Answer» comp I'm working on does a soft shut down on its own. HP notebook with vista. I was thinking HEAT could not cause this sort of shut down. Solve : Excel help - linking web pages? |
Answer» Hi, does anyone know if there is any way of displaying a hyperlink in a cell without UNDERLINING the whole text? I don't know why you posted the link. Anyway, in Excel, select a cell that has a hyperlink in it. Then, go to Format, Cells, and, in the box for Underline, select None, and then click OK. Of course, you can select multiple cells and then apply the formatting, or use Format Painter to copy the format from one cell to others. Sorry, I don't think you have quite understood my query (maybe I haven't phrased it very well?). The idea is that I wanted only part of the text in the cell to be used as a hyperlink, like in the example above (I don't quite get your first point, as I had to post some kind of link otherwise my question wouldn't make much sense). So that when you MOVE the cursor over the cell, only the bit that is underlined/highlighted appears in the hyperlink caption (like with the link in the above example appearing in the status bar), with the rest of the text normal. It just looks a bit neater and means that when you edit it you don't have to keep clicking into the formula bar to avoid opening ANOTHER window unnecessarily. Not that drastically important, I just wondered if it could be done. Hope this clears things up. Even if it can't be done, please let me know if you can!Your additional explanation clarified what you want to accomplish. But, I'm afraid it cannot be done. However, here's a tip that might be helpful when editing cells with hyperlinks. To select a cell that has a hyperlink in it without jumping to the hyperlink destination, click the cell and hold the mouse button until the cursor becomes a cross, then release the mouse button. You can then hit F2 to put the cell in edit mode. Yeah I thought it couldn't be done, I tried pasting a similar example from Word and it just came out as one long hyperlink. Thanks anyway, that's a useful tip! |

Solve : Is there a text editor out there that can be restricted to 78 characters?? |
Answer» Hello all. It's doesn't have to be fancy, Notepad is working right now, but when the users exit the document I truncate the lines to 78 characters to store them in the application. Can you share a bit more info on what you're doing. The truncating is a problem, right? What application are you referring to? Is this text file data imported into this application? Do you have Microsoft Office installed on all computers involved here? It would not be guaranteed to have Office installed on all computers nor would I want to insist on that. Truncating the input from a user is a problem, the data is loaded back into an application (character based custom application). I might be able to use Bill Guthries STRIPPER program to automatically wrap the text at the 78th character, but the results will be confusing to the user so I was looking for a text TOOL to automatically wrap the users input while they were editing. And no I am not familiar with VB, although there is a VB programmer on staff who I might be able to ask (Thanks for the tip). KenQuote from: KenL on January 29, 2008, 03:57:32 PM And no I am not familiar with VB, although there is a VB programmer on staff who I might be able to ask (Thanks for the tip). No problem. Solve : How do I change folder permissions for all Outlook folders?? |
Answer» I work for a company where some of the Outlook users have over 100 personal folders in their Outlook folder VIEW. When I want to change the folder permissions on each of those folders, I have to do each folder individually. CLAWS, you use Outlook on a Exchange server, right? Otherwise, I believe you wouldn't be asking this question. Perhaps you assumed the forum viewers would recognize that fact, but stating rather than implying it would probably have been best. I dont understand your response, the tone of your post comes across as a sort of reprimand. Have I done something wrong? In any case, the firm I work for does use an exchange server for outlook, but I dont know how making changes on exchange server will solve the dilemma I have posted. I am not sure if you have misunderstood my initial post but Ill try and make it simpler - I work for a law firm. One of our lawyers has 100+ personal folders in their outlook inbox. The lawyer in question has their secretary setup as a delegate to give her access to Inbox, Calendar etc. However the lawyer is having to setup individual permissions for certain folders (out of the personal 100+). The lawyer happens to be a major director in the firm who does not have time to sit there and create the permissions individually for the 50 folders that the secretary needs access to. Therefore the job falls to our IT Service Desk to setup the permissions out of hours. This is not fair on the IT Service Desk but at the same time we cant tell the director/lawyer to do it himself. Therefore just to reiterate, I would like to know if there is a simpler way to setup the permissions as opposed to going through the following process for each of the 50 folders that the secretary needs access to - Right Click > Properties > Permissions etc If there is a way to do this via the exchange server I am all ears, as it would most certainly relieve the pressure from our IT Service Desk. I was searching on the internet not long ago and came across an article that said that a certain version of outlook produces a dialog box listing all default and personal folders. You can set the type of permission you want and then place a tick next to each of the folders. Is this true? Apologies if the above was a bit vague, but try as I might I am unable to find that same article on the net, otherwise I would have linked to it for you guys.Quote from: CLAWS on January 28, 2008, 02:17:50 AM Quote from: soybean on January 26, 2008, 02:43:11 PMI merely intended to point out that the Exchange ENVIRONMENT is a key factor here. Outlook users, such as me, who use Outlook but not in an Exchange server environment simply never ENCOUNTER such issues as the setting of permissions you're talking about because that's we don't share any Outlook folders. Outlook folders can't be shared with others when Outlook is used on a single computer that is not on an Exchange server.CLAWS, you use Outlook on a Exchange server, right? Otherwise, I believe you wouldn't be asking this question. Perhaps you assumed the forum viewers would recognize that fact, but stating rather than implying it would probably have been best. So, anyway, sorry but I don't know whether there's a way to speed up the process for you. Perhpas someone else will have some thoughts on this. Hi Soybean, Apologies if my response to your post came across as aggressive, my bad for misunderstanding. I think I might have found something though - http://www.mrhtech.com/Software/EPM/ Yes, looks like you may have found a good solution. Hope it works well for you. Thanks for sharing that info. |

Solve : Adobe Acrobat 8 not installing!? |
Answer» I am running Windows XP Home SP2. Find any PDF file, right click on it, click on "Open with". Select Acrobat from programs list, put a checkmark in "Always open...". Click OK. I've tried that aswell, it didn't work. Something is really messed up on this computer...A Google search on Installer Error 2755 yields many findings, such as http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q107137 I SUGGEST trying this before you try searching for a solution. Uninstall Adobe Reader. Download, INSTALL, and run CCleaner (see next paragraph). Then, install Adobe Reader again and see whether it works. Get the Slim version of CCleaner. Run the Windows scan and remove everything it finds. Then, run the Registy scan. When asked to backup your Registry before proceeding, do so. Then, complete the scan and tell CCleaner to fix all problems found. Repeat the Registry scan, since it may find additional items in a REPEATED scan. |

Solve : Outlook Crashes Computer? |
Answer» I've got Outlook 2002 running on XP Pro and I first got an Outlook error message that my personal folders did not close properly. I hit the button to repair the problem... It ran for a while and then crashed. Now I get a blue screen with the "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" line at the top every time I try to open Outlook. Is there a way to HOOK up to a remote "Detect and Repair" CHECK-up for this version of Outlook?i would remove the personal folder from outlook in the profile. then run a pst cleaner. outlook gets funny with pst files after they reach over 1 gig in size. you can use scan pst to try and recover the pst file, and then add it BACK to the profile. Most commonly it is the CPU overheating. A close second would be bad RAM.And bringing up the REAR at # 3 is no SP2 installed... |

Solve : Lost a partition? |
Answer» I have an old laptop, IBM pentium II, built for 98, 128 MB ram, with two partitions. The one win 98 is on is 2 GB in size, and the other was about 11 GB. I tried to install win XP onto the larger partition, and it worked, but when i start it, it gets stuck on the initial screen, and will not do anything. When i start in safe mode, it gets stuck on agp440.sys but my bios still tells me that I have XP installed.... How does it do that? A Win98 machine with 128MG of RAM is going to struggle with XP...especially a laptop. This may be an exercise in futility.Quote from: contrex on November 03, 2007, 01:47:45 AM Quote from: atlasrune on November 03, 2007, 01:06:29 AMI dunno, but it still has the startum menu asking whether i want to RUN Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows.but my bios still tells me that I have XP installed.... I checked Microsoft's archives, and they say that XP *can* run on 64 megs of ram. I think its probably something to do with the graphics capabilities of the laptop.Quote from: atlasrune on November 03, 2007, 10:13:43 AM but my bios still tells me that I have XP installed.... How does it do that? Quote I dunno, but it still has the startum menu asking whether i want to run Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows. That's not your "bios", that's the NT boot loader still hanging around.. You may find you need to boot into Windows 98 DOS mode and type fdisk /mbr at the prompt to deal with this. As for when XP was hanging at agp440.sys, that may be a sign your hard disk is dying, or at least needs checking |

Solve : I've lost the SOUND from some of my video files!!!? |
Answer» In the last several weeks I've been having two problems with a few of my video clips: (1) Some of my video clips have lost their AUDIO. (2) Some of my other video clips no longer play. With these I can only drag the progress bar to see individual frames. I also get a pop up from the player that says, "The enumerator has become invalid." I've had all of these videos for at least a year, and have all played fine, until now. I use Windows Media Player 10 for all my video clips. My computer runs XP. Any HELP would be extremely appreciated. I had anomolies similair to yours before that I still can't explain. I believe these anomolies show themselves when I made significant changes to my system like; adding a new anti-virus or malware program or big changes througout your O/S. Has that ocurred? Example; my daughter recieved an mp3 player that requires wmp v10 in operation while I already had wmp v11 installed. I had to ROLL back the version. It worked according to the instructions (help I got from the good people in this forum), a few or more video's (older ones) decided to stop playing also. I've never had it explained to me why. I can't even re e-mail them back to me as I get widows notes of an inability. If it is important, try going to a restore POINT more then two weeks ago. MICROSOFT itself has a forum with some of there tech pros that specifically answer media player questions. I don't have the link with me now but the site isn't difficult to find. Solve : First Virus? |
Answer» I've been connected to the internet since i moved in to my new place,(about 9 months) and i've never had an actual Virus detected. Lastnight I downloaded the new CRYSIS Demo game and then decided to scan for viruses using PCcillin Internet Security. And what do you know, it found one. All my spysweeper and anti-virus has ever found was tracking cookies, until today. I wouldn't take any risk. It is nice to know what you are dealing with. What if it was a false positive of a system file needed by windows? Just delete it? Crash your computer? Not me...... Quote iun6002.exe (desktop surveillance personal spyware) - Details I don't think I would download from whatever site you got the Demo from. Empty the quarantine and you should be OK.I did some search about iun6002.exe Indigo Rose reports it as a part of their UNINSTALL program, but number of other sites: http://www.auditmypc.com/process/iun6002.asp http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=121402 Quote It appears that Symantec has it STILL listed as spywarereport it as a dangerous file, so I wouldn't take a risk. Quote What if it was a false positive of a system file needed by windows? But it's not. That's why it's safe to get rid of it. Im not saying it has anything to do with this, but my eventlog viewer isn't running. I didn't disable it or anything, but it is telling me that the service is unavailable. Thats weird, it always worked just fine before today. I dont like to mess with things that I dont completely understand and dont know what they affect. So i'm pretty sure I didnt do anything to stop the service.Go Start>Run, type in: services.msc Hit Enter. Check what is the status of your "Event Log" service.I'll do that Broni, but first, I was looking around in my PCcillin logs and found the actual name of the virus. It was TROJ_DLOADER.WAH. The .exe file we talked about was the infected file. I'm not sure if this is of any use. Did exactly what you said to do and its not showing any Event Log in the list, NEITHER extended or standard.I checked Trenmicro for TROJ_DLOADER.WAH: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_DLOADER.WAH but as you can see here: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ%5FDLOADER%2EWAH&VSect=T it hides under the name of irsetup.exe You posted before, that infected file was named iun6002.exe, so maybe irsetup.exe comes up when you're silly enough to execute iun6002.exe Just my guesses. |

Solve : most important software? |
Answer» hi everyone i'm in 11th grade n my teacher is making me write a research paper, and I could not think of anything so I was like ok "most important software"; and now I must argue why. so far my thesis states that the most important software is the operating system because it is always expanding to the users needs, it allows the user to configurate the PC how he wants it and because without it you can not really do much with the computer. ... I have a feeling it's gonna be tough getting 6-8 pages on this topic ... Go back further than that. Then it will be easy to illustrate "expansion". Look up good ol' Bill Gates, and where he started with DOS. Actually, I believe he bought it from somebody else, then he and a partner began developing/altering it from there. You know DOS is an acronym for Disk Operating System, right? MS-DOS was developed as a stand alone system up through version 6.22. If you can find a history if the changes/features/implementations of it from whereever Gates started, that alone will take up several pages of your paper! I haven't gone and looked, and I don't trust my memory... but I don't think he ever marketed a MS-DOS v.1.0. I remember something about a v. 3 though. Then there was 4.1... maybe that was the one that sucked. v5.0 was very popular. 6.0 was great! The "old Windows" you referred to - possibly Win3.1 - ran on top of DOS. If nothing else, you can stipulate that since money makes the world go 'round, and Billy is one of, if not the richest man, and he did it with an operating system - then the os is the most important software! Quote Actually, I believe he bought it from somebody elseThat's right... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS Quote MS-DOS began as QDOS (for Quick and Dirty Operating System), written by Tim Paterson for computer manufacturer Seattle Computer Products (SCP) in 1980. It was marketed by SCP as 86-DOS because it was designed to run on the Intel 8086 processor. 86-DOS function calls were BASED on the dominant CP/M-80 operating system, written by Digital Research, but it used a different file system. Paterson allegedly wrote it because he liked CP/M, but a version of CP/M didn't yet exist for the 8086. In a sequence of events that would later inspire much folklore, MICROSOFT negotiated a license for 86-DOS from SCP in December 1980 for $25,000, then re-licensed 86-DOS to IBM. Microsoft then acquired all rights to 86-DOS for only $50,000 from SCP in July, 1981, shortly before the PC's release.BTW... Quote based on the dominant CP/M-80 operating systemRemember Commodore???wow guys thanks so much for this information, you gave me so many ideas for this paper. I didn't know about a lot of those things you guys told me but i'm going to do research and write a good paper if anythin else pops up to your heads let me know i'll be checking but i'm pretty set on what i'm gonna write to start the essay thanks again everyone you rock !Don't forget to REPORT back with A GRADE from that paper Quote from: Broni on October 20, 2007, 11:11:44 AM BTW... Some FRIENDS had one. With the big ol' external floppy drive, right? ...wait, maybe that was RadShack.... Quote Don't forget to report back with A GRADE from that paper Excellent idea! Nugi: Good luck with it. Tip: Before you use wikipedia, ask your teacher about it. By the very nature of it, it is not solid reference material. Not for a classroom paper anyway. It is fine for quick reference in a forum like this. Just ask your teacher before you quote it or use it. Quote With the big ol' external floppy drive, right?Yeah, that one. Commodore 128 was my first computer: ...using small TV as a monitor...with HUGE 128 KB of RAM (LOOOL) I remember spending night hours, and hours to copy some game code from computer magazine. Then, you try to start it...DANG!!, it won't work. You know, while copying, one wrong keyboard move, and your whole game is screwed.Quote from: Broni on October 21, 2007, 01:01:35 PM ...one wrong keyboard move, ... I'm reminded of key punch machines and teletypes. "THE" computer was at some other university a few hours away. Geez... I even dropped my stack of cards once! What a mess.... [ bs mode on ] And keypunch machines were new fangled stuff! Before them, our computers looked like: [ bs mode off] |

Solve : software will not open? |
Answer» I cannot open my futura software.I last opened it about a month ago and opened just fine. The futura software also has an add on software(AUTO punch)which enchances the futura software by auto-digitizing images.I uninstalled the futura software and then reinstalled it I then opened it and it opened just fine. Then I installed the auto punch software(which installs right into the futura software) I then tried to open the futura software and it doesn't open. What could be going wrong? and how can I fix the problem?Lydia, are you getting any errors or messages when you're trying to open it or is it just not opening. In addition have you CHECKED their website to see if there are any available updates for the program? Finally, what version of Windows are you running?I've got another question... -do you need the add-on to run the software -if not then why WONT you DISABLE it being that it seems to be the problem -have you thought of updating your futura software? (might be an annoying patch to fix this problem.) Hope it works.....=D May we ask for a link to that software maker (+ full NAME of that program)? |

Solve : USB not recognize!!? |
Answer» I m USING winxp (sp2) i got a usb hard drive (external notebook harddisk with 120GB) i have plug it to my PC usb port, but it sometime will show that usb not recognize and sometime it run very well... is that the driver problem / the hardware problem?? anyone can tell me??Try to see if this problem occurs only when you use one particular USB port. Your computer should have at least two. Try using all the PORTS. Also, before you physically disconnect the USB drive, MAKE sure you double-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the System Tray and choose Stop. |
