Solve : Please help with Geforce 9800 gt 1GB?

Answer»

Hi.

I have some problems with my GeForce 9800 gt 1GB.It seems that it causes my pc to crash totally.
It mostly happens when I am playing games,at about +- 2MIN of game play the display would make
lines of all colours and the sound go into a loop. After a few secs the pc would then restart. If I manually
restart the pc by holding in the power swich, the SCREEN displays random characters and APPEARS to be
pixelated.I then then need to wait a few minutes before booting the pc in order for it to work.I have checked
my gpu tmp and it seldom goes over 60C.I have tried different ram sticks,an gigabyte cpu cooler, adding card fans
to the system and even going back to windows xp.But nothing works.I now replaced the graphic card with
geforce 9300 and it works flawlessly.I have a 550 watt psu.I have read somewhere that the 9800
have a tendency to cause motherboards to overheat.I have Asus P5N-D mother board.
Any HELP would be APPRECIATED.

Philip
Ps sorry for my bad English...

Solve : Old Presario 1998 Issues?

Answer»

Trying to resurrect my outdated Presario. I don't know if the CD drive is bad, but the Hard Drive went bad and I got a new (used) one, however the drive wont be detected on my operational computer when connected. Is this drive probably bad too? I can't get to the BIOS on the old Presario because I hear you need a boot partition for a COMPAQ, which that Hard drive is gone and it doesn't look like I can get anything on this one. Should I admit defeat, or do you have any Ideas?well, without the setup partition, you cannot get into the BIOS setup. (this is simply awful DESIGN! I mean, my 286 could get into it's CMOS setup without a disk...)

anyway, you didn't provide an exact model number- a google TELLS me that it's probably a 5140.

There are references to a "setup disk", a FLOPPY disk that could be used to access the CMOS screens.

Compaq thankfully has a GOOD page of files relating to that model:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=20&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=93092&lang=en

try the two items listed at the bottom, titled "system management".

The floppy drive is also not installed. Do you think it would be worth while to pick one of those up as well? You can get to the BIOS on those old Compaq's, I had a few and they are a PIA.  When you see the red flashing block in the upper right hand corner of the screen, tap the F10 key.  I think you see if just prior to the red Compaq splash screen.

Solve : How to password protect batch print?

Answer»

We have a Canon imageRUNNER C5068 in our office. We are around 20 people working and our computers are connected to this printer. Sometimes we all needed to take bulk (200 or more Sheets) printouts from TEKLA STRUCTURE Software. How we can PASSWORD protect these batch PRINT and take prints (now we announce to everybody in the office THT “I am going to print  for an hour PLS don’t disturb”. This is very annoying to all. Pls help.

I don't think you can do it without the proper software.... CORRECT me if I'm wrong.
Ashampoo Magical Security is a good security program. It can password protect any kind of file/program.

It only costs $20, so I think it's worth it.

Solve : System Drive issues - Invalid drive specification?

Answer»

My mission:
Boot a P100 machine using a HDD I have which has a previous INSTALLATION of Win95.

An obstacle arises:
The HDD is auto-detected and identified by the BIOS, but then the system hangs and I get the following message:

Disk I/O error
Replace the disk, press any key to continue.

The HDD in question works fine as a secondary drive (All the disk contents are there). The P100 machine BOOTS with no problem using a HDD I have with Win98 installed.

Things I’ve tried:
Checked the HDD with AVG ver.8, - no problems detected.
Booted the P100 with Win95b floppy – DOS cannot see c: drive (I get the message ‘Invalid drive specification’). However, if I run FDISK /status, c: drive and its partition is found!
I tried FDISK /mbr, – the problem still occurs.
Norton Utilities Disk Doctor can only see a: drive.

Is it time to abort this mission?
Thanks,
Harry
try leaving the jumper outAnd a brand new IDE CABLE...1.  P100 Machine.  I've heard of the P-51 Mustang, but I'm not familiar with the P100.  Who is the manufacturer?

2.  Windows 95.  Which version of Windows 95 is on the hard drive?

3.  Hard Drive.  What is the:
    o  Make
    o  Model Number
    o  Capacity

4.  Jumpers.  Do you know about the "jumpers" on IDE/EIDE hard drives?

5.  FDisk.
     a.  Where did you get the version of "fdisk" you're using?
     b.  How does "fdisk" see the hard drive?
          o  Primary Partition:
              -  What is its size?
              -  Is it set "Active"?
              -  Type of File System (FAT, FAT16, FAT32, Unknown, something else)?
o  Extended Partition (with any logical volumes)?Hi dahlarbear.

What we're looking at here is a Pentium 100, PC clone. The m-board is a J-656c (Jetway?). All jumpers and cables are correct.

Hdd = Quantum 850AT TR84A472 REV 02-D A0405, (850MB capacity)

Win95 version = 4.00.950 B (installed by a previous owner).

I ran Fdisk from a Win95 floppy boot disk. It shows c: 1 PRI DOS partition 810Mb, Status active, but the system is UNKNOWN. No extended partition.

The original machine this drive comes from (similar vintage to the P100) has a Phoenix Bios. If I auto-detect the drive, it shows:
Type: Auto (850Mb)
Cyl: 1647
Heads: 16
Sectors/Track:63
Write Precomp: None

Multi-sector Transfers: 8 Sectors
LBA Mode Control: Enabled
32 Bit I/O: Disabled
Transfer Mode: Fast PIO 4

The machine I'm attempting to transplant to has an Award BIOS. If I auto-detect the drive with this P100, all the settings match except Write Precomp. This shows as 65535. Changing it to NONE seems to have no effect when I try to boot.

Just before the machine tries to boot (and I get the "Disk I/O error"), the screen shows: PRI Master Disk: CHS, Mode 4, 850 MB.

Any ideas?
Cheers,
Harry

Solve : Screen goes Black Screen?

Answer»

For some REASON I'm having a lot of problems when I play games in full screen. I've been having this problem for a week now, and it persists. EVERYTIME a game goes to a cutscene or is put in full screen it will go into a black screen, but the game still continues to play. For some reason it only happens with games that I play in full screen with, and not windowed mode.

I unplug and reinsert the CABLE connected to my graphics card, and monitor in order to fix the problem. Usually this always does it for me, and my screen is restored to normal. I also get this flickering in my screen. Is this a DRIVER issue or something?

I am using windows XP SP3, and my graphics card is a 7600 GS. woops, a mistake in the title  Oh I forgot to add my monitor is a Viewsonic VX922What game? What are the game requirements?
How much RAM do you have? 7600 GS is on-board video, or separate video card? How much RAM there?

Solve : HP 1310 not installing scanner?

Answer»

Not sure if this is the proper forum or not.

I have a HP 1310 PSC that is a few years old. Has bee relatively trouble free until now.  I had to repair an XP SP 3 issue by removing all software down to the initial XP original setup.  After reinstalling all the programs that were needed EVERYTHING went well, except for HP.  After installing the software for the printer everything worked well, printing, copying but no scanning.

I used the HP uninstaller program provided by HP and then reinstalled the software again, twice.  Still no SCANNER detected.  I can't understand why if the copying function works, why not the scanner. It uses the same program, doesn't it?

Any help appreciated.

Canuck, if you go to Device Manager, are there are yellow exclamation marks or question marks there? (anything wrong)That should be checked.  These are multi devices in one.  Its not rare for one of the two to fail.  My father has a printer that wont scan so its very possible but I dont want to say that is what has happened just a possiblty. The device manager was the very first thing I checked.  Unfortunately I have no access at the present time to check it out with.

So...there was or was not an indication of an error in Device Manager?

What, exactly, is the problem - no software interface or you get the software but the scanner won't WORK? Does the scanning light come on?The software installs o. k.  The print and copy function works properly.  It just won't scan.  I have tried the original disc to install with and the latest drivers from hp, all to no avail.  Frustrating as *censored* and am running short of patience with this thing.  I can't afford to go out and get a new printer at this time and I have some serious scanning to do.

Thanks for LETTING me vent.I know it's frustrating - but, what do you mean that the scanner won't scan? Can you open the 'scan' dialogue box in the software and click 'scan' or not?How does this unit connect to the computer?

Solve : 8500GT with DDR3??

Answer»

I have a 300W PSU and I am going to buy a 8500GT graphics card.

I know someone who has same spec computer I do and is running a generic stock 8500GT with DDR2. Should I buy the 8500GT with the gDDR3 model? Do I need a higher power PSU?

In reading reviews, particularly on newegg.com, some people said it had no problem while others have said it gets hot quickly and that the fan isn't too good. With my AMD64 computer that has the cool'n' quiet technology, would that be a problem?

The gDDR3 model is overclocked versions compared to the stock. I play Age of Empires 3 now and then. So 8500GT would be fine, unless someone can recommend to me a better card that doesn't require me to buy a new PSU for now since I don't need a higher powered graphics card.

A larger power supply is always a+of course larger power supply is a plus. But I have no need of it right now. An 8500GT will suit me just fine; it's REPLACING the old crappy ATI x200 Integrated graphics card that I currently have.

So is 8500GT DDR3's power supply requirements same as generic 8500GT? If that is the CASE, I'll just buy the 8500GT with DDR3, given that heat ISSUES won't be a problem.Yes on the generic, go for it. You can always purchace a larger power supply and when you build a PC you can use it in the new casewell, you should be able to run with 300w, but IVE never tried it so it may burn the power supply out quickly, my advice would be to throw a 500-600w power supply in there, it doubles your wattage, and it runs from about $50-$150 depending on the quality of the power supply.

ps an 8500 can run almost any game out there, the more intense games would need lower graphics settings. but you should be set with that.I have a HiPro 300W PSU with 12V rail 19A. It will run the 8500GT generic. I guess I'll not get worry about 8500 DDR3 model for PSU I got for now.

Another question, HD 3650  I think also requires at least 300W PSU so I am good on that point. Now question is.... should I get HD 3650 or 8500GT? Similar cards/price except HD3650 has more stream processors. Not heavy gamer so it's ok for games to be at low resolution and higher otherwise.

And how's ATI quality these days for stability and drivers for PC systems?

Solve : cpu fan failed-shutting down?

Answer»

My brother's HP model 500n DA190-80201 has worked fine while he has had it.
Recently, when he starts it, he gets a MESSAGE immediately which says:
CPU fan failed..SHUT down in 5 seconds.
Or press F2 to continue.
He did press F2 and it booted o.k. and he was able to use it for a couple of hours at a time. He did this for several days until he told me about the problem.

My problem is that there is no fan on top of the heatsink and I can't get the heatsink out. The 2 clips that look like they have to be pushed downward to release them just won't move.

I can't tell what kind of CPU or heatsink the computer has as all manuals, etc have been lost.

Thinking that maybe the BIOS got screwed up somehow (he wouldn't even know how to access BIOS so I know he didn't do anything to it) I tried to get into it.
Tried pressing F11 repeatedly and that didn't work so every time I POWERED it on I tried F2,then F9,F10,Delete, etc.

I just don't know what to try next. Thanks to all who try to help me.

ole ladyI would not fool trying to remove anything that you are not sure on how to do , take it to a PC shop and let them advise Thanks for your reply.. I've removed heatsinks before but have never encountered one like this. I'd like to try to get it out to determine if in fact, there really is a fan underneath it or in it. It doesn't seem to make any noise at all so I think the BIOS is screwed up. So, the first step to me was to try to remove it.
check the wires, make sure the fan is getting power... a wire may have gotten knocked out.I hate those heatsinks. It always feels like your breaking something when you actually get those clips off.Yes, that is how it feels.... like you will break something if you use too much force.
How did you finally release the clips??

Thanks for a reply.Looks like a Socket A AMD. See if this helps: http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_cpu.htmI usually use a straight screwdriver to push them down and then pull them out. You have to be very careful when you do this because you CAN break something. ALSO make sure you are grounded before touching any internal components

Solve : Windows Vista installer doesn't want to start?

Answer»

I'm at the point where I want to give up on this. If someone could help me troubleshoot this I'd greatly appreciate it.

I could install and run Windows XP Professional SP2 and Ubuntu 8.04 with no problems. I tried installing Vista through XP, but after it restarts for the first time the installer never continues. I tried installing Vista through a virtual machine, and it installs and runs fine through the VM, but when I try to use it natively it won't start. I tried testing the CPUs using StressCPU 2 and it didn't have any errors after a few hours (which I figured would be plenty of time to see if they were so bad that the Vista installer wouldn't even start) I tried testing the RAM with memtest86+ 1.7 and it returned no errors. I tried taking out one of the CPUs, all but one stick of RAM, and the DVD drive, and it still REFUSES to start. I tried both CPUs, both CPU sockets, two different DVD drives, a few different IDE cables, different sticks of RAM, different RAM slots, and two different installer DVDs (an original hologram CD, and one burned to a DVD-R at 1x) I tried changing a bunch of settings in the BIOS but the only one that made a difference was disabling the CPU cache, which obviously isn't a viable solution.

The installer will randomly seem to do one of three things: either just flat out refuse to start, leaving the computer hanged with a black screen, start to load files and hang once the progress bar moves by three units, or start to load files and hang after the progress bar moves more.

The only hardware I have hooked up right now is:
Motherboard: Supermicro P3TDDR
CPU: Pentium III-S SL5XL 1.4Ghz (133x10.5)
RAM: ATP 512MB PC2100 AB64L72A8S8B0S
DVD drive: Matshita DVD-RAM SW-9

If someone has any IDEA what the problem could be I'd love your help. The only hardware I have hooked up right now is:
Motherboard: Supermicro P3TDDR
CPU: Pentium III-S SL5XL 1.4Ghz (133x10.5)
RAM: ATP 512MB PC2100 AB64L72A8S8B0S
DVD drive: Matshita DVD-RAM SW-9
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Winvis........^.needs more than you have stated........^No it doesn't, it needs an 800Mhz CPU and 512MB RAM

I also have 4 sticks of RAM for a total of 2GB.

Plus, like I said, it runs fine in a virtual machine.

But that's not the issue, the installer won't even start. Its odd that you dont receive any on screen woes..Try dispart...on board winxp program..and try install  it on another part of the hard-drive.. Quote

it needs an 800Mhz CPU and 512MB RAM
In Micro$oft misinformation.
If you wanna run Vista, you NEED 2GB of RAM, and dual core processor. You don't need a Dual Core Processor but you need something fast.Look, the minimum requirements aren't an issue here... I already said it runs fine (albeit slowly) in a virtual machine, which has even worse stats than running it natively. I also said I have 2 CPUs, which Vista Ultimate will recognize and treat as a dual-core system.

I'm slow, I guess. What are you trying to do? Install Vista - how? By itself, multiple boot? Any error/informative messages from Vista?

Is this a legal copy of Vista provided by MS?I'm planning on installing Vista by itself, then installing Ubuntu after.

There's no error messages, it just hangs at this screen:

Sometimes it'll hang right away before any progress is made, sometimes it'll hang after the progress bar moves 3 units, sometimes it'll get farther before it hangs. And sometimes it won't even get that far and it'll hang on a blank screen.

It's a legal copy that I've gotten to work on a few different systems, but I've also tried making a copy and that doesn't work either. How long have you waited for Vista to finish? I've read cases where >2 hours were needed.

Have you run the Vista Upgrade Adviser? Looks like you are trying to install on some very old parts. There may well be incompatibilities preventing the install.

Solve : Laptop freezes after login and internet usage?

Answer»

Hello,
during the last months I have had some troubles with my laptop. I have tried to solve the issues by myself but it's hard since I'm not that into computers. First I had some random crashes once in a while resulting in a blue screen combined with some freezes, though the crashes was most of the problem. I think I have solved the crash problem by using WinDbg to find out that fwpkclnt.sys probably was the cause of the crashes. I found out that it was related to Windows Firewall but I know I had turned it off when I started using F-secure. I checked to see and saw that it was on. I turned it off but the crashes still occurred. I used service.msc to turn it off and now I haven't had any crashes for at least 2 weeks.

Instead I have trouble with the computer freezing. It often happens when I log in around the time when my antivirus logo appears. It sometimes happens when I am watching youtube for some time (might not be that it is youtube causing it because youtube is where I spend most of my time on the internet). It can also happen if I leave the computer on and WALK AWAY for 30 minutes or so and then come back it has frozen.

When it freezes everything takes very long time to do, starting a program takes a couple of minutes and I haven't been able to turn it off "the usual way" but I have to hold the off-button to turn it off. When I open the task manager I can see that the CPU usage is low and so is the RAM. There is a LED next to numlock and capslock that is shining. I believe that it shows how much the computer is WORKING or something like that because usually its off or blinking slowly but when the computer freezes it is shining all the time without even blinking.

I have tried to use windows disk repair or what it's called, I have also used Glary Registry Repair but it hasn't helped. I have tried to use Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test but I can't manage to get it started (I have burnt a CD but when I boot the computer nothing happens).

I try to keep my computer as clean as possible deleting unused programs and using CCleaner once in a while. I also have defragmentation scheduled once a week. I use F-secure antivirus and firewall and do scans with Ad-Aware about every second week.

The reason I'm posting here is because I believe the HDD could be the problem but I'm not sure it just feels like that, do you think anything else please tell me so and maybe I can move this topic to another forum.

Laptop specification:
Acer Aspire 5530G
bought January 2009
OS: MS Vista SP2 32 bit
Processor: AMD Turion X2 dual-core mobile technology RM 70 (2.0 GHz, 1MB L2 cache)
Driver: Hitachi HTS543232L9A3 SCSI Disk Device
Graphic: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
RAM: 4GB DDR2 (haven't found the model)

Antivirus and firewall: F-secure
I have Ad-Watch-live activated
I scan with Ad-Aware once in a while and sometimes I scan with Spybot S&D

Internet browser: Mozilla Firefox (with Adblock plus and Noscript)

I think that is all I can remember to write for now, if you need more info please tell me.

Thank you in advance
Johan

PS: I have two other problem that is not that urgent but would be nice if they are solved
1. My computer is much slower than when I bought it and
2. Sometimes my energysettings are changed from minimum processor activity 100% and maximum 100% to minimum 0% and max 0%, I have no IDEA why that happens. DSBy the way the hard drive is far from full 64GB/144GB in one and 0/140 in the second Quote

I have burnt a CD but when I boot the computer nothing happens
I assume, you downloaded .iso file?
You have to use some burning program, which will make the CD bootable, like ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Also, make sure, CD drive is listed 1st in BIOS boot order.Thank you for the reply. I have downloaded the iso-file and I burnt it to a CD. Or I unpacked it with WinRAR and then burnt the files to the CD, is that the correct procedure? I moved the CD drive on TOP of the boot list but it didn't help. I can hear that the CD reader is working but nothing happens except windows being started.

I accidentally put the iso-file on the CD first and now I can't remove it, I don't think that will affect it or will it?
There are some folders on the CD after I burnt it, should I instead put the file in the folders on the CD?
There are 3 files I can't see on the CD but I think it is because some configuration because when I moved the missing files there it said that there already were files with that name on the CD. When I reboot the computer should I do anything special or just reboot it as usual (press restart and then don't touch anything)

I would appreciate if I could get some help.
Thank you in advance Quote

No.

If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
You have to use certain program, like mentioned ImgBurn to make the CD bootable. You burn straight .iso file.
You have to use brand new CDR.

Thank you that helped. I have now done the test and it found some corrupted parts. I did the repair. I haven't noticed anything new now when I started the computer again but I cross my fingers that this fixed it else I will make a new post here. That's good news , but...
Make sure, you back up your data.
Hard drives, which developed some errors have a tendency to do it again.

Solve : Sound problems - weak (not loud) sound??

Answer»

The current computer I use is not able to go as "loud" as my previous computer. My current computer is not new now, but it is a GOOD 5 years or so newer than my previous one, I'm sure, so why the "power" of the sound is extremely weaker than my previous computer baffles me.

Previous computer was WINDOWS ME, current one is XP Media Center Edition.

There's a good chance I have no idea what I'm talking about SINCE I just do not know this stuff, but what does the "sound card" in a computer do? Is that what determines how powerful the sound is, how loud it can go, in a computer? If the case with me is that my current computer just has a weak sound card, can I/how do I replace it with a more powerful one? This computer was not custom built and I have never messed around with any computer hardware stuff, but it is definitely not beyond me to learn how to do such things, so how difficult would replacing a sound card be?

I don't know what kind of stuff my previous computer used, but my new one does have this thing called "realtek hd audio", whatever that is.

I have listened to both my previous computer and my current one through speakers and headphones and earphones with the sound being louder across all on the previous, so that is not the issue.

Any more information you NEED about my current computer to determine why it would just have weaker sound than another computer, any other computer, just ask but be sure to tell me how to retrieve such information.Start>Control Panel>Sound>Volume Tab, make sure that Device Volume slider is all the way to the right; click on Advanced, make sure that Master Volume slider is at or near top. Both of those are fine, that's not the issue. What are you listening to - CD's, MP3? What program are you using to listen? Do you have the volume settings correct in the program? Quote from: drmsucks on August 06, 2008, 11:08:55 PM

Have listened to everything in the past, CD's, games, and various music FILE types, but yeah, most of it is just mp3's now.

Use winamp, but even with games the sound was low which does not use winamp. Winamp has the volume bar all the way up though.Could be that the sound on the new computer just doesn't have the power that the old one did.

It seems like you are using onboard sound if you have Realtek HD Audio. If this is the case, you can add a separate sound card - yes, you'll be able to do it.

Prices range from $10 - $200; I haven't used a separate sound card for 10 years or so, so I can't make a recommendation. More than likely you'll need a sound card for a PCI slot - post your motherboard or computer mfg and model and we can determine for sure. Someone else will be along to recommend a sound card, I'm sure - but it would be useful to know what your sound requirements are - music, gaming, etc. Quote from: drmsucks on August 06, 2008, 11:52:11 PM

Alright, thank you for your help.

Don't know where to find that information about my computer model or the motherboard though, but it's an HP computer.

I will only really be listening to music, I just like listening to my music loud.. don't get quite the same punch from low volumed music as you do from it being super loud. The HP model number will be on a sticker somewhere on the tower.

When the computer is on, you can try to access the system information by pressing the key combination: CTRL+ALT+S. Quote from: drmsucks on August 07, 2008, 09:20:05 AM

Thank you.

Do you know any other computer related forums that deal specifically with creating/making/customizing computers? I figure I'll be able to get more precise suggestions and help from a community that is specifically geared towards that stuff.

If not, suppose I'll just make a new topic here later asking for help with that.I don't, but, you really don't need much help to put in the sound card. Many people here can help you. It's really almost as simple as "plug 'n play."

Post a new topic if you want help picking a sound card - give the computer mfg and model and the fact that you just want to listen to music.

Solve : Monitor not displaying 800x600 resolution?

Answer»

My monitor is a Hanns-G HN199D, (19-inch) and whenever I try to change the display to 800x600, the screen dies and says "Out of Frequency" when normally, it is able to display 800x600. I am not sure of the problem, my graphics drivers are up-to-date (I have an nVidia 6200) and I am relatively sure of my monitor driver. (Device Manager says that the monitor driver is a "plug and play" driver) I tried using another monitor to display that resolution, but it didn't work, ALSO. It was an HP Pavilion vx74. I've now run out of options, and am not sure of what to do. Please help!Is there not a button on the monitor that says Auto or Auto Adjust or something similar?sounds like your card isnt supporting the 800x600, try reinstalling the most recent video drivers. He said it used to be able to display 800x600 but it wouldn't hurt to reinstall the drivers.  Okay, I think I've found the problem. I had a beta version of the 177 release of the NVidia driver, and I think that was causing it not to display the 800x600 resolution. So, I just reinstalled the 175 driver, which was the "most UPDATED" and "most stable" version. Problem solved! Thanks, guys. XDCongrats.

Hey

Sometimes my laptop has no sound and i check the volume mixer, it SAYS its properly working. Then i close my laptop and put my FINGERPRINT on for the password. When it turns on it works for a little. Then if i haven't played anything with sounds it STOPS working for unknown reasons. This has happened way before, but it stopped. Then suddenly it started again.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium
Version 6.0 (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)
Sony
Vaio Model - VGN-CR240E
Ram - 2.0GB

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanksdid u try reinstalling the drivers?Hey h0w, I've tried reinstalling. But it didn't work. If you go to the the device manager in Control Panel, do you see the audio device listed under "Sound, VIDEO and Game controllers"?

If it is there, double click on the name, and see if it says "This device is working properly", or similar.
If it TELLS you it is not working properly, try clicking "Update Driver" under the "Driver" tab.

Any luck?Hey kpac, thanks for helping.
I looked at control panels and clicked on Sounds. It told me that it is working.  Did you try "Update Driver"? Quote

Solve : PCI-E card in PCI slot ??

Answer»

my friend has a computer, that only has PCI SLOTS and AGP slots. He heeds a decent videocard. (better than GeForce 6600 or Radeon 9800 pro) the PROBLEM is, all of the cards better than that are PCI-E. Will a PCI-E card fit into a PCI SLOT and work? Or can someone point me to a card thats PCI or AGP and still better than wats listed above, because i COULDNT find such.

thankyouA PCI-E card will not fit into a PCI slot.

Your friend must have a really old computer. You cannot get agp or pci cards that are "better" than MODERN PCI cards. Tell your friend to buy a new motherboard.

Solve : tried to install new ram, did something stupid, please help..?

Answer»

my computer is, i believe a 2003 model emachines computer, with 756 mb of ram, windows xp sp2, and two hard drives.

I took a piece of ram from an older computer which had it's motherboard some how break down, i figured the ram would still be ok. i tried to put it in my computer but since it wouldn't snap in correctly i thought i could kinda just leave it there hanging with only one side snapped in.

i tried to turn on my computer and when my computer operated normally this green light around the power button would light up and everything would work fine.

however, when i just kinda left the new ram hanging there nothing EVEN showed up on the monitor screen. it didn't even show anything, nor did the monitor even turn on. it was like a turned off tv. it didn't make any twinng or turning on sound.

so i decided to take out the ram i foolishly did not securely put in, and just put back my old ram, restored the computer completely back to how it used to be when it was working, and tried to turn the computer back on.

and the result was:

my computer turned on, however it would still not connect to the monitor and the monitor was still acting like a blank screen, but i know that monitor is fine because i didn't MESS with it at all and it was working perfectly before i tried to put in new ram without secruring it properly... so i dont know what's wrong.

the main thing that makes me suspect something is wrong is that the green light that turns on when the emachines computer turns on is gone, it wont even blink. when the computer is turned on the green light should also be on... so i dont know what i did wrong.

solutions i've tried are putting in the basic ram the computer came with only, and booting the computer back up, but the monitor still wouldn't connect.

im going to try to take the VIDEO card out and just do everything over again, and plug the monitor into the motherboard and see if that fixes anything, im just reconnecting everything but it's not working..

so yes, for some reason, even though i put my computer back to normal, it wont connect to the monitor and the green light is not turning on. and i have a feeling it's because of me loosely securing that piece of ram. if ANYONE KNOWS of any solutions please tell me.It sounds like you may have damaged your motherboard. Do you have a warrenty?

This is a little late but you should never swap RAM like you did. If it is not the same kind that the system needs than you run a chance of damaging the machine.

Ther's the possibility you also may have inadvertently unseated your video card.

Make sure your computer's turned off...and protect yourself from ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) by touching the metal case of the computer.

Unplug all peripherals from your computer case and press the power button and hold it for a few seconds to discharge any remaining current stored on the motherboard.

Carefully make sure the correct RAM and video card is properly seated...and then plug everything back in.

Try turning your computer back on and then follow up with a post here about the results, please.

Solve : USB Modem not recognised?

Answer»

I have been using my cell phone to connect to the Internet, i.e. my phone is the modem. It is a Motorola W375. I've been using it for about 3 months now and connects to my PC via USB. I also have the program which I use to get the phone to run as a modem. About one week ago, I connected the phone to the PC using the usual port and the PC treated like  new device. I then proceeded to re-install it, but anytime it gets to the last stage where it installs the software, it just gives me an ERROR "Failed Hardware installation" and "there was a FATAL error". This appears at the end of the "Add Hardware  wizard". I tried re-installing the driver before running the Hardware wizard, but the result is the same. I have also re-installed the Windows folder before TRYING the Hardware wizard again, stiil no change.
What baffles me is that when the phone asks me whether to use it as a storage device or not and I choose storage device, it promptly gives me the name of the device as "Motorola W375 MAss Storage device". I have also tried using the phone on another PC and have installed it as a modem without any problems. I suspect that there sis osme KIND of USB port problem, maybe the PC doesn't WANT to recognize the USB port as a COM port anymore.
Right now I have reached the end of my wits. Any help out there?

Solve : New motherboard, Freezes at windows loading screen.?

Answer»

I got my new motherboard yesterday and I installed it and everything went smoothly until it started loading windows after I reformatted it. It freezes when the little bar is moving back and forth on the loading screen and when I have my IDE drive installed it freezes almost instantly and when I have my SATA drive installed, the bar goes back and forth a couple of times and then it freezes. My motherboard detects everything just fine and I can access the BIOS and everything but it just freezes when it gets to the windows loading screen and when it freezes, all the lights on the keyboard go off. It has some LED's that are SUPPOSED to be like a debugging thing and I they don't report any problems.

Specs:

MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum 750a

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6Ghz

ECS Geforce 9600GT

2GB DDR2 800

320GB Sata

Windows XP Sp2, real copy

Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me.

1) Just have the keyboard, mouse and monitor connected.

2) Remove and re-seat RAM - if more than one module, try booting with just one module at a time - check your mb manual to see if the RAM needs to be in a certain slot.

3) Remove and re-seat the video card.

4) Remove and re-seat the CPU.

Do one thing at a time - try to boot after each step.

Best of luck.Ok, I tried all of that and it still does the same thing, but when I try to load in safe mode it freezes at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sysTake a look here: http://www.aitechsolutions.net/mupdotsysXPhang.html

Since it's a new install, I WOULD re-install Windows - maybe a file got corrupted during the original install.

What size and make psu do you have?Yeah, the first thing I did was reformat the hard drive as soon as I had everything put together. I have an Apevia 500W Power supply.I just disabled the Internal USB controller in the BIOs and its working now, I hope I fixed it, I will  keep you updated.Great - you MAY want to check for a BIOS update.Maybe you should have [pressed the f6 key on the re-load the o/s]

Solve : Cooling Solution BTX case?

Answer»

I have a Gateway 700GR computer that uses the BTX case and the cooling on it is sucky since its getting older. Long as I keep the heatsink cleaned out of dust and new thermal paste every once in a while it stays pretty cool but no typical 775 socket cooler will work because of the motherboard design which is INTEL South Lake P4 Motherboard R0 it looks like this
http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Intel2/102129/nv.jpg (i have digital pictures of the INSIDE thats a little more closer if someone needs a better idea)

It's constantly running hot which is a intel usual I know but it does stay around 130F if its cleaned out, dust free, new paste and everything but doesnt stay that way long.

What about trashing the current motherboard and keeping the parts, cpu, ram, video card? Ive got a ICT-D925R-GP 775 Cooler but I need to find a board that it matchesgive us the specs of all the parts you wish to use with this motherboard and we will try to find a motherboard that will support it all.product info of the current computer
http://assets.gateway.com/s/PC/R/3726/3726cl16.shtml
http://assets.gateway.com/s/PC/R/3726/3726sp27.shtml

Just based on cooling ISSUES I was thinking about just transfering out the drives, ram, video card, and processor out to a new motherboard where the ICT-D925R or similar 775 cooler will fit and onboard sound. I like the computer itself for the speed its pretty good seems to do just as well as a Core Duo does so any motherboard where these parts will fit if you only want to get a new motherboard because of cooling issues, have you thought about simply carving some holes and mounting some case fans on your comp?No room that I can tell I dont think another fan would help since the processor is actually covered by a black plastic case and another case on top of that the fan is connected to this airflow plastic piece that channels the air down to the chip its EITHER not blowing hard enough or just not enough air. At full speed it spins at 2490 rpms when the proc is at 160F its REALLY noisy. Wonder if a fan would work directly on top of the current heatsink..needs to be about 4 inches wide and push as much air as the current one does im guessing

This is what it looks like compared to a typical 775 cooler

What is the problem?Sorry, the actual problem is that the computer will not turn on at all. Solve : Power LED has stopped blinking during Standby.?

Answer»

I have a MSI K8MM3-V AMD x64 motherboard with 2GB's of RAM, an AMD Athlon 64 3200Mhz processor. a 256 MB NVidia AGP video card, a Creative sound card and a Coolmax 550 watt power supply. I run Vista Home Basic x64 on it.

I just recently put in the motherboard, which is refurbished. At first, when I would go into standby mode or sleep, the unit would shut down and the power LED LIGHT would blink on and off until I resumed it from standby. Now, all of sudden, it has stopped blinking when I put it to sleep. I know it's not the LED because it always shows green when it's in normal operations. What went wrong?
It could be what the new motherboard does. UNLESS there are any problems with your COMPUTER, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Solve : Odd problem with video?

Answer»

I need help with something that has been rather difficult to troubleshoot.

I had been getting artifacts on the screen, FREEZING, and blue screens at first.  After several crashes like this, it began to freeze almost immediately after start-up.  I could prolong the freezing in safe mode, but I was SURE it was a problem with my video card and swapped it out.  I took out my 8800 GTS that I had been using for almost a year, and put in my old 7600 GT that had still worked the last time I used it.

After the switch, some problems disappeared and some remained.  The constant freezing stopped, but artifacts were still there; just different kinds.  Instead of colored lines, I now had dots all over that flickered and FADED.  They weren't as distracting as the lines, and playing video and the internet still worked fine, so I stuck with the old card for the last month or so.

The big problem that REMAINS, is when I try to run any 3d based game.  (old 2d games still work)  The games seem to load without a problem, but after a MINUTE or so of playing, there are polygons that "stretch" out and cover the screen, as well as repeated screen hitching every few seconds.

I just find it really strange to have 2 very similar sets of problems with 2 different video cards, but I don't have a second computer to test on, or the experience to pinpoint the root of it.  Am I looking at something like memory failure, a dying motherboard, or power supply problems?   Or, as unlikely as it seems, are both my video cards done for?  I'm just looking for some solid advice so I don't end up replacing anything that is still good.
Thanks for reading this, any help will be appreciated. When you swapped the 7600 in there, did you reinstall the driver?Yes, I've reinstalled the drivers several times for both cards, thinking I may have had the wrong one, but I'm pretty sure they're the correct ones and up to date nowwhat are the specifications for your computer? it could be other hardware affecting your cards performances: like lack of power from the PSU or a faulty PCI-E x16 slot

Hmmm.....did you try leaving the computer for a while before reinstalling the processor?

It is possible that, by the time you reinstall it, it has cooled down.
However, it there might also be another cause.I tried to remove and reinstall the processor last night when I got home and it freezes as soon as the logon screen comes on now. and when I reboot I get only a black screen. You sure you did it correctly?

Do you have the Windows XP CD?The processor will only go in one way. I can't even get the computer to boot to anything the monitor even goes to sleep. This started with the computer FREEZING and now it acts like I have no processor or the mother board could be bad. I get no beeps I can't boot to anything including a CD rom or even get to the BIOS.That isn't good...

When you turn the computer on, what happens. Full Details.Nothing the monitor goes to sleep, the CD and DVD drives light up the hard drives start spinning but nothing else. The power light stays on THATS it.Did you clean the CPU and re-apply THERMAL Compound ? ?
This is important.Yes I cleaned the processor and  blew off the board with dry air (caned) then reinstalled thermal compound between the heat sink/fan and processor. Thanks for the help I replaced the Mother Board and I'm back up and running. As long as you got it working. Congrats.

Solve : Advice on new desktop?

Answer»

I want to build a new computer soon and wandered if I could have some advice, as I have been out of the loop for while and not sure what's good and new.

The budget is not definite but I am looking at building a moderate computer, lets SAY around £800 for the moment. I want something that is generally fast and reliable, with decent graphics (I currently run on a 7900 GT KO). Bear in mind I don't want the overpriced hardware that is marketed at certain people, but stuff that will do the job all the same.

I'm not sure what kind of processor I'd be looking at. Dual core of course, but AMD or Intel...? And what motherboard (socket?) would I want to go with this? From 2GB - 4GB RAM if necessary. As for HD nothing massive just decent, only on 80GB at the moment. I was looking at something faster than the average (7200rpm), what should I go for? In my experience the HD is often the bottle neck of the system. Oh and what case/cooling system would I need?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Anyone?

Thanks. I seem to be struggling on what hardware to get. Sorry it's just that someone is paying for me to get it built and wants to know what the parts/costs are...

Thanks. I don't agree with someone paying you to do a job and then you going elsewhere to get help with it, I feel that if you take a job you should be able to do it.
However, I will help you out, here's a basic build.

Case
EXTRA fan
PSU
Graphics card
RAM
HDD
Motherboard
DVD writer
CPU

You didn't mention a monitor, keyboard/mouse or OS.
That's a very respectable price for that system - quad core CPU, 4Gb RAM, 320Gb HDD, 8800GT graphics card, P43 motherboard.
I have some of those components (PSU, HDD, optical drive, case and fan) myself and can definitely recommend them.
If you want to add a monitor, the HannsG HW191D 19" widescreen comes in at a good price on dabs too, and yes, I have one.
I recommend this keyboard and this mouse both of which I also have.

Anyway, I hope this helps you out.I didn't mean a job like that. A relative is paying towards a new computer for me and I just wanted some advice in the general area to go for, and to make sure I do not buy incompatible parts.

I wanted some advice about what OS to get. I have only used XP so far so I'm not familiar with it. Will this system run it that well? Is it worth getting? And where can I get a decently priced one from?

I have drawn up my own system, TELL me what you think.

AMD Phenom 9950 2.6Ghz processor £142.97 Link
Asus Crosshair II Formula Motherboard £165.65 Link
OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 1066 MHz 4GB RAM £84.34 Link
Seagate 750GB 7200RPM 16MB HD £86.64 Link
OCZ StealthXStream 600w power supply £46.99 Link
512MB EVGA 9800GTX+ graphics card £163.45 Link
Antec Three Hundred Ultimate Case £35.24 Link
HANNS-G 17" Wide LCD Monitor £88.87 Link
Computer tool kit £27.85 Link
Small parts (screws and fixings) £8
Total £850.00

I wouldn't go for an AMD rig myself, but it's up to you.
Remember that buying from different stores will mean you lose on shipping costs.
I'd recommend a 19" screen rather than 17".
XP or Vista or something else entirely, your choice and pick what feels right to you.
Try and get some experience with Vista, it is the future of Windows whether we like it or not and my personal preferences will cloud your judgement, so I won't advise which OS to get.  32 bit OSes will not be able to utilise your 4Gb of RAM though.  An OS can be bought from most computer stores, typically £50-60 for an OEM version or £100+ for retail.

To be perfectly honest, the build you've got there seems expensive to me, it's not that much better than mine and mine is far cheaper.one more thing if you're going to get 4gb or more, make sure you purchase a Windows XP 64BIT or Windows Vista 64bit in that way you'll be able to use all your 4gb of ram.Okay thanks for the advice.

I will have to do a bit of research into the best right. I will most likely COMPROMISE and go for the smaller (and cheaper) HD you put in. My main concern is which processor to choose. In my experience I have had good performance out of AMD, I have never actually had an Intel processor.

Isn't there some problems with a 64 bit OS? Some people have problems with software. And only a 64 bit OS will utilise 4GB?You did say that HDD space wasn't important which was why I went for a 320Gb model, which is the best space/price ratio right now.
I wouldn't advise getting an AMD CPU now, Intel's are superior in terms of performance and price.
Some people always have problems with whichever OS you choose.  I've had no issues with my XP X64.  For 4Gb of RAM, a 64 bit OS won't be any more efficient as it will actually use more RAM, negating the extra 512Mb or so you'd gain over a 32 bit OS.  A 32 bit OS will see 4 GB, minus address space for other devices.  With a lot of video memory, you'll have less RAM available.  It's up to you really which you choose, just make sure your programs and hardware will work with the OS you decide on.Now I don't know what to choose.

Will 4GB RAM work better with or without a 64 bit OS? Someone told me their comp actually run faster on 32 rather than 64. It all depends on what software you use . . . 32 bit applications, i.e. 95% of software available today, will run the same or slightly slower under a 64 bit OS.  64 bit applications however will run faster.
I personally feel my computer runs faster with XP X64 than the 32 bit version of XP, but a lot depends on your perceptions really.
If in doubt, choose 32 bit - there's unlikely to be much of a performance difference anyway.Okay. Will a 32 bit OS still utilise 4GB of RAM though?

I would have thought by now software developers would make applications for 64 bit systems. A 32 bit OS will not use 4Gigs of RAM.

If you want to go with a 32 bit OS like the 32 bit version of XP than go with 3 gigs of RAM.

It won't do any harm to have more than 3Gb of RAM, but it will be wasted.
Software developers don't seem so keen to develop 64 bit apps, mainly because most won't see a benefit.
Browsers won't be any faster, for example, it's mainly demanding apps that will see benefits and they are starting to come out with 64 bit versions. Quote from: touchstone57 on July 30, 2008, 10:56:37 AM

Okay. Will a 32 bit OS still utilise 4GB of RAM though?

I would have thought by now software developers would make applications for 64 bit systems.
It will use ≈3.5 GB.

Solve : Laptop keyboard-weird issue?

Answer»

Some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working, nothing in order though. It's the z, k, l, n, m, ? and they only stopped working when I try for caps with the shift key. The weird thing is if I can't get the cap letter to work with one of the shift keys, it will work with the other with a few exceptions that I can get to work with caps lock, but what a pain this is turning out to be!

Any IDEA what's GOING on here and how I can fix it? I have an Acer Aspire 5100, running XP.Have you spilled anything on it? Try blowing it out with compressed air and shaking it upside down, there might be some crumbs or dust or something. Is Num Lock on?Press Shift key 5 times.Well, I took the trouble keys off including both shift keys and CLEANED under them. It wasn't dirty, found a very minimal amount of dust. nothing spilled on it or dropped on it, num lock is off and sticky keys is disabled. It's so RANDOM I guess I could need a new keyboard, even though it's only a YEAR and a half old. Well, Acer runs quite well but it isn't the best built laptop out there. Is it possible to just replace the keyboard on a laptop? Before you try and replace it, I would try to borrow someone's keyboard and try it with your laptop first. This is going to sound like a lame question, but how do you borrow a keyboard for a laptopFind a USB keyboard and plug it in the USB port.  Oh yeah...lol, did that. Worked fine  So the other keyboard worked but the laptop keyboard isn't working?

Solve : What is best way to add USB2 capability to older laptop??

Answer»

I assume there may be PC cards which add USB2 capability to older USB1 laptops - but I have not SEEN such an animal.  If there are such things, perhaps someone on the forum can point me there.  If there are other methods, I would APPRECIATE info on that, also.  By the way, I tried searching the forum for this topic and came up blank.  Maybe I just don't know how to ask the question correctly.

Okay - after a lot of searching, I FOUND a PC card adapter with USB2 support - but it's $80.  Anyone have a cheaper solution?Go on amazon.com and type in "usb pcmcia" and there are QUITE a few options for what you want there.http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=pcmcia+usb&x=0&y=0

Newegg.com has many for under $20.Okay - it's official.  I just don't know how to ask a question, or search, correctly.  Thanks to you both (chaz2505 & quaxo) for doing something which I should have been ABLE to do.

Solve : Computer dies during game, also sometimes freezes randomly?

Answer»

Hello, I've been having this problem for a little while now, and I figured this would be the right section to post it in (if not, please feel free to move it). This is the problem I've been having. While playing a 3D game, after a short while, one of 3 things will happen :

1. The screen goes completely black and I'm left with no CHOICE but to restart my computer.
2. Similar to number one, except now the screen has random blocks of crazy colors all over, and I'm still left with no choice but to restart.
3. The computer saves me the trouble of having to hit the POWER BUTTON, and just goes ahead and instantly restarts itself (screen goes black for a sec, and then I'm on the start up screen).

And one more problem that I've chosen to separate from those 3; sometimes my computer just completely freezes and I need to restart. This happens seemingly randomly, at any time.

I suspect this has something to do with a new video card I installed recently. I've had those 3 problems a bit before, but they are occurring much more frequently with the new card, and the random freezing thing is something new. So perhaps I installed it incorrectly, or its in some way not compatible with my system? I don't know, thats why I come here to ask you guys, any ideas whats going on?

Video Card : Nvidia GeForce FX 5200
**Might be worth noting that I did not purchase this hardware, it was given to me by a friend, therefor I have no documentation or disc with it**

Misc System info :
Windows XP service pack 2
AMD Athlon XP 2.13 GHz
1.00 GB of RAM
If it is a used card i would install it in another machine....same symptoms and the card is dying....Any other ideas/suggestions?

CHECKING the card in another machine isn't really an OPTION right now unfortunately.Has this happened before? How long has it been happening?

Do you think it may be an overheating problem?Disable windows auto re-boot on system failure.
Test your ram.
Check your device manager for any warnings.
Run dxdiag to look for problems.
Check your event viewer for any warnings.
Re-seat the card a few times to clean the contacts.
Check the game website for fixes and patches or hardware compatability problems.
Try installing the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.
Try installing older drivers from the manufacturer's website.
Try using your old video card as a test.

Solve : Please help ... the sound just went dead on my Dell D4600 !!!?

Answer»

I've never had a problem with sound on my 4-year-old computer, then it just QUIT ...

1) no storms recently

2) only new thing added recently was a screensaver, which I uninstalled and then restarted my computer ... still no sound

3) went through troubleshooter routine ... still no sound

4) had a chat session with Dell ... he checked all the audio settings (which were OK), had me check the speakers on another computer (they worked), installed new drivers, and finally did a system restore to just before I added the screensaver  ... still no sound ... he said the motherboard sound ports MAY be bad and that I needed to take my computer into a shop

Is there anything else I can do from home to restore sound short of taking my computer into a shop? Maybe it's entirely coincidental, but I still think the screensaver may have had something to do with this. The screensaver was a series of videos of waterfalls with an audio button, which I had turned on. It worked fine for a couple of days, then all of a sudden the audio part of the screensaver quit working. Though I didn't REALIZE I didn't have any sound at all on my computer until a few days later, it COULD have been that I lost all sound about the same time I had no sound on the screensaver.

Thanks for your help!

BillRe install driver, check in device manager and see what it shows at sound? It lloks like on-board sound is dead. Your best option probably is to buy real sound card. If you don't need anything fancy, they're pretty cheap.Do sound CARDS just up and die like that, without warning?Yep...barely anything on computer gives you any warnings.

Solve : weird wire in my speakers?

Answer»

i have no clue what is wrong with my speakers... everything in the device control panel checks out, the speakers control in sounds and audio in the control panel tell me everything is a-ok.... but i have absolutely no sound.  the light on the speakers is green, and the power is way up on everything, and i know its plugged in in the correct spot in the cpu, so no stupid mistakes (i hope).  however, whenever i plug the WIRE from the main speaker into the cpu (and vice versa) it makes this weird crackling noise.  can anyone help?oh, i forgot to mention that when i plugged some headphones into the cpu, they didn't work either, although they are pretty old and i'm not sure if they work at allWelcome to the CH forums.

Have you checked that your outputs are not MUTED?

Please read this..yup i MADE sure, and everything seems to be working fine, or so the COMPUTER tells me.  it even says the sound card is working, but i still get absolutely zero sound.

Solve : Hardware error message?

Answer»

I am trying to get my mother-in-laws computer FIXED.  The OS on the computer is Windows 98.  When I start up the computer, it goes through the boot process, and when it finishes with that it prompts me that Windows has FOUND new hardware for a plug and play monitor, and wants to look for the driver.  It won't let me do anything else, so it searches for the driver and TELLS me it finds it.  I load the driver and then I get this message

Message:  This computer has performed an illegal action and will shut down.

And that's it, now I can boot in safe mode, the only difference is that it doesn't give me that new hardware wizard, it just goes straight to the message.

I can also get to the COMMAND prompt from the special options screen.  But that does me no good, unless I have a corrupt driver for the VGA.

I'm stuck. Can anyone help?Personally i would up grade to XP homeIs monitor LISTED in Device Manager without any errors?

Solve : a13g+ motherboard pcchips (problem: scanning array... message forever)?

Answer»

I got a barebones kit from tigerdirect.com, it came with PCChips A13G+ Socket AM2 Barebone Kit - v3.0, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.60GHz Black Edition Retail, 160GB SATA HD, 2GB DDR2 PC6400, ATX Mid-Tower Case, 450 Watt Power Supply.  I also got windows vista 32 home and a PNY GeForce 8500 GT 512MB PCIe video card.  (the dvd I pulled out of my old machine)

I got all of the hardware installed, and powered it up.  Everything going well at FIRST, detects my hardware correctly, scans the memory.  Then it goes to the next screen where at the top it displays nvidia bios and the version I cant recall at the moment.  below that it says 'scanning array...' and never goes past this part.  I have cleared the cmos and CHANGED the bios as the manual said but I always get to this part and it hangs here, so I cant install the windows vista.

any ideas? If it has onboard video i would remove that vid card until you have XP setup properly....then install it.I'll try that when I get home tonight, and post tomorrow if that WORKSTHANKS!No problem...

Welcome Aboard ! !Well I got it working.. thes posts helped me get to the root of it as it was the on board video.  What happened was I disabled the on board video, which was ALSO AFFECTING the on board lan for some reason.  So I had to go in to bios, ENABLE the lan, but DISABLE the 2nd lan setting, which was something like power on boot (sorry I'm trying to remember but i'm at work writing this I dont have the screen in front of me: in any case it is the 2nd lan setting on this motherboard)  Once I did that, I just rebooted, and then it recognised my cd rom and installed Vista and I was good to go from there!

Thanks for steering me in the right direction!Good news indeed ! !

Stop by anytime and Welcome to CH !

Do i have to program it in order to play on TV? I'm so confused about it.. Midterm is fast approaching and still,i can't find any ideas. Please help me.. Thanks a lot for your ANSWERS..-dexter Quote

Can it be connected directly to televisions using RCA plug?
Why? Monitor is not working?the monitor is working.. There's no problem about that..  It's such that it's my thesis..hehe. But is it possible CONNECTING the CD-ROM alone to the television using an RCA cord? Yes or NO? thANKS..No. A CD-ROM is a disk.

Some CD-ROMs

You cannot connect a CD-ROM drive to a TV either. Only to a computer. Or some headphones maybe. Why did you want to connect it to a TV? To see the pictures? Huh?

What is your thesis about? Not about "GOOD manners", I expect.

Recipe for "not MUCH help":

1. Post obscurely worded question. Demand urgent help.
2. When someone asks for more information, reply by brushing aside the question and shouting: "What is the answer YES or NO?"

THANX for the recipe Dias...

Solve : Lexmark X73 problem?

Answer»

Yes, this old printer is still going. First ever problem was in the last WEEK. I've had it for 10 years, but have used it only sparingly through the years.

I'm getting a paper jam automatically when attempting to PRINT. I haven't PULLED the whole thing apart to look for something, but I do not see anything that could be jamming it. Could this MEAN my cartridges are totally dry? Or is there something much more wrong here?

Thanks in advance!Empty cartridge won't cause a jam.  Look for a small PIECE of paper caught inside.

Solve : Some USB drives won't show up in My Computer?

Answer»

Hello everyone - I recently reinstalled Windows XP OEM Home Edition.  I had Windows XP professional edition before but FOUND out it was a BOOTLEG copy so I had to do a complete reinstall.

Anyways, after doing so, I found the VGA drivers, BIOS, AUDIO drivers etc, and updated them, and everything WORKS fine.  BUT, the two USB ports at the front of the computer doesn't.  When I plug in a USB in the back, it works though.

I see all of them in Device Management.  Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, I see 8 of them listed although I only have 4 USB ports in the back and 2 in the front of the computer.  I've clicked on "Update Driver", gone into properties and set Device Usage to "Enabled" for every single one of them many times but it hasn't worked.

I can I get Windows to recognize when I plug in a device using the USB port in the front?  Please help!

THANK you so much in advance.  Please let me know if you need any other info!No need to Double Post.
