money to them since we have LOTS of av free?
here's my choice and im using it,
http://www.avira.de/en/download/index.html
and for spy ware protection
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.htmlI have Spybot search and destroy to remove malware, but do I need another spyware program? I don't think Norton does much to remove spyware because last time I scanned with spybot It detected a program that disables my windows firewall, and norton never alerted me of that paritcular program during it's monthly system scans. As recommended:

Antivirus: AVG Free
Spyware & Adware: AVG Anti-Spyware
Firewall: Comodo, PC Tools Firewall Plus

Take your pick. They're all free. They're all good.Hey this is Tom. I'm a newby also. So if I say something without a huge knowledge base that isn't totally accurate, I'm sure the old guys will let me know. First off, you should be running something like LavaSoft SE (free) also. You can run as many malware programs you want to. I believe they are passive in nature. They will only run and identify problems when asked to. I also run Window's Defender. I'm sure there is a point when it all can be over done. One fellow recommended additional freeware (read previous posts).

Now Norton and Firewalls. It happens by default but you should always check... You should auto (recommended) disable your window's firewall when your using (and you should be using) the firewall in Nortons software. Check to make sure Norton is "enabled" and Window firewall disabled. If you don't they (Windows & Norton) will compete amoungst eachother and I would say, something one day will fail. That is just rule of thumb when it comes to firewalls. You may just happen to be looking at your windows firewall properties and discovered it is turned off. Just make sure Nortons is enabled.

Also remember to stay online with "Microsoft Windows Update" and keep your O/S up to date with its own security features. Thats important.
I HOPE this newbie has done something good. T.
Hey thanks i didn't know that! so windows firewall SHOULD be disabled if i'm using Norton??? ahhh I think I found my problem! You use ONE firewall, and ONE antivirus, ONLY.
As for antispyware programs, use as many, as you want.
I use one in real-time - Spyware Terminator, plus from time to time, I scan my computer with Spybot, and Ad-aware. Two of them, because often one finds what other misses, and also sometimes antispyware program will report some false-positive, so I'll check that particular entry with other program.I agree, 1 a/v and 1 f/w. Everything else at your own discretion. With your corroboration, I now know I wasn't giving any false information. All the above information is quite useful...yet keep the following in mind. I know it's already been said, but let's recant...

  • You can use a hardware and a software firewall at the same time. For example...if you have a router configured with your system, the router usually has a built in firewall...this would be your hardware firewall. Your software firewall can be the built-in Windows firewall on your system, or a third-party program like Norton or Comodo. Remember...only run one software firewall...since running MULTIPLES can cause system instability and crashes. Also remember...it is not really necessary to use a software firewall if your computer is connected to the Internet via a router...since the router has its own firewall. Most people use the default Windows firewall for extra protection, but it does not warn you if other applications are accessing the Internet without your knowledge. That is why most use a third-party firewall...so they have control over the applications that need access to the Internet. One drawback to this is that most people don't know what programs need access to the Internet and usually end up blocking a file or program and then wonder why they are having problems with certain software on their computers. So make sure you read and understand the documentation that comes with your third-party software. Also make sure the Windows firewall is turned off, if you intend to use a third-party software firewall.
  • Only install one antivirus program...again, multiples will cause system instability and/or crashes.
  • A lot of people have more than one spyware/adware software program installed on their computer. This really isn't necessary. either. Find one which is top-rated and free...to save some bucks. Configure and use it. That's all you need to do. The more paranoid one gets about malware, the more "crap" they install on their computer and, again, wonder why their computer is not functioning properly.
  • Remember...if you have more than one spyware/adware software program installed...only use one to actively scan your computer, while the others are there for backup...do not configure them to actively scan...otherwise, we're talking system instability again.
  • If you have your antivirus and spyware/adware software configured to run automatic scans...do not let them both run at the same time. Configure one to run at a certain time...giving it enough time to finish its scan. Configure the other to run before or after the other...again, giving it enough time to finish its task.
  • Stay on top of the UPDATES for your malware protection...making sure you have the latest definitons base for both your antivirus and spyware/adware software.
  • Also make sure your third-party firewall software (if installed) is kept up-to-date as well.
  • More than ever...make sure your Windows operating system is set to receive updates automatically and install them when they become available...do not put this off because you were in the middle of something. Stop what you're doing...save whatever you were working on...close any open programs...and install the updates.

Personally, I have all of my malware protection set to automatic, but still like to open these programs and manually check for updates. I like to have complete control over my computer and not rely on the software to do its job. Consider it overkill, but better safe than sorry.

Sorry about rambling, but I just though you'd get a better understanding, if there were a little more detail about the subject.

Good luck to you...ohhh thanks!!!! I only have spybot as my spyware program, and norton for viruses, but it hasn't worked well at all lately which is why I'll probably uninstall it.The only reason I haven't is because I like to try hard to fix something before getting rid of it, I'm very conservative. ..... Also, I have a quick question, when Norton scans my enitre computer system, it always detects a tracking cookie, which Norton says has been fixed but each time it scans that same cookie shows up requiring attention I tried to remove the cookie through Windows add/remove a program wizard, but I cannot find it's filename..I know it belongs to the ad.yield.manager or something, from those annoying ads on websites. I was thinking about using windows explorer to delete it but i don't know how risky it is to do it that way.The first thing I did was go to wikipedia.com and plugged in "tracking cookie". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracking_cookie From there you can get detailed information all about tracking cookies. At this point, I don't see any reason to be alarmed. First, If spy-bot is not paying attention to it, it means to me it doesn't recognize it as a problem. Secondly, I think norton puts on a display of "required attention items" in order for you to think that they are so wonderful you couldn't live without them. Something like a liberal democrat. Norton will put on a display whether you like it or not.

Maybe finally if it is just plane bugging you, you can adjust your security settings alittle tighter in Windows; Tools; Internet Options. After you read the article, you may become more comfortable but find after you've tightenned your security settings to high. You may find it more difficlt to navigate the web if they are set to high. Example; I set my setting one day in the middle of the month "higher then default". At the end of the month, I wanted to access my bank but couldn't. It was my security setting set to high even thought their https: url was in my approved sites.

I hope this helps. T Quote
The only reason I haven't is because I like to try hard to fix something before getting rid of it, I'm very conservative.

Not to poke fun or make light of things but if you apply this approach to Norton you have alot of work to do...
They have a few hundred people who get paid to show up everyday and do the same thing and look how far they've gotten.

As far as the tracking cookie this could be showing up each time for a number of reasons...your homepage, any online games that are installed, a piece of hardware phoning home for updates etc.

List the name of the cookie and that will help narrow it down.

p.s. I would consider adding AdAware to your package...also Free. No one scanner gets it all which is why a multi-level approach is best. You neither poked fun nor made light of. This site is designed for just those ideas.

I agree adding Ad-Aware SE will remove the same cookie everytime (and alot more). I use it. The point I tried to make was essentually what you said. It is a matter of your surfing habits. Norton is a pain in the *censored*. The cookie will be there every seesion your done on line. If it is a harmless cookie (average TAC. 3.00), we have nothing to worry about. Spybot didn't care. The only time I see a problem is if your bogged down with some many that is slows the sysytem down some. Anyway, I think he was just really worried if he had a problem or not. The consensus is he doesn't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracking_cookie again, the information in this link should clear up all kinds of questions. Hey thanks! that was some great info there! the cookie is from an adyieldmanager site, and even Norton says it's risk level was LOW and not attempted. so I'll think I'll ignore this cookie. In general, "tracking cookie" is the least important security threat.

Solve : VSE Problem?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

Running Windows XP Service Pack 2 here. I downloaded a program CALLED Vista Startmenu Emulator and decided to take it for a "test drive". So I unzipped the contents of the ZIP folder, run the program and noticed the icon in the System Tray.

It was FULLY loaded into memory, but one problem. When I clicked on the start menu, I get the following error message:

Application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security POLICY. To grant this application the required permission, CONTACT your system administrator, or use the Microsoft .NET Framework Configuration tool.

I'm the administrator, I checked the configuration, the d**ned thing don't work!!
What should I do?

Thank you.

Have a read here:

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/12/27/vista-start-menu-emulator/

and here:

http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=5234

From the jist of the articles it seems that the application is not ready for prime-time. I'd uninstall it.

Alan <>< Thank you, Alan.

Solve : wich firewall??

Answer»

im on windows xp and installed norton internet anti VIRUS . the windows security centre has a firewall and so does the norton . they conflict when they are both on and complain when one is TURNED off saying computer is at risk. its needless for them both to be on and its a conflict anyhow so, wich one is best ? wich to have and why please. thanksIs your computer connected to the internet? I will suggest you GO for norton. How are you connected to the Internet? Thru a router? If so then that router should have a hardware firewall on it.

The lesser of TWO evils is the M$ firewall. I've not used Norton ANYTHING for years because I've SEEN too many problems created by their software.

Alan <>< Norton of course

Solve : Outlook express and news groups?

Answer» ]In the news groups I ATTEMPT to block messages from certain users, set in RULES etc., but no matter what I do, the unwanted messages keep coming in.

Anyone know what I'm overlooking? I'm using OE6.
Unusual question; I've rarely seen questions about using OE for newsgroups. I've used OE for newsgroups, but never tried using Rules to filter newsgroup messages. I use Rules a lot for mail, but not newsgroups. When I used OE for newsgroup messages, I never saw a need to use Rules for them. I think I'd simply unsubscribe to a newsgroup if I did not want to RECEIVE messages from it.

Exactly how are you creating your Rules? What Conditions did you specify? What Actions did you select?
There is a BLOCK SENDER choice that never works. When I mentioned that to someone in a newsgroup they suggested I set in rules instead.

The rules selection has two windows - the first is where you select something, like people in the FROM line, (This brings up the message author's email address), and the second window asks what you want to do with it. I always select DELETE IT.

It appears each time I get messages from that user they should be deleted, but that doesn't happen.

Microsoft's OE help doesn't address this for some reason.

On an older version of OE, when I took a block sender action, it blocked them. And it also asked me if I wanted to delete all that person's messages. Neither of these happen any more.

I want to be able to do this because the particular newsgroup (alt.astronomy) is full of trolls spouting garbish.Astronomy Trolls ? ?

Who would have guessed that ? ?

Have you considered switching back to a newsgroup reader ? ?

Tucows FreebiesI've never used anything but OE, however, as your the second person to suggest a newsgroup reader from elsewhere, I've decided to go that route.

And Tucows! Haven't been there in years!

Thanks to all for the information.Glad you remember Tucows...a wealth of great stuff ! !
Let us know...Thanks to all, and Patio in particular. DOWNLOADED the NOWORYTA news reader from TUCOWS and installed it. I've only used it for a few minutes, so far, but it appears to do exactly what I what.

It is nice to have a WORKING kill file!Good to hear you're fixed up...seeya SOON.

Solve : cant delete tool?

Answer»

i recently downloaded a password recovery tool called cain & abel, and now i cant delete it. can SOMEONE please help? im running windows xpdo you install it?or it works without installing?have you check in add or remove?isn't there an option to uninstall?what happen if you leave the program in the computer, does it harm? The User Manual which is included with the program also can be found here...see the bottom of the page.Uninstallation
You can uninstall Cain from the Add/Remove Programs tool in the Control Panel or by directly executing the unistallation program. The uninstall program will not remove the Abel service.

Abel Uninstallation
You can remove the Abel Service using Cain's Service Manager; first stop the service and then remove it.

Did you happen to see this in the info from Patio"the reason i couldnt delete it is because i dont think it downloaded right cus when i would open the "application" , the command prompt would pop up. i would try to delete it by draggin it to the bin, but it would say that i couldnt. well, anyways, i finally deleted it using hijackthis. i JUS found it kinda weird that i couldnt delete it, so i jus kinda freaked out. thanks for the help thoughIt'd be recommended to post your HJT log, to see if it's clean...Logfile of TREND Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA)
