Solve : Capacitor going bad?? |
Answer» Recently, an intermittent high-pitched noise has been coming from somewhere on my motherboard; I have to restart for it to go away. I've swapped power supplies, so I know it's not that. For some reason, it's almost guaranteed to happen while watching flash videos for a few hours. ALSO, whenever the ear-bleeding squeal starts, my onboard audio stops working. The FREQUENCY is too great for me to pinpoint with my earholes exactly where it's coming from though. Is a whole NEW motherboard the only/cheapest solution to this?I had one that did the same thing; it was the audio card. Since yours is onboard audio, you'll have to replace the motherboard. Depending on the cpu & memory, you WANT one that USES the same.Man, that's what I was afraid of. I DEMAND A BETTER SOLUTION. one that doesn't involve spending a hundred bucks. just kidding. thanks for the reply.Does system BIOS allow you to disable the on-board audio? Perhaps you could replace it with an add-on card. |

Ever SINCE i built a computer in 2006, i have had a problem with it reporting boot failure and system registry problems. I have swapped out RAM, power supply(after failure), motherboard, Video card, and gone through 2 hard drives, and it still comes up. I have also switched xp for vista, and it KEEPS on reporting. Solve : Used computers? |
Answer» I'm looking at used/refurbished computers. What should I look out for in terms of ripoff? If it's refurbished, could I be buying a lemon? If it's used, would it come full of viruses? I know I should be cautious, but there's a LINE between caution and being paranoid. Any thoughts? Thanks. If it's refurbished, could I be buying a lemon? If it's used, would it come full of viruses? Yes to the lemon, possibly to the viruses, but hardware can be replaced and viruses are generally easy to remove. Ask about a warranty. Important that you see the beast running and more important that you get the original genuine OS install disk with the hardware unless you intend to install a separate genuine version.. Although they can differ try to check the installed registration code against the one on the COA sticker. Deal with a reputable supplier Caveat emptor. Good luck Quote from: Dusty on July 24, 2008, 05:05:59 PM Important that you see the beast running Absolutely - and get any startup passwords or verify that there are none. Quote What should I look out for in terms of ripoff?Agreed. You should make sure the thing works and make sure that all the hardware is WORKING properly. In addition to that, check to see if the specifications are what they are said to be. You don't want to be paying $2000 US for something with a Hard Disk capacity of 10gb and 128mb RAM. With the competitive pricing on new PC's these days refurbished is not the bargain it once was...Thank you all! I'll have to do some hard thinking now... ASlaterEven if there is stuff on the drive you can format it, get a bigger one, or put a different operating system on it.the computer im using(that Optiplex GX150) was refurbished by Dell and i got it free . I got it through the Dell TechKnow Program at my OLD school when i was twelve. What we did was we learned about the guts of a comp, toke our computers apart and put em back together then we learned about the OS and installed it on our comps (Win 2K). The specs they had for all the Dell TechKnow comps were. P3 1GHz 256MB RAM(pretty good) 20GB hard drive Intergrated Video and Audio this was a pretty sweet deal. I resent you we took apart these crappy old desktops that where like pent 2 had windows 95 98 an dos. Loads of them but my senior year we took them apart an got what was still good.compare that to some old macs we had to use in computer class. (the macs were from the 80's)I bought one. I went with Dell because I've ALWAYS been lucky with them. I'll probably need to get more gigs for the RAM, since I'm using it to run Avid for editing. I'll probably be back here to ask for help to set it up. It cost me $272, here's the description (had to remove all the exclamation marks): DELL Precision 650 With INTEL XEON DUAL 2.0GHZ HT 1GB ECC DDR RAM (4-MATCHED STICKS SAMSUNG 256MB EACH DDR RAM, SUPPORTS UP TO 4GB RAM HUGE HUGE 160GB Diamond Max PLUS 9 Hard Drive Floppy (NON WORKING) NICE DVD-RW/CD-RW COMBO AND A DVD-R DRIVE WINXP PRO All Updates up to and including Service Pack 2 Already installed! AGP nVIDIA GeFORCE FX5600 256MB VGA, S-VIDEO AND DVI 8X Video Card FRONT Headphone, FRONT Mic 6-USB PORTS! 2-FRONT USB, 1-FRONT Firewire, 4-BACK USB, 1-BACK Firewire, BACK Sound (in, out, mic) WITH SoundMAX digital Sound DECENT Sounding on-board speaker INTEL Gigabit on-board Fast Ethernet AND a PCI 3COM Etherlink server 10/100 Network CardThats a pretty good deal, execept for the Floppy. but hardly anyone uses those anymore and since you got a DVD-RW drive then the floppy is pointless. Quote ...INTEL XEON DUAL 2.0GHZ HTThat is an AWESOME Deal for $272 but with all this i may have gone up to $400 but your lucky on this. Not true, I still do. Its allways important to have one. As well as usb connectors. Not a bad deal, but you'll find the RAM very expensive to upgrade. Nice to have a dual CPU rig though, the Xeons are good performers even though they're older now.yea but if he buys ram from Cruical then wats the worry. and besides hes runnin XP on it and 1GB is a good amount for a XP Computer. but yes he needs some more ram possibly another GB. |

Solve : CMOS/GPNV checksum bad? |
Answer» Hi, Date time settings lost usually means that your CMOS battery is dead. Try replacing it and see what happens (It may even help with the other error) If the new battery doesn't correct the other issue, down load memtest86, burn it to CD, boot from it and run the test for at least 2 hours on each module separately. If they pass, run for at least 4 hours with both modules installed. http://www.memtest.org/Hi, sorry for the late reply... was having problems with my internet connection. Well, the problem is solved. I reseated the DIMMs, and the PC is booting up fine now. No CMOS message again after that. So, all fine now, and the battery still lives .. yay! Thanks again for the help and replies. AnupamThanks for posting your solution and Good Luck! |

Solve : hp compaq 6535b power cord/charging issues? |
Answer» i have an hp compaq 6535b and i'm having power cord/charging issues. i initially THOUGHT that it was just a power cord issue but i BORROWED an iGo universal power cord from a co-worker and for a few days it worked with no problems. Now i have to try repeatedly to unplug and plug in the cord to the computer and if i am lucky it will work for a bit. Just now I turned the computer upside down to check the model number and now it appears to be holding a charge and powering up (if the small yellow power light on the laptop is any indication.) I read on a Compaq Presario R3000 thread that that computer has similiar problems, however, it is not the power cord but rather the power plug needing to be resoldered to the motherboard. I also have had a bit of an electrical issue with the computer since the first month I got it. Immediately after I plug of unplug the power I cannot touch the computer mouse for about 10-15 seconds - if I do, it opens or resizes screens, flickers the screens, opens the start menu of does all of the above and occasionally freezes up. It also overheats and I use a cooling pad for it. I smoke in the house and have cats. So, what's the question? What do I do? Go and buy a new power cord? Ask to have the *censored* thing soldered? Where do I take it? What do I say? How much will it cost? There are REPAIR shops that specialize in REPLACING laptop power RECEPTACLES, if that's what's wrong. Laptops are usually not user serviceable, because everything is small and packaged tightly. |

Solve : Computer Freezes shortly after loading desktop? |
Answer» Hi, but as soon as I loaded the mobo drivers from the stock CD, it froze again.are there any newer drivers?OK took awhile to do all those tests, but I appreciate all the feedback, thanks guys... BC_Prog, I checked all three of the HD's partitions for errors, all three came back clean...I used a maxtor HD floppy BOOT program to do all tests that it could, all of them came back as 'passed'. I also used chkdsk on xp to check the partitions, for the 2 that don't have anything on them (yet) I was simply able to right click on their names in "My computer" and then click properties, tools, error checking to check for errors...for the C drive, I had to go into command prompt to do it since it seemed to freeze when I did it the way I tried to do with the others...when I tried doing it that way, I had to restart the computer, and then xp checked it before fully loading, but it always froze on step 4 when checking files, so I tried doing a lower level way (command prompt) of checking it, but it seems to have checked out with 0 bad sectors/clusters...in all the hours of testing, nothing froze except for when trying to check the C drive as mentioned above. I just flashed the BIOS and replaced the newer video card with my older PNY geforce 7600 gt (no drivers installed yet) to try to rule that out...just wanted to update you guys on my status before I go to youtube and try to freeze up *edit* I forgot to mention, there may be newer drivers on the asus website, but I havn't downloaded them yet since I want to see if could be the video card...I'll let you know the status on that on my next postSighok: Please start a new topic so that you can get the help that you need. Quote from: drmsucks on July 27, 2008, 10:10:45 PM Sighok: Please start a new topic so that you can get the help that you need.I split it. It looked like he put a lot of effort into it. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 27, 2008, 10:15:25 PM Quote from: drmsucks on July 27, 2008, 10:10:45 PMYep, he did - they both have the same mb; my BET is a driver or driver conflict; maybe a BIOS update.Sighok: Please start a new topic so that you can get the help that you need.I split it. It looked like he put a lot of effort into it. ok seems to be working without freezing after i flashed the bios, but now I've got another problem. The cd/dvd drive isn't being detected in windows. It was being detected before the freezing occured, as I was installing drivers from the stock CD for the mobo, but now it's not listed in my computer or device manager. If I put a Cd in (say for drivers), it won't autoplay, although the cd drive is spinning(power on). I think the BIOS sees it though, because it specifically lists the model on the boot priority list and also lists it right after POST. I've ruled out the IDE ribbon cable and the cd drive as I tried another good drive and cable (seperately)...all connections seem solid and the 1st pin on cable is lined up with the 1st pin on mobo IDE connector, jumper settings on cd rom are on master (also have it properly connected with respect to the master part of the cable)...any ideas? *edit* Installed updated mobo drivers from asus website prior to noticing this problem, but I can't be sure if that's the problem because I didn't test the cd/dvd drive after flashing BIOS and before downloading/installing updated mobo driversWindows supplies the drivers for the DVD/CD drive. Remove the drive in Windows Device Manager then re-boot. Windows should 'find' the drive and re-install the drivers for it. Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager, click the '+' sign by DVD/CD Devices, right-click on your drive, 'uninstall'. Re-bootWasn't listed there, nor was it listed under IDE devices/controllers - its like windows doesn't even detect it...I'll recheck the BIOS again, maybe I overlooked somethingOk...I've rechecked BIOS, but i noticed something odd under the boot device priority list. Usually it detects and specifically lists my cd/dvd drive, but occasionally it does not...I haven't really changed the settings during times when i notice this occurring either. Also, even if it's not listed in the boot priority list, it's always listed right after POST on a black screen where it lists the current bios version...this screen is before another screen that lists details about the entire system. On the second screen, I don't see a listing about the cd/dvd drive. I'm starting to suspect that the board's IDE connector is at fault here. Anyone know if there are PATA > SATA converters for the cabling? In other words, is there something I could go buy that can connect the 40 pin ribbon cable into a SATA connector so that I can effectively turn my drive into a SATA cd/dvd drive? I've got multiple SATA connectors on board but only one IDE connector, and I'd rather just go around that particular problem then have to RMA the whole boardFinally found the problem...when I was still trying to resolve the freezing issue, I had gone into device manager and turned off a device that was listed as the SCSI and RAID controller...apparently, this device also controls the IDE interface on the board, but it wasn't listed that way...kinda stupid. Anyway, on a hunch I re-enabled it, and wallah - my cd/dvd drive was detected. Thanks again for everyone's input and advice!Congratulations Enjoy your new build! |

Solve : PSU for Graphics Card.? |
Answer» Hello again. I know that video card is fine my guess it's a power supply.Check the power requirement for your video card (just the card, not recommended system power requirement.) According to this SPEC sheet, your motherboard is only good for 25 watts on the x16 slot. This is quite low. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimc521/en/SM_EN/specs.htm#wp1052631I don't really understand what you mean by 25 Watts. What is a good amount then?I think that the PCI Express spec is for 75 watts - your motherboard only supports 25 watt max. Your card may legitimately need more power (the spec allows 75 watts through the 'slot') than the motherboard can RELIABLY supply. The issue isn't theoretical - either your card requires more than 25 watts or it doesn't. If it does, a new psu won't help. That sux so you suggest getting a new computer? Quote from: DeathV on July 28, 2008, 12:50:24 PM That sux so you suggest getting a new computer?I didn't get this old being dumb! That decision is for you and your father! I suggest checking the power requirements of your video card! Computers should always be purchased to match their expected use. You have a very nice computer suitable for running local applications and internet web BROWSING. Light gaming also ought to be able to be accomplished with your computer's stock configuration. Resource hungry, power gaming and the required power hungry components can not be accomplished with your system.well i unplugged my graphics card and then connected to the onboard card, the comp still won't turn on. smth got broken lol I somehow got my computer running again. It's very weird. Everything just started running. Edition on the Graphics card: When I was buying it I checked everywhere for it and stuff so and it said that it's like the best for C521, my computer, and so I guess it should be working just fine. Hopefully I can figure out what really happened and prevent it from happening again. I think though a new computer would be much better. Just checked again that my Powersupply is like 5x5 power supply it's almost a square and a height is like 4.1/4.2 Sad Okay I officially need a new power supply.Best of luck!Lol you guys' answers made me laugh hahaha... |

Solve : Cable Length help? |
Answer» I use win xp pro and I know that the new BIOS that talk back and forth to the DEVICES have a Length Limit. Due to the maximum length of the cable between two devices of 5 metres and a maximum number of 5 hubs , it is possible to create a chain 25 meters in length. http://en.kioskea.net/pc/usb.php3I'm using a 50m LAN Cable right now... I am sorry I am in the USA how many Feet is ok befor you see a PROBLEM? And is this just with Serial Cables I did not understand. Thanks for the help25 Meters is approximately 82 feet. What this means is creating a chain of USB Hubs, it shouldn't exceed 25 meters if each hub were 5 meters in length. This means you shouldn't have more than 5 USB Hubs. http://www.lakewoodconferences.com/catalog/87/18/370/340982/usb_hub.html |

Solve : No boot, frozen at splash screen? |
Answer» Last night I attempted to uninstall Vista and replace it with XP. I got Vista removed successfully, but at some point during the setup of XP, the computer restarted and was stuck at the very first splash screen (Alienware screen). If I press DEL within a second of the splash screen appearing, I get some BIOS information. It detects my CD Drive and my HDD, but then it stops with code 0078 at the bottom right of the screen. If I press F8 while viewing this info, a line appears that says "BOOT selection popup menu selected", but nothing happens. |

Solve : CD ROM NOT RECOGNIZED IN BIOS? |
Answer» I'm trying to install Windows on a computer I just received but the bios isn't recognizing the CD ROM drive so I can't install windows via CD. I've tried several different cable configurations and a couple of different CD ROM drives. it has power just not showing up in the bios as present. The hard disk format (i.e., loader) *can* affect the video when using a BartPE boot disc [a CDROM], especially with a digital video cable. Wow! THREAD "Blank Video With Dell Optiplex Gx280" http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=11310&mode=threaded The Boot Order does have the CD first but the bios says no CDROM is present in the system. As far as the cable I'm just using standard cabeling that probably came with the system. I'm thinking of buying a USB CDROM drive for cheap tomorrow and test that out to see if it can detect that. Any other ideas?0. USB Drive. Not sure yet what your system supports. Also don't have experience booting from USB Drive, so recommend continuing to work on getting system BIOS to recognize a CD-ROM device (using whatever interface your system supports: IDE, SCSI, USB). 1. Which system case does your system use (see system case link just given): o Small Form-Factor Computer o Small Desktop Computer o Desktop Computer o Small Mini-Tower Computer o Mini-Tower Computer 2. What "exactly" does the BIOS report for your IDE, SATA, USB devices (Hard Drives, CD-ROM)? Quote I'm just using standard cabeling that probably came with the system. Are the pins in the connectors like this? or like this? The connectors are the second type. As far as the form factor, its just a standard town and tne bios reports not present next to the cc rom and the other sata drives that are obvioujsly not there since there is only one. Quote from: phoenix_rising753 on July 27, 2008, 08:06:37 AM The connectors are the second type. Rules out the video cable problem. Quote from: phoenix_rising753 on July 27, 2008, 08:06:37 AM As far as the form factor, its just a standard town and tne bios reports not present next to the cc rom and the other sata drives that are obvioujsly not there since there is only one. 1. Tower. For now I'm going to assume you have the "Mini-Tower Computer"... Or the "Desktop Computer"... Or the ... You know how it goes. 2. BIOS Drive Detection. So you have a single SATA hard drive and a single CD-ROM drive installed in the tower. Is there an internal floppy drive? Does BIOS report them by drive number; e.g. 0, 1, 2, 4; or by interface; e.g. IDE Primary Master (PM), IDE Primary Slave (PS)? BIOS reports the CD-ROM not present. What is the "exact" message? Does BIOS see the single SATA hard drive? What is the "exact" message? BIOS reports the other SATA drives not present??? What are the "exact" messages? 3. CD-ROM Drive. You've tried several CD-ROMs with same result. a. Is the CD-ROM drive connected to the only EIDE PORT on the motherboard? b. Is it a ribbon cable with 40 wires or 80 wires? c. Does ribbon cable have one or two connectors for drives? If two, is the CD-ROM connected to the middle connector or the end connector? If two, is anything connected to the other connection? What? d. Are the jumpers on the CD-ROM drive set to "Master", "Slave", "Single", or "Cable Select"? e. With power off: Have you tried reseating the ribbon cable at both ends? Have you tried reseating the drive's power connector - (or using a different one)? f. Have you tried another known working EIDE cable? 40 or 80 wire cable? g. Have you ensured the EIDE port is "enabled" using CMOS setup for system BIOS? Is the IDE controller enabled in system BIOS? You'd have to be pretty unlucky to have a "dead" IDE/EIDE controller or port. 4. Hard Drive. The SATA hard drive is connected to the SATA 0 port on the motherboard? 5. System Setup. Use System Setup to disable devices and ports you won't be using to free up system resources (IRQs, IO Addresses), e.g. Serial, Parallel, SATA 2 ports. 6. Dell Diagnostics. If you use the F12 FUNCTION key during system startup, can you access the Dell diagnostics on the hard drive? What is the light pattern on the Dell diagnostic LEDs? 7. Floppy Drive. Solve : Laptop screen dead + BSOD? |

Answer» I've had this LAPTOP since January, it's mostly WORKED fine since then. I GOT it from Ibuypower. The last few days it has been randomly crashing some games, and YESTERDAY the screen stopped turning on. I brought it into work and hooked it to an external monitor. Now, there are multi-colored lines or checkerboard ACROSS the screen, even before Vista boots up, and it BSOD's seconds after it hits the login screen. It's hosed, isn't it? |

Solve : bad cpu or motherboard? |
Answer» Hello I am new here and I ham having some issues with my computer and wanted to bump heads to see what you guys may think...here is the issue I got a computer from a friends after she had gotten a new one, it worked FINE at first and when she had it. I TOOK it apart to clean out the dust it get it all pretty, after all this is my "new" computer. so I cleaned everything put it back together and the computer ran but it wouldnt display anything on the moniter. wasnt sure so I took it back apart, this time I took the heat sink off to clean out dust from it that I had for got to do. I reinstalled heat sink and applyed new cooling compound. got everything together and this time it turns on then immediately off, as in the fan leds blink on then off and the FANS dont even rotate. The motherboard wasnt beeping codes as I thought it should if there was an issue. I tryed a different power supply and same thing. I tryed disconnecting everything but power and same thing. NOW what confuses me if i disconnect the 12v core voltage power supply cable (the 4 prong power cable) fans come on and stay on but I tryed to attatch a video card and see it would show anything and no power was to the video card. I dont have a second motherboard or cpu to test if it's one or the other atm so I am lost....what do you guys think? when I leave the cpu power unpluged Quote from: afguy2082 on July 25, 2008, 02:52:58 AM because I can remove the cpu power cord a What do you mean by this? Are you talking about the fan lead? They generate huge amounts of static electricity.ok I understand this it was my mistake....I am asking you opnion if it's a fried mobo or cpuWell, if you used a vacuum cleaner inside your computer and wiped the circuit boards with a cloth, you may have fried the entire system I would take it to the local computer shop and have a tech examine it. Hopefully you didn't pay too much for this machine. Static electricity can destroy all of the delicate circuitry inside of computers. Quote from: afguy2082 on July 26, 2008, 11:35:19 PM ok I understand this it was my mistake....I am asking you opnion if it's a fried mobo or cpu Impossible to tell from here - once again try to re-seat the CPU. Release the CPU and heatsink from the socket, re-insert carefully and while exerting a very slight downward pressure, lock the CPU into place and lock down the heatsink. While the heatsink and CPU are out, you can clean and re-apply thermal compound if you think that you need to. As always, protect from static and try to avoid touching the pins of the CPU. Good luck. |

Solve : My Laptop's Power is GONE? |
Answer» One night the other week, I left my laptop on and plugged it to the adapter to be charged in the morning. Next morning, the battery light on the panel is flashing which means the battery is low and needs to be charged. I checked to see if it was plugged correctly and it was. So I moved it to other outlets in the house and another house as well. Nothing. The charger seemed fine, the light was on, so it seemed fine. So I thought it was either the laptop or the battery. I looked up the battery online and the model iis a BATCLS0L Lithium Ion Battery. Some sites said that specific model last from 2-3 years, and mine is almost 4 years old now. Some sites said that specific model last from 2-3 years, and mine is almost 4 years old now. Sounds like time for a new battery. How'd did you make out with this: Quote from: dahlarbear on July 19, 2008, 01:28:15 AM With laptop power off (and AC power adaptor cord removed), remove the battery completely; then see if laptop will boot from wall circuit with the AC power adapter.Nope, the laptop will only work with the battery. I'm dreading pulling money out to buy a new battery... Quote from: seanfb91 on July 19, 2008, 10:55:07 AM Nope, the laptop will only work with the battery. I'm dreading pulling money out to buy a new battery...Say what? I thought the battery was discharged. I assumed laptop design would support operation off the AC power adaptor when battery is removed. I thought that method was commonly used to isolate a battery as the problem device. If the laptop doesn't run in that configuration, isn't it possible: o AC power adapter is defective (hence doesn't charge battery or run computer) o Laptop circuity needs a power reset? (Someone with more experience would have to confirm whether this is even possible.) Do laptop batteries surrender without some warning? Quote from: dahlarbear on July 19, 2008, 01:27:41 PM Do laptop batteries surrender without some warning? Decreased use times. A 4 year old battery almost surely needs replacement - but, you're right, that doesn't rule out other CAUSES of the current problem, e.g., the power adapter.Should I look into getting a new adapter? Or a new battery? I should I have my laptop looked at? Either way, it's money coming out of my pocket. Quote from: seanfb91 on July 19, 2008, 04:13:27 PM Should I look into getting a new adapter? Or a new battery? I should I have my laptop looked at? Either way, it's money coming out of my pocket. Not a pleasant prospect It SEEMS highly likely that the battery is shot; however, I'm puzzled as to why the computer won't power up with the battery removed and the adapter plugged in. Many computers can operate this way but I don't know if yours should or not. Can you get support from the manufacturer to help guide you? Best of luck!I don't have experience with laptop batteries (or laptops), but I'm convinced you should be able to run it without the battery. With the battery removed and the AC power adapter disconnected, press and hold the power on button for ten seconds or so (to bleed off any residual charge - hopefully circuits will reset and firmware initialize when power reapplied). Now with the battery removed and the AC power adapter connected, press and hold the power on button for ten seconds or so. Trying to clear a LOCKUP condition. Working blind here. While I found some documentation on the internet for your laptop (I believe I even found the User Guide), it provided no useful troubleshooting information. Once again, find a voltmeter and test the DC output voltage at the END of the AC power adapter cable (end that connects to computer). Ensure it meets the spec for the computer plus or minus five percent. If it's the original power adapter for your laptop, the DC voltage rating should be listed on the transformer HOUSING of the AC power adapter. Check for intermittent wire connectivity (broken or worn wires in cable) and ensure connections in/out of transformer are seated (haven't worked out or loose). Does the power input jack on the laptop seem secure? Not loose or broken?Dude, everybody's right. STEP 1 IS ALWAYS.... plug it in and turn it on with the battery removed. Come on, just give it a try.I have a Toshiba Satellite 440CDX from 1996. I must have really gafoozled the battery, because now it won't last more then 4 seconds with it plugged in.(even WITH the AC) However, my first step was removing the battery and running off AC. worked like a charm. I think the whole reason behind this is with the battery present, the AC input is used to charge the batterym which subsequently supplies the computer. If the battery is old (especially in my case, 12 years) the battery breaks the link by not supplying the proper outputs to the laptop. Thus the inability to boot. Obviously, removing the battery must initiate some workaround where the AC input is beinh used directly as the source. Quote from: jamesj2001 on July 25, 2008, 06:35:13 AM Dude, everybody's right. Read the thread. My uncle who works for a computer company, built my laptop and says that the problem is most likely the charger instead of the battery. Quote from: seanfb91 on July 25, 2008, 11:03:57 AM My uncle who works for a computer company, built my laptop and says that the problem is most likely the charger instead of the battery. Let us know how you make out! But, be prepared - batteries older than 4 years don't have much life left. Final thought - check the output of the adapter as suggested above by dahlarbear; sounds like your uncle would have a multimeter; or take it to a computer repair place, I would think that they would check it free of charge. Best of luck! |

Solve : Computer will not boot up + other problems!? |
Answer» I have an HP 576x Desktop PC at my home that will not boot up at all. About a week ago, whenever I pressed the power button on the case, it would go good until right after the BIOS startup screen it would say "Operating System not Found". if the messages " operating system not found" it is probably the operating system is corrupted..or may be you must select the HDD for first boot on your BIOS. the cd-rom wouldn't open, refresh the ide/sata cable then change the power cord of your cd-rom..if the sound continues, refresh the ram scratch the it with the eraser ( gold part).give your idea Mr. allan,. use your own brain. OK here is my 2 cents. Here is what I would do. 1 - Start by unplugging everything from the motherboard (including memory)except for the cable from the power supply. Try and boot like that and see if your power supply stays on as expected. You will probably get some beeps from the motherboard (called beep codes - see if you can note how many and the length of each one you hear). If you did get the beep codes - go on-line and run a search for motherboard beep codes and see if you can find the meaning of what you hear. 2 - STARTING with only the memory (of course Power off the PC between each time), then plug in only the hard drive to your motherboard and see if it boot Then add in this order 3 - Hard Drive 4 - CD/DVD Rom 5 - Sound Card / any other items one each Not how your PC starts at each boot. If you see that everything is good at 1st and then goes down hill as you add more its probably power, however if you unplug everything and it still goes orange almost instantly, then you have other issues on top of the power supply. Again that is who I would handle it. Any questions you can find me at TechGeekandMore.com Good Luck Alex Head of TechGeekandMore.com I agree with the LAST poster in regards to the troubleshooting steps. I'd also say that the "OS not found" has to do with the MBR being corrupted or somehow your boot order got changed in the BIOS. This is not uncommon with XP. Boot off your XP cd and you should be able to do a startup repair. The only issue with that is, I've had that MBR problem when the sectors on the drive containing the MBR are damaged or corrupted. Were you able to run any type of disk health utility on the drive? If you can, it will probably show many damaged sectors. It sounds like it's time for a new drive. Hope you get it going ;-) |

Solve : VGA Card in 386 clone - dip-switches? |
Answer» Hi friends, I'd upgrade that video card to like a Trident SVGA Card with 1MB Video Ram. You can find the Trident Cards in ISA and PCI flavors, the PCI flavor might even have 2MB to 8MB Ram vs just 1MB on an ISA card. Also if your 386 supports VESA you can go that route.Well, he won't be able to use PCI, since no 386 motherboard has PCI Slots. the 486 was the first to introduce that tech. Davelembke raises a good point- it's POSSIBLE your windows configuration is set to CGA B&W instead of VGA. Quote from: DaveLembke on July 25, 2008, 10:20:21 AM
the 386 was introduced in the Compaq DeskPro in 1987, so technically it isn't older then a 386. the 386, on the other hand... Quote from: derdup on July 24, 2008, 10:55:09 PM VGA monochrome So, is that a Video 7 board then? If so, you might want to find the serial number or FCC ID and try to find some proper 3.1 Drivers for it. I highly recommend a different Video card, however. I myself have around 7 ISA Video cards rotting in my closet. Thanks for your replies. Quote what "mode" commands have you tried? I tried MODE co80 Quote it's possible your windows configuration is set to CGA B&W instead of VGA. My windows display config is set to VGA. Apparently the purpose of CERTAIN plug pins has changed since the early days of VGA. Of particular interest here are the pins allocated to the identifying of the monitor type. Someone on another forum has SUGGESTED I modify the video cable (making one pin NC). The more I look at this issue, the more this seems the likely solution. When I get time, I'll make the modification and let you know how it goes. Thanks everyone |

Solve : Can a 3.0 Volt CMOS Battery provide enough power to boot a PC?? |
Answer» Greetings, BC_Programmer, Yes, to this...but, not from a 3 volt CR2032 battery.BC_Programmer, Ah, so it would be possible to boot the PC from another battery. OK, perhaps a 3.0 Volt CMOS battery would not be enough... What about a ¨... bridge battery. This battery is only found within portable computers and is used as a temporary backup for the main battery. This allows you to remove the main battery and replace it with a good battery without having to turn off the computer.¨ Do you think this would provide enough power to pull it off? Jean-Pierre Quote from: dareys on July 24, 2008, 11:29:54 AM BC_Programmer, What are you trying to accomplish?BC_Programmer, I think I now know that if you leave a desktop plugged into a power supply and you have it hooked to a router with a wireless network enabled, somebody can tap into the Network card, wake the machine up and access the PC. I am trying to learn as much as I can about these posibilities to prevent the illegal access of equipment. I have suspected this for a long time. More recently, I was using a laptop that I would power down and unplug at night, only to find odd things in the morning. So I was suspecting a secondary battery might allow the startup and access as I SPECIFIED above. Paranoid? Well, if you had had the problems I have had over a long PERIOD of time you would really try to cover all the bases. Jean-Pierre Quote from: dareys on July 24, 2008, 12:23:45 PM BC_Programmer, a) Disable Wake on LAN in the BIOS, if it's an issue, and, password protect the BIOS. b) I have no clue what you are talking about with the laptop - but, you don't need another battery to access it, the laptop has one. Password protect the laptop. c) Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not after you; but, they're not powering up your desktop machines with the CMOS battery. I entered this thread with reluctance, I am now out. Best of luck! BC_Programmer, Sorry to hear you were reluctant to enter the thread... In any case, I appreciate the help and the suggestions and will give them a try. It is precisely because I am not paranoid that it never occurred to me that somebody might be after my equipment, software and electronic persona. Now, I suspect this may have been the case, perhaps for a number of years. More recently, and because I have been in the IT business for several decades, I thought I could handle things myself. You can learn anything right? I do know a fair amount about PCs and learned about Networking but it is not my specialty. Now, I think whenever I get enough cash, I might hire a black belt in NetWorking to help me really bullet proof my environment. Anyway, thank you, good luck, and be well. Jean-Pierre You continually address your posts to BC_Programmer; fyi, except for the FIRST response, you've been responding to posts from drmsucks. Not particularly noteworthy, but, I don't want BC_Programmer held responsible for anything that I might have said. If you must power off of a battery source, I'd go with a 12V Power Inverter that will create the clean 60hz sine AC at around 120VAC and wattage as great as the power inverter is rated for. For about $40 ot $50 you can get a 700Watt power inverter that will convert 12VDC to 120VAC with a maximum load of 700Watts. But the greater the draw in wattage, the quicker your 12VDC ( Car or Truck Battery ) will drain. Other use for my 700 Watt power inverter was when we had a power outage for 6 hrs at night, and I had my toyota pickup idle in the driveway with an extension cord running into the house so that I could watch TV on our smaller 13" color TV that I dug out of storage and needed about 350 watts, a box fan about 30 watts, and a florescent light, about 12 watts for 60watts of light on a hot sticky summer night a year ago after a fuse blew on the utility pole after a nasty storm and brown out... So if you get a power inverter, it has more uses than just to power a computer from battery. You could use it as am alternate power source when you have no power available.DaveLembke, Thank you for the very original response. Good luck and be well. Jean-Pierre drmsucks, I just reviewed the thread and I stand corrected. Sorry about that. It would seem that you are the one who provided me with the final suggestions to password protect the laptop (which it is), disable WOL (which it is) and password protect the BIOS (which I am going to do). I assume you do that from the standard BIOS CONFIGURATION boot time menu. Thank you. Jean-Pierre Am I mistaken to assume that you're just trying to think of other sources of power that can be used to power up a machine, and only thought of a CMOS battery as a possibility? If So, a Power inverter (or even, for short periods, a UPS), would facilitate that. However, Ithink you're also asking whether a computer can be remotely powered up without having it's power cord plugged in. Quote from: dareys on July 24, 2008, 12:23:45 PM I think I now know that if you leave a desktop plugged in and you have it hooked to a router with a wireless network enabled, somebody can tap into the Network card, wake the machine up and access the PC. I'm not sure, but I don't think a Wireless network card can be used as a WOL source, since the card itself needs to be connected to the network (facilitated with wires in the wired case) to be accessed by other computers. a more likely method would be to access the router that that wireless card is connecting to, and (possibly, if the card can recieve packets while the computer is off) somehow get it to turn on. It's possible with wired NICs, simply because their is no extra device (antenna) to power, it just needs a little standby power to monitor the network. However, a wireless card needs to essentially have full-power just to facilitate waking the computer, since it will need to remain connected to a wireless network. Quote from: dareys on July 24, 2008, 12:23:45 PM More recently, I was using a laptop that I would power down and unplug at night, only to find odd things in the morning. So I was suspecting a secondary battery might allow the startup and access as I specified above.So- are we actually talking about the laptops main battery? because that is designed to power up the laptop. In addition, bear in mind that a desktop PC, in almost all cases, requires far more power then a Laptop (for obvious reasons, not the least of which is the fact that, for the laptop, power conservation is critical to good productivity. On the other hand, Power management in desktop computers is more of a green initiative, (one with the side effect of possibly reducing electricity bills). I'm not sure if it has been mentioned, but the best way to secure a wireless network from access is to use an encrypting protocol, such as WPA or WEP. (I can't recall the good one off the top of my head. I want to say WEP, though). Quote from: dareys on July 24, 2008, 11:29:54 AM What about a ¨... bridge battery. This battery is only found within portable computers and is used as a temporary backup for the main battery. This allows you to remove the main battery and replace it with a good battery without having to turn off the computer.¨ Problem with that is that the secondary battery requires that the computer be put on standby/suspended (most do it automatically), to conserve power draw. I believe it was said before, but I believe your looking in the wrong direction. Features used to remotely boot computer can always be disabled, wireless networks can be secured, and so forth, what you're looking for (and your comments on your networking experience) sounds like you've skipped checking those alternatives(you believe that networks are capable of much more then they really are, as well- researching things on the net almost surely results in some bad information). Quote from: dareys on July 24, 2008, 06:17:27 PM drmsucks, I think, from what you have said, that I would: a) enable the password in the BIOS (yes, you're correct), b) enable a Windows password, c) look at True Crypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/). Good luck! |

Solve : dvd compatibility? |
Answer» Not sure about this one. Run Windows NT with very propriatary software...that's the reason I haven't upgraded. In the old days of plug and play I could run out and buy a dvd burner and away we went. Now all of the burners I have been looking at don't list nt as an operating system...I'm not interested in nero ETC because I run my own software so won't my system just recognize the new device and just take off? The computer should just see the new device right? Are you RUNNING NT4? Last one I put in worked right off the bat, but now all of the new ones indicate they don't support nt4... Do they specifically exclude NT or just don't mention it? My bet is that your NT will supply the DRIVERS for the new DVD. To hedge that bet, I would: contact the manufacturer of the drive that I wanted to purchase (preferred) or purchase through a supplier that I knew would take it back with full refund if it didn't work. Ok, number 3, contact a reputable supplier, e.g., Newegg, and ask them if the drive you want is compatible with your OS. Good luck!Thanks...the manufacturers just dno't mention NT4....will get in touch with newegg. |

GUYS, when i say this, i'm not exagerrating at all, but we ENTERED a room full of computers equipped each with a chair, and a pair of headphones. instead, we witnessed a wasteland. chairs were lying on the floor, headphones had their wires ripped out, most of the computers were also rendered un-bootable. that's probrably when funding for new computers stopped, guess there was just too much vandalism. Solve : killed my Dell 2350? |
Answer» I have a Dell Dimension 2350 that has served me well for several years. Being a fool, I decided to upgrade the memory myself. I bought the appropriate memory card and installed it. The computer would not turn on. I removed the new card and while now the fan will turn on, the hard drive is silent and the monitor gets no signal. I have a Dell Dimension 2350 that has served me well for several years. Being a fool, I decided to upgrade the memory myself. Certainly doesn't sound foolish to me! Paying someone $50 - $100 to install memory - now THAT'S foolish! Try re-installing the original RAM into the original slot. Be sure that the RAM is seated properly - takes some pressure and the white clips will 'snap' into place when properly seated. Looks like your system takes: DDR memory, up to 2 modules, 512 MB each (no larger), max RAM capacity of 1 GB (2 x 512 MB modules). Speed of 266 MHZ or PC2100. You can buy faster RAM, but the RAM will only run at 266 MHZ. Is this the RAM that you bought? The original 512K DDR chip was never removed. I added an extra 512K chip. Once I put it in ( and I don't think it was seated properly the first time, so I turned the computer off and made sure ), the computer failed to work. The lights on some chips inside the unit were on, but nothing else. I removed the new chip, and that got a little more out of the computer, but it's still badly screwed. The new chip is a Patriot Memory chip - 512 MB, PC2100, 266MHz CL2.5The possibility is that one of the Memory cards are broken. Happened to me before. I had to return back and get the new memory. I don't exactly remember what happened kuz it was like 6 MONTHS ago but I believe when I put the broken RAM into the mother board my computer was turning on but the monitor wasn't. I got 2 chips basically 2 gigs of RAM so one chip was broken and when I removed the broken one the computer ran just fine... It could be the chip. Edit: But better advice is to get a new computer so that this new memory would fit in the new computer. Good luck Limmo - Sounds as if you replaced the memory with the unit plugged in - never replace components without unplugging the system from the outlet. Remove the new memory (unplug the system and ground yourself!) and see if you're back to 'normal.' Hopefully, there is no MOTHERBOARD damage. The memory that you purchased sounds right for your system. However, it is not UNUSUAL for 'old' memory and 'new' memory not to play nicely with each other. Even though the specs are the same, there are internal differences in the modules that can prevent a 'fussy' motherboard from working properly. It's also possible, of course, that your new memory is defective. Post back the results of booting with just your old module installed, then, we can discuss next steps.I already did that. No good. Did I ruin the motherboard? Quote from: Limmo on July 23, 2008, 09:24:37 PM I already did that. No good. Did I ruin the motherboard? Perhaps. Look very carefully inside your system for anything that you may have inadvertently knocked loose. Re-check ALL CONNECTIONS - power, data, to motherboard, ALL. Is the CPU mounted securely? Let's remove the old RAM and replace it with the new RAM and try to boot - just one module. If no boot, try the old RAM in the vacant slot. If no boot, try the old RAM in the original slot again. Download memtest86, burn to CD and attempt to boot from memtest CD. If you can boot, test one RAM module at a time for at least 2 hours; any error means that the memory (or slot) is defective. If one module passes, try the next; if it passes, try both together, but increase min time to 4 hours. EDIT: Sorry, get memtest86 here: http://www.memtest.org/Alright, I'll run through those procedures tomorrow. Thanks very much for the advice; I'll update late morning PST. And here's the update: I'm an idiot. I was putting the chips in...BACKWARDS. Once I realized the nature of the mistake, I got the computer fired back up. Then unplugged it and installed the new RAM. Everything is fine. Thank you for helping out someone who is differently abled. I wish you well. |

Solve : What websites do you recommend to buy laptops In USA?? |
Answer» I am looking for an affordable, quality laptop that will LAST me for 4 years. Please specify the laptop you would recommend and why. Also, I'm on a budget so a laptop under $1000 would be nice. Remember, I'm also asking what websites you would recommend to buy quality laptops at a cheaper price. (Much like when you buy furniture from a warehouse) Thank you for your help!Buying a new computer really depends on what you WANT to do on it. |
