Solve : How to change the order in which folders appear??

Answer»

Is there a way I can do this? I want certain accounts to appear at the top of the list. I do not use the Local Folders - so I want that to move to the bottom.

TIA.
We need more info. "Local Folders" in what application? What version of Windows?DAH...truly sorry - my fault...this has to do with Outlook Express 6.0.

I am using OE to access multiple email accounts, such as GMAIL and Hotmail.Quote from: musicollector on February 06, 2008, 10:41:06 AM

I do not use the Local Folders - so I want that to move to the bottom.
That doesn't make sense to me. "Local Folders" is the main OE folder containing ALL email folders; this would include the STANDARD OE folders (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, etc.) and any additional folders you CREATE. So, naturally, it's going to be at top.

You have two main options for organizing mail from multiple accounts. One technique is using Message Rules to direct mail from certain senders or certain accounts into specific folders. So, you have a folder for Hotmail and another folder for Gmail and then use Rules to direct the mail from each account into the appropriate folder. Or, it could be more detailed than this, with folders for specific senders, not just specific mail accounts.

The other technique would be to create a separate Identity for each account. To add an Identity, go to File, Identities.Perhaps I should have ASKED whether your Gmail account is set up as POP3 or IMAP. I have a Gmail account and just changed it from POP3 to IMAP. I see that OE creates/adds all the Gmail folders at the bottom of all the POP3 folders I have in OE. In contrast to POP3 folders which are all part of Local Folders, IMAP folders get added as a separate group below the POP3 folders, below Local Folders.

I have many POP3 folders for other accounts and I can see why you'd like to move Local Folders to the bottom. But, I don't believe it can be done. The best solution seems to be to simply collapse Local Folders so that it only takes one line. I thought so. It doesn't make sense to me that the Local folder, which uses POP3, should be hard coded to appear at the top for people who use IMAP, who have nothing to do with POP3.

Thank you very much.

Solve : best free software?

good day
i have just bought a laptop for the first time and do not know where to download free software, can any body HELP please.
[emailprotected]WELCOME to the CH forums.

Please immediately remove your e-mail address or you will be spammed forever.

For downloads - depends what you want - you could have a look at Download.com

Good luck
download.com has a large list of freeware, shareware, etc.

But honestly, I just google whatever type of software I'm looking for:

For instance, if looking for a decent photo editing program, I'd google this:

download freeware photo editor

or if you have a mac, search for
download freeware photo editor macthank youMaybe check my site pcsourcepoint below, where I have links to plenty of popular software freeware sites. There is also a link to a list of those sites you can download. Perhaps subscribe to snapfiles freeware (or others) to get daily updates of new freeware software...Check HERE as well. 73 pages, all freebies.Don't take this too personal, but you do sound a bit new to the PC scene, at least as far as PC setup and software goes....
Please be careful with what you install. Many free downloads may have viruses attached, or might include malware or spyware as part of their installation.
I would look around and COME up with a couple titles you're interested in, then ask the boards opinion about specific software titles before installing. You might otherwise do youself and your new laptop a bit of harm!

I don't get sucked in by it.Here's a little tool I've just stumbled across:
Secunia Personal Software Inspector

It scans your computer for software with known vulnerabilities and if the tool finds something it provides links for updates (if available).
I've not done any extensive testing on it yet but have scanned both of the computers I use daily.
On my laptop it found the old Java version I hadn't uninstalled yet, an old version of Flash Player (and even provided me with a link for an uninstaller), and a security update for Photoshop CS2. Adobe apparently didn't think it was necessary to roll that one out via their Auto Updater.

So far I've only found one minor annoyance; an annoyance it unfortunately shares with a lot of other software. It adds itself to the Windows startup during the INSTALL without asking for permission.
But other than that I'm pretty impressed.Quote

Solve : Favorite OS?

Answer»

My first hard drive was a 32 MB in an EPSON PC-XT clone. The next PC I had was a Compaq RUNNING Windows 3.11 which had two 110 MB hard drives!
I've got dual-boot Windows XP Pro and Vista Home Premium. So far, I like the XP better. There seem to be many restrictions with Vista. The benefit of a dual-boot is that if one system crashes, I still have another one that WORKS. I think XP is going to be like the OLD 98SE. When XP first came out, a lot of people still stuck to 98SE. Now, with Vista, a lot of people will be sticking to XP for awhile. Something Like that I suppose. My first pc was a Dell DIMENSION 4100. We still use it too.

Solve : Combining Outlook Contacts from Multiple Users?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I have a situation in my office that I need some help with. We have 6 users that we want to combine all of our contacts into one master user list that all of us can use.

Does anyone know how to do that?

Thanks in advance for your help...

DavidI know this is not what you wanted to hear, but: Combining Outlook Contacts from Multiple UsersFrom Outlook help files...

About public folders
Public folders is a feature of Microsoft Exchange Server that provides an effective way to collect, organize, and share information with others in an organization. Typically, public folders are used by project teams or user groups to share information on a common area of interest. When you are connected to your Exchange server, folders labeled "Public Folders" appear in the Microsoft Outlook Folder List. You can manage these folders from Outlook. Public folders can contain any type of Outlook folder item such as messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, journal entries, notes, forms, files, and postings. You can also create a shortcut to any public folder and save the shortcut to the Outlook Bar or Favorites folder.

Things you can do with public folders include:

Post information on an electronic bulletin board

A bulletin board allows you to participate in online discussions. Each topic can be stored in its own folder with its own access permissions.
A bulletin board can be unmoderated, making it similar to an Internet newsgroup for which everyone has permission to read and post information.
A bulletin board can also be moderated by an assigned person who receives users items and decides which ones to post.
You can work with posted information in the following ways:
Once the online discussion is started, you can post a reply in the public folder for the group to read.

If you don't want the entire group to read your reply, you can reply DIRECTLY to the person who posted the information, or forward posted information to only the recipients you select.

To use a public folder as a bulletin board, the folder must be able to store e-mail messages.

Share Outlook items in a calendar, contact list, or task list

Share a calendar to keep track of meetings, events, holidays, vacation time, and project deadlines that affect the group.
Share a contact list to make NAMES, job titles, addresses, and phone numbers available to the group.
Share a task list to keep track of each MEMBER's progress on a project the group is working on.
Share files

Open a file in a public folder to read or update the file or to quickly browse through a series of files.
Start a new Microsoft Office file from the public folder and be able to use commands and tools from other programs WITHOUT leaving Outlook.
Use Windows Explorer to copy an existing file from another program to a public folder without having to open the file's program.
Post a file to a public folder without exiting the program used to create the file. For example, you might want to post a quarterly sales report you just updated in a Microsoft Excel workbook so the group can quickly view the latest information.
If you want to share files that are frequently read or updated by others, you must have the program the file was saved in set up on your computer. When you copy a file from Windows Explorer or post a file from another Office program that is open to a public folder, the original file remains where it is stored. CHANGES to the copied or posted file in the public folder don't affect the original file.

Alan <>< http://www.4team.biz/

Look at v-sync and vcard. They let you import and export contacts to Vcards.

davidg47, here's a technique you might try using to make your task easier. I haven't tried it but I can't see why it wouldn't work. From each of the computers you're working with, export Contacts to a CSV file. Then, open all those CSV files in one Excel file and sort them, remove duplicates, etc. When finished with that step, save the file to a new CSV file and then import it into Outlook.

I think I'd use one machine to test the import of the final CSV file. And, on that machine, I'd back up file Outlook data to a .pst file before doing this import.

Perhaps the vcard tool Spoiler mentioned could be used in the same way as my CSV procedure.

Solve : Outlook Business Contact Manager?

Answer»

I ran across mention of Outlook (2007) with a Business Contact Manager add-on today -- never heard of it before:

http://www.bizjama.com/2008/02/06/microsoft-outlook-expands-to-help-small-businesses/

Is anyone using this, is it worth the money? I use Outlook for my personal contacts now, and I'd love to be ABLE to use it for my business as well. THANKS!Soybean and a few others well-versed in Outlook may be along shortly to advise...but unless it's needed yesterday i'd say hold off. There may be some DECENT Free alternatives for what you WANT.
Welcome Aboard. What version of Outlook are you using now? I don't believe the Business Contact Manager is an add-on that you can buy separately and add on to a standard version of Outlook 2007. To get Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, that's EXACTLY what you buy, Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager.

Do you simply want to maintain the same type of data in Outlook for business contacts that you now have for personal contacts? If so, just add one or more folders for business contacts. To add folders, with Outlook Contacts open, click on File, New, and then on Folder.

Microsoft has a neat online "test drive" for Office 2007 components. To take the test drive, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101687261033.aspx and proceed. You must use Internet Explorer to do this. If you take the test drive for Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, you'll see that it adds a lot functionality for business contacts, such as integration with accounting software. So, again, is that what you had in mind, or just basic contact info, like your personal contacts?

Solve : Verifying disk space for IE 5.0?

Answer» BRONI - If you can or anyone help me figure this out. I am trying to reload Microsoft Picture It 2000. It stop at this point and the words on the box displaying files names etc. Comes to - VERIFYING disk space for internet explorer 5.0. Another box comes up saying your install as had a error. click that off and another box comes up saying try ed to GET internet explorer 5.0 results failed ?

I have windows XP, and plenty of room for this program. Anyone help please / THANKSI can't say for sure, but probably one of two reasons:
- non-compatible with XP
- it may be trying to install IE5 alongside, but since you have higher version of IE, it won't be able to install ver 5
Try custom install. You may be able to opt out from installing IE5.Thanks Broni, I don't think it will give me a custom install. Or are you thinking in add and remove programs. I aready try that root and got the same. Can I down grade to IE 5.0 instead of useing IE 7 ? Then if it installs, I can up grade to 7 again. Cause this program worked before with IE 7.

Also . Could this ALREADY be on the computer stash away with the older programs and I pull it out of that ? I know I am grasping at straws here.

Thanks Broni. If you uninstall IE7, it'll go back to ver 6, not to ver 5.
Saying "custom install" I mean, when you start installing Picture It, it should give you options of standard, or custom install.

Solve : Why Antivirus Software??

Answer»

If one takes, in theory, reasonable precautions to protect one's computer, is antivirus software necessary?

If one uses a browser like Firefox, from which one can control (through extensions) scripting and other elements, and uses programs like HijackThis to monitor (and prohibit new) processes running on the computer, and perhaps uses a firewall, aren't those kinds of things enough? One very simple ANSWER - you need antivirus, which monitors your computer constantly in real time.
Second thing, you have to have is firewall.Quote from: Broni on March 11, 2008, 10:47:30 PM

One very simple answer - you need antivirus, which monitors your computer constantly in real time.
Second thing, you have to have is firewall.

This is true, as spyware cannot get every thing. Just how there programed. One may be programmed to do things that others WONT look for. A side from most virus scanner running the moment the pc boots into the desktop.Another way to look at it is this. If you think you are the safest internet user in the world so decide you can do without running an antivirus but still somehow do pick up a nasty virus/trojan. You won't know about it until it is too late. In the time it takes you to figure it out (which could be a matter of minutes) the virus/trojan could be stealing your personal info and sending all of your contacts in your address book spam or worse links infected with a virus or trojan. They could then forward it on, and on, and on.... So you could be infecting thousands of people simply by thinking you're safe enough to not get infected. Pretty much like a condom no?

So do everyone a favor (me included) use an AV and Firewall. To add to the excellent comments above the malware writers have become so sophisticated that there are now tons of ways to get infected...
Years back you had to actually DLoad something and open it to get nabbed...
These days you can get infected just by visiting a dubious site, reading an Instant Message, clicking on a pop-up etc.

In the words of QMan:

That's very true, and since we live in a free country, why not to mention names?
Two of them for sure:
NORTON
McAFEEThanks for the advice. When I first put up the post, I thought people might not want to take it seriously, but I meant it for everyone -- especially novices.

Yes, as far as antivirus, Norton SystemWorks was PROBLEMATIC -- well INTENTIONED, I'm sure, but taking over your system just as critically in its own way.

I ran PCTools free firewall for a while, but then every so often, it just made the computer unbearable -- crashes, not allowing certain non-internet related software to run.

I will certainly check out your recommendations list. I am impressed that you consistently recommend these to other users, too.

Thanks, again.
BrianI ran PC Tools firewall for a couple of weeks, too, but as well, being disappointed, got rid of it.Every software is differnt, so there mite be one that has differnt setting that you like better. Never run more then one anti virus on your sytem as it will cause problems. Also, use a pop up blocker as this will help.

I heard that zone Alarm is a good firewall.Yes, I do know that you shouldn't run more than one anti-virus program. I recently advised a coworker of the same. It's a good reminder, though, and things are worth mentiioning periodically, since there are new users on the forum all the time. My first computer I had no anti-virus and I quickly got the Klez virus. Now, when installing a new O.S., the first thing I do before I even connect up to the internet, is to install a good anti-virus and then firewall. I know that there are many viruses out there just waiting to infect my computer. Yes, AVG is great and it is free. Why pay for something you can get for free? I've had it for years and can't remember the last time I got a virus since using it.
I do not like Zone Alarm where it keeps popping up messages asking if you want something to pass through. I prefer firewalls that just works silently in the background with little or no input from you.Security suites "can" and usually do slow down and crash PCs. Thats why it is normally suggested to use a mix of different products (free or paid) that are known for their low resource usage.

Mention any brand you like, the more knowledge we have from users only helps us have good recommendations for posts like these.

Solve : Copy .exe files?

Answer»

I was wondering what the best way is to copy a bunch of software programs (some free & some registered) to a disk or FLASHDRIVE so that they will load just like they do from my HD. Windows XP SP2 with Nero 8 burning software. Would like to be able to load them into another computer ... most are saved as .exe files. Should I zip them or just copy as they are?
Thanks in advance. Most probably will not run in this manner...programs need to be installed to run properly...this is by design.
What exactly is it you are trying to do ? ?Check out http://portableapps.com/ they make apps that run specifically from your keydisk with no installation. I don't know if they have a version of nero, or any CD burner on there yet, but look around.

Edit: Just searched the site and FOUND this http://portableapps.com/node/8035 which is some CD burning software. It's in beta, but try it out. Thanks patio,
I just want to know how to copy programs such as lets say CCleaner.exe or IconChanger.exe to a disc or flash drive...then be able to install them on another computer (that dosen't have internet) or even to re-install them back on my own after a fresh Windows install. Hope I am being more descriptive. I would like to have a group of programs on one disk...load the disk & be able to download them back to a HD.
Thanks. That's easy. Just GET the installation files and copy them to the keydisk the same way you would any other file, then install from the keydisk on your new machine.Thanks...was not sure if it would work that way...it's something I haven't attemped before. I'm still kind of new at this STUFF. Appreciate you help.
We're talking about two different things here.
You can copy, move, and install CCleaner somewhere else from ccsetup204.exe file.
You CAN'T simply copy, and move CCleaner.exe file, which is a part of installed already program. This is possible only with programs, which don't require installation (very rare, small applications).
To clarify further...

If you download a freeware app, utility, or any program that's not paid for the program is either a self-contained installer or a zip file that will install on any machine.
This download can be copied to any medium: portable drive, external drive, thumb drive etc. and can then be installed on any machine you want any amount of times you want simply by double clicking the original file to install it. It will still remain as an installer etc. on the thumb drive for example.

A Retail or paid for application 95% of the time will not re-act in the same way because simply they don't want it to be free to everyone. Therefore the rules and circumstances are different.
If you install Photoshop for example on your machine you cannot simply copy/move the .exe and files to any drive and expect it to work...it won't.
And this will be true for as i said about 95% of Retail applications out there.

Disclaimer: Because this is meant to be informative here everyone who wants to chime in at this point saying " i made so and so work" just resist the urge...

There are some Retail applications that will run this way but they usually will advertise this fact. As they are getting fewer and farther between i don't have an example off the top of my head.

The protection measures being taken by copyrighted manuf. of software programs continue to get more and more sophisticated...some allow only one install (simple approach) others have phone home dialers that verify serial#'s to installed hardware (more sophisticated ) and others can even remotely cripple software functions ( MS approach )

The only reason for the long winded explanation to a simple question is to understand what will and won't work and why.

Now that i've thoroughly confused things carry on.I've NEVER seen you typing so many lines....Are you OK?Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Solve : Batch file to test and change wallpaper... what am i doing wrong?!??

Answer»

Hi, we'd like to write a batch to see what wallpaper our users are currently using, and if it is our old pre-defined wallpaper, we'd like to push an update POINTER to a new file containing our new logo, if the background is set to anything other than our old pre-defined logo we'd like to leave it as is, because it is likely a background that our users have set and would like to keep. I have had no problem writing the portion that changes the wallpaper, but I cannot get the syntax to TEST what the current wallpaper is set to. Here is the code which I have gotten so far:

@ECHO off
cls
call :QUIET>nul 2>&1
::quiet

REG ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /V Wallpaper /T REG_SZ /F /D "C:\filename.bmp"
%SystemRoot%\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE user32.dll, UpdatePerUserSystemParameters

This simply sets the background to c:\filename.bmp but does not test to see what the bg currently is, any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Solve : I cannot open MS Word 2003?

Answer»

I need help!!!!!!!

I am not a super user, so please do not overwhelm me.

I am using a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP Home SP2

Office 2003. I think it is Professional because it has word, exel, access, powerpoint, outlook and everything else you can think of.

The Problem....I have numerous word documents on the laptop, however as of last night I cannot open any of the docs using Word. I noticed this when I was sent several 4 word files from a trusted source. A virus scan was performed before downloading the docs however I was not able to open the docs usign word. I was able to open several old & new docs using word pad this morning, therefore I presume that my documents are OK.

I still have the Word listed in the programs however when i click on the icon or the software in programs nothing happens....when I double click on a word doc on my desktop, nothing happens....when I right click on a doc on my desktop & choose "open with" , I can open the doc with wordpad but not word.

After reading some other forums & this forum I tried to find the Normal.dot file through the search feature....the search CAME back with no results for this search.

This is a licensed COPY of Office.

What am i doing wrong? Can SOMEONE help me........be gentle, I am a true novice, can use the software but do not know how it works............I am certainly NO expert on this stuff...but the first thing I would try is to un-install Office...then REINSTALL it.
It worked for me when I had pretty much the same problem. (Mine was 2003 as WELL)

Good Luck. Before you start uninstalling and re-installing open Word and click on Help, Detect and Repair and see if that solves the issue.

Solve : Ghosting a dual-boot system?

My final mail on this:

After trying all combinations of cloning and restoring that we thought might help, we gave up on trying to do this the smart way and made our copies the tough way.

So, what we did successfully:
1. We created one MASTER system with XP and its applications on C, Vista on D, and shared data on E
2. Using Acronis TrueImage 11 Home we made a copy of the XP-partition on a USB-disc
3. On the new systems (the clones) we restored the XP-partition; not the MBR or track 0
4. On the clones we used Partition Magic to create the partitions.
5. We installed Vista in Partition D
6. We installed the Vista applications in partition D
7. We copied the data to partition E
8. We finalized the settings and Faronics Deepfreeze
9. We used VistaBootPro to change the start-up prompts and default
10. Steps 3 thru 9 were repeated 9 TIMES (for each of the clones)

In retrospect: TrueImage turned out to be good for XP; at least we only did everything once there. My feeling is that either TrueImage has some flaws with Vista and dual-boot and/or with the combination with Faronics Deepfreeze.
I have reported the problem to Acronis.

This was a one-time action, so my interest in solutions is academic from now on.

Thank you all for your support!Quote

Installing the Vista applications meant just that: we simply installed all relevant programs by hand
The data was just a big folder with files that we copied from the external disc to the data partition.

These were normal jobs as if we had just one computer; except we did it 9 times ...

Solve : Visual Basic 4 Pro.?

Answer»

Following a bit of a meltdown I'm trying to reinstall VB4.Pro but floppy disk 10 which contains VB4-10-Cab is corrupt and no program I've TRIED has been able to recover it. The disk is in DMF format and contains approx 1.6mb.

Can anyone send me the contents by e-mail, I should be able to COPY it to my hard drive and alter the Setup .inf file to install from there.

I know this is MS copyrighted material, the version I have is genuine, purchased by me, registered to me and with a COA. A response from MS states that VB.4 is no LONGER supported and that I should upgrade to VB.Net (at vast expense).

Thanks

Solve : Pasting email addresses into an Outlook email?

Answer»

Is there a limit to how many email addresses I can PASTE at ONE time from an Excel list into the To: field of an Outlook email? I've tried pasting 1200 at one time and it appears to work mostly fine, but there are occasional QUIRKY results that makes me WONDER if I'm pasting too many at one time.I don't know the limit but OE have a limit to how many characters a text field like the TO: can hold. If you're copying 1200+ emails into a field you could be hitting that limit.
Remember OE is a personal email client and not designed as a mass mailer.

Solve : Problems witha SONY VAIO Desktop?

Answer»

First what needs to be known is what were my objectives in this post?
1.To be able to use a computer (Sony Vaio desktop) that was unuseable
2.To be able to use the existing O/S XP that was INSTALLED on the computer
3.To if unable #2 to install another version of XP Pro SP2 O/S
What has been achieved is #1.
I believed that the problem was either a software problem or a hardware problem or a combination of both.So as the bulk of the ideas suggested required an operating computer able to recognize and install software--this was not possible.I did try other suggestions like removing after mfgr. hardware--no improvement. So i said to myself--what would give me the best bang for the buck? It seemed to me if the problem were software it probably resided on my system drive (C)> Either as a corruption in my O/S or some other aspect of the computers startup process. So as we all know this software resides on the installed harddrive. So given that i have a lot of harddrives kicking about--remove the harddrive and install another. The one that was in is a Seagate 80gb.The one i replaced it with is a Samsung 80gb. The Samsung had been working in another computer i have. When i installed it i used a windows 98se upgrade cd-r i had to reformat and install an operating system. The end result of that was to be able to boot the computer into win98se. Now i am in the process of reconfiguring all the associated hardware devices that were installed to run with this new hardrive -that is a work in progress. But at least now i have a computer that works. My eventual intention once i have created an internet connection will be to download the required drivers for the hardware and once i get to that stage i shall reintroduce the Seagate back into the computer as a slave drive and see what i can do with it from that position. Failing my ability to recover the Seagate i will eventually try to install xp pro on the Samsung harddrive. But for the moment i just want to rejoice in being able to finally use the Sony Vaio.truenorthKeep in mind that Win98 does NOT have to be installed to "upgrade" to XP. There are also a lot of reasons not to try this. A clean install is always the best way to go.GX1_Man, Yes i do know that but here is my rational for doing things the way i did.
1.I did KNOW that the o/s (xp-home) on the Seagate h/d (original) was NOT working.
2.I had not been able on the Seagate to overwrite or remove the XP-home o/s and replace it with the XP-pro (corporate) that i have. Thus i cannot be certain of the functionality of the Xp-pro o/s
3.I did know that the Samsung was a working h/d.
4. The Samsung had been a SLAVE in it's previous installation. Thus there was NO o/s on it of any kind.
5.So my DECISION was to install an o/s i KNEW worked on a h/d that i KNEW worked.
6. I may be able once i get the Samsung recognizing and able to use all the hardware (particularly the 56k modem) to massage and manipulate the Seagate (to be installed as a slave-at least initially) back to life as a h/d with a version of xp running on it. As you know the way things were i could not use the computer at all. So as stated earlier this is a work in progress (but at my age the progress needs to be relatively quick) if i want to be around long enough to enjoy the fruits of all my labour. However with all you guys/gals on the forum to assist me i am confident that progresss and indeed success is quite probable. truenorth This will probably be my last post on this topic. However as there has been such a huge viewing of this post i feel duty bound to give you the final outcome of this event. This reply is also posted in the "windows forum" as it relates to an issue also involving this same computer which as is stated here is also resolved.

This is an advisory to those that have posted on this thread and as well to those that may have viewed it and are awaiting a status report.
1.While i have yet to overcome my wife's resistance to "fiddling " with her computer (the Cisnet) my natural couriosity obliged me to experiment with one of my own computers. A Sony Vaio model PCV-RXA 842.This computer and it's PROBLEMS are related in CH "computer software" ""problem with Sony Vaio Desktop" .
2.Besides the generous help from the CH forum members i could not have achieved the success i have now without the additional help of 2 web SITES http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_install.htm & http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/w2kprob.shtml .
3. I now have a 3 partition 80gb H/D (Samsung) 2 C&D as FAT32 and a G as NTFS .
4.C contains the original O/S Win98se (upgrade) that finally got the computer running again and G contains the XP-pro (corporate edition).
5. I was initially getting a freeze at the "Windows Setup" again as i did in the other post i mentioned . This was the same problem that was occuring with the original Seagate H/D. This time i used a suggestion in the 'www.le.uk" site to press "F5" when the option to press "F6" comes up during the boot phase. This overcame the freeze and allowed me to complete the O/S (XP-pro) install to a successful result.
6.While i have NOT yet attemted an install to a removable H/D given this experience i do not envisage a problem as as long as the removeable is plugged in and recognized one should be able to direct the O/S install there.
7. In this instance i had to format and create a file sysyem on the 44gb of the Samsung H/D that was recognized but not formated (G). Once both were done it was there that i installed the XP-pro.
8. The only item remaining to declare "mission accompished" is to regain the use of the 80gb Seagate H/D originally installed in the Vaio. Thanks again to all of you that endeavored to assist me in these related issues. truenorth
Thanks for the follow up I'm sure any other members who may have a similar issue will appreciate it.This post is by way of a little bit of house cleaning. As a result of solving another problem (with regards to a difficulty using internal hdd's in external cases) i have a further (hopefully final) comment on this almost one year ago issue. I believe it may have been my very 1st on CH forums. The HD (a Seagate 80GB internal) which was one of 3 i was endeavoring to use in an external case and that i had never been able to get to work in the Sony Vaio (as per this post) is now totally functional in an external USB case. The material contained on the Seagate (now that i can access it) shows 2 partions. The larger of 58+ GB has absolutely nothing on it. The smaller 10+ GB has a very small amount of program data and a tiny bit of personal data (not mine). The most significant absence is that of an operating system. There is none ,which i believe goes a long way to solving why that computer initially did not function. I am so elated by this situation that i am going to install Linux ubuntu 7.10 on the now available Seagate hd and really get myself in over my head. This will be easily achievable as i have absolutely no experience with Linux and most certainly i am not a programmer. Thanks again to all that had tried to help me on this lengthy issue. :)truenorth

Solve : Outlook Express error?

Answer»

Case resolved!

I removed all profiles and recreated them. However, this time, I did not rename them. That worked, though it does not make sense! I have no clue why because it asks me to 'Type the name by which you would LIKE to REFER to these servers..." but when I gave the accounts names I chose, 'GMAIL' and 'Gmail-Business', it did not like it! I am totally puzzled. However, I did rename my Hotmail account years ago when I set it up in OE, and I have NEVER had any errors! This happens only with Gmail, but I would be hard-pressed to find a way to contact them. Apparently, they WANT people to use their mail services but are not interested in supporting them.

Now things are back to normal.

Thanks to all who responded.

Solve : memory sticks?

That thumb drives are wrongly named by poeple who call them memory sticks. But they have memory in them, and they look like sticks.
Call them what you like...but memory sticks is not INCORRECT.It's really not incorrect -- it's all in how you want to think about memory, I guess, and memory can be permanent (like on hard drives, and USB DEVICES, etc) or it can be TEMPORARY (like in RAM, or my brain).

Solve : Trouble with Word XP in Vista?

Answer»

I have just set up a new system, I have an HP Pavillion, Intel Core 2 duo CPU E4500 @ 2.2 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, running WINDOWS Vista, 32 bit OS. I installed my old copy of Office XP Small Business on it, and my wife has been running into trouble with WORD.

It types fine for a while, then, the typing doesn't register as it is supposed to. For example, the apostrophe (')starts to register as that little accent thingy (`) in the to left hand CORNER of the KEYBOARD. The accent thingy registers as the number sign (#). There are probably more problems, but at that point we give up on it. I tried shutting down the program and RESTARTING, and then it returns to normal. As far as I know, I have run all the upgrades and service packs to the program. Can anyone tell me what's going on and what I can do about it? As far as I know, it only happens in Word, but tomorrow I will test other programs to see if anything else is affected.

Thanks

BruceDid you remember to grab all the Office updates ? ?
You could DLoad and install Open Office (Free) to see if you still get keyboard errors...this would eliminate Office as the culprit and point to hardware issues.
Is this a USB keyboard ? ?
If so you could also try a PS2 keyboard.

Welcome Aboard to both you and your Wife...

Solve : software compatability?

Answer»

I have a gateway pc that CAME with microsoft XP pro software. I just got an older Dell laptop and would like to reformat the drive and install my xp software that I got from Gateway on it. Can I do this? The disks have Gateway PRINTED on them. The operating system disk also says "To be used with a new Gateway PC". Any help would be appreciated.Probably not...
OEM XP CD's are normally tied to the machine they shipped with and will not install properly on another machine...even if both machines are the same brand sometimes.
You may want to CONSIDER another OS for the laptop depending on the COMPONENTS such as Win2K or even a flavor of Linux such as Ubuntu.

Solve : Software on ISO File - Help!?

Answer»

What is the file file size of the .ISO? If it's over 700 MB I suspect it is an .ISO from a DVD. Many of the apps suggested thus far will probably not work on a DVD .ISO. Both of mine will.Quote

It's a copy of some foreign LANGUAGE SOFTWARE.

According to my friend, the files are torrent files, but neither of us can figure out what do with them. I keep coming ACROSS the BitTorrent program in my internet searches, but I'm not QUITE sure if it's what I'm looking for -- do I need to download that program to get my software to work? The software is a program for learning French, if that's any help.

I don't know much about the cd or the software -- it's something that's been making the rounds through my classmates,

Why is this still being persued ? ?

Solve : cell phone's pc suite disc compatability problem?

I cant believe it. I just got a new cell phone and I want to INSTALL the phone's pc suite disc but it says it's only compatible for windows 2000 and windows xp, and I only have windows vista. how do I install this?Check their website for Vista software...if they don't offer it return the phone for one that does.
That usually gets the manuf. attention.I got a Samsung SGH a516. I sent them an email about this problem ok. Did you look for a newer version of the software on the Samsung website? It will probably be a lot faster to find a new version yourself than to wait for a reply from Samsung.
If it is a new phone there most LIKELY is a Vista compatible software suite available.
ok I got that over with. my main priority with this pc suite is to transfer music to the phone. I tried doing that but it just CANCELS during the process and says "insufficient memory." *censored* is this. Solve : Downloads are out of sync?

Answer»

Hi all, i hope someone can help, the other week i was downloading my favourite TV show and had no problems up until about a week ago, i always use eztv for my downloads and never had any problems, i also use utorrent to search for downloads, i decided to get a separate IDE hardrive for my downloads taking the strain off my HDD, i also installed AVG7 virus programe, and the first thing i noticed happening is when i started to download a new show onto my new hardrive it also appeared on my other hardrive, when this happened utorrent pop up said the download had stopped because another person or programe is using it, i DELETE it off my original hardrive and it reapears again and again, so i disconnected the new HDD and although i can download a full show without a problem onto my original HDD i now have the problem that when i download it to a CD or dvd the sound is a GOOD 10-20 seconds out of sync, i also use nero7 now since my last succesfull recording.

It seems to me that the only thing that is different now from a few weeks ago is that ive got nero7 and avg7 so it must be one of these causing the problems.

Any help would be greatQuote

the sound is a good 10-20 seconds out of sync

Solve : Media Player Classic crashes my computer :[?

Answer»

Some avis that you download are badly done and can cause crashes. If it is (say) one in 20 then just be more careful where you get them from, is my opinion.
But the thing is, a lot of these I've had for a long time, back when MPC worked just fine. Not only that, but the same video file could work fine once, and then crash the next time. Also, it's just kind of odd that I've never had this PROBLEM with VLC (I still don't want to use it, THOUGH) with the same video files.Create a copy of one of the AVI files that crashes MPC.

Download DivFIX & execute main program.

Click 'Add files' then navigate to the copied AVI & select it, then select 'check errors'.

* I've never tried this program (never had to) which is why I suggested copying the AVI first.

See if it FINDS any errors with the file.

I would also scan your computer for malware - what security do you have?Well I went ahead and error CHECKED all the files I've had problems with, which was about 15 of them, and they all checked out fine.

I've RECENTLY done a check with AVG Anti-spyware, and I'm also quite careful with what I do on the internet so I don't get those kinds of problems often.

Is there ANY possibility it's in the settings file that MPC creates? It's the only other file accompanying it in it's folder. I'll try it out with the default settings and see if anything is different and report back. You might be onto something there... let us know how you get on

Now why does my "Picture Publisher" give me this message and locks up when I do a "Open with" on a "JPEG" and select Picture Publisher:" I get this message

Solve : Windows Validation Problem?

I am currently using windows xp pro for quite some time now, i purchased a licenced version of windows xp pro of ebay last March 2007 fo 80 euro (im living in Ireland). Got it, installed it and everything is working fine. But last night my sister was listening to some music on my pc, when she was finished she TURNED of the pc but she did not click 'start' and 'turn off computer', instead she hit the switch on the wall where the pc is PLUGGED in! . So i started up the pc today and its TELLING me that my version of windows is genuine

So i went on to the page Microsoft told me to go on https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx?displaylang=en&cCode=IRL&Error=13&PartnerID=131&sGuid=9300ab37-16af-4c11-a90a-bac1014598dc and re-entered my product key but it wont take it, its saying that the product key is the wrong one What can i do to fix it? Do i have to buy another licenced product key?

My specs are:
Windows XP Pro SP2
Pentium 4 1.4ghz

Solve : Add\Remove Program List?

Answer»

Morning,

New one for ya!! Does anyone know how to remove a program title from the add\remove program LIST in which the program has already been removed?

Thanks!Give CCleaner a try; get the Slim version here. When you run CCleaner, go to the Tools part of it, and select the Uninstall button at the upper left PORTION of the screen. Then, select the item you want to DELETE and click the "Delete Entry" button on the right side of the panel.Awsome!! Thanks, I also found this little reg hack Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe
Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Uninstall

and delete the one you don't want to see!!

Thanks!!!

Solve : Display resolution keeps resetting?

Answer»

When ever I shut down, restart, put to sleep, hibernate, do anything to my computer that involves turning it off, even for a short period of time, the screen resolution keeps resetting itself to the lowest setting. I really don't want this and it gets a bit annoying to have to keep changing it back to the way I like it. Can anyone help?

Stats:
Original resolution: 1440 X 900 pix
Keeps resetting to: 800 X 600 pix

Windows Vista
Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS
17" laptop
Intel Centrino Duo 1.67GhzDo you have the latest drivers for the Nvidia card?
If so uninstall the video card and the monitor from Device MANAGER, restart your PC and reinstall them.

Test and report back.I uninstalled my video card, and monitor uninstalled with it, restarted computer, and now I can't seem to reinstall it. It keeps running a scan for new hardware, finds the video card, trys to install it again but keeps getting an error. I tried downloading driver software from nvidia but its not working, windows update wont install the driver, so I'm still trying to GET it to work but no luck so far with even reinstalling it.

Another quick question: i have a recovery drive on my computer that i set when I first got this computer. If i use it, will my programs/files be deleted? I was just thinking i might be able to set it back to the previous proper settings when this never happened, but afraid I will lose the programs I installed on this computer and my files that I have on this computer. That partition will destroy everything on your hard drive and return it to the exact state it was in when you bought it.

Ok, MAKE sure that no drivers are currently installed for that video card. Restart your computer. When the Add Hardware wizard comes up hit CANCEL. DO NOT let it try to install.
Now run the Nvidia driver setup files and let it run to completion. Once it is finished reboot and it should now have your video card correctly detected and installed.I tried your steps but it didn't seem to work so I contacted HP, my computer's brand and they told me the same thing but I told them it didn't work, so they led me through a recovery process thing where it only recovered my graphics card driver, and I didn't have to recover anything else.

So now my main problem is fixed: screen resolution will stay now when i restart it
But another problem arose: I don't think my Windows Desktop Manager (process dwm.exe) isn't running properly. It's either that or something that has to do with nvidia so I'll give them a check. On like my browser, and not just my browser but for example, the top bar (with the close, minimize buttons) aren't see through like they used to be and from what I remember, every time i ended the task "dwm.exe" it WOULD do the same thing thats happening right now. Any suggestions? You may have to go in to your dwm settings and reconfigure the transparency. All of the file restoring and stuff might have reset them to the default.Could you please tell me how? I'm really stumped on this one

I have a feeling I know what it is...before I did all this stuff I could choose whether I wanted to use the monitor or the nvidia monitor and now I cannot choose that. And before when I clicked "personalize" on the right click menu for the desktop, i had the option of using a nvidia control panel but I don't have either of those options now. I was thinking of just saving what I need on a external hard drive and just recovering my whole pc to the way I got it.Sounds like you no longer have the nVidia drivers installed, you are now using the manufacturers driver for your video card. You'll have to reinstall the nVidia drivers, make sure you are using Vista compatible drivers....I have tried so many drivers, i made sure they were vista compatible, i made sure they supported my graphics card, that they were made for my graphics card, i even contacted my MANUFACTURER and they gave me the exact driver i needed and it didnt work. So I'm just gonna recover my whole computer to when i bought it.

Solve : Unreliable outlook sending?

Answer»

Hi all

Running xp pro with outlook2000. I find that I can receive emails no PROBLEM. When connected to my ROUTER (hard wired) I can send no problem. When I go to my office, and connect via wireless I find that only about 1 in 6 or 1 in 10 of the emails I send arrive. I receive ok.

I have tried to see if there is a pattern but I can't really detect one.

Would value any pointers/suggestions

Thanks

EAny traffic blocking going on at the Office ? ?
This could be a FIREWALL or other web management software...I know this is porbably a "Thick" question, but where should I look - would it be in the wireless router that the office has installed?

Thanks for reply - appreciate it

Edwardsorted - just had to CHANGE the SMTP isp.

Solve : outlook 2000 emails inserted in tasks don't open?

Answer»

I am using Windows XP Professional and Office 2000 SR-1 with service pack 3.

Emails that I have attached to tasks do not open; notes do. This is true both of old tasks and old emails, and also with new ones.

My other machine uses XP Home and the same Office 2000, and this problem doesn't occur, even when using the identical outlook.pst

I have UNINSTALLED and reinstalled. I have used windows cleanup utility to clear the registry and related files, and then reloaded the original outlook.pst on a freshly installed version, but no change.

Has anyone run across this problem before?Quote from: davidgreenson on March 02, 2008, 07:15:09 PM

Exactly what steps do you follow to attach an email to a task? With Office 2003, I SEE that I can drag an email into Tasks. This appears to add that email as a separate/new task. Is that your procedure? Sometimes I use that dragging procedure. More typically, from within a previously defined task, I click on Insert > Item and the select the Email that I want to attach. It now appears, along with an envelope icon, in the notes section of the task.OK, I see how that works. "Insert > Item and the select the Email" works for me; I can open the email from within the Task. I don't have a solution now; I'll do a bit of searching and see whether I can find something.

By the way, what happens when you TRY to open an email from a Task? Do you get an error message?Nothing happens. No error message. No indication that any command has been performed.

I suspect that there is some problem with xp pro and outlook, since I don't have this problem on the machine with xp home. I have solved the problem, thought others MIGHT profit by knowing how. Turns out it was a conflict between Outlook and Google Desktop. By removing the latter, the problem disappeared. According to this article, it is only an old version of google desktop that this applies to. See http://thebackroomtech.wordpress.com/2008/01/25/problems-opening-outlook-attachments-with-google-desktop-search-installed/
Since I didn't really use google desktop much, I just removed it, and so haven't tested out the possibility that the newer version works with Outlook. Thanks for sharing that info, and glad to hear problem resolved.

It's about formats. Super will convert VOB to WMV.You know I've TRIED to DOWNLOAD that SUPER so many times but it just won't have it. Why they made that so *censored* hard to download is beyond me 'activate JAVA, refresh cache blah blah blah' why don't they just have a NORMAL download that a simpleton can use? /rant

I personally use the imaginatively titled 'VOB2MPG' which is free.

Solve : webcam won't broadcast?

Answer»

When I try to broadcast my cam I get" a script in the movie is causing Flash Player to run slowly" it gives me an option to abort the script or not to avoid freezing up possibly. No matter WHETHER I choose yes or no it FREEZES up and I have to unplug the machine. I have seen a refrence to this but it talked about loops and locating specific code. This is just way above my expertise. The webcam is a new"logitech quickcam". I deleted both flashplayer and quickcam SOFTWARE and reloaded to no avail. My OLD piece of crud machine would broadcast it but not my new"improved" one.Hah! Sure wish somebody had a solution to try. I'm not the fastest racehorse AROUND so be gentle in tech talk. But anyone that maybe could help-sure be appreciated. Thanks much.
